- 0:55Speaker 2: All right, welcome aboard. It's Friday night, and we are
- 0:59Speaker 2: super glad you're with this. Hope you're having a good
- 1:02Speaker 2: start to your weekend. It is past seven o'clock. Can
- 1:05Speaker 2: I say the weekend is started? I don't care if
- 1:07Speaker 2: you say I can or not. I'm going to say
- 1:08Speaker 2: it anyway. The weekend is underway. Except for Christine Nicholas
- 1:12Speaker 2: and Kevin mccallachaus. Here we are, Ladie. We're doing our
- 1:15Speaker 2: thing for another hour, and then you can have your
- 1:18Speaker 2: apparol sprits and I can have my my Negroni, except
- 1:22Speaker 2: I can't because I'm on a diet right now. But
- 1:24Speaker 2: as soon as I get off the diet, I'll have
- 1:25Speaker 2: a Negroni again.
- 1:27Speaker 3: How can a Negroni be fattening?
- 1:29Speaker 4: You know?
- 1:30Speaker 2: Well, I think it's all about the alcohol and the
- 1:33Speaker 2: sugar calcohol. Yeah, I think that's probable.
- 1:35Speaker 5: Well, it feels like the weekend started on Wednesday because
- 1:38Speaker 5: everybody was looking forward to the Knicks Parade, which took
- 1:41Speaker 5: place yesterday, and so everybody was in Knix.
- 1:45Speaker 2: Now being the big boss that you are over at
- 1:47Speaker 2: the you know, Nicholas Glints pr Legendary PR Company, Did
- 1:52Speaker 2: you give your people the day off on Thursday?
- 1:54Speaker 5: No, because well they have many of them have off
- 1:58Speaker 5: today for juneteen. But for Nick Knick's parade.
- 2:02Speaker 3: It is kind of.
- 2:03Speaker 5: Interesting because we had we had our intern director of fun,
- 2:08Speaker 5: Bennett Wee, assigned to the parade.
- 2:11Speaker 2: His father happens to time that a work assignment.
- 2:15Speaker 5: Yes, but I realized that by eight o'clock everything was
- 2:20Speaker 5: closed down, and his father, working at the law department downtown,
- 2:23Speaker 5: went in super early, and he himself had difficulty, even
- 2:27Speaker 5: with ID and everything, getting into his building. So by
- 2:31Speaker 5: the time Bennett was planning to get there, he wouldn't
- 2:33Speaker 5: have made it. So we were able to live vicariously
- 2:36Speaker 5: through Peter Weisze and also Bobby, our.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Good friend, who got there.
- 2:40Speaker 5: And Nick's sister left the house at five am to
- 2:45Speaker 5: get down there from Brooklyn.
- 2:46Speaker 3: His sister lives in Brooklyn.
- 2:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that's your sister in law we're talking about.
- 2:50Speaker 3: Yeah, my sister in law. So she made it. She's
- 2:52Speaker 3: a huge Knicks fan. But it was pretty wild.
- 2:54Speaker 2: And we have official numbers on who showed up for
- 2:57Speaker 2: the parade, because what I read the estimates were were
- 3:00Speaker 2: between two and four million. There's only a five million
- 3:03Speaker 2: registered voters in New York.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I don't know about that.
- 3:06Speaker 5: Maybe that's who viewed the parade, because I think more
- 3:09Speaker 5: people couldn't get into the parade area than got in. Okay,
- 3:14Speaker 5: because they started to close down those barricades.
- 3:16Speaker 2: Well, they were climbing up on the scaffolding and stuff.
- 3:18Speaker 5: I mean, I saw that, And that's the crazy thing,
- 3:21Speaker 5: because they were sitting on top of.
- 3:22Speaker 2: Buildings watching well.
- 3:24Speaker 3: Susie, my sister in law.
- 3:25Speaker 5: She took photos and sent it to them to us,
- 3:29Speaker 5: and I noticed she was under a scaffolding. And then
- 3:32Speaker 5: I'm watching TV and I'm saying, Susie, they're climbing on
- 3:35Speaker 5: the scaffolding. She goes, yeah, I know, I know they're climbing.
- 3:37Speaker 5: I'm like, get away from there.
- 3:39Speaker 3: That is not the safest place. And she's like, I
- 3:41Speaker 3: can't move. There's no way I can move. So, you know,
- 3:44Speaker 3: we did a couple of prayers and we made it through.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Yeah, she made well. They were on the light they
- 3:48Speaker 2: were on the traffic light poles, and I will say
- 3:52Speaker 2: that they appeared not to be trying to destroy the place,
- 3:56Speaker 2: unlike what happened after Games five or four and five,
- 4:00Speaker 2: which turned out really bad and you had people that
- 4:03Speaker 2: were climbing on things trying to destroy them. These were
- 4:05Speaker 2: just people trying to get They were just trying to
- 4:07Speaker 2: get a site line. They just wanted to see the
- 4:09Speaker 2: team as it went by.
- 4:10Speaker 3: Oh, there were a couple of knuckleheads.
- 4:12Speaker 5: I mean, if you watched the reels, some of New
- 4:15Speaker 5: York's not so fine as showed up. I got to
- 4:18Speaker 5: say they were probably not from New York, but yeah,
- 4:21Speaker 5: but overall it was peaceful and according to ab Are,
- 4:25Speaker 5: a resident expert, over two million people attended the parade.
- 4:29Speaker 2: It was quite the show. Now I got to ask
- 4:31Speaker 2: because I got asked by somebody else about this, and
- 4:33Speaker 2: you would be the perfect person to know this. Did
- 4:36Speaker 2: this rival was the same size as or bigger than
- 4:42Speaker 2: normal Yankee parades when they win the World Series.
- 4:45Speaker 5: I don't know about size, but I do know that
- 4:47Speaker 5: it certainly united the city where we were all rooting
- 4:51Speaker 5: for the Knicks, and you have a divided city when
- 4:53Speaker 5: it comes to the Yankees and the Mets. And we'll
- 4:56Speaker 5: talk a little bit more about that when Art Shamsky
- 4:58Speaker 5: from the sixty nine Mets be our guest. I'm so
- 5:01Speaker 5: excited to have a World Series champion. Art Shampski joining
- 5:06Speaker 5: us a little bit later, but he'll tell you firsthand what.
- 5:09Speaker 3: That was like.
- 5:11Speaker 5: But I'm having been through four ticker tapes for the
- 5:15Speaker 5: Yankees and then one for the Rangers, this one definitely
- 5:20Speaker 5: had a different feel to it. Everybody was aware of it,
- 5:23Speaker 5: everybody and it was you know, ticker tape parades in
- 5:26Speaker 5: the past, they really stayed downtown.
- 5:28Speaker 3: This was everywhere.
- 5:30Speaker 5: When I got off the train at Grand Central, you
- 5:32Speaker 5: walk past the NBA store, there was a huge line.
- 5:34Speaker 5: You go into Times Square, there are people just partying
- 5:37Speaker 5: and watching, and you know, it was really a wonderful
- 5:40Speaker 5: day for New York City, despite you know, some knuckleheads.
- 5:44Speaker 5: We had a I'm sure you probably you know heard
- 5:47Speaker 5: that we had a little bit of an issue in
- 5:49Speaker 5: Times Square, But guess what the issue and the headline
- 5:52Speaker 5: really should be cops nab bad guy right then and there. Yeah,
- 5:55Speaker 5: and it was just a stupid kid that couldn't shoot straight. Thankfully, thankfully, thankfully.
- 6:01Speaker 5: And I just love the article in the New York
- 6:03Speaker 5: Post where they're like, yeah, we were just sitting here
- 6:05Speaker 5: and enjoying the day and then heard some gunshots.
- 6:08Speaker 3: But now we're enjoying our shish kebab and chillin.
- 6:13Speaker 2: That's what say. That was the word that the chilling. Okay,
- 6:17Speaker 2: Kebob's and chilling. That's going to be our new subtitle
- 6:21Speaker 2: on Fun Friday. Join Christine and Kevin this Fun Friday
- 6:24Speaker 2: for shish Kebob's and chilling.
- 6:26Speaker 5: Yeah, and that sound of fireworks, pay no attention to that.
- 6:29Speaker 2: That's right, It's just more firecrackers.
- 6:31Speaker 6: Going off.
- 6:31Speaker 2: Well, here's the thing, how could how could how could
- 6:35Speaker 2: t Square not do something fabulous in Times Square? I mean,
- 6:40Speaker 2: if you're not going to make it into the parade route,
- 6:41Speaker 2: you had to have a big party in Times Square.
- 6:43Speaker 5: Well, and it's become the epicenter and the meeting place.
- 6:46Speaker 5: Not only you know, you have the World Cup going on.
- 6:48Speaker 5: The Juneteenth Concert happened earlier today and that was a massive,
- 6:53Speaker 5: beautiful celebration. On Sunday, you're going to have the Summer
- 6:56Speaker 5: Solstice in Times Square where you're from seven thirty am
- 6:59Speaker 5: until eight thirty pm. You're gonna have folks stretching out
- 7:03Speaker 5: and doing what they do. Those downward dogs, Kevin, you
- 7:06Speaker 5: know all.
- 7:06Speaker 2: About you well, I know them well. And then on Tuesday,
- 7:11Speaker 2: you and I and Lou Bassine are gonna be doing
- 7:14Speaker 2: my national show from the Heart from the bow Tie.
- 7:16Speaker 2: I think I think we're going to be right there quotes.
- 7:18Speaker 3: I'm so excited for that.
- 7:19Speaker 2: And I got to tell you the coolest thing. Laura
- 7:22Speaker 2: Scha from my boss at Salem, New York. She sends
- 7:25Speaker 2: me this little note yesterday and she goes, I'm not
- 7:29Speaker 2: trying to make the subject line was I'm not trying
- 7:31Speaker 2: to make you cry. Now I don't. I'm like, you
- 7:34Speaker 2: read a subject line that says that, and you're like, well,
- 7:36Speaker 2: this isn't going to be good. And she she sent
- 7:39Speaker 2: me a link and I opened it up that we're
- 7:42Speaker 2: taking over some of the billboards in Times Square that
- 7:44Speaker 2: day and they're they're gonna put a whole advertisement for
- 7:48Speaker 2: that Kevin show on the big Times Square billboard.
- 7:51Speaker 5: I didn't even know what your big face is going
- 7:54Speaker 5: to be on bill's.
- 7:55Speaker 2: Going to be taken. And I started crying, like, your.
- 8:00Speaker 3: Fat heads for someone don't need to do a fat
- 8:02Speaker 3: head now for you? Are fat house required?
- 8:05Speaker 6: Yes?
- 8:06Speaker 2: All I said to her in a response email, I said, well,
- 8:08Speaker 2: for someone who's not trying to you're you're doing an
- 8:10Speaker 2: awful good job at it. So I'm going to.
- 8:13Speaker 3: Tell everyone the details.
- 8:14Speaker 2: For Celebrate two fifty. We're gonna we're gonna basically be
- 8:17Speaker 2: there from six in the morning until seven or eight
- 8:20Speaker 2: in the evening, and there's going to be several of
- 8:23Speaker 2: our kind of key shows from AM nine seventy that
- 8:28Speaker 2: are going to be there. Joe Piscopo is going to
- 8:30Speaker 2: be there. I'm going to do my national show from
- 8:31Speaker 2: two to four. Scott Jennings will be there doing his thing,
- 8:36Speaker 2: and then we're gonna tape some future footage for.
- 8:39Speaker 6: Radio Night Live.
- 8:40Speaker 2: You and I are going to do that, and also
- 8:43Speaker 2: I believe Arthur Idalla is going to originate his show
- 8:46Speaker 2: from there. So it's going to be a whole day
- 8:49Speaker 2: of broadcasting and for for the shows that aren't live there,
- 8:52Speaker 2: all of us that are broadcasting live there, the talent
- 8:55Speaker 2: from the station. We're going to be doing reports to
- 8:57Speaker 2: our other national shows from Times Square, talking about all
- 9:00Speaker 2: of the amazing things that are going on as we
- 9:03Speaker 2: have really kicked into America two fifty. We've been talking
- 9:06Speaker 2: about it for weeks and weeks and months and months.
- 9:09Speaker 2: It's here. It's time. July first is around the corner
- 9:12Speaker 2: and we're ready to tell Happy Birthday to America. And
- 9:16Speaker 2: I just found this out last week, Christy. There's a
- 9:19Speaker 2: weekend travel show. I think it's called RS Global Travel.
- 9:22Speaker 2: They're on about six hundred radio stations across the country.
- 9:25Speaker 2: They air on Saturdays, and they've asked me to come
- 9:29Speaker 2: in with them on July fourth from the Intrepid and
- 9:33Speaker 2: do some color commentary as we broadcast the flotilla. First,
- 9:38Speaker 2: the naval review that will take place, and then the
- 9:41Speaker 2: parade of ships, the tall ships that'll come after that.
- 9:43Speaker 2: I will only be there for thirty minutes, but it's
- 9:45Speaker 2: going to be so we're the megaphone screaming America two
- 9:50Speaker 2: fifty to the rest of the world.
- 9:52Speaker 5: Yeah, and we've been talking about it and folks, if
- 9:54Speaker 5: you missed it last week, you can go on SoundCloud
- 9:57Speaker 5: you can listen to our podcast. We had Chris O'Brien
- 10:00Speaker 5: on from Sale Fourth two fifty. We had Peter Christian
- 10:04Speaker 5: Aigner from the Gotham Center who's got an amazing new app.
- 10:08Speaker 3: So Happy too fifty. So don't come join us Tuesday.
- 10:12Speaker 2: We're going to Park Square all day Tuesday. Time Square
- 10:15Speaker 2: coming right back, much more fun Friday, straight ahead.
- 10:22Speaker 1: Now I'm from New York back to Radio Night Life.
- 10:25Speaker 1: You're Kevin mccollor.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Welcome back. It's the Friday edition of Radio Night Live,
- 10:30Speaker 2: which means it is time to talk fun and Christine,
- 10:32Speaker 2: you've been like running around like a giddy school girl
- 10:35Speaker 2: all week going. I can't wait to get to the
- 10:37Speaker 2: show on Friday. We're going to have the coolest guest
- 10:39Speaker 2: I know. You've been dying to do this introduction for days,
- 10:42Speaker 2: so please enjoy this moment.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Well, thank you, Kevin.
- 10:46Speaker 5: I mean, we've been talking about Nixon five, but we
- 10:49Speaker 5: can't forget Mets in five, way back from nineteen sixty nine.
- 10:52Speaker 5: So tonight we have our Chamsky, legendary baseball player, member
- 10:55Speaker 5: of the sixty nine Miracle Mets, and author of a
- 10:58Speaker 5: book that I find very fascinating.
- 11:01Speaker 3: It's not a new book, but you can, of course
- 11:03Speaker 3: still get it.
- 11:04Speaker 5: It's called The Magnificent Seasons, How the Jets, Mets and
- 11:08Speaker 5: Knicks made sports history and uplifted a city and the
- 11:12Speaker 5: country and art. We are so pleased to have you
- 11:15Speaker 5: first time on Ratio Nut Live because this has been
- 11:18Speaker 5: a unifying, uplifting experience that New Yorkers have been just
- 11:24Speaker 5: living through with the Knicks finally becoming the NBA champions.
- 11:28Speaker 5: Right now, we still feel the afterglow of it.
- 11:31Speaker 3: But you were there in the.
- 11:33Speaker 5: Thick of it in nineteen sixty nine with those Miracle Mets,
- 11:35Speaker 5: and I would love to know if you're thinking of
- 11:38Speaker 5: writing an addendum to your book and how this compared
- 11:42Speaker 5: to the Mets in sixty nine and also the Jets
- 11:46Speaker 5: and the Knicks that you wrote about.
- 11:48Speaker 7: Well, thanks so much. It's great to be with you.
- 11:50Speaker 7: It was an incredible time in my life. It's still
- 11:53Speaker 7: still in New York because it's still doing personal appearances
- 11:57Speaker 7: and talking about this incredible.
- 11:59Speaker 6: Period of my life.
- 12:00Speaker 7: Team, the sixty nine Mets, and of course the Magnificent
- 12:02Speaker 7: Seasons really wasn't a labor of love for me. Because
- 12:06Speaker 7: what's interesting about the three teams is that many people
- 12:09Speaker 7: forget this all this one for the first time. Nobody
- 12:12Speaker 7: had won before. A lot of people think the Knicks
- 12:14Speaker 7: had won, but we, the Jets, and the Knicks all
- 12:17Speaker 7: won for the first time. But you have to put
- 12:20Speaker 7: it in perspective of what was going on in the
- 12:22Speaker 7: city and the country and the world at the time.
- 12:24Speaker 7: You know, we're in the world that's upside down now,
- 12:26Speaker 7: but back in those days, the war in Vietnam was
- 12:28Speaker 7: here in the country apart, so many problems going on
- 12:31Speaker 7: with the city in New York of assassinations, just a
- 12:36Speaker 7: terrible time. And what we did collectively, all three of
- 12:39Speaker 7: the teams, has made people feel better about their lives
- 12:42Speaker 7: for a brief period of time, and in some cases
- 12:45Speaker 7: this whole fifty seven years later, people are still talking
- 12:49Speaker 7: about it, and I get Vietnam veterans and people who
- 12:53Speaker 7: were in despair at the time coming up to me
- 12:55Speaker 7: and just saying thank you, and so for me, my
- 12:58Speaker 7: life changed October sixth, nineteen sixty nine when we won
- 13:02Speaker 7: the World Series and the course being in that parade
- 13:04Speaker 7: that was a few days later was unbelievable, and so
- 13:07Speaker 7: many memories about it, all these guys on the Knicks,
- 13:10Speaker 7: which has been great for the city of New York
- 13:12Speaker 7: and at a time when people needed something that may
- 13:15Speaker 7: be positive because we're again, we're in a world it's
- 13:18Speaker 7: upside down now too, but something like this really brings
- 13:21Speaker 7: a city together, and the Knicks doing this is just incredible.
- 13:25Speaker 7: And all of those players on that team their lives
- 13:27Speaker 7: have changed too from that day when they won. And
- 13:30Speaker 7: it's been a long time, so many years since the
- 13:32Speaker 7: last championship for the Knicks. But to me, I think
- 13:35Speaker 7: it's been great for the city. And of course I
- 13:38Speaker 7: was very good friends with a lot of the guys
- 13:39Speaker 7: that played on the Knicks back in those teams in
- 13:42Speaker 7: that particular year, and so I'm really happy for them
- 13:45Speaker 7: because it's just great for everybody who's involved.
- 13:49Speaker 3: It is a magical time.
- 13:51Speaker 5: Our Champsky the fact that you can talk about this,
- 13:54Speaker 5: and you mentioned this in.
- 13:55Speaker 3: Your book, and we are in a parallel world.
- 13:58Speaker 5: I feel like because New York City and our countries divided.
- 14:02Speaker 5: And I loved how the Knicks in almost all of
- 14:06Speaker 5: their interviews, they said, we did this for the city.
- 14:08Speaker 3: The city needed.
- 14:09Speaker 5: This, and this is a team that was not about individualism,
- 14:14Speaker 5: but it was about really teamwork.
- 14:18Speaker 3: By the way, Tracy Hitprint has walked into the studio.
- 14:20Speaker 5: Tracy, thank you for joining us, and thank you for
- 14:22Speaker 5: introducing us to Art Champsky. This is really a special show.
- 14:28Speaker 5: Tracy and Art were on a cruise together. So Tracy,
- 14:33Speaker 5: you have a question for Art Champsky or an observation
- 14:36Speaker 5: you want to.
- 14:39Speaker 8: You know, the main thing I'll say about Art, He's
- 14:42Speaker 8: a terrific person. He's a great human being. And I
- 14:45Speaker 8: think that's the key thing to the success of those
- 14:49Speaker 8: Mets teams and this Nick team today. The character of
- 14:51Speaker 8: the people, the comraderie, the ability to have each other's backs,
- 14:57Speaker 8: and the compatibility of all the people. Well, you know,
- 15:00Speaker 8: every team in sports, professional sports, it is talent.
- 15:04Speaker 6: You have to be talented to.
- 15:05Speaker 8: Make it to the pros, but to be a winner,
- 15:08Speaker 8: to be a champion. There's an extra gear that you need,
- 15:11Speaker 8: and people like Art and I'm very friendly with Royn
- 15:15Speaker 8: Schwabota from that team. Also, they have that extra gear
- 15:19Speaker 8: of empathy and comraderie and the ability to rise to
- 15:23Speaker 8: the occasion and it's very special. And they also have
- 15:28Speaker 8: a deep appreciation for other people and for what they accomplished,
- 15:32Speaker 8: and that's why I think they remembered after all of
- 15:34Speaker 8: these years.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Well, Tracy, I appreciate that statement in Art, I wanted
- 15:39Speaker 2: to point this out. You're sixty nine team. Nobody really
- 15:44Speaker 2: knew who Tom Seaver was yet, nobody really knew who
- 15:46Speaker 2: Art Shamsky was it, nobody really knew who Nolan Ryan
- 15:49Speaker 2: was yet, and you guys were the knicks of this year.
- 15:52Speaker 2: You were the hard working kind of you know, still
- 15:55Speaker 2: becoming known players that broke through on a year that
- 16:00Speaker 2: you guys weren't supposed to do it because you did
- 16:02Speaker 2: exactly what Tracy was saying.
- 16:04Speaker 7: You know, I think that's very true. I think there's
- 16:06Speaker 7: three reasons why that team is a resonation with fans
- 16:10Speaker 7: still to this day. Like I said fifty seven years later,
- 16:13Speaker 7: I think the fact that they were such a bad
- 16:15Speaker 7: team for so many years, and all of a sudden
- 16:17Speaker 7: we turned it around. And of course what I said before,
- 16:19Speaker 7: what was going on in the city and the country
- 16:22Speaker 7: and the world at the time, But I think people
- 16:24Speaker 7: related to us. We weren't well known, like you said,
- 16:29Speaker 7: and I think people just related to us. We were
- 16:31Speaker 7: everybody's friend kind of thing, for lack of a better phrase,
- 16:35Speaker 7: and I think that's what really made people feel close
- 16:38Speaker 7: to us. And again, I think the fact that we
- 16:42Speaker 7: beat an incredibly talented Baltimorial team. I think they won
- 16:45Speaker 7: one hundred and seven or one hundred and eight games
- 16:48Speaker 7: during the regular season that year, and we were nowhere
- 16:51Speaker 7: in their class in terms of people thinking we were
- 16:53Speaker 7: going to win. I have the distinction of making the
- 16:55Speaker 7: last out in Game one, which started out to be
- 16:58Speaker 7: the only game we lost in the world and then
- 17:00Speaker 7: we won the next four, but to big part of
- 17:02Speaker 7: that and to have people come up to me and say, God,
- 17:05Speaker 7: I remember this. And over the years, I've had so
- 17:07Speaker 7: many people say, Hey, I was at that last game
- 17:09Speaker 7: when you guys won the World Series, and probably one
- 17:12Speaker 7: hundred thousand people over the years have said they were there.
- 17:14Speaker 7: And I realized the ballpark only held fifty three thousand.
- 17:17Speaker 7: So whatever it is, if they were or they weren't,
- 17:20Speaker 7: it doesn't make any difference that they think they were there.
- 17:22Speaker 7: That's fine with me. But I you know, I played
- 17:24Speaker 7: thirteen years and nobody talks about the other twelve. It's
- 17:27Speaker 7: really about nineteen sixty nine. And again, I love talking
- 17:32Speaker 7: about it, being with it.
- 17:33Speaker 6: You know.
- 17:33Speaker 7: I try to live by a phrase that the great
- 17:36Speaker 7: Jackie Robinson once said, and I'm going to lose something
- 17:38Speaker 7: in the translation, basically just said life is only important
- 17:43Speaker 7: how it affects other people's lives. And when I meet
- 17:45Speaker 7: people who want to talk to me about that team
- 17:48Speaker 7: or talk to me about where they were at the time,
- 17:51Speaker 7: I just want to give them all the time in
- 17:52Speaker 7: the world because I respect what they have to say.
- 17:55Speaker 7: But for them to recognize me and have such an
- 17:58Speaker 7: impact on their life and it's still going on, and
- 18:01Speaker 7: that's the beauty.
- 18:01Speaker 6: And that's what I.
- 18:02Speaker 7: Think these guys, the players from the Knicks that are
- 18:04Speaker 7: going to realize this years from now, that what they did,
- 18:08Speaker 7: and in fact, it's a lot of young people too.
- 18:10Speaker 7: It's not just older people. Saw how many young people
- 18:12Speaker 7: got caught onto the Knicks this year and the years
- 18:15Speaker 7: from now, they'll remember what that meant to, how I
- 18:18Speaker 7: made people feel better about their lives. And I think
- 18:21Speaker 7: there's nothing better than that for me when I meet
- 18:23Speaker 7: people and they tell me, hey, I wasn't some doldrums,
- 18:27Speaker 7: I was having problems this that, whatever it might be,
- 18:29Speaker 7: you made me feel better about my life, about things
- 18:32Speaker 7: going on in my life. And that doesn't get any
- 18:34Speaker 7: better than that.
- 18:36Speaker 2: That's the great art Shamsky and the book is called
- 18:38Speaker 2: The Magnificent Season, subtitled How the Jets, Mets and Knicks
- 18:41Speaker 2: made sports history and uplifted a city and the country.
- 18:45Speaker 2: Got to take a quick break. We're going to come
- 18:47Speaker 2: right back. I might just add that the forwards on
- 18:49Speaker 2: this book read like a Hall of Fame as well,
- 18:51Speaker 2: Joe Namath, Tom Seaver, Bill Bradley, and the intro even
- 18:55Speaker 2: like Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Costas. You don't skimp
- 18:59Speaker 2: when you get Shompsky's book. You're going to get the
- 19:01Speaker 2: top shelf stook all the way through. Stay with us, coming.
- 19:04Speaker 6: Right back.
- 19:08Speaker 3: From New York.
- 19:10Speaker 6: It's Radio Night Life with Kevin McCullough.
- 19:13Speaker 2: Welcome back. It's Radio Night Live, the Fun Friday Edition.
- 19:16Speaker 2: We've got a studio packed with people. Tracy Neporn's here
- 19:19Speaker 2: with us, the fork, Art Shampsky is here, Christine Nicholas,
- 19:23Speaker 2: Kevin McCullough. Of course, in the.
- 19:25Speaker 3: Book is Nick Nicholas.
- 19:26Speaker 2: By the way, Nicholas is lurking in the backgrounds.
- 19:29Speaker 3: He's lurking in the studio.
- 19:31Speaker 2: The Magnificent Seasons is the name of the book. How
- 19:34Speaker 2: the Jets, Mets, and Knicks made sports history and uplifted
- 19:36Speaker 2: a city and the country. Art Shampsky, the toughest question
- 19:40Speaker 2: you're going to have to answer on this show tonight.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Your Mets have done it again, since the Knicks have
- 19:45Speaker 2: now done it again. Since when are the Jets ever
- 19:48Speaker 2: going to get another win at the big One?
- 19:51Speaker 7: Well, that's a question I can't answer, but I will
- 19:53Speaker 7: tell you that I am a diehard Jets fan because
- 19:56Speaker 7: we shared the stadium back in those days, and of
- 19:59Speaker 7: course was ends with all those Jet players that including
- 20:03Speaker 7: Joe Namath and really a wonderful group of guys. And
- 20:07Speaker 7: you know, you hope at the beginning of the season
- 20:11Speaker 7: leads to good things. That's been a long time, so
- 20:14Speaker 7: maybe it will happen.
- 20:15Speaker 8: You know.
- 20:15Speaker 7: It's it's strange things that happened. That's all I'm going
- 20:18Speaker 7: to say.
- 20:19Speaker 2: You got to just keep asking you what them you
- 20:20Speaker 2: believe in miracles? Yeah, that's the one that you got.
- 20:23Speaker 6: Well that's true, that's true. Or maybe we got a
- 20:26Speaker 6: fingers crossed.
- 20:27Speaker 5: Yeah, maybe the Jets can take a page out of
- 20:30Speaker 5: the next playbook. Right, and instead of instead of hiring
- 20:35Speaker 5: you know, superstar hotshots of yesteryear, because they always seem
- 20:39Speaker 5: to get them as they're aging, why don't you build
- 20:42Speaker 5: a team. And when I say a team, like make
- 20:45Speaker 5: sure everybody plays, everybody contributes, everybody feels part of it.
- 20:48Speaker 5: And I think that is the secret sauce here that
- 20:51Speaker 5: you see in the sixty nine Mets, You see it
- 20:53Speaker 5: in the in the in the twenty twenty six Knicks,
- 20:57Speaker 5: and you you know, if you want to go back
- 20:59Speaker 5: to the ninety fours, you also saw that in the Rangers.
- 21:02Speaker 5: It was a team and there's no I in team,
- 21:05Speaker 5: as they would say in Little league, right, but it
- 21:07Speaker 5: resonates today our Chamsky. You won in sixty nine at home,
- 21:14Speaker 5: the knixt one on the road. What do you think
- 21:17Speaker 5: would have happened the next one year at home?
- 21:20Speaker 7: Well, that's interesting because we had three celebrations. That was
- 21:24Speaker 7: the first year at the Vision play we wanted the
- 21:27Speaker 7: Vision at Shaye. We won the pennant and shame we
- 21:29Speaker 7: won the World Series and shape that field took some beating.
- 21:31Speaker 7: As a matter of fact, that Jets had to field
- 21:33Speaker 7: a game. I think they postponed it or put it
- 21:35Speaker 7: off for a while right after we won the World
- 21:38Speaker 7: Series because the field was torn up so much that
- 21:40Speaker 7: they had three celebrations when you went at home and
- 21:43Speaker 7: the fans were able to partake in it, you know,
- 21:46Speaker 7: it's just a wonderful experience. There was no crowd control
- 21:49Speaker 7: back then, so we had a difficult time getting off
- 21:52Speaker 7: the field.
- 21:52Speaker 6: But we were so caught.
- 21:54Speaker 7: Up in what was going on, and of course, for
- 21:57Speaker 7: the reasons we talked earlier, the Mets were known as
- 21:59Speaker 7: a lovable loser, bad team from the beginning, and then
- 22:03Speaker 7: all the things that were going on at the time
- 22:04Speaker 7: with the world and that that's what made it so
- 22:07Speaker 7: great that the Knicks, if they would have been home
- 22:09Speaker 7: and won, who knows, might have taken a little while.
- 22:12Speaker 6: For the Garden to recuperate.
- 22:14Speaker 2: But Tracy want in.
- 22:16Speaker 6: This right here.
- 22:17Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, it's always wonderful when you win at home,
- 22:20Speaker 8: because you know that's the place that you're most comfortable.
- 22:24Speaker 8: And but you know, just winning is the best thing.
- 22:27Speaker 8: I think the Jets in those days, they couldn't even
- 22:30Speaker 8: open the season at Shase Stadium until like seven or
- 22:32Speaker 8: eight weeks into the season because the Mets had first
- 22:35Speaker 8: DIBs on the ballpark and they didn't want the field
- 22:38Speaker 8: to be all dug up by football. But I just
- 22:41Speaker 8: want to add one other thing. I happen to have
- 22:43Speaker 8: Jets season tickets as well as Mets season tickets. So
- 22:45Speaker 8: this season, it's gonna it's gonna stand for just excel
- 22:49Speaker 8: this season.
- 22:50Speaker 6: That's what's gonna stand.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Well, let me ask. And there's there's rumors that Woody
- 22:55Speaker 2: Johnson wants to move them to Long Island. You like that,
- 22:58Speaker 2: You like that play make it the true New York
- 23:00Speaker 2: team in New.
- 23:02Speaker 6: Jersey, that's who they were originally.
- 23:03Speaker 7: So yeah, so yeah, I think there's a lot of
- 23:07Speaker 7: factors when it comes to certain things. It's what they
- 23:10Speaker 7: can get from whoever they would be dealing with in
- 23:13Speaker 7: Long Island as opposed to what they get in New Jersey.
- 23:16Speaker 7: You know, it's it does seem strange that the New
- 23:19Speaker 7: York Jets, but they play their games in New Jersey,
- 23:21Speaker 7: much like the Giants, I guess, but but to who knows.
- 23:24Speaker 7: You know, it always comes down to the money factors,
- 23:27Speaker 7: and we'll see what happens. But you know, I just
- 23:32Speaker 7: hope the Jets can kind of get off on a
- 23:35Speaker 7: good foot and then give you some hope because you
- 23:38Speaker 7: know us dieheard Jet fans really want to see some
- 23:41Speaker 7: positive things.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Well, and Tracy, you said you're a New Jersey guy,
- 23:44Speaker 2: so you vote no, you keep.
- 23:46Speaker 6: Them from metals.
- 23:47Speaker 8: Right, Listen, if you win, people are happy wherever you are.
- 23:51Speaker 6: That's right.
- 23:51Speaker 8: You don't win, it doesn't matter. You know, you can
- 23:53Speaker 8: be playing on Fifth Avenue and they find a way
- 23:56Speaker 8: to be unhappy. So winning solves everything. But I come
- 24:00Speaker 8: back to character, you know, and I agree with what
- 24:03Speaker 8: Christine said. You have to build a team. You have
- 24:04Speaker 8: to get the kind of guys on the team that
- 24:06Speaker 8: have each other's backs and that really are playing for
- 24:09Speaker 8: the name on the front of the jersey, not the
- 24:11Speaker 8: back of the jersey. And when you have a team
- 24:13Speaker 8: like that and everything, jealous, it's just beautiful art.
- 24:17Speaker 5: Champsky the book. Do you think that there will be
- 24:22Speaker 5: another chapter? You know in this wonderful book about uplifting
- 24:26Speaker 5: through sports.
- 24:27Speaker 2: Magnificence and seasons.
- 24:29Speaker 7: I know there's going to be another book. I just
- 24:31Speaker 7: hope sometimes relatively soon. I'm not sure exactly what to be,
- 24:34Speaker 7: but that book stands alone. I did over one hundred
- 24:37Speaker 7: interviews in that book for so many players from winning
- 24:40Speaker 7: teams losing teams that.
- 24:42Speaker 6: It was really a labor of love. I really enjoyed it.
- 24:45Speaker 7: And I still take it with me when I go
- 24:47Speaker 7: have these speaking engagements, and people still order for me
- 24:50Speaker 7: up on my website, Markshampsky dot com. But I don't
- 24:53Speaker 7: know if another I just know there's another book. I'm
- 24:56Speaker 7: just not sure if for it. There'll be a dindym
- 24:58Speaker 7: to the Magnificent Season. But you know, I always seem
- 25:01Speaker 7: like there's things I want to talk about and put
- 25:04Speaker 7: in books, and you know, just this time consuming, but
- 25:07Speaker 7: it's also a laborer love, and I just want to
- 25:10Speaker 7: want to start something new. And I'll talk to Tracy
- 25:13Speaker 7: because I'll ask him for his advice on this.
- 25:15Speaker 2: That'll give you another reason to come see us too,
- 25:17Speaker 2: Art we will look forward to Yeah, all right, tracypor
- 25:20Speaker 2: and Arshamsky, we're out of time, but thank you for
- 25:22Speaker 2: a great, great evening. Friends. Next we're going to go
- 25:25Speaker 2: to Lincoln Center for a few minutes. What a cool
- 25:28Speaker 2: show tonight. It's Radio Night Live.
- 25:34Speaker 4: What a little moonlight can do.
- 25:36Speaker 1: It's Radio night Life. Here's Kevin McCullough.
- 25:40Speaker 2: So glad you're back with us. It's the Friday edition
- 25:42Speaker 2: of Radio Night Live, which means it's the fun Friday edition. Christine.
- 25:47Speaker 2: When Ab told me that our next guest was scheduled,
- 25:50Speaker 2: I just about lost my head because there's so many
- 25:53Speaker 2: good things about this. But I'll let you do the
- 25:54Speaker 2: introductions and then I'll fanboy a little bit.
- 25:57Speaker 5: Okay, Well, we have a first timer for radio and
- 26:00Speaker 5: I live Clint Ramos, who's the artist in residence at
- 26:04Speaker 5: Lincoln Center. But this summer totally focusing on Lincoln Center
- 26:08Speaker 5: summer for the city. You are the visual director, so Clint, welcome,
- 26:12Speaker 5: and you've got so much going on at Lincoln Center
- 26:17Speaker 5: outdoors indoors. How do you keep it all together? And
- 26:21Speaker 5: tell us more about what a visual director does?
- 26:24Speaker 9: Hi?
- 26:24Speaker 4: Christine?
- 26:25Speaker 7: Hi?
- 26:25Speaker 4: Kevin? Well, yes, indeed everything that you say is true.
- 26:31Speaker 4: But I basically oversee all of the visuals and all
- 26:36Speaker 4: of the performance spaces for the summer for the city festival.
- 26:40Speaker 4: And that includes creating the outdoor spaces like the Big
- 26:43Speaker 4: Dance Floor and Josie Robertson Plaza, you know, the performance
- 26:47Speaker 4: spaces and Hers Plaza, all of the sort of public
- 26:51Speaker 4: sculpture that we do, all of the gathering spaces, this seating,
- 26:55Speaker 4: all of it, you know, down to designing the food truck.
- 27:01Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:02Speaker 5: So I noticed the food trucks are going to be
- 27:04Speaker 5: representing many different cultures because this summer you're dedicating a
- 27:08Speaker 5: real international flare to Lincoln Center.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Yeah, so tell us about what we can expect.
- 27:16Speaker 4: Well, there are hundreds of performances that are free or
- 27:21Speaker 4: choose what you pay, and that's across disciplines like dance, theater, music,
- 27:30Speaker 4: and very different kinds of music.
- 27:32Speaker 6: Right.
- 27:32Speaker 4: And we're also we have we continue our tradition of
- 27:34Speaker 4: social dance, which is like salsa swing dance, all outdoors,
- 27:40Speaker 4: all in the plaza.
- 27:41Speaker 2: And this year we've.
- 27:43Speaker 4: For the prior years we've had this you know, ten
- 27:46Speaker 4: foot mirror ball on top of the fountain.
- 27:50Speaker 6: We don't have that. This year.
- 27:51Speaker 4: We're kind of transforming the plaza into what I would
- 27:55Speaker 4: say this kind of like a movement space, right, And
- 27:59Speaker 4: so you have these. I've installed this kind of elaborate
- 28:04Speaker 4: fabric sculpture above. So now the entire plaza where the
- 28:08Speaker 4: fountains is shaded, so it's a great place to hang
- 28:12Speaker 4: out during the day.
- 28:14Speaker 6: That is great.
- 28:15Speaker 4: Yeah, it's really it's really amazing, and you could we
- 28:18Speaker 4: invite everybody to have lunch there, you know, have a
- 28:21Speaker 4: picnic there because the ground is also covered. It's it's
- 28:24Speaker 4: you know, we've covered it with with the dance floor tiles.
- 28:29Speaker 4: And the theme this year is really gold and wood
- 28:33Speaker 4: and the shifting sands of time.
- 28:37Speaker 3: Oh fun, I can't wait to see it. I love it.
- 28:39Speaker 3: I love the silent disco that you have as well.
- 28:42Speaker 3: I was on a performance.
- 28:44Speaker 5: I came out and Kevin, I saw these folks with
- 28:46Speaker 5: the headphones on but there I couldn't hear the media.
- 28:49Speaker 2: You didn't join them? Did you?
- 28:51Speaker 3: So much fun?
- 28:51Speaker 9: I wanted to to me, that's one of the most
- 28:56Speaker 9: special things about summer for the city because, as you said,
- 28:58Speaker 9: you know, people are coming for the Metropolitan Opera or
- 29:01Speaker 9: from the Philharmonic, and you know, they basically.
- 29:05Speaker 4: Collide into the folks who are either dancing salsa or
- 29:08Speaker 4: sewing or those silent riscos. And a lot of them
- 29:12Speaker 4: actually just join in, like, oh we can have you know,
- 29:15Speaker 4: thirty minutes of like cardio. But it's a wonderful, but
- 29:18Speaker 4: it's a very New York thing, you know what I mean.
- 29:20Speaker 2: It's like, does it get more New York in terms
- 29:24Speaker 2: of the arts than Lincoln Center. I think anybody that's
- 29:26Speaker 2: ever come to visit my bride and I since we've
- 29:29Speaker 2: lived here, you know, everybody wants to at least drive
- 29:32Speaker 2: past it, go step on the property somewhere. And for
- 29:35Speaker 2: you know, we've been here twenty five going on twenty
- 29:38Speaker 2: six years. We can't get enough of Lincoln Center. It's
- 29:42Speaker 2: just it's just our favorite place in the whole city.
- 29:44Speaker 2: And the interesting thing about what you do these last
- 29:48Speaker 2: five summers is you're getting people by the millions on
- 29:50Speaker 2: the campus. I've read one point six million people have
- 29:54Speaker 2: enjoyed your work over the last five years, So that's
- 29:56Speaker 2: really cool. One of your other main duties there as
- 30:01Speaker 2: the Artist in residence is you're the curator of the
- 30:03Speaker 2: American Songbook. And there may be people listening that don't
- 30:07Speaker 2: know what that refers to, but what does that speak
- 30:11Speaker 2: to in you? And why did you take that on?
- 30:13Speaker 2: And as an artist in residence. What does it mean
- 30:15Speaker 2: to you to be able to curate this truly piece
- 30:18Speaker 2: of American history.
- 30:20Speaker 4: Yeah, now, I thank you for asking that. I think well,
- 30:22Speaker 4: it says set an honor when I'm Chanta fake asked
- 30:26Speaker 4: me to curate the series. First of all, it was
- 30:30Speaker 4: overwhelming because I've been a fan like.
- 30:33Speaker 6: You for a long time.
- 30:34Speaker 4: But American Songbook is a series of concerts, you know,
- 30:38Speaker 4: or performances that happened across our venues, which is Jazz
- 30:42Speaker 4: at Lincoln Center, Gefen Hall, Alistully Hall, the David Rubinstein Atrium,
- 30:47Speaker 4: and we invite folks who are and it's really a
- 30:51Speaker 4: big embrace, right, Like it's from musical theater to pop
- 30:54Speaker 4: to jazz, and we invite artists to meditate on a
- 30:59Speaker 4: theme for that year and create, you know, a concert
- 31:03Speaker 4: really well, this past May, we've had nine concerts you know,
- 31:08Speaker 4: across all of those venues and this theme is this
- 31:12Speaker 4: year's songbooks theme is called Echoes of an inheritance, right,
- 31:16Speaker 4: because of how we inherit all of these musical traditions
- 31:19Speaker 4: really and so it's very exciting. It's a chance for
- 31:22Speaker 4: New Yorkers to really sit and have enjoy a concert
- 31:25Speaker 4: that's again free and choose what you pay.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Which Christine, I don't know how many other big cities
- 31:30Speaker 2: do that, but to have the kind of premiere arts
- 31:34Speaker 2: space offer anything along those lines. I mean I was
- 31:38Speaker 2: in London over Christmas at Royal Albert. That's not the
- 31:41Speaker 2: case there. I mean Lincoln Center is head and shoulders
- 31:44Speaker 2: unlike any other place on the planet.
- 31:46Speaker 4: No, it's literally the gift to New Yorkers, right, it
- 31:49Speaker 4: is ours, and it's like, I'm very proud to be
- 31:52Speaker 4: a New Yorker, I'm very proud to be you know,
- 31:54Speaker 4: an American and having this institution because you know, as
- 31:58Speaker 4: we all know, there's a there's a lack of state
- 32:02Speaker 4: support for you know, on many levels of government in
- 32:06Speaker 4: the arts. But Lincoln Center really is what I would say,
- 32:10Speaker 4: our state performance center, right, because it also holds all
- 32:15Speaker 4: of these like partner institutions like the Metropolitan Opera, you know,
- 32:19Speaker 4: both American Ballet Theater and New York City Ballet, the
- 32:23Speaker 4: New York l you know, Lincoln Center Theater. So it
- 32:28Speaker 4: is what I would say, it's a gift. And this
- 32:32Speaker 4: is an example, you know, summer for the city. Every
- 32:36Speaker 4: summer we have between two hundred to three hundred performances happened.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Wow, and that's performing arts centers can boast that they
- 32:44Speaker 5: have two hundred to three hundred in a year. And
- 32:48Speaker 5: now Clint Ramos, you have it ninety. And we haven't
- 32:52Speaker 5: even mentioned to congratulations for rag Time, which won the
