Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Gail Downey is our Europe and UK correspondent. Morning to
- 0:03Speaker 1: you go. Real problems here with the big cleanup too
- 0:05Speaker 1: after the big storms across the UK.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Yes, it's actually we now have a second storm on
- 0:12Speaker 2: its way which has begun to affect southwest of England,
- 0:15Speaker 2: so places like Devon and Cornwall. So the cleanup operation
- 0:20Speaker 2: continues in Northern Ireland, Wales and parts of western England
- 0:24Speaker 2: and of course the Irish Republic as well. We're are
- 0:27Speaker 2: the worst affected and two people died in separate incidents
- 0:31Speaker 2: when their cars were hit by falling trees. In Northern Ireland.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Seventy five thousand people are still without power and the
- 0:38Speaker 2: energy companies are saying it could take up to ten
- 0:40Speaker 2: days to complete repairs needed. As I say, this isn't
- 0:44Speaker 2: the end of the bad weather. The new storm now
- 0:47Speaker 2: is called Harmonia, and that's also leaving thousands of homes
- 0:51Speaker 2: without power today at Palmas, the Coast Guard is saying
- 0:56Speaker 2: to people please please stay away from the coast because
- 1:00Speaker 2: of the crashing waves. Conditions out at sea are described
- 1:03Speaker 2: as really really bad.
- 1:05Speaker 1: To Jal that just sounds absolutely horrendous. The whole world's
- 1:08Speaker 1: changing with the weather systems I really feel for you
- 1:11Speaker 1: people there, but there's some good news possibly with Heathrow
- 1:14Speaker 1: Airport possibly getting a third runway.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Well, this has come out of an interview done by
- 1:20Speaker 2: the Chancellor Rachel Reeves. This week the government is expected
- 1:25Speaker 2: to make an announcement as part of plans to boost
- 1:27Speaker 2: the UK economy, and part of that announcement it looks
- 1:31Speaker 2: like it could be talk of a third runway at Heathrow.
- 1:35Speaker 2: So the government's already approved the expansion of London City
- 1:38Speaker 2: Airport and also Stanstead Airport, stan said, which is more
- 1:42Speaker 2: popular for holiday flights. And now she's announced Rachel Reeves
- 1:46Speaker 2: and said they're looking at backing the expansion of Heathrow,
- 1:49Speaker 2: saying that sustainable aviation and economic growth go hand in
- 1:53Speaker 2: hand and that rather than circling London flights can land.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Of course, the environmentalists are concerned about this. What she
- 2:00Speaker 2: says is sustainable fuel was changing the carbon emissions from flying.
- 2:05Speaker 2: But not everyone's going to be happy. Environmental groups, as
- 2:08Speaker 2: I mentioned, residents living near the airport and even some
- 2:11Speaker 2: labor MPs, including the Prime Minister when he was in opposition,
- 2:17Speaker 2: have all voiced concern. In the past. London's Mayor said
- 2:21Speaker 2: he khn't said he was still opposed to a third runway,
- 2:24Speaker 2: and he would actually support a legal challenge if the
- 2:26Speaker 2: government did back proposals for the third runway.
- 2:29Speaker 1: See I've always thought he throw ahead more than two runways. Anyway.
- 2:32Speaker 1: It's one of the biggest airports I've ever been to.
- 2:36Speaker 2: It's absolutely huge, isn't it. And it's something like a
- 2:39Speaker 2: plane lands every three minutes, lands or takes off every
- 2:43Speaker 2: three minutes. It is constantly busy. And that's the thing
- 2:46Speaker 2: that local residents, people living near the airport really really
- 2:50Speaker 2: don't want any more any more runways.
- 2:54Speaker 1: No, that's always the case, isn't the goale Not in
- 2:56Speaker 1: my backyard. No prisons, no shopping malls, no airport to
- 3:00Speaker 1: know anything really just lead me alone to my piece
- 3:02Speaker 1: and quite all the very best scale. Thank you so much.
- 3:04Speaker 1: With all those storms you're confronted with over there, I
- 3:07Speaker 1: really feel for all of the people of the UK
- 3:08Speaker 1: that may well be listening on iHeartRadio Gail Downey, our
- 3:12Speaker 1: Europe and UK correspondent for.
