[rock music] Get up and watch us ride Hey everybody, welcome to Full Spectrum Cycling. This is technically show 333. Yes. Slash- And a third... dot, dot two.
• 0:18
And a third, like a spinning on the, on the turntable on. R- right on. Yeah, so I don't know, maybe I'll do a mishmash of both, uh, last week and this week.
• 0:29
We had some technical difficulties last week, but be that as it may, we're here again to make sure that we get our good buddy Ulroy on and, uh, I guess, you know what? It's already ti- we...
• 0:40
Why don't we just get him on right away, and then if we have anything worthwhile to say at the end, we will, uh, go ahead and do it at the end of the show. So without further ado, [phone ringing]
• 0:53
see, still dead on our end. Hello? Hello. Is that Ulroy over there? I- it is. Now, if this isn't the Full Spectrum- [laughs]... Cycling, uh, podcast and it's some telemarketer, I'm gonna be very, very disappointed.
• 1:07
[laughs] Well, I do have a fat bike for you. Uh, uh- Oh, is that... [laughs] Yeah. Yeah, you- Well, I'll tell you something, I, I have, I've got a few fat bikes. I think I'm all, all, all good there. [laughs] All right.
• 1:18
Well, welcome to the show, Ulroy, after our aborted, uh, mission last week. Uh, I appreciate you coming back this week and, uh, making your time available to give us a little input on what's going on up in Canada.
• 1:31
Yeah, I appreciate that, guys. I was, uh, I was starting to get worried that there was some sort of tariff on, uh, phone calls from the United States to Canada that- That's exactly what I was saying...
• 1:40
suddenly I missed or... That- Yeah. Well-... exactly what I was saying. Okay. So to- [laughs]... to be fair, I would call it an Apple tax possibly- Yes...
• 1:47
because I hadn't used the new phone on the system yet, and apparently with their new fancy made in-house chip, there's some issue with how they handle Bluetooth, and we could hear you fine, but you couldn't hear us.
• 2:00
And I, I- Right. You know what-... you know, I went, I went through a whole, I don't know, hours of thing with Rode, who makes the gizmo that we use- Oh... and, uh, they said, "Yeah, those guys, they did something."
• 2:11
So it kinda broke our system, but they're working on a fix. [laughs] But I also have an older phone, which is what we're currently using, so old tech is worth keeping sometimes. Yeah, good try, Tim Apple. Right?
• 2:21
[laughs] Uh-uh, you can't get it. You can't do it. Uh. There... Yeah, because there was a time when, I don't know if we switched... We have two, uh, like, carriers, you know, primarily, Rogers and Bell here.
• 2:35
So, uh, I don't know if we'd switched carriers at one point. My wife kinda, for her business, she does, she deals with all the telephone stuff. But, um, uh, when I couldn't call into the show, it would, it would tell...
• 2:46
It would phone there, and it would just tell me that the, the line's been disconnected. No. And it was really odd.
• 2:50
We had to actually phone, and they went through a, a, quite an ordeal to try to make it so that they could, we could phone you guys. Huh. Yeah, so. [laughs] Wow. Well, tech- [laughs]... technology- I don't know...
• 3:00
you know, when they used to have the wires running across the country that, uh, connected you one person to another, that, that was pretty reliable back then. [laughs] De, de, de, de, de, de, de. And carrier pigeons.
• 3:08
Yeah. Yeah, yeah, somebody on the switchboard there, uh- Smoke signals... literally, uh, what do you call it? A Tomlin there, which- [laughs]... switching the switchboard. [laughs] Mm-hmm. Yeah, yeah. For sure.
• 3:18
Yeah, for real. Oh, yeah. Yeah. One ringy dinghy, or what did you say? [laughs] Well, Li- Lily- That's right. That's right... Tomlin, uh. Ingitch spigitch.
• 3:25
[snorts] Yeah, nose, squinty nose, squinty face, da, da, da, yeah. [laughs] Well, I don't know if it's, if it's 100% true, but you may be our most, uh, prolific caller-inner.
• 3:37
Uh, I went back through our, our notes, and you've been on... This is your, like, 11th time on the show, at least. I think y- probably, yeah, I would th- I would say so if I wa- Yeah.
• 3:47
Um, the only other person I can think that's called in a lot, which I, uh, I haven't heard in a while, and I hope he's doing okay, is Big Sexy. I don't know what- [laughs] Yeah... oh, that's true. He did call in. Yeah.
• 3:57
Yeah. Yeah, and Spinner and, Spinner and Chewy are up there, too. Um, I know Spinner called- Yeah, I would say Big Sexy probably would, would- Yeah, that could be. He did, he did call in a lot...
• 4:04
hold, hold the title that we didn't know existed. Like- [laughs]... so, so I don't know if you can't see from where you are, Ulroy, but, uh, it, it's JK and, uh, and Sven tonight.
• 4:15
Tony is, uh, going to some fancy rock and roll show, so he's not in the studio. The Aquabats. The Aquabats. Oh. With- Yeah... Coffin Cats are opening, which is a good psychobilly outfit. That's a good, that's a good...
• 4:28
It... Definitely it's worth going to. Yeah. I, I think we probably coulda got him up here if we forced him into it, but- It's hard to, like, just- [laughs]...
• 4:36
you know, put the fingers in the nostril and drag up the stairs- Yeah, for sure... and, you know, there's just... We, we- Is it a, is it a fairly small show, like a, like a s- several hundred people, or is it- Nah...
• 4:44
like a big stadium? Like, what would you say? No, it's like mid- I know the Aquabats aren't that-... it's, it's midsize. I think it'd be, like, maybe 2,000. Under- Under 2,000... yeah. 1,500 maybe. Right.
• 4:54
Something like that. I mean, Milwaukee- Yeah, that's nice... Milwaukee does pretty well with some of these, uh, bands, like, y- you know, they're, they're kinda mid-tier. I don't know what... Sure.
• 5:06
That's not, that's not the way to talk about them. They're really- No... they're, they're pro, but- I mean, for venues... venue- Yeah. Yeah... venue-wise, for sure. Yeah. It's like- Yeah...
• 5:12
you're not gonna, you know, like, Clutch isn't gonna sell out a, uh, an arena. No. Right. But they'll sell out The Rave. [laughs] But they'll sell, or, or get...
• 5:22
Well, actually, nobody sells The Rave because that would be turning money away. [laughs] So that's why it's never been a sold-out show. Right. Just the threat of one. Yeah. [laughs] That sounds like a good idea. Sorry.
• 5:33
[laughs] Wow. Somebody got me on a, on a, mm, kick y- earlier, so... [laughs] Did you, did you guys happen to have, come f- through your way Buddy Fest? Have, did you hear, have you heard of this one? No. Buddy Fest?
• 5:47
Uh-uh. It was so, it was, um, Greg Norton of Husker Du- Mm... organized it, and there was a bunch of bands that came literally within, and I say it's an hour from my house, but only two turns to get there. Uh-huh.
• 6:00
And it was one of... And two nights they had all playing, and it was the two original singers, not Dave Smalley, but the other two original singers. And I'm telling you, it was this, uh, to watch a, a crowd of,
• 6:14
like, fans that are in their 50s standing in front of the, just, like, watching these guys play, and it was as good as they were 25 years ago when I saw them.
• 6:22
And it had a little restaurant there, and it was all, it was nice shade trees. It was, there was grass. There was a beer gardens. It was really laid back, super laid back.
• 6:30
And they're coming again this year again, coming back. And so I guess they must have, they must have done well enough to, to, you know, so they could come back again and do it again, and different bands again.
• 6:41
It, and it's so- Sweet... it was so fantastic to watch them. Just standing three feet, like, from these guys that, you know, we watched on stage, and they would come down and play.
• 6:50
I think I was bothering the heck out of them. [laughs] But I mean, I did get a chance to talk to the entire lineup of all, and that was really super cool. So, um, yeah.
• 6:57
So I'm hoping to go and, and see them again this, uh, in August. So yeah, that's what I'm looking forward to for sure, is as far as, uh, bands go. And it's, it's, and again, it's not L- London is an easy one to get to.
• 7:10
It's fairly large. Toronto is the one that hosts most of the re- I mean, massive, massive shows. Mm-hmm. And I think everybody goes, everybody goes to Toronto. But Toronto, to get to, to get there is a headache.
• 7:21
Right now there's a h- every weekend they have 100 different things going on and it's, uh, it's chaos to get there. But, um- Mm-hmm... you know, but this other venue that we went to just ease, ease, simple, and fun.
• 7:32
Nice. All night. Do you guys have- Yeah... like, do you guys have the two seasons up there like we do here, like winter and construction? There...
• 7:40
So up to, up until today, t- I would say basically three weeks ago, we were wearing our winter coats. [laughs] Oh, wow. It was freezing.
• 7:48
And then there was a, there was a point to where it just 0, 32, and then it just jumped and we were sweating in shorts. It was, it was instantaneous. It was so crazy. So I don't know if that's...
• 7:58
I imagine your guys' weather's sorta similar, but it, it happened so fast. It was, it made your head snap around. I, it's been, it's been pretty- I think-... pretty good here. Yeah.
• 8:07
I, we're close on that, where it takes like, the change over's in about a week, week and a half. Yeah. It's like, whoa, whoa. Right... whoa, whoa, whoa. Okay.
• 8:17
Now I don't- [laughs] Like, I don't know how to dress myself like a normal human being right now. Yeah. [laughs] Yeah.
• 8:22
So how did the, uh, how did the spring then, being chilly, the spring fat bike season work out for you? It was a lo- it was a long winter. It definitely, uh, started early in November and it didn't end.
• 8:34
I mean, my bike, it w- the one bike that I ride primarily in the winter, my poor old Bigfoot, it suffered, it suffered greatly. I actually blew out one of the calipers.
• 8:43
I'm not sure if Shimano, if it's the oil or the, the di- the design of the caliper, but I've, I've ruined, uh, multiple, uh, hydraulic calipers just riding in the winter with, uh, with the Norco.
• 8:54
So I had to actually install a, a cable actuated one that I had kicking around here just to get me through the rest of the winter. And then, um, it was, it was fairly, it was, it was a good winter for riding.
• 9:06
There was a lot of, there was enough snow to keep us, to keep us happy. And, um, but, uh, yeah, like I said, it switched over so quickly that we just, it got back to dry, dry, uh, dry gravel pretty, pretty quick.
• 9:19
So I- So I had to pull out the other, the other Rocky Mountain that I have and ride it now in just, uh, in the, in the dry weather. Right on.
• 9:26
I'm not sure what it is with, uh, I don't know if it's the cold or what, but, uh, both Shimano brakes and I've got Maguras, or had Magura on my, my primary fat bike.
• 9:36
And for some reason, the front brake just decided that it didn't need fluid anymore and, uh, it all- [laughs] Yeah... I don't know, it just all d- no, you know, no damage, no crash, no nothing. Right.
• 9:48
It just decided it wasn't gonna have any more fluid in it, so guess what I replaced it with? Cable actuated TRP. Right. You know, just the TRP, uh, Spike or whatever it is, Spire, what- whatever the long pull one is.
• 10:02
And, uh, as, as fast as I go on a fat bike, I really don't feel the need for hydraulic [laughs] brakes. I feel the need- Right... for reliability, so. Yes. Do they make...
• 10:12
Like, I know that the, some of the Tektro stuff is mostly what we get on the, the bikes that come. There's a Tektro, it's, it's a single piston. It, I mean, it works great. They, they, they stop the bike, no problem.
• 10:22
But, um, is there, other than Paul's Components, is there other cable actuated, nice cable actuated, uh, calipers out there? Yeah. Uh, I mean, so TRP is basically the higher end version of a Tektro. Okay.
• 10:35
And they, and they make a brake that actually is mechanical, but both sides of the, uh, pads move. Instead of like a BB7, where only one side- Uh... moves and you bend your rotor to- Yep... stop. Yep. Yep.
• 10:48
This one actually comes in from both sides. So you can adjust. Okay. You can adjust it real well. It's called, um, the, the one's a short pull and one's a long pull, but they're the same basic brake.
• 10:57
Um, Spike I think is the one that we use on the fat bikes. Okay. And Spire would be the one you use on a road bike for a shorter pull lever. Right. But yeah, they're, they're super nice.
• 11:06
And they're not a, I don't know if they're much more than a, like a higher end BB7 with stainless hardware, so. And they're pretty much- Right... on, on all my stuff now. I just, I, again, I am not all mountain riding.
• 11:18
I'm not going 60 miles an hour down a hill, so I don't really need a hydraulic brake anymore. So yeah, I, I highly recommend- All right... the TRPs.
• 11:28
I like the look of the sh- I like the look of that, just the look itself. It's like a mini motorbike. It has a, you know, hydraulic actuated brakes.
• 11:35
It looks really cool, but again, it, it, there's been so much fuss with them, bleeding them and whatnot. And then, like I said, the, the Shimanos have just, yeah, [laughs] basically let go.
• 11:45
And then of course you're into this, not only that, the, the pads are, you know, completely destroyed 'cause the oil goes all over them, and then it goes all over the rotor and everywhere else. Yep.
• 11:54
So, um, yeah, I mean, it, uh, it's almost to the point where I'm like, do I really need those hydraulics or do, should I just invest in a set of nice-... cable actuator to be- Yeah... to be satisfied.
• 12:04
'Cause I do have friends that I ride with that their, their, their dedicated cable actuator brakes and they, they... I mean, we're all riding together and nobody... I've never heard them complain once. So- Sure.
• 12:12
[laughs] Yeah... maybe, you know. I mean, at, at least, at least Shimano, uh, Magura, I think, uh, TRP's hydraulics are mineral oil versus some of the other ones that actually use- Right...
• 12:24
dot fluid, which now that starts to- Yeah... mess with your paint, and it's a pain in the butt, and I- [laughs] You know, we're not driving cars here, so let's use- Right... I, we're, you know. I don't know. Anyway.
• 12:35
[laughs] Yeah. Um, so yeah. So, well, at, at least you got something on there to stop you now. Yeah. It, it worked. It was fine. There was, there was no, I, no noticeable difference, to be honest. I didn't... Yeah.
• 12:47
Speaking of brakes. Brakes. Uh-oh. [bell ringing] Okay. [laughs] JK's got us to the top of the hill. Sure he did. Good thing we got those brakes, brakes fixed before we got there. [laughs] Yeah. And my arms- Uh...
• 12:59
I gotta, I gotta stay in the T-Rex arm world. Yeah. Today's, uh, today's beer is courtesy of JK, so why doesn't, why don't you tell us about what you got there, uh, uh, Mr. JK?
• 13:08
It's a Jockamo Juicy IPA from Abita Brewing in New Orleans, Louisiana. And it got a ORAC, uh- ORAC approval... ORAC approval. He's like, "I was drinking that during Jazz Fest. It was awesome." So.
• 13:23
It's, it is t- It's a- I've, I've already been imbibing and tasting a little bit... it's a tasty damn beverage. Looks pretty good. 6% on the Alcahoosie, 30% on the international bitter girlfriend unit.
• 13:34
Nice, nice artwork on the box. Yeah. And it, I, yeah, if in New Orleans and it's on the menu, highly recommend it. Behind all the 3D-printed figures you see before you. Yeah. That didn't, uh- I got my 3D print-...
• 13:46
fall- I got my 3D printer... fall, fall into my wrath- [laughs]... of spillage before. No. And they're made out of plastic, so they would've been unaffected by your- Well, one's a boat-... big arms...
• 13:54
so it would've been safe. Oh, yeah. That's the first thing you print. Any guy that ever gets a 3D printer, pretty much you print a Benchy. That's that thing right there. Mm-hmm. It's the boat. The boat.
• 14:03
Uh, now I just have to figure out useful stuff for the 3D printer. Uh-huh. Things for bikes, things for, I don't know, things for cameras, things for audio equipment. Yeah.
• 14:12
Oh, and, uh, speaking of, uh, I ran into or saw, uh, Colby riding on, on the Fatty over by campus, and he, you know, he had the, uh... [clicks tongue] He's still working on mine. The, uh, what do you call it?
• 14:28
The- The, the Wonder Cap. Yeah. The, the valve. The wieners. So, uh, oh, Roy, are you, uh, are you into the 3D printing yet? [laughs] You know what? My, my son's more into that, but he has one, and it's a fairly...
• 14:41
It's a, it's a, it's a decent unit. It's not very large, but the amount of things that he has printed... I asked him one time, I said, "Can you..." He had this glow-in-the-dark stuff, so I said, "Print me up a Godzilla."
• 14:52
So he prints me off this [laughs] miniature Godzilla. You put it in the window to get, to light it up, and then you stick it on the wi- you know, anywhere, and there's Godzilla light, lit up like he's nuclear radiated.
• 14:59
[laughs] Oh. The coolest thing. Very nice. He's printed all kinds of stuff, and he's busy building himself something else.
• 15:05
But yeah, it's, it's unlimited the amount of things you can do with it, and just, just create whatever you want. You can imagine anything, and you can pretty much print it. Yeah. For sure.
• 15:14
Uh, our buddy- Not, not even a Gojira? Which, I mean. No, it wasn't a Gojira. No, no, no. No, not a Gojira? It was Godzilla. It was Godzilla? No. Godzilla. Okay. I'm just- [laughs] Okay. Just making sure.
• 15:25
Uh, do you have something at your top of the hill? Or are you- Yeah... not telling? No. I've actually got... I was looking. I went to specifically today to our, to our local, uh...
• 15:34
Now we can get beer, we can get beer now in our corner stores, which is fantastic. They do charge a little more, but it's convenient and it's cold. Right on.
• 15:40
But I did happen to go to the government, the government, uh, agency, and, uh, I found one that w- it's called, uh, it's from Rouge River. Uh-huh. And it's called Hoppie.
• 15:50
So it looks like Popeye's hand, but he's got a, and I'm not sure there's, I don't think there's spinach in it, but it's, uh, he's got a little hop on his arm there, and he's- [laughs]... pushing a can of hops. Nice.
• 15:58
Nice. 6.8, uh, hazy IPA. So that's what I'm having tonight. Sweet. Very good. Yeah. That sounds delicious. So- I like that...
• 16:05
question about your, uh, your liquor situation up there, since our beloved president down here, uh, d- did all his stuff. Oh, yeah. You got, you, they to- What happened to all, what happened to all your bourbon?
• 16:15
They took away all. They took away your bourbon all away. They took away your Jack Daniels. [laughs] Did, did they take... Did they... But they didn't t- so, uh, is there Canadian booze down there?
• 16:23
Because we can't- Most likely... so the funny thing was the, the Canadian, the Canadian government, to put a positive spin on it, said, "The people are now buying [laughs] C- Canadian booze." And I went, "Well, hold on."
• 16:36
[laughs] Yeah. If you, you have to offer somebody a choice, and then if they don't buy it, then that means... You know what I mean?
• 16:42
If you have to say to someone, "Buy Canadian," but then you take away all the other choices. But there's people that would enjoy a, a Jack Daniels at this point. I think, you know what? Uh, sometimes absence- Not really.
• 16:50
Mm... makes the heart grow fonder. And when it comes back, I'm sure it'll be sold off the shelves, but [laughs] Well, I don't know about that. It's hard to own right now. No. I mean, no, it, it- Yeah.
• 16:59
I gotta be honest... it's, it's not, I don't think it's really an absent- Mm. I... If it's on the menu, I don't necessarily go to it either. No. It, we're not- I mean, I like my rail, you know? Hey.
• 17:07
It, it- It, it all does the same job... I think the thing is, one, it, the, I blame NASCAR on this, I think, and television advertising in general.
• 17:15
When they made all the whiskey and other, any c- any other, you know, liquor company, they had to be 80 proof or less, so 40% alcohol or below. Right. Or you couldn't advertise. You couldn't, you know, put your- Okay...
• 17:30
name on the side of a NASCAR. Well, all the good stuff in the old days was way over 80 proof. And I- Yep... I know I've told this story before. I don't know if you've heard it, but [laughs]
• 17:40
when I went to Las Vegas to work and they had 1973 bottles of Old Crow, it was the- Cool...
• 17:46
best that I've had in years and years and years and years, 'cause they found it when they were remodeling, and they're like, "We got a few cases, and here you go."
• 17:54
And, uh, that same, uh, Old Crow whiskey, or bourbon actually, is now pretty much the crappiest thing you can buy. Oh, yeah. Right. Or close to it. I don't know.
• 18:04
It just, I, all those things that used to be good are not as good anymore. Yeah. They, they carry the name, not the quality. Yeah. And, and when Sazerac- Of the last, yeah...
• 18:11
got ahold of all this stuff, it's, you know, it, that one company- Yeah... owns all the big names now, so whatever. Yep It's the same with beer. Now I w- I...
• 18:19
Funny you say that, because I went on a, we, a friend of mine had a, a birthday at, at a, a, a distillery. And I went and I asked the guy who was doing the tour, I said to him, "Is there some sort of...
• 18:28
In Canada, is there some sort of limit on the, the alcohol content? Could you, could..."
• 18:35
The reason they cap it at, at like 80 proof, so like 40%, is because it's, it's easy to calculate how much you're serving in a restaurant.
• 18:42
So they basically base it on what you're gonna be, a, a measured drink is equal to at a restaurant. So that's the only reason that they brew it to a certain, there is strength. Huh. Huh.
• 18:53
They can brew it stronger, but it doesn't... You know what I mean? Yeah. That's what he told me, so I'm not sure if that translates the same down there or not. I'm not sure.
• 18:59
It, yeah, but it, it, I guess I could see, you know, how that could work. Plus, if you make it lower alcohol, people are gonna get less drunk anyway. [laughs] Right. Right. You have to ask Guy. Hey, Guy. Yeah.
• 19:12
Oh, yeah, Guy Rehorst. Hey, Guy. He's the, he owns a place down here called Great Lakes Distillery, which- Was the first, uh- Yeah... Wisconsin, uh, distillery, because it was- In about, what, uh, 80 years or something?
• 19:24
Yeah, since the, uh, Prohibition- Prohibition. So yeah, Wisconsin, you used to not be able to do it at all- Right... to make booze. Now, he got it passed so y- that craft booze makers, not beer, but you know, liquor,
• 19:38
he- Yeah... he got, he made it. And it was only 25 years ago. Mm-hmm. It wasn't that long ago. So- Yeah... uh, good, good job, Guy. He got it so people can just brew hooch in their backyard again. [laughs] Yeah.
• 19:49
[laughs] It's not gonna be all prison hooch. Right? So. Uh, so, uh, all right, I gotta... So you and I have been doing a little bit of, um, Fat Bike Lab, uh, you know, doing stuff on the lab. Do, m- m...
• 20:04
What do you think of the community that we're, we're building with the, uh, that whole school community Fat Bike Lab thing? I, I really like it.
• 20:15
And, and the reason I say that is because there's, there's a lot of people...
• 20:19
Like for instance, when I, when I would read fatbike.com and I would throw a comment out there and I would wonder, is there anybody, like is there anybody else out there,
• 20:26
um, and I don't know if it was being, you know, if the comments weren't worthwhile printing or whatever, but d- I would say, "Well, am I the only one that's commenting on these things?" No. Ab- no, no.
• 20:34
But, but really- No, absolutely not. People were not commenting on fatbike.com at all. You know, it's just- Which, but- It, it's a, it's a, I dunno. I hate to say it, and I still love fatbike.com. Lurker. Yeah.
• 20:44
But I do think that- Most...
• 20:46
uh, because of AI and a bunch of other reasons, that, that websites like fatbike.com are, are going by the way of the dinosaur, and the new thing really is this community thing that we're working on.
• 20:58
Well, it's fantastic because when you look at the p- the, I mean, they're, people that are on there are doing a phenomenal job.
• 21:04
Their bikes, if you take, when they take a picture of their bikes and you, you know, you blow up to look at it, these guys are putting a lot of effort into their fat bikes. These aren't just off the shelf.
• 21:13
I mean, there's some incredible looking bikes in there, and the people have some great things to say. There's one guy on there, I c- sorry, I can't remember what his name is.
• 21:20
But he described how to tear down, uh, and described the difference between the Manitou forks, which I'm totally a- oblivious to. Uh-huh. I had no idea, and I'm looking for a fork. And that was incredibly helpful.
• 21:31
Like there's, there's a bunch of other stuff, and the questions that are being asked I think are, are great. I mean, it, and, and the engagement is, um, I mean, you might have
• 21:40
40 or 50 comments on the one, just one question, or there might be, you know, it's, it's, it's great. It's just as, just from the get go, and it's only gonna build from there. I, I, I like it. I enjoy it.
• 21:50
Sometimes you get lazy and don't get on there as much, but, um, but I mean, it just gives you a ton of, it's just a great base and I love the videos. I love everything that the guy, people are doing.
• 22:01
They're putting a lot of effort into it, and it's qual- high quality stuff. It's great. Yeah.
• 22:04
There's definitely, uh, so I think, uh, uh, the dude from Smoke Stone, one of the things I've noticed is that the, uh, the, the British chaps are doing a fantastic job. Yes. Uh, right now we're- Yes, they are...
• 22:15
we're at 100- Good lads... we're at 110 members, and- Awesome...
• 22:19
it, it is, you know, it's over here across the pond, it is, uh, not technically fat bike season, and a lot of people don't ride fat bikes year-round that will, that will sort of show up again in October or November.
• 22:31
In, I think- Right... in England there's a lot more- Terrain... people ride. There's more terrain. That's a good thing. More people that, and more terrain that are fat bike friendly maybe. I dunno. Mm-hmm.
• 22:43
It just like, those people that are on, that are in the forum are very actively all season riders. Oh, for sure.
• 22:53
Yeah, that's the impression that I got, and there's, and it's, there's, you know, there's not all just guys on there. There's, there's girls on there too- That's true... from time to time. Yeah, yeah. That's super cool.
• 23:01
By guys I mean gi- And, uh- By guys I mean girls too. [laughs] No, I know. I didn't- The royal we. Yeah. [laughs]... I didn't say guys as the grand, yeah, the, the overall- The royal, the royal guy we. [laughs] 100%.
• 23:11
Guy. Uh, yeah, so I, I would encourage anybody that's listening that's not already in there, if you're a fat biker, uh, to check it out.
• 23:20
I think, uh, o- once we, you know, once the winter kicks in again, I think there will be a lot more, you know, people will chime in more.
• 23:28
But really it's the people that are riding year-round that I'm interested in, and I've learned stuff on there, and I've been doing this since 2011.
• 23:35
So I, I really appreciate that people are bringing their expertise in, and, uh, I get to be a fly on the wall for once. Yeah. Lurking. Lurking. I'm lurking. Very cool. In my gherkin.
• 23:46
People that are, people- What's a gherkin? Yeah, people are, are just kinda like throwing like- I hate pickles. I know you do. [laughs] I almost picked up a s- Oh. We have... Okay. All right.
• 23:54
We have, um, Pabst Blue Ribbon- Yeah... has a pickle variation. Oh. So apparently it's like pickle spiked PBR, and Sven over here detests pickles. I ain't liking no pickles. You don't like it? Oh my God.
• 24:09
I'm not a pickle fan. If you ever seen him in a restaurant, he, at times he has like taken it and thrown it. At the window perhaps. Yes. I mean- [laughs] Why?... I was like, "Whoa."
• 24:20
There is a definite hatred To be fair, to be fair, are, is it the, are you, uh, do you not like the vinegar, like the pickles that are in the vinegar, or do you not like the ones that are in the brine?
• 24:30
I just- Have you had the ones that are in the brine? It's actually just a pickle in general, because I don't mind- [laughs]... pickled, other pickled things I don't mind. I don't mind- Something happened to him...
• 24:37
I don't mind relish. I don't mind... It's probably because most of the pickles I see on my normal, everyday fast food stuff- I didn't ask for it... are shitty pickles. And JK's onto something here.
• 24:48
Why does every sandwich we get all the time, at least here in the US, come with a pickle on the plate automatically? I didn't ask for that pickle. Why is it on the plate?
• 24:56
Some pickle salesman was out there going, "You gotta put a pickle on every plate." It was brilliant that one time when you were like, "No pickles," and one [laughs] and this sandwich came out with like
• 25:10
15 pickle slices- Oh, I, yeah... all over it. That was a comedic relief from my buddy in the kitchen. Oh, yeah, yeah. Yeah. Funny- I was like, "Ooh." Funny guy. That was, uh, that was at my Gilly Daddy's.
• 25:19
I remember that. Oh, and, and you know what? We- Don't you, don't you guys... What?
• 25:23
Well, here's the other thing that, that happens, is the waitress, knowing that her job is, you know, to make me happy, at least at that point- Mm-hmm... puts on the thing, "No pickles."
• 25:33
And then she goes back to pick the food up and there's pickles on there, but all she does is brush them away. Mm-hmm. And then I get- Right... pickle juice still. I'm like, "You know what? You just fucked up."
• 25:44
It's called brine. [laughs] But, uh, oh, oh yeah. And then the communal with it speared through the top. Oh, yeah. Where it's infected the bun now. My God, what the hell? So I almost, I wanted to buy it.
• 25:58
I have to buy it just to try it at some point, but I know it- Don't you guys- It would, it wouldn't work as a show breather... deep fry them down there? What's that?
• 26:06
Do, do you guys not deep-fry, uh, I mean to try the deep, do you, down there do you deep-fry them? No. Do you guys fry the pickles? It's, it's, it has happened. Well, wait, wait. It's, it's known to happen.
• 26:14
Just wait till August at, at Wisconsin State Fair. They deep-fry every single thing you can possibly imagine. Yeah. I think they actually deep-fry milk. Oh, wow. Just gross. Or I don't know.
• 26:26
There's something new every year- Yeah... that you would not expect. Like deep-fried Twinkies were super awesome for a long time. Yeah.
• 26:31
And you know, there's things that are kind of, kind of givens, but somebody will come up every year with something you're like, "I did not realize you could fry that."
• 26:38
Well, yeah, it was like a, like a deep-fried Coca-Cola. So it was like Coca-Cola and it was like, it, it was a mixture of like Coca-Cola and Bisquick or something like that, where it was just like fritters essentially.
• 26:52
Oh. Just Coca... I don't know. It was d- yeah. Anything- Whatever, whatever you can throw in a batter... anything you can make seven bucks off of. Oh, yeah. At least. Yeah. Jesus.
• 27:01
So let me, uh, w- since we were just talking about the, the Fat Bike Lab, I got, uh, just a couple questions for you, and this is not holding your feet to the fire here, but, uh, if, if, is there some, like we have a few, uh, categories where you can post stuff.
• 27:17
I don't know if people normally just throw it in the general discussion or they actually go to the categories, but are there things that we're not getting deeper into that might make sense to have a category that you've thought about?
• 27:29
Trying to think. You might have to leave that with me, because mo- for most everything, when I've looked on there, there's a pretty good balance as, as from what I can see.
• 27:36
And the stuff that I have either commented on or put a post on, um, I might e- I don't know how many, I don't know how many different, how many different categories is there.
• 27:46
Are there f- like something like five or something like that? Um, uh, could I, uh...
• 27:49
Well, there's a, see, well, the, the thing about how this, this particular community thing is set up is right now there's one, two, three, four that are visible and- Right...
• 27:59
and there's one, two, three, there's three more. So there's Discussion, Photos and Videos, Question of the Week, which we've been kinda slacking on.
• 28:07
Um, Events, Trail Reports and Conditions, and Ride Buddies and Meetings. Right. Oh, and Gear and Tinkering Lab, which would be where your brake situation comes in and stuff.
• 28:15
Uh, one I'm thinking about adding, and I, I don't know what the community will think about this, but, and I don't know how we would, you know, distance ourselves from the deals, but should there be some kind of like for sale or trade swap or, you know, some kinda deal where I got a whole garage full of fat bike stuff I don't want anymore, who needs it?
• 28:36
Or can I make some money selling that somehow, you know? I, I don't know. Uh, some- something like a, not a Facebook Marketplace, but you know, a marketplace. Pantry. A fat bike pantry. A pantry. A pantry. A pantry.
• 28:48
A pantry. I don't like the, I like the pantry idea. It's a pantry. Maybe it could be something like you just ask a question, "Does, I'm looking for such and, the such and such.
• 28:57
Does anybody out there have a spare that's sitting in a, in a box somewhere that they're not using?" Yeah, that might be like a wanted. Dead or a- wanted. Sure. Like a, yeah.
• 29:05
Uh, and I, and I have, you know, a, I don't really, I don't own a company that makes fat bikes anymore, and my shop is kind of waning. Uh, I do know that, uh, one of the dudes is definitely still Smokestone.
• 29:18
He's still a, you know, a, a, a going concern. And there's some other people on there that are affiliated with shops and whatnot, and I, I don't wanna, you know, squash them down.
• 29:27
But I'd like to have a place where if you wanna talk about what your commerce thing is, here's where you can do it. You can tell us- Right...
• 29:36
all about your technical knowledge, all about your bikes, all about everything else. But being all salesy, uh, I would kinda rather have that in one area so that we know- Like a-...
• 29:45
that you're, you know, hawking your wares, and that's fine. Like a commercial Tinder. Yeah, your com- the commercial section. [laughs] Commercial Tinder, Grindr. I don't know, I don't know if, if you'd find that useful.
• 29:55
I, you know, the, the days of, uh, you know, old fatbike.com where stuff was coming out every week and we could have like a bunch of posts about new stuff are, you know, those are kinda behind us right now. Mm-hmm.
• 30:06
In fact, I don't know if you- Well, there is- I don't know if you saw this recently, uh, but our good buddy Wyatt over at, uh, Wyatt Bicycles right down the way in Bangor, Wisconsin, so not very far from us, after 15 years, is, he just said, "I, I'm not doing it anymore."
• 30:23
So, uh, one of the, one of the, one of the best guys in the business made some of the best US-made fat bikes decided that he had to hang it up and couldn't make it work anymore. Yeah. Well, you know what?
• 30:35
Just, just on that, uh, in my town here, we had originally, a, a few years back now, we had four bike shops. And they were not a large... It's not a large... It's 170,000 people. But now at this point, just not...
• 30:51
I don't think it had anything to do with one thing or another, but we don't have any shops now. Wow.
• 30:56
Our closest shop now is within a 20-minute to a half-an-hour drive, and that's these bigger, you know, shops that are kinda like, uh, franchise-type shops. Yeah, big boxes. Yeah. We don't really have any... Yeah.
• 31:08
Well, that's what's- So, um- I mean, that is what's happening here too through, uh... I mean, COVID sorta killed my shop. We kept it going as a, uh, appointment only, and we're still doing some stuff.
• 31:20
But, uh, there was... There's a couple shops recently that have closed in our area, and what's left is the big guys, Wheel & Sprocket, which is huge, and ERIK'S, which is out of Minneapolis. So- Right...
• 31:31
it, it just- Keep on keeping on, Truly- Yeah, and Tru-... Truly Spoken... and Truly Spoken. Our [laughs] good buddy. That's, uh, yeah, sorry.
• 31:37
Uh, close, uh, uh, Un- Un- unbelievably, um, magnanimous guy because, uh, uh, he's not in it for the money. He's in it because he likes doing it, and he likes giving people that need it
• 31:49
the good deal, and he likes giving people that don't need it the big check. [laughs] As well, uh- Yeah... bless their damn heart... he's semi-socialist, I guess, right? I don't know. Mm-hmm.
• 32:02
Anyway, uh- So was Wyatt, Wyatt, Wyatt Bikes, his were, uh, titanium frames, right? Uh, aluminum. Is that right? No, they were aluminum, and they were- Oh, okay... and they weren't ridiculously expensive.
• 32:12
For being made in the US, they were on par with, uh- Yeah... your other big, big, big name brand places who, by the way- Well, they had... He had one Ti, didn't he? No, never had a Ti. No?
• 32:23
Yeah, 'cause they made all their stuff. Why- They didn't- Why am I... Hmm They didn't buy it from somewhere else. They made their own stuff.
• 32:29
And you know, his, his deal was that he figured out how to make, uh, components that fit together on the frame, like at the chain stay and the, and the yoke, uh, by the seat stay, so that they were easy to jig up and they were basically easy to weld because they were, they were self-aligning.
• 32:47
It was really a cool deal. Uh- He was a very smart guy. I'm just sad that he can't make it work in, in our...
• 32:55
Even the big companies can't, and obviously the, uh, Johnny come latelies to the fat bike thing, the Specialized and the Treks came in- Mm...
• 33:03
reaped what, you know, they could and then just threw the chafe to the wind, and now they're done, so. Do, would you, do you prefer, like... I know for me, it's always been this way.
• 33:15
It has nothing to do with the current climate or whatever, but if I see a product that's, that, that I, that I know either where it comes from or it's made in Canada or it's, it's, it's like a, um, somewhere local or somebody that I, you know, I can go back to for a service or, uh, technical information or whatnot, I prefer, even if it costs me a little more, I prefer to buy those.
• 33:35
I seek those things out. Yep. And I know a lot of people don't 'cause they're, you know, price point is a big deal. Sure. But I have found that it's important to try to support those, those guys when you can- Yeah...
• 33:47
for sure. Well, this is, uh, so this is just, uh, today, so Sealy Dave, you've heard him on the show before, I'm sure. Yes. Yep.
• 33:54
Uh, so he's a, you know, he's an avid fat biker, although he's working right now on a, I think it's a Spearfish maybe, a Salsa or something, and it is for his more, uh, bike packing but lightweight stuff in the summer.
• 34:09
And he wanted a wheel set, and he wanted it to be American made if it could be. So we're looking at Onyx hubs and Berd spokes, and, and we're looking at, uh, Velocity rims, so it's all US stuff, which is great. Mm-hmm.
• 34:22
Uh, and then I said, "Well, you know, Dave, a lot of people are going with those We Are One, uh, rims that are made up there in Canada."
• 34:29
[laughs] So he's like, "Oh, well, I guess I could be North American maybe because-" There you go... "That'll save me a, that'll save me a pound and a half on my wheels or something." I don't know. It was a lot of weight.
• 34:39
Right. A pound is a pound. So, so, so, so he decided to go with those.
• 34:42
But the funniest thing he said was, um, he, he has a micro spline set up, and I don't know if this place makes other things, but he's got a Ukrainian cassette on his bicycle. Oh, what? Yeah. He bought it- Okay...
• 34:54
because it was from [laughs] Ukraine. I'm like, whoa. He, it, so- Okay... so he's, he's following the edict that you're saying is, you know, support what you love and, and, and not who you don't and blah, blah, blah.
• 35:05
Mm-hmm. Yeah, that's wild. [laughs] It, it is wild. I, I'm just saying, he's sporting Canadian too up there. Uh- Yeah. No, it's, it's good. We do, we do have some...
• 35:19
We have a couple of really, really good things up here. Um, uh, 9.8, you know, the dropper posts, they're, they're literally within a half hour's drive from my house. They're, they're... You know, those guys are great.
• 35:29
They got, you know, tons of stuff. I got two of their dropper posts on my bikes. Um, what else have I heard you say? Don't they make...
• 35:35
Doesn't 9.8 make those fancy, uh, upside down pedals that we put the spikes in our shoes on? They... Yes. Yeah. They make those too. They make, they make kinda... They kinda do everything. They kinda like have the farm.
• 35:43
Tony loves those things. To- uh, uh, the not here today Tony, he loves those things. The Earth Quail Tony. Yeah. I don't not love them.
• 35:51
Um, in fact, my, my winter boots have spikes on them, so it makes perfect sense to use them in the winter. Uh, but yeah, 9.8. I thought they'd be a great beach pedal 'cause aren't they... Are they soft?
• 36:02
Is the rubber in the pedal itself soft? Uh, we- Like, you could put flip-flops on and ride with those things, or? It's not super soft, but because you're- Right... jamming big chunks of carbide steel into them.
• 36:13
It's, yeah, it's like a- Yeah... uh, like a, a corkboard. Yeah, it is flat though. I mean- Okay. Like a- Yeah... like a- Yep... a spongy corkboard. Yeah, you can ride them.
• 36:21
I mean, the only thing is y- if you ride them when they're, when it's wet out, they're a little slick, but because there's no... If there were a concave to them, I might see a little more about riding them- Yeah...
• 36:30
without spikes in your shoes. But really, the honest thing is they made them for, um, like your British Columbia crazy people on the big hills out there. That's what they kinda made them for.
• 36:43
It's kind of, uh, but yeah, I mean, innovation comes in strange places, but sometimes it, it still hits the fat bike market and it makes sense. Well, I guess, yeah, if it works for us, it works. I mean, yeah, they can...
• 36:57
It, it's a good company. I'm, I've enjoyed their stuff for sure, and it works well, and it's easy, e- easily. They give you the whole diagram. You can pull their seat posts apart by yourself.
• 37:07
You don't need to necessarily... They're not, they're air actuated, but they're, but it's with a pump. Everything's really simple. You can pull it all apart. You can do all the greasing yourself.
• 37:15
You can do all the maintenance yourself if you want to. You can send it to them if you want to. So I like that feature too as well.
• 37:20
If you're real handy, you can, you can take it upon yourself and tear it apart and order the parts and rebuild it, and if not, you send it away. I like that idea. I, I, I haven't seen them yet.
• 37:29
Uh, I haven't been a dropper post guy for a couple years, but I'm getting back, I'm getting... Before next winter, because it's way better having a dropper in the winter. [laughs] Yeah. All right, man.
• 37:42
Well, I appreciate you, uh, waiting with us through the technical maelstrom that affected us- [laughs]... last week and, uh, and taking your time to do this again this week. So
• 37:54
any, anything- Yeah, I just sat here all week. I just sat here the entire time. [laughs] I just sat and listened. It's like, "Hello. Hello. Hello. Hello." Those fucking- "Hello. Hello." Fucking guys. Fucking guys.
• 38:04
Are they gonna... Fucking guys. Are they gonna call us back? [laughs] Uh- They're just, they're just, they're just funning me. They're just funning me. [laughs] Anything, anything we should know before we go?
• 38:13
You got any big festivals coming up that way or...? Not, not as, not in, in the near future.
• 38:19
We just, like, we did the quick bike packing trip, uh, me and a friend of mine that's is on these, the School, uh, Rory, and, uh, we did a little trip down there.
• 38:27
We had three absolute Goldilocks days, and that was, uh, perfect weather, perfect trip, no mechanicals. It was awesome. So yeah, I can talk to yous about that next time, but- Yeah... I just wanna wish you guys...
• 38:38
I know I won't be on the next before, uh, you guys got a big, uh, 250th birthday party, and I wanna wish- [laughs]... uh, you know, you guys to have a good time. So, and- Oh, yeah. Yeah.
• 38:47
That's on somebody's birthday here. What? I don't know what. That's on- What?... Sven's birthday. What's that about? My God. When that, well, we- [laughs] Yeah.
• 38:54
Well, yeah, actually, my birthday is July 4th, so you can wish me a 250th birthday. [laughs] Is that right? That's awesome. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. There you go. Happy. Yeah. I, I don't know.
• 39:02
I, I mean, I mi- I might step back from that. I'm not sure I like my, you know. [laughs] Don't, don't associate me- I like, I don't-... with this goddamn shit. [laughs] Well, I didn't even...
• 39:10
I, to be honest, I never liked my birthday being on the 4th of July because I'm competing with the freaking country as a whole. And now on the semi- Right. Yeah... cent- swin- ken- je- ken- je- centennial. Semi.
• 39:21
Cent- swin- fri- fri- fri- fri- je- je- Yeah. Yeah. Whatever. Yeah. All right. All right. Thanks very much for calling in. Okay.
• 39:27
Uh, you made this show easy because, uh, Tony wasn't here, so we didn't have somebody that could talk the entire time. Well, you know what?
• 39:34
Tell Tony I said hello, and, uh, ne- and whenever you get, we'll get a hold of each other, and, uh, I'll see you in the future. All right. Right on. Thank you. Have a nice one. Enough. Bye. Yep. See ya. Bye. Bye-bye.
• 39:47
All right. All Roy, everybody, we finally- All Roy... got him on the freaking phone. Mm-hmm. Apparently, uh, old, old tech is better than new tech in this case. Mm-hmm. I know.
• 39:57
Uh, I don't know if we have to rehash all that stuff. I think I might just kinda just throw a little quick three- Splash through... 3-333/x or something. Yeah.
• 40:07
And go like- Because we did talk about a bunch of crap last week, but- Yeah... you- And just go blap. Yep. Put that in there. Don't care. And then go blap. Either, either you listen to it or you don't.
• 40:16
It's not really up to me. It's up to you. If you don't wanna listen to it, don't listen to it. I gotta go potty. Okay. Well, here's something I'm gonna try, 'cause I don't even- [laughs]...
• 40:24
I don't even know what this is. Uh, we don't... Uh.
• 40:29
  [upbeat music]
