- 0:00Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Three O Take where we talk
- 0:04all things Major League Baseball.
- 0:06Here's Kyle Corwin and Nate Reyes.
- 0:10It all starts right now. Welcome back to the Three O Tech
- 0:16presented by C Geek. This is Episode 4 O3.
- 0:19I'll be your host, Kyle Corden. I'm here with my Co host, Nate
- 0:22Reyes. Nate.
- 0:27How to do? How to do all?
- 0:32Right. Here's the deal.
- 0:34Let's just, yeah, let's just clear the air on let's.
- 0:37Just clear the air, OK? Situation.
- 0:39It is 9 O 5:00 PM Eastern. I am looking right now at add a
- 0:49tweet from Bob Nightingale from 2:17 PM that says optimism.
- 0:59The trade meaning the one soda trade will now be completed this
- 1:03afternoon and I'm just going to go ahead and repeat myself.
- 1:08It is 9 O. 6. PM Eastern and we still don't
- 1:15have an official word on whether or not this has been completed.
- 1:20Oh, I know it hasn't been completed.
- 1:21We have yet to receive official word that it's actually gone
- 1:24through because I think as of right now what's holding it up
- 1:26is last we heard was medical, they're reviewing the medicals.
- 1:33But as it stands right now, the plan had this thing gone through
- 1:37this afternoon, this was going to be a full blown headlining
- 1:40Juan Soto deal at this very moment.
- 1:45We can't say for certain that he is a Yankee.
- 1:48And Nate, you said, well, we'll just, and I kind of agree with
- 1:54you like we're just going to have to act as though he's a
- 1:57Yankee. But a little bit of hesitancy
- 2:01came in and I'm like we've been, we've been burned by this
- 2:03before. We had Carlos Correa as a Met.
- 2:07We had Carlos Correa as a. What was the other one?
- 2:13A. Scherzer.
- 2:16Scherzer as a Padre and that was it through last minute.
- 2:21Yeah. So it's possible by the time
- 2:25you're hearing this he assigned or he's been traded and we're
- 2:30going to go about this as if he's been traded because we have
- 2:34the, the, I would say the final package available to us that's
- 2:44been made public. Yeah.
- 2:46So we can we can kind of talk about it that way given that the
- 2:51that's been made public. But we're still waiting to hear
- 2:53on the medicals. But all that to say no official
- 2:56word yet, but we're going to, we're going to do an episode
- 3:00because we we owe you guys a weekly episode.
- 3:02So here we are. Yeah, can't wait on the
- 3:05business, the business side of things.
- 3:09So just got to do what you got to do and it's been plus I have
- 3:14a Christmas party tomorrow so. Yeah.
- 3:16Can't. Can't do it then.
- 3:18It's been quite a day for us. Quite an evening rather.
- 3:23We knocked out a change up for you guys.
- 3:25It'll be it'll be. I think we.
- 3:27I don't we don't need to keep it secret it's going to be it's
- 3:29going to be on on flying. The experience of flying.
- 3:33I'm sure a lot of you will part one night with you.
- 3:36Part one, Yeah, we. Think it's going to have to be a
- 3:38Part 1. So we knocked that out and then
- 3:40in between there we did an interview.
- 3:47Yeah, I think that's maybe, I think I maybe have alluded to
- 3:49it, but for those who are a little out of the loop, I'll
- 3:52keep it, keep it a little bit of surprise.
- 3:53We got it. We got a good one coming up for
- 3:55you guys and now we're here. So my friend, assuming Juan Soto
- 4:03gets traded and is a Yankee, what I mean, what are we
- 4:11thinking here as a as a resident Yankee fan?
- 4:13What are you thinking? It's hard for this to register
- 4:16for me, to be honest. Like, I don't.
- 4:19I don't know. I it I it doesn't feel real.
- 4:25I'm super stoked. I think as a just like removing
- 4:31myself from bias as a baseball fan and like obviously as a
- 4:35Yankees fan, I'm watching. I would guess I watch probably
- 4:41140 to 145 games a year of the Yankees.
- 4:47I'm excited to be able to watch Soto play like I'm be able to
- 4:51watch him every at bat and like watch him.
- 4:55Truly I think I'm excited just as a baseball fan to like get an
- 4:59opportunity to do that. I I think it's like initial
- 5:08reaction it's it's stung, like the package is big and for those
- 5:14like unfamiliar with names like we'll dive in in a SEC.
- 5:17But it's they're they are really good names.
- 5:22Really good arms going back. I think the Yankees did have a
- 5:30plethora of of young pitching to be able to move, and it is
- 5:35refreshing to finally see Brian Cashman, like get this done.
- 5:40You know, 'cause it's like there's so many names have been
- 5:43dangled in front of us the last few years and it's been band
- 5:49aided. And then we get some weird
- 5:51cryptic saying that like, you know, it's never going to happen
- 5:56or we tried our best. It just didn't.
- 5:58Cards didn't go our way. Like this is a name.
- 6:01This is a superstar that needed to come in.
- 6:04The Yankees are are they need to go now.
- 6:10And as he as like quick in the scene as Aaron Judge has has
- 6:15entered you got to remember that he is.
- 6:18He's already 31 like he is already like it is now.
- 6:24Time is now. Garrett Cole is in that similar
- 6:27time frame. I know it's like there's some
- 6:31youth attached and you're waiting to see like what Volpi
- 6:34is and what Wells is and what Jason Dominguez is when he gets
- 6:37back. But like the the Cole, Judge,
- 6:41Stanton, Rizzo, that's all right now.
- 6:46Things need to happen right now. So Soto is a huge, huge piece.
- 6:55I think it's probably being slept on a little bit
- 6:58considering that he's coming off of a struggling Padre team and I
- 7:03think that there were. That's probably watering it down
- 7:05a little bit and I think he's going to remind some people,
- 7:08hopefully he reminds some people this year of he is a Hall of
- 7:12Famer when it's when it's going to be all said and done.
- 7:15So I'm excited. Yeah, the overrated conversation
- 7:21that seemingly just sits in a cloud over this kids head.
- 7:27It just blows my mind. It's weird.
- 7:30If you know even the slightest thing about baseball, you don't
- 7:35have to watch for very long to know that this kid is talented
- 7:39beyond your average player like this.
- 7:44He, like you said, if if he's able to consistently do what
- 7:50he's done up to this point, I I don't see how that doesn't
- 7:53result in into an entry into the Hall of Fame.
- 7:57And he's 25. If that is he, what do we even
- 8:03know 20? 425.
- 8:04I mean, what are we talking about here?
- 8:06But the, the the conversation about him just being a guy that
- 8:10walks all the time. Look, I'm not going to be the
- 8:13first guy to defend him with the advanced analytics because
- 8:18that's not really my game. But go, please pull those up if
- 8:23you like. There's a whole lot of red on
- 8:26there, a whole lot of red. So in in that sense, I think
- 8:33obviously the Yankees get much better in that regard.
- 8:37But look, I'm not. It's a lot more to do.
- 8:41Yeah, I'm not. Well, not even just with the
- 8:43team, but with him, I'm not. I'm not sweating this all that
- 8:46much because he's already made it clear that he's going to,
- 8:50he's going to free agency. And look, let's be honest,
- 8:56you've been down on this team for a number of years now in
- 9:01terms of their unwillingness to push the envelope a little bit
- 9:06if they have another year like they've had for the last however
- 9:11many seasons. And I'm not talking about the
- 9:13ALCS years. I'm just talking about generally
- 9:16not being able to get over the hump, right.
- 9:18If they have another year of that, that's going to be a hard
- 9:22sell to try. If, if they're if there's any
- 9:26intention or or plan to to offer this this guy a contract and
- 9:31extension, that's going to be a hard sell.
- 9:35Be like, well, you're kind of familiar with our game up to
- 9:37this point. We didn't really do much the
- 9:39year we had you to change your mind and now we're trying to
- 9:44offer you an extension. I don't think he's really going
- 9:46to go for that. So the way I see it, this is
- 9:50free agency regardless. Yeah, I mean, well he's a Boris
- 9:53client. Boris clients don't sign
- 9:57extensions. So you know, that's just it's
- 9:59not going to happen. They're they're of course going
- 10:01to hit free agency. He's of course going to hit free
- 10:03agency. I think this gives the Yankees a
- 10:06year to sell New York, to sell the organization, to sell the
- 10:11clubhouse, to sell teammates, to sell, you know, the fan base.
- 10:15Like it gives them a year for someone to, you know, buy in and
- 10:19say it. And he does seem like he's
- 10:23perfectly fine smack dab in the middle of spotlight.
- 10:27I don't think he's ever really like shield away from it.
- 10:31The I don't know if you want to call him antics or whatever.
- 10:36You know the shuffling carrying the bats of first base.
- 10:39The showmanship. Yeah I think, I think it's like
- 10:42he's, I think he's just fine doing that.
- 10:48Yeah it it's just going to come down to if the Yankees are are
- 10:51going to be there is some money there's some money coming off
- 10:53the books next year. So I think it's you know
- 10:57something to where it's going to have to be a double digit offer
- 11:02like as far as length it's going to have to be 10 years unless of
- 11:06course you know I can't see him doing something strange with
- 11:10like a four year deal and then go hit the market again at 3031.
- 11:15I don't know but I think that the Yanks have definitely have a
- 11:19little bit more work to do to to kind of flip the script.
- 11:22There's some definitely some still some holes to fill they're
- 11:26still in on Yamamoto but you know they're they're just need
- 11:31to do a little bit more. I'm I mean I I will say the no
- 11:35matter who's on the bump dealing with with Soto and judge
- 11:42back-to-back and I know like he's he was over in San Diego
- 11:45and I know like we can say that about Tatis.
- 11:47We can say that about Machado. But the level of you can't miss
- 11:56for back-to-back guys. We're talking 8 to 12 pitches
- 12:00that need to be perfect and you're going to need to paint
- 12:04and guys that will take their walks happily.
- 12:08It's it's going to be tough. It's going to be tough.
- 12:10I mean, just scooting everyone down a spot as well, pushing
- 12:15Stanton, pushing Rizzo down a spot where they probably belong
- 12:18at this point in their career. It's a big deal.
- 12:21It's a big deal. Well, I mean, that's assuming
- 12:25Stanton hasn't quit by Opening Day, dude.
- 12:28Seriously, freaking genius, I'm just throwing him out of the
- 12:30ball, supported. Come on, Cash, What are we
- 12:32doing? No, but you bring up a good
- 12:35point with with this again presumed acquisition and again
- 12:42I, before we go any further, I feel like I need to clarify
- 12:47hasn't happened yet. It's possible it happens
- 12:49tonight. It's possible it happens in the
- 12:50morning. If it doesn't happen at all take
- 12:55everything you're hearing and take over a grain of salt.
- 12:58I I don't know what to tell you. Like we we have we're we're
- 13:00doing our best here going off of what we know and we're going off
- 13:03what we assume is going to happen.
- 13:04But all I have to say again assuming that it does happen.
- 13:10I think you bring up a good point about selling the selling
- 13:13the city I think for the Yankees image the Yankees place in the
- 13:21league. I think this helps turn those
- 13:26wheels a little bit. Again, though, those wheels that
- 13:29have been rather dusty, I feel like for a while, because they
- 13:32don't. It's been years since they've
- 13:34been the feared Yankees, the Bronx Bombers that that they
- 13:41came to be known as. And if you can get a guy like
- 13:45Soto, you mentioned pairing him in the lineup with Judge, you
- 13:48get a maybe you go out and get Yamamoto.
- 13:52You're not. I mean you you still have holes
- 13:55up and down the, I won't say up and down the lineup but
- 13:57throughout the lineup to where you're not gonna be the elite of
- 14:02the elite across Major League Baseball.
- 14:03But I think it's a step in the right direction to towards
- 14:08restoring that image that I feel like has been lost for the
- 14:13Yankees. So a little.
- 14:15Attitude. A little attitude, which is
- 14:18good. Yeah, they got a year to do it
- 14:20because I I think, I mean there there's just so many factors at
- 14:26play here. If he gets there, doesn't like
- 14:29the, doesn't like the fit, doesn't like the culture, he
- 14:33doesn't play as well as he he thought he would in in that
- 14:37specific market. If any bad blood arises with, I
- 14:42mean honestly with Cashman, I I wouldn't put it past him to to
- 14:47lay lay the hammer down a little bit on Soto at some point with
- 14:50some sound bite this year. So a lot of play here, free
- 14:55agency looming. If you're the Yankees, you got
- 14:58to, you got to capitalize on this year and do something, and
- 15:01that's. Why you're They can't be done.
- 15:03They can't be done. It's still still couple more
- 15:06moves, but yeah, I from what I'm being like, from what I'm
- 15:12reading and from what I'm seeing, I think they're super
- 15:16comfortable with Judge being in center field.
- 15:18I would say more than half the games.
- 15:24I know that there's rumors that Trent Grisham is included in
- 15:27this deal, most likely being slotted as a fourth outfielder.
- 15:31We'll get into the Verdugo trade here in a SEC.
- 15:33But you know when you're talking working left to right, you got
- 15:38Soto, Judge and and Verdugo. It's a solid lineup.
- 15:42It's too, you know. And then obviously when Jason
- 15:46Dominguez is back from surgery and back healthy, you know,
- 15:51Judge can get a little bit more time in the corner on DH.
- 15:53So it's it's coming together. It's definitely coming together.
- 16:00Just need a little bit more. I'm stoked.
- 16:03I'm definitely stoked to just see a a truly superstar like
- 16:09next level superstar being here. This is different and this is
- 16:14something where like the yeah the Yankees have to go right now
- 16:18package back the the biggest sting for me is Michael King.
- 16:26Michael King really, really stings.
- 16:29He's included in that deal. Then you got Drew Thorpe 2022
- 16:35second round pick. Hye crept into AA this past
- 16:39season. I think he threw like over 130
- 16:42innings ERA sitting in the twos that he looks like he could be a
- 16:49front of the rotation guy eventually.
- 16:50I would say pot you're you might see him September call up 2024
- 16:55most likely a 2025 guy. Johnny Brito.
- 17:00We saw him kind of slot in to some spot starts throughout the
- 17:04year for the Yankees stuff. That stuff has looked pretty
- 17:07good. Randy Vasquez, I think is a top
- 17:1225 overall prospect, MLB prospect.
- 17:20He's the little slept on. I think in the deal maybe it's
- 17:25top 25 Yankee prospect, I'm not quite sure.
- 17:30And then Kyle Higashioka, you know, a little bit of a little
- 17:35bit of catching depth for the Padres.
- 17:37So it's a haul and and I think like if you're struggling in the
- 17:42pitching department, this is 1 move that you just quickly got
- 17:47restocked in for the Padres like you, you definitely restocked
- 17:51and the potential of what Michael King could be.
- 17:55I think everyone is familiar with him being a back end
- 17:57rotation or back end bullpen guy.
- 17:59He slotted in as a as a starter down the stretch last year and
- 18:04they really stretched him out and he looked really good.
- 18:08So I think the Padres have the freedom to do what they want
- 18:11with him. But when you're talking about
- 18:13like 4 guys that like have a lot of potential, even if only two
- 18:21of them pan out, I think they're going to be really, really good.
- 18:25So this stung, don't get me wrong, and any Yankee fan that
- 18:30just, you know, blows that off or shrugs that off, this stung.
- 18:36It had to sting, though. It had to sting this line up
- 18:39needed a power lefty and they hadn't had a left fielder in
- 18:42like 10 years. So it's about time.
- 18:47I I don't want to imagine what what Juan Soto in the Yankee
- 18:56Stadium is going to be like with that porch.
- 19:00I know. My goodness, yeah.
- 19:03And even then, like, he's totally fine going Apo Taco.
- 19:06It's not like left field's very far either, so it's going to be
- 19:11fun to see him. I think that's what it is, too.
- 19:13Like here, here's a year of playing in this stadium and
- 19:15watch what your numbers do. Watch what your numbers do with
- 19:18Judge behind you. So yeah, nothing against Tatis
- 19:28or Machado, but right now it's just judges, you know, probably
- 19:32a top three feared hitter in baseball.
- 19:34So hitting in front of him, I mean for.
- 19:37Protection. Yeah, we're going protection.
- 19:39Yeah, I'm taking judge every time.
- 19:42So, man, Well, I'm looking at a tweet right now from Andy
- 19:48Martino, which this guy, my goodness, he's like, I thought
- 19:53he's a. Met guy we're talking about.
- 19:56We're we. We threw out the idea, maybe
- 19:58bringing the bum list back. This guy is.
- 20:01Working his way. Up the top what?
- 20:03If this guy. Is all over the map.
- 20:05I'm making a tweet right now, it says.
- 20:07I'm hearing cautious optimism that issues can be worked out
- 20:10and Juan Soto to Yankees will proceed.
- 20:12A lot of work has gone into this from both sides.
- 20:15It was supposed to get done many hours ago, but it does not sound
- 20:20dead. Why are we even using the words
- 20:23sound dead talking about like we get so this is what I hate about
- 20:28these reporters. We get so antsy to try to be
- 20:32first to try to have the breaking news, which I can
- 20:35understand. But if we do it time and a time
- 20:39again to the point where we have to walk it back then every
- 20:44single time and especially with a a caliber of a player that
- 20:49we're dealing with in Juan Soto, if it happens here, who are we
- 20:55to really believe and why should we believe anything that's being
- 20:58said? This deal this afternoon seemed
- 21:01all but done and now now Amy Martino is out there trying to
- 21:06reassure people that the trades not dead.
- 21:09What are we doing? Stop trying to be first and
- 21:15instead just be right. That's all I ask.
- 21:18Quality over quantity. That's all we need.
- 21:23It's all we need. He wears #22, right?
- 21:35Yeah. Perfect.
- 21:40So we're good there. Let me.
- 21:41Guess Cashman's been saving 22 for the last decade.
- 21:47Yeah, it's just, I think if this turns out to be, if this turns
- 21:54out to be a trade, and it turns out to that he signs long term,
- 21:57this makes up for missing out on Bryce Harper.
- 22:00It really does. Because, like, I don't, I don't
- 22:02know how Bryce felt about it, but like it it felt like a slam
- 22:08dunk for years. It just, it felt like I remember
- 22:12joking about it years ago when Bryce Harper was first coming on
- 22:16the scene. I was like, I can't wait for him
- 22:17to be a Yankee because it's coming and it's just it fumble
- 22:21the bag. It's just this front office man.
- 22:23Just fumble the bag. So I'm.
- 22:26I don't know. I mean, I'm, I'm probably going
- 22:29to have my heart ripped out this time next year when he signs
- 22:32somewhere else. But here I am hoping again.
- 22:38See, that's the thing, though, You you can't look at it like
- 22:41that. Just look at it as a year, as a
- 22:44single season that you can enjoy watching like a few players play
- 22:49together, yeah. I hope I hear you.
- 22:51I mean that that hope, this. This is what Padres fans were
- 22:54told. Everyone heard this in
- 22:56Padresville and look how that look how that worked out.
- 23:01I could very much see this, the copy paste over on the Yankee
- 23:05side again next year. Hope not.
- 23:08But it wouldn't be crazy. I don't.
- 23:12Know we'll see one name that we do know is going that's going to
- 23:17New York. Alex Verdugo and I had.
- 23:21I had some people reaching out, being like how, man, can't wait
- 23:24to hear what Kyle has to say about this.
- 23:27Look, I'm just. Going to say right here, right
- 23:29now, and this may come as a shock to some people.
- 23:34Frankly, I couldn't care less about this trade.
- 23:37I didn't really care whether Alex Verdugo went to the Bronx.
- 23:43If he went to the Astros, I didn't care.
- 23:47Didn't matter, Alex, this is a classic case for me of thank you
- 23:54for your service. There were some UPS, there were
- 23:56some downs. But like, I mean you came over
- 24:03here as part of the Mookie trade which that's essentially if it
- 24:07if there's any question now or if there's any question that
- 24:10still remain, we can safely chalk that up as an L But yeah,
- 24:16like I I didn't necessarily fall in love with the guy.
- 24:18I think he he latched on to the the Boston culture pretty well
- 24:23when he got over here. Given that he was going to be he
- 24:26didn't stand a chance when he came over here because he was
- 24:29part of the Mookie trailer. He yeah.
- 24:31Nobody was going to give him a fair shake right knowing that so
- 24:35the way he embraced the the Boston culture and and all of
- 24:40that that came with it. I had to tip my cap in that
- 24:44regard but look I mean everybody knows it you you weren't giving
- 24:48it your all at every every game and I get it it's a long season
- 24:54it's that's that's a tough that's a tall ask but like you
- 24:58were very clearly counting your days.
- 25:01I think when when it got to be down the stretch and you know I
- 25:06think it was I I saw I saw an article that threw out the
- 25:10phrase breaking point and I think that's a pretty accurate
- 25:13way to describe where we were at with Redugo and it it's
- 25:18interesting to see him going to the Yankees given that it's what
- 25:21the it's only the 8th trade between the two teams since the
- 25:26start of the divisional era which was back in 1969.
- 25:30Didn't think it'd be Verdugo necessarily.
- 25:33I mean you would think a stat like that would would include
- 25:37some bigger names, but you know, I'm, I'm glad we're clearing up
- 25:44the space and maybe we can fill the void elsewhere.
- 25:48What's funny is that, like I remember when we were, I think
- 25:53he was for the Wild Card game. We're in Boston and I told you I
- 25:56was like, I can't, I I can't help but kind of like over Dugo.
- 26:00Like there was something about him I just, I respected like the
- 26:03the hype that he was and I get what you're saying.
- 26:07I think there's like there's a lot of what seems to be like a
- 26:11Glaber Torres kind of hey dude, you hot dog it sometimes.
- 26:16And like, it's super unclutch when you do that and you mess up
- 26:19and it's like it's kind of a vibe killer when that happens.
- 26:23So, So I'm a little bummed that, like, he's adding to that.
- 26:27Like there's AII just feel like there's a lot of.
- 26:31Just. I wouldn't say hot dogs, but
- 26:34like, a lot of like, flashy. I'm going to do this at 50%.
- 26:42So it looks good. Kind of guys in the lineup right
- 26:47now and unfortunately he's just another one of those guys.
- 26:52But man like. We we've talked about it.
- 26:55We're not necessarily fans of the the hot dog style play
- 26:59anyway, but at least if you're going to do it, at least be a
- 27:03guy that can afford to do it. Like I don't know who Alex
- 27:06Verdugo thinks he is like again, he's had his moments.
- 27:09He's had his, Yeah, like, you got to earn.
- 27:10It a little bit more I think, but like.
- 27:12You're Alex Verdugo, man. Yeah, what are we?
- 27:16I I could honestly see him becoming a a pretty quick fan
- 27:20favorite though I kind of, I kind of feel like he'll buy into
- 27:25the the fan base a little bit. I think when when players come
- 27:29in, I think we have like our our jitters and judges that are so
- 27:35stoic. Right.
- 27:37They're just like, you know, like they love our fans, but
- 27:40they're not engaging as much with the fans.
- 27:43And then you have like your Nick Swisher and I would put Alex
- 27:46Verdugo in that possible category of like.
- 27:49All. In on the opposite side of the
- 27:51spectrum, like I'm all in on this fan base, I'm looking at
- 27:54you. I'm hyped during the during the
- 27:56roll call. Like I could see him kind of
- 27:58being that way. Well, the the lasting image that
- 28:02I have with Verdugo when it relates to the Yankees is that
- 28:07little scuffle he got into the fans out there, right there in
- 28:13that front, first few rows and he's they're going back and
- 28:16forth. And I mean, these are going to
- 28:20be those same fans. And I get it.
- 28:22It happens all the time. A player comes to a city where
- 28:27maybe he wasn't as well received before, like a Contreras to the
- 28:33Cardinals situation, something like that, where like 98% of
- 28:37these fans were letting you have it for the the time that you had
- 28:42been coming up. But now that you're here, like
- 28:43you're one of us, I could see that happening and I would very
- 28:46much expect that to happen. But it with Verdugo, I feel like
- 28:51it's a little different because of the some of the rather heated
- 28:56interactions that I think he's had with not just the fans of
- 28:59New York, but just the organization Like he he's, I
- 29:03think he understood coming from Lai, think he very easily and
- 29:11clearly understood the the magnitude of of this, these two
- 29:16teams relationships. So I don't know, man.
- 29:20We'll see. Plus, I mean, I think when Jason
- 29:25Amigas gets back, he's he's going to, you know, he's going
- 29:28to fall into like 1/4 outfielder situation, occasional DH, he's
- 29:33hitting. That's the.
- 29:34That's the line up. Is.
- 29:36Dominguez coming back at all this year or yeah.
- 29:38Yeah, I think he's, I think he's projected to be like a June,
- 29:42July return. OK, all right.
- 29:44Because I thought he was missing more time than that.
- 29:48Well, yeah, I mean, this is, this is another situation you
- 29:50got one year before before you hit the market.
- 29:54So I I was to say, maybe they bring him back, maybe they
- 29:56don't, I don't know. But yeah, it'll be.
- 30:00I'll tell you what, man, it'll be an interesting year watching
- 30:03the Yankees. I mean, I've always been a big
- 30:06SODO guy. It's going to, it's going to
- 30:08pain me a little bit to watch him again, assuming that goes
- 30:12through. It's going to be weird watching
- 30:14Verdugo. No Beard.
- 30:17Verdugo. Yeah, I mean.
- 30:18People are gonna what numbers? Are you gonna wear?
- 30:22I mean the only the only proper thing to do would be for judge
- 30:26to give it up. Well, oddly enough, if this if
- 30:31this Soto deal goes through Higashioka War 66, that's the
- 30:35inverse of 99. Maybe that's a easy changes
- 30:39transition well. I mean, look, here's the deal,
- 30:41though. I mean, if Aaron Judge is all
- 30:42that he's talked up to be like this captain, this selfless
- 30:47leader, this fan favorite. I mean, yeah, you tell me what
- 30:52the right move is if you're in Judge, yeah.
- 30:56Make the offer, pal, for a one year former Red Sox.
- 31:01Give him the judges. Chambers, Give him the.
- 31:04Give him the number. Give him the locker.
- 31:06There you go. Heck give.
- 31:08Him the captaincy and like if you're truly self selfless, give
- 31:12him the captain. See, that's all I'm going to
- 31:13say. Enough Yankees it makes want to
- 31:18make. Makes me want to vomit.
- 31:19Let's talk Braves snagging Kelnick.
- 31:32I don't know, man. I don't hate.
- 31:33It. I don't know if it.
- 31:36Yeah, I mean, when I saw this go down, I said I know exactly
- 31:43what's going to happen. He's going to get to Atlanta and
- 31:49he's just going to, he's going to do, if not fully, he's going
- 31:54to, he's going to get close to what people were hoping I would.
- 31:58I would. I would assume so.
- 32:00I would assume so. Because that just seems to be
- 32:04the way things work with the Braves.
- 32:05They get guys dirt cheap. Not that this was not that this
- 32:09is like a contract necessarily but they just know how to work
- 32:13the system. They know how to game the system
- 32:15and they clearly had an eye for Kelnick and they said he is
- 32:22going to make us better. So they they must know something
- 32:26about the way that or they must have a a better idea of how he
- 32:29is going to fit in that system that's going to make them
- 32:34better. And they went out and got him at
- 32:36the cost of taking on a good chunk of money, but they turned
- 32:40right around and and flipped Marco Gonzalez.
- 32:42So yeah. Well, not to mention he's still
- 32:45got, what, four or five years left to control?
- 32:48So a. Lot of outside.
- 32:50Yeah, a lot of outside, a lot of potential.
- 32:53I think it's, you know, one of those things where like the the
- 32:55basement I I was texting with my buddy today and he was like
- 32:59would you rather have Verdugo or Kelnick?
- 33:02And that's just a recency like, you know, trade comparison.
- 33:08I, you know, it's like the we've seen the lows be pretty low for
- 33:12Kelnick and I think there's a lot more potential there.
- 33:16I think there's probably a super high ceiling waiting to see if
- 33:21he cracks into that. But you're talking about
- 33:23entering in in a lineup where like, you don't really have to
- 33:26be the dude, you kind of just surrounded by professional
- 33:32hitters. And chances are, when you're
- 33:34surrounded by professional hitters, you're probably going
- 33:37to pick up on some stuff and you're probably going to learn a
- 33:40little bit more so. Yeah, I was.
- 33:44I was listening to front of the pod, Dallas Braden's pod, and
- 33:51they were talking about Kalnick and he made a great point.
- 33:54And he was saying that, you know Kalnick was expected to be
- 34:01instant stud like from day one and that if that would have
- 34:08panned out, he, Braden was saying that it wasn't
- 34:13necessarily going to take it, wasn't going to eliminate the J
- 34:19Rod show. But it may have, you know,
- 34:22slowed it up a little bit possibly.
- 34:24I don't want to use the word diluted it but a little bit.
- 34:26But if he comes up and and and does what he was supposed or
- 34:31expected to do, it looks a little the the landscape looks a
- 34:36little bit different in Seattle. But the fact that he doesn't
- 34:39have to be, like you said, does not have to be that guy in
- 34:41Atlanta. He can he can kind of settle in
- 34:44and let the big boys do what they do and just play his game.
- 34:50I That's what I'm saying about the Braves identifying him as AI
- 34:54mean. Honestly, it's a brilliant move
- 34:56if you really think about it. You go look at.
- 34:59Our line up, pair that with his ceiling and the fact that he
- 35:06doesn't need to even reach that to make us better, like if he if
- 35:11he just plays a percentage of that, we're a better team.
- 35:17So I mean that's a great, that's a great move.
- 35:20Yeah, and he's never going to go above a 789 spot in the lineup.
- 35:26Doesn't need to, yeah. Yeah, as I mentioned, they got
- 35:32the Braves got Jared Kalanick, Marco Gonzalez and Evan White,
- 35:38Mariners basically just trying to off offload some money.
- 35:43And you would have to assume that this would be in
- 35:47preparation, because I don't even know if we did we mention
- 35:50Yuhanios Suarez. No, we didn't talk about that.
- 35:54Yeah. So all of these moves that
- 35:56they've been making, trying to offload some money, you you
- 35:58would have to think that they're preparing to do something this
- 36:03offseason, something big that would require a little bit of
- 36:07breathing room financially. Why am I?
- 36:09Spacing on where Suarez went. He went to.
- 36:17Milwaukee wasn't. Wasn't Milwaukee?
- 36:25Gosh, it's been what, like a week now?
- 36:26Has it been a week the D backs? That's what it was D.
- 36:30Backs. That's right.
- 36:33I like that. Actually.
- 36:34I like that fit, yeah. So I mean, if they don't, if
- 36:41they, if they're doing all this to do nothing, yeah.
- 36:45It's a little odd. Very strange.
- 36:48I would. Agree.
- 36:50I would agree. Where did Marco get dealt to?
- 36:54Like you said, the Braves flipped him.
- 36:56Where did he go? Place where careers go to, I
- 37:03won't say die, But where you go to be forgotten about.
- 37:10Tough. I mean it.
- 37:14Dude's an Indians eater. Regardless where he ends up,
- 37:16he's gonna, he's gonna give you Indians.
- 37:20But yeah, I I mean, if you're the Mariners, you gotta you
- 37:24gotta show me something like it. You gotta give me more than
- 37:28offloading money. You're going to need to fill
- 37:31that void with something there. I mean, it's not, it's not how
- 37:36about superstar studded market? But like, you got to go out and
- 37:39give me something. How?
- 37:40About the Lee, the KBO kid who just got posted.
- 37:52Oh. As a As a fit.
- 37:56As a Seattle, as a. Fit second baseman right?
- 38:05Am I crazy? Outfielder.
- 38:08Really. Could have swore he's a second
- 38:10baseman. I don't know what's wrong with
- 38:11me. Oh, there you go.
- 38:13That could be a fit. Jung Huli.
- 38:19A little some some there. I don't know.
- 38:21You're I I mean, I agree though. The Mariners are like, you're
- 38:24not far from getting over the hump.
- 38:25Like it? Like let's double down, Let's
- 38:28reassess. You got offloaded some some
- 38:30pieces. Let's reassess.
- 38:32Get back on it. No need to blow it up.
- 38:39Do you mind the celnic post without thinking the Mariners at
- 38:48all? I actually don't and maybe it
- 38:52just caught me out on a in a in a petty mood when I saw that
- 38:55come out. But I'm like, you know, chances
- 38:59are that there was some bad blood there with the handling of
- 39:02his, his young career and probably.
- 39:06He's. Probably a little.
- 39:07I mean, I'm sure if he was older and he was looking back, he may
- 39:11think differently about it. But I I I can't fault the kid
- 39:14for being a little bit short sighted in that sense if if it
- 39:20was intentional to be like you know like I I'm looking ahead
- 39:24I'm I'm looking forward now. I I don't have time for fake.
- 39:29Yeah. Appreciation for a team that
- 39:33didn't didn't exactly handle my career trajectory as as well as
- 39:38they should have So like I sure I I can't fault them.
- 39:43Fair enough. That's just me.
- 39:50I agree, he'll learn. Though like I said, if it was a
- 39:55different, if he was a little older down the road, he may
- 39:58think differently about it. But all I have to say, Craig
- 40:03Kimbrel signed a one year deal worth 13 mil with the OS Today
- 40:11option for 2025. Pretty genius by the OS in my
- 40:18mind. Batista is out for next year
- 40:20right? So yeah, do what you will, Keep
- 40:24Kano in the eight spot close games with Kimbrel, rotate them,
- 40:28whatever. But you're talking about AI mean
- 40:32he gets a lot of hate and he's he's definitely blowing some
- 40:34saves. I've I've hated on him a bit,
- 40:35but I mean he's a borderline Hall of Famer and has you know
- 40:42close down and clutch games. So, you know, I think it, I
- 40:48think it makes a lot of sense. It's a it's a really quick
- 40:52pretty durable Band-Aid for losing Bautista on the back end
- 40:58of that bullpen. So yeah, I would say he probably
- 41:03remains closer. I would just keep Cano in the
- 41:06eighth spot, right? Might as well.
- 41:09Like, they're both. Like both.
- 41:11Let's just keep you in your strong.
- 41:13Let's keep you in your strong spots.
- 41:15You know, Kimbrel, we don't need to mess around with the 8th
- 41:18inning. Canal.
- 41:20Let's just prime you to stay in the 8th inning because Batista
- 41:22is going to come back eventually, right?
- 41:25So I like it. Please do more.
- 41:29If you're an Orioles fan, I would say please, please be
- 41:32doing more. Yeah.
- 41:33For sure. I understand that relievers,
- 41:38especially leveraged relievers, are more dispensable, especially
- 41:46in a in a game now that I feel like see so much turnover, more
- 41:55so than I feel like used to be like true.
- 41:58I don't know if turnover was much of a thing as it is now.
- 42:00I mean, certainly to a degree, but I just don't feel like it's
- 42:04been as much. But I would think a guy like
- 42:06Kimbrel would be able to stick around a little longer, yeah?
- 42:12But. He's, I mean, he's bounced
- 42:14around now, man, that's crazy. Eighth team, you're talking one
- 42:19of the like, I would say. A top ten reliever of all time?
- 42:25Is that crazy to say? I mean, I we can.
- 42:31Let's pull up the numbers here. I don't think it's that crazy.
- 42:37Even if he's not just the name alone, you would think a guy
- 42:42like Craig Kimbrel would be able to stick around a little longer
- 42:46than he than he does. Not to say that he.
- 42:48I mean, you're not going to see like a career closer stick
- 42:52around with a single team, but my goodness, well, I'm not sure
- 43:00Mariano Rivera, but he's 8th. He's 8th all time in saves.
- 43:07Yeah, with 417. More than Dennis Eckersley.
- 43:13More than Joe Nathan. More than Tapplebon.
- 43:17Raleigh Fingers. I mean 11. 192 strikeouts in 757
- 43:26innings. It's pretty good coming off a
- 43:38132 ERA plus last year. I actually didn't hate the fit
- 43:46in Philly. I.
- 43:48Didn't either. I liked it too, but.
- 43:50I feel like with his style of game, his personality just
- 43:55seemed like a a decent fit. Not to say that Baltimore's any
- 43:59like much different, but I don't know.
- 44:02I mean, on paper it's a good fit, like he talked about.
- 44:05But. We'll see.
- 44:07We're going to. See him again in the fall,
- 44:09that's we're going to see him again.
- 44:12So you're going to see him in high leverage spots in the
- 44:14postseason. Again, just be prepared for it
- 44:17and I I think if you're the Orioles, go get another.
- 44:21But, you know, maybe we'll need to talk to Ryan a little bit
- 44:23more, but go get a bullpen arm that you know another one.
- 44:28Go get another one. Don't wear this guy down into
- 44:31the dirt and then complain when postseason rolls around and he
- 44:36coughs up a lead or does something sketchy.
- 44:39You know, I feel like that's what every team does, every
- 44:45team. He goes to the bullpens and
- 44:47shambles and a lot of a lot of weight on his shoulders.
- 44:52So that's just me. We shall see.
- 45:00I'm. I'm having a hard time picturing
- 45:02him in a nose jersey. It's.
- 45:03I wonder if that man button is sticking around?
- 45:07I sure hope not, man. Oh, get that out of here.
- 45:11Yeah, Yeah. I can't see the UNI.
- 45:13I just can't see it. Weirdly, I can.
- 45:17See Soto in a Yankees jersey. But I can't.
- 45:20I can't see Kimbrel in a nose jersey.
- 45:22Yeah. Weird.
- 45:27I wanted to touch on real quick before we get into our our
- 45:31closing segment, our new closing segment, these Shohei leaks,
- 45:40This is yet another name that could sign tonight, could sign
- 45:44next week, who knows I've. Seen before the weekend, I've
- 45:50seen that a few times. Well, I saw, I think I saw by
- 45:53the end of the weekend, yeah. Seen a few of those.
- 45:58They're all they're all conflicting reports, I know, but
- 46:02I wanted to touch on these leaks because this seems to have been
- 46:08a rather large talking point when it comes to the show.
- 46:15Hey, sweepstakes. As we as we know that was made
- 46:19public, whether or not he's actually said that I think has
- 46:24yet to be determined. But it was made public that if
- 46:27Shohei, if his meetings with specific teams were made public,
- 46:34or if or if the details surrounding those meetings were
- 46:37made public, that that would affect their chances in the
- 46:42process of acquiring him, which we already talked about don't
- 46:46have a problem with like. And this isn't the first player
- 46:50to do that, so no. No, she's.
- 46:54Probably the biggest player to ever do it.
- 46:56Sure. But it was funny because in the
- 47:00last 24 to 36 hours, I think we have seen both.
- 47:07We've seen news come out both about the Cubs and the Dodgers.
- 47:12Yeah, the Cubs that got a little heated.
- 47:15I don't know if it's interesting.
- 47:16Yeah, this is Bob. Yet another Nightingale moment.
- 47:20Yet this guy is just making a name for himself for all the
- 47:23wrong reasons. Bob Bob Nightingale put out a
- 47:27report that said that the Cubs were falling out of the bidding
- 47:32for Shohei Ohtani, saying that their quote optimism of landing
- 47:37Ohtani has now significantly waned.
- 47:40However, the club's president of baseball OPS, Jed Hoyer, denied
- 47:45that framing. Denied that at the winter
- 47:48meetings. I don't know where that came
- 47:50from, Foyer said to the Chicago Sun Times.
- 47:54There's there's no nothing to report whatsoever.
- 48:01How? How Pissed.
- 48:02Like, if this is true, Like, in terms of Shohei wanting these
- 48:08teams keep quiet, like how pissed would you be at a guy
- 48:10like Bob Nightingale? Be like dude, shut your mouth.
- 48:12Yeah, I know it's wild. I mean, I think that there's
- 48:19there's obviously like this, this media curtain and I think
- 48:23that there is like this understanding of teams and
- 48:29organizations and players. Like, there's stuff that the
- 48:32media will never get a hold of or there's stuff that they'll
- 48:37never have the ability to release.
- 48:41So I I'd like to think that Shohei and his camp would be
- 48:44like, all right, hey, it's all good cubbies.
- 48:46Like, this isn't coming from you.
- 48:49This isn't coming from a source. Like, you could tell that, you
- 48:53know this reporter. I'm sure someone in in Ohtani
- 48:56Land is like, hey, Bob Nightingale's got a lot of stuff
- 48:58wrong, by the way. So, like, just take that with a
- 49:01grain of salt. I'm sure there's got to be
- 49:04somebody saying that, right? So that's a good point.
- 49:06Yeah, yeah. I would hope that it doesn't
- 49:09sway or or affect anything. I think Otani in Chicago would
- 49:14be kind of cool, to be honest. I'd be down and let's be.
- 49:17Honest, I think. I think SHO Hayes.
- 49:19Probably. I could see him calling him Boob
- 49:22Nightingale. Yeah, I think.
- 49:25He's in on that, yeah. He I think SHO hay, he may, he
- 49:31may be really good at baseball and he may make a lot of money.
- 49:34But I think at the end of the day, SHO Hayes, one of us, I
- 49:37think. So I think should be calling
- 49:38that boob. Nightingale Yeah Group text
- 49:41Just. Clean it up.
- 49:42What are we doing? On the flip side though, better
- 49:45your job. You met, you mentioned Shohei's
- 49:50camp, hopefully possibly telling Shohei like, hey, this, this
- 49:54didn't come from the team. On the flip side, you've got
- 49:57Dave Roberts talking to the media directly for a good what,
- 50:0220 minutes saying, yeah, we met with Shohei, this and that.
- 50:09I saw a couple people sent me this.
- 50:14This graphic set a tail in a tail in Three Parts ESP.
- 50:22NS Jeff Passan reported earlier this week that if a meeting
- 50:25between Ohtani and any team becomes public, the two way
- 50:27superstar will hold it against the interested club.
- 50:30The next post down, Dave Roberts, said he and the Dodgers
- 50:34met with Shohei Ohtani at Dodger Stadium a couple days ago.
- 50:37I think it went well, he said. Next post down, Robert spoke
- 50:42freely and relaxed for 20 minutes, but his face became
- 50:45serious as he spent several moments reading a text message
- 50:48on his phone. After his session, he
- 50:49immediately huddled with the Dodgers public relations
- 50:52officials. So either, Dave, yeah, I didn't.
- 50:58Know that last part either Dave Roberts was living with his head
- 51:02under the sand or is Colin show Hayes Bluff.
- 51:07I like I don't know what's going on here but that like how if
- 51:11regardless how you feel about it if Dave Roberts thinks who does
- 51:14this guy think he is? Like no we're going to talk
- 51:17about it. I'm going to let the the media
- 51:19know that we met if even if that's how he he feels about it.
- 51:24I'm sure the rest of the people in your organization in that
- 51:26front office don't really appreciate it.
- 51:29Even if there is any truth right to show, like I said to, whether
- 51:33or not Shohei actually said that if there is a shred of truth to
- 51:35that, maybe don't spend 20 minutes talking about it with
- 51:40the media. I don't know.
- 51:40That's just me. Such a.
- 51:45Dave Roberts thing to do to well, I don't know.
- 51:50I mean I I think there's a lot of people that understand that
- 51:52the Dodgers are favorites. I think to just sit there and
- 51:55and play dumb and say that there hasn't been any discussion or
- 51:59you know you don't want to comment on it.
- 52:00I don't know it's I I can see what how where it would be
- 52:03difficult and why it would be difficult.
- 52:08But at the same time it's like yeah like if this is true and I
- 52:12can't see why it wouldn't be true.
- 52:14You know like I we talked about it before I'm a fan of it.
- 52:18I think like Shohei asking for discretion and for
- 52:23professionalism to just you know keep it under wraps somewhat and
- 52:28like keep it between us, absolutely not the first player
- 52:32to request that from a team. So let's not overreact there.
- 52:39I just I I'm curious to see there, there are some teams that
- 52:43are dropping out. I I think there are.
- 52:45There are teams dropping out. I think it's silly to say that
- 52:48there aren't. But like if LA is going to be
- 52:56man, talk about maximizing your brand.
- 53:01And I know you were in LA, but you weren't really in LA, you
- 53:04know what I mean? So being in Dodger land is a
- 53:08whole different ball game. So if there was, say, like the
- 53:14Dodgers were the only this, the only thing we ever heard, this
- 53:17is the only leak that we ever got that was legitimate.
- 53:20And it's Dave Roberts putting his foot in his mouth and he
- 53:24still signs there and no other team let any leaks out.
- 53:28Dude, that can't just be the only variable that we're paying
- 53:30attention to. It's just it's the only thing
- 53:32that we're getting out of this. It's the only thing we're
- 53:34reading about this. It's the only thing reporters
- 53:37can go off of. So yeah.
- 53:46I'm just so I'm all. Done.
- 53:49I'm just. I'm ready for Domino's the Fall.
- 53:51This stuff is getting old, man. I feel like it gets worse every
- 53:54year. I cannot express how done I am
- 53:59with these reporters. Yeah, it's just so like, it's so
- 54:05transparently obvious that they're bored, that they have
- 54:09nothing to do. And then you got a guy, didn't
- 54:12you? Failed to mention this?
- 54:14You got a guy like Buster, only I don't know if you saw his his
- 54:19piece that he put out. I need to find this.
- 54:23You may have already deleted it if I'm if I'm being honest with
- 54:26you. Oh, I know what you're talking
- 54:27about. The one that was in the group
- 54:29text the other day yesterday. Yeah.
- 54:34He said he He tweeted an article that I'm I I'm assuming he wrote
- 54:42let me pull it up here ESPN piece.
- 54:45Yeah he wrote it and he linked to it on on Twitter X whatever.
- 54:50And the headline was Shohei Ohtani's top secret free agency
- 54:54is silly and a missed opportunity for him in the
- 54:56sport. Cry more Buster like you and
- 55:02these writers are just so butthurt that you have nothing
- 55:05to talk about and it's just eating you guys alive.
- 55:09Like just be like the rest. Like I I know this is how you
- 55:13how you make a living. But maybe let's try to reinvent
- 55:19or discover a new route to take when this when the offseason
- 55:24hits, because it's the same song and dance every.
- 55:27Year you. You all are recycling tweets.
- 55:32You're you're making up things to that end up contradicting one
- 55:36another. And I'm not just saying, Buster,
- 55:38I'm talking about all of them. Honestly, outside of like
- 55:40passing at this point, it's all it's the same thing every year.
- 55:46And I saw I saw somebody put out a post where it's like every
- 55:52baseball writer to ever exist. Just tweeting out deal is close
- 55:58just to get clicks for and it was talking about the Soto deal.
- 56:04It's like that's all they do. It's like, OK, thanks for
- 56:06telling us that we're close. Thanks for telling us that.
- 56:08It's that this team is buying. Somebody that it's.
- 56:11Being finalized that they're working on like we know this
- 56:15already, tell us something different because I'm tired of
- 56:20this game that we play every year.
- 56:22It's so it it has. I can only imagine it has to
- 56:26turn people off to the sport. Like in such a it's such a
- 56:29pivotal time where you can, I know it's the offseason, but
- 56:33like, you can really use this to generate some different buzz.
- 56:37But if the only buzz that you're generating is stale, recycled
- 56:41reports that contradict one another, you're not really
- 56:45helping your case out. 100%. I don't know.
- 56:49I'm just done with it. Any other thoughts on free
- 56:52agency stuff before we? Like I said, just ready for
- 56:57Domino's to start falling. I think once Shouhei Yamamoto
- 57:03fall, other teams can start to figure out like the teams that
- 57:08that didn't get, those guys can start to figure out like where
- 57:11to pivot. And I think you'll see a lot of
- 57:12Plan BS and a lot of Plan CS fall into place.
- 57:16And that's what I mean that's the this is what Winter meetings
- 57:20are for. So I'm hoping we get more in the
- 57:23next few days to obviously out date this episode quickly.
- 57:29That's the nature of the beast this time of year.
- 57:31It's all right. Yep.
- 57:34Are we gonna do it like an emergency pod?
- 57:36If if Shohei signs. We might have to.
- 57:39I mean, it's Shohei I need to probably.
- 57:43We could probably wait on Yamamoto.
- 57:46Probably. Wait on Yamamoto?
- 57:48As as excited as I would be, Shohei.
- 57:51Is going to be a yeah, Shohei is going to be the probably the
- 57:55biggest free agent we've ever seen, yeah.
- 57:58Adventures say yeah. So maybe an emergency pod for
- 58:01that? Assuming it's not at like 11:30
- 58:05at night on a Friday, no. Knowing our luck, it's going to
- 58:08be like 10:00 AM and we're just in the middle of work day.
- 58:12Yep. Yeah.
- 58:13That's that's that's most likely scenario I I kind of alluded to
- 58:19it something and I had alluded to it last episode I believe
- 58:24Something I think we wanted to do this offseason is use a few
- 58:27minutes at the end of these episodes to do a little deep
- 58:31dive into some some unbreakable records.
- 58:35And the one we've got for you today is Pete Rose hit total.
- 58:42Yeah, safe to say with the style of baseball that we have, unless
- 58:52something drastic changes and we see a complete shift in the way
- 58:56the game is played for years to come, venture to say that our
- 59:03guy Pete is safe 4256 career hits the most all time.
- 59:10Yeah. Yeah, like you said, style of
- 59:13play, rule changes. I mean, it's just longevity.
- 59:18Longevity is a huge one. Not just longevity, but like
- 59:23also durability. Like just in a single season.
- 59:28You know what I mean? Like, it's ridiculous.
- 59:31We see a handful of guys that play over 155 games a year,
- 59:37literally a handful we could probably count on on both.
- 59:39Our hands may have to use a few toes, but that's just not what
- 59:45it was back then. Like every guy played every day
- 59:47back then. So it's just a different ball
- 59:50game, different style. I do think, you know, I I would
- 59:55argue to say that pitching has probably gotten better since
- 59:59then. You're seeing a lot more.
- 1:00:02You're seeing more consistent velocity with more movement than
- 1:00:05you saw back then. You're seeing the whole bullpen
- 1:00:09effect. You know, Pete Rose probably got
- 1:00:12to see a a guy three or four times every day.
- 1:00:17Nowadays you're only seeing that guy twice and then you're seeing
- 1:00:20two or three more guys individually after that.
- 1:00:24So the it's just the game has changed.
- 1:00:26So, so much ain't going to happen I would say.
- 1:00:33I mean it's we'll get in other milestones for sure.
- 1:00:39I wouldn't say it's impossible, but I just don't see it.
- 1:00:45I don't know, dude. I mean, 3000 these days is is
- 1:00:49huge, a huge milestone 4256, I mean, my goodness, the reason,
- 1:01:00part of the reason when we're talking about a segment is part
- 1:01:06of the reason I wanted to do something like this is because I
- 1:01:10wanted to. Not only maybe help some some
- 1:01:14listeners figure out or discover some new things, but also for
- 1:01:17ourselves, maybe learn a new thing or two right off the top.
- 1:01:21I don't think this is something that I was aware of.
- 1:01:24Maybe you were, but I don't. Maybe I had heard it in passing
- 1:01:27or read it somewhere. But did you know that Ty Cobb,
- 1:01:32who's at #2, by the way, that's the record he broke.
- 1:01:35Yeah. Did you?
- 1:01:37Do you know the whole thing about his hit total?
- 1:01:40No. What about it?
- 1:01:42How they? Didn't know what day Pete Rose
- 1:01:44actually broke the record because they didn't know how
- 1:01:47many hits. Ty.
- 1:01:49Cobb actually had, I think I. Remember hearing that back in
- 1:01:52the day? It was.
- 1:01:53Crazy like I was reading this. I I was not.
- 1:01:56Like I said, I may have heard it in passing, but I was not.
- 1:01:58When I read it, I was like, this is news to me.
- 1:02:01Yeah, but they I I pulled a little blurb here, it said
- 1:02:05because record keeping in baseball in the early part of
- 1:02:07the 20th century wasn't up to today's standards, the American
- 1:02:11League erroneously double counted A2 hit game by Cobb in
- 1:02:141910. So in actuality, Cobb finished
- 1:02:17with forty one 4189 hits, not the familiar number of 4191.
- 1:02:25So apparently he actually broke the record a few nights before
- 1:02:29in Chicago. Yeah, that's what I was reading.
- 1:02:32Wow. But then the one?
- 1:02:34Be tough. Imagine having that baseball.
- 1:02:36I don't know if the Hall of Fame has it or not, if it's like a
- 1:02:39memorabilia keepsake or something, but pretty wild.
- 1:02:43You got the wrong one. I mean the 1:00 we we all have
- 1:02:48seen like the highlight that we've seen he's at, he's at home
- 1:02:54little, little inside out to left, left little.
- 1:02:58Bleeder. Yeah.
- 1:02:59Little Bleeder. Yeah, apparently that was.
- 1:03:05Yeah, I don't know. Man, it's yeah, I agree with
- 1:03:10everything. It's just it's not going to
- 1:03:12happen. It's not going to happen.
- 1:03:13It's 20 years of averaging over 200 hits.
- 1:03:17That's just it doesn't happen anymore, he.
- 1:03:19Had a 162 game average of 194 hits over the span of 24 years.
- 1:03:30You. Don't see 24 year careers
- 1:03:32anymore. Barely see 20 year careers and
- 1:03:36you're sure as hell not going to see 190 plus hits averaged a
- 1:03:42year. Just not going to happen for. 24
- 1:03:44years it. I'm telling it.
- 1:03:46Nobody's touching this. Nobody.
- 1:03:51Real quick. I don't know if we've ever get
- 1:03:53him into the hall or where do you stand on that?
- 1:03:57Are you asking me? Yeah, we've we've.
- 1:04:00Talked about this. Before.
- 1:04:01It's been a while. I think we.
- 1:04:02Have have we not? I don't remember.
- 1:04:06I mean absolutely dude. I mean what are we even talking
- 1:04:11about Look not to get, not to get too illustrative here but
- 1:04:18venture to say we've got we've got some some worse people in
- 1:04:23the hall. I'm sure we've got some some
- 1:04:28some gamblers, some degenerates, some drunks, some druggies, some
- 1:04:32rapists, some racists. Like I'm sorry if that hurts
- 1:04:36people's feelings, but we got to stop being naive.
- 1:04:40And the fact that he was just, he was betting on his own team.
- 1:04:47I I don't understand how you're going to ban him from the Hall
- 1:04:55of. Fame, It's.
- 1:04:57And and people can sit there and talk about bonds and how he's
- 1:05:01not in the hall and I'm like, that's you can't.
- 1:05:05Hear the two. Conversations.
- 1:05:08The fact that you have the true hit King not in the hall.
- 1:05:15Like, what are we doing? And I.
- 1:05:17And I've said this since day one.
- 1:05:19What's going to happen is he's going to die.
- 1:05:21We will no longer have Pete Rose with us.
- 1:05:23And then they're going to do this whole ceremonious Hey,
- 1:05:28let's extend the olive branch to the Rose family, yeah.
- 1:05:31Probably really surprised Selig didn't do it on his way out.
- 1:05:36I'm curious to see if if Manfred will just because of he's
- 1:05:45obviously like tries to be a trailblazer, you know what I
- 1:05:49mean? I wonder if he does it late,
- 1:05:54late in in his, but that's what I'm.
- 1:05:58Saying that's what I'm saying. We're getting to the point where
- 1:06:01it it. I mean, Pete's not getting any
- 1:06:04younger. Yeah, yeah, you're right.
- 1:06:06He'll probably be dead. A little fun fact about well, we
- 1:06:13now know it wasn't the technical record-breaking hit, but for the
- 1:06:18one that we do, think of it as the one in Cincinnati at home.
- 1:06:25Fun fact. You know who the catcher was for
- 1:06:28that at bat? You don't, but I'm just going to
- 1:06:32see if you happen to throw out a Guess Who.
- 1:06:37Are they playing the Padres? Mike Soscia.
- 1:06:48Bruce Bocci. Wow.
- 1:06:50Well, fun fact, nice. He also got run over by Pete
- 1:06:54Rose in one of those infamous collisions at home plate.
- 1:06:57Nice I. Don't know if a lot of people
- 1:06:59know that I didn't. Even know Bruce Belgie was a
- 1:07:03catcher well. It makes a lot.
- 1:07:06Of sense been saying it. Makes a lot of sense.
- 1:07:11Been saying it. But yeah, going back to the the
- 1:07:15longevity thing, I I think that's where in regards to this
- 1:07:19record, I think that's where a lot of people's argument comes
- 1:07:21to a head is they say he's and to be fair, he was overrated in
- 1:07:28certain aspects. Like I'm not going to sit here
- 1:07:30and say he's the best hitter of all time because he's not sure.
- 1:07:35There's something to be said about like you said, having the
- 1:07:39durability to to play that long and to to hit that well.
- 1:07:44But that doesn't. I don't.
- 1:07:46I'm not of the belief that that makes you the the best hitter of
- 1:07:48all time. Well, I.
- 1:07:49Don't I'm I think just on, like today's terms, we can't sit here
- 1:07:53and say Luis Arayas is the best hitter in the league, even
- 1:07:57though he leads the league in hits like you.
- 1:07:59Yeah, I agree. There's a lot.
- 1:08:02More a lot, lot more variables that that come into play on
- 1:08:06something like that. But what was interesting in
- 1:08:10looking at this career of his obviously has the most hits all
- 1:08:18time. But when you look at his
- 1:08:21numbers, his batting average is not in the top 100 all time.
- 1:08:26Yeah, his OBP is not in the top 100 of all time.
- 1:08:30His slugging was not in the top 100, nor was his OPSOP.
- 1:08:36S Plus A118. You look at how many I mean,
- 1:08:42which makes sense because OPS is. 784.
- 1:08:49Yeah, a lot of singles, but it meant.
- 1:08:54What I was saying is it makes sense when you play that long,
- 1:08:56but if you look, I think he doesn't.
- 1:08:58He lead all of baseball and outs made or as close to it.
- 1:09:02Sure, I bet. I mean.
- 1:09:04That, that that just comes with the territory.
- 1:09:06But all that to say there, yes, you can look at Pete Rose's
- 1:09:09career and say that he's overrated in certain aspects,
- 1:09:12but to for somebody to look at Pete Rose and say, well, it's
- 1:09:19just because he played for as long as he did, There's value in
- 1:09:22that. Like, we talk about it all the
- 1:09:23time. Like, OK, yeah, he played for a
- 1:09:27long time. But that's a skill in and of
- 1:09:31itself is to be able to to have your your body ready to be able
- 1:09:35to do it at that high of a level day in and day out for 24 years.
- 1:09:40Yeah, I'm going to take that into account.
- 1:09:42So. Never struck out more than 100
- 1:09:46times in a in a season by the way.
- 1:09:48Highest number I think was 76. I mean, if you're if you're
- 1:09:55averaging, what? What did I say?
- 1:09:58194 hits for 24 years. Not a lot of room for
- 1:10:02strikeouts. That's crazy. 10 years of over
- 1:10:10200 hits, highest being 230 hits in a season.
- 1:10:15Whoa. Wow.
- 1:10:20Crazy, crazy. All right, that's good stuff.
- 1:10:29Look at us. That's good.
- 1:10:30That was fun cracking into. A new segment, we'll get better
- 1:10:32at this and we're gonna get into some other stuff.
- 1:10:36Yeah, we're we'll be learning along the way.
- 1:10:38It'll just give us something to to chat about if if things are
- 1:10:41slow. But yeah, we'll have some more.
- 1:10:45We'll have some more. We gotta we're working on a
- 1:10:47list. We're workshopping a list of
- 1:10:48some records that we want to get into some of the more obvious
- 1:10:51ones. But there's some that I don't
- 1:10:52think a lot of people think about that we'd like to true tap
- 1:10:56tap into a little bit. So more to come.
- 1:10:59Closing the book here. Ah, real quick.
- 1:11:04Yadi Molina named special assistant to the president of
- 1:11:06baseball OPS for the Saint Louis Cardinals.
- 1:11:09How do we feel about that? Duh.
- 1:11:11Should be a manager though. Yeah I need.
- 1:11:14I don't really front office all he's.
- 1:11:16Got to go. Even if he's not a manager, I I
- 1:11:19just need him in the dugout. He.
- 1:11:21He's. Not he's not a front office guy,
- 1:11:23but we just talked about this before hopping on that we like
- 1:11:29the idea of players getting into the front office.
- 1:11:31Yeah, could affect. Some good change, but if what I
- 1:11:40will say is that if he's in the dugout right now, you know
- 1:11:43Wilson Contreras will never be accepted ever.
- 1:11:47So maybe give that a little time.
- 1:11:54And it's a rather tumultuous time in Saint Louis right now.
- 1:11:57I don't know if that's a good way to introduce him into the
- 1:11:59club. End of the I would agree.
- 1:12:01Give him a clean slate and dugout.
- 1:12:03Yeah, I agree outfitter Jason Hayward.
- 1:12:07I mean, we could have talked about this during the free
- 1:12:10agency segment, but probably not really noteworthy necessarily.
- 1:12:15Going back to the Dodgers on a one year, 9,000,001 year, $9
- 1:12:19million deal bounced back last year, hit 26915 bombs, played
- 1:12:29all three outfield spots. Yeah, quality defense is still
- 1:12:34there. And provides, yeah, I was going
- 1:12:36to say provides them a little flexibility with this news that
- 1:12:39we just got about Mookie being their second baseman, which,
- 1:12:42yeah, it's like kind of surprised, but kind of not, you
- 1:12:46know, I like. It I'll be here for it.
- 1:12:51And I think that was it. Unless.
- 1:12:56You. Got.
- 1:12:57Unless you got anything else, I'm all.

- 1:13:34like Sunday night. Give us a chance, you know?
- 1:13:41Is that fair? That'd be nice.
- 1:13:43He did say by the end of the weekend, so maybe he's going to
- 1:13:46give, maybe he's going to run this thing out to the absolute
- 1:13:49latest point. I'm about it.
