- 0:04Speaker 1: My father taught me many things.
- 0:05Speaker 2: You know what they say. He taught me, keep your
- 0:08Speaker 2: friends close, but your enemies close. Time to check in
- 0:12Speaker 2: on the team down south. They have done absolutely nothing wrong.
- 0:16Speaker 1: But they're blue.
- 0:17Speaker 2: This is the Red and Blue on the.

- 0:46Speaker 3: paid off. We're in the final days of their summer

- 1:03Speaker 3: got you an extra $ 500. Head down there to Murdoch

- 1:14Speaker 3: Don't have exactly what you're looking for in the right color,
- 1:17Speaker 3: the right trim package, they will find it for you.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Tell them OC sent you. Or tell them Jerem Jordan
- 1:23Speaker 2: sent you. Hi, Jerem. Welcome to the show. How are you?
- 1:26Speaker 1: Tell them I sent you and get another 500. No,
- 1:29Speaker 1: I'm just kidding. That's not part of the problem. But
- 1:31Speaker 1: you can try.
- 1:32Speaker 2: You can try. Just say, hey, Jerem told me. They
- 1:35Speaker 2: might honor it.
- 1:35Speaker 1: You never know. We don't know who this Jerem is,
- 1:38Speaker 1: but yeah.
- 1:39Speaker 3: Okay, Jerem, we've been talking a little offensive line at
- 1:42Speaker 3: the University of Utah because it's one of the big questions.
- 1:45Speaker 2: With this year's roster.
- 1:47Speaker 3: And I like to do these over-unders where we predict
- 1:49Speaker 3: final stats for the season before we get any gameplay.
- 1:53Speaker 3: This one I feel like is important for Utah. It's
- 1:56Speaker 3: going to be important for BYU as well, because similar
- 1:59Speaker 3: to Utah, they got a mobile quarterback. They've actually got
- 2:02Speaker 3: a lot more returning experience on their offensive line. And
- 2:05Speaker 3: of course, if you could protect your QB, he can
- 2:07Speaker 3: throw the ball downfield to the wide receivers and then
- 2:10Speaker 3: your offense starts humming. I set the over-under for Utah
- 2:13Speaker 3: football at 19.5 sacks total on the season. That would
- 2:17Speaker 3: have been good enough for top five last year in
- 2:20Speaker 3: the Big 12 Conference.
- 2:23Speaker 2: Where would you put BYU?
- 2:25Speaker 3: Where's a reasonable number for BYU's offense and the fans
- 2:28Speaker 3: to expect? If we give up this many, that's probably
- 2:32Speaker 3: the max. Less than that will be okay. More than that,
- 2:35Speaker 3: we're starting to question things.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Probably sub 20. So last year was 16, which is
- 2:41Speaker 1: a pretty low number. BYU did a nice job protecting Bear.
- 2:43Speaker 1: And Bear is very versatile and mobile where he can
- 2:46Speaker 1: get out of stuff and at least scramble forward. He's
- 2:49Speaker 1: good about keeping his eyes downfield. He doesn't just bail early.
- 2:53Speaker 1: BYU really emphasized the pass game in Paul Camp because
- 2:56Speaker 1: they were pretty comfortable with kind of where the run
- 2:58Speaker 1: game is. Although I talked to the offensive coordinator, Aaron
- 3:01Speaker 1: Roderick today. And he said, today we ran a lot
- 3:03Speaker 1: just to make sure they felt comfortable with kind of
- 3:05Speaker 1: the very end of fall camp here. So I'll go,
- 3:07Speaker 1: I'll go sub 20. I just think BYU is going
- 3:09Speaker 1: to be in a lot of short third down distances
- 3:12Speaker 1: because of the tremendous run game and good tight ends.
- 3:16Speaker 1: So yeah, give me sub 20, man. Yeah.
- 3:18Speaker 3: I mean, so similar number, if we said it for
- 3:20Speaker 3: BYU at 19 and a half, I think most people
- 3:22Speaker 3: are going to take the under and think that they
- 3:24Speaker 3: won't hit 20. That's, kind of where a lot of
- 3:26Speaker 3: Utah fans are netting out right at that number. And obviously,
- 3:30Speaker 3: if you're BYU, given the returning talent on the offensive line,
- 3:34Speaker 3: and there are just fewer questions there, right?
- 3:36Speaker 1: Yeah, you're not replacing two first-rounders. That's an incredible feat, right,
- 3:42Speaker 1: last year from Utah. Three starters are back, and the
- 3:44Speaker 1: two guys that you kind of plug in played a
- 3:47Speaker 1: lot anyway, Sonny Macassini and Kyle Svarchuk. So, yeah, you've
- 3:50Speaker 1: got Bruce Mitchell, one of the best centers in Utah, America,
- 3:53Speaker 1: Andrew Gentry could be a day three tackle taken. And
- 3:57Speaker 1: then Paki Fina comes over from Washington. He played a
- 3:59Speaker 1: lot of guards. His left tackle's new, but he's played
- 4:01Speaker 1: a lot. And so, yeah, it's a group the BYU
- 4:05Speaker 1: Saints can block for L.J. Martin to get a bunch
- 4:07Speaker 1: of yards again.
- 4:08Speaker 3: All right, so we're very excited to have real football
- 4:13Speaker 3: to talk about this weekend. Next week, when you join
- 4:15Speaker 3: me for some Red and Blue, we're going to get
- 4:17Speaker 3: to react to at least one Big 12 game. opponent
- 4:21Speaker 3: to TCU and what they looked like. Uh, that's going
- 4:24Speaker 3: to be wonderful. But right now, these weird storylines are still.
- 4:27Speaker 2: Dominating college sports.
- 4:29Speaker 3: And, uh, today's battle is being fought again, legally over
- 4:34Speaker 3: eligibility being granted to former NFL players or guys that
- 4:38Speaker 3: were on a roster or got cut from a roster, whatever,
- 4:41Speaker 3: returning to college football uh your thoughts on how that
- 4:46Speaker 3: fits especially through the byu lens who they're okay with
- 4:50Speaker 3: it on the basketball front what about football.
- 4:53Speaker 1: Yeah it's interesting right i i kind of wish i
- 4:56Speaker 1: would have at least taken a law class or two
- 4:58Speaker 1: just so i could speak a little better on all
- 5:01Speaker 1: this all this legalese with sports it's wild right so
- 5:05Speaker 1: i'm looking at it uh a couple of different ways
- 5:08Speaker 1: one is um is a preseason game where you're like
- 5:12Speaker 1: actually in camp best play the season that grossly different
- 5:16Speaker 1: from say a summer league game, which is more like OTAs.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Like the timing is interesting, right? Cause the season's about
- 5:22Speaker 1: to start. That feels like it's too late. It feels
- 5:25Speaker 1: like it's too late to suddenly add a dude from
- 5:28Speaker 1: the NFL in the case of a certain Michigan state
- 5:31Speaker 1: commitment for BYU men's basketball. Obviously I want this dude
- 5:34Speaker 1: to play for BYU. He's awesome. He's going to help
- 5:37Speaker 1: this team a lot. He's going to be a stud. selfishly,
- 5:40Speaker 1: I don't want it to have anything to do with
- 5:42Speaker 1: the NBA guys. And it's mainly just these fifth year
- 5:44Speaker 1: guys from 22 that we're talking about. This isn't going
- 5:47Speaker 1: to be a consistent issue. I wouldn't imagine, although I
- 5:50Speaker 1: wouldn't put it past anybody to just try and get
- 5:52Speaker 1: some injunction in whatever state to selfishly be able to
- 5:56Speaker 1: play in the future. But it feels like this is
- 5:58Speaker 1: kind of limited to this year. Maybe not. The NFL
- 6:01Speaker 1: one feels like it's just too late. The NBA, we've
- 6:04Speaker 1: no one's playing preseason NBA. We've got a few months. Like,
- 6:07Speaker 1: Fifth-year guys out of college, maybe that's just because I
- 6:10Speaker 1: want a certain Michigan State guy to play. But I
- 6:12Speaker 1: guess I feel differently about the NFL guys versus the
- 6:15Speaker 1: NBA guys. And that doesn't pertain to BYU. They did
- 6:17Speaker 1: not pick up a single kind of new fifth-year guy
- 6:20Speaker 1: late add. Not a single one was added. They kind
- 6:22Speaker 1: of had their team locked and loaded, and we're good
- 6:25Speaker 1: to go.
- 6:29Speaker 3: As it pertains to the basketball front, and you're referring
- 6:32Speaker 3: to Jackson Kohler, who, of course, is– The guy we
- 6:36Speaker 3: saw in a jazz uniform, but also is going to
- 6:38Speaker 3: be in a BYU uniform, at least as of today.
- 6:42Speaker 3: Looks like he's going to be eligible to be in
- 6:43Speaker 3: a BYU uniform for this upcoming season. And we get
- 6:47Speaker 3: the announcement late yesterday that Noam Yaakov for Utah is
- 6:53Speaker 3: not going to be eligible. And RJ Luis at LSU,
- 6:57Speaker 3: who was traded in the NBA, he is eligible right
- 7:00Speaker 3: now at LSU.
- 7:01Speaker 1: And look, I..
- 7:05Speaker 2: It's easy for you're traded.
- 7:06Speaker 1: It's over, right?
- 7:08Speaker 3: If you were in a trade, it feels like if
- 7:10Speaker 3: you were involved in a trade, you can't play college
- 7:12Speaker 3: sports anymore.
- 7:13Speaker 2: You're involved in an NBA trade, but.
- 7:15Speaker 1: It's almost laughable. Like I'm, I'm literally laughing out loud
- 7:18Speaker 1: because of how silly this is.
- 7:20Speaker 3: But like, if you're a Baton Rouge district judge, you're
- 7:23Speaker 3: just like, no, I want this guy to play. And
- 7:26Speaker 3: all of this falls under the umbrella or the attempted
- 7:29Speaker 3: umbrella of this protect college sports act. That would would
- 7:33Speaker 3: supersede all these district and local judges being able to
- 7:36Speaker 3: make these injunctions or grant these temporary restraining orders. At
- 7:40Speaker 3: least we think I'm not any more of a legal
- 7:42Speaker 3: expert than you.
- 7:44Speaker 2: But on the.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Basketball front, on the football front, on the whatever else front,
- 7:48Speaker 3: are we are we finally reaching a point where it's like, OK,
- 7:53Speaker 3: this government intervention truly is needed at this point or
- 7:57Speaker 3: we're going to. shake apart the fabric of college sports
- 8:01Speaker 3: in a way that alienates too many people?
- 8:04Speaker 1: Who's in charge has always been the question, right? Even
- 8:07Speaker 1: when the NCAA was running, it was like, are they
- 8:09Speaker 1: in charge? Do they have power? There's no front-facing commissioner.
- 8:14Speaker 1: You know, the SEC and Big Ten are kind of
- 8:16Speaker 1: posturing to be in that. Like, it's very interesting. And
- 8:18Speaker 1: the fact that the SEC and Big Ten are talking about, hey,
- 8:21Speaker 1: we might make rules against this. And then, you know,
- 8:25Speaker 1: conversations and reports out there from Ross Dellinger So sports
- 8:28Speaker 1: about like, hey, you know, Big 12 and ACC might
- 8:31Speaker 1: do this. The Power 4 might do this. So we'll
- 8:34Speaker 1: see kind of who steps in. Until they actually pass
- 8:37Speaker 1: that bill, you know, which they might in like a
- 8:39Speaker 1: month from now, then, yeah, who's in charge and what's legal? Like,
- 8:44Speaker 1: as long as it is allowed, I understand why people
- 8:47Speaker 1: are trying. Like, it's within the rules right now. Is
- 8:51Speaker 1: it chaotic? Is it crazy? Is it out of hand? Absolutely.
- 8:54Speaker 1: We've got to figure this out, man.
- 8:57Speaker 3: The aforementioned Week Zero game happens in Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland.
- 9:02Speaker 3: 10 a.m. Mountain Time kickoff, North Carolina, TCU. Obviously, the
- 9:08Speaker 3: by extension intrigue for the local fans here is that
- 9:11Speaker 3: TCU on the schedule for BYU, on the schedule for Utah.
- 9:16Speaker 3: means that we need to know a little something about
- 9:19Speaker 3: this team. And they, to me, are one of the
- 9:21Speaker 3: squads that could kind of sneak up on the rest
- 9:24Speaker 3: of the Big 12, not being talked about a ton
- 9:26Speaker 3: in the preseason. It's kind of been BYU, Texas Tech, Utah, Houston, TCU,
- 9:33Speaker 3: a bit more of an afterthought for a lot of people.
- 9:35Speaker 3: How closely will you be paying attention to this North
- 9:38Speaker 3: Carolina-TCU matchup?
- 9:40Speaker 1: Listen, I'm the OC for the Mapleton first and second
- 9:43Speaker 1: grade tackle football game. And my son's a quarterback. So
- 9:46Speaker 1: that's my real focus this Saturday morning, making sure I
- 9:49Speaker 1: can get our hopefully line to block. They haven't really
- 9:52Speaker 1: blocked yet in the two games we had. So it's
- 9:54Speaker 1: going to be a lot of quick games. Sean, a
- 9:56Speaker 1: lot of just dump outs, hitches, little outs. You know,
- 10:00Speaker 1: we're not going deep that much. After that, when I
- 10:02Speaker 1: get home, and I'm coaching a volleyball game as well,
- 10:05Speaker 1: then I will watch Jaden Craig and the Harvard transfer
- 10:08Speaker 1: and TCU kind of get after and see what they are.
- 10:10Speaker 1: They have a new OC in Gordon Sammis who came
- 10:13Speaker 1: over from UConn. They had a nice year. They're going
- 10:15Speaker 1: to be more balanced. Like TCU with that always– Pretty
- 10:19Speaker 1: good defense and all the athletes they have. And they've
- 10:22Speaker 1: won 18 games last year. It's like they've been sneaky
- 10:25Speaker 1: pretty good. Can they get over the hump this year
- 10:27Speaker 1: and actually challenge for a conference title? I'm not so sure,
- 10:30Speaker 1: but I do think that they will be a challenge,
- 10:32Speaker 1: especially BYU in week four. That's a big game. It
- 10:36Speaker 1: goes 2-4-6-8-9 for BYU in the biggest games. Week two
- 10:41Speaker 1: is Arizona at TCU in early October is a big one.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Week six, Notre Dame. BYU has to be ready for that.
- 10:48Speaker 1: And Craig's the guy that played a ton at Harvard,
- 10:50Speaker 1: comes over, and he's the guy now taking over for Hoover.
- 10:53Speaker 1: He's at Indiana. So, yeah, I'm very intrigued. You know,
- 10:57Speaker 1: hoping TCU has a tremendous season and has, you know,
- 11:00Speaker 1: a couple losses in the league to, you know, BYU
- 11:02Speaker 1: and Utah here. That'd be great. But I do think
- 11:04Speaker 1: they could buy for kind of a top six Big
- 11:07Speaker 1: 12 spot this year.
- 11:09Speaker 3: The Senior Bowl watch list.
- 11:11Speaker 2: It's watch list season, obviously. Bear Bachmeier, congrats.
- 11:14Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 11:14Speaker 3: Davey O'Brien, watch list. Bruce Mitchell's on the Remington watch list,
- 11:20Speaker 3: if I'm not mistaken.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. Remington sounds the most English, so I love
- 11:24Speaker 1: that one. The Remington watch list, yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 3: I'm actually very pleased with the committee for the watch,
- 11:31Speaker 3: the Remington award, because this year I think there were
- 11:33Speaker 3: 30 guys on the list. When I was doing Pac-12 radio,
- 11:37Speaker 3: there were 70 guys on the list one year.
- 11:40Speaker 2: I was like, that's... Did you see.
- 11:41Speaker 1: The Joe Moore award watch list yesterday?
- 11:43Speaker 2: I did not.
- 11:45Speaker 1: They did every... So, best offensive line. They did every
- 11:47Speaker 1: single FBS team, all 138th. We're on it. We're watching
- 11:52Speaker 1: every single team. It was so good.
- 11:55Speaker 3: I actually love that. A little tongue-in-cheek. Like, this is
- 11:58Speaker 3: our watch list. It's literally everyone.
- 12:00Speaker 2: That's great.
- 12:01Speaker 1: As soon as they say congrats, you made it.
- 12:03Speaker 2: Well done.
- 12:04Speaker 3: The senior bowl watch list, though, named six BYU players
- 12:09Speaker 3: as top 300, top in their group, in their position group.
- 12:12Speaker 3: And it is a lot of the same names we
- 12:15Speaker 3: have been talking about all offseason. Isaiah Glasker, Evan Johnson, L.J. Martin,
- 12:19Speaker 3: Faletau Satawala, Keanu Tanavasa, Kedu Luwave. Anyone going to force
- 12:26Speaker 3: their name into these types of conversations by the end
- 12:30Speaker 3: of the year?
- 12:31Speaker 1: I think Bruce Mitchell we're just talking about. I do
- 12:34Speaker 1: think he's a top five, top ten center in college football.
- 12:36Speaker 1: I think he could very well be drafted. 6'4, kind
- 12:39Speaker 1: of a taller center, 3.05. Great experience, a lot of winning.
- 12:45Speaker 1: Dude was PFF, highly graded. He was all Big 12
- 12:50Speaker 1: last year. He's not lost a step. If anything, he'll
- 12:54Speaker 1: hopefully be better. So I do think Bruce Mitchell was
- 12:56Speaker 1: kind of the one where I was like, hey, I
- 12:57Speaker 1: think he should be on there. Everybody else I agreed with.
- 13:02Speaker 3: The rest of the slate before BYU actually takes the
- 13:07Speaker 3: field next Saturday. We'll have you on next week so
- 13:10Speaker 3: we can talk a little bit more about some of
- 13:12Speaker 3: these things. Obviously, BYU is going to dominate attention for
- 13:16Speaker 3: you and all the folks involved and the fans of
- 13:19Speaker 3: that BYU team. I'm sure you want to get a
- 13:23Speaker 3: sense of Utah, but you're probably not going to be like,
- 13:26Speaker 3: whatever they are against Idaho is what they're going to
- 13:28Speaker 3: be for the rest of the season. What games before
- 13:31Speaker 3: BYU kicks off have the most of your attention?
- 13:35Speaker 1: Yeah, definitely UNC and TCU, like you mentioned. Intrigued by
- 13:41Speaker 1: just about everybody in the league. Week zero, week one,
- 13:45Speaker 1: I'm stoked. There's a handful of good games out there. Colorado,
- 13:49Speaker 1: Georgia Tech is kind of a sneaky one. I don't
- 13:53Speaker 1: know that they're going to be that good, but I
- 13:54Speaker 1: am intrigued. Oregon State playing Houston. It's interesting. Oregon State
- 13:58Speaker 1: is going to be BYU's season opener next year. But
- 14:00Speaker 1: Oregon State played Houston and Texas Tech in the first
- 14:03Speaker 1: couple weeks. So I'm interested to kind of see Big 12.
- 14:07Speaker 1: Their Baylor-Auburn is intriguing in week one to me. I
- 14:10Speaker 1: like that one a lot. Yeah, that's kind of it.
- 14:14Speaker 1: There's not too many kind of barn burners there. There's
- 14:17Speaker 1: kind of 12 or 13 non-conference games total against the
- 14:20Speaker 1: Power 4 opponents. That intrigued me. And, yeah, I think
- 14:24Speaker 1: BYU-Notre Dame ends up being probably your most visible, high-end
- 14:27Speaker 1: kind of top one, two top 15 teams preseason. That'll
- 14:30Speaker 1: be interesting in week six. But, yeah, Big 12's got
- 14:34Speaker 1: to show up in these non-conference games. There's probably a
- 14:36Speaker 1: certain amount of games that they need to have some
- 14:39Speaker 1: good wins. You know, Oklahoma State, if they can compete
- 14:41Speaker 1: with Oregon, well, I think that'd say a lot. You know,
- 14:44Speaker 1: Utah with Arkansas is going to be interesting, notably. So, yeah,
- 14:48Speaker 1: I'm excited. Listen, after covering BYU's in Independence, where you're,
- 14:52Speaker 1: you're just like on a farm by yourself out in
- 14:54Speaker 1: the middle of nowhere, if you will. Now, like being
- 14:56Speaker 1: in like the rich neighborhood, if you will, it's going,
- 14:59Speaker 1: Oh yeah, all the neighbors. I hope that everyone's good.
- 15:02Speaker 1: We argue about HLA. Like, like it's just the swimming pool. Yeah.
- 15:06Speaker 1: The grass was too tall, whatever. It's fun to just
- 15:08Speaker 1: be team big 12 and BYU hasn't had that. And
- 15:11Speaker 1: now it's year four. We're getting used to it. And like, it's,
- 15:13Speaker 1: it's been cool. Cause the league, the league needs to
- 15:15Speaker 1: try and get two teams into the playoffs. One obviously
- 15:19Speaker 1: is going to happen, but, It'd be nice if two emerged,
- 15:22Speaker 1: and they have to have great regular seasons, and those
- 15:24Speaker 1: non-conference games will be a big factor at the very end.
- 15:30Speaker 3: Last thing before I let you go, when we talk
- 15:33Speaker 3: a week from today, will either the NCAA or the
- 15:37Speaker 3: conferences or the U.S. government or an executive order or something,
- 15:42Speaker 3: will there have been a meaningful stoppage to NFL players
- 15:46Speaker 3: returning to college football by this time next week?
- 15:50Speaker 1: It's a good question. I wonder if the leagues themselves
- 15:53Speaker 1: will kind of govern that. And will the big 12
- 15:55Speaker 1: feel like, Hey, we need to do what those leagues
- 15:58Speaker 1: are doing. Cause if you don't, you could get a
- 16:00Speaker 1: bunch of those guys in your league. Do you then
- 16:03Speaker 1: become kind of the, the, do you get beat up
- 16:06Speaker 1: by those leagues in the court of public opinion? You know, legally,
- 16:09Speaker 1: what does that look like? So it could be, could
- 16:12Speaker 1: be very interesting. It just feels so late in the game. Like,
- 16:15Speaker 1: BYU literally tomorrow is prepping for Utah Tech in game one. Like,
- 16:19Speaker 1: you can't just add somebody suddenly and feel like, yeah,
- 16:22Speaker 1: we did everyone a solid here that has been here
