- 0:00SPEAKER_07: And welcome to our third edition of the Winanchee Panther Podcast.
- 0:03SPEAKER_07: We've got Ursula Paniotu with the Wenanche Booster Club here.
- 0:06SPEAKER_07: Hi, Ursula.
- 0:07SPEAKER_07: How are you?
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 0:08SPEAKER_02: How are you?
- 0:08SPEAKER_07: Good, good.
- 0:09SPEAKER_07: Uh before we get to you, I've got news to share.
- 0:12SPEAKER_07: Uh, first of all, thanks to Les Schwab for sponsoring.
- 0:15SPEAKER_07: Really appreciate Les Schwab tires and Winanche and East Wananchee for uh coming on board and and being a sponsor for us here on the podcast as well as our football broadcast, which will begin uh week from Friday.
- 0:25SPEAKER_07: Talk more about that coming up.
- 0:27SPEAKER_07: Uh they have just announced a new co-head coach situation for girls basketball.
- 0:33SPEAKER_07: This literally just came hot off the presses.
- 0:35SPEAKER_07: Congratulations to Jordan McGregor, you recognize that name for volleyball, and Matt Murray, who has been an assistant for a while on the boys' side, I think it was.
- 0:44SPEAKER_07: Uh, but congratulations to Jordan and Matt.
- 0:46SPEAKER_07: Uh, they were just announced today as we got ready for the podcast as the new co-coaches for girls basketball.
- 0:52SPEAKER_07: I know that's been kind of an adventure for BJ and and the staff here to find a new head girls basketball coach, but that's done in the books.
- 1:01SPEAKER_07: So look forward to basketball coming up.
- 1:03SPEAKER_07: Uh, we've got a lot of sports uh coming up on the broadcast here today, as far as uh, you know, we're gonna talk about stuff that I don't normally get a chance to talk about.
- 1:11SPEAKER_07: We're gonna talk girl swimming coming up.
- 1:13SPEAKER_07: We'll be joined by their uh head coach, Janice Sutton, and also a couple of swimmers, senior Madeline Moore and junior Cameron Palmer.
- 1:22SPEAKER_07: So hold on for that here on the Winanchie Panther Podcast.
- 1:26SPEAKER_07: Available on, of course, you're hopefully watching this on our YouTube channel, and then the audio downloads as well on Spotify and everywhere else you can get your podcast.
- 1:35SPEAKER_07: So sorry about that, Ursula.
- 1:36SPEAKER_07: I had to take care of some business here.
- 1:38SPEAKER_07: Um talk about business.
- 1:40SPEAKER_07: You guys had kind of your kickoff event last Saturday.
- 1:42SPEAKER_07: We did uh in the gym just down the hallway here.
- 1:45SPEAKER_07: We did.
- 1:45SPEAKER_07: How did that go?
- 1:46SPEAKER_02: It was great.
- 1:47SPEAKER_02: We uh did a little over$10,000 in member I know in membership and in apparel, which was a great first day.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: It was really exciting for us.
- 1:58SPEAKER_02: And we have a l almost 60 members just from that dollar amount, if that tells you.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: So it was a really good turnout, lots of great parents, a lot of new faces, a lot of old faces as well.
- 2:09SPEAKER_02: Um but yeah, it was a good event.
- 2:11SPEAKER_07: That's fantastic.
- 2:12SPEAKER_07: Now, uh I was asking BJ about this, and she kind of went, I think it is, because I asked her how much it was to join, and they're what is it$50, or it's kind of what you can do?
- 2:22SPEAKER_02: It's what you can.
- 2:23SPEAKER_02: So we ask for uh the bare bones at$25 and anything over$25, you actually get to designate to your sport or the sport of your choice.
- 2:34SPEAKER_02: So$25 keeps the booster club lights on, and so we take that first, uh$25, and then the rest gets to go to whatever sport.
- 2:42SPEAKER_07: I think booster clubs probably have evolved quite a bit from back in my day in high school, which was a long time ago, um, where they were kind of in charge of, you know, maybe getting us a a surprise at the end of the season pizza party or something like that.
- 2:58SPEAKER_07: I'm sure there's a lot more involved, especially when you look at financing from the district and all of that kind of stuff.
- 3:04SPEAKER_07: What exactly does the Booster Club for what Anchie do?
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: So we have a broad spectrum of things that we can do.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: We mainly, our main focus is ath athletics and the athletes themselves.
- 3:16SPEAKER_02: The coaches can come to us for things that the district can't cover or they don't have enough money to cover, we will help them supplement those funds when necessary.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 3:29SPEAKER_02: And so as a member joins, let's say you decided to join for$100, that$75, let's say you wanted to go to swimming, that sits in an account for them.
- 3:38SPEAKER_02: And anyone who gives money and allocates that towards swimming, then their coach could come to us and say, We'd really like some new long swimmer jackets.
- 3:49SPEAKER_02: Is that something you can help us out with?
- 3:50SPEAKER_02: And they could either have a portion of it paid for, or if there's enough money in their account, they can have all of it paid for.
- 3:57SPEAKER_02: It helps with team dinners.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: If they're on the road and they're going out, it can happen with home dinners as well.
- 4:03SPEAKER_02: It doesn't just have to be away.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: It helps with senior night.
- 4:06SPEAKER_02: So every sport has a senior night.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: And then we do state send-offs.
- 4:11SPEAKER_02: Um, so every uh athlete that's going to state gets a t-shirt, and then we do a goodie bag or basket, depending upon how many athletes there are that they get to take with them.
- 4:22SPEAKER_02: And then we also have uh three scholarships um that athletes can apply for at the end of their season that then can go toward the call the college that they're accepted to.
- 4:32SPEAKER_07: That's awesome.
- 4:32SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna take a quick moment here to grab a little drink of water because I feel a tickle.
- 4:38SPEAKER_07: So how can you possibly budget through the booster club for what you're gonna be asked on a yearly basis?
- 4:46SPEAKER_07: Or is it kind of okay, let's go do all the fundraising we can because we just don't know.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: We do all the fundraising that we can, and then we go from there.
- 4:55SPEAKER_02: And if something comes across the table that we're like, this is a super big ask, it's really important, the program can't function without it, then we will do a push to help them do some more fundraising.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: We're should be used in tandem with their efforts, but sometimes we have a little bit more clout because we've been there a little bit longer, we have more avenues of asks that we can go to, so we'll help them along the way push to say this they tennis really needs this, football really needs this, and then we will help with that.
- 5:31SPEAKER_07: Which I imagine you're working hand in hand with coaches and with BJ.
- 5:35SPEAKER_02: Yes, we work directly with coaches and with BJ.
- 5:38SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 5:38SPEAKER_02: Correct.
- 5:39SPEAKER_07: And do you have the latitude to be able to go through a provider of choice, or is it you kind of directed like uh we we use these guys for shirts, for example, or I mean how does that work?
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: If someone had something like that that they wanted to go through, absolutely, we have someone that we use.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: Um NCW Spirit does all of our state send-off t-shirts, does all of our swag for us because she donates her time.
- 6:05SPEAKER_02: So it's just the it's huge.
- 6:07SPEAKER_02: The cost of the product, so we can keep our costs lower so that it makes it affordable for everyone to try and have some sort of apparel or swag.
- 6:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 6:18SPEAKER_07: Um, by the way, you can you can become a member online, can you not?
- 6:23SPEAKER_07: You can.
- 6:23SPEAKER_07: Okay, so that is uh let me get that right.
- 6:25SPEAKER_07: Panther BoosterClub.org.
- 6:27SPEAKER_07: Correct.
- 6:27SPEAKER_07: So with that being an org, uh are you guys a final on C3 nonprofits.
- 6:32SPEAKER_07: Okay, so somebody can write a big old fat check.
- 6:34SPEAKER_02: Yes, and they get a tax write-off and we send you um uh your receipt and everything.
- 6:40SPEAKER_07: And uh you alluded to this, I want to double back on this because it's important.
- 6:45SPEAKER_07: If you're a former Panther football player and you want to support the Panther football program, you can do that through the Booster Club.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: Yes, you can.
- 6:51SPEAKER_02: And you can become an alum.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: We have a little special section just for you.
- 6:55SPEAKER_02: You get an alumni uh bumper sticker if you so desire to advertise it anywhere you want to.
- 7:01SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 7:02SPEAKER_07: I uh wonder how much you guys have been involved.
- 7:05SPEAKER_07: I know you're a mom, you're a football mom, aside from being with the booster club, but I mean this trip to California that they're taking this week, I mean, I imagine the booster club.
- 7:15SPEAKER_07: Did you guys roll up your sleeves with that too?
- 7:17SPEAKER_02: We have rolled up our sleeves in the past.
- 7:20SPEAKER_02: So actually, uh I have held two auctions um at our house for football um in in an effort to help raise money for football.
- 7:29SPEAKER_02: Football's a very costly sport and equipment, uniforms, helmets, much bigger than a lot of districts can do on their own.
- 7:38SPEAKER_07: I'm sorry to interrupt you.
- 7:39SPEAKER_07: No problem.
- 7:40SPEAKER_07: On that, how much is a helmet?
- 7:41SPEAKER_07: How much does it cost for a helmet?
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: $675, I believe.
- 7:44SPEAKER_07: Six hundred and seventy-five dollars.
- 7:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:46SPEAKER_07: And if a kid has a big head, then you gotta get a special.
- 7:49SPEAKER_07: Correct.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: An extra large, yes.
- 7:51SPEAKER_07: And so that probably jacks the price up a little bit.
- 7:54SPEAKER_07: Holy cow.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: And then you need to have them serviced every year to make sure that the paddings on the inside, chimstrap, everything is still meeting guidelines.
- 8:04SPEAKER_02: And I have never seen the bill for that, but I they don't do that for free.
- 8:08SPEAKER_02: Right, right.
- 8:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 8:09SPEAKER_07: Holy cow.
- 8:10SPEAKER_07: That's incredible.
- 8:10SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I know there was just a dad in decal night.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: There was.
- 8:15SPEAKER_07: Was that a booster club thing?
- 8:16SPEAKER_02: Nope, that was Coach Mitchell who did that, which is super cool.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: And we're doing a tackle, I think they're calling it tackle and treats for the moms.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 8:25SPEAKER_02: So, yeah, so we have something coming up as well.
- 8:27SPEAKER_07: Alliteration.
- 8:28SPEAKER_07: Gotta love it.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
- 8:31SPEAKER_07: So has the world of NIL come down to high school ranks, and is that something that have you guys had a discussion about?
- 8:40SPEAKER_07: You know, I mean, you're fundraising, you're doing all these things, you've got scholarships that are going out.
- 8:44SPEAKER_07: Is that a world that exists for Wenanchee High School and the Winanchee Booster Club?
- 8:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, I suppose it should.
- 8:53SPEAKER_07: So I mean you have the name and likeness of your star quarterback that now is pitching for somebody in town or something like that.
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I think we're that is our goal, I think, is for that to head down.
- 9:09SPEAKER_02: When we I came on the board six years ago when my kids were in eighth grade, we moved here, and so I looked at as a way to meet new people, get figure out how the high school works a good idea, but exactly.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: Um and so it was fresh off of COVID, even that first year that we were there.
- 9:26SPEAKER_02: So Booster Club had definitely dwindled.
- 9:29SPEAKER_02: People weren't volunteer obviously, volunteering, all the things that came with it.
- 9:34SPEAKER_02: So really, in the years that I have been on the board, what we started with to where we are now.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: When I came on the board, there were four of us the first year after COVID.
- 9:44SPEAKER_07: So and now four.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: So we've really taken it from the grassroots back again and then growing it.
- 9:52SPEAKER_02: So I feel like each year we take a new focus and we start building.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: So I think, yes, it's headed in that direction.
- 10:01SPEAKER_02: I think we haven't our goal will be that, but our number one goal is who's here right now are athletes, and how can we enhance the culture, the sense of community, and making it a great experience for fans when they walk through the door and a positive experience for athletes and making sure no one or any sport doesn't have what they need to be successful.
- 10:28SPEAKER_07: You said that you got involved when you guys moved here and that you had a son involved.
- 10:33SPEAKER_07: Is this I mean it makes sense to have parents involved in the booster club.
- 10:37SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 10:38SPEAKER_07: And that may all would also mean the last one graduates, last one out the door, shut the door, and you're no longer a member.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 10:44SPEAKER_07: Is that kind of how it works?
- 10:46SPEAKER_02: We hope not, and we are seeing a bigger trend of people even when their kids are not here.
- 10:52SPEAKER_02: We actually have people who on the board last year, for an example, we had a parent who her kids were done with Monachee High School, but she now had time to volunteer.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 11:03SPEAKER_02: And so she was like, Oh, this is a great time for me to be on the board.
- 11:07SPEAKER_02: So I think and we hope that's what continues.
- 11:10SPEAKER_02: I know that my group of lady friends are because of being on the board.
- 11:15SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 11:16SPEAKER_02: And we go through so much and you spend so much time with them, both during on the court, on the field, when when your kids are playing, but even in the offseason because we're building up the other athletic programs while our kids are no longer in those programs.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: So I think you can be on the board, alumni, current.
- 11:34SPEAKER_02: If you've got an eighth grader this year and you're looking, hey, what does this look like for the high school?
- 11:38SPEAKER_02: I want to get involved.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: I think there's no limitations to who can volunteer and help.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: Everybody has a talent.
- 11:45SPEAKER_02: We'll put it to use for sure.
- 11:47SPEAKER_07: So there might be some confusion because uh, you know, service clubs, you go, oh, well, you're on the board, or you're a member of the club or in the board of directors.
- 11:55SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 11:56SPEAKER_07: The three different things, right?
- 11:57SPEAKER_07: I assume booster clubs kind of the same way.
- 11:59SPEAKER_02: Yes, we have a board, and then we have members at large, and then you are a member.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: So you if you're a member at large, you just don't have a voting privilege.
- 12:09SPEAKER_02: If you are on the board as a director level position, then obviously you have a voting right.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: And then as a member, you can come to any of our meetings, and you obviously can say, Hey, I'd like to move up the ranks and be a member at large, and then I would like to take on a position.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: So we hope you'll be a member first and then love us so much that you're gonna want to have a position.
- 12:31SPEAKER_07: Well, I I see that opportunity as kind of a new service club.
- 12:34SPEAKER_07: Absolutely.
- 12:38SPEAKER_02: And you can help if you've got a kid that's an athlete that's doing swimming, soccer, whatever it is, you can choose to focus your volunteer efforts on that sport.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: It doesn't mean, oh, you have to do football because you don't have a football player or oh, softball, or whatever it is.
- 12:55SPEAKER_02: We are not going to turn you away and we'll help make sure you can volunteer in the areas that you want to.
- 13:00SPEAKER_07: How important since you've been now six years involved with the Booster Club, how important is it to have BJ come in and to really work on this environment and work on this culture that we're seeing with We are Winanching?
- 13:13SPEAKER_02: It's super important.
- 13:14SPEAKER_02: I think parents, especially, if you've got a season that isn't what you're hoping it for hoping that it's gonna be, whether it's wins and obviously everybody likes to win, but your athlete is still having a phenomenal experience.
- 13:29SPEAKER_02: There, you have a great coach, you're learning things, you're building your skill set, you've got team building, the camaraderie is going there.
- 13:36SPEAKER_02: You go and sit in the stands and you know everybody that's here, you know you're gonna have a good time.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: I think that's really important because it makes the coach and the athlete want to win.
- 13:46SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: And so I think it's all of it comes hand in hand.
- 13:50SPEAKER_02: You can't just have one and not have the other.
- 13:53SPEAKER_07: How much education do you do?
- 13:55SPEAKER_07: I don't know if you have time to sit in the stands during a game or something like that, but I'm sure we get members of the community that are also coming out to cheer on the home team, that type of thing.
- 14:04SPEAKER_07: And there's probably a disconnect or a misunderstanding about oh, they got new uniforms.
- 14:09SPEAKER_07: Well, they don't need that bond to be passed.
- 14:12SPEAKER_07: They don't need that, you know, maintenance and and operation levy to well, look at all the new stuff.
- 14:17SPEAKER_07: Is is there an education factor that's there?
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: There's a huge education factor that's there.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: And I feel like I'll use the California trip for an a for as an example.
- 14:27SPEAKER_02: Oh, if they can afford to go to California, they don't need this.
- 14:31SPEAKER_02: That California trip was outside fundraising.
- 14:35SPEAKER_02: Auctions, we had a whole team of parents that worked at the gorge for all the concerts on weekends.
- 14:41SPEAKER_02: It was 102 degrees, and they're working at concerts to help their athlete go to this, go to California.
- 14:48SPEAKER_07: And are you this comment you're making right now is as a parent, not as a booster trip?
- 14:53SPEAKER_02: Correct, as a parent, because I have two seniors this year that are going on on the California trip.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: And that's really difficult, actually.
- 15:00SPEAKER_02: That's a good point.
- 15:01SPEAKER_02: A lot of times I have to wear many hats, and people think, oh, that's just because she's booster club, she's doing that.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: No, I am a mom.
- 15:09SPEAKER_02: I've had a kid in the football program for four years here.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: These my last year my senior graduated, then I've got two seniors this year that are graduating.
- 15:18SPEAKER_02: So no, it is hard to differentiate, but I believe in both sides of it.
- 15:24SPEAKER_07: And so if I didn't, I wouldn't be on the board in this position if I didn't soul heartedly believe in the I imagine from your perspective that there's gotta be a huge pride factor too when the volleyball come team comes out and they're trotting in their new uniforms and stuff, and and the booster club helped.
- 15:42SPEAKER_07: Has helped that happen.
- 15:43SPEAKER_02: Yes, or we've helped them get to some trip, or they threw a great um senior party, their senior send-off, or whatever it is.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: We help facilitate all of that, and we're very much behind the scenes.
- 15:57SPEAKER_02: And I think just because you don't see us doesn't mean we didn't have a helping hand in all of that, and that's our job.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: We are not here to be in the forefront, we're here to be in the background to help the coaches and the athletes be the focus.
- 16:13SPEAKER_07: I I'm gonna ask a question that it may be a no, but do you guys have something to do with the senior banners too?
- 16:19SPEAKER_02: No, that is the senior banners, the ones with their photos on it, that's done through Parsons, and everybody gets one.
- 16:27SPEAKER_02: No matter how many sports you play, Parsons does one banner for you.
- 16:32SPEAKER_02: And then if you want more banners for your sports, then they'll then you pay for them.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:37SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 16:37SPEAKER_07: See, it's all about learning.
- 16:38SPEAKER_02: But we have helped hang them in the past.
- 16:40SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 16:41SPEAKER_07: So that's literally.
- 16:42SPEAKER_07: So there's yeah, there's many ways that you can be involved in the world.
- 16:45SPEAKER_07: Absolutely.
- 16:46SPEAKER_07: I mean, just write a big old check and hand it in and say, Yeah, we're done.
- 16:50SPEAKER_07: Or you can get roll up your sleeves and get involved.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: And we're never gonna turn anyone away.
- 16:54SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 16:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:55SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 16:56SPEAKER_07: Uh it the again the website is Panther Booster Club.org, 501c3.
- 17:01SPEAKER_07: So your donation is tax deductible.
- 17:03SPEAKER_07: That's a huge part of this.
- 17:05SPEAKER_07: Um, anything coming up?
- 17:06SPEAKER_07: I mean, Hall of Fame is coming up.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: We have Hall of Fame on the 19th, and then we've got a lot of uh fan appreciations, uh, which were some it might be 50, it might be a hundred.
- 17:16SPEAKER_02: The first that come through the doors are gonna get some fun giveaways.
- 17:20SPEAKER_02: We've got some new giveaways um that will just get thrown out during halftime.
- 17:24SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 17:25SPEAKER_02: We have some special uh the week of homecoming for all the kids.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: We're doing uh lunch giveaways every day for the five days.
- 17:33SPEAKER_02: Uh we do McDonald's breakfast sandwiches on Friday morning of uh homecoming football game.
- 17:39SPEAKER_02: Um no, we have lots of good stuff.
- 17:41SPEAKER_02: We're trying to keep some of it a element of surprise just for fun.
- 17:45SPEAKER_02: But uh no, I think people will see our goal this year is, like I said, to really enhance that fan and athlete experience.
- 17:53SPEAKER_02: So hopefully they'll see us out and about and be kind of cool.
- 17:56SPEAKER_07: Is there a it seems there's a national group for everything?
- 18:00SPEAKER_07: Is there a national booster club organization of some sort that goes, hey, here's great fundraising ideas, here's ideas on what you buy for the kids.
- 18:09SPEAKER_02: We have a rep that uh reps the state of Washington, and so we have him as a resource, we meet with him when we need to, or they'll he reaches out to us and says, Hey, this is new, or there's new governances you guys need to make sure you're following.
- 18:22SPEAKER_02: So, yes, we do we are governed by a set of rules that we too have to follow.
- 18:27SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:27SPEAKER_07: When you go on the road to uh Way football games, for example, do you do you sometimes go, Oh, that's a great idea?
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Yes, we do that all the time.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: And I tend to spend my time on Instagram surfing other people's uh booster club websites and what they're doing, and then borrow their great ideas.
- 18:46SPEAKER_07: So, in the last six years, what is something that maybe started here that be was actually began somewhere else?
- 18:51SPEAKER_07: Do you know?
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: I mean, fan appreciations definitely we saw someone else do, and we were like, we can tailor that to meet our needs.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: I think that would be something super cool.
- 19:01SPEAKER_02: Um I think our state send-offs and like providing t-shirts and what we do, I'm sure lots of booster clubs do a version of that.
- 19:11SPEAKER_02: I think we do a really good version of that.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: So I think it's hard as a booster club to be totally new and creative.
- 19:20SPEAKER_02: There's lots of booster clubs out there.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: I'm sure someone we're duplicating someone's idea.
- 19:24SPEAKER_02: Our goal is that we're just doing it a little bit better and changing something that makes it a little more new unique for the Panthers.
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Gotcha.
- 19:32SPEAKER_07: Hey, by the way, if if the student athlete is fortunate enough to have an inkling of talent to be able to go beyond the high school ranks and go to college, I was lucky enough to play a little football in college.
- 19:43SPEAKER_07: Um, it's a totally different experience, especially when you go to a small school like I did.
- 19:48SPEAKER_07: Uh, that whole support system, gone, doesn't exist.
- 19:52SPEAKER_07: Uh, it's the coach, and you're basically doing a job now.
- 19:56SPEAKER_07: So just a little note to folks out there when it comes to the future.
- 20:00SPEAKER_07: Again, it is pantherboosterclub.org.
- 20:03SPEAKER_07: That's where you can find out more about their programs, more about how to join.
- 20:07SPEAKER_07: And again, we'll be looking forward to uh some great things coming down the road here.
- 20:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we're looking forward to seeing everybody.
- 20:13SPEAKER_07: Ursula, thank you so much for the first time.
- 20:14SPEAKER_02: Thank you for having me.
- 20:15SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 20:15SPEAKER_07: Ursula Panny O2.
- 20:16SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 20:17SPEAKER_07: Did I get that right?
- 20:17SPEAKER_07: You got it right.
- 20:18SPEAKER_07: All right, with the Wenanche Booster Club joining us here on the Winanche Panther Podcast.
- 20:22SPEAKER_07: Coming up next, we're going swimming.
- 20:24SPEAKER_07: That's right.
- 20:24SPEAKER_07: I don't know if we'll get wet or not, but Janice Sutton, the head coach for the girls' swim team, is coming up next.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Les Schwab Tires has been proudly serving communities for over 70 years, and we've collected thousands of inspiring stories.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Like Kate, who was off on a long road trip with her best friend, when the dash lit up like a game show.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: They find the nearest Les Schwab.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: Turns out they really needed an oil change.
- 20:47SPEAKER_01: It was done in a flash.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: Road trip saved.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: At Les Schwab, we're proud to keep you rolling.
- 20:52SPEAKER_01: Les Schwab Tires.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Our greatest story is yours.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: Stories or composites inspired by real customer feedback.
- 20:59SPEAKER_07: Welcome back once again here to the Winanchee Panther Podcast, and we're going swimming now.
- 21:03SPEAKER_07: Janice Sutton is here, who's the head girl swim coach.
- 21:06SPEAKER_07: Welcome, first of all.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you.
- 21:08SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Eric.
- 21:09SPEAKER_07: How long have you been coaching swimming?
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: Uh six years.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Um, this is my first time coaching high school.
- 21:16SPEAKER_00: I've been coaching club swimming for the last six years, and our head coach of the club is our former Wenatchee High School head coach.
- 21:27SPEAKER_00: So we kind of did a job.
- 21:29SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 21:30SPEAKER_07: A swaparoo.
- 21:31SPEAKER_07: Gotcha.
- 21:31SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 21:32SPEAKER_07: Um, as you get into your season, you don't really know.
- 21:35SPEAKER_07: Do you know what you have as you come in to day one of school or somewhat.
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: Um, I was the middle school head coach a couple years ago.
- 21:44SPEAKER_00: So many of these swimmers.
- 21:46SPEAKER_07: I didn't even know there was middle school swimmers.
- 21:48SPEAKER_07: Okay, learn something new.
- 21:49SPEAKER_07: Bad on me.
- 21:50SPEAKER_07: So there is middle school swimming.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: There is.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Winatchy is one of those unique programs where we offer middle schoolers the opportunity to swim.
- 21:59SPEAKER_00: Um So it's wonderful for a high school program because starting in sixth grade, we start seeing those swimmers.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: Heck yeah.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And we get to develop those relationships.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: And that was kind of what brought me to this.
- 22:13SPEAKER_00: I knew I had, like I said, I know some of the swimmers from when I had them in middle school, and they're here.
- 22:21SPEAKER_00: So I do know a little bit what we have.
- 22:24SPEAKER_07: And you say you were involved with club too.
- 22:26SPEAKER_07: Is that velocity?
- 22:27SPEAKER_07: I'm I'm not sure what it is these days.
- 22:29SPEAKER_00: That is velocity.
- 22:30SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 22:31SPEAKER_00: Um my children all swam for velocity.
- 22:34SPEAKER_00: And that's kind of how I got involved in swimming.
- 22:38SPEAKER_00: Is that, you know, there's always everybody always wants coaches.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 22:41SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, I love kids, I love coaching, and so I slowly got involved into that.
- 22:48SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 22:48SPEAKER_07: And there's quite a reputation for swimming here in the Wenatchee Valley.
- 22:51SPEAKER_07: Is that partly because of Velocity and getting the kids going early, or what is that, do you think?
- 22:57SPEAKER_00: Um, I think it's a couple things.
- 22:59SPEAKER_00: I think Velocity, because it is the only year-round club team in the valley, it does help prepare us for swimming at the high school level.
- 23:08SPEAKER_00: Um, but I think the swimming community is a really unique community.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: Um, it's very small but mighty.
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: Um, I think about like even my assistant coach, she came from Velocity.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: She was a former swimmer at the high school.
- 23:23SPEAKER_00: Um, so I think that we get a lot of swimmers because it's a great program.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: Um, we're connected.
- 23:32SPEAKER_00: Velocity helps out the high school team.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: They provide all the officials.
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: Um, we work collaboratively with the coaches and just really make sure that we're working together because what's important is that our kids, whether they swim year-round club or they're swimming at high school, that we're taking care of our kids.
- 23:54SPEAKER_07: What's the biggest challenge you face as a coach now taking over the varsity program and doing this?
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Biggest challenge, um I think the biggest challenge probably is just our season is short.
- 24:09SPEAKER_00: Um, the swim season is only 10 weeks, and swimming is a tough sport that requires a lot of aerobic uh capacity.
- 24:18SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 24:19SPEAKER_00: And so just we get in the water and we start training hard and realizing that we only have 10 weeks to get to that championship level.
- 24:30SPEAKER_00: Um especially this year.
- 24:32SPEAKER_00: In past, we've had a lot of club swimmers.
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: I know my daughter, when she was in high school, a lot of the team was club swimmers.
- 24:40SPEAKER_00: We don't have that this year, but we do have a lot of athletes that are multi-sport athletes.
- 24:48SPEAKER_00: I mean, my team is strong.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: They're, you know, I look at them and I think, okay, we in 10 weeks we're going to be at districts and we're gonna be ready for it.
- 24:57SPEAKER_07: Uh I heard a lot from some of the other programs about the weight clo the weight room this summer and and things.
- 25:03SPEAKER_07: Swimmers do that or not so much.
- 25:05SPEAKER_07: I would imagine muscle sinks, right?
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: No, actually muscle is really important in swimming.
- 25:12SPEAKER_00: And the more that people research, they find that it's not necessarily just swimming over and over that creates great swimmers.
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: It's those swimmers that have a lot of body strength and they know how to move their body in a fast way.
- 25:29SPEAKER_00: Um, we did not, because I was hired late to the program, we did not do the wake room this summer.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: So we unfortunately missed out on that heat.
- 25:39SPEAKER_00: I'm sure none of my swimmers would say.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: I missed everything.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 25:44SPEAKER_00: Um but looking ahead for the next summer, we will go ahead and join the rest of the Wenatchee High School Athletics.
- 25:54SPEAKER_07: Do you uh I guess being around these programs for as long as you have and and having an idea?
- 26:00SPEAKER_07: Um strength among the big nine, of course, that's the first place you go, and and you've got what is it, the 11 dive meets that you have and and those things through the season.
- 26:11SPEAKER_07: So who who's who are you shooting for?
- 26:15SPEAKER_07: You know, I gotta ask those X's and all those kind of questions.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: You mean like what team are we on the street?
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what team are we gonna win?
- 26:20SPEAKER_07: Well, most districts typically has a pretty decent program.
- 26:23SPEAKER_07: East Mon, of course, has a decent program.
- 26:26SPEAKER_07: Um I think Yakima Schools.
- 26:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it's gonna be pretty competitive.
- 26:31SPEAKER_00: I know last year when Natchez won districts, but it was kind of a nail biter.
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: Um, our dive program actually kind of snuck us into that lead.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: So we are looking this year.
- 26:45SPEAKER_00: I think when I look at I we haven't had a meet yet.
- 26:48SPEAKER_00: Um I just have to kind of size up the yeah.
- 26:50SPEAKER_07: December 10th is the first meet, that'll be in Moses Lake, right?
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: I have to size up the competition a little bit at that meet.
- 26:56SPEAKER_00: But because swimming is a small community and we do know most of the coaches, we're we're pretty well aware of who's coming up.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: Um Eastmont has some really strong juniors this year, and I know Moses Lake has a few, and Winatchie, we have some really fast freshmen that are coming up.
- 27:17SPEAKER_00: Okay, and we have some returning divers.
- 27:20SPEAKER_00: So we're obviously rooting for Wenatchee to be a dominating presence in the swim season.
- 27:27SPEAKER_07: I was wondering uh now when they do club, is there diving?
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: There is not diving.
- 27:34SPEAKER_07: Okay, so they don't really dive until they get into the high school to do it, right?
- 27:38SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 27:38SPEAKER_07: So how is that progression for you know, you got kids that are turning out for uh, hey, I want to dive um for the first time?
- 27:48SPEAKER_00: Well, we are actually lucky in Winatchy.
- 27:51SPEAKER_00: I I misspoken.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: We do have a middle school diving program.
- 27:55SPEAKER_06: So okay.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: Our diving coaches, uh Mailen Ivy and Emmy England, about three or four years ago, they said, you know, let's go ahead and get some kids involved in diving.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: So they've started a middle school diving program.
- 28:11SPEAKER_00: So starting in sixth grade, our kids can have an opportunity to dive.
- 28:16SPEAKER_00: Um, many of our divers do come to us from a background of gymnastics or dance, and they happen to love the water as well.
- 28:27SPEAKER_00: And a shout out to my coaches, they are pretty fabulous.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: So I think that in Wenatchee we're lucky because we do have two really gifted dive coaches that they can take swimmers or kids that are just around water and turn them into divers.
- 28:44SPEAKER_07: That's fun.
- 28:45SPEAKER_07: Uh do you ever come across those that are like, you know, this this this youngster should at some point think about like not just college but Olympics, that type of thing.
- 28:56SPEAKER_07: I mean, do you see that level of of competition here in the Wenanchee Valley?
- 29:01SPEAKER_00: Um, well, I've been in swimming for a long time.
- 29:03SPEAKER_00: I do know of last year, for example, uh our seniors, all of our senior girls decided to swim in college.
- 29:13SPEAKER_00: So we did grow a very good That's fantastic.
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: It is, and I would encourage that anybody um there is you have to be a okay swimmer to swim in college, but there's so many different levels at the collegiate level that I would encourage if you love the sport and you're able to do it semi-well, that you look out there and find a collegiate program for you because there are so many.
- 29:41SPEAKER_00: Um, but yes, we have division one swimmers.
- 29:44SPEAKER_00: Um we four or five years ago, Ben Madsen was a swimmer.
- 29:49SPEAKER_00: He went to junior nationals, he's swimming division one, and I know that you know we never know we might see him at Olympic trials someday.
- 29:58SPEAKER_07: That'd be amazing.
- 29:58SPEAKER_07: That'd be amazing.
- 29:59SPEAKER_07: Okay, I got one question because my daughter swam.
- 30:02SPEAKER_07: She swam for e-spawn.
- 30:03SPEAKER_07: Sorry about that.
- 30:04SPEAKER_00: That's okay, we won't judge.
- 30:05SPEAKER_07: And going to her meets her senior year, I always thought it interesting that as a coach, and I'm sure you do this too, the the yelling and hollering and encouraging and all that kind of stuff when the kids' head's underwater.
- 30:18SPEAKER_07: I I never really understood that.
- 30:21SPEAKER_07: As a parent watching, I'm like, okay, you know, and uh of course I cheered too, but it's not like she can hear me or or do they?
- 30:29SPEAKER_07: Can they?
- 30:30SPEAKER_07: Well, I would, right?
- 30:32SPEAKER_00: I mean, yeah, of course they can hear us.
- 30:35SPEAKER_00: Um I would say realistically, other than breaststroke, which is a stroke where your head does actually move out of water, 99% sure they don't hear us.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 30:45SPEAKER_00: Um my child has been a swimmer for 13 years, and she says she doesn't hear me.
- 30:52SPEAKER_00: But as a coach and a parent, you just feel better screaming and yelling.
- 30:58SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it would be awful if you had to sit there and not say anything.
- 31:01SPEAKER_00: Yes, yes.
- 31:02SPEAKER_07: Okay, before you go, I want you to tell me a little bit about Madeline and a little bit about Cameron, not as swimmers, but as people.
- 31:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 31:09SPEAKER_00: Um Cameron was one of the my first middle school swimmers.
- 31:15SPEAKER_00: Um, so I've known her since she was in sixth grade.
- 31:18SPEAKER_00: Cameron is kind of like the life of the party.
- 31:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, and I don't mean that in a bad way.
- 31:24SPEAKER_00: She's got a big personality, she cares deeply, she's full of team spirit.
- 31:30SPEAKER_00: She's the one that says, Okay, let's do this, or listen to coach.
- 31:35SPEAKER_00: And everybody stops what they're doing and listens to coach.
- 31:39SPEAKER_00: Um, Maddie is a real quiet leader, and I've really appreciated this year.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: Um, we don't have a lot of seniors, and so when this transition came, Maddie came to me and said, Can I be a captain?
- 31:53SPEAKER_00: Um, traditionally in Wenatchi, if you are a senior, you were a captain.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 31:57SPEAKER_00: Um I feel that a captain needs to be somebody, it's an honor, it's something that is earned to have.
- 32:05SPEAKER_00: And so I said, Yeah, you can be a captain.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: And I was really impressed with Maddie.
- 32:12SPEAKER_00: Um, her leadership.
- 32:13SPEAKER_00: She's just like, Hey coach, can I do this?
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 32:16SPEAKER_00: Hey coach, can I do this?
- 32:17SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 32:18SPEAKER_00: Um both girls are really into welcoming our freshmen.
- 32:22SPEAKER_00: They made, they got together a whole group of kids and they made little welcome kickboards for the freshmen and organize a big buddy, little buddy system.
- 32:33SPEAKER_00: So I'd say as people, they really care about the team, they really care about others.
- 32:39SPEAKER_07: Sure.
- 32:40SPEAKER_07: Uh, if we want to watch the Panthers swim, um I know you've got the meet coming up on September 10th in Moses Lake.
- 32:48SPEAKER_07: Um, the the pool's right here, right inside the high school.
- 32:51SPEAKER_07: If you didn't know that, it's right inside the school here.
- 32:54SPEAKER_07: Um when when's the first home meet that we can come watch?
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: Our first home meet is September 26th.
- 33:01SPEAKER_00: It's a Saturday meet.
- 33:03SPEAKER_00: Um, it's actually going to be a longer meet because it's an invitational meet.
- 33:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 33:07SPEAKER_00: So we'll have teams from Pullman and Prosser and Toppenish and East Mont, of course.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Um, so it starts at 11.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Everybody's always welcome to come to a swim meet.
- 33:19SPEAKER_00: Um, there's no entry fees.
- 33:22SPEAKER_00: Um, usually swim meets are one of those opportunities where you can see that swimming is a tough sport.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: You'll see how fast those kids swim in the water.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:32SPEAKER_00: And it's impressive.
- 33:34SPEAKER_00: It's impressive.
- 33:34SPEAKER_07: And and I love when they're, you know, even for adaptive swimmers and things like that, the whole place is cheering for that kid in the pool, no matter what team they're on.
- 33:47SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 33:47SPEAKER_07: I love that.
- 33:48SPEAKER_00: Yes, and that's a great thing about swimming.
- 33:50SPEAKER_00: As you know, as a swim parent, is we're really about the kids.
- 33:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah, absolutely.
- 33:54SPEAKER_07: Well, thank you so much for taking the time to do this.
- 33:56SPEAKER_07: And we're going to meet uh Madeline and Cameron after a quick break.
- 34:00SPEAKER_07: Uh, Janice Sutton joining us here for the Winanchee Panther Swim Program here on the Winanchee Panther Podcast presented by Les Schwab.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Les Schwab Tires has always believed that taking care of people is the right thing to do.
- 34:15SPEAKER_01: Today, that means more than trusted service.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: It means delivering real value too.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: That's why we're lowering prices on hundreds of tires without changing the service and expertise you've always counted on.
- 34:27SPEAKER_01: Consumer Reports named Les Schwab the best tire retailer for 2026.
- 34:31SPEAKER_01: We'll keep working every day to earn your trust.
- 34:35SPEAKER_01: See Leshwab.com for details.
- 34:37SPEAKER_07: When At Japan the podcast continues as we go swimming this week on the podcast, and we've got a senior swimmer in here.
- 34:44SPEAKER_07: I I've been corrected, it's not Madeline.
- 34:46SPEAKER_07: Well, it is Madeline, or is it Madeline when you're in trouble?
- 34:49SPEAKER_03: It's Madeline when I'm in trouble.
- 34:51SPEAKER_07: Maddie, she prefers to be known as Maddy Moore, is joining us here.
- 34:55SPEAKER_07: And MM?
- 34:57SPEAKER_07: Is that is that your nickname?
- 34:59SPEAKER_07: Eminem?
- 34:59SPEAKER_03: Not really, Maddie M.
- 35:00SPEAKER_07: Because you're really sweet.
- 35:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:02SPEAKER_07: No?
- 35:02SPEAKER_07: No?
- 35:03SPEAKER_07: You don't have that hard candy shell?
- 35:06SPEAKER_07: No.
- 35:07SPEAKER_07: What's your middle name?
- 35:09SPEAKER_03: Michelle.
- 35:10SPEAKER_07: You're 3M?
- 35:11SPEAKER_07: Yep.
- 35:12SPEAKER_07: But 3M's kind of sticky.
- 35:14SPEAKER_07: That's that's that tape, you know.
- 35:16SPEAKER_07: Uh I don't I don't know about that.
- 35:18SPEAKER_07: Your your parents like M's?
- 35:19SPEAKER_07: You have brothers and sisters?
- 35:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I have a younger brother.
- 35:22SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 35:22SPEAKER_07: Has he got a bunch of M's too?
- 35:24SPEAKER_03: No.
- 35:25SPEAKER_07: No?
- 35:26SPEAKER_07: What's his name?
- 35:26SPEAKER_03: His name's Caden.
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: Caden?
- 35:28SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 35:29SPEAKER_07: With a K?
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 35:30SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 35:30SPEAKER_07: Is he a swimmer too?
- 35:31SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 35:32SPEAKER_07: He is?
- 35:33SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 35:33SPEAKER_07: How how much younger is he?
- 35:35SPEAKER_03: He is a sophomore.
- 35:36SPEAKER_03: So I think he's 15.
- 35:37SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 35:38SPEAKER_07: Alright.
- 35:38SPEAKER_07: So he's he's on the boys swim program?
- 35:40SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 35:41SPEAKER_07: Oh, awesome.
- 35:42SPEAKER_07: Awesome.
- 35:42SPEAKER_07: So how long have you been swimming?
- 35:44SPEAKER_07: When did that whole thing start for you?
- 35:45SPEAKER_03: Well, I started doing lessons when I was like two or three, but then I started doing like Do you remember that?
- 35:52SPEAKER_07: Or do you see pictures of it or video of it?
- 35:55SPEAKER_07: I see pictures.
- 35:56SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 35:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:58SPEAKER_07: I remember basically just don't drown type of swimming lessons type of thing.
- 36:02SPEAKER_07: Was that like in somebody's backyard or was it in an actual sword or yeah, there's like a it used to be at where I go to schools pool, but now they have like their own facility and stuff.
- 36:13SPEAKER_03: So that's cool.
- 36:14SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 36:15SPEAKER_07: Alright.
- 36:15SPEAKER_07: When did you start actually competing in swimming?
- 36:18SPEAKER_03: I think when I was like five or six.
- 36:21SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 36:22SPEAKER_07: That that early.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:23SPEAKER_07: Was that something that you said, hey mom and dad, I want to do this, or was that something they're like, hey, you might want to do this?
- 36:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they put me in lessons to like learn how to swim and stuff, and I just really liked it.
- 36:34SPEAKER_03: So they're just like, They couldn't get you out of the pool.
- 36:36SPEAKER_07: In other words, right?
- 36:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 36:37SPEAKER_07: So when you start that young, I mean, I don't know.
- 36:42SPEAKER_07: My daughter swam, but I don't remember her swimming that young as far as the competition is concerned.
- 36:46SPEAKER_07: She used to when she she lived in Twisp for a long time, and they had the little program up there.
- 36:51SPEAKER_07: It was the Orcas, I think, if I remember right.
- 36:53SPEAKER_07: Um, and they swim against Velocity and all the groups d do you swim?
- 36:58SPEAKER_07: Have you swam for Velocity too?
- 36:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:00SPEAKER_03: I've swam since I moved here.
- 37:02SPEAKER_07: Oh, okay.
- 37:03SPEAKER_07: So you're not from here originally?
- 37:04SPEAKER_03: No.
- 37:05SPEAKER_03: I used to live in Madison, Wisconsin, and I swam for D FAC, which stands for De Forest Aquatic Club.
- 37:12SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 37:12SPEAKER_07: Is that the town?
- 37:13SPEAKER_07: Yeah, DeForest.
- 37:15SPEAKER_07: DeForest, Wisconsin?
- 37:16SPEAKER_07: Is that it?
- 37:17SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 37:17SPEAKER_07: Is that one word or is that two words?
- 37:20SPEAKER_07: One word.
- 37:20SPEAKER_07: D for okay, got it.
- 37:22SPEAKER_07: Alright.
- 37:23SPEAKER_07: Uh so when were how old were you when you did that?
- 37:27SPEAKER_07: When you moved here?
- 37:28SPEAKER_03: Like, oh, when I moved here, I think I was like 10.
- 37:32SPEAKER_07: Oof.
- 37:32SPEAKER_07: That had to be rough.
- 37:34SPEAKER_07: I mean, you got your circle friends by then.
- 37:36SPEAKER_07: You got all your pool buddies.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 37:38SPEAKER_07: And now suddenly you're you're leaving.
- 37:40SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 37:40SPEAKER_07: How was it coming here?
- 37:42SPEAKER_07: And did you know anything about Winanchee before you came here?
- 37:45SPEAKER_03: I did not.
- 37:46SPEAKER_03: I moved here because of my dad's work.
- 37:49SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 37:49SPEAKER_03: And um it was definitely a big change.
- 37:52SPEAKER_03: It's the climate is definitely very different.
- 37:55SPEAKER_03: Went from like tornadoes, thunderstorms to wildfires.
- 37:59SPEAKER_07: So that fifth season kind of sucks.
- 38:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:03SPEAKER_07: Um, when you came here, did you get right involved in the swim program?
- 38:07SPEAKER_07: Because I imagine that would be and when my daughter moved down from Twisp to Eastwond, um, she immediately joined the swim team because, well, that's a way to meet friends.
- 38:15SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:16SPEAKER_03: I think it was definitely really good for me to just go into swimming because it's like for swim team, it's like you know those swimmers, you know those people as you grow up.
- 38:24SPEAKER_07: Sure.
- 38:24SPEAKER_03: So yeah.
- 38:26SPEAKER_07: And what time of year did it did it did you come here and then get involved in swimming?
- 38:30SPEAKER_07: Because there's indoor swimming or outdoor swimming here, right?
- 38:33SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: I moved in the summer before fifth grade, so I probably that's when I kind of like met everyone was during summer, but I don't think I ended up swimming until like fall.
- 38:43SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 38:44SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 38:44SPEAKER_07: Was it still outdoors or indoors when you started that?
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: I think it was indoors.
- 38:48SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 38:49SPEAKER_07: Alright, so because Madison or in De Forest, that was all indoor swimming, right?
- 38:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 38:55SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 38:55SPEAKER_07: So that was probably kind of a learning curve for you to do the velocity thing when you're swimming outdoors, right?
- 39:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's definitely very different because you don't have like anything to look at on the ceiling if you're doing backstroke, because I'm a backstroker.
- 39:08SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 39:08SPEAKER_03: Um, so I guess over time I just kind of learned that you have to like be more aware of your surroundings.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: So I learned to just look at like the lane lines and yeah.
- 39:17SPEAKER_07: Yeah, and if you feel it on your shoulder, you're over way too far, right?
- 39:21SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 39:22SPEAKER_07: When did you know that okay, backstroke's my stroke?
- 39:27SPEAKER_07: This is this is what I'm gonna work on the most.
- 39:29SPEAKER_03: Well, I used to be a breaststroker, which is really interesting because normally breaststrokers are not backstrokers and like vice versa.
- 39:36SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 39:36SPEAKER_03: But I think it was like middle school when I kind of realized that backstroke was my thing.
- 39:42SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it was just because I was like a stronger back kicker than like most other people, so I just like gravitated towards that.
- 39:50SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 39:50SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 39:51SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 39:51SPEAKER_07: Now Jana Sutton said that she used I didn't even know until this whole interview, and I'm glad I'm doing this now, that you guys had middle school swimming.
- 39:59SPEAKER_07: So did you swim for Janet?
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 40:01SPEAKER_03: And then I also swam for her along with Velocity, because she did use to coach that too.
- 40:06SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 40:06SPEAKER_07: And she's stepping into the role as varsity coach.
- 40:10SPEAKER_07: Now you're a senior.
- 40:11SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 40:12SPEAKER_07: For maybe some of your teammates, those probably kind of if they didn't know her, yeah.
- 40:17SPEAKER_07: It was easier for you to go, oh, I know her.
- 40:19SPEAKER_07: That's yeah.
- 40:20SPEAKER_03: I'm really glad that was her, not just some random person I don't know because these four years have been a little rough with the coaching because it's just constantly been changing.
- 40:29SPEAKER_03: But yeah, I'm really glad it was her.
- 40:31SPEAKER_07: So I gotta ask this.
- 40:33SPEAKER_07: I asked your coach too, and you know, as a former swim dad, I never understood going to meets and having the coach yelling at you while you're in the pool, on the pool deck.
- 40:44SPEAKER_07: Can you hear them at all?
- 40:46SPEAKER_03: Like, no.
- 40:48SPEAKER_03: Like if you're doing breaststroke, maybe fly.
- 40:50SPEAKER_03: You might be able to.
- 40:51SPEAKER_07: Uh-huh.
- 40:52SPEAKER_03: But it would be like they'd have to be like whistling or something, like you couldn't make out any words.
- 40:57SPEAKER_07: Well, and what what are they telling you other than you're behind or you're ahead?
- 41:02SPEAKER_07: I mean, what what what what information could be possibly passed between the coach and you that's gonna help you while you're in the pool?
- 41:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean, like all they want you to do is like succeed and win.
- 41:12SPEAKER_03: So I always take it as like go faster or like tempo.
- 41:15SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:16SPEAKER_03: Because most of the time after you're done with your race, then that's when you go and talk and they say, Oh, you could do this with your technique or do that.
- 41:23SPEAKER_07: Mm-hmm.
- 41:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:24SPEAKER_07: Well, okay, so you went from breaststroke to backstroke.
- 41:29SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 41:30SPEAKER_07: Because of an injury or not necessarily.
- 41:33SPEAKER_03: I just like found myself just liking backstroke more.
- 41:37SPEAKER_07: But then two years ago you don't have to put your face in the water except on the turn, right?
- 41:41SPEAKER_07: I mean I'd be like, okay, time you up for that one.
- 41:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 41:45SPEAKER_03: During my sophomore year though, I did injure myself during breaststroke.
- 41:48SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 41:49SPEAKER_03: So that was fun.
- 41:51SPEAKER_07: What'd you do?
- 41:52SPEAKER_03: I uh tore my MCL partially, so I didn't have to get surgery.
- 41:55SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 41:56SPEAKER_07: But it's still there, right?
- 41:58SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm still have some swelling and some breasts.
- 42:01SPEAKER_07: Well, that's a different breaststroke.
- 42:02SPEAKER_07: I mean, that's a you're doing weird kicks with your legs, and I can imagine that that would not be so fun for your knee if it's got any kind of weakness whatsoever.
- 42:11SPEAKER_07: So what does that mean for you for this year?
- 42:12SPEAKER_07: I mean, is that are you healed up for that?
- 42:14SPEAKER_07: You're all good?
- 42:15SPEAKER_03: I'm healed up enough, I think, to be able to do all the other strokes.
- 42:19SPEAKER_03: Um I was good to do breaststroke over the summer, and then I did a little bit and my kneecap dislocated, which had also been something that I'd been struggling.
- 42:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 42:31SPEAKER_03: Just because the like muscles in my leg had been like so swollen from the overworking that pushed my kneecap up, so like it's kind of normal, I guess.
- 42:39SPEAKER_06: Wow.
- 42:40SPEAKER_03: But so now we're taking another break from brush oak, which kind of sucks because I was hoping I'd get to do medly work, but it is what it is.
- 42:49SPEAKER_07: So what l length do you compete at?
- 42:52SPEAKER_07: I mean there's 50, there's hundreds, right?
- 42:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 42:54SPEAKER_07: And then then there's super long.
- 42:55SPEAKER_03: And then there's two hundreds and five hundreds.
- 42:57SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 42:57SPEAKER_03: I think I mostly do one hundreds because I have like a really I don't have like a long sprint like for two hundreds.
- 43:05SPEAKER_03: Because two hundreds are difficult because right in between long distance and sprint, so it's like you have to have really good endurance, which currently I do not have that from taking breaks.
- 43:15SPEAKER_03: Um, so I think I'm gonna s hopefully stick with one hundreds.
- 43:19SPEAKER_03: And I'm What if your coach comes to you?
- 43:21SPEAKER_07: What if Janet comes to you and says, Okay, Maddie, I need you to I need your buck up, I need you to do a 400 today.
- 43:27SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's always I'm like, I'm definitely prepared for it.
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:32SPEAKER_03: It's not my strength.
- 43:33SPEAKER_07: But she's also not gonna put you in a position to fail, right?
- 43:36SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:37SPEAKER_07: I mean, what is okay, that's a good question.
- 43:39SPEAKER_07: What is failing to you?
- 43:42SPEAKER_07: That's hopefully not even in your vocabulary.
- 43:45SPEAKER_03: Well, uh, I feel like failing to falling short.
- 43:47SPEAKER_03: Letting down others.
- 43:49SPEAKER_07: Oh, okay.
- 43:50SPEAKER_07: Oof.
- 43:50SPEAKER_07: That's tough.
- 43:51SPEAKER_03: Which yeah, I always hate like letting down the team.
- 43:53SPEAKER_07: Mm-hmm.
- 43:54SPEAKER_03: Which I feel like I always have been feeling recently just 'cause my knee and it's like, well, I wish I could be better.
- 44:00SPEAKER_03: I wish I could do this.
- 44:01SPEAKER_03: And like yesterday during practice, we had a kick set, and then we did breaststroke.
- 44:06SPEAKER_03: And so I was like, I was doing I was trying my best to do breaststroke with like my good leg, which it felt really weird because I hadn't done breaststroke since like last year.
- 44:17SPEAKER_03: So it's definitely very interesting.
- 44:21SPEAKER_07: Your coach described you as a quiet leader.
- 44:24SPEAKER_07: Is that true?
- 44:25SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 44:25SPEAKER_07: And what is that what does that look like for you?
- 44:27SPEAKER_03: I feel like I re-demonstrate a lot and I'm not like really outgoing.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: I feel like like I'll talk to people, but like one-on-one, maybe like three people, but not like in front of everyone, and like yeah.
- 44:41SPEAKER_07: Okay, okay.
- 44:42SPEAKER_07: Because it's difficult to show proper form and technique while you're standing on the pool deck, right?
- 44:48SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 44:48SPEAKER_07: I mean that's kind of weird.
- 44:50SPEAKER_07: I mean, I would feel weird if I was trying to show somebody how to do it, and it's better like Maddie, go jump in the pool and show them how to do it.
- 44:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because like words can only do so much.
- 44:59SPEAKER_03: It's like you need to see it to be able to really get it.
- 45:01SPEAKER_07: Gotcha, gotcha.
- 45:02SPEAKER_07: So what's your goal?
- 45:03SPEAKER_07: What do you want to what do you want to accomplish?
- 45:05SPEAKER_07: I mean, this is a this is a great program that you're a part of.
- 45:09SPEAKER_07: What do you what do you expect for this year?
- 45:11SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'd really love to go to state because I have the three past years that I've swam, and it'll definitely be a lot more challenging this year now that our seniors are graduated, and I'm so proud of them all because they're really great swimmers, and I think they're all continuing on in swimming d at the college level.
- 45:28SPEAKER_03: So that's really exciting.
- 45:29SPEAKER_03: But I'm hoping that the freshmen, because I know we have some pretty good ones, can help pull through the season and hopefully become district champs and hopefully get a state.
- 45:39SPEAKER_07: So you being involved in club swim, uh, you probably have a good idea of of those freshmen that are coming in.
- 45:46SPEAKER_07: It's not brand new to you, you know, like just because they're new to the high school doesn't mean they're new to you as far as swimmers.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm really happy to see some of the freshmen just because it's like I know them from club, only a few.
- 45:58SPEAKER_03: Some are like returning that I used to swim with in club, which I'm really happy about because it's like I haven't seen them.
- 46:04SPEAKER_03: But I also help out with middle school, so I kind of got to see some of the swimmers that aren't in club but are also coming in, so that was really fun.
- 46:11SPEAKER_07: Gotcha.
- 46:12SPEAKER_07: So the um I remember when my daughter swam at Eastmont, uh, when Eastmont swam against Wenanchee, there was well they're w everybody's warming up before the meet starts.
- 46:21SPEAKER_07: They got together and did a big cheer thing that I thought was so cool.
- 46:25SPEAKER_07: Do you guys still do that?
- 46:26SPEAKER_03: Or it's the Valley Pride cheer.
- 46:28SPEAKER_07: Oh, okay.
- 46:29SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:29SPEAKER_07: How's that go?
- 46:30SPEAKER_03: Um, to be honest, I haven't done it for a year sometime.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: I don't remember.
- 46:34SPEAKER_03: But it's kind of like once they start doing it, it's like, you know, oh yeah, right.
- 46:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 46:39SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 46:39SPEAKER_07: It's kind of like the Star Spangled Banner.
- 46:41SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 46:41SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah, that.
- 46:42SPEAKER_07: That okay.
- 46:43SPEAKER_07: Yeah, rockets in midair and things like that.
- 46:45SPEAKER_07: So your first meet's coming up on September 10th.
- 46:48SPEAKER_07: It's at Moses Lake.
- 46:50SPEAKER_07: It's uh it's a big meet, right?
- 46:51SPEAKER_07: There's like six, seven teams, something like that.
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: Yes, all the teams in our district, plus like some two-ways that don't really have a pool.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 46:59SPEAKER_03: They also come.
- 47:00SPEAKER_03: And it's all like fifties.
- 47:02SPEAKER_03: So you do all the 50s.
- 47:04SPEAKER_07: It's kind of nice for to start the season, right?
- 47:07SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 47:07SPEAKER_07: To kind of not have the big long stuff.
- 47:09SPEAKER_07: Things like that.
- 47:10SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 47:11SPEAKER_07: Well, are you ready for it?
- 47:12SPEAKER_07: Or you got I mean, you got a week.
- 47:14SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 47:14SPEAKER_03: I think so.
- 47:15SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 47:16SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 47:16SPEAKER_07: So, um, by the way, uh, first meet at home is later in September, 26th or something like that.
- 47:23SPEAKER_03: I think so, yeah.
- 47:24SPEAKER_07: It's a it's a Saturday, and it's a big meet.
- 47:27SPEAKER_07: So if you want to come cheer on the Panthers, come right here to the high school because the pool is in the high school, and um you can see Maddie will come up with a nickname for I'd like Eminem.
- 47:38SPEAKER_07: I kinda like that.
- 47:39SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, but you can't give yourself a nickname.
- 47:43SPEAKER_07: It's up to your teammates to give.
- 47:45SPEAKER_07: Do you have a nickname for Cameron that's coming in here?
- 47:50SPEAKER_07: You guys don't do nicknames?
- 47:51SPEAKER_07: Is that not a thing anymore?
- 47:54SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 47:54SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 47:55SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 47:56SPEAKER_07: Well that that works.
- 47:57SPEAKER_07: Uh Cameron Palmer is going to join us.
- 48:00SPEAKER_07: College.
- 48:00SPEAKER_07: Where where are you going?
- 48:02SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't know yet.
- 48:04SPEAKER_03: I have some uh ideas.
- 48:05SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 48:06SPEAKER_03: But yeah.
- 48:07SPEAKER_07: You're not gonna tell us what those ideas are.
- 48:08SPEAKER_03: Um okay, I have like top three.
- 48:11SPEAKER_07: Oh, oh, okay.
- 48:12SPEAKER_03: I don't really know if anyone's ahead of the other, but I just have three options.
- 48:17SPEAKER_07: These colleges are standing by, they're waiting for this uh decision, by the way.
- 48:21SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah.
- 48:22SPEAKER_03: Uh so University of Wisconsin and Madison.
- 48:26SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 48:26SPEAKER_07: Um in your home woods.
- 48:28SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 48:29SPEAKER_03: And my dad went there for a little bit, so kind of fun.
- 48:32SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 48:33SPEAKER_03: Um, Oregon State through the Honors College.
- 48:36SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 48:39SPEAKER_03: Is it's whatever, but we'll see.
- 48:41SPEAKER_03: I like that it's closer to home.
- 48:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:43SPEAKER_03: And then Cow Poly.
- 48:44SPEAKER_07: Oh, okay.
- 48:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, kind of all over the place.
- 48:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 48:47SPEAKER_07: And what do you want to do with college and for your future endeavors?
- 48:52SPEAKER_03: Um, I want to major in animal science or veterinary biosciences, depending on where I go.
- 48:59SPEAKER_03: And then I want to become a small animal vet.
- 49:02SPEAKER_07: Do you do you know somebody that's into that, or how did that strike your fancy?
- 49:07SPEAKER_03: Well, I feel like since I was a little kid, I've loved animals, loved helping them, and always like wanted to do that.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: And then now I work in a vet clinic for like kennel staff and boarding.
- 49:17SPEAKER_06: Oh, okay.
- 49:18SPEAKER_03: So I get to like experience like what the vets actually see day to day.
- 49:24SPEAKER_07: And which is a lot.
- 49:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 49:26SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 49:27SPEAKER_07: So how many animals do you have?
- 49:29SPEAKER_07: I have eight.
- 49:30SPEAKER_07: Eight?
- 49:31SPEAKER_07: Eight?
- 49:32SPEAKER_07: Okay, what are they?
- 49:33SPEAKER_03: I have two dogs, Fern and Cindy Bear.
- 49:35SPEAKER_03: Cindy's a Chesapeake Bear Retriever.
- 49:37SPEAKER_03: Fern is like a husky shepherd mix.
- 49:40SPEAKER_03: She's a rescue.
- 49:41SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 49:41SPEAKER_03: And then I have two rabbits, pumpkin and spice.
- 49:46SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 49:46SPEAKER_07: Are they brown?
- 49:47SPEAKER_03: Um, pumpkin's orange, and spice is kind of just like every color.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: Like she got some brown.
- 49:52SPEAKER_03: She's like, Yeah.
- 49:54SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 49:54SPEAKER_07: Gotcha.
- 49:55SPEAKER_07: And then I don't know, that's a that's what they use for cats.
- 49:57SPEAKER_07: I don't know if they use that for rabbits.
- 49:59SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 50:00SPEAKER_07: Okay, got it.
- 50:01SPEAKER_03: And then I have four ducks.
- 50:02SPEAKER_07: Four ducks?
- 50:04SPEAKER_07: When did you add the ducks to the to the farm?
- 50:07SPEAKER_03: I want to say like a year ago.
- 50:11SPEAKER_07: And why did you add ducks to the mix?
- 50:15SPEAKER_07: Well, was it supposed to be just one duck?
- 50:18SPEAKER_03: I was supposed to show them.
- 50:19SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 50:20SPEAKER_03: But then that never really ended up happening just because I was so busy with like swim.
- 50:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 50:24SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 50:24SPEAKER_07: Um have you taken your ducks swimming with you?
- 50:27SPEAKER_03: Yes, they have a pool.
- 50:28SPEAKER_03: I've never swam with them, but they have a pool.
- 50:31SPEAKER_07: Because that'd be kind of a funny thing.
- 50:33SPEAKER_07: Of course, you know, I think your coach might frown on having the ducks in the pool with you.
- 50:38SPEAKER_07: I'm sure they'd love it.
- 50:39SPEAKER_03: They would much bigger pool, yeah.
- 50:40SPEAKER_07: They would.
- 50:41SPEAKER_07: That'd be kind of fun.
- 50:42SPEAKER_07: It's like okay, your duck names are what?
- 50:44SPEAKER_03: Um oatmeal, mango, mocha, and huckleberry.
- 50:49SPEAKER_07: Well, of course.
- 50:50SPEAKER_07: And are they egg laying ducks?
- 50:52SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 50:52SPEAKER_07: Oh.
- 50:53SPEAKER_03: I specifically made sure that the breeds were egg layers.
- 50:55SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 50:56SPEAKER_03: And they can't fly.
- 50:57SPEAKER_03: So they're like technically free-ranged.
- 50:59SPEAKER_03: So they've been clipped, but they're they're just like I don't know if they're too big.
- 51:03SPEAKER_03: They just like can't.
- 51:04SPEAKER_07: Oh.
- 51:04SPEAKER_07: Like sometimes they can jump and then like kind of like glide back down, but like they just do they do they have like individual personalities that Yes.
- 51:12SPEAKER_07: Oh, okay.
- 51:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 51:13SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 51:14SPEAKER_07: Alright.
- 51:14SPEAKER_03: Oatmeal's very special to me because um when she was little she had a niacin deficiency.
- 51:20SPEAKER_03: So her legs kind of like grew pigeon toed.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: Oh.
- 51:22SPEAKER_03: And so she used to not be able to walk.
- 51:24SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 51:24SPEAKER_03: So I had to like help her with that and like make sure she got the niacin she needed.
- 51:29SPEAKER_03: And now she still pigeon toed, but she can like walk a little bit better.
- 51:32SPEAKER_07: So that's just has a little extra waddle.
- 51:34SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 51:35SPEAKER_07: Going on.
- 51:36SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 51:36SPEAKER_07: Well, Maddie, thanks for taking the time to do this and best of luck this season.
- 51:39SPEAKER_07: Thank you.
- 51:40SPEAKER_07: Stay healthy.
- 51:41SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 51:41SPEAKER_07: No more knee problems.
- 51:43SPEAKER_07: And and kneecap.
- 51:45SPEAKER_07: Ouch.
- 51:45SPEAKER_07: That just sounds bad.
- 51:46SPEAKER_07: That just sounds bad.
- 51:47SPEAKER_07: And uh be sure and uh cheer on Maddie, even though she can't hear you.
- 51:52SPEAKER_07: No, you can hear you can hear the fans if they're going nuts, right?
- 51:55SPEAKER_07: Yeah, you can hear like whistles.
- 51:56SPEAKER_07: Okay, all right.
- 51:57SPEAKER_07: Just no instructions.
- 51:58SPEAKER_07: Go faster.
- 51:59SPEAKER_07: No, no.

- 52:57SPEAKER_07: She is a junior swimmer, uh, but also a golfer.
- 53:00SPEAKER_07: We'll get into the golf here in just a minute.
- 53:02SPEAKER_07: How are you doing, Cameron?
- 53:03SPEAKER_04: I'm doing really good.
- 53:04SPEAKER_07: Are you?
- 53:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 53:05SPEAKER_07: School started.
- 53:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 53:07SPEAKER_07: Are you into a routine yet or does it take a little while?
- 53:09SPEAKER_04: I have only one class in the high school.
- 53:11SPEAKER_04: I'm a running start student.
- 53:13SPEAKER_04: So uh my actual school doesn't start until next up, like end of September.
- 53:18SPEAKER_07: How do you manage, well, I guess this will be your first time doing it.
- 53:22SPEAKER_07: How do you perceive that you will manage and juggle and do swimming and all of that?
- 53:27SPEAKER_04: Um, it's a really tight line.
- 53:29SPEAKER_04: I feel I have really researched and looked up certain times that different classes will end and start, and so I can have each time to get there and get back and like make sure that I get here on time and stuff like that.
- 53:44SPEAKER_04: Um but also we don't have s like high uh college doesn't have school on Friday, so then I can take that time to actually work out.
- 53:51SPEAKER_07: Nice and nice.
- 53:53SPEAKER_07: Working out.
- 53:53SPEAKER_07: I asked their your coach that question um because I was curious.
- 53:57SPEAKER_07: I'm hearing from the other sports that they were in the weight room in the summertime and they were working out and all that kind of stuff.
- 54:03SPEAKER_07: And is that a thing for swimmers?
- 54:05SPEAKER_07: I don't even know.
- 54:06SPEAKER_04: I feel like you should.
- 54:07SPEAKER_04: I feel like they really advise to work out and keep your cardio going because you're gonna need that.
- 54:13SPEAKER_05: Oh, sure.
- 54:14SPEAKER_04: Um, I personally didn't.
- 54:15SPEAKER_04: Uh I was really busy this summer, had lots of things going on, but I really um so every year we take this road trip and we go a week.
- 54:25SPEAKER_07: We as in family?
- 54:26SPEAKER_04: Yes, me and me, me, my brother, my mom, and my dad.
- 54:29SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 54:29SPEAKER_04: And uh we do national park road trips.
- 54:31SPEAKER_04: And so we had all these national parks, and so we we flew into Boston, drove up to Maine, hit Vermont, and everything, and so now I've only have Texas and Alaska to go, and then I've hit all 50 states.
- 54:43SPEAKER_07: You're kidding me?
- 54:44SPEAKER_07: No, that's incredible.
- 54:45SPEAKER_07: Now, how old were you when you started this?
- 54:47SPEAKER_04: Um, it was 2018.
- 54:49SPEAKER_04: So I'm actually not sure how old I would be.
- 54:51SPEAKER_04: Um, but it was like when COVID ha is like so that's eight years bigger if you do the math.
- 54:57SPEAKER_04: Yeah, so and then I will be finished during like when I'm 18.
- 55:00SPEAKER_04: So I'd like Holy Cow.
- 55:01SPEAKER_07: Of course, going to the northeast, you hit a bunch of states that it and one fell swoop, right?
- 55:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 55:06SPEAKER_04: Um our next upcoming trip, uh we are gonna take a an Alaskan cruise.
- 55:10SPEAKER_04: My parents have already taken Alaskan cruises um and like go see everything because they've already been and hit na um national parks like there, and then take a Texas and hit Colorado, New Mexico, and m get the national parks that we haven't gotten yet.
- 55:28SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 55:28SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 55:28SPEAKER_07: So is this something that because you know there's some teenagers especially that would be like, really?
- 55:34SPEAKER_07: We're gonna do this again?
- 55:36SPEAKER_07: You know, it wouldn't be their their thing.
- 55:38SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 55:38SPEAKER_07: So did you kind of catch the bug from your parents?
- 55:42SPEAKER_07: I mean, obviously doing this since you were younger.
- 55:44SPEAKER_04: Um, it's always it's because it's always something new.
- 55:47SPEAKER_04: So there each part of the United States is very different.
- 55:51SPEAKER_04: There's the what like there's the West Coast where it's really green, and then the California, and then there's the middle like middle where it's really dry, and then there's the east coast where it's more Atlantic Ocean and hot.
- 56:02SPEAKER_07: Which if you're traveling in those areas summertime, yeah, you're getting whatever is happening in July or we used to do it around my birthday.
- 56:09SPEAKER_04: So earlier in the uh year, like early years, we used to do it around April, which my birthday's April 10th.
- 56:15SPEAKER_04: So we would go then spring breakish.
- 56:17SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and we would miss school.
- 56:18SPEAKER_04: And now my parents have moved it until it was like literally 3 a.m.
- 56:22SPEAKER_04: the next morning of school ended.
- 56:24SPEAKER_04: And so then we would go with like June.
- 56:26SPEAKER_07: Wow.
- 56:26SPEAKER_04: So then it's really hot and humid, depending on where we are.
- 56:30SPEAKER_07: So what's been your favorite one?
- 56:31SPEAKER_07: Oh your favorite trip?
- 56:32SPEAKER_04: I really liked the one a couple years ago where we went down to south the south and we went to like bot not Boston buses out there.
- 56:41SPEAKER_04: We hit the Louisiana.
- 56:42SPEAKER_04: Oh, okay.
- 56:43SPEAKER_04: I loved New Orleans.
- 56:44SPEAKER_04: It was like it was like like a culture shock to me.
- 56:48SPEAKER_04: I really, really loved it, and I would love to go back.
- 56:50SPEAKER_07: What was your favorite part about New Orleans?
- 56:53SPEAKER_04: The food's amazing.
- 56:55SPEAKER_04: The food's amazing.
- 56:56SPEAKER_04: It was just the atmosphere and the vibe that they gave and the French quarter.
- 56:59SPEAKER_04: Ugh, it was amazing.
- 57:01SPEAKER_04: Music was wonderful.
- 57:02SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it is pretty incredible.
- 57:04SPEAKER_07: Um, your coach described you, and now I see why, in a very short amount of time.
- 57:09SPEAKER_07: Janet described you as the life of the party in a good way.
- 57:15SPEAKER_07: I don't I don't know exactly what that means, but I mean you're a world traveler, or at least a U.S.
- 57:20SPEAKER_07: traveler to this point.
- 57:21SPEAKER_07: So you've got no matter what, you've got something that you can relate to somebody, like for example, Madison just uh or excuse me, Maddie, uh told told me that she was, you know, originally from Wisconsin.
- 57:34SPEAKER_04: Oh, that's cool.
- 57:35SPEAKER_04: I didn't know that.
- 57:36SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 57:36SPEAKER_07: And so she moved here when she was about 10.
- 57:39SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 57:39SPEAKER_07: And so, but immediately you'd be like, Oh, yeah, okay.
- 57:42SPEAKER_07: Oh, yeah.
- 57:43SPEAKER_07: Have you guys been?
- 57:44SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 57:44SPEAKER_07: Oh, okay.
- 57:45SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 57:46SPEAKER_07: I was gonna say.
- 57:47SPEAKER_07: Um, so as you get ready for your junior year, uh, you're now driving, right?
- 57:52SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 57:52SPEAKER_07: And this is the first year for you to drive fully driving, correct.
- 57:55SPEAKER_07: And so you get to drive yourself to college when that starts.
- 57:58SPEAKER_07: Um as you get ready for your junior, what are you psyched about?
- 58:03SPEAKER_04: I'm really excited.
- 58:05SPEAKER_04: I I like learning.
- 58:07SPEAKER_04: I feel like people don't really like learning.
- 58:09SPEAKER_04: I think people think it's like tedious and just it takes a lot out of you.
- 58:13SPEAKER_04: But I like learning new things, and I really like learning new things that I like.
- 58:17SPEAKER_04: Um I'm taking a lot of classes that I really think interest me.
- 58:21SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 58:21SPEAKER_04: Um, and so I'm So like what?
- 58:23SPEAKER_04: Um I'm taking a so I did uh a summer class.
- 58:27SPEAKER_04: I took English 101, and now I have three more classes in the fall.
- 58:31SPEAKER_04: So and I'm taking a criminal justice class, and I'm really excited for that one.
- 58:35SPEAKER_04: And then in winter, I didn't haven't signed up for, but I'm looking at a healthcare class.
- 58:43SPEAKER_07: Just exploring a little bit of everything.
- 58:45SPEAKER_07: So do you have an idea of what you want to do after college, all that kind of stuff?
- 58:49SPEAKER_04: I want to be a coroner or something something with um healthcare.
- 58:55SPEAKER_04: Move towards healthcare, and then I because there's so many branches in healthcare.
- 58:58SPEAKER_04: So many.
- 58:59SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 58:59SPEAKER_04: And then I can move out and to do like more criminal justice things, and I can help detectives and police officers, because I'm always in love.
- 59:06SPEAKER_04: I've always loved it.
- 59:06SPEAKER_07: So you're a CSI type of a person then and you like to solve a crime around a dead body.
- 59:12SPEAKER_07: Uh oh yeah.
- 59:13SPEAKER_04: I mean, I mean, that's it's kind of a it's kind of a harsh thing to say.
- 59:16SPEAKER_07: Hey, it you know, we people die all all the time.
- 59:20SPEAKER_07: And so sometimes you gotta figure out what happened.
- 59:22SPEAKER_04: Why, yeah.
- 59:23SPEAKER_04: Uh like I've always like ever since I was a little kid, watching my mom like watch bones or any other like thing on TV.
- 59:29SPEAKER_04: I've always medical related.
- 59:31SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 59:32SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 59:32SPEAKER_04: I was actually named after Doc like Dr.
- 59:34SPEAKER_04: Cameron in house.
- 59:35SPEAKER_07: Oh.
- 59:35SPEAKER_04: So yeah.
- 59:36SPEAKER_04: So I was like, I've been here for a long time.
- 59:40SPEAKER_07: So do you get into the history then when you guys go and travel and go to all these parks and things like that?
- 59:45SPEAKER_04: And yeah, so this the West Coast is way, way less historical than the East Coast.
- 59:52SPEAKER_04: Like 100%.
- 59:53SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 59:54SPEAKER_04: It it like the the difference between here and there was like extra so crazy.
- 1:00:01SPEAKER_04: Every like there was so much history that you could learn, and I went to so many museums.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_04: I went to the history of natural like the National History Museum where I saw the Bill of Rights and like all of that.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_04: It was amazing.
- 1:00:11SPEAKER_04: We went to the MoMA, like it was like we love um aquariums and we love um museums.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_04: We hit like every we went to like um the Atlanta muse like where the two whale sharks are.
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_04: We we do that a lot.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_04: I feel like it's really different in the in the aspect of culture and the people and the vibes are completely different.
- 1:00:33SPEAKER_07: So, what do you want to do do you have a college picked out yet besides doing the running stars stuff?
- 1:00:38SPEAKER_04: No, but I have a like an idea.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_04: I kind of want to get I want to get my AA in Winacchi Valley College, and then I want to move on to a more um a four-year college, and I want to get my master's in whatever I want to do.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_04: Sure.
- 1:00:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_07: Sure.
- 1:00:51SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:00:52SPEAKER_07: Sounds good.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_07: Sounds like you've got the travel bug, so is that going to be forever part of your future too?
- 1:00:58SPEAKER_04: Um, so I feel like As long as you can afford it.
- 1:01:00SPEAKER_04: Oh, 100%.
- 1:01:01SPEAKER_04: I feel like it should.
- 1:01:02SPEAKER_04: Um for my senior year, like when people take a trip, I want to go to Italy or Greece, either one.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_04: It doesn't have architecture, that's it's so gorgeous.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_04: And I I really I I really want to.
- 1:01:15SPEAKER_07: So, okay, I gotta ask you this.
- 1:01:17SPEAKER_07: And I apologize to ask you this.
- 1:01:18SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_07: But do your friends kind of see you're kind of nerdly that way?
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_04: No.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_07: I mean, you're obviously vivacious and full of energy and full of life, but do they go, Cameron, how do you like that?
- 1:01:29SPEAKER_04: No.
- 1:01:30SPEAKER_07: Especially with your parents.
- 1:01:31SPEAKER_07: Hello.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_04: I mean, like, I feel like they don't I don't really talk about like the aspect of how I like it.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_04: I just kind of like, I'm like, oh yeah, I've been to like 49 states.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_04: Like I'm like Okay.
- 1:01:47SPEAKER_07: Okay, I got it now.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_07: So the two you need to go to Alaska and where?
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_04: Texas.
- 1:01:52SPEAKER_07: Texas.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:01:54SPEAKER_07: So when you gonna get Texas?
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_04: Texas will be all next la next year.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_04: So then I'll be eight.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_04: Like I'll be eighteen.
- 1:01:59SPEAKER_07: Um so then all before you graduate from high school.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_04: Yeah, just about.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_04: Well, just after I graduate in high school.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_07: Let's talk swimming.
- 1:02:06SPEAKER_07: Okay, what's your what's your what's your swim?
- 1:02:08SPEAKER_07: What do you do?
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_04: Um last year they made me do the 200 IM.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_04: They made you.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:02:13SPEAKER_04: They made me do the 200 I am and the 100 fly.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_04: Um, I do not like brushstroke.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_04: I will avoid it like the plague.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_04: It is I can't, I just can't really do it.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_04: Um, even though I do the I am and you gotta do that.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_04: Um it's my struggle stroke.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_04: But I like I like butterfly.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_07: What about it is your struggle stroke?
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 1:02:29SPEAKER_04: The kick.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_07: It's a weird deal.
- 1:02:31SPEAKER_07: You gotta be kind of a frog.
- 1:02:32SPEAKER_04: I don't like that.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_04: My I have hip problems and it doesn't really work for me.
- 1:02:35SPEAKER_04: Ah.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_07: Ouch.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_07: All right.
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_07: So are you ready for your first meet?
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_07: It's coming up here a little more in a week.
- 1:02:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_07: Uh in Moses Lake.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I I don't know if it's the invitational where you just do 50s.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:02:47SPEAKER_07: Uh I think that's what they told me.
- 1:02:48SPEAKER_07: Yes.
- 1:02:49SPEAKER_04: Well then, yeah.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_04: I'm ready for that.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:02:51SPEAKER_04: It the sports I do sometimes in the summer I'll do like golfing, but when I fully hit a sport back in full, it just comes back to me like memory.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_04: Um, and so then I just get back into it.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_07: So, what got you into golf?
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_04: My father.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_04: Uh so I my father's a really big golf guy, and he What's his first name?
- 1:03:10SPEAKER_04: Uh, John.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_04: Jonathan.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_07: Oh yeah.
- 1:03:12SPEAKER_04: Um, and he golfs a lot.
- 1:03:15SPEAKER_04: Like he goes up like everywhere to go golfing.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_04: And uh freshman year was the first year that I actually did golf fully.
- 1:03:25SPEAKER_04: Um, but I golfed like now and then with him and I didn't really care.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_04: And then I got into it, and then I was like, okay, this is this is okay.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_04: And then I did my software year, and then I went to state, and I'm like, oh my gosh, I'm pretty good at this.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_04: Let's continue to do this.
- 1:03:39SPEAKER_04: And so then I got new clubs.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_04: I just got new clubs and I need to work with them.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_07: Um so So how do you balance you're in the pool, you're on the course.
- 1:03:48SPEAKER_04: Um, so this is You know golf's in the spring.
- 1:03:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah, it's in the spring.
- 1:03:51SPEAKER_04: How I balance it, well, I mean, there's I mean, you can only spend so much time in the pool.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_07: Right.
- 1:03:57SPEAKER_04: And there's dirt and uh dirt and there's different times where you can do it, like in the winter or like when it's cold, you don't really want to golf.
- 1:04:04SPEAKER_04: Or like when it's rainy, you can't you don't really want to golf.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_04: So then I use that time and I swim because it's inside.
- 1:04:09SPEAKER_04: Um so I can it's it they're totally different sports.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_04: So it's kind of easy to balance them out.
- 1:04:15SPEAKER_04: Um the only worry I have is school, but I've I can fix that.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_07: And I have you have you combined the two sports?
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_04: Combined them?
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_07: Well, I think there's a golf thing that you can do in the pool that's like a floating green and all of that, and like a nerf ball or something along those lines.
- 1:04:31SPEAKER_04: So never, no, never.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:04:33SPEAKER_07: I mean well, maybe that's something you could invent.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_04: We I definitely could.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_07: And then that would pay all your travel expenses for the rest of your life.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_04: 100%.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_07: Mm-hmm.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_07: Now, as far as swimming on the golf course, I you know, water hazard, I guess you could.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:04:47SPEAKER_04: I mean, there's people down to Apple Tree and Yakima.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_07: Apple tree was amazing.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_07: Swim around the the apple sheets.
- 1:04:54SPEAKER_04: Oh, there's uh there's turtles and there's fish in there.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_04: Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_07: You can swim with the fishes.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_04: Good way.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_07: That not that you're in your eventual corner roll with dead people in there.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_07: So do you have a nickname?
- 1:05:08SPEAKER_07: That's what I'm asking everybody.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_07: Um Maddie said no.
- 1:05:11SPEAKER_07: She's I mean, she's M M.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_07: Yeah M and M kind of it.
- 1:05:16SPEAKER_04: I mean, yeah.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_04: Um, so for people call me Cam.
- 1:05:19SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:05:20SPEAKER_04: I don't really go by Cam, it's more Cameron.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_04: My parents, though, have a lot of odd ones.
- 1:05:26SPEAKER_04: I the main one is turkey.
- 1:05:28SPEAKER_04: Turkey sandwich.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_07: They call you turkey sandwich.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_07: Why?
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_07: No one knows.
- 1:05:34SPEAKER_07: You do you like turkey sandwiches?
- 1:05:36SPEAKER_04: I don't mind turkey sandwiches.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_04: I love turkey.
- 1:05:37SPEAKER_07: Okay.
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_04: Like that, like I prefer that over ham.
- 1:05:39SPEAKER_07: Mm-hmm.
- 1:05:40SPEAKER_04: I like turkey.
- 1:05:41SPEAKER_07: Yeah, same air.

- 1:05:44SPEAKER_07: Yeah.

- 1:05:48SPEAKER_04: Actually, it's actually not having them my long.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_04: When I was young, they used like monkey or jam.

- 1:06:03SPEAKER_07: They're gonna know now.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_07: But it's true though, with a nickname, you can't give one to yourself.
- 1:06:10SPEAKER_04: Oh no.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_04: No, because then it's just like No, then you're like, yeah, I call myself no.
