- 1:09Mike Marrs: Yeah, the last two weeks for sure.
- 1:11Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 1:11Don Armstrong: And then a a week back and then a week out.
- 1:14Don Armstrong: And by the way, I want to say that the tailpipes and tacos thing, remember it was supposed to rain last Saturday?
- 1:22Don Armstrong: And it didn't.
- 1:24Don Armstrong: And uh the event turned out to be great.
- 1:28Don Armstrong: The parking lot wasn't overfilled, but it was filled to the max.
- 1:32Don Armstrong: All the parking spaces had cars in it.
- 1:34Don Armstrong: It was great.
- 1:35Don Armstrong: So if you're listening and you were there last weekend, thank you very much for showing up.
- 1:39Don Armstrong: It was a great event.
- 1:40Don Armstrong: Uh the Easter Bunny made his appearance, and lots of kids with the kids' cars.
- 1:44Jeff Dziekan: The pedal giant colored egg walking around.
- 1:47Don Armstrong: And don't forget the Easter Bunny.
- 1:48Jeff Dziekan: The Easter Bunny was there.
- 1:50Don Armstrong: So it's all very good, and thank you very much for showing up.
- 1:53Don Armstrong: Um I guess our next remote, Mr.
- 1:54Don Armstrong: Mars, is going to be up in Grandberry.
- 1:57Mike Marrs: It is.
- 1:58Mike Marrs: We've got a couple uh maybe come in between now and then, but uh we're still negotiating on that.
- 2:02Mike Marrs: But Grandbury is our next target.
- 2:04SPEAKER_01: That's good, yeah.
- 2:05Don Armstrong: That's the Lone Star Street Rod Association event up in Grandbury.
- 2:09Jeff Dziekan: And that's a good point.
- 2:10Jeff Dziekan: So if you're out there listening and you do have any bets and you need us to show up, give it, give Mike a call.
- 2:15Jeff Dziekan: Reach out to Mike and he'll set it up and we'll be there.
- 2:18Don Armstrong: Yeah, but if you don't want to talk to him, and I don't blame you, um, then just uh email email Mars at InrealTime.com.
- 2:25Don Armstrong: By the way, you sent it to Mike at In Real Time.
- 2:27Don Armstrong: Send it to Mike at InReal Time.
- 2:29Don Armstrong: No, but there is no Mike at In Real Time.
- 2:31Don Armstrong: It is Mars.
- 2:32Jeff Dziekan: Mars, okay.
- 2:33Jeff Dziekan: Well, we didn't tell him, but we changed the I think that Mars is fixing it now, so he will now get that.
- 2:38Jeff Dziekan: Okay.
- 2:39Jeff Dziekan: See, when I plug it in my computer, I just hit M and it pops up, it's not already paying attention.
- 2:43Jeff Dziekan: Of course not.
- 2:44Jeff Dziekan: No.
- 2:45Jeff Dziekan: It's all it's all good.
- 2:46Jeff Dziekan: What?
- 2:47Mike Marrs: Hello?
- 2:48Mike Marrs: Okay.
- 2:48Don Armstrong: So you guys ready for the story of the week?
- 2:53Don Armstrong: This is automotive news, and I thought, you know what, we've really never talked about the crisis in Iran when it comes to oil.
- 3:02Don Armstrong: And uh oil, of course, turns into gasoline once they refine it.
- 3:06Don Armstrong: So oil prices dropped April 8th after President Trump announced a ceasefire with Iran, but the national average price of gasoline remained above four dollars a gallon uh according to AAA.
- 3:20Don Armstrong: As that dichotomy illustrates, while the price of crude oil and gasoline are closely linked, there is more to the story than a one-on-one relationship, a complex give and take section between supply and demand, politics, supply chain, geography, and other factors determines what consumers pay at the point.
- 3:42Don Armstrong: The drivers are still adapting to a more than 20% increase in the price of gas from one month ago, according to data from AAA.
- 3:51Don Armstrong: Iran's chokehold on the Strait of Hormos drove the price like drove the price height.
- 3:57Don Armstrong: Daily traffic through the strait normally carries more than 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas.
- 4:04Don Armstrong: After the US and Israel attacked Iran on February 28th, Iran blocked tankers from proceeding through, driving up the price of oil and other commodities.
- 4:15Don Armstrong: So here's how the disruption influenced the price of gas.
- 4:19Don Armstrong: Crude oil is raw, unprocessed, and liquid petroleum pumped out of the ground at oil wells.
- 4:25Don Armstrong: The primary ingredient is crude oil is microscopic and marine organisms that capture the sunlight via photosynthesis.
- 4:34Don Armstrong: And if it's too deep for you, then you can look all that up.
- 4:38Don Armstrong: There are two main components that drive global oil prices.
- 4:42Don Armstrong: There's a fellow named Maximin, who works with Stanford University Center for Fuels of the Future.
- 4:50Don Armstrong: The first is a fundamental supply and demand balance.
- 4:53Don Armstrong: How much oil are institutions producing, and how much oil are people consuming?
- 4:58Don Armstrong: The U.S.
- 4:59Don Armstrong: and OPEC are two significant influences because they produce the bulk of the world's oil supply.
- 5:05Don Armstrong: Geopolitical events and weather can also impact the global supply.
- 5:10Don Armstrong: The U.S.
- 5:10Don Armstrong: uses two main benchmarks.
- 5:13Don Armstrong: Rent and crude is the global standard, and West Texas Intermediate is the main U.S.
- 5:20Don Armstrong: benchmark.
- 5:21Don Armstrong: So why do different gas stations have different prices?
- 5:24Don Armstrong: The price of crude oil makes up about 50% of the price of gasoline.
- 5:28Don Armstrong: Areas of the country are starting with different crude prices that vary based on the benchmark.
- 5:35Don Armstrong: Another quarter of the price of gas is determined by the cost of refining it.
- 5:40Don Armstrong: Refining costs in different amounts in different states.
- 5:45Don Armstrong: California has strict environmental requirements that cost more.
- 5:50Don Armstrong: The stringency of the regulations there has prompted oil companies to idle refineries over the past couple of years.
- 5:57Don Armstrong: People are sick and tired of trying to deal with the Californians, according to Eric Smith, Associate Director of Tulane Energy Institute.
- 6:05Don Armstrong: They're the single biggest source of heavy oil in the United States, and they don't want to produce it.
- 6:11Don Armstrong: The remainder of the cost to consumers is determined by federal and state taxes, distribution, marketing, and retail.
- 6:19Don Armstrong: And this further explains why different states and even different gas stations within the same area have different prices.
- 6:26Don Armstrong: Alaska has the lowest gas tax at about nine cents a gallon.
- 6:31Don Armstrong: California has the highest at about 71 cents per gallon.
- 6:36Don Armstrong: In response to the higher gas prices, because of the war, the EPA is waiving the summer fuel requirement temporarily.
- 6:43Don Armstrong: When will gas prices come down?
- 6:45Don Armstrong: Even if the ceasefire turns into a long-term peace, the price of gasoline will likely remain high.
- 6:51Don Armstrong: It takes about a month for crude oil to become gasoline, assuming the oil is not shuttled into storage, such as our strategic petroleum reserve, according to Smith.
- 7:02Don Armstrong: Plus, the logistics of oil production, much like those governing the auto industry, take a while to unwind and start to back up.
- 7:12Don Armstrong: The adrenaline and that part of the price of crude also needs to settle on its own set.
- 7:19Don Armstrong: The market will wait to see how the disruption has practically impacted the fundamentals of supply and demand.
- 7:28Don Armstrong: After the gas price shock driven by Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, it took about ten months for prices to return to pre-war levels.
- 7:39Don Armstrong: There's so many factors involved.
- 7:41Don Armstrong: Granted, the Strait of Hormuz is a big, ugly thing, and it does affect the price of gasoline globally.
- 7:48Don Armstrong: It's only 20% as far as the amount that is used uh globally, but the 20% that we use.
- 7:57Don Armstrong: 20% globally that comes through the Strait of Hormuz.
- 8:00Don Armstrong: That's the global oil supply is 20% that comes through the Strait of the Strait of Hormuz.
- 8:06Mike Marrs: Yeah, we don't use any of that oil per se here.
- 8:10Mike Marrs: It's the rest of the world that gets more of the impact coming through there.
- 8:14Don Armstrong: But we also use global oil supply.
- 8:17Don Armstrong: Anyway, one way or the other, it doesn't necessarily have to turn into gasoline.
- 8:23Mike Marrs: No, no, but it's the market, like you say, you're right.
- 8:26Mike Marrs: The global market, regardless of who's using it, that's that's what drives it.
- 8:31Don Armstrong: Correct.
- 8:31Don Armstrong: And remember, oil makes up stuff that you wouldn't even believe.
- 8:38Don Armstrong: Did you know that the oil that comes out of the ground, parts of that actually go into women's makeup.
- 8:45Don Armstrong: On men's makeup, I feel so inclined.
- 8:48Don Armstrong: But there are so many different things.
- 8:51Don Armstrong: Plastics.
- 8:52Don Armstrong: Oil.
- 8:53Don Armstrong: Um there is a and I I learned this through narrations and stuff that I've done in the past.
- 9:00Don Armstrong: There are these things called pellets that refineries make, and they are turned into all sorts of things.
- 9:09Don Armstrong: Let's just take a milk jug.
- 9:11Don Armstrong: You know how thin a milk jug is?
- 9:13Don Armstrong: You know the color of it.
- 9:14Don Armstrong: Well, those pellets are about that color.
- 9:16Don Armstrong: So I don't know how many pellets it takes to make a milk jug, but a milk jug is made from oil.
- 9:23Don Armstrong: So all of this stuff is combined, and yes, it all affects the price of gasoline.
- 9:30Don Armstrong: How much is readily available as far as petroleum products is available in the marketplace.
- 9:38Don Armstrong: If there's not a lot of available, oil refiners are going to make more of it.
- 9:44Don Armstrong: Some of it, they'll some of the supply of the oil that's used to take that will also be used to make gasoline.
- 9:54Don Armstrong: So that's where you get these variations in gasoline prices.
- 9:58Don Armstrong: It's a very general oversight on my part.
- 10:01Don Armstrong: I understand that.
- 10:04Don Armstrong: Yes, you do.
- 10:05Don Armstrong: Well, but cook it is a general day a lot a lot of it is vegetable oil, but yes.
- 10:11Mike Marrs: But like you say, the the general oversight you're talking about is really how it works, because they're looking at the global market.
- 10:18Mike Marrs: We don't have per se, literally, in our refineries and in the storage tanks, there's not a shortage of oil.
- 10:25Mike Marrs: But the world supply, that 20% that goes to Europe and all of them, like you said, that's what's impacting it.
- 10:31Mike Marrs: So everybody looks at it and says, Oh, the world needs to go up in prices on oil.
- 10:37Mike Marrs: You know, it doesn't really get down to our local anymore.
- 10:40Jeff Dziekan: Well, at the beginning of the story, he said OPEC.
- 10:42Jeff Dziekan: OPEC is part of it as well.
- 10:44Jeff Dziekan: Now, back in the 70s when we had to downsize our vehicles, is because OPEC was in charge.
- 10:50Jeff Dziekan: We were we weren't drilling on our own backyard.
- 10:53Jeff Dziekan: So we were we were uh dependent.
- 10:57Jeff Dziekan: Dependent, yes, or we were slave to the OPEC uh decisions, and that's why we went to uh the oil crisis and gang Wednesday and all of those things.
- 11:06Mike Marrs: Absolutely.
- 11:07Mike Marrs: And and yes, we now we now export some oil.
- 11:11Mike Marrs: Exactly.
- 11:12Mike Marrs: And and we could do more if we really chose to, but we don't.
- 11:16Jeff Dziekan: What's ever happened to the Canadian pipeline that Biden shut up?
- 11:19Jeff Dziekan: It's still there.
- 11:20Jeff Dziekan: Oh no, the one that uh he didn't build or they didn't build?
- 11:23Don Armstrong: Well it was it was built mostly.
- 11:25Jeff Dziekan: I actually have a friend of mine that was in a band that I played with.
- 11:29Jeff Dziekan: He was actually on that project.
- 11:31Jeff Dziekan: He's up in Alaska now.
- 11:32Jeff Dziekan: He's living up there because he was started doing that pipeline from Canada through the Dakotas and all that area.
- 11:40Jeff Dziekan: Uh and then that was all shuttered, so he moved to Alaska to actually work on other people.
- 11:46Jeff Dziekan: Great guy, fantastic musician, great voice, but he does what he does.
- 11:51Jeff Dziekan: And he's probably making a lot more money than he is by playing event.
- 11:55Jeff Dziekan: Well, maybe he'd be doing other stuff.
- 11:58Jeff Dziekan: Come on.
- 12:00Jeff Dziekan: You don't make money in a band, you know that.
- 12:02Jeff Dziekan: Yes.
- 12:02Jeff Dziekan: Well, I don't.
- 12:03Don Armstrong: You do.
- 12:06Don Armstrong: So I guess that the the bottom line is that hang tight.
- 12:13Don Armstrong: Yes, the price of gas.
- 12:14Don Armstrong: Oh my god, premium gasoline for the Corvette.
- 12:17Don Armstrong: Now, I don't have to put premium gas in the Corvette.
- 12:20Don Armstrong: It'll retard the timing and back off of the horsepower and all that sort of stuff automatically through its computer.
- 12:27Don Armstrong: But uh price of uh premium gasoline, five dollars and something.
- 12:34Jeff Dziekan: We need to reach out to Jack D.
- 12:35Don Armstrong: Rat out in uh yeah, we haven't talked to him in a while.
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Have you talked to him, Martin?
- 12:39Mike Marrs: He's been he's been traveling and stuff.
- 12:41Mike Marrs: I think he's gonna be on the 18th.
- 12:42Mike Marrs: I think it's uh yeah, that's next week.
- 12:44Mike Marrs: He'll be here.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Okay, there you go.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Well, it's time.
- 12:48SPEAKER_01: Send him gas money.
- 12:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he definitely needs uh needs to come to Texas.
- 12:56Mike Marrs: Well, she doesn't live here anymore.
- 12:57Mike Marrs: She's there, and that's where he's been for the last couple of weeks up in Northern California where she is.
- 13:02Mike Marrs: You know, she's more important than us for some reason.
- 13:05Mike Marrs: Yes.
- 13:06unknown: Okay.
- 13:07Jeff Dziekan: Oh, she graduated.
- 13:09Mike Marrs: Graduated, got married, and she got married too?
- 13:14Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:15Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, because she got married, and but she was going to school.
- 13:17Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 13:18Jeff Dziekan: But we'll find out next week.
- 13:19Jeff Dziekan: All right.
- 13:20Don Armstrong: Well, at any rate, to wrap this up, it's very easy for somebody to say, oh, straight up hormones, that's the big problem.
- 13:27Don Armstrong: Well, it's part of the problem, but it's not the problem.
- 13:30Don Armstrong: And uh I think that uh the really the the answer is going to be hopefully this weekend, when our vice president is supposedly, I think today, passing to a meeting with uh all of the people that are important that have a say in all of this, that they're going to finally put a cap on all of it and say, okay, we'll do it this way.
- 13:53Don Armstrong: And that I think will stabilize a lot of things.
- 13:58Don Armstrong: Where's that in wherever they're meeting okay?
- 14:00Mike Marrs: Oh, I think that's I think it's Pakistan, yeah.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Well, okay.
- 14:06Mike Marrs: I uh I'm not sure what kind of connections they have over there, but yeah, okay.
- 14:11Jeff Dziekan: Well, they they talk funny.
- 14:13Jeff Dziekan: I I noticed what they're showing how all the dignitaries were going in there.
- 14:18Jeff Dziekan: There's a lot of motorcycles.
- 14:20Jeff Dziekan: There's a lot of like Honda 170s over there that they all ride around.
- 14:26Jeff Dziekan: They probably have some of those too, but they're just small little motorcycles that they ride around.
- 14:30Mike Marrs: I was looking, and there is there's a whole lot of them over there, but there's one brand that's making they're trying to come into America, but they can't get past the crash test.
- 14:37Mike Marrs: But they use them for taxis.
- 14:39Mike Marrs: They have the long seats on them, and they're actually motorcycle taxis.
- 14:43Jeff Dziekan: And they have people hanging off them like the people on a motorcycle.
- 14:50Jeff Dziekan: Well, they invented they they took that idea for Vegas and now it's a pedal bar.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: Where the pedal, everybody pedals, and the car was not settling anything up on the break.
- 15:03Mike Marrs: Yes, sir.
- 15:04Mike Marrs: I could see you on one of those.
- 15:06Mike Marrs: I was looking at a no, I was looking at like Oh, pedal bar?
- 15:11Mike Marrs: That's too much work.
- 15:13Don Armstrong: That's what I'm saying.
- 15:14Don Armstrong: Not if you're steering.
- 15:16Don Armstrong: Yeah, yeah, you're just steering.
- 15:20Don Armstrong: After you've been drinking half the day.
- 15:22Don Armstrong: And so you just steering.
- 15:23Mike Marrs: Well, no, you know, you can't you cannot drink all day if you don't start in the morning.
- 15:27Mike Marrs: That's all I can tell you.
- 15:29Don Armstrong: See, you know, you brought something to the table here that I think is worth discussion at another time.
- 15:34Don Armstrong: What do you think?
- 15:35Mike Marrs: I still think so.
- 15:36Mike Marrs: Like five o'clock this afternoon, maybe?
- 15:39Jeff Dziekan: Or the uh the boats in San Antonio in the river walking.
- 15:42Jeff Dziekan: I believe you can have a cocktail on there.
- 15:44Jeff Dziekan: Oh yeah.
- 15:46Jeff Dziekan: You can.
- 15:46Don Armstrong: But you can't drive it.
- 15:48Jeff Dziekan: No, no, they don't let you drive it.
- 15:50Don Armstrong: Can you imagine something like that?
- 15:52Don Armstrong: I think they should actually have some sort of motorboat races on the on the river.
- 15:57Jeff Dziekan: But they do tell stories of all the people that fall in during certain events like the like the lighting ceremonies and things.
- 16:04Jeff Dziekan: Cinco de Mayo.
- 16:05Don Armstrong: 32 people fell in the river this morning.
- 16:08Don Armstrong: By the way, and by the way, what are we doing for Cinco de Mayo, Mars?
- 16:13Mike Marrs: Cinco de Mayo?
- 16:15SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: You familiar with that?
- 16:17Mike Marrs: Well, I am, but I hadn't thought of it, to be honest.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Well, it's coming up, Mike.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Uh Cinco de Mayo.
- 16:24Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 16:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:26Mike Marrs: Maybe.
- 16:27Mike Marrs: Maybe we should have tacos and margaritas.
- 16:31Don Armstrong: I think it's a great idea.
- 16:33Don Armstrong: So we're gonna call uh and get uh Stan and uh Chase to have a separate room just for us.
- 16:41Don Armstrong: We'll do the broadcast from back to back.
- 16:42Don Armstrong: They didn't do the before the hidden back room.
- 16:47Don Armstrong: Oh, that's the end of the room.
- 16:48Mike Marrs: The one with the padding on the walls.
- 16:50Don Armstrong: Right.
- 16:51Don Armstrong: And we'll get uh Steve Woodard, Sergeant Woodard with DPS to come and uh he'll be the bartender.
- 16:57Don Armstrong: He'll be the bartender, and he'll also be the one giving uh uh drunk tests.
- 17:02Don Armstrong: Citations.
- 17:02Don Armstrong: Yeah, citations.
- 17:04Don Armstrong: And then we'll get on the pedal bus powered by Mars.
- 17:08Don Armstrong: All right, just ahead.

- 18:59Don Armstrong: Okay, he's on the phone and he shouldn't be um we shouldn't be seeing that.
- 19:03Don Armstrong: There you go.
- 19:05Don Armstrong: Um anyway.
- 19:06Don Armstrong: So um we understand that uh we're kind of low on volume here and there around the globe, but uh we've tried to fix that, and you just let us know if it's still crank it up.
- 19:16Don Armstrong: Crank it up.
- 19:17Don Armstrong: If it's it's still too low.
- 19:18Don Armstrong: All right, time now for Jeff's motorback here on the N-Wheel Time Car Talk Show.

- 19:51Jeff Dziekan: There you go.
- 19:51Jeff Dziekan: Thanks, Ann.
- 19:52Jeff Dziekan: Anyways, uh it's a big event.
- 19:54Jeff Dziekan: It's been going on for quite some time, uh, since 1984, like I said.
- 19:58Jeff Dziekan: So get out there.
- 19:58Jeff Dziekan: It's it's never been.
- 20:00Jeff Dziekan: I I think we went once early on.
- 20:02Jeff Dziekan: Uh don't remember.
- 20:04Don Armstrong: It was it goes up and down uh Allen Parkway.
- 20:06Don Armstrong: Right.
- 20:06Don Armstrong: It goes up and down.
- 20:07Don Armstrong: It goes into downtown, then makes the U-turn and goes back.
- 20:09Jeff Dziekan: It's very cool.
- 20:09Jeff Dziekan: And and the whole point of it is is to get the community involved and it's art for the art uh uh people.
- 20:17Jeff Dziekan: What do you call that?
- 20:17Jeff Dziekan: Art art classes, art class in Houston, the artsy, artsy people.
- 20:21Jeff Dziekan: So artsy for artsy people.
- 20:23Jeff Dziekan: And that's what's going on in Houston, so check it out if you're in town.
- 20:26Jeff Dziekan: Um it's also gonna be on channel 13.
- 20:28Jeff Dziekan: Channel 13 is covering it.
- 20:29Jeff Dziekan: I think it's at 2 o'clock this afternoon.
- 20:31Jeff Dziekan: Don't go get it on the two.
- 20:34Jeff Dziekan: Get out there, get a good spot.
- 20:35Jeff Dziekan: And another thing for today, today is uh Fireman Jack's birthday.
- 20:39Jeff Dziekan: Fireman Jack.
- 20:41Jeff Dziekan: But there's no event.
- 20:42Jeff Dziekan: Um there they're I've got to be.
- 20:43Jeff Dziekan: Everybody's an event for Fireman Jack.
- 20:46Jeff Dziekan: I saw it on Facebook say, Happy birthday, Fireman Jack.
- 20:48Don Armstrong: Yeah, there you go.
- 20:49Don Armstrong: All right, thank you.
- 20:50Don Armstrong: Time now for this hour's car review.
- 20:53Don Armstrong: I had an opportunity to drive something that's all new.
- 20:57Don Armstrong: All new.
- 20:58Don Armstrong: And it's the 2026 Subaru Uncharted.
- 21:03Don Armstrong: And you're thinking, Well, heck, that looks pretty darn good.
- 21:06Don Armstrong: And it does.
- 21:07Don Armstrong: So it comes in these trim levels premium, sport, and GT.
- 21:12Don Armstrong: I had the middle trim level, the sport, and it was orange like that.
- 21:17Don Armstrong: It is considered a subcompact SUV, about the size of the cross-trek.
- 21:24Don Armstrong: Seats including the driver, five.
- 21:26Don Armstrong: All new for this year, as I mentioned.
- 21:29Don Armstrong: Best looking vehicle for its size, period, according to Don Armstrong.
- 21:35Don Armstrong: I I really like it.
- 21:37Don Armstrong: Um front fascia, clean design, doesn't look EV-ish, which is a big thing for me.
- 21:43Don Armstrong: Why do they have to have EV cars look different than the rest of them?
- 21:48Don Armstrong: Granted, you don't have to have a big opening in the front for cooling the radiator.
- 21:53Don Armstrong: It's not moving.
- 21:55Don Armstrong: But pardon?
- 21:56Don Armstrong: It's moving.
- 21:57Don Armstrong: It's moving.
- 21:57Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 21:58Don Armstrong: Um but this one.
- 22:00Don Armstrong: It does have kind of a grill-like thing.
- 22:02Don Armstrong: It's an air intake, but good.
- 22:04Don Armstrong: They put it in the front like it's supposed to be.
- 22:09Don Armstrong: The fastback rear hatch gives it a sports car look.
- 22:13Don Armstrong: The rear door handle is disguised in the C pillar.
- 22:18Don Armstrong: What I liked just the right proportions of curves that will give it extra appeal, in my opinion.
- 22:25Don Armstrong: What could use improvement?
- 22:27Don Armstrong: Nothing.
- 22:28Don Armstrong: Don't touch it.
- 22:29Don Armstrong: I think they've got a home run here.
- 22:31Don Armstrong: Granted, it is a small SUV.
- 22:33Don Armstrong: Interior highlights.
- 22:35Don Armstrong: Dual horizontal phone chargers are superb.
- 22:39Don Armstrong: Yes, dual.
- 22:40Don Armstrong: So you can see part of it right up there.
- 22:42Don Armstrong: You can put two phones up there, one for you and one for your passenger.
- 22:47Don Armstrong: Isn't that nice?
- 22:49Don Armstrong: Huge screen on the center dashes, easy to read and use.
- 22:53Don Armstrong: Comfortable seating.
- 22:55Don Armstrong: But rear leg room is a bit tight.
- 22:57Don Armstrong: As you can imagine, this is a subcompact.
- 23:00Don Armstrong: Steering wheel controls are kind of hard to read, but I've got old tired eyes.
- 23:05Don Armstrong: So don't blame it on Subaru.
- 23:07Don Armstrong: Blame it on me.
- 23:09Don Armstrong: As far as cargo, it's tight in the back, especially with its fastback design.
- 23:14Don Armstrong: So you give up a little bit of room back there in the back.
- 23:17Don Armstrong: But I'll tell you what, I I just I like the whole thing.
- 23:31Don Armstrong: But why not use a stalk style shifter on the column that would save the center console space for something else?
- 23:40Don Armstrong: Just saying.
- 23:42Don Armstrong: To me, this gets an urban vehicle award.
- 23:46Don Armstrong: It is awesome.
- 23:48Don Armstrong: Engine is a 3.47 kilowatt hour high capacity lithium battery that has drumroll, please, 338 horsepower.
- 24:00Don Armstrong: Dude, that's a lot.
- 24:02Don Armstrong: It's a direct drive, dual motor, motor, uh, front or all-wheel drive.
- 24:07Don Armstrong: Uh all-wheel drive, obviously, is an option.
- 24:10Don Armstrong: Uh well, it got 3.8 miles per kilowatt or hour over 481 miles.
- 24:18Don Armstrong: Now I charged it both at home and at work.
- 24:22Don Armstrong: Uh, and obviously you have to charge it because it's strictly an EV, nothing but uh electricity there.
- 24:28Don Armstrong: What I liked about it, plenty of power, plenty of power.
- 24:32Don Armstrong: What could use improvement?
- 24:33Don Armstrong: The range, 287 miles.
- 24:35Don Armstrong: Now I've got another EV that I'm driving.
- 24:37Don Armstrong: It'll be the third one in a row that I'm driving now.
- 24:40Don Armstrong: And it also, different size vehicle, but it also has 287 miles of range on it.
- 24:46Don Armstrong: I think that that's just kind of like, oh, well, we'll just throw it 287 miles.
- 24:50Jeff Dziekan: It's like a cafe standard type.
- 24:51Don Armstrong: I yeah, and that's 287 miles.
- 24:54Don Armstrong: Uh, but it depends on how you drive.
- 24:56Don Armstrong: Do you floor it a lot?
- 24:58Don Armstrong: Do you drive it at high speed a lot?
- 24:59Don Armstrong: It ain't gonna do 287 miles.
- 25:02Don Armstrong: But for an urban vehicle, which this is classified as, in my opinion, uh, 287 mile range should be enough for you to get around town and one day of driving.
- 25:13Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 25:14Don Armstrong: One day.
- 25:15Don Armstrong: One day.
- 25:16Don Armstrong: Not two days, but one day.
- 25:19Don Armstrong: Ride and handling, eight inches of ground clearance gives it a true off-road look.
- 25:25Don Armstrong: Ride and handling, smooth ride for such a short wheelbase EV.
- 25:30Don Armstrong: What could use improvement?
- 25:31Don Armstrong: Nothing.
- 25:32Don Armstrong: Okay, here comes the pricing.
- 25:33Don Armstrong: You ready?
- 25:34Don Armstrong: Base trim price.
- 25:36Don Armstrong: Now I had the sport model, which is middle of the road,$39,795.
- 25:40Don Armstrong: Price is tested,$41,720 because of some extra options on it.
- 25:45Don Armstrong: Base model price you can get in this vehicle.
- 25:48Don Armstrong: $34,995 is where it starts.
- 25:51Don Armstrong: Wow.
- 25:52Don Armstrong: Excluding tax title and license.
- 25:54Don Armstrong: Competitors, the Hyundai Ionic 5, the Tesla Model Y, and the Mustang Machi.
- 26:02Don Armstrong: Next week I'm going to review the Kia Sportage plug-in hybrid electric.
- 26:08Don Armstrong: And here's what I here's what I want to tell you about that.
- 26:11Don Armstrong: This is the first vehicle that I've actually made it an effort to plug it in.
- 26:17Don Armstrong: Because it's got a gasoline motor.
- 26:19Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 26:19Don Armstrong: And so you plug it in and it's going to give you, I don't know, 40, 50 miles of battery.
- 26:25Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 26:26Don Armstrong: So I've plugged it in, and I think that you're going to be surprised by what I have found by plugging it in.
- 26:31Don Armstrong: This one out here is a true EV, so you it has to be plugged in.
- 26:35Jeff Dziekan: So the plug-in hybrid, that is the same relation as having a donut spare, because the donut spare tire only goes about 50, 60, maybe 70 miles.
- 26:47Jeff Dziekan: So the hybrid plug-in is basically the donut spare for the car.
- 26:51Don Armstrong: But oh my gosh, what a difference it makes in the gasoline total calculations gives you higher mileage.
- 27:02Don Armstrong: I was shocked.
- 27:04Don Armstrong: And you know, I don't know why.
- 27:05Don Armstrong: I have not done it in the past because it's a pain.
- 27:08Don Armstrong: But I've got the pain worked out.
- 27:10Don Armstrong: I charge it at work and then I charge it here at the house.
- 27:13Don Armstrong: So I run an extension cord.
- 27:14Don Armstrong: And by golly, it works.
- 27:16Don Armstrong: So there's that.
- 27:19Don Armstrong: Alrighty, Lynn.
