- 0:00Welcome to the Doctor Turned Health Coach Podcast. My name is Dr. Ashuri.
- 0:05I'm a family medicine physician turned health coach. And today,
- 0:09we're going to talk about fiber.
- 0:11Well, you've probably heard already way too much about fiber.
- 0:16And yet again, I think it's incredibly valuable to talk about the importance
- 0:21of fiber and what it's going to do for your health in so many different aspects
- 0:26that you may not even know about.
- 0:28So let's start with what we know about fiber.
- 0:32Fiber helps slow down the movement of food through the intestine.
- 0:38It makes sure that you actually absorb more nutrients rather than more calories,
- 0:44so it lowers the calorie absorption.
- 0:47Fiber is also necessary to feed all of the many different gut bacteria you have,
- 0:53which are essential for vitamin production, vitamin synthesis,
- 0:57oxidation, decreasing inflammation.
- 1:04Neurotransmitters that help you feel less depressed, less anxious, help you with sleep.
- 1:10All of these things are essential and they're done by the gut bacteria.
- 1:14If they're not getting enough fiber they're not
- 1:18going to thrive and on the other hand if
- 1:20they're getting too much sugar then the bacteria you
- 1:23don't want to thrive will thrive and they will out compete your good bacteria
- 1:27so fiber is absolutely essential and though i know that there's a lot of debate
- 1:33online there's people out there saying fiber is actually not that big of a deal
- 1:37we're getting too much fiber and all of these things it may be true that.
- 1:41For a certain individual, but for the average person, and certainly most of
- 1:45the patients I've taken care of, they have had a major lack of fiber in their diet.
- 1:51Fiber also helps satiate you. You actually feel more full. You feel full longer with fiber.
- 1:59You can also feel more full with protein. The downside with protein is that
- 2:04it also comes with a lot of calories.
- 2:06For people who try to satiate themselves with protein, they end up having to eat a lot less,
- 2:13and that can be a little bit unpleasant to go hungry for that part of the meal,
- 2:20even though you might feel fuller later.
- 2:23Those are some of the downsides with doing it with protein.
- 2:26Fiber comes from all of the different fruits and vegetables,
- 2:32nuts and seeds, beans, right?
- 2:35Those are the main sources of fiber. When you have white rice,
- 2:40you're not getting any fiber.
- 2:42When you have white bread, you're not getting any fiber.
- 2:45When you have milk, you're not getting any fiber. When you have chicken breast,
- 2:50when you have beef, steak, sausage, eggs, that's not a source of fiber.
- 2:56In order for your plate to have a lot of fiber, we must include fiber some way, somehow.
- 3:02One of the things I do with my health coaching clients is I rarely have them cut out any food.
- 3:08What I do ask them of is that they introduce the important things in the food,
- 3:13meaning here's the plate that you've always created.
- 3:16The way we're going to redesign this plate is add a bunch of fiber to it.
- 3:20The ratio of fiber to bland calories, to simple calories, has to be high enough
- 3:27that you actually get the benefits of fiber for your overall health.
- 3:32If, for example, somebody's having two boiled eggs for breakfast,
- 3:37it's necessary to add in some vegetables.
- 3:41Some 100% whole grain bread, in order for that to become a nutritious meal.
- 3:48That is why oftentimes oatmeal can be
- 3:51a better option now of course we can take oatmeal
- 3:54and we have all the fiber and then we can
- 3:57sort of delete some of the fiber effects by
- 4:00adding in a ton of sugar but it takes a
- 4:03lot of sugar to really cause problems so one
- 4:06of the best steps you can take today is to figure
- 4:09out how can you squeeze in a little
- 4:13bit more fiber into your diet how you can
- 4:15how can you sneak in a little
- 4:18bit more fiber so if you got a club sandwich
- 4:22and it's got a tiny slice of tomato tiny little
- 4:25bit of lettuce a huge chunk of turkey huge blt or something and it's got a ton
- 4:31of mayo and white bread could you substitute the bread for whole wheat bread
- 4:35could you add in a lot more veggies
- 4:38four more tomatoes bunch more lettuce could you cut back on the mayo?
- 4:43Could you cut back on the turkey a little bit in size to shift the ratio to more fiber?
- 4:49What you'll notice over time is that you can suddenly eat more food,
- 4:54you can have larger plates, you can eat and feel more satiated.
- 4:59In return, you'll also lose weight.
- 5:02Your body composition will become healthier and better.
- 5:06One of the big advantages of fiber is that you can have it in very large amounts,
- 5:13and it's very rare for that to cause any kind of metabolic issues or problems
- 5:18with your body composition.
- 5:20So I hope I gave you a bit of a primer on fiber, and of course in one of our
- 5:24deep dive topics, I'll come back to it and I'll address it in more detail.
