Transcript
- 0:05Hi, good afternoon. Welcome, Miller and Condon on a
- 0:08Monday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 0:10Network. Trent Condon and Ken Miller for
- 0:12the next couple of hours talking sports with you.
- 0:15Thanks for starting your afternoon here with us.
- 0:18Here's what's coming up on our program and our number one, Bill
- 0:21Seals will join us. First of all, he's here about
- 0:2312:20. We'll recap Iowa State's
- 0:27improbable, I think, right? Certainly didn't seem like it
- 0:31was. There was a lot of folks that
- 0:33were picking the clones to watch March into TCU and win.
- 0:36But Campbell did it again. Hats off to him.
- 0:38Bill Seals coming up on football and a basketball game tonight as
- 0:42well as TJ squad takes on Mississippi State over in the
- 0:47western part of the state and we'll get into that with Bill
- 0:49Seals. He'll join us in 20 minutes.
- 0:51Then Scott Doctorman, who covers college football for the
- 0:54athletic. He was at Kinnock Stadium
- 0:56watching Oregon and Iowa. He was, I am guessing my Co host
- 1:00was and we'll get to that in a second hour.
- 1:03Number two, Bam and Bob Trenton. I will recap a pretty good
- 1:05weekend at college football. Dave Cynic and he covers the
- 1:08Packers for his own coverage.com.
- 1:10He'll give us a few minutes on tonight's Monday night matchup
- 1:13between the Packers and the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 1:16Mr. Monday night. We'll pick the game before we
- 1:18get out of here and turn things over and off the bench with Sean
- 1:21and Lucas. They take you from 2:00 until
- 1:235:00. So we'll, I guess we'll start
- 1:26with just the weather at Kennick.
- 1:29Raining miserable. Not as bad as you'd think, it
- 1:33really. It really wasn't and.
- 1:36I thought you'd be like a drown rat.
- 1:38I really did. It was throughout the day, you
- 1:40know, misting sprinkles, a couple of pours here and there.
- 1:44We had a couple of tents set up, though, so they kind of duck
- 1:46under there. I told you this is kind of our
- 1:48biggest tailgate of the year. So a lot of friends that I
- 1:50hadn't seen in a while. So that made it a little better
- 1:52too, you know, having guys like Melton, Rick, Rick's that I
- 1:55don't see very often. So had a couple of those guys
- 1:58there. But yeah, overall during the
- 2:00game, it wasn't nearly as cold as I thought it was going to be.
- 2:04Now, as things started to seep in a little bit deeper and he
- 2:07got into the fourth quarter. But really the coldest moment is
- 2:10when we got back to central Iowa and dropped one of my buddies
- 2:14off at his car and we parked at Prairie Meadows, dropped him off
- 2:18there, just getting out and helping him get a couple of
- 2:20things out of the car. That was by far the coldest.
- 2:22The wind was blowing, yes. At that point in that part.
- 2:25Wasn't as windy in Iowa cities. It was here.
- 2:27At least not in our spot. Okay, so we're over on the east
- 2:29stands, Section 109. And yeah, just in that area.
- 2:32It was not nearly what I thought.
- 2:34Now my wife also came along. And you think no complaints?
- 2:38No, she was excellent. And now the game got out of
- 2:41hand, right. You put it back, she was she was
- 2:43gonna hop into with a another group and they were gonna head
- 2:46early a couple of ways. We're already planning that one
- 2:47out West. But that was not the case as we
- 2:50know and the way it played out. But yes, I was very surprised.
- 2:53I thought it was going to be miserable.
- 2:54Much better than I anticipate. Good stuff.
- 2:57The game itself was it was a really fun game to watch.
- 3:00You know, like last year or a couple years now ago removed
- 3:04from Cooper to Jean and and the fan base having that moment that
- 3:08was and then wasn't obviously kind of felt not to that extent
- 3:11because that was so sudden, obviously with the gene.
- 3:14But the 92 yard drive kind of felt like a moment, right?
- 3:18And it was a moment. And then it was taken away by by
- 3:22Oregon who was able to pull out the football game.
- 3:24Like a lot of folks thought that that that I would could win.
- 3:26We were amongst them and they almost pulled the damn thing off
- 3:29into their, to Oregon's credit, found a way.
- 3:31Just a perfect pass. Just perfect.
- 3:33I don't know what Hall could do differently.
- 3:35I don't know what he could do differently.
- 3:37He was all over legally. Not, not not all over him.
- 3:40Pass interference wise, it was a perfectly thrown ball.
- 3:44I'm not sure how the receiver #4 what's his name?
- 3:46Benson. I'm not sure how he saw it.
- 3:48He was going to talk crap after the game.
- 3:50Was he? Yeah.
- 3:51But But regardless of that, it was a it was a spectacular play
- 3:55that set them up for the ultimately the the game-winning
- 3:58field goal and Oregon stays alive.
- 4:01And I would now probably on the outside looking in.
- 4:03You know, you can say, well, look back for the ball, that
- 4:06that's the only thing. If he looks back for the ball,
- 4:09he might be gone for a touchdown.
- 4:11I mean, it was such an incredible throw.
- 4:14He threw it in the bucket. The coverage was as good as he
- 4:18can have. If he turns back, I don't know
- 4:20if he even sees the ball in time.
- 4:21It like there, there's you're right.
- 4:23There's very little that you can point to him and say, oh, yeah,
- 4:26that's that's the reason you lost it.
- 4:28And credit to that offensive staff, Will Stein and company
- 4:32and that first down play that run the ball because it just
- 4:35seemed like it kept Iowa on the hairs just a touch.
- 4:38Well. Maybe they are going to run, you
- 4:39know. Because they were doing pretty
- 4:40well running. Absolutely.
- 4:42And they were gouging Iowa throughout the course of the
- 4:44game, 261 yards and just bullying them up front, which I
- 4:47think was a surprise. I mean, they're missing the
- 4:49right tackle, they're down a bunch of receivers.
- 4:51He knew what the game plan still was going to be and they were
- 4:54able to do it time in and time out.
- 4:56But I thought that play on 1st down, but they weren't moving
- 4:59real quick either. Like they've been going to get a
- 5:01field goal off. So we had a group of Oregon fans
- 5:03in front of us and when Atticus comes out for the first kick,
- 5:07like this isn't going to go well and he hit three of them and he
- 5:11goes 3 for three and kickers again, guys that have hit issues
- 5:15in their career. Kyle Karardi's hit a couple of
- 5:1750 plus yarders against him. Now here's this guy that has
- 5:19been much maligned by Oregon fans and he's able to do it and
- 5:22knock in yet another one. You know, a whisker here, a
- 5:26whisker there for the people that are just going back to the
- 5:29old line. Well, it's 12 losses in a row
- 5:31against ranked teams. If you think this is in the same
- 5:34ballpark as what we saw in the previous about 10 games now,
- 5:39it's not close. They were non competitive in
- 5:41those games. They were blown out in those
- 5:42games. This one, they're If a what?
- 5:46A coulda A shoulda away from beating two of the 10 best teams
- 5:49in the. Country had them on the ropes.
- 5:51If both of them, it's not the same conversation that we're
- 5:54having when they're getting blown out.
- 5:56Right by by three touchdowns, right?
- 5:58Yeah, No, this isn't the case. This is different.
- 6:00Yes it still stinks to have that losing streak against ranked
- 6:03teams, but it's a completely different conversation.
- 6:06The 12 all-encompassing are not even close.
- 6:08Most do the same. Thing no, this is this is a
- 6:10pretty good football team. Iowa is and they'll head W take
- 6:14on USC. I'll watch the USC game against
- 6:17Northwestern on Friday night. Wasn't blown away by any means.
- 6:20No first half Northwestern was Northwestern was a better team.
- 6:23Oh absolutely by a better fumble on the 1 yard line.
- 6:25Oh boy. Going in, yeah, the USC is a
- 6:29very is this a winnable game for Iowa despite the fact it's going
- 6:32West and I know that doesn't work out well.
- 6:35Most of the time I was stayed. On the other hand, Trent, tip of
- 6:38the cap back Campbell, I don't know how you do it.
- 6:40They're seemingly his tenure at I was, I'm not saying every
- 6:45year, but a handful of times since he's been there, he's
- 6:50taken a team that just looked dead to rights, dead to rights
- 6:54and found a way to win a football game.
- 6:58And that's what they did their secondary.
- 7:01They lost more guys. They were already depleted going
- 7:03into it. And TCU is a really good
- 7:06offensive team, particularly through the air.
- 7:09And some of these young dudes, you have no idea who they are
- 7:12out on the field making plays when you need them.
- 7:15And the play call for by Campbell to go for it when he
- 7:21called the timeout punt team looks like they're coming out.
- 7:24And he decides, you know, well, let's go win the football game.
- 7:26And Rocco Beck pulls that bootleg.
- 7:28Nobody saw it coming. Kind of like when Peyton did it
- 7:30against the the Cowboys that one time.
- 7:32Peyton Manning, nobody saw it coming and the game ends at that
- 7:36point. Carson Hansen, another really
- 7:39good day running the football. The number of drops that
- 7:42continue to plague this receiving core.
- 7:44It's just befuddling to me. It really and truly is.
- 7:47But well done, I state, well done.
- 7:50Your bowl eligible, I thought, and I'm sure a lot of your fan
- 7:53base, maybe they wouldn't admit this thought that you know what,
- 7:55we'll get the bye week cans can be.
- 7:57Thank God Oklahoma State's still on the schedule.
- 7:59There's not going to be any post season and right now I'd sign
- 8:02for Memphis. It's drivable.
- 8:05You can make it a cheaper trip if you want to go right.
- 8:08But now you got bigger, now you got bigger goals, right, Because
- 8:11there's you've got your bowl eligibility and you would have
- 8:14to think that 7 minimum, maybe 8 because Kansas isn't great
- 8:17shakes by any means. But Campbell did it again.
- 8:19John Haycock was unbelievable in that football game with some of
- 8:23his play calls. Just never saw it coming again.
- 8:29I just Flora the punt return. This guy's been, you know,
- 8:33before he got hurt, obviously trending in an upward direction.
- 8:37Then he comes back and they think, God, is this the best we
- 8:39got? And why do we continue to run
- 8:41this kid off for what he saw? Because that was remarkable what
- 8:45he was able to do. He's got a little giddy up to
- 8:46him, doesn't he? He does, yeah.
- 8:49He had some speed over at Adm He.
- 8:50Must have, and obviously it's carried over to the Big 12
- 8:54because those boys were not catching him on that particular
- 8:57play. But well done, Iowa State.
- 8:58In a game where your quarterback goes 9 to 24 yeah throws, 2
- 9:02interceptions, you have to run Carson Hansen a ton.
- 9:06The averages under 4 yards a carry.
- 9:08The other team puts up 319 yards through the air, has another 100
- 9:12plus yards on the ground and you find a way.
- 9:15You bend it, don't break. How do you find a way?
- 9:18Well, I thought one of the biggest numbers here is what
- 9:20they did on 3rd and 4th down. You mentioned the 4th down
- 9:22conversion. That Cap did 8 of 16 on 3rd
- 9:24down, two or three on 4th down. That's how you do it.
- 9:28When the other team double s you up in first downs, you have 15.
- 9:31Pretty good number. They have 30 and you hold them
- 9:35to 17 points. Amazing.
- 9:37It's witchcraft. Yeah, smoking mirrors.
- 9:41It's what we talked about with Haycock and what felt like we
- 9:44were missing at times and doing it with this depleted roster,
- 9:47that is a program victory. That is something well put.
- 9:50That is something that most programs don't do.
- 9:53Nope. I got everybody spayed on.
- 9:55I was throwing dirt on the grave.
- 9:56Oh, absolutely. We're done.
- 9:57I was right there with you. Done.
- 9:59Love TCU Lee in the 6 1/2 yes that's pretty square.
- 10:01Didn't yes, shocked that it didn't go.
- 10:03Over 7 that magic number. Get her while you can.
- 10:06Yes, there was a lot of that last week.
- 10:09Not just here, national people. No, not just here.
- 10:12You're absolutely right. Nationally, big, big spot.
- 10:16Here's the other thing, and I don't know if this came up at
- 10:18the press conference, Campbell going for 2 when Bramer scored
- 10:23the early in the football game, Ben Bramer was not running the
- 10:26football. If you notice it, that from the
- 10:29camper from behind the play, he's got Berkel who had thrown
- 10:33his block and he was trying to slide out into the end zone to
- 10:36his right. I'm convinced and I hope this
- 10:38gets asked him or if it hasn't already been addressed, Bramer
- 10:41was throwing the football to his running mate.
- 10:42It was going to Berkel because you could see him make his cut.
- 10:45He's running through the end zone when obviously the play
- 10:48blew up. But this was not meant for Ben
- 10:50Bramer, who's got these. You know, his bell rung the week
- 10:53before and I was, I was actually surprised because he was in the
- 10:56football game to begin with, but that was not meant for him.
- 10:59I'm convinced of that. Anyways, well done, but well
- 11:02done. Iowa State.
- 11:03Iowa, if it would have, should have again this week.
- 11:06It just. And now the playoff hopes are
- 11:08dead. Yeah, they.
- 11:09I I mean, there's a slim now they're dead.
- 11:11It's so slim. It's so slim.
- 11:12Because there's no quality to those victories.
- 11:14Your best win would be against USC and look at what's happening
- 11:17in the SEC. I can get six teams in. 5 for
- 11:21sure. And I think they're gonna get 6.
- 11:22So does that give Big 12 only one in your scenario?
- 11:26I think so, because I think Texas Tech is just gonna
- 11:28pulverize unless you talk and upset Tech in the championship
- 11:31game, and that's the only team I could see that could do it.
- 11:34And that was a pretty good fight as you mentioned throughout this
- 11:36fall months, I was pretty good fight to the fourth quarter.
- 11:40Final score was not indicative. No, it wasn't I I'm with you.
- 11:43I think you're probably right. ACC is only getting one.
- 11:46I mean that fraud, Virginia. Final Whoa, whoa, whoa.
- 11:48I want you to pump the brakes. Why are they getting one?
- 11:51You. Well, yeah, Why?
- 11:54Well, they got their their champion gets it.
- 11:55Not automatically. It is the top five champions,
- 12:00not 4 automatics. But so they you don't think that
- 12:04necessarily their champion will be ranked higher because right
- 12:07now the the group of five doesn't even represent it in the
- 12:11top 25. Yet, but there is a very real
- 12:14scenario. So let's slow down a second.
- 12:16Yes, yes, yes. Do I have your attention
- 12:17tomorrow night? No, no, because it doesn't
- 12:19matter. Turn into channel.
- 12:20We got a lot of football before it matters.
- 12:23But all right, I'll watch. It I want to lay out this
- 12:25scenario for you. OK, go ahead.
- 12:27Yeah, you're making sense. Go on.
- 12:28The Duke Blue Devils when the ACC could happen, who are still
- 12:31one of the betting favorites. Yes.
- 12:33They have 4 losses. They lost to Yukon.
- 12:37They would finish. Yukons, Yukons.
- 12:38Bowl eligible, then Yukon is fined, but still, we're talking
- 12:41about getting into the College Football Playoff.
- 12:43OK. Are you putting in nine and
- 12:47four? Duke over 11 and 2 South
- 12:50Florida, and 12:00 and 1:00 James Madison.
- 12:55In that scenario, is that who you're putting in the College
- 12:58Football Playoff? Those are your three choices, 9
- 13:00and 4 Duke, 12 and 1 James Madison and 11 and two Tulane,
- 13:06South Florida, Memphis, whoever, whatever those teams finish, and
- 13:09by far the best conference out of the group of five.
- 13:12Who are you putting in there? Who am I putting in there?
- 13:15Who is the committee putting in who?
- 13:17Should they put in there? I want to see it laid out in
- 13:22front of me. I don't have.
- 13:23So we're using Duke. Duke.
- 13:24Alright, let's go through this exercise.
- 13:26Let's use Duke Duke's schedule this year.
- 13:29Their best win is against whom? The Dukies, they have they.
- 13:35Have beaten or they've beaten. I won't even use Elon, NC State,
- 13:39Syracuse, Cal, Clemson. Losses to UConn, Tulane, Tulane,
- 13:48Georgia Tech, who I think will ultimately win it personally,
- 13:53but in your scenario, because Virginia's not even going to get
- 13:55there, Virginia's a fraud. Duke would have to beat
- 13:58Virginia. I think they will.
- 13:59I do too. Win at Carolina.
- 14:01And they're getting better. And then beat Wake at home,
- 14:03which will be a great game, you know, Still.
- 14:06And they win the ACC Championship game against
- 14:07whoever line of Georgia Tech that has a loss to Two Lane.
- 14:12In your scenario, I would put the Group of Five representative
- 14:16in. Both James Madison and the team
- 14:20from the American. No, I think you're only going to
- 14:21get one. I I can't.
- 14:24I I think there'd be a revolt. Well, good.
- 14:28Yeah, yeah, yeah. Good.
- 14:31I mean, we're all for chaos. I don't know.
- 14:34That's, that's interesting, Trent, That is interesting.
- 14:36But one ACC. Yep, Yep.
- 14:39One group of five. One Big 12, probably because I'm
- 14:43with you. I think Texas Tech is just on a
- 14:45different level. Three from the Big 10?
- 14:47Yep, because Oregon Snell now can afford one more loss split
- 14:50against Washington and USC. They'll still be.
- 14:52In and I think they'll probably sweep them personally, but.
- 14:55And then the rest is SEC and the rest is the SEC.
- 15:00We'll talk to Bill Seals on the other side.
- 15:03It's remarkable. Matt Campbell, do it all the
- 15:05time, should learn not to doubt you, but you can't have to.
- 15:10But he did it again. Let's see if we can get another
- 15:13winner. Well, not another winner.
- 15:15Iowa State fans were the winner this weekend.
- 15:17You can head to kxno.com right now.
- 15:19This nationwide contest, it's open this hour.
- 15:22The keyword is check. Your chance to win that $1000.
- 15:26This is the final week of this promotion.
- 15:28This time check at kxno.com. Your chance to win $1000.
- 15:34Take away from the big from the NFL Yesterday was what before we
- 15:37get the Bill Seals take away. From the NFL yesterday, What?
- 15:42What do you have? I have I, I think there are four
- 15:44teams and they both play against each other in two games this
- 15:47week. The winner of the Super Bowl.
- 15:49I'll, I'll, I'll go one step further than this.
- 15:51I will give you 28 teams. You give me Detroit,
- 15:56Philadelphia, Seattle and the Rams.
- 15:59You can have the Chiefs, have the Broncos, have the Colts.
- 16:02I think the Super Bowl winner is an NFC team named one of these
- 16:06Detroit, Philadelphia, LA and Seattle.
- 16:10You're just looking for a different angle now to throw
- 16:12dirt on the Chiefs. No I'm not.
- 16:13I just think these teams are legitimately better.
- 16:16Seattle's legit trend. I'm tired of telling this all
- 16:18the last month. The Rams might be the best team
- 16:20in football. Detroit is their arrows pointing
- 16:23up in Philadelphia. I don't buy Green Bay.
- 16:26I do not buy Green Bay. I don't buy your Bears.
- 16:28Although it's a. Nice.
- 16:30You can't. They're not they're.
- 16:31Not going to win the Super. Bowl.
- 16:32They're not. I don't know if they're going to
- 16:33be in the playoffs. Maybe they'd be in a bunch of
- 16:35garbage. Yeah, maybe.
- 16:36They got a long ways to go. He also tried to sell me on the
- 16:39bills. The bills are bad.
- 16:41Bills are bad. Bills aren't.
- 16:41Win the Super Bowl. Give up the The NFC is going to
- 16:45win the Super Bowl this year. The NFC, all right, putting that
- 16:49bet in. It doesn't pay enough.
- 16:51I know you you like those big prices in your future.
- 16:54Bill Seals next Miller and Condon.
- 16:56Keyword this hour is check. Check cakesando.com.
- 16:59It's the Eye of Sports Radio Network.
- 17:04I'm Nori Condon. Welcome back Iowa sports radio
- 17:07network with you until 2O clock Scott Doctorman from the
- 17:10athletic still to come this hour.
- 17:12Let's get the Bill Seals covers Iowa State for
- 17:15cyclonereport.com, part of the on three media network and Bill
- 17:19joins us. I will get to Mississippi State
- 17:21and Iowa State in a bit. But bill got to start with
- 17:24football and Matt Campbell and company did it again.
- 17:27Just when you thought the season was headed in the wrong
- 17:30direction and certainly had a lot of blinking lights that was
- 17:33headed that way, they were able to go to TCUA team.
- 17:37That's pretty good offense, really good offensively.
- 17:39And for the most part, Yep, they bent, but they didn't break.
- 17:43And Iowa State comes back with a victory and they are bull
- 17:46eligible. And I did not and I'm not alone.
- 17:49See this one coming, Bill. No, I don't think many people
- 17:52did Kenny and and I think it's just a tribute to how this whole
- 17:56program is is built. And you know, I didn't, I don't
- 18:00think it's it's lip service when when Matt talks about how, you
- 18:04know, this is a team that's still together, they're still
- 18:07plugging away, they're still trying to fix mistakes, stuff
- 18:11like that get over the hump. And I think that's that really
- 18:14was the case. I mean that the, the chemistry
- 18:16still there, it's a a very close knit program.
- 18:21And then I think those things you develop in the offseason and
- 18:24and that it pays off in instances like this where they
- 18:27just kept hanging in there and and hanging in there.
- 18:30And I think this was a game that Iowa State needed to to run the
- 18:34ball. I think that we had probably
- 18:35talked about that last week. They needed to run the ball,
- 18:38probably get a couple turnovers and and get the time of
- 18:41possession in their favor. And I think they're they were
- 18:44able to do that and got a big special teams play along along
- 18:48the lines there too. And wow, what a difference Aiden
- 18:53Flora, healthy Aiden Flora makes when he's back out there as
- 18:56well. You mentioned the special teams
- 18:58and that had been such a an issue throughout the time of
- 19:02Matt Campbell. This year's been weird with the
- 19:03Conradry injury and another injury kicker it, but you go
- 19:07back and you think of how many games maybe they left on the
- 19:09field because of special teams. They are more dedicated it feels
- 19:12like to that component. You mentioned Flora and just
- 19:14what they've done. Do you think it was Matt
- 19:16Campbell just looking under the hood a little bit because it
- 19:19does seem like there is a a lot more here these last couple of
- 19:22seasons, a lot more work being done on special teams, not just
- 19:25the specialist, but in terms of return coverage units, all the
- 19:28different parts of special teams.
- 19:30Yeah, that I think that's true. And, and I think also it's
- 19:34having guys to that you can quality guys, Big 12 level guys
- 19:39that you can play on those special teams units as well.
- 19:42And you know, with all the injuries that they sustained,
- 19:45sometimes that I think constrain the, the quality that you can
- 19:49dedicate to, to special teams. So I think there's a lot of guys
- 19:52right now that are playing both offense, special teams, defense
- 19:57and special teams and getting a lot of a lot of reps that way.
- 20:00And I don't think they they've sacrificed the quality of of
- 20:04that group. You know, obviously when Kyle
- 20:06Conradi's back, Jace Gilbert's back kicking off.
- 20:11The coverage units aren't as strained as they they were and
- 20:15you get a big special teams return like that, the first one
- 20:18since Matt Campbell's second season at Iowa State.
- 20:22So I think just a lot of things going right there at that group
- 20:26and a lot of confidence and as well with, you know, having a
- 20:29guy that can come out and make some field goals.
- 20:32And I think Gilbert that that that helps things with Canardi
- 20:36certainly not have to do kickoffs.
- 20:38We saw what, you know, what that circus that turned into toward
- 20:41the midpoint of the season. So yeah, it seems like the tone
- 20:45on special teams a lot different these days.
- 20:47Anything on Berkel? I know he left the I don't think
- 20:51he got back in. I'm pretty sure he didn't and
- 20:54and he and there'll be no press conference this week.
- 20:57So probably nothing till next week or have you heard anything,
- 21:00Bill? Well, what what Campbell said
- 21:03after the game was he thought that Bacon, he thought that big
- 21:08Caleb Bacon would be good to go. He did in that same vein,
- 21:12though, say that they would not know the status of Berkel for a
- 21:15couple days. So I think that extends with as
- 21:19far as the media. We don't have anything this
- 21:21week. So we won't know the status
- 21:23there until next week, probably next Tuesday at the press
- 21:26conference, it'll be brought up. But it didn't, it didn't look
- 21:30good. Kenny, I, I, I would, I, I, I
- 21:33hate to say this, but I'd be very surprised maybe if he
- 21:35hasn't played his last snap of this season, just with two games
- 21:39left to go and just the severity it looked like.
- 21:41And even if it's a strain or something like that, it it's
- 21:44going to be tough to come back from.
- 21:47Looking through the numbers that you put up over at Cyclone
- 21:50Report, you have the grades from PFF and once they jumped out via
- 21:55Ikakula played a snap freshman out of Hawaii.
- 21:59I don't remember this guy at all.
- 22:00Fill us in a little bit here and kind of a guy you can play up to
- 22:04four games and still maintain your red shirt, but just a guy
- 22:06that I just don't even remember seeing a pop up in the
- 22:09participation report. Yeah, he actually was a Stanford
- 22:13commit. Iowa State had recruited him
- 22:17pretty, pretty hard. He, I believe Salt Lake City
- 22:22West High School, they, they had a big probably 10 kids come from
- 22:26there and visit during a spring practice earlier in, in Vayas
- 22:32high school career. They recruited some of those
- 22:35kids and, and he, Ikakula had committed to Stanford.
- 22:40And I think we, we've seen with, you know, how that Stanford
- 22:43programs gone. I think what Baer Bachmeier was
- 22:46committed there and he, he ended up in it in Provo and they maybe
- 22:52saw the writing on the wall a little bit there with that and
- 22:55he flipped to Iowa State later in the process.
- 22:58And yeah, he was one that that Campbell had brought up.
- 23:01I, I believe in, in some of his preseason camp availabilities or
- 23:05maybe it was media day about how Vaya had a chance.
- 23:09I think that they won't take that well, they won't take the
- 23:12red shirt off of him. He's only played in the, I
- 23:15believe the one game now. So he's in, he's in the clear.
- 23:20But I think he's a foundational piece.
- 23:22This offensive line, they lose what, lose 2 tackles?
- 23:26They're going to lose Boniface in side at at center.
- 23:30I think Via is an interior guy, but certainly a foundational
- 23:34piece for the the future in Iowa State.
- 23:36Yeah, I think that sounds, that sounds right here.
- 23:43He is 355 lbs Walters. Yeah, he's, he is.
- 23:48He is. He is filled out, Yeah.
- 23:51I mean, he looks the part right now as a true freshman Big 12
- 23:55offensive lineman. 63355 yeah, that's a guard for sure.
- 24:01Fascinating stuff. Well, good stuff.
- 24:02So obviously nothing this week. You'll we'll we'll find out more
- 24:07on the injury front when they reconvene.
- 24:10Hey, just be just for my my, my own volition here on the two
- 24:14point play, the 2 when when Bramer scored and then they went
- 24:18for two. Do you know what I'm talking
- 24:20about early in the football game?
- 24:21And they did the direct snap to Bramer.
- 24:23Right. He was going to throw the ball,
- 24:26Bill. I'm convinced of that because
- 24:28Berkel, he stayed in the block, then peeled off and was running
- 24:32in the end zone, kind of shadowing Bramer, but they
- 24:35picked it up. Do you know was was?
- 24:37Campbell asked that. He was not actually, it was only
- 24:41about 4 minutes of of video from the post game.
- 24:46That was not something that was alluded to.
- 24:48But I think you, you're probably correct.
- 24:49I mean, they're not that they're probably not going to run too
- 24:53many design sneaks with a direct snap to Bramer.
- 24:57So I think there was something to that and and maybe it just
- 25:00wasn't there and he decided to to take off and run.
- 25:03Gotcha. I want to go over to the
- 25:06defensive side and of course, injuries have hit that defensive
- 25:08backfield so hard. We know that obviously Marcus
- 25:11Neil is an absolute star. I mean, just an absolute stud
- 25:14back there. But some of these young guys,
- 25:15we've been seeing more Van Denter.
- 25:17I go back to that game in August against K State and he's wolfing
- 25:20all over the field and he's definitely been out there more.
- 25:23Is there any of those young safeties that have started to
- 25:25pop a little bit for you saying, oh, I like this kid, I think
- 25:27he's got a chance. Give us a youngster out of that
- 25:30safety group. Well, I I thought that Josh is
- 25:35someone who should have been playing earlier in the season
- 25:38when some of these injuries started to happen.
- 25:41He he's a future star, someone that I actually it was able to
- 25:46catch up with in Jacksonville. I went down to a Rivals
- 25:49Publishers convention last July and he was at the Five Star
- 25:54Challenge. Patterson was was able to catch
- 25:57up with him. You know, he was a guy that
- 25:59could play cornerback, play safety.
- 26:01I think they pervert him a safety.
- 26:03That's where he ended up. And yeah, I mean, he's just got
- 26:06star written all over him and it's going to be a very
- 26:09competitive situation there. I think he he'll start the rest
- 26:13of the way this season. There's no dead mind about that.
- 26:17And then next spring, yeah, gosh, it's going to be a very
- 26:19competitive situation is probably like linebacker.
- 26:23We saw with linebackers so many guys in 2024 played and the
- 26:29competition there in the spring this year.
- 26:32Well, that's going to be the state that the the the at
- 26:35safety. That's going to be the way it is
- 26:37next spring because you know, Patterson, he's got the looks
- 26:40right now of being a three plus your starter as a Cyclone.
- 26:45He's a he's a star in the making.
- 26:48Real quick, Bill, basketball tonight, Mississippi State, I
- 26:51state go over in the western part of the state.
- 26:54Your thoughts on this game? Obviously it'd be nice to get
- 26:56Iowa State a test. Not sure what if if Mississippi
- 26:59State's got a threat in the SEC or not.
- 27:01They've only played one game that I could find.
- 27:04Your thoughts on what what you expect to see tonight?
- 27:08Well, it's going to be the obviously it's going to be the
- 27:11biggest challenge that this team's faced.
- 27:14I I should say in the regular season, that goes without
- 27:17saying. I think the Creighton exhibition
- 27:19matchup, that was a that was a unique challenge at that point.
- 27:24And and yeah, I mean, again, it's tough to say what with
- 27:27Mississippi State just with the one game and so far they did
- 27:32play Houston though in an exhibition that was a nine point
- 27:35loss. So yeah, I mean, you could
- 27:37compare, you could compare scores maybe a little bit there
- 27:41and then open the 24 point win over over North Alabama to open
- 27:45the regular season. So yeah, I think just obviously,
- 27:49you know, Chris Jans teams, it's going to be a physical match up.
- 27:53We're really going to get, I think our first real look at
- 27:57that interior game for Iowa State, how they match up in a
- 28:01game like this. So you know, Josh Hubbard, he,
- 28:04he's got, you know what, 27 points in the opener, 8 assists.
- 28:09I think he's one that that's certainly on the scouting report
- 28:13going into tonight. They didn't really shoot all
- 28:15that well in that game against North Alabama.
- 28:18I think that probably lent itself to being a little closer
- 28:22maybe than than what we saw. Iowa State's two blowouts were
- 28:26in that one, just a not a good shooting performance.
- 28:28Hubbard was probably the best of the lot.
- 28:31A guy gets to the free throw line a lot, 12 times.
- 28:35So, yeah, I mean, we've seen sometimes with Iowa State that
- 28:39that perimeter defense maybe let some guys get by early on.
- 28:44And I think that leads to maybe some of the posts getting into
- 28:46foul trouble. We've seen it with with Buchanan
- 28:49a little bit. So kind of got to get that shorn
- 28:52up. But I I'll tell you what, I did
- 28:53like the three guard lineup that Iowa State rolled out against
- 28:57scrambling. I think that's something that
- 28:59they can really go to when they get into the Big 12.
- 29:03And it's something they're not averse to to play in either.
- 29:05They, as TJ had mentioned, they they have done that in at times
- 29:09and in past seasons. We've got the personnel to do
- 29:12it. Good stuff.
- 29:13Bill Seals, cyclonereport.com, cyclonereport.com, a part of VON
- 29:173 Media. Thank you, Bill.
- 29:18We'll talk to you next Monday. Appreciate it.
- 29:20Looking forward to it guys, have a good one.
- 29:22Good to talk to you, Bill Seals, as we check in on IRA State.
- 29:25And Bill and company over at on three, they broke the store of
- 29:27the story of the commitment today on the basketball front,
- 29:30610 power forward. Is it Euro?
- 29:32He's from France, yes. Dorian, Rinaldo, Coleman, A
- 29:36Comlin and you can find more of that over at Cyclone Report.
- 29:40Dot com, Bill Seals and company over at Cyclone Report.
- 29:43Scott Dockerman from The Athletic joins us next.
- 29:45Miller and Condon talking sports with you on Des Moines Sports
- 29:48Station 106.3 KX&O. I'm Hillary Condon.
- 29:53Welcome back. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
- 29:55Network. Trenton, Ken with you until 2.
- 29:57Let's get right to our friend Scott Dockerman.
- 29:59He covers the college football, the Big 10 for the athletic,
- 30:04athletic. He's got this playoff
- 30:05projections, bowl projections up there.
- 30:07He had a busy week. Just when Saturday night comes
- 30:10and goes, that's when really kicks in for you, isn't it, Doc?
- 30:12Good to talk to you. How are you?
- 30:15Doing well, it's yeah, it's been, it's always interesting
- 30:17when I get done with, as soon as I get done with whatever game
- 30:21I'm covering, if I am covering a game that day, then I got
- 30:24immediately switch over to playoff projections.
- 30:27So I'm one of the last people leaving the press box sometimes
- 30:32just to try to catch in that last late game, which is what I
- 30:36did the other day just to make sure I got try to get it up to
- 30:39date. And of course it's it's
- 30:40worthless because tomorrow night we'll see something different.
- 30:43Yeah, for sure. Your projection has Iowa going
- 30:45back to Tampa place they haven't been in seven years, which feels
- 30:48like a lifetime in the Kirk Fahrens era.
- 30:51And of course, Iowa State you also have in the bowl game now
- 30:53is their bowl eligible, going to the Texas Bowl against Missouri,
- 30:58the nature of bowl projections and of course the playoff
- 31:01projection. We'll get to here in a moment,
- 31:03but just in general, is there a lot of misinformation out there,
- 31:06a lot of people that understand that, look, it's not 2015, This
- 31:10is not nearly as easy as it once was, kind of was slotting these
- 31:13teams in there. Yeah, it's it's a real matrix
- 31:17and especially is now when you get close to the end of a bowl
- 31:21cycle, which is this is year 6 of 6.
- 31:24So there's a lot of rules about, you know, whether Bulls can take
- 31:28the same team multiple years in a row or or once every six years
- 31:34That and you've got to add to that.
- 31:36Plus you've got realignment and you have the PAC 12 legacy
- 31:40portion of it, which they are still going to the same bowls
- 31:44that they were in there in the PAC 12.
- 31:46But and that could be aggravating, I thought.
- 31:48And I know Big 12 fans were irritated possibly last year
- 31:53with the Alamo Bowl where you had two teams in the same
- 31:55conference playing that because they were aligned with, you
- 31:58know, the PAC 12. But, you know, so in Iowa's
- 32:02case, I think naturally what I would say is they they would
- 32:06normally be a Citrus Bowl team, but they've been there twice in
- 32:09the last since 2021. So you've got, you know, there's
- 32:13options there. You know, Michigan hasn't been
- 32:15there for a while. So even if there's a one game
- 32:19difference, say Iowa finishes 9 and three in Michigan, 8 and
- 32:22four or something like that, that they're likely going to go
- 32:25ahead and take Michigan that hasn't been there for a while.
- 32:28And and then you've got to also figure in things like TV ratings
- 32:31and then travel parties, you know, there's just so much and
- 32:36involved. So you've got to take that into
- 32:38consideration. And of course, it all blows up
- 32:40the next week when there's an upset or something.
- 32:42Yeah, I love that fact of college football.
- 32:45Before we get to what you witnessed on Saturday night, and
- 32:47I don't want to talk about the the hedge funds.
- 32:49That's my stuff. Makes my head hurt.
- 32:52I do want to ask you about UCLA though, Doc, because it sounds
- 32:54like they are moving from the Rose Bowl as far as the regular
- 32:57season moving into Sofi, it's still not on campus.
- 33:01Obviously I don't. I'm not.
- 33:03So they haven't solved that problem.
- 33:05I'm surprised you would give up an historic venue like that for
- 33:09Sofi Stadium. I have not been to Sofi.
- 33:11By all accounts, it's it's, it's more than adequate.
- 33:15It's it's some would say a palace.
- 33:17I'm not. I'm not sure since I've never
- 33:18been there, but I was surprised, Doc, that you walk away from the
- 33:21historic Rose Bowl for Sofi Stadium if you're UCLA.
- 33:26Yeah, I and, and the geography there is a little bit
- 33:29challenging because it is, you know, as far as geographic, it's
- 33:34the biggest city in the country and and it takes so long to get
- 33:38from Westwood to Pasadena. It's it's an hour usually.
- 33:43And for their students, they just don't go.
- 33:45And, and so when you look at the Rose, the visiting team pretty
- 33:49much commands the most of the tickets.
- 33:51It's it's amazing because that one day of the year, it's the
- 33:54most magical sight in sports. And then the rest of the year
- 33:58you're looking at it going, nobody's here because it's, and
- 34:01it's really hard to get there. There's like one way in and, and
- 34:06one way out. And it's such a big stadium.
- 34:08So I understand that. And, and they're not, they're
- 34:11not as embedded to the Rose Bowl as you might think.
- 34:14They haven't been playing there for a century or anything.
- 34:16It's really been, you know, I mean, I guess maybe 40 years,
- 34:20which is a lot, but it's not like the Rose Bowl is just down
- 34:23the street. It it's like if if you're going
- 34:26from your campus is in Des Moines and you're playing in in,
- 34:30in Ames or even in farther Webster City or something, it's.
- 34:35Just real. Far, yeah.
- 34:37Yeah, apparently it's 28 miles to the Rose Bowl and it's like
- 34:4015 to Sofi, so this means it doesn't anyways.
- 34:44Yeah, it doesn't work well for anybody, I don't think.
- 34:47But here we are. All right, let's get into the
- 34:49playoff talk. And at the top, pretty clear cut
- 34:52at this point. And we're talking about the
- 34:55awful possibility for the ACC. Duke wins the conference
- 34:58championship and could be left out of the playoff.
- 35:01But I want to move into kind of more of the nuts and bolts, you
- 35:04know, with the posturing that's going to happen here over the
- 35:06next few weeks. What's the high watermark for
- 35:08the SEC? I mean, is there a potential we
- 35:10could have as many as six teams from the SEC that makes up half
- 35:14the field for the College Football Playoff?
- 35:17It's possible, sure. And I think a lot of that has to
- 35:19do with the, the big 10 and wonder what happens there.
- 35:23Because you look at, you know, if, what if I, you know, we, we
- 35:27saw round one of Oregon, Iowa, but you throw USC in there and
- 35:31there's this little round Robin among the three of them.
- 35:33And what if they all go 1:00 and 1:00?
- 35:35And then, you know, Oregon, you know, may, may end up getting in
- 35:38out of that situation if they're 10 and two, But if they get
- 35:41upset by Washington, which I I wouldn't say is likely, but it's
- 35:44possible, then they're probably out.
- 35:47And USC is out, Iowa is out, Michigan is not good enough.
- 35:51And and then all of a sudden you're down to two teams from
- 35:53the big 10 that really fit that or that it only have two losses.
- 35:56And you know, maybe Michigan would get in and under that
- 35:59circumstance, But then you've got to say, hey, well, Oklahoma
- 36:01beat it head to head with, you know, by an 11 point margin.
- 36:05So then, yeah, it's certainly possible that the big, in fact,
- 36:09I would expect right now that the SEC gets probably 5 and and
- 36:15it could morph into six. You know, again, what happens if
- 36:19BYU loses again or something like that or they play Texas
- 36:23Tech again and lose, you know, it, it's just, and, and this is
- 36:27what you're looking at staring forward when they go to 9 games
- 36:31that you're going to probably see some nine and three SEC
- 36:33teams get in. And that's why the, the 16 game
- 36:38or 16 team proposal. You know, people are have been
- 36:42negative on Tony Petiti's situation and you know, wanting
- 36:45all these guarantees. But if you're the Big 12 and
- 36:48you're the ACC, you've got to take that bird.
- 36:51In the hand, without a doubt. Without a doubt.
- 36:54I'm just dumbfounded because I haven't seen you or Mark very
- 36:56few missteps. This seems like one of them.
- 36:59Doc, I couldn't agree with you more.
- 37:02Saturday night, Kinnock Stadium on the heels of earlier this
- 37:06season, Indiana at Kinnock Stadium, if it would have should
- 37:09have seemed like Iowa fans were on the precipice again of having
- 37:13an unbelievable moment, right? 92 yard Dr. capped off by their
- 37:17quarterback that they invested a lot in both emotionally and
- 37:20financially taking into the end zone, giving the Hawks the lead.
- 37:24Kinnock's going crazy only to have the rug pulled out again in
- 37:28in a year that we'll look back. Just those two losses to Indiana
- 37:32and Oregon. If it would have, should have
- 37:34what could have been? Yeah, it's it's pretty painful.
- 37:37I mean, I think both of them because they're both really good
- 37:40opponents. This isn't just they lost, you
- 37:42know, 5 to 4, you know, against the five to four team or
- 37:44something like that. I mean, they both these teams
- 37:46are playoff teams. Indiana is is obviously an
- 37:49outstanding and I think you know this is the frustration of any
- 37:54sports writer in my shoes. I have to write something a
- 37:57headline at the gun. And so I'm writing two different
- 38:01stories. Sports quarter and then Mark
- 38:04Granowski scores. And so then I start going that
- 38:07direction and then, you know, the 24 yard pass from Dante
- 38:12Morda and that was such an amazing pass in the rain, in the
- 38:16wet conditions, one-on-one coverage.
- 38:18TJ Hall was right there. There's it's really you almost
- 38:21have to tip your hat to the to the receiver into the
- 38:24quarterback for that kind of Malik Benson and and Dante Moore
- 38:27for making that happen because you know, less than 30 seconds
- 38:31to go. That kind of a pass is so
- 38:33critical. And and yes, when you look at
- 38:36this game and you look at the Indiana game, every little
- 38:40situation is going to be magnified.
- 38:42You know, in this one, it's the the bad snap on the punt that
- 38:45went for safety or, or, you know, was his, you know, was
- 38:50Kamari Bolton's heel in the end zone or was his toe out outside
- 38:54the end zone when he caught the ball?
- 38:56I mean, it's just, you know, so many, it's a game and then
- 39:00fumble, you know, inside the 20. You know what that could have
- 39:02been. So yes, this is all difficult to
- 39:06process, but, you know, I, I, I would hope that people respect
- 39:11the fact that Oregon's really good.
- 39:12And then Iowa is still pretty good too.
- 39:14And, and it's a tough loss, but it's not one, you know, we got
- 39:19to fire everybody. We got to start over.
- 39:21What's going on here? It's, it's over.
- 39:23You know, I, I would hope people wait until if they lose to
- 39:26Michigan State or Nebraska, then to do that.
- 39:30You would hope that that's the case, but you also know this fan
- 39:33base, Doc, so many close moments and the thing that's kind of
- 39:38people are equating all twelve of these losses against ranked
- 39:40teams all in the same. This is different.
- 39:43I mean, do you see this path in the continuation with the
- 39:46offensive improvements that there is hope?
- 39:48There is hope that yeah, it's not going to happen this year,
- 39:50but a playoff bit it still couldn't happen at Iowa in the
- 39:54next couple of seasons. Sure.
- 39:56I, I, I don't, I, I hate when you, you everybody kind of puts
- 40:00the aggregate together on these types of things.
- 40:02I mean, this is has this isn't even in the same family as the
- 40:05games like against Michigan, for instance, and on the
- 40:08championship games and. You know, Ohio State on the
- 40:11road. I mean, never once did you go
- 40:14into those games, maybe the first one against Michigan.
- 40:16But ever since then, did you say, Oh yeah, they got a shot in
- 40:19this game. I mean, they they got crushed
- 40:21because their offense couldn't do anything.
- 40:23Now their offense is capable of putting together a 92 yard drive
- 40:28that takes up the fourth quarter, converting two fourth
- 40:32down plays, 1/3 and whatever and got a 40 yard pass.
- 40:35I mean, that's something you never would have expected with
- 40:38Deacon Hill. You probably wouldn't have
- 40:39expected with Spencer either. And and yet here you are and
- 40:42you're just in that same situation.
- 40:44It gets really good teams and and I think that's so this one
- 40:49is I chalk it up is just unfortunate.
- 40:52You know, defense didn't make a play when it needed to.
- 40:54Offense made a couple of critical mistakes in a close
- 40:57game, but it's a completely different world than where we
- 41:01were two years ago. Scott Dockman for The Athletic
- 41:03Dock in 10 seconds. What can we look forward to at
- 41:05The Athletic this week? I I'm working on another bowl
- 41:09piece, which is how are the bowls going to adjust with the
- 41:13CSP uncertainty? So that that's something I'm
- 41:17looking right here in another day or so.
- 41:19I were, I were two. Coming up next, Miller and
- 41:21Condon. Thank you, Scott Duckman.
- 41:22More coming up on the other side.
