- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:10through Thursday. I'm your host, Lorne Meisner,
- 0:13the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:18Welcome back to Mini Scroll, everyone.
- 0:21I have some very exciting news. Overnight.
- 0:24Centennial World, our TikTok account hit 10 million likes.
- 0:29Crazy. That feels like a giant
- 0:32milestone for us, especially because we are such a small team
- 0:36and, you know, we don't have outside funding or anything like
- 0:40that. This has been like a
- 0:41bootstrapped from the ground up. So a very exciting milestone for
- 0:45our little brand. All right, let's just get right
- 0:48in to the stories for today. OK, so unfortunately I have two
- 0:53stories today you guys, about Jeffree Star.
- 0:57I can't believe I'm saying his name in mini scroll, let alone
- 1:01the fact that I have two stories about him.
- 1:04I cannot believe that he has somehow weaseled his way back
- 1:08into the zeitgeist. And I think that's on purpose.
- 1:11Like I think he is trying to and I don't think we should let him.
- 1:14But I'm going to tell you what is happening.
- 1:16This is me being part of the problem, but I have to keep you
- 1:20in the know. OK so the first story is that
- 1:22Jeffrey Star has come for Michaela Naguera over her new
- 1:25Patrick TA eyeshadow review. OK so Patrick Taw he just
- 1:29launched these new eyeshadow duos that are formulated with
- 1:32Pearl pigments. They are so beautiful I
- 1:36literally gasped when I saw them.
- 1:38I am desperate to try them. I don't know if I can justify
- 1:43the $42.00 USD 42 USD price tag, which is part of the
- 1:50controversy. I'm going to get into it.
- 1:51But yes, they cost $42.00 for two tiny little eye shadows.
- 1:56But they look so good, like I'm a makeup girlie.
- 1:58So I think I'm going to need to try them anyways.
- 2:01So Michaela, she did a review of them on TikTok.
- 2:04I think it was like a week or two ago, right when they were
- 2:06like coming out and she was obsessed with them as everyone
- 2:10has been who has tried them for the most part.
- 2:12But Patrick has been getting a lot of backlash for this price.
- 2:16He actually had to make a TikTok like addressing why they cost
- 2:20that much. He said there's no filler in the
- 2:22pigment. He said that, you know, they
- 2:24just were expensive to manufacture because it's a
- 2:26unique formula. So it seems like after Michaela
- 2:29saw the complaints over the price, she then decided to make
- 2:33this second video comparing the Patrick Taw eyeshadow duos with
- 2:39an ELF dupe. Patrick Taw just dropped these
- 2:42$42.00 eyeshadow duos, but Elf said hold my dream and I don't
- 2:47give a shit how you spend your money.
- 2:49That's none of my business. But $42.00 for two eye shadows
- 2:52is insane. OK, it's straight up insane.
- 2:55But the elf, you can get one for six dollars or two for 12, and
- 2:58I've heard that these are incredible.
- 3:00And I don't think they're like an official dupe, but she was
- 3:04using them as a dupe essentially.
- 3:05They're similar. They look similar to Patricks.
- 3:08And she claimed in her review that elves were almost just as
- 3:12good as Patricks. Like she didn't really give a
- 3:14conclusion. And she also didn't really
- 3:16compare like Patricks she rarely used his in her review, but she
- 3:20was like elf did it again, insinuating that if you want the
- 3:24Patrick Taw ones, you can get the elf ones instead and they
- 3:27will be just as good or quite similar.
- 3:29And this really set people off because Michaela already has
- 3:32this reputation of not being trustworthy and she also has
- 3:37worked with elf in the past. So people were kind of like,
- 3:41well, this was quite the switch up first of all, from your first
- 3:44review of the Patrick Taw eye shadows.
- 3:45Now you're coming back and saying these don't seem worth
- 3:47the price. Like get the elf once instead.
- 3:49That's like what her video kind of insinuated she didn't like
- 3:52outwardly say that. And people are like you work
- 3:55with elf so like can we even trust this?
- 3:58So Jeffrey, he has talked shit about Michaela on and off over
- 4:02the years on his TikTok lives and he specifically addressed
- 4:06this Patrick TA versus elf review and he did not say very
- 4:10nice things about Michaela. And one of the things that has
- 4:13gone like absolutely viral that he said about her on this live
- 4:16is he said that she has Timu orange hands from her fake tan.
- 4:20But. Mr. Timu.
- 4:22Orange Hands are the ones that gave her the fucking credibility
- 4:25to keep going. Then a couple days after
- 4:27Michaela addressed that exact comment, she let us know that
- 4:32she was listening, that she heard what Jeffrey said about
- 4:35her, and she actually referenced her Timo orange tanned hands in
- 4:40a get ready with me terms of. The color I am trying to match
- 4:42my. And now today she has responded
- 4:46to Jeffreys claims that she is not trustworthy and to just like
- 4:50the general kind of backlash around these reviews.
- 4:53She made a new video and she claimed that the video she
- 4:57posted with the Patrick Todd versus ELF that she made $0.00
- 5:00from it. I don't know if that's true
- 5:02because she's definitely part of the creator fund, but
- 5:05regardless, like she was not sponsored for that video.
- 5:08She says that she does not have an ongoing like ambassadorship
- 5:11endorsement with ELF. I think the missing piece here,
- 5:15however, is that she might not have an active campaign with ELF
- 5:19right now, but she has worked with them in the past.
- 5:22It's the same thing as when we talked about like why would Tart
- 5:25or all these beauty brands send influencers on these lavish
- 5:28branch trips? Well, it's like they might not
- 5:30be continually working with, I don't know, Alex Earl, like Tart
- 5:34might not be paying Alex Earl a yearly salary to talk good about
- 5:38the brand. But you know, she's going to
- 5:40speak well about the brand ongoing if they send her first
- 5:44class to Dubai, you know, So it's kind of the same thing.
- 5:47It's like because Michaela has worked with Elf in the past, you
- 5:50know, I'm sure she wants to work with them again.
- 5:52She will probably wants to keep working with brands that pay her
- 5:54bills. So she's going to be more
- 5:57inclined to give a positive review of a product of theirs.
- 6:01And if she gives a negative review, then they're less likely
- 6:04to work with her in the future. So I think the problem with
- 6:09Michaela and like I think why she switches up so much, it
- 6:12almost reminds me of what we've talked about with Mr. Beast
- 6:17where like her number one priority is virality and views
- 6:22over integrity. So she made this video in my
- 6:26opinion, comparing the Patrick taught eye shadows with elves
- 6:29and I think she called elf's better kind of in not so many
- 6:33words because she saw that the conversation online was that
- 6:36Patrick Todd's eye shadows were too expensive.
- 6:40I believe that she knew that making that video and sharing
- 6:43that the elf dupe was a good alternative.
- 6:46Like that's going to get her a lot of views.
- 6:49Even though she gave a positive review, like we said to the
- 6:51Patrick Todd eye shadows to begin with, I think she knew
- 6:55that that would get her a ton of views.
- 6:57And I just, I think in general, like she is driven by views and
- 6:59virality, which is why so many of her opinions and reviews and
- 7:04stuff feel conflicting because she's not really trying to kind
- 7:08of keep her integrity. Like she really is just making
- 7:13content that will go viral. Like that is her priority for
- 7:17right now. OK, the next story that I have
- 7:20is that Jeffrey Star is going on the cancelled podcast.
- 7:23So Jeffrey is about to make an official play.
- 7:27I would call this an official play for a comeback.
- 7:30Yesterday he recorded the cancel podcast with Tana Mojo and
- 7:33Brooks Schofield. Now, lots of people are really
- 7:38upset about this given Jeffrey's history of racism and just like
- 7:42generally bullying. Like he basically had to leave,
- 7:46not like leave the Internet. He has not left the Internet,
- 7:49but he kind of lost so much relevance.
- 7:52He had to move out of LA because he got like, quote UN quote
- 7:56cancelled so hard, partly for his really racist past behavior
- 8:01among like the 2020 kind of a reckoning that we had with
- 8:04white, like Internet stars, but also partly because he burned so
- 8:09many bridges in the beauty community.
- 8:11And his reputation was absolutely shot.
- 8:14And, you know, he basically spent years seemingly bullying
- 8:17them. So I think it's an interesting
- 8:20move that Tana and Brooke would have him on the cancelled
- 8:23podcast, given Brooke is fresh off of her own racism scandal.
- 8:28And I saw people on Reddit debating on like why they would
- 8:31have Jeffrey on to begin with, especially given everything that
- 8:34went on with Brooke. And, you know, they're trying to
- 8:37kind of rehab their image now. And I saw somebody's put it
- 8:41quite simply, and I agree with this, just for views, you know,
- 8:45their podcast. I'm not sure what the kind of
- 8:47numbers they're pulling in now are, but I imagine they are not
- 8:51pulling in the same amount of views and numbers as they did
- 8:55pre Brooke scandal. And I think in general, like
- 8:59their podcast, it was so buzzy. It was always in the news.
- 9:02People were obsessed with it. And I think after everything
- 9:05happened, you know, they kind of pulled back a bit.
- 9:07I know people were saying like it doesn't feel like Brooke is
- 9:09in this anymore. And I think they just kind of
- 9:12stopped having that same like synergy and energy.
- 9:15And as a result, I do think a lot of viewers have kind of
- 9:19maybe not like completely stopped listening or watching,
- 9:22but I think they've kind of dipped in relevance.
- 9:25And, you know, having Jeffrey Starr make his kind of play for
- 9:30a comeback. I know he's done podcasts and
- 9:33stuff over the last couple of years, but nothing as mainstream
- 9:37as going on Tana's podcast. Going on Tana's podcast is like,
- 9:40a clear, in my opinion, a clear indication that he is making a
- 9:43play for, like, a mainstream return.
- 9:46Yeah, that is going to get a lot of views.
- 9:49Like everyone is going to listen to that.
- 9:50Now, there are also concerns with this about what this means
- 9:53for Tricia Paytas's affiliation with Jeffrey.
- 9:56Tricia and Jeffrey were longtime friends, and they had a falling
- 9:58out around the same time that Tricia cut Shane Dawson off.
- 10:02And I can go into a whole like, actually maybe let me know if
- 10:06you guys want that, like a whole timeline of everything that
- 10:08happened between like Trisha, Jeffrey and Shane.
- 10:10I think that could be interesting.
- 10:12But I won't go into it like all of the details, but just know
- 10:15they used to be friends and they are no longer friends.
- 10:19And, you know, Tana responded to a comment on TikTok.
- 10:23So somebody was like, wait, basically, how does this affect
- 10:25Trisha? Because, you know, obviously
- 10:26Tana and Trisha are really close.
- 10:28And then Tana commented saying just wait.
- 10:33And so people are like, oh, this is not going to be good.
- 10:38If Tricia has let Jeffrey back into her life and they're going
- 10:42to publicly like be reunited, that is going to do a lot of
- 10:46harm to Tricia's renaissance. Like it will.
- 10:49She's really had this rehab of her image and being publicly
- 10:53friends or at least like affiliated in some way with
- 10:56Jeffrey Star. It's not going to be good.
- 11:00All right. And the last story that I have
- 11:02for you guys is that Shawn Mendes has opened up about his
- 11:07sexuality. So last night at a concert in
- 11:10Colorado, Shawn Mendes addressed the ongoing questions about his
- 11:14sexuality. Basically, even though he has
- 11:16dated tons of high profile women over the years, there have been
- 11:19so many rumors that basically he's gay or likes men.
- 11:24Bisexual people are not convinced that he is completely
- 11:27straight, so he addressed this publicly on the show.
- 11:32So he said, quote, since I was really young, there's been this
- 11:35thing about my sexuality, and people have been talking about
- 11:37it for so long. I think it's kind of silly
- 11:39because I think sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing
- 11:43and it's so hard to just put into boxes.
- 11:45It always felt like such an intrusion on something very
- 11:48personal to me, something that I was figuring out myself,
- 11:51something that I had yet to discover and still have yet to
- 11:54discover. The real truth about my life and
- 11:57my sexuality is that, man, I'm just figuring it out like
- 11:59everyone. I don't really know sometimes
- 12:01and I know other times. And it feels really scary
- 12:04because we live in a society that has a lot to say about
- 12:07that, that is so like earnest and honest and open.
- 12:11And I don't know if those words all mean the same thing.
- 12:14I feel like they do, but like vulnerable.
- 12:16And I think it's like the perfect explanation and the
- 12:21perfect way, hopefully, to like, shut people down.
- 12:24And I don't think he's necessarily trying to shut
- 12:26people down. I actually think he's trying to
- 12:27open up the conversation because I haven't actually seen this
- 12:32myself. But I saw that he's like,
- 12:33gearing up for a new album release.
- 12:35And apparently a lot of the songs seem like they will
- 12:38explore this particular topic. I also just feel like when it
- 12:41comes to us questioning celebrities and their sexual
- 12:45orientations, did we not learn anything from Billie Eilish?
- 12:50I feel like that was the most recent example, big high profile
- 12:53example of that. She was like getting so much
- 12:56criticism a couple of years ago for that one music video.
- 12:59She was being called out for like queer baiting and getting a
- 13:02lot of backlash for that just because she had publicly only
- 13:05dated men and people. I don't know, I guess just
- 13:09thought there's no possible way that someone could be bisexual.
- 13:13So she was getting so much backlash for that.
- 13:17And then literally this year she came out and it's like, did we
- 13:20not learn? Did we not learn?
- 13:22You can date women, but you can also be attracted to men and
- 13:26want to date men or hook up with men or whatever.
- 13:28Like people are fluid. And I think it's ridiculous that
- 13:31we keep trying to put these celebrities in boxes.
- 13:35And I don't I just I don't believe that Shawn Mendes would
- 13:38have been dating Camila Cabello for like 100 years and then got
- 13:42back together with her and all this stuff.
- 13:43If you know, he wasn't like into her.
- 13:47I don't know. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 13:50mini scroll today. Thank you so much for listening.
