Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: So external review Treasury not good, apparently losing the confidence
- 0:04Speaker 1: of ministers. It's so bad. This is a report hasn't
- 0:07Speaker 1: happened in ten years. We've got one economic advice week,
- 0:11Speaker 1: string of failures, advice on acc deficit health, New Zealand spending,
- 0:16Speaker 1: inter island of fairy replacement, saga. All those get across,
- 0:19Speaker 1: cross cross Cameron bag reformer Treasury economists, independent economist with
- 0:22Speaker 1: us this morning. Cameron, get a good morning. Bad as
- 0:25Speaker 1: it looks.
- 0:27Speaker 2: Oh, it's not great, and I guess the spurt of
- 0:29Speaker 2: the Treasury sort of lost their mojo and good news
- 0:32Speaker 2: is under Ian Rennie that started to get their mojo back.
- 0:35Speaker 2: But treatise to government's lead financial advisor. Your advice is critical.
- 0:40Speaker 2: We need a high perform performing treasury and the report
- 0:43Speaker 2: to sort of highlights haven't been perhaps as high performing
- 0:45Speaker 2: as what we would have liked.
- 0:46Speaker 1: How did it lose its mojo?
- 0:49Speaker 2: Oh? I think a long time. Over a long time,
- 0:52Speaker 2: they've sort of tilted away from flowing economists towards more generalists.
- 0:57Speaker 2: I think there's been a few issues under previous leaders.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Don't get the right leaders of the type type of
- 1:02Speaker 2: tens to pull a threat through the whole organization. I
- 1:05Speaker 2: don't think Treasury has been strong enough with previous ministers.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Good news once again under Ian Rennie, we've seen a
- 1:11Speaker 2: bit of a strategic shift within Treasury. Treasury still advisors
- 1:16Speaker 2: the minister, so you can't exactly get against the minister,
- 1:20Speaker 2: and the Investment Statement has been calling the government to
- 1:23Speaker 2: account as far as you can on key issues such
- 1:26Speaker 2: as physical sustainability such as the operating balance in touches
- 1:29Speaker 2: of quality of government assets in the management.
- 1:31Speaker 1: Of the One of the problems attracting talent if you're
- 1:34Speaker 1: a numbers nerd, is Treasury still a place you want
- 1:36Speaker 1: to go? I think we might have lost Cameron there, Kem,
- 1:39Speaker 1: you're there, Cameron, Yeah, yeah. I'm just saying retaining staff
- 1:45Speaker 1: and attracting new talent as a problem. If you're a
- 1:47Speaker 1: numbers nerd coming out of UNI or coming out into
- 1:49Speaker 1: the private sector into the public sector, is Treasury somewhere
- 1:53Speaker 1: you want to go? Still we're having issues with Cameron
- 1:57Speaker 1: to leave it there. For more familiar edition with Ryan Bridge,
