- 0:39SPEAKER_02: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast, powered by the Nation, part of the Nation Podcast Network.
- 0:44SPEAKER_02: I am your host, Steven Rodriguez, my co-host Tristan McGonagall is here.
- 0:48SPEAKER_02: Tristan, uh pretty uneventful week uh for Texas Tech.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Um it has only just been a week, right?
- 0:57SPEAKER_02: Since we've dropped it.
- 0:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: We've been very we haven't good legitimate excuses for this past one.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:06SPEAKER_02: We've had we were lazy in the past, but you know, I got married, some other stuff happened.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: It's okay.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: We're good.
- 1:14SPEAKER_02: Talking tech podcast is back.
- 1:15SPEAKER_01: It's is it back?
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Are we back onto regular scheduled programming?
- 1:19SPEAKER_02: We are back.
- 1:20SPEAKER_01: All right, okay, let's go.
- 1:22SPEAKER_01: All right, so yes, very uneventful week, I would say, in the uh LBK.
- 1:27SPEAKER_01: Not a lot happens, so we're just gonna have a very slow episode about baseball.
- 1:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: But I guess we should get it uh, you know, the stuff that really doesn't matter out the way.
- 1:37SPEAKER_02: Um okay, yes, big stuff has happened, of course.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Um, if you've been paying attention to Texas Tech Sports, we no longer have a basketball coach.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: Um, Texas Tech and Mark Adams have parted ways um after a series of events uh we have not been speaking about on the podcast because we haven't had an episode since I think after we beat UT.
- 2:05SPEAKER_02: So uh so if you we'll just run down the timeline, okay?
- 2:11SPEAKER_02: We lose three straight games to end the regular season.
- 2:14SPEAKER_02: Um after the final loss of the regular season, Oklahoma State, uh, it was announced that Mark Adams was suspended by Kirby Hokutt for uh making an inappropriate, unacceptable, and racially insensitive comment that he made to a player.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: Um, obviously uh a big surprise, I think, to a lot of Texas Tech fans.
- 2:38SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, there obviously there's been rumors spreading around about Mark Adams throughout the whole year, but nobody really expected him to get suspended for a racially insensitive comment uh made to a player.
- 2:51SPEAKER_02: And ultimately, what came out of that is uh uh they have decided to part ways.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: Um, Tristan, what what do you what did you think about the whole thing?
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: It was hard to believe.
- 3:02SPEAKER_01: It was hard to believe, man.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: It's like it's been such a whirlwind of a hire, you know.
- 3:06SPEAKER_01: It was like a very emotional hire, you know, where on it seemed like everybody was behind him and he was like our hero to save us.
- 3:13SPEAKER_01: And then this year just it would have been had had things had this not happened, we just would probably been able to say it was just a sour year, the honeymoon phase is over, we need to see results next next go around.
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: But it's really turned into a whole dumpster fire, man, with all the uh the uh off-court stuff, and that's just what's really frustrating as a fan to see like a a coach blow it not only on the court but off the court as well.
- 3:36SPEAKER_01: Well, like he's just he's just doing uh doing L's all around.
- 3:40SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's it's really frustrating because you just you would never expect this from a man that spent uh practically his whole professional, I mean a very long professional career in coaching.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: How do you how you how are you not like privy to know what's across the line and what's in bounds whenever you're talking to your players?
- 3:59SPEAKER_01: You've had years and years of this, you know, uh conversation after conversation with your players, and you finally you know do this.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: It's just it's it's pretty confusing for a guy that seems so experienced.
- 4:10SPEAKER_01: It's probably my logical brain talking there.
- 4:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the whole thing was so confusing, even if you just look at the first year of how everything went.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: It was great.
- 4:19SPEAKER_02: It was, you know, sweet 16 appearance.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: Uh players loved him.
- 4:23SPEAKER_02: The players loved him.
- 4:24SPEAKER_02: There was no turmoil in the program.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Now, I guess there could have been a little bit of turmoil if it, but it was just pushed down because we were winning.
- 4:32SPEAKER_02: That's another part of this whole thing that I can't stand.
- 4:35SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, I don't know if we've seen a quicker, more unexpected fall from Grace as a Texas Tech head coach.
- 4:45SPEAKER_02: I I don't know if we could even probably compare this to Mike Leach, uh, from one year you're winning, you know, 10-11 games to the next year you're fired for uh allegedly putting a kid in the shed and you know that whole debacle.
- 5:00SPEAKER_01: So he rests in peace.
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, maybe yeah, absolutely.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: But I I just don't, it was so unexpected this whole entire year, and it got to a point where there was so many people saying so many things about this guy that it didn't even make it worth keeping him on, yeah.
- 5:22SPEAKER_02: Um, after the suspension, and it would have ultimately it would have affected recruiting, it would have affected a whole lot of different things.
- 5:28SPEAKER_02: There were reports that players were threatening to leave if he was brought back.
- 5:32SPEAKER_02: So clearly uh he lost the locker room.
- 5:36SPEAKER_02: Uh clearly he was not fit to coach this team this year.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: Um I think it it would be naive to not take the 2022 team and look at all those experienced players and guys that have been in college basketball, and then take this team that was very young with a bunch of true freshmen and say that you know it was it was easier or just as easy to coach this team versus last year's team.
- 6:04SPEAKER_02: Um, so you know, there's just so many different factors that took place during this whole thing, and it really ultimately it was just tiring, it was just super tiring.
- 6:16SPEAKER_02: I was uh I was upset, but also it was just like let's just get this over with.
- 6:21SPEAKER_02: I'm tired of being in the news for bad juju with coaches.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:26SPEAKER_02: Um, and so uh, you know, I guess ultimately I'm I'm glad that they decided to part ways because I just don't think there was gonna be any recouping of the locker room or anything like that.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: Once once the story broke, I think we all knew that like he's gone.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: Like there's if you get suspended for something like that, there's no there's no coming back because there's just so much damage control that you'd have to do, and you'd have to sit there and ask yourself, is this worth it as an athletic department to try to to try to do a uh you know uh uh a rehab campaign for him?
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: Um, it just didn't seem worth it.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: And I think it's as sucky as this is gonna sound as well, the record made it pretty easy for the 80 to uh help push him out the door as well.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just you you kind of have another reason to uh you know evaluate your situation and to move forward.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: And I think I think Kirby made the right decision.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm sure uh the boosters were uh in a line with him as well about uh you know moving on from here.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: And uh it's just it's a little heartbreaking, you know.
- 7:25SPEAKER_01: It's just it just sucks because we all loved him so much.
- 7:28SPEAKER_01: And I think I guess it's just sad to think that we were hoodwinked, you know, where maybe you know the the wool was pulled over our head or anything like that.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Um, I just what had what what what happened between his first year and his second year that just like led to this bit of a mental breakdown?
- 7:42SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying like he's you know psychotic or anything like that, but like he we we clearly had a different coach this year, and I don't think any of us can understand why, you know.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's just it's just uh befuddling.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and the hard the hard part about all this is we're not, I don't think we're gonna get a lot of answers to why this all happened.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: Now, I don't know if we get something years down the road that kind of explains it a little more, but uh I I don't imagine Mark Adams is gonna be talking about this.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: No, I think he's gonna write off with his four million dollar settlement and uh ride off into the sunset.
- 8:13SPEAKER_02: I don't see, I don't think he's gonna coach anymore.
- 8:15SPEAKER_02: I think he's just gonna kind of do what he needs to do.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: And um, you know, that's frustrating just because we don't know the whole story.
- 8:24SPEAKER_02: And uh that was another part of this whole thing, you know, when this suspension happened, everybody's so quick to make a strong opinion on on the guy.
- 8:35SPEAKER_02: And I don't like listen, I think it we don't we don't have to say this.
- 8:40SPEAKER_02: Uh we don't, you know, condone racially insensitive comments or any sort of nature for that uh that may or may not have taken place, but uh it's just like you mentioned earlier, you can't have the season that you just had and also have this kind of suspension or these allegations, you know, to you and keep your job.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: It's just not gonna happen.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: So um that's uh winning and losing.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: I I put it on Twitter, winning and losing shouldn't define the character of a person, but it kind of does in college sports, and that's unfortunate.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's you're you're absolutely on point there, man.
- 9:21SPEAKER_01: Um, I I think we'll probably find out more about what went down.
- 9:25SPEAKER_01: I'm sure eventually players will start talking about a little more openly about what happens, you know, on a podcast or an article or something like that.
- 9:31SPEAKER_01: Hopefully, you know, it's not just full-blown scorched earth or anything like that, just you know, a more separated bird's eye view of the situation that we'll probably get um down the line in a few months or a couple of years or so.
- 9:43SPEAKER_01: Um, but at the same time, um, it's it's it's nice.
- 9:48SPEAKER_01: I you you kind of said this before we started recording that you're like you just want some some some stability in the basketball program.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: And because it's been a lot lately.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: It's we we gone through three coaches pretty quickly here.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: Um, and that's gonna cause a lot like a lack of building up.
- 10:04SPEAKER_01: You know, we were we were on top of the mountain, now it just kind of feels like we're tumbling down a bit um because we just can't seem to get our feet right.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think now you can look at this as an opportunity to go get somebody that you can ride with for a long time.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Um, because I think right now, I think techstech's a good job in college basketball.
- 10:22SPEAKER_01: I think we're a lot better than a lot of jobs out there that are opening right now.
- 10:26SPEAKER_01: So I think you have the opportunity to go get a really great candidate.
- 10:29SPEAKER_01: Like we pay really well and we have phenomenal facilities and an awesome atmosphere that you can sell on a guy.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: And I think now you can maybe go.
- 10:36SPEAKER_01: I don't want to just kind of knock on Mark Adams here, but you can kind of go get someone that's younger, that's gonna be in the game a little longer.
- 10:42SPEAKER_01: You know, we we weren't expecting Mark to be around for more than 10 years, you know.
- 10:45SPEAKER_01: He'll he's an old dude.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: So now you can go and look at somebody that maybe build your flagship around, you know, like this is oh, that's a blanky, that's a blank uh TechSteck basketball program we all come to expect after all these years, kind of thing.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: So um, because you kind of start building that legend, and I think you have the opportunity to start doing that.
- 11:02SPEAKER_02: I'll do you one better.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech is one of the best jobs in the country.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: Um, let's go.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: It's not, it's it's and I I you know you could say I'm biased or whatever, but you have some of the best facilities in the nation.
- 11:14SPEAKER_02: That's uh that's unmatched, the Womble Center and all the uh the the backing from the boosters, the backing from the athletic department.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: Uh, you don't get that at a lot of schools, uh, especially for basketball that is not necessarily the biggest revenue-making sport, you know, like it's uh it's number two to football, but I I you know, some most basketball programs don't ultimately make revenue for their school.
- 11:36SPEAKER_02: So um you have that, you have uh you just you have the location.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: Honestly, a lot of people crap on West Texas, but it's in Texas, and Texas is one of the biggest basketball-producing recruiting states of uh probably the best at this point in time, really.
- 11:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so absolutely the DFW area has skyrocketed in basketball recruiting.
- 12:01SPEAKER_02: Um, so Houston, yeah, in Houston and everything like that.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: So uh there's uh there shouldn't be any any conversation about is Texas Tech a good job.
- 12:12SPEAKER_02: Texas Tech is a great job, yeah, and a lot of people would love to have this position.
- 12:17SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, it's it's gonna be it's it's really finding the right fit.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: And with the last few hires, uh well, not I wouldn't say that, with a lot of the hires that Kirby Hokkut has made, um they haven't ended up great.
- 12:39SPEAKER_02: So I I think I think another part of this is that people are down on Kirby, which I think he very much deserves the criticism he's receiving for this, because you have yet another coaching scandal um that has taken place uh in the Texas Tech Athletic program that we did for ridiculous reasons, you know.
- 13:00SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the fourth one under Kirby Hokut, and the fourth one since like 2018, or whenever I think the first one was Stalings with the women's basketball program, and I think that was 2017 or 2018.
- 13:12SPEAKER_02: So, you know, this is getting ridiculous at this point, and and Hokut needs to be kind of uh you know put at the helm here.
- 13:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean that's that's his job, though.
- 13:21SPEAKER_01: He's he's the he's the representation of the athletic department.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: So whenever things reflect badly on our athletic department like these scandals, it's gonna reflect poorly on him.
- 13:29SPEAKER_01: And he's it's his job to quell the flames and extinguish them.
- 13:32SPEAKER_01: But I mean, obviously, he's the guy putting these people into place.
- 13:35SPEAKER_01: Um, you're I I don't know.
- 13:37SPEAKER_01: I I'm not I don't know the process of vetting someone's character like that.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know what goes into that.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: Um, I'm sure there's there's certain questions you could be asking them, but ultimately, you know, how much power do you have, how much control do you have over something like this happening uh under your watch?
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: It's it's kind of hard to say, like it's because you know anybody can say something stupid at any time, you know, in a in a in a moment of lack of clarity.
- 14:01SPEAKER_01: Um I mean he's but he's he's legitimately he's he's one of the highest paid ADs in the country.
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: And you know, we we've he's done a really great job, you know, uh g gaining booster support, and that's probably been the most important thing.
- 14:12SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's he can't be immune to people looking at him and going, what's going on here, man?
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: Like what's yeah, how can we avoid this in the future?
- 14:20SPEAKER_01: And I I like to think that this new coaching committee that they put together is a step in that in that direction.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they did that.
- 14:29SPEAKER_02: Well, they did the coaching committee for Adams.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: Uh, they also did the coaching committee for Joey McGuire as well.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Um, this this four-person coaching committee of Kirby Hoka, Dusty Womble, um, Norrence Odiase, and Joey McGuire.
- 14:45SPEAKER_02: Two wild cards.
- 14:46SPEAKER_02: Two real wilds.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: I mean, you know, I I I think it's awesome that they're getting former players in and really ambassadors for the program.
- 14:55SPEAKER_02: Norrence, if anything, is an ambassador for the program.
- 14:57SPEAKER_02: For sure.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: Um, and Joey Maguire, who is here for the long run, and I think everybody believes that at this point.
- 15:04SPEAKER_02: And so putting him on a coaching committee for a sport that he ultimately knows not much about, you know, he's a football coach, not a basketball coach, but it's great.
- 15:14SPEAKER_02: I uh because it's character-driven.
- 15:17SPEAKER_02: Joey Maguire is as good of a person, I think, as you can get.
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: What's hope?
- 15:21SPEAKER_02: Please, God, Joey.
- 15:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I mean that's the bad part about all this, is it's making me like jaded, not not, yeah.
- 15:28SPEAKER_02: It's jade, it's it's making me not want to like fully invest in people, and that sucks because I fully invested in Adams.
- 15:36SPEAKER_02: I was a huge both you and me were huge Adams guys after last season, and yeah, we were huge beard guys, and then all of a sudden, there it goes.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: In one season, things go haywire, and all of a sudden it's done.
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: And so I don't know if that's just us being naive or what, but it's like you just want to believe in somebody, and stuff like this is what makes you kind of hold back and be more reserved with that type of stuff.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that that's what really sucks.
- 16:04SPEAKER_01: I mean, a lot of people are probably gonna listen to that and say, Well, man, you gotta remember that's it's it's a business at the end of the day, you know, it's it's not you can't be too glued to these people because it's it's ultimately a job, you know.
- 16:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a job that they make a lot of money to exactly right.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: And but my my response to that is I'm because I'm on your side.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Um, my response to that is like sports transcend that, you know, sports, they're a cultural outlet, uh, outlet.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: So they're not they're not just selling you a product, they're they're they're selling you a lifestyle, you know, they're selling you a uh uh a community.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: So whenever a leader in these communities does something like this, yeah, it kind of it kind of hurts your heart.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: You know, it hurts you emotionally.
- 16:42SPEAKER_01: I'm not I'm not sitting here like I'm I'm crying myself to sleep at night over this.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying, like, you know, you you you you attach yourself to these to these programs, to these players and to these coaches um emotionally.
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: And to have them, you know, um turn out like this, it's a little heartbreaking.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: And I don't I think that's a very valid thing to feel whenever it comes to something like sports.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Because it's like like I said, it's ultimately this is my connection to my university, you know, and this is in uh this is uh this hurts that you know this this looks bad for my school, it looks bad for the community.
- 17:11SPEAKER_01: So because that's at the end of the day, they're they're also community ambassadors.
- 17:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's uh it's unacceptable to have consistent losing programs at a school like Texas Tech that has all the resources you could ever want.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, there's always a little, a few richer programs, but there's really not a lot.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: Like Texas Tech has it made really good, and it's pretty unacceptable to have losing programs, but it's even more unacceptable to hire terrible people to lead those programs.
- 17:40SPEAKER_02: And so when stuff happens like this consistently, you really get jaded, like you said.
- 17:46SPEAKER_02: So um, I just hope that the next guy is good.
- 17:49SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about some candidates coming up.
- 17:51SPEAKER_02: Um, like I mentioned earlier, four million dollar settlement.
- 17:56SPEAKER_02: That was kind of, you know, it's always iffy when you hear the initial reports of when a coach is either fired, parted ways, uh, resigns, or whatever.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: You start thinking, okay, what's the financial kind of uh you know story here?
- 18:10SPEAKER_02: Because initially you heard uh Texas Tech and Mark Adams have parted ways, and then you also heard Mark Adams has stepped down and you and so all that stuff, the verbiage matters because that determines you know how much money you're gonna ultimately pay the guy, or if there was some agreement that came into play, and that's what ultimately happened.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: They came to an agreement of four million dollars for the settlement.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: If we fired Mark Adams without cause, he would have been owed the the rest of his contract, which was about seven and a half million dollars.
- 18:46SPEAKER_02: So clearly they wanted to meet somewhere in the middle here.
- 18:49SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm okay with it.
- 18:50SPEAKER_02: I'm I hate that we're paying a guy four million dollars to leave.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Right, it's never fun when you have to buy out a contract, but it's I I think it was necessary for the state of the program and to ultimately move on from this very, very horrible season.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely, dude.
- 19:07SPEAKER_01: Um, I I I before we move to the coach again, it's just kind of some final thoughts on Mark Adams.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: I think I'm going to appreciate the time we had with him.
- 19:15SPEAKER_01: Like the year one, Mark Adams was such a fun ride, and it was just it's so emotional.
- 19:21SPEAKER_01: And those basketball seasons are going to be the ones that we're going to remember the rest of our lives.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: And it's just um it's just sad that he had to go out like this.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: You know, we we always thought that he'd be kind of riding off the sunset in retirement at the end of this, and it's just it's crazy to see just the book closed, shut, closed here in the intro.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: So it's yeah, it just sucks.
- 19:40SPEAKER_01: That was poetic, right?
- 19:41SPEAKER_02: It's yeah, it's just uh it's it's kind of how it's perspective, right?
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: It's you're gonna look at these seasons as like I I don't know about you, but I go back pretty consistently and go watch some of that 2019 run, you know, just just great Texas Tech games, and yeah, it's gonna kind of stink when you see the the camera pan over and you see the coach who was there, and then you automatically think how it ended, but it's also that team was different, you know.
- 20:10SPEAKER_02: Like 2022, you can look at Bryson Williams, you can look at Adonis Arms, you can look at O'Banner and be like, those are that was a great team, that was an awesome group.
- 20:18SPEAKER_02: I I you know led to some really fun times.
- 20:21SPEAKER_02: You'll look back at that game, yeah.
- 20:23SPEAKER_02: Sweet 16, you'll look back at the game in Austin and in Lubbock when Beard returned, and you you know, it takes you back to those moments.
- 20:29SPEAKER_02: So it's about how you look at it.
- 20:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: Um, I do the same thing with Beard Coach teams that I'm like, man, Jared Culver was awesome, or Matt Moody was awesome, you know.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Like, so I that I think ultimately it's gonna kind of stink seeing these guys on the sidelines and those, but uh, it's really you just look at it from whatever perspective that makes you feel good, right?
- 20:51SPEAKER_01: Hey, the foundations are there, man.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: We already talked about how great of a job this is.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: So uh let's go ahead and start talking about the future because that's that's happy stuff, that's bright side stuff that gets you thinking of uh possibilities and potentials.
- 21:04SPEAKER_01: So let's dig into it, man.
- 21:05SPEAKER_01: What who who's popping up on you first here?
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, let's before before we get into candidates, real quick.
- 21:12SPEAKER_02: I just want to mention this team by itself, the guys that we currently have on the roster that have not entered the transfer portal yet.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: That's you got some pieces here.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I know I know you only won five games in the Big 12, but you have some really, really young and awesome pieces on this team that have currently not entered the transfer portal.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: Monday is technically when you can enter the transfer portal, which is the day that you're gonna be listening to this episode.
- 21:40SPEAKER_02: So, I mean, stuff may change from the time that we're recording this to tomorrow, but yeah.
- 21:46SPEAKER_02: Um I you you have some really key pieces that you're going to have to re recruit, but they're there.
- 21:54SPEAKER_02: And so I just wanted to mention that before we talk about candidates.
- 21:57SPEAKER_02: Um let's get I don't I don't know I don't know where to start here because there's been reports of candidates.
- 22:05SPEAKER_02: There's also some like kind of long shot guys that we would like to have.
- 22:10SPEAKER_02: There's also some uh lower level coaches that are potentially looking to take that next step up.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: So I I just want to talk about this first one to get it out of the way.
- 22:19SPEAKER_02: I don't think it's gonna happen, but it was reported that there was interest between Texas Tech and Rick Patino.
- 22:27SPEAKER_02: Okay, yeah.
- 22:28SPEAKER_02: Let's start with there.
- 22:29SPEAKER_02: Let's start, let's let's just say F and start with Rick Patino and get him out of the way, hopefully, because uh the man is 71.
- 22:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, he has won multiple national championships, one of which was redacted from history uh in 2013 uh again with Louisville.
- 22:49SPEAKER_02: Um, but it was reported by John Rosteen, who is a notable college basketball analyst, uh, that Texas Tech has serious interest in potentially bringing on Rick Patino.
- 23:00SPEAKER_02: Um, why do I think this is not gonna happen?
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: Because uh one, Rick Petino is 71 years old.
- 23:09SPEAKER_02: Uh two, why he's a northeast guy.
- 23:13SPEAKER_02: There are multiple jobs that are open currently for Northeast, big East kind of jobs.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: He coached in Kentucky, though, bro.
- 23:21SPEAKER_02: I it's true, but he he's listening this guy's had probably the weirdest career I think I've ever seen from a college basketball coach.
- 23:29SPEAKER_02: Um, started out at Hawaii, he goes to the NBA multiple times throughout his career, wins national championships with Kentucky and with Louisville, and and you know, coaches at Providence and is is really ultimately a Northeast guy.
- 23:44SPEAKER_02: Goes over after the scandal and firing at Louisville, goes over to Greece, coaches a Greek team for two years, comes back to college basketball to coach Iona, and that's where he's at.
- 23:56SPEAKER_02: This little mid-major program Iona, and he's got them in a great position.
- 24:00SPEAKER_01: But um, this is not the most interesting coach of the world kind of thing going on.
- 24:05SPEAKER_02: It might be.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: It might be.
- 24:06SPEAKER_02: Uh, he's definitely kind of a weird guy, too.
- 24:09SPEAKER_02: Um, so he's listening he's gonna take the St.
- 24:13SPEAKER_02: John's job.
- 24:14SPEAKER_02: That's what's gonna happen.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: This was rumored for almost the entire year that if St.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: John's were to get rid of Mike Anderson, which they just did, that Rick Patino is going to be the number one choice over there.
- 24:26SPEAKER_02: Um, New York, it's I and what I think is happening here, and I think a lot of people think this John Rosteen gets information from Rick Petino's camp that says, Hey, this Texas Tech thing is is you know heating up here.
- 24:42SPEAKER_02: They're they're a real serious candidate.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: And that's so St.
- 24:45SPEAKER_02: John's will give him more money in the offer.
- 24:48SPEAKER_02: That's ultimately he's trying to leverage a little more money out of St.
- 24:50SPEAKER_02: John's in this news report.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: Um, and that's ultimately what I think this is.
- 24:55SPEAKER_02: So I don't think this Rick Petino thing is gonna come to life.
- 24:58SPEAKER_02: If it does, I will eat crow.
- 25:00SPEAKER_01: Well, would you how would you eat it?
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Uh roasted.
- 25:05SPEAKER_02: I would cook it.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: I imagine I would cook it.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: You are Louisiana.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: I feel like the crow eating per capita is much higher there than any other state.
- 25:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you're absolutely right.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: Um, I think he's just kind of bolt boosting his his uh value for the incoming job for the the real job he's going to take.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but think about it for a second.
- 25:26SPEAKER_01: Would you be excited if we hired Rick Patino?
- 25:30SPEAKER_02: I yes, I would talk myself into it.
- 25:32SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 25:33SPEAKER_03: 100%.
- 25:36SPEAKER_02: But I I would talk myself into a lot of these guys.
- 25:39SPEAKER_02: I think I am going to talk myself into whoever we hire for this next basketball coach.
- 25:44SPEAKER_02: But as of right now, where there is no sitting basketball coach, I can now judge these.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: But no, yes, I a two-time national champion, a guy that has improved every single place that he's gone, including uh Greece and uh Iona, who is now gonna be in the NCAA tournament for like the third straight year under him.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: So I you know, I yes, and he's one of the he is one of the best college basketball coaches of all time.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: Like, that's not a question.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: Yeah he has had some scandals, but those scandals are paying for players, yeah.
- 26:21SPEAKER_01: Legal now.
- 26:22SPEAKER_02: That's which is legal now.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: So you know, when some people are saying we need to get uh we can't, you know, spend money on a guy who has baggage, it's like it's like guys, NIL's a thing now.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: These guys were all punished pre-NIL for NIL purposes.
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: So uh it, you know, I I hate you know the the uh the baggage that these guys have, quote unquote.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: I I would like to hire a guy who doesn't have any of that.
- 26:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but if it ultimately happens, yes, of course I'm gonna talk myself into it.
- 26:55SPEAKER_01: It would be pretty wild having Rick Bettino in Lubbock, Texas, Texas Tech University.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: Um you'd be smashing some Orlando's man.
- 27:05SPEAKER_01: Um all right, so you know the last old legend that we hired that was close to retirement age was pretty dang good.
- 27:14SPEAKER_01: It worked out pretty well.
- 27:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're right, you're right.
- 27:17SPEAKER_02: Tubby Smith was great.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: Bob Knight ended up being great.
- 27:20SPEAKER_02: So I don't know, maybe we get another guy here.
- 27:23SPEAKER_02: That old old legend, old national champion level coach that comes back to Lovick and changes the program back around.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: Who's to say?
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: Who's to say?
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Who's to say?
- 27:34SPEAKER_02: Let's let's move on from Rick Metino.
- 27:36SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm disappointed in myself that that was the first coach that I brought up in this.
- 27:40SPEAKER_02: Uh Grant Grant McCastland is the guy that everybody is hearing about.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Um, if you read any article pertaining to Texas Tech's head coaching position, uh Grant McCastland is probably the first guy that's brought up.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: He's the North Texas head coach.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: Um, they had a great year, they've had a great last several years under McCastland.
- 28:01SPEAKER_02: Um they so he was actually a candidate after Beard left.
- 28:07SPEAKER_02: Um, I I remember he was being rumored uh to interview.
- 28:11SPEAKER_02: I don't know if he ultimately did interview for that position.
- 28:14SPEAKER_02: I don't know if uh really anybody besides Darwin Hamm and Mark Adams were interviewed for that job, but uh McCassland is a Texas guy, first and foremost.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Um, he runs a very slow-paced, defensive-minded uh brand of basketball that we are actually pretty used to here at Texas Tech.
- 28:34SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, 26 and 7 record this year, 16-4 in conference.
- 28:39SPEAKER_02: He has elevated that North Texas program like crazy.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: Um, and I I you know I I think it would be a great hire.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: I think I'd love to have him.
- 28:50SPEAKER_02: Um clearly, everybody, every college basketball media personality uh thinks that McCasland is one of the top front runners for the job.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, it's almost for me, it's almost there's too many people saying it for me to believe it.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: You know, it's too obvious.
- 29:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: Um, I I and another thing that you uh uh to bring up is yeah, yeah, he's a Scott Drew guy, you know, and Scott Drew obviously has a great record um at Baylor.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: He's done a few things there, and he seems like a really upstanding guy as well.
- 29:23SPEAKER_01: So they kind of like really would wash away any idea that there's perhaps baggage there to to be had.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: Um he whatever, all things considered, it looks like Grant McCastles just looks like your your nice family man.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Um it just seems like this is just seems like a great plug and go.
- 29:36SPEAKER_01: Like just just picking him up from North Texas and throwing him over in West Texas, just seems like it'd be a really good fit.
- 29:42SPEAKER_01: I bet if I'm a betting man, I would bet that he's our next basketball coach.
- 29:46SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 29:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, he's definitely has the best odds.
- 29:49SPEAKER_02: Um, I I would agree with that 100%, and I'd 100% be behind it with McCasslin.
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: The only thing that I would question necessarily is potentially recruiting.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: Uh, but he is a Texas guy, he's got connections in the area.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: It's just, you know, he's not necessarily thought of as you know one of the ace recruiters in college basketball, which uh, you know, I think when you're at Texas Tech and the the level of job that this is, um, you know, you kind of want that.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: And you you and so that would be my only like qualm with uh with Grant McCasslin, but I I think ultimately I'd be thrilled if he's the next coach.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: Agreed, man.
- 30:28SPEAKER_01: Who else you got?
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: Um, another, let's keep with the Scott Drew train.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: Uh Paul Mills, uh, who is currently the head coach at Oral Roberts, uh, who has had a fantastic year.
- 30:39SPEAKER_02: Uh, 30 and four.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: Uh again, they're in the summit league, but they are in the NCA tournament.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: Um, this is uh another Scott Drew guy uh who's uh got Texas ties to him.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: Um that's really ultimately what I know about him is that he has coached a uh an Oral Roberts program to be really successful the last few years.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: Um, I believe he coached Kevin O'Banner when he was there.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: Um, he's obviously he's had the credit of having um Max Aismus, who has been one of the most dynamic players in college basketball the last few years on his on his Oral Roberts teams.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: But uh he's a winner, man.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: And I I don't know what the jump from Oral Roberts to Texas Tech would be like.
- 31:26SPEAKER_01: Um but that's a bigger jump than UNZ.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah, definitely.
- 31:31SPEAKER_02: Because Conference USA, like yeah, I think I think ultimately conference USA to Texas Tech would be less of a leap than the summit league to Texas Tech.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Um but you know who's to say with that when it it's very minuscule when you're taking both of those and talking about the next step up.
- 31:50SPEAKER_02: Um, but another plus I think of getting Paul Mills, and this is a minor plus for a one-year type deal.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: I I think you have a good chance of potentially getting Max A.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: Smiths to go to your program if you hire him.
- 32:05SPEAKER_02: Uh, this is a guy who has stayed at Oral Roberts for four years now and could have easily transferred to a higher level program the last few years, especially after that NCA tournament run when he had O'Banner and everything like that.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: He could have easily gone to a different program and been successful.
- 32:23SPEAKER_02: But he does have one year of eligibility remaining.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: I know that's hard to believe because it seems like he's been in college basketball for a long time.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: But I think if you bring in Paul Mills, I think you have a good chance that Max Aism probably follows.
- 32:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah, then that's that's a fun thought as well.
- 32:38SPEAKER_01: Um, just really I I would not be surprised to see if you see us go for uh a Scott Drew guy.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: Uh it just kind of seems like that's gonna be that would be a good formula to plug into Lubbock if it's since it's working so well in Waco.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: Um, you know, fairly similar communities and stuff, and then uh same league.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: So he knows how to win in the Big 12.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: And I want some of that, you know, I want some of that over here.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: Um, also another uh I I'm actually kind of pulling this straight from a uh an article.
- 33:03SPEAKER_01: Um, with how with how successful Tang has been.
- 33:06SPEAKER_01: Um this there's even talk of maybe just pulling one of the current Baylor assistant head coaches right now, like John Jenkins.
- 33:13SPEAKER_01: Am I saying that right?
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: Jenkins?
- 33:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so it's just it's interesting to see all these names thrown in just just because their connection to the Scott Drew tree.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that was kind of funny seeing that tweet uh from Goodman that was basically like, Hey, if you have a head coaching position open, I would try to pull from the Scott Drew tree of one of the current Baylor head or assistant coaches, and like all the Baylor people responded, shut the hell up.
- 33:38SPEAKER_02: Okay, stop talking about this.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: We don't want to keep losing more guys.
- 33:42SPEAKER_02: Um, and by the way, the last guy we took from Baylor is turned out to be pretty good.
- 33:46SPEAKER_02: So uh talking about Joey McGuire, of course.
- 33:49SPEAKER_02: So um the I I wanted to mention one more candidate before I start talking about some of the uh Texas Tech ties um here.
- 33:58SPEAKER_02: And this is I this is a long shot in my eyes.
- 34:00SPEAKER_02: I I'll some certain people who I very much respect their basketball opinion have been talking about it.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: Um, and that's uh Ben McCollum, who is the current head coach at Northwest Missouri State.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: And now I know that's not a thrilling name to see uh your potential next head coach coming from a Division II program, but this guy's won multiple national championships down there.
- 34:27SPEAKER_02: He uh is a very well-connected guy.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: Um, apparently runs an awesome, kind of fun style of basketball that's new and that's um just kind of a good fit ultimately for Texas Tech.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: I don't think this is gonna happen.
- 34:42SPEAKER_02: I don't think they're gonna hire a Division II head coach, but uh it's it's a name to keep an eye out on.
- 34:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it I I think it's absolutely worth looking at.
- 34:51SPEAKER_01: Um I I I know the the idea of jumping from division two to division one's obviously gonna be pretty big, but I mean if you can look at um a program here in the conference, you can look at Kansas State.
- 35:01SPEAKER_01: They essentially hired a Division II uh head football coach.
- 35:05SPEAKER_01: I know FCSD is the one, but there's a huge gap between FBS and FCS, um, especially at those level levels.
- 35:11SPEAKER_01: So um it seems to be working out just fine over there.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: So I I I obviously it's more just about your coaching ability, more so than where you are at, I suppose.
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: Um, so it that's I think that's interesting, I think, to look at.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, I like the idea of bringing a guy that's one-to-one national championships.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: Who doesn't?
- 35:26SPEAKER_02: So well, and you also look at our past two head coaches, uh, Mark Adams.
- 35:30SPEAKER_02: I know, I know Adams and Beard, both their tenures ended really badly here at Texas Tech, but they reached really high peaks and they succeeded ultimately uh at Texas Tech.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: And Mark Adams, longtime junior college head coach, and Chris Beard, who right before he was at Arkansas Little Rock, was a division two coach.
- 35:49SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it's it's not like the um the level that they're currently coaching at defines them.
- 35:55SPEAKER_02: You know, everybody's got to start somewhere, and this guy's won national championships at a lower level.
- 35:59SPEAKER_02: So that's to that's something to say.
- 36:01SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: But that's just to mention, I don't I don't think ultimately he's gonna be considered, and he's but yeah, that's another thing.
- 36:08SPEAKER_02: He's young, he could potentially be here a long time.
- 36:10SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, just kind of we'll just have to wait and see.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: But um, moving on to I just want to put all these guys in kind of the same category here, um, because they're guys that have been on the Texas Tech staff either last year or the previous year, uh, that have been rumored to be uh the next coach or or interviewed or you know, potentially in the mix here for the head coaching job.
- 36:36SPEAKER_02: And that's uh Barrett Peary, Corey Williams, and Al Pinkins.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: Um, all three of those guys, uh, we've heard that the players really, really, really would like them to be uh considered for the head coaching position.
- 36:53SPEAKER_02: Um, obviously, these are guys that recruited them to Texas Tech that have been in their lives for the past year or two.
- 36:59SPEAKER_02: Um, and so, you know, it's an obvious connection there.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: Um Barrett Peary has uh been a head coach at Portland State.
- 37:08SPEAKER_02: He uh he had a kind of a weird career at Texas Tech.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 37:14SPEAKER_02: Um, he was brought in as kind of the offensive mind.
- 37:17SPEAKER_02: Um, you know, it was it was always rumored that Adams never really gave him full reins of the offense, um, and then ultimately left that position um for a similar spot at UNLV and has done well at UNLV.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: So um Barrett Peary is a guy who I don't think will ultimately be considered, but is definitely a name, and it's because of his connections with the current roster.
- 37:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's a and he's a familiar, familiar face.
- 37:48SPEAKER_01: I think he'd probably be pretty easy to sell to the fan base.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, no, I think so.
- 37:52SPEAKER_02: I I think by all means Barrett Peary's a cool dude, great, great person, but uh I just don't know about him as a head coach at this level.
- 37:59SPEAKER_02: Uh but I've been surprised before.
- 38:01SPEAKER_02: So uh I would I again I would talk myself into pretty much all these guys uh to be if if we ultimately do hire them.
- 38:09SPEAKER_02: Um Corey Williams is a guy who has been a head coach, uh, did not do well as a head coach at Stetson.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: He I think he was there for like six years and had a pretty pretty horrible record.
- 38:21SPEAKER_02: Um, obviously was the interim when Mark Adams was suspended and uh we didn't play well.
- 38:27SPEAKER_02: It was just a one-game sample size as him as head coach in a very crazy season.
- 38:32SPEAKER_02: So I'm not gonna put that against him or anything, but um, I I ultimately I don't think I think he's a great recruiter.
- 38:38SPEAKER_02: I don't think he's a guy you want to put as your head coach.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I'm with you.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, just uh it seems like too too big of a job right now for him.
- 38:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah, same same deal with Al Pinkins.
- 38:48SPEAKER_02: Great recruiter.
- 38:49SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't really see him as a head coach at Texas Tech.
- 38:51SPEAKER_02: So um it would be cool if we retained some of these guys, right?
- 38:55SPEAKER_02: The new head coach.
- 38:56SPEAKER_02: That doesn't happen very often.
- 38:58SPEAKER_02: Um, when a new head coach is brought in, they like to bring in their own guys.
- 39:01SPEAKER_02: So uh it would be tough to lose those, uh lose those guys because they have been great recruiters and they've been uh great parts of the staff in a uh in a couple successful years, so or one successful year under Mark Adams.
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: So um that was that was kind of it for the for the Texas Tech ties.
- 39:18SPEAKER_02: I have some long shots if you want to hear those.
- 39:20SPEAKER_01: I do, obviously.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 39:23SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, there's only two right now, and they're really just like dreams that I don't think will ultimately come true.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: Uh Jerome Tang is one of them at Kansas State.
- 39:32SPEAKER_02: Obviously, uh the has had a really, really awesome year um coming into a Kansas State program where a lot of people picked them last in the Big 12, and they are uh going to be comfortably in the NCAA tournament, spent a lot of the year in the top 25.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: Um, he is one of the best recruiters in the country.
- 39:50SPEAKER_02: Uh, was on Scott Drew's staff at Baylor for numerous years and was a huge part of why their program is where it is at this point.
- 40:00SPEAKER_02: Um, if we can somehow steal Jerome Tang away from Kansas State, which I don't think we will ultimately be able to do, yeah.
- 40:08SPEAKER_02: Um, but it would be an A plus steal if you could do that.
- 40:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I just I don't see us cooping a uh an interconference coach.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: I just I don't think I I can't see that happening for us.
- 40:21SPEAKER_01: Um, I and I don't I don't think people would normally be able to get away with that like against tech, too.
- 40:25SPEAKER_01: I mean, I just think like the beard situation was just uh an alumnus slash beard being beard situation.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: So uh, but I I I'm with you.
- 40:33SPEAKER_01: I think K-State's about to lock him down.
- 40:35SPEAKER_01: I think they're probably gonna drop a stack in his in his in his lap and say, You're in it, you're it, you're here for a long time now, and we're at where we dare anybody try to beat this kind of thing.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, absolutely.
- 40:45SPEAKER_02: And I mean, you know, you're talking about Kansas State, Texas Tech.
- 40:48SPEAKER_02: I would argue that Texas Tech has uh a better chance to succeed, a better program, but it's not like K-State is a dumpster fire, you know.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: K-State K-State has awesome resources and it's a good job to have.
- 40:59SPEAKER_02: So I I would I I wouldn't see him leaving after one year to go from Kansas State to Texas Tech.
- 41:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, so that was one of them.
- 41:08SPEAKER_02: And then um, unfortunately, uh the old Longhorns are doing pretty good under their interim coach.
- 41:15SPEAKER_02: Uh, but Rodney Terry, Rodney Terry would be a guy I'd love to be the head coach at Texas Tech.
- 41:21SPEAKER_02: Um, I I you know UT has done some crazy things in the past, but I don't know how you take the Big 12 coach of the year um taking over for a program that was uh in a lot of turmoil because the previous guy was a piece of crap and got fired and uh really brought this whole program together.
- 41:42SPEAKER_02: Um was known long before he was the interim of UT for being an awesome recruiter.
- 41:48SPEAKER_02: Um if UT decides against retaining Rodney Terry, he should be called the media like from Texas Tech.
- 42:00SPEAKER_02: He should get one of the first calls, and I would love it if he was if uh he was brought on.
- 42:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, it's it's an he's an interesting question because I mean, don't you think we're gonna try to lock someone down fairly soon?
- 42:14SPEAKER_01: Um, because with the thing with it with with Rodney is you'd have to wait.
- 42:17SPEAKER_01: You'd have to wait until the end, the end of their tournament run to see what's going to happen, you know.
- 42:22SPEAKER_01: Uh like we'd be waiting on UT to make a decision for a team, probably to really even interview him, you know.
- 42:27SPEAKER_01: Um and I'm with you, man.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: I think this would be a great hire.
- 42:31SPEAKER_01: And I do, I do think there's a strong chance UT doesn't retain him.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm putting it at like 50-50 because I I have a hard time envisioning UT high uh hiring an assistant coach for the head for the head coaching position.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: I just feel like they're gonna want to go out there and get a bigger name, someone that's you know been established at a uh a power team for a while.
- 42:49SPEAKER_01: I think that's just kind of their idea how they're gonna roll.
- 42:51SPEAKER_01: But uh, I think I think this is kind of this would be an obvious hire too.
- 42:54SPEAKER_01: I think I think it'd be a lot of fun.
- 42:55SPEAKER_01: Uh and obviously I don't think he's connected enough to beard for us to really have any sour feelings about it.
- 43:00SPEAKER_02: No, for sure.
- 43:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, he was only brought on when he got to UT.
- 43:04SPEAKER_02: Um, so uh I I'd love it if Rodney Terry was our head coach next year.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, I don't think it's going to happen because I think UT would be fools to not retain him after the season that they've had.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: Um, and for him, the recruiting ability, everything's there for Rodney Terry right now.
- 43:21SPEAKER_02: So uh those are just some candidates.
- 43:24SPEAKER_02: Uh, if you have any more, I I'd be surprised if it's not one of these guys, but uh we've we've seen stuff come out of nowhere, a lot of Joey Maguire before.
- 43:32SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I guess we'll just have to see.
- 43:35SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, man.
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: I'd love to get me uh I this is kind of what the theme on Twitter is go get you a Joey Maguire for basketball, you know, kind of kind of guy.
- 43:42SPEAKER_01: And that's uh I think that's our key to success in Lubbock now, and then today's age.
- 43:47SPEAKER_01: So I I think we do need a an ultra passionate, good recruiter, uh connection builder guy out in Lubbock.
- 43:54SPEAKER_01: I think that's who we need in the Hub City.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 43:56SPEAKER_02: No, I mean if if Joey Maguire could coach both teams, I'd appreciate I'd be all in.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: I love that he's on the committee.
- 44:03SPEAKER_01: I think that's so cool.
- 44:04SPEAKER_02: I think that's really cool too.
- 44:05SPEAKER_02: That uh really shows his faith and and trust in this program, uh, you know, to be a part of that.
- 44:11SPEAKER_02: So that's cool.
- 44:12SPEAKER_02: Uh, we should talk about some of the bad things that have happened since um Adams has ultimately been let go.
- 44:19SPEAKER_02: This is naturally gonna happen when your head coach uh is no longer the head coach at your program.
- 44:24SPEAKER_02: You're gonna get players leaving, you're going to get uh rumors all over the place.
- 44:29SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, I think everybody should be prepared for uh a lot of players who enter the transfer portal if they have not already.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: Um, let's talk about uh Fardos.
- 44:40SPEAKER_02: Fardos AMAC uh entered the transfer portal a solid two hours after we lost to West Virginia in the Big 12 championship.
- 44:48SPEAKER_02: Very cool.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, you know, you don't I don't blame him for entering the transfer portal.
- 44:57SPEAKER_02: I don't think I'd blame any player for entering the transfer portal after the crazy season that we've had.
- 45:01SPEAKER_02: Um, it's really the way in which he did it.
- 45:07SPEAKER_02: Um, this is kind of the thing I have with Kyler Edwards.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: So Kyler Edwards goes on social media, uh, you know, posts an image that says he's a red raider for life during the coaching's change, and then ultimately deletes it and then bail, you know, bolts to Houston.
- 45:22SPEAKER_02: So uh that will leave a bad taste in your mouth because you posted something and now you're taking it back and changing your mind and doing all that.
- 45:30SPEAKER_02: Um Fordos uh clearly uh gave uh you know paid money to have the Tipton Edits guy on Twitter uh make a graphic for him saying that he's going to enter the transfer portal.
- 45:45SPEAKER_02: They posted it two hours after they lost to West Virginia after their season's over, has the tweet in the drafts uh saying, you know, it's funny how people love you so much for this and they don't understand the grind that you did to get back.
- 46:01SPEAKER_02: Um I hate this mentality with players.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: I think it's so ridiculous and it's so overblown of the fan response to a player going into the transfer portal.
- 46:15SPEAKER_02: So Fardos, I I'm not gonna miss you, my man.
- 46:18SPEAKER_02: Uh, we had a lot of uh we had a lot of hope for your career at Texas Tech.
- 46:24SPEAKER_02: I think you did, uh, you know, ultimately it sucks that you got hurt.
- 46:28SPEAKER_02: We were, I think this maybe this whole season's changed if you don't get hurt, but right uh, you know, it is what it is, and for him to kind of go out the way he's going out, it's it's gonna leave a bad taste in my mouth that I'm just not gonna miss him.
- 46:42SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely, man.
- 46:43SPEAKER_01: Like you're you're really just kind of trying to burn bridges.
- 46:46SPEAKER_01: Like you could, you could, you could, you could be like, Man, it was a great run, uh, I'm gonna do what what's best for me kind of thing.
- 46:51SPEAKER_01: Um, but wait a bit.
- 46:53SPEAKER_01: You could have waited until Monday or whatever, right?
- 46:55SPEAKER_01: Like, go home, like get to love it, go home, you know, and have a few days and then announce it.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: Like, I'm with you, man.
- 47:02SPEAKER_01: It's just kind of tackless to me.
- 47:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, I get we're talking about like really young men, but it's just kind of tackless.
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and like another thing, these players ultimately, if you get the majority of players that are gonna enter the transfer portal, they are doing their due diligence here.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: They are going and they are gonna get offers from people, they are working out NIL stuff, potentially working, they're just seeing all options, which they should do when your coach gets fired.
- 47:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, um, so I don't blame anybody for entering the transfer portal.
- 47:32SPEAKER_02: It's the response to this, it's you saying funny how they talk crazy when you want to do what's best for you, laughing emoji, laughing emoji, and then talk about your grind back into the season and everything like that.
- 47:43SPEAKER_02: Dude, you're a basketball player, I'd expect you to try to grind your way back if you're playing on any team because this is ultimately for your future.
- 47:50SPEAKER_02: This is not for us.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: I I you know the fans take stuff a little too seriously sometimes.
- 47:54SPEAKER_02: And yes, there are fans that go way too far on social media, but my man, you gotta.
- 47:59SPEAKER_02: I mean, you just had that waiting in the drafts.
- 48:01SPEAKER_02: You were gonna post that whether you got one response or a hundred responses.
- 48:05SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, even if you got none.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: I mean like man, all these haters like they trans players will.
- 48:11SPEAKER_01: It's there's like two paths, you'd be like super grateful and super you know proud of all that, or you can be a jerk, and he's kind of falling into the jerk category for no reason.
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: But whatever, man.
- 48:22SPEAKER_02: Whatever.
- 48:23SPEAKER_02: Uh, good luck to you in your future.
- 48:25SPEAKER_02: Um, there were reports that dropped today that Elijah Fisher was going to enter or intends to enter the portal.
- 48:33SPEAKER_02: Again, you can't technically enter the portal until Monday.
- 48:36SPEAKER_02: Um, but those rumors were quickly shot down.
- 48:40SPEAKER_02: So we hear it from like almost every pretty big uh you know media guy uh is saying that Elijah Fisher intends to go to the portal.
- 48:51SPEAKER_02: The the same guy that Fardos paid to make that graphic, he also posts the the picture that Elijah Fisher is gonna enter the portal, and then uh this guy and then uh one of the big NIL donors for Texas Tech, Kirk Knowles.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: I think uh a lot of people are familiar with his um, you know, level 13 agency and uh all that kind of stuff.
- 49:11SPEAKER_02: He just starts going at everybody.
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: He starts responding to all sorts of people that are saying that uh Elijah Fisher's entering the portal and goes, not true, not true, not true.
- 49:22SPEAKER_02: And then uh I think some local guys, local media from uh Lubbock have like actually reached out to Texas Tech officials and say that no, Elijah Fisher has not entered his name in the transfer portal.
- 49:33SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, more news there.
- 49:35SPEAKER_02: I'm sure there's a lot of different factors uh with NIL, with who's gonna be the next head coach, who you know, some of his teammates that are ultimately staying.
- 49:44SPEAKER_02: So as of right now, Elijah Fisher is not in the transfer portal.
- 49:49SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, it's who knows what's gonna happen then.
- 49:52SPEAKER_01: Like this, this is this is all over the place.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: So um, it's interesting to see like a big donor like getting out there and be like, no, no, no, I don't think I've ever seen that before in my life.
- 50:00SPEAKER_01: You know, it's just pretty funny.
- 50:01SPEAKER_01: What a wild ride this new era of College of Sports is, man.
- 50:05SPEAKER_01: Just wild.
- 50:06SPEAKER_01: But I mean, I hope he stays, man.
- 50:08SPEAKER_01: He's a young talent, you know.
- 50:09SPEAKER_01: He's he's so Hyler Green just needs to develop, he's a little raw.
- 50:12SPEAKER_01: You know, if we can get him in the system a little longer, I'm sure he can turn into a star.
- 50:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we should mention, um, and social media is not set in stone, as we've seen from Kyler Edwards.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: Uh Jalen Tyson tweeted out uh all love and then hashtag RRFL, which means Red Raider for life.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: Um, that was nice news to have on a very tumultuous day for Texas Tech.
- 50:37SPEAKER_02: Uh, so I I you know ultimately it doesn't say whether or not he's staying or not because this stuff changes very quickly, but it is nice to see him post something about Texas Tech and how he loves the school and everything of that nature.
- 50:52SPEAKER_02: So that's something positive.
- 50:54SPEAKER_02: Uh Kyron Lindsay also did that.
- 50:57SPEAKER_02: He uh transferred mid-season from Georgia, kind of did the Jalen Tyson thing from last year, where he was a mid-season transfer, couldn't play though.
- 51:06SPEAKER_02: Um, he's a guy that I think is committed for Texas Tech, but again, this stuff changes very quickly, and it's all ultimately gonna depend on who we hire and how that guy and the players uh you know their relationship grows and if they stay or not.
- 51:20SPEAKER_02: So do you think that a lot of lot of stuff to come?
- 51:22SPEAKER_01: Do you think that like that that that it makes prior?
- 51:25SPEAKER_01: Do you think that prioritizes hiring a coach pretty quickly then?
- 51:27SPEAKER_01: Like just because they can the players can bounce really fast.
- 51:31SPEAKER_01: You think do you think we're gonna try to move quick or do you think we're gonna take our time with this?
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: I think they want to move quick.
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, if you want to hire some of these guys that are still coaching, yeah, you know, you don't really have a lot of say in that.
- 51:43SPEAKER_02: So um you you hope the the ultimate thing here is you just hire a guy who's uh you know a good fit that is currently not in the tournament or anything like that, or gets knocked out early or something like that.
- 51:55SPEAKER_02: Um, and you get a guy in quick to re-recruit your current team, but I I I don't know how feasible that is or how realistic that is to think that's gonna happen.
- 52:06SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 52:09SPEAKER_02: So I don't know, man.
- 52:11SPEAKER_02: Any any final thoughts on basketball, the entire situation?
- 52:15SPEAKER_01: No, man.
- 52:16SPEAKER_01: I think I think we went on about that for about an hour now.
- 52:18SPEAKER_01: So I think I think we probably juiced that lemon to uh to the rhyme.
- 52:22unknown: Yeah.
- 52:24SPEAKER_01: Was that a real mode of metaphor?
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: Did I that did that make sense?
- 52:27SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 52:28SPEAKER_02: You definitely said something right there.
- 52:31SPEAKER_02: I will let you know about that.
- 52:33SPEAKER_02: But um, you know a sport that's not in a bad spot right now.
- 52:38SPEAKER_01: No, no, that's it's it's not Texas Tech Baseball.
- 52:41SPEAKER_02: Very good.
- 52:42SPEAKER_02: Uh very good.
- 52:43SPEAKER_02: They did lose today, but they took the series against Iowa, who was 23, a ranked team in Lubbock.
- 52:50SPEAKER_02: Um, 14 and 3 to start the year.
- 52:53SPEAKER_02: Um it's been fun.
- 52:55SPEAKER_02: I don't I haven't caught a ton of the games because I've had a lot of personal stuff going on um in my life.
- 53:01SPEAKER_02: So uh it was fun to kind of watch today and just see a little bit of a comeback.
- 53:06SPEAKER_02: We got some dudes on this team, it's it's an exciting young ball club.
- 53:09SPEAKER_01: Absolutely, man.
- 53:10SPEAKER_01: You can see you can kind of see coming together.
- 53:12SPEAKER_01: I mean, we have already have an awesome record, eyes are on the postseason already, man.
- 53:15SPEAKER_01: Um, conference plays right around the corner.
- 53:17SPEAKER_01: So man, I feel we we've been so busy lately uh with all the going on.
- 53:21SPEAKER_01: I feel like we blinked and it's it's already here.
- 53:23SPEAKER_01: Um, and not just and that's not the only diamond team that's doing well, too.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: I mean, our softball teams put together a pretty solid season as well.
- 53:28SPEAKER_01: I mean, we're we're 20 and 7 in softball, too.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: So, dude, our our our bat sports are redeeming basketball right now.
- 53:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 53:36SPEAKER_02: The the bat sports are fun.
- 53:38SPEAKER_02: Uh, it's getting into a little better weather out there.
- 53:41SPEAKER_02: Go go out if you're in Loving, go to the baseball games, go have a good time because there's a good chance this team's gonna be pretty solid, and I'd expect another postseason run.
- 53:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely, man.
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: It's expected now.
- 53:52SPEAKER_02: You know what has been fun though is the pitching.
- 53:54SPEAKER_02: The pitching last season you kind of had two guys, and then it was a little sketchy afterwards.
- 54:00SPEAKER_02: This is like you got some real arms here, um, of guys that are putting in work early on, and I think you have some depth.
- 54:08SPEAKER_02: So um we've seen uh kind of the youthfulness of this team in some of the losses that we have, the loss we had today, the loss against AM.
- 54:16SPEAKER_02: Uh, you know, there was some uh errors in the fielding for some younger players.
- 54:21SPEAKER_02: So, you know, it's just gonna take some time for those guys to really uh get you know situated and uh ready to play in this level of uh collegiate baseball.
- 54:31SPEAKER_02: So um Gavin Cash has been fun.
- 54:33SPEAKER_02: He's the UT transfer, he's hitting the ball like crazy.
- 54:36SPEAKER_02: So uh just really fun, really, really good group of guys, I think.
- 54:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, but we needed the pitching step up.
- 54:41SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's kind of what was holding us back last season.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: So it's it's good to see a better bullpen this time around to really make it a real run.
- 54:47SPEAKER_01: Because I mean, this this this program is hungry for that national title.
- 54:50SPEAKER_01: Uh be great to grab a big one, all a big 12 uh bowl on the way out, though.
- 54:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, for sure.
- 54:55SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 54:56SPEAKER_02: Um you want to talk about four corners?
- 55:00SPEAKER_01: Well, I mean, it's it's kind of like our our our the pack slander hour uh part of the portion where um so I mean it's I keep flipping back and forth, man, of whether or not they're gonna join the Big 12.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: Um last if you asked me like a week ago, I'm like, oh, they're in the Big 12.
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: But like I swear, every I I kind of go through like this logical dissonance in my head of what's actually gonna happen.
- 55:21SPEAKER_01: I think I'm leaning back towards they're not coming right now.
- 55:24SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh I I I think it's kind of reliant on what Oregon and Washington are gonna do at the end of the day.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't think they're gonna add SMU though.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: I don't think that's happening.
- 55:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 55:35SPEAKER_02: So if I if y'all haven't been keeping up, Pete Thamill released or released another um article basically saying that the bet that the Big 12 is back in on rating the Pac-12, uh, specifically the four corner schools, which are Utah, Arizona, Arizona State, and Colorado, um, to come to the Big 12 and make it a 16-team league.
- 56:00SPEAKER_02: Um, I this stuff, this uh, this realignment stuff, it's just like I'm not gonna believe it until it happens.
- 56:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and with the realignment stuff, it's just gossip.
- 56:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, it's just gossip.
- 56:12SPEAKER_02: You you hear one thing from one AD who's had a bad day, yeah, something like that, who says something to a reporter, and then all of a sudden that gets blown up into a huge article.
- 56:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 56:21SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know.
- 56:22SPEAKER_02: I'll see if it happens.
- 56:23SPEAKER_02: It is weird that the Pac-12 can't seem to get a media deal going, um, which I think is a huge factor.
- 56:29SPEAKER_02: And if they can't get something good, these schools are gonna, you know, go to a better lifeline.
- 56:35SPEAKER_02: And uh, you know, they're gonna be smart about it.
- 56:37SPEAKER_02: If if they have any sense, they're gonna be smart about it.
- 56:40SPEAKER_01: But I I do think the longer it takes, the bigger the chance of them coming over is true.
- 56:46SPEAKER_01: Um and I I really do people are gushing over Bray Urmark.
- 56:50SPEAKER_01: I really think that you know, especially when he's talking to a school like Arizona, who's a basketball school, like he could sit here and sell them on a vision that this is gonna be the basketball league and you want you want in kind of thing.
- 57:01SPEAKER_01: We'd love to have you.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: Um, because I mean imagine a KU Arizona uh matchup in the for a conference game, you know.
- 57:07SPEAKER_01: That's that's insane.
- 57:09SPEAKER_01: So I would love them.
- 57:10SPEAKER_01: And like I keep like I said, I keep flip-flopping.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Today, if you asked me, I said no, it's not happening, but tomorrow I might be like, dude, they're coming, it's happening.
- 57:16SPEAKER_01: So I would love it.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: Um, Utah seems to be the like a champion for the Pac-12 right now, like trying to keep it to keep the band together.
- 57:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Um, I I think most of it has to lean on they don't want to be associated with BYU sort of situation, more than anything.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: I think they they seem to have a very sour relationship.
- 57:34SPEAKER_01: Um, but that would instantly be one of the biggest games of the Big 12, like BYU versus Utah every year, the Holy War.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: That'd be like that'd be that'd be prime time television.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think Utah's AD was the one that went out on Twitter and just kind of you know, uh said, You gotta be kidding me on some of this, uh some of this realignment stuff.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: So um, you know, even he doesn't have ultimate say over this.
- 57:55SPEAKER_02: So it's it's uh it's just kind of uh take it day by day.
- 57:59SPEAKER_02: And if it happens, awesome.
- 58:01SPEAKER_02: If it doesn't, we're gonna be fine.
- 58:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 58:04SPEAKER_02: Uh if I will say, if even if you don't add the four corners, Gonzaga talk is heating up.
- 58:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's getting real.
- 58:11SPEAKER_01: That's that's really interesting.
- 58:13SPEAKER_01: Like, I I have it's what a what a jump.
- 58:16SPEAKER_01: Like what a what a what a leap of faith for Brett Yormark to bring on a basketball member like that.
- 58:20SPEAKER_01: I mean, that I think it'd be really cool.
- 58:22SPEAKER_01: Um, but I I hope it doesn't just turn into we just we're picking up all these little mid-majors and plugging them into the Big 12 for basketball.
- 58:29SPEAKER_01: I don't want to go there, like I I want to make sure that this is like a vetted process, not like let's add everybody from the big East sort of sort of thing.
- 58:37SPEAKER_01: You know, so uh what do you think?
- 58:40SPEAKER_02: I'd be fine.
- 58:40SPEAKER_02: I we've talked about Gonzaga before.
- 58:42SPEAKER_02: I think it'd be cool if we added them.
- 58:44SPEAKER_02: I I think it would be weird if you only added Gonzaga um and you didn't add anybody else, and you just have one basketball-only school.
- 58:52SPEAKER_02: Uh, to me, that's a little weird, but I I think there's more to follow if you do add Gonzaga.
- 58:58SPEAKER_02: Um, but I think ultimately you don't add Gonzaga until this four this Pac-12 stuff is completely done.
- 59:05SPEAKER_02: So uh this could be a long, long time until we see this happen.
- 59:08SPEAKER_01: I I wonder, I wonder if we add on the Pac-12 schools if we still add on Gonzaga.
- 59:13SPEAKER_01: Like I wonder if that happens or not.
- 59:15SPEAKER_01: I want I wonder if the four quarter schools would like block that conversation from happening.
- 59:19SPEAKER_02: I think they would probably like that more, right?
- 59:22SPEAKER_02: You get another West Coast team, uh, you know, you get a little closer program.
- 59:27SPEAKER_02: Uh, it legitimatizes that you know you still have the best basketball conference.
- 59:31SPEAKER_02: So uh I don't know.
- 59:33SPEAKER_02: We'll we'll just have to see.
- 59:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely, man.
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: Like I said, it's all gossip and rumors at this point.
- 59:37SPEAKER_02: Yep, for sure.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: Um, you got anything else?
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: No, man.
- 59:41SPEAKER_01: I think uh I mean we talked about basketball way longer than I thought we would.
- 59:44SPEAKER_02: Well, it's kind of the big thing right now.
- 59:46SPEAKER_02: It is kind of the thing.
- 59:49SPEAKER_02: All right, man.
- 59:50SPEAKER_02: Then we will end it off with Song of the Week, like we always do.
- 59:54SPEAKER_02: Go ahead.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: I feel like I have no choice but to do a panhandler song.
- 1:00:00SPEAKER_01: Like they just dropped their new album.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_01: For all y'all, those of y'all that don't know, it's made up of the band members of mostly tech alums.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean technically they're all tech alums.
- 1:00:08SPEAKER_01: Uh one just didn't graduate from there.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_01: Uh, I'm gonna go with their new song.
- 1:00:12SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go a new song off their album, uh, written by uh Charlie Snout.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be Flatlands, the opening song on that album.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 1:00:19SPEAKER_01: It's uh it's talking about the West Texas from the perspective of animals, and I think it's really cool.
- 1:00:24SPEAKER_04: When I fold my wings behind me and I rock it to the ground, should my talents find their mark?
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_04: It's quite a long way down Flatland.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_02: Um didn't listen to all of it, but did listen to some of it.
- 1:00:43SPEAKER_02: Um, it's good, it's good.
- 1:00:45SPEAKER_02: I I I like their I like their kind of fun.
- 1:00:47SPEAKER_02: It is.
- 1:00:48SPEAKER_02: It's fun, it's very West Texas.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, if you want an album that is West Texas, that you got it right here.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:00:55SPEAKER_01: Fun is the word I'd use.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_02: Yes, exactly.
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_02: Um, yeah, good choice, man.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_02: Um, about you, man.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_02: My song of the week, uh, because we are in need of a new basketball coach.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_02: Um, we need a new hero.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_02: That's what we need for Texas Tech basketball.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_02: My song of the week is Hero by Sturgil Simpson.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, I thought we were gonna say nickelback.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_02: No, that would have been a good one, but no.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_02: I think I I feel like I've done that one before.
- 1:01:22SPEAKER_01: Um that's nickelback, right?
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_02: Not the Chad Kroger Spider-Man Hero song.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_02: Great song, but no.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_02: Good song, but no.
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_02: Uh, I'm talking about Sturgil Simpson's hero, uh, which is another great song.
- 1:01:40SPEAKER_02: Um, I don't know if you want to compare the two, be my guest.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_02: Uh this one is less of a meme song, though.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_02: So I will go uh go give it a listen.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_02: My song is a hero Sturgil Simpson.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_06: Talk me you only need one hate.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_06: You can't hear real print in this life.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_06: If I'm too low, then table.

- 1:02:20SPEAKER_01: I sadly uh have to say the the uh outro will not sound the same.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_02: No, it won't.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: No, it won't.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_02: Uh we'll until we get a new coach and I can put together a new sound bite that sounds stupid.
