- 1:41Speaker 2: it's like there's this sense of renewal and I'm given
- 1:45Speaker 2: strength each day and then I get to go share it.
- 1:48Speaker 2: So it's a blessing.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Can we come visit you?
- 1:52Speaker 2: Absolutely? Yes, please do.
- 1:54Speaker 3: We can do yoga on the beach, all the things
- 1:57Speaker 3: we can do yoga on the beach.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I've got two spare beds Casa Sukrassa.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Yes, love it.
- 2:04Speaker 3: So for those of our listeners that aren't familiar with you,
- 2:08Speaker 3: why don't you give us a brief background of what
- 2:12Speaker 3: got you into fitness and about your book and what
- 2:17Speaker 3: is does he mind Body?
- 2:21Speaker 2: So I'm originally from downtown Chicago and my mother was
- 2:25Speaker 2: a hippie. She was a disciple of Goswami Korean Nanda
- 2:28Speaker 2: at the Temple of Korea Yoga in Chicago. I was
- 2:31Speaker 2: given my first mantra at the age of six years old.
- 2:34Speaker 2: I learned how to meditate and I didn't really learn
- 2:37Speaker 2: so much about the physical practice of yoga at that time.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Fast forward, I got really deep into ballet. I went
- 2:44Speaker 2: to Arizona State my first year of college. I was
- 2:47Speaker 2: in a ballet class. I went to the doctor because
- 2:51Speaker 2: I had knee problems. I'm like, please help me, my
- 2:54Speaker 2: knee hurts. He said, don't worry. You just need to
- 2:58Speaker 2: strengthen your quads. And I said, what's a quad? And
- 3:03Speaker 2: as fate would have it, that evening, Jackie Paisley May
- 3:07Speaker 2: she rest in peace. She was fourth place Miss Olympia
- 3:11Speaker 2: that year. She had come and spoken to our sorority
- 3:15Speaker 2: and she was teaching us about nutrition and how to
- 3:18Speaker 2: recomp your body and all of the things. And so
- 3:20Speaker 2: I went and spoke with her afterwards, and I said, Hey,
- 3:23Speaker 2: I've got this quad thing and can you help me?
- 3:26Speaker 2: And she said, yes, of course, and she took me
- 3:28Speaker 2: to my first gym that I ever went to, Bovey's
- 3:31Speaker 2: Gym in Arizona. It's kind of like the Golds of Arizona.
- 3:35Speaker 2: And I fell so in love and I felt this
- 3:39Speaker 2: whole body click of like this is it. This is
- 3:43Speaker 2: where I'm supposed to be. And so I changed my
- 3:46Speaker 2: major to kinesiology. I wound up moving back to Chicago
- 3:49Speaker 2: because I felt like a su is super fun, but
- 3:52Speaker 2: I was really learning how to party a little too well.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So I went back right totally. And then I went
- 4:02Speaker 2: on to get my degree in kinesiology, my master's in
- 4:05Speaker 2: corporate fitness. I'm a little bit, a little bit dedicated
- 4:10Speaker 2: to education, and so I got like every certification under
- 4:13Speaker 2: the sun, personal training, group, fitness, you name it. And
- 4:17Speaker 2: from there, stick with me just for another minute here
- 4:21Speaker 2: of the journey, because it all comes together from there.
- 4:24Speaker 2: I moved to Mexico and I opened a gym, Cobbo
- 4:28Speaker 2: Health and Fitness. I'm half Mexican and did not grow
- 4:31Speaker 2: up with my biological father, and I wanted to learn Spanish,
- 4:34Speaker 2: and I wanted to learn about my culture, and I
- 4:36Speaker 2: wanted to bring fitness to Mexico. So I moved down there.
- 4:40Speaker 2: I opened this gym, and this wonderful man walks in
- 4:43Speaker 2: one day and he says, I would like to teach
- 4:45Speaker 2: yoga at your gym. And I said what's your name?
- 4:49Speaker 2: And he said Tona Tu, And I'm like, what does
- 4:51Speaker 2: that mean? It's the Aztech name for the Sun God.
- 4:55Speaker 2: I'm like, yes, of course, complays teach yoga right, So
- 5:00Speaker 2: as he's teaching yoga, my body had this memory of like,
- 5:03Speaker 2: oh yeah, I did this as a little kid, and
- 5:06Speaker 2: then this whole concept of like, wait, I need both
- 5:11Speaker 2: of these for my body mind, for my bodymind complex,
- 5:14Speaker 2: for health. If I can lift heavy and enjoy yoga,
- 5:19Speaker 2: this is what makes my heart sing. And so fast forward.
- 5:24Speaker 2: I moved to LA a few years later because I
- 5:26Speaker 2: wanted to get deeper into media and my dream back
- 5:30Speaker 2: in the day was to do a DVD. So I
- 5:33Speaker 2: went on to do t ENDBDS, yoga, fitness for Yoga, dance,
- 5:37Speaker 2: all the things. And when I was thirty seven, I
- 5:42Speaker 2: had my first pregnancy with my son Cruise, and I
- 5:46Speaker 2: started going to people's classes, yoga classes, and I'm like,
- 5:49Speaker 2: I felt like Goldilocks, like this class is too hard,
- 5:52Speaker 2: this class is too easy, this class they don't say
- 5:54Speaker 2: the word baby, and my goodness, I've had so much
- 5:58Speaker 2: education at this point I needed to step up and
- 6:01Speaker 2: create something that felt good in my own body. So
- 6:05Speaker 2: I went into deep meditation. I spoke to the baby
- 6:08Speaker 2: inside and I said I'm going to move with you,
- 6:11Speaker 2: please guide me. And that was how I started to
- 6:14Speaker 2: get really deep into prenatal I went on to do
- 6:17Speaker 2: more certifications, more DVDs. I wrote my first book at
- 6:20Speaker 2: that point, and I really realized that as fitness professionals,
- 6:26Speaker 2: especially and Haley, I've been listening to your story a
- 6:29Speaker 2: little bit about what is it the osteo and necrosis?
- 6:34Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:35Speaker 2: Yeah, when we have something that's happening in our own
- 6:39Speaker 2: bodies that we kind of need to figure out, that's
- 6:43Speaker 2: a blessing because when we figure it out, we get
- 6:46Speaker 2: to go share it with all the people that are
- 6:48Speaker 2: experiencing that. So through pregnancy and then new motherhood, I
- 6:53Speaker 2: realized like, oh my gosh, I have all this information
- 6:56Speaker 2: that I can share with mommies everywhere. And so again
- 6:59Speaker 2: that led to the first book, which is Your Strong
- 7:02Speaker 2: Sexy Pregnancy. I looked over because it's over here and
- 7:05Speaker 2: then and then fast forward. I'm now a woman of
- 7:12Speaker 2: a certain age, and as I started to get into perimenopause,
- 7:17Speaker 2: I realized, like, hey, kind of the same thing. I
- 7:20Speaker 2: couldn't find all the information that I needed about how
- 7:24Speaker 2: do I navigate these changes in my own body. So
- 7:27Speaker 2: I got really deep into that study and I went
- 7:30Speaker 2: on to write my second book, Total Body Beautiful, with
- 7:33Speaker 2: two amazing trainers, Andrea Orbeck, she's celebrity trainer all the
- 7:38Speaker 2: Things in LA and my friend Nicole Stewart, who is
- 7:41Speaker 2: celebrity Pilate's instructor. We used to share a lot of
- 7:45Speaker 2: clients when I was living in Los Angeles, and we
- 7:47Speaker 2: came together during the pandemic and we gathered all of
- 7:50Speaker 2: this information because we're like, women are suffering alone in
- 7:54Speaker 2: their houses right now. This is terrible, and so we
- 7:57Speaker 2: wanted to bring that from our hearts. And so what
- 8:00Speaker 2: I've realized now is my passion is really for helping
- 8:04Speaker 2: women through life's transitions. So whether it's you know, having
- 8:08Speaker 2: a baby, working with that new body that you have
- 8:12Speaker 2: after you've had a baby, perimenopause, menopause beyond, Like, I'm
- 8:17Speaker 2: here to give you whatever it is that you need,
- 8:20Speaker 2: whether it's strength or peace or simply enjoying a deep breath.
- 8:27Speaker 2: I have amassed this toolbox and it is my joy
- 8:32Speaker 2: to share it.
- 8:35Speaker 3: And you're finishing your PhD in exercise science.
- 8:38Speaker 4: Is that correct?
- 8:41Speaker 2: Yes? So as the perimenopausal journey kind of began, I
- 8:46Speaker 2: realized I always want I just have to tell you,
- 8:50Speaker 2: I've always wanted to be doctor DESI like, it's just
- 8:54Speaker 2: a thing.
- 8:55Speaker 4: It has a bring to it that.
- 8:59Speaker 2: Yeah, like doctor, So exactly, I went back to school.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I'm at Concordia Saint Paul University now and I'm at
- 9:09Speaker 2: the tail end of my PhD in kinesiology. My dissertation.
- 9:15Speaker 2: I've written the first three chapters and the actual experiment
- 9:17Speaker 2: started yesterday, so Prodigall was really excited. Yes, yes, I'm
- 9:24Speaker 2: doing my dissertation on working with yoga and menopausal education
- 9:29Speaker 2: as an intervention to help women navigate the changes that
- 9:34Speaker 2: happen during menopause. So what I found is that in
- 9:38Speaker 2: the research, yoga can help with the transition for sure,
- 9:42Speaker 2: but what I didn't know is that education can help.
- 9:46Speaker 2: So if a woman is educated about the changes that
- 9:49Speaker 2: are happening in her body during this time, she actually
- 9:53Speaker 2: perceives it as being a smoother ride. So I'm like, well,
- 9:57Speaker 2: as an American, you know, I've got this idea of fusion,
- 10:00Speaker 2: and let's like bring it all together because it's kind
- 10:02Speaker 2: of what we do right, and how can we bring
- 10:06Speaker 2: yoga and menopausal education together. So within the practice, I'm
- 10:11Speaker 2: teaching them about you know, like the Big Three. What's
- 10:14Speaker 2: the Big three vasomotor symptoms, sleep disturbances, way gain belly fat,
- 10:20Speaker 2: and I'm teaching them how to work with their bodies
- 10:24Speaker 2: during these changes. So I'm just I'm a big science
- 10:28Speaker 2: nerd and I love it all, and again it's my
- 10:30Speaker 2: joy to share.
- 10:32Speaker 1: I'm going to say, this is what I'm most impressed
- 10:35Speaker 1: with right off the bat and the PhD, all of
- 10:38Speaker 1: those things are incredible, but it's your like the energy
- 10:43Speaker 1: that you send out. And this is how I feel
- 10:46Speaker 1: with one of my dear clients, who is you know,
- 10:49Speaker 1: she goes to India every year and studies yoga and
- 10:53Speaker 1: the practice, and I'm like, I really need to like
- 10:56Speaker 1: get into this zone because I'm such the opposite and
- 11:01Speaker 1: I'm just like.
- 11:02Speaker 4: Go go go, go, go go go, and never.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Can find that and it's hard for me to connect
- 11:08Speaker 1: where you just like you feel it from it from you,
- 11:12Speaker 1: like it's just there.
- 11:14Speaker 3: So it's so true, even just through video, not even
- 11:18Speaker 3: in person, you definitely can feel out.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Haley's right, Thank you so much, And I've I've been
- 11:25Speaker 2: watching your show and learning a little bit about each
- 11:28Speaker 2: of you. And then also I think we all share
- 11:31Speaker 2: a love of Stacy Simms in her work and how
- 11:35Speaker 2: she talks about polarized training, and you know, on the
- 11:37Speaker 2: one end, we've got like sprints and let's go lift heavy,
- 11:40Speaker 2: and on the other end, like how can we get
- 11:43Speaker 2: into that parasympathetic nervous system response and let your body
- 11:47Speaker 2: just kind of So I live more at this end
- 11:51Speaker 2: in terms of what I teach, but I live here
- 11:54Speaker 2: in my personal life as well, so I get it.
- 11:57Speaker 2: And balancing those scales as a daily.
- 12:00Speaker 3: Task, yes, I feel like I'm I'm hoping to get
- 12:07Speaker 3: balance in my life sometime soon. It's not happening, but
- 12:10Speaker 3: I'm the same way. I need to do yoga as
- 12:13Speaker 3: well and do something softer and quieter to connect with
- 12:19Speaker 3: my mind and body, for sure. But what do you
- 12:23Speaker 3: feel like? Are like the three main things that people
- 12:27Speaker 3: going through perimenopause menopause.
- 12:30Speaker 2: Get from yoga. So yoga has so many beautiful benefits
- 12:36Speaker 2: and it can really help us to connect to our
- 12:39Speaker 2: body and our spirit. But the first thing I'd say
- 12:41Speaker 2: right off the bat is simply learning how to breathe correctly.
- 12:44Speaker 2: I meet so many people that don't know how to breathe.
- 12:47Speaker 2: And when I say inhale, I see women especially suck
- 12:51Speaker 2: in and I'm you know I'm gen X, and so
- 12:54Speaker 2: I remember like the beautiful models that would suck it
- 12:57Speaker 2: in as tight as possible, and some of them, we
- 13:00Speaker 2: even saw them have like ribs removed, and that's literally
- 13:05Speaker 2: like taking away the life force. And so if I
- 13:09Speaker 2: can encourage you to inhale and expand your belly like
- 13:12Speaker 2: a balloon and imagine prama and oxygen just moving to
- 13:16Speaker 2: your cells so that you feel stronger, I feel like
- 13:20Speaker 2: that's a really, really good place to start. The second
- 13:23Speaker 2: thing that I like to move on to is the
- 13:25Speaker 2: power of intention. And before you wake up in the
- 13:29Speaker 2: morning or before you're totally wakeful and reach for that
- 13:31Speaker 2: cell phone and start scrolling and letting the outside world in,
- 13:36Speaker 2: just keep your eyes closed and ask like, show me,
- 13:40Speaker 2: show me, show me, reveal to me what is my
- 13:43Speaker 2: highest good today, and let that become the seed of
- 13:47Speaker 2: the intention that guides you through the whole day. So
- 13:50Speaker 2: when the outside world comes in fast and furious as
- 13:54Speaker 2: it will, I mean like we're not for nothing. We're
- 13:58Speaker 2: about to go into the elections, and the life's a
- 14:01Speaker 2: little crazy and chaotic right now. So how do you
- 14:04Speaker 2: connect to your own inner voice and your inner dream
- 14:08Speaker 2: Because we all have gifts, and it's hard to cultivate
- 14:12Speaker 2: the gifts and to follow the path if everything around
- 14:15Speaker 2: us is so noisy, you know. So that would be
- 14:19Speaker 2: step two. We've got breath, we've got intention, and now
- 14:23Speaker 2: we have like actual movement. Let's move a little bit,
- 14:26Speaker 2: and let's allow this practice to become a moving meditation.
- 14:30Speaker 2: When I see people lifting really really heavy in the gym,
- 14:34Speaker 2: I see the beauty in it, and I'm like, oh
- 14:36Speaker 2: my gosh, that's a form of moving meditation. And we
- 14:39Speaker 2: can do the same thing on our yoga mat. It's
- 14:41Speaker 2: a little different in terms of resistance. You know, you're
- 14:44Speaker 2: using the resistance of your own body, but you can
- 14:47Speaker 2: start to synchronize the breath and the movement and feel
- 14:51Speaker 2: that union. So if I'm inhaling my arms overhead, I
- 14:55Speaker 2: fill my lungs, and if I exhale and fold forward,
- 15:00Speaker 2: I let it all go. Literally, I let all that
- 15:03Speaker 2: stuff go. So those would be really the main three.
- 15:09Speaker 2: And also just as a sort of an umbrella for everything.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Remembering that we are a body mind complex. We're not
- 15:17Speaker 2: like two separate things that are running around. Now, whatever
- 15:20Speaker 2: is going on up here is going to reflect in
- 15:23Speaker 2: the body and vice versa. That's so true.
- 15:27Speaker 1: Yes, So I mean everyone is super well, not everyone,
- 15:33Speaker 1: but I would say the majority of women that I
- 15:36Speaker 1: work with from all over the world. It's like I
- 15:38Speaker 1: barely have time for myself when I do, I have
- 15:43Speaker 1: nine millionaires to run. But you know, I'm trying to
- 15:46Speaker 1: teach them that you deserve thirty minutes to yourself for
- 15:50Speaker 1: a movement to help.
- 15:53Speaker 4: With these longevity goals and all of that.
- 15:55Speaker 1: But the breath work, We've had multiple guests on and
- 16:01Speaker 1: it is so often over missed because it's like everyone
- 16:05Speaker 1: knows how to breathe, but they don't, and that comes
- 16:09Speaker 1: into play. I love you that you say that, because
- 16:11Speaker 1: it's a it's a big piece, and I'm not sure
- 16:16Speaker 1: most women even think about it outside of maybe you know,
- 16:20Speaker 1: like running when you're breathing hard and then you notice
- 16:23Speaker 1: your breath and it can.
- 16:25Speaker 2: Get a little bit out of sync. Also after things
- 16:27Speaker 2: like pregnancy and labor and delivery and Laura, I saw
- 16:30Speaker 2: your beautiful baby on social she's gorgeous. Congratulations. So when
- 16:35Speaker 2: we breathe, you know, we have the diaphragm that's moving
- 16:38Speaker 2: down as we inhale exhaling, it presses everything up. But
- 16:42Speaker 2: we have this whole inner cylinder. So there's the diaphragm,
- 16:46Speaker 2: there's the pelvic floor in front, there's the transfer subdominus.
- 16:50Speaker 2: In back, you have the multifidai. And when we have
- 16:53Speaker 2: a baby, sometimes right afterwards, when we're recovering, things are
- 16:56Speaker 2: just kind of funky and out of sink. And so
- 16:59Speaker 2: maybe the pelp like floors and functioning the way that
- 17:01Speaker 2: it used to. And we need to learn how to
- 17:04Speaker 2: breathe in such a way that everything moves down and
- 17:07Speaker 2: that inhalation and expands, and everything as you exhale moves
- 17:12Speaker 2: up and contracts. And I spend a lot of time
- 17:16Speaker 2: just teaching that, envisioning that cylinder moving up and down
- 17:20Speaker 2: and in and out.
- 17:24Speaker 3: I feel like I need a breathing lesson from you,
- 17:28Speaker 3: but I feel like we just we all just got
- 17:30Speaker 3: a mini little breathing lesson. I definitely forget about breathing
- 17:35Speaker 3: in and filling.
- 17:36Speaker 4: Up your lungs.
- 17:38Speaker 3: But I remember someone, a woman that is also a
- 17:43Speaker 3: yoga teacher, which is ironic. She said to me twenty
- 17:46Speaker 3: years ago, and I never forgot this. I could tell
- 17:49Speaker 3: she was really stressed and frazzled, and she set her
- 17:51Speaker 3: purse down and she took three really deep breasts and
- 17:56Speaker 3: she picked her purse back up, and it was like, Okay,
- 18:00Speaker 3: I'll talk to you later, I'll see you later. And
- 18:02Speaker 3: she's like, don't ever forget three deep breasts will change
- 18:06Speaker 3: your life.
- 18:07Speaker 4: And when she said it, I was like, okay.
- 18:10Speaker 3: But then I could visually see her kind of calm
- 18:13Speaker 3: down from taking those three deep breasts.
- 18:17Speaker 5: And I've never forgotten it.
- 18:19Speaker 3: And sometimes when I'm racing around in my car doing something,
- 18:24Speaker 3: I'll like stop and take three deep breasts and it
- 18:27Speaker 3: does make you feel better, absolutely.
- 18:32Speaker 2: And we have different ways of breathing for all of
- 18:35Speaker 2: the activities in life. You know, we have a certain
- 18:37Speaker 2: way that we breathe when we train. If you're at
- 18:39Speaker 2: the top of a roller coaster, it might be like
- 18:43Speaker 2: third day of vacation, you forgot the cell phone. So
- 18:48Speaker 2: that's kind of my goal. I try to get people
- 18:50Speaker 2: towards the latter.
- 18:53Speaker 1: So what does your everyday look like for work? And
- 18:58Speaker 1: just like what you're rich is, what does a typical
- 19:01Speaker 1: day look like for you?
- 19:04Speaker 2: I have two kids. I have a sixteen year old
- 19:06Speaker 2: who's about to get his driver's license, so I'm constantly
- 19:10Speaker 2: pressing the imaginary break but you know he's getting there.
- 19:14Speaker 2: And I have a ten year old So I wake
- 19:16Speaker 2: up in the morning and we live in Hawaii close
- 19:19Speaker 2: to the beach. I go to the ocean first thing
- 19:22Speaker 2: with my dog, and I set my attentions and I
- 19:25Speaker 2: connect to mother Nature into all that is. I take
- 19:28Speaker 2: my kids to school, I come back to the yoga studio,
- 19:31Speaker 2: I teach online classes and still work with private clients,
- 19:35Speaker 2: and then I go on to do all of my
- 19:37Speaker 2: PhD work and then it's time to go get the
- 19:40Speaker 2: kids and I roll into the evening and if there's
- 19:42Speaker 2: still more work, I do it with them at the
- 19:44Speaker 2: table because we're all students together. And I'm very lucky
- 19:48Speaker 2: that I have a very supportive husband and we've been
- 19:51Speaker 2: married for twenty one years and he knows what's important
- 19:55Speaker 2: to me and he honors that. So I couldn't ask
- 19:58Speaker 2: for more. Wow.
- 20:02Speaker 1: So then do you miss La because you have like
- 20:06Speaker 1: those are the polar opposites almost.
- 20:08Speaker 2: Literally right, Yes, So I miss my people in LA.
- 20:13Speaker 2: And I used to go to Golds Gym Venice and
- 20:15Speaker 2: that was super super fun. For those of you who
- 20:17Speaker 2: have never been there, it's you know, Arnold's just walking
- 20:21Speaker 2: by and Lou and you're like, oh, hey, good morning, Arnold.
- 20:25Speaker 2: So so that part, you know, was amazing. But I
- 20:30Speaker 2: was there for twenty years and I feel like that
- 20:33Speaker 2: chapter is complete and we still go back and visit,
- 20:36Speaker 2: and I still work with my niche is pregnant actresses,
- 20:41Speaker 2: and because of technology, I still am able to do
- 20:45Speaker 2: that via zoom and then when I go to LA
- 20:47Speaker 2: I go and have that in person contact.
- 20:50Speaker 3: I mean, can you tell us who you've worked with
- 20:55Speaker 3: or is it like nda private?
- 21:01Speaker 2: Here? Kate Hudson wrote the forward for this book, so
- 21:03Speaker 2: I can certainly tell you Kate Hudson, and I have
- 21:08Speaker 2: quotes in there from Ashley Tisdale. And I've had the
- 21:12Speaker 2: great privilege of working with people who have a very
- 21:14Speaker 2: large sphere of influence. But just because you might touch
- 21:19Speaker 2: a lot of people doesn't mean that we don't all
- 21:22Speaker 2: touch people. We all have a sphere of influence. And
- 21:25Speaker 2: I'm sure when women see both of you and you're
- 21:28Speaker 2: like killing it and thriving and you have a show
- 21:31Speaker 2: and your training and a mom and like all the things,
- 21:33Speaker 2: it's like, oh, how does she do it? And then
- 21:38Speaker 2: your influence comes through and it's a gift. So is
- 21:41Speaker 2: it fun and cool with celebrities, absolutely for sure, but
- 21:47Speaker 2: working with every mom to me is really like, oh
- 21:50Speaker 2: she can also get the word out and she can
- 21:52Speaker 2: help lift other women as well.
- 21:55Speaker 3: Yeah, so what does he mind body You teach group
- 22:02Speaker 3: classes on that and.
- 22:05Speaker 4: Do one on one.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah, So let me flip it just a little.
- 22:08Speaker 2: It's Dozzy body minds.
- 22:09Speaker 5: Oh my man, that's my mom brain. That's my mom brain.
- 22:16Speaker 2: It's all good. I get it. And so I just
- 22:20Speaker 2: applied for the trademark. I'll just share this with you
- 22:23Speaker 2: for the body Mind workout, And the idea is that
- 22:27Speaker 2: you simply go onto the platform. You go into my
- 22:30Speaker 2: website and there's a very modest payment schedule, and you
- 22:36Speaker 2: choose how you want to feel that day, So let's
- 22:39Speaker 2: say strong. Then you click on strong, and there's a
- 22:43Speaker 2: practice that begins with an intention meditation, We warm up
- 22:47Speaker 2: with yoga, we move into a little bit of fitness,
- 22:50Speaker 2: and so it's this idea of just having twenty minutes
- 22:53Speaker 2: of movement that gives you, that gives you both, that
- 22:56Speaker 2: gives you the ability to connect and to go within
- 23:00Speaker 2: and also to move a little bit right and to
- 23:02Speaker 2: connect this whole body mind thing. Because we're all walking
- 23:06Speaker 2: around like separate silos, like here's my thoughts and there's
- 23:08Speaker 2: my body. No, no, let's come back.
- 23:14Speaker 4: Do you ever get like do you ever lose it?
- 23:18Speaker 3: I know I was.
- 23:18Speaker 5: Thinking the same thing. Does she ever just fly off
- 23:21Speaker 5: the handle?
- 23:22Speaker 1: I like dig in your vibe and like this, just
- 23:26Speaker 1: like the vibe and the energy. It's it's something that
- 23:30Speaker 1: that I feel like I could work on. And I'm
- 23:33Speaker 1: pretty chill too, like I don't really have these like extremes,
- 23:38Speaker 1: But how would you recommend someone like me that I'm
- 23:43Speaker 1: just you know, I'm a little add It's really hard
- 23:46Speaker 1: for me. Like anytime I've gone to a yoga class,
- 23:49Speaker 1: it almost makes me uncomfortable because when I have to
- 23:52Speaker 1: quiet down, I'm like, am I supposed to be thinking
- 23:55Speaker 1: something or saying something? Or I almost put too much
- 23:59Speaker 1: into it because I just don't know how And have
- 24:02Speaker 1: you experienced that where some people like it's hard to
- 24:05Speaker 1: kind of break into that and let and let that
- 24:10Speaker 1: feeling come in and that practice.
- 24:14Speaker 2: So many many years ago in La I was working
- 24:17Speaker 2: with this beautiful woman, Patricia Jones, and she has a
- 24:20Speaker 2: foundation called ps I Love You, and she takes yoga
- 24:23Speaker 2: into at risk schools and I was teaching yoga in
- 24:26Speaker 2: Watts and there was this wonderful young boy and he
- 24:30Speaker 2: came up to me afterwards and he's like, Missus Bartlett,
- 24:33Speaker 2: which threw me off. I'm like, where's missus Bartlett, where's
- 24:37Speaker 2: my mother in law? But he said, Missus Bartlett, when
- 24:40Speaker 2: I close my eyes, I only see black. And so
- 24:43Speaker 2: I was talking to his teacher and he was medicated
- 24:50Speaker 2: for ADHD and it caused some neurodivergence when he closed
- 24:55Speaker 2: his eyes. So I said, it's a good open your eyes.
- 24:58Speaker 2: And we found they had like the old popcorn ceiling
- 25:02Speaker 2: kind of thing. We found all the little spots on
- 25:04Speaker 2: the ceiling, and I said, all I want you to
- 25:06Speaker 2: do is count the spots. And every time you count,
- 25:09Speaker 2: one breathe one breath, one spot. And that's what we
- 25:13Speaker 2: do in yoga. We give the mind something to chew on,
- 25:17Speaker 2: you know, we call it the monkey mind. Give the
- 25:18Speaker 2: monkey a banana. So whether it's mantra a word like strength, strength,
- 25:27Speaker 2: and just let that roll over and over through the
- 25:29Speaker 2: wheels of your mind, or if we focus more on
- 25:32Speaker 2: the breadth that day, we give you something to do.
- 25:35Speaker 2: Because if I said, hey, Haley, I want you to
- 25:36Speaker 2: sit there and do nothing and think about nothing for
- 25:39Speaker 2: ten minutes. Do you know how hard that is?
- 25:42Speaker 4: Oh, I'd be chomping at the bit in like ten seconds.
- 25:45Speaker 2: No. No, I would give you. I would give you
- 25:48Speaker 2: something to focus on, and I think for you, because
- 25:51Speaker 2: you're you're such an accomplished athlete. I would encourage you
- 25:56Speaker 2: to really think about that inner cylinder and when you inhale,
- 26:00Speaker 2: like feeling the diaphragm and the pelvic floor moved down
- 26:03Speaker 2: when you exhale, allowing it all to move up.
- 26:06Speaker 4: And then when you.
- 26:07Speaker 2: Kind of get like bored with that, then we could
- 26:09Speaker 2: move to the transverse of Dominus and the multividi and
- 26:12Speaker 2: feel that. But I would guide you, and I would
- 26:15Speaker 2: talk to you the whole time, because if I just
- 26:17Speaker 2: left you on your own, I know that your mind
- 26:19Speaker 2: would probably take you in a couple different directions. Not
- 26:23Speaker 2: just you, me too, everybody, because it's the nature of
- 26:26Speaker 2: the mind. The mind is like the computer with all
- 26:28Speaker 2: the tabs open and they're like, ooh, this one, this one,
- 26:31Speaker 2: this one. So in yoga, we just give you one
- 26:33Speaker 2: thing to focus on and it kind of keeps the
- 26:36Speaker 2: mind busy so the body can decompress.
- 26:40Speaker 1: Okay, I have a really tough question that might not
- 26:43Speaker 1: be able to be I'm going to ask it anyways,
- 26:47Speaker 1: So can this help with someone with maybe like OCD
- 26:53Speaker 1: that gets something in their head and it's just like
- 26:55Speaker 1: their mind can't like it just keeps reviewing oh over
- 27:00Speaker 1: and over again, say say say a word or something,
- 27:03Speaker 1: but it's not positive. Can can yogat like help with
- 27:08Speaker 1: that this kind of therapy or is that a totally
- 27:12Speaker 1: different conversation.
- 27:14Speaker 2: It's a little bit out of my scope because I
- 27:16Speaker 2: don't work as much with with folks who have been
- 27:19Speaker 2: diagnosed with OCD, and or at least they don't come
- 27:22Speaker 2: to me revealing that. But what my understanding is is
- 27:26Speaker 2: that there's there's a loop that's kind of like an
- 27:31Speaker 2: old fashioned record, and you get stuck. The needle gets
- 27:33Speaker 2: stuck in the groove, and you got to you got
- 27:36Speaker 2: to move that needle, right. And so with that kind
- 27:38Speaker 2: of person, maybe I'm not going to go into like
- 27:41Speaker 2: repetitive mantra because my goodness that they're already stuck in
- 27:45Speaker 2: that groove. With that person, I'm going to need them
- 27:48Speaker 2: to move and we're going to have to move through
- 27:50Speaker 2: some salutations and just kind of like, get the body
- 27:55Speaker 2: to move so that the mind can move, because again
- 27:57Speaker 2: they're interconnected. So if my mind is going, my body's
- 28:03Speaker 2: probably going, it's constricting. So let's expand the body and
- 28:09Speaker 2: let that mind start to expand as well.
- 28:13Speaker 4: So that goes into everything. One body, one mind.
- 28:15Speaker 3: Yeah, yes, I love that doing so much.
- 28:23Speaker 2: And you influence the people around you. You know, they
- 28:25Speaker 2: can feel your vibe and when you're around someone who
- 28:28Speaker 2: has taken the time to lift their vibration and set
- 28:31Speaker 2: a clear intention, then you feel it. You're like, whoah,
- 28:35Speaker 2: I like this and you'll have a little lift. So
- 28:38Speaker 2: you get to be that for the people around you.
- 28:42Speaker 4: That's great.
- 28:42Speaker 1: So every morning you wake up because I really want
- 28:45Speaker 1: to add something in and I want to do something
- 28:47Speaker 1: that's realistic, and this is you know, this is how
- 28:50Speaker 1: I work with with the women that I work with,
- 28:54Speaker 1: is I'm like, for me, I'm like, okay, going into
- 28:56Speaker 1: an hour meditation session makes me want to like break
- 29:01Speaker 1: out in hives because I'm just like, oh that hour,
- 29:03Speaker 1: I could be doing this and this, but I need
- 29:05Speaker 1: something that I can break it down and focus on
- 29:08Speaker 1: one thing.
- 29:08Speaker 4: So if I had one thing to focus on and
- 29:11Speaker 4: I want it to be intention. So I wake up in.
- 29:15Speaker 1: The morning, I have a few minutes to myself and
- 29:18Speaker 1: I just really like, have that set that intention for
- 29:22Speaker 1: what I'm looking for for that day or let it
- 29:25Speaker 1: come to me.
- 29:26Speaker 2: Yes. So there's a there's a book that came out,
- 29:30Speaker 2: I don't know thirty four years ago, Women Who Run
- 29:33Speaker 2: with Wolves by Clarissa Pincola Estes, And she's originally from
- 29:38Speaker 2: Chicago as well, and the book is in English, but
- 29:41Speaker 2: she's bilingual. And I heard her say one day that
- 29:44Speaker 2: her morning prayer is in signame and that word just
- 29:48Speaker 2: means show me, show me, show me, like reveal to me,
- 29:51Speaker 2: Reveal to me what it is that I'm supposed to
- 29:54Speaker 2: do today, how I can be of service. So if
- 29:56Speaker 2: that resonates with you, you can certainly do that. I'llternatively if
- 30:01Speaker 2: closing your eyes and getting quiet or staying quiet first
- 30:04Speaker 2: thing is like, oh, I totally get it. You can
- 30:08Speaker 2: go outside. I know it can be a little chilly
- 30:10Speaker 2: in Colorado, but if you can just go outside for
- 30:14Speaker 2: a moment and find find an external queue in nature
- 30:19Speaker 2: and breathe and remember like, oh, yeah, I am that
- 30:23Speaker 2: I'm part of nature. I don't have to reconnect with
- 30:26Speaker 2: nature that I am that and how does that show up?
- 30:30Speaker 2: And what is my nature? And how can I show up?
- 30:33Speaker 2: And for you you know, I know we're just meeting,
- 30:36Speaker 2: but I can see and feel your vibe of strength
- 30:39Speaker 2: and service and so to just get real clear about
- 30:43Speaker 2: you know, how does that come through today?
- 30:46Speaker 1: I really like that because it's a different way like
- 30:50Speaker 1: and I don't like this is not my area. So
- 30:53Speaker 1: maybe you're like Heley, that's actually not it at all,
- 30:56Speaker 1: But it seems like there's that that show me, you know,
- 30:59Speaker 1: show me what to do, or like, let me find
- 31:02Speaker 1: that could be found with someone that might like pray
- 31:06Speaker 1: every day or do you know, find that you know,
- 31:12Speaker 1: their own version of prayer. Maybe I don't know how
- 31:15Speaker 1: to articulate it. But we're all seeking for something that
- 31:20Speaker 1: we focus on for that intention.
- 31:24Speaker 2: For the day one hundred percent. And whether you are
- 31:28Speaker 2: religious and you call it God or call it all
- 31:31Speaker 2: that is or Mother nature, or I have a friend
- 31:33Speaker 2: who says life, it becomes a body prayer. For sure.
- 31:39Speaker 3: I have to do this too, because I have felt
- 31:42Speaker 3: extremely out of balance sense having a baby, and my
- 31:48Speaker 3: morning's always started completely different, and for the last year
- 31:52Speaker 3: I felt like it is hitting the ground running and
- 31:55Speaker 3: not having a second And I do feel like that's
- 31:58Speaker 3: one of the things that I think I'm longing for
- 32:03Speaker 3: or have been missing, because when you've been talking, I'm like,
- 32:06Speaker 3: I think that's part of why I feel.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Out of WACKI like out of balance.
- 32:12Speaker 3: It's just not having that moment, even if it is
- 32:14Speaker 3: three minutes, because I'm like Kaylee, even a thirty minute meditation,
- 32:19Speaker 3: it's like the to do list starts going rambling. I'm
- 32:22Speaker 3: four minutes and I'm getting anxiety.
- 32:25Speaker 2: I got to stop.
- 32:26Speaker 3: So I think that resonates with me too, like just
- 32:30Speaker 3: taking a moment, setting an intention, having a word.
- 32:36Speaker 2: It's very much quality over quantity, and if you only
- 32:39Speaker 2: have a couple of minutes, it's totally fine. And you
- 32:42Speaker 2: can also meditate with your baby girl on you, and
- 32:46Speaker 2: you can share the rhythm of your breath and she
- 32:48Speaker 2: will begin to mirror your breathing pattern. You are modeling
- 32:52Speaker 2: that for her, so that can be a really sweet
- 32:55Speaker 2: form of connection.
- 32:58Speaker 4: I love that.
- 32:59Speaker 3: Do you ever recommend to your clients doing it taking
- 33:03Speaker 3: a moment, like even just twice a day, like in
- 33:06Speaker 3: the morning, but in that afternoon period where things feel
- 33:11Speaker 3: like they're getting busy or crazy.
- 33:14Speaker 2: Again, or you've had a heavy day, do.
- 33:17Speaker 3: You just take a moment and kind of try to recenter.
- 33:22Speaker 2: Of course, so we all have if you've gone into
- 33:26Speaker 2: the study of chronotypes and how there's like early birds
- 33:30Speaker 2: and then the folks that like to wake up later,
- 33:32Speaker 2: and we all have different inner rhythms. So for me
- 33:35Speaker 2: it's the first thing in the morning, it's ritual, right,
- 33:37Speaker 2: but for others it might be a little bit later
- 33:39Speaker 2: in the day. And to have a second window to
- 33:42Speaker 2: do it, oh my gosh, y has of course. And
- 33:45Speaker 2: what I do is I give myself an external cueue
- 33:47Speaker 2: throughout the day to remember the word, the thought, the intention.
- 33:52Speaker 2: For me specifically, because I live in our modern world
- 33:55Speaker 2: with technology, it's the cell phone. If I hear the
- 33:58Speaker 2: ding of the text, it reminds me.
- 34:04Speaker 4: So have you do your children and practice this?
- 34:09Speaker 1: And at what age would you would you teach them
- 34:14Speaker 1: in utero?
- 34:16Speaker 2: Yeah, during pregnancy there was so much meditation, but I
- 34:21Speaker 2: was literally between the yoga studio meditating and two blocks
- 34:25Speaker 2: away at golds gym throwing tires. So I love the
- 34:29Speaker 2: balance of both. And my babies grew up on my
- 34:34Speaker 2: yoga mat, you know, and my older son. Now he's
- 34:37Speaker 2: an athlete. He's more into baseball and wrestling, but he
- 34:41Speaker 2: recently had a coach tell him that his hamstrings were
- 34:44Speaker 2: a little bit tight and he should practice some yoga.
- 34:47Speaker 2: So he's like, hey, Mom.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I love that when we can be of benefit to
- 34:55Speaker 1: you know, outside of just mom. Like when my kids
- 34:58Speaker 1: started getting into strength training and they wanted to know
- 35:02Speaker 1: what to do, and they didn't listen to me, but
- 35:04Speaker 1: then all of a sudden one day they were like,
- 35:06Speaker 1: I think my mom knows.
- 35:07Speaker 2: We're just talking right exactly and so so validating that.
- 35:13Speaker 2: It's so funny because like with us and in my career,
- 35:17Speaker 2: I don't feel the need to impress or name drop,
- 35:20Speaker 2: Like if you ask me, I'll tell you openly. But
- 35:24Speaker 2: it isn't like, oh, I worked with this person and
- 35:26Speaker 2: that person, And I find myself with my son getting
- 35:29Speaker 2: a little macho and I'm like, well, I worked with
- 35:31Speaker 2: this NBA player and that boxer. I'm like proving myself
- 35:35Speaker 2: to a sixteen year old.
- 35:36Speaker 4: Oh stop, Well they're the harder ones to please.
- 35:44Speaker 2: Like, hopefully you're impressed now.
- 35:48Speaker 1: So your Total Body Beautiful book is your latest book?
- 35:51Speaker 4: Yes, and talk to us about that.
- 35:56Speaker 2: So perimenopause can begin as early as thirty five years old,
- 36:00Speaker 2: and there can be up to I think now they're
- 36:02Speaker 2: saying like seventy five different manifestations, different symptoms that we
- 36:07Speaker 2: can face. And what I've seen with some of the
- 36:11Speaker 2: some of the different books is it's either like train, Train, Train,
- 36:15Speaker 2: or let's talk about the emotional body. And so we
- 36:18Speaker 2: really wanted to bring this together. So we talk about
- 36:22Speaker 2: mental health, emotional health, and of course physical health. And
- 36:26Speaker 2: I think it can get really overwhelming for folks when
- 36:28Speaker 2: you talk about, you know, what is fitness and then
- 36:31Speaker 2: you're like, Okay, well we've got cardiovascular fitness and muscular
- 36:34Speaker 2: strength and muscular endurance and flexibility, and I lost them
- 36:38Speaker 2: at like number two, right. So what I did was
- 36:42Speaker 2: I got together with two amazing instructors who are experts
- 36:47Speaker 2: in their own fields and strength training and pilates, and
- 36:50Speaker 2: then I'm yoga and we each root to our strengths
- 36:54Speaker 2: and we have workouts where you combine those different formats
- 36:58Speaker 2: and others where it's just the end visual workout. But
- 37:02Speaker 2: again this is done with the intention of like let
- 37:05Speaker 2: us lift you. We came together as women lifting one another,
- 37:10Speaker 2: and we want to lift you and help you through
- 37:12Speaker 2: this period because this period is gnarly, you know, and
- 37:17Speaker 2: we don't talk about it, and we're starting to, Thank goodness,
- 37:20Speaker 2: the conversation is open. But like the more the merrier. Wow.
- 37:24Speaker 4: And when did this book come out?
- 37:27Speaker 2: This book came out twenty twenty two, but we wrote
- 37:30Speaker 2: it in twenty twenty so obviously we had a lot
- 37:33Speaker 2: of time on our hands to collaborate.
- 37:36Speaker 1: To us, that's great. I'm looking forward to reading it.
- 37:41Speaker 1: I mean, that's a beautiful it is. I think when
- 37:44Speaker 1: we bring it and we tie it all all together,
- 37:47Speaker 1: just from what I hear, it's like so confusing for
- 37:51Speaker 1: one of the right, how many of this? And should
- 37:53Speaker 1: I do? And how many of these? And I'm like
- 37:55Speaker 1: it really like, let's not over complicate it. Yes, move
- 37:59Speaker 1: your body, Yes, name and have you lifting have some
- 38:02Speaker 1: of those polarizing where you but everything has a place
- 38:06Speaker 1: that can fit in, especially if it's if it's special
- 38:09Speaker 1: to you and it's important to you. Nobody gets to
- 38:12Speaker 1: say that that gets pushed out for something else exactly.
- 38:17Speaker 2: And I had a trainer back when I was in
- 38:20Speaker 2: la at Golds that I was working with. I was
- 38:22Speaker 2: her client, Joe Ann Lee and I heard someone ask
- 38:26Speaker 2: her one day. They said, hey, Joe, what's the best
- 38:29Speaker 2: form of exercise that there is? And she turned around
- 38:32Speaker 2: and without missing a beat, she said the kind that
- 38:34Speaker 2: you will do and she walked away, and I was like,
- 38:39Speaker 2: drop the wisdom.
- 38:40Speaker 5: I love it, Mike drops done.
- 38:44Speaker 3: One thing I loved that you said at the beginning
- 38:47Speaker 3: was information and educating women going through this time in
- 38:52Speaker 3: our lives makes it a smoother experience. And I think
- 38:57Speaker 3: that that's truly one of the things that Haley and
- 38:59Speaker 3: I are trying to help is giving out information because
- 39:04Speaker 3: even for me, just learning so much from all of
- 39:07Speaker 3: these great experts we have on it does seem a
- 39:10Speaker 3: little bit less daunting or overwhelming. If you have the
- 39:15Speaker 3: knowledge and education just to go through it, it does.
- 39:21Speaker 4: Make it such a smoother experience.
- 39:23Speaker 2: I think I love that you said that. Yeah, I'll
- 39:26Speaker 2: tell you a super quick story. So my sixteen year
- 39:29Speaker 2: old has sex. Said they had two days of sex, said,
- 39:32Speaker 2: one day was for the boys, one day was for
- 39:34Speaker 2: the girls, but they each attended the opposite sex information course.
- 39:39Speaker 2: And he was telling me that the day that it
- 39:43Speaker 2: was dedicated to the girls, the instructor said, to the girls,
- 39:47Speaker 2: what's menopause, Can anyone define it? Silence? My son raised
- 39:53Speaker 2: his hand. He's like, do you mean perimenopause or actual menopause,
- 39:58Speaker 2: which is the twelvemonth day after you haven't had a cycle.
- 40:02Speaker 2: I was like, yes, this is.
- 40:04Speaker 4: A that is a huge mom when Wow, see that
- 40:12Speaker 4: they're learning, they're listening.
- 40:14Speaker 2: He helped me prepare for my oral defense for my
- 40:17Speaker 2: dissertations dissertation thesis, and so he knows all that information
- 40:22Speaker 2: somewhere in his brain.
- 40:24Speaker 4: He's going to be a good husband.
- 40:26Speaker 2: Absolutely. Yes, Amen, Oh.
- 40:29Speaker 5: Michael, I love that.
- 40:30Speaker 1: I'm super excited to read that book and to recommend
- 40:32Speaker 1: that book sounds incredible. With these different I love having
- 40:38Speaker 1: different experts in the exercise arena. I think there's room
- 40:42Speaker 1: for everyone, and they're all so unique and play well
- 40:47Speaker 1: in balance with each other and what we desire and
- 40:51Speaker 1: what we like to do and what our souls need
- 40:54Speaker 1: as long as well as our bodies. So fascinating. In
- 41:00Speaker 1: Poe Dosi, it's so nice to meet you. I really
- 41:02Speaker 1: wish I was meeting you in person.
- 41:04Speaker 2: Me too. Likewise likewise, and of course if you're in Hawaii,
- 41:08Speaker 2: come out over. But I go to the mainland very
- 41:11Speaker 2: often and it's technology is a gift, and I'm so
- 41:15Speaker 2: happy that we're able to connect this way and to
- 41:18Speaker 2: help inspire women around the world. But I also appreciate
- 41:21Speaker 2: that in person contact, and if we ever have the opportunity,
- 41:24Speaker 2: it'll be my honor to meet you both.
- 41:28Speaker 4: Thanks for listening.
