- 0:06Welcome to Kids Learning Lab, a learning podcast made just for
- 0:10kids. In this episode, we'll be
- 0:16learning about the California Gold Rush of 1849, in which
- 0:20hundreds of thousands of people rushed to California to find
- 0:23gold in Sacramento. In this episode, we have a
- 0:25special guest, Miss Margaret Rockdale, who will help us learn
- 0:28more about the Gold Rush. But before we get to the
- 0:31interview, let's learn a little more about the Gold Rush.
- 0:34Most people did not travel by land to get to California.
- 0:38Here's an ad from 1850 advertising the Clipper ship
- 0:41from the harbor of Boston, MA to San Francisco, CA.
- 0:45But before I tell you more about the ship routes, let's learn
- 0:48about the Panama Canal. The Panama Canal was built in
- 0:51the 1900s and connected to the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
- 0:55However, the Gold Rush had been 50 years before the Panama
- 0:59Canal, so people had to sail below the tip of South America,
- 1:03as seen in the map here. If you look on the map, you can
- 1:06see a green line in the middle of North America and South
- 1:08America. That's where the Panama Canal is
- 1:11today. The purple line shows the ship
- 1:14route people going to the Gold Rush had to take.
- 1:17If they had the canal, they could have saved a lot of time.
- 1:20But what was the gold rush? Who discovered the gold rush?
- 1:24To learn more about the California Gold Rush, let's
- 1:26start the interview. So can you tell us a little
- 1:29about yourself and how you became interested in teaching
- 1:32history? Yes.
- 1:35So my name is Mark Arco and I've been a teacher about 9 years all
- 1:41together teaching who was Alison and I was interested in growing
- 1:44up and once I got to 7th grade where we stayed in medieval
- 1:48history, history became 3. When I teach mystery, I come
- 1:53live meaning that I'm most and then other and it's hopeful
- 1:58being myself OK? So why should people learn about
- 2:01the Gold rush today? It helps us understand lasting
- 2:08social, economic and environmental consequences of
- 2:12the rapid development of the West.
- 2:15OK, so now let's start and learn about the early Gold Rush.
- 2:19So what was life like in California before the Gold Rush?
- 2:25California was a diverse, sparsely populated region
- 2:28dominated by California Indians. Once the California emission
- 2:32system was started, economy changed from 1 based on hunt
- 2:35gathering, 1. Based on farming, the swimming.
- 2:39The California Indians lived in Waltz in the ways of life,
- 2:44taking away from them. Don't Mexico wins independence
- 2:47from Spain controlled California and secularized so that they
- 2:52were no longer the economy then changed from 1 based farming to
- 2:58be based on ranching and created especially was given away as
- 3:01land grants where most of the California Indians lived and
- 3:06were teachers from the United States started once fur traders
- 3:12traveled further W to find more people to meet.
- 3:17OK, so how did news about gold spread so quickly across the
- 3:21country? Well, a man named Stan Brandon
- 3:27traveled from San Tisco to diploma see if the stories about
- 3:30gold being found were true. When he returned to the city, he
- 3:33held up a bottle of silver spoon dust invented St. sailing gold
- 3:37gold gold from near American River.
- 3:40What was the stories were proven true in the United States and
- 3:43liberal world? Can't California cricket rich by
- 3:47finding gold? OK, so who first discovered gold
- 3:50in California? James Marshall, who was a
- 3:54Carpenter hired by John I guess the sawmill found gold on the
- 3:59banks of the New York River in Coloma, CA on January 24th,
- 4:031848. So what was daily life like for
- 4:08miners during the gold rush? Miners stayed in mining camps
- 4:13where they would rest, eat food. These mining camps were used as
- 4:16protection wind and cold weather.
- 4:19Despite the trash, the miners would entertain themselves by
- 4:23art books if we could find them, playing music and songs, being
- 4:28on top of them. Sunday is usually our day of
- 4:30rest mining. They would be spent doing other
- 4:34tours. Miners often worked six days a
- 4:37week, and many got up before dawn and actually moved to jerk
- 4:40to see. So did women or children play
- 4:43roles in the gold rush, and if So, what were they?
- 4:47Women ran businesses and some mined for gold themselves.
- 4:51Women found opportunities in cooking, laundry and hotels,
- 4:54where they often would make money or make more money than
- 4:58the miners. Children assisted with pores
- 5:00like gathering wood, intending to camp, while some worked
- 5:03alongside the digging. So why did some people get rich
- 5:07while most miners didn't? Only some people were able to
- 5:12actually get rich in the gold rush because it was so difficult
- 5:15to find gold due to the fact that they required so much
- 5:18physical labor. Even though not everyone was in
- 5:20it were too quickly. Many minors decided to stay in
- 5:22California. Those decided to stay in
- 5:25California. It's not opportunity to spread
- 5:26new businesses based on the fact that there was a fool's
- 5:29philanthropistic necessities. Levi Strauss entrepreneur
- 5:33created new jeans with Taylor named Stricken Davis, who
- 5:36designed the jeans and last a long time.
- 5:40The jeans were made and had metal at the corners of the
- 5:43Parkinson's shop. It wasn't just an Asian or like
- 5:48in California for nerds, African Americans like kids also
- 5:53starting to resist. He opened a shoe store at
- 5:55Sanskrit and Cold Rush at the Mirror of the Tax First
- 5:59newspaper and California's Americans.
- 6:01And he also used some of the money he carried or earned by
- 6:06the Freedom African American schools.
- 6:08OK. And how did the gold rush affect
- 6:11immigration and diversity in California?
- 6:14Because a lot of people in California are diverse these
- 6:16days. Yes, because so many people
- 6:19looking from all over the world to California during the gold
- 6:22rush, population became very divert.
- 6:25There were some miners who felt that only people from the United
- 6:27States had the right search for gold.
- 6:29They threatened to harm you to bring Star Wars class laws that
- 6:32will move their rights. So how did the Gold Rush shape
- 6:35California's culture and economy?
- 6:39Overall, because of the fact that people from all over the
- 6:42world being the California to the before gold, California's
- 6:46population became more diverse. There were people of nearly
- 6:49every race, religion, and hacker in California during this time.
- 6:54These immigrants from around the world were at different key
- 6:56students Language most people lied to people groups means
- 7:01their concepts. The gold rush changed the
- 7:03economy house traditions due to a sensible rich.
- 7:07There are many people or many workers that mined gold while
- 7:11other started businesses that provided goods services to the
- 7:14miners and other consumers. So if you were alive in 1849,
- 7:19would you go to California for the gold rush or would you
- 7:23search for gold or do something else?
- 7:25If I were alive in 39 going to California, the gold rush and
- 7:29intrigue me because the opportunities to get rich.
- 7:32However, even if I wasn't able to get rich time for gold, I was
- 7:35still when you go to California, like you potentially have a
- 7:37better life. What my life was like before and
- 7:40having the chance to start to having the chance to still make
- 7:43business or passionate about. OK.
