The Mountain Guarded by the Fairies - Snaefell, Isle of Man · Off You Pop!

• 0:15
SPEAKER_00: It is Off You Pop, podcast for hikers and adventurers who want to be epic in just one day.
• 0:21
SPEAKER_00: Some mountains begin in the hills.
• 0:24
SPEAKER_00: Sneifell begins in the sea.
• 0:27
SPEAKER_00: Today we're climbing Snay Fell, the highest point on the Isle of Man at 2,037 feet.
• 0:35
SPEAKER_00: Starting from the Irish Sea in Laxey, hand in the water, and rising through mining history, Norse naming, Victorian tourism, and the open moorland that crowns the island.
• 0:47
SPEAKER_00: We'll pass the Laxey Will, follow the old miners' road, cross the famous bungalow on the TT course, and finish on the summit where on a clear day you can see six kingdoms.
• 1:01
SPEAKER_00: This is the story behind the mountain, the geology, the Manx language, the fairy folklore, the industrial scars, the railway, the politics, and the people who shaped this island peak.
• 1:15
SPEAKER_00: Now off do you pop?
• 1:16
SPEAKER_00: Snayfell rises from some of the oldest rocks in the British Isles.
• 1:20
SPEAKER_00: Part of the Manx group, deep sea sediments laid down over 480 million years ago.
• 1:27
SPEAKER_00: These rocks began life as mud and silt drifting to the bottom of an ancient ocean.
• 1:33
SPEAKER_00: Long before the British Isles existed, over time, tectonic collisions folded and uplifted them into the rugged spine of the Isle of Man.
• 1:43
SPEAKER_00: During the last ice age, glaciers carved the island into broad U-shaped valleys and smooth moorland ridges.
• 1:50
SPEAKER_00: Sneifell's summit dome, gentle, rounded, almost understated, is the product of thousands of years of ice grinding across its flanks.
• 2:01
SPEAKER_00: It's a mountain shaped not by violence, but by pressure, patience, and time.
• 2:07
SPEAKER_00: Because of its central position, Snayfell is the island's watershed.
• 2:12
SPEAKER_00: Streams radiate outward like spokes on a wheel, flowing to every corner of man.
• 2:18
SPEAKER_00: It is the hydrological heart of the island.
• 2:21
SPEAKER_00: Outline begins where the mountain meets the Irish Sea.
• 2:25
SPEAKER_00: Laksee, Laksa in Old Norse, means Salmon River.
• 2:31
SPEAKER_00: Is a village shaped by water, mining, and the sea.
• 2:35
SPEAKER_00: The Vikings settled here over a thousand years ago, leaving behind names, burial sites, and the foundations of Manx identity.
• 2:45
SPEAKER_00: The Manx language, Gaelkh, still carries Norse foot fingerprints in its vocabulary and river.
• 2:53
SPEAKER_00: Starting the climb with our hand in the sea is symbolic.
• 2:58
SPEAKER_00: It's a full vertical journey, 0 to 2,037 feet, sea to summit, post to cloud.
• 3:08
SPEAKER_00: From here, the mountain begins.
• 3:10
SPEAKER_00: The Laxey Wheel is not just a landmark, it's a statement of ambition.
• 3:16
SPEAKER_00: Built in 1854, the Will is the largest working waterwheel in the world.
• 3:22
  SPEAKER_00: A 72-foot giant of Victorian engineering.
• 3:26
SPEAKER_00: It powered pumps that drain the Great Laxey mine, once one of the richest lead and zinc mines in Europe.
• 3:33
SPEAKER_00: The Wheel's rhythmic turning was the heartbeat of the valley.
• 3:38
SPEAKER_00: The miners who worked here lived brutal lives.
• 3:41
SPEAKER_00: They descended into shafts so deep that the air grew hot and stale, sometimes walking miles underground to reach the working faces.
• 3:49
SPEAKER_00: Children as young as 12 worked as trammers, pushing ore carts through narrow tunnels.
• 3:55
  SPEAKER_00: Accidents were common.
• 3:57
  SPEAKER_00: Collapses, flooding, poisonous air.
• 4:00
SPEAKER_00: One miner, Thomas Culey, famously survived a collapse by crawling through a flooded passage in complete darkness, guided only by the sound of dripping water.
• 4:12
SPEAKER_00: He emerged hours later, half drowned, but alive.
• 4:16
SPEAKER_00: Our climb follows the same route many miners walked every day, except they were heading down into the mountain, not up.
• 4:24
SPEAKER_00: The miner's road is the backbone of our ascent, a steady climb through heather moorland and industrial memory.
• 4:31
SPEAKER_00: This road once carried ore carts, equipment, and workers between the mines in the village.
• 4:38
SPEAKER_00: Today it feels peaceful, but the landscape is full of ghosts, stone shelters collapsing into the earth, rusted ironwork half-buried in the grass, and the faint outline of tramways that once carried the island's wealth downhill.
• 4:53
SPEAKER_00: The Island Man's booming mining shaped its economy, its politics, and its people.
• 4:59
SPEAKER_00: Families lived and died by the mountain.
• 5:02
  SPEAKER_00: We'll follow their footsteps.
• 5:04
SPEAKER_00: The bungalow is where mountain, motorsport, and mythology collide.
• 5:09
SPEAKER_00: This is one of the most famous points on the Isle of Man TT motorcycle course.
• 5:14
SPEAKER_00: A place where riders pass at extreme speed, inches from the mountain railway tracks.
• 5:20
SPEAKER_00: The TT is not just a race, it's a cultural force, a test of nerve and precision that has divined the island for over a century.
• 5:29
SPEAKER_00: Crossing the road here will fill the energy of that history, the roar of engines, the tension of the crowd, the thin line between mastery and disaster.
• 5:39
SPEAKER_00: Beside the road runs the Snayfell Mountain Railway, built in 1895, the only electric mountain railway in the British Isles.
• 5:48
SPEAKER_00: It climbs from Laxey to the summit, a Victorian dream still alive today.
• 5:54
SPEAKER_00: The Snayfell Mountain Railway is a story in itself.
• 5:58
SPEAKER_00: Built during the golden age of Victorian tourism, the Snayfell Mountain Railway was designed to bring visitors from the seaside resorts up into the clouds.
• 6:08
SPEAKER_00: Its trams still use the original Fell Braking system, a central rail that clamps the car to the mountain during high winds or steep gradients.
• 6:18
SPEAKER_00: The lion has survived storms, water enclosures, and economic downturns.
• 6:23
SPEAKER_00: It's one of the last living pieces of Victorian engineering, still doing the job it was built for.
• 6:29
SPEAKER_00: The Summit Cafe, simple, windswept and stubborn, has served generations of hikers, railway passengers, and weather beaten wanderers.
• 6:40
SPEAKER_00: In the early 1900s, it was a wooden hut where visitors could buy tea and postcards.
• 6:45
SPEAKER_00: Today it's a modern shelter, but the spirit is the same: a place to warm up, dry off, and stare out at the kingdoms of the horizon.
• 6:54
SPEAKER_00: On stormy days, the cafe shutters rattle like an old ship.
• 6:59
SPEAKER_00: On clear days, it feels like the top of the world.
• 7:02
SPEAKER_00: From the bungalow, the climb steepens into open moorland.
• 7:06
SPEAKER_00: The wind becomes a companion.
• 7:08
SPEAKER_00: The island falls away beneath you.
• 7:10
SPEAKER_00: The summit is simple but powerful.
• 7:13
SPEAKER_00: A trig point, a stone shelter, the railway station, and the radio masts that connect the island to the world.
• 7:20
SPEAKER_00: And the famous claim, on a clear day you can see six kingdoms: England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Man, and Heaven.
• 7:31
SPEAKER_00: Some locals add a seventh, the Kingdom of the Sea.
• 7:35
SPEAKER_00: Standing here, you'll feel the island's four-story beneath your feet.
• 7:39
SPEAKER_00: The Isle of Man is a place where history and myth walk side by side.
• 7:44
SPEAKER_00: Gaelic is a Godelic, Celtic language, closely related to Irish and Scottish Gaelic, with its own rhythm, vocabulary, and soul.
• 7:54
SPEAKER_00: It nearly died out in the 20th century.
• 7:56
SPEAKER_00: The last native speaker, Ned Madrell, passed in 1974.
• 8:02
SPEAKER_00: But the language has been revived through scores, community groups, and passionate islanders.
• 8:07
SPEAKER_00: Today children grow up speaking it again.
• 8:10
SPEAKER_00: Words like Snayfell, Snow Mountain, Menin, the Isle of Man, Moingie Vegie, the Little People, carry centuries of identity.
• 8:21
SPEAKER_00: The Isle of Man is one of the most fairy-rich cultures in Europe.
• 8:25
SPEAKER_00: The Munji Viji, the Little People, are safe to travel across the island, especially near bridges and mountain passes.
• 8:33
SPEAKER_00: Locals still greet the fairy bridge on the road from Douglas to Castletown with a hello fairies just to stay on their good side.
• 8:42
SPEAKER_00: Snay Fell, with its mist and sudden weather shifts, is considered one of their pathways.
• 8:48
SPEAKER_00: The island also has darker legends, like the Moody Dew, the Black Dog of Man, a spectral hound said to roam the hills and crossroads.
• 8:58
SPEAKER_00: Some say it guards the island, some say it warns of storms.
• 9:03
SPEAKER_00: The Isle of Man is not part of the UK.
• 9:06
SPEAKER_00: It's a self-governing crown dependency with its own parliament, the Tinwald, one of the oldest continuous parliaments in the world, over a thousand years old.
• 9:17
SPEAKER_00: It makes its own laws, runs its own government, and maintains its own history.
• 9:23
SPEAKER_00: Snayfell isn't the tallest mountain in the British Isles.
• 9:27
SPEAKER_00: It isn't the steepest, but it carries a weight geological, industrial, and cultural that makes it feel larger than its 2,037 feet.
• 9:37
SPEAKER_00: It's the mountain of ancient ocean rock, Viking names, mining history, Victorian engineering, TT legends, Manx language, and island identity.
• 9:50
SPEAKER_00: It's a mountain that rises from the sea and ends in the sky.
• 9:55
SPEAKER_00: A mountain that stays with you.
• 9:57
SPEAKER_00: Now let's get on the pop.
• 10:00
SPEAKER_00: So there are many ways to get to the Isle of Man, but the most popular is either by ferry or by aircraft.
• 10:06
SPEAKER_00: I was driving down from the Lake District and had opted to take a flight from Manchester.
• 10:12
SPEAKER_00: When I got to Manchester at three in the afternoon, I was ready for my flight, and I boarded a Logan Air propeller flight that was leaving at 4.45 and arriving at 555.
• 10:26
SPEAKER_00: The intent was to climb Snayfell that very evening.
• 10:29
SPEAKER_00: The flight was calm and uneventful and took about 35 minutes.
• 10:34
SPEAKER_00: And when I landed in Ronaldsway, the Isle of Man's only airport, I was greeted by the taxi driver that I had booked that afternoon.
• 10:43
SPEAKER_00: He took me on a drive along the coastline of the Isle of Man from Ronaldsway, all the way to the seaside harbour town of Laxey, about a 40-minute journey.
• 10:55
SPEAKER_00: And on the way he told me all about his proud Manx history, about the Isle of Man TT, about the ferry bridge that he waved at as we crossed it, and about the dying language of Manx and how the children weren't forced to learn it.
• 11:11
SPEAKER_00: Before I knew it, he was dropping me off in the small harbour town of Laxey.
• 11:16
SPEAKER_00: And I got out and it was a glorious summer evening.
• 11:21
SPEAKER_00: Before me was a sandy beach and the sea, the Irish sea.
• 11:26
SPEAKER_00: I got my stuff ready and I walked down the stone steps onto the beach to touch the sea.
• 11:33
SPEAKER_00: The intent today was to climb the full height of Snayfell from the ocean to 2,037 feet.
• 11:42
SPEAKER_00: You see, one thing about Snayfell making the UK six peaks is it's barely a mountain at all.
• 11:48
SPEAKER_00: The British definition of a mountain demands that it is over two thousand and feet.
• 11:54
SPEAKER_00: And Snayfell just about makes the mark.
• 11:58
SPEAKER_00: So I intended to fully make the trek of the whole experience to ensure that nobody thought I was cheating by going to the Isle of Man and barely climbing a mountain.
• 12:09
SPEAKER_00: So after touching the sea, I went back across the beach, climbed over the clumps of seaweed that were clinging to the rock, back up the stone steps, and began my hike through the village.
• 12:21
SPEAKER_00: Now it starts flat, and you move up, upward, straight upward, towards Snayfell.
• 12:27
SPEAKER_00: Even from the ocean, looking up through the village, you can see it in the distance, a looming mountain with radio masts on top of it.
• 12:35
SPEAKER_00: And it's almost always present as you walk up towards the mountain.
• 12:41
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes you lose it round a bend or behind a hedgerow, but most of the time you can see your destination looming in the distance.
• 12:49
SPEAKER_00: And it seems impossibly far.
• 12:51
SPEAKER_00: So as I walked through the village and along the harbour, sailboats were stranded, beached by a low tide.
• 12:59
SPEAKER_00: But I quickly left the ocean and was in a small village, walking along the road, and it was a quiet evening.
• 13:07
SPEAKER_00: There was very little traffic and very few people around.
• 13:10
SPEAKER_00: And soon I was passing the football ground and moving out of the village into the countryside.
• 13:17
SPEAKER_00: And quickly you come across a waterwheel, which I mistook to be the great Laxey Waterwheel.
• 13:24
SPEAKER_00: But as I learned very quickly it was not.
• 13:27
SPEAKER_00: It was a smaller will, closer to the town that was erected as a memorial.
• 13:32
SPEAKER_00: And so you go back up past the back of the water well, where there's a small trail that takes you up and onward into more streets and more quaint little houses that follow the river that takes you all the way up to Snayfell.
• 13:49
SPEAKER_00: And as you get further and further from the ocean, you begin slowly, ever so slowly, to climb on these country lanes.
• 13:57
SPEAKER_00: And then you see it, the great waterwheel.
• 14:00
SPEAKER_00: Not the fake small one, but the real genuine world's largest water wheel.
• 14:04
SPEAKER_00: It's a bit of a side tour to get up to the wheel, but well worth a visit.
• 14:09
  SPEAKER_00: It's only a few minutes.
• 14:11
SPEAKER_00: When I got there, unfortunately, it was close to tourists, but I still got a resplendent view of the great Laxi Waterwheel.
• 14:19
SPEAKER_00: I took a photo and then made my way back to the road, which was the path.
• 14:23
SPEAKER_00: And as I made my way up the country roads, I'd be just reflecting on what a great and wonderful evening it was, just calm and warm and gentle.
• 14:33
SPEAKER_00: And there looming ahead of me, so far away, it seemed at the time, was Snayfell.
• 14:39
SPEAKER_00: Now I'd made the mistake of booking a return taxi from the bungalow with a three-hour time limit.
• 14:46
SPEAKER_00: So I had three hours to get up the mountain and then back down to the bungalow.
• 14:49
SPEAKER_00: So there was a little bit of time pressure on me as I was moving up to the summit.
• 14:54
SPEAKER_00: Soon you're deep, you're into these very, very steep, single-track country lanes.
• 14:59
SPEAKER_00: The type we've been driving through for the Lake District and through Scotland, the type that are strudded by hedgerows of ferns and nettles and blackberry bushes.
• 15:12
SPEAKER_00: The type that is very difficult for drivers to see around the corner.
• 15:16
SPEAKER_00: So you have to take a lot of care when you're hiking these narrow lanes and be aware that cars may be coming up and speeding around the corner, especially on the Isle of Man, where no speed limit means absolutely no speed limit.
• 15:30
SPEAKER_00: People can drive as fast as they like.
• 15:32
SPEAKER_00: So I started climbing up, up into the hills above Laxey, around these winding roads, and I went around a corner, and wouldn't you know it, a car comes whizzing by, and I jump back into the hedge road to get out of its way.
• 15:46
SPEAKER_00: Now, fortunately, it was the only car I saw while I was on the lanes, but it was enough to remind me to stay alert.
• 15:53
SPEAKER_00: And as you climb up, you reach the village of Agniche.
• 15:57
SPEAKER_00: A three or four house little village sitting above the town of Laxey.
• 16:02
SPEAKER_00: And this is where you connect to the old miners road.
• 16:06
SPEAKER_00: The old miners road is literally that.
• 16:08
SPEAKER_00: It's an old dirt stone road that takes you up to the old mines.
• 16:13
SPEAKER_00: And there's a there's a gate at this start of the road that warns motorbikes and cyclists that this is not an entryway to go and view the TT.
• 16:24
SPEAKER_00: And those warning signs are everywhere.
• 16:27
SPEAKER_00: Now, fortunately, it doesn't say anything about hikers, but it is a little bit confusing.
• 16:31
SPEAKER_00: I remain confident that it's okay for hikers who are making their way up to Snayfell to take this road.
• 16:37
SPEAKER_00: But if you want to go watch the TT, this isn't the way you go.
• 16:41
SPEAKER_00: So made my way over the gate and began the trek along the old miners road.
• 16:47
SPEAKER_00: Now, interestingly, the miners road is very flat.
• 16:51
SPEAKER_00: It takes you all the way to the old mines, but it seems like it's a long way to get there.
• 16:57
SPEAKER_00: I think it's at least several miles of flat stone road.
• 17:02
SPEAKER_00: And as you're traveling, you notice on the other side of the valley is the old Manx Electric Railway.
• 17:08
SPEAKER_00: Now at this time of the evening, there were no railway, there was no rail cars traveling up the railway, but it you could distinctly tell where the railway ran.
• 17:18
SPEAKER_00: And you were running parallel to it.
• 17:20
SPEAKER_00: Now the old miners road is very interesting, and that this was the way that the miners from the town of Laxey would make their way to work every day.
• 17:30
SPEAKER_00: And you got that sense of history because occasionally there'd be an old ruined house sitting beside the road, almost completely derelict, save a chimney spire or a remaining wall.
• 17:42
SPEAKER_00: And as you keep up and get closer and closer, you can start seeing the mine.
• 17:47
SPEAKER_00: You see the remnants of the mine is sort of this grey scar on the landscape where the valley terminates below Snayfell.
• 17:56
SPEAKER_00: And there's some old buildings that you can see in the distance.
• 17:59
SPEAKER_00: And as you get closer and closer, you begin to make out more and more of the buildings and the old ironworks.
• 18:06
SPEAKER_00: When you finally make it to the mine, Snayfell seems no closer.
• 18:11
SPEAKER_00: It's certainly no closer in altitude because you haven't gained any.
• 18:15
SPEAKER_00: You still have a significant amount of the climb to do.
• 18:18
SPEAKER_00: And the Manx Railway is high above you on the opposite side of the valley.
• 18:22
SPEAKER_00: You can see down in the mine are some old buildings that represent the entryways to shafts.
• 18:28
SPEAKER_00: And there still seems to be some walls blocking off the creek.
• 18:32
SPEAKER_00: And so you make your way through the mine, being careful of the debris, and starting your way to cross to the other side of the valley.
• 18:41
SPEAKER_00: And as you move over to the other side of the valley, you go across the small creek that's starting to erode the trail, and come out on the other side, and there is a sign that says danger, do not enter, dangerous mineshaft.
• 18:55
SPEAKER_00: That is actually sitting to the left in the mineshaft area.
• 18:59
SPEAKER_00: And this is where the road ends and the trail begins.
• 19:03
SPEAKER_00: And you can see it distinctly.
• 19:05
SPEAKER_00: The trail is a single track cut through a field of ferns.
• 19:10
SPEAKER_00: That is the way to go.
• 19:11
SPEAKER_00: Now unfortunately, it seems to be paralleling Snayfell, and you can tell from the map that it goes from this point almost parallel to connect with the Manx Railway at the bungalow.
• 19:24
SPEAKER_00: And so while you're making some gains, it's not a direct assault up to the mountain.
• 19:30
SPEAKER_00: You have a way to go.
• 19:32
SPEAKER_00: You're sort of doing a big zigzag where you're running parallel up to the road and then you switch back up at the bungalow to climb up to Snayfell.
• 19:41
SPEAKER_00: And it still feels impossibly far away.
• 19:44
SPEAKER_00: Now there are no trees on this mountain.
• 19:46
SPEAKER_00: It's all grass and fern and bog.
• 19:49
  SPEAKER_00: And it looks massive.
• 19:51
SPEAKER_00: Not steep, not significant, no big outcrops, just one big massive hill with radio towers on top.
• 19:59
SPEAKER_00: And so you start to make your way through the ferns, and the ground underneath feels boggy and it gets boggy.
• 20:06
SPEAKER_00: Oh, this is a boggy climb, and it saps the energy out of your legs.
• 20:11
SPEAKER_00: And it's hard to follow the trail.
• 20:13
SPEAKER_00: Sometimes the trail becomes broken and it dives itself into different boggy areas where your feet sink in.
• 20:21
SPEAKER_00: And so it's a matter of self-navigating across the boggy land without getting your feet too wet.
• 20:28
SPEAKER_00: And as you're climbing up, the energy just drains out of you.
• 20:32
SPEAKER_00: But eventually, eventually you get out of the bog and you start climbing up on more solid ground.
• 20:38
SPEAKER_00: And you can see as you're getting towards the railroad, you're starting to level out and reach its elevation.
• 20:44
SPEAKER_00: And eventually you pop out on a windswept highway and you see the bungalow.
• 20:51
SPEAKER_00: Now, the Isle of Man TT had taken place the week before I arrived.
• 20:55
SPEAKER_00: And so there was still a lot of signage around the area of the bungalow, some advertising banners and some signposts labeled with the Island Man TT that may not be here if you traveled at a different time of year.
• 21:08
SPEAKER_00: And this is the point where the railway crosses the freeway.
• 21:11
SPEAKER_00: And as you're standing there with the wind blowing, you see the old Victory Cafe across the street, which is a famous landmark where people gather during the races.
• 21:21
SPEAKER_00: And cars are whipping along the freeway.
• 21:24
SPEAKER_00: Out here, there is no speed limit.
• 21:26
SPEAKER_00: And I saw lots of aggressive driving, people revving their engines or then roaring along the highway.
• 21:33
SPEAKER_00: And so I had to wait carefully time my crossing of the freeway.
• 21:37
SPEAKER_00: And when there was a gap, I popped over the freeway and joined where the bungalow is.
• 21:43
SPEAKER_00: The bungalow is in fact a railway station or a railway building.
• 21:48
SPEAKER_00: And it gives its name to the famous bungalow corner on the Isle of NTT.
• 21:53
  SPEAKER_00: I checked my watch.
• 21:54
SPEAKER_00: I had 45 minutes to get to the top and get back to get my taxi, so I had no time to waste.
• 22:02
SPEAKER_00: I found out where the trail gate was and crossed over up to the final ascent to Snayfell.
• 22:09
SPEAKER_00: I knew it was going to be tight before I could make it.
• 22:12
SPEAKER_00: And up here the wind was starting to rage, and there was no cover whatsoever.
• 22:18
SPEAKER_00: But the trail was soft and grassy with occasional rocky outcrops.
• 22:22
SPEAKER_00: But not too steep, I made quick time as I made my way up to Snayfell.
• 22:28
SPEAKER_00: Now toward the top it got a little bit steeper and a little bit steeper and a little bit steeper, and a little bit windier, and a little bit windier, and a little bit windier.
• 22:37
SPEAKER_00: And as I made my way up the final ascent to the summit hotel, 2,032 feet is what it said.
• 22:45
SPEAKER_00: There was it was a painted sign across the top of the hotel.
• 22:49
  SPEAKER_00: The wind was whipping.
• 22:52
SPEAKER_00: And I made my way behind the hotel, across a short concrete path to the clear summit of Snayfill.
• 22:59
SPEAKER_00: And when you get there, there's a trig point.
• 23:02
SPEAKER_00: But now you're exposed to the full force of the wind whipping across the Irish Sea.

SPEAKER_00: I would suggest the wind was in the region of 50 to 60 miles an hour.
• 23:14
SPEAKER_00: It was kind of challenging to stand up.
• 23:17
SPEAKER_00: And you could see for miles.
• 23:20
  SPEAKER_00: Now it wasn't a clear day.
• 23:22
SPEAKER_00: There was a little cloud and a little haze.
• 23:24
SPEAKER_00: But as I looked to the east, I could see the new modern windmills of Wales.
• 23:30
SPEAKER_00: I couldn't see Ireland, unfortunately, or any of the other kingdoms, but I did see Wales.
• 23:36
SPEAKER_00: I did see man, and I did see the kingdom of the sea, and I did see heaven.
• 23:40
SPEAKER_00: So I guess I saw four of the kingdoms.
• 23:43
  SPEAKER_00: I wasn't going to stay long.
• 23:44
SPEAKER_00: It was very windy, and I knew I had to get back to the bungalow to catch my taxi.
• 23:49
SPEAKER_00: So I came off the summit and hid in a little alcove in the summit hotel just to get my breath before the final ascent.
• 23:57
SPEAKER_00: As I'm standing there, I can hear the overhead electric wires of the Manx Rail whipping in the wind, and it was vicious.
• 24:06
SPEAKER_00: But quickly, as you come off the summit and make the descent, the wind dies down and the wind eases off.
• 24:12
SPEAKER_00: It never really stops being blustery up there, but it does die off from that 40-50 mile an hour gale that you get at the top.
• 24:20
SPEAKER_00: So I made short work of the summit, and sure enough, when I get back to the bungalow, my cab is waiting for me.
• 24:27
SPEAKER_00: So I jump in the cab and tell him to take me to my hotel back at the airport.
• 24:32
SPEAKER_00: And wouldn't you know it, my cab driver was a speed demon.
• 24:36
SPEAKER_00: We were rushing down the Isle of Man TT course at speed, down through the bungalow, back down the track, back into Douglas, past the grandstand and the finish line, past the ferry bridge, hello fairies, and out to my hotel by the airport.
• 24:54
SPEAKER_00: And what an interesting climb.
• 24:56
SPEAKER_00: Such a contrast from the wilderness of other areas of the UK, but certainly a glorious and worthwhile hike.
• 25:03
  SPEAKER_00: Now off you pop.
