- Devin Davis: All right. Welcome everyone to the 307 Faithful Podcast. This is Devin Davis. This is a Fellowship of Christian Athletes podcast. And this is part two of our interview with Coach Bo Sheets. Bo was here a couple of weeks ago just preparing to go to FCA sports camp in Laramie. And so I just asked him to come back. Kind of my vision was, we talked about it, is to get a before and after basically to to get your experience. Bo was his first time as a coach at at FCA camp. And so we're here to pick your brain about what happened with sports camp. So I guess, you know, just looking at it, tell us first of all, just just to set everything up is tell us what your role was, at at least in your in your sport. going for sure. So I I went for the the boys' basketball side. So I was coaching on specifically on the boys basketball. So that was that was my main role was coaching the kids up through our different practices. And yeah, I had one of the one of the best jobs there. How many would you say? I mean, I know I I I kinda remember there's there was a bunch of coaches. How many coaches for boys basketball would you say there was? Yeah, I would say that there was six coaches. I'd have to count up, but I think we had six basketball coaches and then all the huddle leaders, of course. Did you were you h have a relationship or friendship with any of the coaches at all before camp. I didn't know any of the guys. So that was it was a blessing to to get to know, you know, fellow Christian coaches and I mean state champions from this year and another past. So quality coaches. again, wish wish I'd have known them sooner. Yeah. Yeah. But it was it was great to get to know him. I think that's one of the things that we tend to overlook is is, you know, we focus on the camper and and the camper experience and that's great. But the the fellowship of coaches. I just hear so many good things from from coaches. and how about what was what would you say about your number of athletes what was yeah I I think it's probably about right. I if I remember right we had right at 80 players. Right. So with three courts, you know, splitting them up. it it went really good to kind of get different levels. but I again it's a full gym Great facilities at the University of Wyoming. So we were we were blessed to be able to have some really solid competitive practices. Good. And you guys, did you move around a little bit on what gyms you used there? Yeah. We used so I mean the the main gym that we were in was what I forget the name. Was it Hells Half Acre? Yeah, it's half acre and then we got into the arena for one practice, which was fun too. did you? Yeah. You get to go I got to play on that. So It's we probably need to re rename Hell's Half Acre, huh? Angel's Half Acre. Angel's Half Acre, I like it. Something like that. But that's not really a great FCA. Lots of history there, it sounds like. man. Going back forever and ever. My dad went to the Wyoming and remembers playing on there. So yeah, that's that's a great place to play. And so and your wife and your daughters were able to go and so how was that experience as a family? I know You s you mentioned or maybe Tara did about talking about camp on the way back from Laramie, but how'd that go? that that would that was probably a highlight, you know, getting to to drive back and and all of us just talking about our camp experience all the way home was it's not typically what happens after camp. Usually everyone's sleeping in the back seat and and I'm driving up front. But as a family, you know, specifically for for Tara and I as as a couple, for her to get to go, she didn't know what to expect, just like I didn't know what to expect, but connecting with other coaches' wives and they had Bible studies and they went on you know a a hike and went to some coffee shops and did some shopping, but really just got it was more the fellowship, getting to know the the other wives that that were there from around the state was I I think she probably enjoyed that just as much as as the campers did. That's I know she she shared that with me. She gave me sent a picture along and so It's a really neat thing and I and that's one of the things, you know, I'm hoping that our audience hears, especially any coaches that are thinking about going. It's great to go as a as a coach. It's better to take your spouse or your kids if you have kids. So yeah, I I can't recommend it enough. It was the the only bad thing was we hadn't been doing it the last 10 years. You know, that's probably the the the only thing. Yeah. So and then one of the things too at at nighttime that I I I think they really enjoy doing is kind of just a social time for coaches and and their spouses. And I I mean, that's always really well attended. It is. It was it was again like we talked about getting to know the other coaches from around the state, other sports, other classifications, because you're so involved in in your sport. So for like us us and for a basketball, we get to know the guys in the West really well. But then the guys in the east you kind of know okay. And then if it's any other classifications, you just don't have time to yeah to get to know them. So getting to reach out and f and find out what's what the other classes are doing and then the other sports, you know, it's it's just you build those relationships that that you'll continue throughout the years. That's that's awesome. And I and so I I I think looking at that and and kind of more about it, was there I mean, just cutting true to the chase a little bit, was there like one big experience or time like like really impacted you where you were just like, wow, God, I mean you showed up here big time. You know, I I think it's kind of the iron sharpens iron, you know, being around other coaches, seeing players, seeing athletes, seeing the huddle leaders that just on fire for the Lord, that they can come together and just see that the strength kind of the of the other athletes and coaches, it's just an encouragement. I mean, obviously the the evening sessions were great. Yeah. I mean the messages, I I think that I heard from a lot of players that there's quite a few nights that the kids were just they didn't have dry eyes. They, you know, would would be drawn to tears because of the message. And you know, I for me as an athlete, I know I would have gone because of the sports component. And I think that's probably what draws a lot of athletes there. But then you know, hearing the feedback that the the evening sessions with kind of the sermons or the message and then their time in their huddles was it surpassed even what the sports did. Yeah. I think that's kind of the I'm I I'm I'm glad you, you know, you learned about that because to me that as I've gone for the last few years, it seems like I just hear over and over about the the time that the campers get with their huddle leaders. that that's where some really good conversations and questions happen, a lot of growth. But That's kind of where I I think where the rubber meets the road a lot of times in our Christian faith. And being able to talk about hard things and that's why those huddle leaders are so important. I had Brenna Metzler on last time and she was a huddle leader for volleyball and just couldn't say enough good things and already has signed up for next year or said, Man, sign me up again. And so I think that was really good. Your Huddle leaders, did you get to know any of any of those kids? I mean, I think you had some pretty good athletes over. We did, you know, and and as a whole, looking at at the different kind of quality of coaches and athletes that we had there. I mean, we had numerous D one athletes throughout the sports, some some professional players that are currently playing that were coaching. I know on the football side they had some guys that'll probably get drafted into the NFL. you know, on the on the playing side, you know, to have the The Gatorade Player of the Year, the competition was great, but getting to know those huddle leaders was pretty intense because you get to know their stories and see that you know they they played at the next level. they've experienced what the kids have experienced. And it's it's kind of like trying to fulfill yourself through the sport is is pretty empty. So, you know, for the players to hear that from the guys that are just older than them, that are playing in college, I think it's a huge impact because you know, us coach us coaches are really old people. And it's hard to listen to us at times. But the yeah for the for the players to hear it from those huddle leaders, I think is the is the most valuable. Yeah, that's a great point, really, right? Is hearing from guys who ha are competing at the next level, have been successful, about what really matters the most. especially for some of those kids that are kind of upperclassmen headed into their junior senior years, and really having a mindset of Man, I need to glorify Christ through my sport rather than like, what am I going to accomplish? And that's, I mean, I think that's a message that we hear over and over because I obviously our tendency flesh wise is to want accolades and recognition and and that our our worth is based on that. so it's really cool to hear high level athletes say, no, it's not. Yeah, that and that was a consistent message of of a lot of their testimonies was, you know, trying to achieve that, you know, kind of that satisfaction. And it never came. You know, it was always you know, it felt like you're getting there, and then there's always one more thing, or an injury, or a coach's decision, or, you know, all these things dictate kind of your happiness. but to hear them say that, you know, when they could finally figure out how to put their security in in Jesus, that Even the even the the sports part took an advancement because they were playing free. They weren't stressed. They were you know, kind of playing the that no matter what, they knew where their security came from. Amen. you know, what was your takeaway from how it impacted your girls? Yeah, it was it was again the needed It was perfect for what, you know, kind of what our family needed. Not that we were going through anything specific, but just to see the motivation of kind of what's truly important and you know, kinda hear about you know, their the times they look forward to most was the messages, was their huddle leaders. We I we've already talked about that, but kind of keeping that focus where it needs to be. I just wish we could get more kids there. Yeah. you know. going into the seasons and even throughout the season because yeah I mean that that priority is is easy to talk about, but it's it's especially important when they can see it at camp. They see the other players doing it, they see the huddle leaders, and it just makes it real. Yeah. It's and it's you know, I think the biggest challenge and I thought, you know, our speaker was Josh Longoria. I think everybody might have heard me talk about that with with Brennan, but Josh was great. He was. and I really, really enjoyed that he pressed home the message on the last day of just ha you know going home. I mean, because it's a little bit like a slice of heaven there for a few days. Yeah. You know, just being around other believers, prayer all over the place, at all times. just mindset of of like I'm gonna give everything I have because he gave everything he had. Yep. But going home is gonna be the hard part, right? It is. Yeah, and and having those connections, I think it it was neat to see how many kind of Fremont County athletes we had and and from the other schools and so kind of having those connections, you hope that they can continue those and then n seeing kind of the coaches that that are there too that kind of encourage the kids, the players throughout the year. But you're right. I mean, going home is the hardest part, whether you're a coach, whether you're a huddle leader, whether you're an athlete. is staying connected. Yeah. to those to kind of help, you know, just help help motivate you and and kind of keep you accountable is is key for all of us. And and I like that the the players had that and they can see it on a daily basis. Yeah. And that I mean and you know that's it you know we're he did a great job of just just saying, hey, this is the real world. And you guys are going to face a lot of opposition when you go home from your own friends, from your own family members. I mean that that last day, several of those testimonies. man. Yeah. To see see what and see and hear what some of the kids have gone through. you know, I I just always kind of assume that everything's going well for every kid. Yeah. And then to hear kind of a lot of their testimonies about, you know, the week was perfect for what they needed. And yeah, it just pressed on to me how important camp is and and even our huddles on a daily on a weekly basis that the kids have somewhere to go to kind of to hear the truth and and know that you know what they're going through, you know, there's somebody there for Yeah. I yeah, it was some of those like I agree with you on that is like we I think we don't have a clue what your average teenager yeah is experiencing in the world today. and it and it kind of breaks your heart. It does. But it also I think it it really drives home the fact that we really, really need to be intentional. at listening, more intentional at praying, and and just really like you said, really I see the importance for FCA on campuses to have a place, a safe place to go where where kids aren't going to be judged, and I hope not in any ways. They're not gonna be judged at Riverton Lander or Shoshone. I mean, we we welcome everyone because we all are sinners and we all need Jesus, but it's it's a tough world. It is and like you said, the importance of having, you know, that that seed planted because again, just for those few kids and there's there was a bunch of that gave their testimony, you know, if they aren't at camp, where are they gonna hear it? Yeah. Amen. And and for our schools, you know, if if if they don't hear it at FCA, if that seed's not planted of hey, you know, you've never been before, but we'd like you to come and they find out that you know, that message it's it's amazing what what God can place on your heart for when you need it and Yeah, I you you kind of forget w how much need there is until you hear those stories. Yeah, amen. Like that that everybody is made in the image of God and everybody is special. We all struggle, but yeah, just because you might be the Gatorade player of the year, yeah, doesn't make you any better than the guy that is sits on the bench and very gets very little playing time, right? And yeah, for sure. Well it and it it kind of you know brings home the message of We put so much value on wins and losses and whatever the stats are in every sport, but but to hear those kind of life-changing moments for the kids, it it puts it in perspective. And and I think there is obviously that that avenue to to reach everybody through sports, which is still great, but you know, the importance of you know, that daily game definitely takes a back seat. Yeah. Yeah. That message like s you know, we we've we've made sports kind of an idol on our culture, but there is a Awesome purpose up for sports about showing them the lessons that they need for later down the road for life, really. You know, a microcosm of that. No, for sure. And and to, you know, to glorify God through through what you're doing, whether you're working or playing. yeah, it's it's it's fun when you can see those athletes that don't really have anything that holds them back, that they glorify God, that they go for it. And yeah, you know, it was it was neat to see too some of our Like said, some of our kids that we've coached here and other places that we know really well as huddle leaders to kind of give their their testimonies. I th I thought that night, you know, of of Parker giving his testimony in front of everybody was pretty neat and just that transformation. Yeah. you know, to where now they're leading for the kind of the younger players to follow. Yeah, it yeah, the amen to that. That was so good to hear Parker's testimony. I knew you'd really enjoy that because coaching Parker and just really cool transformation story and and I just pray that you know there are a lot of parkers that come out of camp and he's another one that said I'll mark this summer off as long as I as long as I can. So I love it. It was cool to connect with him. So how you know I think the other cool thing was new dorms this year kind of switching gears a little bit. So But you had probably you hadn't had you ever stayed in the old dorms? Nope. No. We we hadn't spent much time on campus except to go to a game here and there. So it was it was fun to to get to stay in, especially with the new dorms. That was yeah that was pretty cool. New new cafeteria. Yep. the the best part and and I Brennan and I talked about that last week is the new dorms have air conditioning. So you fortunately or unfortunately never got to try to exist through a sports camp with 90 degree heat and no air conditioning. So it was pretty miserable really. Yeah, f first world problems, right? Yeah. When when you when you get to sleep at air conditioning at night, it's kind of nice. also, you know, just kind of thinking about that too, is we had a coach's Bible study every morning, which you're a part of ours here in Riverton and and have been faithfully. And I I mean I I love that time. in the in the morning time. I almost wish it just could be a little bit longer. But you know, that ca Nate Lewis and and I think I told you about Nate. Nate and I go way back to when I lived in Shadra Nate did a great job of really digging into first Peter and what did you like about the coaches study? Well I mean obviously the content was really good on First Peter with with talking about just kind of the trials and tribulations of their time that they're going through sounds very similar to what we have to go through at times. But yeah, again, getting to see the other coaches, kind of getting to hear their input. you you know it's good when when basketball coaches and wrestling coaches get together and and and agree on something. So it was it was fun even to get to know some of the wrestling guys. So I I joke about that, but yeah, the the coaches' Bible studies, like you said, looking forward to that in the mornings and you know, we have our coaches Bible study here and it's great to get to know our guys, but to get to know other you know coaches from out of town was was a a treat. Yeah, it was it was a lot of fun. And Coach Sheets sat with Coach Shadow from Sheridan, who I've known for a long time. Tyson is such a great, great guy and it's just been is a whole new different person and has grown so much in his faith. And then Coach Gassaway who you knew from from Lander and and then Coach Brightman jumped in once in a while. But I I like, you know, the the it was fun. The the icebreaker I guess you'd call it. Nate brought brought along notebook or not but a little small pamphlet with questions. Yep. and I like, man, that's kind of a a cool idea really for your team. or even maybe for our Bible studies, just kind of just some something to break the ice and yeah. And some of the questions, you know, were pretty deep and some of them were just very surface level. So it it kind of takes pressure off having to come up with something. So you just yeah, you know, pick a number and and you know, discuss how that's impacting you. Yeah. And I I think, you know, I I think those discussions, I mean, it's that's how we learn and how we grow. I mean, just like in our conversations when you mention something and it's like, man, that I never even thought about it that way before, you know? And so I I I enjoy that and good just a good time to get together in the morning. what was the hardest was there was there a hard part about camp or something maybe that you didn't expect. Yeah, I I think all of it was was pretty good, you know, sleeping on a dorm bed when you're you know old guy like us that's used to having your own bed at home. But we we loved camp. you know, you you do have a new respect for those that put camp on and all the details that go into it. So, you know, to to go as, you know, just a coach is kind of nice because you show up and and I'm coaching basketball. I don't have to to plan everything and you see the kind of the intense amount of time that the huddle leaders put in because they are there with with the players, you know, almost 24 seven. And and that's the that's how they get so close with them. And and I think, you know, asking the Huddle leaders their growth throughout the week is big because again they they do have those athletes, you know, in their team and being able to go through those tough questions. So As a coach, I mean it was it was kind of like a vacation to coach and we just got to enjoy kind of the camaraderie and and the motivation that comes with with seeing the kids play hard, you know, but glorify the Lord. Yeah. I that that is I mean, it was it it they were more comfortable than the the the old dorms. Like again, I go back to that, but still not not quite the same, but it was it was pr it was really neat. I think the hardest thing though with I mean, that you put on a lot of miles when you're at camp. Yep. walking from the arts and sciences sciences auditorium clear over to, you know, the field house or whatever. That's that's a lot of walking really. Those are some long days. Man, and those can those huddle leaders that are there a couple of days before we are, that stay up past when we go to bed. Yep. and and so I I know how tired I was. Did it take you a little while to recuperate? It did, you know, those are full days and and you enjoy it, but y you know, kinda like when you get home, it's like, man, that's it's good to it's good to be there for a few days and not for an extended period of time, that's for sure. Did do not disturb that you didn't get any. Now we're gonna have to start from there. Okay, yeah. But we'll we'll Yeah. So 'cause it has the square, it looks like it's it's uploading right now. See we can splice those together. All right, we had a little disturbance there. Apologize for that. We're gonna see if we can put these two together. So, we were just talking about, you know, being kind of physically exhausted. I I think we you know, we both were tired. I can't imagine what the huddle eaters did. but when you get back home, I think you're physically exi exhausted, but spiritually, man, just on fire. Yeah, I would agree and it's it's motivating to to get back to kind of have that to have your vision, you know, you c you kinda get in your daily routine when you're back home, so to get to go to camp and see that vision, you know, see that kind of the other athletes and coaches and huddle leaders are needing each other. I mean that I agree. I was definitely the motivation factor was increased. Yeah. So I you know it I when we come home from camp, I think the you you know, just looking back over it and and I mentioned we kinda have pow wow on Tuesday of all the the le the reps around the state and talk about the camp and what we can change or what we can do for for next year. I think I was like you said in setting in the background, I was I'm always amazed. I mean there's always going to be bumps in the road and obstacles, but I I think there were you know a few minor things that got worked out with camp and I think with the number of kids that we had, the number of coaches and huddle leaders, things rent went really, really well. But I I also just say like what can we you know what can we take home from that camp? what is it that you know Coach Bo Sheets took home from sports camp that he's going to try to implement going forward into who he is as a as a man but as a coach as well. Well, I think it's it's just to improve upon what's already there. I mean, to have almost a thousand people on on campus and figure out the logistics of that. I'm amazed it gets done. Yeah. but kinda from the the sports and the coaching side of it, like I said, to see see the other high level coaches that were there, you know, there was state ch champions from football, basketball, soccer, I'm sure there were others just from this year. And and then the quality players that were there might my takeaway was how do we get more of those those leaders in those seats at camp because you know we we want to see them continue to take those steps forward in their growth with their their walk with the Lord and then you know they're gonna bring it back and apply it to their teams. And so having those those leaders on each of the teams with a a Christ focus, I I think that's gotta be the goal of each of us coaches and And and players too, 'cause that's the best recruiting toll is when players say, Hey, I went this year, loved it. You should go, you should come with me next year. So I think it's just getting more of those 'cause we want the leaders. We we want those players who play at a high level, who, you know, leave it all on the field or on the court, on the mat. And then when people see that they're doing it at a high level, they're like, Why are they different? Yeah. Yeah. That's great. So I mean that that would be the only thing I'd say is Let's let's keep building it. Yeah. You know, with quality and quantity. Yeah, those those kids, those they change the school, right? I mean, and and I think that's the great thing about FCA is it's so student athlete oriented. minister to the coaches, we you know, I mean you guys have a huge impact, but really you're you're right, R that those kids going back to their campuses are the ones who are really gonna impact their friends and their teams and everything else like that. So And what and what do coaches want? The best teams are the ones where their their players are the ones that that lead that that work hard without having to be kind of externally motivated from the coach yellow and or trying to give them incentive. So when that's a coach's dream is to have leaders that kind of give it all and and especially when they can have high character behind it too. Yeah. I mean makes your job easier. Yeah. It does. Yep. It really does. man. that's yeah, those are those are really, really good thoughts. And I I think spiritually do you f feel did you feel challenged by any part of the message that Josh gave throughout the week. big time. I mean it feels like when when you have someone that is a quality speaker like that that that lets the Lord lead through them, the Holy Spirit plants stuff inside of each of us. So I felt like he was talking directly to me. And the concept of just abiding, you know, with the vine and the branches. You know, and there was kind of one thing where we show kind of what we're doing by the fruit we produce. And and not that it's because of works, because that's not our salvation. But yet you know, when we abide in the Lord, there's gonna be evidence of it. Yeah. And yeah, that was that was a big concept for me and and daily and hourly and by the minute I mess up on it, but yet you know, to lean more on on Jesus to to abide in what he wants for us and even just be with him, you know, is is the part that I took away. Yeah. I think th I mean that was the big word right a buy it and and I I mean you know, how many times have we read that passage really and he just drove that really home as You know, we are we are nothing unless we're connected to Christ. Correct. Yep. and that's that abide word. I loved the song that we sang, Teach Me to Abide, and we sang that a couple of times, I think, on Friday, and then one on Saturday, and just to see how the kids were impacted about that. But man, it's it's the it's the daily discipline to remind yourself of that, right? Because our our world gets busy, and it's easy to be distracted from that truth. And I think that's for me one of the big things is just really pressing into that. Yeah, I agree. Yeah, it's easy to say. It is it's hard to do. Yeah. but th but but really truly the k the people that that are in Christ will persevere in that. And and that's and that fruit is the evidence of that. So you know, I think what we have to ask ourselves is what fruit are you bearing, really? Are you producing? Are you producing fruit? Right. And how do you produce fruit? You know, if you're the branches, you have to be connected to the vine to produce that fruit. Yeah. I think I think you gave an a a great analogy of, you know, a Christmas tree has ornaments that are just kind of hanging there and and sometimes we we give that facade that everything's great, that everything's going well and these are ornaments that we've hung up but you know, a true tree producing fruit, you know, it's there's a big difference. Yeah. Yeah. That was that was a really good analogy that he that he made for sure. And you know, and then also the second part is that that abiding and connected to the vine, it it's not always means life is gonna be easy. I mean, as it says, he's gonna come in and prune you and to produce more fruit. The purpose is you know, to to help you to grow in your faith and that pruning sometimes is painful. But but we should, yeah, we should be thankful. I mean, I was just thinking of that the other day. If I wasn't pruned, if I wasn't disciplined, I I probably would not bear the fruit that I'm bearing. and so I'm I as hard as it is, I'm thankful for it, right? Big time. Yeah, those tests that we go through aren't aren't any fun to go through at time at the time and a lot of us wouldn't choose to go through But on the on the you know the back end of it we're we're glad that we've gone through it. Amen. Yeah. Right right. We can look back and yeah. Anyway, that's that's a just a totally different attitude, attitude of gratitude for even the hard things because we know that that that they or are o ordained by God. And if they're ordained by God, therefore are good. And that's hard thing to connect, but that's true. So awesome. So that was Yeah, that was a great camp and and I'm just grateful that you came to camp and brought your family. That that was great. And I just can't thank you enough for the for taking some time out and investing in FCA and it was a blessing to us and like you said it we'll we'll mark it on our calendar. If we're able to go back, we'll be there again. Good. Yeah. So I'm gonna go ahead and and pray for both of us as we wrap up this this episode and It's been a really good one. Hopefully you've gotten a feel. You've had a coach's perspective. You've had a huddle leader's perspective. I actually have a couple more huddle leaders lined up as Coach Sheets and I were talking about. So a couple episodes coming up in the future that I think you'll really enjoy. so I just wanted to thank everybody for listening to the 307 Faithful Podcast and for for streaming these episodes on YouTube, on Spotify. follow us on Instagram. I just before we pray here. I just wanted to give a reminder to everyone that we have FCA Wrestling Camp coming up in Lander in a few weeks. And we have some really high-profile wrestlers from the University of Iowa coming. But more importantly, there are incredible men of God. Coach Marinelli has been involved with a lot with athletes in action. And I think you'll love his story and his testimony along with Gabe Arnold and and Caleb Young. And so there's still still looking for people to sign up. And you can do that at Fca Wyoming.org soon up as sign up as soon as possible. We'd love to have you there. So just wanted to to remind everybody of that. So let's pray. you bet. Father God, we are just grateful for everything you accomplished at FCA camp. Father, we know that there was seeds sown. some came to to know you and and to trust in you as their Lord and Savior. And I just pray that you would continue to strengthen and guide them in that. Some are not quite sure and maybe going home and asking questions. Father, we just know that everything that the enemy has, he's gonna throw against them.
