- 1:32Speaker 2: at SIMPNS in College and I'm really excited to head
- 1:34Speaker 2: over next week Stage tum Or some content from the trope.
- 1:38Speaker 2: So excited to see the players, the staff, and just
- 1:42Speaker 2: to really get back into it again and just to
- 1:44Speaker 2: get over there. It's going to be fantastic. If you're
- 1:47Speaker 2: listening to this on Sunday, the twenty seventh, we're going
- 1:50Speaker 2: out on All Ireland Football Final day. Maybe you're driving
- 1:53Speaker 2: down from dunny Gall, maybe you're driving up from Carey
- 1:56Speaker 2: to Croke Park. And it's funny because ever since the
- 1:59Speaker 2: Staters end the market officially in Ireland back two or
- 2:02Speaker 2: three years ago, we've always sort of looked back on
- 2:04Speaker 2: this date and ironically this year, July the twenty seventh,
- 2:07Speaker 2: it coincides with the anniversary of the nineteen ninety seven
- 2:10Speaker 2: NFL American Bowl preseason game, which took place between the
- 2:15Speaker 2: Pittsburgh Staters and the Chicago Bears at the iconic Croke Park.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So it's just really fitting that on the biggest day
- 2:22Speaker 2: of the year in Croke Park for the GBA, that
- 2:25Speaker 2: we have, you know, the alaboratary of what really for
- 2:29Speaker 2: NFL fans in Ireland is such a momentous moment and
- 2:32Speaker 2: it's an honor this week to have one of the
- 2:35Speaker 2: guys that was on the field just walking out, running
- 2:39Speaker 2: out with the team, the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh
- 2:42Speaker 2: Staters in nineteen ninety seven, who was Cordell Stewart Slash
- 2:46Speaker 2: as we all know him. So, folks, whop you enjoy
- 2:49Speaker 2: the interview with Slash. He doesn't just talk about the
- 2:51Speaker 2: game of ninety seven, but he also talks around just
- 2:54Speaker 2: his thoughts for the season as well. On this week's
- 2:57Speaker 2: edition of the Irish Theaters podcast presented by Ironings, as
- 3:06Speaker 2: we celebrate the anniversary of the Pittsburgh Staiers last game
- 3:10Speaker 2: in Dublin, in nineteen ninety seven. This weekend, it's no
- 3:13Speaker 2: better than to have the guy that was under center slashed.
- 3:17Speaker 2: On the Irish Theaters podcast Cordella's Stewart Man, it is
- 3:20Speaker 2: good to talk to you again. How are you doing?
- 3:22Speaker 3: You good? I'm doll good. I'm out here on driving range.
- 3:25Speaker 4: As you can see, I'm I'm sweating as if I
- 3:27Speaker 4: was at summer camp or something like that.
- 3:28Speaker 3: Right, but I'm real good. Can't complain, brother, Just getting
- 3:32Speaker 3: now the house, taking it easy, getting some golf balls
- 3:34Speaker 3: and having a chance to talk about a moment in
- 3:37Speaker 3: time that was seemed like it was a long time ago,
- 3:39Speaker 3: but it wasn't really wasn't that far away.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Let's go back to just a call of well about
- 3:45Speaker 2: a year and a half ago, and now you're the
- 3:47Speaker 2: chance to come over to Dublin again and see the stadium,
- 3:50Speaker 2: and you know, a lot has changed since that. Obviously
- 3:53Speaker 2: the game has now been announced for you as somebody
- 3:56Speaker 2: that obviously played in that previous game. How cool is
- 3:59Speaker 2: that to see the game hopping and night and obviously
- 4:01Speaker 2: playing Minnesota as well.
- 4:03Speaker 4: I think it's awesome. Actually, I just from what I
- 4:05Speaker 4: can remember from coming back last time a year or
- 4:09Speaker 4: so ago. The stadium has been filled in a little bit.
- 4:12Speaker 4: There's been some development around the stadium far as more
- 4:16Speaker 4: bodies of being being able to put in be put
- 4:19Speaker 4: into the stadium. It wasn't as closed off as it
- 4:22Speaker 4: is now. It's a little bit more open, I think.
- 4:25Speaker 4: I think on both fans it was open, I think
- 4:27Speaker 4: if I remember correctly. But uh, they've done a great
- 4:30Speaker 4: job of keeping the sports relevant there, considering the great
- 4:34Speaker 4: things for sports are concerned this team, what's the real
- 4:37Speaker 4: what's the game you guys have there on Villan?
- 4:39Speaker 3: What is the main sport for you? Is rugby? What
- 4:41Speaker 3: is it?
- 4:43Speaker 2: I'm glad you mentioned that. So yes, rugby's popular, but
- 4:45Speaker 2: we've got Gaelic football and hurling, which is ironically the
- 4:48Speaker 2: final is taking place on Sunday the twenty seventh, which
- 4:52Speaker 2: is to see them did as you guys stewed it
- 4:54Speaker 2: up and went in the field. So yeah, will be
- 4:57Speaker 2: in the cride in September.
- 4:59Speaker 4: That's a so we you know, considering the changes, uh,
- 5:03Speaker 4: from identifying when you guys were accustomed to far us
- 5:05Speaker 4: your sport is concerned and what we have in the US,
- 5:08Speaker 4: and of course the Rooney family having a connection with
- 5:11Speaker 4: the community there. It was, it was, it was, it
- 5:15Speaker 4: was fitting, if you will, having a chance to win
- 5:18Speaker 4: the Crystal Ball the football itself to you know, that's
- 5:21Speaker 4: where what is it Waterford Crystal is is originated right
- 5:26Speaker 4: there out of Ireland. And to be able to get
- 5:28Speaker 4: that trophy for the first time for the Rooney family
- 5:30Speaker 4: and for the Steels organization and bring it back to Pittsburgh,
- 5:33Speaker 4: it was fitting within itself. But that was my first
- 5:35Speaker 4: opportunity to start in the National Football League, being proclaimed
- 5:40Speaker 4: as the starter and end up having a great run
- 5:43Speaker 4: with players like the Lebron Kirklands.
- 5:45Speaker 3: And the Greg Lloyd's and Jerome Bettisons and uh the.
- 5:51Speaker 4: Cornell Lakes Rain Lloyd's if I mentioned both of them,
- 5:53Speaker 4: the Money Dawphins, you know, players like that. So it
- 5:56Speaker 4: was the Lake Charles Johnson who was with me at
- 5:59Speaker 4: the university called Joe Steed, who was a nose guard
- 6:02Speaker 4: that was with me at the University of Colorado.
- 6:05Speaker 3: So it was Tim Lester, late Tim Lester. It was
- 6:07Speaker 3: a fullback for Jerome.
- 6:09Speaker 4: So we we really had a great run and uh,
- 6:12Speaker 4: from what I remember, it was it was a great time.
- 6:14Speaker 4: Went to the hospital there out to see the kids
- 6:18Speaker 4: had a chance to playing golf with Mike Tomzak and
- 6:21Speaker 4: Coach Coward and all that fun stuff right off the
- 6:23Speaker 4: water with the lighthouse right there, and you know, it
- 6:26Speaker 4: was just it was just a wonderful time for a
- 6:30Speaker 4: little young cup coming out of college, having a chance
- 6:32Speaker 4: to be on the road and travel abroad just to play.
- 6:34Speaker 3: The child is in fun Dame of golf.
- 6:38Speaker 2: It was very different to what the preseason is not
- 6:40Speaker 2: in the sense because you guys, I think had a
- 6:42Speaker 2: sort of a joint camp of the Bears a lot
- 6:44Speaker 2: of that week. What was that like as well? Like
- 6:46Speaker 2: it was almost like a little training camp in that sense.
- 6:49Speaker 4: It was it was we had a chance to to
- 6:53Speaker 4: practice against I think was the Bears against the Bears, Yeah,
- 6:56Speaker 4: and I think at wanted the schools if I can
- 6:58Speaker 4: remember correctly, But you know, it was it was a
- 7:02Speaker 4: it was a typical day have worked for us as Steelers.
- 7:04Speaker 4: You know, we were We're an organization that there that
- 7:08Speaker 4: strived on the standard and strived on being able to
- 7:12Speaker 4: do things a certain type of a way. So regardless
- 7:14Speaker 4: of who we practice against, it rather it's ourselves against
- 7:16Speaker 4: someone else. Preseason, regular season, postseason. It was always the
- 7:22Speaker 4: same because we had to do things a certain way,
- 7:24Speaker 4: and uh, ding it a certain way allows you to
- 7:27Speaker 4: get to brief the benefits uh for being steady and
- 7:30Speaker 4: efficient with how you work.
- 7:31Speaker 3: So it didn't matter where we was.
- 7:33Speaker 4: Honestly, Uh, we were gonna get it done, and uh
- 7:36Speaker 4: we ended up having a chance to do. But it
- 7:38Speaker 4: kind of had a camp field, so to speak. To
- 7:40Speaker 4: answer your question, because I think we were just we
- 7:42Speaker 4: were still in camp at the time. If I remember,
- 7:44Speaker 4: right at first preseason game, it's always around, it's it's
- 7:49Speaker 4: during camp. So it was kind of still in camp
- 7:52Speaker 4: modes a bit, and uh, it was business as usual.
- 7:57Speaker 2: Look, and just sort of flash forward to when you
- 8:00Speaker 2: came back. Were you surprised at just how much has
- 8:03Speaker 2: grown since in terms of the game everything else, like
- 8:06Speaker 2: the fact that the game has sold out that that
- 8:08Speaker 2: was not the case in the nineties. It's completely changed.
- 8:11Speaker 4: Yeah, it's it's well, here's the thing is, is the
- 8:14Speaker 4: fan base there are in tune to the game of football. Okay,
- 8:19Speaker 4: it's not like it's something that came from another world. Truthfully,
- 8:24Speaker 4: I think the origin of this of this organization family
- 8:28Speaker 4: was right there in that part of the country in Ireland.
- 8:31Speaker 3: So the connection.
- 8:34Speaker 4: To the Pittsburgh Steelers was very big even before we
- 8:37Speaker 4: had a chance to come to Ireland. But to see
- 8:39Speaker 4: it the way it was far as the fan base,
- 8:41Speaker 4: the recognition, the excitement, the anticipation, it was all there.
- 8:46Speaker 3: You know.
- 8:47Speaker 4: I'm sure once the Stillers get there and feel like
- 8:50Speaker 4: a home game, I'm sure playing against Minnesota, you know
- 8:55Speaker 4: that's it's any team we played in the National Football
- 8:57Speaker 4: League is always a great game. But it's really about
- 9:00Speaker 4: out And then I'm about to say us, as if
- 9:02Speaker 4: I'm still playing, still about us, right, we go to
- 9:05Speaker 4: take care business represent the way we know how, get
- 9:08Speaker 4: a chance to bring the trophy home and go from here.
- 9:12Speaker 2: And it's funny you said, like, look, i know you're
- 9:15Speaker 2: not part of the roster anymore, but come the end,
- 9:17Speaker 2: come the end of September, there's only been two guys
- 9:20Speaker 2: under center starting in these games and the South and
- 9:22Speaker 2: then potentially we'll see what happens Aaron Rodgers, And do
- 9:26Speaker 2: you still keep up with it religiously to the point
- 9:28Speaker 2: where you're seeing the Steers right now? In terms of
- 9:30Speaker 2: obviously Aran Rodgers coming in, We've seen this weekend so
- 9:33Speaker 2: many people going to the Trope. It seems like a
- 9:35Speaker 2: very exciting time for the team on at the minute.
- 9:37Speaker 3: There it is.
- 9:38Speaker 4: It's that time of the season. And then to have
- 9:40Speaker 4: someone like Aaron Rodgers, who was a future Hall of
- 9:42Speaker 4: Famer filling that void that we had trying to find
- 9:47Speaker 4: out who would be the next guy up waited pretty
- 9:50Speaker 4: much the entire offseason, let alone the summer, especially this summer,
- 9:53Speaker 4: not north of Syvey is going to retire if it
- 9:55Speaker 4: was going to come back and play, and obviously coming
- 9:58Speaker 4: back to play, it's really good for the organization, a
- 10:02Speaker 4: sense of stability at that position. You have to take
- 10:04Speaker 4: its veteran leadership into context, if you will, to say
- 10:09Speaker 4: that there's a chances this team can truly compete without
- 10:11Speaker 4: that division, because if you think about it, with Lamar
- 10:14Speaker 4: and Joe Burrow and not known for sure what's going
- 10:18Speaker 4: to take place in Cleveland, it gives us a fighting
- 10:22Speaker 4: chance to have, you know, to do something really really good,
- 10:26Speaker 4: and you can't do not a way to be excited.
- 10:28Speaker 4: The additions we have in the secondary to wide receiver.
- 10:31Speaker 4: I mean, there's so many names that I can't remember
- 10:33Speaker 4: right now to say, but I remember the faces and
- 10:36Speaker 4: if you said them, I'll say, yeah, you're right, I
- 10:37Speaker 4: got you, uh can of dea. But you know, we
- 10:40Speaker 4: we've we've we've we've really put ourselves in a position
- 10:44Speaker 4: to succeed and coach Mike Tomlin and the admin part
- 10:47Speaker 4: of the of the organization administration side, if I have done
- 10:51Speaker 4: a really good job of trying to implement a standard
- 10:55Speaker 4: that's not hasty and decision making, but very diligent in
- 10:59Speaker 4: their decision making.
- 11:01Speaker 2: The spot on I've got two very quick ones to
- 11:03Speaker 2: finish off. I know you're about to get in the
- 11:05Speaker 2: golf course.
- 11:05Speaker 3: Again.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Just for people listening to this, it's one thing like, look,
- 11:09Speaker 2: we can talk about nine seven, we can talk about
- 11:11Speaker 2: your time in the league, but just Janity, what was
- 11:13Speaker 2: it like to run on the field that previously heinz field,
- 11:16Speaker 2: not in Iika sure as that starting quarterback under center.
- 11:19Speaker 2: I'm just having that, you know in your head when
- 11:21Speaker 2: you run on What was the sort of the memories
- 11:23Speaker 2: that I like for you?
- 11:25Speaker 4: Well, you know, again, that was one of another first
- 11:28Speaker 4: time moments for myself and I think all of the
- 11:31Speaker 4: organization and players on that team in two thousand and one,
- 11:34Speaker 4: that was our first time getting on the field and
- 11:37Speaker 4: having a chance to score the first touchdown in there
- 11:39Speaker 4: and being the first quarterback to start there in that stadium.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Wanted to make it as memorable as possible. I thought
- 11:47Speaker 4: we did. We came up short playing against New England
- 11:50Speaker 4: and that AFC championship games.
- 11:52Speaker 3: You know, wish we all could have them back, but you.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Got to keep it where it is. Is just allow of
- 11:57Speaker 4: stories to be told the right way. And I thought
- 11:59Speaker 4: that year going thirteen and three, and you asked about me,
- 12:02Speaker 4: I don't. I don't like to do it too too often,
- 12:04Speaker 4: but I'll do it now because he gave me infermission,
- 12:06Speaker 4: so to speak, becoming the MVP of the team that year,
- 12:10Speaker 4: most viva player in the conference, you know, Pro Bowl,
- 12:13Speaker 4: making it to the AFC Championship game, which is which
- 12:16Speaker 4: is not enough. But you know, as you get older,
- 12:18Speaker 4: you start appreciating those moments, and those were moments in
- 12:21Speaker 4: that season, playing with the Jason Gildens and the Joey
- 12:24Speaker 4: Porters and all those guys is James Ferrier and Chris Fu,
- 12:28Speaker 4: Matu mal Falla brother food AMers their Way and Bobby Shaw,
- 12:31Speaker 4: all those dudes man and the offensive line, the cast
- 12:34Speaker 4: of players up front.
- 12:36Speaker 3: It was. It was remarkable to say the least.
- 12:39Speaker 4: And to see that now that the stadium Macrosure Stadium,
- 12:43Speaker 4: it's what over twenty years old. You know that time
- 12:46Speaker 4: has flown by to where you have to assume there's
- 12:49Speaker 4: gonna be some renovations in the new stadium on the horizon,
- 12:51Speaker 4: probably within the next fifteen twenty years. You never know,
- 12:54Speaker 4: because when it comes down to the evolution of science
- 12:57Speaker 4: and let alone dot com or what is it the
- 13:02Speaker 4: computer era, if you will, it's you gotta evolve. And
- 13:06Speaker 4: that was once a brand new stadium now is one
- 13:09Speaker 4: of the stadiums of all the National Football League that
- 13:12Speaker 4: everyone loves to have an opportunity to playing, just as
- 13:14Speaker 4: he did once before when it came down the three rivers.
- 13:19Speaker 2: Just finally, month, just finally. What was it like? You know,
- 13:21Speaker 2: if you had the sum up it in a sentence,
- 13:23Speaker 2: what coach Carr was like for you, how would you
- 13:26Speaker 2: describe him?
- 13:27Speaker 4: Cox Karra was a special man with how he he
- 13:31Speaker 4: was able to get the guy's attention.
- 13:34Speaker 3: He did regardless, you know, whatever he needed to do
- 13:38Speaker 3: to win.
- 13:38Speaker 4: He didn't care to be honest with you, and he
- 13:42Speaker 4: wasn't concerned about nothing else but getting w's in that city.
- 13:44Speaker 4: I think cos kyro is from Pittsburgh, so you know
- 13:47Speaker 4: the pressure that he was under making sure that he
- 13:49Speaker 4: did it the right way and a sense of winning
- 13:51Speaker 4: and not anything else, and he ended up getting him.
- 13:53Speaker 3: I wanted to give him an opportunity to get a
- 13:55Speaker 3: Super Bowl.
- 13:56Speaker 4: We came close a couple of times with me at
- 13:58Speaker 4: starting quarterback and another time as a rookie playe slash
- 14:01Speaker 4: in nineteen ninety five against Dallas and came up short.
- 14:05Speaker 3: But he ended up getting in one. I think in four.
- 14:07Speaker 4: I think it was and rightfully so deserving of one,
- 14:11Speaker 4: and playing for him was a blast.
- 14:13Speaker 3: He gave me my would giving me a chance I
- 14:15Speaker 3: had to.
- 14:16Speaker 4: Earn it and keep it, and the chance to be
- 14:18Speaker 4: slash in the midst of it all something that no
- 14:21Speaker 4: one at that time, and the body of working, the
- 14:24Speaker 4: amount of it, the volume of it, no one's ever
- 14:26Speaker 4: seen that before.
- 14:27Speaker 3: We did it right there in Pittsburgh.
- 14:28Speaker 4: And look at the game today, right because of that
- 14:32Speaker 4: chance and taking advantage of it, the games today looked
- 14:36Speaker 4: just like what it once.
- 14:38Speaker 3: Did with me at the starring quarterback.
- 14:39Speaker 4: So I like to say some of the the excitement
- 14:43Speaker 4: and some of that fiber of today's game, especially at
- 14:47Speaker 4: that position with it was Car giving me that opportunity.
- 14:51Speaker 4: And you say, as a former player of the game,
- 14:53Speaker 4: I'm proud to see it and know that their work
- 14:55Speaker 4: was not done in vain, and and that's consumed to
- 15:00Speaker 4: continue to see it do it and continue to see
- 15:02Speaker 4: it be done. But because Carl was, he was very
- 15:04Speaker 4: good for us, and he knew how to press the
- 15:06Speaker 4: buttons and knew how to take his finger off of us.
- 15:08Speaker 4: So I think that's why he was so successful as
- 15:10Speaker 4: a head coach for the Pittsburgh Still.
- 15:13Speaker 2: Well, look Forrredal. You're talking about moments. I know myself
- 15:15Speaker 2: and a lot of people here will not only remember
- 15:17Speaker 2: ninety seven, but I remember the time he took a
- 15:19Speaker 2: couple of years ago to come into the stadium and
- 15:21Speaker 2: talk to people, because that really was the start of.
- 15:23Speaker 3: A new era.
- 15:24Speaker 2: And we've seen what's happened since. So thank you very
- 15:27Speaker 2: much for what you've done. And who knows, Mida will
- 15:29Speaker 2: see in Dublin at some point, but thank you very
- 15:31Speaker 2: much for coming on here. I will trot decent.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Yeah, man, I'll tell you what last time I was there.
- 15:35Speaker 4: When we came, I had a chance to get a
- 15:36Speaker 4: Guinness glass of Guinness, and it was the best I've
- 15:42Speaker 4: ever tasted, and I'm looking forward to taste it some
- 15:44Speaker 4: morning when I come back. A great time, and you
- 15:46Speaker 4: guys take care of talk to you guys.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Irish airline air Lingus will proudly serve as the presenting

- 16:12Speaker 1: North America continues in twenty twenty five as the airline
