Transcript
- 0:02Speaker 1: Coming to you from fabulous Las Vegas. The right side
- 0:07Speaker 1: is the winning side. The late move is the correct move.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Sports betting capital of the world. We all know when
- 0:14Speaker 1: a sharp like me weighs in the lines move, it's
- 0:17Speaker 1: a party for your ears. This is the buffet with
- 0:26Speaker 1: Chad and Scooch. I want to buy that guy at buffet,
- 0:31Speaker 1: all right, It is the buffet with Chad and Scooch,
- 0:36Speaker 1: Savage Scooch. He's not available today. But I got something
- 0:40Speaker 1: much much better because I have a good friend who
- 0:44Speaker 1: also is probably the most talented radio host, and you
- 0:49Speaker 1: can include sports and non sports in that working in
- 0:52Speaker 1: the biz today. My former castmate at ESPN, who I
- 0:58Speaker 1: was on a show with for two years now at
- 1:00Speaker 1: Fox starring on all various platforms for Fox Sports, Mr
- 1:05Speaker 1: Colin cow Heard. How you doing, buddy, Hey, how are
- 1:07Speaker 1: you doing? I'm doing great, man. We got so much
- 1:10Speaker 1: exciting stuff to talk about because you and I have
- 1:13Speaker 1: been talking about sports betting in the mainstream space. Honest
- 1:18Speaker 1: to god. We probably became friends in like two thousand
- 1:21Speaker 1: eleven when I moved with the magazine of Bristol and
- 1:25Speaker 1: we would talk about on your show, and then we
- 1:26Speaker 1: were doing Colin's Football Show on Sunday, Me You and
- 1:29Speaker 1: Tom Model, which was uh maybe the greatest professional experience
- 1:34Speaker 1: any of us. Still it still ranks is the most
- 1:36Speaker 1: fun I've ever had in my career. That was so fun.
- 1:39Speaker 1: I mean that show, honest to God. You know, there
- 1:41Speaker 1: are times, you know, because we are starting something Brandon
- 1:44Speaker 1: who had Action Network, and honest to God, like, I
- 1:47Speaker 1: am shooting this in our studio which doubles as our
- 1:50Speaker 1: conference room, and um, it is not all that dissimilar
- 1:54Speaker 1: from the studio we had for Collins Football Show. It
- 1:57Speaker 1: is like a converted closet. I mean, I'm I'm kind
- 2:01Speaker 1: of a I'm kind of a believer in if you
- 2:05Speaker 1: can't be. We knew the show was never gonna be
- 2:09Speaker 1: NFL Live, so once you know you're not it wasn't
- 2:12Speaker 1: a ratings play. What it was going to be is
- 2:15Speaker 1: kind of an iconoclastic, weird, contrarian play. And we went
- 2:20Speaker 1: into that show with a perfect mindset of let's do
- 2:23Speaker 1: a show where a guy wakes up on Sunday and
- 2:27Speaker 1: what would he laugh at. We had cartoons on that
- 2:30Speaker 1: damn show because once once you get out of the
- 2:32Speaker 1: pressure of okay at Sports Center six you gotta get
- 2:35Speaker 1: a rating. We knew we were on Sunday morning, right,
- 2:38Speaker 1: So once you're out of that space, all this freedom
- 2:41Speaker 1: to just be goofy and funny, and I thought it
- 2:43Speaker 1: was such a liberating fun show. It really was. What
- 2:46Speaker 1: the best part about it was there were times where
- 2:49Speaker 1: I would be sitting with you at the desk or
- 2:51Speaker 1: what it would be sitting with you at the desk,
- 2:52Speaker 1: or you would be doing your monologue, and people would
- 2:56Speaker 1: just we would just start yelling at each other chat
- 3:00Speaker 1: all either a comment. Like there were so many times
- 3:03Speaker 1: where I would like say something to you about a game,
- 3:05Speaker 1: and we had this segment where like you'd ask me,
- 3:08Speaker 1: what are the wise guys thinking? And I tell you
- 3:10Speaker 1: if you were right or wrong based on your premise,
- 3:12Speaker 1: And like Wattle would just come in from left field
- 3:15Speaker 1: with the strangest comments, as if like we were listening
- 3:19Speaker 1: to him, as if we were sitting in someone's living room.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Well it's it's the one thing I miss about doing
- 3:24Speaker 1: local radio is that you could burn segments on just Goofiness.
- 3:29Speaker 1: And now every segment I do, I mean it's charted graft,
- 3:34Speaker 1: but that there's a number to it. It's sponsored, so
- 3:37Speaker 1: it's a it's a bit reductive where you're doing the
- 3:39Speaker 1: same kind of stuff and you have to talk about
- 3:41Speaker 1: all the big brands Lebron Brady, NFL, n B A,
- 3:44Speaker 1: but that there is a freedom when you're not when
- 3:46Speaker 1: you're not playing in the big rating space, that you
- 3:48Speaker 1: can just be fun and funds an important part of
- 3:51Speaker 1: our business. Do you ever get sick of having to
- 3:54Speaker 1: play in the big rating space? Well, I do find
- 3:59Speaker 1: again the word I would use as a reductive, I
- 4:01Speaker 1: do find that once you go to television and that's
- 4:06Speaker 1: big boy business and I'm in a spot now where
- 4:09Speaker 1: you know, I'm trying to get numbers. I'm I'm competing
- 4:11Speaker 1: against the goliath. Um that I do the same topics
- 4:15Speaker 1: over and over. It's my responsibility to make them as
- 4:17Speaker 1: interesting as I can. But that's you know, you can't
- 4:20Speaker 1: do lacrosse topics. You can't do uh top ten sports
- 4:24Speaker 1: movie topics. And some of that is good, you need that.
- 4:27Speaker 1: You can do that in local radio you can even
- 4:29Speaker 1: do it and syndicated occasionally during the summer, but then
- 4:32Speaker 1: you know it's just part and parcel. You want to
- 4:33Speaker 1: you want to play in the bigger space. That's that's
- 4:36Speaker 1: what you gotta do. You gotta talk about mostly the
- 4:38Speaker 1: big stuff you've talked a lot about. I've heard you
- 4:41Speaker 1: talked about this and it was brilliant constructing a show
- 4:44Speaker 1: sort of like there's a tree that you're creating, and
- 4:48Speaker 1: then there are sort of branches that come off of
- 4:50Speaker 1: but you always sort of have that tree explain to people,
- 4:52Speaker 1: like what your philosophy is there in My philosophy for
- 4:55Speaker 1: twenty years has always been when a hurricane hits, the
- 4:58Speaker 1: Weather Channel drops all the rest of its new its
- 5:03Speaker 1: weather coverage. They talk about only the hurricane. Uh MSNBC
- 5:09Speaker 1: only talks about Trump Um. Why do I have to
- 5:13Speaker 1: talk about a bunch of stuff? It doesn't make any
- 5:15Speaker 1: sense because when I go to a bar, a restaurant,
- 5:18Speaker 1: a movie theater, at grocery store, nobody asked me about
- 5:21Speaker 1: anything other than NFL, Lebron and major topics. So I'm
- 5:26Speaker 1: a believer in you have to go into shows with
- 5:28Speaker 1: two trees and the trunk is you know, Brady, if
- 5:32Speaker 1: there's a controversy and the trunk of the tree is Lebron,
- 5:36Speaker 1: it's my job to create branches off each But this
- 5:40Speaker 1: idea that you can go into a show and have
- 5:42Speaker 1: twelve topics. Those shows don't get ratings when Lebron goes
- 5:45Speaker 1: to the Lakers. If he does, I'm gonna talk about
- 5:48Speaker 1: that for three hours for three straight days. The key is,
- 5:51Speaker 1: can I give you seven branches, seven unique angles on it?
- 5:55Speaker 1: But you know, the Weather Channel never has to apologize
- 5:57Speaker 1: for staying on storms box and MSNBC never apologized for
- 6:02Speaker 1: staying on Trump. Why do I have to apologize because
- 6:04Speaker 1: I don't cover regular season baseball, which nobody wants to
- 6:06Speaker 1: talk about. So how much time do you have to
- 6:09Speaker 1: spend thinking about what those seven branches are going to be?
- 6:12Speaker 1: All day? It's my life. I do two and a
- 6:14Speaker 1: half hours of prep every day, which is you know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: three hours show two and half hours of prep. And
- 6:19Speaker 1: I get in the car going home and keep a
- 6:22Speaker 1: notepad with me at all times, and you know, two
- 6:24Speaker 1: or three times during the course of the day, have
- 6:26Speaker 1: something pops in my head, I write it down and um,
- 6:29Speaker 1: you know, it doesn't mean it's I'm obsessing about it.
- 6:31Speaker 1: But I always keep a pen in my pocket or
- 6:33Speaker 1: near me, so if something pops into my head and
- 6:35Speaker 1: I'm like, that's an interesting branch of that, but it's
- 6:38Speaker 1: actually made my job easier over time because I don't
- 6:41Speaker 1: cover forty eight college football teams. I keep my eyeing
- 6:44Speaker 1: about eight, and I don't cover every NFL team. I
- 6:46Speaker 1: keep my eye about ten. I keep my eye about
- 6:50Speaker 1: six NBA teams and about twelve players. And it's an
- 6:54Speaker 1: easier way to do it. And this this idea that
- 6:57Speaker 1: you touch all the bases, it's just not true. Television
- 7:01Speaker 1: is redundant in its repetition. That's just the reality of
- 7:04Speaker 1: the business. That's what it is. Weather Channel, Fox, MSNBC.
- 7:10Speaker 1: I think one of the problems with the ESPN now, Chad,
- 7:12Speaker 1: they don't know what they are. Are you doing journalism?
- 7:15Speaker 1: Are you doing opinion? Are you doing highlights it? Fox
- 7:20Speaker 1: Sports one. We do strong opinions on a small number
- 7:24Speaker 1: of topics and we should never apologize for Alright, So
- 7:28Speaker 1: that is a great transition to gambling, because you and
- 7:31Speaker 1: I have talked about this a bunch. Uh. You started
- 7:34Speaker 1: doing gambling on your radio show long before anybody else
- 7:38Speaker 1: was doing it, and you spoke about it. You're gonna
- 7:40Speaker 1: make picks, You're gonna have people on who are going
- 7:41Speaker 1: to talk about it. Um, then we did on the
- 7:45Speaker 1: TV show, and you've continued to do it at at
- 7:48Speaker 1: sort of in in your new role at Fox, your
- 7:51Speaker 1: relatively new role. Um, what do you think happens to
- 7:56Speaker 1: your show and what do you think happens to the
- 7:59Speaker 1: media written lar when gambling becomes a much more popular thing.
- 8:04Speaker 1: You know, I have a theory on this, and I'm
- 8:07Speaker 1: gonna throw it to you. I think there's gonna be
- 8:09Speaker 1: a lot of mistakes made. So even when I do
- 8:12Speaker 1: Blazing five, I've always tried to make it entertaining. I
- 8:16Speaker 1: wanted to be good TV before it's good gambling. Now
- 8:20Speaker 1: I want to get my picks right. Don't get me wrong.
- 8:23Speaker 1: I want to go three and two or four and
- 8:24Speaker 1: one every week, and I take pride. I've never been
- 8:27Speaker 1: below fifty five. I did have one great year I
- 8:29Speaker 1: was like sixty two, but I try to be in
- 8:31Speaker 1: that fifty five and I feel very If I go
- 8:34Speaker 1: three and two every week, I'm I think that's about
- 8:37Speaker 1: as good as a schmuck like me can do. And
- 8:39Speaker 1: I do my homework on the picks. But I think
- 8:41Speaker 1: there's gonna be a lot of mistakes made. I think
- 8:43Speaker 1: people are going to forget a tenant of television, even
- 8:49Speaker 1: the Weather Channel. Okay, let's go to let's go to
- 8:52Speaker 1: the Weather Channel. The most popular person on the Weather
- 8:56Speaker 1: Channel Jim Cantori because he's the most entertaining, even on
- 9:00Speaker 1: Fox News, which does harsh criticism. Bill O'Reilly was the
- 9:04Speaker 1: most popular because the show had the most little goofy
- 9:07Speaker 1: crazy things in it. Best word of the day, funny arguments.
- 9:11Speaker 1: When you do these gambling shows, they've got to be
- 9:15Speaker 1: good television first. Okay, don't give me numbers nerds, give
- 9:21Speaker 1: me good TV people who who get the numbers, because
- 9:26Speaker 1: the gamblers going to watch the stuff regardless. A golfer
- 9:29Speaker 1: is gonna watch golf regardless when golf pops is, when
- 9:33Speaker 1: they have Tiger, when they have a TV star. So
- 9:35Speaker 1: when these shows come out, everybody's gonna be in the
- 9:37Speaker 1: numb numbers. Numbers, numbers, number. The winner will be the
- 9:42Speaker 1: the wildly entertaining TV personality who can figure out the
- 9:48Speaker 1: numbers and talk so the layman can get it and
- 9:51Speaker 1: guys like you can respect it. That will be the
- 9:54Speaker 1: key in this space, not getting the hardcore numbers guy,
- 9:59Speaker 1: getting the guy that's funny, smart and does get the numbers.
- 10:03Speaker 1: And that's my belief ten years will look back. But
- 10:06Speaker 1: the companies that go into really like you know, super uber,
- 10:12Speaker 1: um heavy gaming expert. Over entertaining person who can talk gaming,
- 10:18Speaker 1: they will lose. You still have to entertain people how long.
- 10:24Speaker 1: I like. I like the theory. Um, I believe in
- 10:27Speaker 1: the theory. I'm trying to execute on the theory with
- 10:30Speaker 1: what we're doing on Action Network. And you're you know,
- 10:34Speaker 1: by the way, everyone's listening to the podcast Action Network
- 10:36Speaker 1: dot Com. Go to the Action Network, to the buffet
- 10:39Speaker 1: page on iTunes. You subscribe, you rate, you review, you unsubscribe,
- 10:44Speaker 1: you resubscribe. Let's push this puppy. That's all we can
- 10:47Speaker 1: do is push. But yeah, I agree with you. It's
- 10:50Speaker 1: what I've always believed when I was doing it at ESPN,
- 10:53Speaker 1: and now that we're doing it here, we're hiring people
- 10:55Speaker 1: who know how to translate and keep people and a
- 11:00Speaker 1: team and educate. You know, we're putting cheese on the broccoli.
- 11:03Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. Well, that's why that's why
- 11:05Speaker 1: our Sunday show works, because it was entertaining first and
- 11:09Speaker 1: then give you a real, real data. We used to
- 11:13Speaker 1: keep your picks to the end, so it was funny.
- 11:15Speaker 1: It was goofy, we laughed. We had cartoons, yeah, but
- 11:18Speaker 1: in the end we got this really smart guy, Chad,
- 11:20Speaker 1: and even with the sense of humor, you gave us
- 11:22Speaker 1: real data. And so you know. The other thing is
- 11:26Speaker 1: I've always thought that I'm best served as a layers
- 11:31Speaker 1: on between people like you who are really smart and
- 11:35Speaker 1: the public. I don't want to be as First of all,
- 11:38Speaker 1: I couldn't be as smart as you, but I don't
- 11:39Speaker 1: want to be an expert in gambling. What I want
- 11:43Speaker 1: to be is no enough. I want to be able
- 11:46Speaker 1: to talk a little bit of your language. But I
- 11:48Speaker 1: also when I talk to you, Chad, I want to
- 11:50Speaker 1: say something that you go, God, that is such a
- 11:54Speaker 1: that is such a mark. Because I gotta be a dope.
- 11:58Speaker 1: I gotta be closer to be an a dope than
- 11:59Speaker 1: an expert, because I am the public. I am the consumer.
- 12:03Speaker 1: So when I would bring you on the show and
- 12:05Speaker 1: there were five picks, in two of them You're like,
- 12:07Speaker 1: that's really good, that's pretty good, and then two of them,
- 12:10Speaker 1: I was like, who You're a mark, and then one
- 12:13Speaker 1: of them. We can go back and forth. But I've
- 12:15Speaker 1: always felt my job in this gambling stuff all be
- 12:17Speaker 1: the mark. I want to be able to talk a
- 12:20Speaker 1: little bit of gambling lexicon. But I don't want to
- 12:22Speaker 1: become come across as expert because I don't think that's
- 12:25Speaker 1: any fun for the consumer. In the audience they want
- 12:27Speaker 1: to play. I want them to feel like they're kind
- 12:29Speaker 1: of me, where they think they know a little bit
- 12:31Speaker 1: more than they do, but they're certainly not an expert.
- 12:33Speaker 1: I will say the most fun on the show is
- 12:35Speaker 1: always when you would give me an opinion that I
- 12:38Speaker 1: thought was just so awful, and I would tell you
- 12:41Speaker 1: how awful it was. Your face and your eyes like
- 12:44Speaker 1: would contort into this look and like a wattle would
- 12:49Speaker 1: start yelling in the background, and also everyone in the
- 12:51Speaker 1: control room would start yelling, and I'm like, I'm thinking, like,
- 12:56Speaker 1: oh my god, that is a face that I don't
- 12:57Speaker 1: think I could ever make. That's like a Jim Carey face, right,
- 13:00Speaker 1: you know what? To me? The fun in it And
- 13:03Speaker 1: I've been doing the blazon five things forever the fun gambling,
- 13:07Speaker 1: which is really cool. I always learned something. I always
- 13:11Speaker 1: learned something from a sharp. You're a sharp, and it's
- 13:14Speaker 1: it's amazing my instincts. There's two I have two or
- 13:18Speaker 1: three believes. The only sport I ever really care about
- 13:21Speaker 1: betting would be NFL. I've got a few Bowl games,
- 13:23Speaker 1: but mostly NFL, and I've always had two or three
- 13:26Speaker 1: theories and they've served me well, Like when my first
- 13:28Speaker 1: theory is if a team that was humiliated, if a
- 13:33Speaker 1: team has a capable quarterback. I'm talking about you know,
- 13:35Speaker 1: like about eight teen teams in the league, if they
- 13:37Speaker 1: get humiliated on national TV, take them the next week.
- 13:42Speaker 1: Because it's not college football where you get humiliated because
- 13:45Speaker 1: you lack personnel. Teams are injured, teams aren't prepared, the
- 13:48Speaker 1: game plan doesn't work. If a big band gets humiliated,
- 13:51Speaker 1: if a Matt Ryan gets humiliated, always always look for
- 13:56Speaker 1: that number the minute it comes out the following week,
- 13:58Speaker 1: because the public sells very quickly on big TV games.
- 14:03Speaker 1: If a team looks like clap On minding that football,
- 14:04Speaker 1: the public is off them. But that team usually comes
- 14:07Speaker 1: back and plays their ass off. So that's just been
- 14:10Speaker 1: one of my goofie theories forever and it made mean nothing.
- 14:13Speaker 1: But I have two or three little theories, and that's
- 14:15Speaker 1: just one of them. You almost nailed the theory, You
- 14:18Speaker 1: almost got it exactly right. A big team, the big
- 14:22Speaker 1: team that gets killed on national television and you know
- 14:26Speaker 1: the public is going to be betting against them, and
- 14:30Speaker 1: you that you you got it almost there, and then
- 14:32Speaker 1: at the very end you're like, and you know that
- 14:34Speaker 1: team is going to come back strong because they got humiliated.
- 14:36Speaker 1: That's not why you bet the team. You bet the
- 14:38Speaker 1: team because the bookmakers are going to overcompensate because they
- 14:42Speaker 1: know how they can set the line and they can
- 14:45Speaker 1: fade that team in a way that makes it much
- 14:47Speaker 1: more of an advantage for the sharp betters to bet
- 14:51Speaker 1: on that team because the points press is not going
- 14:54Speaker 1: to be as much value um on the on the
- 14:57Speaker 1: favorite in that particular in that particular spot. That's why
- 14:59Speaker 1: you do it. It's not because you think they're gonna
- 15:01Speaker 1: be remotivated. It's because the value is going to be
- 15:03Speaker 1: in the point spread. It's price better. Let me think
- 15:05Speaker 1: of my other big theory I use. That's one of
- 15:07Speaker 1: the Oh, here's the other one is that um that's
- 15:12Speaker 1: my first one. Look very hard at teams that got
- 15:15Speaker 1: crushed the week before, as long as they have a
- 15:17Speaker 1: capable quarterback. The second thing is there's always one really
- 15:21Speaker 1: double digit line every week, and I immediately take it
- 15:25Speaker 1: off the board. That's the one game I refused to bet.
- 15:28Speaker 1: I just take it off the word because they're trap bets,
- 15:32Speaker 1: and I hate betting a game where I know I
- 15:36Speaker 1: have to root for an inferior product. I'm not going
- 15:39Speaker 1: to root for a thirteen point dog to hit a
- 15:42Speaker 1: field goal late, so I always take the thirteen and
- 15:45Speaker 1: a half point spread. I'm like, I don't want to
- 15:46Speaker 1: watch that game, and I don't want to have to
- 15:49Speaker 1: ever ever watch a crappy team hopefully cover back door.
- 15:55Speaker 1: So my two rules, take a good team that gets
- 15:57Speaker 1: smoked and just take the big double diget number and
- 16:01Speaker 1: throw it away. Now that's a bad because the truth
- 16:06Speaker 1: is the underdog historically generally covers over twelve points. Right, Yeah,
- 16:11Speaker 1: that would be the first. I bet some much of
- 16:13Speaker 1: the one. I always find it as a trap bet.
- 16:15Speaker 1: First of all, I gave you like a golden nugget
- 16:19Speaker 1: to elevate your first theory, and you're just glossed over
- 16:23Speaker 1: and moved down to the second one. Is if I
- 16:24Speaker 1: is if I hadn't even said anything. It's like I
- 16:26Speaker 1: didn't even get involved in the conversation. No, your first
- 16:30Speaker 1: your first one was right. I consumed your take and
- 16:34Speaker 1: you were right, and I just promptly moved in segue
- 16:37Speaker 1: to a second take. I didn't belittle it, but I
- 16:40Speaker 1: simply consumed it and acknowledge that your your acumens much
- 16:44Speaker 1: greater than mine. I appreciate the consumption I do. The
- 16:47Speaker 1: second one is interesting because you're right, You're only like
- 16:51Speaker 1: to me, those are always the games that I look
- 16:53Speaker 1: at first, Like, I'm going to look at that double
- 16:56Speaker 1: digit spread. I'm gonna see that even though it's a
- 17:00Speaker 1: double digit spread, of the money is still going to
- 17:03Speaker 1: come in on that favorite, and I am absolutely going
- 17:10Speaker 1: to bet on that double digit dog. It's like, for years,
- 17:13Speaker 1: you know, we used to talk about this show, and
- 17:15Speaker 1: like every single week we would do this on the show,
- 17:17Speaker 1: we would talk about the Jaguars. The Jaguars are twelve
- 17:20Speaker 1: point underdogs today, the Jaguars are too touched on underdogs today,
- 17:23Speaker 1: And every single week you'd be like, how can I
- 17:26Speaker 1: take the Jaguars. I'm like, everybody who's a wise guy
- 17:28Speaker 1: is taking the Jaguars because historically that's where the value
- 17:32Speaker 1: is going to be. That's just it's covering two touchdowns
- 17:34Speaker 1: in the NFL is a really hard thing to do.
- 17:36Speaker 1: It's like covering twenty eight points in college football. Yeah,
- 17:40Speaker 1: but then I have stuck watching Blake Bortles three years
- 17:43Speaker 1: ago trying to beat Pittsburgh. I just hate watching that.
- 17:47Speaker 1: It's another reason I don't butt underdogs in college football.
- 17:49Speaker 1: I hate rooting for crap. I hate having my money
- 17:53Speaker 1: on crap. That's my dad's stockbroker advice. I don't. I
- 17:57Speaker 1: like buying excellence, I like watching excellence. I hate betting
- 18:03Speaker 1: on crap and hoping crap is just good enough to cover.
- 18:07Speaker 1: I hate that. But I think that is a particular
- 18:10Speaker 1: mindset of yours as someone who you like sports, but
- 18:15Speaker 1: you are also practical, and you think about everything we
- 18:21Speaker 1: do from a consumerism perspective and as a product. Right
- 18:25Speaker 1: the way you frame your shows, whether it's television or radio,
- 18:29Speaker 1: all of the businesses that you're invested in, um you
- 18:32Speaker 1: think about it's a very clear sort of consumer service
- 18:37Speaker 1: oriented relationship. So you think to yourself, I wouldn't put
- 18:41Speaker 1: on crap. No one's gonna want crap from me. So
- 18:44Speaker 1: it disgusted you to have to to have to put
- 18:48Speaker 1: forth effort to watch crap or potentially lose money on crap.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I think that is a that is an entire sort
- 18:54Speaker 1: of you are offended by that sensibility. That's right. That
- 18:57Speaker 1: doesn't make it a smart betting move. It's just that
- 19:00Speaker 1: is my You know, my mom said something to meet
- 19:03Speaker 1: thirty years ago by my dad. She said, your dad's
- 19:05Speaker 1: not really and I don't even know where this came from,
- 19:07Speaker 1: but she goes, your dad's not really a quantity guy.
- 19:10Speaker 1: He's a quality guy. And she said, your dad had
- 19:13Speaker 1: three suits. They were gorgeous. He never believed in having
- 19:16Speaker 1: ten average suits. And we just got into the discussion.
- 19:18Speaker 1: She goes, your dad had three cars in his life.
- 19:20Speaker 1: He lived to seventy, He had three cars in his life.
- 19:23Speaker 1: He was never Your dad believed in spartan furniture, one
- 19:28Speaker 1: nice house, couple of nice suits. He wasn't a big consumer.
- 19:32Speaker 1: He just believed in, you know, go on to vacations
- 19:34Speaker 1: a year that are great, not for that our average.
- 19:36Speaker 1: And so I think I got that a little bit
- 19:38Speaker 1: from my dad. I'm not a stuff guy, like you know.
- 19:41Speaker 1: A prime example is I never I try not to
- 19:44Speaker 1: go on Twitter too much and except forward to down
- 19:46Speaker 1: to um retweet stuff. I've already done edited versions of
- 19:49Speaker 1: my TV show or radio show because I think I
- 19:53Speaker 1: don't think most consumers are on Twitter. My friends aren't
- 19:55Speaker 1: on Twitter. The media is, so I think it's just
- 19:57Speaker 1: a lot of noise with very little impact, so I
- 20:01Speaker 1: try to stay out. I always believe simple in a
- 20:05Speaker 1: more complicated world, simplicity makes me happier. Like the world
- 20:11Speaker 1: offers you a million choices, that's just more anxiety. I
- 20:14Speaker 1: still have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich four days
- 20:16Speaker 1: a week when I go home after work, Like some would,
- 20:19Speaker 1: the more complicated the world gets, the simpler I get
- 20:24Speaker 1: peanut butter and jelly every I mean, I just it's
- 20:27Speaker 1: the same crap everybody. Oh, I gotta kale this, and
- 20:29Speaker 1: I gotta kale that. I've never eaten fewer things than
- 20:33Speaker 1: I eat now, and there's never been more choices. I think,
- 20:37Speaker 1: all I all. I think choices equal anxiety, and I
- 20:40Speaker 1: don't like anxiety, so I I talk fewer topics. I
- 20:44Speaker 1: eat eight to twelve things on a repeat basis. I
- 20:49Speaker 1: go to by the way. I have a vacation home.
- 20:52Speaker 1: I mostly go to it only uh maybe one exception
- 20:55Speaker 1: a year. My life it gets simpler the more stuff
- 20:58Speaker 1: I have around me. I don't even know how I
- 20:59Speaker 1: got off in of this tangent, but that's how I
- 21:03Speaker 1: don't even know where. This is just the way that
- 21:04Speaker 1: my show is. I just start rambling. I don't even
- 21:06Speaker 1: know what I'm talking about. What else? What else are
- 21:09Speaker 1: you eating other than peanut butter and jelly? I have
- 21:12Speaker 1: oatmeal every morning with peanut butter and a kale shake.
- 21:15Speaker 1: So do I, by the way, on peanut butter every day. Ye.
- 21:18Speaker 1: I have a soup for lunch, mostly beans. I have
- 21:22Speaker 1: a piece of fish or a piece of meat every
- 21:24Speaker 1: night with a salad, one cocktail, watch a little sports bed,
- 21:28Speaker 1: rinse and repeat. That's my life. That's I'm a very
- 21:33Speaker 1: boring guy. Occasionally this this I'm I'm I'm a very
- 21:38Speaker 1: boring born. I'd be a terrible There's a lot of
- 21:40Speaker 1: jobs i'd be terrible at. You're at the pinnacle of
- 21:45Speaker 1: your career. This is when you should be going out
- 21:49Speaker 1: blowing it all. Like your kids are getting older. You've
- 21:52Speaker 1: like got a nice, comfortable life. You should not be
- 21:56Speaker 1: living the life sort of a monastic lifestyle. I know,
- 22:01Speaker 1: but I see myself. Um listen, I'm not gonna say um,
- 22:08Speaker 1: I've never fantasized about wild, crazy lifestyle things, but that's
- 22:12Speaker 1: just not who I am. It's just not my d
- 22:15Speaker 1: n A. So. And I also think you start, uh,
- 22:18Speaker 1: you start believing the hype fly in private, you start
- 22:23Speaker 1: going to bougie and I think you lose yourself. And
- 22:26Speaker 1: so I tell my wife this all the time. Is
- 22:29Speaker 1: I don't want to I don't want to be private.
- 22:32Speaker 1: I don't want to be this this, this, I be
- 22:35Speaker 1: among the people, relate to people. Media. People make a
- 22:38Speaker 1: lot of money. They put big fences up. I have
- 22:41Speaker 1: neighbors jammed all over me. I'm at the dog park
- 22:44Speaker 1: every morning. Um. I think you can lose yourself very
- 22:47Speaker 1: easily the richer you get, because the richer you get
- 22:50Speaker 1: to let you know, you can have people do stuff
- 22:51Speaker 1: for you. Like I go to the grocery store every
- 22:53Speaker 1: day every day. I know people that don't refuse to
- 22:55Speaker 1: go to the grocery store. I'm gonna have it delivered.
- 22:58Speaker 1: I want to go there every day. Again. I don't
- 23:00Speaker 1: even know how why I'm talking about this. I'm just
- 23:02Speaker 1: talking wheel is not going to buy itself, you know
- 23:05Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Okay, I got my wife's texted me here,
- 23:09Speaker 1: you got anything else? Moment? Yeah, I actually have the
- 23:11Speaker 1: actual question, which is like, all right, if you played
- 23:14Speaker 1: the segment you bet your life. You talked about your dad.
- 23:16Speaker 1: I know how important like family was to you growing up.
- 23:19Speaker 1: What was the biggest ricks you took in your life?
- 23:21Speaker 1: And what happened? I left college early? Uh that twelve
- 23:24Speaker 1: credit shy um. I got the phone call. I went
- 23:28Speaker 1: to the baseball win our meetings, got home and the
- 23:30Speaker 1: Las Vegas stars Don Logan called me and said, do
- 23:33Speaker 1: you want a job? And I looked at my mom
- 23:35Speaker 1: and I said, I'm twelve credit shy. What should I do?
- 23:39Speaker 1: And she said, I'm not going to tell you. She
- 23:41Speaker 1: said You're going to tell yourself what to do. And
- 23:43Speaker 1: I left without a degree, and it was the best
- 23:45Speaker 1: move I ever made. I bet on myself. I didn't
- 23:49Speaker 1: think I was going to get that opportunity to go
- 23:51Speaker 1: from college to a Triple A announcing job. I mean,
- 23:55Speaker 1: guys are in this business ten years before they get
- 23:57Speaker 1: to Triple A baseball. And it was the best Triple
- 23:59Speaker 1: A city. It was Vegas. So I bet on myself
- 24:01Speaker 1: and I said, I'm gonna leave college early twelve goot
- 24:03Speaker 1: a shy, and I'm gonna go sell minor league baseball
- 24:06Speaker 1: and I'm gonna do an inning of play by play,
- 24:09Speaker 1: and I just bet on myself and it was the
- 24:10Speaker 1: best move I ever made. I parlayed that new a
- 24:13Speaker 1: TV job, I parlayed that into a TV career in
- 24:18Speaker 1: a radio career, and um and I it really came
- 24:21Speaker 1: down to a very simple thing. I just didn't think
- 24:25Speaker 1: I would get that good of an offer at my
- 24:28Speaker 1: age and my lack of experience, and I thought, I
- 24:32Speaker 1: can always go back to college. Las Vegas is never
- 24:35Speaker 1: gonna offer me a triple a play by play job.
- 24:39Speaker 1: This is usually end up in like Amarillo or Midland, Texas.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I'm like, I gotta go for it. And it was
- 24:44Speaker 1: a big risk, Like a lot of people like, what
- 24:46Speaker 1: are you doing? You don't have a degree, and I
- 24:48Speaker 1: was like, dude, I can get a degree later. I
- 24:50Speaker 1: can't get the Vegas job later. And it turned out
- 24:52Speaker 1: to be some of my best friends were in that town,
- 24:56Speaker 1: and uh, you know, I I don't I don't consider
- 24:58Speaker 1: myself a huge risk taker, but that was a well
- 25:01Speaker 1: I would say you are a huge mistaker because when
- 25:03Speaker 1: is the next time you didn't bet on yourself that
- 25:05Speaker 1: You're like, that was a screw up. I should have
- 25:07Speaker 1: totally done that. I think it it it did something
- 25:10Speaker 1: to me. It gave me confidence. And at the time
- 25:13Speaker 1: I didn't have a ton It was just a goofy
- 25:14Speaker 1: college kid and I didn't really know what I was doing.
- 25:17Speaker 1: And then when I succeeded, there's a domino effect like, hey,
- 25:20Speaker 1: I can do this again. And I did it about
- 25:22Speaker 1: four or five more times in my life where you know,
- 25:24Speaker 1: like I left ESPN. They offered me a bunch of money.
- 25:27Speaker 1: It was the big network, and I went to a
- 25:29Speaker 1: startup and it's been great, And so I think the
- 25:33Speaker 1: more times you can succeed, it's like almost like playing
- 25:35Speaker 1: the US opening golf. You want to start really good
- 25:37Speaker 1: on Thursday, because it lends itself to a good Friday,
- 25:40Speaker 1: a good Saturday. If you really go into the tank
- 25:42Speaker 1: on it, you're shooting nine over on Thursday, you're screwed.
- 25:46Speaker 1: And I'm a big believer in momentum, and it gave
- 25:49Speaker 1: me kind of life professional momentum that it's been going
- 25:52Speaker 1: ever since. Well, I know what it's like to leave
- 25:55Speaker 1: ESPN to go work at a startup. Yeah, but by
- 25:58Speaker 1: the way, when you start kicking by here in your
- 26:00Speaker 1: old r you'll this will not be the last place
- 26:03Speaker 1: in the world you work. My wife always telling me that. Now.
- 26:05Speaker 1: She's like, you're a young fifty four. She goes, you
- 26:06Speaker 1: think it's seventy four, you're gonna be doing the herd.
- 26:09Speaker 1: She goes, probably not. And I'm like, yeah, you're right,
- 26:11Speaker 1: probably not. You're just gonna be hanging out in your house,
- 26:14Speaker 1: eating no meal and kale all day, wondering, wondering maybe
- 26:19Speaker 1: I should have been on those underdogs because I have
- 26:21Speaker 1: so much more money. All Right, Milman, I gotta get
- 26:23Speaker 1: out of here. I gotta go and prep for another
- 26:25Speaker 1: one of the shows I'm on. All right, Thanks for
- 26:27Speaker 1: coming on, brother, I'll talk to you later. Chad Mellmann.
- 26:29Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen support his causes. Goodbye,
