- 0:03Speaker 1: Wake up.
- 0:05Speaker 1: Good next.
- 0:06Speaker 1: Kicking off your day in the best way, it's Sonia
- 0:09Speaker 1: and Joakim on the shock circuit.
- 0:12Speaker 1: Good morning. Welcome to the show. Thank you for joining
- 0:14Speaker 1: us today. We are this close to the weekend. How
- 0:17Speaker 1: am I awake? Because of the match. My eyes are
- 0:21Speaker 1: at this point, yes. Not the match, 2 matches. Yeah.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Oh my goodness. Fill us in in just a bit.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Stay tuned. Singapore's number 1 hit music station.
- 0:32Speaker 1: Joakim's back from the bathroom. I hope you're doing fine.
- 0:35Speaker 1: I'm alright. You didn't take that long, so yeah, but
- 0:38Speaker 1: I have to say, uh, the couch in the studio
- 0:41Speaker 1: looking mighty comfortable right now. Can you stop? You wait,
- 0:46Speaker 1: can you tell me the truth right now.
- 0:47Speaker 1: Did you go to the restroom to close your eyes
- 0:50Speaker 1: for a while and take a nap? No, no, OK,
- 0:53Speaker 1: just checking up because I know you didn't really sleep
- 0:55Speaker 1: last night. That's the last place I can do it
- 0:58Speaker 1: because I've done it before by accident.
- 1:02Speaker 1: OK, um, there was once, uh, this was a long
- 1:05Speaker 1: time ago, and I've done it on two separate occasions actually.
- 1:08Speaker 1: One in the office, uh, on, on the toilet bowl,
- 1:11Speaker 1: like I put the seat down and I sat down
- 1:13Speaker 1: for a while just contemplating life and how tired I was,
- 1:16Speaker 1: and I closed my eyes and dozed off. The second
- 1:18Speaker 1: one was actually at a club because I had such
- 1:21Speaker 1: a long, I did a morning show, I did like
- 1:23Speaker 1: a whole day of work, then my friends dragged me
- 1:25Speaker 1: out to the party.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I was like, guys, I go to the toilet again.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I took a short break and I put a timer on,
- 1:30Speaker 1: like 3 minutes. I closed my eyes. I just closed
- 1:35Speaker 1: my eyes. It's not, it's, it's what I call um.
- 1:38Speaker 1: NSDR, no sleep, deep rest for three minutes. It's it's
- 1:42Speaker 1: an actual thing. It's an actual thing body hacks. It is.
- 1:46Speaker 1: It's like biohacking thing and um, you know, I felt
- 1:48Speaker 1: ready to go again. I mean, if you don't mind
- 1:50Speaker 1: sharing or maybe tell me off air, how does one
- 1:54Speaker 1: sleep for 3 minutes in the rest.
- 1:56Speaker 1: This room of a club that's stumping music out there
- 1:59Speaker 1: when you're tired, anything is possible. The toilet I smell
- 2:03Speaker 1: like a mixture of human excrement and puke. Uh, thankfully, no,
- 2:06Speaker 1: that this one was quite clean. Yeah, yeah, yeah, and
- 2:09Speaker 1: it was, I think it wasn't that like it wasn't
- 2:11Speaker 1: like 5 a.m., you know, things get very bad, yeah.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Anyway, stick around. We've got some great tracks to keep
- 2:18Speaker 1: you company that might sound better than us talking about
- 2:21Speaker 1: Joakim's stomach issues. Thank you. Yes, so whenever we play
- 2:24Speaker 1: an artist's song on 987, especially this particular one, I
- 2:29Speaker 1: will always say somebody filed a missing report. Where is he?
- 2:32Speaker 1: Because he blew up. He was on so many campaigns.
- 2:35Speaker 1: He had great hit songs. We're talking, of course, about
- 2:39Speaker 1: Lil Nas X.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Remember when he did this and then I think he
- 2:44Speaker 1: did a few renditions with like what Billy Ray Cyrus,
- 2:47Speaker 1: he did another Soul Town Road version with BTS. Yeah,
- 2:51Speaker 1: and then of course, you know.
- 2:54Speaker 1: A lot of great collabs that blew up. I mean,
- 2:57Speaker 1: one of the first few artists that really went big
- 3:00Speaker 1: on TikTok with his songs and samples and all that,
- 3:03Speaker 1: but he's not just like an influencer that's trying to
- 3:07Speaker 1: be a star, you know what I mean? Like he's
- 3:09Speaker 1: not just trying to get attention. He's actually talented. But
- 3:13Speaker 1: also some might look at him and go, this guy's
- 3:14Speaker 1: a bit eccentric because of his music videos, the things
- 3:17Speaker 1: that he has done. Yeah, yeah, yeah. And unfortunately,
- 3:21Speaker 1: For him, I think it was a few years ago
- 3:22Speaker 1: where he was spotted walking around the streets in his underwear.
- 3:26Speaker 1: The police were called. He was arrested. Uh, he has
- 3:28Speaker 1: posted a video that he's OK. Yeah, he's resurfaced. He's
- 3:32Speaker 1: in rehab. He's cleaning up and he's also seeking treatment
- 3:37Speaker 1: for what he has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. So
- 3:41Speaker 1: he looks good and he has promised the entire world
- 3:43Speaker 1: new music. He has, yeah, and you know, in the video,
- 3:46Speaker 1: if you've seen it already.
- 3:48Speaker 1: It actually made me smile. Like there's a light about
- 3:51Speaker 1: him now, you know what I mean? Yeah, like you
- 3:53Speaker 1: can tell that he has worked on healing himself and
- 3:56Speaker 1: and putting out a better version of himself to the world.
- 3:58Speaker 1: Now it makes me wonder whether there be a new
- 4:00Speaker 1: coach collaboration with. Actually, their recent, I love their recent campaign, um,
- 4:07Speaker 1: and not, not just because I worked with Coach or what,
- 4:09Speaker 1: but for real, they featured Charlie XCX as one of
- 4:13Speaker 1: the personalities in their.
- 4:14Speaker 1: Recent campaign and um I think the caption or the
- 4:18Speaker 1: tagline was, why just follow icons when you can be one?
- 4:23Speaker 1: And I was like, I love that because you, you know,
- 4:25Speaker 1: people always admire your celebrities or your icons, but you
- 4:28Speaker 1: never think like, hey, I have the potential to be
- 4:30Speaker 1: my own fashion icon or my own icon in my industry, right? I, I,
- 4:33Speaker 1: I just want to get one thing straight for Lil
- 4:35Speaker 1: Nas X, OK? This poor guy, you know, F1, the movie,
- 4:39Speaker 1: the guy that played uh what Josh.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Pierce from the Apex GP. People think that that's. It
- 4:46Speaker 1: is not. It is actually they look quite different if
- 4:50Speaker 1: you maybe it's just the hair. I don't know. It
- 4:51Speaker 1: could be just a haircut, the hairstyle. So it, it
- 4:55Speaker 1: is not him. Don't, don't be confused. Yeah, I don't
- 4:58Speaker 1: think I've seen him act before. Has he dabbled into acting?
- 5:01Speaker 1: Maybe in his own, his own music videos. Yeah, exactly. Anyway,
- 5:05Speaker 1: we're very glad to hear that he's fine.
- 5:07Speaker 1: And with celebrities that are open enough to admit that
- 5:11Speaker 1: they've been going through something, um, I think even Lau
- 5:14Speaker 1: recently said he had to cancel some shows and, and
- 5:17Speaker 1: stuff because he has to focus on himself. Like, I
- 5:19Speaker 1: respect that, you know, yeah. Looking forward to his new music,
- 5:21Speaker 1: you know, this was the song that blew the Kid
- 5:23Speaker 1: LeRoy up like 100,000%.
- 5:26Speaker 1: Um, his chat is ready and we'll be airing that
- 5:29Speaker 1: just after 9 a.m. this morning. He's actually coming to
- 5:31Speaker 1: Singapore first of July over at Arena and Expo for
- 5:36Speaker 1: his A Perfect World tour. Is this the same tour
- 5:39Speaker 1: that he got to cancel, unfortunately a few months ago
- 5:41Speaker 1: because he was not feeling well or something like that?
- 5:43Speaker 1: Was it a few months? It was like last year, right? Yeah,
- 5:45Speaker 1: I think so. It was like a year ago already. Yeah,
- 5:47Speaker 1: I think he wasn't, he had some health-related issues.
- 5:50Speaker 1: If I'm not wrong, because I can't really recall what
- 5:52Speaker 1: the announcement was, but he couldn't make it to the
- 5:55Speaker 1: whole Asia tour. So I think this is the, this
- 5:57Speaker 1: is the comeback tour for him to Asia and everyone's
- 6:00Speaker 1: very excited. He's been really busy, I'm sure on tour in,
- 6:03Speaker 1: in other parts of the world. So he took a
- 6:05Speaker 1: call with us and I'm sure some other of your
- 6:08Speaker 1: Singapore media outlets while he was on the go. So
- 6:12Speaker 1: it sounded like he was in the car.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Um, but it doesn't matter. At least we still managed
- 6:16Speaker 1: to speak with him and that's happening after 9:00 a.m.
- 6:18Speaker 1: Could have been a cheeky question, but did you ask him?
- 6:21Speaker 1: If he crosses 35 or 40, would he call himself
- 6:24Speaker 1: the adult LeRoy or still the kid Leroy? I think,
- 6:27Speaker 1: you know, I asked him something similar, not to that extent,
- 6:30Speaker 1: but he said it's just like, you know, um, at
- 6:33Speaker 1: this point, like some of his friends and family just
- 6:35Speaker 1: call him LeRoy.
- 6:38Speaker 1: Like, I mean, the kid, I guess it might be dropped.
- 6:40Speaker 1: I don't know, but this morning, now, last week, I
- 6:43Speaker 1: talked about this because I think it's some really major
- 6:47Speaker 1: durian season across like Southeast Asia right now, OK? And
- 6:51Speaker 1: uh just last week there was a piece of news
- 6:53Speaker 1: that came out from the powers that be in authority
- 6:56Speaker 1: saying like, hey, you know, actually, um, going out to
- 6:59Speaker 1: pick fruits from public parks and all that, if you
- 7:01Speaker 1: intentionally go and climb the tree, pick it or whatever,
- 7:04Speaker 1: that's actually not allowed.
- 7:05Speaker 1: You can't go and like forage for fruits. I mean,
- 7:07Speaker 1: you know, you're in durian season where when you're scrolling
- 7:10Speaker 1: on TikTok, you actually see a live streamer selling you durians, right? Yeah, no,
- 7:14Speaker 1: it happens. I mean, TikTok and all that, they sell
- 7:17Speaker 1: anything now, right? But, but the interesting thing is because, um,
- 7:21Speaker 1: over at Lorong Lilian, there's an actual place called Long.
- 7:24Speaker 1: I'm sure you know, there's, um, this famous or rather
- 7:28Speaker 1: very popular durian tree that bears a lot of fruit, OK.
- 7:32Speaker 1: I believe that if the durians fall to the ground,
- 7:34Speaker 1: you can take it and go for this particular place,
- 7:37Speaker 1: this particular occasion. So, um, it's been growing in abundance,
- 7:41Speaker 1: especially over at Lorong Lian. 30 durians have fallen to
- 7:44Speaker 1: the ground, according to the residents, and um they're, they're
- 7:47Speaker 1: spotted just standing around waiting for the fruits to fall,
- 7:50Speaker 1: especially the elderly, you know, I think they find it
- 7:51Speaker 1: quite fun. Uncle, auntie, please be careful it's durian, not
- 7:55Speaker 1: like apples or pong pong or what. Exactly, exactly, but um.
- 7:59Speaker 1: History kind of context, the durian trees were planted in 1995,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and a lot of senior citizens actually hang out at
- 8:06Speaker 1: the void deck waiting for the durians to fall. Wow,
- 8:08Speaker 1: it's a 3 year old tree. Yeah, so, um, one
- 8:11Speaker 1: of the ladies was actually being interviewed, like a resident
- 8:15Speaker 1: who has lived there for many, many years, and she
- 8:18Speaker 1: previously picked it up to taste one of the fallen
- 8:20Speaker 1: durians back in, I don't know, like 2018 or something.
- 8:24Speaker 1: But it's the same tree, so it should bear the
- 8:26Speaker 1: same type of fruit, right?
- 8:27Speaker 1: And guess what she said. It is not exactly what
- 8:30Speaker 1: you think. Like, you know, the durian that you eat
- 8:32Speaker 1: at those shops, you know, your, your, your popular durian
- 8:35Speaker 1: shops where you order in and all that, right? You
- 8:36Speaker 1: order what, like your black thorn, um, red prawn, red prawn, yeah,
- 8:41Speaker 1: you know, your Maoshanwang. It's not like that. She said
- 8:45Speaker 1: this is like a wild durian, so you don't know,
- 8:48Speaker 1: it's definitely not going to be Mao Shan Wang level, right?
- 8:51Speaker 1: And she said, unfortunately, it tastes a bit like a potato.
- 8:55Speaker 1: Like tasteless. She says tasteless and dry. There is a
- 9:00Speaker 1: new breed of durians over at Lorong. No, but I'm
- 9:04Speaker 1: wondering whether it's the kind of case where maybe it's
- 9:07Speaker 1: not ripe yet or I don't know.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Like it could fall from the tree for various reasons, right? Yeah, yeah,
- 9:15Speaker 1: she just tried one. So I don't know, maybe times
- 9:17Speaker 1: have changed. Maybe the tree's nutrition has improved over the years.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Give it a go again if you can. Or maybe
- 9:23Speaker 1: it's an actual new breed. Yeah, but I don't think you,
- 9:27Speaker 1: you know, I think we'll stick to our
- 9:29Speaker 1: Maan Wang's, it's the hunt. Take me to the beach
- 9:32Speaker 1: on 987. Quite a very apt song to play. I realized.
- 9:35Speaker 1: Take me to the beach. Yeah, so are you a
- 9:37Speaker 1: landowner with any coastal properties here in Singapore? Like what
- 9:41Speaker 1: I said, like what I said, if I were a landowner,
- 9:44Speaker 1: I wouldn't be here yapping away with you.
- 9:47Speaker 1: If I were a landowner, I'd be yapping away with developers,
- 9:50Speaker 1: you know, making meetings and making buildings happen. Hotel. That
- 9:56Speaker 1: actually sounds like some B grade one, like, you know,
- 9:59Speaker 1: the $60 a night type.
- 10:02Speaker 1: The hourly rates, is it? Anyway, uh, yes, this is
- 10:06Speaker 1: the kind of thing where I read yesterday and I thought, oh,
- 10:09Speaker 1: maybe this is like rich people news, right? But if
- 10:11Speaker 1: you think about it, you have to read between the
- 10:13Speaker 1: lines because there's a bit of a warning here as well. Yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 1: so apparently landowners, whether public or private, you are now
- 10:23Speaker 1: supposed to build a guard.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Against a projected rise in sea level by 2.15 m.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I see. So this kicks in in 2028. We're going
- 10:36Speaker 1: to start building already. So, close to 70% of the
- 10:39Speaker 1: coastline is owned by the government, so they'll be taking
- 10:41Speaker 1: care of them. The other 30% though, if you own
- 10:45Speaker 1: land near the coast in Singapore, basically near where I live.
- 10:49Speaker 1: Yeah, near where I live. So I mean if you
- 10:52Speaker 1: want your waterfront living and all that, I'm looking at
- 10:55Speaker 1: the um at the uh risk areas where the sea
- 11:00Speaker 1: levels rise in Singapore risk areas. So uh Siglap East
- 11:04Speaker 1: Coast Park where I am, OK Katong, Kallang Tuas.
- 11:09Speaker 1: Sungai Bulo Wetland reserve area, Sembawang, Kranji, and West Coast Park.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I mean, OK, but here's the thing, like most of the,
- 11:18Speaker 1: there are a lot of developments that are already built though, right? Yeah, yeah.
- 11:21Speaker 1: So what else can they do to they got to
- 11:24Speaker 1: build a shield or a wall or something. I think
- 11:27Speaker 1: over in the East Coast area they've been trying to
- 11:29Speaker 1: push it.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Back, right, like push the shoreline back. I don't know
- 11:32Speaker 1: if I'm saying this right. OK. OK, but I will
- 11:39Speaker 1: say that having been to East Coast Park since I
- 11:42Speaker 1: was a kid till now, sometimes I feel like the
- 11:46Speaker 1: water's getting closer and closer. I don't know whether I'm
- 11:49Speaker 1: imagining it, but
- 11:50Speaker 1: I'm like, how come suddenly there's so little sand and
- 11:53Speaker 1: like there's more water coming towards us, you know? You're
- 11:55Speaker 1: not imagining things, right? So to really zero in on
- 11:59Speaker 1: the ruling, right, landowners with more than 30 years left
- 12:03Speaker 1: on their lease, they must plan for sea level rise
- 12:06Speaker 1: in 2.5.
- 12:08Speaker 1: 15 m. Those with 30 years or less left on
- 12:12Speaker 1: their lease, they got to plan for a 0.7 m
- 12:15Speaker 1: rise in sea level. You got to read between the
- 12:19Speaker 1: lines here. Climate change is real, people. It's happening very
- 12:22Speaker 1: much real, yeah. Anyway, regardless, um, I still love living
- 12:26Speaker 1: by the by the beach, to be honest. Yeah, so
- 12:29Speaker 1: in terms of landowners, it makes me wonder about Sentosa Cove.
- 12:33Speaker 1: That is not, that is if I if I own
- 12:36Speaker 1: a house in Sentosa facing the sea, is it down
- 12:41Speaker 1: to me to build the shield or so, or will
- 12:43Speaker 1: it be handled by Sentosa? You know what, I have
- 12:46Speaker 1: no idea. You're asking the wrong person because clearly I'm
- 12:48Speaker 1: not a land. I don't know anything.
- 12:54Speaker 1: It's a new track by Olivia Rodrigo right here on 987,
- 12:57Speaker 1: Singapore's number one hit music station. Sonia and Jokim with you.
- 13:00Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us. Fun facts, you know her album
- 13:02Speaker 1: cover where she's swinging and she's like tilting backwards. Um,
- 13:06Speaker 1: that was actually a real picture. I think some people
- 13:09Speaker 1: were speculating, is it real? Is it AI? Did she
- 13:11Speaker 1: actually swing? OK, I'm a 38 year old man. I'm
- 13:15Speaker 1: not afraid to admit this. I really love the new album. Yes,
- 13:18Speaker 1: really good.
- 13:19Speaker 1: It's very good and I really hope the song that
- 13:21Speaker 1: she did with Robert Smith of The Cure, What's Wrong
- 13:23Speaker 1: with Me, I hope it becomes a stand-alone single. You know,
- 13:26Speaker 1: such a great song. It is, and I, I like
- 13:29Speaker 1: this side of her, to be honest. It's, she's evolving slowly.
- 13:32Speaker 1: Give her a Grammy. Take it, go so fast. OK. Anyway,
- 13:36Speaker 1: coming up in just a bit, some positive numbers, because sometimes,
- 13:39Speaker 1: you know, when we share things about, um, surveys or
- 13:42Speaker 1: statistics or, you know, what what's going on in Singapore.
- 13:44Speaker 1: And stuff, it may not always always be positive, right?
- 13:47Speaker 1: But some positive trends from the year 2023 to 2025
- 13:52Speaker 1: when it comes to recycling your items. OK, so, uh,
- 13:57Speaker 1: just a week ago while you were away as well,
- 14:00Speaker 1: there were some concerning articles about what were found in
- 14:03Speaker 1: those blue bin recycling bins, you know, blue bins, right,
- 14:06Speaker 1: at your blog and stuff. So, um, there was a
- 14:09Speaker 1: whole article and video.
- 14:10Speaker 1: shown that they found things like half-eaten sandwiches, tapao boxes,
- 14:16Speaker 1: tai fan, you know, food items, fruits scattered in the
- 14:20Speaker 1: recycling bin. Again, the blue bins are polarizing here in Singapore,
- 14:24Speaker 1: but you either know how to use it or you
- 14:27Speaker 1: don't know how to use it. But you know, that,
- 14:29Speaker 1: that shouldn't be an excuse anymore. I mean, by now, right?
- 14:33Speaker 1: Come on, OK. But some positive trends here.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Um, from the year 2023 till now, recycling numbers have
- 14:40Speaker 1: gone up from 72% in 2023.
- 14:44Speaker 1: To 78% in 2025. Not too bad. I think that's
- 14:48Speaker 1: a very good trend. Yeah, so, um, awareness of what
- 14:51Speaker 1: can be recycled, things like, you know, common household items
- 14:54Speaker 1: and what can you put in the recycling bin, what,
- 14:56Speaker 1: what you shouldn't put, it has grown and it has,
- 14:59Speaker 1: you know, been doing, doing well according to our friends
- 15:01Speaker 1: over at NEA. So, well done, Singaporeans. I think we
- 15:05Speaker 1: have to keep, keep doing this. You know what?
- 15:08Speaker 1: I want to see what the stats are for the
- 15:10Speaker 1: take-up rates when it comes to the current return right machines.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I, I want to see because you see
- 15:17Speaker 1: them in your NTUCs, your Sheng and all that. Yeah,
- 15:20Speaker 1: I just saw one at the supermarket near me, but
- 15:22Speaker 1: whether people are actively going to use it to get
- 15:24Speaker 1: their 10 cents back, I wonder. I think.
- 15:28Speaker 1: It's something that will take some time, but people will
- 15:30Speaker 1: slowly catch on. It's always like that, especially for us. Again,
- 15:34Speaker 1: look out for the logo on the cans or bottled
- 15:37Speaker 1: drinks that you can accumulate, not bad. Yeah, only those
- 15:41Speaker 1: bottles or cans with the logo, you can use the
- 15:44Speaker 1: machine to return it. Exactly. We're not paid to say this.
- 15:47Speaker 1: Just really encouraging you to do it. I haven't told
- 15:50Speaker 1: you about this yet, Joe, because, um, I wanted to
- 15:53Speaker 1: tell you live on air to get your real reaction. Alright, people,
- 15:56Speaker 1: my podcast is on. Let's go. Tell me, Ms. Chu.
- 16:00Speaker 1: You're welcome. I don't even charge you for this entertainment.
- 16:02Speaker 1: I'm gonna sip some tea as you speak. OK, so, uh,
- 16:04Speaker 1: here's the thing. A few days ago when you, actually
- 16:07Speaker 1: it's been a week since you came back from Bhutan already, right?
- 16:11Speaker 1: And shortly after that, when you came back to Singapore,
- 16:13Speaker 1: you drank a milk drink, a milk beverage, like a
- 16:19Speaker 1: milk protein shake or something, and you had a very
- 16:22Speaker 1: bad reaction to it, right? Banana milk protein shake. So this,
- 16:27Speaker 1: this protein shake, which is milk-based.
- 16:28Speaker 1: Gave you a very bad reaction and you then developed
- 16:31Speaker 1: like a, like a food poisoning situation and you couldn't
- 16:34Speaker 1: come to work on Monday, right? Yeah. So I, uh,
- 16:38Speaker 1: last night when, when I got home, OK, I saw
- 16:42Speaker 1: that I still had some cookies left from like a
- 16:45Speaker 1: gift previously.
- 16:47Speaker 1: And I was like, oh, how nice would it be
- 16:48Speaker 1: to have cookies and milk, right? This was like, I
- 16:51Speaker 1: don't know, 9:30 p.m. I was watching TV. I was
- 16:54Speaker 1: watching Netflix, OK. So then I, I went to the
- 16:57Speaker 1: fridge and I was like, oh, there's still this milk
- 16:59Speaker 1: left like in the fridge. So I went and opened it.
- 17:02Speaker 1: Then I looked at the expiry date, OK. It said
- 17:05Speaker 1: 14th June, 14th of June. It says use by 14th
- 17:08Speaker 1: of June. OK. So I asked germs, I said, do
- 17:11Speaker 1: you think it's still OK to drink? It's a use-by date.
- 17:14Speaker 1: It's not an expiry date. So he said, OK, like,
- 17:17Speaker 1: why don't you just open it up and take a
- 17:19Speaker 1: look and sniff it. Like if it smells weird or
- 17:21Speaker 1: like if the texture is comfy, then obviously it's gone bad.
- 17:25Speaker 1: So I was like, OK, I sniffed it, poured it
- 17:27Speaker 1: out into the cup, and it seemed fine. Honestly, it
- 17:30Speaker 1: seemed fine to me, and yesterday was the 17th, so
- 17:32Speaker 1: we're only 3 days past the use-by date. It's milk.
- 17:37Speaker 1: I know, I know your story. Once again, use by
- 17:39Speaker 1: is different from expiry, OK, I insist on that. Anyway, anyway,
- 17:42Speaker 1: so I poured it. I was like, oh, nice, you know,
- 17:44Speaker 1: I had my snack, everything. And then I don't know
- 17:46Speaker 1: whether this was psychological or what, right? When I went
- 17:48Speaker 1: to bed and I crawled into bed.
- 17:51Speaker 1: I told him, you know what, my stomach is starting
- 17:54Speaker 1: to churn a little. Is it because the milk went bad? Good.
- 17:59Speaker 1: And he was like, no, lah, you're fine.
- 18:02Speaker 1: He was like, no, lah, you're fine. I was like, really?
- 18:03Speaker 1: Oh my God, I feel like really gassy and really bloated,
- 18:06Speaker 1: you know. So I was hoping that I'll be able
- 18:09Speaker 1: to fall asleep because, you know, long day today and all,
- 18:11Speaker 1: and um, tossed and turned a bit. I, I eventually
- 18:15Speaker 1: went to sleep. I had a full dream that I
- 18:18Speaker 1: had the same thing as you.
- 18:20Speaker 1: And I dreamt that I had to emergency call you
- 18:23Speaker 1: at like 3 a.m. to say that I'm going to
- 18:25Speaker 1: the hospital, I cannot make it. And then I woke
- 18:28Speaker 1: up in like a, in a shock and it wasn't real,
- 18:31Speaker 1: and my stomach was fine.
- 18:33Speaker 1: No more ache. No more bloat. In fact, my stomach
- 18:35Speaker 1: is quite flat this morning, but I don't know what
- 18:37Speaker 1: happened there. It's just psychological or what. Can you please
- 18:39Speaker 1: do me a favor? Do not drink milk that is
- 18:44Speaker 1: past the expiry or use by date, please. I know,
- 18:48Speaker 1: but I trust my senses, you know, I went to
- 18:50Speaker 1: like sniff it. Only you trust your senses, OK? The
- 18:55Speaker 1: people around you, we are scared for you. I'm reliable.
- 18:57Speaker 1: I am. Wow, she's got jokes in the morning rude.
- 19:03Speaker 1: OK, you get a comedian for free here. You get
- 19:07Speaker 1: a free clown as your partner. Yes, exactly. I'm a
- 19:10Speaker 1: bit out of breath because uh
- 19:12Speaker 1: Joakim has been forcing me to try and perfect my
- 19:15Speaker 1: football kick, which I think is safe to say he's
- 19:18Speaker 1: very intimidated by my talent. I mean, there's progress. You
- 19:22Speaker 1: look less like a donkey now. You progressed to a
- 19:25Speaker 1: very nice pony. How about that. OK, OK, disclaimer, before
- 19:29Speaker 1: we speak about this whole dear you movie that's been
- 19:33Speaker 1: in the news as of late, I want to just
- 19:35Speaker 1: say this, we are not rebelling against.
- 19:37Speaker 1: The government ruling and all that. No, no, no, because we,
- 19:40Speaker 1: we know about this whole language thing and being bilingual
- 19:45Speaker 1: here in Singapore. I think it's more of we are
- 19:48Speaker 1: also observing what people are saying out there because a
- 19:51Speaker 1: long time ago there was a decision made to for
- 19:54Speaker 1: us Singaporeans, at least for your people, Sonia, the Chinese Singaporeans,
- 20:00Speaker 1: it's Chinghuai, the dialects Hokkien, Teochew, Kento all.
- 20:05Speaker 1: Yeah, no focus on that. I, I wouldn't say, OK,
- 20:08Speaker 1: they weren't the dialects were not offered as your mother
- 20:10Speaker 1: tongue for I guess, I mean, if I look at
- 20:14Speaker 1: it right, Mandarin would be the most practical way to go.
- 20:18Speaker 1: It's only because there's so many dialects. There's so many different,
- 20:21Speaker 1: I mean, look, my, my dad's side is Hokkien.
- 20:25Speaker 1: My mom's side is Peranakan, right? So they can both,
- 20:28Speaker 1: my dad can speak fluent Hokkien, my mom can speak Malay.
- 20:31Speaker 1: I can't speak any, OK, because I just didn't grow
- 20:34Speaker 1: up in that environment where your grandparents will speak to
- 20:37Speaker 1: you in the dialect. It's OK. You have other talents, um,
- 20:40Speaker 1: kicking a football. Stop it. OK, so for this whole
- 20:43Speaker 1: dear you movie, uh.
- 20:46Speaker 1: A bit of interesting news about it. The first being, oh,
- 20:51Speaker 1: people are saying it could be a Chinese propaganda movie,
- 20:54Speaker 1: which alright, alright, fine, that's not what we're going to
- 20:56Speaker 1: discuss here on 987.
- 20:58Speaker 1: It's the language because it was shot mainly in Teochew,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and unfortunately or fortunately here in Singapore, the screenings to
- 21:08Speaker 1: the general audience, there's going to be a Mandarin dub. Yeah, yeah,
- 21:12Speaker 1: but this happens sometimes as well with your like Hong
- 21:15Speaker 1: Kong films and stuff, right? It's also dubbed what one
- 21:17Speaker 1: clear example, I hated watching it.
- 21:20Speaker 1: I was gonna say that I hated watching Ip Man
- 21:22Speaker 1: in cinemas only because Donnie Yen's mouth was moving. Yes,
- 21:25Speaker 1: but the, the language coming out is different. So I,
- 21:28Speaker 1: I'm of the opinion that actually I don't like watching
- 21:30Speaker 1: dubbed movies. Like even if I don't understand the language,
- 21:34Speaker 1: even if I don't get it, I will still play
- 21:35Speaker 1: in the original language because the emotions and everything is
- 21:39Speaker 1: super different. So the, the social media sentiment now is.
- 21:43Speaker 1: In Mandarin dub for a Teochew movie, OK, yeah, even
- 21:48Speaker 1: though you say you announced limited Teochew screenings, they have, yeah,
- 21:51Speaker 1: to which all the tickets are snapped up already, and
- 21:53Speaker 1: I think in like those film festivals and all that,
- 21:57Speaker 1: it is the Teochew. So the other half of the
- 22:00Speaker 1: people are saying, you know what, I'm just gonna go
- 22:02Speaker 1: to JB and watch the.
- 22:05Speaker 1: to which it kind of breaks my heart here because
- 22:07Speaker 1: you know a few weeks ago or a few months
- 22:09Speaker 1: ago there was this whole save the cinemas movement. Yeah, yeah,
- 22:13Speaker 1: I know we need to do something for our community here.
- 22:17Speaker 1: So here's my other question, right? So Teohu movie cannot
- 22:21Speaker 1: Hokkien cano cannot, but Korean movie, Japanese movie, Hindi movie.
- 22:30Speaker 1: This is a tough question. This is a tough question
- 22:32Speaker 1: to answer. I literally don't think we're in a position
- 22:35Speaker 1: to fully answer that. I mean that's the discussion now
- 22:38Speaker 1: happening on social media. But you and me, I think
- 22:41Speaker 1: we're the same people where we cannot over movies. I can't.
- 22:45Speaker 1: It's just different, not because of the language, it's just
- 22:48Speaker 1: we just don't want to see the guy's mouth moving
- 22:50Speaker 1: but there's no sound coming out. It kills me when
- 22:52Speaker 1: that happens. Truly, truly. I don't know why its me
- 22:55Speaker 1: off a lot. Like, would you watch Squid Game in
- 22:57Speaker 1: Korean or English?
- 22:59Speaker 1: No, of course, not non-dubs. So it's original Korean language.
- 23:02Speaker 1: Have you watched the dubbed version of Singles Inferno? I couldn't. I,
- 23:07Speaker 1: I think when I tried to leave it on because
- 23:09Speaker 1: sometimes I will leave a show on and then do
- 23:11Speaker 1: some stuff like, you know, like pack my house or what, right?
- 23:14Speaker 1: So I was like, OK, since, you know, it's Singles
- 23:16Speaker 1: Inferno or whatever, I'll just put on the English dub
- 23:19Speaker 1: so I can still carry on. If not, I don't
- 23:21Speaker 1: understand if I'm not sitting in front of the TV. Yeah.
- 23:23Speaker 1: But when I did that, I just couldn't take it.
- 23:25Speaker 1: It sounded so fake you knowns.
- 23:27Speaker 1: They have their nuances and the way they inflect and
- 23:30Speaker 1: stuff and they have like the he. What's what's the
- 23:33Speaker 1: English for that? It's the same thing, but a person
- 23:36Speaker 1: who speaks English, I guess dubs over it. So the
- 23:39Speaker 1: English voiceover artist is going. I don't know actually, maybe, maybe, yeah,
- 23:44Speaker 1: I didn't make it that far. 669-11987 or you can
- 23:48Speaker 1: WhatsApp us at 90050987. Are you OK watching dubbed films,
- 23:54Speaker 1: dubbed films or dubbed series or?
- 23:57Speaker 1: Must it be like the language of origin? It must
- 24:00Speaker 1: be a language of origin for me. I will, I
- 24:02Speaker 1: will just glance down at the subtitles. That's, that's all
- 24:04Speaker 1: we can do. Give us a call 669-11987. Now it
- 24:08Speaker 1: can be any film at all or any series. It's
- 24:10Speaker 1: not limited to just this one that we're talking about today.
- 24:13Speaker 1: It's just a preference. Are you OK with watching a
- 24:15Speaker 1: dubbed film or does it really irk you? And I
- 24:18Speaker 1: know for Sonny and I, right, if both of us
- 24:20Speaker 1: were to watch the Dear movie, whether in Mandarin or Teochew,
- 24:24Speaker 1: we still have to read the subtitles.
- 24:27Speaker 1: No difference. You really no I knew what you were
- 24:29Speaker 1: gonna say. There's really no difference. So, give us a
- 24:32Speaker 1: call 669-11987 or drop us a message 90050987. Well, we,
- 24:37Speaker 1: we're talking about dubbed movies and TV series versus watching it.
- 24:42Speaker 1: In its original form, whether it bugs you or not,
- 24:46Speaker 1: and uh we've turned this into a conversation today. So
- 24:49Speaker 1: not just movie or series, even games, Sonia. Oh, I
- 24:53Speaker 1: played blackmith Wu Kong in Mandarin, Mandarin. Yeah, it just doesn't,
- 24:58Speaker 1: it's not the same. It's not the same. Soon Wu
- 25:00Speaker 1: Kong speaking English is weird, weird, right? How does he
- 25:03Speaker 1: sound like, Hi, wanna go.
- 25:05Speaker 1: A bit, a bit grungy, grungy, but with a bit
- 25:08Speaker 1: of grungy and high pitched. Yeah, there you go. One
- 25:11Speaker 1: coming in from Evan. Morning, Sonia and Joakim. Absolutely cannot
- 25:15Speaker 1: tahan dub stuff. I'm an anime lover. I watch animes
- 25:19Speaker 1: like One Piece and Demon Slayer. It is absolutely heartbreaking
- 25:23Speaker 1: to watch the anime dubbed in English.
- 25:27Speaker 1: I mean, I, I wonder if there's a survey out there, right,
- 25:29Speaker 1: on the amount of people that watch it dubbed an
- 25:32Speaker 1: an original. I'm so curious. You know how Dragon Ball,
- 25:36Speaker 1: they got all these like special moves and powers in
- 25:39Speaker 1: Japanese in English of the dragon attack.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Doesn't sound so intimidating after all. Yeah, I just made
- 25:52Speaker 1: something up, by the way. There's no such thing as
- 25:53Speaker 1: the dragon. Oh, I thought there was. I don't know.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I don't know anything about games. One coming in from Michael.
- 25:59Speaker 1: No dubbed versions of anything, please. If not, just watch
- 26:03Speaker 1: a mute version and we'll do and imagine our own
- 26:06Speaker 1: language and accent. No disrespect to the dubbing artists, but
- 26:09Speaker 1: also respecting the original artists with their efforts to show
- 26:12Speaker 1: emotions through their acting and original voices. Exactly. Exactly. Completely agree.
- 26:17Speaker 1: I mean,
- 26:17Speaker 1: I remember this was super random, but um I can't
- 26:21Speaker 1: remember which country I was in exactly, but it was
- 26:25Speaker 1: um Harry Potter that was showing on the TV like
- 26:29Speaker 1: their own free to air channel, and it was dubbed
- 26:31Speaker 1: in their own language. I can't remember where I was.
- 26:34Speaker 1: Was it Hong Kong? I can't, I can't recall, but
- 26:37Speaker 1: it was dubbed, and I burst out laughing. I couldn't talk.
- 26:39Speaker 1: I couldn't tahan. I couldn't watch the whole thing. You,
- 26:42Speaker 1: you just brought back one of my core memories, OK.
- 26:44Speaker 1: So, uh, my grandma, my paternal grandma, she likes to
- 26:48Speaker 1: watch Sun TV where they have like Tamil, Telugu, Hindi
- 26:52Speaker 1: drama series and all that, and sometimes they have Hollywood movies,
- 26:56Speaker 1: but it's dubbed in the language. Terminator. Arnold Schwarzenegger speaking Tamil.
- 27:05Speaker 1: I mean, come on, that has to be entertaining. That
- 27:09Speaker 1: has to be, how does, how do you say Terminator?
- 27:11Speaker 1: I don't know, but we watched it for all the
- 27:13Speaker 1: wrong reasons. We were just laughing at the language and
- 27:16Speaker 1: and and the the thought of Arnold speaking in Tamil.
- 27:21Speaker 1: I love that. I love that. Now I need to
- 27:22Speaker 1: find that version if it exists anymore. OK, we're going
- 27:26Speaker 1: to phone lines in just a bit, but also more
- 27:28Speaker 1: of your messages. Why not? 90050987. You can still call
- 27:32Speaker 1: us at 669-11987.
- 27:35Speaker 1: Are you able to watch dubbed films or does it
- 27:37Speaker 1: irk you? On the topic of whether or not watching
- 27:39Speaker 1: dubbed films and TV shows really just irk you, like,
- 27:43Speaker 1: can you take it or like do you just want
- 27:45Speaker 1: to watch it in its original form? This one of
- 27:47Speaker 1: course inspired by all the chatter that's involving the movie.
- 27:52Speaker 1: I mean, prior to this, whether or not it's related
- 27:55Speaker 1: to the conversation about dialect.
- 27:58Speaker 1: Um, any other language films, I can't watch it in
- 28:01Speaker 1: a dubbed language or dubbed in English, you know, it
- 28:04Speaker 1: just doesn't work for me. I, I just realized this
- 28:06Speaker 1: could have the Streisand effect because everyone's talking about it now.
- 28:10Speaker 1: The marketing wins. Yeah, exactly. Now I want to watch
- 28:13Speaker 1: the film and they might just add some extra screenings.
- 28:16Speaker 1: I don't know. Maybe. Oh, I really hope they do
- 28:17Speaker 1: fingers crossed. Yeah, let's go back to messages. I want
- 28:19Speaker 1: to say good morning to Jay. Jay says, morning, Sojo.
- 28:23Speaker 1: When I was young, my siblings and I were.
- 28:24Speaker 1: Very bad in Mandarin and we love watching Pokemon. So
- 28:29Speaker 1: my mom decided to switch it up for us and
- 28:31Speaker 1: make us learn Mandarin by watching the dubbed Mandarin version. No,
- 28:36Speaker 1: it was called Shen Qi Paoei in Mandarin. Imagine hearing
- 28:41Speaker 1: Pikachu but with the Mandarin accent. No, can you please
- 28:45Speaker 1: try one? No, no, I'm not going to. I'm going
- 28:47Speaker 1: to offend a lot of people. It's OK. You're Chinese.
- 28:49Speaker 1: Just try one.
- 28:51Speaker 1: Well, how do you say anything in Mandarin? How do
- 28:54Speaker 1: you say Pikachu in Mandarin? How inflection isn't it? It's
- 28:58Speaker 1: just Pikachu, the same thing. I don't think there's a difference. OK, OK, GPT.
- 29:06Speaker 1: How do you say Pi Pikachu in Mandarin in Mandarin?
- 29:08Speaker 1: I think they won't change it. It's probably just still Pikachu. Oh,
- 29:10Speaker 1: they'll give you Pikachu's Mandarin name. Let's see, loading.
- 29:15Speaker 1: OK. In Mandarin Chinese, Pikachu is called, I cannot read
- 29:19Speaker 1: the characters, but the honey ping Pikacho pika Pikachuw, Pikachuw.
- 29:29Speaker 1: I'm not kidding. That's the honey piggy. OK.
- 29:32Speaker 1: That's it. Let's just stick with Pikachu, OK? Exactly what
- 29:35Speaker 1: I said. When I say good morning to Nick. Nick says, morning,
- 29:38Speaker 1: Sonia and Joakim. Happy Thursday.
- 29:40Speaker 1: I grew up speaking Teochew and Hokkien with my parents
- 29:42Speaker 1: and grandparents. Grew up watching Taiwanese dramas in Hokkien with
- 29:46Speaker 1: my late grandma. Learned the Cantonese through watching Hong Kong
- 29:50Speaker 1: dramas and movies. I cannot tahan watching Steven Chow's early
- 29:55Speaker 1: movies dubbed in Mandarin, which was so weird. I would
- 29:57Speaker 1: prefer movies in its intended language. No dubbed version, please. Yeah,
- 30:02Speaker 1: you know it. I mean, look, with anything, movies, songs,
- 30:06Speaker 1: you know, any, any sort of media, right?
- 30:08Speaker 1: If it's written in that particular language, it's hard to
- 30:12Speaker 1: translate it into any other language, you know what I mean?
- 30:15Speaker 1: I just realized something about the language and the dialects. Yes,
- 30:20Speaker 1: here in Singapore, we are encouraged to be bilingual with Mandarin.
- 30:23Speaker 1: We speak it, but when we curse and swear.
- 30:27Speaker 1: I like that. No choice. Yeah. Anyway, that's how most
- 30:32Speaker 1: people learn languages. You learn the bad words first. Honestly, yeah,
- 30:36Speaker 1: you're not wrong. Where's the line? I know. Shin is
- 30:38Speaker 1: on the line. Thank you so much for holding, Shin. OK,
- 30:40Speaker 1: tell us more. Can you take it? He irks
- 30:43Speaker 2: me so much. So yes.
- 30:47Speaker 2: So my mom and I were discussing about this yesterday. Uh,
- 30:50Speaker 2: she was talking about the Toshi film that you mentioned,
- 30:53Speaker 2: and she really wants to watch it, but because the
- 30:56Speaker 2: Teohi versions are all snapped up by the tickets, so she,
- 30:59Speaker 2: she went to YouTube to watch the illegally uploaded version,
- 31:04Speaker 2: which I think is worse because we should be supporting the.
- 31:08Speaker 2: Exactly, yeah, yeah, right, yeah, we also do not watch
- 31:12Speaker 2: the Hong Kong drama serials and uh on Channel 8
- 31:15Speaker 2: because they are all dub and it really spoils the
- 31:18Speaker 2: experience for us, yeah.
- 31:20Speaker 1: No, I, I think Jo and I are in agreement
- 31:22Speaker 1: when it comes to this. You cannot replicate. I mean,
- 31:25Speaker 1: as good as the voice actors are, which I respect
- 31:27Speaker 1: what they do 100%, it's not easy, by the way,
- 31:29Speaker 1: but
- 31:29Speaker 1: You cannot replicate the acting in that moment, you know,
- 31:33Speaker 1: and the emotion. And I say this for Hong Kong dramas,
- 31:36Speaker 1: I love Cantonese. It just, it just, yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 31:42Speaker 2: I don't even understand Cantonese.
- 31:44Speaker 1: It's OK, but I wanna hear it, yeah.
- 31:48Speaker 1: Thank you so much for your call.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Thanks for joining us. The conversation flows here talking about
- 31:53Speaker 1: whether or not you can take watching a show, a
- 31:57Speaker 1: movie or a series that is dubbed. Oh, interesting topic today.
- 32:01Speaker 1: Wanna say hello to Keen on WhatsApp. Morning, Sonia. I
- 32:06Speaker 1: can't watch the Korean dramas in dubbed version.
- 32:09Speaker 1: It would sound weird to watch it in Mandarin. When
- 32:12Speaker 1: I watched it in the dub language, I would change
- 32:14Speaker 1: it back to Korean and leave the subtitles to English. Yeah, exactly.
- 32:17Speaker 1: That's exactly what I would do because it's just, you know,
- 32:20Speaker 1: as much as these vocal artists, artists are great and talented,
- 32:25Speaker 1: it is still not going to capture that moment 100%,
- 32:28Speaker 1: you know, in the gaming universe. OK, let's go. Want
- 32:31Speaker 1: to say hello to username rice cake and bunny on WhatsApp.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Morning Sojo.
- 32:37Speaker 1: It's not dubbed, but I tried watching the Dota 2
- 32:41Speaker 1: International stream in Mandarin before, and it was quite hilarious.
- 32:45Speaker 1: For example, the hero doom is called More. Mo. Oh,
- 32:51Speaker 1: that's the direct translation. I didn't know that, but that
- 32:54Speaker 1: literally means apocalypse.
- 32:57Speaker 1: PS congrats on your wedding, Sonia. You were so beautiful
- 32:59Speaker 1: that day. Thank you. Thank you. On that day. OK, thanks.
- 33:04Speaker 1: Just kidding, love you. I mean, aren't you supposed to
- 33:06Speaker 1: look at your wedding? I mean, yeah, yeah, I hope
- 33:10Speaker 1: so too. I hope so. But thank you for your compliment.
- 33:13Speaker 1: Really appreciate it. So just a quick recap here, talking
- 33:15Speaker 1: about dubbed films, can you take it or not?
- 33:20Speaker 1: I was just gonna try to dub whatever he said
- 33:21Speaker 1: in Mandarin, but I realized my Mandarin isn't that good.
- 33:24Speaker 1: You need some time to process. Um, I got time
- 33:26Speaker 1: for one more call here. Desmond, what about you? Yeah,
- 33:29Speaker 2: I, I come from a very big anime lovers and
- 33:34Speaker 2: the world is divided into, uh, and, I guess the
- 33:39Speaker 2: anime boat, right.
- 33:41Speaker 2: Ah, for me, for me is I'm definitely a sub fan.
- 33:44Speaker 2: I always like to watch sub, uh, and the thing is,
- 33:47Speaker 2: original language always gives you the best emotion.
- 33:51Speaker 2: And the fact is I watched so much of anime
- 33:54Speaker 2: on my Netflix that my account got kind of switched
- 33:56Speaker 2: to the main language to Japanese that I didn't know,
- 34:00Speaker 2: and one day I decided to watch some recommended Korean drama, right,
- 34:04Speaker 2: then I just switched it on and and it was
- 34:06Speaker 2: actually main language in Jap, didn't know. I was watching it,
- 34:10Speaker 2: happily watching it, reading the subtitles, and until I realized, eh,
- 34:14Speaker 2: how come some of the nuances is a bit different.
- 34:20Speaker 1: Uh, Desmond, don't let Koreans or Japanese hear you say this. Uh,
- 34:24Speaker 1: they hate it when you mix the language up. They
- 34:27Speaker 1: hate it, yeah.
- 34:29Speaker 1: But we feel you on that. We feel you on that. Alright,
- 34:32Speaker 1: to all couples, young and old, or singles here in Singapore,
- 34:38Speaker 1: we've got some BTO updates coming your way. Let's go.
- 34:42Speaker 1: Instead of BTO it's BT Joe.
- 34:47Speaker 1: Every time Joe says like, oh, there's a something related
- 34:50Speaker 1: to a BTO, I'm like, what? What's the latest update? Like,
- 34:52Speaker 1: have you found a girlfriend or what? Can you, can
- 34:54Speaker 1: you stop giving me nicknames that will actually? It, it,
- 34:58Speaker 1: I'm so sorry. I'm just good at it. People are
- 35:00Speaker 1: still calling me Gro B Joe BT Joe. What else did,
- 35:06Speaker 1: did I call you previously that was quite funny. It
- 35:08Speaker 1: will come to me. Do not revisit. Go for Joe.
- 35:11Speaker 1: Go for Joe. That was my campaign name for you.
- 35:13Speaker 1: Nobody went anyway.
- 35:16Speaker 1: Uh, our friends over at HDB and NMD, they've announced
- 35:19Speaker 1: 7000 new flats. Where? OK, areas like Bishan. Oh, OK,
- 35:27Speaker 1: not Bishan, Bishan per se, but like the outskirts area
- 35:31Speaker 1: of Bishan. So do you still consider them one of
- 35:32Speaker 1: your people? Yes, yes, OK, Lake View. Oh, that's in
- 35:36Speaker 1: the west side. No, no, sorry. Oh, that's the, that's
- 35:39Speaker 1: the part outside of Bishan. Oh, sorry, I thought Lakeside, Lakeside, sorry,
- 35:43Speaker 1: Lakeside is west, right? OK.
- 35:46Speaker 1: Just listen, OK? Don't, don't, don't. Uh, we also have
- 35:48Speaker 1: new ones coming up over at the Sembawang area, Woodlands,
- 35:52Speaker 1: Ang Mo Kio, Bukit Merah, and Kabo Bahru.
- 35:56Speaker 1: OK, Kaun Bahru Ang Mo Kio inside there, like really
- 36:00Speaker 1: deep in Ang Mo Kio. So, OK, take note though,
- 36:03Speaker 1: some of these BTO launches here, they fall under the
- 36:06Speaker 1: prime and the plus ruling. So make sure you are
- 36:09Speaker 1: buying to stay in there and not buying to flip
- 36:13Speaker 1: and do whatever people do with it. Yeah, don't, yeah,
- 36:16Speaker 1: I mean, look, if you.
- 36:17Speaker 1: If you finally become a homeowner, right, and you put
- 36:20Speaker 1: a lot of effort and pride into designing your own place,
- 36:23Speaker 1: making it your own, just live there lah. OK, so
- 36:26Speaker 1: I think, uh, out of all the areas, the one
- 36:29Speaker 1: over at Lakeview, they have a name already. Lakeview Cascadia. Wow,
- 36:35Speaker 1: imagine telling that to the taxi uncle.
- 36:38Speaker 1: I tell you sometimes it's very difficult, OK? Certain places
- 36:42Speaker 1: their names can be quite interesting, OK, lah, but you know, OK,
- 36:47Speaker 1: running at the Punggol coastal area, right? Well, Punggol and Sengkang,
- 36:51Speaker 1: you got a lot of north, north shore view, coastal grove, yeah, vista, enough.
- 36:58Speaker 1: All these names, let's leave it at that. You know, honestly,
- 37:01Speaker 1: this could be a great topic for another day when
- 37:02Speaker 1: we open up phone lines. Like what are the most
- 37:04Speaker 1: commonly mispronounced buildings and places here in Singapore. I know one,
- 37:08Speaker 1: this taxi uncle once I took, took a cab, OK, um,
- 37:12Speaker 1: and I was going to
- 37:15Speaker 1: Rendezvous Hotel, rendezvous because they've got some food stuff there
- 37:19Speaker 1: and some bars and stuff. So it's like rendezvous. He's like, what? What?
- 37:23Speaker 1: And I was like, rendezvous. I showed him on the,
- 37:24Speaker 1: on the phone. He's like, Oh man, that's Vus. Yes,
- 37:27Speaker 1: I'll take you there. Can you blame the uncle, you
- 37:29Speaker 1: can't because it's difficult to pronounce. He says it the
- 37:32Speaker 1: way it's exactly, and I don't even blame him. That's the,
- 37:35Speaker 1: that is the beauty of Singapore in a way.
- 37:38Speaker 1: I wouldn't trade it for the world. Rendez Rendez verse, yes.
- 37:42Speaker 1: Where were you going? Another bar, is it? Can you not,
- 37:46Speaker 1: can you not out me like this? It's there, right?
- 37:48Speaker 1: It's there, yes. You went for a rendez. Stop it,
- 37:51Speaker 1: to make your mouth water, I've got some food news
- 37:54Speaker 1: that could be, uh, coming your way and tempting you
- 37:57Speaker 1: over the next week or so if you can make
- 37:59Speaker 1: some plans. So what kind of cuisine? Um, this is
- 38:01Speaker 1: going to be local, local, and maybe you could try
- 38:04Speaker 1: in time for Father's Day. I don't know because yeah, reminder.
- 38:07Speaker 1: Once again, Father's Day is coming up this weekend. 3 days. Yeah,
- 38:10Speaker 1: so look, I mean, whenever I, um, talk to my
- 38:14Speaker 1: family about, oh, Mother's Day or Father's Day and all,
- 38:16Speaker 1: over the years, I feel like the opinion has changed.
- 38:19Speaker 1: Instead of wanting to book like a nice big fancy
- 38:22Speaker 1: restaurant or whatever, my parents are more, you know, they,
- 38:24Speaker 1: they increasingly say things like, let's just do something simple.
- 38:27Speaker 1: Like why, why spend so much money? Don't spend so
- 38:28Speaker 1: much money. Do something easy, simple. I don't minda restaurant.
- 38:31Speaker 1: I was like, I'm down. I love Tsa. Yeah, so
- 38:34Speaker 1: what's the plan for our dad, huh? What? Oh.
- 38:37Speaker 1: You mean my dad. My dad and your dad, dad,
- 38:40Speaker 1: because we are both adopted already. Why don't we just
- 38:43Speaker 1: get the two of them to have lunch together and
- 38:45Speaker 1: put a camera there and see what happens. Given how
- 38:47Speaker 1: they are exSJI boys, they got plenty to talk about.
- 38:51Speaker 1: I'm very sure actually quite sure they crossed paths when
- 38:54Speaker 1: they were in school. Yeah. What? Why are you laughing?
- 38:58Speaker 1: The song title. I knew it. I knew you. Yeah,
- 39:01Speaker 1: I mean, say in a Singaporean accent and it completely changes. Yeah,
- 39:04Speaker 1: I knew you. I knew it, yeah.
- 39:07Speaker 1: OK. Anyway, time for some food news. 123, wait, wait, happy, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 39:12Speaker 1: Food news, news. Sonia with the good news. Give it
- 39:18Speaker 1: to us, Miss Chuw. Yeah, OK, so, um, I told
- 39:21Speaker 1: you this is a local one, right? And uh this
- 39:25Speaker 1: I feel is such a great story and an inspiring
- 39:28Speaker 1: story for all of us because this particular hawker went
- 39:31Speaker 1: through a big
- 39:32Speaker 1: Transition in life, I would say from working at a really,
- 39:36Speaker 1: really upmarket place, uh, not even in Singapore, over in Sydney,
- 39:40Speaker 1: she actually successfully opened a kuiwei shop here in Singapore
- 39:44Speaker 1: as a hawker, and she celebrated her 24th anniversary of
- 39:49Speaker 1: the of the store. Very, very nicely done. I mean, OK,
- 39:52Speaker 1: she's lovingly called the Choubu hawker because she's, she's attractive, and, OK.
- 39:58Speaker 1: Before that, before that, she, she may not be within
- 40:01Speaker 1: the age range that you want to date for now. OK,
- 40:04Speaker 1: I'm so sorry. Yeah, OK, eyes lit up. Anyway, um,
- 40:08Speaker 1: she's 60 years old, so I don't think that you
- 40:10Speaker 1: are looking to date at this point anyway, but we'll see,
- 40:14Speaker 1: you never know, you never know. Um, but her name
- 40:16Speaker 1: is Dawn. She's beautiful. She opened a, um, Teohu Kui.
- 40:20Speaker 1: Over at Amoi Street Food Center, and I think now
- 40:24Speaker 1: she's going through some, you know, health-related issues, you know,
- 40:27Speaker 1: with hawker, with the hawker scene, it's tough to find
- 40:30Speaker 1: a successor as well, and that's why she's contemplating retirement,
- 40:33Speaker 1: but that's why I like what 8 Days Eat did
- 40:37Speaker 1: with this particular article, because it really shows you how
- 40:40Speaker 1: much hard work goes into running a hawker store.
- 40:43Speaker 1: Looking at the picture, not trying to get into a
- 40:45Speaker 1: good books, but Miss Dawn, there's no way you are 160.
- 40:49Speaker 1: I know she's gorgeous. She's gorgeous. Now there are a
- 40:52Speaker 1: lot of customers that tell her that, you know, she's
- 40:54Speaker 1: very inspiring when, uh, when I run a business, I
- 40:56Speaker 1: want to be like you. I think there are a
- 40:58Speaker 1: lot of female regulars working in the CBD that go
- 41:00Speaker 1: visit her store as well. And of course, apparently a
- 41:03Speaker 1: lot of guys still try to shoot their shot, you know,
- 41:07Speaker 1: with Beautiful Dawn over at Ang Moi Street Food Center. I,
- 41:10Speaker 1: I love that place, by the way.
- 41:11Speaker 1: So I think the moral of the story is, she
- 41:14Speaker 1: is very good at what she does. She's excellent at
- 41:16Speaker 1: what she does. It was a big change for her
- 41:18Speaker 1: to go from some upmarket restaurant to running a hawker
- 41:21Speaker 1: by herself, and she was at one point, a one-woman show,
- 41:25Speaker 1: by the way, because it was tough to find investors.
- 41:27Speaker 1: Some people pulled.
- 41:28Speaker 1: Out of it, you know, and didn't quite believe in
- 41:30Speaker 1: the whole thing, but she believed in herself. She successfully
- 41:33Speaker 1: went on, and I think even her own family had
- 41:35Speaker 1: their doubts. They said, how are you going to survive? Yeah,
- 41:37Speaker 1: I think we're in the same article. I'm looking at
- 41:38Speaker 1: one of the best sellers right now, the carrot cake. Yo,
- 41:42Speaker 1: and I want the sungkui. I need to try the
- 41:43Speaker 1: sungkui right now. The cake looks good. I love it.
- 41:45Speaker 1: Um, so you know what, at the end of the day,
- 41:47Speaker 1: go support her because I don't know when she's gonna retire.
- 41:49Speaker 1: She is thinking about it, but I'm guessing with all
- 41:52Speaker 1: the media attention now there might be a surge of
- 41:54Speaker 1: customers because everything looks fantastic and the whole trade of
- 41:58Speaker 1: making quai, handmade quai is a dying trade. So let's
- 42:02Speaker 1: support them while we can. Yeah, over at Amoi Street
- 42:04Speaker 1: Food Center at Maxwell Road. It's excellent.
