- 0:43Speaker 1: To your stations, we have a movie meltdown.
- 0:45Speaker 4: It's a machine, it doesn't get scared.
- 0:51Speaker 5: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown. I am Brian.
- 0:54Speaker 4: I'm Marlena.
- 0:55Speaker 5: I'm Greg.
- 0:56Speaker 6: And we are currently on the road again. We are
- 0:59Speaker 6: currently in a vehicle heading down 64. We're going to
- 1:03Speaker 6: go to Scarefest this weekend and record our episode up
- 1:06Speaker 6: there and along the way, if you will, so.
- 1:10Speaker 5: That is the plan.
- 1:10Speaker 6: This is our Scarefest coverage. So, I guess we will
- 1:15Speaker 6: do a basic geek activities. It's been a little while
- 1:18Speaker 6: since we've all sort of, or at least even us,
- 1:21Speaker 6: have been in the same room here. So, let's run
- 1:25Speaker 6: down some basic stuff. I haven't, a lot of what
- 1:27Speaker 6: I've done is preparing for this, so I haven't watched tons.
- 1:31Speaker 7: I did watch Wreck, which, has anybody seen, Marlene, have
- 1:35Speaker 7: you seen it? It's kind of what I expected.
- 1:37Speaker 6: I mean, I'd heard a lot about it and just
- 1:39Speaker 6: never gotten around to it. So I knew what I
- 1:41Speaker 6: was in for going in. I think the biggest thing
- 1:45Speaker 6: I got from it is the fact that it's not
- 1:47Speaker 6: so much a movie. Especially, I mean, because I knew it's,
- 1:50Speaker 6: I mean, it's first-person camera. It's all kind of, you know,
- 1:54Speaker 6: the found footage idea. So it's definitely very Cloverfield-like. But
- 1:59Speaker 6: to me, I was expecting more of like, Cloverfield has
- 2:02Speaker 6: a pretty good, normal story still. I mean, it's still
- 2:05Speaker 6: pretty cohesive and plays like a pretty standard plot, even
- 2:08Speaker 6: though it's done in that, you know, Verite style. This,
- 2:12Speaker 6: I mean, the first half of it starts out like that,
- 2:14Speaker 6: but then as you go on, it really, like, the
- 2:17Speaker 6: last half hour or more.
- 2:20Speaker 5: Is just like a ride, basically.
- 2:22Speaker 6: I mean, it's like there is very little story anymore.
- 2:26Speaker 6: You're just riding along with the camera and, and there's
- 2:29Speaker 6: some awesome shots in there. So, I mean, it's still,
- 2:31Speaker 6: the whole thing is still a good experience, but I
- 2:34Speaker 6: think I was just expecting more of a movie kind
- 2:36Speaker 6: of idea. And it's, it's, it's, you know, it's a
- 2:39Speaker 6: lot more of just straightforward, you know, like it starts off,
- 2:43Speaker 6: you know, someone doing like news footage kind of coverage.
- 2:46Speaker 6: So it plays, you know, the first half of the
- 2:49Speaker 6: place sort of like that. And then everything, you know,
- 2:51Speaker 6: starts to go off the rails. And then by the end,
- 2:53Speaker 6: it's just, yeah, You lose all sense of, like, plot,
- 2:56Speaker 6: and it's just run for your damn life. So, again,
- 3:00Speaker 6: it's very effective at that. I do give them credit
- 3:02Speaker 6: for putting together, visually, a pretty amazing movie. I've heard
- 3:07Speaker 6: hit and miss stuff on the second one, so I
- 3:09Speaker 6: don't know. I might have to check out the second one.
- 3:11Speaker 6: And the remake, I've heard, is pretty cool. The American
- 3:14Speaker 6: remake is, from what I heard, pretty close to the
- 3:17Speaker 6: exact same setup.
- 3:18Speaker 5: So, again, might have to watch that one, too.
- 3:21Speaker 8: So.
- 3:22Speaker 5: That's about the only other thing I watched was the.
- 3:25Speaker 6: And this was, again, one of those that was just
- 3:27Speaker 6: sort of on, and I didn't plan on watching it,
- 3:29Speaker 6: and then I.
- 3:31Speaker 5: It was one of those, and... Marlena, how many of
- 3:34Speaker 5: the Harry Potter movies have you seen?
- 3:35Speaker 7: None. I thought you at least owned the first couple.
- 3:39Speaker 9: Yeah, but I never got through it.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Well, see, that's how I.
- 3:42Speaker 6: Was, because I remember watching one or two of them
- 3:44Speaker 6: with you and sleeping through them, which I guess we
- 3:46Speaker 6: both fell asleep at that point. So, yeah, I had
- 3:50Speaker 6: not really... For the longest time, I hadn't seen any
- 3:53Speaker 6: of them. I'd sort of started watching the first one
- 3:56Speaker 6: several times and went to sleep. I thought I'd pretty
- 3:59Speaker 6: much made it through the first one eventually, years later.
- 4:03Speaker 6: And I thought I'd watched the second one, but as
- 4:05Speaker 6: I went into it, I hadn't even seen it. I'd seen, like,
- 4:06Speaker 6: the first 20 minutes of the second one, and I
- 4:08Speaker 6: must have gone to sleep. So they were playing them
- 4:10Speaker 6: on one of the cable stations, and, you know, with
- 4:13Speaker 6: Harry Potter, there's not a lot to cut out. So
- 4:14Speaker 6: at least I didn't have to worry about it being
- 4:16Speaker 6: a badly edited version. So I ended up kind of
- 4:19Speaker 6: watching the first two of them, And here's what I
- 4:23Speaker 6: have to say. I mean, as much as we keep, like,
- 4:25Speaker 6: bitching about them trying to, you know, we're always so
- 4:29Speaker 6: nostalgic for, oh, man, they don't make stuff like the
- 4:31Speaker 6: Never a New Story. They don't make stuff like the
- 4:33Speaker 6: Dark Crystal. I finally realized that's what these are. Like,
- 4:37Speaker 6: they really are this generation's version of that because they're,
- 4:41Speaker 6: I mean, that's what we always say about those because
- 4:43Speaker 6: when they make crappy movies now, they're just crappy. Whereas,
- 4:46Speaker 6: you know, those movies were well-made. The Harry Potter stuff
- 4:49Speaker 6: is so well-made. And I kind of knew that, but
- 4:51Speaker 6: I'd never just sat down and watched it. But by
- 4:53Speaker 6: the time you get to, like, the big finale of
- 4:55Speaker 6: that second movie, I'm like, this is pretty epic. And,
- 4:58Speaker 6: I mean, this is pretty decent special effects, especially for
- 5:02Speaker 6: the years ago when that.
- 5:03Speaker 5: One was made.
- 5:04Speaker 6: And, I mean, like, it's a pretty decent adventure story.
- 5:07Speaker 6: It's actually got real actors in it. I mean, everything
- 5:10Speaker 6: about it is pretty... I mean, not that this is
- 5:12Speaker 6: news to anybody, but it's funny that, you know, because
- 5:14Speaker 6: we were always... kind of making that complaint that they
- 5:16Speaker 6: don't make good stories for kids anymore that are not,
- 5:20Speaker 6: you know, stupid, dumbed-down stuff.
- 5:22Speaker 7: These are pretty hardcore stories.
- 5:23Speaker 6: There's a lot of violence in them, and as you
- 5:25Speaker 6: get further in the series, I know they start killing
- 5:27Speaker 6: people off. So, I mean, I finally came to that
- 5:30Speaker 6: conclusion that, yeah, what we're always complaining about is out there.
- 5:33Speaker 6: It's at least the Harry Potter. There's probably a few others. But, yeah,
- 5:38Speaker 6: I just, that was kind of interesting that I finally
- 5:41Speaker 6: realized that, This is that generation's never-ending story in Dark Crystal.
- 5:45Speaker 5: Sure. I've seen them all. I'll admit it. I'll come
- 5:47Speaker 5: out of the closet. Well, you also have kids. Well,
- 5:50Speaker 5: you know, my kids haven't seen any of them. That
- 5:51Speaker 5: wasn't him? No, no, no, no. I had the opportunity
- 5:56Speaker 5: at a job that I could listen to things nonstop,
- 5:59Speaker 5: and I listened to all the books with Stephen Fry
- 6:04Speaker 5: reading them. Oh, that's kind of cool. Which was... If
- 6:07Speaker 5: you ever get the chance on a long trip, or
- 6:11Speaker 5: if you have a job where you can sit down
- 6:13Speaker 5: with headphones, it was a treat, and it was a fantastic,
- 6:17Speaker 5: better than reading or movies could ever portray. I think
- 6:22Speaker 5: he did a fantastic job at it, and then turned
- 6:25Speaker 5: around and watched all the movies afterwards, and yeah, I'll
- 6:28Speaker 5: admit it, I'm a geek. I loved them. I think
- 6:31Speaker 5: they're as good as anything that I grew up with,
- 6:34Speaker 5: and if I were a pre-teen now, I would probably
- 6:38Speaker 5: be going nuts over the whole thing. I think they're
- 6:41Speaker 5: that good. Especially in the laters. Yeah, because they bring
- 6:46Speaker 5: in more... Especially the movies, they bring in darker directors.
- 6:50Speaker 5: By the third one, they start bringing in real.
- 6:52Speaker 6: I mean, Columbus did a good job on the first couple,
- 6:54Speaker 6: but he was just sort of setting up the rules
- 6:56Speaker 6: in the universe, and then they handed him.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Off to people that wanted to do more.
- 6:59Speaker 6: And that's kind of what's cool with these, is because
- 7:01Speaker 6: it's such a long series, they really do give it
- 7:04Speaker 6: a chance for the characters to grow and get older
- 7:07Speaker 6: with the audience which does give it a an excuse
- 7:10Speaker 6: to be kind of darker as it goes along yeah i.
- 7:12Speaker 5: It it becomes it becomes extremely dark by and and
- 7:17Speaker 5: by the end of the deathly hollows i'm i'm excited
- 7:20Speaker 5: about that i think it's going to be a a
- 7:22Speaker 5: really good i don't like that they're necessarily making it
- 7:24Speaker 5: into two films but doesn't surprise me a bit actually
- 7:28Speaker 5: yeah Well, it doesn't surprise me, but I don't necessarily
- 7:31Speaker 5: like it. I mean, it is nice that you're going
- 7:34Speaker 5: to be able to get the full story by watching two,
- 7:37Speaker 5: but you know that it's still done for money.
- 7:40Speaker 7: Oh, yeah.
- 7:40Speaker 5: Because the other films could have been made... The past
- 7:46Speaker 5: one that was released last year, there was so much
- 7:49Speaker 5: that was missing from it, and they focused more on
- 7:53Speaker 5: the teenage love aspect with all the kids... than the
- 7:58Speaker 5: fantastic adventure story that also went on during the movie.
- 8:02Speaker 5: And I think they really lost some with it. Since
- 8:06Speaker 5: they're selling out now and making two movies, why couldn't
- 8:10Speaker 5: they make two movies for the last one? That's kind
- 8:13Speaker 5: of what I thought.
- 8:13Speaker 6: I was like, I don't know why they haven't broken
- 8:15Speaker 6: this up and made it even longer a series.
- 8:18Speaker 5: Because, I mean.
- 8:19Speaker 6: They've got the built-in audience. They've got all the actors
- 8:21Speaker 6: signed on except the ones that keep kicking off. So
- 8:24Speaker 6: it's like... Well, the.
- 8:25Speaker 5: Actors are getting too old. That's the problem, I think.
- 8:27Speaker 7: Kind of.
- 8:28Speaker 6: But, I mean, if they were on top of it
- 8:29Speaker 6: and they were cranking them out, I mean, they could
- 8:31Speaker 6: go ahead and shoot most of the footage for, like,
- 8:33Speaker 6: the storyline.
- 8:35Speaker 10: Right.
- 8:35Speaker 6: And then hang on to those last ones and just
- 8:37Speaker 6: start adding in special effects. And the longer they wait
- 8:39Speaker 6: on those, the special effects get better and better over
- 8:41Speaker 6: the years.
- 8:42Speaker 5: So it's like.
- 8:43Speaker 6: they really should have just started shooting all the footage
- 8:46Speaker 6: for the last couple books, you know, these last few years,
- 8:49Speaker 6: and just sit on them, and like, again, if they're
- 8:51Speaker 6: worried about making money, just keep putting out another movie every,
- 8:54Speaker 6: you know, six months or a year, and again, it's,
- 8:58Speaker 6: I can see them, that being a goal just to
- 9:00Speaker 6: make money with that, but at the same time, I
- 9:02Speaker 6: feel like if there's a better story there, if you
- 9:04Speaker 6: end up telling a better story by breaking it up
- 9:06Speaker 6: into two movies, I'm fine with that. It's like I
- 9:09Speaker 6: would rather have a better story than one that's hacked
- 9:11Speaker 6: up and crammed into an hour and a half or
- 9:13Speaker 6: two hours than just break it up and make it
- 9:16Speaker 6: three or four hours and have a better arc to
- 9:18Speaker 6: the story. And granted, they'll get a hell of a
- 9:21Speaker 6: lot of extra money out of it.
- 9:22Speaker 5: I wouldn't mind. If it's good, I say make it.
- 9:25Speaker 5: That's how I've always been. If you can, I think
- 9:28Speaker 5: they proved that with The Lord of the Rings. If
- 9:30Speaker 5: it's good enough, people will see it, people will watch it,
- 9:34Speaker 5: and you can make a ton of money off it.
- 9:35Speaker 7: And those are ridiculously long.
- 9:37Speaker 6: I mean, if you look at the uncut versions, by
- 9:39Speaker 6: the time you put all of it back together, I mean,
- 9:41Speaker 6: it's a day's worth of watching a movie. But it worked, and,
- 9:44Speaker 6: you know, people loved it, and it told the story
- 9:47Speaker 6: as close as you can get on those kind of books. So, yeah,
- 9:49Speaker 6: I mean, they did a good job with that, and
- 9:51Speaker 6: I think that's probably what they could have done with
- 9:53Speaker 6: Harry Potter, and I don't know why they waited until
- 9:56Speaker 6: this last book when they realized, oh.
- 9:57Speaker 5: God, we're running out of books. Right, right.
- 9:59Speaker 7: I don't know, they really should have thought ahead on that.
- 10:02Speaker 5: There definitely is enough material that you can make two
- 10:05Speaker 5: movies out of the last one, but again, I say,
- 10:08Speaker 5: why not do it with them all?
- 10:09Speaker 6: Well, I heard that with the third one, like from
- 10:11Speaker 6: right off the bat, as soon as Columbus left, they
- 10:13Speaker 6: started condensing that third book down, and people were like, oh,
- 10:16Speaker 6: they missed all these subplots and stuff going on, and
- 10:18Speaker 6: I'm just like, From that point on, I was like,
- 10:20Speaker 6: why don't you guys spread this out and just do
- 10:22Speaker 6: the story right? And in the meantime, you'll make a
- 10:25Speaker 6: hell of a lot of money. But they're going to
- 10:26Speaker 6: do that anyway, so I don't worry about that. That
- 10:29Speaker 6: money is built in at this point, so.
- 10:31Speaker 5: You know what.
- 10:31Speaker 4: I always thought is really strange about the whole Harry
- 10:33Speaker 4: Potter franchise? Most people bitch about movie versus book, movie
- 10:38Speaker 4: versus book. And, like, with the Harry Potter movie and book,
- 10:41Speaker 4: people don't really do that. They're kind of, like, one thing. Like,
- 10:44Speaker 4: they go to... They are, like, hand in hand. Like,
- 10:46Speaker 4: I don't hear as many people complaining about, like, it wasn't, like,
- 10:49Speaker 4: the book at all.
- 10:50Speaker 9: You know, like.
- 10:51Speaker 6: No, I do, but only with super hardcore. Like, the
- 10:53Speaker 6: people that are into it will, like, curse the movies.
- 10:56Speaker 3: Like.
- 10:57Speaker 6: And what's funny is the worst place that I heard
- 11:00Speaker 6: that was at the Harry and the Potter show. And yes,
- 11:03Speaker 6: I'm dork enough to have been to a Harry and
- 11:05Speaker 6: the Potter show. What's funny is I'd been to three
- 11:09Speaker 6: Harry and the Potter shows before I'd ever read a book.
- 11:13Speaker 6: I've still not read a book. Or seen any of
- 11:15Speaker 6: the movies. But I'd seen them play three different times.
- 11:18Speaker 7: Live because I thought it was such a ridiculous idea
- 11:22Speaker 7: that I was like, oh shit, I have to see this.
- 11:25Speaker 5: And the thing is, they were good.
- 11:26Speaker 6: And then I was like, what's funny is by the
- 11:28Speaker 6: first time, they were in front of a bookstore out
- 11:30Speaker 6: by the sidewalk, and there were like 20 people there.
- 11:33Speaker 6: By the second time, they were in like, well, pretty good.
- 11:36Speaker 6: They were in like the teen club kind of thing,
- 11:39Speaker 6: but there was a huge crowd. I mean, that was
- 11:41Speaker 6: the one that you were saying, like people were sitting
- 11:42Speaker 6: on the floor because they were about to pass out.
- 11:44Speaker 6: It was freaking hot because there were so many kids
- 11:46Speaker 6: packed in that place. But they were like, already people
- 11:49Speaker 6: were freaking out for them at that point. By the
- 11:51Speaker 6: third show I saw of them, They had an auditorium
- 11:55Speaker 6: that would house most good-sized label-based bands, and they were
- 12:01Speaker 6: like the fucking Beatles. Pre-teen girls were screaming and losing
- 12:05Speaker 6: their damn minds for these dorky guys. And I was
- 12:08Speaker 6: just like, you guys are on to something. And I
- 12:11Speaker 6: don't know if they're still putting stuff out. I have
- 12:13Speaker 6: not seen them touring lately, but I was like, holy shit,
- 12:16Speaker 6: you guys are on to something here.
- 12:18Speaker 4: Wow.
- 12:19Speaker 7: Because, yeah, girls lost their damn minds.
- 12:21Speaker 6: But what was funny, and that was my point, is
- 12:23Speaker 6: that at those shows, especially like that third one, there was.
- 12:27Speaker 7: A very anti-movie vibe. Like, they were on stage being like.
- 12:31Speaker 11: Screw those movies. It's all about the book, man. And
- 12:33Speaker 11: the crowd was cheering. And they were like, we love
- 12:35Speaker 11: the books. Reading's awesome. I mean, it was funny. As
- 12:40Speaker 11: much as I don't read and I make fun of
- 12:42Speaker 11: reading all the time.
- 12:43Speaker 9: How do you make fun of reading?
- 12:45Speaker 6: Because I don't like them books. I'll make fun of
- 12:49Speaker 6: reading because I want to. Because I'm a movie dork
- 12:53Speaker 6: and I'd rather watch a movie.
- 12:55Speaker 7: I'm a dork.
- 12:55Speaker 9: But I still read.
- 12:58Speaker 7: I can't read. It's not funny.
- 13:00Speaker 6: But what's funny is that it was one of those,
- 13:03Speaker 6: even for somebody who makes fun of people who read, nerds,
- 13:05Speaker 6: it was so awesome in a way, just as, you know,
- 13:09Speaker 6: what basic level of humanity I have, that saw all
- 13:12Speaker 6: these kids that excited about reading. I was like, once again,
- 13:16Speaker 6: I was like, you've got to give these guys credit and,
- 13:18Speaker 6: you know, the J.K. Rawlings and everybody for, like, totally...
- 13:22Speaker 6: inciting an entire generation of kids to learn how to
- 13:25Speaker 6: read you know i'm just like to be involved in
- 13:27Speaker 6: reading to be fucking excited about reading it's like that's
- 13:31Speaker 6: kind of amazing really so i you know and i
- 13:34Speaker 6: was dork enough to go to a rock show about
- 13:36Speaker 6: reading so yeah i mean you gotta you gotta give
- 13:39Speaker 6: them credit everybody involved in that they really kind of
- 13:42Speaker 6: stepped up and delivered on all of those fronts books movies.
- 13:46Speaker 7: Rock bands you name it it was all pretty damned amazing.
- 13:52Speaker 12: Oh, Lord.
- 13:52Speaker 5: I have, not to hijack the discussion, but since we're
- 13:55Speaker 5: already on Harry Potter, I have to share this moment.
- 13:58Speaker 13: Uh-oh.
- 13:59Speaker 5: I went and saw the last Harry Potter film last summer.
- 14:04Speaker 5: when it was released in the Dollar Theater. I wasn't
- 14:07Speaker 5: going to pay full price. And I went alone because
- 14:10Speaker 5: I'm that much of a dork. My wife, though she's
- 14:13Speaker 5: read all the Harry Potter films, she's not going to
- 14:15Speaker 5: go see it.
- 14:15Speaker 7: She's a real nerd.
- 14:16Speaker 5: She's a real nerd. She does, she really, she reads...
- 14:19Speaker 5: Book reader. Ten books to one movie she reads. So
- 14:23Speaker 5: it was a very empty theater at one of the
- 14:28Speaker 5: Dollar Theaters that's now closed. And there were two... large
- 14:34Speaker 5: african-american women that sat right in front of me and
- 14:39Speaker 5: gave me this gave me the space the the seat
- 14:41Speaker 5: the um the gay seat you know to see between.
- 14:44Speaker 7: We're not together i mean we're together but we're not.
- 14:47Speaker 5: Together they probably needed this and i'm not saying this
- 14:50Speaker 5: to make fun of them in any way because these
- 14:52Speaker 5: turned out to be my best friends for the next
- 14:55Speaker 5: two hours they they gave me the seat in between
- 14:58Speaker 5: they probably needed the seat but that's that's beside the
- 15:00Speaker 5: point um They knew these books backwards and forwards.
- 15:05Speaker 6: Wow.
- 15:06Speaker 5: Every single bit about it. And commented along with the movie.
- 15:12Speaker 7: Oh, wow.
- 15:12Speaker 5: Almost as good as any Mystery Science Theater show episode ever. Like, Ron,
- 15:19Speaker 5: you better not be eating that candy. Hermione's going to
- 15:22Speaker 5: be mad at you. And just that, you know, they
- 15:25Speaker 5: knew everything that was going to happen. And I was crying.
- 15:28Speaker 5: I was laughing so hard. They knew it was a
- 15:29Speaker 5: performance to them.
- 15:31Speaker 8: But.
- 15:31Speaker 7: That's worth a dollar right there.
- 15:33Speaker 5: It was worth a dollar. And I almost said, next
- 15:36Speaker 5: time you go to the movie theater, I'm coming with you.
- 15:39Speaker 5: That's how good they were. They were like, don't worry,
- 15:41Speaker 5: Harry Potter, Dumbledore's told him to. And it just... You know,
- 15:46Speaker 5: they were, again, they were retching it up on purpose.
- 15:49Speaker 5: Making it over the top. And I just had a
- 15:52Speaker 5: ball with these two ladies. And again, I knew the
- 15:56Speaker 5: stories very well. They knew... better than i did that
- 15:59Speaker 5: was for sure.
- 16:00Speaker 6: Ladies don't get the wrong idea but here's my number
- 16:03Speaker 6: i want to go see another movie with you again
- 16:04Speaker 6: in the future.
- 16:05Speaker 5: To be out there i think they were from clarksville
- 16:08Speaker 5: indiana and they were uh they were a riot they
- 16:13Speaker 5: um i would pay their way into the movie that's
- 16:15Speaker 5: how good they were so uh but.
- 16:18Speaker 6: Anyway we should get them and do like a commentary
- 16:20Speaker 6: track and they could if.
- 16:22Speaker 7: You can track them down that would be awesome.
- 16:25Speaker 5: So, yeah, it was one of the best experiences I'd
- 16:27Speaker 5: ever had in a movie theater. Oh, any other Harry
- 16:31Speaker 5: Potter tales?
- 16:32Speaker 9: Not that I can recall.
- 16:35Speaker 12: Oh, well.
- 16:35Speaker 5: A Harry Potter episode. Yeah, really.
- 16:38Speaker 6: We launched into a Harry Potter thing there, which I
- 16:40Speaker 6: didn't see coming, and I still haven't seen anything past
- 16:42Speaker 6: the second movie. But now, I mean, especially since they're
- 16:46Speaker 6: coming to the end, I can round out the series
- 16:48Speaker 6: and actually watch them all, so that'll be kind of.
- 16:51Speaker 5: Interesting, but... Yeah, that was the bulk of mine.
- 16:54Speaker 6: Was that and getting ready to head up here today. So, Marlena,
- 16:59Speaker 6: would you like to go next? Yes.
- 17:01Speaker 4: Well, I have had a pretty crazy couple of weeks.
- 17:07Speaker 4: I've had some movie watching, not a whole lot. But
- 17:13Speaker 4: a couple of Sundays ago, I did get to see
- 17:15Speaker 4: David Sedaris.
- 17:17Speaker 5: Yeah, you sucked, by the way.
- 17:18Speaker 12: I know.
- 17:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 17:21Speaker 9: He was hilarious, as usual.
- 17:22Speaker 4: And this was definitely the most enjoyable experience of watching
- 17:25Speaker 4: David Sedaris because I didn't have to stand outside in
- 17:27Speaker 4: the sweltering heat for two hours.
- 17:29Speaker 5: That was the time I saw him.
- 17:30Speaker 4: With, like, a crowd of hippies. And, yeah, it was funny.
- 17:35Speaker 4: It was the only time it wasn't free. I had
- 17:38Speaker 4: to pay $ 45, but, you know, whatever.
- 17:41Speaker 7: He's still good.
- 17:41Speaker 5: He's worth it.
- 17:42Speaker 9: Yeah, he's worth it.
- 17:44Speaker 5: I just didn't have $ 45.
- 17:45Speaker 7: I know.
- 17:45Speaker 8: I know.
- 17:46Speaker 4: But it was amazing.
- 17:47Speaker 9: He's always hilarious.
- 17:50Speaker 14: Hilarious.
- 17:51Speaker 15: Yeah.
- 17:52Speaker 9: See, I've watched a.
- 17:54Speaker 4: Couple of movies I'm not too proud of. Get Him
- 17:57Speaker 4: to the Greek with Jonas Hill and Russell Brand.
- 18:01Speaker 5: That looked terrible.
- 18:03Speaker 6: I've actually heard people say it was okay, but I
- 18:05Speaker 6: thought the trailer looked terrible.
- 18:07Speaker 4: It's a typical comedy. It had its funny parts like
- 18:10Speaker 4: any of those stupid... You know, it's like any dumbass,
- 18:13Speaker 4: lowbrow Adam Sandler movie or... any movie like that has
- 18:18Speaker 4: its parts that are just hilarious you know it's not
- 18:21Speaker 4: yeah it's cheap it's like cheap shots you know it's
- 18:24Speaker 4: not like intelligent like Wes Anderson humor or you know
- 18:28Speaker 4: it's nothing like that but you know I definitely laughed
- 18:33Speaker 4: Russell Brand is definitely an idiot that's what I've said
- 18:38Speaker 4: for you I don't know how he landed Katy Perry
- 18:40Speaker 4: but she's definitely an idiot too yeah but she's so
- 18:46Speaker 4: pretty she's.
- 18:47Speaker 6: Still retarded yeah I mean that in the best possible
- 18:50Speaker 6: way I don't mean that in a special way I
- 18:53Speaker 6: mean she's just not right.
- 18:55Speaker 8: Yeah yeah as in not as in ill-fated she's literally
- 19:00Speaker 8: not not in the mental.
- 19:02Speaker 5: As in her in her personality.
- 19:06Speaker 4: Wise yeah yeah but um uh what else did I
- 19:10Speaker 4: watch oh oh there's a lot of movies I like
- 19:14Speaker 4: to start watching movies and then fall asleep I do
- 19:17Speaker 4: this all the time. I started to watch Sometimes They
- 19:20Speaker 4: Come Back, which I think I remember that from when
- 19:23Speaker 4: I was a kid because, like, my mom and my
- 19:25Speaker 4: stepdad went through this, like, weird phase where they were
- 19:29Speaker 4: obsessed with Stephen King. I guess every, like, adult did, but, uh, yeah,
- 19:34Speaker 4: they were, like, obsessed with Stephen King and also the
- 19:36Speaker 4: Warlock movies. I remember this from when I was younger. And, uh.
- 19:41Speaker 5: You wait till next week because Julian Sands is there.
- 19:44Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 19:45Speaker 16: Awesome.
- 19:46Speaker 9: But, I should get his autograph from my mom.
- 19:49Speaker 8: You should.
- 19:50Speaker 4: She'd be like, what the fuck?
- 19:51Speaker 6: Who?
- 19:51Speaker 16: Who?
- 19:52Speaker 9: I don't remember those movies.
- 19:53Speaker 6: Get her a copy of the movie to go with it.
- 19:56Speaker 5: Reminder.
- 19:57Speaker 4: I'm sure.
- 19:58Speaker 9: My mom smokes a lot of weed. Her memory is shot.
- 20:02Speaker 6: I can't say that's news to me, but you outed her.
- 20:07Speaker 4: I know.
- 20:08Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 20:09Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 20:10Speaker 4: Yeah, but I lost my train of thought there. She
- 20:15Speaker 4: must have smoked weed when she was pregnant with me.
- 20:17Speaker 9: That would explain things.
- 20:19Speaker 4: It would explain a lot.
- 20:20Speaker 5: You fell asleep watching.
- 20:22Speaker 4: Sometimes they come back, yeah. And there was one movie. Oh,
- 20:26Speaker 4: I watched Machete in completion. I actually didn't fall asleep
- 20:29Speaker 4: during that one, which was strange, because I was laying
- 20:32Speaker 4: in bed and ready to fall asleep.
- 20:33Speaker 5: It's a lot of fun.
- 20:36Speaker 4: Yeah, it was a lot of fun. It was ridiculous
- 20:39Speaker 4: and over the top, and it was very much a
- 20:42Speaker 4: Robert Rodriguez movie, which made me extremely happy.
- 20:45Speaker 5: And you'll get to see Danny Trejo. I know.
- 20:47Speaker 9: I love Danny Trejo.
- 20:48Speaker 12: Yay.
- 20:48Speaker 4: There's not a mob of them.
- 20:50Speaker 13: I know.
- 20:51Speaker 4: There will be.
- 20:51Speaker 5: We'll still be able to see him. I don't know
- 20:53Speaker 5: that we'll get anywhere near him.
- 20:54Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 20:54Speaker 9: I won't get to touch him. I won't get to
- 20:57Speaker 9: touch his long, silky hair.
- 20:59Speaker 5: You might if you ask.
- 21:01Speaker 1: Please.
- 21:01Speaker 4: Please, Danny Trejo. Let me touch your hair.
- 21:03Speaker 5: Just once. Besides being a female.
- 21:05Speaker 6: Yeah, because if I ask girls that, they usually don't.
- 21:09Speaker 4: They're like, uh....
- 21:12Speaker 12: Uh.
- 21:13Speaker 5: No.
- 21:13Speaker 9: Awesome.
- 21:20Speaker 4: I don't know if I talked about this or not.
- 21:22Speaker 4: I don't know if this has been since the last time,
- 21:24Speaker 4: but I also saw Dracula. Did I get to talk
- 21:27Speaker 4: about that?
- 21:28Speaker 5: I think it was sold out last time.
- 21:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 21:31Speaker 9: I've been trying to see it for, like, the whole
- 21:33Speaker 9: month of October.
- 21:35Speaker 4: And it's, like, almost impossible to get two seats together
- 21:37Speaker 4: and not pay, like, a billion dollars. But I went
- 21:40Speaker 4: with my mom, and we ended up not getting seats together.
- 21:43Speaker 4: But I was in the very front row.
- 21:45Speaker 5: You appreciated that.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I really did.
- 21:47Speaker 12: I really did.
- 21:48Speaker 4: But I was in the front row, and it was amazing.
- 21:51Speaker 4: I mean, like, the sets rose out of the floor, and, like,
- 21:54Speaker 4: all the actors were over the top, especially Renfield. He
- 21:57Speaker 4: was amazing.
- 21:58Speaker 9: He was so over the top and just hilarious. He
- 22:00Speaker 9: stole the whole show, actually. But Dracula, I mean, he
- 22:03Speaker 9: had amazing abs.
- 22:05Speaker 4: And he... And I liked his portrayal of Dracula quite
- 22:09Speaker 4: a bit. I mean, he was like a Romanian gypsy
- 22:12Speaker 4: kind of Dracula, which I would imagine Dracula would have been.
- 22:15Speaker 4: Not like this, like, over-the-top Transylvanian fake accent.
- 22:20Speaker 9: You know, it was, like, really authentic. You know, it wasn't...
- 22:23Speaker 9: I mean, not like Dracula was real, but... It was real.
- 22:28Speaker 12: He was, yeah.
- 22:29Speaker 4: Vlad!
- 22:30Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 22:31Speaker 4: But it was just... Everyone was amazing.
- 22:33Speaker 5: I mean.
- 22:35Speaker 9: The actors were so talented.
- 22:37Speaker 4: The sets, like I said, they rose out of the floor.
- 22:39Speaker 4: And it was just, like, really small. I mean, the
- 22:42Speaker 4: space was, like, the size of a living room. And
- 22:44Speaker 4: for them to do everything that they did, like, in
- 22:47Speaker 4: such a small space was just, it just blew my mind.
- 22:50Speaker 9: It was crazy. And, oh, let's see. What else? What
- 22:56Speaker 9: else have I done?
- 22:59Speaker 4: Oh, funny story. So I had a seizure and broke
- 23:02Speaker 4: my tooth.
- 23:03Speaker 5: That is a funny.
- 23:06Speaker 13: Story.
- 23:06Speaker 5: Man, I wish I could have.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Had a seizure. Well, that's not the funny part. That
- 23:11Speaker 4: part sucked. But so my tooth broke off and I
- 23:16Speaker 4: couldn't find it. And a couple of days later, it
- 23:20Speaker 4: like apparently it went through the inside of my lip
- 23:22Speaker 4: and stayed there for a couple of days and then
- 23:24Speaker 4: came out.
- 23:25Speaker 9: The top of my lip.
- 23:26Speaker 4: So I had to pull a piece of my tooth
- 23:28Speaker 4: out of my lip with a pair of tweezers. It
- 23:31Speaker 4: was really gross. And I was just, like, shocked. It was, like,
- 23:33Speaker 4: one of those, like, what the fuck moments. Like, it was, like,
- 23:38Speaker 4: it was, like, something from, like, Hostel.
- 23:40Speaker 9: It was just, it was gross. But very hilarious in retrospect.
- 23:46Speaker 5: When Jeff Goldblum first realizes that he's starting to shit.
- 23:49Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 23:50Speaker 5: What's this?
- 23:51Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 23:52Speaker 4: It was, it really was, like, one of those moments. Like,
- 23:54Speaker 4: no one ever wants to pull a piece of their
- 23:56Speaker 4: tooth from their lip days after they film.
- 24:01Speaker 9: Like broke it which.
- 24:02Speaker 4: It's fixed by the way i'm not running around like
- 24:04Speaker 4: a hillbilly so yeah broken in half tooth that's so
- 24:09Speaker 4: cool i know it is badass.
- 24:11Speaker 5: You can't i know as long as you tell people
- 24:13Speaker 5: you got it in a fight i.
- 24:15Speaker 4: Know and not like i just fell and started crappie
- 24:19Speaker 4: flopping on the floor.
- 24:20Speaker 9: And that's not near as cool i know i know
- 24:24Speaker 9: It's a shame.
- 24:26Speaker 4: I really was like, man, I wonder if I can
- 24:28Speaker 4: get a gold tooth. I actually thought about that. I'm
- 24:31Speaker 4: not going to lie. I was just like, because the
- 24:33Speaker 4: night before I saw a guy with a gold tooth
- 24:35Speaker 4: and I kept thinking like, whoa, that guy's pretty cool.
- 24:38Speaker 5: We might disown you from the show.
- 24:41Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 24:41Speaker 5: A gold tooth might be a reason to be booted.
- 24:43Speaker 4: Off the show. No, I mean, it was. He was
- 24:47Speaker 4: just like this weird, like, really jittery, like, cracked out, like,
- 24:51Speaker 4: tiny little white guy and he had a gold tooth
- 24:53Speaker 4: and I was like, whoa, I like this guy.
- 24:56Speaker 5: Maybe you can get your name spelled out on your grill.
- 24:58Speaker 5: How about that?
- 24:59Speaker 9: Oh, that'd be awesome.
- 24:59Speaker 4: That's a lot of teeth.
- 25:00Speaker 5: I know. You've got a long name. You're in trouble.
- 25:03Speaker 12: I know.
- 25:04Speaker 5: You're going to have to smile a lot.
- 25:05Speaker 4: Actually, I don't have as many teeth as most people
- 25:08Speaker 4: because when I got braces, they removed my front teeth
- 25:11Speaker 4: for some, not my very front teeth, but like teeth
- 25:13Speaker 4: in the front. So every time I go, when I
- 25:15Speaker 4: was at the dentist, they're like, what happened to you?
- 25:18Speaker 4: Why don't you have as many teeth? What happened? And
- 25:21Speaker 4: I was like, oh, the dentist took....
- 25:24Speaker 9: I was like, well, the dentist took them out?
- 25:28Speaker 4: And they're like, what dentist would take out your front teeth?
- 25:31Speaker 4: And I was like, the university dentist?
- 25:34Speaker 9: And they're like, oh, okay.
- 25:34Speaker 5: This wasn't in a concentration camp.
- 25:37Speaker 4: I know, I know.
- 25:38Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 25:40Speaker 5: Well, it was cheaper there. I mean, you know.
- 25:42Speaker 9: It was cheaper there.
- 25:43Speaker 5: It's like, we needed some space.
- 25:45Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 25:46Speaker 4: They're like, let's just do this the easy way. That's okay.
- 25:50Speaker 4: It's not noticeable. No one looks at me and they're like,
- 25:52Speaker 4: what the fuck? You're missing teeth. I've never had anyone
- 25:56Speaker 4: do that.
- 25:56Speaker 5: You just like to weird out dentists.
- 25:58Speaker 1: I know.
- 25:58Speaker 4: We are in Kentucky.
- 26:01Speaker 9: Yeah, exactly.
- 26:02Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 26:02Speaker 4: Yeah, people are missing teeth all over in Kentucky. I mean,
- 26:05Speaker 4: it's so.
- 26:07Speaker 9: And I mean, like, I have a full grill.
- 26:09Speaker 4: It's just, if you're counting and you know the names
- 26:12Speaker 4: of the teeth, I'm just missing certain ones. You're hiding
- 26:15Speaker 4: the ones you're missing.
- 26:17Speaker 9: It's not a huge deal. Oh, this just reminds me
- 26:21Speaker 9: of something I watched.
- 26:22Speaker 4: So speaking of the Sedaris's and teeth, Amy Sedaris came
- 26:26Speaker 4: out with a new book this week. So I was
- 26:27Speaker 4: watching a bunch of Amy Sedaris videos. And I watched
- 26:31Speaker 4: her on this one. She was like on Yo Gabba Gabba.
- 26:35Speaker 4: I don't know if anyone's familiar with that show. That
- 26:37Speaker 4: show is so fucking weird. Why wouldn't she be on
- 26:40Speaker 4: that show? Are you kidding me?
- 26:41Speaker 5: Flaming Lips were on there this week.
- 26:43Speaker 9: Like, the weirdest band. Like, popular bands.
- 26:46Speaker 4: And, like, the first time I ever saw it, I
- 26:47Speaker 4: was just flipping through channels and Elijah Wood was on there.
- 26:50Speaker 4: And I was like, what? What's going on? The show
- 26:53Speaker 4: confuses the hell out of me. Like, I don't understand.
- 26:55Speaker 4: I feel like it's the show that people who do
- 26:58Speaker 4: a lot of drugs would be really into.
- 27:00Speaker 9: And also children.
- 27:01Speaker 5: It's kind of weird. Now the Teletubbies is not so cool.
- 27:03Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 27:04Speaker 9: But, I mean, like, Yo Gabba Gabba is way cooler
- 27:07Speaker 9: than Teletubbies.
- 27:07Speaker 4: Teletubbies was just stupid.
- 27:09Speaker 5: Yeah, there was nothing to it.
- 27:11Speaker 9: Except for drugs and kids.
- 27:12Speaker 17: Yeah, I know.
- 27:14Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 27:14Speaker 9: But she was on there as a tooth fairy, and
- 27:17Speaker 9: it gave me nightmares. It was just weird. It was
- 27:20Speaker 9: very weird.
- 27:22Speaker 4: Oh, yes, and I'm sure everyone in the world did,
- 27:24Speaker 4: because I got, like, 50 billion text messages and messages.
- 27:27Speaker 9: From, did you watch The Walking Dead?
- 27:29Speaker 4: Oh, my God, did you watch The Walking Dead?
- 27:31Speaker 9: Apparently.
- 27:31Speaker 5: I did watch it.
- 27:32Speaker 9: Yeah, I watched The Walking Dead.
- 27:33Speaker 4: It was awesome.
- 27:35Speaker 9: It is.
- 27:36Speaker 4: I kind of am worried. This is a concern that
- 27:38Speaker 4: everyone has. They're like, how far is this going to go? Like,
- 27:41Speaker 4: Is it going to drop off after a couple of episodes?
- 27:45Speaker 5: I think it scales back a little bit.
- 27:47Speaker 6: From what I've heard, it's following the comics pretty close.
- 27:52Speaker 6: Because actually they're doing it pretty tight too. They've got
- 27:56Speaker 6: seasons worth of stuff if they follow. Because what's going
- 27:59Speaker 6: on in that first hour and a half is like
- 28:01Speaker 6: the first 15 pages. That's how close they're following it.
- 28:04Speaker 6: But basically they're... From what I hear, by where the
- 28:08Speaker 6: second one and third one pick up, they actually move
- 28:10Speaker 6: into one location.
- 28:12Speaker 7: It's more of a smaller scale, so I think they
- 28:14Speaker 7: really are going to be able.
- 28:16Speaker 5: It's not going.
- 28:16Speaker 6: To be as crazy big budget as it was this
- 28:19Speaker 6: first time, especially with, you know, you had your big-name director,
- 28:23Speaker 6: where I think he's signing off now and going to
- 28:24Speaker 6: hand it over to other people. So I think he
- 28:27Speaker 6: claimed the big showy win with the giant cityscapes and
- 28:30Speaker 6: the wasteland and all that.
- 28:31Speaker 5: For that first episode.
- 28:33Speaker 6: From there, I think it's going to be one location,
- 28:35Speaker 6: smaller scale, tight-knit group of people, and you're going to
- 28:38Speaker 6: be dealing more with that. Probably more the relationship stuff,
- 28:41Speaker 6: which is what you really want, is a well-fleshed-out relationship thing. So,
- 28:45Speaker 6: I think, from what I've heard, that's where it's going.
- 28:47Speaker 5: But, that's yet to be seen.
- 28:49Speaker 4: Oh, and that reminds me, I don't know how I
- 28:51Speaker 4: forgot this, I guess just because the two kind of
- 28:53Speaker 4: clash in my mind, because I watched them on the
- 28:55Speaker 4: same day.
- 28:55Speaker 9: But, uh, I watched The Crazies.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 28:58Speaker 9: Which was pretty good.
- 28:59Speaker 1: Um.
- 29:00Speaker 4: It was kind of like a... It was weird. It
- 29:03Speaker 4: was like an apocalyptic, almost zombie movie, but not quite. Because,
- 29:07Speaker 4: I mean, the people weren't really zombies.
- 29:11Speaker 9: They were still human. They were just like... Crazy.
- 29:14Speaker 6: Crazy, yeah.
- 29:16Speaker 9: Yeah, which hints the title, The Crazies.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Like an outbreak movie thrown together with a zombie movie.
- 29:22Speaker 9: Yeah, and I really like that mashup. I mean, I
- 29:26Speaker 9: don't know.
- 29:26Speaker 4: I just kind of like the hopelessness of the situation.
- 29:29Speaker 4: They're just like, We're fucked, but let's keep going anyway.
- 29:31Speaker 4: I just thought that was a very uplifting, positive message.
- 29:35Speaker 1: I guess.
- 29:36Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 29:37Speaker 5: If you can take one from it.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 29:39Speaker 9: I mean, not that it. Well, I'm not gonna spoil
- 29:42Speaker 9: that or anything.
- 29:43Speaker 5: One thing that bothered me about The Crazies, the same
- 29:46Speaker 5: thing that bothers me about the show Justified, is that
- 29:50Speaker 5: Timothy Oliphant, I love him. He's a great actor. I
- 29:54Speaker 5: really believe so, especially in that role. But when he
- 29:57Speaker 5: walks like he's a redneck, He walks like he's constipated.
- 30:03Speaker 5: He has trouble walking. He tries to be pigeon-toed or something.
- 30:07Speaker 7: I don't know what.
- 30:07Speaker 5: And they do a lot of walking in the crazies.
- 30:09Speaker 5: And it really drove me nuts by the end of
- 30:12Speaker 5: the movie. So that's my one take on it.
- 30:15Speaker 6: He's really trying hard to be.
- 30:18Speaker 5: It really is. His method acting walking. I appreciate his delivery.
- 30:22Speaker 5: I appreciate... him as an actor, but I really wish
- 30:26Speaker 5: he'd get a walking coach or something. Or an enema.
- 30:32Speaker 5: Maybe he has a problem.
- 30:33Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 30:34Speaker 5: Maybe it's a legitimate medical concern. So, yeah, that's all
- 30:39Speaker 5: I have to say about the craziness. Was that the
- 30:44Speaker 5: end of it?
- 30:45Speaker 4: Oh, well, I just wanted to share this. You can
- 30:47Speaker 4: put this in, file this under Marlena Moment or what.
- 30:51Speaker 4: So I had a dream the other night that I
- 30:53Speaker 4: was hanging out with Luke Wilson. And it was, like,
- 30:56Speaker 4: a really, like, vivid dream. And it was, like, one
- 31:00Speaker 4: of those dreams that you wake up and you're like,
- 31:01Speaker 4: did that really happen? Which, obviously, no, I didn't actually
- 31:05Speaker 4: hang out with Luke Wilson. But it was weird. We were, like,
- 31:07Speaker 4: shopping together. Like, I don't know if he was my
- 31:10Speaker 4: boyfriend or not, which is disturbing.
- 31:12Speaker 12: Because, ew.
- 31:14Speaker 16: Ew.
- 31:14Speaker 9: But in my defense, he had a beard. It covered
- 31:17Speaker 9: up his freakish face.
- 31:18Speaker 7: You do like him with it.
- 31:19Speaker 4: I do love him with the beard.
- 31:20Speaker 9: Only in, like.
- 31:21Speaker 4: He's only been in, like, one movie with.
- 31:22Speaker 9: A beard, so.
- 31:24Speaker 4: But he was cool in that movie, and he wore, like,
- 31:25Speaker 4: sweatbands and, like, tennis outfit, which was hilarious, so.
- 31:29Speaker 9: That's what sold you.
- 31:30Speaker 6: Yep.
- 31:31Speaker 4: Yeah. And I'm surprised I didn't see more people dressed
- 31:35Speaker 4: up like him for Halloween.
- 31:36Speaker 9: Like, I kind of expected that, you know, like.
- 31:39Speaker 5: Because nobody would get it.
- 31:41Speaker 6: Right.
- 31:41Speaker 9: Well, that's what I love. I mean, like, I think
- 31:43Speaker 9: that is brilliant when people.
- 31:45Speaker 4: like I didn't see so many Halloween costumes that were
- 31:49Speaker 4: like inspired from movies I love like obscure things like
- 31:52Speaker 4: I did see one guy which I had not a
- 31:55Speaker 4: huge fan of Jim Carrey and definitely not a fan
- 31:57Speaker 4: of like Ace Ventura but he was dressed up like
- 32:00Speaker 4: I guess like uh there's one point in the Ace
- 32:03Speaker 4: Ventura movies where he's wearing a tutu and my friend
- 32:07Speaker 4: was like oh my god and she was like so
- 32:09Speaker 4: excited and She was like, I'm pretty sure she was
- 32:12Speaker 4: giving that guy her number, and her boyfriend is, like,
- 32:14Speaker 4: standing there like.
- 32:15Speaker 9: What the fuck?
- 32:16Speaker 4: It was very funny.
- 32:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 32:19Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 32:20Speaker 5: That movie's got its moments. It's dumb as fuck. We
- 32:23Speaker 5: all know that, but it's got funny moments.
- 32:25Speaker 4: I've never seen it, so I didn't get it.
- 32:28Speaker 5: Yeah, the second one's terrible.
- 32:29Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 32:30Speaker 9: But no one got my costume, but that's okay.
- 32:32Speaker 5: Do you want to ID your costume?
- 32:34Speaker 4: I was the black Dahlia, so basically I was just, like,
- 32:38Speaker 4: me with curly hair and.
- 32:40Speaker 9: Like, the Dahlia mouth thing.
- 32:43Speaker 4: I didn't go, like, full-on, like, dead and, like, rotting
- 32:46Speaker 4: or anything like that, but just enough.
- 32:48Speaker 5: I did see pictures. It did turn out pretty cool, actually.
- 32:51Speaker 4: Only one person got it, but, you know, I was
- 32:54Speaker 4: in a bar in Indiana, so it's not really full
- 32:57Speaker 4: of the smartest people, so it's okay.
- 32:59Speaker 5: It's a very niche costume. You'd have to really know
- 33:03Speaker 5: the storyline pretty well to get that.
- 33:06Speaker 19: Yeah, okay.
- 33:06Speaker 5: But, you know, A good costume, but yeah, definitely something
- 33:10Speaker 5: that you're going to have to be in the know
- 33:12Speaker 5: to recognize it.
- 33:13Speaker 6: And it puts a little more work into it than
- 33:15Speaker 6: my Dracula t-shirt that I was wearing on Halloween.
- 33:19Speaker 5: That's as far as I went, so I can't talk.
- 33:21Speaker 4: I think that's pretty much it for me.
- 33:26Speaker 5: Moving on, Greg. Okay.
- 33:29Speaker 12: Me.
- 33:30Speaker 5: Probably the most entertaining thing that I watched was the
- 33:38Speaker 5: documentary the wild and wonderful whites of west virginia you
- 33:43Speaker 5: know it's.
- 33:44Speaker 4: So weird like i started watching that a couple weeks
- 33:46Speaker 4: ago and like 10 friends of mine have posted how
- 33:49Speaker 4: they watched that the wild and wonderful whites.
- 33:51Speaker 6: Like i don't know why is it like recently out
- 33:54Speaker 6: or did it just come on netflix or something.
- 33:56Speaker 5: Yeah well yeah it did just come on netflix it
- 33:58Speaker 5: was out um this past year in the uh the
- 34:03Speaker 5: film uh you know convention circuit and things like that
- 34:07Speaker 5: yeah You know, it won a lot of awards and
- 34:10Speaker 5: got a lot of press because of that. Yeah, it's...
- 34:15Speaker 5: If you've not... If you've ever seen the PBS specials
- 34:19Speaker 5: on Jesco White, the dancing outlaw, it's not just him,
- 34:25Speaker 5: but it's his entire family.
- 34:26Speaker 6: Which is even more scary.
- 34:29Speaker 5: Right. The documentarians spent an entire year with the family.
- 34:34Speaker 14: Oh, God.
- 34:34Speaker 10: And.
- 34:36Speaker 5: Every single one of these people is, again, if you
- 34:38Speaker 5: know Jessica White, who is, I think the most popular
- 34:43Speaker 5: video of him is, you know, a woman, if you
- 34:46Speaker 5: don't learn to fry them eggs better, I'm going to
- 34:48Speaker 5: kill you. That guy. He's the most sane and most
- 34:52Speaker 5: rational individual in this family. That's right. And, yeah, these
- 34:58Speaker 5: people are what the people in, you know, West Virginia
- 35:03Speaker 5: coal mining are. uh, consider to be the bad ones,
- 35:07Speaker 5: the outlaws, the troublemakers in Boone County. Once again, that's bad.
- 35:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 35:13Speaker 5: And they are, they are bad. I mean, they are,
- 35:16Speaker 5: you know, every drug you can think of, every crime
- 35:21Speaker 5: you can think of, that's this family. Um, but a
- 35:27Speaker 5: lot of things happen throughout the course of the, of
- 35:29Speaker 5: the film. And, uh, actually comes together very well it's
- 35:36Speaker 5: sad really by the end of it you realize wow
- 35:38Speaker 5: they really are kind of stuck in the way they're
- 35:42Speaker 5: raising and you can see the cycle of children just
- 35:45Speaker 5: continuing in this family and it's it starts out funny
- 35:50Speaker 5: and it kind of ends up sad when you really
- 35:53Speaker 5: get to know these people it's a good story all
- 35:57Speaker 5: documentaries that are well made really tell you something about
- 36:02Speaker 5: yourselves and people and yeah um i i just think
- 36:05Speaker 5: they did a fantastic job it's actually produced by uh
- 36:11Speaker 5: johnny knoxville's company so and i think they started out
- 36:15Speaker 5: thinking hey we'll this is gonna be funny right and
- 36:17Speaker 5: i think it probably turned into something a lot more
- 36:19Speaker 5: serious than they thought so it's it's well done it's
- 36:22Speaker 5: worth it's worth seeing And it has a lot of
- 36:25Speaker 5: Hank 3 in it as well. So you can have
- 36:28Speaker 5: fun with that. I'm not sure if I'm sold on that,
- 36:30Speaker 5: but all right. All right.
- 36:31Speaker 4: Have either of you ever seen Searching for the.
- 36:33Speaker 9: Wrong Eye of Jesus?
- 36:35Speaker 5: No. No, isn't that the one?
- 36:39Speaker 4: No, that was, uh, JD Wilkes from the legendary track
- 36:43Speaker 4: checkers did seven signs because searching for the wrong eye,
- 36:46Speaker 4: Jesus pissed him off so much.
- 36:48Speaker 5: That's right.
- 36:48Speaker 13: Okay.
- 36:48Speaker 5: I knew it was connected to him.
- 36:49Speaker 17: Yeah.
- 36:51Speaker 4: But, uh, no, it was like a, it kind of
- 36:53Speaker 4: reminded me, I mean, I, I, and watch pretty much
- 36:59Speaker 4: every video he's ever been in, but.
- 37:02Speaker 9: I still haven't seen The Wild and.
- 37:03Speaker 4: Wonderful Whites yet, but it's like Searching for the Wrong
- 37:06Speaker 4: Eye Jesus is like this fake southern documentary about like,
- 37:11Speaker 4: just weird southern people I don't know I think about
- 37:14Speaker 4: that whenever someone brings up like Jessica White for some
- 37:17Speaker 4: reason I need to go back and rewatch it because
- 37:19Speaker 4: I remember it being like really amazing visually it was
- 37:22Speaker 4: just kind of weird because it was like it read
- 37:24Speaker 4: like a documentary and that's what it was supposed to
- 37:26Speaker 4: feel like but it was fake which is so.
- 37:28Speaker 6: It's like the hills yeah it was like the hills
- 37:31Speaker 6: the hills for rednecks.
- 37:32Speaker 7: Yeah it was like the hills for rednecks that might
- 37:34Speaker 7: be good.
- 37:37Speaker 5: Oh man that's frightening mhm Let's see. Next, in preparation
- 37:45Speaker 5: for this weekend, because I'm not the biggest horror student,
- 37:52Speaker 5: put it that way, I watched Creepshow. Awesome. I saw it,
- 37:58Speaker 5: you know, that... middle school-aged as a kid, because back
- 38:05Speaker 5: then I was into trying to find all those, because
- 38:08Speaker 5: it's cool to watch that kind of stuff when you're
- 38:10Speaker 5: that age.
- 38:10Speaker 7: Definitely.
- 38:12Speaker 5: Yeah, one thing that I noticed about it is the animation,
- 38:16Speaker 5: especially in the beginning and the cut-betweens between the scenes,
- 38:19Speaker 5: really holds up very well. And that's probably the transitions
- 38:26Speaker 5: from scene to scene and the.
- 38:29Speaker 5: The skeleton, you know, or whatever you want to call him, host,
- 38:34Speaker 5: if you will. Yeah, kind of like, yeah, Crypt Keeper.
- 38:37Speaker 5: The Crypt Keeper of that series. Right. It was really good.
- 38:43Speaker 5: I really enjoyed those parts. The father-son interactions at the beginning,
- 38:50Speaker 5: especially at the beginning, the interaction was... I remember a
- 38:53Speaker 5: lot better than when I first saw it. Now, the...
- 38:59Speaker 5: Each of the vignettes... I'm not ever sold on vignette-style movies.
- 39:05Speaker 5: It's kind of like, well, this is like a TV
- 39:10Speaker 5: show that we just pieced together. Some of them are.
- 39:13Speaker 5: Some of them are. And this is not to say
- 39:15Speaker 5: that there aren't some really good stories in it. I'm
- 39:19Speaker 5: not going to... But like the Stephen King.
- 39:25Speaker 5: I'm sorry. That was the story of him and the meteor...
- 39:29Speaker 5: It's been you.
- 39:30Speaker 7: Since I've seen it, so, yeah, I need to go
- 39:32Speaker 7: back and re-watch it because it's been.
- 39:33Speaker 5: A long time. He's really, really bad. Well, he's just
- 39:36Speaker 5: a bad actor.
- 39:37Speaker 6: I mean, he's always been a bad actor.
- 39:39Speaker 5: The meteorite falls to Earth. And the green fur. Yeah,
- 39:43Speaker 5: all over him.
- 39:44Speaker 12: That was.
- 39:47Speaker 5: That was like a bad episode of the Twilight Zone,
- 39:49Speaker 5: like a really bad episode. And I'm not talking the
- 39:51Speaker 5: original Twilight Zone, I'm talking about the later ones. The
- 39:54Speaker 5: 80s and 90s versions.
- 39:55Speaker 4: See, I watched that within the last year, but then
- 39:58Speaker 4: I watched Tales from the Crypt afterwards, which is just like,
- 40:01Speaker 4: I have them all really confusing my mind, like I
- 40:03Speaker 4: don't watch this much. And that one isn't their, is
- 40:06Speaker 4: it Crypt Show that there's the thing in the box thing?
- 40:10Speaker 5: Under the stairs.
- 40:12Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 40:12Speaker 9: And like eats that guy's wife.
- 40:13Speaker 16: Okay.
- 40:14Speaker 5: Yeah. And that one little vignette takes so long. It's
- 40:19Speaker 5: such a long one. And you're like, okay, we get it.
- 40:21Speaker 1: Move on.
- 40:22Speaker 5: It wasn't that good of a story.
- 40:24Speaker 7: Right.
- 40:24Speaker 6: Right. Right.
- 40:25Speaker 5: I mean, I like the one with the cockroaches. I
- 40:29Speaker 5: thought that one was about one of the creepiest. That
- 40:30Speaker 5: one's classic, yeah. One of the creepiest ones, you know.
- 40:33Speaker 5: And even the one with Ted Danson and Leslie Nielsen
- 40:37Speaker 5: with the at the beach thing. up to your neck
- 40:42Speaker 5: thing that one that one was pretty good that again
- 40:46Speaker 5: i i think you obviously look at it different when
- 40:49Speaker 5: you know when you're older or when times pass and
- 40:51Speaker 5: stuff like that i thought that one was a pretty
- 40:54Speaker 5: well-written story written story but the thing that gets me
- 40:57Speaker 5: now is i can't take leslie nielsen seriously in a
- 41:00Speaker 5: serious role.
- 41:01Speaker 6: Yeah i have not been able to almost his entire career.
- 41:05Speaker 6: Like by the time he, I went back and watched
- 41:08Speaker 6: him in old movies where he was trying to be serious.
- 41:10Speaker 6: I was already so familiar with them from like airplane
- 41:13Speaker 6: and stuff that I was already like, this is weird.
- 41:15Speaker 6: You know, it's like when I watch forbidden planet, I
- 41:18Speaker 6: can't take him seriously. I'm just like, I know you're younger,
- 41:21Speaker 6: but you're still Leslie Nielsen and you still don't read
- 41:24Speaker 6: serious to me ever.
- 41:26Speaker 5: And he's supposed to be evil in this one. You know,
- 41:29Speaker 5: just a horrible person. And, and, he plays it almost
- 41:35Speaker 5: over the top the same way he does his straight
- 41:37Speaker 5: man funny guy yeah and it just you can't um
- 41:42Speaker 5: you can't it it's not as creepy as it should
- 41:45Speaker 5: be because of who he is so and then ted
- 41:48Speaker 5: dancing i could care less if he dies so that's.
- 41:51Speaker 6: That's not creepy poor ted nobody cares about ted dancing
- 41:56Speaker 6: anymore i'm sorry ted.
- 41:58Speaker 5: But i you know I can't.
- 42:00Speaker 4: And here's the problem, like, since I watched Creepshow and
- 42:03Speaker 4: the Tales from the Crypt so close together, is that
- 42:05Speaker 4: the one that had Demi Moore and Jeffrey Tambor?
- 42:07Speaker 5: Nope. That's in Tales from the Crypt, yeah.
- 42:10Speaker 9: See, I am confused.
- 42:12Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 42:13Speaker 6: If you have a problem with those little, like, broken
- 42:15Speaker 6: up story ones, I would say you probably haven't seen
- 42:19Speaker 6: Trick or Treat that just came out this past year.
- 42:21Speaker 5: No, I haven't.
- 42:22Speaker 6: I would say watch that one, because that one, it,
- 42:25Speaker 6: it one ups it, it finds a way to take
- 42:28Speaker 6: all these separate little stories.
- 42:29Speaker 7: And make them kind of intertwined in a way that's
- 42:32Speaker 7: really impressive.
- 42:33Speaker 6: By the time you're done, you're like, wow, the, the
- 42:36Speaker 6: screenwriting on this is way more impressive than just broken
- 42:39Speaker 6: up little stories.
- 42:40Speaker 5: Good.
- 42:41Speaker 6: I give them credit for structure cause it's, it's impressive.
- 42:43Speaker 7: Good.
- 42:45Speaker 5: And, uh, this was actually sport sparked more by my wife. Um, but,
- 42:51Speaker 5: You know, I saw that the Scarefest had some of
- 42:54Speaker 5: the people from the, you know, the paranormal side of it.
- 42:57Speaker 5: So she's like, well, why don't you, you know, why
- 42:59Speaker 5: don't we watch that paranormal state part of that? Just
- 43:04Speaker 5: to see what it was like. So we watched like
- 43:06Speaker 5: eight episodes of that, which there are only 20 minutes
- 43:08Speaker 5: a piece to watch.
- 43:09Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 43:10Speaker 5: Um, because I normally don't get into that whole... I
- 43:13Speaker 5: don't either. That whole, uh, ghost hunting thing.
- 43:16Speaker 7: I avoid their tables at these shows.
- 43:18Speaker 6: Right.
- 43:19Speaker 5: Most shows don't have it like this.
- 43:21Speaker 6: This one is broken up into horror, you know, horror actors.
- 43:24Speaker 16: Right.
- 43:24Speaker 5: And, like, actual real paranormal people who.
- 43:27Speaker 6: believe everything they're selling, and I'm not sure I believe
- 43:30Speaker 6: 100% of what they're selling, so I stay away from
- 43:33Speaker 6: those tables, because they want to sell you pictures of
- 43:35Speaker 6: your aura and shit like that.
- 43:37Speaker 5: Well, yeah. I want a picture of my aura.
- 43:39Speaker 6: Well, you can get it at several places at this one.
- 43:41Speaker 6: I already saw it the other day.
- 43:42Speaker 5: It's there. So, I think the thing that bothers me
- 43:48Speaker 5: about those shows is they're created for television, so.
- 43:55Speaker 5: And they've spent a lot of money getting them to
- 43:57Speaker 5: the place and interviewing people and setting everything up so
- 43:59Speaker 5: that if it's not there, they're going to have to
- 44:01Speaker 5: find some way to create it. And, you know, so
- 44:09Speaker 5: it feels more like the real world or the hills
- 44:11Speaker 5: than it does an actual investigation. Because a true paranormal
- 44:14Speaker 5: investigation should be really fucking boring for most of the show.
- 44:18Speaker 6: Well, and that's the other thing is they also, you're
- 44:21Speaker 6: with the same people every episode, so they have to
- 44:23Speaker 6: become characters.
- 44:25Speaker 13: Yes.
- 44:25Speaker 6: And you have to, especially on the worst ones, is
- 44:27Speaker 6: when they have to vamp it up, and they're like,
- 44:29Speaker 6: the one that Misty hates, they're just like, come on, ghost!
- 44:32Speaker 6: And he's like challenging them, and he wants to be
- 44:34Speaker 6: a ridiculous over-the-top character.
- 44:36Speaker 13: Yes.
- 44:37Speaker 7: Like, really, if you were following around normal, everyday.
- 44:39Speaker 5: Investigators, you would go to sleep immediately.
- 44:42Speaker 6: Right.
- 44:42Speaker 5: And not just Marlene and I do.
- 44:44Speaker 7: You would actually go to sleep because.
- 44:45Speaker 6: It would be the most boring bullshit of, you know,
- 44:49Speaker 6: day-to-day activities and paperwork and, you know, I mean, hooking
- 44:53Speaker 6: up machines.
- 44:54Speaker 7: And, I mean, it would be the most boring shit ever.
- 44:56Speaker 5: So they can't actually show you what it was really like.
- 44:59Speaker 5: I will say that about this one is they are
- 45:02Speaker 5: at least respectful to the dead or whatever's going on.
- 45:05Speaker 5: And they don't. you know, challenge like some of the
- 45:07Speaker 5: other ones. Like, come on, do the, you know. I'll
- 45:09Speaker 5: kick your ass, ghost. Any of those tools, any of
- 45:13Speaker 5: those tools, they need to get a life. And you
- 45:17Speaker 5: may see some of them today.
- 45:18Speaker 9: Oh, I know.
- 45:19Speaker 5: And I'll probably laugh at them. And then I did
- 45:23Speaker 5: see that Chip Coffey, one of the mediums, was going
- 45:25Speaker 5: to be here. And he's on that show. But I
- 45:29Speaker 5: saw that he was there Friday and Saturday only. So
- 45:31Speaker 5: I telepathically sent a message to him to say, no,
- 45:33Speaker 5: you need to stay in town. So we'll see if
- 45:36Speaker 5: he really is. If he got your message. If he
- 45:38Speaker 5: really got my message. Yeah, I take things with a
- 45:44Speaker 5: grain of salt. Not that I don't believe. I just
- 45:47Speaker 5: think putting it on television is the wrong place because
- 45:51Speaker 5: it's just not.
- 45:52Speaker 7: Well, and especially in that format where you have to.
- 45:56Speaker 4: Right.
- 45:56Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:18Speaker 7: You're going to have to be like, what was that noise?
- 46:20Speaker 7: Did you hear that?
- 46:21Speaker 6: You know, I mean, you've got to do that the
- 46:22Speaker 6: whole episode because otherwise nothing happens, more than likely.
- 46:26Speaker 1: Right.
- 46:26Speaker 4: You know what TV show I really do like along
- 46:29Speaker 4: that same line?
- 46:30Speaker 9: A haunting.
- 46:31Speaker 4: Like, I DVR all those episodes.
- 46:32Speaker 5: I've seen every one.
- 46:34Speaker 7: I just don't watch many of them.
- 46:36Speaker 6: And, again, I just don't watch much TV, so I
- 46:38Speaker 6: think I've missed which ones are the good ones and
- 46:40Speaker 6: which ones.
- 46:40Speaker 7: Because there are some decent ones.
- 46:42Speaker 6: I've seen clips from stuff that actually looks like it's interesting,
- 46:45Speaker 6: and I've seen clips from stuff that's just crap. So
- 46:47Speaker 6: I think I haven't paid enough attention to break them
- 46:49Speaker 6: up at this point into the better stuff.
- 46:51Speaker 4: Well, a haunting isn't like paranormal investigation. It's like a
- 46:54Speaker 4: story that someone has brought to them about a haunting
- 46:56Speaker 4: that they experienced.
- 46:57Speaker 5: That's way more interesting. Yeah, I can get behind that.
- 46:59Speaker 7: Because just general ghost stories are kind of cool.
- 47:01Speaker 6: It's when they try to make it a documentary version
- 47:04Speaker 6: that you lose a lot, usually.
- 47:06Speaker 5: I still think Robert Stack should do every spooky TV show.
- 47:11Speaker 5: Because that man could read me green eggs and ham
- 47:13Speaker 5: and I'd be scared.
- 47:14Speaker 4: I actually have a ghost stories compiled thing of Unsolved
- 47:19Speaker 4: Mysteries in the trunk of my car here.
- 47:21Speaker 9: Too bad we don't have.
- 47:22Speaker 4: A DVD player in the television because we would so be.
- 47:25Speaker 9: Watching that right now.
- 47:27Speaker 6: I think it's going to be harder for him to
- 47:28Speaker 6: continue doing the voiceover work now. But I mean, really,
- 47:32Speaker 6: if he was hooked up with all these paranormal people,
- 47:36Speaker 6: he should still be able.
- 47:36Speaker 5: To deliver new episodes to me.
- 47:39Speaker 4: I used to watch that with my grandma every night,
- 47:42Speaker 4: and I lived next door, and I would be so
- 47:43Speaker 4: scared after I watched it.
- 47:45Speaker 9: She'd have to walk.
- 47:46Speaker 6: Me to my door.
- 47:48Speaker 9: It was so funny.
- 47:52Speaker 4: Several times I've had paranormal investigators in the top apartment
- 47:56Speaker 4: of my house. It's just, like, they sit in the
- 47:59Speaker 4: dark for hours, and then you see, like, a red
- 48:01Speaker 4: light flash or, like, a light flash, and then you
- 48:04Speaker 4: hear this, like, buzzing sound or something, like, from some
- 48:06Speaker 4: of their equipment. It's so ridiculous. I'm just like, wow,
- 48:09Speaker 4: you guys really need to get to life. Like, I
- 48:11Speaker 4: live here, and.
- 48:12Speaker 7: Like, nothing ever happens. Nothing happens.
- 48:15Speaker 9: It's an old building.
- 48:16Speaker 4: Of course it's... Well, I mean, like, weird stuff has
- 48:20Speaker 4: definitely happened, but in the course of me living there
- 48:22Speaker 4: for several years, like, a handful of.
- 48:26Speaker 9: Weird things have happened.
- 48:27Speaker 4: Like, it's not going to happen in a night because you, like.
- 48:29Speaker 6: And probably the same kind of stuff that happens to
- 48:31Speaker 6: somebody in a house that was, you know, built 20
- 48:33Speaker 6: years ago. Yeah.
- 48:34Speaker 5: You know, it's like.
- 48:35Speaker 6: shit just happens you know it's it's life and you
- 48:37Speaker 6: turn around and be like how did that get there
- 48:39Speaker 6: oh well and you go on with your damn day.
- 48:41Speaker 4: No definitely much weirder things like that have happened like
- 48:44Speaker 4: once i was talking to my neighbor in the downstairs
- 48:46Speaker 4: hallway and the light above us just started violently shaking
- 48:50Speaker 4: like there was someone physically shaking it like that was
- 48:54Speaker 4: pretty that was the weirdest thing.
- 48:55Speaker 5: That's ever happened.
- 48:58Speaker 6: Oh man so was that it for your week as
- 49:00Speaker 6: well Yeah, we're here. We're actually coming into the city
- 49:05Speaker 6: here in Lexington where they're having Scarefest. So, I guess
- 49:09Speaker 6: we will take a break here and be back inside
- 49:12Speaker 6: the event to continue on with our coverage of Scarefest.
- 49:19Speaker 13: Are you.
- 49:20Speaker 16: scared to walk through the hallways? Are you worried that
- 49:27Speaker 16: the spiders run away? Are you petrified of being petrified?
- 49:38Speaker 16: Are we going to have to save the school again?
- 49:44Speaker 5: We've got to.
- 49:45Speaker 8: Save Ginny Weasley from the basilisk. We've got to save
- 49:52Speaker 8: the school from that unseen horror. We've got to save
- 49:59Speaker 8: Ginny Weasley from the basilisk. We've got to save the
- 50:05Speaker 8: school again.
- 50:10Speaker 5: Taking out all the.
- 50:13Speaker 10: Kids It even took out Miss Norris Paid up the
- 50:23Speaker 10: film in Collins Camera And petrified.
- 50:29Speaker 16: Our friend Hermione Granger We got to save Ginny Weasley
- 50:37Speaker 16: from the basilisk.
- 50:39Speaker 10: Got to save the school from that unseen horror.
- 50:44Speaker 15: We've got to save the school.
- 50:49Speaker 5: Submit it, folks.
- 50:50Speaker 13: Yes, that's all it takes to our refreshment counter in
- 50:52Speaker 13: the lobby.
- 50:54Speaker 1: There you'll find popcorn and an assortment of popular candy
- 50:57Speaker 1: bars to please every taste. Try one of these delicious
- 51:01Speaker 1: candy bars.

- 51:19Speaker 1: Get one at our confection counter in the lobby now.
- 51:37Speaker 21: Ladies and gentlemen, George Kosana, the sheriff from Night of
- 51:41Speaker 21: the Living Dead.
- 51:45Speaker 7: All right, we're here with George.
- 51:47Speaker 6: Just wanted to see just kind of basics. Were you
- 51:50Speaker 6: originally involved in acting before you got into George Romero projects?
- 51:55Speaker 17: In around 1960, George Romero and Russell Striner formed a
- 52:01Speaker 17: corporation called the Latent Image Studios. We all worked there
- 52:06Speaker 17: in a variety of capacities. It was a commercial production house.
- 52:10Speaker 17: We did films, travelogues, documentaries, historical films, industrial films, promotional films,
- 52:20Speaker 17: political campaigns, television commercials for products like beer and Calgon,
- 52:26Speaker 17: things like that. And every once in a while we'd
- 52:31Speaker 17: even get paid. And over the years, we finally saved
- 52:34Speaker 17: enough money to buy a 35mm camera. So we said, well,
- 52:41Speaker 17: we have the people, we know what to do, we
- 52:43Speaker 17: know how to do it, we have the equipment to
- 52:45Speaker 17: do it with, let's make a movie. So we formed
- 52:49Speaker 17: Image 10 Productions, Inc., and made Night of the Living Dead.
- 52:54Speaker 17: I was the production manager, I crewed on it, and
- 52:57Speaker 17: I played the sheriff in it.
- 53:00Speaker 6: What did you think when you first saw the story?
- 53:02Speaker 6: It was kind of different from most movies at that point.
- 53:06Speaker 17: I was more interested in what I had to do
- 53:08Speaker 17: than analyzing the written word on the page.
- 53:13Speaker 6: Any stories from the set during shooting of stuff that
- 53:16Speaker 6: you guys had to do?
- 53:17Speaker 17: There's a number of them. I don't have time to
- 53:21Speaker 17: tell them all. But we did things that were.
- 53:28Speaker 17: Ridiculously lucky in a way. As an example, I found
- 53:34Speaker 17: a beat-up Chevy truck that was junked in a small
- 53:38Speaker 17: town called Elizabeth, Pennsylvania.
- 53:42Speaker 5: I bought it for $ 50.
- 53:45Speaker 17: And Gary Striner, Russ's younger brother, who was also our
- 53:50Speaker 17: sound engineer, told that I'd Steered the beat-up truck. We
- 53:56Speaker 17: towed it to the house in Evans City. And when
- 54:00Speaker 17: we were unhooking it, another truck came down the road
- 54:04Speaker 17: that was the exact same truck in perfect condition in use.
- 54:07Speaker 17: So we stopped him. Said, we want to rent your truck.
- 54:10Speaker 17: He thought we were nuts. When we told him what
- 54:13Speaker 17: we were doing and how much we would pay him,
- 54:16Speaker 17: he agreed. So we used his truck for every scene
- 54:20Speaker 17: where the truck had to move. And we use the
- 54:22Speaker 17: beat-up truck to blow it up.
- 54:24Speaker 5: Wow.
- 54:26Speaker 6: And have you just been kind of amazed at the
- 54:28Speaker 6: way it's, the longevity that it's had over the years?
- 54:31Speaker 17: I am well pleased with that. I hope it continues,
- 54:34Speaker 17: and I hope we reap some rewards and benefits from it.
- 54:37Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 54:38Speaker 17: As of late, that has not been the case.
- 54:41Speaker 6: Yeah, I guess licensing issues and all that.
- 54:43Speaker 17: Well, to begin with, the distributor, the Walter Reed Organization
- 54:48Speaker 17: of Continental Films, Misappropriated the funds.
- 54:52Speaker 12: Yeah. All right.
- 54:54Speaker 17: That's putting it politely. And we've spent years in court.
- 55:01Speaker 17: We've proven it in court. But not what's left now
- 55:06Speaker 17: is like having a piece of a used soup bone
- 55:09Speaker 17: after you've made soup.
- 55:10Speaker 8: Nice.
- 55:11Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 55:12Speaker 7: Thank you, sir.
- 55:22Speaker 22: Are you looking for a way to connect with people
- 55:23Speaker 22: who like the things that you like? Whether it's music, movies, TV,
- 55:27Speaker 22: or whatever you're into, head on over to the palover.com forums. Yes,
- 55:32Speaker 22: but forums and message boards are elitist and archaic. Well, yeah,
- 55:39Speaker 22: maybe if you're an asshole. Palover.com is home to all
- 55:42Speaker 22: your favorite podcasts. So why not head over there now?
- 55:46Speaker 22: Start talking about all the things you want to talk about.
- 55:48Speaker 22: That's palaver.com. P-A-L-A-V-E-R dot com.
- 56:05Speaker 21: And now we talk to actor John Amplis, best known
- 56:08Speaker 21: for his lead role in Martin, and has worked with
- 56:10Speaker 21: George Romero on several of his other films over the years.
- 56:16Speaker 7: We're here with John Amplis. How early did you get
- 56:18Speaker 7: into acting?
- 56:19Speaker 3: I got into acting when I was 10 years old.
- 56:22Speaker 23: My uncle was involved in community theater and I got
- 56:26Speaker 23: a role in a play.
- 56:28Speaker 14: A tent.
- 56:29Speaker 5: So, it's been that long.
- 56:31Speaker 23: From there you moved into school plays. As a teenager
- 56:36Speaker 23: I went to the Playhouse School in Pittsburgh and then
- 56:41Speaker 23: I was in the Army for a while for three
- 56:43Speaker 23: years and then I went to college for theater at
- 56:46Speaker 23: Point Park, and in fact, my senior year of college
- 56:51Speaker 23: is where George saw me do a play and then
- 56:55Speaker 23: cast me as Martin.
- 56:56Speaker 6: That's what I was going to ask, how you got involved.
- 56:59Speaker 6: So he just saw you on the stage?
- 57:00Speaker 23: He saw me on the stage, went away, and I
- 57:04Speaker 23: think he had an older character in mind initially and
- 57:07Speaker 23: rewrote it and called me two months later and offered
- 57:11Speaker 23: me the role.
- 57:12Speaker 12: Interesting.
- 57:13Speaker 23: And since then, I've done, you know, from Martin through
- 57:19Speaker 23: Dark Half, I've done six films with George.
- 57:23Speaker 7: Dawn of the Dead, you wore, like, a lot of
- 57:24Speaker 7: different hats, it seemed like.
- 57:25Speaker 23: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I did. I helped casting, and I
- 57:29Speaker 23: certainly helped cast a lot of zombies that came in,
- 57:32Speaker 23: which was not very difficult because a lot of fans
- 57:36Speaker 23: and a lot of friends wanted to be involved.
- 57:39Speaker 5: And so, you know, we set them up in.
- 57:41Speaker 23: lined them up in chairs, gray makeup, slapped them on,
- 57:44Speaker 23: gave them a costume, and away they went. Some of
- 57:46Speaker 23: them became rather kind of, got themselves into the forefront.
- 57:54Speaker 5: You know.
- 57:54Speaker 7: Became the favorites.
- 57:56Speaker 23: Yes, became the favorites, and then, you know, they sometimes
- 58:00Speaker 23: are out on the circuit, you know.
- 58:03Speaker 1: How about Midnight?
- 58:04Speaker 7: Midnight.
- 58:05Speaker 23: Midnight was with John Russo. I was already back in
- 58:10Speaker 23: Pittsburgh doing.
- 58:13Speaker 23: I was doing a gala, actually, Playhouse's 50th anniversary in
- 58:17Speaker 23: a play called A Life in the Theater. And shooting
- 58:21Speaker 23: for Midnight just started. Midnight was very nice to work with.
- 58:27Speaker 6: And.
- 58:32Speaker 23: Again, though, I've only seen it maybe one time. I
- 58:35Speaker 23: ran into Jack recently, and he gave me some posters.
- 58:38Speaker 23: So I have to go back and look at Midnight again.
- 58:40Speaker 5: That's kind of what we wanted to do.
- 58:42Speaker 23: I know a lot of folks that have mentioned it
- 58:45Speaker 23: to me, and they really like it. They seem to
- 58:47Speaker 23: like it.
- 58:49Speaker 6: And you've actually had both of them direct you. You've
- 58:53Speaker 6: had George and John. So what's the difference, I guess,
- 58:55Speaker 6: as directing styles?
- 58:58Speaker 8: Um.
- 59:00Speaker 7: He's right next to us.
- 59:01Speaker 23: I'm not sure I can make a comment on that.
- 59:05Speaker 7: Just if they do things differently?
- 59:07Speaker 23: Well, of course they do. Of course they do. I mean,
- 59:10Speaker 23: but George is the man. So I'll leave it at that.
- 59:14Speaker 7: You can't argue that one. And then as far as,
- 59:19Speaker 7: are you still teaching and directing?
- 59:21Speaker 1: I do.
- 59:21Speaker 23: I teach and direct, and I'm the Associate Artistic Director
- 59:26Speaker 23: of the Playhouse Repertory Company, our professional company. And I'm
- 59:29Speaker 23: currently auditioning for a conservatory play with our students called
- 59:34Speaker 23: The Time of Your Life. And so that's what I'll
- 59:36Speaker 23: be doing Tuesday night through the weekend when I get back.
- 59:42Speaker 23: Go into rehearsals in about a week and a half.
- 59:46Speaker 6: Is there anything in the future you wanted to promote
- 59:48Speaker 6: or anything, any upcoming stuff?
- 59:50Speaker 23: Well, everything I do at the Playhouse is always up
- 59:54Speaker 23: for promotion. So the Time of Your Life will open
- 1:00:00Speaker 23: in January in Pittsburgh at the Playhouse, and that's.
- 1:00:04Speaker 5: Probably the best thing.
- 1:00:05Speaker 23: I'm going to be in Calgary at.
- 1:00:07Speaker 7: A convention in June.
- 1:00:11Speaker 23: I'm not sure of the exact dates, but that's my next...
- 1:00:15Speaker 23: convention circuit part.
- 1:00:18Speaker 7: Does the Playhouse have a website?
- 1:00:20Speaker 23: Yeah, Playhouse has a website. They're working on a website.
- 1:00:23Speaker 23: Friends of mine are working on a website personally for me.
- 1:00:26Speaker 23: It's not up, but there are some things on it.
- 1:00:30Speaker 23: It's www.johnampliss.com.
- 1:00:34Speaker 5: Thank you for talking with us today. It's my pleasure.
- 1:00:42Speaker 7: They called him Machete.
- 1:00:48Speaker 10: This is Danny Trejo, a.k.a.
- 1:00:52Speaker 21: Machete.
- 1:00:54Speaker 3: And you're checking.
- 1:00:55Speaker 4: Out Movie Meltdown. You better keep checking it out or.
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: I'll come looking for you.
- 1:01:00Speaker 3: And I got machetes.
- 1:01:05Speaker 1: I soon realized.
- 1:01:08Speaker 13: They just fucked with the wrong Mexican.
- 1:01:15Speaker 17: Machete.
- 1:01:16Speaker 24: This place is noisy, but they don't mind it To
- 1:01:22Speaker 24: see them now, well, I'm reminded Of a time I
- 1:01:29Speaker 24: showed my feelings Far below this same glass ceiling On
- 1:01:38Speaker 24: a clear.
- 1:01:39Speaker 18: Night, childish bliss Hot to be in love like this
- 1:01:48Speaker 18: Once upon a time I was.
- 1:01:55Speaker 24: Under the food court moon In love Alright.
- 1:02:03Speaker 7: So we're at the break point here.
- 1:02:05Speaker 6: We're off at the food court of the center here
- 1:02:08Speaker 6: having a leisurely lunch of Subway sandwiches and french toast
- 1:02:12Speaker 6: sticks and bad jalapeno poppers yeah yeah from what i've
- 1:02:19Speaker 6: heard i didn't I steered clear of it I don't
- 1:02:22Speaker 6: know I had.
- 1:02:22Speaker 4: An accidental smorgasbord but it was only because everything I
- 1:02:25Speaker 4: got was so damn disgusting and I had to go
- 1:02:27Speaker 4: buy something else I spent like 80 bucks at this
- 1:02:30Speaker 4: fucking food court and didn't eat any of it.
- 1:02:33Speaker 7: Because it was gross you got scammed I did.
- 1:02:35Speaker 4: I'm sitting here with two drinks in front of me
- 1:02:38Speaker 4: and like three different wrappers from three.
- 1:02:41Speaker 5: Different restaurants there's only one store she didn't go to
- 1:02:43Speaker 5: get food at yeah Mr. Khan's Mr. Khan's Chinese food
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: I think you need to make room for an egg.
- 1:02:49Speaker 7: Roll I think so At least Fortune Cookie will wrap
- 1:02:52Speaker 7: all this up now.
- 1:02:54Speaker 5: It is fried vegetables.
- 1:02:56Speaker 7: There you go. That makes it totally different.
- 1:02:58Speaker 9: I do like fried vegetables.
- 1:02:59Speaker 15: I should have just gone there.
- 1:03:03Speaker 6: So, what is our take on the show so far?
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: It's pretty spaced out. It's your standard thrown-together horror convention,
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: which I've seen many, many of.
- 1:03:17Speaker 6: Yeah, I like it just because it's not overwhelming at
- 1:03:20Speaker 6: this point. It is sort of a break to not
- 1:03:22Speaker 6: have one.
- 1:03:22Speaker 4: That's... Not horror hell, that's for sure.
- 1:03:24Speaker 6: It's not, like, continually swarmed by people, which I'm assuming
- 1:03:29Speaker 6: they probably don't like that, but to me it's sort
- 1:03:31Speaker 6: of nice to not have to deal with that, but.
- 1:03:35Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: Like, we were talking about Harry Christian's zombie earlier and
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: how we see him more than we see most members
- 1:03:41Speaker 4: of our family. And I'm starting to feel like that
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: about half the people here. I'm like, why don't we
- 1:03:46Speaker 4: just be friends because we see you all the fucking time?
- 1:03:49Speaker 6: Well, at least there are a few that wave to
- 1:03:51Speaker 6: me now. I kind of like that. Joel said hi
- 1:03:54Speaker 6: when I went by.
- 1:03:55Speaker 7: I was like, hey, he knows me only from the show.
- 1:03:58Speaker 5: That's kind of awesome.
- 1:03:59Speaker 6: Once again, we have show family now. That's actually kind
- 1:04:02Speaker 6: of cool.
- 1:04:03Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:04:05Speaker 9: There's a lot of paranormal investigators here.
- 1:04:07Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:04:08Speaker 12: A lot.
- 1:04:09Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 1:04:09Speaker 5: I don't think it takes much to be one, so
- 1:04:12Speaker 5: I think.
- 1:04:13Speaker 2: Well, you were going to get a vest. Yeah, they
- 1:04:15Speaker 2: do have the official ghost hunting vests. I guess if
- 1:04:18Speaker 2: you're going to be a ghost hunter, you have to
- 1:04:19Speaker 2: have a vest.
- 1:04:20Speaker 6: If you have one of these khaki vests with pockets,
- 1:04:23Speaker 6: it makes you a ghost hunter.
- 1:04:24Speaker 7: Really, that's the only criteria.
- 1:04:26Speaker 5: If your dad has a fly fishing vest.
- 1:04:28Speaker 4: I was going to say, or.
- 1:04:29Speaker 9: A crocodile hunter. Ghost hunter or crocodile hunter.
- 1:04:32Speaker 7: Same difference, really. They're both scary, right? I mean, same difference.
- 1:04:37Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 1:04:39Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: I want to see an episode of Ghost Hunters where
- 1:04:43Speaker 4: they're trying to find the ghost of Steve.
- 1:04:46Speaker 5: Steve Herman.
- 1:04:47Speaker 7: That would be awesome. And he only comes to.
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: Haunt them because he's pissed that they're jacking his style.
- 1:04:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:04:52Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:04:53Speaker 7: A lot of ghostly crikey.
- 1:04:58Speaker 4: And then someone's holding a turtle over your head as
- 1:05:01Speaker 4: it's shitting on you. That's all I remember from that show.
- 1:05:06Speaker 4: Him holding things over his wife's head and letting it
- 1:05:08Speaker 4: shit on him.
- 1:05:08Speaker 7: Yeah, that and him occasionally getting bit by whatever it was.
- 1:05:11Speaker 7: It usually wasn't a crocodile. It was always a snake.
- 1:05:14Speaker 5: The snake that spit venom in his face.
- 1:05:16Speaker 6: Yeah, it always went horribly wrong. And then eventually it
- 1:05:21Speaker 6: really went horribly wrong.
- 1:05:23Speaker 7: Poor Steve.
- 1:05:23Speaker 4: I mean, everyone's like, when he died, everyone's like, really?
- 1:05:26Speaker 9: It took this long?
- 1:05:27Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, how many seasons was that show around?
- 1:05:29Speaker 6: I mean, who would have guessed it would have made
- 1:05:31Speaker 6: it past the first one?
- 1:05:32Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:05:32Speaker 5: Well, and that it wasn't something that.
- 1:05:35Speaker 7: Yeah, it wasn't a crocodile.
- 1:05:36Speaker 5: A crocodile.
- 1:05:37Speaker 7: It wasn't a poisonous snake. It was kind of a
- 1:05:40Speaker 7: lame animal.
- 1:05:41Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:05:42Speaker 7: Now I'm going to piss off the sea urchin.
- 1:05:46Speaker 6: Was it.
- 1:05:47Speaker 4: Angry letters from stingrays.
- 1:05:49Speaker 7: Stingrays across the world. Was it a jellyfish?
- 1:05:52Speaker 9: It was a stingray.
- 1:05:52Speaker 5: I think it was a stingray.
- 1:05:53Speaker 6: It was a stingray, and yeah, now we're going to
- 1:05:55Speaker 6: get angry letters from a stingray.
- 1:05:57Speaker 5: No, it wasn't a stingray. It was a manta ray.
- 1:06:00Speaker 5: It was somebody calling us out for.
- 1:06:02Speaker 6: Total nerd style stingray.
- 1:06:06Speaker 7: Actually, it was a.
- 1:06:10Speaker 7: I do have a Steve Irwin action figure. We all should, really.
- 1:06:14Speaker 7: I do miss the guy. He was pretty damn awesome.
- 1:06:16Speaker 7: He was always entertaining.
- 1:06:18Speaker 6: He was kind of educational, but really that was overwhelmed
- 1:06:21Speaker 6: by the, oh my God, he's going to get killed
- 1:06:23Speaker 6: aspect of the show.
- 1:06:24Speaker 5: His wife was always awkward.
- 1:06:27Speaker 7: Well, I mean, wouldn't you be if you had to
- 1:06:28Speaker 7: put up with.
- 1:06:28Speaker 13: Him all day?
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: That's funny because I watched Strange Wilderness last night, and
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: I barely watched it because I was doing other things,
- 1:06:35Speaker 4: but it was on TV. There's a lot of bleeping,
- 1:06:39Speaker 4: but just the only part that I really caught was
- 1:06:41Speaker 4: the part that they're doing. They're trying to narrate these
- 1:06:43Speaker 4: animal shows, and they just make up facts. He's like, bears,
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: they were named after a baseball team in Chicago. He's like,
- 1:06:54Speaker 4: it's the other way around.
- 1:06:58Speaker 5: That works.
- 1:06:59Speaker 6: I don't know if that's funny or not, but we'll see.
- 1:07:03Speaker 7: It's questionable.
- 1:07:04Speaker 5: I won't see the movie based on that.
- 1:07:05Speaker 7: Yeah, like most of these comedies, it's questionable whether they're
- 1:07:08Speaker 7: funny or not. Right.
- 1:07:13Speaker 12: Oh.
- 1:07:13Speaker 5: So about the convention itself.
- 1:07:15Speaker 4: I really like the concrete floors.
- 1:07:18Speaker 7: This isn't part of the convention. This is the food court.
- 1:07:20Speaker 15: I really like the food court.
- 1:07:22Speaker 7: And concrete floors. Concrete floors are awesome.
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: We came all the way to Lexington for A &
- 1:07:26Speaker 5: W and concrete floors.
- 1:07:28Speaker 4: I've gone places for less.
- 1:07:30Speaker 24: Okay.
- 1:07:30Speaker 7: There you go.
- 1:07:32Speaker 6: Keep that in mind, ladies and gentlemen. At any given moment,
- 1:07:36Speaker 6: Marlena could show up at your door. And she's not
- 1:07:38Speaker 6: expecting much. So are you excited about anything else? Are
- 1:07:41Speaker 6: you ready to get back in there and do something?
- 1:07:45Speaker 16: Um.
- 1:07:49Speaker 5: I don't know what it would be. I don't need
- 1:07:51Speaker 5: my aura red.
- 1:07:52Speaker 18: No.
- 1:07:52Speaker 5: That's right over here.
- 1:07:54Speaker 7: You want your palm red?
- 1:07:55Speaker 4: Yeah, I spent like 80 bucks on the food court, though,
- 1:07:58Speaker 4: which I haven't even paid my rent.
- 1:08:00Speaker 9: It's like, what, this is excellent.
- 1:08:02Speaker 6: Or better yet, when I misheard you and I thought
- 1:08:05Speaker 6: you wanted to get your pong read.
- 1:08:06Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:08:07Speaker 7: Which then, we came up with two options.
- 1:08:10Speaker 6: Number one, I thought we should go with the Telstar
- 1:08:13Speaker 6: video pong, and the person would watch you play pong
- 1:08:16Speaker 6: for like five minutes, and then based on that would
- 1:08:18Speaker 6: tell you about your life. Or then Greg was going
- 1:08:20Speaker 6: with the ping pong option, which is you would actually
- 1:08:23Speaker 6: have to play a game of ping pong, and then
- 1:08:24Speaker 6: they would read the ball after you were done.
- 1:08:27Speaker 7: We're not really sure which one they go with. We
- 1:08:30Speaker 7: could go ask them, but I think they'll just tell
- 1:08:32Speaker 7: me to get the fuck out.
- 1:08:33Speaker 2: I think if you read the ball, then you could
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: like sell them the ball to have something tangible with
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: them to take.
- 1:08:39Speaker 7: Five bucks, you get to take this ping pong ball.
- 1:08:41Speaker 7: Sell a one dollar ping pong ball for five bucks.
- 1:08:44Speaker 7: It's quite a sales pitch.
- 1:08:45Speaker 5: I think we've got something here. Oh, man.
- 1:08:49Speaker 6: So we should head back in there and go get
- 1:08:51Speaker 6: our ping pong balls?
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: Or.
- 1:08:53Speaker 7: I just want to play Telstar Pong. That's all I
- 1:08:54Speaker 7: want to play.
- 1:08:55Speaker 5: Yeah, why don't they... Yeah.
- 1:08:56Speaker 7: Ding, ding, ding, ding.
- 1:08:58Speaker 5: I'm going to get that for my Wii. Yeah, they
- 1:09:01Speaker 5: should have that. They should have that for Wii.
- 1:09:03Speaker 7: They probably do. I don't pay attention to Wii. I'm
- 1:09:05Speaker 7: sure they do. All right. I guess we should get
- 1:09:09Speaker 7: back in there and go annoy more people.
- 1:09:12Speaker 4: Yep.
- 1:09:21Speaker 15: More than one time a day.
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: See the marmoset about to see.
- 1:09:27Speaker 18: Come along with me. Let the good times play.
- 1:09:33Speaker 15: And I say to my witchy. Ooh, witchy so true. Ooh, witchy.
- 1:09:42Speaker 15: Let me know that I'm the one for you.
- 1:09:46Speaker 5: Oh, hi, everybody.
- 1:09:47Speaker 15: It's me, Tommy Wiseau from The Room.
- 1:09:49Speaker 25: And me, Nicholas Cage from Ghost Rider. And we're here
- 1:09:52Speaker 25: to talk to you about something very important. Isn't that right, Nicholas?
- 1:09:55Speaker 5: Oh, that's right.
- 1:09:56Speaker 25: Bill and Chris have been telling you about OTC Live
- 1:09:58Speaker 25: for a long time.
- 1:09:59Speaker 7: But there's no better time than now.
- 1:10:00Speaker 15: To join into the show live.
- 1:10:02Speaker 5: That's right, Nick.
- 1:10:03Speaker 25: Every Sunday night at 6 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, you
- 1:10:06Speaker 25: can see the show live. But how can you think
- 1:10:09Speaker 25: of anything better to do on a Sunday night? Bill
- 1:10:11Speaker 25: and Chris will talk about very exciting topics such as music, movies,
- 1:10:14Speaker 25: and pretty much anything else that revolves around pop culture. Plus,
- 1:10:18Speaker 25: they'll answer very important questions.
- 1:10:20Speaker 5: Like, how is your sex life? And other important questions
- 1:10:22Speaker 5: such as, how to get burned.
- 1:10:24Speaker 15: So check in every Sunday night at 6 p.m.
- 1:10:27Speaker 25: At www.tv.outsidethecinema.com.
- 1:10:39Speaker 5: Ladies and gentlemen, George the Animal Steel.
- 1:10:43Speaker 6: You played for years like a... You kind of played
- 1:10:46Speaker 6: down your intelligence as a wrestler over the years, but
- 1:10:49Speaker 6: it was interesting to find out that you have a
- 1:10:51Speaker 6: master's degree, you've been a teacher for years. Do people
- 1:10:54Speaker 6: usually kind of get the wrong idea about you?
- 1:10:57Speaker 19: People go to my website and it just blows them away,
- 1:10:59Speaker 19: the whole story. I mean, the learning disability, the fact
- 1:11:02Speaker 19: that I couldn't read or write going through high school,
- 1:11:04Speaker 19: that I got a master's degree from... I played ball
- 1:11:07Speaker 19: at Michigan State, I... Taught school for 25 years with
- 1:11:11Speaker 19: a learning disability. But all that has come back in
- 1:11:16Speaker 19: a different way. I got very sick with Crohn's. That's
- 1:11:19Speaker 19: when I retired from wrestling. Actually, when I did the
- 1:11:21Speaker 19: movie Ed Wood, my head is all swollen, which made
- 1:11:24Speaker 19: me look like Tor a little bit. And that was
- 1:11:27Speaker 19: another gift. It all turned out, all this led me
- 1:11:30Speaker 19: to the Lord Jesus Christ. So it's all been a
- 1:11:32Speaker 19: blessing for me. My website, georgiannalsteel.com, it's got that whole
- 1:11:36Speaker 19: story in there.
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: Very cool.
- 1:11:38Speaker 6: We will definitely send people there. Is there any projects
- 1:11:41Speaker 6: or anything coming up you want to tell people about?
- 1:11:43Speaker 19: No, my project is sitting back on the beach and
- 1:11:45Speaker 19: enjoying life.
- 1:11:46Speaker 12: That's a good project, actually.
- 1:12:02Speaker 21: So now another entry in our series on filmmakers. This time,
- 1:12:06Speaker 21: John Russo. Probably best known as co-writer of the classic
- 1:12:09Speaker 21: Night of the Living Dead, he's also a director in
- 1:12:11Speaker 21: his own right, a well-respected author, a producer, and even
- 1:12:15Speaker 21: an actor when need be. So it's time to focus
- 1:12:18Speaker 21: on John Russo.
- 1:12:25Speaker 7: What was your introduction to movies when you were young?
- 1:12:28Speaker 13: Well, the very first movie I ever saw, I think,
- 1:12:31Speaker 13: was the old Buffalo Bill movie.
- 1:12:33Speaker 3: It was made in 1939. That was.
- 1:12:35Speaker 13: You know, that was already an old movie when I
- 1:12:38Speaker 13: was a kid, but the babysitter took a whole... She
- 1:12:41Speaker 13: got paid to take a whole bunch of us kids
- 1:12:43Speaker 13: down to see a movie, and that's the.
- 1:12:44Speaker 3: One we saw.
- 1:12:45Speaker 13: The next movie that I ever saw, I believe, or
- 1:12:48Speaker 13: maybe even first, was the old Phantom of the Opera.
- 1:12:51Speaker 3: My uncle was at my house, and he said, I'll.
- 1:12:54Speaker 5: Take you to a movie.
- 1:12:55Speaker 3: So we go down to the movie.
- 1:12:57Speaker 13: And I see Phantom of the Opera, and I have
- 1:12:58Speaker 13: terrible nightmares now and then after that. But I still
- 1:13:02Speaker 13: liked the horror films, and as I got older, I
- 1:13:05Speaker 13: saw every.
- 1:13:06Speaker 15: Movie that came into town.
- 1:13:08Speaker 5: We had three movie.
- 1:13:09Speaker 26: Theaters in West Baltimore and town, and the movies changed
- 1:13:14Speaker 26: twice a week. A lot of times they were double features,
- 1:13:18Speaker 26: and I just waited for them to change, and I
- 1:13:20Speaker 26: saw every movie because it was like 14 cents to
- 1:13:22Speaker 26: go to the movie.
- 1:13:24Speaker 13: Which was cheap even then. Then you turned 12 years
- 1:13:27Speaker 13: old and jumped up to 50 cents. That was tough.
- 1:13:31Speaker 7: Yeah, really.
- 1:13:32Speaker 5: So, that was the question.
- 1:13:35Speaker 6: I just like seeing how people get introduced into it.
- 1:13:39Speaker 6: Phantom of the Opera possibly scarred you for life.
- 1:13:42Speaker 13: But I never.
- 1:13:45Speaker 7: Thought that I'd be making movies.
- 1:13:47Speaker 13: Like most people thought, movies were made in Hollywood. I
- 1:13:50Speaker 13: didn't even realize until later... that movies were being made
- 1:13:53Speaker 13: in New York and New Jersey, and even the great
- 1:13:57Speaker 13: train robbery, I think, was made somewhere in Pennsylvania.
- 1:13:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:14:00Speaker 13: So, and movies, one of the Perils of Pauline movies
- 1:14:05Speaker 13: was made in Pittsburgh. Yeah. In fact, Pittsburgh, a lot
- 1:14:08Speaker 13: of people don't know this, the very first Nickelodeon was
- 1:14:11Speaker 13: in Pittsburgh. And there's a plaque on one of the
- 1:14:14Speaker 13: downtown buildings that shows.
- 1:14:16Speaker 5: Where it was.
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: I think it was Harris, J.P. Harris Company or something.
- 1:14:20Speaker 5: So.
- 1:14:21Speaker 13: Anyway, when I got hooked up with George Romero and
- 1:14:25Speaker 13: Russ Streiner, we all met when we were 18 years old,
- 1:14:28Speaker 13: and George came to Pittsburgh from New York to go
- 1:14:30Speaker 13: to college in Pittsburgh. And then George was the one
- 1:14:33Speaker 13: that said, we can make movies. And that became a
- 1:14:36Speaker 13: driving ambition to someday make a feature film, and we
- 1:14:40Speaker 13: had to do a lot of struggling until we got
- 1:14:41Speaker 13: to the point where we.
- 1:14:42Speaker 7: Could do it.
- 1:14:43Speaker 3: And then we made Night of the Living Dead.
- 1:14:46Speaker 6: And then, I mean, before that, the idea of Zombie was...
- 1:14:51Speaker 6: kind of up in the air and very different. What
- 1:14:53Speaker 6: was your first exposure to the term and then what
- 1:14:56Speaker 6: was a zombie?
- 1:14:57Speaker 3: Well, I think it might have been the title didn't stick.
- 1:15:01Speaker 13: In my head, but I think it might have been
- 1:15:03Speaker 13: The Walking Dead or I Live With A Zombie or
- 1:15:05Speaker 13: something like that.
- 1:15:07Speaker 3: And I probably saw.
- 1:15:08Speaker 13: It with my uncle or maybe some other kids and
- 1:15:12Speaker 13: they never impressed me.
- 1:15:15Speaker 3: I loved the Bela.
- 1:15:16Speaker 13: Lugosi movies and even the Frankenstein movies, but I thought zombies...
- 1:15:24Speaker 13: The way I say it is zombies weren't heavyweight fright
- 1:15:26Speaker 13: material like werewolves or zombies are because they didn't do anything.
- 1:15:30Speaker 13: They stumbled around, sometimes grabbed somebody, threw them against the wall,
- 1:15:35Speaker 13: sometimes tried to choke somebody.
- 1:15:37Speaker 3: Just not too impressive.
- 1:15:39Speaker 13: But when we made them flesh eaters.
- 1:15:43Speaker 3: That's what did the trick.
- 1:15:44Speaker 13: Now, we kind of combined some of the, without thinking
- 1:15:48Speaker 13: it out that way, combined some of the elements of
- 1:15:50Speaker 13: the vampire genre with the zombie genre, and it just
- 1:15:57Speaker 13: took off. It just struck a very atavistic chord in people.
- 1:16:01Speaker 13: You know, you don't want to be one. You don't
- 1:16:03Speaker 13: want to die and not die. It's a fate worse
- 1:16:07Speaker 13: than death and all that kind of thing.
- 1:16:10Speaker 6: And then, did you, I mean, it, at this point,
- 1:16:12Speaker 6: has become almost a set of rules. Did you keep
- 1:16:15Speaker 6: some sort of idea of what the basics of the
- 1:16:17Speaker 6: zombie mythology were at that point.
- 1:16:19Speaker 7: Or was it just sort of winging it?
- 1:16:21Speaker 13: Well, we had to come up with what the zombies
- 1:16:24Speaker 13: would be and how they would be. We kind of
- 1:16:27Speaker 13: invented those zombies, you know, what they would be as
- 1:16:30Speaker 13: we went along. For instance, when I played the zombie
- 1:16:33Speaker 13: who gets the tire iron in the head, I figured that...
- 1:16:37Speaker 13: Some amount of rigor mortis would remain, probably a considerable amount.
- 1:16:41Speaker 13: So I just stretched my face out of shape and
- 1:16:46Speaker 13: moved like I couldn't hardly make my muscles work, and
- 1:16:49Speaker 13: that's what I did. So they aren't even my teeth.
- 1:16:54Speaker 3: I took some vampire.
- 1:16:55Speaker 13: I wanted to give my face a subtly different look,
- 1:16:58Speaker 13: so I took some vampire teeth, plastic teeth, and cut
- 1:17:03Speaker 13: the fangs off.
- 1:17:05Speaker 7: And more of those.
- 1:17:06Speaker 13: And then, like I said, I twisted my face all
- 1:17:09Speaker 13: shaped so badly that I used to get headaches after
- 1:17:12Speaker 13: I was done doing the thing.
- 1:17:15Speaker 7: Method acting. Yeah.
- 1:17:18Speaker 6: Since then, it seems like people have really come up
- 1:17:20Speaker 6: with a lot of social commentary in the original one.
- 1:17:23Speaker 6: Was it something that you were really trying to make
- 1:17:25Speaker 6: a statement on, or was it sort of something that
- 1:17:27Speaker 6: came about as time went on?
- 1:17:30Speaker 13: We weren't trying to make any social commentary. What we
- 1:17:33Speaker 13: were trying to do was to make a very realistic
- 1:17:36Speaker 13: movie so that once you accepted the premise that the
- 1:17:39Speaker 13: dead would come back and would become flesh eaters, then
- 1:17:43Speaker 13: we wanted everything that happened to be logical. We wanted
- 1:17:46Speaker 13: the people to behave like real people would if such
- 1:17:50Speaker 13: a thing actually happened. We didn't want holes in the logic.
- 1:17:53Speaker 13: We didn't want cardboard characters. We wanted real people and
- 1:17:59Speaker 13: so on.
- 1:17:59Speaker 3: So as it turns.
- 1:18:01Speaker 13: Out and again we didn't think of it this way but.
- 1:18:08Speaker 5: After the fact.
- 1:18:08Speaker 3: It kind of dawned on me that Night of the Living.
- 1:18:11Speaker 13: Dead is sort of like Stagecoach with zombies instead of
- 1:18:15Speaker 13: Indians you know it's the classic thing of human beings
- 1:18:19Speaker 13: faced with an incomprehensible jeopardy and how are they going
- 1:18:25Speaker 13: to survive it or are they are they going to
- 1:18:27Speaker 13: work together or are there weaknesses and they're ego problems
- 1:18:31Speaker 13: and everything else going to destroy them so you know
- 1:18:35Speaker 13: one uh i mean african queen is almost the same.
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: Kind of thing so it's the it's.
- 1:18:40Speaker 13: The human condition you know the human spirit is we
- 1:18:43Speaker 13: have a drive to survive obviously or we wouldn't have
- 1:18:47Speaker 13: and are we going to survive and overcome any particular situation?
- 1:18:52Speaker 7: It is interesting.
- 1:18:52Speaker 6: It's become one of the most, you know, basic plot
- 1:18:55Speaker 6: lines since then. So it's good to see kind of
- 1:18:57Speaker 6: these roots and westerns and other stuff that you guys
- 1:19:00Speaker 6: were drawing from.
- 1:19:01Speaker 13: John Carpenter did Attack on Precinct 16, and I called it...
- 1:19:07Speaker 13: Night of the Living Attack on Precinct 13. He just
- 1:19:09Speaker 13: modeled it right after Night of the Living Dead.
- 1:19:14Speaker 19: At one point he admitted that.
- 1:19:18Speaker 6: But yeah, it seems like so many movies have kind
- 1:19:20Speaker 6: of taken a pretty direct takeoff of that plot line.
- 1:19:24Speaker 7: So yeah, it's kind of cool.
- 1:19:26Speaker 6: I was going to ask some of your other directing
- 1:19:28Speaker 6: efforts as you went on too and got into that.
- 1:19:30Speaker 7: Is that something you planned on going into later?
- 1:19:34Speaker 13: Well, once you want to be a filmmaker, you know,
- 1:19:36Speaker 13: I mean, I became a really good cameraman. I shot
- 1:19:39Speaker 13: a lot of the stuff that's on the television in
- 1:19:41Speaker 13: Night of the Living Dead, because I would shoot 16mm.
- 1:19:45Speaker 13: Most of the time, I would be assistant cameraman to
- 1:19:47Speaker 13: George when we were shooting 35, and we traveled around,
- 1:19:50Speaker 13: we got the pickup shots, we did all kinds of things,
- 1:19:53Speaker 13: but other times, he'd be shooting 35, Russ would be
- 1:19:56Speaker 13: helping him, and I would be shooting with the 16mm
- 1:20:00Speaker 13: Eclair camera, which I loved, and I would get footage
- 1:20:04Speaker 13: for the scenes that were on.
- 1:20:05Speaker 6: The television interesting so that sort of led to it
- 1:20:09Speaker 6: um i was i was looking back at some of
- 1:20:10Speaker 6: the other projects um i haven't found a version of
- 1:20:13Speaker 6: it but uh i have seen the trailer for the
- 1:20:15Speaker 6: booby hatch yeah how did that come about uh.
- 1:20:20Speaker 13: That was in the days of the sex revolution you
- 1:20:23Speaker 13: had people like we had porn stars and in the
- 1:20:27Speaker 13: madams of uh houses of prostitution.
- 1:20:30Speaker 3: You had people like Linda Lovelace and what's her name?
- 1:20:37Speaker 3: Famous Madam.
- 1:20:40Speaker 17: And they were giving.
- 1:20:43Speaker 13: Love advice and sex advice to people in national magazines.
- 1:20:47Speaker 5: And I said, well, here's.
- 1:20:51Speaker 26: A girl who screws dogs and people are learning about
- 1:20:56Speaker 26: how to conduct their sex life from her.
- 1:20:58Speaker 12: Wow.
- 1:20:59Speaker 13: And so I came into Russell's office one morning when
- 1:21:02Speaker 13: we had New American Films, our company at the time,
- 1:21:04Speaker 13: and I said, you know, I'd like, if there are
- 1:21:06Speaker 13: companies that make dildos and vibrators and other exotic sex products,
- 1:21:11Speaker 13: more exotic sex products than that, then there must be
- 1:21:14Speaker 13: product testers.
- 1:21:15Speaker 3: And I'd like to make a movie about the product
- 1:21:18Speaker 3: testers and how their lives are all screwed up in different.
- 1:21:20Speaker 13: Ways and they can't figure out why their lives are
- 1:21:23Speaker 13: screwed up. Well, Rudy Ritchie, our partner at the time,
- 1:21:26Speaker 13: just said, laugh so hard he fell on the floor
- 1:21:30Speaker 13: and then we started doing that film we started writing
- 1:21:33Speaker 13: it and made it if we would have had money
- 1:21:34Speaker 13: it would have been a terrific film it's a Woody
- 1:21:37Speaker 13: Allen type sex comedy and parts of it are as
- 1:21:41Speaker 13: good as whatever things that Woody Allen did.
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: But you know with the lack.
- 1:21:48Speaker 13: Of money I wanted to create an entire super sexed
- 1:21:51Speaker 13: up society where people are going on a bus to
- 1:21:55Speaker 13: work and crowded bus and On the hills above the city,
- 1:21:59Speaker 13: there are huge billboards for various sex products and so
- 1:22:03Speaker 13: on and so on.
- 1:22:04Speaker 7: We didn't have the money to do that.
- 1:22:06Speaker 3: We made the film.
- 1:22:08Speaker 13: For $ 20, 000.
- 1:22:08Speaker 3: Yeah, that's amazing. I'm not counting the blow-ups. It started out,
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: it was doing $ 8, 000 a screen back.
- 1:22:16Speaker 16: In the 70s.
- 1:22:17Speaker 3: Then we ran all the theaters that would play it.
- 1:22:21Speaker 7: So, still people get a kick out of it.
- 1:22:24Speaker 5: Oh, and then.
- 1:22:26Speaker 6: As far as writing Return of the Living Dead, what
- 1:22:28Speaker 6: did you set out to do with that one that
- 1:22:30Speaker 6: was kind of different from the original timeout?
- 1:22:33Speaker 13: Well, we wrote a straight horror actual sequel in the
- 1:22:37Speaker 13: same vein of Night of the Living Dead.
- 1:22:39Speaker 3: We just wanted to take the story forward.
- 1:22:42Speaker 13: And I think I like toying with religious themes and
- 1:22:48Speaker 13: being a little ironic.
- 1:22:50Speaker 7: With it and.
- 1:22:52Speaker 13: I just thought that if the dead ever came back
- 1:22:55Speaker 13: to life and if the phenomenon was ever quelled, especially
- 1:22:59Speaker 13: with people not knowing exactly how it was quelled, it's
- 1:23:03Speaker 13: like the Black Plague. Nobody knew it went away, but
- 1:23:06Speaker 13: why did it go away and when's it going to
- 1:23:07Speaker 13: come back?
- 1:23:08Speaker 3: So I thought there.
- 1:23:13Speaker 13: Would be people who believed that it was going to
- 1:23:17Speaker 13: happen again and they'd want to keep taking measures against it.
- 1:23:20Speaker 5: And so.
- 1:23:21Speaker 13: there might be religious cults that sprung up where people
- 1:23:24Speaker 13: thought the dead should be spiked. And so that straight
- 1:23:28Speaker 13: horror version opens with the funeral of a child, and
- 1:23:31Speaker 13: the farmer whose father of that child has handed a
- 1:23:36Speaker 13: spike and has to drive it.
- 1:23:37Speaker 3: Into his own child's head. And then the bus wrecks
- 1:23:40Speaker 3: and other people are in.
- 1:23:41Speaker 13: Danger, and they set out to spike those, and then
- 1:23:44Speaker 13: the sheriff stops them, and so now.
- 1:23:46Speaker 3: It's right for those people to come back, so.
- 1:23:50Speaker 13: that was the rationale bring them back and then now
- 1:23:53Speaker 13: what can you do to take it in a different
- 1:23:55Speaker 13: direction than Night of the Living Dead so we opened
- 1:23:57Speaker 13: it up with the raiding party and because there would
- 1:24:02Speaker 13: be people taking advantage of such a crisis of looting
- 1:24:07Speaker 13: and raping and so.
- 1:24:08Speaker 5: On and there would be good.
- 1:24:11Speaker 13: Guys too trying to stop them and stop the plague
- 1:24:14Speaker 13: and zombie so that was the whole idea of Return
- 1:24:18Speaker 13: of the Living Dead and And then we finally had
- 1:24:23Speaker 13: to sell the screenplay because nobody would finance it. Frank
- 1:24:27Speaker 13: Sinatra was going to finance it, and we went out
- 1:24:29Speaker 13: to Las Vegas to close the deal, and his mother's
- 1:24:32Speaker 13: plane went down to the mountains, and she was killed,
- 1:24:34Speaker 13: and so the deal didn't go through. And we sold
- 1:24:37Speaker 13: the script for a lot of money, but lost control
- 1:24:41Speaker 13: of the project, and then Orion pictures said straight horror
- 1:24:45Speaker 13: is dead, don't make straight horror, they hark down a
- 1:24:48Speaker 13: balance and turn it.
- 1:24:49Speaker 3: Into comedy, and that's, you know, so the script got
- 1:24:52Speaker 3: pretty fast.
- 1:24:53Speaker 7: Yeah, that changed from, you know, yeah.
- 1:24:55Speaker 3: Which he did a good job.
- 1:24:56Speaker 7: Yeah. It's a good movie.
- 1:24:57Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:24:58Speaker 6: I guess you'd mentioned a lot of your writing, which
- 1:25:00Speaker 6: do you find more fulfilling, your writing or the directing
- 1:25:02Speaker 6: end of it?
- 1:25:04Speaker 13: Well, they're different animals, you know, when I'm in a
- 1:25:07Speaker 13: cubicle for a while writing, then I want to do
- 1:25:09Speaker 13: something more social and more interactive like a movie is,
- 1:25:12Speaker 13: but The advantage of books is you do it your way.
- 1:25:15Speaker 13: My editors don't mess with my stuff. They might have suggestions,
- 1:25:18Speaker 13: but they're mine. They're my things.
- 1:25:21Speaker 3: But when you do a movie, it's a collaborative process.
- 1:25:24Speaker 13: And if you have financiers or producers or studios or
- 1:25:29Speaker 13: whatever that tell you that metal.
- 1:25:33Speaker 3: and.
- 1:25:33Speaker 13: Don't really know their ass from a hole in the ground,
- 1:25:36Speaker 13: then you're going to have a botched-up movie.
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: That's happened too. But then the director always gets blamed.
- 1:25:42Speaker 7: Yeah, as always.
- 1:25:44Speaker 13: The other side of that is the director gets credit,
- 1:25:47Speaker 13: which is not always true either. The writer deserves a
- 1:25:50Speaker 13: hell of a lot of credit because nothing would happen
- 1:25:53Speaker 13: without the writer's idea. It kills me when I say, oh,
- 1:25:56Speaker 13: so-and-so's vision. The director's vision.
- 1:25:59Speaker 3: Is this one. Oh, bullshit. If he didn't write it,
- 1:26:01Speaker 3: it wasn't his vision.
- 1:26:02Speaker 7: It was the writer's. He's interpreting.
- 1:26:05Speaker 5: Executing.
- 1:26:06Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:26:07Speaker 7: Did you have any new projects you wanted to tell
- 1:26:09Speaker 7: people about?
- 1:26:11Speaker 13: Well, a lot of people know that probably that we are,
- 1:26:14Speaker 13: it looks like, going to do Escape of the Living Dead,
- 1:26:16Speaker 13: which is back to the roots again. And I'm supposed
- 1:26:20Speaker 13: to direct that in January or February starting in Los Angeles.
- 1:26:25Speaker 3: So, I'm waiting to see if that actually goes through.
- 1:26:29Speaker 3: It is financed.
- 1:26:30Speaker 13: They have, well, we're told they paid the first installment,
- 1:26:33Speaker 13: so they sound serious about it. So we'll see if
- 1:26:37Speaker 13: they follow through.
- 1:26:39Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:26:39Speaker 6: Is there any place, like online, people should go to
- 1:26:41Speaker 6: check out what you've got coming or more?
- 1:26:43Speaker 3: IMDB has information.
- 1:26:46Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:26:46Speaker 13: You know, when it does start, it'll be heavily publicized,
- 1:26:49Speaker 13: and they probably won't have to hunt to find it.
- 1:26:51Speaker 7: Probably not. Thank you very much, sir.
- 1:26:54Speaker 16: Thank you.
- 1:26:55Speaker 21: We want to thank John for taking time to talk
- 1:26:57Speaker 21: to us. And kind of in the process, I've become
- 1:26:59Speaker 21: sort of interested in some of his other directorial projects.
- 1:27:02Speaker 21: So as a heads up to you playing the movie
- 1:27:05Speaker 21: Meltdown Home Game, I would definitely try to get a
- 1:27:07Speaker 21: hold of some of his older films. Certainly Midnight and Heartstopper, a.k.a.
- 1:27:12Speaker 21: Dark Craving. We're probably going to be talking about both
- 1:27:16Speaker 21: of those in the near future. So just a heads
- 1:27:18Speaker 21: up to try to get a hold of copies of
- 1:27:20Speaker 21: those if you'd like to... Watch along and join us
- 1:27:24Speaker 21: for upcoming discussions on the movies.
- 1:27:57Speaker 1: They should have known better when they came into town.
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: Every sign pointed to what could happen there. Every indication
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: told them to leave. Now, the wise guys in the bar,
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: the preacher's warning, and the sheriff who made hate a
- 1:28:12Speaker 1: way of life. Go, get out of town. We don't
- 1:28:15Speaker 1: want your kind here. But they stayed. They stayed, and
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: it became too late to leave. too late as the
- 1:28:23Speaker 1: clock approached midnight midnight now the book from the co-author
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: of night of the living dead comes to life on
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: the screen don't miss john russo's midnight.
- 1:28:41Speaker 5: It's part of your problem, you know.
- 1:28:42Speaker 1: You haven't seen enough movies.
- 1:28:44Speaker 3: All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 1:28:47Speaker 13: And now, on with the show.
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: My future.
- 1:28:53Speaker 9: Told.
- 1:28:55Speaker 5: Your future.
- 1:28:57Speaker 9: Are you recording me now? sure about needing my future told.
- 1:29:01Speaker 7: Yes i like gypsies i can't help.
- 1:29:03Speaker 5: It's gonna happen.
- 1:29:05Speaker 4: I know i don't want to have to wait to
- 1:29:07Speaker 4: find out what's gonna i don't want it to actually
- 1:29:09Speaker 4: have to happen before i know it's gonna happen.
- 1:29:12Speaker 7: But whether you give them 20 bucks or not your
- 1:29:13Speaker 7: future will happen.
- 1:29:16Speaker 4: But see remember that one time that your friend read
- 1:29:19Speaker 4: my future she was wrong.
- 1:29:22Speaker 5: Oh whatever she makes stuff up she did just.
- 1:29:25Speaker 9: Make I didn't appreciate that none. I gave her five bucks.
- 1:29:29Speaker 5: She's a charlatan.
- 1:29:30Speaker 7: She is, actually.
- 1:29:31Speaker 4: She was a snake oil salesman.
- 1:29:36Speaker 7: It's okay.
- 1:29:36Speaker 5: I tell her that all the time.
- 1:29:38Speaker 4: You call her a dirty gypsy snake oil salesman?
- 1:29:40Speaker 6: I don't know if I've used that term exactly, but
- 1:29:43Speaker 6: I probably tell her she's on crack quite regularly.
- 1:29:45Speaker 9: Because she is.
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: Oh, all right.
- 1:29:48Speaker 6: So we are now back in the vehicle, wrapping up
- 1:29:51Speaker 6: the trip home here after... Hanging out with the fabulous
- 1:29:56Speaker 6: horror peoples. You guys are pretty excited.
- 1:29:59Speaker 5: They are the horror peoples.
- 1:30:02Speaker 9: Danny Trejo almost shoulder checked me.
- 1:30:06Speaker 7: I told you, you should have shoved him.
- 1:30:08Speaker 5: Be like, what dude?
- 1:30:09Speaker 7: Get out of the way.
- 1:30:11Speaker 5: You should have totally started shit.
- 1:30:12Speaker 9: There's a restaurant called Yummy Yummy Asian Cuisine.
- 1:30:17Speaker 5: That we just passed by?
- 1:30:18Speaker 8: Yeah. Nice.
- 1:30:20Speaker 5: We almost need to eat there.
- 1:30:23Speaker 7: I don't know if you can follow up those wonderful
- 1:30:24Speaker 7: jalapeno poppers.
- 1:30:27Speaker 5: Check out this old Model T right there.
- 1:30:30Speaker 7: This dude's like 100. It was his original car.
- 1:30:34Speaker 9: He's fucking.
- 1:30:37Speaker 13: Old.
- 1:30:38Speaker 6: All right, let's see. We'll have some other fun wrap-up stuff.
- 1:30:41Speaker 6: So would you guys like to discuss Mr.
- 1:30:43Speaker 5: Hand? There's a magician.
- 1:30:46Speaker 7: I'm doing the motion right now, but you guys can't see.
- 1:30:48Speaker 5: Basically, look like a tool and stick your hand out.
- 1:30:52Speaker 5: That's what this guy was doing.
- 1:30:54Speaker 7: He's magic. He's magic.
- 1:30:56Speaker 5: Oh, God.
- 1:30:57Speaker 4: And this fucking knee pad, guys. There are these douches
- 1:31:00Speaker 4: that just slid around on knee pads. And, like, there's
- 1:31:03Speaker 4: this one. I don't know what he was supposed to be,
- 1:31:04Speaker 4: some type of retarded clown. But he, like, got in
- 1:31:07Speaker 4: my face, and I was like, yep, you're really scary.
- 1:31:09Speaker 5: And a douche bag.
- 1:31:12Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:31:12Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:31:13Speaker 9: I mean, I wish I don't.
- 1:31:15Speaker 4: I wish I had been, like, more on it, because
- 1:31:17Speaker 4: when he slid up to me, I should have.
- 1:31:18Speaker 9: Just kicked him in his balls.
- 1:31:20Speaker 7: That would have been pretty awesome. I still want somebody.
- 1:31:22Speaker 17: To just, like.
- 1:31:22Speaker 9: I learned him a lesson there.
- 1:31:24Speaker 6: Clock him as soon as they get up in their face.
- 1:31:26Speaker 6: Just knock the motherfucker out.
- 1:31:27Speaker 5: And were they paid participants, or were they just douchebags that.
- 1:31:31Speaker 7: Wanted to do that?
- 1:31:32Speaker 9: Who were those douchebags that wanted to do that?
- 1:31:33Speaker 5: I don't know. I can never tell with some of
- 1:31:35Speaker 5: these shows, because.
- 1:31:36Speaker 9: Who would pay those guys?
- 1:31:37Speaker 16: Come on.
- 1:31:38Speaker 7: I wouldn't, but.
- 1:31:39Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:31:39Speaker 6: They bring some weird people in at some shows, and.
- 1:31:43Speaker 5: If they got paid to be there, somebody got paid.
- 1:31:48Speaker 7: And it was us for having to look at them.
- 1:31:50Speaker 9: A booth of some sort.
- 1:31:51Speaker 7: Right.
- 1:31:52Speaker 9: Because they were trying to sell T-shirts or whatever.
- 1:31:54Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:31:57Speaker 5: Yeah, somebody needs to beat their ass.
- 1:32:00Speaker 7: Or worse, what you threatened, Marlene.
- 1:32:02Speaker 15: What?
- 1:32:03Speaker 7: What you threatened for that one guy.
- 1:32:05Speaker 4: That I hope he gets raped.
- 1:32:10Speaker 5: That's for Amazon. Yeah, it's a distribution center. Holy shit.
- 1:32:16Speaker 5: That makes sense.
- 1:32:17Speaker 4: That's why it doesn't take very long to get to.
- 1:32:20Speaker 9: Oh, a Coca-Cola plant. It's all futuristic. Does that room spin?
- 1:32:24Speaker 19: No.
- 1:32:25Speaker 5: I've always said that it looks like it's a UFO, though.
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: It does launch into space. Yeah.
- 1:32:30Speaker 6: Coca-Cola is from outer space. I think we're on to it.
- 1:32:32Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, here's the big-ass ladders right up here. I
- 1:32:37Speaker 5: think it's ladders. It's a big-ass something for.
- 1:32:41Speaker 5: Big-ass fans. Big-ass fans, that's what it is.
- 1:32:43Speaker 7: I'm sorry.
- 1:32:44Speaker 5: That's awesome. And there's a place up here that we'll
- 1:32:47Speaker 5: pass in just a little... It was a restaurant bar
- 1:32:52Speaker 5: called Fat Ponies.
- 1:32:56Speaker 19: Oh, nice.
- 1:32:57Speaker 5: It was amusing for a while for me, so.
- 1:33:00Speaker 4: It's better than, like, Fat Bitches.
- 1:33:04Speaker 5: That's just what you pick up at the bar. Well,
- 1:33:06Speaker 5: there is the correctional facilities right up here, just.
- 1:33:08Speaker 12: About a mile away.
- 1:33:09Speaker 5: I don't know that they want anybody knowing that there
- 1:33:13Speaker 5: are fat bitches on your road.
- 1:33:18Speaker 7: Anyway, the convention.
- 1:33:22Speaker 6: You were pretty excited about Diamond Dallas Page.
- 1:33:25Speaker 4: Yeah, I don't know why. I can't explain why I
- 1:33:28Speaker 4: was so excited about that. He just seemed so happy
- 1:33:30Speaker 4: and excited to be there.
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: He did look happy to be there, I think. He's like,
- 1:33:36Speaker 5: I'm not around these wrestling geeks anymore or something.
- 1:33:39Speaker 14: I don't know.
- 1:33:41Speaker 5: That's, yeah. Sometimes you have to appreciate the good things. Well,
- 1:33:44Speaker 5: he is, he did appear to be buddy, pretty good
- 1:33:47Speaker 5: buddies with Danny Trejo, so.
- 1:33:49Speaker 6: Yeah. They did, I mean, they were in a movie together.
- 1:33:52Speaker 6: They're co-stars.
- 1:33:53Speaker 5: Co-stars.
- 1:33:54Speaker 6: That makes them, that makes them buddies for the rest
- 1:33:56Speaker 6: of their life. Uh, they're in Devil's Rejects.
- 1:34:00Speaker 4: Two?
- 1:34:00Speaker 18: Oh.
- 1:34:01Speaker 16: Is it two?
- 1:34:01Speaker 8: No?
- 1:34:02Speaker 5: Just Devil's?
- 1:34:03Speaker 6: It is part two, kind of, sort of, but But
- 1:34:06Speaker 6: it is just The Devil's Redux.
- 1:34:07Speaker 7: Okay, sorry.
- 1:34:08Speaker 9: I don't remember Danny Trejo being in Devil's Redux.
- 1:34:10Speaker 6: Yeah, he's the, like, one of the guys they send
- 1:34:13Speaker 6: out after him. Like the bounty hunter kind of guys.
- 1:34:17Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 1:34:18Speaker 7: One of the million movies that Danny Trejo is in.
- 1:34:20Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm sure that was a stretch for him to
- 1:34:22Speaker 5: play a bounty hunter.
- 1:34:25Speaker 6: Well, sometimes he's a guy in a prison.
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: Right.
- 1:34:28Speaker 5: Sometimes he's a gang member.
- 1:34:30Speaker 20: Right.
- 1:34:30Speaker 5: Sometimes he's a former gang member.
- 1:34:32Speaker 7: Sometimes he's a reformed gang member.
- 1:34:33Speaker 6: Right. sometimes he's a mystical spiritual.
- 1:34:37Speaker 5: Leader sometimes he's yeah sometimes he's a native American.
- 1:34:40Speaker 6: Sometimes white people don't know the difference they're idiots you
- 1:34:44Speaker 6: know you can fool them into anything.
- 1:34:47Speaker 9: He could play an Asian dude for all we know.
- 1:34:48Speaker 6: He could we're white he could play white you know
- 1:34:52Speaker 6: we do not you know Danny Trejo we love so
- 1:34:55Speaker 6: much we will let him play any role.
- 1:34:56Speaker 9: We don't care he's a man of many talents.
- 1:34:59Speaker 7: That he is he is a short man short man.
- 1:35:03Speaker 6: That's why they put him next to Danielle They could
- 1:35:05Speaker 6: balance each other out. He would look really tall.
- 1:35:08Speaker 5: Yeah, but I thought I'd see him with some kind of, like,
- 1:35:12Speaker 5: you know, lift shoes on or something like that. He
- 1:35:14Speaker 5: didn't sell out. He wore normal-sized shoes.
- 1:35:18Speaker 4: Well, what Henry Rollins does, if someone's taller than him,
- 1:35:20Speaker 4: he just tries to headlock them and drag them down
- 1:35:23Speaker 4: to his level.
- 1:35:24Speaker 5: Which is awesome.
- 1:35:25Speaker 9: Maybe Nick Trejo should do that.
- 1:35:27Speaker 5: Yeah, he usually does. He just cuts you. That's all.
- 1:35:30Speaker 9: He just cuts your legs off. That's right.
- 1:35:33Speaker 5: And then you fall down, and he steps on you,
- 1:35:35Speaker 5: and he's taller than you.
- 1:35:36Speaker 7: So there, bitch. Take that.
- 1:35:38Speaker 5: What else did we see while we were there? We
- 1:35:41Speaker 5: didn't get into the hand man too much, but that's okay.
- 1:35:45Speaker 5: We won't need to.
- 1:35:46Speaker 7: Yeah, it's magic.
- 1:35:48Speaker 15: He's a no-name douchebag, so.
- 1:35:56Speaker 20: Probably not.
- 1:35:58Speaker 5: Probably not. because we'll get people calling us out again
- 1:36:04Speaker 5: that's what we do anything you know that person has
- 1:36:10Speaker 5: green eyes green eyed.
- 1:36:12Speaker 7: People yeah oh god.
- 1:36:19Speaker 5: Green eyed people greet me out either be pick a color.
- 1:36:26Speaker 7: Brown or blue Way to alienate like a third of
- 1:36:31Speaker 7: your audience.
- 1:36:32Speaker 5: Dumbass. I have green eyes.
- 1:36:35Speaker 7: So do I. I'm not listening to our show anymore.
- 1:36:40Speaker 4: I mean like really like one in three people aren't
- 1:36:44Speaker 4: gingers so I'm really down to by some strange coincidence
- 1:36:48Speaker 4: like one third of our audience happen to have.
- 1:36:51Speaker 9: Red hair and freckles.
- 1:36:52Speaker 7: You never know.
- 1:36:57Speaker 12: Oh, man.
- 1:36:58Speaker 4: And, I mean, like, I remember, I mean, I was
- 1:37:03Speaker 4: a freckly kid, and, like, I definitely, not so much now,
- 1:37:07Speaker 4: but definitely in.
- 1:37:08Speaker 9: My childhood, I was borderline ginger. No one ever made
- 1:37:11Speaker 9: fun of me for that, so, I mean.
- 1:37:13Speaker 5: Borderline ginger. Yeah.
- 1:37:14Speaker 7: So you're making up for it now by making fun
- 1:37:16Speaker 7: of all of them.
- 1:37:17Speaker 5: You can't even be a full ginger, borderline ginger.
- 1:37:20Speaker 7: I know.
- 1:37:21Speaker 5: Like, you, like, sort of got it.
- 1:37:24Speaker 7: Fucking half-blood ginger.
- 1:37:25Speaker 9: I don't have freckles now. That would be gross. I
- 1:37:28Speaker 9: would get them removed.
- 1:37:30Speaker 5: Yeah, because all people with freckles are gross. That's what
- 1:37:34Speaker 5: Marlene is saying.
- 1:37:35Speaker 4: I didn't say that.
- 1:37:38Speaker 5: Oh, God. Freckles on your face.
- 1:37:41Speaker 9: Aren't so bad, but body freckles gross me.
- 1:37:45Speaker 16: Out.
- 1:37:45Speaker 4: I'm not.
- 1:37:46Speaker 9: I can't help it.
- 1:37:48Speaker 4: Everybody has certain things that they're not attracted to. I
- 1:37:54Speaker 4: just saw some sheep.
- 1:37:55Speaker 5: You can have all the body hair you want, but
- 1:37:58Speaker 5: damn it, one of the body freckles. No, seriously.
- 1:38:00Speaker 12: It's off.
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: Body hair is okay. I mean, I dated a guy
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: with a hairy back and it was gross.
- 1:38:05Speaker 5: Was he George the Animal Skin?
- 1:38:07Speaker 4: Yeah, it was.
- 1:38:08Speaker 8: No.
- 1:38:08Speaker 5: Yes. Yes, it was.
- 1:38:16Speaker 12: Oh, man.
- 1:38:17Speaker 5: Oh, I wouldn't be surprised. I mean, he does seem
- 1:38:20Speaker 5: like somebody's grandpa. He doesn't seem like a former wrestler.
- 1:38:23Speaker 5: He just seems like, oh, that's granddad. He likes to
- 1:38:25Speaker 5: eat Werther's and wear plaid shirts.
- 1:38:30Speaker 7: And talk on the cell phone.
- 1:38:32Speaker 5: He looked like he was having trouble with that.
- 1:38:34Speaker 7: Cell phone, didn't he? Yeah, he kind of did.
- 1:38:38Speaker 5: How do these things operate?
- 1:38:39Speaker 7: I used to have a tin can of string. Well,
- 1:38:44Speaker 7: I mean.
- 1:38:49Speaker 4: I was pretty impressed by the Night of the Living
- 1:38:53Speaker 4: Dead writer, that guy.
- 1:38:55Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: He had a little, like, jean shirt that had the
- 1:38:59Speaker 4: pearl snaps. I love shirts with pearl snaps.
- 1:39:01Speaker 12: Oh, yeah.
- 1:39:01Speaker 7: He's a classy dude.
- 1:39:02Speaker 9: I was like, wow.
- 1:39:03Speaker 4: And then he was talking about how he likes to
- 1:39:05Speaker 4: work out.
- 1:39:06Speaker 5: He's got the zombie workout manual.
- 1:39:09Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 1:39:09Speaker 5: Coloring book.
- 1:39:10Speaker 7: Which was awesome.
- 1:39:11Speaker 9: It was awesome.
- 1:39:12Speaker 5: That was about the coolest thing I saw.
- 1:39:14Speaker 6: You should go pick yourself up a copy right now.
- 1:39:21Speaker 15: Oh, wow.
- 1:39:25Speaker 5: What did he say? That he was some kind of
- 1:39:28Speaker 5: fitness champion? I think he was a lifter in high school.
- 1:39:31Speaker 5: Isn't that what he said?
- 1:39:31Speaker 7: He was like a competitive lifter or something?
- 1:39:36Speaker 9: Man of many talents. Just like Danny Trejo.
- 1:39:38Speaker 5: That's right. All right.
- 1:39:42Speaker 6: So do we want to do the buzz for the week?
- 1:39:45Speaker 8: Sure.
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: All right.
- 1:39:46Speaker 5: We can roll on into what's the buzz?
- 1:39:48Speaker 23: Groovy.
- 1:39:48Speaker 13: Ah.
- 1:39:52Speaker 18: Why do these people.
- 1:39:59Speaker 4: Have fences around every one of their trees in their pasture?
- 1:40:02Speaker 13: Horses.
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: Bantha.
- 1:40:05Speaker 5: So the horses recognize not to run into the fences,
- 1:40:08Speaker 5: so they recognize not to run into the trees. There's
- 1:40:12Speaker 5: bantha roaming the land, and they eat trees.
- 1:40:15Speaker 9: So a horse can see a fence, but.
- 1:40:16Speaker 7: It can't see a tree?
- 1:40:17Speaker 5: I don't... They're taught to run alongside of the fence,
- 1:40:22Speaker 5: I think.
- 1:40:22Speaker 12: Oh, okay.
- 1:40:23Speaker 5: But, yeah, you only see that in horse country. You
- 1:40:26Speaker 5: don't see that with, like, cows and sheep.
- 1:40:27Speaker 7: Oh, okay.
- 1:40:29Speaker 6: That's crazy talk if ever I heard.
- 1:40:30Speaker 7: I know.
- 1:40:31Speaker 5: Horse people.
- 1:40:32Speaker 7: Fucking horse people.
- 1:40:33Speaker 5: Fucking horse people. Are you talking about, like, centaurs? Yeah,
- 1:40:39Speaker 5: fucking centaurs. Fucking centaurs.
- 1:40:41Speaker 7: Fuck those guys.
- 1:40:42Speaker 5: I can't believe they put all of them in the
- 1:40:44Speaker 5: Chronicles of Narnia. That ruined that movie.
- 1:40:47Speaker 7: All them.
- 1:40:48Speaker 5: What do you mean by that? That's what I mean.
- 1:40:50Speaker 5: Those people.
- 1:40:51Speaker 7: Those horse people.
- 1:40:52Speaker 5: Come on, grow some legs.
- 1:40:56Speaker 7: Real legs. Way to alienate the entire audience.
- 1:40:59Speaker 5: That's right.
- 1:41:00Speaker 7: That's right.
- 1:41:01Speaker 5: I want to hear some centaurs writing in telling me
- 1:41:04Speaker 5: how insensitive.
- 1:41:06Speaker 4: So, I was looking through some of those posters at
- 1:41:09Speaker 4: one of the booths, and there was this very explicit
- 1:41:12Speaker 4: centaur love scene illustration.
- 1:41:17Speaker 7: Horsey style?
- 1:41:19Speaker 9: I mean, it wasn't that explicit. It was just like.
- 1:41:21Speaker 5: What a rip-off.
- 1:41:22Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:41:23Speaker 7: I'm going to pay $ 10, damn it.
- 1:41:25Speaker 5: Did it show centaur boobies?
- 1:41:27Speaker 4: Yeah, it showed centaur boobies. That's what made it slightly explicit.
- 1:41:30Speaker 5: But no horse cock?
- 1:41:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:41:33Speaker 9: Centaur boobies, but no horse cock.
- 1:41:34Speaker 7: Ah, damn it.
- 1:41:36Speaker 5: Wasting my time. Man, buddy. It's not a horror poster
- 1:41:40Speaker 5: unless it's got boobies on it. That's true.
- 1:41:42Speaker 6: You were commenting on that midway through our poster shopping there. Yeah.
- 1:41:46Speaker 5: Well, I don't know that we were shopping.
- 1:41:48Speaker 7: I was.
- 1:41:48Speaker 5: I just didn't have any money. I was window shop.
- 1:41:51Speaker 5: There were no windows there. Does that count? I guess not.
- 1:41:56Speaker 13: All right. Hmm.
- 1:42:00Speaker 6: So one of the big rumors making the rounds this
- 1:42:02Speaker 6: week is that, you're going to love this one, Zac
- 1:42:06Speaker 6: Efron has apparently been offered the lead role in Albert
- 1:42:08Speaker 6: Hughes' upcoming live-action adaptation of the popular anime Akira.
- 1:42:14Speaker 9: What?
- 1:42:15Speaker 7: Wow.
- 1:42:16Speaker 4: Weird.
- 1:42:17Speaker 5: He is that floppy-haired kind of guy, isn't he? That's
- 1:42:21Speaker 5: the thing. I mean, that's going to piss a lot
- 1:42:23Speaker 5: of people off.
- 1:42:24Speaker 6: But at the same time, the more I thought about it,
- 1:42:26Speaker 6: I was like, you know, I mean, he's who you
- 1:42:29Speaker 6: would go with at this point. He's not only the
- 1:42:31Speaker 6: boy of the moment, but he's also the right age.
- 1:42:34Speaker 6: I mean, like, the other people they were throwing out
- 1:42:36Speaker 6: in the last couple years was Leonardo DiCaprio. And I'm like,
- 1:42:40Speaker 6: how old is that kid? I mean, you can't be
- 1:42:42Speaker 6: playing this little teenage kid anymore. And then they were
- 1:42:45Speaker 6: also throwing out our other new favorite dude.
- 1:42:50Speaker 5: Shia LaBeouf?
- 1:42:51Speaker 6: No, but at least he's sort of the right age.
- 1:42:55Speaker 5: Oh, Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Oh, I would love that.
- 1:42:57Speaker 7: Who is an awesome actor, but again, how old is he?
- 1:43:00Speaker 7: He doesn't look very old. He doesn't look that old.
- 1:43:02Speaker 6: Again, I've said that's sort of his own downfall at
- 1:43:05Speaker 6: this point is he can't play serious adult actors.
- 1:43:08Speaker 4: No, I think he can because I think he's a
- 1:43:09Speaker 4: strong enough actor that you buy him as a man.
- 1:43:12Speaker 6: I mean, yeah, he is, but to me he still,
- 1:43:14Speaker 6: he can't really play like he hasn't gotten to that
- 1:43:18Speaker 6: point of being playing, like, adult leading man kind of roles. He's,
- 1:43:22Speaker 6: he's trying, and, and I'm, I haven't seen him in,
- 1:43:25Speaker 6: you know, Inception yet, so maybe he's pulling it off,
- 1:43:27Speaker 6: but when I see him in the other stuff, I
- 1:43:29Speaker 6: see him as a good actor, but he can still play,
- 1:43:31Speaker 6: he's at that crossover.
- 1:43:32Speaker 7: He's not a kid anymore.
- 1:43:33Speaker 6: He can play, like, the, the romantic comedy 20-something guy, but, like,
- 1:43:37Speaker 6: I can't see him wearing a suit and, you know,
- 1:43:39Speaker 6: and pulling off the adult roles.
- 1:43:42Speaker 12: Alright.
- 1:43:43Speaker 5: I think he did a fine job in Inception. I
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: think he works. My biggest problem with him is their
- 1:43:52Speaker 5: characters were so much like him and Leonardo DiCaprio's, and they're,
- 1:43:57Speaker 5: you know, both youngish, you know, similar kind of actors, honestly.
- 1:44:02Speaker 5: I kind of put them in the same category. That
- 1:44:05Speaker 5: it really wasn't... It was almost like, were these characters overlapping?
- 1:44:10Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 1:44:11Speaker 8: So.
- 1:44:12Speaker 5: was he really needed kind of thing. Not that he
- 1:44:14Speaker 5: did a bad job, but I think he could pull
- 1:44:16Speaker 5: that off. I think he'd do just fine. I think
- 1:44:19Speaker 5: the Efron thing works maybe, and this is just a
- 1:44:22Speaker 5: gut feeling, that he probably has more Asian crossover acceptance.
- 1:44:29Speaker 17: Probably, yeah.
- 1:44:30Speaker 5: I think they would be much more familiar with him.
- 1:44:36Speaker 5: Or at least accepting. Accepting, yeah.
- 1:44:39Speaker 6: He kind of looks like an anime character anyway.
- 1:44:41Speaker 4: But Joseph Gordon-Levitt almost looks Asian.
- 1:44:45Speaker 5: He kind of does.
- 1:44:47Speaker 4: I mean, like, not, like, full-on Asian, but he looks,
- 1:44:50Speaker 4: I mean, like... Just his features. He looks like maybe
- 1:44:54Speaker 4: his grandma was Japanese or something.
- 1:44:55Speaker 5: Like that he could have been.
- 1:44:56Speaker 13: Yeah.
- 1:44:57Speaker 5: I can see that.
- 1:44:58Speaker 7: But I mean, most characters in anime don't look Asian.
- 1:45:01Speaker 6: I know.
- 1:45:01Speaker 7: Is what's weird.
- 1:45:02Speaker 6: So it's like, I don't know that they would even
- 1:45:04Speaker 6: want anybody Asian going into this.
- 1:45:06Speaker 16: So.
- 1:45:07Speaker 5: Well, if they did, they should.
- 1:45:09Speaker 9: Just make Jet Li do it.
- 1:45:11Speaker 5: Except he's 100 now.
- 1:45:12Speaker 9: It would just be funny.
- 1:45:14Speaker 7: It would be hilarious.
- 1:45:16Speaker 5: I think he was driving that Model T back then. So,
- 1:45:21Speaker 5: I don't know. I mean, that's sort of a weird... Sorry,
- 1:45:25Speaker 5: I didn't know what that was.
- 1:45:27Speaker 6: I was like, did we just kill somebody?
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: I think we just hit someone.
- 1:45:33Speaker 4: Ah, shit.
- 1:45:34Speaker 5: I'd say we could cover it up, but it's on
- 1:45:36Speaker 5: the recording now. We're fine. We're screwed now. Now if
- 1:45:39Speaker 5: we really get someone, we can't pull it off. I
- 1:45:44Speaker 5: know what you did last podcast.
- 1:45:46Speaker 7: So, I don't know. I think everybody just gives Efron
- 1:45:49Speaker 7: shit because.
- 1:45:50Speaker 5: He's... Mostly the Disney connection.
- 1:45:52Speaker 6: I think if it wasn't for the stupid high school musical,
- 1:45:54Speaker 6: Disney connection, I think that's still what he's getting so
- 1:45:56Speaker 6: much flack for.
- 1:45:58Speaker 5: But at the same time, I think you can come
- 1:46:01Speaker 5: out of that. I was thinking back, it's like, look at...
- 1:46:04Speaker 5: Kurt Russell.
- 1:46:05Speaker 6: Kurt Russell started in Disney when he was a teenager.
- 1:46:07Speaker 5: Jodie Foster started with Disney when she was a teenager.
- 1:46:10Speaker 6: So it's like, these are people that kind of used
- 1:46:13Speaker 6: that because it was a good job, and they got
- 1:46:15Speaker 6: their name out there, and then they were also good actors,
- 1:46:17Speaker 6: and they drug themselves out of that, and were like,
- 1:46:20Speaker 6: I'm going to do these big, massive, A-list kind of roles,
- 1:46:23Speaker 6: and they ended up being good actors. So I think that's,
- 1:46:26Speaker 6: I don't know, it's one of those you can get
- 1:46:28Speaker 6: past that. I don't think that's the kiss of death, really.
- 1:46:30Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:46:31Speaker 5: I'm not upset. if the guy wants to try to
- 1:46:35Speaker 5: become a movie star and break out of that role, go,
- 1:46:39Speaker 5: go for it.
- 1:46:39Speaker 6: You know, they're still, they're giving him such like soft
- 1:46:43Speaker 6: other projects is the problem. It's like, actually, I still
- 1:46:45Speaker 6: want to see me in Orson Welles. That actually looks cool.
- 1:46:48Speaker 6: That looks like the first thing I'd be interested in
- 1:46:49Speaker 6: seeing of his, but like the Charlie St.
- 1:46:52Speaker 5: Cloud thing, I was like, what is this?
- 1:46:54Speaker 6: I don't even know what the idea is and what
- 1:46:56Speaker 6: little I've heard about it kind of is a weird
- 1:47:00Speaker 6: plot line. That's not going to sell with a lot
- 1:47:01Speaker 6: of people. And, It's still very family-friendly-like. It's still, like,
- 1:47:06Speaker 6: geared towards, you know, we'll have crossover and the kids
- 1:47:08Speaker 6: can go see it with Grandma. I'm just kind of like, eh,
- 1:47:11Speaker 6: that's not going to pull you out of this. So
- 1:47:13Speaker 6: he really does need to do something that's bigger. I mean,
- 1:47:15Speaker 6: I think this would be the kind of project that
- 1:47:18Speaker 6: could make him crossover. It would give him, like, that
- 1:47:20Speaker 6: mass appeal that would, you know, he could be that.
- 1:47:23Speaker 7: Speaking of the Shia LaBeouf, I mean, that was what
- 1:47:26Speaker 7: did it for him. He's in fucking Transformers.
- 1:47:28Speaker 6: And now that's what people, they don't remember him as
- 1:47:30Speaker 6: a stupid kid on Nickelodeon, you know? It's like, he's that.
- 1:47:33Speaker 5: It was Disney Channel, I think it was that.
- 1:47:35Speaker 9: It was Disney Channel.
- 1:47:36Speaker 7: Was that one Disney, too?
- 1:47:37Speaker 3: Yeah, it was.
- 1:47:38Speaker 5: Well, then there's your perfect example.
- 1:47:39Speaker 12: I mean.
- 1:47:40Speaker 5: He was Disney. He was Disney.
- 1:47:42Speaker 6: He turns up in fucking, you know, Transformers, and now
- 1:47:44Speaker 6: that's the only thing anybody remembers. Like, oh, that weirdo
- 1:47:47Speaker 6: from the Transformers movies.
- 1:47:48Speaker 5: And now he's in Indiana Jones. And now he's in
- 1:47:50Speaker 5: all these other projects.
- 1:47:52Speaker 7: He's in Wall Street, too.
- 1:47:53Speaker 5: Wall Street, too, yeah.
- 1:47:54Speaker 6: He was the other go-to, you know, kid that he
- 1:47:56Speaker 6: went for on any new project.
- 1:47:58Speaker 5: So it's like.
- 1:47:59Speaker 21: I don't know.
- 1:47:59Speaker 5: I think it's something that could work for Efron. I
- 1:48:03Speaker 5: think fans are going to be pissed.
- 1:48:04Speaker 6: I think just name recognition at this point, it's a
- 1:48:07Speaker 6: knee-jerk reaction to go, oh, God, fuck that guy.
- 1:48:10Speaker 5: It's what the cool kids do.
- 1:48:11Speaker 6: It's like you've got to make fun of the clean-cut
- 1:48:14Speaker 6: kid here. You've got to shove him down in the
- 1:48:16Speaker 6: hall because we're all jackasses and that's what we do.
- 1:48:19Speaker 24: But.
- 1:48:20Speaker 6: i don't know i think there's still you know something
- 1:48:22Speaker 6: i think he's unproven in this kind of thing and
- 1:48:25Speaker 6: i would actually like to see him do something that
- 1:48:28Speaker 6: had a little weight behind it and it would actually
- 1:48:29Speaker 6: give him a chance to be a real actor and
- 1:48:32Speaker 6: i don't know this could be it's still very up
- 1:48:35Speaker 6: in the air it could end up not even going
- 1:48:36Speaker 6: to him they're saying it's still uh Let's see, I
- 1:48:39Speaker 6: believe they phrase it as... One source says Efron is
- 1:48:44Speaker 6: in talks, while the other says it is far from
- 1:48:46Speaker 6: a done deal. So, at this point it could actually
- 1:48:49Speaker 6: go a very different direction.
- 1:48:51Speaker 5: They're just putting it out there and see what the
- 1:48:53Speaker 5: reaction is. Basically, yeah.
- 1:48:54Speaker 6: Just to see how much of an uproar they get
- 1:48:57Speaker 6: out of this. Which, again, in the geek community, in
- 1:49:00Speaker 6: the anime community, probably a lot. But, you never know.
- 1:49:04Speaker 5: Who else are they going to get? That's going to
- 1:49:07Speaker 5: have mass appeal, young age.
- 1:49:09Speaker 6: Who's the right age that has that kind of.
- 1:49:12Speaker 5: Because it even wouldn't.
- 1:49:13Speaker 7: Be that bad look-wise.
- 1:49:15Speaker 6: I can see it kind of working on a lot
- 1:49:18Speaker 6: of levels and definitely from the financial end.
- 1:49:20Speaker 7: He's such a recognizable name.
- 1:49:22Speaker 6: He's got such a built-in audience of pre-teens and people
- 1:49:25Speaker 6: that by the time they get this out will be
- 1:49:27Speaker 6: teenagers and will be able to drive themselves to the
- 1:49:30Speaker 6: movies and go see the new Akira movie.
- 1:49:31Speaker 5: So I don't think it's the worst idea for them financially.
- 1:49:35Speaker 4: Nope.
- 1:49:37Speaker 7: Were you awake back then?
- 1:49:38Speaker 16: Yes.
- 1:49:38Speaker 17: Okay.
- 1:49:39Speaker 4: Well, it wasn't until you asked me that question. But, yeah,
- 1:49:45Speaker 4: I can't think of anyone else who's better. I mean,
- 1:49:47Speaker 4: it sucks when they cast someone and you're annoyed because
- 1:49:50Speaker 4: you can think of a million people who'd be better.
- 1:49:52Speaker 4: But I can't really think of anyone who would be, like, awesome.
- 1:49:57Speaker 6: Yeah, the only other thing I worry about is the director,
- 1:50:00Speaker 6: Albert Hughes, is talking about the film being PG-13. To me,
- 1:50:04Speaker 6: that's almost like... kind of cutting it a little too...
- 1:50:09Speaker 6: You know, and they're kind of cutting it back to
- 1:50:10Speaker 6: get that crowd.
- 1:50:11Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:50:13Speaker 5: And maybe it is.
- 1:50:14Speaker 6: Maybe it is something that would tie to that Zac
- 1:50:16Speaker 6: Efron thing, because maybe they think they can pull in
- 1:50:18Speaker 6: a much larger crowd if they make it PG-13.
- 1:50:21Speaker 4: So.
- 1:50:22Speaker 7: Because the original anime is rated R.
- 1:50:25Speaker 16: Right.
- 1:50:25Speaker 5: At least when it got to this country, it was
- 1:50:27Speaker 5: rated R.
- 1:50:27Speaker 4: So.
- 1:50:29Speaker 5: if you're not.
- 1:50:29Speaker 6: Going to be able to live up to what the
- 1:50:31Speaker 6: other one is, because that's such an iconic property.
- 1:50:34Speaker 5: It's like everybody's going to compare it to the anime version. So,
- 1:50:38Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 1:50:38Speaker 6: It's like you've got so much to live up to
- 1:50:40Speaker 6: with that one. I think if you then kind of
- 1:50:42Speaker 6: softball it and be like, well, we'll cut back and
- 1:50:45Speaker 6: we'll take out, you know, violence and we'll take out
- 1:50:47Speaker 6: language and any of the sexual stuff and now you're
- 1:50:49Speaker 6: going to have this PG-13.
- 1:50:50Speaker 5: Yeah, what are you going to have, Yu-Gi-Oh then?
- 1:50:52Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean, at what point are you cutting it
- 1:50:54Speaker 7: back to get Speed Racer out.
- 1:50:56Speaker 22: Of it, you know?
- 1:50:57Speaker 5: Yeah, that'd probably be the best comparison. I don't know.
- 1:51:00Speaker 6: That worries me more than Zac Efron is the PG-13 angle.
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: That they run. Yeah, that's why I wish, if you're
- 1:51:07Speaker 5: going to have something last and going to have something
- 1:51:10Speaker 5: be good, go all out, do it right, do it
- 1:51:15Speaker 5: right the first time, and the money will come. Eventually,
- 1:51:19Speaker 5: the money will come. If it's worth it, yeah.
- 1:51:20Speaker 6: Right.
- 1:51:21Speaker 5: And those people that would love it will grow up
- 1:51:26Speaker 5: and will see it. And they'll pay probably a lot
- 1:51:30Speaker 5: more money later on down the road when they can
- 1:51:33Speaker 5: develop to love it. Don't just make it suck so
- 1:51:38Speaker 5: that you can make more money now. That's the corporate way.
- 1:51:41Speaker 5: I don't want to beat a dead horse, but just
- 1:51:43Speaker 5: make it good and the money will come.
- 1:51:47Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean, as we referenced earlier with stuff like
- 1:51:51Speaker 6: those big properties like Lord of the Rings or something,
- 1:51:53Speaker 6: I mean, they could have done a crappy version of that.
- 1:51:55Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:51:56Speaker 6: And probably still made a pretty damn, you know, impressive opening.
- 1:52:00Speaker 6: But in the end, it's like, you've got a good director,
- 1:52:02Speaker 6: you've got somebody who put tons of time in it
- 1:52:05Speaker 6: and all this effort and gave us a good product
- 1:52:07Speaker 6: at the end of it.
- 1:52:08Speaker 5: So it's like, I think that's the way to.
- 1:52:10Speaker 6: Go, is to look at these properties and see what's,
- 1:52:12Speaker 6: you know, artistically, what's better in the end. And I
- 1:52:14Speaker 6: know studio executives don't always look at that. They look
- 1:52:17Speaker 6: at the bottom line and what's going to make them
- 1:52:19Speaker 6: money and what's going to cost.
- 1:52:20Speaker 5: Less money and less time and.
- 1:52:22Speaker 6: But, I don't know, at the end, if you're left
- 1:52:23Speaker 6: with a crappy movie, what's the point? And you've also
- 1:52:26Speaker 6: wasted a perfectly good property and a property.
- 1:52:28Speaker 5: That people love.
- 1:52:29Speaker 6: I don't know, it just seems like such a bad
- 1:52:32Speaker 6: idea otherwise.
- 1:52:33Speaker 12: Right.
- 1:52:35Speaker 5: I think that's what saved, well, somewhat saved the Revenge
- 1:52:43Speaker 5: of the Sith. They went for a PG-13, at least
- 1:52:48Speaker 5: went for a PG-13, instead of a you know pg
- 1:52:52Speaker 5: practically g movie like they did with the first phantom
- 1:52:55Speaker 5: menace phantom menace and a kid's movie and a boring
- 1:52:58Speaker 5: kid's movie right and they made it you know something
- 1:53:03Speaker 5: you know that really showed you the horror and violence
- 1:53:07Speaker 5: of what was going on you know that you would
- 1:53:09Speaker 5: kill younglings and that you would you know that that's
- 1:53:13Speaker 5: what happened that's what should have happened and that's why
- 1:53:16Speaker 5: this guy really is that evil so.
- 1:53:18Speaker 6: Yeah i mean you look that's that's one of those
- 1:53:21Speaker 6: that finally i mean it took him three movies before
- 1:53:23Speaker 6: he stepped it up and went okay let's stop you
- 1:53:25Speaker 6: know dumbing it down and making it okay for everybody
- 1:53:29Speaker 6: to bring the kitties to it's like it's not that
- 1:53:31Speaker 6: kind of story i know you've made money on it
- 1:53:33Speaker 6: being a family feature but it was never really that
- 1:53:37Speaker 6: family friendly it was it was kind of a teenage
- 1:53:41Speaker 6: issue that's when we all you know really kind of
- 1:53:43Speaker 6: came to accept it for what it was and understood everything.
- 1:53:46Speaker 6: I mean, you like it when you're a kid because
- 1:53:48Speaker 6: there's laser swords and, you know, laser guns and, you know,
- 1:53:51Speaker 6: spaceships and robots and you love all that stuff. But,
- 1:53:54Speaker 6: I mean, there's a lot of other stuff going on
- 1:53:56Speaker 6: that you don't really comprehend until.
- 1:53:57Speaker 7: You're a teenager.
- 1:53:59Speaker 6: So, you know, that's when I think they... It kind
- 1:54:02Speaker 6: of clicks, and there's no point in dumbing it down.
- 1:54:04Speaker 6: I mean, you should kind of leave a story that's
- 1:54:08Speaker 6: complicated at that level and not try to make it
- 1:54:11Speaker 6: mass appeal so that it totally sucks the life out
- 1:54:14Speaker 6: of everything.
- 1:54:15Speaker 5: Yeah, so if you're listening, producers, just go for the R.
- 1:54:19Speaker 5: Make it a good movie. The tweens will grow up
- 1:54:22Speaker 5: and remember Zac Efron, and they'll buy it, and they'll
- 1:54:26Speaker 5: love it. So I'm fine with Efron. I'm not fine
- 1:54:30Speaker 5: with the PG-13. Yeah, pretty much. But I'm sure that's
- 1:54:33Speaker 5: how it'll end up. I know, but, you know.
- 1:54:36Speaker 7: What can you do?
- 1:54:38Speaker 6: So this is when we get to Baz Luhrmann, which
- 1:54:41Speaker 6: I actually like a lot of what he's done. I
- 1:54:45Speaker 6: have not seen, they're saying he's currently casting his next
- 1:54:48Speaker 6: movie after Australia, which is the only one of his
- 1:54:51Speaker 6: I haven't seen, actually. With a series of script readings,
- 1:54:56Speaker 6: the movie is an adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The
- 1:54:59Speaker 6: Great Gatsby.
- 1:55:00Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 1:55:01Speaker 4: Wow.
- 1:55:02Speaker 7: Interesting.
- 1:55:02Speaker 6: So the classic tale of life during the Roaring Twenties,
- 1:55:06Speaker 6: which they've done adaptations of a couple of times.
- 1:55:09Speaker 5: There's been.
- 1:55:10Speaker 6: a 1949 version with Alan Ladd and Shelley Winters, and
- 1:55:14Speaker 6: the bigger one recently, I guess, or in 74.
- 1:55:17Speaker 5: More recently, yeah.
- 1:55:18Speaker 6: Yeah, it's the one most people probably know. It's got
- 1:55:20Speaker 6: Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, so that's probably the one.
- 1:55:22Speaker 5: Yeah, that's the one I've seen. Yeah, that's the one
- 1:55:23Speaker 5: I've seen.
- 1:55:24Speaker 6: So, I mean, most people that are familiar with it
- 1:55:26Speaker 6: and too lazy to read the book are probably familiar
- 1:55:29Speaker 6: with that version of the movie.
- 1:55:30Speaker 5: Right. So, once again, going back to one.
- 1:55:34Speaker 6: Of the key running themes in the news this week,
- 1:55:38Speaker 6: For the roles of Jay Gaspi and Nick Carraway, Lerman
- 1:55:41Speaker 6: is doing the readings with real-life longtime pals Leonardo DiCaprio
- 1:55:45Speaker 6: and Tobey Maguire.
- 1:55:48Speaker 5: You know, if you had me pick two people, they
- 1:55:52Speaker 5: would probably be the first. You know, if he were younger,
- 1:55:57Speaker 5: if he were maybe 10, 15 years ago, I could
- 1:55:59Speaker 5: see Matt Damon.
- 1:56:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:56:04Speaker 5: And I know Matt Damon's not that much older than
- 1:56:06Speaker 5: Leonardo DiCaprio, but... But he reads older now. He reads
- 1:56:09Speaker 5: older now.
- 1:56:09Speaker 6: He aged a lot more in his look than either
- 1:56:13Speaker 6: of the other two there.
- 1:56:14Speaker 5: Right. But I think, yeah, I think they both could
- 1:56:17Speaker 5: pull it off well, and I probably couldn't think of
- 1:56:21Speaker 5: two other actors that would do a worse job. Yeah,
- 1:56:25Speaker 5: I mean... Yeah, a better job, yeah.
- 1:56:28Speaker 7: Again, some of us had issues with Leonardo, but.
- 1:56:33Speaker 5: With his acting style, but I think he's, I don't know,
- 1:56:36Speaker 5: I think he's actually, it doesn't surprise me that they're
- 1:56:39Speaker 5: giving him this.
- 1:56:40Speaker 6: This is such a major, high-profile kind of a property,
- 1:56:43Speaker 6: especially with Baz directing it, that there's only a handful
- 1:56:47Speaker 6: of people that are in that caliber that are going
- 1:56:50Speaker 6: to get the lead role in this movie, and again.
- 1:56:52Speaker 5: At this point, it's Leonardo.
- 1:56:54Speaker 6: He's your go-to guy for big properties like this, so.
- 1:56:58Speaker 5: It doesn't surprise me. I mean, it's questionable whether he's
- 1:57:02Speaker 5: going to be able to pull it off, but I
- 1:57:04Speaker 5: don't know. We'll have to see. Doesn't mean I'm going
- 1:57:06Speaker 5: to run out and see it. That's the thing I
- 1:57:09Speaker 5: was going to say. I will see it eventually, but
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: just not run out and see it. No, that's the thing.
- 1:57:15Speaker 7: I probably will see it. I don't know if it'll be...
- 1:57:17Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:57:18Speaker 6: This one's an interesting enough movie and idea that I
- 1:57:21Speaker 6: think I might be up for it.
- 1:57:23Speaker 5: But just based on Baz Luhrmann, I really... he's over.
- 1:57:30Speaker 6: The top and he's you know he comes up with
- 1:57:32Speaker 6: a lot of crazy stuff but but visually i think
- 1:57:34Speaker 6: he's always impressive every movie i've seen of his i've
- 1:57:37Speaker 6: been impressed with and especially by the you know the
- 1:57:40Speaker 6: second and third ones of his run were like really
- 1:57:44Speaker 6: i mean he really stepped it up and was just
- 1:57:46Speaker 6: like i'm going to show you something impressive it's like
- 1:57:49Speaker 6: he's gonna go out of his way to make sure
- 1:57:51Speaker 6: that it's an experience like everything about it is going
- 1:57:54Speaker 6: to be Almost overwhelming at times how above, you know,
- 1:57:58Speaker 6: how he goes above and beyond what a normal director
- 1:58:02Speaker 6: would do in a normal standard movie. His movies at least,
- 1:58:05Speaker 6: I don't know, I almost feel like I need to
- 1:58:08Speaker 6: watch Australia now. I was not excited by it, but
- 1:58:11Speaker 6: I can't even imagine him doing that kind of movie,
- 1:58:14Speaker 6: this epic, off in the countryside kind of a storyline.
- 1:58:20Speaker 6: It doesn't fit what I know of him as a director, so.
- 1:58:23Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 1:58:24Speaker 6: Maybe I'll have to go back and watch that. Again,
- 1:58:26Speaker 6: still not really excited about it. It does not look
- 1:58:29Speaker 6: very impressive. I've heard some bad things on the plot,
- 1:58:33Speaker 6: but whatever. But I think this is a different direction.
- 1:58:36Speaker 6: I think this is something that, you know, especially after
- 1:58:39Speaker 6: seeing him handle that Moulin Rouge period, I think this
- 1:58:43Speaker 6: version of the 20s.
- 1:58:45Speaker 5: falls right into that.
- 1:58:46Speaker 6: I think it's that same sort of world and that
- 1:58:48Speaker 6: same sort of lifestyle that he could tap into and
- 1:58:51Speaker 6: could very easily find his way of doing Great Gatsby.
- 1:58:56Speaker 6: So I think that's kind of an interesting project for him,
- 1:58:59Speaker 6: I think. They are saying the script readings really weren't
- 1:59:04Speaker 6: for those two. He already kind of had those two
- 1:59:06Speaker 6: in mind. They said it's actually for the Daisy Buchanan version.
- 1:59:09Speaker 6: for which a large group of young actresses are being considered.
- 1:59:12Speaker 6: The first read was actually Rebecca Hall, who was just
- 1:59:15Speaker 6: in the town. But they're saying the other list of
- 1:59:18Speaker 6: potential Daisies includes, in alphabetical order, Abby Cornish, Scarlett Johansson,
- 1:59:24Speaker 6: Keira Knightley, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman, Amanda Seyfried, and Michelle Williams.
- 1:59:29Speaker 6: That's everybody in Hollywood. That's your leading lady of that
- 1:59:33Speaker 6: age group.
- 1:59:34Speaker 7: That's everybody.
- 1:59:35Speaker 5: Well, I think Knightley and Portman almost seem like Givens.
- 1:59:39Speaker 6: Their go-to for that same level of project.
- 1:59:43Speaker 5: I think Scarlett Johansson would be a huge mistake. But
- 1:59:47Speaker 5: she's almost ahead of them on that list anymore.
- 1:59:49Speaker 6: She's getting just about every property.
- 1:59:51Speaker 5: But I just think she'd be a mistake for that move.
- 1:59:54Speaker 5: I think most people feel that way just because her
- 1:59:56Speaker 5: acting isn't... Just that character.
- 2:00:00Speaker 6: It's not up to the level of some of the
- 2:00:01Speaker 6: others on that list.
- 2:00:02Speaker 5: You know who I think would be the dark horse
- 2:00:05Speaker 5: that I think would do a fantastic job as Michelle
- 2:00:09Speaker 5: Williams from that list. I think she might. I just
- 2:00:15Speaker 5: don't like her. I think I brought that up recently.
- 2:00:18Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 2:00:19Speaker 6: I've just never been really impressed with her. But again,
- 2:00:22Speaker 6: this is a weird property. So maybe she'd find her
- 2:00:26Speaker 6: place in this period and maybe she'd be able to
- 2:00:28Speaker 6: work it.
- 2:00:29Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 2:00:30Speaker 6: I just don't like her much as an actress. But again,
- 2:00:34Speaker 6: I'll give everybody a shot in the right role in
- 2:00:36Speaker 6: the right movie.
- 2:00:37Speaker 17: Right.
- 2:00:38Speaker 5: I think what I've liked with her is she's learned
- 2:00:41Speaker 5: how to be a subtle actress. And maybe I'm giving
- 2:00:47Speaker 5: her more credit than she deserves. I don't know. I'd
- 2:00:49Speaker 5: have to re-look at her. I've never really heard anybody
- 2:00:53Speaker 5: be truly critical of her. You know what I'm saying?
- 2:00:57Speaker 5: But yeah, I'm not saying that she is... a top
- 2:01:01Speaker 5: notch or anything like that but again I'd give I'd
- 2:01:03Speaker 5: give her the shot is what I'm saying based on
- 2:01:05Speaker 5: past performance especially for that role you.
- 2:01:08Speaker 6: Know she's moving into bigger projects now so I mean
- 2:01:11Speaker 6: she actually may end up becoming more of a lead
- 2:01:14Speaker 6: she disappeared for a while and she kept coming back
- 2:01:17Speaker 6: in smaller roles and smaller movies but lately they've been
- 2:01:21Speaker 6: throwing a lot of stuff around with her name attached
- 2:01:23Speaker 6: to it so she may end up on that level again.
- 2:01:27Speaker 5: Yeah just not Scarlett Johansson.
- 2:01:29Speaker 6: We'll see I still say that's probably their first one
- 2:01:33Speaker 6: to go with just name recognition money-wise. They think they
- 2:01:36Speaker 6: could bring people in with Scarlett Johansson. I guess it
- 2:01:39Speaker 6: depends how low-cut were the dresses then. I don't remember
- 2:01:44Speaker 6: Mia Farrow being in a plunging neckline. So if they
- 2:01:48Speaker 6: can sell the boobs, they might be casting her. But
- 2:01:50Speaker 6: other than that, if they want to go with acting,
- 2:01:52Speaker 6: you know, whatever.
- 2:01:53Speaker 5: I'm not going to say that I wouldn't mind looking
- 2:01:55Speaker 5: at her for two hours.
- 2:01:56Speaker 7: Well, I think that's what we call Iron Man 2.
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:02:00Speaker 5: Why isn't there less of her acting, more of her
- 2:02:02Speaker 5: jumping around in that outfit? In that outfit, yeah. That's
- 2:02:05Speaker 5: what most people said.
- 2:02:06Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 2:02:08Speaker 7: Oh, man.
- 2:02:09Speaker 6: But, yeah, that wasn't the only news for Leonardo this week.
- 2:02:12Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:02:13Speaker 5: They said he is also, his.
- 2:02:14Speaker 6: Actor's production company has come on board to produce the
- 2:02:18Speaker 6: long-in-development adaptation of Eric Larson's non-fiction book, The Devil in
- 2:02:22Speaker 6: the White City.
- 2:02:24Speaker 22: Huh.
- 2:02:24Speaker 6: And this one, I don't know if you're familiar with
- 2:02:26Speaker 6: the book, but I like the plot line. It's kind
- 2:02:28Speaker 6: of crazy. I like where they're going with this. It said,
- 2:02:31Speaker 6: in addition to producing, DiCaprio will star as H.H. Holmes,
- 2:02:35Speaker 6: a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor who is
- 2:02:38Speaker 6: believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the
- 2:02:41Speaker 6: time of the 1893.
- 2:02:42Speaker 5: Chicago World's Fair.
- 2:02:44Speaker 6: The character Holmes designed the World's Fair Hotel, complete with
- 2:02:47Speaker 6: a crematorium and a gas chamber, which he used to
- 2:02:50Speaker 6: lure his victims into murderous traps. I kind of like
- 2:02:54Speaker 6: this story, as long as they don't get too sawed.
- 2:02:57Speaker 6: Because you could go, if you get into the trap bullshit,
- 2:03:01Speaker 6: I mean, and it's all over, so hopefully they don't, well,
- 2:03:03Speaker 6: we need to tap into that. I mean, hopefully it's
- 2:03:05Speaker 6: more of the crazy character. I like this, like, evil
- 2:03:09Speaker 6: doctor back in, you know, 1893.
- 2:03:10Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:03:11Speaker 6: So I like that angle of it, if we don't
- 2:03:13Speaker 6: get too, like, weird trap-oriented, that that becomes the entire
- 2:03:18Speaker 6: plot line.
- 2:03:19Speaker 7: But other than that, I kind of liked the.
- 2:03:22Speaker 5: Idea of what's going on in that.
- 2:03:23Speaker 6: That seems.
- 2:03:25Speaker 5: Does Leonardo DiCaprio have to do every period movie?
- 2:03:29Speaker 7: I think any movie, period.
- 2:03:30Speaker 5: How about that?
- 2:03:31Speaker 6: At this point, if it's a movie, period, you cast
- 2:03:35Speaker 6: Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 2:03:36Speaker 7: That's how it goes.
- 2:03:38Speaker 6: Or Scarlett Johansson. In addition to reading for The Great
- 2:03:41Speaker 6: Gatsby and starring in The Avengers, Scarlett Johansson is also
- 2:03:46Speaker 6: attached to starring in the science fiction drama called Under
- 2:03:49Speaker 6: the Skin. Johansson will be playing an alien on Earth,
- 2:03:53Speaker 6: disguised as the perfect aesthetic form of a mesmerizing woman.
- 2:03:56Speaker 6: She scours remote highways in desolate scenery, looking to use
- 2:03:59Speaker 6: her greatest weapon to snare human prey, heracious sexuality.
- 2:04:04Speaker 5: I believe we already had this, and it's called Species.
- 2:04:06Speaker 5: As soon as you're reading it, that's exactly what I thought.
- 2:04:08Speaker 7: Species.
- 2:04:10Speaker 5: So, they finish this up.
- 2:04:12Speaker 6: She is deadly efficient, but over time becomes drawn to
- 2:04:15Speaker 6: and changed by the complexity of life on Earth. With
- 2:04:18Speaker 6: this newfound humanity and weakened alien resolve, she finds herself
- 2:04:21Speaker 6: on a collision course with her own kind. So, now
- 2:04:23Speaker 6: it's like Species meets Starman.
- 2:04:26Speaker 5: Right. Or E.T. E.T.
- 2:04:27Speaker 6: Or, you know, any of these where all of a
- 2:04:29Speaker 6: sudden you become buddies with the alien and then.
- 2:04:31Speaker 7: You don't want to kill everybody.
- 2:04:32Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 2:04:33Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 2:04:35Speaker 6: I just need to go home, and then at the
- 2:04:36Speaker 6: end she'll go home, and it'll be a sad goodbye,
- 2:04:39Speaker 6: or whatever. Under the Skin will be directed by John Glazer,
- 2:04:42Speaker 6: who did Sexy Beast, actually, who also co-wrote the script
- 2:04:45Speaker 6: with newcomer Walter Campbell. Under the Skin is aiming to
- 2:04:48Speaker 6: start filming in spring of 2011. So, as if that
- 2:04:52Speaker 6: wasn't enough, the only thing that Scarlett Johansson won't be
- 2:04:55Speaker 6: starring in is that she has potentially ditched the attachment
- 2:04:59Speaker 6: to star in the adaptation of the mash-up novel of
- 2:05:03Speaker 6: Pride and Prejudice and Zombies.
- 2:05:05Speaker 5: Oh, but that one sounded like so much fun.
- 2:05:08Speaker 6: And it was going to be cheesy and over the
- 2:05:10Speaker 6: top so you can handle her acting.
- 2:05:12Speaker 5: Right. Yeah. Now, I don't necessarily need Scarlett Johansson in
- 2:05:17Speaker 5: that one either. But that one, I remember that one
- 2:05:19Speaker 5: sounds like fun.
- 2:05:20Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:05:22Speaker 6: I guess there's some making it. There's just somebody else
- 2:05:24Speaker 6: involved now and not Scarlett Johansson.
- 2:05:26Speaker 12: Right.
- 2:05:27Speaker 6: Which, by the way, did you know Scarlett Johansson is
- 2:05:29Speaker 6: the daughter of David Johansson?
- 2:05:32Speaker 5: Singer?
- 2:05:33Speaker 17: Oh, yeah.
- 2:05:34Speaker 5: No, I didn't know that. Lead singer of the New
- 2:05:35Speaker 5: York Dolls? Yeah, no. Yeah, that's not true. Oh, okay.
- 2:05:38Speaker 5: But doesn't that sound like something that could be true? Yeah, well,
- 2:05:40Speaker 5: I was going to be like, oh, that's how she
- 2:05:42Speaker 5: gets her clout, I guess. No, I had no idea.
- 2:05:46Speaker 6: I like when people just... randomly make connections. And that's
- 2:05:49Speaker 6: what brought that one up, because I was like, you know,
- 2:05:51Speaker 6: that's almost age-wise. That could be possible. Hell, they don't
- 2:05:55Speaker 6: even spell their name the same. I just thought it
- 2:05:56Speaker 6: was funny. So I'm like, if we're going to start
- 2:05:59Speaker 6: weird celebrity rumors that don't even... Like, not even a
- 2:06:02Speaker 6: negative rumor, just, like, wrong. Like, okay, everybody out there,
- 2:06:06Speaker 6: go out and tell people that, you know, be like...
- 2:06:08Speaker 6: Did you know David Johansson, that guy from the New
- 2:06:10Speaker 6: York Dolls, he's the dad of Scarlett Johansson.
- 2:06:13Speaker 5: Well, you knew that Jon Stewart is actually the nephew
- 2:06:17Speaker 5: of Jimmy Stewart.
- 2:06:18Speaker 12: Is he?
- 2:06:19Speaker 7: Yeah. Wow.
- 2:06:20Speaker 13: Right.
- 2:06:21Speaker 5: And I didn't know Jimmy Stewart was Jewish, so.
- 2:06:24Speaker 5: Well, what brought it up is I was thinking, because
- 2:06:26Speaker 5: people just randomly do that.
- 2:06:27Speaker 6: Because a couple weeks back when we watched Mystery Team,
- 2:06:31Speaker 6: I'm renting it and I'm standing there and I'm talking.
- 2:06:34Speaker 6: The guy's ringing me up and he looks at it
- 2:06:36Speaker 6: and he's like, oh, yeah, this is funny. And he
- 2:06:38Speaker 6: actually liked the movie, but he looks at the front
- 2:06:40Speaker 6: of it and it's got Donald Glover on there.
- 2:06:41Speaker 7: He goes, no, it's Danny Glover's son.
- 2:06:43Speaker 18: Yeah.
- 2:06:44Speaker 5: Just because he's black. And I was like, really?
- 2:06:47Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:06:48Speaker 6: Because I'm like, I've heard a lot about Donald Glover lately,
- 2:06:51Speaker 6: and I do not remember hearing that. So geek that
- 2:06:53Speaker 6: I am, I immediately went home and checked. He is
- 2:06:55Speaker 6: not Danny Glover's son at all.
- 2:06:57Speaker 5: You should have said, no, dude. It's Crispin Glover's son.
- 2:07:02Speaker 7: Yes.
- 2:07:02Speaker 4: Isn't he hilarious?
- 2:07:03Speaker 6: Well, they're brothers, you know. Crispin Glover is the half-brother
- 2:07:07Speaker 6: of Donald Glover.
- 2:07:08Speaker 5: Right.
- 2:07:09Speaker 6: And by another marriage, he's only the half-father of.
- 2:07:15Speaker 5: Danny Gould. So start telling people these things, people.
- 2:07:20Speaker 6: I really, I think we should, yeah, we should really
- 2:07:22Speaker 6: start spreading random celebrity rumors that make no real sense.
- 2:07:26Speaker 5: Just for fun.
- 2:07:26Speaker 4: Did you know, I went to Scarlett Johansson on some
- 2:07:29Speaker 4: talk shows. She has a turkey that she's had in
- 2:07:31Speaker 4: her freezer for many years, just like Misty.
- 2:07:34Speaker 5: She is trying to be like Misty.
- 2:07:35Speaker 4: She was like, I can't get rid of it. It's
- 2:07:36Speaker 4: like part of the family. I was like, oh my god,
- 2:07:38Speaker 4: I fucking know someone who has the same problem.
- 2:07:40Speaker 7: She actually said that?
- 2:07:41Speaker 20: Yeah.
- 2:07:42Speaker 7: Oh my god, we need to get footage of this.
- 2:07:44Speaker 6: We need to YouTube and find this because, yeah, this
- 2:07:47Speaker 6: is an actual story.
- 2:07:48Speaker 9: I think it was David Letterman.
- 2:07:49Speaker 6: Because I carried that turkey around in my freezer for
- 2:07:53Speaker 6: like 10 years.
- 2:07:54Speaker 8: What?
- 2:07:54Speaker 6: That turkey is also part of my family at this point.
- 2:07:57Speaker 5: She has a turkey she will get rid of? Like
- 2:08:00Speaker 5: a store-bought turkey?
- 2:08:02Speaker 6: Yeah, it's almost 15 years old now. It was a
- 2:08:05Speaker 6: gifted turkey where she worked that first year. I think
- 2:08:08Speaker 6: she started working there for Thanksgiving. And then it didn't
- 2:08:12Speaker 6: get cooked that year. And then it was in there
- 2:08:14Speaker 6: so long that it became sort of a joke. And
- 2:08:17Speaker 6: then it stayed there for years.
- 2:08:18Speaker 5: And once it's a joke, you can't get rid of it.
- 2:08:20Speaker 5: We can't get rid of it.
- 2:08:22Speaker 6: And, well, once we gave it a name, it was
- 2:08:24Speaker 6: so funny we gave it a name, that once you
- 2:08:26Speaker 6: give something a name, you can't eat it, and then
- 2:08:29Speaker 6: you can't get rid of it.
- 2:08:30Speaker 5: It's part of your family at that point. You have
- 2:08:32Speaker 5: a pet frozen turkey.
- 2:08:33Speaker 6: So, yeah, and then she moved and didn't have a
- 2:08:35Speaker 6: place to put it, so I had it in my
- 2:08:36Speaker 6: freezer for like eight or ten years.
- 2:08:40Speaker 12: Wow.
- 2:08:41Speaker 5: And I was pretty attached to him, too. And then
- 2:08:44Speaker 5: when she moved. That's a lot of space taken up
- 2:08:46Speaker 5: by a turkey house.
- 2:08:46Speaker 1: It is.
- 2:08:47Speaker 6: Luckily, I don't have money for real food. So I don't,
- 2:08:49Speaker 6: you know, ice cubes and ice cream. That's really all
- 2:08:51Speaker 6: that's in my freezer aside from Harold. So then when
- 2:08:54Speaker 6: she moved, she actually had room. So now it's at
- 2:08:57Speaker 6: their house. And he has a, from what I hear,
- 2:08:59Speaker 6: he has a friend that's a burrito that's been in
- 2:09:01Speaker 6: there for about two years now.
- 2:09:03Speaker 5: You know, you could get Jeff Dunham to do a
- 2:09:06Speaker 5: skit on that.
- 2:09:07Speaker 6: You know, I'm sure you could. We forgot to bring
- 2:09:10Speaker 6: that up. Would you like to go into the Jeff
- 2:09:11Speaker 6: Dunham angle?
- 2:09:12Speaker 7: Well, yeah.
- 2:09:13Speaker 5: As we were leaving.
- 2:09:15Speaker 5: While we were still there, actually. While we were still there, yeah.
- 2:09:17Speaker 5: Jeff Dunham, his show started right after the convention was over.
- 2:09:23Speaker 6: Lexington is the cutting edge of the world, people. They
- 2:09:25Speaker 6: had not only a horror convention, but Jeff Dunham the
- 2:09:28Speaker 6: same night.
- 2:09:29Speaker 5: The same night, yeah.
- 2:09:29Speaker 7: Holy shit.
- 2:09:31Speaker 5: I think it would be neat to have to kind
- 2:09:33Speaker 5: of like parlay the paranormal in with uh puppetry and
- 2:09:37Speaker 5: we could have some kind of like paranormal talking or
- 2:09:42Speaker 5: something like that that would be pretty cool but uh
- 2:09:45Speaker 5: i wanted to walk up to jeff dunham and ask
- 2:09:47Speaker 5: him if he could you know shove his hand up
- 2:09:50Speaker 5: one of our asses and see if we could talk.
- 2:09:52Speaker 6: And i told you if he did that you're gonna
- 2:09:53Speaker 6: start talking you may not do a funny bit but
- 2:09:56Speaker 6: you're gonna say you're gonna.
- 2:09:57Speaker 5: Say something he uh he he was there um Walking
- 2:10:01Speaker 5: around the convention. Jeff Dunham walked right past us. And
- 2:10:04Speaker 5: all the other people had no idea who he was.
- 2:10:06Speaker 6: Yeah, we probably wouldn't have recognized him had we not
- 2:10:09Speaker 6: just been looking at a poster of him like five
- 2:10:11Speaker 6: minutes before when we were at the food court.
- 2:10:13Speaker 13: Right.
- 2:10:15Speaker 5: We were just commenting on, see, he could be old.
- 2:10:17Speaker 7: Look at him.
- 2:10:18Speaker 5: Look at his face. And then he walked right past us.
- 2:10:21Speaker 5: And he actually looked younger than in the photo. Yeah,
- 2:10:24Speaker 5: he did. That guy's freaky. He's undead. That's why he
- 2:10:27Speaker 5: was there.
- 2:10:28Speaker 16: Right.
- 2:10:28Speaker 5: He is the undead. That's why he can also be
- 2:10:31Speaker 5: such a good ventriloquist.
- 2:10:33Speaker 7: Oh, yeah. Because he's evil.
- 2:10:35Speaker 5: Because he's evil. Pure evil.
- 2:10:37Speaker 7: He's not a ventriloquist.
- 2:10:39Speaker 5: He really actually has reanimated those dolls.
- 2:10:42Speaker 6: Those are little evil minions of his that actually don't
- 2:10:46Speaker 6: go in the case at night. They actually hop around
- 2:10:48Speaker 6: and attack people.
- 2:10:49Speaker 5: Like Chucky.
- 2:10:50Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 2:10:50Speaker 5: It's scary. That was the horror of the weekend. Jeff Dunham.
- 2:10:54Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 2:10:56Speaker 7: Especially the hordes of people that were in line when
- 2:10:58Speaker 7: we left.
- 2:10:59Speaker 6: It was lines like.
- 2:11:01Speaker 5: He was a fucking rock star. Yeah, rock star.
- 2:11:04Speaker 4: Scary.
- 2:11:05Speaker 5: Like the... What's the redneck comedy tour?
- 2:11:08Speaker 23: Oh, God.
- 2:11:09Speaker 5: Blue collar comedy tour? Like they were showing up or something.
- 2:11:12Speaker 7: Yikes.
- 2:11:12Speaker 6: And I'm afraid it's the same audience.
- 2:11:14Speaker 21: At this point.
- 2:11:15Speaker 5: If it's in Lexington, Kentucky, it's the same audience. It's
- 2:11:17Speaker 5: the same audience. Man, that guy with the povich coming.
- 2:11:20Speaker 14: Yes.
- 2:11:21Speaker 5: All right. He does like a Muslim voice. And he
- 2:11:25Speaker 5: does a redneck voice. And he's got an old man.
- 2:11:28Speaker 5: It's funny.
- 2:11:29Speaker 7: That there's comedy.
- 2:11:31Speaker 5: And I think he's got a high opinion. On a stick.
- 2:11:37Speaker 11: Oh, God.
- 2:11:37Speaker 6: All right, let's get away from Jeff Dunham.
- 2:11:39Speaker 7: Okay.
- 2:11:40Speaker 1: Move on to.
- 2:11:42Speaker 5: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Jeff Dunham podcast. We
- 2:11:46Speaker 5: followed Jeff Dunham.
- 2:11:47Speaker 13: Around in cars.
- 2:11:49Speaker 7: Dunham cast.
- 2:11:50Speaker 5: New podcast.
- 2:11:51Speaker 7: Welcome to Dunham cast. This week we're going to interview
- 2:11:54Speaker 7: the old man.
- 2:11:57Speaker 5: God.
- 2:11:59Speaker 7: All right.
- 2:12:00Speaker 5: Let's get back to something that will piss more people off. Okay.
- 2:12:04Speaker 5: The remake of Escape from New York.
- 2:12:07Speaker 8: Why?
- 2:12:08Speaker 6: Well, we brought this up a long time ago, I remember.
- 2:12:11Speaker 6: We brought up the fact that they were going to make...
- 2:12:13Speaker 6: They were going to do some sort of... It was
- 2:12:15Speaker 6: still questionable whether it was just a reboot and they
- 2:12:18Speaker 6: were continuing on with the story or it was a
- 2:12:20Speaker 6: remake telling that same story.
- 2:12:23Speaker 5: It's still sort of questionable at this point.
- 2:12:25Speaker 13: But.
- 2:12:26Speaker 6: Yeah, they want to do some version and bring back
- 2:12:29Speaker 6: Snake Plissken. So, the latest person to hypothetically wear the eyepatch,
- 2:12:34Speaker 6: and I'm using that, this is still total buzz, as
- 2:12:37Speaker 6: the title would suggest, so here we go.
- 2:12:40Speaker 7: The next person to have in mind is Jeremy Renner,
- 2:12:44Speaker 7: star of the Hurt Locker.
- 2:12:46Speaker 5: The more I thought about it, I was like, not bad, actually.
- 2:12:49Speaker 5: So do they just keep throwing out ideas until somebody says,
- 2:12:53Speaker 5: not bad.
- 2:12:54Speaker 7: Until somebody's done bitching about it.
- 2:12:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 2:12:56Speaker 6: You know, the first wave was like, about Keanu.
- 2:12:59Speaker 5: Ah, fuck, no.
- 2:13:00Speaker 6: You know, so until they get somebody to go, eh,
- 2:13:04Speaker 6: I still don't like that you're doing it, but all right,
- 2:13:07Speaker 6: he's not horrible casting. Maybe that's the best you get
- 2:13:11Speaker 6: on something like this.
- 2:13:12Speaker 5: I suppose. I mean, yeah, okay. I guess if you're
- 2:13:17Speaker 5: going to do it, go ahead.
- 2:13:20Speaker 6: It's, yeah, again, it's still up in the air. It
- 2:13:22Speaker 6: says it is in very early talks to take on
- 2:13:24Speaker 6: the role, now made famous by former Disney star, Kurt Russell.
- 2:13:28Speaker 14: Kurt Russell.
- 2:13:29Speaker 5: So, yeah, I don't know. I don't know. The New
- 2:13:31Speaker 5: Line remake is.
- 2:13:32Speaker 6: Being directed by Brett Eisner, who actually did The Crazies,
- 2:13:35Speaker 6: which we brought up earlier as being.
- 2:13:37Speaker 7: Actually a pretty decent movie.
- 2:13:39Speaker 15: It's all right.
- 2:13:40Speaker 6: I think, yeah, I think those are at least somewhat
- 2:13:42Speaker 6: competent hands to put it into. Again, I worry more
- 2:13:46Speaker 6: what they're doing with it, because they're saying the... The
- 2:13:49Speaker 6: most recent script comes from Alan Loeb, who did Wall
- 2:13:52Speaker 6: Street 2, Money Never Sleeps, which I heard that was
- 2:13:55Speaker 6: the biggest downfall of that movie is the screenplay itself.
- 2:13:58Speaker 8: Wow.
- 2:13:59Speaker 6: I've heard the performances aren't so bad, but the story
- 2:14:02Speaker 6: is kind of a big mess.
- 2:14:04Speaker 5: So that worries me more than anything.
- 2:14:06Speaker 6: And it is being described as a Plissken origin story
- 2:14:09Speaker 6: merged with the events of Carpenter's 1981 original. That I'm
- 2:14:13Speaker 6: not so sure I'm comfortable with either.
- 2:14:15Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 2:14:15Speaker 6: I'm like, then we're entering into that Halloween remake territory.
- 2:14:18Speaker 5: It's like, why... So then you.
- 2:14:20Speaker 6: Get a backstory at the beginning, but then the second
- 2:14:22Speaker 6: half of the movie, you're like, oh, here's a rushed
- 2:14:23Speaker 6: version of what I've already seen.
- 2:14:25Speaker 5: Right. Let's tear apart the whole... Yeah. What's the point?
- 2:14:28Speaker 6: I mean, I would almost be more okay with them
- 2:14:30Speaker 6: just doing an origin story or some sort of prequel
- 2:14:33Speaker 6: idea of just like, let's do a younger version of
- 2:14:35Speaker 6: Plissken and see how he got to be this way
- 2:14:37Speaker 6: or how he got to be such a badass or.
- 2:14:40Speaker 7: No, not at all.
- 2:14:58Speaker 5: No but if they can sell it they'll do it.
- 2:15:01Speaker 6: I get I mean the only thing I can think
- 2:15:02Speaker 6: is that was a pretty modest budget on that movie
- 2:15:06Speaker 6: there weren't a lot of special effects really so I
- 2:15:08Speaker 6: mean if they really want to go super special effects
- 2:15:11Speaker 6: and do some sort of real futuristic version of the
- 2:15:15Speaker 6: 80s if I remember when it was set or was
- 2:15:18Speaker 6: it 91 I can't remember I think like yeah the
- 2:15:22Speaker 6: cutting cutting edge of technology.
- 2:15:24Speaker 5: 91 1991 I don't know it.
- 2:15:28Speaker 6: Again, if they want to do some weird alternate version
- 2:15:30Speaker 6: of the future that they didn't do and couldn't do back,
- 2:15:34Speaker 6: you know, when they made the original movie, that's the
- 2:15:37Speaker 6: only thing I can see them trying to do differently.
- 2:15:39Speaker 4: Right.
- 2:15:39Speaker 5: But again, why?
- 2:15:41Speaker 6: I mean, as many people like the way the old
- 2:15:44Speaker 6: one is, why do you want to change it? The
- 2:15:46Speaker 6: one thing that worked in that movie, you know.
- 2:15:48Speaker 5: Why do you want to mess with it? I'd be
- 2:15:50Speaker 5: fine with the backstory. That's not a problem. See, I
- 2:15:52Speaker 5: think I'd be okay with that.
- 2:15:54Speaker 6: Because he is such an awesome character and Kurt's getting
- 2:15:57Speaker 6: to the point he's not gonna do it anymore I
- 2:15:59Speaker 6: mean I would again we brought this up before I
- 2:16:01Speaker 6: would be interested in seeing like a third one with
- 2:16:04Speaker 6: him as a grizzled old snake Plissken it's like that
- 2:16:07Speaker 6: would be cool too but maybe Kurt's getting too old
- 2:16:10Speaker 6: maybe he doesn't want to do that kind of stuff
- 2:16:11Speaker 6: anymore so I would hate to never do another Plissken
- 2:16:15Speaker 6: movie he's a cool character I would like to see
- 2:16:17Speaker 6: something else with him just do it separate you.
- 2:16:19Speaker 7: Know do a whole completely.
- 2:16:21Speaker 6: Different story and I don't know that seems like it
- 2:16:24Speaker 6: would make more sense to me but What do we know?
- 2:16:28Speaker 12: Right.
- 2:16:29Speaker 5: Nothing.
- 2:16:31Speaker 6: Oh, man. They do say, and that one has nothing
- 2:16:33Speaker 6: to do with Carpenter, they did also say this week
- 2:16:35Speaker 6: that John Carpenter has announced he will be directing Dark Child,
- 2:16:39Speaker 6: the adaptation of the bad girl mid-90s Maxim Press comic book.
- 2:16:44Speaker 7: I kind of remember that. I remember the title.
- 2:16:46Speaker 6: I don't think I ever read it, but about a
- 2:16:48Speaker 6: teenage girl with the ability to turn into the monsters
- 2:16:51Speaker 6: of her nightmares. So... Hmm.
- 2:16:54Speaker 12: I don't know.
- 2:16:55Speaker 7: Again, I'm glad to see Carpenter doing stuff at this point.
- 2:16:58Speaker 5: It's been such a.
- 2:16:59Speaker 6: Lapse there, and the stuff that he's already done hasn't
- 2:17:01Speaker 6: even made it out yet, so it's been so long
- 2:17:03Speaker 6: since we've seen.
- 2:17:04Speaker 7: A full feature from him, let alone one people actually liked.
- 2:17:09Speaker 5: Well, yeah, there you go.
- 2:17:10Speaker 6: So, yeah, I would like to see him come back
- 2:17:12Speaker 6: and find good properties. This one, I can see why
- 2:17:15Speaker 6: he would like it, but I actually also read that
- 2:17:18Speaker 6: the Writing was, again, the weak point of that. The
- 2:17:21Speaker 6: artwork was kind of okay in that book, but the
- 2:17:22Speaker 6: story was pretty mediocre. So hopefully he'll get somebody else
- 2:17:26Speaker 6: to rewrite it, or he'll do a rewrite on it
- 2:17:29Speaker 6: and give it a better, more solid plot.
- 2:17:32Speaker 5: I would trust him with a rewrite of most things.
- 2:17:35Speaker 5: I think he has a pretty good idea. When it's
- 2:17:37Speaker 5: his idea, he can do a pretty good job with it.
- 2:17:41Speaker 5: I think so. And you never know. He could have
- 2:17:43Speaker 5: been spending years getting this ready. you know and maybe
- 2:17:47Speaker 5: he's wanted to do it and needed a a a
- 2:17:51Speaker 5: property and it might you know he may have developed
- 2:17:53Speaker 5: an entire storyline already so.
- 2:17:56Speaker 6: Which yeah that i mean again i i would rather
- 2:17:59Speaker 6: him almost just take the basic idea of that and
- 2:18:02Speaker 6: totally come up with because it I mean, the old
- 2:18:05Speaker 6: John Carpenter was an amazing storyteller.
- 2:18:08Speaker 13: Right.
- 2:18:08Speaker 6: He really knew how to piece a plot together and
- 2:18:10Speaker 6: how to pace it and.
- 2:18:11Speaker 5: How to, you know, build in.
- 2:18:12Speaker 6: You know, if you have monsters and stuff like that,
- 2:18:15Speaker 6: I can see him being able to work that in
- 2:18:16Speaker 6: right and not just use it cheesily. So, you know, again,
- 2:18:20Speaker 6: I would almost rather see him totally take over the
- 2:18:23Speaker 6: project and run it.
- 2:18:24Speaker 5: As his own.
- 2:18:25Speaker 6: So hopefully that's what happens and they don't just pass
- 2:18:28Speaker 6: it off to another hacky screenwriter.
- 2:18:30Speaker 5: Well, yeah, he can actually take something... I believe very,
- 2:18:34Speaker 5: that's very simple. Um, doesn't need a intricate plot by
- 2:18:40Speaker 5: any means and make it a full length movie. Anyway,
- 2:18:46Speaker 5: I think he's, he's got that ability that I think he,
- 2:18:49Speaker 5: I think he can just make a tense moment and
- 2:18:53Speaker 5: actually bring stretch out tense moments, pace them correctly and,
- 2:18:58Speaker 5: and fill an entire movie with something that's just a
- 2:19:00Speaker 5: basic plot anyway. So I'm not too concerned about that.
- 2:19:04Speaker 5: He could give you the basic backstory of the character,
- 2:19:07Speaker 5: and then here you go, just wind it up and
- 2:19:10Speaker 5: let it go. And I think he can handle it
- 2:19:12Speaker 5: pretty well. So I'm not saying that by any means
- 2:19:16Speaker 5: it would write itself, but I think he can handle it.
- 2:19:18Speaker 5: He can easily handle that. Definitely.
- 2:19:20Speaker 6: And I would like to see him do it. So
- 2:19:22Speaker 6: hopefully that's where it goes with it. And that pretty
- 2:19:25Speaker 6: much rounds out.
- 2:19:25Speaker 5: Scarlett Johansson. With Scarlett Johansson and Leonardo DiCaprio.
- 2:19:29Speaker 17: There you go.
- 2:19:31Speaker 5: Only if it's a period piece. If it's a period
- 2:19:32Speaker 5: piece with a low-cut shirt.
- 2:19:35Speaker 6: Some sort of special bustier built in.
- 2:19:37Speaker 7: That's, yeah.
- 2:19:38Speaker 6: This is what we're looking for for a green light.
- 2:19:42Speaker 6: That's what gets a movie made these days. Leonardo DiCaprio
- 2:19:44Speaker 6: and Scarlett Johansson's boobs.
- 2:19:46Speaker 1: Right.
- 2:19:47Speaker 5: That's an Oscar winner there.
- 2:19:48Speaker 7: Yeah, that's... Phew, and a period piece.
- 2:19:51Speaker 5: Get Kenny Loggins to write the... Sound tracking, you got gold, baby.
- 2:19:57Speaker 5: Highway to the dark, child. Watch out. Come on. You know,
- 2:20:04Speaker 5: why do people always get so surprised that two miles out.
- 2:20:08Speaker 7: Merging happens?
- 2:20:09Speaker 5: It merges. One mile out, it merges. A thousand feet,
- 2:20:12Speaker 5: it merges, and yet you're still not there.
- 2:20:16Speaker 6: Oh, well, as we avoid the accident, that pretty much
- 2:20:18Speaker 6: wraps up the buzz this week. So I guess the
- 2:20:21Speaker 6: only other thing to do is... Okay, kids, get out
- 2:20:24Speaker 6: your decoder pins.
- 2:20:26Speaker 5: Dun, dun, dun. There we go. Somebody did it.
- 2:20:29Speaker 7: It's time for the Movie Meltdown Secret Circle reveal of
- 2:20:31Speaker 7: next week's feature.
- 2:20:32Speaker 1: For you members of the Secret Circle.
- 2:20:34Speaker 6: This week we skipped it because we had some technical
- 2:20:37Speaker 6: issues and some miscommunications along the way.
- 2:20:40Speaker 1: But, um.
- 2:20:42Speaker 7: Next week will be interesting because, um.
- 2:20:45Speaker 6: Next week, we're going to have a special guest sit
- 2:20:48Speaker 6: in with us for the movie discussion. And on top
- 2:20:51Speaker 6: of that, I've let them pick the movie, and they've
- 2:20:53Speaker 6: picked a movie that I think is going to be
- 2:20:55Speaker 6: pretty damn interesting, especially given where we'll be and the
- 2:20:59Speaker 6: crew that we'll be discussing it with, especially if one
- 2:21:02Speaker 6: of our crew is involved. Next week's movie is going
- 2:21:05Speaker 6: to be When Harry Met Sally.
- 2:21:08Speaker 5: Oh, wow.
- 2:21:09Speaker 15: Yes.
- 2:21:11Speaker 17: What? Yes.
- 2:21:12Speaker 4: Oh, wow.
- 2:21:13Speaker 13: Okay.
- 2:21:15Speaker 7: This should be interesting.
- 2:21:18Speaker 6: So, yeah, I'm even going to keep it under wraps
- 2:21:21Speaker 6: on the special guest, and I'm just going to give
- 2:21:24Speaker 6: you a heads up now on the movie. I think
- 2:21:27Speaker 6: it's going to be pretty damn interesting. So, yeah, this
- 2:21:30Speaker 6: should be fun, especially if Misty's involved.
- 2:21:33Speaker 5: What's next, Sleepless in Seattle?
- 2:21:35Speaker 6: Hopefully, because that one's awesome, too. I like these movies.
- 2:21:38Speaker 6: I don't know what you're talking about. So, yeah, that
- 2:21:42Speaker 6: should be interesting next week. And it will once again
- 2:21:45Speaker 6: be a road trip episode. So, yeah, prepare yourselves. It's
- 2:21:49Speaker 6: going to be hopefully several special guests sitting in next week.
- 2:21:53Speaker 6: So this should be an interesting show coming up. So
- 2:21:57Speaker 6: strap yourself in.
- 2:21:58Speaker 8: Wow.
- 2:22:00Speaker 7: Oh, with that, I don't know, music-wise, I think we
- 2:22:02Speaker 7: should go out with a song from David Johansson.
- 2:22:05Speaker 5: Did you know he was Scarlett Johansson's dad? I don't
- 2:22:08Speaker 5: know if you've heard that. Yeah, I did. She changed
- 2:22:10Speaker 5: her spelling of her last name, but yeah.
- 2:22:14Speaker 6: Because she didn't want that to be her foot in
- 2:22:16Speaker 6: the door. She wanted to earn her way into the
- 2:22:19Speaker 6: A-list with her boobs.
- 2:22:25Speaker 5: And her singing ability. Well, her phenomenal singing voice.
- 2:22:29Speaker 7: Come on now.
- 2:22:31Speaker 5: Otherwise, that about does it.
- 2:22:32Speaker 7: We won't turn next week.
- 2:22:33Speaker 5: Same gig time, same gig feed.
- 2:22:35Speaker 7: Thanks for listening.
- 2:22:37Speaker 8: Bye.
- 2:22:39Speaker 5: My lady's asleep. Never mind.
- 2:22:54Speaker 18: I love her a real whole bunch. She does what
- 2:22:57Speaker 18: they're gonna leave her under the table. That's when I
- 2:23:00Speaker 18: decided to play my hunch. And when I try to
- 2:23:04Speaker 18: tend to kiss her lips, she hollers, look down and
- 2:23:07Speaker 18: say to breathe, don't touch.
- 2:23:09Speaker 15: She says, I'm done with you, daddy.
- 2:23:20Speaker 14: But compared to what she had to do last year
- 2:23:23Speaker 14: To all the times she shed a tear I'll hurry,
- 2:23:31Speaker 14: that's alright Yes, don't even have a fight Because there's
- 2:23:36Speaker 14: nothing on the TV tonight So it's alright.
- 2:23:43Speaker 18: Well, every time that I see her now, I said it,
- 2:23:46Speaker 18: my cold heart starts to thud.
- 2:23:50Speaker 15: I can't believe that I let my.
- 2:23:52Speaker 18: Own heart fall in on such a push. Well, all
- 2:23:57Speaker 18: I do is I think about her. She says, I'm sorry, Daddy,
- 2:24:08Speaker 18: I don't get that much. She says, I'm in love with.
- 2:24:12Speaker 20: You, Daddy, but not that much.
- 2:24:14Speaker 12: Oh, yeah.
- 2:24:15Speaker 18: She's not prepared to share her love as such.
- 2:24:20Speaker 15: But compared to what.
- 2:24:23Speaker 20: She had to do last year.
- 2:24:26Speaker 15: To all the times she.
- 2:24:27Speaker 20: Shed a tear. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But every time.
- 2:24:45Speaker 18: That I take her home, she insists.
- 2:24:47Speaker 15: Oh, daddy, we go home Dutch. I said, I have
- 2:24:51Speaker 15: something else in mind, more like activities and fun at home.
- 2:24:55Speaker 15: She's in love.
- 2:24:56Speaker 20: With you, daddy, but not that much. Oh, yeah.
- 2:25:02Speaker 18: She's not prepared to share her love as such. Now
- 2:25:16Speaker 18: you're going to.
- 2:25:26Speaker 17: Have to excuse me. I have to get to my tape.
