- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Each year,
- 0:00we reimagine the same momentous day that we just heard read
- 0:09about in Matthew
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: chapter 21.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: We imagine that we are in Jerusalem.
- 0:16The city is beginning to hum with an energy that always
- 0:22precedes Passover.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: Pilgrims are pouring in from all kinds of different places.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Vendors are crowding the streets.
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: The Roman soldiers posted on every corner are watching the crowd.
- 0:42SPEAKER_00: And the city is already tense.
- 0:47And it is always tense at Passover because Passover is a feast
- 0:55about Israel's liberation.
- 0:59SPEAKER_00: And liberation is exactly what Rome is in the business of preventing.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: And then, something new happens.
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Something new is coming down from the Mount of Olives.
- 1:17SPEAKER_00: Word passes through the crowd the way word always passes through a crowd.
- 1:24In fragments,
- 1:26half heard,
- 1:27then half invented,
- 1:29like the kids' game we play.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: It's a prophet from Galilee.
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: It's the one who raised Lazarus.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: It's the son of David.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: It's the coming liberator.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: It's the Messiah.
- 1:44People are tearing branches from the trees and throwing their
- 1:49cloaks on the road.
- 1:51SPEAKER_00: And someone begins to shout.
- 1:53SPEAKER_00: And then everybody is shouting, Hosanna, Hosanna, save us.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: And then they see him on a donkey.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Not a war horse, not surrounded by an armed escort.
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: He's sitting on a borrowed donkey,
- 2:24riding into the capital city of an occupied nation with a crowd
- 2:31of ragtag pilgrims
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: and peasants waving branches around him like this is a coronation.
- 2:42SPEAKER_00: And they find themselves asking a new question.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: What is this?
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: What's exactly happening here?
- 2:54SPEAKER_00: What is he going to do?
- 2:59Matthew tells us that when Jesus entered Jerusalem,
- 3:02the whole city was in turmoil.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: The Greek word he uses is seio, the same word used for an earthquake.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: The city was shaking, and the question shaking it was a what question.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: What is this guy going to do?
- 3:29SPEAKER_00: It is a fair question.
- 3:31Because what Jesus is doing is either the bravest thing anyone
- 3:37has ever done,
- 3:39SPEAKER_00: or it is by far the most reckless.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: He is riding directly into the seat of power that want him dead.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: The chief priests have already been plotting against him.
- 3:54SPEAKER_00: Judas has already begun to calculate the price of a betrayal.
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: And Jesus...
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: He knows all of this.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: And instead, he arranges a donkey.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: He fulfills a prophecy.
- 4:07He deliberately fulfills Zachariah's ancient image of a king
- 4:12who comes not in
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: conquest,
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: but in humility and rides straight into the seat of power.
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: What is he doing?
- 4:27Well,
- 4:28he is answering with his actions the question that his entire
- 4:36ministry has been raising.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: He is saying this is the direction that love travels.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Love does not protect itself.
- 4:49SPEAKER_00: Love does not retreat to the safe distance of good intentions.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: Love rides towards the suffering
- 4:58SPEAKER_00: toward the broken city,
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: toward the cross,
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: if that is where the road leads,
- 5:05because love has decided that the destination matters more than
- 5:12the survival of the
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: traveler.
- 5:17He is also doing something that his followers will not
- 5:21understand until much later.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: The crowd sees a king arriving and shouts for salvation.
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: They are not wrong,
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: exactly,
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: but they are imagining the wrong kind of salvation,
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: the kind that drives out Rome and restores the throne of David,
- 5:43SPEAKER_00: the kind that answers power with greater power.
- 5:47They do not yet know that the restoration and liberation Jesus
- 5:52is bringing required
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: him to do things none of them are prepared to follow.
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: This season of Lent has asked us good questions.
- 6:08Questions about our spiritual lives,
- 6:11our practices,
- 6:13our interior condition.
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: But Palm Sunday asks us something different and harder.
- 6:24SPEAKER_00: It does not ask us about our beliefs.
- 6:31SPEAKER_00: It asks us about our direction.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: It asks, where are we headed?
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: Because the crowd on Palm Sunday believed in Jesus,
- 6:46for about a week they shouted his praises on sunday and they
- 6:51were silent by friday
- 6:54the distance between hosanna and crucify him is not as far as
- 7:00we would like to
- 7:02think it can be traveled in five days by people who were
- 7:08entirely sincere when they
- 7:11SPEAKER_00: waved the branches so what
- 7:18SPEAKER_00: They were following a what.
- 7:24SPEAKER_00: They were following their vision of what Jesus ought to do.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: What salvation ought to look like.
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: What kind of king he ought to be.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: And when he turned out to be something other than what they expected...
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: when he cleansed the temple instead of storming the praetorium,
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: when he went to a love feast,
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: a dinner party instead of rallying an army,
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: when he let himself be arrested without a fight,
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: they had nothing left to hold on to.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: Their what had failed them.
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: The question for us this morning is...
- 8:10Have the things we have re-imagined this Lenten season actually
- 8:17changed the
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: direction we are walking?
- 8:23Belief that does not change behavior is not yet belief in the
- 8:32fullest sense.
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: It's just agreement.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: And agreement is not the same thing as following.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: Jesus is on the road to Jerusalem,
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: to the cross,
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: to the worst the human beings can do to another one.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: And then beyond it is something no one has yet to imagine.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: The question is not whether you admire the journey.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: The question is whether we are willing to walk the same road.
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: Here is what I want to leave with you as we move from this place into the
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: fellowship hall to the table and the basin and the towel.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: The crowd on Palm Sunday was focused on the wrong question.
- 9:29SPEAKER_00: What is this?
- 9:35SPEAKER_00: But the city's deeper question,
- 9:37SPEAKER_00: the one that will not be answered until a garden on Easter morning,
- 9:43SPEAKER_00: is the one that Matthew records in verse 10.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: Who is this?
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: And all we call, Jesus will be showing us.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: In the upper room, breaking bread and washing feet, he will show us.
- 10:04SPEAKER_00: In Gethsemane, praying until his sweat falls like blood, he will show us.
- 10:11SPEAKER_00: On the cross, forgiving the ones who are killing him, he will show us.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: And in the silence of Holy Saturday,
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: when hope itself seems to have been buried,
- 10:27SPEAKER_00: we will wait for the answer that only Easter can give.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: So today, take up your branch.
- 10:36SPEAKER_00: Walk the road or the corridor.
- 10:40Do not look away from where it leads and hold the question that
- 10:46is coming.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: Not what is this, but who is this?
