- 0:38Speaker 2: Welcome back.
- 0:38Speaker 1: Thanks for being with us here on a Tuesday, watching
- 0:43Speaker 1: The Masters this weekend, and I'm watching on Sunday, and
- 0:47Speaker 1: what I'm thinking is, Man, this Alan ship Nuck's timing
- 0:51Speaker 1: couldn't be better.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Alan, How are you.
- 0:57Speaker 5: Well?
- 0:58Speaker 6: I'm happy that that's what you were thinking of while
- 0:59Speaker 6: you were watching. You should have been thinking of you know,
- 1:02Speaker 6: Ben Hogan and Jack Nicholas and you know, some of
- 1:07Speaker 6: the greats in the game. Not little old me, but yeah,
- 1:10Speaker 6: I will say that the timing is exquisite. Some Gorilla
- 1:14Speaker 6: marketing by Rory is very helpful.
- 1:17Speaker 1: We saw just like we did last year, which you
- 1:22Speaker 1: wrote about in your new book, Everything Good and Bad
- 1:29Speaker 1: about Rory in eighteen holes on both of those Sundays
- 1:33Speaker 1: the last two years, did we not?
- 1:37Speaker 7: Yeah?
- 1:37Speaker 6: I mean, for all of his incredible physical tools, I
- 1:41Speaker 6: think the most impressive thing about Rory has to be
- 1:44Speaker 6: his resilience. Like the guy can take a punch and
- 1:48Speaker 6: he just keeps marching forward. Obviously we saw it last
- 1:52Speaker 6: year and this year. You know, he blows the lead
- 1:56Speaker 6: on Saturday, gets off to an okay start, and the
- 1:59Speaker 6: double on four, the bogey on six. All of a sudden,
- 2:02Speaker 6: he's three back, guys are racing up the leader board.
- 2:05Speaker 6: He's got no life, he's got no energy. And then
- 2:10Speaker 6: for about you know, two and a half hours, he
- 2:12Speaker 6: just accessed to his genius and you know, played eleven
- 2:15Speaker 6: holes and four under to you know, snatch the tournament
- 2:18Speaker 6: by the throat, little wabble on eighteen. But he had
- 2:22Speaker 6: a shot to play with. He was never going to
- 2:24Speaker 6: pull a Phil Nicholson and you know, make a double bogie,
- 2:28Speaker 6: so he made a workman like you know five to
- 2:32Speaker 6: close it out. And so it was the scary thing
- 2:37Speaker 6: for the competition is Rory won the Masters with his
- 2:40Speaker 6: B minus game? You know he was never driving it. Well,
- 2:44Speaker 6: that's his superpower. You know, last in the field in
- 2:47Speaker 6: driving accuracy over the first two rounds, struggled on Saturday
- 2:53Speaker 6: and still somehow pulled it out. So pretty incredible performance.
- 2:59Speaker 6: You know, that was a professional victory. It was a
- 3:03Speaker 6: workman like it was. It was a wily veteran and
- 3:08Speaker 6: just Rory's continued evolution is really fun to watch.
- 3:11Speaker 1: Is he that much better than the field when he
- 3:15Speaker 1: is on top of his game? Allen?
- 3:19Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, obviously Scotty Scheffler plays at an incredibly
- 3:23Speaker 6: high level. Yes, almost every time he teas it up.
- 3:27Speaker 6: But I think Rory's best is still the best in
- 3:29Speaker 6: the game. And it was significant. You know, Scotty threw
- 3:34Speaker 6: everything he had at Rory. Yes, I mean he's going
- 3:37Speaker 6: to rue the missed opportunities on the par fives, but
- 3:40Speaker 6: you know, first guy to play the weekend bogie free
- 3:44Speaker 6: at the Masters, and he put quite a charge on
- 3:48Speaker 6: and but ultimately he was Scotty who blinked. He couldn't
- 3:51Speaker 6: make the putts when he had to, He couldn't make
- 3:53Speaker 6: the birdies on the back nine when he had to
- 3:55Speaker 6: and Rory did. So it's very significant, you know, for
- 4:01Speaker 6: to beat Scotty head to head and put some daylight
- 4:05Speaker 6: between him and Scotty. From a legacy standpoint, you know,
- 4:07Speaker 6: Roy now has six majors, Scotty has four. Rory has
- 4:11Speaker 6: the Grand Lam, Scotty doesn't. Rory has back to back masters.
- 4:16Speaker 6: You know, Scotty's never done that. So it was a
- 4:18Speaker 6: monumental victory for McElroy. And you know, this, this budding
- 4:23Speaker 6: rivalry with Scheffler could be incredible, and this was the
- 4:27Speaker 6: first tantalizing you know glimp.
- 4:30Speaker 2: You know, last year.
- 4:31Speaker 1: We're talking about the fact that this guy only quote
- 4:35Speaker 1: had four majors and he hadn't had one in forever,
- 4:38Speaker 1: he may never have another one. Now he's got six
- 4:43Speaker 1: one year later and we're looking at him going, I
- 4:48Speaker 1: wonder how many he could win after all.
- 4:52Speaker 6: Yeah, it's quite a career upgrade, you know for Rory's legacy.
- 4:56Speaker 6: These last you know, twelve plus months and he into
- 5:00Speaker 6: very very rarefied air. I mean, only six guys have
- 5:04Speaker 6: won the career Grand Slam. Only only four now have
- 5:08Speaker 6: won back to back Green jackets. That's Nicholas Tiger and
- 5:12Speaker 6: Nick Faldo and now Rory, So he's doing some very
- 5:16Speaker 6: special things. And even before this Masters, I you know,
- 5:20Speaker 6: I'd said he's definitely one. He's now made himself one
- 5:22Speaker 6: of a dozen and greatest players of all time, and
- 5:25Speaker 6: every time he picks off another one, he just keeps
- 5:27Speaker 6: moving up the list. So you know, he's he has
- 5:31Speaker 6: a chance now to go down as one of the
- 5:33Speaker 6: handful of greatest golfers of all time. I mean, he's
- 5:36Speaker 6: got to win a few more. But he's highly motivated.
- 5:39Speaker 6: His game is more mature and polished than it's ever been.
- 5:43Speaker 6: He does a great job of taking care of himself.
- 5:45Speaker 6: You know, Brooks Koepka is that broken down, has surgery.
- 5:49Speaker 6: Justin Thomas has broken down, has surgeries, Jordan Spieth has.
- 5:53Speaker 6: Rory's been incredibly healthy. I mean, his longevity is highly underrated.
- 5:57Speaker 6: So I think a lot of his best golfers in
- 5:59Speaker 6: front of them, and it's really exciting.
- 6:02Speaker 1: I noticed on social media and being what it is,
- 6:08Speaker 1: the comments about Phil and Rory being you said, Hey,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I like Phil, but there's certain things that he hasn't, dude,
- 6:22Speaker 1: that Rory has done, and it's not even close. I
- 6:26Speaker 1: wondered if you could expand on that a little bit.
- 6:31Speaker 6: Yeah, So, so Phil and Rory each have six major
- 6:33Speaker 6: championship victories. The difference there is Phil can never win
- 6:38Speaker 6: US Open, you know, magnified the flaws in his game.
- 6:41Speaker 6: Rory has a US Open, so advantage Rory. You know,
- 6:44Speaker 6: Phil has more PGA Tour victories, but Rory's won all
- 6:49Speaker 6: around the world, you know, a dozen times in Europe alone,
- 6:53Speaker 6: so that kind of nets out. But you know, Michelson
- 6:56Speaker 6: never got to world number one. Rory spent you know,
- 7:00Speaker 6: two years there. Micholson never won a money title. McElroy's
- 7:05Speaker 6: won three in the US and seven in Europe. Micholson
- 7:09Speaker 6: was a horrendous writer cup player, and McElroy's gonna go
- 7:12Speaker 6: down as the winningest writer cupper ever. So in my mind,
- 7:18Speaker 6: you know, Rory's far surpassed Phil, and it's just like
- 7:21Speaker 6: you surpassed Trevino and Faldo, who each have six majors
- 7:26Speaker 6: as well, because of Rory's global impact, because of all
- 7:29Speaker 6: the places he's won, his longevity. So uh, you know,
- 7:34Speaker 6: there's a lot of intangibles that you can point to
- 7:38Speaker 6: with Macroy, even you know, winning two players championships, and
- 7:41Speaker 6: it's clearly become a very important golf tournament. So it's
- 7:45Speaker 6: he has an incredible resume and it's only getting, you know,
- 7:49Speaker 6: more glittering.
- 7:51Speaker 2: I was. I was thinking about this today.
- 7:54Speaker 1: If you keep writing books about golfers, Alan, you're not
- 7:59Speaker 1: gonna have anybody else to talk to when you're covering
- 8:03Speaker 1: tour events.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Well, you know that.
- 8:07Speaker 6: It's funny because you know, Rory was a little spiky
- 8:10Speaker 6: during the reporting of this book. It got in his
- 8:13Speaker 6: head a little bit. We had we he kind of
- 8:17Speaker 6: threw some f bombs at me on the driving range
- 8:18Speaker 6: in the US Open.
- 8:19Speaker 2: We wrote about that.
- 8:21Speaker 6: It's all in the book. But there's a happy ending
- 8:23Speaker 6: because when he came to Pebble Beach for the tournaments
- 8:27Speaker 6: here and I live nearby, I gave Rory's manager a
- 8:32Speaker 6: couple of copies of the book and Rory publicly thanked
- 8:36Speaker 6: me for that in front of the whole press corps.
- 8:38Speaker 6: And that was I think a little bit of a
- 8:42Speaker 6: public bearing of the hatchet. But then on Sunday night,
- 8:45Speaker 6: when I was walking to my car, I bumped into
- 8:48Speaker 6: Rory just randomly. He was dark, the whole place had
- 8:50Speaker 6: cleared out, but he told me he started reading the
- 8:54Speaker 6: book and he liked it and made him laugh, and
- 8:57Speaker 6: you know, the forward, the beginning of the book has
- 8:59Speaker 6: some of the spiciest materials. Yes, I'm in a good
- 9:02Speaker 6: place for Rory, but you know, ultimately, that's not the
- 9:06Speaker 6: audience I care about. I write for the fans. I
- 9:09Speaker 6: write for the people at home. But on a human level,
- 9:12Speaker 6: it's nice that he's pleased with the book, But I
- 9:15Speaker 6: was always going to write the book I wanted to write,
- 9:16Speaker 6: And if you hated it, I would have been okay
- 9:18Speaker 6: with that because I ultimately I think I treated him
- 9:21Speaker 6: very fairly. I think it's a feel good book. I
- 9:22Speaker 6: think I captured why so many people root for Rory
- 9:26Speaker 6: and why they care about him, And so I'm glad
- 9:29Speaker 6: he could see that. You know, it really is kind
- 9:31Speaker 6: of a feel good story.
- 9:33Speaker 1: Even though you've covered him for a long time and
- 9:36Speaker 1: you knew stuff about him, What was there other things
- 9:40Speaker 1: that surprised you as you researched this.
- 9:42Speaker 2: Book allan Oh?
- 9:44Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean every chapter I learned new things. It
- 9:47Speaker 6: was new revelations. And there's not the earthquakes like in
- 9:52Speaker 6: the Mickelson book, because Rory doesn't have doesn't have those
- 9:56Speaker 6: kind of you know, demons really he it's his has
- 10:00Speaker 6: been mostly a life well lived. I mean, there's he's
- 10:03Speaker 6: had some controversy in his business life and his love life.
- 10:06Speaker 6: That's all in the book because it has to be.
- 10:08Speaker 6: It's just this the totality of his life. But ultimately,
- 10:13Speaker 6: I think he's had himself a lot of grace in
- 10:15Speaker 6: the uh, in the public eye. And but yeah, I mean,
- 10:19Speaker 6: you know, the first time I ever saw Rory swing
- 10:22Speaker 6: of golf Club was the two thousand and seven Open Championship.
- 10:24Speaker 6: He was a few months from turning pro. But his
- 10:28Speaker 6: whole journey up to that point I kind of missed,
- 10:31Speaker 6: and even his first three years when he played almost
- 10:33Speaker 6: exclusively in Europe. I heard, I heard his name. I
- 10:36Speaker 6: knew he was a great young talent, but I hadn't
- 10:38Speaker 6: I wasn't fully tuned into his story at that point.
- 10:41Speaker 6: So I learned so much in the research and in
- 10:44Speaker 6: the you know, the hundreds of interviews I did, and
- 10:47Speaker 6: going back to his hometown, and so yeah, I think,
- 10:53Speaker 6: you know, my role is to people know the broad
- 10:55Speaker 6: strokes of Rory's life. I need to give it context.
- 10:58Speaker 6: I need to give it uh fresh material, new new thoughts,
- 11:03Speaker 6: new reporting, new ways to look at this whole journey
- 11:07Speaker 6: he's been on, and so basically, you know what I'm
- 11:10Speaker 6: hearing from from readers now the book's been out in
- 11:11Speaker 6: the wild for a while, like they really have learned
- 11:14Speaker 6: a lot about him. So that's gratifying because that's ultimately,
- 11:17Speaker 6: you know, the mandate for a book like this, Like
- 11:19Speaker 6: I'm not just gonna take a bunch of newspaper stories
- 11:22Speaker 6: and rewrite them. I mean, I've spent a year and
- 11:25Speaker 6: a half researching this and doing interviews, and that's what
- 11:28Speaker 6: people want is to learn something new.
- 11:31Speaker 2: I don't want to talk in broad strokes, but but
- 11:36Speaker 2: this is.
- 11:36Speaker 1: The guy that grew up with not a lot with
- 11:40Speaker 1: blue collar parents, did he not?
- 11:43Speaker 6: Oh yeah, I mean it's an incredible rags to riches story.
- 11:48Speaker 8: You know.
- 11:48Speaker 6: Jerry McElroy, Rory's dad. He'd get up in the morning
- 11:51Speaker 6: and leave at seven am. I mean he'd go serve
- 11:55Speaker 6: as the janitor at this rugby club, and then at
- 11:58Speaker 6: noon he would go to the local golf club serve
- 12:01Speaker 6: as a bartender and a waiter.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Hollywood.
- 12:04Speaker 6: He'd run, he'd run home for dinner. Then he'd go
- 12:06Speaker 6: back to the rugby club and serve as a bartender
- 12:08Speaker 6: until midnight and as soon as he got home, Rory's
- 12:13Speaker 6: mom Rosie, would walk out the door and take the
- 12:15Speaker 6: graveyard shift at this local factory packing boxes. Like you
- 12:19Speaker 6: can't imagine a more like mind numbing task you all
- 12:22Speaker 6: night than just packing boxes. But they did this because
- 12:26Speaker 6: they were kind of haunted by this feeling that their
- 12:28Speaker 6: son had an incredible talent and they had to do
- 12:32Speaker 6: everything they could to give him the opportunity to be
- 12:34Speaker 6: to compete against the best players and and and see
- 12:37Speaker 6: what great courses look like, and have the most up
- 12:40Speaker 6: to date equipment and just give him a chance. And
- 12:44Speaker 6: you know, from this blue collar family and this war
- 12:48Speaker 6: torn land in Northern Ireland, and you know, for Rory
- 12:53Speaker 6: to become the king of like the most patrician of
- 12:57Speaker 6: all sports, like it it's really it's really an credible story.
- 13:01Speaker 1: Uh. They were the only Catholic family in the area,
- 13:08Speaker 1: did I Did I get that right? During what they
- 13:13Speaker 1: called the troubles in Northern Ireland?
- 13:17Speaker 6: Yeah, not the only ones, but they were Catholic in
- 13:19Speaker 6: Northern Ireland, which was heavily Protestant. And you know, that's
- 13:24Speaker 6: been a shadow over the entire family's life. You know,
- 13:27Speaker 6: Rory's great uncle was assassinated because he was a Catholic.
- 13:31Speaker 6: Catholic and a Protestant town. He moved neighborhoods and Rory's mom, Rosie,
- 13:39Speaker 6: there were so many murders and bombings they came it
- 13:42Speaker 6: came to be known as murder Town. That was the
- 13:45Speaker 6: grim nickname. So this has been a shadow over Rory's life.
- 13:49Speaker 6: He was eight years old when the Good Friday Agreement
- 13:51Speaker 6: was signed that that ended the troubles and the violence,
- 13:55Speaker 6: but the tension has always been there. It's it's part
- 13:59Speaker 6: of why he's such a global citizen, Like he understands
- 14:04Speaker 6: life is complex and he's had to learn how to
- 14:06Speaker 6: navigate these really challenging political environments. And you know, a
- 14:12Speaker 6: lot of these a lot of the golfers he's competing against,
- 14:14Speaker 6: they grew up in affluence and these private clubs, and
- 14:18Speaker 6: they're not really in touch with the real world. I mean,
- 14:20Speaker 6: Rory's seen it, he's lived it. He has that feeling
- 14:24Speaker 6: of otherness and so it's given him such a broad perspective.
- 14:29Speaker 6: And and as you know, the mclroy is like the
- 14:32Speaker 6: finer things in life that Rory has, the jets and
- 14:35Speaker 6: the mansions and the cars, and you know, Jerry McElroy
- 14:38Speaker 6: always has a very fancy watts and but but they've
- 14:42Speaker 6: never forgotten where they came from and they they still
- 14:44Speaker 6: have that that small town, blue collar sensibility. And I
- 14:49Speaker 6: think that's why Rory is such an appealing character, because
- 14:52Speaker 6: there is a humility and there is a gratitude that's
- 14:55Speaker 6: rare for any any professional athlete, let alone you know,
- 14:59Speaker 6: a hall of fame. And so that's why the back
- 15:02Speaker 6: Roys are welcome everywhere they go because they're just keep down,
- 15:05Speaker 6: They're just they're just solid people.
- 15:07Speaker 1: He made a statement that I think he came to
- 15:10Speaker 1: regret one time when he said, sometimes I feel more
- 15:13Speaker 1: British than Irish.
- 15:16Speaker 6: Yeah, that quote has shadowed Rory. And but again, you know,
- 15:20Speaker 6: Northern Ireland is a member of the British Empire, and
- 15:24Speaker 6: he grew up watching BBC. He the currency was pounds sterling.
- 15:29Speaker 6: You know, that was just his life. And it wasn't
- 15:32Speaker 6: until he became a teenager and he started traveling all
- 15:35Speaker 6: over Ireland and he really spent time in the Republic
- 15:38Speaker 6: of Ireland, which is Catholic and which is completely separate
- 15:41Speaker 6: from the British Empire. And so you know, he was
- 15:44Speaker 6: just being honest. But there's certainly people, you know, there's
- 15:48Speaker 6: old timers in the Republic of Ireland will never forgive
- 15:51Speaker 6: Rory for saying that. But you know they're they're missing
- 15:56Speaker 6: the point here. I mean, Rory's become an incredible ambassador
- 15:58Speaker 6: for all of Ireland. He he represented the Republic of
- 16:02Speaker 6: Ireland in the Olympics. You know, that was a choice
- 16:04Speaker 6: he made. He could have gone for Great Britain, but
- 16:06Speaker 6: he chose Ireland. You know, on the cover of my book,
- 16:09Speaker 6: he's wearing a green shirt. Yeah, that's that was the
- 16:12Speaker 6: Olympic uniform for Ireland. So I think Rory has done
- 16:17Speaker 6: a lot to heal the divisions. And you know, it's
- 16:19Speaker 6: a cliche that sports can bring people together, but it
- 16:23Speaker 6: just happens to it's just true. And so you know,
- 16:27Speaker 6: he he is part of this new generation that usually
- 16:31Speaker 6: the first generation on that island who's ever have known peace.
- 16:35Speaker 6: And so he's a symbol of how you can move
- 16:37Speaker 6: between both cultures and both both heritages. And I give
- 16:42Speaker 6: a lot of credit. It's never been easy for him,
- 16:44Speaker 6: but I think he's handled it with a lot of grace.
- 16:47Speaker 1: The book is called Rory, We're Visiting with Alan Ship
- 16:50Speaker 1: Knock and Alan. One of the one of the things
- 16:52Speaker 1: you write about that I think in DearS Rory to
- 16:57Speaker 1: fans is he can be brutally honest and is not
- 17:02Speaker 1: afraid to say whatever he's feeling, sometimes publicly.
- 17:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:08Speaker 6: I mean that's also a rare quality, you know in Superstars.
- 17:12Speaker 1: Wait, we didn't get that from Tiger, by the way, No, No,
- 17:17Speaker 1: thirty years of Tiger word salads where he didn't say
- 17:20Speaker 1: anything that.
- 17:21Speaker 6: No, there was no there's a lot of words, there
- 17:22Speaker 6: was no content. And Rory wears his heart on his
- 17:26Speaker 6: sleeve and he will take strong stands on political issues.
- 17:30Speaker 5: You know.
- 17:30Speaker 6: We saw this in sort of this battle for the
- 17:33Speaker 6: soul of professional golf between the PGA Tour and Live Rory.
- 17:39Speaker 6: He put it. He put it out there. You know,
- 17:40Speaker 6: he became the spokesman not only for the tour, but
- 17:43Speaker 6: a lot of people would say for the entire sport.
- 17:45Speaker 1: I mean, he was the target. The target was on
- 17:48Speaker 1: his back. He became the spokesman, didn't he.
- 17:51Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure, I mean it came. It came at
- 17:53Speaker 6: a cost. But he has a very strong, you know,
- 17:56Speaker 6: moral compass. And three years before it, Live Golf Lawn
- 18:01Speaker 6: the Saudis first began getting into pro golf with something
- 18:05Speaker 6: called the Saudi International and it was a tournament on
- 18:08Speaker 6: the European Tour, and the first one was held in
- 18:13Speaker 6: January of twenty nineteen. That was three months after Jamal Kashogi,
- 18:17Speaker 6: who was a resident of the United States and who
- 18:19Speaker 6: worked at Washington Post, was assassinated by the government of
- 18:22Speaker 6: Saudi Arabia, and the entire Western world was distancing themselves
- 18:28Speaker 6: from the Saudis, cutting off diplomatic ties, ending business relationships.
- 18:34Speaker 6: But the golf if they were the only allies that
- 18:38Speaker 6: the Saudis had. They played that tournament and many top
- 18:40Speaker 6: Americans showed up because they were paid millions of dollars
- 18:43Speaker 6: to do it. And Rory was offered the biggest appearance
- 18:46Speaker 6: fee and he said, and he turned it down, and
- 18:48Speaker 6: he said, I think there's a morally to this. He
- 18:50Speaker 6: didn't want their money, and he said, I want to
- 18:52Speaker 6: be on the right side of history. And he's walked
- 18:55Speaker 6: the walk. I mean, he could have gotten half a
- 18:57Speaker 6: billion dollars easily from live but he venerates the institutions
- 19:02Speaker 6: of the PGA Tour and the European Tour, and he
- 19:04Speaker 6: wanted to be the guy who helped save it, you know,
- 19:07Speaker 6: not tear down all this tradition and all this all
- 19:10Speaker 6: this legacy.
- 19:11Speaker 8: And so.
- 19:13Speaker 6: You know, I think Rory's been an incredible leader for
- 19:15Speaker 6: the sport. And he definitely lost some fans in their
- 19:19Speaker 6: battle because you know, he did turn into a little
- 19:22Speaker 6: bit of a troll, like he loved taking shots to
- 19:24Speaker 6: Greg Norman at Phil Micholson and guys like that who
- 19:28Speaker 6: went to you know, we're the driving forces of live golf.
- 19:31Speaker 6: But he has no regrets. I mean, I think in
- 19:34Speaker 6: his heart he knows that he's doing the right thing.
- 19:36Speaker 6: And and because of his leadership, I mean, the PGA
- 19:39Speaker 6: Tour has won this war, Like the war's over. The
- 19:44Speaker 6: tour won, and Rory's been a huge part of that.
- 19:49Speaker 2: How has he generally perceived among as fellow golfers? Do
- 19:52Speaker 2: you think.
- 19:54Speaker 6: Generally they love him? Because Roy has that common touch
- 19:57Speaker 6: like if if you're some rookie and you win the Porter,
- 20:00Speaker 6: you go open, you know, kind of a B list tournament,
- 20:02Speaker 6: no one's really paying attention. Rory will come find you
- 20:05Speaker 6: on the range and shake your hand and take congratulations
- 20:07Speaker 6: because he remembers when he was a young player and
- 20:12Speaker 6: the big names in the game did that for him,
- 20:15Speaker 6: and he likes to carry those traditions forward. He just
- 20:19Speaker 6: has a human touch.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Now.
- 20:22Speaker 6: Part of his advocacy for the PGA Tour was reshaping
- 20:27Speaker 6: it into a better product. You know, it never made
- 20:29Speaker 6: sense that the PGA Tour had fifty tournaments, yeah, but
- 20:34Speaker 6: that the tour the biggest stars only play twenty of them.
- 20:37Speaker 6: It devalued the products and to battle live golf, they
- 20:42Speaker 6: had to get more money to the top players, and
- 20:44Speaker 6: so they you know, Rory helped create the signature events
- 20:49Speaker 6: model where smaller fields, huge purses, all the best players
- 20:54Speaker 6: show up and compete, and it's been a home run.
- 20:56Speaker 6: The TV ratings are through the roof and no because
- 21:00Speaker 6: the top players are now making so much money that
- 21:02Speaker 6: no one's gone to live golf since John Rahm in
- 21:04Speaker 6: twenty twenty three. So it works. But if you're kind
- 21:09Speaker 6: of a journeyman who's just trying to hang on, like,
- 21:12Speaker 6: there's going to be fewer playing opportunities for you this
- 21:15Speaker 6: year and especially next year, and so you hear some
- 21:18Speaker 6: grumbling about Rory from some of the players, but those
- 21:23Speaker 6: are the guys who are at the bomb of the
- 21:24Speaker 6: money list and the ones who drive the sport, the
- 21:27Speaker 6: ones who drive the interest like they're thankful because he's
- 21:29Speaker 6: made their lives significantly better. So I would say in general,
- 21:33Speaker 6: Rory is wildly popular with his peers, but he does
- 21:37Speaker 6: have his detractor. It's not really personal, it's professional, you right.
- 21:42Speaker 1: That he's been around now twenty years, so he's he's
- 21:46Speaker 1: into his second generation of golfers.
- 21:48Speaker 2: Right. He was bad like.
- 21:50Speaker 1: Tiger when he came up, and now it's Des Chambeau
- 21:53Speaker 1: and other and Scotty and other guys.
- 21:55Speaker 2: On the tour.
- 21:57Speaker 6: I mean it's really third generation because he you know,
- 21:59Speaker 6: Rory had battle Tiger and Phil and VJ and Ernie
- 22:03Speaker 6: Ernie Els, and then you had this next group who
- 22:06Speaker 6: came in. It was Dustin Johnson, it was Jordan Spieth
- 22:10Speaker 6: and Brooks Koepka and Justin Thomas and guys like that.
- 22:13Speaker 6: And now there's this whole new generation, the Ludwig be
- 22:16Speaker 6: Bears and all these young kids, and Roy he's beating
- 22:19Speaker 6: them all. He's literally dominated three different generations. It's absolutely incredible.
- 22:26Speaker 6: His longevity has not talked about enough because he's basically
- 22:32Speaker 6: turned pro. He was just past the seventeenth he was
- 22:36Speaker 6: seventeen years old when he decided to turn pro. And
- 22:38Speaker 6: so you know he's thirty six now, but he's really
- 22:41Speaker 6: twenty years into his career. And you know, Michelson was
- 22:44Speaker 6: kind of a gold standard for longevity. You know, he
- 22:46Speaker 6: basically was a leading figure in the sport for three
- 22:50Speaker 6: decades and I have no doubt that Rory is going
- 22:53Speaker 6: to going to do the same thing because he takes
- 22:56Speaker 6: great care of himself. He has kind of this long, long,
- 23:00Speaker 6: languid swing that those are the ones that hold up
- 23:03Speaker 6: and the short, violent ones don't last as long. And
- 23:06Speaker 6: he's never had a serious injury other than when he
- 23:09Speaker 6: was playing soccer with his buddies, and so you know,
- 23:13Speaker 6: he's importantly. Rory cares deeply about his place in history
- 23:19Speaker 6: and his legacy in the sport, and he's highly motivated,
- 23:24Speaker 6: Like he wants the Crown Jewels. He wants to win
- 23:27Speaker 6: an Open Championship at Saint Andrews. He wants to win
- 23:29Speaker 6: a US Open at Pedal Beats, he wants to win
- 23:32Speaker 6: and Open at Royal Port Rush, you know in Northern Ireland,
- 23:35Speaker 6: and so and I thought it was so interesting, you know,
- 23:39Speaker 6: he had a little swoon after last year's Masters, but
- 23:43Speaker 6: he found his passion. It was kind of rekindled at
- 23:46Speaker 6: the Irish Open when he stormed back and eagled a
- 23:48Speaker 6: last hole and he won a playoff, and I thought
- 23:51Speaker 6: his comments were so important. He said it wasn't about him.
- 23:54Speaker 6: He said, I'm just so happy I could do it
- 23:56Speaker 6: for these fans and you know, I could just give
- 23:59Speaker 6: them what they wanted. And it was almost like he realizes,
- 24:01Speaker 6: like it's not a it's not a lonely individual pursuit anymore,
- 24:05Speaker 6: Like he carries the hopes of Tall of Ireland, the
- 24:09Speaker 6: whole golf world, the good will of the fans, like,
- 24:13Speaker 6: and he knows he's playing for something bigger, Like he's
- 24:15Speaker 6: a once in a lifetime talent. He wants to maximize that.
- 24:19Speaker 6: He wants to do so much in this sport and
- 24:22Speaker 6: really leave a legacy. And so I think that that
- 24:26Speaker 6: that bodwell for his longevity, because it's it's not just
- 24:29Speaker 6: about him anymore, it's something bigger. And I think that's
- 24:31Speaker 6: what gets him out of bed to practice. And you know,
- 24:34Speaker 6: there's a lot of discourse around how much he came
- 24:36Speaker 6: up to Augusta to prepare for this year's Masters, and
- 24:41Speaker 6: that's awesome. It just shows how much he cares, Like
- 24:44Speaker 6: he could have just closed forever after winning the Sear
- 24:47Speaker 6: Grand Slam, but he threw his heart into preparing and
- 24:51Speaker 6: he he went that extra mile. And it's like, you
- 24:54Speaker 6: know the val Victorian who's got one fight, you know,
- 24:56Speaker 6: another test their senior year, they're still up at midnight
- 24:59Speaker 6: studying because they just care that much. Like that's Rory
- 25:01Speaker 6: and you have to commend that.
- 25:04Speaker 2: You don't think he's through, do you? Not a long shot?
- 25:08Speaker 1: No?
- 25:08Speaker 6: No, He's got a lot of golf in him. And
- 25:12Speaker 6: you know there's things that are not on the radar
- 25:14Speaker 6: screen of the average fan. But Colin Montgomery won eight
- 25:17Speaker 6: money titles in Europe. Rory has seven. He wants to
- 25:21Speaker 6: get to at least nine. He's two and a half
- 25:25Speaker 6: points away from third on the all time Ryder Cup
- 25:29Speaker 6: points list. He would like to keep ascending that list.
- 25:33Speaker 6: Finis the modern Ryder Cup began. Lee Westwood is the
- 25:39Speaker 6: winningest player. His team has won seven Ryder Cups. Rory's
- 25:42Speaker 6: been on six winning sides. He'd like to get to eight.
- 25:45Speaker 6: Like these are things that drive him, that have meaning
- 25:48Speaker 6: for him and more power to him, you know, Like.
- 25:55Speaker 1: The book is called Rory Alan Schipknok wrote it. I
- 26:00Speaker 1: can't thank you enough for the time. Congratulations on the book.
- 26:04Speaker 1: I really enjoyed it. Congratulations on the timing of the book.
- 26:08Speaker 1: That's even better.
- 26:10Speaker 6: Well, you know, it's not about me. I'm I'm just
- 26:14Speaker 6: happy to give fans something to read when they're in
- 26:16Speaker 6: the in the bathroom. You got you gotta know your
- 26:19Speaker 6: role in this life.
- 26:22Speaker 2: I know.
- 26:22Speaker 6: But I am proud of the book and you should be.
- 26:24Speaker 6: We're enjoying it.
- 26:26Speaker 1: Who do you, hey, I hate doing this when when
- 26:29Speaker 1: a book is just out. You've done all this work.
- 26:31Speaker 1: But who would you like to do next?
- 26:35Speaker 6: Well, I already know. So have you read Golf in
- 26:39Speaker 6: the Kingdom?
- 26:40Speaker 9: Yes?
- 26:41Speaker 6: Yeah, so Michael Murphy is the author, and that book
- 26:44Speaker 6: came out fifty five years ago and it's as beautiful
- 26:47Speaker 6: now as it was then, and it's one of the
- 26:50Speaker 6: best selling golf books of all time. Michael Murphy and
- 26:53Speaker 6: I went to the same middle school, we went to
- 26:55Speaker 6: the same high school. We're from the same hometown. He's
- 26:58Speaker 6: now ninety five, but he is a razor sharp, like
- 27:03Speaker 6: his brain is an absolute supercomputer, and he's just become
- 27:07Speaker 6: a good friend. And I go open and he lives
- 27:09Speaker 6: north of San Francisco. I drive up to his house
- 27:11Speaker 6: and we spend all day together and I record our conversations.
- 27:14Speaker 6: And so it's gonna be a little bit of a
- 27:16Speaker 6: biography because he's had an extraordinary life and he's a
- 27:22Speaker 6: man on the mountaintop. Because he also co founded something
- 27:24Speaker 6: called the Esslin Institute in Big Sur in nineteen sixty two,
- 27:28Speaker 6: which was the first mind, body, metaphysical, human potential kind
- 27:33Speaker 6: of retreat center. And so he has been friends with
- 27:37Speaker 6: all the gurus and all the saints and all the sinners,
- 27:40Speaker 6: and all the writers and all the thinkers, and so,
- 27:43Speaker 6: you know, all of life's big questions. He's spent his
- 27:46Speaker 6: he's been pondering, and he's been talking to really brilliant people.
- 27:50Speaker 6: So he kind of has the wisdom of the ages.
- 27:53Speaker 6: And I think it's going to be a really fun,
- 27:55Speaker 6: interesting book. It's it's not a golf book, but sure
- 27:58Speaker 6: it's golf adjacent. You know, that's what people know him
- 28:01Speaker 6: for in our world.
- 28:02Speaker 1: But he's he's one of one.
- 28:05Speaker 6: He's an absolutely incredible character. So I'm already working on that.
- 28:08Speaker 6: And I said, the guy's ninety five. There's a little
- 28:11Speaker 6: there's a little urgency so fast type fast.
- 28:13Speaker 2: Alan, thank you so much. Really enjoyed the.
- 28:16Speaker 6: Time, my pleasure. Thanks so much for having me yep
- 28:19Speaker 6: Alan ship knot.
- 28:20Speaker 2: The book is called Rory.

- 31:30Speaker 1: I had his brother. He was ninety six. By the way,
- 31:33Speaker 1: he lived a long, full life. He and his brother,
- 31:37Speaker 1: Marty Croft had the puppets. I had Marty on the
- 31:41Speaker 1: show and it's probably been about three or four years ago.
- 31:44Speaker 1: He was a delightful, elderly gentleman, as you would suspect.
- 31:52Speaker 1: They had their own obviously production company. It was a
- 31:57Speaker 1: family business and they were extremely successful.
- 32:03Speaker 2: Let's put it that way. So, like I said, ninety
- 32:08Speaker 2: six years young.
- 32:10Speaker 1: For that.
- 32:12Speaker 2: Now.
- 32:13Speaker 1: We have talked about the Rock and Roll Hall of
- 32:15Speaker 1: Fame repeatedly over the years, when they you know, nominate people.
- 32:20Speaker 1: Here's the list that did not make it, okay this year.
- 32:25Speaker 1: Those that did not make the cut the Black Crows,
- 32:28Speaker 1: Mariah Carey, Melissa Etheridge, Lauren Hill. Stop me if you've
- 32:35Speaker 1: heard of rock and Roll AX so far in excess,
- 32:38Speaker 1: Pink Shakira.
- 32:41Speaker 5: Okay, I don't know if Shakiro was even on the list.
- 32:44Speaker 1: I didn't either. Here are the ones that will be inducted.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Announced during a live broadcast last night, which I didn't
- 32:58Speaker 1: know about. The chosen group called from a cop a
- 33:03Speaker 1: crop of seventeen hopefuls, ten appearing.
- 33:06Speaker 2: On the ballot for the first time.
- 33:08Speaker 1: Phil Collins, No Problem, Billy Idol, Iron Maiden, Oasis, Chardai.
- 33:22Speaker 2: When's the last time you thought about Chardy?
- 33:27Speaker 5: Right now?
- 33:27Speaker 2: Okay?
- 33:29Speaker 1: Luther Van Dross and he's not rock and roll. I
- 33:32Speaker 1: love him, love his music. Wu Tang Wu Tang Clan.
- 33:40Speaker 1: When's the last time you thought of Wu Tang Clan
- 33:45Speaker 1: and Joy Division Slash New Order. Now we looked that
- 33:50Speaker 1: up the last time we talked about this, Did we not?
- 33:53Speaker 1: I think I think we did.
- 33:54Speaker 5: We listened to some of them had.
- 33:56Speaker 2: Yeah, we had to go. I'm sorry, I don't know this.
- 33:59Speaker 5: What I didn't they had songs?
- 34:03Speaker 2: I knew it was right, right.
- 34:07Speaker 5: I mean I can't be bothered to actually remember.
- 34:09Speaker 2: But no, I get it.
- 34:14Speaker 1: I mean, I'm okay with first three, Phil Collins, Billy Idol,
- 34:17Speaker 1: Iron Maiden, the others not really rock and roll. But hey,
- 34:25Speaker 1: we've we've had that conversation repeatedly, right.
- 34:29Speaker 5: Yeah, and I'm sure we'll have it again next year.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Yes, well we'll have it.
- 34:34Speaker 5: Lost if we're all still around.
- 34:36Speaker 2: Yeah, if we're still here, we'll have the conversation.
- 34:39Speaker 5: So there you go, So you can count on that.
- 34:42Speaker 5: Stick around for a year to find.
- 34:43Speaker 2: Out stick around.
- 34:47Speaker 5: Well, let's talk about the royals, because why not?
- 34:49Speaker 2: Because we can.
- 34:50Speaker 5: But we gotta throw them in we do. As the
- 34:53Speaker 5: Winster's mark one hundred years since Elizabeth's birth on April
- 34:57Speaker 5: twenty first, nineteen twenty.
- 34:58Speaker 2: The next week Big Doings, she.
- 35:02Speaker 5: Defined, modern monarchy remains everywhere in memory and ritual in
- 35:06Speaker 5: India during symbols of the crown, But so too does
- 35:11Speaker 5: her absence.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Yeah, it's been it's been not good since she left.
- 35:15Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 35:16Speaker 5: The family she once held together as navigating a far
- 35:19Speaker 5: more uncertain era marked by illness, estrangement, scandal, and the
- 35:23Speaker 5: pressure of providing the monarch, can still steady itself without
- 35:28Speaker 5: its longing survivor serving anchors. Sorry, she was the calm
- 35:33Speaker 5: in the face of problems. People knew that they could
- 35:36Speaker 5: count on her. Elizabeth did not solve every royal problem
- 35:40Speaker 5: in her lifetime, but she did something few public figures
- 35:44Speaker 5: ever managed. She managed turbulent turbulents. Without her, the monarchy
- 35:51Speaker 5: has appeared more exposed than ever under the mourning pressure
- 35:55Speaker 5: of every truth King Charles Long, the way to Rain
- 35:58Speaker 5: has been repeatedly overtaken by personal and institutional problems. As
- 36:04Speaker 5: we know, Prince William and Kate still navigating the aftershocks
- 36:08Speaker 5: of the Princess of Wales cancer diagnosis. They have been
- 36:13Speaker 5: obviously pushed into a more h a different role essentially.
- 36:17Speaker 5: And then Prince Harry, what another problem, Andrew, Prince Andrew Andrew.
- 36:27Speaker 5: So there's that, But never fear, because Megan Markle and
- 36:34Speaker 5: Harry are living their best life. They're embarking on a
- 36:37Speaker 5: tour of Australia.
- 36:39Speaker 2: How do I get a tour of Australia?
- 36:42Speaker 5: You know, you because you're an ex royal member, or
- 36:48Speaker 5: you marry someone who is I know you're happily married.
- 36:50Speaker 2: So apparently apparently they left their kids with nannies.
- 36:55Speaker 5: Yes, apparently they did not join their parents on the trip.
- 37:00Speaker 5: They have largely kept their children out of the public guy,
- 37:03Speaker 5: only sharing photos and videos that do not show Archie
- 37:06Speaker 5: or Lily's faces.
- 37:09Speaker 2: I hate that, you know.
- 37:11Speaker 1: I think I hope they have a super trip to Australia.
- 37:17Speaker 5: Enjoy your time.
- 37:18Speaker 2: You think they'll have those kids, You think they'll have walkabouts.
- 37:23Speaker 5: Of course everyy you know, Look, Harry may not be
- 37:27Speaker 5: an official royal member anymore, but those walkabouts will stay
- 37:31Speaker 5: with you, Okay.
- 37:35Speaker 2: So I'm excited about this.
- 37:36Speaker 1: Coming up April twenty fourth is the debut of the
- 37:41Speaker 1: new bio pic movie Michael on the Life of Michael Jackson.
- 37:51Speaker 1: Ja'afar rolled into Gary, Indiana, their hometown for a special
