[upbeat music] Hello, hello, hello, and howdy.
• 0:20
It's Full Spectrum Cycling number 138. Yeah. Whoa. Whoa. [laughs] Try to think- We got some-... something about 138. Right. Mm. Like, uh, THX 1138. We have to wait 1,000 more shows to get the George Lucas reference.
• 0:37
Yeah, right. All right. I will step away from the sci-fi nerd world. That's JK, everybody. Uh- In case you don't rec- Hello, nerd, nerds... recognize [laughs] that voice. Okay. To- Tony's nodding across the- [laughs]...
• 0:49
across the way over there. Smile and nod. Smile and nod. Yeah. Smile and wave, boys. Great wave. Right on. Um, what the heck's going on? We had a, we had a party here last Friday. Yeah. Party, party, party. Week ago.
• 1:04
Boy. We really whipped that trap into s- into shape in no time, man. [laughs] That was very, very impressive. That was pretty crazy. I, I, I totally- I didn't think it was gonna happen... I totally tip my hat.
• 1:12
It looked amazing. Oh, right. It- I, I was like, "Whoa. Hey, now." Yeah. [laughs] I mentioned it to Brandon today, and he was like, "Yeah, y'all always clean up when company's coming over." [laughs] Yeah, right, right.
• 1:21
True, true, true. Well, the key to the whole thing was shoving everything in the back room- You find the one closet-... closing the garage door up- Yeah. [laughs]...
• 1:27
so it's like you don't wanna open that garage door up 'cause stuff might just tumble back into the room. Right. Yeah, cartoon style. [laughs] Yeah, it worked out well. Boy, I...
• 1:37
We had many, many, many hundreds, 6, 700 people probably. It was a lot of people. I know that, uh, the folks at House of Rad raised over 100K for Feeding America Southeast Wisconsin. Nice. Geez. Pretty outstanding. Yeah.
• 1:51
Apparently, every dollar gets four meals somehow. Nice. I don't know. That seems like a lot of meals for a buck. That's, that's pretty cool. Yeah.
• 1:59
Yeah, and, you know, being in the same building, it was nice that we got a little overflow activity. Wow. Sorta like when we used to have the parties over at the Nut factory. Someone actually bought me a beer. Oh, sweet.
• 2:10
That was pretty cool. I thank you. Someone not one of us, like a random? [laughs] I think it was one of us, but, I mean, suddenly there was a beer in my hand. I mean, all right. Yeah. I, I grabbed a couple. I just...
• 2:21
They had- It was-... not great beer. Uh, Milwaukee Brew County. Yeah, it was- By definition, not great beer.
• 2:28
Right, and it was- Gonna, you know, bringing this back to, once again, I don't know how he keeps popping up, but Dinardo Colucci- [laughs]... who always says Milwaukee is awesome at celebrating the mediocre.
• 2:39
Yeah, for sure. And that is, you know, all good restaurants go out of business. Mediocre restaurants live on forever. Yeah. That's definitely a- It's weird... it's the mediocrity. It's true.
• 2:48
It was, uh, it was a good event, and I, I would hope we can do another one one of these days. Yeah. It's looking like the, uh, the showroom is gonna be more of an event space than an- [laughs] Bike shop...
• 3:00
than an actual retail bike shop, at least for the time being 'cause- Yeah... it's just how this building is working out right now. We may, we may maneuver around in here. I don't know.
• 3:11
We'll see what happens down the road. Maybe. There's gonna be changes afoot. That's what you get, I guess, when you have a huge, old factory and a bunch of people that wanna do stuff in it. [laughs] Right, right.
• 3:24
Yeah, man. Uh, hmm. Getting colder. Right on. Yeah. Ghost train's coming back apparently. Yeah. I think- It was broken down for a while. Was it? I... Well, there was a bunch- It was, uh-...
• 3:34
of people out there, and every daylight savings time, they change the timing of it so it's earlier in the day. Yeah. Yeah. Well, yeah, I think it's on a monthly. Now it, now it's- T- Tuesday, I saw it at 7:15. Yeah.
• 3:44
It's supposed to be 7- Oh... or 7:10. Yeah. There's eastbound and westbound, so you get them at different times. Yeah. Oh, cool. It was actually way, way cooler than I expected it to be. Yeah.
• 3:54
Usually the lights, like, stoplight there stays red and- Yeah... people sit in their cars and watch it. And you have to watch it. And- [laughs] You don't really have a choice. Yeah.
• 4:01
No, but the, the audio effects, too, of the train coming and going- Yeah... and the sound of the cars going over the rail, you know, the tracks, is- Right... just very... You know, it, it felt like you were on a train.
• 4:13
Yeah. And it's got enough Doppler effect with where they put the speakers. It- It does sound like it's- Absolutely... getting further away. Absolutely. Yeah. Yeah. It's an interesting thing.
• 4:21
And occasionally, yeah, they'll, they have a couple, like, special ones. They have a, a circus parade one. Oh, nice. Yeah. Soundtrack that they fly on that one.
• 4:29
It's a little bit longer, but it's, you know, all of a sudden you hear, you know, you got the [laughs] Nice. So that- Little elephant trump- trumpeting. Yeah.
• 4:35
[laughs] So if you're, if you're out riding your bike on the Oak Leaf trail at all- Oh, it's awesome when you're on top... you wanna see it. Yeah, when you're on the, on the bridge- Yeah... it's awesome.
• 4:42
It goes- But- Where it goes over Capital Drive and, uh- Yeah... Shorewood is, is- Just stop and-... where this happens... chill out and enjoy the- Right from my front, front porch, though- Yeah... I get to hear it. Yeah.
• 4:50
As long as I'm outside, of course, but- Right, right... it's just like, "Ah, there we go." But it was o- it was offline for about a year-ish. There was something wro- COVID. It had COVID. Something.
• 4:59
Nah, yeah, probably or something. Yeah. There was something- A tree... broken on it and they- Driver, you know... couldn't agree to fix it the right way or- They wanted-... something. I don't know...
• 5:07
they wanted to do the Driver Eight REM song, but they said no. [laughs] Oh. Hey train conductor, take a break. That's me in the corner. [laughs] That- Oh, wait. What was [laughs]... Who, who did the damn song?
• 5:24
Ah, local guy. McCurdy. He did the Michael Safe song. Oh, I will bring it up later. All right. [laughs] All right. I just heard it recently and it was damn funny. I haven't listened to that guy for a while. Pat McCurdy.
• 5:36
I know. Man About Town. I know. I, I'm reaching way back on that one. Did you see that, uh, article I sent you two humans about the, uh, e-bike issues in LA? Just about there being a lot more accidents.
• 5:50
Yeah, and well, and, you know, the sales are way up, but they're not educating people on how to ride them and there's the, the quintessential idiot that gets on one and goes 30 miles an hour and doesn't have a helmet on.
• 6:03
You know, stuff like that. Yeah. I, well- I think I would like to, like, navigate- Los Angeles on a bike, in theory Not an e-bike...
• 6:13
but I don't think, I think it just would be just death wish I wanna have, I would like to be on something- Everyone out there loves their cars... something be an XE or Clunker. Clunker.
• 6:24
Clunker would be an LA bike in my eyes. Well, there's a, there's a pretty good community of cyclists out there, just it's such a, you know, spread out area that there's, you know- Yeah...
• 6:35
you, you, it's hard to get from island to island in the city itself. Right. So there's l- little pockets of activity. Sure, sure. Yeah. All I need to say to you is Scottie Pippen, baby. Scottie Pippen. It's a big 'un.
• 6:47
Big city over there. So, uh, Polar Roll's coming up. Polar Roll. I only say that 'cause Lunz was talking about it at the, the event, and registration was last Saturday, and it's already full. Wow. Yeah.
• 7:04
Yeah, it went quick. But there is a... So that's for the mass start. They capped it at 400 riders. I, I don't know if that's a lot less than it used to be, or if that's- That's the one him and Chuck always go to?
• 7:16
Yeah, up in Marquette. Yeah. And but they're doing a- an extended version this year, again, sort of like they did with the, the COVID event, that they're doing a two-month thing where you go up and ride- Oh, cool...
• 7:28
the course and get the experience. I guess that's what the EX stands for maybe, experience. Experience. So there's a link to the, uh, Polar Roll thing in the show notes.
• 7:39
If you check out the show notes, that's, that's where you'll find that. So go to them. Go, go there now. Go now. You go. You go now. Now. You go now. You read letters.
• 7:51
[laughs] I don't think I talked, I don't think I, don't think I knew about this last week. I was, woke up in the middle of the night, so I usually just go out into the living room and lay on the couch and
• 8:01
surf the web or see how my crypto's doing or something, and so I don't wake up Wendy. But there was this sound. I couldn't figure out where this sound was coming from, this kinda growling, grunty, grunty sound. Ooh.
• 8:16
I didn't know if it was- Oh... the fridge was going bad or if the... 'Cause we use a fan to get a little white noise action. If a bearing was going bad, and I'm like, "What the heck is that?"
• 8:24
My daughter discovered the rock tumbler in the basement and fired that thing up again. So- No way... [laughs] so it's downstairs doing its- [growls]...
• 8:31
whatever, two or three-week cycle of just grinding away down in the basement. [laughs] I have, I've, I, it's gotta be 15-plus years old, 'cause that was when she was very young.
• 8:42
You didn't see the power go down or anything, the lights dim or anything when that thing fired up? Well, I forgot how small they are. I th- I, I remember as a kid they were as big as, like, you know, a car. Yeah, right.
• 8:50
Now they're really about the size of a 12-ounce mug. [laughs] They're not, they're not doing anything. I mean, they're obviously working, but yeah, they're not drawn like the old ones. Right, right.
• 8:59
No, that's- Washing machine tipped, you know. Yeah, there we go. That's what we'll do with the old, uh, the old washing machine when we finally get a new one.
• 9:07
[laughs] Which you'll hook it up to a bike then and bike pulley it. You gotta do that continuously for two weeks straight. Keep your kids busy, man. [laughs] Little Daniel can be on that thing. All right.
• 9:18
Go, go for an away. He can probably do it, too, so yeah. So that was that noise, and I f- I'm glad I figured out what that one was, otherwise it would be driving me nuts still. Short trip. Yeah. Ah. Right over there.
• 9:33
[gobbles] No nu- Tony didn't bring any nuts today, but he sure as heck brought a lot of other stuff today from, from the Helds. Had to stop at the Helds.
• 9:41
What I did not bring, and you guys should, I mean, not that you would do it anyway, but... So one time I got his Carolina Reaper jerky, or their Carolina J- Reaper jerky. I happened to be looking at the label,
• 9:53
and there was no Carolina Reaper in it, merely ghost. And I'm like, "Well, that's not a Carolina Reaper."
• 10:00
So this time I checked the label before I purchased, and it has its own fancy new label now, and I'm like, "Uh-oh." Well, I tried it right before I came to the, uh, do the podcast, and, um, it's entirely wrong.
• 10:17
Even Cleon put it away. [laughs] 'Cause it's on the hot side? It, it's just, it's hot for hot sake. My mouth wa- I, but I will say this. I, it took me a minute to get through the stick I pulled out, and I said I'd do it.
• 10:30
I wasn't gonna put it back in the bag. Bag. And I ate it, and after I got, like, two-thirds of the way through it, it actually became pretty good. Huh. But my mouth did not stop watering for about 10 minutes. Yeah.
• 10:47
That's why I'm a teriyaki fan. I can't do- Yeah... that hot stuff. But we also have, you know, Reg, we have snack sticks. We've got cheese curds. We've got lonjagas. We've got hot stick jerky.
• 11:00
There's sweet- That's a, that's a- Sweet... plethora of Held- And that's just the start of it... stuff. I think I'm remembering it. I'm not even looking at it. Sweet, bourbon, chipotle, bacon cheese curds. Yes, you did.
• 11:12
Wow, you- Yes... nailed it. Nailed it. You nailed it. [laughs] Uh, I did find out something very interesting this, that maybe everyone knows but me and I'm just ignorant, but they were selling both hot dogs and wieners.
• 11:24
Difference being? Right? I, I don't know. Casing? Some- something with the casing perhaps? No. Wieners have garlic. Really? Huh. And I'm like, I did not know this. I will take several of each.
• 11:38
[laughs] Tried, tried them both tonight- As my punishment. [laughs]... before I came here. Yeah. I, I, they were both very good. I will learn what the difference is. [laughs] Yeah.
• 11:46
But I say the wiener- They'll lock me in a closet... the hot dog in my opinion was a little better even though it didn't have the garlic. Huh. Well, I'm a crappy hot dog guy.
• 11:54
I love an Oscar Mayer's or just a- I have no problem with an Oscar Mayer either... the, the worst dogs you can buy, that's my favorite thing on a crappy bun. Yeah. I, I do like a good dog too, though.
• 12:01
I respect a quality dog. One that has some snap- Vanguard-... in the casing. Vanguard's dog with the cheddar on it. Ooh, the Milwaukee burger, the Milwaukee dog, ooh, that's good So when Dino's reopens- Yeah... is there,
• 12:16
I, I can't remember if any, if one of the guys running it has a tether to Vanguard or not. I don't believe so. I can't remember. No, it's Buddha- I would-... and Brahm. I don't know that either one of them have- Okay...
• 12:27
any kind of stake in it. I had heard the original rumor- Right. Same... was that they were gonna be part of it. Yeah. But no, they bought all of, or, or a chunk of the Dino's recipes.
• 12:36
I don't know how they're pulling this off legally, because neither one of them are from the family. And I was told if you buy a, a restaurant, it has to meet modern code unless it's owned by a family member. Don't know.
• 12:50
But I suppose we're not talking about... I mean, I'm excited for it to reopen. Yeah, yeah. I'm excited for them to have their wings- I just thought there was that tether, like a- You know? Yeah... tendril.
• 12:56
It sounds like it's gonna be a pretty neat little place. Hell yeah. I- any new restaurant that's decent is more than welcome in River West, 'cause we, that's one thing we kinda lack.
• 13:05
Well, we bled a bunch, but, uh- Yeah... hey, guess what? Hey, hey, hey. Hey. I'm gonna push, I'm gonna push a button here. Oh. Oh, oh. Wait, what? Hey, welcome to the radio program, caller. Uh, I gotta push a button.
• 13:15
There we go. It's doing its thing. It did its thing. Howdy. Hi. Who's on the line? Hey, what's up? It's Big Sexy, y'all. Big Sexy. Yes, what's up? Haven't heard from you for a while. River West, man.
• 13:31
I've been thinking about y'all, man, for real. It's, it's, it's a good place to be, especially right now, doing a show- I'm, I'm-... talking to you on the phone... I'm in, I'm in Paul's, I'm in Paul's Valley, Oklahoma.
• 13:46
Okay. And okay, L-A to M-A. And we're getting, we're getting a little bit of weather. We're getting a little bit of weather tonight. Are ya? Paul's Valley. I, is that- Yeah, um-...
• 13:55
is that near anything recognizable, or is it out in the middle of nowhere? Well, it's, it's, it's about, it's about 40 miles south of Oklahoma City, about 120 miles north of Dallas. Oh, okay.
• 14:11
[laughs] Gonna make OK jokes all day long. And I'm approaching the Texas border. LA. So since we last talked, you, you've, uh, gone through a couple of more state capitals. Yep, Lincoln and Topeka.
• 14:26
What's the, what's the count now? Uh, oh, uh, uh, 30. Awesome. 30. Uh, Oklahom- Oklahoma City was 30. Three-fifths of the way there. Yep.
• 14:41
And, uh, and yeah, um, everything's been going great. Heather's doing fine. Heather got a spa treatment in Kansas City thanks to my uncle. Ooh, la, la. Nice. Um- Did sh- she get new shoes or...?
• 14:56
Well, um, uh, there, there were, the, the, the left, the left rim was, uh, was missing some spokes and bent, and, uh, we got new brake pads and we got the brake adjusted and, uh, shit like that.
• 15:11
This old-timer that runs the bike shop in, uh, um, god, I can't remember the name of the town in Nebraska at the moment, but north of Lincoln, uh, gave us, uh, literally gave us three tires
• 15:26
and, uh, two pedals, new pedals. And, uh, the problem is though, the, the back tires, they're the right size for the rim, but man, were they a bitch to get on. Oh, yeah. Some tires suck, man. So- Yep...
• 15:43
and I, I, I, I, I'm not looking forward to, um, having to, having to change that tire if I, if I, if I get a flat, but flats haven't been a thing for us this year. So how many miles are you from finishing up this season?
• 15:59
Um, I'd say my, uh, um, the route I'm gonna take, I think I'm about 500 or so from New Orleans. Well, that's a drop in the bucket com- Considering the route I'm gonna take, but- [laughs] I'm sorry?
• 16:13
Saying that's a drop in the bucket compared to what you've done this year so far. Right. Yeah, yeah. I'm, I'm looking, I'm, I'm just over 6,000 miles this year. Nice. That's amazing.
• 16:25
And, and remember, we all rode Heather, so I think that's a- Yeah, that's, that's-... that's like t- 30,000 miles on any other bike. Right. [laughs] Right. I'm like, "Hey." Well, I don't know where there's a ferry boat.
• 16:36
I'm like, "Hey, slow down. What the fuck, yo?" [laughs] It's not just about speed. It's just about, uh, perseverance. Right. Right. Right. Well, and, and, um, Oklahoma is not...
• 16:50
Oh, well, Kansas, Nebraska, and Oklahoma are not as flat as you might think. [laughs] Oh, f- for sure. Yeah. I'm, I've ridden out there before. I know that they...
• 17:01
It kinda looks flat from the car window going down I-80- [laughs]... or 70 or whatever that is, but it's, it's not flat when you're going- Yeah... going from north to south or whatever. Right.
• 17:11
And, and, and like, and like the, the, the, the uphills can be very long. Like, like, uh, I, I was, I think I was walking for a good seven miles the other day just g- just because it was uphill.
• 17:24
I'm either, I'm either working my ass off on the pedals or walking. It's like, it, it's like what's the difference? If I'm, if I'm pedaling my ass off to get up to walking speed, why am I not just walking? Yeah.
• 17:34
[laughs] H- how have the, uh, how have the locals been treating you? Oh, absolutely wonderful. I, I'll tell you what. I had a little bit of a, um, little bit of trouble in, in, uh, uh, Sioux City, Iowa.
• 17:50
This lady was upset with me 'cause I was drinking beer and I said, "Oh, no problem. No problem. I'll go somewhere else."
• 17:58
And then I went somewhere else and I, you know, I went to a park or something and I, and I, you know. I'm like, "Oh, crap, I'm want a beer." I went back up to the place and said... And she wouldn't sell me beer.
• 18:08
I'm like, "Wait a minute, I d- I did what you told me to do. I left." You know? What the hell? Now you won't sell me beer? [laughs] And, and, and she like, she, she had already called the cops at the sight of me.
• 18:19
Oh, boy. So I had to, uh, I had to, I had to do some smooth talking with some Sioux City, Iowa police officers, but it was all right.
• 18:28
[laughs] Yeah, I think, I don't know if you remember- But other than that- I think last time you called in, our, our buddy Chris from Lincoln, Nebraska was in the studio, but it was a, that was a little bit of a shit show show there.
• 18:39
[laughs] I believe he referred to it as Sewer City. [laughs] Yeah. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Mo- most of my time in Iowa, which was mostly in, uh, tw- the 2020 area, it was not pleasant. Huh.
• 18:56
I, I, I don't, I, I don't have anything against Iowa, really I don't, but I mean, it, it, it just, yeah, um, like, uh, I would, uh, rather go back to New Jersey. Probably just gotta get to the right spots in Iowa.
• 19:10
I do remember spending- Yeah, well, Keo- [laughs] Say it again? Keokuk, Iowa was, was wonderful. Keokuk. Right. Right. Keokuk, Iowa, those guy- those people took care of me.
• 19:24
And then, uh, um, and then you have a place like Sioux City, which, uh, pretty much just ran me out of town. I'm like, "You know, fuck you." You know? At least I'm on wheels, you know? Mm-hmm.
• 19:36
I can, I can get out of here if I have to. Right on. So you're gonna head back to New Orleans for the winter, and then are you already planning 2022? Yes, and, um, I'm, I'm, I'm really on the fence here.
• 19:53
The one thing I do know is I'm gonna do an experiment, um, when, uh, 2022- 2022 rolls around, and it comes about Easter time, it's time to get out of New Orleans for the, for the summer. I am putting Heather in a box.
• 20:10
Okay. Where Heather goes in said box is still yet to be determined, but I am not starting in New Orleans this year. I'm gonna,
• 20:25
  I'm gonna ship her or put her on an Amtrak or put her on a Greyhound, and start from, if, what, and there's, there's three places I'm thinking of. I'm either gonna start from Wooster, Ohio;
• 20:41
or Minneapolis, Minnesota; or Reno, Nevada. Oh, boy. Well, that, Reno's far afield out there. Yeah. Um, well, my brother, my brother, uh, works for Tesla in Reno, uh, my, my, uh, youngest brother. Um,
• 20:58
and, uh, every time I talk to him on the phone, he, he, he's talking about his, his newest job promotion. I'm like, "Well, Jesus, you're gonna be Elon Musk's roommate in no time flat."
• 21:08
So maybe I'll, uh, ship Heather to Reno and, uh, spend some time with him, and hit, uh, Carson City, Sacramento, Salem, and Olympia. That sounds like a good trip out there. Yeah. Yeah. I, I, I've been to all those towns.
• 21:21
Those are all good places, and beaut- Yeah... beautiful scenery. And, uh, I mean, you know, so,
• 21:27
but i- if I, if I get, if I get her shipped to Wooster, Ohio, then I will be, uh, definitely planning on coming to River West 24. Oh, sweet. River West, we'll, we'll have you back.
• 21:42
That's, that's, uh, um, that, that's what's, that's what's bringing me is, is I really wanna come back and see you guys there in River West, I really do.
• 21:49
Mayb- maybe I won't do it this year, but I'll definitely do it, it'll, it won't be two years before I come back there, so. All right. Well, we're gonna keep- We're here for you... we're gonna keep the show rolling.
• 22:01
I'm glad you gave us a holler. It's like I said, it's been a while since you... Uh, looks like the last time you called in was in September, so heck, you've been, you've been rolling pretty good. Yep.
• 22:10
So y- Well, I called one night, and apparently you guys weren't, weren't live or something like that, so I was like, you know. Oh, but I, I wanna, I wanna shout out to Tim Holtz. Okay.
• 22:20
Um, Tim Holtz put a, put a awesome donation on my latest Fa- Facebook fundraiser. It, it got, it got me a million things I needed, and, uh, and, and the, um,
• 22:32
and the confidence that I, I have people out there that I might not even know very well th- that, that, uh, support what I'm doing, and, and I, and I love that very much.
• 22:42
Tim Holtz, uh, you're the bestest, and, uh, it all, it all went to good stuff. Right on. Is, is he a- Right. And the, and the country's right, and the country's right as steak. Is he a New Orleans guy?
• 22:54
No, no, um, uh, he, he says he listens to your, he li- says he listens to your podcast. Oh, yeah, I think I know who he is.
• 23:01
I'm just trying to r- place him, but I thought he was from Milwaukee, and I think he might have moved to New Orleans. I'm not positive, but, uh- He, he, he might have roots in New Or...
• 23:11
I, I, I really, uh, just, I m- I messaged him, I messaged him personally on, on, like Facebook Messenger, and I, I thanked him very much. He was like, "Well, when you call into the podcast, it makes my day."
• 23:20
