Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: You're listening to the Sean O'Connell Show from the Murdoch
- 0:05Speaker 1: Hyundai Studio of ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM. Welcome back
- 0:18Speaker 1: to the Sean O'Connell Show.
- 0:19Speaker 2: Welcome in football insider and expert Jeff Schwartz, former Oregon Duck,
- 0:24Speaker 2: longtime NFL veteran, gambling expert, friend of the show.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Hey, Jeff, how are you?
- 0:30Speaker 3: I'm good. I just heard that Adam would be bummed
- 0:32Speaker 3: I won't be in town for the snowmobile convention.
- 0:36Speaker 1: You need a snowmobile for your Charlotte, North Carolina activities?
- 0:40Speaker 3: Okay, so you know how there's always stories about players,
- 0:44Speaker 3: quarterbacks and running backs getting their offensive linemen gifts? Yes.
- 0:49Speaker 3: So when I was in Minnesota with Adrian Peterson, he
- 0:52Speaker 3: rushed for 2,000 yards. He missed the record by a
- 0:55Speaker 3: couple yards or 99 yards. It was a rough year.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I wasn't very connected to the team. Long story, whatever.
- 1:02Speaker 3: So I had already, I think, left town before he
- 1:06Speaker 3: sort of gave his gifts. But his gift for that
- 1:09Speaker 3: year was a snowmobile to his offensive lineman. I live
- 1:13Speaker 3: in Charlotte, North Carolina. What was I going to do
- 1:16Speaker 3: with a snowmobile? What are you going to do with
- 1:20Speaker 3: the snowmobile? And I never got it because I wasn't
- 1:21Speaker 3: in town. I had left town. Long story, but I
- 1:23Speaker 3: just left Minnesota as soon as possible.
- 1:25Speaker 1: By the way, that feels... Not great, right?
- 1:29Speaker 2: If everyone gets the gift except for you because you
- 1:32Speaker 2: left town early, it's silly.
- 1:35Speaker 3: I never got with the Giants either because I had
- 1:37Speaker 3: left town because I was hurt. So I was already
- 1:40Speaker 3: out of town when Eli got like... I think Eli
- 1:43Speaker 3: got the guys like cowboy boots one year in Nashville,
- 1:45Speaker 3: but I was already... I was injured. I didn't travel
- 1:48Speaker 3: in that game. It was already after my surgery. I
- 1:50Speaker 3: was already back, I think, in Charlotte.
- 1:52Speaker 2: I always buy my cowboy boots in Nashville, and that's
- 1:55Speaker 2: not– Eli was making really good money then. Cowboy boots
- 1:58Speaker 2: are cheap in Nashville. That's not a good gift for me.
- 2:00Speaker 2: A snowmobile, that's a generous gift.
- 2:03Speaker 3: I got a Breitling watch from Jonathan Stewart and Tanjo Williams. Okay. Okay.
- 2:08Speaker 3: And then one year, Alex Smith bought us Louis Vuitton
- 2:12Speaker 3: travel bags. Wow. But what I did is the travel
- 2:16Speaker 3: bag was nice. I have very large feet, and I
- 2:21Speaker 3: couldn't even put a pair of shoes in there. It
- 2:23Speaker 3: would just be the end of my... So I traded
- 2:26Speaker 3: in and got my wife a purse. That's nice. So
- 2:29Speaker 3: that was Mary's first big designer purse I ever bought
- 2:32Speaker 3: her was because of that. Yeah.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Don't say you bought it for her. Alex bought it
- 2:35Speaker 1: for her.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Well, yeah, Alex did. Alex bought her the purse. It
- 2:38Speaker 3: was like a four grand gift.
- 2:40Speaker 1: I mean, it was a nice purse I got her.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Does Alex know that you didn't keep his gift?
- 2:47Speaker 3: Now he does.
- 2:49Speaker 1: He listens to the show, I'm sure.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I'm sure he does. But my shoes didn't fit in
- 2:53Speaker 3: the bag. It was never going to work for me.
- 2:56Speaker 1: That's fine.
- 2:57Speaker 2: You don't have to wear shoes or use a bag
- 3:00Speaker 2: that doesn't fit your stuff.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Yeah, that's fair.
- 3:04Speaker 1: All right.
- 3:06Speaker 2: We started the show today weirdly talking about the Oregon Ducks.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Talking about Dante more in the grand philosophical sense because
- 3:16Speaker 2: he's back in practice. Non-contact is what we've been told.
- 3:19Speaker 2: I'm sure you know a lot more than I do
- 3:21Speaker 2: about it. But, you know, they're talking about having him
- 3:25Speaker 2: play against UCLA. I feel like that's doubtful, but maybe
- 3:29Speaker 2: he's going to come back and play. And, you know,
- 3:31Speaker 2: when we're talking about someone who, is highly compensated as
- 3:35Speaker 2: a college athlete, but is also projected to be in
- 3:38Speaker 2: probably the top five of an upcoming NFL draft. I
- 3:42Speaker 2: don't know how you weigh these options out if you're
- 3:44Speaker 2: somebody like Dante Moore. So as someone who actually played
- 3:47Speaker 2: and someone who knows more about the Oregon atmosphere in
- 3:51Speaker 2: that situation, like what are these conversations like right now
- 3:55Speaker 2: with Dante Moore, his family, his agents?
- 3:58Speaker 3: So I did see the reporters while he's practicing and, Um,
- 4:01Speaker 3: you know, part of the steps of being cleared from
- 4:03Speaker 3: concussion is you have to, you have to practice, right.
- 4:05Speaker 3: To go through, you know, workouts and see how you
- 4:08Speaker 3: feel afterwards. So I'm not, I'm not surprised he's doing it,
- 4:11Speaker 3: but I'm also, it's a little probably ahead of schedule
- 4:14Speaker 3: from what I thought after that injury. Right. I thought that,
- 4:17Speaker 3: you know, it would take a little bit longer, but again,
- 4:18Speaker 3: everyone recovers differently from head injuries. Right. So we don't
- 4:21Speaker 3: really know if, you know, if, uh, you know, he's
- 4:23Speaker 3: on the same path as anyone else. So I think it's,
- 4:25Speaker 3: it's good news. He's out there obviously. Right. Like, you know,
- 4:28Speaker 3: clearly good enough to go out there and practice, but
- 4:30Speaker 3: which is good. He came back to play, right? So
- 4:34Speaker 3: clearly he is in it to play this year. And
- 4:37Speaker 3: guys who are competitive and have a drive to win
- 4:42Speaker 3: want to see the field. He doesn't want to sit out, right?
- 4:45Speaker 3: He wants to play. And I think if he's healthy,
- 4:47Speaker 3: he's going to play. I felt it was kind of
- 4:49Speaker 3: odd that we immediately went to, like, Rayola should start
- 4:53Speaker 3: when he comes back. No, we've seen Rayola play for
- 4:56Speaker 3: 20 games. He might be great at some point for Oregon,
- 4:59Speaker 3: but Dante Moore is their dude. Dante Moore is definitely
- 5:02Speaker 3: going to start when he comes back. I think he'll
- 5:04Speaker 3: play when he's healthy. I think if Dan Lanning and
- 5:06Speaker 3: staff and the medical staff determine he's healthy to play
- 5:09Speaker 3: this week, he'll play this week. If not, he won't
- 5:11Speaker 3: play this week. And they'll be very cautious with it,
- 5:13Speaker 3: but if you pass all the tests, man, and there's
- 5:16Speaker 3: a multi-point test to come back to play, right? Part
- 5:21Speaker 3: of it is you have to get through a practice, right?
- 5:23Speaker 3: See how you feel afterwards. Do you have any more
- 5:25Speaker 3: concussion symptoms? Do you have any headaches and And it
- 5:28Speaker 3: starts with just a simple workout in the weight room,
- 5:30Speaker 3: and then it progresses to this. If he passes all
- 5:32Speaker 3: those checks, why would he not play, right? That's put
- 5:38Speaker 3: in place to make sure that you stay as healthy
- 5:41Speaker 3: as possible in these circumstances. You come back healthy as possible.
- 5:44Speaker 3: If he's cleared, Sean, I imagine he's going to play.
- 5:47Speaker 2: So you don't think there's any conversation in the Dante
- 5:49Speaker 2: Moore camp of being like, look, you probably could have
- 5:52Speaker 2: gone to the NFL draft last year.
- 5:54Speaker 1: You didn't.
- 5:55Speaker 2: And now we need to preserve whatever... This didn't seem like.
- 6:02Speaker 2: It didn't seem like the injury that's going to end
- 6:04Speaker 2: your season, but also Nick Bosa ended his season on
- 6:08Speaker 2: like a twisted ankle. So like when you're in that conversation,
- 6:12Speaker 2: do you say, Hey, you know what? Let's just be done.
- 6:15Speaker 2: Darren Peterson at Kansas wanted to do this last year.
- 6:17Speaker 2: The jazz ended up drafting him. He didn't want to
- 6:19Speaker 2: play college basketball, but he did because he was getting
- 6:22Speaker 2: a bunch of money.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Right.
- 6:23Speaker 2: And like Dante Moore, I don't know where, I don't
- 6:26Speaker 2: know if he loves playing at Oregon. I don't know
- 6:28Speaker 2: if it's like, that he's just doing this to make
- 6:31Speaker 2: it to the NFL and to sign a $ 27 million
- 6:34Speaker 2: signing bonus or whatever?
- 6:36Speaker 3: Well, I think what's interesting is he hasn't played terribly well.
- 6:43Speaker 3: I guess that's the wrong way to put it. He
- 6:44Speaker 3: hasn't played up to what people thought he would this year.
- 6:47Speaker 3: And so I wonder if some of him is like,
- 6:48Speaker 3: I just got to get back and put better film
- 6:50Speaker 3: out there. I'd rather just not sit out, that's the
- 6:54Speaker 3: wrong word to say it, but I'm okay if I
- 6:58Speaker 3: if I could have, if I could sit out or
- 7:01Speaker 3: had good enough film, I'd sit out. But Sean, he
- 7:04Speaker 3: has not played up to his standard so far this season.
- 7:08Speaker 3: And that might be why he would come back and
- 7:10Speaker 3: put better film out there. Nice. Okay.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So that is something that I think we have to
- 7:16Speaker 2: factor in here. If you're, if your first four games
- 7:20Speaker 2: are just like consensus, incredible, all American stuff, does it
- 7:24Speaker 2: change the conversation?
- 7:26Speaker 3: I think you would. Yes. He also has one more
- 7:29Speaker 3: year to come back, by the way. He's going to
- 7:31Speaker 3: have to go to the NFL. Right. I actually think
- 7:34Speaker 3: Raiola has less years than him.
- 7:37Speaker 1: Is that true?
- 7:38Speaker 3: I think it might be. But he can still come back.
- 7:42Speaker 3: So there's no rush in my mind for him to
- 7:45Speaker 3: come back. But again, if he's healthy, he's going to play.
- 7:47Speaker 3: I don't know why he would. These people think Raiola's
- 7:49Speaker 3: going to take his job. Raiola's not taking his job.
- 7:52Speaker 1: All right.
- 7:54Speaker 2: Warren Sharp and other people were tweeting about the... Excessive
- 7:59Speaker 2: over-officiating of NFL games so far this season. More flags
- 8:04Speaker 2: than you've had in over a decade through four weeks.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Number one most red zone penalties per game by offenses
- 8:11Speaker 2: in NFL history. Number one most penalties on third and
- 8:14Speaker 2: fourth downs in the second half of games in history.
- 8:16Speaker 2: 17 touchdowns nullified by penalties so far this year. Is
- 8:20Speaker 2: the NFL being over-officiated?
- 8:23Speaker 3: That just hurt my brain. It's like just... These people
- 8:27Speaker 3: are just, dude, they're so obsessed with the officials. I've
- 8:31Speaker 3: watched a lot of football. I'm sure you have on Sundays.
- 8:34Speaker 3: I have never said once we have too many penalties
- 8:38Speaker 3: this year. Now, do I think the officials are perfect? No,
- 8:40Speaker 3: they miss calls all the time. But they are human.
- 8:43Speaker 3: It's a very tough job to do. I think some
- 8:45Speaker 3: calls you just can't miss. But I think for the
- 8:47Speaker 3: most part, they do a pretty good job. I have
- 8:49Speaker 3: not noticed too many flags. I haven't noticed a hole
- 8:51Speaker 3: up in games with too many flags. And that's how,
- 8:53Speaker 3: of course, people go right to like, Well, this is
- 8:55Speaker 3: why I lost my bets. They're just– come on, man.
- 9:00Speaker 3: Come on. I just– Sean, these tweets just feel like
- 9:04Speaker 3: people trying to aggregate stuff. I watch a ton of football.
- 9:08Speaker 3: I don't notice it at all. I don't notice it
- 9:11Speaker 3: at all. The gameplay has been fine. The games have
- 9:13Speaker 3: been really good. There are bad calls. The refs are
- 9:17Speaker 3: not perfect. But I think it's just not close to
- 9:20Speaker 3: the same way that this tweet wants to make it
- 9:22Speaker 3: out to be.
- 9:23Speaker 2: Did you ever get a Trey McBride treatment from an official?
- 9:27Speaker 1: What's the harshest treatment you ever got?
- 9:29Speaker 3: Thank you. I'm glad we were talking about this. So
- 9:32Speaker 3: for those who missed it, have you talked about this yet?
- 9:35Speaker 1: Not really.
- 9:36Speaker 3: So there was a video of an official cussing at
- 9:39Speaker 3: a player. And my thought was like, yeah, that's what happens.
- 9:45Speaker 3: Like we yell at them, they yell at us. Okay.
- 9:50Speaker 3: I thought a two-game suspension for that felt harsh. Now,
- 9:53Speaker 3: the optics are not great, right? And maybe McBride was
- 9:57Speaker 3: the nicest guy all game, and he didn't deserve any
- 9:59Speaker 3: of this. But we cuss at referees, and they cuss
- 10:02Speaker 3: back at us. I didn't see the big issue. I
- 10:06Speaker 3: thought that was not that big of an issue. The
- 10:09Speaker 3: optics of it are pretty bad. I'll get the optics
- 10:11Speaker 3: of it don't look great. But, dude, that just did
- 10:14Speaker 3: not seem like a two-game suspension-worthy incident for me, considering
- 10:18Speaker 3: how much that they get abused from coaches and players
- 10:21Speaker 3: throughout the game. And, and we do the fair share
- 10:24Speaker 3: of that. It's a bad clip. I get it, but
- 10:28Speaker 3: without the context of why he said that two games,
- 10:30Speaker 3: it feels pretty heavy handed.
- 10:33Speaker 1: What about the guy who got knocked over and got
- 10:35Speaker 1: up mad?
- 10:36Speaker 3: Okay. So it's Adrian Hill, right? I was told afterwards
- 10:44Speaker 3: him and the guy, or he ran into it, how
- 10:46Speaker 3: to chat about it. We're laughing about it. So, If
- 10:49Speaker 3: that's the case and there's no ill will afterwards, why
- 10:52Speaker 3: is he being suspended again for a game? Like if
- 10:54Speaker 3: they talked it out, you got two grown men on
- 10:57Speaker 3: the field. Emotions are high. He gets run over. I
- 11:00Speaker 3: thought it was very unprofessional of the official to do that. Absolutely.
- 11:05Speaker 3: But suspension, if they talked it out, like right after
- 11:08Speaker 3: it happened and we're cool about it, it's supposed to
- 11:10Speaker 3: be excessive. So doesn't it?
- 11:11Speaker 1: I mean, yes.
- 11:13Speaker 2: And there's an article where he says he felt like
- 11:15Speaker 2: they were going to fight. You're not fighting a player.
- 11:18Speaker 3: No, that's silly. He shouldn't have said that. He said that?
- 11:23Speaker 3: That's not good.
- 11:24Speaker 1: No, sorry, that the players were going to fight, so
- 11:26Speaker 1: he got up and.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Oh. Yeah, that's not a great excuse. But I don't
- 11:31Speaker 3: think it's that big of a deal. I think the
- 11:32Speaker 3: suspensions feel aggressive in both instances.
- 11:38Speaker 2: I feel like the NFL is not usually as prisoner
- 11:42Speaker 2: to the moment as everyone else is when it comes
- 11:45Speaker 2: to stuff like this.
- 11:46Speaker 3: They're not.
- 11:47Speaker 1: But these are very reactive moves to the conversation, aren't they?
- 11:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I'm surprised. I think it's a lot to do with,
- 11:54Speaker 3: so I think the NFL has been the best league
- 11:56Speaker 3: at avoiding social media when it comes to how the
- 11:58Speaker 3: discourse of their league goes and, and how the punishments
- 12:01Speaker 3: go and just how they, how they, you know, basically
- 12:03Speaker 3: run their league. And this does feel like you sort
- 12:06Speaker 3: of have, you know, given into the mob, right? In essence,
- 12:09Speaker 3: the online mob. So I I'm with you on this.
- 12:11Speaker 3: I just, the NFL just has never really acted this way.
- 12:14Speaker 3: And in these instances, and so I'm surprised they're doing
- 12:16Speaker 3: it now. I really am like, there's just, there's no
- 12:19Speaker 3: need to suspend these guys.
- 12:21Speaker 2: No, there, there is, uh, to the world of college football,
- 12:25Speaker 2: whose seat is hotter. Dion Sanders or Kyle Whittingham.
- 12:30Speaker 3: Oof. Um, so my, my Kyle Whittingham rebuttal is basically,
- 12:36Speaker 3: it's been this, right? Like, He's the only coach who
- 12:39Speaker 3: didn't get to choose his quarterback this offseason.
- 12:42Speaker 2: I made that point yesterday when we were talking about
- 12:45Speaker 2: this because.
- 12:46Speaker 1: That's a massive thing here. It's like the most important
- 12:50Speaker 1: thing here.
- 12:51Speaker 3: Yes. So every other coach got to keep their quarterback
- 12:55Speaker 3: or get a new one, right? So, you know, Tosh
- 12:57Speaker 3: Lapoi got JKS. Nico stayed with Bob Chesney. Everyone else
- 13:02Speaker 3: got to bring in their own quarterback. He did not.
- 13:04Speaker 3: He was stuck with Bryce Underwood and very clearly does
- 13:06Speaker 3: not like Bryce Underwood as a quarterback. And it's unfair
- 13:10Speaker 3: to me to judge him. Are we pretending that Colin
- 13:14Speaker 3: had a coach? Of course he didn't forget he had
- 13:18Speaker 3: a coach. Quarterback stinks. Here's the thing.
- 13:21Speaker 2: We know this very well. I believe this about every coach.
- 13:25Speaker 2: We definitely know it about Kyle Whittingham. I don't think
- 13:28Speaker 2: you can overcome stinky quarterback play.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Kyle Whittingham... proved in his final year at Utah, right?
- 13:35Speaker 2: The reason he came back was to prove in his
- 13:37Speaker 2: final year at Utah was that like, I, my legacy
- 13:41Speaker 2: and who I am as a coach is not going
- 13:43Speaker 2: to be determined by stinky quarterback play and having to
- 13:45Speaker 2: go down to the fifth guy on the depth chart, right?
- 13:48Speaker 1: That whole injury situation.
- 13:50Speaker 2: And whether it was handled properly or not is a
- 13:52Speaker 2: different conversation, but that mess of not having the right
- 13:55Speaker 2: quarterback is why Kyle Whittingham was.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Like, I'm not going out on the sour note, a
- 14:00Speaker 1: losing record. I'm not doing it.
- 14:02Speaker 2: And then he came back and he had an 11
- 14:03Speaker 2: win season, 10 of which he coached. The 11th was
- 14:06Speaker 2: the bowl game that Morgan Scali coached, of course. And,
- 14:09Speaker 2: and that led to the Michigan opportunity. So look, I
- 14:13Speaker 2: don't think it's going well. I don't think he's doing
- 14:15Speaker 2: anything remotely perfect. I don't like the way that he
- 14:17Speaker 2: talks in the post game press conferences and compared to
- 14:20Speaker 2: what we got for 21 years from him at Utah.
- 14:23Speaker 1: Why?
- 14:23Speaker 3: Because he's more emotional than these?
- 14:25Speaker 1: Actually, I will say 20 years from what we got
- 14:27Speaker 1: at Utah.
- 14:28Speaker 2: So Kyle Whittingham, for years and years and years, he
- 14:33Speaker 2: was always like, dude, we screwed it up. Nobody cares. Injuries,
- 14:37Speaker 2: our fault. Bad timeout, my fault. We made the wrong play.
- 14:42Speaker 2: Our quarterback threw an interception, my fault. He was always
- 14:45Speaker 2: that guy forever and ever. And then last year, he
- 14:50Speaker 2: blamed the BYU loss on analytics. And then this year,
- 14:53Speaker 2: he's like, you know, when they lost to Iowa, he's like, God,
- 14:56Speaker 2: Jay Hill wanted to be in that formation.
- 14:58Speaker 1: It's like, whoa. That's not you.
- 15:00Speaker 3: I think... I just think it's... I don't know. I
- 15:11Speaker 3: think he feels it because he wasn't able to choose
- 15:13Speaker 3: the quarterback that he feels like maybe... He's just defending
- 15:16Speaker 3: himself a little bit more, right?
- 15:18Speaker 2: Which, by the way, I think is a totally valid excuse.
- 15:20Speaker 2: And we could talk all day about this. If the
- 15:24Speaker 2: money guys are the ones who decide who gets to
- 15:28Speaker 2: be your coach, but then the money guys are also like, well,
- 15:30Speaker 2: we already paid for this quarterback, so tell the coach
- 15:33Speaker 2: you've got to keep him. Then does the coach get
- 15:35Speaker 2: to go back to the money guys and be like,
- 15:37Speaker 2: you can't fire me because you stuck me with this
- 15:39Speaker 2: dumb kid?
- 15:41Speaker 3: Well, I think after this year, they'll let him choose
- 15:43Speaker 3: his quarterback as my guess. If he's still their coach,
- 15:45Speaker 3: maybe he's not. Yeah. Well, you know, the Dion thing,
- 15:49Speaker 3: like guys, he's not a good coach. He had one
- 15:53Speaker 3: year where he had, you know, his, his son, Travis Hunter.
- 15:56Speaker 3: Otherwise it's very clearly not a good coach. Dude, did
- 16:00Speaker 3: you see the play? They had eight players on the
- 16:02Speaker 3: field for a field goal block and then call timeout
- 16:04Speaker 3: and had nine players on the field. Next, next play.
- 16:07Speaker 3: It's not a good coach. It's incredible. That's fine. It's
- 16:10Speaker 3: just not good. Like, Hot seat's the wrong way to
- 16:12Speaker 3: put it. I mean, he just won't be back next year. And,
- 16:15Speaker 3: you know, I think that, you know, we talked about
- 16:18Speaker 3: this at a time when this happened. Like, sort of
- 16:22Speaker 3: the selling out of the program for Coach felt aggressive. Like,
- 16:27Speaker 3: you had people that brought, you know, that bought, like,
- 16:29Speaker 3: prime sweatshirts. They say prime on it, right, with the
- 16:32Speaker 3: Colorado Buffalo logo? Yes. Well, when he leaves, what's the
- 16:36Speaker 3: value of that sweatshirt? Like, it's still the Colorado program.
- 16:39Speaker 1: At that point, it's dead stock, so the value goes up.
- 16:42Speaker 3: I guess so. But it just feels dead. Like, you know,
- 16:46Speaker 3: he's run through coaches and players now, and they're not
- 16:49Speaker 3: a good football team. They're just really not. And, you know,
- 16:53Speaker 3: he had his chance in the one year with his
- 16:55Speaker 3: son and with Travis Hunter in the second year, and
- 16:58Speaker 3: you guys are going to beat them by 50 points
- 17:01Speaker 3: in two weeks. You might win this weekend by a
- 17:06Speaker 3: lot of points, I feel like.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Yeah, what do you think of Kansas?
- 17:09Speaker 3: I don't think they're very good, and you guys are
- 17:11Speaker 3: off a bye. Doesn't it feel so much better on
- 17:14Speaker 3: a Saturday to not have to stress about your team playing?
- 17:17Speaker 1: No, I hate bye weeks.
- 17:18Speaker 3: We both had byes. It was like Saturday was so stress-free.
- 17:22Speaker 1: No, but so boring.
- 17:24Speaker 3: I think we had a Thunderbats win on Saturday, too,
- 17:26Speaker 3: so we got a nice little win on Saturday. The
- 17:27Speaker 3: 6-0 Bats, baby.
- 17:29Speaker 1: All right.
- 17:31Speaker 3: You want to know something? So we play Thursday, Sean,
- 17:34Speaker 3: and I will not be there. I'm traveling back from
- 17:36Speaker 3: New York. On Thursday. And it's killing me because it's
- 17:39Speaker 3: the best team we play all year. I won't be there.
- 17:43Speaker 3: I'll be watching on the app. We have a video
- 17:45Speaker 3: stream of the game. And yesterday I was joking with Emmy.
- 17:49Speaker 3: I'll just text you my thoughts to your watch during
- 17:52Speaker 3: the game. And she's like, really? I'm like, no, Emerson.
- 17:55Speaker 3: I'm not going to text you. in the game. I
- 17:58Speaker 3: told her I'll just call pitches.
- 18:00Speaker 1: Is she tipping her pitches when there's a runner on
- 18:03Speaker 1: second base? Can they read like in the Padres-Brewers game?
- 18:06Speaker 3: How about that, dude? There had to be pitches tipped
- 18:10Speaker 3: because there's no way that Cheerio is taking a 1-2
- 18:14Speaker 3: slider after seeing 104. I was talking to one of
- 18:19Speaker 3: my producers on my bare-bed show. He's a former college
- 18:22Speaker 3: baseball player. Before he even saw all the stuff about
- 18:26Speaker 3: the tipping pitches. Yeah, they had to have it because
- 18:27Speaker 3: there's just no way you take that pitch after you've
- 18:30Speaker 3: seen four straight fastballs unless you know it's coming. And
- 18:34Speaker 3: then you saw, obviously, the Brewers' second baseman or the
- 18:36Speaker 3: runner on second signal. It's crazy that even with pitch
- 18:39Speaker 3: calm now, guys are still able to tip pitches based
- 18:43Speaker 3: on the way they hold the ball in the glove,
- 18:45Speaker 3: which is basically what he was doing, was to tell
- 18:47Speaker 3: based on how he was holding the ball in the glove.
- 18:50Speaker 3: That's crazy. It is crazy. A 104 fastball, then like
- 18:53Speaker 3: an 88 mile an hour slider. It's insane, dude.
- 18:59Speaker 2: The, the trade craft in baseball is so fascinating to
- 19:02Speaker 2: me because it's like, we've played this game for 125
- 19:05Speaker 2: years and they've figured out longer than that. And they
- 19:09Speaker 2: figured out just every possible way to mess with things,
- 19:14Speaker 2: to cheat things, to like rules versus unwritten rules.
- 19:18Speaker 3: It's, Dude, we had two games this week where the
- 19:20Speaker 3: ball hit the roof, and it was playable. It was
- 19:24Speaker 3: an insane, insane rule.
- 19:27Speaker 1: Very crazy.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Like, it's crazy they can do that. And, yeah, baseball
- 19:32Speaker 3: is all about finding these little edges and whatnot. It's
- 19:34Speaker 3: so funny because for softball, like, my steals and goals,
- 19:37Speaker 3: I just touch my sleeve. It was shocking. And all
- 19:40Speaker 3: the other team will be like, they're stealing. I'm like,
- 19:42Speaker 3: you can't throw anyone out anyways, so why does it matter? Congrats,
- 19:46Speaker 3: you know we're stealing.
- 19:48Speaker 1: Good for you.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Not a single girl's been thrown out in the four
- 19:50Speaker 3: years I've been coaching at second base. So it's not
- 19:53Speaker 3: going to start now.
- 19:55Speaker 1: You're fighting Justin Herbert's, our 0-4.
- 19:58Speaker 3: Oh, geez, buddy.
- 20:00Speaker 2: There's one team in the last million years that's started
- 20:03Speaker 2: 0-4 and still made the playoffs.
- 20:05Speaker 3: You knew that was, right? The Giants. The 92 Chargers.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Is that true? Yeah, I think so. Okay. Well. They're bad.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Michael McDaniel, oof, man. You know, Michael McDaniel is running
- 20:21Speaker 3: the two offense for Herbert. Like, run the Herbert offense, man. Like,
- 20:24Speaker 3: what are we doing here? You know, Herbert's not played great.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Don't get me wrong, but they do not help him
- 20:29Speaker 3: out with protection, with scheme, with drop passes. They just.
- 20:35Speaker 3: Harbaugh legitimately will be in the hot seat, dude.
- 20:41Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh is on the hot seat with the Chargers
- 20:45Speaker 1: after four games, in your opinion.
- 20:47Speaker 3: Yeah. Next USC head coach? He has, like, a one-year suspension, though,
- 20:54Speaker 3: with a show clause. Yeah. But, I mean, if USC
- 20:58Speaker 3: can stomach one more year of Lincoln Riley, they can
- 20:59Speaker 3: just hire Harbaugh. Let's do one more year of Riley.
- 21:02Speaker 2: James says two more years. Maybe you just trade. Lincoln
- 21:05Speaker 2: Riley goes to the Chargers.
- 21:07Speaker 3: I want Lincoln Riley to stay forever.
- 21:10Speaker 1: That would be nice.
- 21:12Speaker 2: USC just continued to be angry for the next two decades.
- 21:16Speaker 3: They've won one big game in five years. They beat
- 21:19Speaker 3: Notre Dame one of those years that he was there,
- 21:21Speaker 3: maybe his first year. They lost Utah every time, lost
- 21:23Speaker 3: Oregon every time. They've lost every big game they've played,
- 21:27Speaker 3: and they've lost.
- 21:29Speaker 2: Should I buy my Super Bowl tickets yet because the
- 21:31Speaker 2: San Francisco 49ers are gone?
- 21:34Speaker 3: I mean, unless a substation takes the rest of your team. Don't.
- 21:37Speaker 1: Don't even mention it.
- 21:39Speaker 3: What do you make of the substitution thing?
- 21:41Speaker 1: I am a full believer.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Of course you are. I couldn't answer that for myself.
- 21:44Speaker 2: Yes, you know exactly how I'm going to answer that question.
- 21:51Speaker 3: By the way, I know you had texted me about
- 21:53Speaker 3: what to talk about today and talk about internet trolls. Yes.
- 21:57Speaker 3: I got a text from Guy Haberman this morning. It
- 21:59Speaker 3: was so good. He screenshotted one of the tweets I
- 22:03Speaker 3: sent out with this guy. I've been harassing for weeks.
- 22:07Speaker 3: And he says, those guys don't know Jeff. Can't be offended.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Good luck to them. They don't know thy enemy. I'm like, yeah, buddy.
- 22:13Speaker 1: That's right.
- 22:14Speaker 3: You picked on the wrong person.
- 22:16Speaker 1: They got to read a little Sun Tzu. They do
- 22:18Speaker 1: not know their enemy.
- 22:19Speaker 3: No, they do not. But the substation, of course, you
- 22:23Speaker 3: would believe in that. No surprise for that. definitely not
- 22:27Speaker 3: the reason why, but if you have a, yeah, if
- 22:28Speaker 3: you have a, if you don't have guys healthy, but dude,
- 22:30Speaker 3: I mean, Shanahan is such a good coach, man. Like it's,
- 22:34Speaker 3: he's just an incredible coach. He deserves to win a
- 22:35Speaker 3: tight championship at some point. It's in, it's in Los Angeles.
- 22:41Speaker 1: It's in LA.
- 22:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I could go stay with your parents, save on the hotel.
- 22:45Speaker 3: Sure. They would love that actually.
- 22:46Speaker 2: And, uh, yeah, there's tickets now are only like $ 7, 000
- 22:52Speaker 2: for obstructed view.
- 22:53Speaker 3: Meredith's probably coming to LA for super bowl week though. Really? Probably.
- 22:57Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. That's see, then I give my wife
- 22:59Speaker 1: something to do. She can go hang out with your wife.
- 23:01Speaker 1: Although the shopping they did would cost me more than
- 23:04Speaker 1: the super.
- 23:05Speaker 3: How much money are they going to spend? Nevermind. Nevermind.
- 23:10Speaker 3: I was like, I was like, how much money are
- 23:11Speaker 3: they going to spend? Um, yeah, dude, it's, uh, it's no, well, she's,
- 23:17Speaker 3: she's actually been better with the shop being ish. I've been,
- 23:21Speaker 3: I've been proud of her. She spends money everywhere things,
- 23:23Speaker 3: but like, It's been better with shopping, which I do like.
- 23:27Speaker 3: All our money on vacations, though.
- 23:30Speaker 1: I want you to.
- 23:32Speaker 2: Apropos of nothing, there was a former NFL linebacker on
- 23:37Speaker 2: the UFC card this last weekend in Salt Lake City.
- 23:43Speaker 2: He had his cup of coffee in the NFL. His
- 23:47Speaker 2: name is Anthony Wint. He fought for like 20 seconds.
- 23:53Speaker 2: The guy that the guy that he was fighting was
- 23:54Speaker 2: just so scared of how like physically overwhelming he was
- 23:59Speaker 2: to beat him. He kind of like faked and fell down.
- 24:01Speaker 2: He only got hit with one punch and just fell
- 24:03Speaker 2: down and was like, I'm done. I don't want to
- 24:04Speaker 2: do this anymore.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Sounds like a fix was in.
- 24:07Speaker 2: Well, it, it almost would have looked like that except
- 24:09Speaker 2: the guy was just like, you know, he's like a
- 24:12Speaker 2: chubby 260 pound guy going up against a five foot
- 24:16Speaker 2: 11 inch, 240 pound.
- 24:18Speaker 1: Ball of muscle. And he was just like, Oh crap,
- 24:20Speaker 1: this is crazy.
- 24:21Speaker 2: So, um, I, The reason I want you to watch
- 24:26Speaker 2: it is because like this guy was not a good
- 24:29Speaker 2: NFL player.
- 24:30Speaker 1: He was great in college.
- 24:31Speaker 2: He's the all time leading tackler in Florida international history
- 24:34Speaker 2: or something. So he was an, he was an awesome
- 24:36Speaker 2: player at that level.
- 24:37Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:37Speaker 2: And then he couldn't really hack into the NFL, but
- 24:39Speaker 2: now it's like, he is the best athlete in the
- 24:43Speaker 2: sport of MMA. And it just is as an MMA
- 24:46Speaker 2: guy or as an NFL guy, I just want to
- 24:49Speaker 2: show you what it looks like when people with your
- 24:50Speaker 2: athleticism are Come to this other sport.
- 24:54Speaker 3: Wasn't Scooby Wright doing some of this?
- 24:56Speaker 1: He did. He trained. He never fought.
- 24:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 25:00Speaker 1: Shout out to two-star Scoob.
- 25:01Speaker 3: I would probably be a good UFC guy.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Former NFL wide receiver in Colorado Buffalo, Michael Westbrook, actually
- 25:11Speaker 2: was a pro fighter after his NFL career, and he
- 25:13Speaker 2: had a long NFL career.
- 25:15Speaker 1: He started fighting when he was in his 30s.
- 25:18Speaker 3: Did you go to the fights? I did. That's interesting.
- 25:22Speaker 3: That's like someone who covers football go into a football
- 25:26Speaker 3: game where they don't cover it, I guess. Yeah. Did
- 25:29Speaker 3: your wife go with you?
- 25:30Speaker 1: She did, yes.
- 25:31Speaker 3: She liked it?
- 25:32Speaker 1: Yeah, she likes fights. She enjoys fights.
- 25:34Speaker 3: I've got to tell you, Meredith loves it now. Yeah, well.
- 25:37Speaker 3: All in.
- 25:38Speaker 1: Hopefully we're in Charlotte again next year.
- 25:40Speaker 3: When do you get the schedule again? You won't know
- 25:42Speaker 3: for a little bit, probably.
- 25:43Speaker 1: Yeah, probably like the month before we get the event.
- 25:45Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 25:47Speaker 3: We're in. Hopefully there's a VIP section this time.
- 25:51Speaker 1: I'll do my best.
- 25:53Speaker 3: My wife was so angry. I was like, does it
- 25:55Speaker 3: appear to be VIP sex? She's like, fine. We'll just
- 25:59Speaker 3: sit four rows in the cage. Yeah.
- 26:02Speaker 1: How dare you?
- 26:03Speaker 3: Sit four rows in the cage. Watch fights for nonstop
- 26:07Speaker 3: for four hours in a row. What do you do?
- 26:09Speaker 3: So when a fight goes one minute, right? You have
- 26:12Speaker 3: to fill the next 15. Are you guys prepared to
- 26:16Speaker 3: do that? Or do you have to make it up
- 26:17Speaker 3: on the fly?
- 26:17Speaker 2: Well, you just make it up on the fly. But
- 26:19Speaker 2: you kind of know... what you're going to talk about.
- 26:21Speaker 2: You push the next event, and then you push the
- 26:24Speaker 2: main event coming up on that same night.
- 26:26Speaker 3: Just repeating the same stuff, essentially.
- 26:28Speaker 1: For the most part, yeah.
- 26:29Speaker 3: Yeah, that makes sense.
- 26:30Speaker 2: Yeah, but I mean, you know, the first time you
- 26:32Speaker 2: stand up, you have 30 seconds or 60 seconds to
- 26:34Speaker 2: talk about it. So if you're emptying your clip with
- 26:38Speaker 2: that 60 seconds, it means you didn't do enough prep.
- 26:41Speaker 3: Oh, no, certainly. I'm just saying, like, there were some
- 26:43Speaker 3: fights you had to do, like, 12 minutes of filibustering.
- 26:46Speaker 1: Yes, for sure.
- 26:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:47Speaker 1: But you know me. I can filibuster with the best
- 26:49Speaker 1: of them.
- 26:50Speaker 3: So can I. That's why we're never on time.
- 26:54Speaker 2: Just like right now, over the clock. Appreciate you joining
- 26:57Speaker 2: us as you do every single Tuesday. And I guess
- 27:02Speaker 2: we'll talk this weekend on the group chat when we're
- 27:04Speaker 2: making fun of USC.
- 27:05Speaker 3: Oh, they're losing to Penn State this weekend, by the way, too.
- 27:07Speaker 3: It's going to be a rough one.
- 27:09Speaker 2: That'll be the nail in the coffin for Lincoln Riley, right?
- 27:13Speaker 3: I can't feel like... I don't know who does Dan
- 27:15Speaker 3: root for. I can't figure it out.
- 27:17Speaker 1: He roots for every team... That was in the Pac-12.
- 27:21Speaker 3: I was just a pure Pac-12 guy. Interesting. Just a
- 27:27Speaker 3: pure homer. Cool. Thanks, dude. Appreciate you. All right, bud. Bye.
- 27:30Speaker 3: Have a good week. Bye.
- 27:31Speaker 2: Jeff Schwartz, longtime NFL veteran, former Oregon Duck, betting insider
- 27:37Speaker 2: and expert. Check him out on his Bears Bets show. And,
- 27:40Speaker 2: of course, listen to him every week right here on
- 27:42Speaker 2: ESPN 700 and 92.1 FM.
