- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:12Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast. I'm
- 0:18Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan. In this is episode number three
- 0:21Speaker 1: fifty seven, and today I'm joined by Justin Hollandsworth of
- 0:24Speaker 1: White Tail Addictions TV to discuss high risk, high reward
- 0:28Speaker 1: tactics that lead to d I Y deer hunting success
- 0:31Speaker 1: and much more. All Right, welcome to the Wired Hunt podcast,
- 0:40Speaker 1: brought to you by Onyx. My guest today is Justin Hollandsworth.
- 0:45Speaker 1: He is a serious dear nut from Central Ohio, a
- 0:48Speaker 1: member of the White Tail Addictions TV team, and I
- 0:51Speaker 1: think this is fair to say, a disciple of the
- 0:53Speaker 1: Andre de Quisto school of deer hunting. And Justin like
- 0:58Speaker 1: Andre and a whole bunch of others who have kind
- 0:59Speaker 1: of come out of this coaching tree. Maybe you could
- 1:02Speaker 1: call it, folks like Adam Hayes and Dan Infult and others.
- 1:06Speaker 1: Justin is a mobile deer hunter who makes aggressive moves
- 1:10Speaker 1: when needed to get in tight on big mature deer.
- 1:13Speaker 1: So today I wanted to dig into what makes Justin tick,
- 1:17Speaker 1: why he does what he does how exactly he is
- 1:20Speaker 1: having such consistent deer hunting success year after year, And
- 1:24Speaker 1: I think this stuff, while in his case is being
- 1:27Speaker 1: applied to trying to kill a big old buck, it
- 1:29Speaker 1: could also help you if you're trying to kill any buck,
- 1:31Speaker 1: or if you're trying to kill your first two year
- 1:33Speaker 1: old buck, or whatever it is your goal is, these
- 1:35Speaker 1: things can help you. And let me tell you this
- 1:38Speaker 1: is a good one. Justin's got a great perspective and
- 1:41Speaker 1: I think I think he just effectively is able to
- 1:44Speaker 1: share his thought process from past hunts in a very
- 1:46Speaker 1: helpful way. But probably the biggest takeaway, if if I
- 1:50Speaker 1: had to drill down to just one thing for me
- 1:51Speaker 1: in this episode, it was Justin's repeated suggestion. He kept
- 1:57Speaker 1: on reminding us that we need to sometimes go beyond
- 2:00Speaker 1: the normal routine. We sometimes have to push outside of
- 2:02Speaker 1: our comfort zone, whether that's by trying completely new tactics,
- 2:06Speaker 1: going to new places, or maybe just pushing in further
- 2:09Speaker 1: or pushing harder for a buck than we ever thought
- 2:12Speaker 1: we would. And that, my friends, I think is a
- 2:15Speaker 1: really good piece of advice. So I'd say we should
- 2:18Speaker 1: just get right into it. But before that, do just
- 2:21Speaker 1: have to go through some real quick little house cleaning here.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Longtime listeners out there, you've probably noticed that we've had
- 2:28Speaker 1: a few more ads running than we did three or
- 2:31Speaker 1: four or five years ago. And sometimes those ads aren't
- 2:34Speaker 1: even hunting related. And I know ads can be a drag.
- 2:37Speaker 1: Sometimes I feel that way too. Um, it is just
- 2:42Speaker 1: a thing that you gotta do. It helps us keep
- 2:45Speaker 1: this free show going. They help support other big projects
- 2:49Speaker 1: that we put out there for free, like the back
- 2:51Speaker 1: Ford video series and all that, and they keep me
- 2:54Speaker 1: here and able to be talking to. So I just
- 2:56Speaker 1: wanted to to recognize that, Hey, I know that's a
- 2:59Speaker 1: little different. I know that maybe you roll your eyes
- 3:02Speaker 1: on occasion when you hear those. I thank you for
- 3:05Speaker 1: your patients and thank you for your support. And then
- 3:08Speaker 1: I'm just gonna come right back at you though, speaking
- 3:10Speaker 1: of ads, and give you one more right now, shameless plug.
- 3:14Speaker 1: If you're looking for a last minute or belated Father's
- 3:17Speaker 1: Day gift idea, I gotta give you a quick suggestion.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Maybe your dad or another father in your life would
- 3:23Speaker 1: like my book That Wild Country, an epic journey to
- 3:26Speaker 1: the past, present, and future of America's public lands. Uh
- 3:31Speaker 1: As you know, probably from here in the podcast. This
- 3:33Speaker 1: book covers the history of how we got all these big,
- 3:36Speaker 1: wild public places and a whole series of wild adventures
- 3:40Speaker 1: exploring them. You can get it wherever books are available, Amazon,
- 3:43Speaker 1: Barnes and Noble whatever. I appreciate it. I think your
- 3:47Speaker 1: dad would like it. And now with all that out
- 3:50Speaker 1: of the way, I promise it is time to get
- 3:55Speaker 1: to the show. All right with me? Now on the
- 4:00Speaker 1: line is Justin Hollandsworth. Justin Welcome to the show. Thank you,
- 4:05Speaker 1: thank you for having me. Yeah, I'm glad that we
- 4:07Speaker 1: can have this chat. It's uh, I don't know how
- 4:11Speaker 1: it is for you, But I'm thinking about dear all
- 4:14Speaker 1: year long, probably every day there's something I'm thinking about.
- 4:17Speaker 1: But I have a little bit of an ebb and
- 4:19Speaker 1: flow where my crazy meter can sometimes go from like
- 4:23Speaker 1: eighty two fifty, and that crazy meter goes exponentially higher
- 4:29Speaker 1: as we get into the summer. So once June hits
- 4:32Speaker 1: and you start seeing a velvet bucker two, I get
- 4:34Speaker 1: a little weird. And that's where I'm at right now,
- 4:36Speaker 1: And so talking to somebody but like you, is the
- 4:39Speaker 1: perfect way to scratch that hitch. Um. So that's my
- 4:43Speaker 1: long winded way of saying, I'm excited about this. No,
- 4:46Speaker 1: I'm glad to be on. I've been listening to your
- 4:48Speaker 1: podcast for a while now. I love them, glad to
- 4:50Speaker 1: hear that I appreciate it. Um. Well, if you've listened
- 4:53Speaker 1: to the past episodes, then you know I usually like
- 4:55Speaker 1: to kick these off with just a little bit of
- 4:57Speaker 1: an intro from you. Uh. If people don't know who
- 5:00Speaker 1: you are what you do, can you just give us
- 5:01Speaker 1: the quick one on one on on your background and
- 5:04Speaker 1: what TRUP do. Yeah. So, UM, I growing up in Ohio,
- 5:11Speaker 1: live in central Ohio and have for the last twenty years.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And um I uh I worked as a construction project manager.
- 5:23Speaker 1: But UM, I've been involved with UM UM Lone Wolf
- 5:30Speaker 1: and Lone Wolf Custom Gear for almost twenty years now. UM.
- 5:37Speaker 1: Matter of fact, I've not shot a Pope and Young
- 5:40Speaker 1: white Tail out of anything UM other than a Dequisto
- 5:44Speaker 1: design stand and UM and currently UM working with them
- 5:51Speaker 1: on the Lone Wolf custom gear side of things. But
- 5:54Speaker 1: I'm also the co producer along with Byron Horton who's
- 5:58Speaker 1: the main producer and he's usco another co producer for
- 6:02Speaker 1: the White Tail Addiction Show. So that's UH. That's what
- 6:06Speaker 1: I'm doing these days. But um, um, more importantly, I'm
- 6:10Speaker 1: just another average guy out there that is absolutely addicted
- 6:15Speaker 1: to white tales and love everything about him. That's the
- 6:17Speaker 1: kind of person I like to talk to. Um, it's funny.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I uh, I know a lot of really good hunters
- 6:23Speaker 1: down in Ohio, and I it was very strange. I
- 6:27Speaker 1: was watching I can't remember if I was watching one
- 6:29Speaker 1: of your videos or if I was listening to a
- 6:31Speaker 1: conversation you were having someone on a podcast or something,
- 6:34Speaker 1: but it struck with me that there's another friend of
- 6:38Speaker 1: mine from down in Ohio, he's more towards Cincinnati, that
- 6:42Speaker 1: literally sounds exactly like you. The two of you have
- 6:45Speaker 1: the exact same voice, the exact same pauses in your voice. Um,
- 6:49Speaker 1: you could flip you and my buddy Mike out and
- 6:51Speaker 1: it's like I'm talking the same guy and you're both
- 6:53Speaker 1: absolute killers. So it's it's a weird Ohio voice thing
- 6:57Speaker 1: that's going on right now. But it's I had to
- 7:00Speaker 1: mention it because it just kind of blew my mind
- 7:02Speaker 1: when I realized it. Um, you're not happy to be
- 7:05Speaker 1: related to a great deer hunter done in Cincinnati, do you? No? No?
- 7:09Speaker 1: But you know, somebody else has said the same thing
- 7:12Speaker 1: to me one other times. So I have to look
- 7:15Speaker 1: this guy up because I don't know this guy, so
- 7:17Speaker 1: I should choose dame afterwards. I don't know. Maybe it's
- 7:20Speaker 1: an Ohio accident or something that I've never noticed before
- 7:23Speaker 1: that all of a sudden is starting to stand out
- 7:24Speaker 1: to me. But uh, but yeah, it's there's no short
- 7:28Speaker 1: good deer hunters down that state. You guys, are you
- 7:31Speaker 1: guys are fortunate to not only be good hunters but
- 7:34Speaker 1: also have some great hunting. If you you've hunted in
- 7:36Speaker 1: a lot of other states, I know, Iowa, you've been
- 7:39Speaker 1: all over the place, But how does your home state rank?
- 7:43Speaker 1: Is that? Is that your favorite? Are you still like
- 7:45Speaker 1: going on into places like Iowa? Is that still special?
- 7:49Speaker 1: I love Ohio, um, you know, and I had a
- 7:53Speaker 1: lot of time to prepare here, and and we have
- 7:56Speaker 1: some some great deer, there's no doubt. Um, I don't
- 8:02Speaker 1: know something about Iowa's just like the cream of the crop. Though. UM,
- 8:07Speaker 1: it's hands down my favorite. But you know, Illinois is great.
- 8:12Speaker 1: I've Kansas is great. Um, there's a lot of really
- 8:17Speaker 1: good states. But if I had to, I guess I
- 8:21Speaker 1: mean I was number one, and I would say probably
- 8:28Speaker 1: I would probably rank Ohio four. But maybe that's just
- 8:31Speaker 1: because I live here. But I have a lot of
- 8:33Speaker 1: time to prepare, you know, to prepare here. And um,
- 8:40Speaker 1: I think that's why I consistently have success, is just
- 8:43Speaker 1: because of my preparation and everything that I do where
- 8:48Speaker 1: I tend to a lot of times I leave Ohio
- 8:53Speaker 1: um and hunt the Rut and other states because, UM,
- 8:58Speaker 1: a lot of the deer that I'm after just who knows,
- 9:02Speaker 1: who knows where they are. It's harder to keep tracking
- 9:05Speaker 1: them from a long distance, that's for sure. UM. So
- 9:10Speaker 1: I've got a weird way I want to kick this off. UM,
- 9:15Speaker 1: And you can answer this however. You however, it kind
- 9:17Speaker 1: of rings true to you. But why would you say
- 9:22Speaker 1: you're a deer hunter? Is it you? I guess you
- 9:25Speaker 1: can answer that. As far as how what led you
- 9:27Speaker 1: to being hunter or why you love it so much?
- 9:30Speaker 1: I don't know. I guess I shouldn't answer the question
- 9:32Speaker 1: for it. I should let you answer why are you
- 9:34Speaker 1: a deer hunter? Justin Well, I think for me, you know,
- 9:38Speaker 1: it started when I was a kid and my my grandfather,
- 9:42Speaker 1: who would who was always talking about deer hunting, and
- 9:47Speaker 1: and I remember a lot of those conversations, and he
- 9:50Speaker 1: and he talked a lot about a guy by the
- 9:52Speaker 1: name of Roger Rothar and Roger and I grew up
- 9:58Speaker 1: in north central Ohio, so Roger was not that far.
- 10:03Speaker 1: And I remember my grandfather always talking about the sky
- 10:06Speaker 1: and everything, and and I remember just I think, just
- 10:14Speaker 1: being around my my grandfather so much, and he just
- 10:17Speaker 1: built up the white tails, you know, so much in
- 10:19Speaker 1: my head. So when I first the first time that
- 10:23Speaker 1: I ever went hunted, um, I went out and my
- 10:26Speaker 1: grandfather had shot a dough like right in front of me,
- 10:30Speaker 1: and um man, I'm telling you, I was just hooked
- 10:33Speaker 1: from that day for it is all I could think about. Um.
- 10:37Speaker 1: I think I probably told most of the kids at
- 10:39Speaker 1: my school that I actually shot that deer, which I
- 10:42Speaker 1: did not. And and it was just after that, I mean,
- 10:49Speaker 1: I just I was just fascinated with the white tails.
- 10:52Speaker 1: I mean I did like science fair projects on white
- 10:55Speaker 1: tailed deer movement, and you know, like we'd be sitting
- 11:00Speaker 1: a social studies class and I'd have North American white
- 11:04Speaker 1: tail and that in that book. Instead of actually paying
- 11:08Speaker 1: attention and doing the things I probably should have been doing. Um,
- 11:13Speaker 1: but I just got I just got bit with the bug.
- 11:16Speaker 1: And I don't know the white tail. The white tail
- 11:19Speaker 1: is just a you cannot you cannot tell me that
- 11:23Speaker 1: there's more magnificent of an animal than a white tail.
- 11:27Speaker 1: I just have a hard time believe in that. Yeah,
- 11:30Speaker 1: I'm right there with you. There's something about him. It's uh,
- 11:33Speaker 1: it's hard to shake it once you get the bug.
- 11:35Speaker 1: It's funny you said the magazines and social study class.
- 11:38Speaker 1: That is literally I may have read my deer hunt
- 11:41Speaker 1: magazines and all my classes, but for whatever reason, I
- 11:44Speaker 1: remember specifically getting in trouble in a social studies class.
- 11:47Speaker 1: I was sitting in the back row of my high school.
- 11:49Speaker 1: It would have been my junior year, I think, and
- 11:52Speaker 1: my buddy, uh Josh Hilly or two people know is
- 11:55Speaker 1: further was sitting next to me, and I was trying
- 11:57Speaker 1: to get him into deer hunting at that point, and
- 11:58Speaker 1: I'm looking showing him deer and deer hunting in North
- 12:01Speaker 1: American white tail magazines in the back of class, and
- 12:03Speaker 1: we got called out and yelled at. And that one
- 12:05Speaker 1: sticks with me. So that's hut that yeah, yeah, I
- 12:11Speaker 1: think so. Um so it sounds like that obsession in
- 12:17Speaker 1: high school is definitely still going for you. Now I
- 12:19Speaker 1: heard you say that you try to do at least
- 12:23Speaker 1: one thing whitetail related every day. Um, what would you say?
- 12:28Speaker 1: Is that accurate still? And if so, what did you
- 12:31Speaker 1: do today or what do you plan on doing the
- 12:33Speaker 1: next day or two? Well, Um, yesterday I was sitting
- 12:37Speaker 1: trail cameras UM for a big portion of the day,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and um, you know, today I was I was actually
- 12:46Speaker 1: coming back from a UM job site, and UM, I
- 12:53Speaker 1: noticed a piece of ground, UM that just looked really
- 12:58Speaker 1: really good, really you know, had the good cover you know,
- 13:02Speaker 1: you know what a big white tail would. And I
- 13:04Speaker 1: literally pulled over at the next gas station and started,
- 13:08Speaker 1: you know, buzzing through onyx UM trying to figure out
- 13:11Speaker 1: who owned that piece, and and then did the what
- 13:16Speaker 1: we all like to do was Okay, there's that guy,
- 13:19Speaker 1: So now I'm going to look him up on Facebook
- 13:21Speaker 1: and I'm going to start doing you know and just
- 13:24Speaker 1: trying to have any mutual friends and like trying to
- 13:28Speaker 1: That's that was what I was doing today. Has that
- 13:32Speaker 1: ever worked for you? Have you ever been able to
- 13:34Speaker 1: have a random drive by and connect the dots and
- 13:37Speaker 1: get permission or something for sure, any any any trick
- 13:42Speaker 1: to it that you think help that workout or is
- 13:44Speaker 1: just getting lucky. A mutual friend is tremendous. I mean
- 13:50Speaker 1: that can be um in itself. If you have that,
- 13:55Speaker 1: you know, that foot in the door, that can go
- 13:59Speaker 1: a long way. And actually last year I ended up
- 14:02Speaker 1: I got a piece that was it was just that, UM,
- 14:06Speaker 1: we had a mutual friend and and by the time
- 14:10Speaker 1: I tracked them all down and I had called her
- 14:13Speaker 1: and I said, hey, I know this is completely random,
- 14:16Speaker 1: but um, and I mentioned the guy's name. She's like, oh, yeah,
- 14:19Speaker 1: how do you know him. I'm like, well, I don't.
- 14:21Speaker 1: But and then it led to that and then probably
- 14:26Speaker 1: over the course of about three weeks or so, UM,
- 14:32Speaker 1: I finally ended up with getting a permission slot. That's amazing.
- 14:36Speaker 1: I feel like one of the biggest things there is
- 14:40Speaker 1: just like there's there's there's some number of people that
- 14:45Speaker 1: I want to get more permission, and then there's a
- 14:47Speaker 1: smaller number of people that are thinking about it a lot.
- 14:51Speaker 1: And I think this is a really important subgroup of
- 14:53Speaker 1: people and that they're thinking about constantly getting that access
- 14:57Speaker 1: and then you know, take it that newt step further
- 15:00Speaker 1: like you did, Like you saw something that looks good,
- 15:02Speaker 1: you looked it up. You try to, you know, drill
- 15:04Speaker 1: down to other contacts and making it work. That seems
- 15:07Speaker 1: to be something that is consistent among a lot of
- 15:11Speaker 1: really good deer hunters is obsession with access, keeping on
- 15:14Speaker 1: getting new permission, falling up on leads. Um, I've been
- 15:19Speaker 1: I've had periods where I'm good at it, periods where
- 15:21Speaker 1: I'm not as good at it. But it seems like
- 15:24Speaker 1: those guys and girls that are constantly thinking and adding
- 15:27Speaker 1: to their to their list of spots, that that's never
- 15:31Speaker 1: a bad thing, don't you think, I mean, you can
- 15:32Speaker 1: never have too many good spots? Yeah, because I mean, um,
- 15:38Speaker 1: things just constantly change, and and you never want to
- 15:41Speaker 1: get you never want to be stuck into limited you know,
- 15:47Speaker 1: yourself to just a couple of couple of pieces of property,
- 15:50Speaker 1: because maybe the caliber deer that you're looking for is
- 15:54Speaker 1: not on those pieces that maybe you've been hunting for years,
- 15:57Speaker 1: and um, I just want to make sure that you know,
- 16:00Speaker 1: going into each and every season, I have the the
- 16:04Speaker 1: caliber of buck that um I'm I'm looking for it.
- 16:09Speaker 1: And it gets and that gets harder as I get
- 16:12Speaker 1: older and more further into this, UM. Because let's face it,
- 16:19Speaker 1: I'm I don't care if you're in Ohio or Iowa
- 16:22Speaker 1: or wherever you're at. You know, one fifty plus deer
- 16:27Speaker 1: is just they're hard. They're hard to find, and and
- 16:33Speaker 1: UM that that but that's the challenge, and that's you know,
- 16:37Speaker 1: that's what I enjoy. I do like that part of it.
- 16:41Speaker 1: So you're getting pick here and pickier. It sounds like,
- 16:44Speaker 1: you know, every years many people do, they get higher
- 16:48Speaker 1: and higher expectations or goals. And now you're trying to
- 16:50Speaker 1: find buck of a certain caliber. Like that when you're
- 16:53Speaker 1: trying to find new places, or when you're driving down
- 16:56Speaker 1: the road and you see something and then you look
- 16:57Speaker 1: at the map, what kind of criteria is it that
- 17:01Speaker 1: you are looking for that makes you think, oh, that
- 17:04Speaker 1: could be the kind of spot that has the type
- 17:06Speaker 1: of buck I'm after. Now, like, how do you find
- 17:08Speaker 1: that exceptional property? UM? I think the biggest thing is cover. UM.
- 17:16Speaker 1: You know, the nastier it looks, the more I'm attracted
- 17:20Speaker 1: to it. UM. And I've had some experiences over the years,
- 17:24Speaker 1: and I think a lot of guys have gone through this.
- 17:26Speaker 1: We go through you know, I have you know, some
- 17:29Speaker 1: properties that you know I can I can do a
- 17:31Speaker 1: lot of things too. I can put food plots in
- 17:34Speaker 1: and I can do some um some hinge cutting those
- 17:38Speaker 1: types of things. Um. I've gotten access to pieces over
- 17:43Speaker 1: the years where I've went in and thought, man, this
- 17:47Speaker 1: is a killer piece, and maybe I had it for
- 17:49Speaker 1: a couple of years. I'm like, Okay, I'm gonna put
- 17:51Speaker 1: all these food plots in it and everything else. And
- 17:53Speaker 1: I actually made the some of these, some of these farms,
- 17:57Speaker 1: I'm hurdle, to be honest with you, instead of I
- 18:02Speaker 1: took away too much cover and the and some of
- 18:06Speaker 1: the best pieces I think I've ever hunted are just
- 18:09Speaker 1: nasty pieces. And I think that's where the older mature
- 18:13Speaker 1: deer tend to light because I've gotten I've got access
- 18:18Speaker 1: to a couple of pretty good sized farms that have
- 18:22Speaker 1: a lot of big open timber on them, and they're
- 18:24Speaker 1: to pieces, and they're just not nearly as good as
- 18:29Speaker 1: this ten acre piece that is just nasty. Yeah, yeah,
- 18:33Speaker 1: that seems to be. That seems to just just draw
- 18:36Speaker 1: them in. Now here's something my buddy Andy and I
- 18:38Speaker 1: were talking about this the other day. Do you think
- 18:41Speaker 1: that you find the big old nasty buck in that
- 18:44Speaker 1: thick stuff because that big old nasty buck sought that
- 18:48Speaker 1: out and wanted to find the thickest, nastiest stuff to
- 18:50Speaker 1: stay alive. Or was that a buck that just happened
- 18:54Speaker 1: to grow up there and because it was thick and
- 18:57Speaker 1: nasty he survived to become big and old. H I
- 19:01Speaker 1: think he could go both ways, Um, I think. But
- 19:07Speaker 1: I also think too that you know, you say, you
- 19:11Speaker 1: say you have this twenty piece ands thick and nasty
- 19:13Speaker 1: or whatever, and you go in there and you you
- 19:16Speaker 1: kill that target buck. Um because it is so good
- 19:21Speaker 1: and because the spot is so bullet proof. Um, when
- 19:26Speaker 1: it comes to a deer being able to escape you,
- 19:31Speaker 1: I think another deer just moves right in. Another mature
- 19:34Speaker 1: deer a lot of times will to move right into
- 19:38Speaker 1: one of those spots. But I don't know. I've seen
- 19:40Speaker 1: it both ways, um, because I've I've grown deer on
- 19:45Speaker 1: some places, and then I've also had places where, um,
- 19:52Speaker 1: I've killed a buck and another buck moved right in. Yeah,
- 19:59Speaker 1: it seems that that thick stuff like that is is
- 20:04Speaker 1: in my experience, has always been a really good starting point.
- 20:10Speaker 1: Like if you find that you know, you're in the general,
- 20:13Speaker 1: You're in the ballgame. But then something I've kind of
- 20:17Speaker 1: gone back and forth with throughout my deer hunting journey
- 20:21Speaker 1: has been figuring out what's the next step, Like, what's
- 20:24Speaker 1: like how do you work with that chunk of betting
- 20:27Speaker 1: area or that swamp or that thicket or whatever it is.
- 20:30Speaker 1: At times I always thought, leave it untouched, don't go
- 20:32Speaker 1: in there, don't spook the deer, don't blow them out,
- 20:35Speaker 1: hunt of the edges. And then other times I've started thinking,
- 20:37Speaker 1: maybe I need to get more aggressive, Maybe I should
- 20:39Speaker 1: be pushing in there, Maybe I should be you know,
- 20:41Speaker 1: I've kind of waffled and tried different things, and sometimes
- 20:43Speaker 1: they work, sometimes they don't. And I heard you telling
- 20:45Speaker 1: a story recently kind of similar to this, where you
- 20:49Speaker 1: had gotten permission I think on a small property and
- 20:52Speaker 1: a small thick area, and you, at this time, I
- 20:55Speaker 1: think it was earlier in your deer hunting um career
- 20:58Speaker 1: journey or whatever you you were afraid to go in
- 21:00Speaker 1: there because you've always kind of heard some of the
- 21:01Speaker 1: things I did, which which was don't blow them out,
- 21:04Speaker 1: don't spook those deer um. But then your your friend
- 21:08Speaker 1: Andre de Quisto, who a lot of us know from
- 21:11Speaker 1: from Lone Wolf and all the different things he's done.
- 21:14Speaker 1: He told you to go in there and and walk it,
- 21:16Speaker 1: blow that deer right out of his bed if he
- 21:18Speaker 1: had to. Um, can you tell me a little bit
- 21:21Speaker 1: about that experienced that story and and what you learned
- 21:24Speaker 1: from that? Was it was andre right? Was that the
- 21:26Speaker 1: right thing to do? Yeah? For sure? For sure it
- 21:29Speaker 1: was because in years past I would have never done that,
- 21:32Speaker 1: because I would have I would have just given that
- 21:35Speaker 1: deer that and would have started on the edges and
- 21:40Speaker 1: tried to catch that deer um and not knowing that
- 21:44Speaker 1: piece either. Um, that was the other tough part of it.
- 21:49Speaker 1: So remember I remember I got access to that piece,
- 21:53Speaker 1: and I knew there's two good there's actually two good
- 21:55Speaker 1: bucks on that piece. How you know that? I? So,
- 22:01Speaker 1: you know, a lot of guys like the scout. A
- 22:04Speaker 1: lot of guys like to scout in the in the
- 22:07Speaker 1: evenings in glass Fields. I don't like the scout in
- 22:10Speaker 1: the evenings because I'm kind of an early bird. Plus
- 22:13Speaker 1: I feel like I draw a lot of unwanted attention
- 22:16Speaker 1: by my you know, by a park truck with a
- 22:19Speaker 1: set of binoculars. Hanging out to the driver's side. Um. So,
- 22:24Speaker 1: I mean, I I tend to go early, um, then late.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I don't do I don't glass as much as I
- 22:33Speaker 1: used to. But um but I told him about it,
- 22:40Speaker 1: and he said, you just you need to just you
- 22:43Speaker 1: need to just go in there, don't care, just learn
- 22:45Speaker 1: a piece. And when you jump that deer up, then
- 22:48Speaker 1: you you know, we're in the general vicinity where he
- 22:52Speaker 1: is it likes to be at this moment in time.
- 22:56Speaker 1: And it was like August, I think, And I remember
- 23:00Speaker 1: going in there and bumping that deer out of his
- 23:03Speaker 1: bed and and him escaping, and and and I just
- 23:10Speaker 1: I still had this whole thought in my head. I'm like,
- 23:12Speaker 1: oh my gosh, what did I Yeah, And I remember
- 23:17Speaker 1: just like still cringing over that was like I don't
- 23:20Speaker 1: know about that. But I had my way with that
- 23:22Speaker 1: property at that point, and I was able just to
- 23:25Speaker 1: do whatever I wanted and scout every bit of it,
- 23:28Speaker 1: even though it was August and it was ninety degrees
- 23:32Speaker 1: out and you know, you're, you know, dealing with the
- 23:36Speaker 1: ticks and the mosquitoes and everything else. But I knew
- 23:40Speaker 1: how everything laid in there, and I could see a
- 23:42Speaker 1: lot of the old sign from from the year before,
- 23:46Speaker 1: and and that just that just played out, you know perfect.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I never caught up with that deer until um, I
- 23:56Speaker 1: actually killed that deer the first week of gun season
- 24:00Speaker 1: with my bow. Um we can, we can bow hunt
- 24:04Speaker 1: during our gun season and I don't. I don't gun hunt,
- 24:08Speaker 1: so um it took me a minute to catch back
- 24:13Speaker 1: up to him. But there was a lot of things
- 24:16Speaker 1: you know, I hadn't I had encounters with that deer
- 24:19Speaker 1: prior to that that I probably wouldn't ever had if
- 24:22Speaker 1: I had ever done that. And when that deer moved,
- 24:27Speaker 1: he that deer left that farm for a little bit
- 24:29Speaker 1: in November, and when he showed back up, I I
- 24:33Speaker 1: set in my truck and UM watched that deer for
- 24:38Speaker 1: two evenings in a row, and I just didn't have
- 24:40Speaker 1: the wind where I where I wanted to be. And
- 24:44Speaker 1: soon as the wind switched on that third day, I
- 24:46Speaker 1: went in there and killed him. Did he do so
- 24:50Speaker 1: he did the same kind of thing, or did he
- 24:52Speaker 1: did he use the wind differently? Because this is something
- 24:54Speaker 1: I'm always trying to do too, is is see historical
- 24:57Speaker 1: movements and then when the wind gets right for you,
- 25:00Speaker 1: go in there. But then the deer doesn't show up.
- 25:02Speaker 1: And then I wondered to myself, well, did they not
- 25:04Speaker 1: show up because I waited for the wind that worked
- 25:05Speaker 1: for me? Um? What what was the scenario for you?
- 25:09Speaker 1: It was kind of one of those you know, one
- 25:11Speaker 1: of those winds where you're you're splitting the hairs. And
- 25:13Speaker 1: I've always you know, Roger Roth I wrote about that
- 25:16Speaker 1: in his books and in his book White Tail Magic
- 25:19Speaker 1: years ago, and um, you know, it was hunting that
- 25:22Speaker 1: edge wind and um, and you know, I call it
- 25:27Speaker 1: flirting with disaster. That's what I call it, because you're
- 25:30Speaker 1: on the edge of making it happen or not. And
- 25:34Speaker 1: that was the wind that I had had. There was
- 25:38Speaker 1: a little more of On the first two nights that
- 25:41Speaker 1: I came out, it was a little more of a
- 25:44Speaker 1: southeast to it, and the night that I that I've
- 25:49Speaker 1: killed him, it was more a little more of the
- 25:51Speaker 1: south southwest. So he still had it. I think he
- 25:56Speaker 1: had that false sense of security and and the confidence
- 26:01Speaker 1: of moving through that area. But I was just, you know,
- 26:06Speaker 1: I was just on that edge and just flirting with
- 26:09Speaker 1: disaster basically, And then it worked. That That taught me
- 26:12Speaker 1: a lot, right then, Yeah, on the wind perspective. You're saying, Yeah,
- 26:17Speaker 1: that that really like opened my eyes, Um, because I
- 26:22Speaker 1: had heard that before and then I when I read
- 26:25Speaker 1: that in Rogers book, Um, it made sense, you know.
- 26:31Speaker 1: And I'm like, you know, yeah, I get that. I
- 26:34Speaker 1: was always just like bumping that deer out of that
- 26:37Speaker 1: bed that time. I was always nervous about I was
- 26:42Speaker 1: always too nervous about getting busted. And I think that's
- 26:45Speaker 1: the biggest problem. You know, Sometimes you have to get uncomfortable.
- 26:50Speaker 1: And I guess what I mean is you have to
- 26:54Speaker 1: you have to use some of those strategies and get
- 26:56Speaker 1: out of your comfort little box that we all like
- 26:59Speaker 1: to get and and stay in. And and sometimes that
- 27:02Speaker 1: that just hurts you. Um, as far as trying to
- 27:05Speaker 1: kill big deer, you have to try some new things. Yeah.
- 27:08Speaker 1: But man, like you said, you are flirting with a disaster,
- 27:12Speaker 1: and and how many times do you do it where
- 27:15Speaker 1: it is disaster and it's not. You know, That's the
- 27:17Speaker 1: tough thing is that it is it's so hard to
- 27:20Speaker 1: pull off. I constantly, I constantly find myself trying to
- 27:23Speaker 1: do that same thing. But it's right, It's it's easier
- 27:26Speaker 1: said than done in most cases. Um, because there's there's
- 27:31Speaker 1: so many little things that can go wrong, and you
- 27:33Speaker 1: have to have everything go right to get that shot.
- 27:36Speaker 1: I mean, you could pick the right wind. You could
- 27:39Speaker 1: pick it so he feels comfortable coming out. You could
- 27:41Speaker 1: pick it so that you don't think he's gonna pass
- 27:44Speaker 1: where your wind is blowing, and you could still be
- 27:47Speaker 1: in a position where he'll come through and think he's safe,
- 27:49Speaker 1: but he won't realize you're there within shooting range. But
- 27:52Speaker 1: then one dough could do the wrong thing and she
- 27:55Speaker 1: slips there and blows everything out. I mean, how do you, like,
- 28:00Speaker 1: what are some of the things you do to try
- 28:02Speaker 1: to minimize that risk. I don't know. I'm constants. It's
- 28:05Speaker 1: a constant struggle for me, Like are there any tricks
- 28:07Speaker 1: you've found? Are there any things that you're thinking about,
- 28:10Speaker 1: like to take it to the next step to actually
- 28:12Speaker 1: make that flirty with disaster work More times than not,
- 28:16Speaker 1: I think it's more of just one big thing is
- 28:19Speaker 1: structure and terrain. Um those things will you know, and
- 28:26Speaker 1: maybe you have some fallen trees, or maybe there's a
- 28:31Speaker 1: big you know, uh, drop off from a creek, or
- 28:36Speaker 1: or maybe it's a pond or what you know, those
- 28:38Speaker 1: things help a lot when when you can use some
- 28:41Speaker 1: stuff like that. Um, and and then other times it's um,
- 28:47Speaker 1: cross your fingers and hope this works, because sometimes it's
- 28:50Speaker 1: a one shot deal. And there's been times where I've
- 28:55Speaker 1: had deer come in where the gig is up but
- 28:59Speaker 1: my arrows already coming. Yeah, it's he's he's gonna bust
- 29:05Speaker 1: your right when you shoot him. Yeah. Yeah, I mean
- 29:09Speaker 1: just being right on that edge of of you know,
- 29:13Speaker 1: blowing it all up. I killed I killed a deer. Um.
- 29:18Speaker 1: It's been I don't know, probably seven eight years ago.
- 29:23Speaker 1: He's actually on one of our White Teledictions episodes and um,
- 29:27Speaker 1: he's a big white ten and he had some split
- 29:29Speaker 1: brows and a little like drop or something at the
- 29:32Speaker 1: at one of his basis that deer. I knew of
- 29:35Speaker 1: that deer for a couple of years and and the
- 29:39Speaker 1: night that I decided, okay, this is it. I'm going
- 29:43Speaker 1: in to kill this deer tonight. Um, I had Can
- 29:48Speaker 1: I put time out on you? Yeah, all right, I'm
- 29:52Speaker 1: a jerk for doing this, But you gotta tell me
- 29:55Speaker 1: before you keep going. You gotta tell me how you
- 29:57Speaker 1: knew it was the night to go kill him? Okay, well,
- 30:05Speaker 1: I was watching some cameras and and I just kind
- 30:10Speaker 1: of I stayed out. And that's the other thing. You
- 30:13Speaker 1: just you have to be patient, you know. You you
- 30:18Speaker 1: only have just a couple shots at at these bucks sometimes,
- 30:22Speaker 1: and and I just kind of set back and kind
- 30:24Speaker 1: of let my cameras do the work. And then there
- 30:27Speaker 1: was a lot of times too, like I would just
- 30:29Speaker 1: maybe glass from far see if the deer was coming
- 30:31Speaker 1: out to the field or whatever, but he was he
- 30:34Speaker 1: was never actually had a food plot in there, and
- 30:36Speaker 1: he was never he was never making into that food
- 30:39Speaker 1: plot until after dark. Well, I'd seen I'd stepped back
- 30:45Speaker 1: from observation stand and I could see some big rubs
- 30:48Speaker 1: that were coming out, and I had a general idea
- 30:51Speaker 1: just knowing the property about where the deer was. Well,
- 30:55Speaker 1: I went in there and just poked around one day
- 30:59Speaker 1: and there was a couple There was a hedge apple
- 31:03Speaker 1: tree in there, and there was a pear tree. And
- 31:05Speaker 1: that pear tree has never dropped any pairs since that day.
- 31:09Speaker 1: I don't know what the deal is on that that tree,
- 31:12Speaker 1: but it was loaded that year and and I just thought,
- 31:19Speaker 1: he's he's staging up in here, he's hanging out before
- 31:23Speaker 1: he makes it the rest of the way out. But
- 31:28Speaker 1: what I noticed from the camera, like when he had
- 31:31Speaker 1: a win that was not in his favor, he was
- 31:35Speaker 1: showing up to three hours after dark. When he had
- 31:38Speaker 1: a win in his favor, he was making making it
- 31:42Speaker 1: in there and shooting and shooting light. And this was
- 31:45Speaker 1: like October eight or so October nine, and I just
- 31:51Speaker 1: kind of hung out and just kind of waited for
- 31:53Speaker 1: this to happen, and the deer not showed up. He
- 31:56Speaker 1: had a couple of days in a row where he
- 31:58Speaker 1: showed up well after dark and the wind was switching.
- 32:01Speaker 1: I'm like, well, if the wind switches that direction, he
- 32:04Speaker 1: might show up in early. And I'm like, I just
- 32:07Speaker 1: have to take a chance because he'll have that wind
- 32:11Speaker 1: to his advantage as long as it doesn't lay down
- 32:15Speaker 1: too much in the evening to create that swirl, because
- 32:21Speaker 1: I swear once you get under five miles an hour,
- 32:24Speaker 1: it's like and you just don't know. I mean, you're
- 32:27Speaker 1: really risking a lot. I slid in there, hung my set,
- 32:34Speaker 1: and that that was the only deer I've seen that
- 32:39Speaker 1: whole entire evening, and he came out, and I probably
- 32:43Speaker 1: watched that deer for eighty yards or so, And I'm
- 32:46Speaker 1: not kidding you. He literally would walk five yards, stop, listen,
- 32:52Speaker 1: look around, and just repeat. And he did that for
- 32:55Speaker 1: eighty yards. Like he absolutely wore me out. How was
- 33:03Speaker 1: so you you mentioned that the wind had shifted to
- 33:06Speaker 1: be in his favor? Can you use that as an
- 33:08Speaker 1: example to talk about how you positioned your stand because
- 33:11Speaker 1: young hung a new set that day. It sounds like, so,
- 33:14Speaker 1: how did you how did you use the way you
- 33:16Speaker 1: thought he would use the wind and the way you
- 33:19Speaker 1: were to use the wind to make it work? Like
- 33:20Speaker 1: what was this paint that picture? I guess so I had, um,
- 33:25Speaker 1: so where the apple and where the apple and pear
- 33:29Speaker 1: tree the apple tree was, there wasn't very many apples
- 33:33Speaker 1: in their left on that there's a ton of parents left.
- 33:36Speaker 1: There was two big blowdowns, and I felt like he
- 33:42Speaker 1: wouldn't come behind those blowdowns, um, just because he would
- 33:47Speaker 1: end up, um, he would lose too much of of
- 33:53Speaker 1: control of being able to scent check something for danger.
- 33:57Speaker 1: So I got myself just on the one side of
- 34:00Speaker 1: those where it was going to kind of force him
- 34:03Speaker 1: to come up and around. But you know, but just
- 34:08Speaker 1: where it was almost like where those blowdowns where like
- 34:12Speaker 1: my son, my son was going to go right down
- 34:14Speaker 1: those blowdowns and he was just gonna come right through
- 34:17Speaker 1: the front. Now, obviously that's what I played in my
- 34:20Speaker 1: head and thought was gonna work. It did work that way,
- 34:23Speaker 1: but it doesn't always. Um, And and it kind of
- 34:27Speaker 1: forced him to come right around. And at one point
- 34:32Speaker 1: I the deer almost acted like and maybe with me
- 34:36Speaker 1: being a little paranoid from watching him that long, but
- 34:40Speaker 1: it almost seemed like he caught a little bit of me. Um.
- 34:45Speaker 1: But then he calmed back down and then and then
- 34:49Speaker 1: moved through. So that structure kind of kind of helped
- 34:53Speaker 1: that deer kind of it forced him through where I
- 34:57Speaker 1: wanted him. Um, It's that makes sense, yeah, and it does.
- 35:02Speaker 1: It's it's one of those things. Um, I'm always looking
- 35:05Speaker 1: for that. And when you find something like if it's
- 35:08Speaker 1: the blowdowns, or if it's a river or a creek
- 35:11Speaker 1: or a big drop off ditch or something like that,
- 35:14Speaker 1: it's great. And then I just it seems like, for
- 35:17Speaker 1: whatever reason, with my luck, whenever I want to find
- 35:19Speaker 1: something like that, I'm in like the most wide open
- 35:23Speaker 1: flat terrain with nothing special, It's gonna help me work
- 35:26Speaker 1: it out. In too many doughs or something like that.
- 35:28Speaker 1: So that's, uh, it's it's always tricky, but that that puzzle,
- 35:33Speaker 1: I guess is what what makes it so interesting. Yeah,
- 35:37Speaker 1: because you never know, I mean, and you have to
- 35:40Speaker 1: you have to try stuff, and you have to be
- 35:42Speaker 1: you know, trust me, I've I've blown. I've blown some
- 35:46Speaker 1: pretty good opportunities or or um, you know, I've gotten
- 35:50Speaker 1: you know, busted before they ever, you know, made it
- 35:54Speaker 1: to me to be able to get a shot. But um,
- 35:57Speaker 1: if you don't take any chances ever, you're you're you're
- 36:03Speaker 1: taking a lot of opportunities away from yourself from filling tags. Well,
- 36:08Speaker 1: it seems like that's something that's kind of consistent with
- 36:12Speaker 1: with some of the guys that that you that you
- 36:16Speaker 1: hang out with. It seems like, I mean, for example,
- 36:19Speaker 1: andre Quisto, he's one of those people that a lot
- 36:21Speaker 1: of us have listened to some of the things he
- 36:23Speaker 1: said that that sounded like super aggressive, you know, going
- 36:27Speaker 1: there and like like you like he told you that
- 36:28Speaker 1: one day, like going there and blow him out of
- 36:30Speaker 1: his bed, or you know the infamous bumping dump kind
- 36:33Speaker 1: of tactic that I've heard him talk about. Um, I
- 36:36Speaker 1: mean his that has has that mindset is that something?
- 36:40Speaker 1: Is that a mindset that he has helped you developed too?
- 36:43Speaker 1: Or or or how do you or or Andre or
- 36:46Speaker 1: any of those guys? How do you? How do you?
- 36:49Speaker 1: I don't know what I'm trying to stay here. Just
- 36:50Speaker 1: I guess I'm trying to say, is how do you
- 36:53Speaker 1: walk that line? How do you know when to get aggressive?
- 36:56Speaker 1: How do you do it the right way? I don't
- 36:59Speaker 1: know what's your thoughts on that general issue. So I think, Um,
- 37:05Speaker 1: I never I don't get aggressive, like right off the bat.
- 37:10Speaker 1: You know, I let some things kind of happen. And
- 37:13Speaker 1: if I can kill a deer on an edge of
- 37:16Speaker 1: a field or a food plot or whatever it may,
- 37:20Speaker 1: maybe you know, I'll go the safer route. Um. But
- 37:28Speaker 1: I also I also get a little bit of I know,
- 37:32Speaker 1: sometimes I only have two or three hunts, and I
- 37:36Speaker 1: gotta you know, I just know that a deer is
- 37:38Speaker 1: gonna figure me out. Um. I've I've got down out
- 37:43Speaker 1: of a tree before and stuck a trail camera right
- 37:45Speaker 1: on a tree before in video mode, just to see. Man,
- 37:49Speaker 1: you know what, I wonder if he's deer, you know,
- 37:51Speaker 1: you see a big dough and she cuts your tracks
- 37:53Speaker 1: and she and she trails you like a coon dog
- 37:57Speaker 1: right through the tree. I always wonder, like at night,
- 38:00Speaker 1: turey I leave, does this happen? And I've I've stuck
- 38:05Speaker 1: a camera on a tree before, and and pad dear
- 38:09Speaker 1: that I was that I was hunting at the time,
- 38:12Speaker 1: trail me to my tree breaking. Yeah, So you're like, so,
- 38:19Speaker 1: I you know, it's all situational. You have to follow
- 38:28Speaker 1: your gut of when to get aggressive or when to
- 38:33Speaker 1: set back and try to hunt those edges and and
- 38:39Speaker 1: let things happen that way. Um. I the rut. You know,
- 38:46Speaker 1: by the time I get to October or so, I
- 38:50Speaker 1: start getting antsy like a big old buck because I'm like,
- 38:53Speaker 1: oh god, I don't have that deer down yet. And
- 38:56Speaker 1: I start getting a little like I know what's going
- 38:59Speaker 1: to happen. He's going to he's gonna get up on
- 39:03Speaker 1: his feet and he's going to start searching other properties.
- 39:06Speaker 1: Somebody else is gonna kill him, get by a car. Um.
- 39:10Speaker 1: So when I start getting at that time frame, UM,
- 39:15Speaker 1: a lot of times I'm just like I'm just gonna
- 39:16Speaker 1: go for broke. You know, I screwed up and screwed
- 39:19Speaker 1: up because he's gonna leave the property and be all
- 39:21Speaker 1: over the place anyways, So it's it's either now or never.
- 39:26Speaker 1: When's the last time ahead? So that no, I was
- 39:32Speaker 1: just I was just gonna say, so sometimes that's when
- 39:34Speaker 1: that's when that kind of triggers me to to get
- 39:37Speaker 1: much more aggressive and and start trying to kill those
- 39:42Speaker 1: deer more in their bedrooms. So I was gonna say,
- 39:45Speaker 1: when's the last time you swung for the fences like that?
- 39:50Speaker 1: And it paid off. Um actually this past year. Ah,
- 40:00Speaker 1: It's funny because uh myself and uh Andre and Cody
- 40:07Speaker 1: and a few of us have talked about this before.
- 40:09Speaker 1: I don't know where this was ever, wherever this was
- 40:13Speaker 1: wrote and why this ever become a big, you know,
- 40:15Speaker 1: hot topic, but of not Honey Mornings in October it
- 40:20Speaker 1: was like, oh, you can't do that, you know. It's
- 40:22Speaker 1: like somebody said that, and that was like, and I
- 40:25Speaker 1: think there's some truth to that, but I also think that, um,
- 40:33Speaker 1: you can. You can kill a good buck two in
- 40:34Speaker 1: the mornings. And this past year, the deer that I
- 40:39Speaker 1: that I was hunting and he got really he you know,
- 40:43Speaker 1: I sat back and all of a sudden, I just
- 40:45Speaker 1: I see this, dear, and he's getting super active in
- 40:47Speaker 1: the morning. And it was like mid October cameras, you're
- 40:51Speaker 1: seeing that. Yeah, yeah, just from trail cameras. And I
- 40:55Speaker 1: see this, dear, and he's just he's getting super active
- 40:57Speaker 1: in the morning and I and I typically would probably
- 41:00Speaker 1: wait a little bit, but I'm like, you know what
- 41:02Speaker 1: that cameras, I mean, it's not lying to you. I mean,
- 41:05Speaker 1: this deer is walking in broad daylight in the mornings,
- 41:09Speaker 1: and and he was working some scrapes um next to
- 41:12Speaker 1: a little food plot that I had, and um, yeah,
- 41:17Speaker 1: and there was another one of those times is like
- 41:22Speaker 1: this is this is when you've got to be aggressive
- 41:24Speaker 1: and like come out of your your comfort zone and
- 41:28Speaker 1: get in there and try to kill the deer. And
- 41:31Speaker 1: I went in there and I hunted the deer one
- 41:33Speaker 1: time and killed him. Um. So, so those morning hunts
- 41:37Speaker 1: in October, like you said, notoriously taboo, and and like
- 41:42Speaker 1: you said, it seems like sometimes for a good reason,
- 41:44Speaker 1: because they can be tricky. I've been really gun shay
- 41:47Speaker 1: about that tour, about those mornings too, But it seems
- 41:50Speaker 1: like if you if you've got the right situation and
- 41:52Speaker 1: you do the right things, you can pull it off
- 41:56Speaker 1: without spooking him on the way in or whatever. Can
- 41:59Speaker 1: you can you just how you actually got in there
- 42:01Speaker 1: and set up without blowing them out, because it's just
- 42:04Speaker 1: so many times as mature bucks seemed to come back. Now,
- 42:07Speaker 1: I know your cameras are telling you he wasn't coming
- 42:08Speaker 1: back early, But how did you get in there? Was
- 42:11Speaker 1: it a hanging hunt in the morning? How did you
- 42:13Speaker 1: pull all that off? So it was a hanging hut
- 42:18Speaker 1: in the morning. Um. And I was actually set up
- 42:22Speaker 1: in a big pine tree, and so my access in
- 42:29Speaker 1: that place is is really really good. Actually, I jump,
- 42:33Speaker 1: I jump a fence and walk with the horses in there.
- 42:40Speaker 1: And these horses, these horses will typically like walk right
- 42:44Speaker 1: with me in there, so it kind of, you know,
- 42:47Speaker 1: it kind of covers up everything that's going on. And
- 42:51Speaker 1: I just walk with the horses all the way down.
- 42:53Speaker 1: And then I just jumped the fence and it's literally
- 42:57Speaker 1: from where the horses are to that tree is thirty
- 43:02Speaker 1: arts maybe, and I can slide right in and get
- 43:08Speaker 1: set up. Um. And you know, I only use a
- 43:13Speaker 1: couple of sticks because with those you know, those pine trees,
- 43:16Speaker 1: there's so many branches and and um, so I end
- 43:19Speaker 1: up using a bunch of branches and stuff like that,
- 43:21Speaker 1: so there's not a lot of that time and then
- 43:23Speaker 1: just throw the stand in. So the access, you know,
- 43:27Speaker 1: the axis is so so key in that spot and
- 43:30Speaker 1: being able to to get in there um in the morning.
- 43:35Speaker 1: If that deer was doing that on another farm where
- 43:38Speaker 1: I didn't have that kind of access, I don't know,
- 43:42Speaker 1: you know, I might have thought different. I might have said, Okay,
- 43:44Speaker 1: well let me see, I'll let things develop more for
- 43:49Speaker 1: the evenings. But that moon phase, UM, which I'm a
- 43:54Speaker 1: pretty big believer in the moon in the moon phase
- 43:58Speaker 1: of dictating a lot of deer when they when they moved,
- 44:01Speaker 1: I think weather trump's everything. But uh, you know, coming
- 44:07Speaker 1: off of that full moon, UM, on the back side
- 44:12Speaker 1: of those full moons, seemed like the mornings are just
- 44:16Speaker 1: really good and they're just really the deer just really active.
- 44:20Speaker 1: And that's exactly what was going on that morning. And
- 44:26Speaker 1: and I do believe that's what had him on his feet,
- 44:31Speaker 1: UM because prior to that, probably five six days prior
- 44:35Speaker 1: to that, the we had a good rising moon and
- 44:39Speaker 1: he and and he got real active for like two
- 44:42Speaker 1: days um in the in the evenings, and I was
- 44:47Speaker 1: out of town on a work trip and I had
- 44:50Speaker 1: a cell came in there and it was taken and
- 44:53Speaker 1: I'm getting these pictures and I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 44:56Speaker 1: I'm about to leave this work trips. The downside of
- 44:58Speaker 1: those cell cameras, Yeah, d your nuts. So I know so,
- 45:06Speaker 1: and you know, I just couldn't you know the fact
- 45:09Speaker 1: that every all the kids. And the other thing too,
- 45:12Speaker 1: was it was one of the it was one of
- 45:14Speaker 1: the first good cold fronts of October. And those first
- 45:18Speaker 1: cold fronts of October, like that first one, that's just
- 45:23Speaker 1: always killer. So you gotta you gotta elaborate on your moon,
- 45:28Speaker 1: on your moon and stuff a little bit more. Do
- 45:30Speaker 1: you feel do you pretty much follow the Red Moon
- 45:33Speaker 1: Moon Guide uh theory verbatim? Or do you have any
- 45:38Speaker 1: kind of angles on it that make you particularly excited
- 45:41Speaker 1: about certain days or times or anything like that. How
- 45:43Speaker 1: do you use that? You know, I do believe in
- 45:49Speaker 1: that whole. I do believe in the Moon Guide and
- 45:52Speaker 1: all that. I do think there's a lot of truth
- 45:54Speaker 1: in that. And Adam Hayes that actually he was turned
- 45:58Speaker 1: turned me onto it years ago. Oh when White Televiicitions
- 46:01Speaker 1: was you know, first starting off, and I remember, you know,
- 46:06Speaker 1: that being brought up then and um, I think you
- 46:11Speaker 1: have about four days four to five days prior to
- 46:15Speaker 1: a full moon that is just killer in the evenings,
- 46:19Speaker 1: and then there's about a three day span um when
- 46:23Speaker 1: that full moon is going on it just doesn't seem
- 46:27Speaker 1: to be that great. And then you got about four
- 46:30Speaker 1: or five probably four days um roughly after that full moon,
- 46:36Speaker 1: and it just seems like the evening or the mornings
- 46:39Speaker 1: are just really really good. And I like when when
- 46:45Speaker 1: you're coming off the back side of that full moon,
- 46:48Speaker 1: that's a that's a great time to slip in and
- 46:52Speaker 1: hunt a buck in a bed, just because they're gonna
- 46:55Speaker 1: be getting back late and you have you actually have
- 46:58Speaker 1: a chance of getting in there and beating them in
- 47:01Speaker 1: and and um and killing them on the way back. End. Yeah,
- 47:06Speaker 1: it seems like it seems um that that approach right
- 47:13Speaker 1: there with the moon is just another one of those
- 47:15Speaker 1: sets of criteria that points right back to what we're
- 47:18Speaker 1: talking about earlier, like when do you swing for the fences?
- 47:20Speaker 1: When do you not? And you mentioned sometimes the trail
- 47:23Speaker 1: camera data, sometimes it's the moon, or sometimes, like you
- 47:27Speaker 1: said earlier, weather Trump's all but best case scenarios when
- 47:30Speaker 1: all three combined, right, Like when you see all those
- 47:33Speaker 1: things all meshing and pointing towards Wow, tomorrow, all these
- 47:36Speaker 1: things line up. That's at least for me, when I
- 47:39Speaker 1: get like the jitters, I can't sleep the night before,
- 47:42Speaker 1: when I'm getting geared up that day, I'm just like pumped.
- 47:45Speaker 1: I'm already sweating, Like those are the Knights, Like I know,
- 47:48Speaker 1: this is the killing Knight, this is the killing day,
- 47:50Speaker 1: whatever it is. Um, those are my very favorite parts
- 47:55Speaker 1: of the season. When you have that anticipation and I
- 47:59Speaker 1: think a lot of things that you just said there too,
- 48:02Speaker 1: it's at confidence. You're going into that hunt with that confidence.
- 48:07Speaker 1: And I think when you're confident and you're set up
- 48:12Speaker 1: and you're scouting, I think that's just so I don't know,
- 48:18Speaker 1: you're as a mindset and it just it just puts
- 48:22Speaker 1: you in the game. Um, because if you're setting there
- 48:26Speaker 1: and your second guess and your stuff yourself, then you
- 48:30Speaker 1: probably should get down. Yeah, that's not a good place
- 48:34Speaker 1: to be that mindset you mentioned. That's that's an interesting thing. Um.
- 48:39Speaker 1: I mean, you've had tremendous amount of consistent success. Uh,
- 48:45Speaker 1: your buddies like Andre or Heath or Cody or Adam has.
- 48:49Speaker 1: All these guys are all consistently getting it done. Um,
- 48:53Speaker 1: and in a lot of different places too. So it's
- 48:55Speaker 1: not like you can't just say, oh, it's just because
- 48:57Speaker 1: they hunted acre farm with huge bucks all time. You're
- 49:02Speaker 1: getting done different kinds of places in somewhat different kinds
- 49:05Speaker 1: of ways. I gotta believe mindset is one of the
- 49:08Speaker 1: things that's probably consistent within you know, a lot of
- 49:12Speaker 1: you guys. If you had to kind of describe some
- 49:17Speaker 1: aspects of what that mindset is or what some of
- 49:19Speaker 1: these consistent things are that that maybe you and your
- 49:21Speaker 1: buddies all have in common, that you've learned from Andre
- 49:24Speaker 1: or anything, that what would you think those things are
- 49:26Speaker 1: that kind of set those elite deer hunters apart from
- 49:30Speaker 1: your average ho home. Um. I think just having so
- 49:38Speaker 1: much confidence and you're scouting that you just truly believe
- 49:44Speaker 1: in your head that when you go in, you don't
- 49:48Speaker 1: you never just sit to sit, Like when you go
- 49:53Speaker 1: and you set you truly believe that you're going to
- 49:58Speaker 1: kill the deer that you're after that night. Um. I'm
- 50:03Speaker 1: so I'm a busy guy, um with work and family
- 50:07Speaker 1: and everything, and like I don't you know, you know,
- 50:11Speaker 1: I have a young son and and I don't want
- 50:14Speaker 1: to miss out on some of those things, you know,
- 50:18Speaker 1: with my family and stuff like that, because I'm just
- 50:22Speaker 1: going out to set to set when I I when
- 50:26Speaker 1: I go to set, I go to kill. And I
- 50:31Speaker 1: think that's exactly the way that those guys think about
- 50:35Speaker 1: it as well. They have done every bit of scouting
- 50:41Speaker 1: that they can possibly think of doing and put a
- 50:45Speaker 1: lot of different factors in their favor, from the wind
- 50:51Speaker 1: to the moon to a cold front or all those
- 50:54Speaker 1: things that when they go in, I think all I
- 50:58Speaker 1: think every one of those guys, as you mentioned, I
- 51:00Speaker 1: think they go in and I'm killing the steer tonight,
- 51:03Speaker 1: and that's it. So that's scouting. How do you? How
- 51:07Speaker 1: do you? How do you scout the right way to
- 51:12Speaker 1: get you to that point? How do you? What are
- 51:14Speaker 1: some of the things that you're doing? And I know
- 51:15Speaker 1: you've mentioned some of that already, but if you had
- 51:18Speaker 1: to like describe how to scout in such a way
- 51:21Speaker 1: to give you that bulletproof confidence, what are some of
- 51:24Speaker 1: those very most important things? Because I think when people
- 51:26Speaker 1: here scouting, your new hunter might think, oh, walk through
- 51:29Speaker 1: the woods, and if I see a rub cool, I'm
- 51:31Speaker 1: gonna hunt that. But then when I talked to some
- 51:34Speaker 1: of those elite hunters, it's a different level. I'm kind
- 51:37Speaker 1: of curious what that different level looks like for you.
- 51:41Speaker 1: You know. Typically, Well, if I'm speaking of here at
- 51:47Speaker 1: home in Ohio, UM, I put a lot of eggs
- 51:51Speaker 1: in my back in that basket of shooting a good
- 51:54Speaker 1: buck in October or late season. I am not shot
- 52:00Speaker 1: a lot of bucks in November here. I just haven't.
- 52:04Speaker 1: I haven't had a lot of luck with it, and
- 52:05Speaker 1: that I tend to to leave and go out of
- 52:08Speaker 1: out of state. But I do so much in regards
- 52:13Speaker 1: to learning the deer that i'm that I'm after a
- 52:16Speaker 1: lot of times. I know of these bucks for several years.
- 52:20Speaker 1: The buck I killed this past year, I knew for
- 52:22Speaker 1: three years. The deer that I killed in two thousand
- 52:25Speaker 1: and eighteen, I knew of that buck for four years.
- 52:28Speaker 1: So I had a lot of information. And I think,
- 52:33Speaker 1: like a lot of guys do these days, keeping very
- 52:36Speaker 1: detailed troll camera records, paying close to attention to dates. Um,
- 52:43Speaker 1: I tend to see a lot of deer, uh do
- 52:47Speaker 1: the same things and the same dates on the same locations. UM.
- 52:52Speaker 1: And I also look for that sign that was left
- 52:55Speaker 1: from the year before, and in as far as maybe
- 53:00Speaker 1: it's big rubs or maybe it's at one scrape that
- 53:04Speaker 1: got opened back up again, UM, and knowing that that
- 53:08Speaker 1: deer had did that same thing the year before, and
- 53:14Speaker 1: UM and knowing my farms UM to be able to
- 53:20Speaker 1: manipulate that situation to use all those all those scouting
- 53:26Speaker 1: tools against that deer. UM. If that makes sense. I mean,
- 53:32Speaker 1: it's kind of the way I do it. I use
- 53:34Speaker 1: a lot of cameras. I think last year. I think
- 53:36Speaker 1: I ran about cameras last year and how many unlike
- 53:41Speaker 1: a I don't know if we're saying, ah, per hundred
- 53:44Speaker 1: acres or per forty acres or something like that, Like
- 53:47Speaker 1: what kind of density of cameras in a small area
- 53:49Speaker 1: do you run, um, say it's a fifty acre farm,
- 53:55Speaker 1: I might have you know, maybe before okay, maybe four
- 54:00Speaker 1: or five something like that. And some of those cameras
- 54:03Speaker 1: that I put out, and you know, some of them
- 54:05Speaker 1: I put out like really early, and I just I
- 54:08Speaker 1: don't a lot of times they just soaked and I
- 54:12Speaker 1: never go in there and mess with them or anything,
- 54:14Speaker 1: just because of where maybe they're at UM, depending on
- 54:19Speaker 1: the situation. UM. And then I will at the you know,
- 54:24Speaker 1: seasons over, I'll go in there and pull that SD
- 54:27Speaker 1: card and then UM and dig and dig through it
- 54:30Speaker 1: and start building the folder for you know, certain books
- 54:35Speaker 1: and what they were doing and at certain times and
- 54:38Speaker 1: stuff like that. Yeah, it's something that I've done a
- 54:41Speaker 1: little bit and trying to do more of two. But
- 54:44Speaker 1: it brings up a good question or something that I
- 54:47Speaker 1: wondered a lot about, which is UM doing what you're
- 54:51Speaker 1: describing there when you are targeting a specific buck and
- 54:54Speaker 1: trying to learn that buck and kind of build up
- 54:56Speaker 1: that portfolio of information like you described something like I've
- 55:00Speaker 1: kind of fallen into a rut a little bit with
- 55:02Speaker 1: my cameras where I know this, this is some properties
- 55:04Speaker 1: that I know already. I know good places to get pictures.
- 55:07Speaker 1: I kind of use them just to keep tabs on
- 55:09Speaker 1: kind of inventory of are these bucks still around? They're
- 55:12Speaker 1: They're safe spots to get to. I can easily come
- 55:15Speaker 1: in and out. I'm not blowing things up, UM, But
- 55:18Speaker 1: I have not used cameras as much to try to
- 55:23Speaker 1: micro pattern a specific buck on a specific gear UM
- 55:27Speaker 1: like some guys do. Some people will take their cameras
- 55:29Speaker 1: and keep moving them. Every time they see a buck
- 55:31Speaker 1: or every time they get new pictures, they kind of
- 55:33Speaker 1: tighten the noose to the cameras. How do you go
- 55:35Speaker 1: about with your placement? Are you doing kind of like
- 55:38Speaker 1: the the safe inventory or do you move them around
- 55:41Speaker 1: to try to fine tune what that buck is doing? Um?
- 55:45Speaker 1: What are you doing there? Um? Typically? I typically I
- 55:50Speaker 1: don't move them a lot. Typically I'm getting what I
- 55:55Speaker 1: want UM already. Unless I see a deer from Afar
- 55:59Speaker 1: and I not gotten a picture of that deer or
- 56:01Speaker 1: something like that, then maybe, UM, you know, maybe I
- 56:06Speaker 1: might move a camera. But even then, a lot of
- 56:08Speaker 1: times if I see a deer from Afar and then
- 56:11Speaker 1: my next move is slide over there and killing um
- 56:16Speaker 1: instead of trying to go over there, and you know, um,
- 56:19Speaker 1: booker up the spot by putting in a camera or
- 56:21Speaker 1: something like that. UM. Typically, yeah, I do. I do
- 56:27Speaker 1: make a lot of I like mox scrapes. I think
- 56:30Speaker 1: they work great. UM And especially when you know being
- 56:37Speaker 1: able to um you get inventory or um you know
- 56:43Speaker 1: something along those lines. UM. What's been a real big
- 56:47Speaker 1: tool for me for the last probably three years is
- 56:50Speaker 1: I have one of the electric bike, and that's been
- 56:55Speaker 1: a huge because I can literally fly around these these
- 57:01Speaker 1: farms and nothing ever knows I'm there because my feet
- 57:04Speaker 1: are even hit the ground. I mean, there's a lot
- 57:07Speaker 1: of times I won't even let my feet hit the
- 57:09Speaker 1: ground because I'll just pull right up and grab ahold
- 57:13Speaker 1: of a you know, tree with my with my gloves
- 57:17Speaker 1: on and pull an SD car out and boom, I'm I'm,
- 57:21Speaker 1: I'm I'm taking off again. That's actually that's helped me too,
- 57:25Speaker 1: And in regards to being able to hunt stands multiple times,
- 57:31Speaker 1: because before it was, you know, the first time in
- 57:34Speaker 1: was the best time. And well now, um, I don't
- 57:40Speaker 1: think those deer and they're not cutting my back trail anymore.
- 57:45Speaker 1: Um I've killed a couple of bucks with the with
- 57:47Speaker 1: my bike at the base of my tree. Really, that's funny.
- 57:50Speaker 1: I was just thinking about this earlier today, was kind
- 57:53Speaker 1: of debating internally are the e bikes worth it? Are they?
- 57:57Speaker 1: Is it just a fat is it? You know? Is it?
- 58:00Speaker 1: I don't know, is it all it's cracked up to be.
- 58:02Speaker 1: I've I've bounced back and forth. I've certainly seen or
- 58:06Speaker 1: I understand the concept. The fact that you know, not
- 58:10Speaker 1: having your boots hit in the ground is gonna be
- 58:12Speaker 1: a good thing. And it seems to me that you know,
- 58:15Speaker 1: rolling through on a bike is gonna be less less
- 58:21Speaker 1: concerning to a deer probably then seeing or hearing the
- 58:24Speaker 1: footsteps of a person. Would you say that, you know,
- 58:28Speaker 1: those are the things that are making it so useful,
- 58:30Speaker 1: And it kind of said you kind of said this
- 58:33Speaker 1: made a big difference, but you you're bought in. Huh.
- 58:38Speaker 1: I can ride right by dear better betted on that bike.
- 58:43Speaker 1: And one thing I I have noticed, it's funny. I
- 58:47Speaker 1: can ride right by deer that are bedded on that
- 58:50Speaker 1: bike and as long as I don't stop or make
- 58:53Speaker 1: a much eye contact. You know, if I really jerk
- 58:57Speaker 1: my head around, they don't seem to like that and
- 58:59Speaker 1: they get up or if I slow up or stop,
- 59:03Speaker 1: I mean they're going to get up a move. But
- 59:06Speaker 1: I feel like there's a lot of times I can
- 59:08Speaker 1: slide right by them. Um they stay betted. They you know,
- 59:12Speaker 1: maybe it's three or four does better on a fence
- 59:14Speaker 1: row or something like that, and I can just go
- 59:17Speaker 1: right by them where maybe in years past they would
- 59:20Speaker 1: get up, take off and run into where the deer
- 59:23Speaker 1: that I'm trying to kill is and then you know
- 59:26Speaker 1: he's not coming out. Then if you know you've got
- 59:29Speaker 1: stuff like that going on. Um. And the other thing
- 59:33Speaker 1: is is like getting in and out of those tree
- 59:35Speaker 1: stand like big part of it is is how many
- 59:39Speaker 1: times have you walked in in mid October and it's
- 59:41Speaker 1: a little warm out and by the time you get there,
- 59:44Speaker 1: you've worked up a good little lather that bikes like
- 59:47Speaker 1: an air conditioning unit. Yeah, that's a good point. It's
- 59:52Speaker 1: a means tempting. Yeah, I I I love mine. Lind's
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: a huge And the other part of it is too, um.
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: You know you have if you have a family, and
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: you know sometimes we're limited on time. Sometimes the things
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: that might take us, say you're going to go check
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: trail cameras that day or or whatever it is, um,
- 1:00:19Speaker 1: or maybe you're gonna go over and just scout out
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: something real quick. I can do it in half the
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: time now and be home, um, spending my time or
- 1:00:33Speaker 1: more wisely, I've gotten done everything I wanted to in
- 1:00:37Speaker 1: the white Tail Woods, but now I'm back home, you know,
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: spending time with my family. Yeah, it's all about efficiency.
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: What do you think about impact from an e bike
- 1:00:51Speaker 1: compared to like an a TV or a UTV or
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: driving up with your truck and checking a camera. Do
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: you feel like it's even less of an impact than
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: something like that. I think driving up on a truck,
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: I just don't think. I don't think that bothers them
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: that much. The a t V s, I do think
- 1:01:10Speaker 1: that does bother them. I've seen it. I've I've been
- 1:01:14Speaker 1: in bedding areas hunting with deer around me, and here
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: like a t VS fire up on. Say I had
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: a lease or something like that with you know, a
- 1:01:25Speaker 1: couple of buddies or whatever, and they hear those a
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: t v s. And I'm telling you, they they do
- 1:01:31Speaker 1: not like them. They I think they've had a lot
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: of bad experiences with them, um over the years, and
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: they just seem to be bothered by just to sit
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: there and watch deer that are completely bedded and comfortable
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: and to hear that a TV. Now they're on their
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: feet and they're nervous. There definitely is a stronger noise association,
- 1:01:55Speaker 1: probably just because it's such an aggressive sound. I'm sure
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: they can have not They've got great ears no matter what.
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: They'll hear truck too, But yeah, it does. I do
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: wonder about that. When you're rolling through on a bike,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: it just just feel stealthier, and maybe that ends up
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: being the case. Yeah, I just and it is nice
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: though when you can, you know. I know, there's times
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: where I might have some cameras out where I can
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: pull right up with my truck and literally out the
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: passenger or at the driver's window, and um pull SD
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: cards And I don't think. I don't think that bothers. Um.
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: I know, tractors definitely don't bother them. I mean, oh
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: my god. There's times where I'm putting food plots in
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: and the deer just pouring out in the other section
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: of the food plot, you know, and um, they just
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: don't seem bothered by those, the tractors at all. Speaking
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: of that, UM, I've seen the same thing. But then
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: I've always worried. So I'm fast forward now towards the
- 1:02:56Speaker 1: harvest time. I had a situation where I was chasing
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: a buck last year during the fall, and I can't
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: remember exactly, it was sometime in November, and I had
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: a situation where the farmer had picked part of the
- 1:03:09Speaker 1: field but not all of it yet, and I went
- 1:03:12Speaker 1: in there for moved to the spot for the evening hunt,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: and just like two rows had been picked right in
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: the edge of the field. So I was sitting there
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: with the edge picked but still standing on the interior,
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: and everything was lined up good with wind. And I
- 1:03:23Speaker 1: think I saw him the day before something, and I
- 1:03:25Speaker 1: felt good that, you know, he'd be visible and would
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: come out here checking all these doughs that I thought
- 1:03:29Speaker 1: would flood into that just pick stuff. And the farmers
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: hadn't come. It was just about prime time, and I
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: thought this, this is ideal. And then they showed up
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: with like an hour and a half left or something
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: like that, and they started picking in and I I've
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: seen plenty of times where dear feel pretty comfortable with
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: the with the tractors and everything, But at the same time,
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: I haven't seen like a mature buck step out and
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: not be spooked. Once the tractor comes rolling by, you know,
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: within fifty yards him, he'll bump off into the woods
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: again and they come back out late or something like that.
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: So I decided, because of my positioning, I couldn't shoot
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: into the timber because there's a property line back there,
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: and my only shot would be if he came into
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: the field, and I decided, you know what, with the
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: tractors moving through here, I just don't think i'll actually
- 1:04:16Speaker 1: get a shot at him. I got to move to
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: another spot where he won't be you know, if he
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: does come through, he won't be spooked by that tractor
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: circling through over and over again. So I moved, and
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: then I sat there that whole time thinking maybe I
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: should have stayed. Maybe I should have stayed, because that's
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: where all the doors ended up being. Anyways, what have
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: you what have you found? As far as that? Would
- 1:04:34Speaker 1: you would you set up on a field that's getting
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: picked in November? Or would you try to get inside
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: a little bit? Um? I would probably try to get
- 1:04:46Speaker 1: inside if they're out there and during that time, and
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: if they're out there, you know, driving the grain wagons
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: and filling them up and run run on the combine
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: and stuff like that, I would probably step back a
- 1:04:59Speaker 1: little bit because I would just in my head, I
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: would think that a mature deer would not want to
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: be out there, um during that that time frame. Um.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: But then again, I've seen where you know, it's November
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: eight or ninth, you know, and there's dose out there.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: I've seen some You know, I've seen some big bucks
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: right out there with them too before. UM. I think
- 1:05:26Speaker 1: it all has to do with the timing of the
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: year of when that's you know, when that's happening, um where,
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: But then the following day after that's taken place, and
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: say they they've came in and picked the beans or
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: corn or whatever, you can guarantee you that that field
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: is gonna be hot for a good little bit. You
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: can't beat that. Um. Speaking of something like that, one
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: of the things that you mentioned a little bit ago,
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: and I wanted to go back to kind of all
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: around fresh hot inteler sign versus old sign or old
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: intel and kind of working off of annual trends or patterns.
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: So I know you you've said you've seen dear do
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: the same thing year after year to a degree. Um.
- 1:06:16Speaker 1: At the same time, I know I've I've heard you
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: say in folkus like Andre or Dan Infault or different
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: people get really fired up about fresh hot sign. How
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: do you think about the importance of those two things?
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: You know, if you see a red hot fresh rub,
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: big rub or something, is that more important to you
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: than knowing that such and such buck came through here?
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: You know, two weeks earlier the last two years. Um,
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: it's kind of curious what you think about the two
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: different types of sign, how that factors into your decision
- 1:06:49Speaker 1: making process. Um, I think, I mean, I'm going to
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: use every part of that. You know, I'm gonna use
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: the information that maybe documented through troll cameras over the
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: years of having a deer maybe moved through a certain
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: area at the same time. But uh, you know, I've
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: always been like, I've always been interested in sign and
- 1:07:17Speaker 1: big rubs. I mean that's always had me super excited.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: And you know, and I remember like years ago, always
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: you know, in scouting with my grandfather years ago. You know,
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: if you can stick four fingers in there, you know, um,
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: that's that's typically a good buck. And you know the
- 1:07:34Speaker 1: length of the track and and and uh you know,
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: and the way maybe a certain deer's track is is shaped,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: maybe he's got a you know, maybe there's a little
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: thing there to identify that deer from years past or whatever.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: But UM, I love fresh sign. I mean, the if
- 1:07:59Speaker 1: it's red hots fresh, I mean, there's nothing better. I
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: think a lot of times guys hunt, I think a
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: lot of guys hunts sign that's just too old, Like
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: you know, that's a week or two old. Um, where
- 1:08:13Speaker 1: I tend to Yeah, I look at it and and
- 1:08:16Speaker 1: try to soak it in. But um, if if if
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: I'm looking for big rubs, you know, I want sap
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: coming out of you know, I want something. I want
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: the sap coming out of that thing and fresh you know,
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: and the the fresh tracks or you know, the scrapes
- 1:08:32Speaker 1: that have just been hit or um. But I you know,
- 1:08:36Speaker 1: but then again, I sometimes I'll set back a little
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: bit and watch that sign and maybe see if I
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: can see that deer and then make my move. Um.
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: I do a lot of observations sets um. And if
- 1:08:53Speaker 1: I see a deer do something, I typically don't like
- 1:08:56Speaker 1: the let him do it again without killing him. Um.
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: I like to just go right in. Okay. So this
- 1:09:05Speaker 1: is another one of those things that I'm always finangling
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: with myself. Is what you just described. You see a
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: buck do something once and it's okay. Do you wait
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: to see if it's a trend or do you go
- 1:09:17Speaker 1: in there right away? It sounds like you go in
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: there right away. Um. When you tell me about how
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: you set up, do you set up as if he's
- 1:09:24Speaker 1: going to do the exact same thing, or do you
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: set up with some kind of knowledge. Okay, I know
- 1:09:31Speaker 1: he came from there, but now I think because the
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: wind is a tiny bit different, or because I think
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: something else. I just walked me through how you choose
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: to set up on that next day after the observation,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: because that's that's a really important move when you make
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: that that swing for the fence move. UM. I always, always,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: the wind is always the biggest factor in it all,
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: whatever the wind's doing. If it's the same thing as
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: it was the day before, which is preferably what you
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: really want, because then you know he felt comfortable enough
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: to move, then then then that determines a lot of
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: how you know, how I move in. And I still
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: I still go with that flirting with disaster um nine
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: times out of ten because I just seemed to I
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: see a lot more big deer on their feet by
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: using a wind that you know has something to their advantage. Um,
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: And just try to get off to the you know,
- 1:10:36Speaker 1: one side of that um. And and if it's not
- 1:10:42Speaker 1: the same, then I might say, Okay, I think he's
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: gonna you know, I play it out of my head
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: and I think, okay, maybe he's going to, you know,
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: hook around this end um of this ridge or this
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: you know, this field edge or whatever it might be,
- 1:11:05Speaker 1: and just try to think. I try to anticipate his
- 1:11:09Speaker 1: movement um basically off of just if I was him,
- 1:11:16Speaker 1: what I would do. Do you do you hear something
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: I'm curious about. Do you feel like the wind direction
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: influences not just the way they're going to travel, but
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: also where they choose to bed. Because when when I'm
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: thinking through that scenario you just laid out there, the
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: first thing I thought was, Okay, just like you said,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: if it's the same wind the next day, then I'm
- 1:11:39Speaker 1: going to go in there kind of thinking he'll do
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: something similar because the winds the same. If the wind
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: is different again, I would think, okay, it's a different wind,
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: So I'm gonna make some assumptions he's gonna adjust a
- 1:11:49Speaker 1: little bit. But I can still take something from the
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: observation yesterday, which maybe could be Okay, I know where
- 1:11:55Speaker 1: he came from, So let's say it's an evening hunt
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: and I'll make I can then assume he's probably betted
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: somewhere over there. That's the clue I'm going to take
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: away from the observation yesterday. But if it's a different wind,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: do I need to worry that maybe he betted somewhere
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: completely different because it was a different wind direction. How
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: do you feel about wind impacting that? Oh for sure.
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: I mean I've seen them bed all the way. Say
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: you have a field and there's two different wood lots.
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: I've seen them bed you know, uh in one wood
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: lot one day based off the wind, and then the
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: next day everything switches and their bed in a complete
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: in the in the wood lot across from the field. Um.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: I definitely, I definitely, I think that is a huge factor.
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: And I you know, I think Bucks have typically I
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: think they have two or three different betting areas, um,
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: you know, based upon what the what the wind and
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: the train is doing. And um, you know, I think
- 1:12:55Speaker 1: they're you know, and you get into stuff, you know,
- 1:12:59Speaker 1: you get into stuff with some hills and some some
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: valleys and stuff like that, and they're gonna they're gonna
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: use those those thermals to their advantage, um in a
- 1:13:10Speaker 1: in a big way too. And U uh um, yeah,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: I I totally agree with you. And I think that
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: they have several different betting areas typically. No, I don't
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: think one buck has just one bit one bed. I
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: just don't think that's possible. Yeah, Now, have you ever
- 1:13:28Speaker 1: nailed down a buck so well that you could predict, all, right,
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: if I've got a south or west, he's probably gonna
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: bettered in this little area. If I've got a north
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: or east, he's probably better in this area, or anything
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: like that. Have you ever been able to nail it
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: that consistently that you could predict which general betting area
- 1:13:46Speaker 1: he's using based off a wind direction or anything. I
- 1:13:50Speaker 1: would to say I can completely um, because everything it
- 1:13:54Speaker 1: seems like every time I think I have a completely
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: figured out, then I get, uh, you know, the master
- 1:14:03Speaker 1: makes me look like a fool. Yeah. Um, But yeah,
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: I think I've I've come close to that, But I
- 1:14:12Speaker 1: can't say that I've ever had it so narrowed down
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: that um um that it was just a done deal
- 1:14:25Speaker 1: sort of thing, which you kind of have to work
- 1:14:27Speaker 1: as if you do right. Like this is one of
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: the things I was thinking to myself about last year.
- 1:14:31Speaker 1: I started going into hunts with this idea that sometimes
- 1:14:37Speaker 1: you make assumptions like you have these clues, like you've
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: you've watched this buck and you've seen and so you
- 1:14:42Speaker 1: you go into a hunt and you assume, Okay, I think,
- 1:14:44Speaker 1: because I've got a certain winter action, he's probably bettered
- 1:14:47Speaker 1: over here, or you saw him moving last night and
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: he went into this food source or something. So you
- 1:14:52Speaker 1: have these different clues and you're assuming that something's going
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: to happen. I used to go into my hunts assuming
- 1:14:59Speaker 1: something would have upen or thinking something would happen. But
- 1:15:01Speaker 1: then I'd keep on trying to prepare for contingencies. So
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, I think he might come out into
- 1:15:07Speaker 1: this food source, but he might go here instead, but
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: he might go here. So then sometimes i'd find myself
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: picking a tree that kind of is in the middle
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: of it, so okay, maybe he could come here and
- 1:15:17Speaker 1: maybe come here, and maybe come here. But then last year,
- 1:15:20Speaker 1: I think it was I started saying, well, if you
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: do that, then you're never in the perfect place for
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: the one thing, and so if he does come through
- 1:15:28Speaker 1: and he doesn't do the one perfect thing, you're screwed. Um.
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: So I started operating under this another idea where I
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: was I would instead going to hunt and I'm thinking
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: through these clues and I'm making assumptions. But then I'm
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: going to eventually pick what I think is the very
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: most likely thing, like my Plan A, and then I'm
- 1:15:47Speaker 1: gonna set up perfectly for Plan A and assume that's
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: the truth. So I'm gonna say, Okay, it's a south wind.
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: I'm going to assume he's better in this area. So
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: now I'm going to do everything perfect for that scenario.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: I'm gonna make sure that there's no way my wind
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: blows in there. I'm gonna make sure there's no way
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: that something happens. I'm gonna set up in the perfect
- 1:16:07Speaker 1: tree for this scenario, um, rather than just being in
- 1:16:10Speaker 1: like a general zone because I think, well, this, this, this,
- 1:16:13Speaker 1: and I can't remember where it was I heard you
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: say this, but you said something very similar. You said
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: that there was a shift for you when you went
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: from hunting the area to hunting the tree. Is that
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: do you think through things kind of similar to what
- 1:16:26Speaker 1: I was just describing there or how do you do that? Oh?
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: I for sure that was a big when I first
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: started like really getting after like and I sat out
- 1:16:39Speaker 1: and I was like, man, I want to I want
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: to kill it. Pope and young Block, you know that's
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: a gross Pope and young Deer that's really what I
- 1:16:44Speaker 1: want to do. And I had a climber and you know,
- 1:16:49Speaker 1: I mean, you're so limited with those climbers. And I
- 1:16:53Speaker 1: felt like a lot of times I was just off
- 1:16:56Speaker 1: the mark because I was forced to hunt uh a
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: tree that was more like a telephone pole than aware
- 1:17:05Speaker 1: I truly needed to be. And then once I I
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: switched over and got introduced to you know that climbing
- 1:17:15Speaker 1: sticks and hang on and stuff like that, that changed
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: everything for me as far as being able to, um,
- 1:17:23Speaker 1: not just see the deer that I was after, but
- 1:17:26Speaker 1: to be in the tree and and get a shot
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: opportunity at a good buck. That that changed a lot
- 1:17:35Speaker 1: of things for me as far as my success rate,
- 1:17:38Speaker 1: um going going up from there. And I think a
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: lot of times we we searched for these perfect situations
- 1:17:48Speaker 1: and you know where you're not giving up anything at all, um,
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: you and you just have to you just have to
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: learn to kind of live with that part of it, Like, man,
- 1:18:00Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta give some stuff up here because
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: it's just I mean, that's where I need to be.
- 1:18:04Speaker 1: But you know, um, they're gonna have you know these
- 1:18:08Speaker 1: you know this these deer or the I mean they're
- 1:18:11Speaker 1: gonna have some advantage um to that. Um, And that
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: just made when I started hunting the tree is when,
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: you know, when my success went went way up. I
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: think a lot of people just fall on the run
- 1:18:30Speaker 1: of of you know, so many people out there just
- 1:18:34Speaker 1: you know, they have their ladder stands and they get
- 1:18:36Speaker 1: out there every single year and kind of hunt the
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: same spots and and a lot of guys do you
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: know they do well with that. But um, but I
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: also see a lot of those guys, you know, kill
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: a good buck every three or four years, and I
- 1:18:50Speaker 1: just I work way too hard at this to kill
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: one you know that far and few in between. I
- 1:18:58Speaker 1: you know, I want to kill a good buck every
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: year if not too Yeah, do you think that you're
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: are you picking the tree? In most scenarios for you?
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: Is is picking the killing tree happening in March? Or
- 1:19:10Speaker 1: is it happening on October? Um? Both? I think that's
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: I think it's both. I think a lot there's times,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: especially here where I'm I'm scouting and um, and I
- 1:19:28Speaker 1: know a lot of my farms pretty well. Unless it's
- 1:19:30Speaker 1: a new piece of ground or something like that, then um,
- 1:19:33Speaker 1: if it's a new piece of ground, I won't hang
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: a stand on it at all, because I have to
- 1:19:39Speaker 1: hunt it to be able to figure that part of
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: it out. And sometimes it might take me a little
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: bit to figure that out. I feel like you need
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: sometimes a couple of years to really like dial that
- 1:19:50Speaker 1: in and say, okay, like I really really know, um,
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: what's going on. But if if it's a farm I've
- 1:19:58Speaker 1: been hunting for a while and I know it based
- 1:20:02Speaker 1: off of the deer movement I've seen in the past,
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: and so and so forth, and also maybe maybe there's
- 1:20:08Speaker 1: some crop rotation that year where maybe in uh a
- 1:20:13Speaker 1: year before that, or something I notice, Um, a certain
- 1:20:18Speaker 1: area was really yeah, I'll go in there and hang
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: a stand and and and leave it. Um. I have
- 1:20:24Speaker 1: quite a few stands that I leave in my farms.
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: But um, but then again, I also read that sign
- 1:20:32Speaker 1: and as season goes on, and and pay attention to
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: my cameras and and and make a move when I
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: need to. I mean when I when I go out
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: of state. UM, I typically never leave any stands hanging
- 1:20:49Speaker 1: anywhere on any farms I hunt out of state. I mean,
- 1:20:52Speaker 1: it's a scout mid day, it's a hang it I
- 1:20:56Speaker 1: hunted that evening, I'll leave all my stuff, including my
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: bow and everything in the tree, and I come right
- 1:21:03Speaker 1: back in haunted again the next morning, and either I'm
- 1:21:06Speaker 1: in the spot and I stay put based on if
- 1:21:09Speaker 1: the winds still good for me, and if it's not,
- 1:21:12Speaker 1: I just tear it back down and scout some more
- 1:21:15Speaker 1: and just repeat, repeat, repeat, until I kill a buck. Yeah.
- 1:21:20Speaker 1: I've always I've I've thought, and I've sort of wished,
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: but I can't quite make myself do it. But I've
- 1:21:27Speaker 1: always thought it would be pretty cool to just take
- 1:21:29Speaker 1: a season and not hunt and instead just follow someone around,
- 1:21:33Speaker 1: like follow you around, follow Andre around, follow Adam around,
- 1:21:37Speaker 1: and get to just kind of stand behind your shoulder
- 1:21:40Speaker 1: when you go into a scenario like that, and then
- 1:21:43Speaker 1: have you talk out loud everything you're thinking about as
- 1:21:46Speaker 1: you're walking through the woods and they're scouting session and
- 1:21:49Speaker 1: as you're you know, picking the tree, and as you're
- 1:21:52Speaker 1: sitting there in the tree that night and trying to
- 1:21:54Speaker 1: deliberate about what to do the next day. That would
- 1:21:57Speaker 1: be so fascinating. Um, I just can't give my can't
- 1:22:00Speaker 1: convince myself to give up my actual hunting. But if
- 1:22:03Speaker 1: if I did that, if I somehow convinced you to
- 1:22:07Speaker 1: allow me to walk with you in the woods hand
- 1:22:09Speaker 1: your doing your scouting midday, and you found the zone
- 1:22:14Speaker 1: and now you're going to pick the tree. Can you
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: walk me through what would be going through your mind
- 1:22:20Speaker 1: as you are trying to, like and maybe there's a
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: specific past scenario you can describe or maybe you can
- 1:22:25Speaker 1: imagine something, um, but kind of walk me through all
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: the things that are going through your mind. Is you're
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: trying to pick the killing spot, um on that day
- 1:22:34Speaker 1: on November eight or whatever it is. So um, I'm
- 1:22:38Speaker 1: just kind of thinking back on a hunt from a
- 1:22:41Speaker 1: few years ago in Iowa, and I had noticed I
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: was hunting the backside of this farm and I was
- 1:22:50Speaker 1: coming and I was I was coming out after a
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: morning hunt, and I noticed that there was some really
- 1:22:58Speaker 1: good sign up along this timber edge and had this
- 1:23:02Speaker 1: whole hillside that was just just covered and just just
- 1:23:06Speaker 1: the nastiest stuff that you could you can imagine. And
- 1:23:11Speaker 1: I remember coming out and I'm like, man, I need
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: I need to set up somewhere in here because it
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: just based off the sign and there was a couple
- 1:23:21Speaker 1: of big scrapes that I could tell that they had
- 1:23:24Speaker 1: just been hit and and just the train features and everything,
- 1:23:28Speaker 1: just the way it laid, it just felt right. You know.
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: It's just sometimes you just gotta, you know, go off
- 1:23:35Speaker 1: of some gut feeling too sometimes. And I don't know
- 1:23:41Speaker 1: why did this, um, but and I didn't have to
- 1:23:46Speaker 1: stand with me. I had to went back up to
- 1:23:48Speaker 1: the truck and get a stand and sticks and then
- 1:23:52Speaker 1: come back and then hunted that evening or whatever. I
- 1:23:55Speaker 1: went and hunted a completely different farm that that evening
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: because I had a stand already hung in there. So
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: I went the lazy route and and we all do
- 1:24:11Speaker 1: this at times, and I was out there. I've been like,
- 1:24:15Speaker 1: I was there for about four or five days, and
- 1:24:18Speaker 1: I think I was getting kind of tired. And I
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: went back after that evening hunt, and I'm like, why
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: didn't you go over there and hang that set? You
- 1:24:29Speaker 1: saw the sign all the sign was there. And I
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: remember sitting and thinking, I'm like, you know, what if
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: the wind, if that wind, If I look at this
- 1:24:36Speaker 1: phone and that wind is coming out of the north
- 1:24:39Speaker 1: for tomorrow mornings, hunt, I got a feeling those bucks
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: are going to cruise that down one side of that
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: of that whole hillside that's just nasty. And there's gotta
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: be a ton of dose in there. And I pulled
- 1:24:51Speaker 1: that phone out. I looked at it and I thought,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: that's it. That's that's what it's doing. And I went
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: over there that morning in the dark, and I hate
- 1:25:03Speaker 1: doing hanging haunts in the dark, um because you just
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: you never know. Once you get up there, you're like, oh,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: this is great, but I can't shoot anywhere. Well that
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: light comes up, It's like, oh boy, what are we
- 1:25:15Speaker 1: gonna have? What's that? It broke up pretty good, I said.
- 1:25:21Speaker 1: When it starts getting light out, you're always kind of
- 1:25:24Speaker 1: crossing your fingers, yeah, because you just you have no clue,
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: um what you're gonna, you know, be dealing with. So
- 1:25:37Speaker 1: I go in there, hand to stand. I see two
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: shooters at morning, I mean two good ones, and I
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: was about eight yards off the mark and we all
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: kind of do this a little bit, and you're like, man,
- 1:25:52Speaker 1: you know now I got to tear this whole thing
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: down again and move it over there. But I just
- 1:25:56Speaker 1: knew it. I had to do it, you know, I
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: just had to do the work. Well that's what I did,
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: and I tore it down, slid it about yards over
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: there because the one because one of the bucks came
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: out of this ditch, and then another one later on
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: headed into that ditch, and I thought, well, I'm going
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: to catch either one of them, you know, one of
- 1:26:21Speaker 1: these two bucks, and I'd shoot either one of them.
- 1:26:24Speaker 1: And so I moved that set, I did the work,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: and the that that evening, it was just a downpour
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: and I couldn't even I couldn't even hunt it if
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: I wanted to. So um, and I left everything in there,
- 1:26:41Speaker 1: like I left my bow and everything in the tree.
- 1:26:43Speaker 1: I'm I'm pretty I'm pretty good about that. And and
- 1:26:49Speaker 1: so I go back in the very next morning and
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: and gets and get in that tree. And it was
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: brain pretty good even that morning when I got up
- 1:27:03Speaker 1: and I go out there, and that deer, one of
- 1:27:08Speaker 1: the deer that came out of the drainage the day before,
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: he came back out of out of the drainage and
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: went up that hillside that morning, and I waited till
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: he got up. I didn't want to call to him.
- 1:27:23Speaker 1: I wanted something to block because I hate I hate
- 1:27:28Speaker 1: calling to a deer. And they just turned around and
- 1:27:29Speaker 1: just like boom, they're right on you. You know, like
- 1:27:31Speaker 1: they've already figured out exactly you know where that is.
- 1:27:36Speaker 1: And there, you know, they bust in a tree. I
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: let him get up the hill a little ways that
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: he got behind a cedar, and I snort wheezed at him,
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: and I saw him stopping and swing his head around
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: and I could just see, I just I could just
- 1:27:47Speaker 1: see his cage turn and he stood there for a second.
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: I knew he was thinking about it. So I waited
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: until he slowly turned his head back the opposite way again,
- 1:27:59Speaker 1: and I had him again um and snort wheeze at him,
- 1:28:02Speaker 1: and he came right down um and gave me like
- 1:28:07Speaker 1: a yard shot and and and it was, you know,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: it was that that scouting and doing the work and
- 1:28:17Speaker 1: and seeing that sign, thinking about what the wind was
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: going to do for that following morning. Um, for two
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: days in a row, it came out the north and
- 1:28:31Speaker 1: blew straight down and those bucks did I mean, they
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: just cruised that that downwards side of that betting narrative
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: area and it just it just played out perfect. So
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: I've got to follow up questions on that one. The
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: day before when you're sitting there hunting and you saw
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: the two bucks do that move eight yards away? What
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: time did you get down to make your move? This
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: is something I always debate internally too. I'm always wondering,
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: you know, what is the exact best window that is
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: the should you just go right away or should you
- 1:29:05Speaker 1: wait till you think the lowest part of the day
- 1:29:08Speaker 1: will be and make your move? When do you if
- 1:29:11Speaker 1: you have like a mid day hanging hunt move that
- 1:29:13Speaker 1: you're gonna make, when's that window you like to do it?
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: I tend to be a little more. I kind of
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: waited out a little bit just to you know, just
- 1:29:25Speaker 1: to make sure kind of thing. But about thirty, um,
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: you know, I'm I'm sliding over there, and and that
- 1:29:34Speaker 1: gives me a little bit of time to to find that,
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: you know, to scout a little bit more. Um, and
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: you know, I already already saw what this deer we're doing.
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: So a lot of times I'll scout up so far
- 1:29:50Speaker 1: and I use I'll use my binocular as a fair
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: amount to scout up ahead of me. So I'm not
- 1:29:58Speaker 1: laying any you know, at any ground sent down up
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: ahead of me where they might cross it. Maybe you know,
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: when I'm you know, at night or whatever it might be. Um,
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: you know, I'll say, okay, I can. I can kind
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: of see that trail over there. That's where they seem
- 1:30:19Speaker 1: to want to be. I don't need to go any
- 1:30:21Speaker 1: farther than this. I'm about twenty or twenty five yards away,
- 1:30:25Speaker 1: I mean, and I put the brakes on and and
- 1:30:29Speaker 1: and get set up. But yeah, about probably ten thirty
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: eleven o'clock and then that way I can have have
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: my have my way with that spot. Yeah. That that
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: seems to be kind of where I've thought that sweet
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: spot is because it's it's late enough that there's not
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: that super early morning movement, but you're not quite into
- 1:30:51Speaker 1: that you know, midday window where those big bucks sometimes
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: getting their feet and start cruising again. Of course it
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: can it can vary, It could be any time, but
- 1:31:00Speaker 1: I kind of feel like that ten to eleven windows
- 1:31:03Speaker 1: a little bit of a possible lull. So I like
- 1:31:06Speaker 1: that too. Um. Now a little more on how you
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: picked that specific tree though, So you moved in there
- 1:31:15Speaker 1: after you saw them. You wanted to be down into
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: that thick bedding area, but closer to that ditch where
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: they came in and out. You're glassing as you work
- 1:31:23Speaker 1: your way over there. How did you end up picking
- 1:31:26Speaker 1: that specific tree to hang up. Um. I'm curious where
- 1:31:30Speaker 1: you paying attention to height or how how you could
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: get into a tree. Did you look for a certain
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: kind of tree? Um? Did you I don't know, anything
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: like that that was running through your mind? Or did
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: you just want to be within shooting range of that
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: ditch trail that was coming in and out and making
- 1:31:45Speaker 1: sure the wind wind blow there. I wanted to be
- 1:31:50Speaker 1: within Uh. You know, it all goes back to hunting
- 1:31:53Speaker 1: the tree, and I wanted to be in the tree
- 1:31:57Speaker 1: that's gonna give me at least a shot opportunity at
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: that that ditch over there, I felt like that ditch
- 1:32:04Speaker 1: was kind of like the key to everything. Well, then
- 1:32:08Speaker 1: I get over there, and Um, the next thing I was,
- 1:32:13Speaker 1: I don't height does not make a difference to me
- 1:32:17Speaker 1: at all. I mean I see guys that will hunt
- 1:32:20Speaker 1: super high and and sometimes that when the higher you get,
- 1:32:26Speaker 1: the smaller you're that that kill zone gets. UM. That
- 1:32:31Speaker 1: particular tree I was probably I don't know, probably twelve ft,
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: but I had the cover, UM, and that was the
- 1:32:41Speaker 1: most important thing to me and and will always be.
- 1:32:46Speaker 1: You know a lot of times, you know Kansas, we
- 1:32:49Speaker 1: go out there and um, we get in those cedar
- 1:32:52Speaker 1: trees sometimes and my god, I'm you know, I'm five
- 1:32:55Speaker 1: six ft off the ground and I'm like bulletproof and
- 1:32:59Speaker 1: nothing or bust me out of those things. Um, I think.
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: And I knew too, because that was kind of in
- 1:33:06Speaker 1: the bottom down there, like even being that low, even
- 1:33:10Speaker 1: if the winds coming back over, but being in the
- 1:33:14Speaker 1: bottom in the morning, I knew when that rise happened
- 1:33:20Speaker 1: in the morning, I knew everything was just gonna get
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: sucked straight up. Um as well, and um it made
- 1:33:27Speaker 1: that It made that spot like literally bulletproof. And it's
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: funny because of knowing about that spot. I returned to
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: that same farm three or four years later whenever I
- 1:33:40Speaker 1: drew another tag and I could not get a north wind,
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: like literally the whole time I was there, I was like,
- 1:33:47Speaker 1: oh my god, I need I want to get back
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: in there. I know that spot is still good. And
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: as soon as I did, I got in that same
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: tree and killed another buck. Wow. Pretty awesome. You find
- 1:33:59Speaker 1: a spot like that. Yeah, it's just one of those
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: spots that It was funny because my buddy that owns
- 1:34:07Speaker 1: that farm, when I first killed that first buck there
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: He's like, where did you shoot that buck at? And
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: I told him He's like, I've never even hunted over
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: there before. And I'm like, really, I'm like, dude, I'm
- 1:34:18Speaker 1: telling you that spots. I'm telling you that's that's the spot.
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: And and then I come back out there a few
- 1:34:28Speaker 1: years later, and I kept telling him. I'm like, man,
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: I want this wind to switch out of the north.
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: I want to get back into that spot again. And
- 1:34:36Speaker 1: he goes, you know, I still have never gone over
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: there and hunted that section. And I'm like, I'm telling
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: you that spot is money. I said, if I can
- 1:34:43Speaker 1: get back in that trede this week, and if I
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: don't have one down already, so I'll kill I'll kill
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: a bucket over there. And by eight o'clock that morning,
- 1:34:53Speaker 1: I texted him I said I said I just smoked one.
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: And he calls me and he says, did you really.
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm telling you this spot is It's just
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: it's bulletproof. And I was on the phone with him
- 1:35:11Speaker 1: and um and and uh. He's like, man, I'm gonna
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: have to go over there and and uh and set
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: this evening and and see if I can't get a
- 1:35:24Speaker 1: crack at one and and so we got my dear
- 1:35:28Speaker 1: out and we came and he came back, and I
- 1:35:31Speaker 1: and jumped up in my stand and and he almost
- 1:35:36Speaker 1: killed another big one that evening. Sometimes those spots are
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: it kind of goes back to the annual trend thing
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: a little bit, like things happen for a reason. I
- 1:35:46Speaker 1: always try to when I see something or I find
- 1:35:50Speaker 1: like a hot spot like that where I see a
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: buck do something, I try to analyze, you know, why
- 1:35:56Speaker 1: it happened, because usually things don't not always, but usually
- 1:35:59Speaker 1: things don't have upen by chance. There's usually a reason
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: why buck moved through a certain area. Um So in
- 1:36:04Speaker 1: that case, maybe it was that cover feature and the
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: terrain features all coming together that you know, year after
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: year bucks are going to use that area. Um Or
- 1:36:11Speaker 1: when you see a one off deer setting at some
- 1:36:14Speaker 1: other point, you think about, like you know, you described
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: like how he was using the wind, to think about
- 1:36:18Speaker 1: why he moved that way or why he did this that.
- 1:36:21Speaker 1: That seems to be another one of those, UM I
- 1:36:24Speaker 1: don't know things that I keep hearing from folks year
- 1:36:27Speaker 1: after year having success. They're always asking why, They're always
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: trying to kind of micro analyze observations or data to
- 1:36:36Speaker 1: kind of again, it's that idea of pick pick the tree,
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: not the zone. It's you know, get the details right,
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: not the not the the fuzzy big picture. Um. It
- 1:36:48Speaker 1: just seems to be the difference. It's you know something
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: you know, something I picked up with with Andre a
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: long time ago was the fact that, I mean, here's
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: a guy that I mean, my guy. The guy's killed
- 1:37:05Speaker 1: like eighteen gross boon of Crockett's, you know, with the
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: bow and his i mean, his living room is ridiculous.
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: You know, it's like, you know, like the kind of
- 1:37:17Speaker 1: kind of bucks and how many bucks this guy has
- 1:37:20Speaker 1: killed over the years. You know. The one thing I've
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: always noticed about him is whenever he's talking to somebody,
- 1:37:26Speaker 1: like you know, just working shows and stuff like that
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: with him, or just you know, you know, us being
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: around just other people and talking, I always see him
- 1:37:35Speaker 1: asking a lot of people questions. And it's funny to
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: me that a guy as successful as as he is,
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: that he's asking anyone questions. But you know, he's always
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: trying to soak it in. I think that's what has
- 1:37:58Speaker 1: been my observation with him times. That's very interesting. That's
- 1:38:02Speaker 1: very interesting. And that's it's it does seem to be
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: one of those things. No matter how successful you are,
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: those very best deer hunters are constantly still trying to learn.
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: They're constantly still trying to find what that next thing is,
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: what's that next edge they can find? Um, it's it's
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: a lifelong process. I guess right, yeah, for sure, What
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: do you think? What do you think you're if you
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: had to identify like the next area that you need
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: to work on, is there any kind of weakness or
- 1:38:37Speaker 1: is there any kind of thing you're really still curious
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: about or that you're still trying to nail down? Um?
- 1:38:44Speaker 1: Does anything jump to your mind when I want to
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: bring that up? Yeah, you know one thing that I
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: would like to be a better rut hunter, if that's possible. Like,
- 1:38:56Speaker 1: I don't I have a tough time with the rut.
- 1:39:00Speaker 1: It's you know, I don't get me wrong. I for
- 1:39:03Speaker 1: sure I've shot some you know, great bucks um in November,
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: but that's a really frustrating time for me because the randomness. Yeah,
- 1:39:16Speaker 1: I mean, just uh of of dear, just I'm like,
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: I'll get into the routine just like everybody, you know,
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: like I'm gonna hunt some downwards side of some some
- 1:39:28Speaker 1: dope betting areas, or maybe I might hunt a pinch
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: here there or whatever. Um, it's just I feel like
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: the rut is just luck half of the time. There's
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: not a lot of skill, um that that goes along
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: with was shooting. You know, those bucks train features are
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: probably the biggest thing I think. Um, but yeah, I
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: would like to definitely, you know, better my skills had,
- 1:40:02Speaker 1: you know, learning how to the hunt the rut more
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: efficiently than than what I do. Well, that's probably a
- 1:40:10Speaker 1: good thing. There's a lot of guys probably that are
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: in the reverse situation where the only time they can
- 1:40:15Speaker 1: kill a good buck is during the rut and they
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: need to try to figure out on the other sides.
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: So it's it's nice to be in the scenario where
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: you can kill bucks pretty consistently in the tougher parts
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: of the season than the other way. UM. One last
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: couple of questions. I've been talking to you're off here
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: for a long time, but I had to like specific
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: tactical questions related to what we were just talking about
- 1:40:38Speaker 1: a second ago. Um, back to the setting up on
- 1:40:42Speaker 1: these hanging hunts. M Um, Number one when you're moving
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: to midday to set up in a new spot and
- 1:40:49Speaker 1: you found that perfect tree, do you do trimming or
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: do you are you're worried about spooking things and you're
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: not gonna trim like. That's something I'm always debating is
- 1:40:57Speaker 1: is how much how many lanes do I open up?
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: Do I do anything? Or do it just quietly get
- 1:41:01Speaker 1: set up and hunt? Um? I guess just answer me
- 1:41:04Speaker 1: that trimming. What's your perspective on that? On these middle
- 1:41:07Speaker 1: of the day hanging hunt type deals, I definitely trim. Um.
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: I prefer not to if I don't have to, that's
- 1:41:17Speaker 1: my you know what I prefer um Sometimes UM in
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: those cases, if it looks like to say, I'm gonna
- 1:41:28Speaker 1: have to trim a lot, then then I that's where
- 1:41:31Speaker 1: I'm definitely gonna try to stay low to minimize that,
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: because the higher you get, the more trimming that you're
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: gonna end up getting into. Um. I. But yes, I've
- 1:41:46Speaker 1: I've got into some trees before where I knew I
- 1:41:50Speaker 1: should have done some trimming and didn't, and it cost
- 1:41:53Speaker 1: me a dear. UM. So I don't do that anymore.
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: If if I need to open up something, I'll little bit,
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: but I don't. I always keep in perspective of my
- 1:42:04Speaker 1: shots are twenty yards, you know, twenty yards and don't
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: try to Um. I see guys get a little nutty
- 1:42:15Speaker 1: with with the triman and um ends up costing a
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: deer because you know they crack him beforehand. Because um,
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: you know, I grew up a big coon hunter, um
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: you know, and and was way into that when I
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: was a kid, and a good coon dog will drift
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: a track from a distance. And so if if a
- 1:42:41Speaker 1: dog can do that, a deer definitely can do that
- 1:42:43Speaker 1: as well. So UM, I want him the least make
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: it to that location before um, before that that scent
- 1:42:56Speaker 1: that drifted in their direction froze him up. So you
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: don't want to be walking all over the place opening
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: up fifteen different shooting lanes. No, no, maybe one two. Yeah,
- 1:43:08Speaker 1: there's a there's the window types of trimmers like that,
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: and then there's the uh the air the runway strips.
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: Some guys like those two. UM I tend to be
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: more along your lines. UM. Okay, one more question on
- 1:43:22Speaker 1: that line of thinking, which is you do a lot
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: of the hanging hunting. Your running with a lot of
- 1:43:27Speaker 1: folks that do that kind of stuff too. Uh. Do
- 1:43:30Speaker 1: you have a pro tip or two as far as
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: the actual setup of sticks and your stand that have
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: helped you do it more quietly or quicker or more efficiently.
- 1:43:40Speaker 1: Are there any little systems you put in place over
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: the years that made you good at that? UM? You
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: know I've been I ran the you know, the lone
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: Wolf standard sticks for years, and ran the XOP standing
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: sticks as well. UM, you know all the quist of
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: the line stands, but now you know I'm running all
- 1:44:03Speaker 1: the long Wolf Custom Gear standard sticks. It's to me,
- 1:44:07Speaker 1: it's the most thought out UM system that is on
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: the market. And I'm not just saying that because you know,
- 1:44:16Speaker 1: I'm affiliated with those guys, but I do believe it's
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: it's the lightest, it's the um the way it stacks. UM.
- 1:44:27Speaker 1: Like this year, I'm gonna run you know the one
- 1:44:30Speaker 1: the low Wolf Custom Gear one point oh with the
- 1:44:33Speaker 1: mini sticks with the eight ers. I think the whole
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: thing is like ten or twelve pounds. I mean it's
- 1:44:38Speaker 1: next to nothing. UM. The you know, the lighter, the better. Uh.
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: Something that UM Actually Honora showed me instead of running
- 1:44:49Speaker 1: the straps all around the stands like we used to
- 1:44:52Speaker 1: do and all that kind of stuff. I put just
- 1:44:55Speaker 1: a little bag on the bottom of my seat that
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: hangs down on and I throw all my all my
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: straps in there so they're not just all over the
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: place and you're wrap. I'm not doing that anymore. That's
- 1:45:07Speaker 1: just a mess. Interesting. Now, what about your getting up
- 1:45:11Speaker 1: in the tree process with the sticks? How do you
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: how do you run that? Do you have them hanging
- 1:45:16Speaker 1: off of you as you climb up in the tree
- 1:45:18Speaker 1: or do you pull them up on a rope? Uh?
- 1:45:20Speaker 1: What's that look like for you? Um? I always put
- 1:45:24Speaker 1: the stand on my back and then first stick on
- 1:45:30Speaker 1: and then um. Typically, Uh, the way I've always done
- 1:45:35Speaker 1: it in the past is I just take the other
- 1:45:37Speaker 1: three sticks or two sticks, or however many sticks, and
- 1:45:41Speaker 1: I'm I'm gonna run moving forward from that ground ground
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: stick and UM. I just always hang them on a branch.
- 1:45:48Speaker 1: And I always have my stuff. Um, you know, I
- 1:45:52Speaker 1: already have my um my, my bag. My bag is
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: usually attached to my stand, and once I get up,
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: I take, you know, take a screw in, throw my
- 1:46:05Speaker 1: bag on there and then pull my stand off and
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: then hang it and then my bows already tied to
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: the string that is is um on my stand and
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: then that way I don't have to come up and
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: down the tree. Um. I try to minimize that as
- 1:46:23Speaker 1: much as possible. Yeah, that seems to be the way
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: to do it, all right. Justin I am sufficiently fired
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: up for for some white tails. What I really want
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: to do right now is go drive some fields and
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: scott for bucks. But I think I have to go
- 1:46:38Speaker 1: in and feed my kids instead, So I guess that's
- 1:46:43Speaker 1: comes back to the efficiency thing, to figure out a
- 1:46:45Speaker 1: way to be able to do both. But I might
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: What I might do is act like I'm still doing
- 1:46:50Speaker 1: this podcast with you, and maybe do some of that
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: driving around and say, oh, it just ran over a
- 1:46:58Speaker 1: little bit. It's a pretty good smart You've got to
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: figure it out, all right. So one and a half
- 1:47:06Speaker 1: sort of questions, and then we're gonna close this down
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: really quick. Last question I asked. I'm starting to ask
- 1:47:11Speaker 1: more and more people this every time. If you had
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: a billboard on the side of the highway that all
- 1:47:18Speaker 1: these deer hunters are gonna drive by every day, and
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: you wanted to to just leave one lasting message with
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: all these guys and girls, what would you put on
- 1:47:26Speaker 1: that billboard. Um, sometimes you have to get uncomfortable. I
- 1:47:38Speaker 1: like it. That's a good take home from those those stories.
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: That's been a theme for sure. All right, that's a
- 1:47:44Speaker 1: good billboard. Get uncomfortable, get outside your comfort zone sometimes
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: go for the fences. Last question, justin. If people want
- 1:47:53Speaker 1: to see your episodes of White Tell Addictions or follow
- 1:47:57Speaker 1: along with anything that's going on from the show or
- 1:47:59Speaker 1: loan Will Custom Gear or anything like that, where can
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: they see your stuff and all that other stuff too? Um,
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: you can go to uh the Lone Wolf Custom Gear
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: YouTube page. That's where um, you'll find all the White
- 1:48:13Speaker 1: Tail Addictions episodes and um and a lot of the
- 1:48:17Speaker 1: old the old episodes that are on there as well.
- 1:48:21Speaker 1: Or go to www Dot Lone Wolf custom Gear dot com. Um,
- 1:48:26Speaker 1: that's our website. That's where all of our gears um.
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: Or you know you can follow me on Instagram, um
- 1:48:37Speaker 1: at uh I'm actually it's not justin Hollinsworth's Mason's Dad
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: get your straight yeah, and or Facebook or or whatever. Um.
- 1:48:50Speaker 1: Uh that's where you'll you'll find all of our stuff
- 1:48:53Speaker 1: at very cool all right, justin, I I've enjoyed this.
- 1:48:56Speaker 1: Thank you so much for taking so much time to
- 1:48:58Speaker 1: h talk Bucks. I really appreciate you having me on.
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: This was fun. I love it. Let's let's stay in
- 1:49:05Speaker 1: touch and exchange some pictures this fall with a couple
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: of dead bucks. Huh for sure, I love it. That's
- 1:49:10Speaker 1: the best part about this. I agree. All right, well
- 1:49:13Speaker 1: talked against him justin Thank you. Thanks all right, thanks
- 1:49:18Speaker 1: for tuning in for this one. I hope you enjoyed
- 1:49:20Speaker 1: that as much as I did. Uh. I'm raring to go.
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: It's summer, velvet Bucks are out there in the fields.
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: Fall is going to be here before we know what,
- 1:49:30Speaker 1: my friends, So get outside of your comfort zone, start
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: doing something different, start working harder, working different. Break the
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: routine now and then prepared to do so again in
- 1:49:40Speaker 1: the fall. Until next time, Thank you again. I appreciate everything,
- 1:49:45Speaker 1: your support, your time, your interests, your ratings, your reviews,
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: your comments, your questions. Um it means the world. So
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: until next time, thanks and stay wired to hunt.
