- 0:00Speaker 1: Fellas.
- 0:01Speaker 2: Welcome to another Best of the Bust episode, where we
- 0:04Speaker 2: drop an episode every Saturday recapping some of our best
- 0:07Speaker 2: of episodes and interviews back in the day. CJ Stroud
- 0:11Speaker 2: hopped on a zoom call with the boys back in
- 0:13Speaker 2: twenty twenty three and we talked about his early success
- 0:16Speaker 2: in Houston, took some playful shots at his Ohio state
- 0:19Speaker 2: dates because of course, you know, go blue Taylor's a
- 0:21Speaker 2: Michigan boy, and wrapped it up with his worst rookie
- 0:25Speaker 2: moment in a spooptober Tier talk.
- 0:28Speaker 1: This is one for the books.
- 0:29Speaker 2: CJ's one of the boys and we got to get
- 0:31Speaker 2: him on the bus next offseason.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Enjoy this one. Big hugs, tiny kisses, CJ.
- 0:38Speaker 3: What's up man?
- 0:39Speaker 1: What's up? Brow doing? Good man? How are you?
- 0:43Speaker 3: I'm good man, blessed.
- 0:45Speaker 4: I love that we are we rolling.
- 0:49Speaker 5: Yeah, there's three people on this busn No, let's give
- 0:51Speaker 5: a round of a plus for cjs drug best quarterback
- 0:53Speaker 5: of Ohio state history, already proven best quarterback of all time. Brother,
- 0:57Speaker 5: listen getting drafted by the Houston Texas. I know you're
- 1:00Speaker 5: sitting there and the PR guys are sitting right behind
- 1:02Speaker 5: the computer right now, trying to tell you what to
- 1:04Speaker 5: say and not to say when you get drafted by Houston.
- 1:06Speaker 5: People were saying the franchise, like, franchise might be dead,
- 1:10Speaker 5: a lot of issues. You've come in and have truly
- 1:13Speaker 5: played incredible. Yes, really, what was what was the vibe
- 1:17Speaker 5: when you got drafts where people like, oh, Houston, or
- 1:20Speaker 5: were they like fired up for you?
- 1:23Speaker 3: I know my inner circle like and including me, I
- 1:25Speaker 3: was excited.
- 1:27Speaker 6: I've always loved challenges and loved new things to work
- 1:31Speaker 6: on and to be better at. And I haven't been
- 1:34Speaker 6: anywhere where we've been bad, so it was kind of
- 1:36Speaker 6: new and just being honest with myself the situation I saw.
- 1:40Speaker 6: I knew there's a lot of work was gonna be
- 1:42Speaker 6: how to be made so and I was inducting from that.
- 1:45Speaker 6: And so me and my family we were really excited, man,
- 1:47Speaker 6: because not only was it a new opportunity to flip
- 1:50Speaker 6: something around, but Houston is a great city and I.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Didn't want to live in the middle of nowhere anymore.
- 1:55Speaker 6: So, which Columbus isn't. But I didn't want to live
- 1:57Speaker 6: in the Midwest no more. So it was good to
- 1:59Speaker 6: be to a city that was kind of they were
- 2:03Speaker 6: proud of being who they were, and I was just
- 2:05Speaker 6: ready for them to rep detections at that point. So
- 2:07Speaker 6: that's what my goal was. And I feel like I'm
- 2:09Speaker 6: compting that a little bit. We got a lot more
- 2:12Speaker 6: to go in the tank.
- 2:14Speaker 2: So, dude, you really have You've had a You've had
- 2:17Speaker 2: an incredible year thus far as a rookie. And I
- 2:21Speaker 2: just use the word surprising in like an impressed way,
- 2:24Speaker 2: like it's been very impressive to see you play and
- 2:27Speaker 2: how everything is unfolded for you when you got drafted
- 2:30Speaker 2: to Houston. I know you haven't played anywhere else in
- 2:32Speaker 2: the NFL, But what do you feel like the organization
- 2:34Speaker 2: and the staff and the culture has kind of done
- 2:37Speaker 2: to transition you into the NFL? Because you hear you
- 2:40Speaker 2: hear it every year when rookie quarterbacks they play right away,
- 2:44Speaker 2: they struggle, they do this, it's almost like doing them
- 2:47Speaker 2: a disservice to play them right away. What do you
- 2:49Speaker 2: feel like that organization and staff has done to help
- 2:52Speaker 2: you transition so well to the to the NFL.
- 2:56Speaker 6: I really believe that they had a plan for me
- 2:59Speaker 6: when I got in here, not only just myself, but
- 3:02Speaker 6: just like the scheme that we run Bobby Slogroc has
- 3:06Speaker 6: done a great job. He coming from the forty nine
- 3:08Speaker 6: ers with Kyle Shanahan, so we run the West Coast offense,
- 3:11Speaker 6: and he.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Did a great job of putting pieces together that.
- 3:14Speaker 6: Kind of fit my playing style on top of the
- 3:17Speaker 6: offensive scheme. And then coach did really well along with
- 3:21Speaker 6: our receiver coach Ben and Draw Johnson, our quarterback coach
- 3:24Speaker 6: or try to coach Jake morland O, Lion coach, coach Strawson.
- 3:27Speaker 6: We've all kind of bought into this new scheme. Uh
- 3:30Speaker 6: So that was kind of testament to what he's done
- 3:32Speaker 6: over with Kyle and Kyle Chinahan with the Niners and
- 3:36Speaker 6: brought it here and kind of did his own twist
- 3:39Speaker 6: to it, which has been great. But man, I really
- 3:41Speaker 6: believe that, Man, you don't. I don't believe that you
- 3:43Speaker 6: kind of lose talent once you become.
- 3:46Speaker 3: To the league.
- 3:46Speaker 6: I think either you work hard or you're just in
- 3:49Speaker 6: the You're you either don't work hard or you just
- 3:51Speaker 6: go into a bad situation. So I really don't think
- 3:54Speaker 6: it's a it's in between. So for me, no matter
- 3:57Speaker 6: what the situation was, it was never gonna be on me.
- 3:59Speaker 6: I was just gonna work really hard to make sure
- 4:01Speaker 6: that this thing went the right way.
- 4:02Speaker 5: When you think leadership, when you think about the quarterback
- 4:05Speaker 5: position as an automatic leader, you're basically guaranteed to see
- 4:08Speaker 5: on your chest. And you're walking into coming from a
- 4:11Speaker 5: college locker room where everyone's hanging out the boys. You
- 4:13Speaker 5: guys are all kind of going out on the weekends
- 4:14Speaker 5: doing your thing. Now you're in the NFL where you know,
- 4:17Speaker 5: nine ten year vets are married, they got multiple kids
- 4:20Speaker 5: and stuff like that. How did you approach the process
- 4:22Speaker 5: of becoming a leader in that locker room.
- 4:25Speaker 6: Yeah, for me, I wanted to let it be known
- 4:29Speaker 6: when I first got drafted, like I don't want anything
- 4:31Speaker 6: to be given to me on earn everything. And for
- 4:33Speaker 6: me coming from a place like a house state, like
- 4:36Speaker 6: that's how it was there, and that's why I feel
- 4:38Speaker 6: like I was able to grip that locker room and
- 4:42Speaker 6: to fall in love with me and understanding that I
- 4:45Speaker 6: was a natural born leader, not just somebody who was
- 4:47Speaker 6: just a quarterback. So I was kind of like the
- 4:50Speaker 6: same thought process here where I was gonna come here
- 4:51Speaker 6: and try to not just win guys over, but make
- 4:54Speaker 6: them trust me not only on the field, but off,
- 4:56Speaker 6: So just spending time with guys, a building core relationships
- 5:01Speaker 6: and not just the small conversations on just man, how
- 5:05Speaker 6: how this doing, and not really caring and not talking
- 5:08Speaker 6: about it every again, but really just having de conversation
- 5:10Speaker 6: with guys and just being myself.
- 5:12Speaker 3: I think that I've done a decent job.
- 5:14Speaker 6: Along well with Will. Will is also captain. But something
- 5:18Speaker 6: that we could admit to is man, we weren't giving it.
- 5:20Speaker 6: We earned that, and we brought a new swagen and
- 5:23Speaker 6: new type of mindsetting and.
- 5:25Speaker 3: To this culture.
- 5:26Speaker 6: And I think Demico also has that, and that's why
- 5:29Speaker 6: he gave us that see on our chest to represent
- 5:31Speaker 6: the Texans like we do.
- 5:33Speaker 2: So you come from Ohio State, you come from a
- 5:36Speaker 2: conference that's the toughest, most competitive conference in the country.
- 5:39Speaker 2: You play against some of the best defenses you'll ever see,
- 5:42Speaker 2: like the ones in Nebraska. Is the NFL That is
- 5:46Speaker 2: the NFL as big as as big of a jump
- 5:48Speaker 2: as you thought it'd be, or is it a little
- 5:51Speaker 2: easier than you thought it'd be.
- 5:53Speaker 6: I would say it's like in between. I wouldn't say
- 5:56Speaker 6: it's easy nor like super hard. I feel like football
- 5:59Speaker 6: is football, and of course the players get better the
- 6:03Speaker 6: windows are smaller, throwers are. You got to be more efficient,
- 6:06Speaker 6: a lot more accurate. But I mean, I feel like
- 6:09Speaker 6: that's the that's the fun part of the game. That's
- 6:11Speaker 6: what I enjoy. That's what I love, just the grind
- 6:14Speaker 6: of like how detailed you got to be to execute
- 6:17Speaker 6: your job every play and just go want to know play.
- 6:20Speaker 6: And I think sometimes as a young player, you can
- 6:22Speaker 6: try to do so much on one player really just
- 6:26Speaker 6: you you think that you're superman when you come out
- 6:29Speaker 6: of college. But for me, I knew that man, I
- 6:32Speaker 6: had to grow and I to learn, and I knew
- 6:35Speaker 6: that if I put into work, not only would I
- 6:37Speaker 6: be good, but I would hopefully be great and leave
- 6:40Speaker 6: my guys to victory and leave my guys to be better.
- 6:44Speaker 6: And then that's kind of like the mindset I've had
- 6:46Speaker 6: was just want to know each play and not trying
- 6:49Speaker 6: to put too much.
- 6:49Speaker 3: On my plate, control the controllables.
- 6:51Speaker 6: And I know it's easy to say, it's harder to do,
- 6:54Speaker 6: but I really try hard to just get on my
- 6:56Speaker 6: routine and make sure that I was simplifying every thing
- 7:00Speaker 6: so I can just play fast on Sundays. And of
- 7:03Speaker 6: course my team around me has done a great job.
- 7:05Speaker 6: I have a great marketing team, a great agent, a
- 7:08Speaker 6: great manager assistant. I have a great team around me
- 7:11Speaker 6: that kind of filter out a lot of stuff so
- 7:13Speaker 6: I can just focus on ball, which is a super
- 7:16Speaker 6: good thing for me and a blessing.
- 7:18Speaker 5: When you came from college, you you came from a
- 7:21Speaker 5: system that you look to the sideline and you see
- 7:23Speaker 5: a cool you know, hardboard, and you look at a
- 7:26Speaker 5: couple of pictures and then you know what the play is.
- 7:28Speaker 5: What was the process like for you to learn the
- 7:30Speaker 5: verbiage and bring it into a huddle and be able
- 7:34Speaker 5: to be confident and spew it and not only spew it,
- 7:36Speaker 5: but know it as well.
- 7:37Speaker 4: Was that a difficult thing?
- 7:38Speaker 3: Yeah? It was.
- 7:39Speaker 6: It was tough, man, because everything, like you said, in
- 7:42Speaker 6: college is all signals, so uh it was. It was
- 7:46Speaker 6: even harder learning those signals when I first out to college.
- 7:49Speaker 6: And then when you get to lead, you got to
- 7:50Speaker 6: throw it out the way and get used to that
- 7:52Speaker 6: headset and the ear piece that's in your your helmet,
- 7:56Speaker 6: which is isn't always the most clear thing ever, So it.
- 7:58Speaker 3: Kind of just got to get you to like the.
- 8:01Speaker 6: I would say, the accent in there, like it sounds
- 8:04Speaker 6: like gibbers sometimes, So you got to really know your
- 8:06Speaker 6: plays so you can piece it together. And really, you
- 8:09Speaker 6: want to tell a story right you're in there. You
- 8:10Speaker 6: don't want to just ram through the play and make
- 8:13Speaker 6: it seem like it can sound like something else. You
- 8:16Speaker 6: want to like tell a story and give it really
- 8:19Speaker 6: detailed so guys know exactly what's going on. So that
- 8:22Speaker 6: was a really big jump coming from that. And of
- 8:24Speaker 6: course in the Big Ten there was a lot of
- 8:28Speaker 6: defenses that were like NFL styles, so that kind of
- 8:31Speaker 6: helped me as well, kind of going back to your
- 8:34Speaker 6: question from the last question, so it was kind of
- 8:37Speaker 6: a little bit of both though.
- 8:39Speaker 3: I was learning the new.
- 8:42Speaker 6: Idea of listening to in the headset to going out
- 8:45Speaker 6: there and then looking at the defense from a huddle
- 8:49Speaker 6: and not like being out there the whole time and
- 8:51Speaker 6: be able to see as you're getting to play.
- 8:53Speaker 4: Can I just say something before you ask the next question?
- 8:55Speaker 1: Go ahead?
- 8:55Speaker 5: I want to give a shout out to your PR team.
- 8:58Speaker 5: They have done in a phenomenal job up of Hey,
- 9:01Speaker 5: this is what you say, this is what you don't say.
- 9:02Speaker 5: You seem like you you're doing a great job of
- 9:05Speaker 5: being a pro in this moment and kind of trying
- 9:07Speaker 5: to decipher that what the show is all about, and
- 9:10Speaker 5: you kind of just coming and think, hey, answer it.
- 9:12Speaker 5: Don't give him too much, too much BULLETI material or anything.
- 9:14Speaker 2: Like that him like you know, maybe maybe he maybe
- 9:17Speaker 2: he needs more credit.
- 9:17Speaker 5: Yeah, but he plays plays with too much swack, plays
- 9:20Speaker 5: with too much he you know, and you can tell
- 9:22Speaker 5: he's meticulous. He's trying to make sure that he doesn't
- 9:24Speaker 5: say anything wrong right now. And I love that. Ye,
- 9:26Speaker 5: that's the thing you should do.
- 9:27Speaker 2: I think what I love hearing is when he talks
- 9:29Speaker 2: about doing the you know, because I've played on defense,
- 9:32Speaker 2: like I've you know, whether or not wearing the green
- 9:35Speaker 2: dot and telling a story. Like as he's talking about
- 9:37Speaker 2: the plays, delivering the plays and like you kind of
- 9:38Speaker 2: got to tell a story.
- 9:39Speaker 1: It's like when he's sitting there, he's.
- 9:41Speaker 2: On a knee, talking to his huddle and like giving
- 9:44Speaker 2: the energy throughout the play on like we're kind of
- 9:46Speaker 2: in this situation some guys, you know, whether you're sticking
- 9:50Speaker 2: up your arm here, you're like, you're kind of telling
- 9:51Speaker 2: a story.
- 9:52Speaker 1: What I want to go back to is you talk about.
- 9:53Speaker 2: This one and O mentality and You're like, it's easier
- 9:55Speaker 2: said than done. Do you have any you know, pro
- 10:00Speaker 2: process or something you lean on or something you've picked
- 10:03Speaker 2: up and learned that you really try and lean into
- 10:05Speaker 2: during this, because you're right, it is really hard to
- 10:08Speaker 2: go want to know every play, it's hard to forget
- 10:09Speaker 2: about a failure you might have had just to play before. Uh,
- 10:12Speaker 2: is there anything there or you feel like you've just
- 10:14Speaker 2: kind of cultivated this naturally.
- 10:17Speaker 3: I would say a little bit of both.
- 10:19Speaker 6: I would be lying if I said I've always been
- 10:21Speaker 6: kind of cool, calm, like let stuff go, like just
- 10:24Speaker 6: being young and amateur. Like probably even before college and
- 10:28Speaker 6: going into college, I was very, very like fiery and
- 10:33Speaker 6: I didn't take no bs like I just was was.
- 10:36Speaker 3: That's just who I was, and I still am that way.
- 10:38Speaker 6: But I know how to kind of put that to
- 10:41Speaker 6: the side when it's not necessary, which is important especially
- 10:44Speaker 6: as a quarterback. Everybody's looking at you when stuff hits
- 10:47Speaker 6: the fans. So for me, I mean, I always lean
- 10:49Speaker 6: on my faith and I try to pray through things
- 10:52Speaker 6: and just have like some breathing exercises that I do.
- 10:55Speaker 3: But when those things, I mean, those things usually work.
- 10:59Speaker 6: But I also kind of just understand man like thinking
- 11:03Speaker 6: about the last play, like what benefit does that do me?
- 11:07Speaker 6: What is that going to help in the long run
- 11:10Speaker 6: in the future, So you might as well just throw
- 11:12Speaker 6: it away and go to the next play, because I'm
- 11:16Speaker 6: king of like man like man after the game rewatching
- 11:19Speaker 6: a bad clip ten times, like man, I should have
- 11:22Speaker 6: did that, I should do this. I mean, when you're
- 11:23Speaker 6: moving out the speed of light, man, And you know
- 11:25Speaker 6: how y'all both played in the league for a long
- 11:27Speaker 6: time at a high level, you're moving so fast. Sometimes
- 11:30Speaker 6: your body and your mind just does things. So you
- 11:33Speaker 6: gotta play with your instincts at the same time and
- 11:35Speaker 6: give yourself a little bit of credit even when you
- 11:37Speaker 6: do make a mistake, because I think as players we
- 11:40Speaker 6: can be our biggest critic and that's a good thing.
- 11:42Speaker 6: But sometime you got to build yourself up just like
- 11:44Speaker 6: you break yourself down when you know you have to
- 11:46Speaker 6: keep yourself accountable. So I try to do both, but
- 11:50Speaker 6: more so in anything, I try to make sure that
- 11:52Speaker 6: I have a playing face that I'm saving, even keel
- 11:54Speaker 6: about the whole game, because I know that just how
- 11:57Speaker 6: your next play could have been, your last play could
- 11:59Speaker 6: have been bad, It could have been good too, so
- 12:01Speaker 6: you gotta let that go as well.
- 12:02Speaker 3: So it's a little bit of both.
- 12:03Speaker 1: That's man, that's that's that's really well said.
- 12:05Speaker 2: It was there. There was there a moment, not I
- 12:08Speaker 2: know that's like a combination of moments, right, But was
- 12:10Speaker 2: there a time where you were losing your cool and
- 12:12Speaker 2: maybe you had a conversation kind of made you rethink.
- 12:15Speaker 1: About it in zoom out You're like, oh, yeah, I
- 12:17Speaker 1: kind of see this.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Was it observing somebody like because you said, like I
- 12:21Speaker 2: wasn't always like this, like sometimes I wouldn't let shit go.
- 12:23Speaker 2: But like, was there was there a loss that you had,
- 12:26Speaker 2: like at a game in college or was there a
- 12:29Speaker 2: sequence of plays to kind of make you rethink.
- 12:31Speaker 3: That, Yeah, it was all the way back in college.
- 12:34Speaker 2: Man.
- 12:34Speaker 3: I actually was just in Columbus this.
- 12:36Speaker 6: Past weekend and I was talking to my running back
- 12:40Speaker 6: coach Tony Alford, and at the time, like, you know,
- 12:45Speaker 6: you see your buddies on the other side of the
- 12:47Speaker 6: country who stay home, or like you see some guys
- 12:50Speaker 6: that you felt better than playing well and like the
- 12:53Speaker 6: time I was a plan as a freshman and like
- 12:55Speaker 6: being myself, Like, man, I feel like like I know
- 12:58Speaker 6: I wasn't a playoff for Justin, but like, I feel like, man,
- 13:00Speaker 6: we were up a lot, like I should have got
- 13:02Speaker 6: in and stuff like that, and I was like, man,
- 13:04Speaker 6: I'm ready to go home, Like I'm tired of Columbus.
- 13:05Speaker 6: I want to I want to leave, Like I want
- 13:08Speaker 6: to do this, I want to do that. You know,
- 13:09Speaker 6: you're just talking. I remember I sat down for like
- 13:12Speaker 6: three hours with my running back coach after practice in
- 13:14Speaker 6: the freezing code and we were just talking, man, just
- 13:16Speaker 6: about everything. And so like, I go back to that
- 13:19Speaker 6: moment and I was kind of like a really big
- 13:23Speaker 6: moment for me to just to mature as a man.
- 13:25Speaker 6: And he was just being honest with me that whole time,
- 13:27Speaker 6: and he really was just saying, man, comparison is a
- 13:30Speaker 6: thief for joy. My dad used to always tell me
- 13:32Speaker 6: that as a kid, like comparing yourself to somebody on
- 13:36Speaker 6: social media, especially in the social media day and age
- 13:38Speaker 6: where everybody's posting their wings and victories and a lot
- 13:40Speaker 6: of his fate. Like back then, when my dad was
- 13:44Speaker 6: telling me, it wasn't so alarming to me because I
- 13:47Speaker 6: was just a kid at the time. But when my
- 13:49Speaker 6: coach said that, it made me think about when my
- 13:51Speaker 6: dad used to tell me, and man, you compare yourself
- 13:54Speaker 6: to others, Man.
- 13:54Speaker 3: You don't really get to love your life.
- 13:56Speaker 6: I love what you're going through, and you have to
- 13:58Speaker 6: go through some type of struggle to be.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Great, I mean anything.
- 14:01Speaker 6: So that was a moment where like, man, it was
- 14:04Speaker 6: like all made since and then I can't. I started
- 14:06Speaker 6: getting a lot more mature, a lot more. I started
- 14:07Speaker 6: calming down more.
- 14:09Speaker 1: That's amazing.
- 14:10Speaker 5: That is incredible. You talk about your relationship with your
- 14:12Speaker 5: running back coach in high school. Have you been able
- 14:14Speaker 5: to find a similar type of relationship in the NFL
- 14:17Speaker 5: with one of your coaches now that you're able to
- 14:19Speaker 5: lean on from an emotional standpoint when things don't go well,
- 14:22Speaker 5: when you have a three and out or you make
- 14:24Speaker 5: a bad pass or something like that. Is there any
- 14:25Speaker 5: time or any coach on that staff that you're like, hey,
- 14:28Speaker 5: I just give me a second kind of vent and
- 14:30Speaker 5: talk a little bit.
- 14:32Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:32Speaker 6: I mean our quarterback coach, Rod Johnson, he's always right there.
- 14:36Speaker 6: Me's somebody that I've known since high school. I mean
- 14:39Speaker 6: he was my leader loving coach when I was in
- 14:41Speaker 6: high school.
- 14:41Speaker 3: I was like sixteen.
- 14:42Speaker 6: So for it to come full circle, is kind of crazy.
- 14:46Speaker 6: So he's always right there. I got Davis and case Keenum,
- 14:51Speaker 6: They're always right there to talk about a play or
- 14:54Speaker 6: to tell me, man, like you couldn't you can do
- 14:56Speaker 6: anything right there, like you got to just get rid
- 14:58Speaker 6: of it whatever, Like bad are good.
- 15:00Speaker 3: They always try to get be honest with me, which
- 15:02Speaker 3: I really appreciate.
- 15:03Speaker 6: And for me even bigger like off the field, I
- 15:06Speaker 6: have a lot of support, uh because sometimes man, you know,
- 15:09Speaker 6: y'all played this game at a high level, so you know,
- 15:12Speaker 6: when you get home, sometimes you don't want to talk
- 15:14Speaker 6: about ball.
- 15:15Speaker 3: You want to talk about anything else.
- 15:16Speaker 6: And so I have a good friend of mine who
- 15:18Speaker 6: helps me just talk about certain things that I need
- 15:20Speaker 6: to get off my chest and things like that. So
- 15:23Speaker 6: that's some advice for you guys out there who are
- 15:25Speaker 6: coming into this league man for next year, or if
- 15:28Speaker 6: you haven't done that yet, just have somebody that you
- 15:31Speaker 6: convent to, because this world will tell you how bad
- 15:34Speaker 6: you are and you'll start listening. And if you don't,
- 15:36Speaker 6: if you don't have something to kind of get out
- 15:40Speaker 6: of that way. So for me, I mean, those are
- 15:42Speaker 6: being some big pieces for me to be successful.
- 15:45Speaker 3: To this point.
- 15:45Speaker 5: You brought up a home before you do, before you
- 15:47Speaker 5: do that segment you brought up being back in Columbus
- 15:49Speaker 5: this past weekend obviously a big win against the Nitney Allons.
- 15:54Speaker 4: What is uh?
- 15:55Speaker 5: What's your expectation going into the third week of November
- 15:58Speaker 5: this year? What's your expectation for Ohio State this year?
- 16:06Speaker 3: A big expectations, man, just like every year. Man for us,
- 16:08Speaker 3: it's natty or nothing.
- 16:10Speaker 6: Man. I know you being a team up North guy,
- 16:14Speaker 6: you have your own opinion and I respect I respect it,
- 16:17Speaker 6: and yeah, I can't.
- 16:18Speaker 3: Talk too much. I didn't beat y'all.
- 16:20Speaker 6: So high respect for those guys over there. I don't
- 16:23Speaker 6: like y'all, but it's respect, and I think that team
- 16:26Speaker 6: over there. Talking to the DC Mike who's with the
- 16:31Speaker 6: Ravens now my first time actually talking to him and
- 16:34Speaker 6: since we played him in twenty twenty one, and he
- 16:37Speaker 6: had a lot of respect for me seeing a JOBU.
- 16:39Speaker 6: I got to see Hutchinson and it's all respect after
- 16:43Speaker 6: you after you're done playing in that game, because we
- 16:45Speaker 6: know how hard that game is if you've played in there.
- 16:47Speaker 3: So it's not from respect for me.
- 16:50Speaker 6: I'm still a little bitter, a little bitter from it,
- 16:53Speaker 6: just being honest. But this year, I hope we get
- 16:56Speaker 6: you guys and we get to go to the big
- 16:58Speaker 6: Championship and win Natty Man.
- 17:00Speaker 3: So that's to go for us every year. But that's
- 17:03Speaker 3: the big game every year.
- 17:04Speaker 6: So I'm excited to see what happens this year.
- 17:08Speaker 3: C J.
- 17:09Speaker 2: We got a segment presented by Dude Wives. It's the
- 17:12Speaker 2: It's there we go. Dry butttholes are a thing of
- 17:15Speaker 2: the past. It's all over with Dude Wives cleaning up
- 17:18Speaker 2: at the end of your shit. What has been your
- 17:20Speaker 2: shittiest moment of your rookie year so far?
- 17:25Speaker 6: M that's a that's a great that's a great, great
- 17:27Speaker 6: question for me. I've had a couple, you know, you
- 17:31Speaker 6: always get a couple, but I would say maybe that
- 17:34Speaker 6: my preseason game against the Patriots that first my first drive,
- 17:38Speaker 6: it was like third and twenty six and like me
- 17:40Speaker 6: being as hungry and aggressive eye, I'm like, man, I'm
- 17:42Speaker 6: gonna get the first down, and my got meals from
- 17:46Speaker 6: the Patriots out to him, great great player.
- 17:49Speaker 3: They were in like.
- 17:49Speaker 6: This one one plug look or really one lurk whether
- 17:52Speaker 6: the guy was robbing my eyes and he was guarding
- 17:56Speaker 6: our tight end and our tight end block, so he
- 17:57Speaker 6: freed up and I didn't notice, and he jump right
- 18:00Speaker 6: in front of it and picked it off. So that
- 18:02Speaker 6: was a good learning point for me. It's just thirty
- 18:04Speaker 6: twenty six. Sometimes you got to just lick your wounds
- 18:05Speaker 6: to take the check down. So that was good learning
- 18:10Speaker 6: for me. So that was probably one of the worst
- 18:12Speaker 6: moments I had. I'm trying to think of a funny
- 18:15Speaker 6: one that I've had, Like off the field.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Did did you get any rookie hazing anything with a veteran?
- 18:21Speaker 2: Not that it's like a shitty I'm pissed off moment,
- 18:23Speaker 2: but like, yeah, like you got got by one of
- 18:26Speaker 2: the boys.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I've gotten fined a lot for like for being on TV.
- 18:31Speaker 6: I don't know, likeways on TV get fine. Yeah, rookies
- 18:37Speaker 6: on TV. I guess as a no no. So I
- 18:39Speaker 6: got fined this weekend from being on game Day. I
- 18:42Speaker 6: get fine after every win that we get for being.
- 18:46Speaker 3: On on with the.
- 18:48Speaker 6: Reporter after the game, pulling them in on certain things.
- 18:50Speaker 6: So it's kind of funny to me, but a lot
- 18:53Speaker 6: of money right now.
- 18:55Speaker 2: If you if you show up on TV, what is
- 18:58Speaker 2: what's that fine?
- 19:00Speaker 3: Like five hundred's it's a thousand?
- 19:03Speaker 1: Oh my god, they see nothing but.
- 19:09Speaker 5: Jemmy mainstream media show. Watching this show right now. Stop
- 19:12Speaker 5: putting CJ. Stroud on the on the TV. Save my
- 19:14Speaker 5: man some money.
- 19:15Speaker 1: Yeah, he can come to our podcast.
- 19:18Speaker 5: Let's talk about Let's talk the spirit in the holiday
- 19:21Speaker 5: of Spooktober. If you don't know what Spootober it is,
- 19:23Speaker 5: it's funny a word for October, which is Halloween.
- 19:25Speaker 1: Dude.
- 19:25Speaker 5: The fall has hit, the leaves are falling, the weather
- 19:27Speaker 5: is breaking into a beautiful time, especially in Houston.
- 19:30Speaker 4: Where it's a little swampy down there.
- 19:32Speaker 5: Let's talk. Let's take it back to when you're a
- 19:33Speaker 5: little kid. We're going to do a thing, a segment
- 19:36Speaker 5: called Tier Talk, and it is going to be your
- 19:38Speaker 5: top three favorite Halloween candies. We like to start from
- 19:42Speaker 5: the bottom three and go up to one, and once
- 19:44Speaker 5: you finish, everybody on the bus will give a one
- 19:47Speaker 5: word answer describing how we feel about your picks.
- 19:49Speaker 1: Are you ready for that?
- 19:50Speaker 2: You want?
- 19:50Speaker 4: You want us to go first?
- 19:52Speaker 3: Us?
- 19:54Speaker 4: You want to go first?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Go ahead?
- 19:55Speaker 5: Okay, My Tier three is going to go to when
- 20:00Speaker 5: you're hungry, you're a little you're a little aggressive, you're
- 20:02Speaker 5: a little bit angry, and what do you pop in there.
- 20:05Speaker 5: You pop into Snickers I think as Snickers, and especially
- 20:07Speaker 5: the fun size. For whatever reason, it's a nice little snack.
- 20:10Speaker 5: You just pop it in your mouth real quick. It's
- 20:11Speaker 5: a it's a fun, delicious treat everybody can enjoy. My
- 20:18Speaker 5: Tier two is gonna go to uh uh sour Skittles,
- 20:23Speaker 5: preferably the little tiny bag. And I know the quantity
- 20:26Speaker 5: of them is only like six or seven. However, I
- 20:29Speaker 5: think if you have a bunch of those little sour Skittles,
- 20:32Speaker 5: you start doing the big a little quick. If you
- 20:34Speaker 5: want to say policy, you're more than welcome to again
- 20:36Speaker 5: on that. I think you have that, and then all
- 20:39Speaker 5: of a sudden it turns into a sweet little treat
- 20:40Speaker 5: as well, and down the gullet it goes. And my
- 20:42Speaker 5: Tier one, not sure why, it might be the branding
- 20:45Speaker 5: they've done since the nineties two thousands, they've done an
- 20:47Speaker 5: amazing job of it, is gonna go to uh the
- 20:50Speaker 5: Res's pieces. I'm not a chocolate guy. I'm more of
- 20:53Speaker 5: a gummy guy than I am a chocolate guy. But
- 20:55Speaker 5: the Res's always did a phenomenal job of taking the
- 20:59Speaker 5: bite out, making a spooky commercial and really making you
- 21:02Speaker 5: feel like the Reese's Peanut butter Cup is the staple
- 21:05Speaker 5: the franchise player of Halloween. I'm sorry Reese's Peanut butter Cup,
- 21:11Speaker 5: not Reese's PC. Reese's Peanut butter Cup. Thank you for okay.
- 21:14Speaker 5: That is a big clarification change. Yeah, that's a big change.
- 21:17Speaker 4: CJ.
- 21:18Speaker 5: Do you want to give one word to describe how
- 21:19Speaker 5: you feel about my picks?
- 21:22Speaker 3: I would say solid. That's solid.
- 21:24Speaker 4: It's a keyword in this bus.
- 21:26Speaker 1: Good. Oh good. I'll go with good. Mitch. What's your word?
- 21:31Speaker 5: Um veteran, I have been doing a long time, thirty
- 21:36Speaker 5: two years old, Willie. Let's hear what you got?
- 21:37Speaker 2: My Tier three and I don't think they get enough love.
- 21:41Speaker 2: I think it's uh could potentially been an unpopular opinion,
- 21:44Speaker 2: but I want to give them their flowers because I
- 21:46Speaker 2: enjoy a nice handful of candy corn. I'm a candy
- 21:50Speaker 2: corn guy. I love the candy corn. I love the shapes,
- 21:52Speaker 2: I love the colors. Like give me the candy corn.
- 21:54Speaker 2: I see that face, EJ. That's okay, my tier too.
- 21:59Speaker 2: Peanut m and MS. I love peanut eminems. And when
- 22:02Speaker 2: you get them in that little fun sized back against
- 22:04Speaker 2: like another, it's like another fistful no pause, peanut ms.
- 22:08Speaker 2: My Tier one is in the res the Reese's Family.
- 22:12Speaker 2: But it's a fast break, dude, getting fast breaks. They
- 22:16Speaker 2: are the fucking best. That's my top Halloween candy of
- 22:21Speaker 2: all time. It's the fast Break And that concludes my
- 22:23Speaker 2: tier talk c.
- 22:25Speaker 3: J yuck.
- 22:31Speaker 7: Average Okay, Mitch almost it's the candy corn for years,
- 22:37Speaker 7: are you guys?
- 22:38Speaker 1: The candy corn?
- 22:39Speaker 3: The fast breaking fast break might be the best candy
- 22:41Speaker 3: of all time.
- 22:42Speaker 4: Another fast you know what that is?
- 22:45Speaker 2: Yeah, fast break is well, yeah, you gotta get you one, brother, Okay,
- 22:49Speaker 2: all right, whenever you're ready, brother.
- 22:53Speaker 6: Okay, I'm just clarification. I'm not a big candy guy. Like,
- 22:57Speaker 6: I don't like candy. I really, I was a born kid,
- 23:00Speaker 6: it I guess.
- 23:01Speaker 3: Uh. But if you're a.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Protein bar guy, I hope he just names all protein bars. Yeah.
- 23:07Speaker 6: If I had to pick, I'm gonna go Jolly Ranchers,
- 23:12Speaker 6: Blue Raspberry and great those are my top two water
- 23:17Speaker 6: number two. I'm gonna go Starburst. Pink is my favorite,
- 23:20Speaker 6: pink and red. You can't go wrong with good Starbursts.
- 23:24Speaker 6: And then I was an angry kid. I was kidding,
- 23:26Speaker 6: but uh, I'm gonna go with Snickers to be my number.
- 23:30Speaker 4: One hyphenated not hyphenated rainbow.
- 23:41Speaker 7: I'll say, okay, Mitch, okay, yeah, sure, taking a shot
- 23:54Speaker 7: your own guy.
- 23:54Speaker 5: And Mitch is one of our producers. He's Ohio steak
- 23:58Speaker 5: guy as well.
- 23:59Speaker 1: All right, Mitch, Yeah, all right? Manwit Hey, CJ.
- 24:03Speaker 4: Strad the best quarterback in the Hot state history?
- 24:06Speaker 1: Do you have a question like you? Do you have
- 24:08Speaker 1: a question for CJ?
- 24:09Speaker 2: I know you are an Ohio State fan, but you
- 24:11Speaker 2: got something fired up for him.
- 24:13Speaker 8: I guess a question I would have for you it
- 24:15Speaker 8: would be stepping back to you Ohio State days. What
- 24:17Speaker 8: was it like being in that wide receiver room with
- 24:20Speaker 8: Gary Wilson Olive and Jake budd Well, Marvin Harrison like
- 24:26Speaker 8: all those guys.
- 24:32Speaker 6: Nah, of course, of man, it was a blessing, bro like,
- 24:34Speaker 6: not only did did they helped me a lot? I
- 24:37Speaker 6: feel like I helped them and we were kind of
- 24:40Speaker 6: like ying and yang, like we just worked together really well.
- 24:43Speaker 6: I had a natural connection in chemistry right when I
- 24:46Speaker 6: stepped on campus with them, and I definitely appreciate like
- 24:50Speaker 6: the grind that they taught me to put in to
- 24:52Speaker 6: be great in his game, especially Marv. Like Marv Man,
- 24:55Speaker 6: he's the epitome of just a workaholic.
- 24:58Speaker 1: Uh.
- 24:59Speaker 6: And then Garrett like he's just naturally just super great
- 25:03Speaker 6: at everything in basketball, baseball, table tennis, like you name it, Yeah, you.
- 25:09Speaker 3: Get him a ball, he's gonna he's gonna make it happen.
- 25:12Speaker 6: And Chris he's silk man, silky smooth, smooth the other
- 25:16Speaker 6: side of the pillow.
- 25:17Speaker 3: And he's just.
- 25:19Speaker 6: That type of swag that you just like you feel
- 25:21Speaker 6: comfort around because you know he's gonna make a play.
- 25:23Speaker 6: And then Jackson, Uh, he's just a dog like, he's
- 25:27Speaker 6: somebody who just loves football and he does. I've never
- 25:30Speaker 6: seen him get guard one on one like and get
- 25:32Speaker 6: locked up ever in my life. Like, I don't think
- 25:33Speaker 6: I've ever seen him not make a play up in
- 25:36Speaker 6: a game. And excited to see what he does in Seattle. So, man,
- 25:39Speaker 6: I missed him boys, And it was a blessing to
- 25:41Speaker 6: be in such a talented room. At the time, Man,
- 25:44Speaker 6: we were just young kids figuring it out and and
- 25:46Speaker 6: now we're all in the league now, so it's it's
- 25:48Speaker 6: pretty cool. And Marvin's Marvel's next. So excited to see
- 25:51Speaker 6: the future for everybody.
- 25:53Speaker 4: I don't know how many questions you have left to
- 25:54Speaker 4: have two questions.
- 25:56Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm solid man. Yeah, Marvin Harrison Jr. Let's say
- 26:02Speaker 5: you guys don't make the playoffs. Would you want if
- 26:06Speaker 5: if Marvin Harrison Jr. Is available when your team picks
- 26:10Speaker 5: next year, is that the number one guy you'd like
- 26:12Speaker 5: on your team out of everybody in the draft?
- 26:15Speaker 6: I'm playing GM Uh Yeah, man, of course I got
- 26:18Speaker 6: to say my guy Marv, and I wouldn't just even
- 26:21Speaker 6: if he was in my teammate. You turn on the film,
- 26:25Speaker 6: you hear the word of mouth of everybody on how
- 26:27Speaker 6: hard he works, what type of guy is, And I
- 26:31Speaker 6: know for him, like everybody always talks about his family
- 26:34Speaker 6: and like his pops, and he gets it from that.
- 26:37Speaker 6: If I'll be honest, I would say his dad set
- 26:39Speaker 6: the foundation and he let him go. And Marvin loves
- 26:43Speaker 6: this game for himself and for me, that kind of
- 26:47Speaker 6: that kind of opens the eyes, like, man, this dude's
- 26:49Speaker 6: gonna be great because you hear like stories from guys
- 26:52Speaker 6: from great players. Kids, they want to be great because
- 26:54Speaker 6: they want to be better than their dad or whatever
- 26:56Speaker 6: the kiss may be. Marv wants to be great because
- 26:57Speaker 6: he wants to be great. So man, if I had
- 26:59Speaker 6: to pick, I definitely pick Marvin for sure. He's a
- 27:01Speaker 6: top three pick. In my opinion, he should be the
- 27:04Speaker 6: first God drafted. But that's not for me to decide.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Yeah, I love that.
- 27:09Speaker 5: My last question is going to be about an AFC
- 27:13Speaker 5: seuth divisional opponent.
- 27:14Speaker 4: It's gonna be about the Tennessee Titans.
- 27:16Speaker 5: This week they're wearing the throwback oiler uniforms. Where is
- 27:20Speaker 5: your stance on who should be able to wear the Oilers' uniforms?
- 27:26Speaker 6: I would say it would have to be us. I mean,
- 27:28Speaker 6: I mean, we're we're Houston, so I don't really know
- 27:34Speaker 6: too much about the rivalry or too much about like
- 27:36Speaker 6: the color situation.
- 27:37Speaker 3: I know that we were they were here and.
- 27:41Speaker 6: Then moved to Tennessee and then Mischig ganaer Pick picked
- 27:44Speaker 6: up the team, So I would say, just like whoever
- 27:47Speaker 6: started in that home city. And I think those colors
- 27:50Speaker 6: are dope, Like baby lou is my favorite color. So
- 27:53Speaker 6: if you're listening to mister, let's go back to baby blue.
- 27:56Speaker 3: But nah, man, I.
- 27:57Speaker 6: Would say to us, but uh man thon today, man,
- 28:00Speaker 6: their colors like, let's play ball.
- 28:02Speaker 4: I love that and Letten.
- 28:03Speaker 5: I have a one hundred percent disagree with you, but
- 28:05Speaker 5: we can get into that at a different.
- 28:06Speaker 1: Time because we'd have them on the bus and the.
- 28:09Speaker 5: We'll have him the bus in the offseason. Dude, we
- 28:11Speaker 5: are I'm fired up for you. I really am. I
- 28:13Speaker 5: know I went to Michigan and all that, and I
- 28:14Speaker 5: have these dumb jokes about Ohio State quarterbacks being a bus.
- 28:17Speaker 5: You are really playing at a level that all of Houston, Texas,
- 28:21Speaker 5: all Houston Texans can be happy about and be proud
- 28:24Speaker 5: about know that their franchise is on the right on
- 28:26Speaker 5: the right path.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Man, happy for you.
- 28:28Speaker 2: Yeah, I appreciate that a lot. Man, Thank you, CJ.
- 28:30Speaker 2: Thanks for coming on man like legit. I'm a fan.
- 28:32Speaker 2: I'm a fan of yours. I'm gonna be room for
- 28:34Speaker 2: you the rest of the year. And I think the
- 28:36Speaker 2: story that you gave when you were a freshman in
- 28:38Speaker 2: college and you had a three hour conversation with your
- 28:41Speaker 2: running backs coach and where your mental was, I think
- 28:44Speaker 2: can relate to any good freshman player that is struggling
- 28:49Speaker 2: with wrapping their mind around, patience and waiting on their moment.
- 28:53Speaker 2: And I think that is incredible And I am I'm
- 28:56Speaker 2: a fan of yours, so I'm excited.
- 28:57Speaker 3: Thank you. Appreciate that.
- 28:58Speaker 6: Man A fan of y'all is man in the fami
- 29:00Speaker 6: of you off for a long time, so I appreciate
- 29:01Speaker 6: you all lot.
- 29:02Speaker 1: You'll be on here in the offseason, bro, I can't wait.
- 29:04Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't wait. All right, I'll be blessed.
