- 0:44My name is Annabelle and I'm your Wednesday Mini Tech Scroll
- 0:46host and also the deputy editor of the youth digital media brand
- 0:50Centennial World. Welcome back to mini tech
- 0:53scroll. I would just like to preface for
- 0:55this week's episode. If I look or seem tired, there
- 1:00is in fact a reason for that, and that is that I woke up for
- 1:053:00 AM this morning to participate in the Ticketmaster
- 1:09wall for Ariana Grande presale tickets.
- 1:12No, she isn't coming to Australia and no, I do not have
- 1:15any plans to go overseas next year.
- 1:18But I am extremely delusional when it comes to Ariana Grande
- 1:22and I will make it happen. I am so delusional in fact, that
- 1:25I have a group like crowd selfie with her from way back in 2014.
- 1:31You can just see me. I am right in the corner.
- 1:33I'll actually go look through my camera roll while I'm editing
- 1:36and see if I can find the photo so I can insert it on screen
- 1:39because it's honestly so funny. But even though I did get up at
- 1:433:00 AM, I did not win the Ticketmaster war.
- 1:47I am so upset. I mean I'm going to try again
- 1:50obviously because the parasocial power cannot be stopped and
- 1:55stifled. If you have any tips please drop
- 1:58them in the comments I will appreciate it.
- 1:59Or if like you guys want to give me tickets, like would love that
- 2:02too. I'm kidding, actually, I'm not.
- 2:04OK, sorry for a little bit of a ramble, but before we get into
- 2:08the stories today, Please remember to rate, review and
- 2:10subscribe. Lauren keeps asking you guys to
- 2:13star rate US on Spotify, so I'm also reiterating that here.
- 2:17We also have a buy me a coffee link in the description if you
- 2:21are so inclined. So yeah, let's get into the
- 2:23content. The first story I wanted to talk
- 2:25about today is a little bit of an update on Roblox, and that is
- 2:28that the platform is officially rolling out short form video.
- 2:32So these short form videos are called Roblox Moments, and it's
- 2:36essentially another way for users to share clips of their
- 2:38gameplay. This, alongside other
- 2:40announcements were shared at the Roblox Developers Conference,
- 2:44where Roblox Moments is meant to improve discoverability on the
- 2:48platform as well as offer creators new tools for content
- 2:51creation, according to the blog published on the website.
- 2:54There are also built in safety measures where quote all capture
- 2:58content for publication is proactively moderated and we
- 3:01make it easy for users to report any inappropriate content.
- 3:04Roblox Moments is available to users 13 or older at launch, so
- 3:08it's currently in beta for reference.
- 3:11But from the explanatory videos that the platform has uploaded,
- 3:14it looks pretty easy to use where you can essentially just
- 3:16start screen recording by clicking on an option in the
- 3:20drop down menu during gameplay. And to discover content, you can
- 3:23search moments in the search bar on Roblox where clicking through
- 3:26will kind of bring you to a for you page style feed and you can
- 3:30just scroll through. And I think the videos are under
- 3:3230 seconds long at this point. Roblox will also be rolling out
- 3:36creator APIs down the track that will allow creators to build
- 3:40their own in game moments and uploads as well as their own
- 3:43discovery feed. So I guess the bigger question
- 3:46is why would Roblox pursue this? So I think this is clearly an
- 3:50effort from within Roblox to capitalize on the amount of
- 3:54clips that are going viral across various games across
- 3:57different platforms. This is something they actually
- 3:59included in the blog quote. For years users have been doing
- 4:03this off platform, creating a massive presence with Roblox
- 4:06related content, garnering over 1 trillion video views on
- 4:09YouTube. We are building on the momentum
- 4:11we've seen directly on Roblox, where users have already
- 4:15captured over 930 million screenshots and in the short
- 4:18time since we've launched video captures in July, over 240
- 4:21million videos in experiences. So there is clearly a demand for
- 4:25this kind of content where I don't think it's a surprise that
- 4:28Roblox would want to cash in. I have seen a bit of a mixed
- 4:32response to this update. Some users are excited about it
- 4:36given that they already tend to watch short form Roblox content
- 4:39on other platforms, whereas others are not so impressed,
- 4:42saying that there are so many other problems on Roblox that
- 4:46should be fixed within the platform first.
- 4:49Of course, we always know that there is work to be done on
- 4:52Roblox when it comes to keeping children safe, so I definitely
- 4:55think that is a fair response. But also at this point, do we
- 4:59really need another short form video feed?
- 5:03Every app is just simply obsessed with going down this
- 5:06path because of the popularity of TikTok, and frankly, Roblox
- 5:10does feel a little late to the game.
- 5:11Like it's 2025. I don't know how this hasn't
- 5:14happened already, even though Roblox is like 5 years late.
- 5:18Arguably, Roblox is definitely trying to do a little bit of
- 5:22everything. So it seems like we reported on
- 5:24earlier this year that the Roblox CEO was pretty keen on
- 5:27incorporating dating, which is something that is considered
- 5:31widely inappropriate and questionable since the platform
- 5:34is predominantly used by children.
- 5:36As I explained last time we reported on this, I I kind of
- 5:40think that this attempt to move into dating is to keep current
- 5:44Roblox users on the platform as they grow older and potentially
- 5:48grow out of the reasons why they use Roblox.
- 5:50Now that doesn't mean though that it is OK, but also Speaking
- 5:54of the Roblox dating of it all, this is especially controversial
- 5:57at the moment because of everything going on between
- 6:00Roblox and Schlep, which I haven't actually gone into on
- 6:02mini text scroll. So this is a little bit of a
- 6:04tangent, but just quickly. Schlep is a Texas based YouTube
- 6:08who has posed as a young gamer on Roblox to catch predators,
- 6:12claiming that his efforts have led to at least six arrests.
- 6:15He started doing this because he himself had been groomed on
- 6:18Roblox, leading to a suicide attempt.
- 6:21Schlep had been very vocal about his work on the platform, where
- 6:24Roblox was eventually pressured to issue a statement about how
- 6:27it combats safety online. It also ended up addressing how
- 6:30the platform deals with vigilantes quote UN quote of
- 6:33which they see Schlep as a part of.
- 6:35So it seems the YouTube later received a cease and desist
- 6:39notice from Roblox informing that his account would be closed
- 6:42for violations related to his efforts to catch these
- 6:45predators. He alleged that he had received
- 6:48no prior warnings before this point.
- 6:50Since then, though, Schlep has been kicked from the platform
- 6:53where thousands of his supporters went with him.
- 6:56So I just think that's a little bit of important context that we
- 6:59should be considering when we're talking about Roblox at the
- 7:01moment, especially as Roblox is rolling out new functions that
- 7:04people may have or may have not asked for.
- 7:07All that to say though, obviously updates are welcome on
- 7:10Roblox, but it is clear that they have some pretty important
- 7:13safety issues that need to be addressed and prioritized.
- 7:16OK, so that brings us to our second story for today, which is
- 7:20also related to safety measures. I thought it was important that
- 7:24we talk about all the age verification discourse that has
- 7:26been going on online. Now this has been the topic of
- 7:29conversations for weeks. I just haven't had a chance to
- 7:32fully get into it with you guys. So I thought I would give a
- 7:35quick overview of the conversation and the commentary
- 7:38around it in this week's episode.
- 7:40Granted, I will not be able to get into everything, so I
- 7:43consider this as a a little bit of a primer to the broader
- 7:46conversation. We have touched on age
- 7:48verification before, specifically in the Australian
- 7:51context when we were talking about the impending social media
- 7:54ban for under sixteens. But if you're wondering what the
- 7:57big deal around age verification is, it's not just putting your
- 8:01birthday in or ticking a box to prove that you're above a
- 8:04certain age. These days it's often involving
- 8:07uploading your ID or sharing biometric data, whether that be
- 8:10your face or your hands, to prove that you are an adult or
- 8:14of a certain age. Like I said, this has been a
- 8:17topic of conversation online for weeks now, but it really speed
- 8:20up since the UK rolled out new online safety measures at the
- 8:24end of July. On July 25th it was expected
- 8:27that social media platforms, adult websites and search
- 8:30engines put certain measures in place to prevent children from
- 8:33accessing non safer work content or messaging that encourages
- 8:37self harm, eating disorders and so on.
- 8:40I'm sure we can all agree that the premise of this is positive.
- 8:43We need to protect children online.
- 8:45This is the first time that we have really seen children and
- 8:48adults all kind of being in the same room, but it is the
- 8:52execution of age verification that have had many people
- 8:57worried. There was an edition of User Mag
- 8:59that I thought explained the fears and worries around age
- 9:04verification very well, so I will just read a quote from that
- 9:07now. Quote proponents claim this will
- 9:09protect children, but in practice it restricts young
- 9:12people's ability to learn, express themselves and connect,
- 9:15creates A pretext for censoring political dissent, and
- 9:17concentrates more power in the tech industry.
- 9:20Within a week, the rollout triggered unprecedented
- 9:23censorship, novel surveillance concerns, and a wave of
- 9:26workarounds. Expressing how easily safety
- 9:28rhetoric can be weaponized to discriminate and control those
- 9:32harms will not just impact minors, but also adults whose
- 9:34access to lawful information will be curtailed, community
- 9:38subject to political oppression, and anyone forced to hand over
- 9:41sensitive data to participate online will also become
- 9:44vulnerable. So clearly there are both
- 9:46censorship concerns but also privacy concerns with the way
- 9:49age verification is operating currently.
- 9:52And these privacy concerns are especially prominent when you
- 9:56have third party data verification tools that may be
- 9:59used here. There are a lot of problems with
- 10:01data storage and the security of sensitive information.
- 10:06Probably one of the most obvious examples of this that happened
- 10:09recently is the T app breach that we also covered a few weeks
- 10:12ago. If you didn't catch that
- 10:13episode, there was a pretty extensive data breach that left
- 10:16thousands of woman's IDs exposed that were used during the
- 10:20verification process to join the app, and these IDs were
- 10:24subsequently available on 4 Chan.
- 10:26Because of this, T has reportedly been hit with two
- 10:30class action lawsuits since the breach.
- 10:32So with that kind of context, many argue that age gating is a
- 10:36quick and inefficient fix to a much bigger problem.
- 10:40And these age verification measures aren't just unique to
- 10:44the UK, even though that's what really kicked off the
- 10:46conversation this year. Of course, Australia's under 16
- 10:50ban is significant as we've discussed before, but there are
- 10:53also more and more states in the US that are implementing new age
- 10:56gating rules. From what I've seen, around 22
- 10:59states have laws in effect. Well, three more states have
- 11:03laws passed, but they aren't in effect at this current time.
- 11:06Now that we have all of that covered, I wanted to touch on
- 11:09how these changes will affect the creator economy or what
- 11:12people are saying about that at the very least, since this is an
- 11:16Internet culture podcast at its core.
- 11:18This is actually what prompted me to cover this topic today
- 11:21because I came across an article speaking about how LGBTQIA Plus
- 11:25created specifically would be impacted, and I thought this was
- 11:29an important and interesting angle to cover this from.
- 11:32So as the Internet moves in a more conservative direction,
- 11:36which has been well documented by this point, there's
- 11:39unfortunately more hatred, discrimination, and vitriol
- 11:43directed to LGBTQIA Plus creators and users.
- 11:47With that being said, various activists have noted that these
- 11:50age gating laws, especially those in reference to sexual
- 11:53content, may be wrongfully used against the LGBTQIA Plus
- 11:58community. In a conversation with CT Jones
- 12:00for Rolling Stone, Shoshana Wiseman, who is a digital
- 12:03director and fellow at the policy think tank R St.
- 12:06Institute, explained how some of the language in the age
- 12:10verification bills in the US specifically are very vague and
- 12:14how this will ultimately restrict educational or medical
- 12:18content around information relating to the queer community,
- 12:21safer sex or gender affirming care.
- 12:23As CT Jones writes in the article quote, for most laws,
- 12:27there is little to no guidance on what exactly constitutes as
- 12:30harmful content. To mine is the lack of nuance in
- 12:33the legislative language means that anything from LGBTQ
- 12:36centered information to diverse authors could be considered
- 12:39explicit. One article I came across while
- 12:41researching for this episode actually specifically spoke to
- 12:44how aid verification and age gating is putting the queer
- 12:49adult industry and their work is at risk.
- 12:52Obviously this is a little bit of a different point because not
- 12:55safe for work content is being prioritized when it comes to age
- 12:59gating, but I do think our articles like this show how
- 13:03queer spaces, LGBTQIA plus spaces, content or creators may
- 13:08be hit harder by these moves. But yes, I definitely think this
- 13:12is just scratching the service and we probably will be talking
- 13:15about this more and more moving forward.
- 13:18But I am really curious to hear what you guys think about the
- 13:21moves towards age verification across the world.
- 13:24I find it a really complicated issue because I think at its
- 13:27core, I agree children shouldn't have unfettered access to the
- 13:32Internet. You never know what they're
- 13:33going to come across. But I definitely understand the
- 13:36concerns with how age verification is set to be
- 13:40implemented. But I'm curious, do you think it
- 13:42is a genuine attempt to protect children from adult material?
- 13:46Do you think it has bigger risks around freedom of speech and
- 13:49access to information? Are both of these things true at
- 13:52once? Let me know because I feel like
- 13:54I am still wrapping my head around this myself.
- 13:57OK, and lastly we have a bit of a shorter story to end off on.
- 14:01I wanted to talk about this PR package that has been making the
- 14:04rounds. So MU MU has been gaining some
- 14:07traction online after they sent creators APR box with the new
- 14:10mutine fragrance. The box came locked and creators
- 14:14unlocked it to find the fragrance.
- 14:17Some cards as well as little Mimi branded Mike.
- 14:20Here is the tech element. Lauren actually sent this story
- 14:23for me to cover after seeing a threads post that read quote
- 14:26Mimi branded Mike's landing with creators and this is what can
- 14:30only be referred to as a massive flex as APR item.
- 14:33I did some digging myself. You can search up Mutine PR box
- 14:37on TikTok and you can see the videos, but I saw quite a few
- 14:40creators post about this PR box, including the of Luna Montana
- 14:44who I used to watch a lot when I was a bit younger.
- 14:47This is obviously a little bit more of an industry specific
- 14:49story, but I think it's still interesting to talk about
- 14:52because it feels like an example of PR that is actually useful
- 14:57and more socially acceptable. We all know that viewers have
- 15:01become so so tired of seeing wasteful packaging and excessive
- 15:05products. NPR.
- 15:06It just doesn't land well with the lifestyle gap, the privilege
- 15:10gap between viewers and creators, as well as
- 15:14overconsumption that has become second nature to the digital
- 15:17world. I don't know if you guys
- 15:18remember but I think it was last year the TikTok creator Darcy
- 15:21Mcqueeney did this a massive hole.
- 15:23I think it was like 4 days of unboxing and she received so
- 15:27much backlash. I remember discussing this with
- 15:30Lauren, and we point a couple of reasons as to why this hole was
- 15:35not well received. Obviously, it's completely
- 15:38excessive, but it wasn't the first time that we've seen this
- 15:41kind of content go viral online. Look back at 2016, that type of
- 15:46content ruled the Internet, and we kind of came to the
- 15:49conclusion that people were upset with Darcy Mcqueeney
- 15:52because they hadn't built the same level of a parasocial
- 15:55relationship that people did with the OG beauty Youtubers,
- 15:59where they were happy to see them receive PR even though it
- 16:02was also in excess. On top of this, the digital
- 16:05space has just changed so much since that time.
- 16:09Excessive packaging is just not going to be well received by the
- 16:12audience. So this kind of mic, I think was
- 16:14really, really smart because it's useful, but also if
- 16:18creators do end up using this mic for other content, it's
- 16:21continued advertising and I feel like that's obviously the goal.
- 16:25But anyway, that's a bit of a ride of story to end off on, but
- 16:29it's always on to incorporate a little bit more of an Internet
- 16:32culture heavy story in a mini tech scroll every once in a
- 16:34while. Well, that is everything from
- 16:37mini tech scroll today. I hope you guys enjoyed this
- 16:41week's episode. Please remember to rate, review
- 16:44and subscribe and wish me luck for the Ticketmaster Ball.
- 16:49But yes, Lauren will speak to you guys tomorrow and I will see
- 16:52you next week. Thanks for listening.
- 16:54Bye.
