Transcript
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: If I were starting my podcast from scratch in 2026, I would ignore almost everything that the internet tells new podcasters to do.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: I would not spend a week comparing microphones, I would not agonize over cover art, I would not re-record my intro seven times because I didn't love the way that I said my own name.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And I know that because I've watched almost every launch client I've ever worked with try to do exactly those things first.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And I've had my own version of it too, back when I was first starting out.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: We all get hung up on the little stuff because the little stuff feels safe.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: It totally feels like progress.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: But here's the thing: the little stuff was never the thing standing between you and a podcast that actually works.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: So today I want to walk you through exactly what I would do differently.
- 1:25SPEAKER_00: Not theory, not someone else's launch checklist, but my actual restart plan, the one I use with clients right now in 2026.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: Let's get into it.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Podcasting for Moms, the show for moms in business ready to start, grow, and scale a podcast that turns our listeners into buyers.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: I'm Jenny Summerson, a podcast strategist and fellow mom entrepreneur.
- 1:48SPEAKER_00: You're in the right place if you want to learn how to start and grow a podcast that attracts your ideal clients and really does the heavy lifting for you when it comes to selling your offers, all while balancing life as a busy mom.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Are you ready to create a podcast that grows your income, impact, and influence?
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Let's make podcasting work for you.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Because as moms, we know how to get things done.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: All right, let's jump into the episode.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: Hey, hey, and welcome back to podcasting for moms.
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Is this your first time if this is your first time here, or you're still sitting on the or you're still sitting on the idea of starting a show, this episode's for you.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: And if you already have a podcast, stick around because I promised you because I promised you skipped at least one of these steps too.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: So let's dive in.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: So the first pillar is the origin story comes first, not the gear.
- 2:34SPEAKER_00: Not the gear.
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: And here's where most people start.
- 2:37SPEAKER_00: They open 15 browser tabs, they open 15 different browser tabs comparing microphones.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: They pick a podcast host based on a Pinterest graphic that they saw, and they spend three weeks deciding on a name.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: Here is where I would actually start.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: I would sit down and get honest about my why for starting a podcast.
- 2:53SPEAKER_00: Why the show, why now, and why me?
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: Because your first episode isn't a tech demo.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: It's a trust builder.
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And when I work with my launch clients, the very first thing that we do is build what I like to call the origin story episode.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: It's like 12 to 15 minutes where you share your why, your background, what listeners can expect going forward, and one simple ask like following the show or DMing you on Instagram.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: That's it.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: That is it.
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: No perfect audio, no fancy editing, just a real person telling a real story about why the show exists in the first place.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: The big picture goal here is connection, not perfection.
- 3:28SPEAKER_00: Then we have pillar two.
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: The mission message comes before the content calendar.
- 3:32SPEAKER_00: So the second thing people tend to obsess over is the content calendar.
- 3:36SPEAKER_00: They want 30 topics mapped out before they hit record once.
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: And I get the instinct.
- 3:40SPEAKER_00: It feels really responsible to do that.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: But if I were starting today, episode two wouldn't be a topic at all.
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: It would be my mission message.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Who is this podcast actually for?
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: And what do I believe that most people in my space don't say out loud?
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: This is the episode where you name the pain point that your listener is living in, call it an unpopular opinion or two, and tell them exactly what the show will and won't be about.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: It's not about proving you know a lot, it's about proving you know them specifically.
- 4:07SPEAKER_00: The big picture goal here is clarity on who it's for and why it matters before you worry about what to talk about, before you worry about what to talk next, before you worry about what to talk about next.
- 4:17SPEAKER_00: Then we have the third pillar.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: The quick win comes before the polish.
- 4:22SPEAKER_00: So people want episode three, four, and five to be masterpieces.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Overproduced, over-edited, trying to sound like a network show from day one.
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: If I were restarting, episode three would be a quick win.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: One simple actionable strategy that your listener can use today.
- 4:37SPEAKER_00: Something that gives them a result fast enough that they trust you with their time next week, too.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: And that's also where you start quietly seeding your offer or your framework, not with a hard pitch, just a natural next step.
- 4:48SPEAKER_00: This is the arc that I walk every single launch client through.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: Origin story, mission message, and quick wind.
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Who you are, who it's for, and how you help.
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: These this three-episode launch pad and your show already has a spine.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: So, so here's what I want you to take away from all of this.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Obsessing over the small details is not the same thing as building a real podcast strategy.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: That is not caution.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: That is a really good way to hide from the big picture question underneath all of it, which is what do you actually want this podcast to do for you and your business?
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: Let's be real, no one has ever unsubscribed from a show because the intro music faded out half a second too fast.
- 5:27SPEAKER_00: But people absolutely stop listening to shows that don't know who they're for or where they're going.
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: So if you're sitting on a launch date because you haven't picked the right microphone yet, hear me on this.
- 5:36SPEAKER_00: That's not readiness, that's just a detour.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: So if I were launching in 2026, so if I were launching a podcast in 2026, here's the whole plan in 30 seconds.
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: Episode one, tell them who you are.
- 5:49SPEAKER_00: Episode two, tell them who it's for.
- 5:51SPEAKER_00: Episode three, give them a fast win and start pointing towards how you help.
- 5:56SPEAKER_00: That's the three-episode launch pad, and it works because it puts trust before content and content before polish.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: Here's the thing though, knowing the framework and actually building the full launch, the tech, the sequencing, the content plan around it, those are two different problems.
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: And that's exactly why I built the podcast launch playbook.
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: This is a full limited series where I walk you through the entire launch process step by step, starting with a quick ready starting with a quick readiness scorecard so that you know exactly where you're starting from.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: So if you've been circling a launch date for months because you weren't sure what actually mattered, this starts with that scorecard.
- 6:33SPEAKER_00: You can find the podcast launch playbook on your favorite podcast app.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: Or you can head to podcastingformoms.co slash pl.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: Once again, that's podcastingformoms.co slash pl.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: If you go to that URL, you'll be able to subscribe to the show on your preferred app and grab the readiness scorecard and everything you need.
- 6:56SPEAKER_00: And I've also made sure that it's linked in the show notes for you as well if you're driving or doing something where you can't type that into your browser right now.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: So once again, podcasting for moms.co slash PLP, or you can find it in the show notes.
