Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning, good morning, and welcome, welcome. Look,
• 0:06
Speaker 1: I meant his time now for car talk with Brad
• 0:10
Speaker 1: Dungeons and Dungeons Toya and Brad.
• 0:13
Speaker 2: You bought friends again. How you doing there by? Well,
• 0:15
  Speaker 2: I'm doing great.
• 0:17
Speaker 3: A little bit of rain, my phone's springing to life unexpectedly,
• 0:21
Speaker 3: but other than that, it's all good.
• 0:23
Speaker 2: It's all live. Man. It's in the middle of June
• 0:27
  Speaker 2: here in Oklahoma.
• 0:28
Speaker 3: It's certainly better than being a being one hundred degrees
• 0:32
Speaker 3: or whatever. Coach Tennessee knows that. Ye, football is always
• 0:37
Speaker 3: better when it's a little bit cooler. Yeah, we had
• 0:40
Speaker 3: an opinion great, great.
• 0:41
Speaker 4: Workouts more and luckily we had a lot of basketball kids,
• 0:44
Speaker 4: a lot of baseball kids going today, so we're able
• 0:47
Speaker 4: to go one group. So we did our outside work
• 0:49
Speaker 4: first when it was coming in and got it started
• 0:51
Speaker 4: raining on us right towards the end, and then we
• 0:53
Speaker 4: got the head of the weight room while I was
• 0:54
Speaker 4: pouring down and work worked out great, worked out.
• 0:57
Speaker 3: That was brief and no hail. We decided not to
• 1:00
Speaker 3: do the hail dance. Binger's cross. Well, welcome to the show, coach.
• 1:07
Speaker 3: It's great to have you in Bartlesville. And uh, you know,
• 1:11
Speaker 3: it's really a good time. I think at the school
• 1:14
Speaker 3: for so much, so much stuff going on.
• 1:16
Speaker 2: But there you're in your.
• 1:18
Speaker 3: Preseason for the first time here in Bartlesville. But you've
• 1:22
Speaker 3: been coaching football for a long time. Nice way to say,
• 1:25
Speaker 3: I'm old, hum brad. Yeah, but you're right, Yes, I have.
• 1:28
Speaker 2: No experience is important. You're going into your number thirty four.
• 1:31
Speaker 2: So thirty four, so you.
• 1:33
Speaker 4: Have been doing a long time. Was lucky enough to
• 1:34
Speaker 4: start at Jinks back in the day? And how did
• 1:36
Speaker 4: you get into coaching?
• 1:38
Speaker 2: What? What you know? I was?
• 1:39
Speaker 4: I was pre lo all the way through college and
• 1:43
Speaker 4: just because that's what everybody told me I should do.
• 1:44
Speaker 2: I was a thirty one act guy.
• 1:47
Speaker 4: I had a you know, was a contest speech guy
• 1:49
Speaker 4: in high school, did all the competitive speaking stuff, got
• 1:51
  Speaker 4: into that stuff.
• 1:52
Speaker 2: And so you need to be a lawyer.
• 1:54
Speaker 4: Well it sounds like a good jokes, like good money,
• 1:56
Speaker 4: you know, you think back to anything about money and
• 1:58
Speaker 4: all that, and did it and was rolling through pre
• 2:02
Speaker 4: law and I was at k State and I took
• 2:03
Speaker 4: my LSATs and scored pretty high on them and started
• 2:06
Speaker 4: getting acceptance letters to law schools around I was okay okay,
• 2:10
Speaker 4: it was impoy estate. It was there was some smaller ones,
• 2:12
Speaker 4: and then I got the acceptance letter to Harvard Law
• 2:14
Speaker 4: School and I was like, it's real. Now, this is real,
• 2:18
Speaker 4: and I'm like, I cannot see myself wearing a suit
• 2:21
Speaker 4: and tie every day.
• 2:22
  Speaker 2: I don't know. I look back now and I think
• 2:24
Speaker 2: parts of that could have been.
• 2:25
Speaker 4: Fun, depending on which avenue I'd have gone in it.
• 2:27
Speaker 4: But I just I called my dad and said, Dad,
• 2:29
Speaker 4: I'm changing my major. And Dad's like, well, you know,
• 2:33
Speaker 4: I thought you should have gone pre med to start with,
• 2:35
  Speaker 4: so that's fine.
• 2:36
Speaker 2: Like, no, I'm changing changing to pe what you're doing.
• 2:40
  Speaker 2: What I said, I'm gonna be a coach, I said,
• 2:42
Speaker 2: you know, it just what I love to do. I mean,
• 2:44
  Speaker 2: I'm still playing.
• 2:45
Speaker 4: I was still playing football time, and I said, I
• 2:47
Speaker 4: just can't. I had to start coaching some help with
• 2:49
Speaker 4: some little youth teams around in the off season and
• 2:51
Speaker 4: doing some things like that, and some of the classes
• 2:54
Speaker 4: I was having was doing some of that stuff.
• 2:55
Speaker 2: So I did it, and you know, it's the best
• 2:57
  Speaker 2: decision I made.
• 2:58
Speaker 4: I say, you know, all the time I've been doing it,
• 3:00
Speaker 4: twenty four years, I haven't been to work yet.
• 3:01
Speaker 2: So you know, I wake up every day and I
• 3:03
Speaker 2: get to go to work. I don't have to go
• 3:04
  Speaker 2: to work.
• 3:04
Speaker 4: I told my dad that, you know, if you're one
• 3:06
Speaker 4: of the hardest work you taught me work ethic. You
• 3:08
Speaker 4: taught me how to do this grind. He'd worked for Safeway,
• 3:11
Speaker 4: than Homeland and Walmart his whole life, start off as
• 3:13
Speaker 4: a bag in groceries and became a manager and you know,
• 3:16
Speaker 4: work his way up. But I said, you know, you
• 3:18
Speaker 4: wake up, you have to go to work every day,
• 3:20
Speaker 4: and you do it, and you taught me how to
• 3:22
Speaker 4: do that. You're not afraid to get up and go
• 3:23
Speaker 4: to work at four o'clock in the morning. You're not
• 3:24
Speaker 4: afraid to out work everybody. But I don't want to
• 3:27
Speaker 4: have to go to work, and so I don't. I
• 3:29
Speaker 4: get to go to work, and you know, people ask
• 3:31
Speaker 4: one more time. I've got four years I can legally retire.
• 3:34
Speaker 4: But you know, whenever I wake up and I have
• 3:36
Speaker 4: to go to work, I won't check it in. I'll
• 3:37
Speaker 4: hang my whistle up. But until then, I'm just gonna
• 3:39
Speaker 4: keep on doing. I'd probably just down the sideline someday.
• 3:43
Speaker 3: Well, it is great to I mean, I love coaching
• 3:47
Speaker 3: I mean as a business owner and a manager of people,
• 3:51
  Speaker 3: it's I think there's a lot of parallels.
• 3:53
  Speaker 2: I mean a half percent.
• 3:54
Speaker 3: And I know that that's it's the part of my
• 3:57
Speaker 3: job that I get the most out of.
• 3:59
  Speaker 2: I I love to.
• 4:01
Speaker 3: Lead people and help and help them or reach their
• 4:04
Speaker 3: goals and tap into what are they because a lot
• 4:07
Speaker 3: of times people don't really know, and you're hitting it
• 4:10
Speaker 3: around the head, you know, help them direct them. Then
• 4:12
Speaker 3: that is that is the biggest.
• 4:14
Speaker 4: Joy, you know, And I tell you whole time now
• 4:15
Speaker 4: that I've been doing this long. When I first in
• 4:16
Speaker 4: I was all about winning rings and winning trophies, and
• 4:19
Speaker 4: I mean that's still our goal. We're still going to
• 4:21
Speaker 4: try to do that, but now our number one going.
• 4:24
Speaker 4: And as I hired my staff, I've got the best
• 4:25
Speaker 4: staff in Oklahoma. I've never seen this to high school
• 4:27
Speaker 4: staff like this. The school backed me one hundred percent,
• 4:30
Speaker 4: said you do what you got to do. I had
• 4:32
Speaker 4: guys wanted to come here. Guys bought into this community,
• 4:35
Speaker 4: Guys bought into our vision. Here's the number one thing
• 4:38
Speaker 4: I was looking for. Besides their playing ability and their knowledge.
• 4:41
  Speaker 2: All that was.
• 4:42
Speaker 4: That was all good, but a lot of people that
• 4:44
Speaker 4: was how much do you love kids? Why are you
• 4:46
Speaker 4: doing this? Do you really just want to develop kids?
• 4:48
Speaker 4: Because our number one goal is developed great men. That's
• 4:50
Speaker 4: our number one go on our program is build great men.
• 4:53
Speaker 4: Because what I've figured out over these last long years.
• 4:56
Speaker 2: Is if we will keep our goals and our.
• 5:00
Speaker 4: Standards, our core values, and everything directed towards building great
• 5:03
Speaker 4: young men, we're gonna win games.
• 5:05
Speaker 2: It goes hand in hand.
• 5:06
Speaker 4: And it's like you talked about finding what what what
• 5:09
Speaker 4: direction they need to go in, helping him steer that,
• 5:12
Speaker 4: and then helping him pull it out of it, and then.
• 5:14
  Speaker 2: Holding them accountable.
• 5:15
Speaker 4: I mean that is the hard part in some ways,
• 5:18
Speaker 4: and you can't you know, I've I've gotten past the
• 5:21
Speaker 4: phase of being afraid to have the conversation hard conversation,
• 5:25
Speaker 4: or or being afraid to correct somebody when they're wrong,
• 5:28
Speaker 4: especially my coaches too.
• 5:30
Speaker 2: I mean, it doesn't matter if it's my coaches, my players.
• 5:33
Speaker 4: Matter of fact, Coach Daniels, who's been doing a long
• 5:34
Speaker 4: time too, as my defensive coordinator. He we'd had a
• 5:38
Speaker 4: tough day on defense the day before and I'd ripped
• 5:40
Speaker 4: the defense, all the defensive coaches pretty good. And I
• 5:43
Speaker 4: saw his notes. I was in it by his desk
• 5:46
Speaker 4: doing something late and saw his notes to his when
• 5:49
Speaker 4: he was at a defensive staff meeting. I said, you know,
• 5:51
Speaker 4: I've never thought of this in my life, but was
• 5:55
Speaker 4: We are here to model behavior for those young men.
• 5:58
Speaker 2: Learn how to take an ash tune for you too.
• 6:00
  Speaker 2: I don't think it.
• 6:01
Speaker 4: Sounds real, but yeah, he said, it's all right, but
• 6:04
Speaker 4: he said, learn learn how to take that chewing out,
• 6:06
Speaker 4: Learn how to take that correction and take it like
• 6:08
Speaker 4: a man. Don't get your feelings hurt. Don't because we
• 6:11
Speaker 4: don't want our kids to. You know, we tell our
• 6:13
Speaker 4: kids what you need understructive.
• 6:16
Speaker 3: Advice is I mean, I guess it is criticism sometimes,
• 6:20
Speaker 3: but it is not negative. It's about being more positive
• 6:25
Speaker 3: and accomplishing what we're trying to do as a group.
• 6:28
Speaker 3: And you know, that's the great thing about sports is
• 6:31
Speaker 3: you can't do it on your own. You're in football,
• 6:34
Speaker 3: you're you're one of eleven on this on that side
• 6:38
Speaker 3: of the line, and you've got to execute a plan
• 6:42
Speaker 3: of some sort. You can't just go out there and
• 6:44
Speaker 3: wing it. It's not gonna it's not gonna work.
• 6:46
Speaker 4: Very well, right absolutely, And you know in football is
• 6:48
  Speaker 4: such a loud.
• 6:51
  Speaker 2: Emotional physical sport.
• 6:54
Speaker 4: Yeah that sometimes those corrections aren't the same way you
• 6:58
Speaker 4: can do it at the dealership.
• 6:59
  Speaker 1: You can.
• 7:00
Speaker 4: You know, it's gonna be loud, it's gonna be in
• 7:01
Speaker 4: the moment, it's gonna be fast, it's it's in a hurry.
• 7:04
Speaker 4: And then but the biggest part and the thing I'm
• 7:06
Speaker 4: trying to teach them my young coaches that I've learned
• 7:08
Speaker 4: over the years is no matter it doesn't matter how hard.
• 7:11
Speaker 4: You can coach them hard and you can do those things,
• 7:14
Speaker 4: but you got to circle back behind it with an
• 7:16
Speaker 4: arm around the shoulder.
• 7:17
Speaker 2: Hey, do you understand why I corrected? You do I?
• 7:20
Speaker 2: And I think that's one of the biggest things is
• 7:21
Speaker 2: making sure they understand.
• 7:22
Speaker 4: Why we were correcting them, why we were fixing the problem.
• 7:26
Speaker 2: Make sure they not which we were yelling at them,
• 7:28
Speaker 2: just yell at them. Yeah that we you know.
• 7:30
Speaker 4: And then you know, I've got a rule that you
• 7:32
Speaker 4: can never let a kid say lead the day to
• 7:34
Speaker 4: saying one thing positive to him. And so sometimes it's
• 7:38
Speaker 4: it might just be hey, rad, it'll be to get
• 7:41
Speaker 4: better tomorrow because if nothing.
• 7:43
Speaker 2: Went good that day. My managers is.
• 7:45
Speaker 3: You know, five positive things before you're correct them and
• 7:49
Speaker 3: around that just because the truth is, you know people,
• 7:53
Speaker 3: there's a lot of good things and people, and that's
• 7:55
Speaker 3: you know, the people who coach people do naturally gravitate
• 7:59
Speaker 3: people because you want to get the best out of them.
• 8:01
Speaker 3: You see their potential. I think that's probably true of
• 8:04
Speaker 3: you if you've been coaching for.
• 8:06
Speaker 4: So long, it is, you know, And that's that's the thing,
• 8:08
Speaker 4: is that developing those relationships. You know, we got some
• 8:11
Speaker 4: kids that aren't playing football right now because of the past,
• 8:16
Speaker 4: and I don't know what happened, but and they're in basketball,
• 8:19
Speaker 4: they're in baseball. But what it is, I went, I
• 8:21
Speaker 4: didn't bother them when I got here. I didn't, you know,
• 8:24
Speaker 4: I might give them a hey, how come you don't
• 8:25
Speaker 4: play football? You know. And there's some really good athletes
• 8:27
Speaker 4: and other sports that aren't playing football. And so I
• 8:30
Speaker 4: spent more time developing relationships with their coaches, with coach
• 8:34
Speaker 4: Price and with coach Christiansen, with you know, with coach Bashists,
• 8:37
Speaker 4: and trying to develop relationships with these other sports coaches
• 8:39
Speaker 4: so they know they can trust me. I'm not going
• 8:40
Speaker 4: to get them in there and try to stand and
• 8:42
Speaker 4: not let them go back to their board or whatever.
• 8:44
Speaker 4: Make sure we've got a good relationship. And then I
• 8:47
Speaker 4: got them to buying a Summer Pride. So now they're
• 8:49
Speaker 4: me all making it mantory. Their athletes are Summer Pride
• 8:51
Speaker 4: with us. Well, it's all football coaches. So I had
• 8:53
Speaker 4: a meeting with our staff and said, look now, our
• 8:55
Speaker 4: job now is develop relationship with these kids. Don't just
• 8:58
Speaker 4: be hounding them every day about play football player. Develop
• 9:00
Speaker 4: a relationship with this kid. Find out what his batting
• 9:03
Speaker 4: average is, find out why he loves basketball, find out
• 9:06
Speaker 4: why is not playing football, find out, you know, what
• 9:08
Speaker 4: he likes, what he doesn't like, and then let's figure
• 9:11
Speaker 4: out what we can do to get them out to
• 9:12
Speaker 4: play football so we can.
• 9:14
Speaker 3: That's probably really important in a place like Bartlesville. You
• 9:17
Speaker 3: don't have unlimited talent like I mean, I guess said
• 9:22
Speaker 3: large schools like Jinks. It's kind of right, kind of
• 9:25
Speaker 3: it just comes with the territory. You have that reputation,
• 9:28
Speaker 3: you've got the winning history, you've got it attracts people.
• 9:32
Speaker 3: You've got a large population there. Well.
• 9:34
Speaker 4: In the transfer rule, now, yeah, I mean, if you've
• 9:36
Speaker 4: been paying attention to the new transfer rule, it's open portal,
• 9:39
Speaker 4: so you can transfer anywhere you want.
• 9:40
Speaker 2: You don't have to move anymore. You have one free transfer.
• 9:43
Speaker 4: So kids are naturally transferred to Bixby and Jinks and
• 9:47
Speaker 4: Broken Aaron plus they've got. It's not not so much
• 9:50
Speaker 4: that well one of their programs are so great. That
• 9:53
Speaker 4: is a piece, but just a location, you know, being
• 9:55
Speaker 4: right there in Tulsa they've got. We don't have a
• 9:58
Speaker 4: lot of people out here by us, so it's harder
• 10:00
Speaker 4: for a kid if they're not going to move Arnold
• 10:03
Speaker 4: to live in Tulsa, drive every day from Tulsa. That's
• 10:05
  Speaker 4: a little harder.
• 10:06
Speaker 2: So so yeah, we do have to develop our talent.
• 10:08
Speaker 4: And that was you know when when I first accepted
• 10:10
Speaker 4: the job and asked that, I said, what's we've been through?
• 10:14
Speaker 4: We'd sat in a four hour interview. I said, what
• 10:16
Speaker 4: do you what are you expecting that me? What's the
• 10:18
Speaker 4: number one thing you want out of me? He says,
• 10:20
Speaker 4: we got to get our numbers up. We don't have
• 10:22
Speaker 4: six A numbers. They end up less than forty players
• 10:24
Speaker 4: last year, now, you know, and we're at eighty five
• 10:26
Speaker 4: right now, so counting our freshmen, so you know we'll
• 10:30
Speaker 4: be we'll be over one hundred soon, and that's where
• 10:33
Speaker 4: we need to be.
• 10:34
Speaker 2: We need to be.
• 10:35
Speaker 4: We need to be pushing one hundred, not counting freshmen.
• 10:38
Speaker 4: We need to be trying to have thirty per class.
• 10:40
Speaker 4: And that's the number we half just because it's a
• 10:42
Speaker 4: you know, even when I was at the SCOGI, that
• 10:44
Speaker 4: was a big deal in the Scogan. When I was
• 10:45
Speaker 4: the head coach with Scogie, we were always we can
• 10:47
Speaker 4: always match the talent, and there was no.
• 10:50
Speaker 2: Six a two back then. It was just six a one.
• 10:52
Speaker 4: So we had to beat Jinks and Union in Ouasso
• 10:54
Speaker 4: and all those schools, and we could beat most of
• 10:57
Speaker 4: them until we'd get a kid hurt or get this
• 11:01
Speaker 4: kid dinged up, and we just didn't have the depth
• 11:04
Speaker 4: they did and the numbers, and that was the biggest
• 11:06
Speaker 4: fall off. So now six a two is even that
• 11:08
Speaker 4: a little bit. But you look at the move ins
• 11:10
Speaker 4: that Chalk Tall is getting being right there in the
• 11:12
Speaker 4: Oklahoma City area, the move ins that Sand Springs getting,
• 11:15
Speaker 4: the move ins that that still Water is getting even
• 11:18
Speaker 4: I mean, they're The movement in high school football right
• 11:21
Speaker 4: now is crazy. It's the it's the one thing that
• 11:24
Speaker 4: may force me to retirement. You talk, you know, that's
• 11:27
Speaker 4: why Saban got out because the portal and the and
• 11:30
Speaker 4: the NIO and all that, all.
• 11:31
Speaker 3: These changes and are riches high school football that tricking
• 11:35
Speaker 3: and yes there it always dodge football and and really
• 11:38
Speaker 3: at the NFL level also and in all major sports,
• 11:42
Speaker 3: and you know, the whole NIL movement and uh and
• 11:47
Speaker 3: freedom of movement at the college level is really changed things.
• 11:50
Speaker 2: I mean, you guys deal with the same stuff and
• 11:53
Speaker 2: I got it here in high school.
• 11:54
Speaker 4: And I hate it because I mean there's certain times
• 11:56
Speaker 4: I think it's good, but my deal is and like
• 11:58
Speaker 4: I said, our number one goal is great men. Well,
• 12:02
  Speaker 4: if you're having a hard time and you're not everything's
• 12:04
Speaker 4: not going perfect with your wife, you don't just bail
• 12:06
Speaker 4: and go find another wife.
• 12:07
Speaker 2: If your job is not.
• 12:08
Speaker 4: Perfect, you don't just say we I'm just go find
• 12:09
Speaker 4: another job. If everything's not perfectly your kids, you don't
• 12:12
Speaker 4: just kick them to the curb. And so I'll give
• 12:13
Speaker 4: these new kids. And that's being a man.
• 12:15
Speaker 2: But with this what the portal's teaching us, well, if
• 12:18
Speaker 2: everything's not exactly how you want to just bail and
• 12:21
  Speaker 2: go somewhere else.
• 12:21
  Speaker 4: And I absolutely hate it because I think that's that's
• 12:24
Speaker 4: what football and athletics all together around has taught us.
• 12:28
Speaker 2: It's the older guys that taus it's not always right.
• 12:30
Speaker 4: It's ball's not always going to bounce right, but how
• 12:33
Speaker 4: to handle the hard and how to handle adversity.
• 12:35
Speaker 2: And the portal's taking that away.
• 12:37
Speaker 3: And my son's played Division three soccer, so they're a
• 12:40
Speaker 3: little they're a little removed from that at that level,
• 12:43
Speaker 3: but even they have ale there and and there is
• 12:46
Speaker 3: a lot more transferring going on than there there used
• 12:50
Speaker 3: to be, just too a couple of years ago.
• 12:52
Speaker 4: It's made it's so hard to get kids recruited too,
• 12:54
Speaker 4: because now the college is just recruiting out the portal.
• 12:57
Speaker 2: They're not really recruiting high school as much anymore.
• 13:00
Speaker 4: So it's a whole different pathway if you're going to
• 13:02
Speaker 4: play college football now, unless you're unless you can start
• 13:05
Speaker 4: as a freshman. They say, if you can start as
• 13:07
Speaker 4: a freshman, the d Ones will recoup chick. If not,
• 13:09
Speaker 4: you're in go D three or an AI you're and
• 13:11
Speaker 4: go kind of like the Juco route used to be.
• 13:14
Speaker 4: But now it's just go D two or go D three,
• 13:16
Speaker 4: play ball out for two years and get in the
• 13:18
Speaker 4: portal and go kind of like you used to do
• 13:20
Speaker 4: with Juco back in the day.
• 13:22
Speaker 3: But you know, the culture though that you create can
• 13:25
Speaker 3: help kind of attract and keep people there, I would think,
• 13:29
Speaker 3: I mean at the business level, that's something we focus on.
• 13:32
Speaker 3: It's what, you know, if those values are clear, and
• 13:35
Speaker 3: if you can attract people to that to get what
• 13:38
Speaker 3: you're trying to do.
• 13:39
Speaker 2: And I think some.
• 13:40
Speaker 3: Football coaches and programs still lean into that, and you know,
• 13:44
Speaker 3: let's into their constant movement, that trying to hold the
• 13:47
Speaker 3: team together, keep them there for the right reason it is.
• 13:51
Speaker 2: And I think in high school we can still do that.
• 13:53
Speaker 4: And you know, I know that OSU you know, talking
• 13:55
Speaker 4: to Mike Gundhy, that was the problem there. That's where
• 13:58
Speaker 4: he tried to go with it. He tried to stay
• 13:59
Speaker 4: there a well it didn't work. So but you know,
• 14:04
Speaker 4: in high school, you know, and I told that, I said,
• 14:06
Speaker 4: my number one goal because it's not to hit them.
• 14:10
Speaker 2: Now, we we've been blessed.
• 14:12
Speaker 4: We've had four really good move ins. So we've had
• 14:14
Speaker 4: a few. We have not started. We are are we
• 14:18
Speaker 4: are right on the verge of kicking off our NIL program.
• 14:21
Speaker 4: We've been meeting, been trying to figure it out. I'm
• 14:24
Speaker 4: trying to navigate exactly how it's supposed to look in
• 14:26
Speaker 4: high school. But my number one goal is to keep
• 14:30
Speaker 4: our players. That's my number one goal. Keep the kids
• 14:33
Speaker 4: in Bartlestoo in barttles one. Now we'll eventually be trying
• 14:36
Speaker 4: to get some others and hopefully we can get some
• 14:38
Speaker 4: others from other places that want to come play and
• 14:39
Speaker 4: our program gets that point.
• 14:40
Speaker 2: But the first thing we have to do is keep ours.
• 14:43
Speaker 4: Because if you looked on different rosters last year and
• 14:46
Speaker 4: for the last two years, you know, Chase Eves came
• 14:48
Speaker 4: and played for me at POHSCA. He ended up being
• 14:50
Speaker 4: an All stater for me. He was from here. You know,
• 14:52
  Speaker 4: Jerrick Edwards played.
• 14:53
Speaker 2: For me over there.
• 14:54
Speaker 4: He ended up being an All stater for me. The
• 14:56
Speaker 4: kid running back at Muskogian up being an All stater.
• 14:58
Speaker 4: He was the quarter back in collins starting quarterback Collinsville
• 15:01
Speaker 4: is from here, the starting free safety from Owassaw.
• 15:04
Speaker 2: Last year's from here, three kids from there.
• 15:07
Speaker 4: Was nine kids that were from Bartlesville starting on other rosters.
• 15:11
Speaker 4: Well you just put those nine kids back on our roster.
• 15:14
Speaker 4: It changes our team. So so our number one going
• 15:17
Speaker 4: I talked to our coaches is we keep our kids. Now,
• 15:19
Speaker 4: that doesn't mean we're going to I've got three kids
• 15:22
Speaker 4: at do He Right that have gone to Dewey that
• 15:23
Speaker 4: couldn't make it. They didn't want to do it our way.
• 15:27
Speaker 4: It's tough to make it. Our program, the accountability levels high,
• 15:32
Speaker 4: we work out early. We expect you to be there.
• 15:34
Speaker 4: There's no excuses. It's no different than you're not gonna
• 15:37
Speaker 4: let guys have a reason why they don't come to
• 15:39
Speaker 4: work every day or be late every day. Again, trying
• 15:42
Speaker 4: to trying to create and it happens occasionally, but trying
• 15:45
Speaker 4: to create those life skills to create great young men.
• 15:49
Speaker 4: So I've got some that haven't made it, and there
• 15:51
Speaker 4: are other schools and and that's fine, you know. And
• 15:54
Speaker 4: I've told schools I'll sign off on them if it's
• 15:56
Speaker 4: kids gonna be a senior, you know, if they're not
• 15:58
Speaker 4: in recruiting my kids, and it's just a kid that
• 16:00
Speaker 4: didn't make it in our program, man, if he can make.
• 16:02
Speaker 2: It somewhere else and maybe that changes his life, I'll
• 16:04
Speaker 2: sign off. Don't you know. I'm not against the kid.
• 16:07
Speaker 2: I'm just not going to change our standards or how
• 16:10
  Speaker 2: we do things.
• 16:11
Speaker 4: And so we've set a level now in the off
• 16:13
Speaker 4: season that I think everybody's seeing because now summer Pride
• 16:18
  Speaker 4: is hitting.
• 16:19
Speaker 2: We've got all these other sports in with.
• 16:20
Speaker 4: Us, and the other coaches are like, wow, it's impressive
• 16:24
Speaker 4: that your kids are never late.
• 16:25
Speaker 2: Your kids are how they respond.
• 16:27
Speaker 4: You know, we had a spring game a few weeks
• 16:29
Speaker 4: ago and somebody asked me at church on Sunday, had
• 16:32
Speaker 4: that spring game. I'm like, well, you know, I didn't
• 16:35
Speaker 4: think it went really well, but you know, we weren't
• 16:38
Speaker 4: really ready to do what we tried to do.
• 16:39
Speaker 2: We've gotten numbers. We don't have no players, if that
• 16:43
  Speaker 2: makes sense.
• 16:43
Speaker 4: We had some guys still when we tried to split
• 16:45
Speaker 4: teams evily, but we had a couple of kids starting
• 16:47
Speaker 4: that aren't ready yet, and so they were going against
• 16:50
Speaker 4: somebody that is so it's just a total mismatch, and
• 16:52
Speaker 4: so we don't have a full too deep where we
• 16:55
Speaker 4: could do that yet. But we tried to do anyway.
• 16:57
Speaker 2: But everybody here was thrilled.
• 16:58
Speaker 4: I thought it was the greatest thing they've seen, you
• 17:01
Speaker 4: know that we had a great crowd, the kids, The
• 17:04
Speaker 4: spirit was good on the field. There was nobody arguing
• 17:06
Speaker 4: with each other. The kids are all playing hard, nobody,
• 17:09
Speaker 4: nobody arguing with coaches, just the whole culture piece that
• 17:12
Speaker 4: we're working on. Everybody saw that which at the end
• 17:17
Speaker 4: that that will transfer to wins.
• 17:18
Speaker 3: So I mean, I think the community loves that, and
• 17:21
Speaker 3: so I get that first to support the youth of
• 17:25
Speaker 3: this town. That's why big time every aspect, whether you know,
• 17:28
Speaker 3: whether you're into sports or in any sport you know,
• 17:32
Speaker 3: or or a and stuff or the art.
• 17:35
Speaker 4: State, Bartltoo is the most supportive community I've ever been around,
• 17:39
Speaker 4: and it's the greatest guy. That's why I tell people
• 17:41
Speaker 4: all the time, there's five things to win. You gotta
• 17:43
Speaker 4: good players, you gotta have great coaches. You got to
• 17:45
Speaker 4: have an administration, which our administration has been taught notch doing
• 17:48
Speaker 4: whatever we can to try to help these kids. You
• 17:51
Speaker 4: got parents that are and we've worked on that. We're
• 17:53
Speaker 4: getting our parents lined the right way. And but you
• 17:56
Speaker 4: gotta have a community that's willing to support because it's
• 18:00
Speaker 4: it costs a lot of money to win football.
• 18:03
Speaker 2: I mean, it just does. I mean we're going to
• 18:05
Speaker 2: probably spend twoor three hundred thousand dollars this year.
• 18:07
Speaker 4: Just on equipment, uniforms, eating, just the things you have
• 18:11
Speaker 4: to do to compete, and I see those five things.
• 18:14
Speaker 4: You can't tell me if there's a place around better
• 18:17
Speaker 4: than Bartlesville because there's not a community. Would you rather
• 18:19
Speaker 4: building Bartlesville or Sand Springs? Come on now, punk city
• 18:21
Speaker 4: of Bartlesville. I mean, where there's no place better to
• 18:24
Speaker 4: live than Bartlesville. Our school district is better than all
• 18:28
Speaker 4: all the ones we compete against. You know, we've got
• 18:30
Speaker 4: a coaching staff that's nowhere, is way above anybody else's,
• 18:34
Speaker 4: you know, and now we're getting players and parents. Hey,
• 18:36
Speaker 4: this is going to be the spot. This is going
• 18:38
Speaker 4: to be the next big thing because.
• 18:40
Speaker 3: Everybody's bought like, you've got all the pieces and we
• 18:43
Speaker 3: do this in your What is your outlook for this season? Yeah?
• 18:47
Speaker 2: Our goal right now?
• 18:47
Speaker 4: And so it's the thing I said after the guy
• 18:49
Speaker 4: asked me that at church, I said, you knows, what
• 18:52
Speaker 4: I got to realize right now is all what we
• 18:54
Speaker 4: have to do is be better today than we were yesterday.
• 18:57
Speaker 4: So that's our goal right now. So we had a really,
• 18:59
Speaker 4: really a great workout today. We finished in the rain
• 19:02
Speaker 4: outside it's just starting to rain, went into the weight room.
• 19:05
Speaker 2: And the school came in and put it.
• 19:07
Speaker 4: We put a new sound system in the in the
• 19:08
Speaker 4: weight room and in the endoor, so it was rocking
• 19:11
Speaker 4: and the kids were in there and it was it
• 19:13
Speaker 4: was awesome. I mean they were getting after it. So
• 19:16
Speaker 4: today was better than yesterday. So we accomplished our goal today.
• 19:19
Speaker 4: You know, tomorrow we're going to a Passing the League
• 19:21
  Speaker 4: tournament at Bixby.
• 19:22
  Speaker 2: Uh.
• 19:23
Speaker 4: Now we're in against Bixby Broken Arrow. We're against some scorpions.
• 19:27
Speaker 4: So I don't know how many games will win. But
• 19:29
Speaker 4: I'm not I told our kids, and I'm worried about that.
• 19:31
Speaker 4: Are we better than we weren't passing League on Tuesday?
• 19:33
Speaker 4: Did we not have drop balls? Did we run our
• 19:35
Speaker 4: routes right? Did we play full speed on defense? Did
• 19:38
Speaker 4: we get hands like us?
• 19:40
Speaker 2: To see how the teams? So as far as the
• 19:43
Speaker 2: record goes next year, I have no clue. I'm not
• 19:44
Speaker 2: even worried about the record.
• 19:46
Speaker 4: I want to see are we sticking to our core values,
• 19:48
Speaker 4: which are our mantras team, which is tempo.
• 19:51
Speaker 2: We want to do everything with a sense of urgency.
• 19:52
Speaker 4: Now you're gonna watch us we play fast because that's
• 19:55
Speaker 4: our belief is we can't control how big, fast, or
• 19:58
Speaker 4: strong we'll be compared to the team. We can get better,
• 20:02
Speaker 4: but we don't know when necessarily match up. But we
• 20:04
Speaker 4: can control our shape and we can be in better shape.
• 20:06
  Speaker 4: They so we're.
• 20:07
Speaker 2: Gonna play fast, and we want to do everything fast.
• 20:09
Speaker 4: We want to, I said, we talk fast, we eat fast,
• 20:11
Speaker 4: we move fast, we get lined up fast, we do
• 20:14
Speaker 4: our homework fast, We do everything fast.
• 20:16
Speaker 2: So we want a tempo.
• 20:17
Speaker 4: We want to give great effort, have great attitudes, and
• 20:20
Speaker 4: do everything with positive attitude. That's a big thing for me.
• 20:22
Speaker 4: You talked about positive attitude earlier. That's huge for me.
• 20:25
Speaker 4: And it would be mentally tough. The biggest thing I
• 20:27
Speaker 4: saw in film last year was they would be in games.
• 20:31
Speaker 4: Everything would be fine and one bad thing would happen
• 20:35
Speaker 4: and everything would just go to heck and it would
• 20:37
Speaker 4: just go Everything would turn bad, it would go straight downhill.
• 20:40
Speaker 2: So I said, we got to learn how to go
• 20:41
Speaker 2: one and zero. Forget about that play. Let's be great
• 20:43
Speaker 2: on this play and move on.
• 20:45
Speaker 4: So the mental toughness piece is the part we've been
• 20:48
Speaker 4: working hard on. But if those four things are what
• 20:52
Speaker 4: we're pushing for, and the beauty of those four things
• 20:54
Speaker 4: is none of them take any talent, None of them.
• 20:57
Speaker 4: You don't have to be six or five to do
• 20:58
Speaker 4: any of those things. You don't have to weigh a
• 21:00
Speaker 4: certain amount, you don't have to bench presser, you don't
• 21:02
Speaker 4: have to run a certain forty. Every kid out there
• 21:04
Speaker 4: can do that, every coach out there can do that.
• 21:07
Speaker 4: So that's the things we're pushing forward, and we're gonna
• 21:10
Speaker 4: look to get better at those things every day, and
• 21:11
Speaker 4: I know they will transform into wins. How many of
• 21:14
  Speaker 4: this first year, I don't know, but I know we're
• 21:15
Speaker 4: on the right track and it's going to keep pushing forward.
• 21:18
  Speaker 2: So there are.
• 21:19
Speaker 3: Thirty four years, you've built some programs, you've kind of
• 21:22
Speaker 3: started like this before, and what draws.
• 21:27
Speaker 2: You to that, you know what?
• 21:28
Speaker 4: It's kind of become my mo I guess I think
• 21:33
Speaker 4: starting off, you know, I played at Enion High School
• 21:36
Speaker 4: and we got there.
• 21:37
  Speaker 2: We weren't great.
• 21:38
Speaker 4: Coach Lancaster and he's my mentor, coach Ron Lancash Hall
• 21:41
  Speaker 4: of Fame, and.
• 21:42
Speaker 2: He came in and turned around. We won state my
• 21:44
  Speaker 2: junior year.
• 21:45
Speaker 4: Shouldn't want to say beat Booker t the ranked three
• 21:47
Speaker 4: in the nation and we beat him.
• 21:48
Speaker 2: And then I've going to college.
• 21:50
Speaker 4: I play at Kansas State, worst football program, in the
• 21:53
Speaker 4: history of sports, and coach Bill Snyder comes in my
• 21:57
Speaker 4: other mentor, so I've got some great mentors, and he
• 22:00
Speaker 4: showed me how to turn a program around. And then
• 22:02
Speaker 4: when I got started, you know, the first job out
• 22:04
Speaker 4: of college, coach Lancaster just got in the Jinks job,
• 22:06
Speaker 4: and they called me, we don't think that about that
• 22:08
Speaker 4: being a turnaround job.
• 22:09
Speaker 2: But honestly, if you go back and look at nineteen
• 22:11
Speaker 2: ninety two, in the.
• 22:12
Speaker 4: Years before, they'd been seven and four, they'd been you know,
• 22:15
Speaker 4: they'd been in the playoffs, but not dominant. He flipped
• 22:18
Speaker 4: that to where it is what it is now, and
• 22:20
Speaker 4: then I ended up I ended up being at Mascogee
• 22:22
Speaker 4: was my first head coaching job, and had they'd been
• 22:25
Speaker 4: bad and we ended up making going the quarterfinal semis
• 22:27
Speaker 4: every year again being in six A one made a.
• 22:29
Speaker 2: Little tough, but turned that program around.
• 22:32
Speaker 4: Then went to Logus Grove took that job and they
• 22:34
Speaker 4: hadn't won a game in two years, and we Mason
• 22:38
Speaker 4: Fine came in as a freshman and now he's back
• 22:41
Speaker 4: as my quarterback coach, an offensive coordinator.
• 22:43
Speaker 2: Jason Pertle mar super coach.
• 22:45
Speaker 4: Those two kids came they were a freshmen We turned
• 22:47
Speaker 4: that program around, winning, went to the playoffs every year,
• 22:50
Speaker 4: went to Semis twice, and then.
• 22:55
Speaker 2: Really probably would have known. I was super happy at
• 22:56
Speaker 2: Logus Grave. I wasn't looking in the lead.
• 22:57
Speaker 4: The Huska called and my brother and sister graduatdrom Hust
• 23:00
Speaker 4: and my parents had moved to Phust when I was
• 23:02
Speaker 4: in college, and so I had a little background there,
• 23:04
Speaker 4: and they called and said, hey, we need to do
• 23:06
Speaker 4: something here. We you know, we were zero to ten
• 23:08
Speaker 4: this year. We've only got fourteen kids out for football
• 23:11
Speaker 4: or the programs in shambles. But we got some people
• 23:13
Speaker 4: behind it that really wanted to be good, you know.
• 23:15
Speaker 4: And you had a great administration. You had the Drummonds,
• 23:17
Speaker 4: you had some the reads, some people that really wanted
• 23:19
Speaker 4: the program to get fixed now. And my top assistant
• 23:22
Speaker 4: at the Logus Grove had been interviewing for head coaching
• 23:25
Speaker 4: jobs but couldn't get one because he had no head
• 23:26
Speaker 4: coaching experience. And so I said, you know what, it's
• 23:29
Speaker 4: in my contract that you're the next head coach here.
• 23:30
Speaker 4: So I'll go take another job and you can have
• 23:33
Speaker 4: this one. And he went to the Semis next year.
• 23:35
Speaker 4: We left him on the Lodus stack and his great coach,
• 23:38
Speaker 4: David Levans. So then I went to Pahuska and we
• 23:42
Speaker 4: made the playoffs. That went to the playoffs all eight years,
• 23:44
Speaker 4: been the Semis twice quarters three times. You know, we
• 23:48
Speaker 4: never won one as a head coach. And I was
• 23:51
Speaker 4: talking to some of the other day, I said, but
• 23:52
Speaker 4: the thing people need to look at is where the
• 23:54
Speaker 4: program is when we started, where we got it to
• 23:58
Speaker 4: to where we're consistently in the comversation, you just haven't
• 24:01
Speaker 4: quite had the group to push over.
• 24:04
Speaker 2: Now. We had a couple of plus I think we
• 24:05
Speaker 2: had a chance to win it. And you know, when
• 24:07
Speaker 2: you get that far, when you get.
• 24:08
Speaker 4: To the Semis, the finals, you got either you got
• 24:12
Speaker 4: to stay healthy and you got to catch a lucky
• 24:14
Speaker 4: break somewhere. You got to catch a break somewhere in
• 24:16
Speaker 4: order to get there. Like last year, we made it
• 24:18
Speaker 4: the Semis and we were probably not even a quarter
• 24:21
Speaker 4: final team, but we stayed pretty healthy. We caught some
• 24:25
Speaker 4: breaks here and there, you know, and we had a
• 24:27
Speaker 4: great group of kids that just bought in. And we
• 24:30
Speaker 4: didn't any d one kids or any but just a
• 24:32
Speaker 4: great group of kids. So, you know, I do have
• 24:36
Speaker 4: a system. We've got a formula of how we do it.
• 24:39
Speaker 1: We're going to be having another alert from the National
• 24:41
Speaker 1: Weather Service right here on K one to one you trust,
• 24:44
Speaker 1: and we are following a line of showers and thunderstorms
• 24:48
Speaker 1: that are hugging the Yoklahoma Kansas city line.
• 24:50
Speaker 2: So let's take it out to the National Weather Service.
• 24:56
Speaker 1: And now we're back with our regular programming right here
• 24:59
Speaker 1: on K one. Once again, we do you have the
• 25:00
Speaker 1: street thunderstorm morning up. We're parts of Washington County, the
• 25:04
Speaker 1: northwestern part and also the northeastern part of Och County
• 25:08
Speaker 1: will be watching that thunderstore themself. Now back to car
• 25:11
Speaker 1: talk with Brad Dunches.
• 25:13
Speaker 3: Well, we are just about out of time. Is there
• 25:16
Speaker 3: anything you need from the community Now, I know you've
• 25:20
Speaker 3: talked about needing the resources. Where are you in that
• 25:24
Speaker 3: and what is it.
• 25:24
Speaker 2: That we can do to help.
• 25:26
Speaker 4: So we're going to really start our marketing package with
• 25:29
Speaker 4: the Booster clubs, so they'll be Boosh club members reaching
• 25:31
Speaker 4: out to people. I've reworked the whole marketing pack, so
• 25:33
Speaker 4: I want to make sure people are getting something for
• 25:36
  Speaker 4: their money.
• 25:37
Speaker 2: And one we're going to put a.
• 25:39
Speaker 4: Good product on the field that's going to go towards
• 25:40
Speaker 4: those kids, but make sure they're getting something out of
• 25:43
Speaker 4: it too. So we're going to utilize that jumbo tron
• 25:45
Speaker 4: a lot more than it has been. We're gonna do
• 25:47
Speaker 4: some good things. We're gonna if you want to be
• 25:48
Speaker 4: a game night sponsor, you get to have twenty people
• 25:51
Speaker 4: come on the field for pregame and then go up
• 25:53
Speaker 4: and have dinner up in the luxury box.
• 25:55
Speaker 2: Do that, plus keep ten ten sideline.
• 25:57
Speaker 4: Passes too, And so we're gonna do some different things
• 26:00
Speaker 4: to try to involve. The main thing is just get
• 26:02
Speaker 4: out and support. Just come to the games. I'm cheerious
• 26:04
Speaker 4: on you know. Hopefully we can get them to stay
• 26:07
Speaker 4: past half time. Cause I will say this watching film,
• 26:10
Speaker 4: even the games when they were over and they weren't
• 26:13
Speaker 4: supposed to win that game, I would look at the
• 26:15
Speaker 4: film would show the crowd, and the crowd be full
• 26:17
Speaker 4: at started the game. Martinsville is awesome. So we're gonna
• 26:20
Speaker 4: do our job. We're gonna do our piece to keep
• 26:22
Speaker 4: you there past halftime because they would all leave and
• 26:24
Speaker 4: have to look at the second half.
• 26:25
Speaker 2: There's no bad in the stands.
• 26:26
Speaker 4: But but that's not I've always said coach Sneider always
• 26:29
Speaker 4: said this is a great one. I hope I got
• 26:30
Speaker 4: time to say the story, but he said, he said,
• 26:32
Speaker 4: you know it's We went and complained at case. Stay back, man.
• 26:34
Speaker 4: We're still not having good crowd. You know, we're working hard.
• 26:37
Speaker 4: We want a game or two. And he goes, look,
• 26:39
Speaker 4: I mean I asked him. He said, if you heard
• 26:41
Speaker 4: a movie downtown was really bad, would you pay five
• 26:42
Speaker 4: bucks to go watch it?
• 26:44
Speaker 2: And we said no, wouldn't. He said, well, you might, right,
• 26:46
  Speaker 2: just curiosity might.
• 26:47
Speaker 4: He goes, but if you went and watch it it
• 26:49
Speaker 4: was really bad, would you pay five bucks to go
• 26:51
  Speaker 4: watch it again?
• 26:52
Speaker 2: And we said no. He goes, well, didn't play better.
• 26:55
Speaker 4: So we're going to try to do our part too
• 26:57
Speaker 4: to keep you there, keep keeping there, and Bartlesviille proud
• 27:00
Speaker 4: of this program. But I will say the culture and
• 27:02
Speaker 4: what they see on the field will make Bartlesfield proud.
• 27:05
  Speaker 2: Awesome.
• 27:06
