- 0:02When we identify with the ego personality, we view the world
- 0:06as being separate and apart from ourselves, and we look at other
- 0:10beings as either competition for resources or threats to our
- 0:15existence. In most cases, we acquire
- 0:19substance through effort and we try to hold on to it and add to
- 0:23it to ensure our own survival and enjoyment of our lives.
- 0:29From this standpoint, we therefore treat anything we give
- 0:32away as a loss of substance and thereby an implicit threat to
- 0:38our long term ability to survive and thrive.
- 0:42When we see our existence from another viewpoint, however, we
- 0:46can see that what we consider to be a normal viewpoint from our
- 0:50ego consciousness is actually an illusion.
- 0:54In fact, we are parts or elements within a larger unified
- 0:59field of existence, and we coexist with all other beings
- 1:04and do not actually survive independently.
- 1:08We are not islands, but part of a vast continent.
- 1:14The simple example illustrates this.
- 1:17When we breathe, we obtain the oxygen we need to sustain
- 1:21ourselves. This oxygen is generated by
- 1:24plant life on the planet. The plant life gives voluntarily
- 1:29its oxygen excretion to us. In return, we give back carbon
- 1:34dioxide, which happens to be what the plant life needs to
- 1:38survive. Thus we are symbiotic, not
- 1:43separated. In this instance, there is a
- 1:46mutual give and take that is occurring.
- 1:49But when we look deeper, we can see that in fact, everything we
- 1:53do in the world, everything we give, everything we receive, is
- 1:59part of this virtuous cycle of mutual support, even if we do
- 2:03not recognize it immediately. In the process of a specific
- 2:08exchange of energy or substance, as we widen our consciousness,
- 2:14we begin to recognize this natural process, like breathing,
- 2:19that moves energy, substance, and support around freely.
- 2:24At that point we find that giving what needs to be given at
- 2:28a certain point in time is not a loss, but an affirmation of the
- 2:33principle of oneness. And instead of suffering a
- 2:37diminution, we help bring into view a greater harmony and
- 2:41support structure that is based in that greater harmony.
- 2:47A disciple asks, Why do human beings always want to have
- 2:51something in exchange for what they give?
- 2:54The mother notes quote. Because they are shut up in
- 2:58themselves. They sense their limitation and
- 3:02think that in order to grow, increase, and even survive, they
- 3:07need to take things from outside, for they live in the
- 3:10consciousness of their personal limitation.
- 3:14So for them what they give makes a hole, and this hole must be
- 3:20filled up by receiving something.
- 3:23Naturally, this is a mistake. And the truth is that if instead
- 3:27of being shut up in the narrow limits of their little person,
- 3:31they could so widen their consciousness as to be able not
- 3:34only to identify themselves with others in their narrow limits,
- 3:39but to come out of these limits, pass beyond, spread out
- 3:43everywhere, unite with the one consciousness, and become all
- 3:48things, then at that moment the narrow limits will vanish.
- 3:53But not before. And as long as one senses the
- 3:57narrow limits, one wants to take, for one fears to lose 1
- 4:03spends and wants to replenish. It is due to that, my child.
- 4:08For if one were spread out in all things, if all the
- 4:12vibrations which come and go express the need to merge into
- 4:16everything, to widen oneself, grow not by remaining within
- 4:21one's limits, but coming out of them, and finally to be
- 4:26identified with everything, one would no longer have anything to
- 4:31lose. For one would have everything.
- 4:34Only one doesn't know this, and so as one doesn't know, one
- 4:39can't do it. One tries to take, accumulate,
- 4:44accumulate, accumulate, but that is impossible.
- 4:48One can't accumulate. One must identify oneself.
- 4:53And then the little bit one gives, one wants to get back,
- 4:58one gives a good thought, one expects some recognition, one
- 5:03gives a little affection. 1 expects it from others.
- 5:06For one doesn't have the ability to become the good thought in
- 5:10everything. 1 doesn't have the ability to be the affection, the
- 5:15tender love in all things. One feels just like that, all
- 5:20cut up and limited and fears to lose everything, fears to lose
- 5:25what one has because one would be impoverished.
- 5:29On the other hand, if one were able to identify oneself, one
- 5:34would no longer need to pull. The more 1 spreads out, the more
- 5:40one has. The more one gets identified,
- 5:44the more one becomes. And then instead of taking, one
- 5:50gives. And the more one gives, the more
- 5:54one grows. But for this, one must be able
- 5:59to come out of the limits of one's little ego.
- 6:02One must be identified with the force, identified with the
- 6:06vibration, instead of being identified with one's ego.
- 6:12It is very difficult, but one can succeed.
