- 0:25Welcome back listeners to Sandman Stories Presents
- 0:28Folklore podcast, where I read you to sleep or until the next
- 0:31story. I'm your host, Dustin.
- 0:33Today in episode 267 we're back in the Book of Yoruba Legends
- 0:37written down by MI Ogumi Fu. We have 6 stories concerning
- 0:42Tortoise and his mischief. Story one sees people trying to
- 0:45kill Tortoise but none are able to.
- 0:48In the next 4 stories we see Tortoise acting a lot like
- 0:51Anansi. And in the final story we see
- 0:53what happens when Tortoise gets greedy.
- 0:56OK, let's begin. Story one The three deaths of
- 1:04Tortoise. Tortoise had many enemies and
- 1:08they plotted together to kill him.
- 1:10One night when Tortoise was asleep in his Hut they set it on
- 1:13fire and as the flames leapt up they said to one another, there
- 1:17is no way for him to get out, surely he will die.
- 1:20But Tortoise tucked himself into his shell and was untouched by
- 1:23the fire. In the morning everyone was
- 1:26astonished to see him walking about like nothing had happened.
- 1:30Soon they came up with another plan and threw Tortoise into a
- 1:33pond. The pool is deep, he cannot
- 1:36swim. Surely he will die, said his
- 1:38enemies. But Tortoise had sealed himself
- 1:42in his shell and was safe. And at noon the sun shone
- 1:46fiercely and dried up the pool. That evening Tortoise walked
- 1:50through the village as if nothing had happened, and his
- 1:53enemies were astonished. The next day they tried to kill
- 1:58him a third time. They dug a deep hole in the
- 2:01ground and buried Tortoise, and this time they were sure that he
- 2:05could not escape. To mark his grave, they put a
- 2:08bamboo stake in the ground. Meanwhile a man who was passing
- 2:12by saw the bamboo stake and thought, X marks the spot.
- 2:15There must be buried treasure here.
- 2:18He began to dig, but all he found was Tortoise.
- 2:21Fast as sleep inside his shell, Tortoise strolled through the
- 2:24village again, looking very happy, and his enemies were
- 2:28filled with astonishment. He must have a charm, and we
- 2:32will never be able to kill him, they said to one another, and
- 2:36from that day on they left him in peace.
- 2:39The end OK and story #2 Tortoise and the
- 2:59cock. One day Tortoise and his wife
- 3:02Nyan Ribo felt very hungry but they could not afford to buy
- 3:05food and while they were discussing what might be done,
- 3:09Tortoise heard a cock crowing and it gave him an idea.
- 3:13He went to the cock and said, I have to warn you, I heard the
- 3:17farmer asking his wife for chicken dinner tomorrow.
- 3:20Hearing this news, the chickens were all trying to guess which
- 3:22one of their number would be the next on a plate.
- 3:25Tortoise replied. The farmer's chicken said the
- 3:28first chicken to cluck or to crow would be put in the pot
- 3:30before lunch was over. Naturally the chickens decided
- 3:34to be absolutely silent. Very early the next morning,
- 3:39Tortoise went creeping among the chickens and stole all the eggs
- 3:42from their nests, taking them to his own house.
- 3:45Well, the cock wanted to sound the alarm, but he was afraid to
- 3:49crow, and the hens were afraid to cluck.
- 3:51And when the farmer's wife came to collect the eggs, she found
- 3:54that they were all gone. At this she flew into a rage and
- 3:59killed every chicken instead of just one.
- 4:01And while the farmer and his wife had a chicken feast,
- 4:04Tortoise and Yan Ribo invited their friends to an egg feast.
- 4:08The End. OK and story #3 Tortoise and
- 4:28crab. Everyone knows that Tortoise and
- 4:31Crab are enemies. They used to be friends, but
- 4:35here is the story of why they never say hello to each other
- 4:37anymore. One morning on the seashore they
- 4:41decided to have a fight to see who was stronger, but as both of
- 4:45them were protected by a hard shell, neither could get the
- 4:47advantage. Finally they came to an
- 4:50agreement that they were equal in strength.
- 4:53Tortoise said. We are so well protected by our
- 4:56armor that no one can harm us, and so we are the strongest
- 5:01creatures in the world. Replied Crab.
- 5:04But just then a boy walked by and put them both into his
- 5:07basket. Tortoise was boiled in a pot and
- 5:10a shell was made into jewelry, while crab was cooked in a Stew
- 5:13for the boy's supper. Since that day, the descendants
- 5:18of the two boasters have always been ashamed to meet, and that
- 5:21is why they always shun one another.
- 5:24The End. OK and story #4 Tortoise and the
- 5:44Pigeon. Tortoise and Pigeon were often
- 5:48seen walking together. They were friends but Tortoise
- 5:51treated his friend rather badly and often play tricks on him.
- 5:55Pigeon never complained and put up with everything in a good
- 5:57humored way. Once Tortoise came to him and
- 6:01said, I'm going on a trip to visit my cousins, will you come
- 6:04with me? Pigeon agreed to accompany him
- 6:07and they set off. When they had gone some
- 6:10distance, they came to a river. Pigeon was obliged to take
- 6:13Tortoise on his back and fly him across the river.
- 6:16Soon afterwards they reached the House of Tortoise's cousins.
- 6:20Tortoise left his friend standing at the door while he
- 6:22went inside and greeted his relatives.
- 6:25They prepared a feast for him and they all began to eat
- 6:27together. Won't you ask your friend to eat
- 6:30with us? Asked the cousins, Tortoise was
- 6:34so greedy that he did not wish Pigeon to share the feed and he
- 6:37replied, My friend is a silly fellow, he will not eat in a
- 6:41stranger's house and he is so shy that he refuses to come in.
- 6:48After some time, Tortoise said farewell to his cousins.
- 6:50Greetings to you on your hospitality and waddled out of
- 6:53the house. Pigeon, who was both tired and
- 6:56hungry, heard his words and decided to trick him for once.
- 7:02When they reached the riverbank, he lifted Tortoise up once
- 7:05again. When he had flown halfway, he
- 7:08allowed Tortoise to fall into the river, but by chance,
- 7:11instead of falling into the water, he landed on the back of
- 7:14a crocodile which was floating on the surface.
- 7:17When the crocodile swam to the bank, Tortoise quickly descended
- 7:20and hurried away. Pigeon saw what had happened,
- 7:24and that Tortoise had safely reached the land, so he flew
- 7:27ahead until he came to a field with a dead horse to trick
- 7:32Tortoise once more. Pigeon buried the horse up to
- 7:34its head in the ground, as if it grew there like a plant.
- 7:37When Tortoise reached the field and saw the horse's head, he
- 7:40went straight away to the king of the country and told him that
- 7:42he knew of a place where the horse's heads grew like plants.
- 7:46If this is true, said the king, I will reward you with a great
- 7:49treasure, but if it is false, you must die.
- 7:54The king and a large crowd of people accompanied Tortoise to
- 7:56the field, but Pigeon had buried the whole animal.
- 8:00Tortoise ran about looking for it, and but in vain, and thus he
- 8:04was condemned to die. A large fire was made, and
- 8:08Tortoise was thrown into it, but Pigeon regretted his trick and
- 8:13quickly called together all the birds.
- 8:16They came like a wind, blowing out the fire with their wings,
- 8:19and Tortoise was saved. When Pigeon explained this
- 8:23trick, the king pardoned Tortoise and allowed the two
- 8:25friends to depart safely. The END.
- 8:45OK, story #5 Tortoise and the whip tree.
- 8:49There was a famine in the land and everyone longed for food.
- 8:53Each day Tortoise went into the forest to see what he could find
- 8:56to eat, but every evening he came home discouraged, with only
- 8:59a few herbs and dried up kernels for his family.
- 9:04His wife, Nyan Ribo, wished that he could bring back more than
- 9:06just a few musty morsels. One day as he walked through a
- 9:10Grove, he saw 2 trees close together, a small stunted tree
- 9:14and a big tree with thick foliage and spreading branches.
- 9:19What kind of a tree are you? He asked.
- 9:20The little tree. I am the chop tree, was the
- 9:23reply. Well, chop tree, what can you
- 9:27do? Tortoise asked.
- 9:29The little tree said nothing, but waved its branches and a
- 9:32shower of food fell to the ground.
- 9:36Tortoise ate until there was nothing left, and then turned to
- 9:38the tall, handsome tree. And what kind of a tree are you?
- 9:42He asked, thinking that such a splendid tree must produce rich
- 9:45fruit. The tree told him that its name
- 9:48was the Whip Tree, to which Tortoise replied.
- 9:51Whip Tree, what can you do? At these words, the Whip Tree
- 9:55bent its branches back and beat Tortoise until he cried for
- 9:58mercy. When the beating ceased,
- 10:01Tortoise went home, but being so greedy, he did not tell his
- 10:05family about the two trees and only brought back a handful of
- 10:08flavourless nuts. After that, every day he went to
- 10:12the chop tree and feasted to its heart's content while his family
- 10:16and everyone else, including the king, became thin and meagre.
- 10:21Tortoise got fatter and more prosperous daily until Nyan Ribo
- 10:24began to suspect that something was wrong.
- 10:27One day Yan Ribbo resolved to follow him into the forest, and
- 10:30she was greatly surprised when she saw her husband stand under
- 10:33the little tree and say, tree, do your duty.
- 10:37The branches waved and the rich feast fell to the ground.
- 10:40Yan Ribbo cried out in astonishment and reproached to
- 10:42her husband for his greediness. She hastened back to town and
- 10:46returned with the whole family of children and cousins.
- 10:50She stood under the chap tree and said, Tree, do your duty.
- 10:54When the food fell down, they all partook in the feast, but
- 10:58Tortoise was displeased and he exclaimed, Why don't you stand
- 11:01under the tall Hansman tree and get your reward?
- 11:05Hearing this, they all went to stand under the whip tree, and
- 11:09Yan Rebo again cried, Tree, do your duty.
- 11:13Alas, the branches began to beat them all soundly until they
- 11:16died. Tortoise was alarmed by this and
- 11:19hastily returned to his house. But soon the neighbors noticed
- 11:23that his wife and family were missing, and the king ordered
- 11:26Tortoise to account for their disappearance.
- 11:29Tortoise led the king and all the nobles and the citizens into
- 11:32the forest, and when they gathered under the chop tree, he
- 11:34cried out. Tree, do your duty.
- 11:37And as before, a feast appeared, which the Hunger people soon
- 11:41devoured. Tortoise then asked them to
- 11:44stand underneath the other tree, and this they were eager to do.
- 11:48The king himself was the one to cry out.
- 11:50Tree, do your duty. And the branches began to beat
- 11:53all those who stood below, until they cried out with pain in a
- 11:57great rage. The people haunted for Tortoise,
- 11:59wanting to kill him, but he hid inside his shell in a secret
- 12:02place and they could not harm him.
- 12:05He stayed hidden until the king died and a new king was found
- 12:08and he thought it was safe to show his face in the town again.
- 12:12But whenever he hears chop and whip, he hides in his shell,
- 12:16thinking he is in danger. The End.
- 12:35OK, the 6th and final story of this book, Tortoise and the
- 12:40Rain. Tortoise and a Cloud once made
- 12:43the following agreement. Whenever Tortoise wanted fine
- 12:46weather, he was to stand outside his house and call pass pass,
- 12:50and then the cloud would roll away and allow the sun to shine.
- 12:54And when Tortoise desired rain, he was to cry.
- 12:57Fall, fall and the rain would pour down.
- 13:01In payment for this service, Tortoise was to place a certain
- 13:04number of calories on the ground each time.
- 13:07Tortoise was delighted with this arrangement, and at first he
- 13:10duly placed the sum of money on the ground every time he asked
- 13:12Cloud for fine or wet weather. One day on the occasion of the
- 13:17chief's wedding, the sky was very cloudy and it seemed like
- 13:20it was going to rain. Tortoise heard the chief
- 13:23complaining. We have hired the drummers for a
- 13:25great deal of money, but if it rains, nobody will come to see
- 13:29the maidens dance at my wedding. Tortoise went to the chief and
- 13:33said, If you give me a few shells, I'll hold the clouds
- 13:37back with my hard shell, and the wedding will be sunny.
- 13:40The chief readily agreed to pay the cowries.
- 13:42Tortoise demanded, and Tortoise stood at the back of his Hut and
- 13:45cried to the cloud. Pass, pass.
- 13:48The cloud gently rolled back and the sun shone brightly, and the
- 13:52wedding took place with much rejoicing.
- 13:55But Tortoise did not lay any money on the ground, and instead
- 13:59he kept the whole amount for himself.
- 14:02The next day a man came to Tortoise house and offered him
- 14:05riches if he could cause the rain to fall.
- 14:07He said, my fish traps are too high on the bank, but if it
- 14:11rains the river will rise and the fish will swim into my
- 14:14baskets. Very well, replied Tortoise, I
- 14:19will throw a spear into the clouds, and the rain will fall.
- 14:22Then he stood back at the back of his house where he could not
- 14:25be seen, and cried to the cloud. Fall, fall, and it began to pour
- 14:29with rain. But again he neglected to lay
- 14:33money on the ground and kept it all for himself.
- 14:36Soon he grew rich and famous, and almost every day someone
- 14:39asked him for fine or rainy weather.
- 14:41He stored many bags of cowries in his house and gave nothing to
- 14:44the cloud. When two people asked him for
- 14:48rain and sunshine on the same day, Tortoise pretended that he
- 14:51had grown tired from holding the clouds on his back and so the
- 14:53rain fell. But after some time, seeing how
- 14:57rich Tortoise became, the hard working cloud was angry and
- 15:00decided to punish him. One day Tortoise wanted to go on
- 15:05vacation with his family, so he stood outside his house and
- 15:07cried. Pass pass let the sunshine on my
- 15:10journey. But as soon as he had set out,
- 15:14the cloud turned black again and rain poured down in Torrance
- 15:17causing a great flood in the town and the whole family was
- 15:20swept out to sea. The end.
- 15:40I absolutely love Tortoise and all of his trickery.
- 15:42I was kind of surprised with all the death and callousness of
- 15:45Tortoise in these stories. It was just wild to see.
- 15:48I wonder if that had to do with dealing with death as a very
- 15:50common thing in the community. We are living a lot longer these
- 15:54days and death is much more pushed to the side.
- 15:56I really enjoyed the cloud story and the tree story, but the
- 15:59other four were also fantastic. And this concludes the book of
- 16:03Yoruba legends written down by MI Ogumifu, born Margaret Irene
- 16:07Bauman in Manchester, England. Didn't see that one coming, did
- 16:10you? She married Michael Ogumifu and
- 16:12wrote two books of Nigerian folklore after his death.
- 16:15One is Margaret Bauman and one as MI Ogumifu.
- 16:19She also published a lot of nurse romance stories as
- 16:21Margaret Lee's. I'll be able to get into her
- 16:24other book starting on January 1st as the 1929 book is not
- 16:28quite yet in the public domain, but it will be after I post this
- 16:31episode, so fingers crossed. And since I've talked so much,
- 16:36I'll give no explanation. Shout out to some of my favorite
- 16:38podcasts, the For Your Reference podcast, the Ratchet Book Club
- 16:42podcast, Away with words, our show Bunny trails, all great
- 16:46shows. Just go and listen to them if
- 16:48you get the chance. And happy 2025 y'all.
- 16:52Thank you and good night.
