- 0:44scenes looks at what's
- 0:45happening around the
- 0:47CrossFit world and today I
- 0:49have none other than one of
- 0:51the greatest coaches of all
- 0:52time in the fitness space
- 0:54Justin Kotler what's going
- 0:55on Justin hey Scott how are
- 0:56you bud good to see you I'm
- 0:58good man I'm good um
- 1:01We're going to have a casual
- 1:02conversation tonight.
- 1:03I want to apologize to the listeners.
- 1:06I had a little tech issue.
- 1:07The Rodecaster would not
- 1:08read my microphone for some
- 1:09reason tonight.
- 1:12But we got it fixed.
- 1:14Got it fixed.
- 1:14You sound lovely now, man.
- 1:16Thank you.
- 1:17Thank you.
- 1:18I wish if my wife would only
- 1:20talk to me that way.
- 1:23um so the last time you were
- 1:26on we talked about ivy your
- 1:27daughter yeah I'm going
- 1:29through some stuff so I I
- 1:30did want to quickly get an
- 1:31update from you see how
- 1:32she's doing um from
- 1:34instagram it looks like
- 1:35things are going well um
- 1:37yeah I should hear from you
- 1:39yeah she's doing she's doing great um
- 1:43I think the tough thing
- 1:44about IgA nephropathy,
- 1:46which is the disease that she has,
- 1:50is that most of what's
- 1:52happening is internal.
- 1:55So it's really hard to know
- 1:57exactly how things are going.
- 1:59externally she's amazing you
- 2:01would have absolutely no
- 2:02idea you know what I mean
- 2:03she's she's crushing
- 2:05gymnastics she's she's
- 2:06crushing life in general um
- 2:09but you know uh the the
- 2:12numbers you know that that
- 2:14of your analysis are kind
- 2:16of all over the place and
- 2:17it's still things that that
- 2:18obviously we we need to get under control
- 2:22Um, but you know,
- 2:23the doctors are very hopeful and,
- 2:24and you just have to, you know,
- 2:26have to try to stay as
- 2:27positive as you can and,
- 2:29and we continue to do so.
- 2:30And, you know,
- 2:31but right now she's doing great.
- 2:32And, uh, and so the, the goal is that,
- 2:35you know, hopefully the, the numbers, the,
- 2:37the protein in her urine, um,
- 2:39you know keeps coming down
- 2:40and and you just uh you
- 2:42hope that things trend in
- 2:43the right direction and you
- 2:44know if not you kind of
- 2:46have to pivot and crazy
- 2:47thing about this though is
- 2:48like there's no like
- 2:49protocol for treatment it's
- 2:52it's a rare disease it's
- 2:53it's something that that
- 2:55you know they're still
- 2:56studying to try to find a
- 2:57cure it's something that
- 2:58you know they manage and
- 3:00know they throw a bunch of
- 3:01stuff at the wall and you
- 3:03hope something sticks you
- 3:04know what I mean so between
- 3:06medication and and dietary
- 3:08changes and and supplements
- 3:10fish oil things like that
- 3:12you know we're trying to do
- 3:13all the things that we can
- 3:14do uh and um you know but
- 3:17but obviously you know
- 3:18we're hopeful and you know
- 3:20she's she's doing great
- 3:21right now so um just hoping
- 3:23that that continues and and
- 3:25that we continue to get you
- 3:26know good news as we move forward
- 3:29That's great.
- 3:29That's great.
- 3:30And the rest of the family's doing well.
- 3:32Yeah.
- 3:32Yeah.
- 3:32Everybody's doing good.
- 3:33Um, you know, it's always, uh,
- 3:36it's always tough.
- 3:36I know when I,
- 3:37when I go out of town for Ash with,
- 3:40with Ivy and Jax, you know,
- 3:41an eight year old and a five year old.
- 3:42And, um,
- 3:44but, but, you know,
- 3:45she's amazing and things are going well.
- 3:47And obviously we had a great weekend and,
- 3:50and I posted something
- 3:52today about just like the
- 3:53crash of coming home.
- 3:55And, you know, you're, you're in that,
- 3:57that competitive element for, for,
- 3:59you know, for the weekend.
- 4:01And then all of a sudden you
- 4:02come and it's like silence and trying to,
- 4:05not silence with kids but in
- 4:07general just just you know
- 4:08things are obviously a lot
- 4:10a lot more quiet so just
- 4:11trying to deal with that
- 4:13and you know the kind of
- 4:14the crash after events and
- 4:15stuff and um so I'm in that
- 4:18mode for the this week and
- 4:20uh but soon soon I'll be out of it so um
- 4:23yeah that's got to be tough
- 4:25because I know like ash is
- 4:26kind of taking on a lot and
- 4:27when you come home you want
- 4:28to help her but you're
- 4:30coming down off of this
- 4:31weekend yeah and then your
- 4:33energy's low and you're
- 4:34you're just trying to like
- 4:35rally and and and keep up
- 4:37with the troops yeah
- 4:38thankfully it's not too bad
- 4:40traveling to indianapolis
- 4:41you know what I mean
- 4:42a couple hours.
- 4:43So it's not too bad.
- 4:45It definitely is tougher
- 4:46overseas for sure coming back.
- 4:48But yeah, I mean,
- 4:50I came back and we're
- 4:51pretty much back in the swing of things.
- 4:53So it's just in general,
- 4:55just the mindset of kind of
- 4:58you know, allowing yourself the,
- 5:00a little bit of quiet and then,
- 5:01and then back to,
- 5:02back to the daily grind of,
- 5:04of life and business and
- 5:06children and all that kind of stuff,
- 5:08which is, which is cool, you know?
- 5:10So yeah, so we're, we're back and you know,
- 5:13had some time to reflect on
- 5:14some things and obviously we'll,
- 5:16we'll talk more about that today.
- 5:18so I want to dive into the
- 5:19wfp stuff and then at the
- 5:21end of the show kind of
- 5:22like crossfit season where
- 5:24you're at and how you're
- 5:25going to plan out the rest
- 5:26of the year yeah um and why
- 5:28the strategy you guys took
- 5:29this year was what you did
- 5:31yeah absolutely uh so so
- 5:34wfp was this last weekend
- 5:36um you did okay yeah we did okay
- 5:41OK.
- 5:42And so you go to Indianapolis.
- 5:43First of all,
- 5:46a lot of word out there that
- 5:47like the athletes got
- 5:48shuttled from the from the
- 5:49airport to the hotel.
- 5:52A lot of like little things
- 5:53that were done for the athletes.
- 5:55You as a coach,
- 5:56anything done for you or
- 5:58were you with Alex or how
- 6:00did that go for you?
- 6:01Yeah,
- 6:02she got in a little earlier than I did.
- 6:05I flew in on Thursday,
- 6:07so I flew in the day before.
- 6:10I think in general,
- 6:13just comparing historically
- 6:19things we've had to deal with,
- 6:21I just think we had a lot of access,
- 6:24which is nice.
- 6:27A lot of access...
- 6:29in various ways, you know, not just,
- 6:32you know,
- 6:32having a dedicated spot to watch, but,
- 6:35but, um, I think access in the sense of,
- 6:38of having our opinions heard,
- 6:41which I think is important.
- 6:43Um, and that's not always been the case,
- 6:46um, you know,
- 6:46depending on who kind of is in charge,
- 6:49right.
- 6:50Uh, I'm out of,
- 6:51I've talked several times in the past on,
- 6:55on various podcasts about receiving the,
- 6:58uh,
- 6:59the email from,
- 7:00from CrossFit telling
- 7:01coaches that you're
- 7:02spectators with limited access.
- 7:04And that,
- 7:05that always kind of felt like a gut shot.
- 7:07I was felt like that was disrespectful and,
- 7:09and, and whatnot.
- 7:10But, you know, in general,
- 7:13I would say the last few years,
- 7:15we've definitely had more access in,
- 7:17in CrossFit too.
- 7:19And I felt like this was, you know,
- 7:20along those lines, like,
- 7:21you know more access uh
- 7:24opinions being able to be
- 7:25heard you know we were able
- 7:26to kind of talk to uh the
- 7:28powers that be there about
- 7:30um you know the events and
- 7:32and in our opinions of them
- 7:33which I think is important
- 7:35uh and in general yeah I
- 7:38thought uh overall
- 7:39obviously it was nice to
- 7:40see the athletes being
- 7:41taken care of and uh in
- 7:43general though I just you
- 7:45know I I think going in I
- 7:47wasn't sure what to expect
- 7:48and and obviously I think I left um
- 7:52you know,
- 7:53feeling very positive about the weekend.
- 7:57I know it was on social media a lot.
- 7:59Some of their behind the
- 8:00scenes where like they all had lockers.
- 8:03They had a locker room.
- 8:04It had like a loofah in it.
- 8:05It had some snacks.
- 8:07Yeah.
- 8:08And what it reminded me of
- 8:10is I saw a thing with Mark
- 8:12Cuban a few years back when
- 8:14he first bought the Dallas
- 8:15Mavericks and trying to get
- 8:17free agents to come to the
- 8:19Mavericks as opposed to other teams.
- 8:21Right.
- 8:21And he found that like,
- 8:23It's the little things that
- 8:25bring the free agents, not big things.
- 8:28It was like having a
- 8:29bathrobe in your locker.
- 8:32was a big deal to the players, right?
- 8:35Not like expensive gifts or
- 8:37things like that.
- 8:38Just taking care of these
- 8:39little tiny things made all
- 8:41the difference in the world.
- 8:42And that's what it reminded
- 8:43me of when I saw the behind the scenes.
- 8:46It seemed like the WFP said,
- 8:48how can we do the little
- 8:49things just to take a
- 8:51little bit off the athlete
- 8:52to make them feel special?
- 8:54Sure.
- 8:56Yeah, I think that's important.
- 8:57I mean, listen,
- 8:58I think the fact that you have Will,
- 9:00you know,
- 9:01who's obviously a former very
- 9:04high level athlete,
- 9:05still a very high level athlete, right?
- 9:07I mean,
- 9:07just won the games not too long ago
- 9:10in the thirty five or
- 9:11thirty nine division.
- 9:13um but I think that helps
- 9:15you know and and having him
- 9:16be an og there and
- 9:17obviously saxon as well and
- 9:19I I think that you know
- 9:20there are some things that
- 9:21they understand coming from
- 9:23an athlete perspective I
- 9:25think that you know kind of
- 9:26kind of sweetens the pot a
- 9:27little bit and and make
- 9:29things a little bit more
- 9:30enjoyable um but listen
- 9:33it's not to say that in the
- 9:34past you know obviously
- 9:36I mean,
- 9:36I remember the – I don't remember
- 9:39exactly which game and which sponsor.
- 9:41I think it was probably Noble.
- 9:42But I remember some of the
- 9:43bells and whistles with
- 9:44those locker rooms and the big things.
- 9:46So I definitely think that
- 9:50we've seen that in the past,
- 9:51but I certainly think that
- 9:53they did a really nice job
- 9:55of making the athletes feel
- 9:56special and feel heard.
- 9:59And I think that that goes a long way.
- 10:03um when when the athletes
- 10:04feel that type of respect
- 10:06and and that's great you
- 10:08know um I but again I I
- 10:11want to be careful you know
- 10:12that we don't pit kind of
- 10:14crossfit versus wfb because
- 10:16I don't think it's that way
- 10:17and I think we've seen in
- 10:18the past there have been a lot of um
- 10:21instances, you know, in,
- 10:23in CrossFit at the games
- 10:24and things like that,
- 10:25where that's also been the case.
- 10:27We've also seen it where it
- 10:28hasn't been the case.
- 10:29So, you know, I think it,
- 10:31but I think it's important that it's,
- 10:32you know,
- 10:32we don't kind of pin the two
- 10:34against each other because
- 10:35I feel like right now that's,
- 10:38That's the thing that I'm
- 10:40having the most trouble
- 10:41with in the community right
- 10:43now is I just kind of feel
- 10:44like people want to pin the
- 10:46two against each other.
- 10:47And I'm hopeful that we can open it up and,
- 10:52you know,
- 10:52everyone can work together to try to,
- 10:56you know, push the CrossFit, the sport,
- 10:59the methodology, you know, WFP.
- 11:01I mean,
- 11:02I'd like to see it all be
- 11:02successful because it
- 11:03creates opportunities.
- 11:05It creates opportunities for athletes,
- 11:07for coaches.
- 11:09Um, and,
- 11:09and that's not a bad thing when
- 11:11there are opportunities.
- 11:12So, you know, that's, that's,
- 11:13that's my biggest takeaway, you know, um,
- 11:17from the last several
- 11:18months is just trying to, uh, you know,
- 11:20hope, hoping that, that,
- 11:22that all these things can
- 11:23kind of work together.
- 11:25So I'm going to take a
- 11:26slightly different approach.
- 11:27Yeah.
- 11:27And I don't,
- 11:28and I'm not in one camp or the other.
- 11:29I, I like them both.
- 11:31Yep.
- 11:32Um, but I, I,
- 11:34I think they should be pitted
- 11:35against each other because
- 11:36that's how things get better.
- 11:39It's when you have competition.
- 11:41Just like a good athlete
- 11:43wants to go up against
- 11:44another great athlete to
- 11:46see where they stand,
- 11:48to see how they can improve,
- 11:49to see where they can get better.
- 11:51If you don't have true competition,
- 11:53which CrossFit has not had
- 11:55for twenty years,
- 11:57and left to its own devices
- 11:59without that competition,
- 12:00has not made significant
- 12:02improvements that have been
- 12:03clamored for for years.
- 12:06Sure.
- 12:06I agree with that.
- 12:07But I also think if you look
- 12:08in the history of sports
- 12:10with like two different leagues,
- 12:11say like AFL, NFL, ABA, NBA,
- 12:15when they actually merged
- 12:17and kind of came together eventually,
- 12:19that's when things exploded.
- 12:20Right.
- 12:21So I think that there I
- 12:23think you what you say has merit.
- 12:25But I also think that ultimately, you know,
- 12:28my my fear is is is that, you know, that
- 12:32that ultimately they,
- 12:33they break each other down, you know?
- 12:35So,
- 12:36so my hope is that that's not the case
- 12:38and that, and that, you know, what,
- 12:41what the WFP is, what CrossFit is,
- 12:44they can,
- 12:44they can exist symbiotically in
- 12:47my opinion, but you know,
- 12:48I could be pie in the sky, right?
- 12:50Like I could have that,
- 12:52that view could be
- 12:52completely pie in the sky.
- 12:54So.
- 12:55I don't disagree with the
- 12:56inevitability of coming together.
- 12:58Right.
- 12:59But I think that,
- 13:01Someone had to tell CrossFit
- 13:03to take a shit or get off the pot.
- 13:04Right.
- 13:05I understand what you're saying.
- 13:07Because we have been... I've
- 13:08been in this media space
- 13:09for five and a half years.
- 13:10Yeah.
- 13:10The entire time it's been,
- 13:12can't we do better?
- 13:13Can't we do better?
- 13:15Right.
- 13:15And I think what's...
- 13:17frustrating to me as I look
- 13:18at a crossfit game season
- 13:19this year that is harder to
- 13:21explain than it's ever been
- 13:22yeah and then you have the
- 13:23wfp which is coming in with
- 13:25a very streamlined but if
- 13:27you are not a golf fan or a
- 13:29tennis fan or a formula one
- 13:31fan you don't really see
- 13:33the whole picture yet
- 13:34right right and I am a fan
- 13:36of all those so I think I
- 13:37understand it right better
- 13:39in the vision um but when I
- 13:41was watching your show the
- 13:42other day you know with
- 13:43jamie and and uh carolyn
- 13:46obviously and I jamie was
- 13:47kind of losing it a little bit and I was
- 13:50I was on your side there saying, no,
- 13:53as far as the challengers, as far as this,
- 13:55as far as that,
- 13:57it makes sense in these other sports.
- 13:58It works.
- 13:59And so if we just give it a
- 14:01little bit of time,
- 14:03I think that that will work.
- 14:08But I can certainly
- 14:10understand why people would be confused.
- 14:15But, you know,
- 14:17I was thinking of it in the
- 14:18sense of like Q School for the PGA Tour,
- 14:21right?
- 14:22Like, yeah, it's really hard to qualify.
- 14:26It's really hard to go from
- 14:27being a qualifier to the PGA Tour.
- 14:29Some people do it seven times, eight times,
- 14:32ten times.
- 14:32That means like seven years, eight years,
- 14:35nine years,
- 14:35ten years before they finally get there.
- 14:37Yeah, it's really, really, really hard.
- 14:40And that's, you know, I kind of feel like,
- 14:42yeah, that's the way it should be.
- 14:43It should be really,
- 14:44really difficult to be, you know,
- 14:45one of the top twenty.
- 14:46Now, of course,
- 14:48the top twenty this year were chosen.
- 14:50And in next year,
- 14:52it's going to be different
- 14:53because that really muddies the water.
- 14:55yeah chosen twenty has
- 14:57muddied the water a hundred
- 14:58percent but but you know
- 14:59what you got to give it a
- 15:00place to start there has to
- 15:02be a place to start and
- 15:03then you know over the next
- 15:05few years you you're going
- 15:06to see like yeah okay those
- 15:08twenty have have deserved
- 15:10to be there and now okay to get
- 15:14You know,
- 15:14now to get there is going to be
- 15:17really challenging and it's
- 15:18and it's going to be no pun intended.
- 15:20Right.
- 15:20With the challenger division.
- 15:21But it's going to be very challenging.
- 15:23And I think but I think
- 15:24it'll create great stories.
- 15:27You know, obviously,
- 15:28one of the things that we
- 15:29can talk about today is, you know,
- 15:30how do we make things better?
- 15:32y'all coming off this
- 15:33weekend how do we make
- 15:34things better and all that
- 15:35stuff but yeah I I you know
- 15:37if you want to start at the
- 15:38beginning and go through
- 15:40that'd be great you know
- 15:41we've kind of taken a
- 15:42little bit of a tangential
- 15:43turn with the crossfit
- 15:44versus wfp which I don't
- 15:46want to spend the whole
- 15:47time this one thing and
- 15:49then we'll go back to the
- 15:50beginning and that is it
- 15:51was just announced today I
- 15:53think a rule change that
- 15:54they came up with this week
- 15:56that is the highest
- 15:57finishing challenger yeah
- 15:59automatic bid to the next tour stop yeah
- 16:02So Colton Mertens and FISA
- 16:04got an automatic bid to tour stop too.
- 16:05Yeah.
- 16:06They were the highest
- 16:07finishing challenger in this.
- 16:09And I like that rule.
- 16:11I saw that.
- 16:11I like it as well.
- 16:12Yeah.
- 16:13As long as it's still earned.
- 16:15I just kind of I mean I just
- 16:17kind of laugh because I
- 16:18mean I already saw a couple
- 16:19of responses like oh we're
- 16:20just making up rules as we
- 16:22go and I meanwhile the last
- 16:23chance qualifier just came
- 16:25out yesterday so it's like
- 16:27I was laughing because it's
- 16:28like no matter where you
- 16:29look in this space right
- 16:30now it just seems like
- 16:31things are just kind of
- 16:32made up and happening as we
- 16:34go which is I have left
- 16:35just for the last item
- 16:37yeah which is just funny
- 16:39because it's it's just the
- 16:40way things have been for so
- 16:41long so it's not surprising
- 16:43that all of a sudden you
- 16:44know there's a new rule
- 16:45there but yeah I'm I'm fine
- 16:47with it I mean obviously
- 16:48like let's you know colton
- 16:50and fee are obviously two
- 16:52of the top right now
- 16:53there's no doubt they're
- 16:54having great seasons they
- 16:56are all not just wfp
- 16:57correct um so yeah well
- 17:00earned for sure so
- 17:03From your perspective,
- 17:04let's go back to the beginning.
- 17:05What was your experience like?
- 17:07Let's start with what were
- 17:09all the good things you saw
- 17:11and what was your
- 17:12experience like this weekend?
- 17:14Sure.
- 17:15Well, I think, you know,
- 17:17first and foremost,
- 17:18I was very impressed with the venue,
- 17:20super impressed with the setup.
- 17:23The warm up space was
- 17:24absolutely incredible.
- 17:25You know,
- 17:27the the areas that they had for
- 17:30the for the pros, you know,
- 17:32for the athletes in general
- 17:35were very impressive.
- 17:37I thought that the
- 17:38communication was excellent
- 17:41as far as the briefings and
- 17:43as far as understanding
- 17:46when and where we needed to be.
- 17:47I thought all those things
- 17:48were done extremely well,
- 17:50extremely professionally.
- 17:52I heard it said that because
- 17:53they gave the workouts out ahead of time,
- 17:56it actually made the
- 17:57briefings easier because
- 17:58people had time to digest
- 18:00it and kind of figure it
- 18:01out on their own.
- 18:02And so it made the briefing
- 18:03go much quicker.
- 18:05Yeah.
- 18:05I think also they did that
- 18:07video of kind of the flows
- 18:08of the workouts, you know, um, where,
- 18:11where they,
- 18:12they had that kind of AI thing that was,
- 18:13that was doing it, the arrow.
- 18:15Um, and, um,
- 18:18But yeah, I thought that was great.
- 18:19I also thought that they
- 18:21were listening to feedback
- 18:22in the briefings.
- 18:24And in some of the briefings,
- 18:26they changed a couple of
- 18:28the rules or a few of the
- 18:32movement standards per se.
- 18:34One being where you couldn't
- 18:36re-rack the jerk.
- 18:37And I think they realized like, hey,
- 18:41if we want to make this more exciting, we
- 18:44it's better if we let them
- 18:46re-rack it because we
- 18:48ultimately what we were
- 18:48going to do anyway was was
- 18:50you know people were going
- 18:51to jerk the bar re-rack it
- 18:53and then walk it into the
- 18:55rack and and they were just
- 18:57going to take a no rep for
- 18:59the first couple reps until
- 19:00they got to the number that
- 19:02they wanted to hit and then
- 19:03would drop it you know what
- 19:04I mean so it it ultimately
- 19:06made made more sense that
- 19:07way and I think they they
- 19:08did a good job of of listening and and um
- 19:12Yeah, I was very impressed overall.
- 19:16You know,
- 19:16that's not to say obviously
- 19:17things were perfect, but without question,
- 19:21you know, I thought for a first event,
- 19:24I thought they did a very good job.
- 19:26And I think in general,
- 19:28all of us came away feeling, you know,
- 19:30very good about it.
- 19:31the event uh feeling very
- 19:33good about uh the season
- 19:35and and you know I mean if
- 19:37they can repeat this and
- 19:38obviously continue to level
- 19:40up it's it's gonna be um
- 19:42you know it's gonna be great
- 19:44they said over and over
- 19:45again in the behind the
- 19:46scenes and different things
- 19:47that they wanted to hear feedback.
- 19:50Yep.
- 19:50So were there items that you
- 19:52thought needed to get
- 19:53better for tour stop two or next season?
- 19:57Yeah.
- 19:57Your experience this weekend.
- 19:59Yeah, for sure.
- 20:00I mean, I spoke a little bit to,
- 20:02to them already, but I'll, I'll have,
- 20:03I'll have another call or
- 20:06two to go through a few more things,
- 20:08but yeah,
- 20:10I think ultimately,
- 20:11I thought the GHD standard
- 20:14was really shitty.
- 20:19I'm not a fan of GHD sit-ups
- 20:21in competition in general.
- 20:23I think they're awful in competition.
- 20:26That's just me.
- 20:26It's my personal opinion.
- 20:27They're not fun to watch.
- 20:29People try to skirt the rules.
- 20:31It's very hard to watch.
- 20:35uphold standards I mean I
- 20:36think we even saw it at
- 20:37mayhem too you know and
- 20:39then obviously in the in
- 20:40the uh semi-finals online
- 20:42semi-finals a bunch of
- 20:43people got penalized
- 20:44because they're trying to
- 20:45skirt the rules you know
- 20:46where's your hips and you
- 20:48know is in the middle is it
- 20:50depending on how somebody's
- 20:51body is made up it changes
- 20:53where they can be etc
- 20:57The only standard at WFP was
- 21:00touch the pad in front.
- 21:01Correct.
- 21:02Anything goes.
- 21:03Anything went.
- 21:04Right.
- 21:04And I've said,
- 21:05and Jamie and I have this
- 21:06fight all the time.
- 21:07I'd rather have no standard
- 21:09than a standard that's not upheld.
- 21:12Yes.
- 21:12At least it's a fair playing field.
- 21:14Correct.
- 21:14So that I completely understand.
- 21:16And it takes the
- 21:17subjectivity out of it for the judges,
- 21:19which I know is a lot easier.
- 21:21The problem is, is then the workout,
- 21:24the way it's written and intended,
- 21:26you're not getting that stimulus at all,
- 21:28right?
- 21:28It just becomes a who's the
- 21:30fastest at cheating GHDs ultimately.
- 21:34And that's not the intention
- 21:37of the workout.
- 21:38Like that workout actually
- 21:39was pretty nasty.
- 21:40I hated that so much.
- 21:41What's that?
- 21:42Carolyn hated that so much.
- 21:43Oh, it was terrible.
- 21:44And I saw her videos.
- 21:45Great.
- 21:46But yeah, we hated it.
- 21:48And Alex doesn't train them that way.
- 21:50So you had like, but honestly,
- 21:52two hours before the event, Alex,
- 21:55we're trying to learn that
- 21:56way because the truth of the matter is,
- 21:58if you don't, you're going to get smoked.
- 22:00Because you see people doing
- 22:02them next to you and you're like,
- 22:03holy shit, that's just so fast.
- 22:05You can't compete doing them
- 22:07the way that they're supposed to be done,
- 22:09the way you learn them in a level one.
- 22:11So my thing is,
- 22:13if we're not going to do
- 22:14them the way that we're
- 22:16taught and the way that they're intended,
- 22:19then let's not do them at all.
- 22:20Um, and, and, you know, so,
- 22:22so ultimately that was one of the things,
- 22:24um, you know,
- 22:26I think obviously some of
- 22:27the lighting stuff I enjoyed,
- 22:29but then we need to make
- 22:30sure timing wise that we're not, you know,
- 22:33blacking out when people
- 22:34are still lifting.
- 22:35I mean, but those are all things that like,
- 22:38you know, listen, it's a, it's a first go,
- 22:39you know,
- 22:40like you're going to have some
- 22:41growing pains without question.
- 22:42You're going to have some growing pains.
- 22:44think I love I love the red
- 22:46light at the end of the
- 22:47yeah at the time but in a
- 22:49lifting event and you're
- 22:50allowed to go beyond the
- 22:51time as long as you're off
- 22:52the rack that you have to
- 22:54make an exception for that
- 22:56hundred percent yes hundred
- 22:57percent and I don't think
- 22:59that you know obviously
- 22:59they missed that but um I
- 23:02think more important than anything
- 23:04and something that I think
- 23:08they will do this because I
- 23:10think ultimately it lends
- 23:12itself well to being
- 23:17televised or kind of
- 23:19creating a reality series or something.
- 23:22I mean, we've talked about it before.
- 23:24I've always been a proponent of
- 23:26of trying to create you know
- 23:28a drive to survive feel or
- 23:31a you know a full full
- 23:33swing right I think it's
- 23:34what it's called and you
- 23:35know um I I think that we
- 23:39can't just treat these as
- 23:42fitness events like the
- 23:43same old thing that we've
- 23:45always done where you you
- 23:46stream it and that's all
- 23:48you get right I think ultimately you know
- 23:52we're going to need to go an
- 23:54extra mile and that means
- 23:56you know how cool would it
- 23:57have been to have the
- 23:59behind the scenes of going
- 24:01into the final event where
- 24:02you've got the men's and
- 24:03the women's field really up
- 24:05for grabs and you mic up
- 24:08those athletes and coaches
- 24:09and you get all that you
- 24:12know behind the scenes look
- 24:14of warm-ups and strategy
- 24:16talk and everything leading
- 24:19into that final event and
- 24:20then kind of you know
- 24:22having us and stans mic'd
- 24:24up during the event and
- 24:25then after to kind of you
- 24:27know bring that drama to
- 24:28everybody to me that's the
- 24:30type of stuff that they're
- 24:31going to need to do in the future
- 24:32We need to see those things.
- 24:35This needs to be a story
- 24:38that people want to watch
- 24:40that creates drama.
- 24:42Because if it's just another fitness event,
- 24:45to me,
- 24:46I just don't know if that's going
- 24:47to attract more than just the niche.
- 24:52And we need this to attract the masses.
- 24:55And I think it can, because again,
- 24:57I always say these are
- 24:58superhumans doing superhuman things.
- 25:01And people love to watch that.
- 25:03It's inspiring.
- 25:04And ultimately,
- 25:06if you can create those stories,
- 25:09I think that that's going
- 25:10to give you a leg up on everything else.
- 25:13So I'm hoping that that's
- 25:15something that's created in the future.
- 25:17Well, I'm a massive full swing fan.
- 25:19I mean,
- 25:21I watched more masters this year
- 25:22than I have because of that,
- 25:25but they had a great final
- 25:27event that ending on those lunges,
- 25:30double overhead lunges made
- 25:32for great drama.
- 25:34But if you added mics to the
- 25:37people that risked it and
- 25:38didn't make it and the
- 25:40amount of drama that would
- 25:41be added to that would be insane.
- 25:44Right.
- 25:45Correct.
- 25:46And I mean, just the,
- 25:48just thinking about the warmups prior to,
- 25:50you know,
- 25:51and the things that Alex and I
- 25:52are talking about and the, you know,
- 25:53you can see the tension.
- 25:55And I mean,
- 25:55obviously she had a lead going
- 25:57into the final month,
- 25:58but it wasn't a comfortable lead, right?
- 26:00I mean,
- 26:00she ended up winning by fifty points,
- 26:01but that doesn't tell the
- 26:03true story of the weekend.
- 26:04I mean, it was up for grabs, right?
- 26:06Like she had to beat Amy.
- 26:08She had, you know, Laura was in,
- 26:10was stalking.
- 26:11And obviously when Laura
- 26:12Horvath is stalking, I mean, you know,
- 26:14you, you think, oh shit,
- 26:15she's got a shot.
- 26:16Right.
- 26:17Uh,
- 26:17and there were still even other people
- 26:19that,
- 26:19that could have gotten in the mix if
- 26:21Laura,
- 26:21something that happened like
- 26:22what happened to jeff had
- 26:23happened to alex right if
- 26:24she drops the dumbbell and
- 26:26and and all of a sudden you
- 26:28know she comes in fifteenth
- 26:29sixteenth seventeenth she
- 26:31she wouldn't have won um so
- 26:33I think people would be
- 26:34interested in that I think
- 26:35people would be interested
- 26:36in in you know kind of what
- 26:37we were talking about prior
- 26:39to and what the other
- 26:40athletes and their coaches
- 26:41are talking about I think
- 26:42people love that stuff they
- 26:44love the insight I also
- 26:45think it helps them and
- 26:47gives them insight
- 26:48into their training, into, you know,
- 26:51especially for athletes,
- 26:52young athletes that are
- 26:53just getting into competing
- 26:55and coaches who are trying to, you know,
- 26:57kind of level up and get to
- 26:59the level of coaching elite athletes.
- 27:00I'm sure they'd be
- 27:01interested in kind of
- 27:02seeing how we're prepping
- 27:03the athletes or talking, you know,
- 27:06all that stuff, you know, the mental side,
- 27:09the physical side, the emotional side,
- 27:11because all of it's a part of it.
- 27:13And to me,
- 27:14it just makes things so much
- 27:16more exciting.
- 27:17So let me ask you this question then.
- 27:19Sure.
- 27:19And someone who is well
- 27:21ingrained in the space.
- 27:22Yeah.
- 27:23Do you think we have enough
- 27:24athletes that would be
- 27:25willing to be miked up in
- 27:27those situations?
- 27:29And because yeah,
- 27:32if you're not in that final event, you,
- 27:35you don't look good.
- 27:37Yeah.
- 27:38And that's what makes the full swing.
- 27:39Like so good is yeah.
- 27:42There are golfers that shit
- 27:43the bed and they still are
- 27:45willing to go on camera and
- 27:47talk about shitting the bed.
- 27:48Scott, if people, if,
- 27:50if our athletes are not
- 27:51willing to do that, then they, I mean,
- 27:55this is going to be harsh.
- 27:56Then, then they shouldn't,
- 27:58we shouldn't allow them to
- 27:59compete in this.
- 28:00Here's the deal.
- 28:01We aren't the NFL.
- 28:02We aren't the NBA.
- 28:04We aren't major league baseball.
- 28:05There's no guarantee this
- 28:06sports around in the next two years,
- 28:08three years, four years.
- 28:09like if they don't have that
- 28:10understanding that like
- 28:12they want to be athletes
- 28:13and make money if you don't
- 28:15have the understanding that
- 28:16the way to do that is to
- 28:18build a bigger following
- 28:20with more spectators and
- 28:21more money and all those
- 28:22things if you don't do that
- 28:24stuff then you don't you
- 28:25don't deserve to compete in
- 28:26my opinion like
- 28:28Everyone should be willing
- 28:29to bend over backwards to
- 28:31do whatever we have to do
- 28:32to drive the sport.
- 28:34And if people don't understand that,
- 28:36then they need to get the
- 28:37hell out of the way and get
- 28:40and allow people that do
- 28:41understand that because
- 28:43there's not going to be a
- 28:44sport for us to do.
- 28:45You know what I mean?
- 28:46Like that's the bottom line.
- 28:48Like we're nowhere near saying, Oh no,
- 28:51don't right now.
- 28:52No, please don't.
- 28:54No, that's, that's not the way it is.
- 28:55You know, you need to,
- 28:57you need to understand that
- 28:58like the media side of things right now.
- 29:00And we're in the twenty
- 29:01first century like that.
- 29:03That's the way this thing takes off.
- 29:05Bottom line.
- 29:08I can't tell you how many
- 29:09people I have had trouble
- 29:10getting on this show
- 29:12because we do it live.
- 29:14Yeah.
- 29:15But I, okay.
- 29:16That's different in the
- 29:18sense of you're asking
- 29:19questions and they're responding.
- 29:21Like this is, this is different.
- 29:23Like this is different in the sense of,
- 29:25you know, people are just,
- 29:28you're just living,
- 29:28you're just being candid, right?
- 29:30Like,
- 29:30it's not like you're asking a
- 29:32question and they're being
- 29:33put on the spot or, you know,
- 29:34I think people sometimes
- 29:35aren't great on the mic, you know,
- 29:37but I mean.
- 29:38It's touching the people
- 29:39that are rooting for you.
- 29:40Like it's a way to have a touch.
- 29:42It has to.
- 29:43And that builds your brand,
- 29:46which helps build the sport.
- 29:49I don't think enough of the
- 29:50athletes see the long-term picture.
- 29:53And if it's not micing up
- 29:54the athlete per se,
- 29:56it's having the cameras back there.
- 29:57You can mic up the coaches.
- 29:58You could put microphones on the floor.
- 30:00There's ways to do it.
- 30:02They do it, right?
- 30:03I mean, there's ways to figure it out.
- 30:05There's no question that we can do it.
- 30:07And I would be exploring all
- 30:09of those options, you know,
- 30:11if I was in charge of media for WFP.
- 30:14Like to me,
- 30:17we've got to create the stories.
- 30:19I'm in full agreement with you.
- 30:20Okay.
- 30:21I think it needs to be done.
- 30:22Yes.
- 30:23I just, that's the one hurdle I see.
- 30:25Yeah.
- 30:26Well, don't allow it to be a hurdle.
- 30:30That's it.
- 30:31Have people sign shit.
- 30:33Listen,
- 30:34when we go to Rogue and they want
- 30:35to use everybody's name, image,
- 30:37and likeness, you sign a contract.
- 30:41They've been using Alex's name, image,
- 30:43and likeness on that
- 30:44commercial on YouTube that
- 30:45I know everybody's seen
- 30:46where she's doing a deadlift.
- 30:48I've seen it five thousand times.
- 30:49She doesn't make a dime from that.
- 30:51OK,
- 30:52but she signed on the dotted line that
- 30:54says they can use it.
- 30:56So they use it like that's the way it is.
- 30:59That's what I would do.
- 30:59I'd be like, listen,
- 31:00we're we're creating a
- 31:03reality series to package
- 31:05to take to Netflix or to
- 31:06take to Amazon Prime or to
- 31:07take to Red Bull TV.
- 31:09And, you know,
- 31:10we're going to be doing this.
- 31:11We're going to be doing this.
- 31:12We're going to be doing this.
- 31:13Please sign.
- 31:14And if you don't want to sign,
- 31:15you won't compete like
- 31:16that's the way it is.
- 31:18I mean, that's the bottom line.
- 31:21People have to understand
- 31:22that we are in no position
- 31:24to make demands or to be
- 31:29cavalier about helping the
- 31:33media get what they need to get.
- 31:36Do you think that the people
- 31:39that you've talked to at
- 31:40WFP are inclined to do
- 31:41something like this?
- 31:42I think so.
- 31:43I think they're...
- 31:44I think they're inclined to
- 31:45do whatever it takes to be successful,
- 31:51obviously within reason,
- 31:53but I believe that they understand that,
- 31:58yes,
- 31:59that's something that would be a good
- 32:01move and something that ultimately
- 32:03when you look at the niche
- 32:05sports that have blown up, you know,
- 32:08from UFC to, I mean,
- 32:10I'm not going to say F
- 32:11one's a niche sport per se.
- 32:13I mean, obviously it was,
- 32:14it was big prior to,
- 32:15but compared to where it is
- 32:16now after drive to survive, I mean,
- 32:18just the proof is in the pudding,
- 32:20the tour de France, same thing, you know,
- 32:22with that reality show.
- 32:24And there's so many cases now that,
- 32:26you know, so many instances where,
- 32:28uh and examples that we see
- 32:30of of sports that have gone
- 32:33to the next level in
- 32:34popularity because of a
- 32:36reality series yeah I think
- 32:39the golden ticket is if you
- 32:40can get on netflix as a
- 32:41niche sport you got a shot
- 32:43yep definitely for sure any
- 32:47any of the big streaming
- 32:48services though it's a
- 32:49netflix or amazon prime you
- 32:51know any of those are
- 32:52pretty good but obviously
- 32:53netflix is gold standard
- 32:55Yeah.
- 32:55And they were the first to do it.
- 32:56I mean,
- 32:56they're the ones that have full
- 32:57swing and drive to survive and the,
- 33:00the tour de France one and like,
- 33:02they're just killing it and
- 33:03they're sprint.
- 33:05I love that one.
- 33:06The one with the sprinters, the athletes,
- 33:08like the Olympic sprinters, no allows.
- 33:11Oh, it's so good.
- 33:13It's great.
- 33:14When I finished full swing,
- 33:15I'll jump into that one.
- 33:16It's really good.
- 33:17Yep.
- 33:17Um, so you had a, you had a great weekend.
- 33:20Alex ends up winning the first tour stop.
- 33:24Yeah.
- 33:25You and I've, gosh,
- 33:26we've been talking for five years now.
- 33:28Yeah.
- 33:29Back and forth.
- 33:31You have told me over and
- 33:32over again that she has all the tools.
- 33:34Yeah.
- 33:35Just putting them together.
- 33:36Yeah.
- 33:37This is probably her biggest
- 33:38win with the field she went up against.
- 33:41Oh, a hundred percent.
- 33:41It's the best field in the sport right now,
- 33:43minus Tia.
- 33:45And to win by fifty?
- 33:48Yeah.
- 33:49Right.
- 33:51Do you see it coming together?
- 33:53Yes.
- 33:54not where we're going to be
- 33:56but yes uh still things
- 34:00that um I would say you
- 34:04know I've always talked
- 34:04about creating a
- 34:06bulletproof athlete right
- 34:08where programming doesn't
- 34:09matter uh and I and I think
- 34:12we're getting closer to
- 34:13that we're not there yet um
- 34:16but you can see you know
- 34:20Historically, that first event,
- 34:24which had two of her
- 34:25quote-unquote weaknesses,
- 34:27running and snatching in it,
- 34:30and her ability to stay in
- 34:33the mix and finish sixth.
- 34:38That was a workout, I would say,
- 34:41historically,
- 34:42that she finishes probably
- 34:43somewhere in the middle of the pack,
- 34:46probably right around
- 34:47fifteenth to twentieth.
- 34:50And now being able to finish
- 34:51there is huge.
- 34:53Her worst finish of the
- 34:54weekend was that GHD workout.
- 34:57And that simply was because
- 34:58of the GHD standard.
- 35:00She's just not super fast at
- 35:03that standard.
- 35:04But that's a handstand walk
- 35:07event that in the past, again,
- 35:09would be a huge challenge for her.
- 35:10And that's getting much better.
- 35:13So the things that we knew
- 35:16we needed to get better at,
- 35:18the things that we've been prioritizing,
- 35:20it's really nice to see
- 35:23those things paying off,
- 35:25to see those things
- 35:26improving and to see the progression.
- 35:28But more than anything,
- 35:31I would say just our
- 35:33composure in that final
- 35:36event where we knew exactly
- 35:40what we needed to do
- 35:42And there was no panic.
- 35:45there was absolutely no drama from her.
- 35:48Like she was steady as a rock.
- 35:51She finished third in the event.
- 35:53She was in control the entire time.
- 35:56You know,
- 35:57the overhead walking lunges is
- 35:58not her favorite movement,
- 35:59but we've gotten it to the
- 36:01stage where she feels confident.
- 36:03You know,
- 36:03she felt confident in those
- 36:04twenty five foot sections.
- 36:06She did exactly what she did in practice,
- 36:09you know, and it was it was just
- 36:13And afterwards, I was like, you know,
- 36:15you made it like I wasn't losing my mind,
- 36:17you know, in the final event,
- 36:18like normally I'm losing my mind.
- 36:19I wasn't losing my mind.
- 36:20You made it very stressless
- 36:22for me in that final event.
- 36:24I mean,
- 36:24I watched her the whole time and
- 36:26she just she just was steady Betty,
- 36:28you know,
- 36:28she finished third in the event
- 36:30and she didn't need to try to win,
- 36:32but she knew exactly where
- 36:33she was looking around.
- 36:34There's Amy, there's Laura.
- 36:36I know where I need to be.
- 36:37let me just finish and not
- 36:39create any drama here.
- 36:40And it was,
- 36:41it was really beautiful to watch,
- 36:43to be honest with you.
- 36:45And I think things are
- 36:48moving in a direction that
- 36:51is kind of what I was
- 36:54hoping for and expected a few years ago.
- 36:58And it,
- 36:59to see it happening is just awesome.
- 37:02Lynn says,
- 37:02I didn't hear Cutler scream once.
- 37:05I screamed once.
- 37:06I screamed in the first
- 37:07event when she came in and
- 37:09she passed Laura and Emma on the run.
- 37:14I was losing my mind up
- 37:15there a little bit just
- 37:16because of the fact that we
- 37:19just put so much time into running.
- 37:22We've been working so hard on it.
- 37:25And the last few months,
- 37:28I feel like we've really
- 37:29dialed in on a program and
- 37:32stuff that we really like.
- 37:33And
- 37:35it's paying off which is
- 37:36awesome so now we get into
- 37:39the story lines of like now
- 37:40you have a thousand points
- 37:42right is a thousand or five
- 37:43hundred five hundred okay
- 37:44five points and you're
- 37:46moving on to tour stop two
- 37:48yeah it would take an epic
- 37:50collapse for her not to
- 37:52qualify for copenhagen
- 37:54Yeah,
- 37:56she's going to qualify for Copenhagen.
- 38:00I mean, at this point in time,
- 38:01our goal is to win.
- 38:04So he's going to win the whole thing,
- 38:08which I'm sure there are
- 38:09several people who have that same goal.
- 38:12But we've put ourselves in
- 38:13the best position of anyone
- 38:15at this point to win.
- 38:18And now I think the key is
- 38:20just doing all the things
- 38:21that we need to do to
- 38:23manage the season to put us
- 38:26in the best position to win.
- 38:29That's to say that our goal
- 38:30is to win the WFP and our
- 38:33goal is to win the CrossFit Games.
- 38:35So it's both.
- 38:36So those kind of scratch
- 38:37each other's back because
- 38:38the beautiful thing is that
- 38:39your preparation for the
- 38:42Games is the same as our
- 38:44preparation for WFP.
- 38:45I mean,
- 38:47we're preparing the same way with
- 38:50the intention and the hope
- 38:52and the goal of winning.
- 38:56So this kind of leads to my,
- 38:57to my next question.
- 38:58And it's a question by the barbell spin.
- 39:00Uh,
- 39:00how many times should athletes be
- 39:02expected to compete in a calendar?
- 39:03That's a great question.
- 39:05And obviously,
- 39:06that's one of the reasons
- 39:07why we did not do online semis.
- 39:11That was the big reason why
- 39:12we didn't do online semis
- 39:14was looking at the season and saying,
- 39:17okay,
- 39:17how can we space the season in a way
- 39:22that puts her in the best
- 39:23position to succeed and stay healthy?
- 39:27um and the one weekend or
- 39:29back-to-back weekend that
- 39:31we looked at was online
- 39:32semis into wfp one and what
- 39:37we said was we made an
- 39:39agreement uh that we were
- 39:42going to try to prioritize
- 39:45in-person events
- 39:47And that would be where we
- 39:49are able to display her fitness.
- 39:52Online, just to us,
- 39:55it leaves too much for interpretation.
- 40:01And we've seen that happen
- 40:02now with several women who
- 40:03obviously have lost their
- 40:05qualifying positions.
- 40:07And I guarantee that those women,
- 40:08if it was in person,
- 40:09would not have lost those
- 40:10qualifying positions.
- 40:13and and so ultimately you
- 40:15know I I know there are
- 40:16some that agree with us and
- 40:17some that won't and some
- 40:18that will criticize us and
- 40:19some that won't um but we
- 40:22felt very comfortable um
- 40:24saying okay we're going to
- 40:26bypass online sammies we're
- 40:27going to focus on wfp and
- 40:31on norcal and those are
- 40:34the best opportunities for
- 40:35us to achieve our goals, which is one,
- 40:38to win the WFP.
- 40:40So we put ourselves in a
- 40:41really good position
- 40:41winning and then go to
- 40:43NorCal and qualify out of
- 40:44NorCal to get to the CrossFit Games.
- 40:48I think with Spin's question
- 40:49specifically is I'm not
- 40:51sure that we know that yet.
- 40:53I think that this season is almost,
- 40:57it's a kind of like a test case, you know,
- 41:00like we're going to find out
- 41:03what's possible.
- 41:04And I think at that point,
- 41:06we'll be able to adjust moving forward.
- 41:09We're lucky in a sense that
- 41:10Alex is twenty three.
- 41:12Right.
- 41:12I mean,
- 41:12I think people forget she's still
- 41:14only twenty three years old.
- 41:15So we're still kind of
- 41:17learning those things.
- 41:18So the way that I looked at the season was,
- 41:20OK, we got WFP a month later.
- 41:23We've got NorCal.
- 41:24NorCal is local, too.
- 41:26So it's it's great for us.
- 41:28Same time zone, very short flight.
- 41:31There's not a ton of issues with travel.
- 41:34Right.
- 41:35then we don't have until the games.
- 41:38So that's a couple of months,
- 41:40which is fantastic.
- 41:43It gets a little bit hairy
- 41:44at the end of August going into,
- 41:48or the games going into Mesa,
- 41:51simply because the games
- 41:53are generally more taxing
- 41:55than any other competition
- 41:56during the year, you know,
- 42:00and usually you know I'll
- 42:01give alex a full month off
- 42:03um so you know will we be
- 42:06compromised a little bit
- 42:07going into mesa possibly
- 42:09but I still plan on giving
- 42:11her you know at least a
- 42:12week or two off after the
- 42:14games you know and then
- 42:15prepping for mesa um and
- 42:18then we don't have anything
- 42:20until rogue so we've got
- 42:22another few months uh and
- 42:24then from rogue there's a
- 42:25good possibility she's just
- 42:26gonna stay in europe
- 42:28for that period of time
- 42:29between Rogue and Copenhagen.
- 42:33Now, again,
- 42:34is this the correct way to do it?
- 42:36I'm not sure.
- 42:38This is what we think right
- 42:40now is the optimal way.
- 42:42So that's in person, right?
- 42:45That's part of the reason
- 42:46why she also didn't compete
- 42:47earlier in the year,
- 42:48to be perfectly honest, right?
- 42:50Like people at Wadapalooza, et cetera.
- 42:51She had a little bit of an injury,
- 42:53but in general,
- 42:54like when we looked at Wadapalooza,
- 42:56it was like...
- 42:57I don't know.
- 42:58It's just, you know,
- 42:59we want to have that time
- 43:00to be able to train and prepare.
- 43:03And, you know, so WFP, you know, NorCal,
- 43:10the games, Mesa, Rogue, Copenhagen.
- 43:14So we're looking at six events.
- 43:16do I think six events in a
- 43:18in a you know seven month
- 43:19span is a lot yeah it
- 43:21definitely is um do I think
- 43:24it's possible absolutely I
- 43:25think it's possible and I also think
- 43:28So we move forward in the
- 43:29future of the sport,
- 43:31especially if we're going
- 43:31to create a season, right?
- 43:36Which I have always been a fan of,
- 43:38whether it was CrossFit putting it on,
- 43:40whether it was WFP.
- 43:41I've always been a fan of
- 43:42moving more towards having
- 43:44a season like the ATP tour,
- 43:46like the PGA tour, you know,
- 43:49that has multiple, you know,
- 43:51tiered events during the
- 43:52year where you can create
- 43:54points and then you, you know,
- 43:55you get that bonus at the end of the year,
- 43:57right?
- 43:57And I, I've always been a fan of like,
- 44:00I love the games obviously,
- 44:01but I'd love for the games
- 44:03to be maybe one of three
- 44:04grand slam events during the year.
- 44:07And, you know, again,
- 44:09I know a lot of people will say blasphemy,
- 44:12but to me, it's, it's part of evolution,
- 44:14you know, and to me,
- 44:15the evolution of the sport, that's not,
- 44:17I don't, I'm not devaluing the games.
- 44:19I think the, I mean, I,
- 44:20Again, I love CrossFit.
- 44:22I owned an affiliate for ten years.
- 44:23I've devoted my life to
- 44:25introducing people to CrossFit.
- 44:28But I think where we are in the sport now,
- 44:31I think that for the
- 44:33athletes to succeed and for
- 44:34this to ultimately become
- 44:36something that's sustainable,
- 44:37we have to have a real
- 44:38season and we have to have
- 44:40an opportunity for people
- 44:42to see their favorite
- 44:43athletes more than once and compete
- 44:48together in the best fields
- 44:50more than once.
- 44:50And we see that in golf and
- 44:52we see that in tennis
- 44:53specifically in grand slam events.
- 44:54And sometimes in the, you know, the, the,
- 44:57you know, the tour championship and,
- 44:59and obviously in golf and some of those,
- 45:02you know,
- 45:02kind of really high level events,
- 45:04Dubai and Miami, et cetera.
- 45:06And I think we can do that in this,
- 45:08you know,
- 45:09is it going to be perfect right away?
- 45:10Absolutely not.
- 45:11Is it going to take some time for sure.
- 45:14But I do think that it's doable.
- 45:17And I think this is the
- 45:18first season we're going to
- 45:19see athletes kind of step
- 45:21out of their comfort zone
- 45:22of doing one or two competitions a year.
- 45:25And I'm interested to see what happens.
- 45:27I do need to apologize.
- 45:28I misspoke.
- 45:30Alex is a pro.
- 45:31She goes to Copenhagen
- 45:32regardless of what happens
- 45:33in the first two events.
- 45:35And I knew that.
- 45:36I don't know why it slipped
- 45:37my mind when I asked that question,
- 45:38but thank you for the reminder.
- 45:42So
- 45:46So you and Alex sit down,
- 45:49you come up with this plan.
- 45:51You're really putting all of
- 45:52your game season eggs in one basket.
- 45:55Yeah, but with two openings.
- 45:58So what?
- 45:58Isn't that the way it's always been?
- 46:02Think about regionals.
- 46:03Think about semis the last several years.
- 46:06You get one freaking shot and then,
- 46:08you know,
- 46:08they throw the last chance qualifier.
- 46:10But here's a little bigger,
- 46:13five spots or ten spots or
- 46:16not back in the day at three.
- 46:17You had three spots.
- 46:19I mean, I'm an OG, man.
- 46:20I was around where you had three spots,
- 46:22you know, and you went to regionals,
- 46:23northeast regionals, you know,
- 46:25my question.
- 46:27Yeah.
- 46:29My question is,
- 46:30you were that confident in
- 46:32your ability that two spots is fine?
- 46:34A hundred percent.
- 46:35Okay.
- 46:38Without question.
- 46:40If I wasn't, we would have never done it.
- 46:43Yeah.
- 46:45I mean, yes.
- 46:47I'm not a fan of all these chances too.
- 46:49You know,
- 46:50you've seen people have three and
- 46:52four chances to make the games.
- 46:54I think it's absurd.
- 46:55Yeah.
- 46:56You know,
- 46:56I like the I like you get one shot, man.
- 46:59You know, that was that was the deal.
- 47:02Like, that's the way it was last year.
- 47:03Yes, I understand.
- 47:04It was five spots,
- 47:05but still or eight spots or nine spots,
- 47:08whatever the hell it was.
- 47:08But, you know, a couple of years ago,
- 47:10I mean, in the past,
- 47:12you get a couple you get a
- 47:13couple spots and you get one shot.
- 47:15You got to go and you got to
- 47:16do the damn thing.
- 47:18And, you know.
- 47:19Yeah.
- 47:20I mean, I'll be honest with you, Scott.
- 47:22We're not really thinking
- 47:23about anything other than winning.
- 47:25Like we're going there to win.
- 47:26We're not going there to do
- 47:27anything else but win.
- 47:30I wanted you to say that
- 47:31because that is the mindset of a champion,
- 47:34right?
- 47:34Yeah.
- 47:36To you, if it was one spot,
- 47:37you'd still take your shot.
- 47:38A hundred percent.
- 47:39If it would have been one spot,
- 47:40we'd be going and just doing that.
- 47:42Yes.
- 47:43Yeah.
- 47:44Yeah.
- 47:45I love that.
- 47:46And listen, she may not.
- 47:47I mean, anything can happen.
- 47:49You know what I mean?
- 47:50Something could happen.
- 47:51But at the end of the day,
- 47:54Alex and I both feel
- 47:55confident enough to go and
- 47:57earn her spot there.
- 47:58And we feel like...
- 48:02that's the best way for her
- 48:04path to the games that this
- 48:06is what made the most sense.
- 48:08It made the most sense in
- 48:09the way to balance the season,
- 48:11taking all things into consideration,
- 48:14taking WFP into consideration,
- 48:16taking the games into consideration,
- 48:18which she really wants to
- 48:20do both seasons.
- 48:21And if we're going to take
- 48:22both into consideration and give both
- 48:24you know,
- 48:25the amount of respect that both deserved,
- 48:28then, you know,
- 48:30this is the decision we made.
- 48:31And, you know,
- 48:32I stand by it and whether it works or not,
- 48:34we'll see.
- 48:35But regardless of whether it works or not,
- 48:37I'm still going to stand by
- 48:38it because that's what we're doing.
- 48:40you know, we've been friends for a while.
- 48:42And one of the things you've
- 48:43always said about Alex is that like,
- 48:45as soon as her mind gets to
- 48:47where it needs to be and
- 48:48she knows she's the big dog.
- 48:51Yeah.
- 48:51Like that's going to be big.
- 48:52And so the reason I,
- 48:54the other reason I asked
- 48:55that question is you have
- 48:57all the confidence, the world in her.
- 48:58Are we to the point where
- 48:59Alex has all that confidence in herself?
- 49:02I think that I've seen a switch.
- 49:04Yeah.
- 49:05in the last few months I
- 49:08think I've seen a I've seen
- 49:10a change in just belief and
- 49:16approach um I've seen a you
- 49:20know that's not to say
- 49:22obviously that there are I
- 49:23mean I think athletes in
- 49:25general right they always
- 49:26have doubts they always
- 49:28question.
- 49:30They always have fears and
- 49:32that's just human nature.
- 49:34But I think without a doubt,
- 49:38this past weekend in
- 49:40arguably the best field
- 49:43that we've seen together in a long time,
- 49:49it she was pretty fantastic
- 49:52and I feel like she felt at
- 49:55the end like that's that
- 49:57that's exactly where she
- 49:58belonged like you know
- 50:00because I I talked to her
- 50:02afterwards and I said you know you
- 50:04not it's not an easy thing
- 50:06to do to win you know I
- 50:08mean it's really not it's
- 50:10not easy um and and you
- 50:13know she said it just felt
- 50:15right and to me that's a
- 50:18phenomenal answer like how
- 50:19did it feel it felt right
- 50:21and I and I think that it
- 50:23was important because I
- 50:24think it proved that you know um
- 50:27Some of the things that I've
- 50:28been talking about the last few years,
- 50:30people probably think I'm crazy.
- 50:32But I've been doing this a very long time.
- 50:34I wouldn't say those things
- 50:36unless I thought they were true.
- 50:38And I've been saying for a
- 50:39long time that I felt she
- 50:40could be the best.
- 50:41And I'm not saying she's the best.
- 50:43I would absolutely say that
- 50:44right now she is in the
- 50:45discussion with the best in the world.
- 50:51And I think if she can do a
- 50:52little bit more of what she
- 50:53did this past weekend, then...
- 50:55We won't need to say anything.
- 50:57I mean, it'll just be,
- 50:58it'll be what it is.
- 51:00Two years ago, we,
- 51:01we followed her through the
- 51:03season all the way through the games.
- 51:06I saw a different Alex,
- 51:09just posture wise when I
- 51:12was watching WFP.
- 51:13Yeah.
- 51:15Like, and so that's,
- 51:16it's good to hear you say
- 51:17that you think that the
- 51:18switch has flipped.
- 51:19Yeah.
- 51:22There's Jack's say hi, Jack's.
- 51:28What's up?
- 51:29I'm doing a, doing a show.
- 51:30Okay.
- 51:32I like it.
- 51:32It's really nice.
- 51:34Love you, bud.
- 51:38Uh, Barbara spin jumping back in.
- 51:39Can you do both seasons?
- 51:41If WFP adds another comp next year?
- 51:43Yeah, that's a good question.
- 51:45Spin.
- 51:45I don't, I don't know.
- 51:46I can't worry about next year.
- 51:49I know you want to know that, but really,
- 51:51truly, man,
- 51:52I'm thinking right now about NorCal.
- 51:54That's all I'm thinking about.
- 51:55I'm thinking about getting
- 51:56Alex to NorCal and doing
- 51:58what we need to do to
- 51:59qualify for the games and
- 52:02make sure that she performs
- 52:04optimally and does her best there.
- 52:07I'll let the pundits,
- 52:08I'll let you guys argue about that stuff.
- 52:11I don't know.
- 52:12I don't know if it's possible.
- 52:14But I certainly think that
- 52:18we'll deal with that when the time comes.
- 52:21But yeah, I'm not sure.
- 52:23I'm not sure.
- 52:25I'm assuming next year you
- 52:25would sit down with Alex
- 52:26and you would look at the season again,
- 52:28see where everything lines
- 52:29up and have to make the
- 52:32decisions as to what's best for her.
- 52:34Yeah, I think for, you know,
- 52:36you think about the athlete
- 52:38window being as short as it is, right?
- 52:41And I think for us,
- 52:43I think the thing that's
- 52:45the most important for us
- 52:46right now is to be as
- 52:48present as possible.
- 52:50and to look at things from
- 52:52that perspective.
- 52:54Our goals are obviously very lofty,
- 52:58but I think the key right
- 53:01now is we have things that
- 53:04we know we need to continue
- 53:05to get better at.
- 53:07And that's the most
- 53:08important thing to her.
- 53:09The most important thing to
- 53:10her is being the best
- 53:11athlete that she can possibly be.
- 53:14And whatever stage we're
- 53:15able to present that on, you know,
- 53:18I've obviously will feel
- 53:22very grateful for whatever stage that is.
- 53:26But I think, you know, for this season,
- 53:28we have our plan and we
- 53:30know what we're going to do.
- 53:31And so our focus is obviously on that.
- 53:34you know,
- 53:35each day of training and then
- 53:37obviously each event as they come up.
- 53:39And I think to look beyond that, you know,
- 53:43I don't think that that's
- 53:44the way for her to be the
- 53:45most successful.
- 53:48If it's not discussed beforehand,
- 53:50we are setting ourselves up
- 53:51for a big problem next year.
- 53:52But is that your issue as a
- 53:54coach or is that Will and
- 53:56Saxon and to get the input
- 53:59needed to do the right thing?
- 54:01Yeah,
- 54:02I think that that's a question that
- 54:06can be discussed,
- 54:07but we're talking about
- 54:08right now in relation to Alex.
- 54:10So when I'm looking at it
- 54:12from a perspective of Alex,
- 54:14of Alex and, and, you know,
- 54:18what's best for her,
- 54:19what's best for her right
- 54:20now is just focusing on this season.
- 54:23You know, next season, I don't know.
- 54:25I mean, I,
- 54:26I'm not privy to all those discussions,
- 54:28you know, I'm not in,
- 54:30I'm not in the room when
- 54:31CrossFit's discussing their season or,
- 54:33or who they might possibly be selling to,
- 54:36or, you know,
- 54:36what that's going to look like.
- 54:38And I'm not privy to
- 54:39discussion of what WFP wants to do,
- 54:42whether it's
- 54:42adding another event,
- 54:44whether it's mandating that
- 54:46you've got to pick between the two,
- 54:48I don't know.
- 54:51My ideal situation would
- 54:52ultimately be for the two
- 54:55sides to be able to work
- 54:56together and for us to be able to
- 54:59create a season that has
- 55:01these multiple phenomenal events.
- 55:04Again, that might be a pie in the sky view,
- 55:08but that would be my hope.
- 55:11My hope is that we're able
- 55:13to create a season that
- 55:15kind of intertwines all
- 55:18these fantastic events, whether it's WFP,
- 55:20Rogue, Wadapalooza, the games.
- 55:23These are all phenomenal
- 55:25opportunities for athletes, coaches,
- 55:27and fans to be able to,
- 55:30for the athletes to compete,
- 55:31for the coaches to coach,
- 55:32and for the fans to be able
- 55:33to watch these unbelievable athletes.
- 55:35And that for me would be the
- 55:37ideal situation.
- 55:39I don't know, you know, between the two,
- 55:42I have absolutely no idea
- 55:43what the plan is.
- 55:45And I'm sure that we'll learn, you know,
- 55:47I think anything right now
- 55:48is kind of speculation.
- 55:49But ultimately,
- 55:50if we learn that you've got
- 55:51to choose between the two, I think that,
- 55:54you know,
- 55:54then I'll have to really sit
- 55:56down and think about, you know,
- 55:57that discussion.
- 55:58But as of right now,
- 55:59I think right now it's just speculation.
- 56:03So I want to talk about your
- 56:03other athlete that was at the WFP,
- 56:05and that's Mano Anganese.
- 56:06Yeah.
- 56:09The weekend didn't go as
- 56:09well for her as it did for Alex.
- 56:12Yeah.
- 56:13And she has yet to qualify
- 56:15for the games as well.
- 56:19And I have said all along the season,
- 56:20the European athletes
- 56:21really got a screw job with the schedule.
- 56:24Yes.
- 56:25So do you have a plan for
- 56:28Mano going forward?
- 56:29Now, she's a signed athlete, correct?
- 56:32Yes.
- 56:33So she gets tour stop two in Copenhagen.
- 56:36Yes.
- 56:36But is there a way for her
- 56:38to qualify for the games?
- 56:39It looks like it'll be
- 56:41through last chance qualifier.
- 56:42She did try to qualify
- 56:43through mayhem and came in fifth,
- 56:45obviously did extremely well,
- 56:47but did not qualify.
- 56:48And then she tried to do online semis.
- 56:51It was a really challenging
- 56:52situation for her.
- 56:53Nobody will, you know,
- 56:55know this and whatnot, but I mean,
- 56:58with the she she doesn't
- 57:01have so the gym she works
- 57:03out at is not an affiliate
- 57:04so she had to go and do it
- 57:06uh a couple hours away from
- 57:08her home um in belgium and
- 57:11she had to do three
- 57:12workouts the first day and
- 57:14two workouts the second uh
- 57:16so she did it in two days
- 57:17she didn't have any time to
- 57:18do redos because it's not her gym
- 57:21uh and that was just the
- 57:23schedule uh so that you
- 57:25know unfortunately it
- 57:26wasn't an optimal situation
- 57:27and then obviously she she
- 57:28traveled you know the day
- 57:29after to come to uh wfp uh
- 57:32so I think she was pretty
- 57:34beat up from online semis
- 57:35and travel at wfp I
- 57:37actually think that the
- 57:38best day for her was day
- 57:39three you know where she
- 57:40kind of felt like she was
- 57:42getting used to the time
- 57:43change and also just the
- 57:44recovery from from online semis um
- 57:48But yeah, I think, you know,
- 57:51she was obviously, you know, disappointed,
- 57:55I think,
- 57:55in just unfortunately the way the
- 57:59schedule happened.
- 58:00But, you know,
- 58:01we had to do online semis
- 58:02because she wants to
- 58:03qualify for the games.
- 58:04And so that was her chance, you know.
- 58:09Last chance qualifier, I guess.
- 58:11I really still need to look
- 58:13at it deeper and to fully understand it.
- 58:16It looked like there were a
- 58:17lot of parameters there.
- 58:21So I'll take a look at that
- 58:22and see if she qualifies for it.
- 58:28But that would be obviously
- 58:32something that we'll do.
- 58:35is very, you know, I think her priority
- 58:41is Rogue, to be honest.
- 58:44She loves that competition more than any.
- 58:47So that's kind of the one
- 58:48that we've circled as far
- 58:50as priority is concerned.
- 58:52But obviously the goal is to
- 58:55be able to make the games, obviously,
- 58:57and qualify for Rogue while
- 58:59she's doing the WFP.
- 59:02But for sure,
- 59:03I think the first weekend did
- 59:05not go as planned.
- 59:06I think she was irritated.
- 59:08um you know we talked about
- 59:09it afterwards and and I
- 59:10think you'll you'll see a
- 59:11better version of her um in
- 59:14mesa so I I don't mean to
- 59:19dive down this path but we
- 59:21had this this crossfit game
- 59:22season we talked about how
- 59:25you know europe was pretty
- 59:26much everything was in
- 59:27three weeks yeah either
- 59:29make it then or you don't
- 59:30make it at all yeah um
- 59:33I hate the fact that there were,
- 59:34there were adding back the
- 59:35regional aspect to some, but not all.
- 59:38And I don't think we're getting the best,
- 59:41the best athletes to the games.
- 59:42No, we aren't.
- 59:44I also have a problem with
- 59:46like the fact that you can compete,
- 59:49just continue to do these, you know,
- 59:51you go to semi after semi, after semi,
- 59:53after semi.
- 59:54And then the semis are now
- 59:55opening it up for everyone.
- 59:56And anyone who finished, you know,
- 59:57if you missed it by ten spots,
- 59:59twenty spots, you can now come there.
- 1:00:01It's just like,
- 1:00:02are we doing like I you just
- 1:00:04it's driving me insane you
- 1:00:05know um but yeah I I I
- 1:00:09don't know man I I I don't
- 1:00:14think that that the way
- 1:00:15that this season is set up
- 1:00:16is is optimal uh and I
- 1:00:20think it's confusing I
- 1:00:21think it's confusing the
- 1:00:22fans I think it's confusing
- 1:00:23the athletes um
- 1:00:26Now Last Chance comes out,
- 1:00:27and I still don't quite get it,
- 1:00:31but it is what it is.
- 1:00:33And they're not true
- 1:00:34semifinals because you're
- 1:00:35allowing people to
- 1:00:36participate that aren't
- 1:00:38participating in the season.
- 1:00:40So then you have leaderboard
- 1:00:42scores all messed up
- 1:00:43because someone is taking
- 1:00:45these points away.
- 1:00:47Yeah.
- 1:00:48And depending on their
- 1:00:49strength and your strength,
- 1:00:50that could hurt you, help you.
- 1:00:53Like it's just,
- 1:00:54it's making it all such a mess.
- 1:00:57Yeah.
- 1:00:59And that goes back to what
- 1:01:00we said at the front of,
- 1:01:01and I want someone to
- 1:01:02compete with CrossFit so
- 1:01:03that they do better.
- 1:01:06yeah I don't know that
- 1:01:08that's the thing though I
- 1:01:09don't know that competing
- 1:01:11with crossfit is going to
- 1:01:12make them do better I you
- 1:01:14know I think unfortunately
- 1:01:16like you have to make a
- 1:01:16choice yeah I just I just
- 1:01:20don't understand and and
- 1:01:23obviously a lot of it roll
- 1:01:24offs around money right I
- 1:01:25mean like we don't have we
- 1:01:27don't have what we've had
- 1:01:29historically because of
- 1:01:30that I understand that um
- 1:01:33I don't know, man.
- 1:01:34I don't know what the perfect solution is,
- 1:01:36but I can tell you that
- 1:01:38this season is just a bit
- 1:01:40of a mess when you look at it.
- 1:01:43And the fact that people can
- 1:01:44qualify from three,
- 1:01:46four different competitions
- 1:01:48and then the last chance
- 1:01:49and then online and people
- 1:01:51are doing Isabel a hundred times.
- 1:01:53I mean, it's just wild to me.
- 1:01:55You're going to have people
- 1:01:56doing Isabel four times.
- 1:01:57I mean,
- 1:01:58does anybody really want to watch
- 1:01:59that shit four times?
- 1:02:00It was really cool at Mayhem.
- 1:02:02Just have it be at Mayhem.
- 1:02:03Like that's all it needed to be.
- 1:02:05Just let mayhem be the one
- 1:02:07you didn't need to do it.
- 1:02:09If you're going to let
- 1:02:09people compete at multiple weekends,
- 1:02:12don't, don't have a repeat workout.
- 1:02:14It doesn't make any sense.
- 1:02:16I mean, there's just things that you just,
- 1:02:17you know, you shake your head at,
- 1:02:20you know, but listen,
- 1:02:21at the end of the day, like,
- 1:02:25it's a huge deal to make the
- 1:02:26crossfit games it's a huge
- 1:02:28deal to compete at the
- 1:02:29crossfit games it's a it's
- 1:02:30a huge deal to to you know
- 1:02:33be able to say you're a
- 1:02:34crossfit games athlete I
- 1:02:35mean that means something
- 1:02:36and it still means
- 1:02:38something and at the end of
- 1:02:39the day like I just feel
- 1:02:42like the the qualification
- 1:02:44to get there right now is
- 1:02:47It's not as prestigious as it should be.
- 1:02:49Like it should be really hard.
- 1:02:52Shouldn't have five shots to do it.
- 1:02:54You know what I mean?
- 1:02:54You should be able to go
- 1:02:55from this place to this place,
- 1:02:57to this place, to this place,
- 1:02:58chasing a game spot.
- 1:02:59I mean, I just think that's ridiculous.
- 1:03:01If you're going to allow that,
- 1:03:03then let's go all the way
- 1:03:03back to twenty nineteen and
- 1:03:05have thirty different options.
- 1:03:07So everybody has three or four shots,
- 1:03:09right?
- 1:03:10yes like don't have it like
- 1:03:12a just a handful and then
- 1:03:14people can do all of them
- 1:03:15let's I you know I don't we
- 1:03:17could that could go on
- 1:03:18forever but we could you
- 1:03:20know but but listen at the
- 1:03:21end of the day you know I
- 1:03:23mean I I think we'll still
- 1:03:26I think we'll still get you
- 1:03:29know the best athletes
- 1:03:32or at least the ones who
- 1:03:34competed in the season,
- 1:03:35because obviously there are
- 1:03:36a few that aren't competing
- 1:03:38that are arguably top three, top four.
- 1:03:45But I think besides that,
- 1:03:46we'll still get a phenomenal show.
- 1:03:50We'll still get a great test of fitness.
- 1:03:54I was not,
- 1:03:55I think a lot of people will say
- 1:03:57a lot of people,
- 1:03:58last year's games was phenomenal.
- 1:04:00You know,
- 1:04:01obviously last year's games was a tragedy,
- 1:04:03but beyond that, I stopped programming.
- 1:04:05It was terrible.
- 1:04:07And I'm hoping that, you know,
- 1:04:09this year we'll get, you know, a more...
- 1:04:14kind of normal programming and nor,
- 1:04:17you know, a normal event and, you know,
- 1:04:20where we can,
- 1:04:20where we can come off of that and say,
- 1:04:22okay, you know,
- 1:04:23we feel good about that situation.
- 1:04:26But yeah,
- 1:04:27I think leading up to it right now,
- 1:04:29it's a bit of a mess for sure.
- 1:04:30And anyone who, who,
- 1:04:31anyone who says it's not,
- 1:04:32it's just kind of lying to
- 1:04:33themselves or drinking the
- 1:04:35punch and they don't want to, you know,
- 1:04:38really want to be honest with themselves.
- 1:04:40Yeah.
- 1:04:41I've kept you long enough
- 1:04:42tonight justin I want to
- 1:04:43thank you so much for
