- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:03culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:06media, the creator economy, and the digital space.
- 0:09Every Monday through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:17All right, you guys might be able to tell from my voice, but
- 0:19I think I'm actually getting a little bit sick.
- 0:22Of course, I feel like finally everything calmed down for the
- 0:26business. This week has felt so much more
- 0:29like normal and manageable for me and now I feel like I am
- 0:32getting sick. But it is winter here in
- 0:34Australia and that's just kind of how it goes.
- 0:37So anyways, I love how lately I'm getting like DMS and
- 0:41comments of people asking me to cover different things.
- 0:45I feel like you guys are helping me do my job.
- 0:49It's amazing. So one of the stories from
- 0:51today, the first story that I'm going to share was requested by
- 0:55one of you guys. It is a wild story.
- 0:58And then I have two others. So we have a full three stories,
- 1:02full roster for you guys again today.
- 1:04OK, let's just get right into it.
- 1:06So the first story that I have for you guys is Raw Beauty
- 1:11Christie is being accused of building an anti LGBTQIA
- 1:16homeschool on her homestead. So as I mentioned, this was
- 1:21requested by a viewer. When I saw this comment on
- 1:23YouTube a couple days ago, I was like excuse me?
- 1:27And then I looked into it and I was like, Oh my God, like this
- 1:30is not a joke. Like I was like, is this a
- 1:32troll? What is happening?
- 1:34OK so for anyone that doesn't know Raw beauty Christie, she's
- 1:38an OG beauty YouTube. She got really popular years ago
- 1:41because she was a self-taught makeup artist and she is just
- 1:45kind of like a regular person. I don't know how to describe it,
- 1:49but like she came up in the era of Jaclyn Hill, Laura Lee, like
- 1:53these larger than life influencers.
- 1:55And she was just so mellow and chill.
- 1:58She didn't change when she got lots of followers.
- 2:00She seemed super down to earth. And yeah, it was just like, kind
- 2:04of a pleasure to follow someone who felt really, like, normal
- 2:07and relatable. Another thing to note about her
- 2:09is, I mean, I have watched her for years and years, and she did
- 2:13seem very progressive at the beginning of her career.
- 2:17She seemed, like, very rooted in reality, very down to earth.
- 2:21So in late 2019, Christy and her husband moved to a property in
- 2:25the woods. And this is when she got into
- 2:29some crunchy hobbies like homesteading.
- 2:32So I think you guys probably know where this is going because
- 2:34we have spoken a lot about the crunchy to alt right pipeline on
- 2:38this podcast. But for those who are unfamiliar
- 2:41with the term crunchy, it refers to a subculture defined by the
- 2:44pursuit of slow living, Wellness, independence, and
- 2:48traditional aesthetics. The cultural practices of
- 2:51crunchy living can range from avoiding food dyes and additives
- 2:55to refusing to vaccinate your children.
- 2:58The crunchy to alt right pipeline has been documented in
- 3:00recent years as the rise of TikTok has brought about this
- 3:03new wave of crunchy influencers infiltrating the online
- 3:07zeitgeist. One of the most popular and
- 3:10renowned articles on this is by Kathleen belew for the Atlantic.
- 3:14She writes quote. The crunchy to alt right
- 3:16pipeline conversation gives us a chance to see something crucial
- 3:19that is often lost in depictions of right wing formations.
- 3:23The white power movement is not just men marching in the street,
- 3:26it's also women sharing cultural materials through social
- 3:29networks. Women and the cultural materials
- 3:32upon which they exert their most intense influence are where we
- 3:35can see this as a social movement.
- 3:38So Blue argues that the crunchy subculture is a form of direct
- 3:42recruitment for the white power movement.
- 3:45Once someone goes crunchy, they are more vulnerable to fear
- 3:48mongering and conspiracies given their existing distrust in
- 3:52government, medicine and other institutions.
- 3:55So something that may have influenced Christie to enter
- 3:59this pipeline is that she has been very open about her
- 4:03complicated health problems, her complex mental health problems
- 4:07and that she has health anxiety. And I think if you spend years
- 4:12going to doctors who can't, you know, give you a proper
- 4:15diagnosis or can't, like, properly help you and treat you,
- 4:20I can see how, you know, it like, makes sense that you would
- 4:22get more skeptical of medicine, I suppose.
- 4:26So I feel like that is possibly just speculating where that
- 4:30could have started from. So anyways, people on Reddit
- 4:33have noted over the years how Christie has felt like she is
- 4:37essentially like more and more on this pipeline, like entering
- 4:39this pipeline. So there's definitely been a few
- 4:41red flags. But over the weekend,
- 4:43speculation that Christie was on the alt right pipeline was
- 4:46seemingly confirmed. And when I say confirmed, I mean
- 4:49she didn't confirm it. I want to make that clear.
- 4:50This is like alleged. So a Reddit poster with the
- 4:54username Mafia girls Fashion compiled a whole post of
- 4:57evidence and a lot of it did come from stuff this weekend.
- 5:01So Christy did AQ and A where she said she will be
- 5:04homeschooling her son with a homeschool Co-op.
- 5:07Christy's sister, who has featured on her channel in the
- 5:10past, started a homeschool group with a friend.
- 5:13This is presumably the homeschool Co-op that Christy
- 5:16will send her child to. OK so this is from the
- 5:19homeschool co-ops about us Paige.
- 5:21And I don't want to say the name of the Co-op, just, you know,
- 5:25privacy stuff. We see this homeschool Co-op as
- 5:29a lighthouse for this fallen world, a place of rescue from
- 5:34the darkness and perverseness of the broken public school system.
- 5:39The mission is to provide a safe place for children to learn and
- 5:43grow in their relationship with God, building up a community of
- 5:47homeschoolers who are taking back their identities in Christ
- 5:50Jesus. We pray to be a seed planting
- 5:53cooperation for the Kingdom of Heaven.
- 5:56We are also here to inform and equip other churches and or
- 5:59communities how to plant a school in your own area.
- 6:02The Lord told us we would be a blueprint for more schools to
- 6:05come. We have faith and are walking
- 6:07boldly with the word of our Father in our hearts.
- 6:10OK, so if you guys want to know more about like the crunchy to
- 6:13all right pipeline and how religion plays a role in this,
- 6:17like specifically Christianity, go listen to our Gwen Whiz
- 6:21episode because we dove into the topic in much more depth in that
- 6:25episode. But obviously, as you can tell,
- 6:27this homeschool Co-op is heavily influenced by religion.
- 6:30So it makes sense that, you know, Christie would send her
- 6:33son to this one because it's her sisters.
- 6:35But also the homeschool posted on Facebook that they are moving
- 6:39locations and they posted photos of Christie's property as like
- 6:43the place that they're moving to.
- 6:44Christie had also announced at some point that she was building
- 6:47her sister a house on her property.
- 6:49So now people are convinced that Christie is essentially hosting
- 6:52this homeschool Co-op on her property and like all of that
- 6:55would be OK. That would be fine, however this
- 7:00homeschool Co-op supports anti LGBTQIA views allegedly.
- 7:05So this is directly from the Reddit post.
- 7:08I don't want to paraphrase this. So they wrote.
- 7:10On the 4th of July a video was posted to the homeschool social
- 7:13media pages showing them participating in a parade.
- 7:16It featured them holding signs associated with anti LGBT
- 7:20sentiment. The slogan Don't mess with our
- 7:23kids is actually the name of an anti LGBT hate organization and
- 7:29it is clear that they are associated with this hate group
- 7:31because the sign is promoting their hashtag.
- 7:34Christy's son was in the video face showing.
- 7:37I will not be posting him but I find it interesting she's again
- 7:39showing his face on social media unless it's being used to
- 7:42promote hate. So Christy was not in this
- 7:45video, but she did like the video on Facebook.
- 7:48So now her followers are commenting on her videos and
- 7:53social media and her DMS and they are claiming to be blocked.
- 7:56I wanted to talk about like why it seems like so many
- 7:59influencers fall down this pipeline.
- 8:00Christy is so far from the first influencer to fall down this
- 8:04pipeline and it seems like it just is happening more and more.
- 8:07So I think influencing, especially YouTube is a job that
- 8:11a lot of people go into when they have mental health
- 8:15struggles like anxiety and social anxiety because this is a
- 8:19job where you basically socially isolate.
- 8:21You are talking to a camera, you're interacting with people,
- 8:24but it's all through a computer. So I think the mixture of high
- 8:28anxiety or just not great mental health in general, mixed with
- 8:32spending so much time online, which is obviously also part of
- 8:37that job, I think that's kind of a recipe for disaster.
- 8:41And this disaster is compounded when you consider that many
- 8:44influencers get into this job very young.
- 8:47So they haven't had a lot of real world experience.
- 8:51They might not have formal higher education, and they also
- 8:55have a lot of money. So that can create a superiority
- 8:59complex, a lot of money from a young age where you feel like
- 9:02you're almost like above science.
- 9:04I feel like that all combined makes them the perfect target
- 9:07for this pipeline. I think non influencers, you
- 9:10know, you have managers, superiors, corporate bosses or
- 9:13whatever it is, and that's going to reinforce another level of
- 9:18thinking to you. You're interacting with people
- 9:20from all different walks of life every day.
- 9:23So I think all of that combined makes you very susceptible to
- 9:27the pipeline. When it comes to Christy, it
- 9:29appears like she maybe she has. I don't want to say she
- 9:31absolutely has and it's absolutely confirmed, but like
- 9:34it seems as though it's possible that she has.
- 9:36And I'm sure that having the influence of her sister there as
- 9:39well has of course contributed to that.
- 9:42It is such a wild story. It's very upsetting.
- 9:44Like she I loved her content. I have watched her content for
- 9:48so long. She felt so relatable, rooted in
- 9:52reality, just down to earth. She just, it's just it's such a
- 9:56shame and this just keeps happening.
- 9:58But anyways, let's get on to the next story.
- 10:01So the next story that I have is that Chris Olsen has called out
- 10:04fellow Tik Toker Haley Bailey for mocking abuse victims in her
- 10:10new skit. OK, so this all started, I mean
- 10:14this actually started like last year with like Risa Tisa.
- 10:17So we all know that Brooke Schofield, she did that like 14
- 10:20or 15 part series where she exposed Clinton Kane and his
- 10:23alleged lies. So Brooke made this series in
- 10:26response to Clinton calling her out, right?
- 10:29But she called it her own version of who the fuck did I
- 10:32marry? Which was Risa Tisa series.
- 10:34She did 50 parts, each was like 10 minutes long, and she talked
- 10:39about how she was married to a pathological liar and how she
- 10:42essentially got out of that marriage and survived.
- 10:45So Brooks series obviously was really well received.
- 10:47And then that inspired Chris Olsen, also a tick tocker, to
- 10:51make his own series about his ex-boyfriend and how his
- 10:55ex-boyfriend was super abusive and tried to kill him.
- 10:58And then I guess thinking maybe that this was a trend and not
- 11:03like people's real life stories. Haley Bailey made her own
- 11:09version of this series talking about her fake billionaire
- 11:12boyfriend. And Haley Bailey is the one who
- 11:16had the Met Gala scandal, the let them eat cake scandal just a
- 11:18few months ago. So people are watching her with
- 11:21a very critical eye right now because of that.
- 11:23ANYWAYS, so a lot of people took it seriously.
- 11:25They didn't take necessarily the story seriously.
- 11:27They just took it seriously as in like she was actually trying
- 11:30to pass this off as like a real story.
- 11:32But it was definitely like a bit like it was definitely a skit
- 11:34that she was trying to do because I think it's pretty well
- 11:36known what UN quote her like billionaire boyfriend is fake.
- 11:39I think I think it's like a bit. So she, you know, made her own,
- 11:43like, version of this to like, jump on, you know, the trend and
- 11:46like, I think trying to be funny.
- 11:49And obviously people were like, what the fuck?
- 11:51Like you, you can't be out here making, like, funny skits, quote
- 11:56UN quote, funny skits mocking abuse victims, like playing an
- 11:59abuse victim. So this didn't go over very
- 12:03well. She deleted the video.
- 12:04And then Chris Olsen, on his alt account, made a response.
- 12:10Listen, I'm not above satire. I'm not above making up a little
- 12:13story on the Internet for fun like me saying Meghan Trainer
- 12:16and I were childhood friends. When we're not getting the
- 12:18audience and all of us having a little laugh together, we're
- 12:21satire. And making up stories is not
- 12:23appropriate. It's stories about abuse.
- 12:25This isn't a trend to jump on because you see, it's getting
- 12:28other people views. I wouldn't even say this is a
- 12:30trend to jump on at all. I was inspired by the women
- 12:34before me who were bravely sharing their stories and knew
- 12:36that it helped me feel less alone.
- 12:38So I figured if I share my story, I would feel less alone.
- 12:41But regardless of the views and whatever I'm getting from it,
- 12:45I'm still living with the trauma of that story.
- 12:47I'm still living with the fact that I'm now kind of scared that
- 12:50he's going to reach out to me. I'm still living with the fact
- 12:52that in so many of my relationships, I operate under
- 12:56the guise of always thinking I'm in the wrong, or always thinking
- 12:59this person is going to flip a switch and turn on me out of
- 13:02nowhere because that's what this guy did when I was 15 or 16.
- 13:06I'm still living in fear and views aren't going to take that
- 13:10away. And so I just think if you're
- 13:13getting on this trend and making something up, it is a bit
- 13:16disrespectful to the people who have actually been through
- 13:18something. Chris's response was also
- 13:21reposted by Taffy. So I think the interesting thing
- 13:24here, I mean, obviously Hailey Bailey is very like, not
- 13:27socially aware. I don't think that's surprising.
- 13:29And I think a lot of influencers who are really rich, famous,
- 13:34gorgeous, you know, surrounded by yes men, like, I think most
- 13:37of them are probably not that socially aware.
- 13:39I don't think that's like unique to her.
- 13:41But I think it's interesting to see her peers like Taffy and
- 13:44Chris call her out, especially because no one really spoke up
- 13:48about the Met Gala stuff as far as I know.
- 13:51So it's interesting to see them kind of taking a stand now.
- 13:56OK, And the last story that I have for you guys, I'm sorry.
- 13:58I need to wrap this up because I'm really like struggling to
- 14:01talk because I'm not feeling well.
- 14:04I wanted to share the 1,000,000 beers trend.
- 14:08OK, so Sean keeps telling me to talk about this.
- 14:11He's like it's been on his for you page forever.
- 14:13He keeps sending me these videos like you need to talk about this
- 14:15on mini scrolls. I'm like OK, I'll talk about it.
- 14:17It's funny. So 1,000,000 beers is a new
- 14:20TikTok trend that seems to mock toxic masculinity.
- 14:25It's like mocking alpha male Jim Bros.
- 14:29But that's not actually like how it started.
- 14:31So it was started by a creator named Zach and Yon in June when
- 14:35he posted a video wearing Snapchats handsome lens filter
- 14:39walking around a party with the caption open bar.
- 14:41You say, yeah, I'll have 1,000,000 beers.
- 14:45This obviously didn't start as social commentary on toxic
- 14:48masculinity, like I said, but it's kind of turned into that.
- 14:51So the use of the handsome filter, which is kind of like
- 14:54the equivalent of tick tocks bold glam filter for guys, it
- 14:58makes these men look like the ideal Chad.
- 15:02And if you listened to our looks back sing episode, then you'll
- 15:05know that Chad is an incel term that describes the ideal man
- 15:09like a man who's really hot and jacked and successful and gets
- 15:12all the girls. So the combination of this
- 15:15filter with saying you want 1,000,000 beers, men are using
- 15:19this trend as basically like a way to mock a masculine one up
- 15:23culture. It's like, oh, last night I
- 15:24drank like, Can you believe I drank like 10 beers and then
- 15:27someone's like, oh, really? Like I drink 12 and then it's
- 15:30like I drink 1,000,000, you know, like that kind of vibe.
- 15:33So a lot of the videos are now being hashtagged with Sigma and
- 15:37alpha male. They're not all commentary
- 15:39though. There are a lot of these videos
- 15:41that are just men participating without kind of like the bigger
- 15:44message. But the gist is men are making
- 15:46skits on TikTok wearing this Snapchat handsome filter asking
- 15:50for 1,000,000 beers. And these videos are always set
- 15:52to the sound slide Co by Sarah Bro.
- 15:55So I feel like this is funny because maybe like if you have
- 15:59for example, like a skin care brand, if you're like in
- 16:00marketing at a skin care brand, like I feel like there's
- 16:02opportunity here for brands. So let's say you have a skin
- 16:05care brand, I feel like you could so easily do this.
- 16:10You could have that filter on or the bold glam filter.
- 16:13It would just be so easy to make a quick little video wearing
- 16:16that filter being like I'll have 1,000,000 face creams or
- 16:19whatever. Like there's lots of opportunity
- 16:21here. Anyways guys that's it for mini
- 16:23scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
- 16:26I love you guys. Please rate review and
- 16:28subscribe. It helps me so much.
- 16:30I will talk to you on Monday, but there will be a deep dive as
- 16:33always tomorrow. OK, bye.
