- 0:08On Thursday, October 5, 1950, the New York Yankees faced the Philadelphia Phillies at
- 0:13Shide Park for Game 2 of the 1950 World Series. The Yankees led the series 1-0 after a two-hit
- 0:19complete game shut out by Vic Rache in Game 1. For Game 2, the Phillies sent their 23-year-old
- 0:25ace, Robin Roberts, to the mound to try to even the series before heading to New York.
- 0:29The Yankees countered with veteran Allie Reynolds. This is a partial audio recording of Game 2 that
- 0:34was edited by the original owner to remove several of the less exciting innings from the nearly
- 0:38three-hour-long game. The broadcast features announcers Mel Allen and Gene Kelly.
- 1:08The Yankees have played a game of the past, but have developed a good curve ball this season and
- 1:12have an amazing change-up, which has held to its effectiveness in winning 20 games.
- 1:16Right-hander delivering 1-1-6. Strike 2 calls. The two strikes have been changed curves.
- 1:23Two ball, one ball, two strikes out. Woodling, left-handed batter, they plan straight away toward left.
- 1:29The infielders' orthodox. It's a beautiful day in Philadelphia. They're all fairly crisp,
- 1:34and the temperature is in the lower 60. Ready to go. 1-2, swinging a foul for the upper deck
- 1:42to the left of Odgerlett microphone, and it still went into with a new ball and strike.
- 1:47One ball, two strikes. There is a larger audience out here than yesterday. There was some touches of
- 1:52feet and lights and less, which blared open, and in wonderment many thought why the place hadn't been
- 1:58so good. I imagine that will top the crowd of 30,000. One ball, two strikes. Quickly into the next
- 2:04pitch. Going, swinging. A slow hit down, ball toward the hole, up with it, Hamner, long throw to first.
- 2:09Not in drive. That ball was slight between third and short. Jones crossed over, and it goes as a base hit,
- 2:16incidentally. Hamner behind. But the ball took a high hop. Hamner then was on his own, and his long
- 2:23throw was not in time. It was low on the dirt, but Woodling is across the back anyway for the leadoff hit.
- 2:28So in the series now, leadoff man Gene Woodling has two hits. He went 1-3 yesterday.
- 2:33With a man on first, an infield single to the shortstop Gene Woodling. Nobody else.
- 2:38Bill Zidow, the Peppelhead shortstop of the New York entry from the American League,
- 2:42that's when he fast-right handed. He was 1-3 in the first game yesterday, hitting a 3-33 in the World Series.
- 2:48Robertson the slow set. Going, the runner-break. He swings on the hit and run. It's a high-pushing pop to the left of the

- 3:17Robertson the slow set. Going, the runner-break. He swings on the hit and run. It's a high-pushing pop to the left of the plate.
- 3:46Robertson the slow set. Going, the runner-break. He swings on the hit and run. It's a high-pushing pop to the left of the plate.
- 4:15Robertson the slow set. Going, the runner-break. He swings on the hit and run. It's a high-pushing pop to the left of the plate.
- 4:44Robertson the slow set. Going, the runner-break. He swings on the hit and run. It's a high-pushing pop to the left of the plate.
- 5:13Robertson the slow set. Going, the runner-break. He swings on the hit and run. It's a high-pushing pop to the left of the plate.
- 5:42That's the first two hard ones that Robbie has delivered.
- 5:50Robertson the slow set. Going, the runner-break. He swings on the hit and run. It's a high-pushing pop to the left of the plate.
- 6:14Several Yankee fans who came down for yesterday's opener remarked that the crowd was so Philadelphia that even the five performance of Racky might have gone unnoticed.
- 6:25But for the fact that those who appreciated the two essence of the struggle, the great jewel which the Yankees won one to nothing, might have been appreciated even more in another ballpark.
- 6:37He's built fans of hot right now and the girls have fought the dragging one behind. Two and two. The third count picks his side armor and it goes upstairs just under the base of the roof and falls into a lucky fan pond along the first phase line.
- 6:51He bobbled it for a moment the crowd drawn and angrily him and he held on. Two and two. Robertson now will go consistently to his right hand-flick.
- 7:02He's got a lot of little nervous habits on the mound and the army enough with thought those to help pace himself. He used to rush to his delivery.
- 7:09He's throwing hard all the time and then with fire and later innings. Two and two. Run as a first and third lead off.
- 7:15Ready for the fifth. Throwing, swinging a twister behind second base. Joliet going back in short right field under.
- 7:21Grabbed it and went out third, shagged up but he doesn't score. So really has cut off my wakers. Woodling has caught off what he says.
- 7:32He had a slide back into third base head first. On a good cutoff, went over. By the field's inner defense on which Joliet went back some 15 feet off the turtle back of the infield on the grass in short right spreader.
- 7:45He threw far the plate and Woodling feeling that the ball would go all the way in. Wraped off about 15 or 20 feet down the third base line.
- 7:54Now the first baseman guarding at the hill cut off the throw but a bit of a delay prevented his throwing Woodling out.
- 8:01In other words if Wakers would have thrown immediately he thought John Woodling would have been a gone guysling.
- 8:06He threw safe wiances on the ball from Wakers to Woodley John's third base.
- 8:15So that means coming out now, going out to second baseman. Having engineered the second put off.
- 8:22And the batter is John Lies swinging left handed. Always dangerous up there. Went hit with yesterday, running left handed.
- 8:29Robert Gulliboy, my truck, a 15 foot to the left of the plate. Seminix goes away the mad. Just under. Grabbed it.
- 8:36My truck stopped for the catcher Andy Seminix and the Yankees are required to slide the threat.
- 8:41It was a foul clock with no runs. A pair of cringles by Woodling and Yelgi Berra. No field burrows and the aforementioned left off.
- 8:51So at the end of the Yankees half of the first, visiting Philadelphia in the 1950 World Series. New York nothing, the Phillies nothing.
- 8:59Bumbles are costly in baseball and in a manner of speaking and shaving too. For instance dropping your razor is after knocking out of alignment and ruining its shaving performance.
- 9:10If this has happened to your razor and you're having trouble shaving comfortably, by all means get a Gillette super speed razor.
- 9:17In fact men, unless you are using a modern Gillette 1 piece razor, such as this, you have no idea how convenient and refreshing shaving can be.
- 9:26The Gillette super speed razor gives you the best looking, most comfortable skates the fellow can have. Also it changes blades instantly, cleans instantly and never jams or clogs.
- 9:38It comes in a Hanson's Dyrion travel case with a handy Gillette dispenser containing 10 factory charged Gillette blue blades. A $1.75 ideal for only a dollar.
- 9:49Ask for a Gillette super speed razor set at any convenient store.
- 9:58Well, some frills on the top of the first. Lead off man Woodling, got one sort of short shot for an infield hit.
- 10:05And then always double some hit and runner, was good all, was a fine butter, fouled out, the Seminix and Behras, trumped one to left.
- 10:13Spectus League style. The Maggio popped out to Goliath and only a small relay prevented a dollar's way.
- 10:19And then the big cat John Lye fouled out to the gadget. So all we had a 30th building for a swimming, and which others came to the floor much in the manner of Consetti at the 30th yesterday.
- 10:29Now big teeth out of the rentals. Up on the mound. So with right hander facing the lead off man for the Fubi Placus.
- 10:3512 strike one on the first pitch. Gone about Belvry on the inside corner.
- 10:41Placus was one of the three men to reach base off Racky yesterday. He drew a pass.
- 10:47Nothing won. Curve is good for 12 strike two.
- 10:52Charlie Barry, fouled by Briss, is a pencil-angent and was a great football player at Lafayette.
- 10:59Really waits no time in calling those strikes down there. A majestic wave of his right arm. And it strikes two. Nothing in two.
- 11:07It's swinging. A ground ball, slapped the Coleman at second. How about it? Go to first and try. One away.
- 11:23Second to first to play. One down.
- 11:28Now Racky Attrest, he played on fire, incidentally, is not Terry. It is Bill McGowan, veteran Bill McGowan of the American League.
- 11:34Terry is on his second base. Barger to first. And John Cole Conlon, who called him yesterday.
- 11:39And his fight as injury is out here again today as a third.
- 11:42Barlich and McKinley baseline on fire. Here's Attrest, cutting up headed.
- 11:48Reynolds throws him high around the skin inside, ball one.
- 11:53Attrest went hitless in fourth pitch yesterday. And on the season in 1950, that is three or three for the Phillies.
- 12:01Take the strike.
- 12:05Fastball.
- 12:07Bianchi and Thiel is no different than the way the National League plays at Asperger. It is moved in, particularly on the left side.
- 12:13They are always looking for the possible run of 10 by this fellow.
- 12:17So he starts to run like the wind. One on one. Hitting. Right to call. That was a beauty.
- 12:26You'll note that the early banners of the Phillies are taking Reynolds a great money pitcher.
- 12:34Has been a true champion with a gift down. Into the motion now on one and two.
- 12:38Delivering, swinging. A line drive, going foul in the field.
- 12:50We are told that Reynolds has so much natural stuff in his deliveries that he has had a tendency toward wildness in the past.
- 12:57And there's the reason why the take has been on so early.
- 13:03Of all two strikes. One gone. Everybody on. Last of the first no score.
- 13:09Is it all moving in the shortstop.
- 13:14And now the one two-fifth coming up. Going swinging. A twisting foul to the left of the plate.
- 13:20Giving it a try. Farah getting under. But no. It falls into the sand just to our right.
- 13:26Now there is an important physical element in the construction of this fall play.
- 13:32In foul territory the upper sand seats jut out just so much that even if they were skimmed past the upper guard rails,
- 13:40the catcher would still have a fighting chance. But sometimes an unknowing fan will reach out and go for the souvenir.
- 13:47On a ball that ostensibly might have been caught by the catcher. And there was another one.
- 13:52It went in however. And of course the twisting foul before caught by Seminick was one.
- 13:56Again one and two. Outside. Two and two.
- 14:01Reynolds already has the trade. A crackling curve ball. And an explosive fastball.
- 14:07He's the same type figure in the general category of racquies.
- 14:11He picked so excellently yesterday. Even up two and two.
- 14:16The big one. Swinging. A twist to the right side of the field.
- 14:19Moving in on the ball is Farah. Running, running, running. And falling down.
- 14:23There's actually a hit in the second base. He's in there.
- 14:31He'll give him a double on that. Farah made a great try for the two strings.
- 14:37He ran for all he was worth to his all right. And it all dropped in there off the heel of his club.
- 14:45Rolling away. He wasted no time regaining his balance and running for it.
- 14:49But it starts the fleet after and had a stand-up double for the ease.
- 14:53That is the first excavated in the World Series for the release.
- 14:59A runner on at second base. And a humpback line double toward right center.
- 15:06And the runner is Vic Stisler.
- 15:09Who of course, you'll recall, was stuck out for the final put-out in yesterday's ball game.
- 15:15All for four in the World Series. Fighting left handed.
- 15:19And he'll throw in Vic Stisler high and try. For what?
- 15:23There was much made in the early part of the season in both leagues about the ball rules.
- 15:28I know that the American League knocked it off quickly or at least didn't call it.
- 15:32And the National League eventually didn't call it as often as it had in the first month of the season.
- 15:37I make that point because Reynolds is a quick motion pitcher. He has a tremendous motion.
- 15:44Want to know, Antsburn leading off second.
- 15:47Outside. Wall two. The slow curve.
- 15:54Big alley Reynolds. Camtenor who originally was secured from Cleveland by the Yankees.
- 16:01He infielded Schipter's ball to right. Residual is very close to the back as a short step near second base.
- 16:07Coleman is deep in a second base ball as is Mize at first.
- 16:11Brown orthodox. Reynolds in the slow stretch. Two-and-nothing. He pitches.
- 16:15A change outside. Wall three.
- 16:21At first he fills out his rampant. They know that winning the first game is also important in a short series.
- 16:28And they feel that if their favorites could move into the stadium, even up, they could bring the series back to Guy Park.
- 16:35That remains to be seen boys and girls. We've got a long ball game. This is the first inning.
- 16:40Antsburn 15 foot lead off the back. Pitch for Stisler. Second call.
- 16:45But three and all in this instance was automatic.
- 16:49Stake was on the first. Early in the game.
- 16:52Sawyer the manager coaching a third. And Dusty Cook a formerly Yankee himself coaching a first for the Phillies.
- 17:00Three ball one strike out. The cripple coming up. Reynolds stretches. Steps off. Stake, Stas, Burns, Dines of the Bag.
- 17:09And naturally as most fans will do in any ball park, during real box.
- 17:17Ramon working. Pitching. Swinging method. Strike two.
- 17:29This fellow Stisler had his real awkward moment early in the season.
- 17:35You know he broke into the plate as an outfielder and a miner. Then was converted to a first baseman or the Cardinals.
- 17:41First base last year with the Phillies and left field this season.
- 17:46No count. Let's watch the winner. The first is open and there's one away.
- 17:51The big pitch. He swings the middle. He's stuck him out on a high fastball.
- 17:55Stone inside. Stone tight.
- 17:58So Stisler, who was the final out, via the strikeout route yesterday, went for a takeoff fastball that was really live and guarding in there.
- 18:08And there were two gone for the Phillies and the last of the first.
- 18:19Now Del Innis. The blacksmith as his teammate's clubber.
- 18:25Starting right handed. He liked most of the other fills and Yanks went hit with yesterday.
- 18:32He got three times and in the regular season, about a 3-13. Reynolds throws. Del takes outside on a slow curve ball once.
- 18:41Yogi Berra. One question of lead at a masterful job in handling Rashi yesterday.
- 18:47Thus far catching Reynolds in that good old fashioned rock and chair.
- 18:52Impatiently leading off second base. The fleet Richie Ashburn.
- 18:57And now after Bowers brand effort in an effort to choose fingers.
- 19:02One and O. Pitching. Right one ball. Overhand chair ball. Delivered at medium speed.
- 19:11Caught the letters on the inside. Outfield pulled toward the left.
- 19:15Infield deep toward the left. This fellow can ready to rock at the ball.
- 19:19Caught left and left center. And of course led the National League and out of the eyes with 126.
- 19:26The wind is blowing in slightly from left and left center.
- 19:31The fifth. South off. High honorific along the first base line.
- 19:35Right two. New ball in play. Berra. Make sure that his picture will take his good old time.
- 19:42And after getting the new ball from Empire McGowan. Walks out in front of a plate and tosses it back to Big Alley.
- 19:50No score. Last of the first. Both teams now have presented a threat. The Yankees have two arms.
- 19:56And the Phillies have had Ashburn on since one away. There were two gone now.
- 20:00And the Count on an X1 and two. And those peers forward put a big sign.
- 20:07The big pitch coming up. In the fetch. Going. Swinging. A half flung on foul.
- 20:12Going to a lot of photographers that should have run along the first base line and out of play.
- 20:17Not that it means too much. But we know today that there have been more foul balls toward the stands than there were in yesterday's game.
- 20:25The temperature is about the same. But the sun has been out. And blazing the Count all day long.
- 20:32It's a beautiful day for ball games. One and two.
- 20:38And it. Even the box. Swinging impatiently. And it'll set. Delivering.
- 20:44A side-on curve that never found its mark. It went way inside. The square of the Count even up a 2-2.
- 20:52You'll be hearing us talk about a similar pitch by Roberts for Sassanone.
- 20:56It's a cross-up pitch. He came inside on trying to drive him away.
- 21:02So it's two and two. Two gone and a man on a second.
- 21:06The right hander sets. Sowing. High inside. Ball free.
- 21:13Now for the second man in a row. Alley Reynolds has run the Count's ball. The swing has run out.
- 21:19And he pulled the swing toward on Sussler by Fanningbiss. On a high inside passball.
- 21:25He is three and two through Del Ennis. The field's leading slugger.
- 21:29With a runner in scoring position at second base. And two gone.
- 21:33The big pitch. He's goes. He swings and sends a chopping ground ball behind the mound.
- 21:38The ball goes over on the grass. Goes to first. In time. A good play and a long stretch by the big catch on Lise.
- 21:45And under now Coleman had to make that so flat footed. And more or less couldn't get full power behind it.
- 21:50But he threw him out by a stride and the stride is retired. And it's going down second to first.
- 21:55So in the first frame for the Phillies. No runs. One hit. A double by Ashburn.
- 22:00No errors by the Yankees. And one man Ashburn left on.
- 22:04At the end of the first. The Yankees nothing. The Phillies nothing.
- 22:12Coleman had a run right behind the bag on that play. And what for the fact that Sauer
- 22:17witnessed the ball going off the heel of his glove. And trying to shoot the thing Ashburn hit.
- 22:23To right center. That's just been about the outstanding play thus far.
- 22:27That's through the middle hole. That's where they usually go for base hits.
- 22:31And when Ennis is at the base powering that ball. There's a lot of spin on it.
- 22:36So credit Coleman with the fact that he was fairly close to the bag but did make an excellent play.
- 22:40And Mice who we talked with this morning. About yesterday's fine play by Johnny Hopps.
- 22:47Really put the infim on that one. He's stretched for all he was worth. He had to go all and stop.
- 22:52So a truller for sinning. And it looks like another bandy today.
- 22:57Both teams are peppery. The initial game never says if there was any at all.
- 23:02Seems to have worn off. Let's call it similar to heavyweight.
- 23:07Barring for the first round. And the Yankees out pointing the field by one yesterday.
- 23:11Now to the top of the second. And Bobby Brown left handed batter who had the big double.
- 23:17Standing in. Roberts was close to her. There's ball one.
- 23:21Brown double with Tim. Inside the line. Down toward left field.
- 23:27After Conscanti had thrown a slider.
- 23:29Manufacturer Conscanti was kind of amazed that the slider didn't pull Brown.
- 23:34He uses a choke grip. Open stance deep in the box. One and all. Taking roll.
- 23:40Ball two. Many Yankees fans have asked me about Roberts's feet.
- 23:47He's closely capable of throwing one of the fastest balls in the game today.
- 23:52He was fastballing the opposition to death in the first quarter.
- 23:56And then as they got wiser he changed a lot. Curved a lot.
- 24:00And he hasn't thrown too many hard ones thus far.
- 24:03Two and a half. Jones-Callow at third on Brown.
- 24:06Ball three. Too close.
- 24:08Behind Brown the Yankees will offer up Yankees power.
- 24:12Second base in right field. And second base in Gary Coleman.
- 24:18No one man in yesterday's game got more than one hit for himself.
- 24:22But Brown's double. Was the big blow in the fourth inning.
- 24:25He is now three and all. Here he comes.
- 24:28Frank Wengal.
- 24:31Robbie had a bit of a wrinkle on that one.
- 24:33He complains to Brown about the call.
- 24:36He's pretty good.
- 24:43Sprayin' one.
- 24:47No score. Top of the second. First man up for the Yankees.
- 24:50Third base in Bobby Brown.
- 24:54Now the couple bits.
- 24:56Swinging a line drive for center. Ashburn moving in. Get this.
- 25:01Swinging up. As it was drilled for left center field.
- 25:06And Ashburn caught it on a charge in run.
- 25:09One away. Give it to the center field of Ashburn.
- 25:19Now Hank Bauer. His two fine catches in right field yesterday.
- 25:23Helped save the afternoon for the Yankees.
- 25:25One was off the bat of shortstop Hammer and the other pinch hitter Whitman.
- 25:29He thought that Whitman was going to position.
- 25:31Adding right handed. A pitch to him.
- 25:33Slung on and up high along the third base line.
- 25:35Going foul. Jones falling forward.
- 25:37Under it. Squeezes it.
- 25:39Two gone. Not many pitches being wasted thus far.
- 25:43Ah there. Two men out.
- 25:48Roberts apparently is getting his fastball where he wants it.
- 25:51Or you'll find that if you're keeping score.
- 25:53Rizzo, Miles and Bauer have all fouled out.
- 25:58Gary Coleman. Glendor, second base line.
- 26:00And perhaps one of the most underrated performance in the game today.
- 26:03He ran into a mid-season slump but pulled out of it.
- 26:06And it's been a full walk on defense.
- 26:08That's right handed.
- 26:10Roberts goes. Coleman takes the strike one ball.
- 26:13Fastball.
- 26:14Speaking of fastball. One of the finest in the game.
- 26:18Kirk Simmons was exhibiting his today.
- 26:20He's on 10 day leave you know.
- 26:22From the Army. And with the thing the world series.
- 26:25Ineligible for play of course.
- 26:27And again one.
- 26:29Growing high and wide.
- 26:31Ball one.
- 26:35Coleman uses a choke grip.
- 26:37The throwback of course.
- 26:39For the old days.
- 26:41And a lot of Yankee fans of course.
- 26:44Wondered when these fellow players came up.
- 26:46They usually hit that long ball.
- 26:47Dog in. Held about long.
- 26:49Straight away hitter.
- 26:50One on one.
- 26:52Right through ball.
- 26:54A lot of high outside corner fastball.
- 27:01Many fans in San Francisco California today.
- 27:04Routing on a couple of their favorites.
- 27:06For the Yankees. Brown.
- 27:07And Coleman who's up there right now.
- 27:09You might call Coleman a left handed type brown hitter.
- 27:12One and two.
- 27:14Right on pitch.
- 27:15Sound off.
- 27:17Just beyond the screen to the right.
- 27:18Along the first baseline.
- 27:19And on the fly.
- 27:21And Coleman lost his bat.
- 27:26Of course number one.
- 27:28First go citizen in baseball.
- 27:29San Francisco that is.
- 27:31Pardon me.
- 27:32Mr. DiMaggio.
- 27:35I don't know whether he would be the mayor.
- 27:37And Dominic would be the assistant mayor.
- 27:40First Dominic had a great season with a red spot.
- 27:43One and two.
- 27:46Two gone.
- 27:47Right on pitch.
- 27:49And on the left side.
- 27:51Of all two.
- 27:53Melon I was talking about that side on delivery of Robert Seuss before the game.
- 27:56He invariably uses it on nothing and took out.
- 27:59And just began mastering it.
- 28:01At the end of the season.
- 28:02It has a bit of a wrinkle on it.
- 28:04Right before the hitter off.
- 28:05Quick on pitch.
- 28:07Taking high.
- 28:08Around the eyes.
- 28:09Inside.
- 28:10All three.
- 28:11Three and two.
- 28:12Of course filled fans will tell you this.
- 28:15After Robert Seuss commended performance against the Dodgers on Sunday.
- 28:18Where Emma filled the points for Venice.
- 28:20They couldn't expect much more from the chunky right handers.
- 28:25Three and two.
- 28:27Full count.
- 28:28Spring runs out.
- 28:29He throws.
- 28:30He takes.
- 28:31Ball four.
- 28:32He was about to fight.
- 28:33Had an ocean check himself.
- 28:35And it's all one takes to walk.
- 28:38Draw in the ball game.
- 28:39The first base on balls.
- 28:41Logan Staddy.
- 28:42Class four yesterday.
- 28:45The Yankees will tell you.
- 28:47That his control wasn't that bad.
- 28:50One of the four pieces of free transportation was intentional to the Margio on the third.
- 28:57And he gave up two to Woodling and another one to Joel.
- 29:01Now Ali Reynolds.
- 29:03Batting right at it.
- 29:06As the hitter in the season was 185.
- 29:0815 for 81.
- 29:09Hitch to him.
- 29:10Line towards right.
- 29:11In there for a base hit.
- 29:12Maybe more.
- 29:13And it's running toward the line.
- 29:15Reynolds centers five with a single.
- 29:16But easily.
- 29:17Count that third.
- 29:18Is Jerry Coleman.
- 29:20He's back away to hit for right.
- 29:22And hold it on a line to right.
- 29:24And it's had a run well to the line to prevent Reynolds from going any further.
- 29:29That is the third New York hit.
- 29:31There is no score.
- 29:32This was the top of the second.
- 29:33But the Yankees.
- 29:34For the second inning running.
- 29:35Have two men on at first and third.
- 29:38Coleman on the back at third for the moment.
- 29:43Reynolds doesn't call for his warm up.
- 29:45Jacket that was kind of chilly.
- 29:47And lead off man Woodling who got the first hit.
- 29:49As lead off man.
- 29:51In the first inning.
- 29:53Butting left handers.
- 29:54Slinges on the curve.
- 29:55There's a zippering foul.
- 29:57To the upper stand in right field.
- 29:59That was really cold.
- 30:00And it didn't go foul by very much.
- 30:02As a matter of fact was hit with such.
- 30:04Preciousness.
- 30:06That it's just off a fan body out there.
- 30:09And went.
- 30:10Over into 20th Street here in Philadelphia.
- 30:13That's right field territory.
- 30:15That was about as close for a home runner.
- 30:17It was fine.
- 30:18Not far enough serious.
- 30:30Long strike one.
- 30:32Runner's on at first and third.
- 30:34Two gone.
- 30:35Robert's close strike.
- 30:36The livery.
- 30:37Ball one.
- 30:38Two high.
- 30:39Test ball.
- 30:41Woodling has played shift left in the outfield.
- 30:44Pistler and left has moved ahead of the.
- 30:47Match that is created by left fielders.
- 30:49In both leagues you see this is.
- 30:51Originally the Philadelphia American League Park.
- 30:53One on one.
- 30:55Pitching.
- 30:56Swinging.
- 30:57A push-pink foul right below our Gillette microphone.
- 31:01Right through.
- 31:02We're about three decks up.
- 31:03And I should say a good 75 feet in the air.
- 31:06Looking down.
- 31:08Up on this classic.
- 31:14Reynolds on at first for the single.
- 31:16And he in turn.
- 31:17Moves Coleman around a third after Jerry had walked on three two-picks.
- 31:21With two men down.
- 31:23No score.
- 31:24Top of the second.
- 31:26One and two to count.
- 31:28Robert's catchers deliver.
- 31:29Three high and inside.
- 31:31Ball two.
- 31:33And there again.
- 31:34Roberts goes to his fans legs first the left and the right.
- 31:38Rushing off his palm all the while.
- 31:41Even up two and two.
- 31:43Delivering.
- 31:44Swinging.
- 31:45A ground ball hit too deep short.
- 31:47Go to second not on time to run scores.
- 31:53It goes as a single and the Yankees lead one to nothing.
- 31:57So early in the game Woodling is the batting hero.
- 32:00This single was very similar to the first one he got.
- 32:04Except that the ball stayed in the air longer and finally dipped down on deep shortstop turf.
- 32:10Jones leaped in front of the ball.
- 32:12Partially blocking the view of Hamner who had no play at first for the ball was 2D for him.
- 32:16He leaped in the air as a quarterback will when he passes a football and threw toward Goliad at second.
- 32:21But it was too late and the run came across.
- 32:23Woodling at first Reynolds at second.
- 32:24The Yankees lead one to nothing.
- 32:27And the batter Phil Residore all for one.
- 32:29Roberts delivers.
- 32:31Phil takes outside ball one.
- 32:33On this battle you've got to really thread the needle.
- 32:37There just isn't much to throw to.
- 32:39And he stands right away from the plate to even cross you up more when you're on that mound.
- 32:45One and oh.
- 32:47The pitch.
- 32:48Slow curve outside ball two.
- 32:51Now the hurry call goes to the ball pen and again Church of the Phillies starts warming up.
- 32:58Two ball no strikeout.
- 33:00Two men gone Yankees still have runners at first and second.
- 33:03Woodling at first Reynolds at second.
- 33:07Two gone all of this has happened with two men away.
- 33:11Double the second one to nothing Yankees.
- 33:13Roberts said now delivering strike one ball.
- 33:18Pipping fastball.
- 33:20What a high.
- 33:22Two and one.
- 33:26And the Yankees gets the first RBI of the game of course on that single of his.
- 33:31One counter residual.
- 33:33The pitch.
- 33:35Back to lay by ball three.
- 33:38Fast in around the chin.
- 33:54Now three and one.
- 33:56One is laid off.
- 33:58Roberts said for the big one delivers swinging a high fly.
- 34:00But to the short center field.
- 34:02Ashburn moving in under the ball takes his time.
- 34:04Gramps for the put out.
- 34:06Yankees are retired as his little fries out the short center.
- 34:10So in the second four New York the first run of the game.
- 34:14On a walk to Coleman and singles to Reynolds and Woodling the latter batting home the run.
- 34:19No errors by the Phillies and two Yankees left on.
- 34:22One half innings.
- 34:24New York one.
- 34:25The Phillies nothing.
- 34:28Mickey Vernon.
- 34:29Stavish first baseman for the Washington Senators.
- 34:32Tells me that he sees more ball players using Gillette blue blades than all other kinds put together.
- 34:37How do you account for that Mickey?
- 34:39I'd say it's because Gillette blue blades outshave other blades.
- 34:43You mean they give easier and better looking shades.
- 34:45Yes.
- 34:46And last longer too.
- 34:47Any other reason?
- 34:49Never let you down no matter where you buy a package.
- 34:52Every blade is sharp and easy shaving.
- 34:54Fans ask for Gillette blue blades and the modern Gillette dispenser.
- 34:58This handy magazine zips them out unwrapped ready for use.
- 35:02And has a built in compartment for the safest disposal of used blades.
- 35:06You pay just the price of the blades alone.
- 35:0849 cents for 10.
- 35:1098 cents for 20.
- 35:12Look sharp.
- 35:14Feel sharp.
- 35:15Be sharp.
- 35:16Use Gillette blue blades.
- 35:18For the sharpest edges ever haul.
- 35:24For the filled half of the second inning.
- 35:26Both teams have fretted.
- 35:28Both teams have already shown that they're going to hit the ball perhaps a little bit better than they did yesterday.
- 35:34And as Willie Jones prepares to step in, let's pause 10 seconds for station identification.
- 35:39This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 35:57Today the Coleman-Woodling combination has helped score the first New York run.
- 36:02Here is Willie Jones.
- 36:04He got one of the hits yesterday.
- 36:06He takes a fast strike one.
- 36:09He and Semonix got one hit a piece of big rashie.
- 36:14And it came in the same inning.
- 36:16The fifth.
- 36:17And the other man to reach base of course with weight goes on a walk.
- 36:23Big wind up, alley throws.
- 36:25Wide and high on a medium curve ball.
- 36:27One ball, one strike.
- 36:28Nobody on, nobody out.
- 36:29Last of the second.
- 36:30Jones to be followed by shortstop Granny Hamner and catcher Andy Semonix.
- 36:34Jones deep in the box with an open stance.
- 36:36A big six footer for North Carolina.
- 36:38One on one.
- 36:40Swinging missing.
- 36:42Strike two.
- 36:46Cause every batter will tell you he likes to hit a fast ball.
- 36:49But the way Mr. Rashi and Mr. Reynolds have pumped them in there in the last couple of days,
- 36:53they must be faster than fast.
- 36:58One on two, throwing, swinging, a slow hit foul bounced off the plate to the left.
- 37:02He changed on Jones and put a wrinkle on it.
- 37:05It's still one and two.
- 37:06New ball and play.
- 37:08Big number 22, Allie Reynolds.
- 37:12His effectiveness increased in leaps and bounds after he changed scenery several seasons ago.
- 37:18The big chief was with the Indians.
- 37:23Jim Turner helped him, pitching coach of the Anx and of course the new skipper Casey Stengel.
- 37:28Now ready for one and two, pitching to Woody Jones.
- 37:30Swinging a foul, upstairs, way over the roof along the first baseline and out of five.
- 37:35Brown walks out slowly as he characteristically does and whips the ball back to the mound.
- 37:40Score once and nothing, Bianchi's over the fields.
- 37:43And of course that was the final tally in the opener here yesterday.
- 37:47The series moves on to the stadium in New York tomorrow.
- 37:53For a possible three games.
- 37:55One ball to Stikes.
- 37:57Our field pulls through the left on Jones.
- 38:00Reynolds set, kicks, delivers.
- 38:03Strike three, what a curveball that was.
- 38:07That thing came up there just as big as a grapefruit and dipped away.
- 38:11And Jones took it for a call strike three.
- 38:16One down and a second strikeout of the ball game registered by Allie Reynolds.
- 38:20I'm going to have to ask Mel about that curveball.
- 38:22That looked almost as good as a Constanti slider, Mel.
- 38:25Here's Daddy Hunter.
- 38:27Now tell you one thing, he's got one of the best curveballs in the American League.
- 38:30Here's Hunter.
- 38:32High inside.
- 38:37He proved it that time, Mel.
- 38:40Jones is supposed to be a very good curveball hitter.
- 38:43One time he was a very good curveball hitter.
- 38:45He was a very good curveball hitter.
- 38:47Jones is supposed to be a very good curveball hitter.
- 38:50One ball, no strikeout on Hunter.
- 38:52He went hitless yesterday, batting right handed.
- 38:56Ball two is a cross fire pitch thrown overhand, missing outside.
- 39:03Rane from Richmond, Virginia, went all for three yesterday.
- 39:06Twenty-three year old, right handed batting shortstop.
- 39:11Two and a, one down, nobody on.
- 39:13Last of the second, Yankees lead, one to nothing.
- 39:16In the motion, firing, swinging.
- 39:18A line drive to right center field.
- 39:20In there for base hit, maybe more.
- 39:22Hunter rounding first base, cutting for second.
- 39:24The match goes, catching up with a ball, near the wall, in right center.
- 39:26And Hunter's going to try for three.
- 39:28The wheel gets away from Cohen, and he's in there.
- 39:42That'll go on as a free base hit.
- 39:44The ball was hit on a dead line, 390 feet away from home plate.
- 39:49The weather scoreboard is here at Chi Park.
- 39:52DiMaggio plated off the boards, and has really got away from Cohen.
- 39:55But then, while the ball was in midair from center field,
- 39:58to the second base been Cohen, who was out on the grass some 30 feet,
- 40:02Hunter decided to try for three, and slid in safely with plenty of room to spare.
- 40:08That is the longest extra base hit thus far, early in the World Series.
- 40:13So the fields have posted a runner at third.
- 40:23Incidentally, that's the furthest any field runner has gotten in the series.
- 40:27The single just today, netted a man at second.
- 40:29Jones at the Seminix at single.
- 40:31Here is Seminix.
- 40:32We got one of the two hits.
- 40:33Swinging a foul, back on the screen.
- 40:36The field's ball club, which had not been known as a heavy offensive type game,
- 40:43finally witnesses the fact that they too will join in the festivities.
- 40:48The Yankees lead, one to nothing, but of course the tying run is on a third with one man out.
- 40:53Jones called out on strikes.
- 40:56Hunter hands on hips, put a two off the bag, Reynolds into the full motion,
- 41:04going, swinging, missing.
- 41:06This of course is the key man.
- 41:09A low percentage hitter is coming up next, Goliath.
- 41:12On the season, Seminix had hit 288 for 1950 with 24 home runs.
- 41:19Infield, a play at the plate.
- 41:24Reynolds takes a lot of time, he's ahead.
- 41:26One down.
- 41:29And a move.
- 41:30Pitching.
- 41:32Inside low on a whipping fastball, ball one.
- 41:37Goliath really pumped through the hard one that time.
- 41:41Outfield, shifted left, Seminix long ball hitter.
- 41:46Wind right now, blowing in from left field.
- 41:51Seminix right handed batter.
- 41:55One and two.
- 41:57A pitch, high, ball two.
- 42:00The ball almost got away from chunky Yogi Berra.
- 42:03Only stretches five feet eight and a half inches high,
- 42:06so he had to climb the ladder for that one.
- 42:08It was a curve that never cut off,
- 42:12blowing away from a right handed batter, and Seminix had a duck under it.
- 42:19S-E-M-I-N-I-C-K, Seminix.
- 42:22Even up two ball, two strikeouts.
- 42:24One and a third, Hemner on his triple, one down.
- 42:27Now the big pitch, swinging a foul.
- 42:31Upstairs, right behind the plate and out of play.
- 42:34Still two and two.
- 42:37Berra rips up the new ball and rips it out to Big Reynolds.
- 42:42Most of Oklahoma I should imagine today is trying to root this big fellow home.
- 42:46He goes to the Rodin.
- 42:49Last of the second.
- 42:51Bills have a threat going here with a run at a third and one down.
- 42:55Seminix and Reynolds in a big battle.
- 42:57Two and two.
- 42:58Series of foul balls.
- 43:00Crowd starts at two other Mickey Plaws in the background,
- 43:03pounding feet upon concrete.
- 43:05That all takes time to knot on the side.
- 43:08And the big motion.
- 43:09The pitch, high, ball three.
- 43:14Trying to change up on that one.
- 43:16The curve ball, and again it blew up just as the previous pitch had.
- 43:29Three ball, two strikeouts.
- 43:31Now the Reynolds falls around at the rubber a little bit.
- 43:34Big pitch now.
- 43:36The third man he's run full count on.
- 43:39Hammer, leading off third and field to joke shadow right behind the grass.
- 43:44In the lineup, showing, swinging, along five ball, he's going left here.
- 43:48It is foul, foul.
- 43:52That was it with all the power in Seminix's compact body.
- 43:56And for a moment, gave the fans a tremendous thrill here.
- 43:59There have not been any home runs thus far.
- 44:01But it blew off some 20 feet fouls to the upper deck in left field.
- 44:11Seminix has an odd way of hitting the long ball.
- 44:14He'll back up just a bit on the pitch.
- 44:17But he has such tremendous power in the trunk of his body.
- 44:21But he's called a little Atlas of the National League.
- 44:24So it's still three and two.
- 44:32That's about the closest to home on the field to pass.
- 44:35Reynolds shakes off once, twice.
- 44:37God's on the third.
- 44:39Again, three and two pitch.
- 44:41Swinging, a ground ball, slapped the Coleman.
- 44:43He checks the runner at third, throws the first for the put out.
- 44:45And Hammer has to hold.
- 44:47Nobody scores.
- 44:48So the first time on the three and two, apparently Reynolds has thrown something fat.
- 44:53The second time, he got Seminix to go for a high outside pitch, forcing Addy to chop out to Coleman at second base.
- 45:00Holding the runner at third, and still two down.
- 45:04John Mike Gullia, who put in a bit with a long ball yesterday,
- 45:08sending Woodling back to the gravel protectory in left field.
- 45:12About five to seven feet shy for the distance.
- 45:16The young second baseman of the Phillies was over three in the first game.
- 45:22Yet, with a runner at third, and two gone.
- 45:25A long second inning.
- 45:27Bianchi's leading one to nothing.
- 45:29Gullia batting right handed.
- 45:30Swinging, a line drive for Center.
- 45:32DeMargio moving in, Hunter makes it.
- 45:34The inning is over.
- 45:36Reynolds comes to the floor with a chips down, and leads Verona.
- 45:39And leads Verona stranded at third.
- 45:41Final out to DeMargio and Center.
- 45:43Well, the Phillies, no runs, one hit, a big triple by Hunter.
- 45:47No errors by New York, and Hunter left stranded at third.
- 45:51At the end of two, New York, one run, four hits, no errors, four left.
- 45:57The Phillies, no runs, two hits, no errors, and two men left on.
- 46:07The hitters today are not exactly having a field day,
- 46:11but they are giving evidence of meeting the ball more subtly.
- 46:15The soaring line drives, either for put outs or fouls,
- 46:19such as was the case once with Woodling in right, and Semonik in left,
- 46:23have been hitting that ball crisply.
- 46:29We have representatives during the World Series that you ordinarily wouldn't see
- 46:33at any other sports classic.
- 46:35I know today, Mel and myself are talking with President Tommy Richardson
- 46:39of Florence Rowland, but one time was a manager and an umpire in the Major Leagues.
- 46:43And is now President of the Pacific Coast League, and who naturally is anxious
- 46:47at some time in the future to have his circuit in the Major Leagues.
- 46:52Many of the men today were talking about the predictions made recently
- 46:55in a magazine article by Branch Rickey about there being as many as four Major Leagues.
- 46:59But right now, the World Series is two leagues,
- 47:03and these two teams battle it out here on the Diamond.
- 47:05Here is Yogi Berra, out of the third, swings hard and gets a foul
- 47:10ticked off on the umpire's chest protector, Strike One.
- 47:16The only bullpen activity thus far in the game was on the part of Sawyer's Fields.
- 47:20He had rookie church warming up when Roberts was having a bit of difficulty
- 47:25early in the play.
- 47:28Nothing in one derailleur has one for one, a single left.
- 47:31The change is low before the play, for a one.
- 47:37One-on-one.
- 47:38These teams seem looser now, a bit more relaxed than they ordinarily are.
- 47:43The change is a bit high and wide, for a two.
- 47:49Many men will insist the American League strikes on,
- 47:53it's short of an international league, and it goes the other way too, two-on-one.
- 47:57Swinging off up.
- 47:59And variably, the American League has, it seems,
- 48:03stronger power-hitting teams, like the Red Sox, the Yankees, Tigers and Cleveland.
- 48:13Two-on-two.
- 48:15First man up, top of the third, Yankees leading, one to nothing.
- 48:18Roberts set, fill the break.
- 48:20Swinging the same, stuck and off.
- 48:22Best ball.
- 48:23And the first strikeout on the game, chopped up by young Robin Roberts.
- 48:31I noticed that Mel made an interesting note about
- 48:34Vic Rashi coming from Springfield, Massachusetts, where a famed piece of arms originated.
- 48:39And yet during the season they've referred constantly to Roberts as the Springfield rifle.
- 48:44So those in Massachusetts, feel no offense because Mr. Roberts is from Springfield, Illinois.
- 48:56So those in Massachusetts, feel no offense because Mr. Roberts is from Springfield, Illinois.
- 49:07Here is Joe DeMaggio.
- 49:09Mr. Roberts on the mound, facing Joe, over one. Swinging misses, strikeout.
- 49:20Even when he misses, that DeMaggio looks good down there.
- 49:23There's just one DeMaggio, Joe DeMaggio, that is. Nothing in one.
- 49:28Backed away by an inside fastball.
- 49:30Ball one.
- 49:33Big number five.
- 49:34Ninth World Series.
- 49:400-2 yesterday. Joe was worked twice, you'll recall, once intentionally.
- 49:43Now the 1-1 pitch, Roberts throws.
- 49:45Change up. Pop five, behind second base.
- 49:47Goliath at second base, going back.
- 49:4930 feet, under it. Grabs it.
- 49:54Two up, two down.
- 49:55Top of the third.
- 49:56Score New York one, but for these nothing.
- 49:58And again, it seems to have a little bit more pepper and dash than yesterday's contest.
- 50:03For the supremacy of the opposing pitchers,
- 50:06Rashi of New York and Constanti of the Phillies, what a big story.
- 50:12Second time DeMaggio's popped out to second.
- 50:15Now, my eyes, who fouled out the Seminix to catch it?
- 50:18Strike one, called. Inside fastball.
- 50:27Big left-handed swinger, this fella, from Demeris, Georgia.
- 50:30Two pumps by Roberts, in the motion, throwing.
- 50:33Inside high.
- 50:361-1, throw him tight.
- 50:37I noticed that throughout the series, thus far, they have thrown.
- 50:42This tremendous pull hitter, very tight. Inside.
- 50:451-1, the pitch swinging, a twister toward right field, and it's moving in, can't get it base hit.
- 50:51Now, one hopping single to right by Johnny Myers, for his first base hit of the 1950 World Series.
- 50:56And the fifth, Yankee Bingle.
- 51:02Woodling has two, Myers has one, and Reynolds has one.
- 51:11Now, Bobby Rao, who applied to center, in the second inning in his previous trip.
- 51:15Left-handed batter, deep in the box. Roberts in the stretch.
- 51:20Throwing. Strike one, called. Got the outside corner, just above the brown ease.
- 51:28One man on the Yankees have had base runners in every frame.
- 51:34There have been no errors.
- 51:38Either hits, or walks. Nothing in one.
- 51:41Slow stretch by Robin Roberts. Checking. Throwing.
- 51:44Swinging on a ball, back on the screen. Strike two.
- 51:47Throwing high.
- 51:49Brown has played almost the same way that Ashburn or the Phillies has played.
- 51:53They move in on him, left and center.
- 51:56The right field has stayed flush.
- 51:58Playing him straight away.
- 52:00Score, one to nothing. New York. Cup of the third.
- 52:03The crowd, this seems a little bit more tipped up today for some reason or other.
- 52:07Might be the weather.
- 52:09And of course, a lot of it has to do with the ball game right now.
- 52:120-2 on Brown. Two gone. Mies leading off first.
- 52:19Roberts, pitching.
- 52:21Inside at the toes. Ball one. Turb wall.
- 52:31All of the Phillies were blank after Hammer had tripled.
- 52:34With one away. They noticed they were infield.
- 52:37Pepper and Dash out there in a constant chatter.
- 52:42A little bit higher than yesterday. Same thing goes for the Yankees.
- 52:44One and two.
- 52:46Pitch, swinging. A twister, a foul.
- 52:49Upper stand, short left field.
- 52:52Still one ball, two strikes. Two ball in play.
- 52:55Seminick will finish the regular National League season with a bad ankle.
- 53:00Tell me today that his ankle feels better now than it has for the past 10 days.
- 53:06Or it is still heavily taped by the field trainer, Frank Wiecek.
- 53:14One and two. Two gone. One on.
- 53:18Placing Brown. Roberts throws. Change is low.
- 53:22Inside. Two and two.
- 53:24The progress of this game, as you have already noted, I'm sure, is much slower than yesterday.
- 53:29There have been more runners on.
- 53:31The Yankees have picked up five hits with a walk thrown in.
- 53:34The Phillies have two hits.
- 53:37That's the top of the third. Even up two and two.
- 53:40Big pitch. Picking outside.
- 53:43Ball three.
- 53:46Brown had to have a sharp pair of eyes for that one.
- 53:49He was about to cut.
- 53:51And he'll go for that outside pitch, you know, he hits to left field invariably.
- 53:56As he did yesterday with his double.
- 54:00Full count.
- 54:02So watch Mies.
- 54:04He'll be breaking with two down.
- 54:07Three and two pitch. Swung on. Hit well to our deep center.
- 54:11When Ashburn moves back with a roll in the time and grabs it.
- 54:15Further down. Brown flies to deep center.
- 54:17Third inning for New York.
- 54:19No runs. A single to right by Johnny Mies.
- 54:22No field errors and Mies left on.
- 54:24Two and a half innings for the New York Yankees.
- 54:26One. The Philadelphia Phillies. Nothing.
- 54:30When Mickey Vernon of the Washington Senators was on the air.
- 54:34He said that no matter where he buys them.
- 54:37Gillette blue blades are always sharp and easy shaving.
- 54:40Many a globetrotter has said the same thing.
- 54:43Bring them back alive. Frank Buck once asserted.
- 54:45Gillette blue blades are head and shoulders above all others in quantity.
- 54:49They're always equally sharp and smooth shaving.
- 54:52Whether I buy them in New York, Calcutta, or some native trading post.
- 54:56In a Malayan jungle.
- 54:58Men ask for Gillette blue blades in the modern Gillette dispenser.
- 55:02It deals them out unwrapped and has a handy built-in compartment
- 55:05for the safe disposal of used blades.
- 55:07You get 20 blades. 40 shaving edges for 98 cents.
- 55:1210 blades for 49 cents.
- 55:14Look sharp.
- 55:16Feel sharp.
- 55:17Be sharp.
- 55:18Use Gillette blue blades for the sharpest edges ever home.
- 55:30Robert receives an accolade from the Philadelphia audience here.
- 55:34As we try to do, it's just a bit larger than it was yesterday.
- 55:38I'm quite certain that we'll have at least 31 or 32,000 registered by the time our broadcast is over.
- 55:45Robert Roberts batting left handed.
- 55:49Reynolds set to work on him.
- 55:51Throws high inside and knocks him down for a while.
- 55:54Roberts got a key hit in the final victory over the Dodgers.
- 55:59And season long, he was 12 for 102. Mark of 118.
- 56:03Bat at home. Six runs.
- 56:05He bats left handed.
- 56:07They're all throwing right. One and O.
- 56:09Spike one ball. Let a high pass ball.
- 56:11Uses are a very wide open stance.
- 56:20101.
- 56:23Set to go. Pitching.
- 56:25Swinging missing.
- 56:27Break two.
- 56:30Nobody out. Nobody on.
- 56:32Last of the third.
- 56:33But for these at bat, Yankees leading one to nothing.
- 56:36They play Robbie straight away toward left.
- 56:39Infield orthodox.
- 56:41Big shadow now and can't along the first baseline.
- 56:44One and two.
- 56:45Reynolds delivers. Robert swings the misses.
- 56:47Struck him out.
- 56:48And for the galley number three in the ball game.
- 56:51We have an apology to make.
- 56:54Charlie Berry is not from Pennsylvania.
- 56:57He went to college and played football there and baseball there.
- 57:00He's a friend from Phillipsburg, New Jersey because the folks in Phillipsburg have let us know about it.
- 57:06So we tip our hat to Phillipsburg and a lot of fans of course in New Jersey are over here today.
- 57:11Here's Eddie Wakers.
- 57:12Gene, New Jersey is not far from Pennsylvania.
- 57:17Thank you, Mel Allen.
- 57:20Eddie Wakers takes the ball. Strike one.
- 57:24Bounced out. Second baseman Coleman to first.
- 57:26Spike on the first inning. Opa one.
- 57:27Hitler's in the series.
- 57:28Spin on once with a walk.
- 57:31Nothing in one.
- 57:32Running left handed. Straightaway header.
- 57:34And those pitches far.
- 57:36Eddie swings.
- 57:37Fly, fly, forward right.
- 57:38Fair ball.
- 57:39Right out of line.
- 57:40Holding to the ball.
- 57:41Wakers rounding first.
- 57:42Running for second base.
- 57:43And he is held up by Sawyer at second.
- 57:45Residual made a great fake.
- 57:47And from all of it, Wakers thought that Phil had the ball as the relay came in slowly from right fielder far via second baseman Coleman.
- 57:56It was right on the chalk mark.
- 57:58And that time the baseline umpire certainly came in handy.
- 58:02For either side.
- 58:05Now Barley.
- 58:07And there was a new mode, did you see, an umpire set up just a couple of seasons ago.
- 58:13For that ball was inches from being fouled.
- 58:19A double to the right fielder bullpen.
- 58:21With one out.
- 58:24The Phillies have three hits and may have all been for extra bases.
- 58:27And Ashburn, who had the first one, a double to right center, which Bauer missed the shoestring, is up there now.
- 58:33With one down and the man on second.
- 58:35The strike is taken.
- 58:37A fast ball on the outside corner.
- 58:46That was right on the line, that double.
- 58:48And he's leading one to nothing.
- 58:50And again, the Phillies pulled the threat for the third straight time.
- 58:54Nothing one count on Ashburn.
- 58:57Round moving in at third.
- 58:58Swinging up all.
- 58:59Strike two.
- 59:03That ball went smack dab right back to all the photographers.
- 59:09Now I had some lenses broken down there.
- 59:15The umpire, the other, in right, Bauer has been motioned in.
- 59:18By the Yankee bench headed by Mr. Stangle, the skipper.
- 59:25And they are playing Ashburn as if they would be playing straight away.
- 59:30Right handed hitter.
- 59:32Although they are pushed to left and woodling, particularly in left, is very, very shallow.
- 59:38No ball to strike count on.
- 59:40Richie Ashburn.
- 59:41Reynolds takes a lot of time.
- 59:43He's setting out for the next pitch.
- 59:44Delivers are very high.
- 59:46And Bauer made a great leap for it.
- 59:49To bring it down, else Wakers easily would have moved on to third base.
- 59:55Now that's the change up that Reynolds has been having difficulty with.
- 59:58It has gone very high.
- 1:00:00And apparently his wrist is snapping just a bit late when he attempts to put the wrinkle on it.
- 1:00:05One and two.
- 1:00:07Wakers on at second base.
- 1:00:09One fill out.
- 1:00:11Last to the third Yankee's leading one to another.
- 1:00:13One and two pitch.
- 1:00:15High and wide.
- 1:00:16Washburn for ball two.
- 1:00:24Bauer has picked up a lot of nicknames along his teammates.
- 1:00:27Vaughn Hustler Express.
- 1:00:29Putt Putt.
- 1:00:30Because of his running in the outfield.
- 1:00:33Go ahead, Whitey.
- 1:00:35And Rick, though his right name is Richie.
- 1:00:38Two and two.
- 1:00:39Slerkham, Reynolds set throws. Richie swings a twisting top fly left to the plate.
- 1:00:44Vera going under it.
- 1:00:45Waiting.
- 1:00:46Grab it.
- 1:00:48He's out.
- 1:00:49That was right near the stands.
- 1:00:51And again we had to take off our left microphone and lean on over.
- 1:00:54We are up so high you see.
- 1:00:56That a portion of the field right below this deck is obliterated.
- 1:01:03Two gone.
- 1:01:04A foul to the catcher and those boys have been busy bees today.
- 1:01:07Sarah and Semonick.
- 1:01:13Yogi went after one before and couldn't quite make it.
- 1:01:15And he's actually one.
- 1:01:17Two gone.
- 1:01:18Runner on a second.
- 1:01:19Reynolds has been supreme with runners on in scoring position.
- 1:01:24And now the threat he must get out of there is Sisper who he got on strikes swinging on a full count fastball in the first inning.
- 1:01:31Sisper betting left handed.
- 1:01:34Change high and wide.
- 1:01:36Ball one.
- 1:01:37Let up bitch.
- 1:01:41At mid season the changeups are getting Sisper a lot of trouble.
- 1:01:45So Sawyer worked on a little bit and he started what he calls getting the opposition a battle.
- 1:01:52Staying alive.
- 1:01:53One on one.
- 1:01:57Pull the hand guarding curve way inside the ankles.
- 1:02:00Ball two.
- 1:02:01At second base, Wacoos.
- 1:02:03Two men out.
- 1:02:04Last of a third.
- 1:02:05Wacoos having doubled.
- 1:02:06Right on the line in right field.
- 1:02:17Reynolds takes a lot of time now.
- 1:02:20Ready?
- 1:02:21Pitching.
- 1:02:22Swinging.
- 1:02:24Fastball has gotten Sisper so far.
- 1:02:26Rashi yesterday and Reynolds is today.
- 1:02:29As a matter of fact Dick went down twice yesterday.
- 1:02:33And the ones today on strikes.
- 1:02:35Two balls, one strike.
- 1:02:37Two gone.
- 1:02:38One on.
- 1:02:39Store one to nothing New York.
- 1:02:40Last of a third.
- 1:02:41Very interesting ball game today.
- 1:02:43Lot of action.
- 1:02:44Lot of thrill.
- 1:02:46In the stretch.
- 1:02:47Reynolds delivers.
- 1:02:50Ball three.
- 1:02:51The curve missed the inside corner.
- 1:02:53Fly off with it.
- 1:02:54Three and one.
- 1:02:59We have at home run bids twice today.
- 1:03:02Once by Woodling and once by Sevening.
- 1:03:04Otherwise the fields have done the extra base hitting.
- 1:03:07Ashburn and Wacoos doubles and a triple by Hammer.
- 1:03:10Three and one.
- 1:03:11Swinging and getting a foul.
- 1:03:13Back on the screen behind the plate.
- 1:03:15Full count.
- 1:03:16Three and two.
- 1:03:17Three and one.
- 1:03:18Three and one.
- 1:03:19Three and one.
- 1:03:20Three and one.
- 1:03:21Three and one.
- 1:03:22Three and one.
- 1:03:25Now for the second time in a row.
- 1:03:27Reynolds and Sussler in that battle.
- 1:03:30Pitcher versus hitter.
- 1:03:32Three and two.
- 1:03:36This fellow doesn't have a long swing.
- 1:03:38But he has great wrists.
- 1:03:41Which are partially impaired.
- 1:03:43The right one because of a recent injury.
- 1:03:45But he's taken a pretty healthy cut down there.
- 1:03:48Three and two.
- 1:03:49Reynolds.
- 1:03:51Great ball of time.
- 1:03:53Ashburn leads over.
- 1:03:54In the stretch.
- 1:03:55The big pitch.
- 1:03:56Swinging.
- 1:03:57A slow hit.
- 1:03:58Ground ball towards second.
- 1:03:59Coleman up with it.
- 1:04:00Go to first.
- 1:04:01In time.
- 1:04:02The sides retired.
- 1:04:03And again.
- 1:04:04Alley Reynolds comes to the fore with runners on beyond first.
- 1:04:06And retires the side without a score.
- 1:04:08In the third inning for the Phillies.
- 1:04:10No runs.
- 1:04:11A one out double by Eddie Wacoos.
- 1:04:13No errors by the Yankees.
- 1:04:14And Wacoos left stand at it's second.
- 1:04:16Three innings.
- 1:04:17The Yankees won.
- 1:04:18The Phillies nothing.
- 1:04:21Now ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:04:25This is the Mitual Broadcasting System.
- 1:04:40Locket Shy Park in the Quaker City of Philadelphia.
- 1:04:43With Mel Allen and Al Helper.
- 1:04:45This is Gene Kelly on the Gillette Cavalcade of Sports.
- 1:04:48The 1950 World Series.
- 1:04:50Moving into the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:04:53Of the second game.
- 1:04:54The Yankees won yesterday.
- 1:04:55Wounded nothing.
- 1:04:56And the one run in the ball game.
- 1:04:57Was scored by New York.
- 1:04:58In the second inning.
- 1:04:59When with two outs.
- 1:05:00A pass to Jelly Coleman.
- 1:05:01The Yankees second baseman.
- 1:05:02A surprise right field single by Alley Reynolds.
- 1:05:04And another single by Gene Woodley.
- 1:05:06The shortstop on which Hunter couldn't make a play.
- 1:05:08Scored the one run.
- 1:05:09And the second inning.
- 1:05:10The Yankees won yesterday.
- 1:05:11And the one run in the ball game.
- 1:05:12Was scored by New York.
- 1:05:13And the second inning.
- 1:05:14Scored the one run.
- 1:05:16Both pitchers have been hit well.
- 1:05:18It's not frequently.
- 1:05:19So Roberts has given up five hits.
- 1:05:21And the three hits by the fields or fennels.
- 1:05:23Have been for the distance.
- 1:05:24Or extra bases at least.
- 1:05:25Ash Burns and Wakers' doubles.
- 1:05:27And a triple by Hamlet.
- 1:05:29Now oddly enough.
- 1:05:30Those hits came with one out.
- 1:05:31So that Reynolds.
- 1:05:32Had to call upon his reserve.
- 1:05:34To pitch well.
- 1:05:35And get out of an inning.
- 1:05:38Now.
- 1:05:39In the top of the fourth inning.
- 1:05:40Hank Fowler.
- 1:05:41Who fouled out the third in his first trip.
- 1:05:42Batting my head in.
- 1:05:43Puts.
- 1:05:44And sends a foul.
- 1:05:45Back upstairs.
- 1:05:46On the screen strike one.
- 1:05:49This fellow is a swashbuckling type ball player.
- 1:05:53He's the kind of ball player that you like to have around your house.
- 1:05:58Nothing in one.
- 1:06:00Change.
- 1:06:01Is wide.
- 1:06:02The ball won.
- 1:06:04He tries.
- 1:06:05He's hustling all the time.
- 1:06:06And he gave evidence of that.
- 1:06:08Even when the missed the shoestring on Ash Burns' double.
- 1:06:11One on one.
- 1:06:12Robert's pitching.
- 1:06:14Close for all two.
- 1:06:17We first have the opportunity of watching Hank.
- 1:06:19Out in Kansas City.
- 1:06:20A couple of seasons ago.
- 1:06:22And the Yankees wasted no time.
- 1:06:24In his second full season with the Blues.
- 1:06:26And recalling it.
- 1:06:27Up with big cliff mates.
- 1:06:29We alternates with occasionally.
- 1:06:30In the outfield.
- 1:06:31Two in one.
- 1:06:33Curve is wide.
- 1:06:34Ball three.
- 1:06:36Now you'll note.
- 1:06:38That in each inning so far.
- 1:06:39Robert says either run behind the first man up.
- 1:06:43Or else has given up.
- 1:06:46I hit.
- 1:06:47This is the top of the four.
- 1:06:49Three in one.
- 1:06:51Swinging.
- 1:06:52A lazy hop fly.
- 1:06:54Going toward the shortstop post.
- 1:06:56Hamner under it.
- 1:06:57And takes it.
- 1:06:58Hamner affects a Miranda type best pocket.
- 1:07:02Remember the immortal rabbit from Miranville.
- 1:07:05A tiny fellow that used to put his glove in his hand.
- 1:07:07To get it right around the belt buckle.
- 1:07:09And he used to hang him on there for the put out.
- 1:07:11That's just what Hamner did.
- 1:07:12One away.
- 1:07:17Jerry Coleman.
- 1:07:19The one walk given up by Roberts.
- 1:07:21And a very, very important one for New York.
- 1:07:23Jerry has scored the one run in the game.
- 1:07:25Hottie right handed.
- 1:07:27Leans in and sends a.
- 1:07:28Locker toward left center field.
- 1:07:30It's in there for base hit.
- 1:07:31It gets away from Ashburn.
- 1:07:33Back up by systemally in the second Coleman.
- 1:07:35He overhand the ball.
- 1:07:38And they're giving him a double on it.
- 1:07:40Ashburn charged.
- 1:07:41Onto the ball.
- 1:07:42And in trying to grab it.
- 1:07:43It skimmed over his left shoulder.
- 1:07:46Fortunately for the Phillies.
- 1:07:47Cicilla was backing up.
- 1:07:48Nevertheless.
- 1:07:49Coleman essay too easily.
- 1:07:52Stand up.
- 1:07:53A double.
- 1:07:54First extra base hit of the game for New York.
- 1:07:55Leonard on it.
- 1:07:56Second one down.
- 1:07:57Alley Reynolds.
- 1:08:00And the second extra base hit of the series for New York.
- 1:08:03Browns double yesterday.
- 1:08:13This Coleman likes his doubles.
- 1:08:14That's his fourth in World Series competition.
- 1:08:17Now with a runner at second.
- 1:08:18The batter is Alley Reynolds who is single in the second.
- 1:08:21Strike one.
- 1:08:22Let's call that a cross strike.
- 1:08:23Because Alley didn't take a full cut.
- 1:08:26Alparez will tell you the intent is what matters.
- 1:08:30When they have swing down there.
- 1:08:32He didn't take a real full cut.
- 1:08:34Strike one.
- 1:08:36Man on second for New York.
- 1:08:39One man out and the score.
- 1:08:40The Yankees one with the Phillies nothing.
- 1:08:42Robertson with slow stretch.
- 1:08:43Right hand of fires.
- 1:08:45Curve just misses.
- 1:08:46Outside and low.
- 1:08:48Four one.
- 1:08:49It was a well conceived pitch but just missed the strike zone.
- 1:08:58Another one.
- 1:08:59Stushing.
- 1:09:00Stushing.
- 1:09:01Stushing.
- 1:09:02Sticking.
- 1:09:03Delivering.
- 1:09:04Strike two called.
- 1:09:06Curve caught the corner.
- 1:09:07Of the sixth hit that Jerry Coleman has now picked up in World Series play.
- 1:09:11Four of them have been doubled.
- 1:09:12So he's a man of watch.
- 1:09:14Having been at bat 25 times.
- 1:09:20One ball two strike down on Reynolds.
- 1:09:22Steven the box.
- 1:09:23Roberts delivers.
- 1:09:24Alley takes outside.
- 1:09:25Ball two.
- 1:09:26Two and two.
- 1:09:27Two and two.
- 1:09:30It's a game that has a similar score of yesterday's game but the complexion of it is entirely different.
- 1:09:35There have been runners on for New York in every inning now as well as for the Phillies.
- 1:09:41Even up two and two.
- 1:09:42Big Robbie tugging on the cap.
- 1:09:44Brushing his jersey going to the fans leg.
- 1:09:47Now whether to work.
- 1:09:48Summoning it out of the crotch.
- 1:09:49The target set.
- 1:09:51The check.
- 1:09:52The pitch.
- 1:09:53All three.
- 1:09:54Roll and away.
- 1:09:55Now of course with Reynolds up there having a single sharply to right.
- 1:10:00In the second inning Roberts naturally is pitching like there are nine hitters in that batting order.
- 1:10:05And well he might.
- 1:10:06So he drew over cautious and throwing a fake pitch up there was low and wide.
- 1:10:11So the full count is on.
- 1:10:14Leading off second.
- 1:10:15Long lead.
- 1:10:16Coleman.
- 1:10:17Pitch.
- 1:10:18Wide for ball four.
- 1:10:19He lost it.
- 1:10:20Second pass by Roberts.
- 1:10:27Now invariably in a series such as this.
- 1:10:31The base on balls is a big trouble maker.
- 1:10:35Roberts was highly effective in becoming the first 20 game winner for the Phillies since Grover Cleveland Alexander did it in 1917 with 30 games.
- 1:10:45He has gotten himself in consistent hot water.
- 1:10:47He has had one bad inning.
- 1:10:53More often than not.
- 1:10:56Again young Bubba Church who warms up for the Phills in left field.
- 1:10:59The right hander.
- 1:11:01There are two Yankees on.
- 1:11:02Coleman at second Reynolds at first.
- 1:11:04And the batter is Gene Woodling who was two for two with a big RBI batting lieutenant.
- 1:11:09Pitching strike one ball.
- 1:11:12Pitch fastball. Woodling's singles have been toward the hole between short and third but not quite through it.
- 1:11:20Hamner feeling the ball two times but no play.
- 1:11:25Nothing in one.
- 1:11:27Reynolds now uses the warm up jacket by the way.
- 1:11:29It's getting cool.
- 1:11:30Nothing in one.
- 1:11:31Ready?
- 1:11:32A pitch.
- 1:11:33Swing.
- 1:11:34A high fly going forward left field.
- 1:11:36System moving over.
- 1:11:37Getting it at try.
- 1:11:38Near the stands.
- 1:11:39Moving out there and feeling off from his short stop position was Granville Hamner.
- 1:11:48And he was ready if Sussler would go off balance on the fly to grab the ball.
- 1:11:52Hamner has the best throwing arm on the team.
- 1:11:55So that's Coleman held on at second base.
- 1:11:58A foul fly grabbed him left by Dick Sussler.
- 1:12:03Two down and two on.
- 1:12:05Score New York one.
- 1:12:07If there is nothing, top of the board.
- 1:12:13The Gillette Safety Wraithing Company all hosts today from Shy Park in Philadelphia.
- 1:12:18Now, Scooter was at all.
- 1:12:20Little fill.
- 1:12:21Over two.
- 1:12:23Fair foul outs.
- 1:12:24There's a fill to second and the runner is back in time.
- 1:12:27Go to the end.
- 1:12:28Steal over.
- 1:12:30That's a dangerous throw.
- 1:12:31Boy you gotta make that one accurate.
- 1:12:33There's nobody backing you up.
- 1:12:35Gets away.
- 1:12:37And runner goes.
- 1:12:42Pitch.
- 1:12:43Foul off by a fill.
- 1:12:45Strike one.
- 1:12:49Scooter.
- 1:12:50Foul out to Semonix to catch him in the first and slide.
- 1:12:53Lazy lead to center field for the third out on the second over two.
- 1:12:59In a series now all told he has one for five.
- 1:13:02He got his single just about.
- 1:13:05Tiny right handed batter.
- 1:13:07Jockey size.
- 1:13:11Nothing in one.
- 1:13:12Two men on, two gone.
- 1:13:13We're stretched by Roberts for pitch.
- 1:13:15The swing.
- 1:13:16A line drive to right.
- 1:13:17Hanging up.
- 1:13:18And his header.
- 1:13:23So Lazy Lazy stuck back from the pitch and tried a puncher to right.
- 1:13:26And well he did but it hung up.
- 1:13:27And an anus grab it for the final out.
- 1:13:29In the fourth inning with pitching in the clutch.
- 1:13:32More than anything else today with a runner's on.
- 1:13:34No runs.
- 1:13:36A double by Coleman.
- 1:13:37A walk thrown in.
- 1:13:38No errors by the Phillies.
- 1:13:40And two Yankees left on.
- 1:13:41Three and one half innings.
- 1:13:43The New York Yankees won the Phillies nothing.
- 1:13:47Fans for the Gillette Super Speed Razor.
- 1:13:49Shaving is a refreshing experience.
- 1:13:51And far more convenient than ever before.
- 1:13:54You ease off with whiskers.

- 1:13:57No time at all.

- 1:14:09There's nothing to take apart or put together.
- 1:14:11Nothing to waste your time or try your patience.
- 1:14:13Twist.
- 1:14:14The razor opens.
- 1:14:15Zip.
- 1:14:16It's loaded.
- 1:14:17Twist again.
- 1:14:18And you're ready for the easiest, smoothest jay possible.
- 1:14:22Ask for Gillette Super Speed Razor.
- 1:14:24And see what real shaving ease and convenience are like.
- 1:14:27You get it in a handsome serviceable Skyrene travel case.
- 1:14:31With a 10-grade Gillette dispenser.
- 1:14:33A big $1.75 value for only a dollar.
- 1:14:37Believe me, man.
- 1:14:38This Gillette Super Speed Razor set is a beauty and a bargain.
- 1:14:48Set to go.
- 1:14:49Last half of the four innings.
- 1:14:50This, of course, is the big pivotal game.
- 1:14:53The opening game naturally has tremendous psychological advantages.
- 1:14:57But you see, if the Yankees win this one,
- 1:15:00at the two-game margin to work on in their own park,
- 1:15:03starting tomorrow at the stadium in the Bronx in New York,
- 1:15:06if the Phillies win, well, they're still down
- 1:15:09from the home stand percentage standpoint,
- 1:15:11because they play in a foreign park,
- 1:15:13though they have been a good road club.
- 1:15:17Now, Delinus, who with a runner on it's second and two gone in the first,
- 1:15:21grounded out to Coleman, second base.
- 1:15:23All for one.
- 1:15:24Del Hitlis in the series, thus far,
- 1:15:26batting right-handed.
- 1:15:27Reynolds set to work.
- 1:15:28Last strike one.
- 1:15:30Boy, he's got a quick motion out there.
- 1:15:32He reminds us much of Jim Hearn,
- 1:15:34a very effective right-hander secured by DeRosier from the Cardinals.
- 1:15:37A very deceptive motion.
- 1:15:40And he backs it up for the darting fastball
- 1:15:43and a sharp-breaking hook.
- 1:15:46Nothing in one.
- 1:15:48Wide of the plate for Ball, low on outside.
- 1:15:53Outfield on Ennis.
- 1:15:55Seized and Margell's pretty deep in left center,
- 1:15:58but he hasn't concentrated as sharply as most other centerfielders ordinarily are on Ennis.
- 1:16:03However, Woodling in left is deep.
- 1:16:06One-on-one.
- 1:16:11Pitching, swinging, I say, high fastball.
- 1:16:14Ennis complained today.
- 1:16:18We talked about Rashi's pitching.
- 1:16:19And Del is the author of some articles that have put a LFB newspaper.
- 1:16:22He said, he looked good.
- 1:16:24I thought I could hit him, but he wouldn't bring that ball in on me.
- 1:16:27And right now that's what Reynolds was going to him.
- 1:16:29That is still keeping the ball away.
- 1:16:32One-on-two.
- 1:16:36Score, New York one.
- 1:16:38He's nothing last to the fourth.
- 1:16:40Nobody on, nobody out.
- 1:16:41A big one-two pitch.
- 1:16:42Reynolds delivers.
- 1:16:43He swings him into it.
- 1:16:44He's stuck him out.
- 1:16:52Now, oddly enough, the fellows from home you don't expect a long ball have hit it today,
- 1:16:57or at least the extra base for the Phillies.
- 1:16:59Wake is an Ashburn, who are two straightaway cuts as is Hamden.
- 1:17:03He has the triple.
- 1:17:05That's the fourth Reynolds strikeout.
- 1:17:12One down.
- 1:17:13You've got a big man out of there, too.
- 1:17:14Here's Jones, who's stuck out in a second.
- 1:17:17Inside on a slow curve, or what?
- 1:17:19Jones, he was called out on one of the most dazzling curves you'll ever want to see in a world series.
- 1:17:31One-on-one.
- 1:17:32Third baseman Jones.
- 1:17:34Even the box.
- 1:17:35Swinging a high, lazy pop fly in the infield, pulling for it,
- 1:17:39gunning him high, is 100, and grabs it 15 feet off the bag.
- 1:17:44Just parallel to it.
- 1:17:46One away.
- 1:17:49Therein seems to lie Reynolds' secret.
- 1:17:52He's gotten a big man out of there.
- 1:17:54Notice that was one out in the first Ashburn double, but he got sister on strikes and Ennis on a lazy ground ball.
- 1:18:00In a second, he got Jones out of there, long ball hitter on strikes, Hamner tripled,
- 1:18:04but he got Seminick, another long ball slinger, and Goliath.
- 1:18:08And now he has Ennis and Jones out of there as he faces Hamner who tripled.
- 1:18:12Two down.
- 1:18:14Scroll one to nothing.
- 1:18:15New York, last half of the fourth.
- 1:18:17Filled batting.
- 1:18:19Wide and low to Hamner, ball one.
- 1:18:27Hamner's triple.
- 1:18:28Sword, right below the scoreboard in right center field.
- 1:18:32That was his first trip up there.
- 1:18:35One for one.
- 1:18:37One ball, no strikes.
- 1:18:39Pitching.
- 1:18:40Side on curve, misses outside.
- 1:18:42We might point out that Berra has done a remarkable job today.
- 1:18:46Reynolds is a bit wilder than Rashi was yesterday,
- 1:18:49but he's climbed up on the ladder a couple of times,
- 1:18:53bring down some real wild pitches, victory with runners on.
- 1:19:00Two and nothing count, a granny Hamner working carefully on this fellow who belted the triple.
- 1:19:05The pitch, high inside, ball three.
- 1:19:11Three and all.
- 1:19:19He was two and nothing on Hamner last time.
- 1:19:21Now the three and nothing pitch is low for ball four.
- 1:19:28Now Seminick and the crowd's imagination is wetted a bit
- 1:19:32because this fellow really hit the ball although foul to left field last time.
- 1:19:37Yankees lead by one, low and run.
- 1:19:40That's Reynolds' first pass.
- 1:19:51Roberts has two.
- 1:19:56But Alley has fan four.
- 1:19:58Now he faces Seminick.
- 1:20:00I think Mel will agree with me that this fellow has one of the oddest stances he's ever seen.
- 1:20:05To throw back to Al Simmons' famous bucket stance.
- 1:20:10Swings and misses, went for the high outside fastball.
- 1:20:13It's actually a tick with Barra held on, strike one.
- 1:20:19On it first, granny Hamner.
- 1:20:25Both teams have put runners on in every inning.
- 1:20:31Nothing and one count.
- 1:20:34Now the Reynolds delivering.
- 1:20:36Swinging a foul, threw him tight, got it off the handle, back up on the screen.
- 1:20:40Strike two.
- 1:20:43While the Phillies have a man on for the fourth straight inning, he has not hit.
- 1:20:47They picked up three hits, two doubles and a triple in the first three.
- 1:20:51The Yankees have picked up a total of six hits off Roberts.
- 1:20:57One for extra bases, Coleman's double, to left center.
- 1:21:06Nothing and two.
- 1:21:08Two gone, one on.
- 1:21:11Potential tying on it first.
- 1:21:13One of breaks, high outside and he goes in safely without a throw.
- 1:21:24Hamner actually still had pitch on Reynolds.
- 1:21:27Reynolds took a long, long time.
- 1:21:30And it apparently wasn't cognizant of the fact that Hamner was really digging in hard
- 1:21:36and Barra had no chance at all.
- 1:21:38Matter of fact by the time Yogi cocked his arm, Hamner was in a slide.
- 1:21:42Still in base.
- 1:21:44First one of the series.
- 1:21:47Time called and sets a runner up in scoring position.
- 1:21:50With a count.
- 1:21:52One and two, that was a wide, high pitch.
- 1:21:56The scoreboard had nothing in it over the time.
- 1:21:58Time was full until on Barra McGowan straightened about.
- 1:22:01Now one and two.
- 1:22:03Change is close.
- 1:22:05Of all two.
- 1:22:07Now this situation is a dangerous one.
- 1:22:10If even the Yankees, Reynolds has not allowed a hit in the setting.
- 1:22:16Or the defense was crossed up.
- 1:22:18That'll keep you on edge, you see.
- 1:22:21Even up two walls, two strikes, two guard, man on second, Grannie Hammer.
- 1:22:25Last of the four.
- 1:22:27The score Yankees one, fills nothing.
- 1:22:29Reynolds set, pitching, change up, swings and misses.
- 1:22:32Struck him out.
- 1:22:34He had it with a jug handle hook that time.
- 1:22:37And again, the curve ball breaking off, gets a fill in a tight situation for Allie Reynolds.
- 1:22:43It's all for Allie Reynolds, strikeout number five.
- 1:22:46No fourth inning for the Phillies, no runs, no hits for the first time in the game.
- 1:22:51A walk thrown in, no errors by the Yankees, and a man left on his second Grannie Hammer.
- 1:22:57Four innings, New York one, the Phillies, nothing.
- 1:23:02Forever Men Shave Gillette Blue Blades are number one in preference.
- 1:23:06That's because these finest abrasive blades, five per quarter, give the slickest shave the quickest and easiest in the book.
- 1:23:13Now for extra convenience, why Gillette Blue Blades and the handy Gillette Dispenser?
- 1:23:18It's available in 10 and 20 blade sizes, for the price of the blades at all.
- 1:23:24The way Reynolds is pitching today, is the way that the Jim Kinstady told Mel and myself that he likes to pitch.
- 1:23:31It seems as though he welcomes the opportunity to bear down with runners on.
- 1:23:35And Mel, I think you might make a point here, about how Allie did during the season on such occasions.
- 1:23:41Well Gene Allie has always been a rough guy when the going is toughest.
- 1:23:45Frequently it seems that he needed some prodding to really give his very best effort.
- 1:23:52Sometimes I like that, not intentionally, but they sort of just go along taking it easy, some of the longest things are easy.
- 1:23:59But then when they get in trouble, they really go to work.
- 1:24:02Well that's Allie Reynolds, that wraps it up in a nutshell.
- 1:24:06Now, top of the fifth, Yogi Berra, coming around as if to bunt, takes the strike.
- 1:24:11I don't know whether Berra has ever called upon a bunt very often.
- 1:24:14But apparently the take was on from Frankie Crocetti coaching a third for New York, Bill Dickies at first.
- 1:24:20Nothing in one, Yogi is one for two.
- 1:24:23There's a twisting foul right below our Gillette microphone and for a moment we thought we'd have a world series souvenir.
- 1:24:29You should have seen that, Alan.
- 1:24:31He was digging in all the way from Birmingham, Alabama.
- 1:24:35Looked just like DiMaggio on that one.
- 1:24:39Where did that come from?
- 1:24:47Nothing in two, Cal.
- 1:24:48Robert's pitching high and wide for the chunky backstop.
- 1:24:54Four-one.
- 1:24:57Yogi Berra.
- 1:25:00First man up top of the fifth, Yankees leading one to nothing.
- 1:25:03Robert's hurling, swinging a twisting pump shortstop side, getting under 15 feet out in the grass, hammer, and makes the put-out.
- 1:25:13Berra pumps out the short, one away.
- 1:25:17Berra was asking me about, what's this he hears about, Tommy Graviano at the St. Louis Cardinals putting on an act with his old friend, Giorgio Garagiola.
- 1:25:26You see both Yogi and the cards catch Garagiola held in St. Louis.
- 1:25:30They ought to get the three of you fellas together and you really have something this winter.
- 1:25:34Now for Jover.
- 1:25:36Come on, Jo.
- 1:25:37Over two, Berra pump flies to second.
- 1:25:40Wide curve to big Jo.
- 1:25:42Roll one.
- 1:25:49One and oh, one gone, nobody on.
- 1:25:52Robert's pitching, Jo's swinging.
- 1:25:54Another high, very, very high pump fly.
- 1:25:56Jones is calling for this one at third, counts the glove, camps under, and grabs.
- 1:26:03Pop it up now.
- 1:26:06That thing was it, about high enough for a ball of travel for a home run.
- 1:26:09That was way up above the roof.
- 1:26:12Now where is seated, way up here.
- 1:26:17You almost need an oxygen tank.
- 1:26:21Johnny wires.
- 1:26:24One for two, single right.
- 1:26:26Swinging up out.
- 1:26:30This fellow is one of the most graceful swingers in the game today and despite the fact that he's one of the oldest campaigners in Major League Baseball
- 1:26:38and still swing right back.
- 1:26:42Up all is one strike.
- 1:26:44High in around the chin.
- 1:26:47Roll one.
- 1:26:48Johnny fouled out to Seminik to catch it for the third out in the first inning and then with a
- 1:26:53two man out for the Yankees in the third.
- 1:26:56Got a rightful single to right.
- 1:27:01Another foul cut off.
- 1:27:04A high at home plate and apparently though they are out of view the fans are scrambling for it.
- 1:27:09One ball to strike.
- 1:27:18Score one to nothing, New York.
- 1:27:20Top of the fifth.
- 1:27:22Pitching now is resembling something like yesterday's early.
- 1:27:28Roberts takes a lot of time after he gets a new one.
- 1:27:31Into the big pumping motion.
- 1:27:33The kick, the throw, the swing, the miss.
- 1:27:36Stuck in out.
- 1:27:38Fastball.
- 1:27:40Tight.
- 1:27:41Inside.
- 1:27:43And for Roberts, his second strikeout victim of the ball game.
- 1:27:48For the first time in the ball game by either pitcher the side is retired in order.
- 1:27:52No runs, no hits, no errors, none left on.
- 1:27:55Four and a half innings, we know your Yankees won.
- 1:27:58The Philadelphia Phillies, nothing.
- 1:28:01Good one.
- 1:28:06Can affect the outcome of the game.
- 1:28:09Well brother, the same is true in shaving.
- 1:28:11Preparing your beard with Gillette shaving cream,
- 1:28:14whether or brushless makes a little bit different from the appearance,
- 1:28:18speed and comfort of your shave.
- 1:28:20Gillette creams remove water-resisting oil from your stubble almost instantly
- 1:28:25so that every whisker gets a good soaking and softens up thoroughly.
- 1:28:28Also Gillette lather and Gillette brushless contain K34,
- 1:28:32which gives valuable protection against annoying facial conditions caused by bacteria.
- 1:28:38This amazing antiseptic destroys up to 99% of the germs on and beneath
- 1:28:43the layers of the skin.
- 1:28:45Equally important, the bacteria count stays down from one day shave to the next,
- 1:28:49affording lasting protection.
- 1:28:51Men, it pays to use Gillette lather or Gillette brushless.
- 1:28:5630 cents.
- 1:29:06Side-climbed curve ball on the inside corner, throwing it on the fifth.
- 1:29:11The module has come up with one fine play today,
- 1:29:14particularly on Emmett's deep drive early in the ball game.
- 1:29:18All mounted up at one on one.
- 1:29:20Nothing in one pitch, Robert's throws, going away.
- 1:29:22Ball one.
- 1:29:25The indicator in right field, which borders the God rail of the upper tier,
- 1:29:30as well as in left, and a two strike count in the crowd started roaring,
- 1:29:34but they quickly changed it to one on one.
- 1:29:36Joe is over four. Robert's flying throw. Joe takes high, inside, ball two.
- 1:29:48Two balls, one strike.
- 1:29:50A pair of pop flies to the second base,
- 1:29:52and a pop out to third, and a foul pop to first,
- 1:29:55so that Joe hasn't gotten the ball out of the infield of staff and on and forth trips.
- 1:29:59Two on one.
- 1:30:01Swinging a fly ball before left field, this one may go all the way. It's a home run.
- 1:30:06A home run for Joe DeMaggio.
- 1:30:09We out there to the upper tier in left center field, a good 375 feet from home plate.
- 1:30:15A line drive that took off and stayed hit, and the Yankee flees.
- 1:30:20Two to one as DeMaggio, who had been hitless in the World Series,
- 1:30:24comes out of his drop with a tremendous drive.
- 1:30:27His seventh World Series home run.
- 1:30:30And this is his ninth World Series.
- 1:30:33So the Yankee could, who had been forced to swing late,
- 1:30:38who everybody said couldn't bring that bat around quickly enough,
- 1:30:42certainly did that time, and now the Yankees ball into a lead, two to one.
- 1:30:48Billy Johnson, the batter, swinging right handed, takes high, inside, ball one.
- 1:30:53Of course, in your batting order, Johnson, who was moved in defensively first
- 1:30:56before he came to the plate, moved in in my position.
- 1:31:00Number five, and hot, who was a pinch runner for Brown, moves down,
- 1:31:04cuts the foul, slipping down behind the plate, or strike one.
- 1:31:09Well, I don't know how dramatic you baseball fans are,
- 1:31:13but I know around the country, are you a Yankee or a Phil Ruder?
- 1:31:18They couldn't have him to a better fellow. Joe DeMaggio.
- 1:31:22You know, Gene, in establishing the order and that ending, I forgot to put Johnson's name on it,
- 1:31:26I said, my eyes was coming up.
- 1:31:29Right now, Johnson has just slung on a missed fastball to strike two.
- 1:31:35One ball, two strikes.
- 1:31:38Ironically, when the field stays off the Dodgers foot on Sunday, they came on a win,
- 1:31:42and this time the Yankees, with Reynolds forcing a double play ball to wind up the frame,
- 1:31:46the Yankees are doing the same thing. One and two, the pitch.
- 1:31:49That swings the misses, strike three, struck him out.
- 1:31:53Number five, or Roberts.
- 1:31:56Well, that was a home run. I mean, there was nothing tainted about that.
- 1:31:59That was a kiss, and at the moment it looks like the kiss of death for the Phil Chulks.
- 1:32:03Of course, they still got the last of the tenth, but that home run can take the starch out of a ball club
- 1:32:08that is played so tightly all the way.
- 1:32:10A left-hander warms up in the bullpen.
- 1:32:14The spectacled left-hander, Joe Ostrovsky, who was secured from St. Louis.
- 1:32:18Here is John Hupp.
- 1:32:20And he takes high and away, ball one.
- 1:32:22One down, one run in, Yankees leading.
- 1:32:25Two to one, now with a tenth in the first extra-ending World Series game since the opener
- 1:32:30between St. Louis and the Boston Red Sox in 1946.
- 1:32:34One nothing pitch. In there for called strike one.
- 1:32:41Of course, a field threat.
- 1:32:44A coup d'etat in that there would be a pinch hitter for Roberts in the last of the tenth
- 1:32:48and then the top of the batting order.
- 1:32:50But there one down now, you see, it's not a tie game.
- 1:32:52One-on-one, swinging a looper to short left field,
- 1:32:55Sissler moving in under and makes the grab.
- 1:32:59Two down. The Phil Stands, of course, were chilled by the Margeau's mighty jolt.
- 1:33:04It went into the upper tier, just clearing the first box out there and was still on the rise.
- 1:33:09And when it left the bat, it appeared as though it was a kind of ball.
- 1:33:13But it might be called, but it just kept rising and rising to the heights of a current lead.
- 1:33:18Two to one, New York.
- 1:33:23Savannah, Hank Bauer. Roberts' slow curve misses outside, ball one.
- 1:33:29That's a wide irony, the one-on-off Roberts in that magnificent game the other day in Brooklyn
- 1:33:33was a home run by Pee-wee Reese.
- 1:33:35And the home run ball right now puts him behind.
- 1:33:38One-on-nothing to Bauer. Leaning in, sending a zipping ground ball to short.
- 1:33:41The camera up with extremely long throw to first. In time by a stride.
- 1:33:45At Bauer, shot out of a gun.
- 1:33:49So, with Bauer's ground foot out, short to first, the Yankees one run.
- 1:33:55The big home run by Jota Margeau. One hit, no errors by the Phillies, and nobody left on.
- 1:34:01Nine and one-half innings. The New York Yankees two, the Phillies one.
- 1:34:07The eight falls all-time greats was the pitcher who won 20 or more games for 15 seasons.
- 1:34:12Won 30 or more for five seasons and turned him three no-hitters during his amazing career.
- 1:34:17How do you like that for top-notch performance?
- 1:34:20Spectacular two is the top-notch shading performance today's Gillette Blue-Blade gives you.
- 1:34:25It has the sharpest, most beautifully finished edges ever home, bar nine.
- 1:34:29Yes, sir, where this blade, wiry, settle comes off through the silt, clean as a whistle.
- 1:34:35To change Gillette Blue-Blade, why not ask for them in the modern Gillette Center that zips them out unwrapped.
- 1:34:41Use a time, save bus, and change blade's presto. Yes, and you'll pay nothing extra.
- 1:34:47Just the price of the blade. Loop sharp, field sharp, B sharp.
- 1:34:53Use Gillette Blue-Blade with the sharpest edges ever home.
- 1:34:58Jackie Mayo, who was added to the World Series Active list of the field roster,
- 1:35:07and is an Oathard Amher where he played baseball for the well-known Jake Klein
- 1:35:12and came up to the field from Toronto in early September, is going to be the pinch hitter for Roberts.
- 1:35:20On the season, Mayo didn't have too impressive a consistent hitting record.
- 1:35:24He was used in spots, particularly when Sussler was hurt with a sprained wrist.
- 1:35:31He was a 222 hitter and played defensively when a field's got a lead late in the game, moving in to replace Sussler.
- 1:35:39Fighty-Fortz, staying seated up for Stingel in the right field bullpen, as well as Big Tom Burrick.
- 1:35:45Reynolds is set on a motion delivering. Mayo takes high around the chin for a while.
- 1:35:50In this 2-1 game, the Yankees leading, last half of the 10th now, Mayo, batting for Roberts,
- 1:35:55but Phil's play for the tie first to see, so the pressure is all on them.
- 1:36:00Reynolds bearing down, third baseman, Johnson-Shadow, the pitch, inside high, ball two.
- 1:36:06The first game was moved beyond 10th.
- 1:36:13Reynolds would have another change, Stunel, ball three.
- 1:36:37Burrick and Ford get the tie to stop throwing hard. Mayo, of course, if he would get on, would represent the tying run.
- 1:36:46Last half of the 10th, we've almost stiked out on Mayo, who can run well, incidentally, batting left handed.
- 1:36:52Pitching, like one's balls. He's alive, and Mayo is Reynolds.
- 1:37:00It has been a magnificent fissure duel, but a much different type ball game than yesterday.
- 1:37:063-1, pitching, ball four.
- 1:37:16The ball pass, issued by Reynolds, and of course one of them was intentional to Whitman,
- 1:37:22who was standing in to hit Ford's ill-vesti, and the last of the night.
- 1:37:27As you know, LaPata is now in the lineup of the catcher, and the batter is Eddie Wickers,
- 1:37:32with a tying run on at first base, and nobody else.
- 1:37:38Fakis has two hits, a double and a single and four trips.
- 1:37:42Looking for the punt, the infield came in, Eddie brought the hand up on the bat, but took it low, ball one.
- 1:37:51Fakis bounced out the second, doubled to right, single and a great play by Coleman at second.
- 1:37:58Nice play that is, and then the fly-down, three percent of field of the module.
- 1:38:03Want to know, leading off, the pitch, the bat, third base side, up with the ball.
- 1:38:08Johnson, one play, first base, in time, and almost off the bag was Jerry Coleman,
- 1:38:14the second baseman who covered, but he put his foot down just in time.
- 1:38:20Dusty Cook, the first base coach, pointer to the umpire, Fakis down there,
- 1:38:25while the next man comes up, let's pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:38:31This is the mutuals-argeting system.
- 1:38:46Fakis shy barks, but offense shores up.
- 1:38:51Willie Johnson moves in from third, as Richie Ashburn, who beat out a punt for a single,
- 1:38:56has a double and four trips.
- 1:38:58He has batted home the only run scored by the field back in the fifth inning.
- 1:39:03Strike one, ball, fast ball on the outside.
- 1:39:10Oddly enough, though, Ashburn has two of the hits made by the Phillies.
- 1:39:13He batted home the run on a fly, fairly deep to left, since Woodling had been moved in on him,
- 1:39:18just as he is right now. The outfield is a shadow, straight away, pushed toward the left,
- 1:39:22helping him one count, Mayo leading off second,
- 1:39:25swinging a quick thing foul, first base side, moving over for it, Johnny Hopp,
- 1:39:29under it, has it, Mayo takes the run off the bag,
- 1:39:32but everybody moves over toward the third base side of the diamond,
- 1:39:35and the veteran cotton top hop from Nebraska races in toward the mid-portion of the diamond
- 1:39:39to make sure that Mayo has no notion.
- 1:39:42Two gone, so it is up as far as the field is concerned to Dick Sissler.
- 1:39:49Sissler has fared poorly with a six.
- 1:39:52He hasn't been able to put the ball out of the infield, and of course was called upon to punt earlier.
- 1:39:58Yesterday he struck out twice, popped up first, then grounded as a pitcher.
- 1:40:03Today he has struck out once, foul to first, grounded a second, then punted into a field as choice
- 1:40:09on a fine play by Residual on Reynolds' great gamble in the eighth inning.
- 1:40:14A game-repeat with all the thrills you could ask for in a world series struggle.
- 1:40:19Ford and Virg all the while continue warming up, and of course,
- 1:40:22Consetti should the field try it up, and the left field both back.
- 1:40:29Runner at second, Mayo. Two gone.
- 1:40:34The stretch by Reynolds, he throws. Sissler swings and misses.
- 1:40:39Like one. Reynolds, who has possessed a tremendous step, is now calling upon the reserve.
- 1:40:44Just as rash he was yesterday, but Reynolds has been in more consistent hot water today.
- 1:40:49As true was the case of Robin Roberts before he went out for the pin chitter.
- 1:40:55Nothing in one.
- 1:40:58Lot of rests on this one better because the Yankees have already beaten one eighth from Satti.
- 1:41:04Nothing in one. It's bringing nothing.
- 1:41:07Thanks to some of the more discontentless filled fans have already started heading toward the exits.
- 1:41:15During World Series Time, the avenues of traffic are a little bit more cluttered up, you see,
- 1:41:21than they would be in a sell-out during a regular seasonal game.
- 1:41:2632,660 of them.
- 1:41:31Nothing in two. Reynolds, a long pause, shakes off one dollar sign, says no on the second.
- 1:41:37Mayo impatiently leading off second base. The galley and the stretch fix delivers.
- 1:41:42Strike three, call them out.
- 1:41:44Call them out. That was a half-fling by Dick Sissler. The ballgame is over, and just as the ballgame wound up yesterday,
- 1:41:50it winds up today. Three up, three down, and Sissler goes down on strike.
- 1:41:55There's plenty of planning about that one, but on fire McGowan, call him out, and Reynolds pitches a 10-inning victory.
- 1:42:01The first 10-inning struggle since 1946.
- 1:42:04In the 10-innings for the Phillies, there was one man on, but I met, of course,
- 1:42:09that he retired three men in order behind the walk. No runs, no hits, no errors, and one man left on.
- 1:42:17Our total's reached for the losing Phillies in 10-innings.
- 1:42:21Seven hits, no errors, and the Phillies left seven men on.
- 1:42:27The losing pitcher was Robert. For the Victoria's New York Yankees, who have now taken two in a row on excellently hurled games,
- 1:42:34they scored two runs, DiMaggio's blasts the court, seeing the equalizer, and the Yankees pick up.
- 1:42:40Ten hits, they commit no errors, and two double plays, pull Reynolds out of hot water, and the Yankees leave on the base pass.
- 1:42:47Ten men. The winning pitcher is Ali Reynolds. Quite a ball game.
- 1:42:52The 10-innings for the Yankees are two-up, and now are odds on favorites this week.
