- 0:03[SPEAKER_00]: Hello, hello and welcome to another edition of the Ninernoy's podcast, part of the fan-sided podcast network.
- 0:09[SPEAKER_00]: My name is Robert Morrison, a contributor at Ninernoy's.com.
- 0:12[SPEAKER_00]: And here with me is we are in the throes of training camp.
- 0:16[SPEAKER_00]: Is fellow contributor, Oksha's divadula, Oksha's, how are we doing?
- 0:22[SPEAKER_02]: I'm good, Robert.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's super exciting that football's back was not expecting that like to sort of feel
- 0:31[SPEAKER_02]: As excited as I did really just early in training camp, but that's just goes to tell you how much I've been missing football.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, just all sorts of good little sad.
- 0:41[SPEAKER_02]: Well, a little all over the place because training camp here all sorts of different stuff.
- 0:46[SPEAKER_02]: And I don't know if I'm like excited for this season or terrified or somewhere in between.
- 0:51[SPEAKER_02]: Good overall.
- 0:52[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's kind of where I am, too.
- 0:54[SPEAKER_00]: It's like, yeah, I'm trying to get up and start it.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: And then like every day, it's just like roster moves on top of roster moves, which I don't know.
- 1:02[SPEAKER_00]: I understand mentally and logically at this point that most of these guys are there.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: that they're moving off and on the roster are camp bodies guys that they just literally need in the building for the next, you know, month or so.
- 1:19[SPEAKER_00]: So they can get through preseason and through training camp.
- 1:22[SPEAKER_00]: And then most of them are not going to make any dent on the on the season.
- 1:25[SPEAKER_00]: But it's still a little bit disheartening to be like, oh, they made another move.
- 1:30[SPEAKER_00]: Well, they released this guy.
- 1:31[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, that guy's gone.
- 1:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's just, it's wild to me like how many moves.
- 1:37[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm sure other fan base just feels the same way, but it feels like it's happening a lot right now.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, definitely definitely I'd say like Some of the injuries too.
- 1:47[SPEAKER_02]: It's really like disappointing like oh my gosh like Why is everyone getting hurt and then you see the timeline it's like it's not actually going to affect the season right yeah It doesn't like it doesn't make you feel any better than it's happening
- 2:02[SPEAKER_00]: Right it's it's it's really I mean we had this conversation when they when they reported to camp and it's like oh all these guys are in the public or you know are all these on these guys are on the NFL list or whatever and then most of them are already back.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: I think I'm pretty much pretty sure all of them except for Brandon I give.
- 2:21[SPEAKER_00]: have returned in some form I think more or less it's just like it's easy to get caught up and be like oh no an injury and but then you're also then you also think while the first game is not till September like I know that's like a month away but
- 2:36[SPEAKER_00]: It's still like where they got time and these these these smaller injuries.
- 2:42[SPEAKER_00]: But you know, there are some notable ones that stand out for sure.
- 2:45[SPEAKER_00]: John Jennings still dealing a dealing again.
- 2:49[SPEAKER_00]: I guess is the the appropriate thing with a calf injury.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: I think he had that going on during OTAs.
- 2:57[SPEAKER_00]: It has come back in throughout through training camp and is not allowed him to be a major contributor actually contributor at all during training camp.
- 3:07[SPEAKER_00]: Certainly something to keep an eye on.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: Of course, people are making a big deal like, oh, well, well, he's his version of the Holdin.
- 3:16[SPEAKER_00]: He's got a calf injury, quote unquote.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know.
- 3:19[SPEAKER_00]: I don't feel like it's that.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: With the Ioq thing last year with that Holdin, he was hurt, but also doing stuff on the side.
- 3:27[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know that we've seen any of that from John Jennings, but he's certainly the name that pops out
- 3:32[SPEAKER_00]: to me for sure.
- 3:34[SPEAKER_00]: There was short term things like Michael Williams, Mr. Practice with an ankle injury.
- 3:40[SPEAKER_00]: He seems to be fine to go.
- 3:43[SPEAKER_00]: Renardo Green has got a little nagging.
- 3:47[SPEAKER_00]: So there's a lot of little nagging injuries from the most part, but it's still not great to see the list pile up.
- 3:54[SPEAKER_02]: Definitely.
- 3:55[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, they got to the point where I think I saw a report that they sort of cut down on
- 4:02[SPEAKER_02]: the length and duration of the joint practices.
- 4:05[SPEAKER_02]: They're going to have the Broncos, right?
- 4:07[SPEAKER_02]: Because they were like, we don't have enough bodies, which doesn't mean that like the guys who the important guys are gone.
- 4:15[SPEAKER_02]: It just means that like they don't have enough people to fill in the roster to practice, which for some reason I feel like it's not the first time I've heard this be true for the forty-nine years.
- 4:27[SPEAKER_02]: I want to say it happened last year or two years ago.
- 4:32[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what the, I don't know what that says about this team, but.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 4:36[SPEAKER_00]: And it's possible as I, as I said, that other teams are also going through very similar things and we're just not plugged in with other teams as well as we are with what the foreign owners are doing.
- 4:47[SPEAKER_00]: And so that probably is a little bit of it.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: I would imagine.
- 4:49[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, it's not, it's not good.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: Equinemious St.
- 4:54[SPEAKER_00]: Brown has been on the team twice already, which is.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: Just really weird.
- 4:59[SPEAKER_00]: The strangest one I don't know if you saw this today today.
- 5:01[SPEAKER_00]: So they think they'd just today was when they brought Ekron to me and Saint Brown back for the second time because Andy Isabella was released to they signed last week.
- 5:12[SPEAKER_00]: I believe he
- 5:14[SPEAKER_00]: he went out for one play right for during practice and hurt himself, but they actually designated as like he didn't disclose an in a previous injury so the indication was or at least the way that they're they're presenting it is he was hurt coming in and didn't tell anybody which is really like a bizarre thing to do really bizarre because you think that like a team would cash that eventually I like I just don't understand sort of I don't know like
- 5:44[SPEAKER_02]: I never really understand how teams approach approach these things and like what all of these definitions mean.
- 5:50[SPEAKER_02]: It certainly doesn't look, doesn't like read up like on the headline as like a very positive thing for names of Bella.
- 5:57[SPEAKER_00]: No.
- 5:59[SPEAKER_00]: But yeah, it's not, it's not great.
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: But it certainly is something to keep an eye on there.
- 6:07[SPEAKER_00]: Any other injury-related things that we've that I've neglected to mention, there's just so many of them that I'm just kind of like, okay, boy.
- 6:15[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I think that like there's some talk that like Nick Bosa might be dealing with something, even though they're not really reporting something.
- 6:23[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know, it just seems like a lot of players aren't practicing as much as he'd want.
- 6:27[SPEAKER_02]: And that's not great.
- 6:29[SPEAKER_02]: So yeah, who knows?
- 6:31[SPEAKER_02]: Who knows?
- 6:32[SPEAKER_02]: I hopefully in like a month from now will be like, oh, remember when all they had all those entries mean either.
- 6:42[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, like Grant Cone was trying to to drum up the Fortnite under the line.
- 6:47[SPEAKER_00]: Nick Boses actually hurt.
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: Bandwagon.
- 6:52[SPEAKER_00]: He's really good at that, I guess.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: That certainly, again, if it's a small nagging thing, fine, just leave them out.
- 6:59[SPEAKER_00]: Like, frankly, for those guys who are not fighting for a roster spot, not fighting for a role in the team, those guys who are, like, star players,
- 7:11[SPEAKER_00]: They're in the building.
- 7:13[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like everything's going to be okay.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: As long as it's not a major injury and I'm not terribly concerned.
- 7:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I would rather them be working on on the side and just kind of keep in fresh as opposed to going out there and trying to be like, oh, I got to work through this thing.
- 7:30[SPEAKER_00]: Like that's not ideally there.
- 7:32[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 7:33[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I agree.
- 7:34[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's just it's less important.
- 7:36[SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's important that they, um,
- 7:40[SPEAKER_02]: that they sort of like get into, but the benefit, they're not like, like you said, they're not earning a lot of spots.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_02]: So you really just want to make sure that they make it to week one healthy.
- 7:50[SPEAKER_02]: That's what matters most of all, because I healthy version of like Nick Bosa is better than like a tuned up version of whoever's next up on the depth chart.
- 8:02[SPEAKER_02]: Like even if Bosa's not offering at a hundred percent, I start the season.
- 8:07[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 8:08[SPEAKER_00]: one hundred percent.
- 8:09[SPEAKER_00]: All right, so one of the places that that that the injury bogus hitting as we've already kind of alluded to most is in the wider seaver room.
- 8:19[SPEAKER_00]: And so with the with Brandon I, you obviously still recovering from his ACL MCL injury.
- 8:26[SPEAKER_00]: that who knows what the timetable is on that.
- 8:30[SPEAKER_00]: And John Jennings, nursing the calf injury, there's been a lot of, as we've noted, inzenouts, equinovius St.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: Brown has been in and then out and then back in, and he as a Bella's come in and then got out.
- 8:45[SPEAKER_00]: with a quant, quant, quant has quafus, is that?
- 8:49[SPEAKER_00]: I'm totally bashing his name, a treat of form.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: He was here for a couple of days, like the foreign dinners, Widersiver Room is, as we've already discussed.
- 9:04[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, we've talked about this being a major area of concern, even with both, with John Jennings' healthy
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: Jacob Cowling is still out, I think the expectation has been that he'll be ready for the Broncos.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: No, no, the Vegas one.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: Right, the next, the next, I think that's right.
- 9:28[SPEAKER_00]: Is that's on, is that's on right to you?
- 9:30[SPEAKER_02]: Thanks, yeah.
- 9:31[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, it's vague.
- 9:32[SPEAKER_00]: Vegas, not not the Broncos, the other FC West team.
- 9:37[SPEAKER_00]: They'll be ready for that.
- 9:39[SPEAKER_00]: That joint practice ends and preseason games.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: So right now, the current Forty Niners depth chart or just grouping for the wider receivers consists of Jordan Watkins, who's rookie.
- 9:54[SPEAKER_00]: Democracy Robinson, who is very likely to be suspended for
- 9:57[SPEAKER_00]: a couple of games to start the season.
- 9:59[SPEAKER_00]: Ricky Pierce all to Rick Owens, John Jennings, who we already mentioned, who's been hurt.
- 10:04[SPEAKER_00]: Isaiah Hodgkin, Hodgkin's who, I haven't really heard anything about, and he's, you know, just kind of a been floating around the league kind of guy.
- 10:11[SPEAKER_00]: Russell Gage, who has been out of football for a year.
- 10:15[SPEAKER_00]: Jacob Cowen, who's also hurt during your and during your burden.
- 10:18[SPEAKER_00]: who is a seventh round draft pick and rookie.
- 10:23[SPEAKER_00]: They just also released Isaiah Neor, who was a name that was on the radar for a lot of people.
- 10:31[SPEAKER_00]: Didn't really work out.
- 10:33[SPEAKER_00]: Trent Taylor is technically on the IR, but he's not going to play for this team this year.
- 10:37[SPEAKER_00]: He's done for the year.
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's pretty much it.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, then, then look good there, but there is, there is good news in that front and that is that.
- 10:50[SPEAKER_00]: Um, Ricky Pierce all seems to be having a good training camp so far.
- 10:55[SPEAKER_02]: Seems to be having a great training camp like the reports I'm reading from Victor for who I think is the new athletic beat like junior beat writer for the forty nine years along with map arrows.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_02]: She's like the number one option right now, and basically locked in with Brock Perry, just winning every rap, which is great.
- 11:14[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, that's exactly what you want to see.
- 11:17[SPEAKER_02]: It's super exciting because, like, Pierce Salt is sort of that lynchkin, that's that pivot point where you don't know like, like if he plays well, the forty-nineers passing the tag goes from like, oh, maybe pretty good to like,
- 11:33[SPEAKER_02]: phenomenal right because like that's a third assuming everyone's healthy.
- 11:36[SPEAKER_02]: That's a third like good-wide receiver that you have as opposed to maybe one.
- 11:42[SPEAKER_02]: So just I think it's a really really like encouraging and good sign that he's likely to know obviously training camp to the extent of matters like not super clear but still better better he'd be doing well to not well.
- 11:57[SPEAKER_00]: That's the way I view training camp right and especially for somebody who
- 12:01[SPEAKER_00]: didn't have training camp last year because of all the injuries that he was going through and then obviously the
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: the gunshot incident.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: Like his offseason last year was so weird and they always talked about how weird the offseason is between your last year of college and the draft and all that kind of stuff and how it's not normal.
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: Well his was even more abnormal than normal than regular, you know what I mean.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's good that he's gaining confidence even if technically none of this counts for anything and we're not we're not proponents of like
- 12:36[SPEAKER_00]: counting stats or something like that during training camp.
- 12:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's not really the point.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: The point is that he seems to be connecting with Brock party, which is important.
- 12:44[SPEAKER_00]: The other part is that he seems to be building his own confidence that he can can do the job and that will matter a lot.
- 12:51[SPEAKER_00]: And then once John Jennings is healthy and ready to go out there, then that adds another layer.
- 12:56[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's a George Kiddle you had that to Christian Kaffrey and then eventually with Brandon Iook hopefully and suddenly things don't look so dire on the wider in the wider silver room and really in the past catchers altogether.
- 13:10[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just thinking that sort of That's really where things are going to change is for the forty-nineers if you get
- 13:20[SPEAKER_02]: Like here's all taking that next step and then next there's a lot of things for the future right because now you're less worried about Jennings in his contract I mean it's a really important and like like you said the stats matter less but just the fact that things are really clicking for him that's really good to see right and also takes pressure off of like a Jordan Watkins who
- 13:42[SPEAKER_00]: like let's just be honest, uh, wider severs in shane hands offense as rookies, generally not like something that he immediately goes into trust.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: I feel like Pierce all would have been in a different boat last year if he had had a normal offseason, just because he was a first rounder, but um, because because Brandon I who was a little bit, some of that was for his hand was forced because of, do you understand me missing a lot of time and all that stuff that year, but um,
- 14:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think it'll be really important there.
- 14:11[SPEAKER_00]: So speaking of Watkins and rookies.
- 14:15[SPEAKER_00]: So Watkins, I think it's is holding his own.
- 14:19[SPEAKER_00]: I haven't really seen anything good or bad one way the other with him, but there are a couple of rookies who are standing out.
- 14:26[SPEAKER_00]: to come to mind as guys that are standing out for really good reasons.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: And one that has some catching up to do.
- 14:35[SPEAKER_00]: So the two that are standing out for good reasons are up and stout who seems to be at least by most accounts, winning the nickel cornerback job with his play in training camp so far, even though the unofficial depth chart for the forty-nineers to have same as the number two,
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: Whatever that doesn't really mean anything and then the other one is CJ West the defense of tackle out of Indiana He was born and then he's drafted and he also seems to be put on a show.
- 15:07[SPEAKER_00]: It's just like a like a Maybe a little shades of DJ Jones kind of thing which would be just like excellent because the four ninjas have not had a player like that well since DJ Jones left
- 15:19[SPEAKER_00]: Um, so that's good.
- 15:20[SPEAKER_00]: I'm glad to hear that.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: We talked a lot about up and stout and how excited we were for him and the the opportunity that he might have and it seems like so far he's living up to the building.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 15:31[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, like, he's getting like run with the first team and he seems to be dominating, which is beautiful.
- 15:39[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly what you want to see.
- 15:42[SPEAKER_02]: And I just like I was a bit of a skeptic of the pick at the time.
- 15:46[SPEAKER_02]: I think if you go back to our post draft sort of podcast.
- 15:50[SPEAKER_02]: And I was just not sure if they needed like a small slot corner, but with the way he's playing I mean.
- 15:56[SPEAKER_02]: You'll take that every day of the week.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_02]: So that's really exciting.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_02]: The CJ West thing I think is a little more expected.
- 16:02[SPEAKER_02]: Not that he would dominate to the level, but I think both of us were like, oh yeah, this is a guy who has a chance to be a real like surprise breakout star.
- 16:11[SPEAKER_02]: And like you said, Phil, a really important role for the forty-nine years.
- 16:14[SPEAKER_02]: That's more important because Kevin Gibbons has a pictorial injury and it's going to miss part of the regular season.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_02]: That's an injury that really matters and that's it's good that CJ West is already stepping up and maybe is going to get some like rotation time when the season starts.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: Yep.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: Speaking of interior, uh, defensive line, and however, Cleo Davis is also another, no one he's on a rookie, but it's just a number, a guy that is who's stood out that I've seen from that interior.
- 16:45[SPEAKER_00]: Somebody who is maybe off to a slow start, I think being generous is Alfred Collins, the other, uh, defensive tackle that the foreigners took in the draft.
- 16:55[SPEAKER_00]: He was our second round tick.
- 16:56[SPEAKER_00]: Um,
- 16:57[SPEAKER_00]: Part of this has to do with the fact that you miss OTAs and everything because of the contract situation.
- 17:02[SPEAKER_00]: We have to blame the Houston Texans for this, right?
- 17:06[SPEAKER_00]: Like there's their fault.
- 17:08[SPEAKER_00]: Because they gave, if I have this correct, they gave their second rounder.
- 17:13[SPEAKER_00]: a fully guaranteed team contract, which then, of course, every other second rounder was like, well, I want a fully guaranteed contract.
- 17:20[SPEAKER_00]: And that caused holdouts for, not holdouts, but it caused delays in contract signing for the entirety of the second round for a really long time.
- 17:30[SPEAKER_00]: We talked about it a couple of weeks ago that Alfred Collins was the straw that broke the camel's back, he accepted a fairly high percentage of his contract, but not a hundred percent and has got into camp.
- 17:42[SPEAKER_00]: on time and everything but it appears that him having missed OTAs and all that kind of stuff is hampering his start to training camp and that's not ideal.
- 17:55[SPEAKER_02]: Not ideal at all and especially because this can be a bit that I promise only ten seconds of my personal grade.
- 18:02[SPEAKER_02]: I've revered ports that say the little Johnson is absolutely locking people up in current streaming camp.
- 18:08[SPEAKER_02]: So I'm just saying, you know, often stouts great too, but two lockdown corners that would have been what have been pretty ideal to me, but now I mean, I think that like
- 18:20[SPEAKER_02]: But I agree with everything you're saying, right?
- 18:23[SPEAKER_02]: It's just not clear how much of this is like Collins needing to just get up to speed and sort of be behind the curve.
- 18:30[SPEAKER_02]: Well, because he missed all of the like prior offseason work and because it's his work year and how much of this is like a potentially like legitimately difficult and important like thing that he's like struggling in this or tend something about him is like a prospect.
- 18:46[SPEAKER_02]: It's we just we won't know until like there's more time.
- 18:51[SPEAKER_02]: Obviously, it wanted to be like doing better, but that's kind of the way the cookie crumbles, right?
- 18:58[SPEAKER_02]: So it's especially bad because I think like in an ideal world, you'd be starting already, but you get them in there, especially because this is a position that the four of the renters aren't super like deep in and don't really have like a super talented guy like waiting there.
- 19:14[SPEAKER_02]: So you'd want fallen to take the, take the bull by the horn, so to speak.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_02]: Not ideal, but I don't know if I'm panicking just yet.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, I think it's it's certainly too soon to panic, but it is it will be something to keep an eye on throughout preseason like can he catch up?
- 19:34[SPEAKER_00]: Is this going to slow him down to start the regular season?
- 19:39[SPEAKER_00]: And will there be other opportunities for somebody to step into a spot?
- 19:44[SPEAKER_00]: Will that open up like like an Evan Anderson does he have more opportunity to to make the team mention Clea Davis?
- 19:51[SPEAKER_00]: Jordan Elliott still on the team.
- 19:53[SPEAKER_00]: That's somebody that you have to watch out for.
- 19:56[SPEAKER_00]: And then obviously with Kevin Gibbons missing, that's going to open up a spot there.
- 20:01[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how many defensive tackles they're going to end up keeping.
- 20:05[SPEAKER_00]: Is it, I don't know, three or four, maybe this team is traditionally kind of held on to.
- 20:11[SPEAKER_00]: uh... nine ten defensive lineman uh... and you start thinking about okay well michael Williams is a lock uh... neckbosses a lock cj west is playing himself on the team i think price of is pretty much a lot so there's four right there uh... jordnally it i don't know maybe that the big it's a between a jordnally and a clear davis time it type of thing i think out i mean i don't think that alforcault is gonna not make the team but if he is coming in very clearly it's like the fourth defense of tackle
- 20:41[SPEAKER_00]: that's certainly going to put him in a situation where you have to pay attention to that and is he going to like get himself into the rotation or is the slowdown going to impact the entirety of his year at that point
- 20:54[SPEAKER_00]: You're still maybe not panicking because he's still got three more years left, but it's not a good, not a good thing for your second round tactic.
- 21:01[SPEAKER_00]: Unfortunately, this is something that we've seen in very recent future, or past with second round tactics, like Drake Jackson, for example, as a second round tactic, whoever but he was really high on, and then it didn't really get off to a great start, and then things kind of snowballed from there, and that's definitely something you want to avoid.
- 21:20[SPEAKER_02]: And we also have, you know, the example of
- 21:25[SPEAKER_02]: Aaron banks were like the first year he just didn't play at all right.
- 21:29[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, we're like, oh, is this a bad pick?
- 21:31[SPEAKER_02]: Then boom three years like quality starting guard play now making twenty like million a year with the packers.
- 21:37[SPEAKER_02]: So I feel like to some extent there is a bit of me that's like, oh, it's probably not like a huge deal.
- 21:46[SPEAKER_02]: But again, like it's just like really
- 21:52[SPEAKER_02]: It's hard to say, it's just annoying, I'd say, that you're not getting an impact play immediately, because that's important, right?
- 22:03[SPEAKER_02]: That's like, this draft was supposed to be the like, we need contributors now, and he was supposed to be a guy who, because he's good against the run contributes now.
- 22:13[SPEAKER_02]: So I mean, it's just not ideal, I'd say,
- 22:18[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 22:19[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, I think that's definitely true.
- 22:21[SPEAKER_00]: But on the flip side, like if you look at the rest of their draft, so we talked about up to the start, he seems to be arrow up.
- 22:31[SPEAKER_00]: Micah Williams seems to be for all expenses.
- 22:35[SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't think anybody is worried about him at all.
- 22:37[SPEAKER_00]: Maybe
- 22:38[SPEAKER_00]: Is he going to be like a past rusher and like I don't think that maybe necessarily right off the bat, but he's going to be an impact like a he's going to be able to play a role in this team.
- 22:48[SPEAKER_00]: I think Matt may go call him a three a starter on this team already.
- 22:53[SPEAKER_00]: So they got those CJ West seems to be panning out effectively as well.
- 22:59[SPEAKER_00]: Nick Martin while he is getting
- 23:02[SPEAKER_00]: It seems like D Winters is going to outplay him for that second linebacker role.
- 23:07[SPEAKER_00]: Nick Martin certainly seems to be in the mix as the guy who could be the third guy off the in that group.
- 23:14[SPEAKER_00]: So like a de facto starter, but probably the first guy off the off the field in nickel and dime situations.
- 23:23[SPEAKER_00]: I know there's been some good things that about Jordan James and his opportunity.
- 23:27[SPEAKER_00]: He did have a little bit of an injury.
- 23:29[SPEAKER_00]: but he's back and with Isaac Garendo, also injured, we miss that.
- 23:33[SPEAKER_00]: Let's just see, just keeps adding up.
- 23:35[SPEAKER_00]: There's an opportunity for him.
- 23:37[SPEAKER_00]: So it really is like the news, Marcus Sile, who I probably shouldn't have mentioned is the guy who won't make the team, especially given the way other moves have gone so far this year.
- 23:53[SPEAKER_00]: It just feels like
- 23:55[SPEAKER_00]: Alfred Collins is the one member of the draft class, at least so far.
- 23:59[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, the two-wider seabers are kind of like, eh, like, they're on the fringes of things, but they probably were going to be on the fringes anyway, just because of the position that they play in the other guys that are on the roster.
- 24:10[SPEAKER_00]: But, like, Alfred Collins is the only one that I've heard that we've heard, like, truly negative things about the rest of them, or either, like, real arrow up guys, or, eh, like, it's fine, like, nothing spectacular or nothing bad.
- 24:24[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, he's the only guy who's below expectation.
- 24:27[SPEAKER_02]: I'd say right now.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_00]: Right.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah.
- 24:28[SPEAKER_02]: And that, like, just a synthesized.
- 24:30[SPEAKER_02]: And I think that's the problem is.
- 24:34[SPEAKER_02]: He's probably one of if not the like most important guys you want to be at expectation or above because you want like you're I think we were all expecting him to be a starter right like right sort of like an opening like three attacks something like that and that's just that's just not the case right now but I agree it's sort of
- 24:57[SPEAKER_02]: It's one sort of like slight brown on an otherwise totally like good looking draft class so far and again like so many things happen over the course of the season so like you've been saying nothing to get a learn by but not ideal.
- 25:13[SPEAKER_00]: All right, one more topic for conversation related to training camp.
- 25:17[SPEAKER_00]: And then after this, we have an interview with Chris Allen from Fantasy Life, who's good enough to talk to us about the upcoming four-and-end or season from a fantasy perspective.
- 25:27[SPEAKER_00]: So stay tuned for that.
- 25:29[SPEAKER_00]: But before that, we do have to talk about the most important thing, Oxyaz, and that is, the four-and-end owners in their most recent batch of roster news, they released Greg Joseph.
- 25:42[SPEAKER_00]: Does that mean the kicking competition is over?
- 25:44[SPEAKER_00]: Did Jake moody win?
- 25:46[SPEAKER_02]: So I actually think, no, I think this is because of the Kyle Shanahan quote, which I think you might be getting to, but just that like, I think Shanahan said, we just couldn't afford to carry two kickers, which makes sense.
- 26:03[SPEAKER_02]: We've just talked about all these injuries, but he was like, yeah, Moody's always competing against everyone who's out of the market, which is not something I think he'd say about
- 26:13[SPEAKER_02]: your ticket, if you think that like, you're really like sold on him.
- 26:19[SPEAKER_02]: So like, no, I, if anything, I think Moody got saved by the fact that he has additional years left on his contract.
- 26:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, no, I completely agree.
- 26:30[SPEAKER_00]: I did not understand like he got released and I my first thought was oh man like is it over?
- 26:36[SPEAKER_00]: But then I started thinking about it and I was and then other smarter smarter people than me I suppose started saying similar things to what you're saying and then Jan and confirmed it later like we just We just can't afford to have two kickers on there.
- 26:51[SPEAKER_00]: My guess is that Greg Joseph was released with like a hey once the week is over
- 26:56[SPEAKER_00]: We'll give you a call and see if you want to come back.
- 26:59[SPEAKER_00]: We'll be happy to let you back in kind of thing.
- 27:03[SPEAKER_00]: That would be, that would be my guess.
- 27:05[SPEAKER_00]: This is not over.
- 27:08[SPEAKER_00]: Nothing about any of the reports regarding the way the competition suggests that it's over.
- 27:15[SPEAKER_00]: They've been fairly neck and neck, I think, in terms of just like
- 27:22[SPEAKER_00]: them, you know, how it's going.
- 27:24[SPEAKER_00]: So far, like Matt Nioca always good with the coming in with the, oh, Jake, Joseph was four for five.
- 27:30[SPEAKER_00]: And, but just to completely complete aside, they only kick five times during the entire practice.
- 27:37[SPEAKER_00]: What are they doing there?
- 27:38[SPEAKER_00]: That's the time.
- 27:41[SPEAKER_02]: Honestly, great quick kickoffs, baby.
- 27:44[SPEAKER_02]: Well, so you see, so I actually, I'm trying to think because I remember,
- 27:50[SPEAKER_02]: I think Bill Belichick probably got about this a long time ago.
- 27:54[SPEAKER_02]: When someone was asking, oh, why is it that like punters that's pulled the ball down instead of letting it back up quarterback?
- 28:01[SPEAKER_02]: And it was all about sort of how
- 28:03[SPEAKER_02]: The way practice is now worked, you're trying to optimize time.
- 28:07[SPEAKER_02]: So you know, it's special teams to sort of be doing its own thing back up.
- 28:10[SPEAKER_00]: What about some of the things to do?
- 28:12[SPEAKER_02]: Exactly.
- 28:13[SPEAKER_02]: But then my question is, but on a kickoff and a punt, right?
- 28:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 28:17[SPEAKER_02]: Like your juniors are probably your backups.
- 28:20[SPEAKER_02]: So there.
- 28:21[SPEAKER_02]: Getting like position snaps.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know.
- 28:23[SPEAKER_00]: That's a real question.
- 28:26[SPEAKER_00]: If anyone has gone to a training camp day and has watched the entirety of practice, please chime in.
- 28:33[SPEAKER_00]: Please come in and tell us what's going on.
- 28:35[SPEAKER_00]: Because what I'm picturing is them just kind of chilling and then they'll like every ten minutes they'll take a kick.
- 28:43[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know how long has it practiced like two hours or an hour and a half or whatever.
- 28:48[SPEAKER_00]: That's really funny to me.
- 28:49[SPEAKER_00]: Just like I'm just imagining
- 28:52[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, because you can't be, I mean, there must be obviously there must be punting practice going on too, right?
- 29:00[SPEAKER_00]: So the long snap are in the punner would be occupied there.
- 29:03[SPEAKER_00]: So then really what are the kickers doing at that point?
- 29:06[SPEAKER_00]: Are they literally just standing watching the kicker?
- 29:08[SPEAKER_00]: They're the punter punter.
- 29:10[SPEAKER_00]: And then the punter, at least when the kickers are practicing their field goals, the punter has an activity.
- 29:17[SPEAKER_00]: So that's kind of funny to me.
- 29:18[SPEAKER_00]: It's just really funny.
- 29:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I don't think the number of chain has changed.
- 29:23[SPEAKER_00]: Like I don't feel like moody was kicking ten times when it was just him last year.
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: You know what I mean?
- 29:27[SPEAKER_00]: No, it's still fine.
- 29:28[SPEAKER_02]: It's always fine.
- 29:29[SPEAKER_02]: It was like five.
- 29:31[SPEAKER_02]: I think the first practice out.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
- 29:33[SPEAKER_00]: It's like five and it's like short and then they get progressed way longer and I think fifty-five yards the last one which I think is really funny because it's like why aren't they trying longer feel goals because he's definitely attempted those in games anyway.
- 29:49[SPEAKER_00]: Cool.
- 29:50[SPEAKER_00]: Well, before you know, I'm glad we're on the same page on that one by the way.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: Ridiculous.
- 29:56[SPEAKER_00]: I think jig.
- 29:57[SPEAKER_00]: I think great job is Joseph will be back before training camps over.
- 30:01[SPEAKER_00]: Let's all go set.
- 30:03[SPEAKER_00]: All right, the foreigners open their preseason play on Saturday.
- 30:08[SPEAKER_00]: Denver Broncos coming to Santa Clara to take on the foreigners, which means the return of two former foreigners.
- 30:16[SPEAKER_00]: Well, I'm sure there might be more than two, but there's two notable names on the roster for the Broncos.
- 30:22[SPEAKER_00]: That's Drake Greenlaw and Talonu Fonga.
- 30:24[SPEAKER_00]: I doubt either of them will be playing given their extensive injuries, especially the recent injury history.
- 30:30[SPEAKER_00]: But I'm sure it'll be good for players to see each other and all that kind of stuff.
- 30:34[SPEAKER_00]: Apparently really good news on training camp coming out of Drake Green Law.
- 30:39[SPEAKER_00]: Out on Drake Green Law, Sean Payton had a lot of nice things to say about him.
- 30:43[SPEAKER_00]: So let's get to know.
- 30:45[SPEAKER_00]: So are we excited for preseason game access?
- 30:49[SPEAKER_00]: Is that something we get excited about?
- 30:51[SPEAKER_02]: Yes, very excited.
- 30:53[SPEAKER_02]: I don't know.
- 30:54[SPEAKER_02]: I really like sort of the like pomp and circumstances.
- 30:59[SPEAKER_02]: Oh, they're on the field.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_02]: They're playing.
- 31:00[SPEAKER_02]: I mean, I always used to have like a guy.
- 31:04[SPEAKER_02]: a backup who was like, yeah, I really wanted to make the team and seeing how he plays.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_03]: Right.
- 31:08[SPEAKER_02]: I think it's it's just fun.
- 31:09[SPEAKER_02]: It's nice to get into the rhythm and as I've mentioned many times on this podcast, I can sometimes get very amped up for forty nine years regular season games.
- 31:19[SPEAKER_02]: So this is great.
- 31:20[SPEAKER_02]: Like, I'm my heart isn't racing.
- 31:23[SPEAKER_02]: I'm not like stressing at what I'm watching.
- 31:25[SPEAKER_02]: It's just like a nice football.
- 31:28[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, as a non member of non-resident of California and its facilities.
- 31:38[SPEAKER_00]: I generally can't even get the preseason games.
- 31:41[SPEAKER_00]: Sometimes like NFL Network will re-show them at like eleven thirty p.m.
- 31:47[SPEAKER_00]: or some random time.
- 31:49[SPEAKER_00]: But like, oh, this is the game for me yesterday.
- 31:50[SPEAKER_00]: I'm like, alright, well, maybe I'll throw this on.
- 31:53[SPEAKER_00]: So that's kind of how that ends up working.
- 31:55[SPEAKER_00]: Everyone's in a while.
- 31:56[SPEAKER_00]: We'll get that sort of national broadcast slot for
- 32:00[SPEAKER_00]: one of the preseason games.
- 32:01[SPEAKER_00]: I do not believe any of these are going to file into that, but we'll keep an eye on.
- 32:06[SPEAKER_00]: So all right, OX has any final thoughts before we send it over to our interview with Chris Allen.
- 32:15[SPEAKER_02]: Just that, like, I think like everyone listening, you're going to have a great time listening to Chris.
- 32:20[SPEAKER_02]: He's super smart.
- 32:22[SPEAKER_02]: Definitely knows what he's talking about.
- 32:23[SPEAKER_02]: I learned, like, I think I'm going to learn a lot and it's just
- 32:28[SPEAKER_02]: I'm just really excited for that, you know, both Robert and I are not very good at fantasy.
- 32:34[SPEAKER_02]: So it's good to have an expert in because I know a lot of people care about it.
- 32:38[SPEAKER_02]: Yep.
- 32:39[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 32:40[SPEAKER_00]: Well, with that, let's go ahead and kick it over to that interview with Chris Allen.
- 32:49[SPEAKER_00]: All right, here with us on the edition of the nine or nois podcast we have Mr. Chris Allen from fantasy life Chris thanks for joining us on this episode.
- 33:00[SPEAKER_00]: How are things with you?
- 33:03[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, I'm trying to get in tune with the upcoming season.
- 33:07[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you guys feel the same way.
- 33:09[SPEAKER_01]: It's during the earlier parts of the off season.
- 33:12[SPEAKER_01]: You get a chance to relax and then comes June.
- 33:15[SPEAKER_01]: You start to feel the tug of the news and notes of rookie training camp.
- 33:21[SPEAKER_01]: And then now here in early August, we're getting
- 33:24[SPEAKER_01]: actual games.
- 33:25[SPEAKER_01]: We saw the Hall of Fame game just this past week.
- 33:28[SPEAKER_01]: Preseason games are about to start.
- 33:30[SPEAKER_01]: It almost feels like we're in the thick of it already.
- 33:33[SPEAKER_01]: So I'm trying to brace myself.
- 33:34[SPEAKER_01]: I don't know if you all feel the same, but otherwise I'm excited to actually see real football played out on the big screen.
- 33:41[SPEAKER_01]: And I'm really, I'm really excited to see how everything turns out after three, four months of us projecting rookies, offensive situations, everything in between
- 33:51[SPEAKER_01]: Jalen Hurts vs. Cam Newton, all that stuff are ready to put all that stuff to bed, and let's actually watch football for real.
- 33:56[SPEAKER_01]: So I appreciate y'all have me on.
- 33:58[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, we're excited to have this conversation.
- 34:01[SPEAKER_00]: I think I can speak for the podcast as a whole, let me talk about that.
- 34:04[SPEAKER_00]: We're just not, we're not very good at fantasy football.
- 34:08[SPEAKER_00]: So we will take all the information that you can give us.
- 34:12[SPEAKER_00]: So I'll be going to get us started by just telling us a little bit about you, about your backgrounds, how you ended up working in fantasy football, and then a little bit about the fantasy life and what it is that you do there.
- 34:26[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, sure.
- 34:27[SPEAKER_01]: And so I don't do all of this by trade.
- 34:30[SPEAKER_01]: I'm probably just as good or bad at fantasy football as both of you are.
- 34:35[SPEAKER_01]: I got into it because I have a technical background.
- 34:37[SPEAKER_01]: I'm a mechanical engineer by trade.
- 34:39[SPEAKER_01]: I work for the Air Force as an engineer.
- 34:43[SPEAKER_01]: And I got into football because of the data behind it.
- 34:47[SPEAKER_01]: It was maybe seven, eight years ago.
- 34:49[SPEAKER_01]: I started hearing questions about how does weather impact fantasy football?
- 34:54[SPEAKER_01]: Because
- 34:55[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of the narratives that you hear in windy games or snowy games are things that we lean on as a crutch.
- 35:02[SPEAKER_01]: But at the same time, I wanted to try and see if there's a way for me to figure out from an analytical sense if any of those narratives that you see or hear on Sundays, Mondays or Thursdays, if those were legit.
- 35:14[SPEAKER_01]: Like if it's a windy game,
- 35:16[SPEAKER_01]: don't start the disson jacks in the world or the reshitchie heeds or even Brandon and I you since we'll be talking about that particular team.
- 35:23[SPEAKER_01]: The guys that are running far down field don't start those guys because teams aren't going to throw as far or if it's snowy start all your running backs because teams are going to lean more on the run.
- 35:32[SPEAKER_01]: So I put together a short series of articles trying to research play tendencies how to quarterback's operate accuracy play calling all of those things.
- 35:41[SPEAKER_01]: to try and debunk in a sense, a lot of the weather narratives that go in and out.
- 35:45[SPEAKER_01]: And then from there, things just more or less snowballed to keep harping on the weather puns.
- 35:50[SPEAKER_01]: But everything kind of moved from there trying to infuse data with this game that we play, but also
- 35:58[SPEAKER_01]: Try and convey it in a way that's digestible.
- 36:01[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of my hobbies, whether it's video games or movies or my family or friends, just trying to integrate a lot of that into a way that would make things easier for somebody that isn't as nerdy about this stuff as I am.
- 36:13[SPEAKER_01]: That's the way that I try and approach it as much as possible.
- 36:16[SPEAKER_01]: So I've just been really blessed to kind of go from
- 36:19[SPEAKER_01]: the companies that I used to be working for now to be able to speak on this as kind of a hobby term part-time job.
- 36:28[SPEAKER_01]: It really is kind of interesting to see how things can start to evolve over six, seven, eight years of me doing this.
- 36:34[SPEAKER_01]: So it has run a ton of fun to be able to
- 36:37[SPEAKER_01]: call people that I refer to as my heroes, my peers, or especially for a guy like Matthew Barry, who's been essentially the godfather of fantasy football.
- 36:46[SPEAKER_01]: He's not my boss.
- 36:47[SPEAKER_01]: I can point to the part that he has in the Avengers end game and see like that.
- 36:52[SPEAKER_01]: I work for that guy.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_01]: Right.
- 36:53[SPEAKER_01]: Yes.
- 36:54[SPEAKER_01]: It has a camera appearance in an Avengers movie.
- 36:56[SPEAKER_01]: Like I know that guy.
- 36:57[SPEAKER_01]: I've seen him.
- 36:58[SPEAKER_01]: He hired me.
- 36:59[SPEAKER_01]: So all of the all that to say that to be able to take a passion of mine molded into something that is that I thought was a hobby at the time and turn it into something that is become so much more than that has at least been one of the at least things that kind of
- 37:15[SPEAKER_01]: keeps me going and even though like I was saying earlier we're about to hop into the next four months of just craziness day in and day out, having to react and try and convey what we think happened and what will happen to other people that are trying to consume the content that we create.
- 37:32[SPEAKER_01]: It's still just a wonderful joy to be able to do it year and year out.
- 37:38[SPEAKER_01]: Awesome.
- 37:39[SPEAKER_02]: Well, first Chris, thank you so much for your service.
- 37:41[SPEAKER_02]: And I think I can speak for the podcast when I say, we totally get where you're coming from with like taking that passion and sort of like doing more with it and trying to get that content out on both Robert and I are big fans of the forty niners and that's sort of how we got started off in the nine or nose podcast.
- 37:58[SPEAKER_02]: So because you said you're so interested in data and because I really need help figuring out how I'm going to approach my upcoming fantasy football draft, I was interested in what kind of elements do you take into account when you're thinking about what players to draft, sort of what positions to highlight, sort of what's your checklist when you're going through a draft and thinking about how you're going to set up your fantasy football team.
- 38:22[SPEAKER_01]: So in the earlier parts of the draft, one of the things that I try and look for is opportunity, an opportunity at the core positions.
- 38:29[SPEAKER_01]: And what I say core positions, I mean running backs and wide receivers, because think about it from this standpoint, you pull up a regular roster, a quarterback, two running backs, maybe at least two wide receivers, depending on which platform you use, it might require a three wide receivers of flex and a tight end.
- 38:45[SPEAKER_01]: So I just rattled through all that to say, we start way more running backs and wide receivers than do quarterbacks and tight ends.
- 38:52[SPEAKER_01]: So I try and focus on getting the star players that are associated with those positions.
- 38:57[SPEAKER_01]: Now, it's not to say that trying to grab a Josh Allen or a Traimic Bride or a George Kittle in the first four, five, six rounds is an important, but because we need so many more running backs and wide receivers, I try and balance or bias my roster to getting a lot of those types of positions or filling up those positions as quickly as I can.
- 39:16[SPEAKER_01]: And even past that, so let's focus on running backs and wide receivers.
- 39:20[SPEAKER_01]: Well, not all of them are created the same, right?
- 39:22[SPEAKER_01]: They're different archetypes of running backs, different archetypes of wide receivers as well.
- 39:27[SPEAKER_01]: And trying to have a nuanced type or contextualized approach to each of those wide receivers is how you can best structure your team.
- 39:35[SPEAKER_01]: And I'll give you a quick example.
- 39:36[SPEAKER_01]: So let's say for running backs.
- 39:38[SPEAKER_01]: you've got the one-o-two-one-o-three-one-o-four somewhere in there.
- 39:43[SPEAKER_01]: And typically the running backs that are drafting that range are the Sakeland Barcus of the World, the Bijan Robinson's, and maybe Jamir Gibbs, and depending on which analyst you typically go to, Jamir Gibbs might be a little bit higher than that, but either way.
- 39:56[SPEAKER_01]: But what's the common denominator across each of those running backs?
- 40:01[SPEAKER_01]: Outside of their names, the
- 40:03[SPEAKER_01]: the hype around each of them, the fact that Jamir Gives can take a five yard run and turn into a forty yard touchdown, cyclone Barclay, the fact that he can essentially backflip over a defender if he wants to at any particular point in time.
- 40:16[SPEAKER_01]: It's the opportunity that's associated with each of those running backs and not just the touches and total, but also the rushing portion and then also the receiving portion.
- 40:24[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, it's really no secret that a guy like Christian McAfrey and I'm sure we'll be talking about him later.
- 40:30[SPEAKER_01]: There's no secret as to why he was able to become offensive player of the year back in twenty twenty three.
- 40:35[SPEAKER_01]: He not only had the rushing workload to go with it, but also the receptions.
- 40:38[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, he was rocking a sixteen seventeen percent target share when he was on that campaign.
- 40:44[SPEAKER_01]: So if we can see if we can start to understand across each of those running backs that hey, I'm not just getting a running back.
- 40:51[SPEAKER_01]: I'm not just getting a Russia of the football.
- 40:53[SPEAKER_01]: I'm getting a receiver of the football as well.
- 40:55[SPEAKER_01]: And not just the
- 40:57[SPEAKER_01]: Stereotypical running back that just goes outside or just goes right past the line of scribbage catches a one-yard dump-off and tries to turn into a five-six-yard game.
- 41:06[SPEAKER_01]: Now I'm talking about the one that lines up in the slot or in Christian McAfrey's sake or in his example, he lines up out wide running wheel routes, actually earning legitimate air yards from a wide receiver standpoint.
- 41:18[SPEAKER_01]: It's understanding how each of those running backs are being deployed on the field that should allow you to rack and stack them in such a way that you have a way to value each of them so that you're now filling up your roster and not just with stars, but even once you get into the middle rounds, players would upside that should be able to outkick their ADP.
- 41:36[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that'll make sense to me, I think.
- 41:39[SPEAKER_00]: Math.
- 41:43[SPEAKER_00]: No, I think that's really well said and definitely things to be thinking about.
- 41:47[SPEAKER_00]: So you mentioned a couple of of these guys already, but because obviously this is a foreign and honor specific podcast, it is we would be remiss if we didn't turn and focus on specific foreign and honor players.
- 42:02[SPEAKER_00]: So kind of a two part question here.
- 42:05[SPEAKER_00]: Which players from the four in honors do you have your eye on specifically for this season?
- 42:09[SPEAKER_00]: I think there's some fairly obvious ones, but also maybe some sleepers that you think people aren't talking about enough from the four in honors specifically.
- 42:17[SPEAKER_01]: So I think the easy one to point to is George Kittle at this point.
- 42:21[SPEAKER_01]: If you look at his target share amongst most of the tight ends that might get drafted in his range, I mean, he's been sitting at around like an eighteen, nineteen percent target share over the past three to four seasons.
- 42:32[SPEAKER_01]: And to kind of put the target share into context, I mean, wide receiver twos like let's say your
- 42:39[SPEAKER_01]: Your T-higgins of the world, all of T-higgins might be a little bit like higher end of the spectrum there.
- 42:45[SPEAKER_01]: Maybe a guy like Devonta Smith, but wide receivers in that particular range that play the wide receiver to roll on their team, typically sit at around a twenty percent charge here, twenty to twenty one.
- 42:55[SPEAKER_01]: So to see a guy like George Kittle be able to handle that type of workload, but it's not just the fact that he's earning targets.
- 43:02[SPEAKER_01]: His yards after the catch, his ability to force mistackles on the field has been one of the ways that he's been able to earn some of the heights from an efficiency standpoint that makes him a legitimate receiver.
- 43:13[SPEAKER_01]: Like we look past the tight end, moniker, or the position designation next to his name.
- 43:20[SPEAKER_01]: A lot of folks can look at him at least in fantasy circles as a wide receiver.
- 43:24[SPEAKER_01]: The fact that he doesn't line up or he isn't deployed and sits in line with the rest of the offense as much as he's put out in the slot, how many routes he's running on a per game basis and just as general connection with Brock Perti.
- 43:36[SPEAKER_01]: So I think a lot of the other way that a lot of fantasy managers are approaching George Kiddled this season is they look at the surroundings for Brock Perti.
- 43:46[SPEAKER_01]: Brandon, are you?
- 43:47[SPEAKER_01]: No particular timetable for him to get back at least as of right now due to his injury from last season.
- 43:52[SPEAKER_01]: Do you want Jennings also dealing with an injury to Marcus Robinson also kind of hobbled a bit as well.
- 43:59[SPEAKER_01]: So it's just from all the wide receivers and of course we will get into the Christian McCaffery discussion.
- 44:05[SPEAKER_01]: But how many other past catchers can brock party reasonably rely on throughout this season?
- 44:11[SPEAKER_01]: And as of right now, it seems to be that George Kittle is the only one that we can rely on.
- 44:16[SPEAKER_01]: So it's no wonder that his ADP has been pushed up from the let's say mid to late fourth round as it was throughout the early parts of the off season to probably the three four turn if not the middle of
- 44:27[SPEAKER_01]: of the third round, because we see the lack of opportunity for the rest of the past catchers in San Francisco.
- 44:32[SPEAKER_01]: So it's easy to say that, come week one, the one that's going to get most the targets should be George Kittle and he's being valued as such.
- 44:39[SPEAKER_01]: I would say he's probably the one that I have my eye on the most out of the group.
- 44:44[SPEAKER_00]: And anybody that people aren't talking about enough, would you say?
- 44:50[SPEAKER_01]: The one that I don't really see a lot of people talking about is Ricky Pearsal, and I understand why.
- 44:56[SPEAKER_01]: He had, I mean, because of the shooting throughout the, like, during the back end of the offseason last year, the fact that he wasn't able to really get on the field until, like, past a half way mark.
- 45:08[SPEAKER_01]: And then even then, there were so much, so many other things going on with the Fortnite as offense at that point.
- 45:13[SPEAKER_01]: Christian McAfee already been in on the lineup.
- 45:16[SPEAKER_01]: IU was done, Debo Samuel dealing with,
- 45:18[SPEAKER_01]: insert ailment here for Digo Samuel.
- 45:21[SPEAKER_01]: So seeing Ricky Pierce all got on the field, of course, because of the shooting incident, it was something of a miracle just to see him out there, but also his usage.
- 45:30[SPEAKER_01]: There were multiple games over the back end of the season where he wasn't earning any targets, out there running routes, but we weren't really seeing the force fed or even just the amount of production we were hoping to see out of his first year.
- 45:42[SPEAKER_01]: So something of an uneven rookie performance,
- 45:46[SPEAKER_01]: And now with the with the fact that he's been at least not a huge standout in training camp because of some of the injuries they want to try and ramp him back up and make sure that he's ready to go for week one.
- 45:58[SPEAKER_01]: It becomes harder to say that he is going to be a locked in.
- 46:02[SPEAKER_01]: wide receiver one or wide receiver two, however you want to value in fantasy.
- 46:06[SPEAKER_01]: It's hard to say what his value is going to be for the entirety of the season.
- 46:10[SPEAKER_01]: There's no concern about him missing time, but it's just what is his role going to be and how much has his rapport with Brock Perti have been able to evolve from his first season to his second.
- 46:21[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that the uncertainty around Pearson and what he's going to be and what his value to the Four Nars offense and the passing game
- 46:29[SPEAKER_01]: is part of the conundrum for PSOL.
- 46:31[SPEAKER_01]: So I think that's part of why just haven't heard enough about him as it would expect for a guy that at least coming out of college, highly efficient, seems to be the type of wide receiver that would fit well into a Kyle Shane and offense.
- 46:44[SPEAKER_01]: I heard some of the like him drawing comparisons to guys like Cooper Cup that have the route running in yards after the catch ability that she would want in a zone type of offense that Shayna Ham likes to call.
- 46:56[SPEAKER_01]: So all that to say that I think he has all the talent in order to get there, it's just will he be able to get on the field quickly enough throughout the remainder of the training camp.
- 47:07[SPEAKER_01]: And then of course, does he have all of the, will he be in sync enough with Brock Hardy?
- 47:13[SPEAKER_01]: So he can hit the ground running in your two.
- 47:16[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that'll make sense to me.
- 47:18[SPEAKER_02]: Ricky Pierce all is kind of the guy I'm hoping will slip in my draft and I can pick him up, but everyone in my draft is also a forty-nineers fan.
- 47:27[SPEAKER_02]: So I don't know if that's going to happen.
- 47:31[SPEAKER_00]: So I just avoiding the NC Ox entirely, right?
- 47:36[SPEAKER_02]: I think sort of going on this train, you know, we talked about who you're looking at, someone who maybe there's a lot of uncertainty about, are there any players on the forty-niners that you would avoid who you just think are at their current ADP definitely don't draft or in general you think are too risky to really be like selecting
- 47:57[SPEAKER_01]: The one that sticks out to me is Joanne Jennings at this point.
- 48:00[SPEAKER_01]: And it's not because of his twenty twenty four campaign.
- 48:02[SPEAKER_01]: I mean, what was it week three week four when it seemed like he was the second coming of Randy Moss multiple touchdowns.
- 48:09[SPEAKER_01]: And even after he missed three four five games because of the calf injury that he was dealing with in twenty twenty four.
- 48:16[SPEAKER_01]: came back had a wide receiver one type target shared plus twenty percent air yard share was also there and of course it was very hard to doubt his him being in sync with Brock party it was the contested catch portion it was him being a Brock party hitting him across the middle of the field rards yards after the catch all that was there from Jennings to party so now we're looking at
- 48:39[SPEAKER_01]: What's what's transpired over the offseason looking for a contract extension has been on the field had a setback for the calf injury.
- 48:48[SPEAKER_01]: So it does become a little bit concerning where a guy that at the earlier parts of the offseason, I can understand him having a middish round ADP.
- 48:57[SPEAKER_01]: six, seven, eighth round.
- 48:59[SPEAKER_01]: I can completely understand why you'd want to bet on him continuing to do what he did in twenty twenty four, because especially without Debo Samuel being in the fiction now after his trade to Washington, who else could he reliably start to be the wide receiver one for Brock Perti in twenty twenty five.
- 49:15[SPEAKER_01]: We already talked about Brandon and I use a lack of time table for him returning from from his injury.
- 49:20[SPEAKER_01]: So
- 49:21[SPEAKER_01]: Now with Jennings sitting out as long as he had, I can see it's near where we are over-valuing him for twenty twenty five.
- 49:30[SPEAKER_01]: Until I start to see him slide back in drafts a bit more, he is a guy that I would want to avoid until his price kind of corrects itself a bit.
- 49:41[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, I think that that certainly makes sense.
- 49:43[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, it's the same to be fair.
- 49:45[SPEAKER_00]: It's the same, that's the same question that we had.
- 49:48[SPEAKER_00]: We just had a conversation on our last episode about his contract and it's the same.
- 49:52[SPEAKER_00]: I mean, in real, in real time and in fantasy situation, it's the same conversation like he did it once, but his entire, his entire career, I think it, what did we say, actually?
- 50:03[SPEAKER_00]: I was like the three years before that was basically the all of twenty twenty four.
- 50:07[SPEAKER_00]: Like the numbers are almost exactly the same.
- 50:11[SPEAKER_00]: It's actually kind of creepy.
- 50:14[SPEAKER_00]: Like almost the same amount of catches over three seasons as he had last year, almost the same amount of yards over three seasons that he had last year and almost the same amount of touchdowns.
- 50:22[SPEAKER_00]: It's kind of weird.
- 50:23[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that probably has got to play into it too.
- 50:25[SPEAKER_00]: Like right, like he showed us once last year when his back was against the wall because they didn't have any other options.
- 50:32[SPEAKER_00]: I also weren't very good last year, so that probably plays into it a little bit.
- 50:36[SPEAKER_00]: So I think that is certainly something to keep an eye on.
- 50:41[SPEAKER_00]: All right.
- 50:42[SPEAKER_00]: Well, Chris, is there any other anything else that you want us to know about fantasy life about what it is that you all offer?
- 50:51[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know if the service is the right word, but what the content is, I guess, is more the question.
- 50:59[SPEAKER_00]: This is an opportunity to talk about that before we let you go.
- 51:02[SPEAKER_01]: Oh, sure.
- 51:03[SPEAKER_01]: I would say that the first thing is just because of the wealth of knowledge that's there, of course, like, it's not just me.
- 51:10[SPEAKER_01]: I'm more, I'm one of the part-time people, but if you want to get some of the the best projections, Duane McFarlane and Matthew Friedman have been working that behind the scenes throughout most of the off season.
- 51:20[SPEAKER_01]: There's still some time left before the season starts.
- 51:22[SPEAKER_01]: If you're into Bestball,
- 51:23[SPEAKER_01]: Peter Oversett has been manning a lot of the work behind the best ball hub that's allowing you to track a lot of your portfolio and seeing if you're approaching that particular format in the best way.
- 51:34[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, once we get into this season, Kendall Valens-Wale and Adam Rona will be on serious XM talking about, like, waver wire pickups, the
- 51:41[SPEAKER_01]: week that was take away so on and so forth.
- 51:44[SPEAKER_01]: So there's just a wealth of knowledge already at fancy life.
- 51:47[SPEAKER_01]: The one thing that at least I'll try and plug because I'm going to be a much larger part of it is guillotine leagues.
- 51:53[SPEAKER_01]: So Paul charging the creator of guillotine leagues has been a part of fancy life for the past year or so.
- 51:59[SPEAKER_01]: That's going to be another product that we're going to be really pushing this this off this this upcoming season.
- 52:05[SPEAKER_01]: And for anybody that isn't aware,
- 52:07[SPEAKER_01]: So it's essentially a, you can draft, I forget how many teams, I think it's like, twelve, like, thirteen teams that you wind up drafting.
- 52:15[SPEAKER_01]: It can't be even more than that depending on how you set it up.
- 52:17[SPEAKER_01]: But each week, the team that has the lowest score you're done, like you get the chop and you're completely done for the rest of the season.
- 52:25[SPEAKER_01]: So it's an interesting format because it changes how you look at your, at your draft and also how you manage your league throughout the season.
- 52:34[SPEAKER_01]: You guys have been in our managed leaks beforehand.
- 52:37[SPEAKER_01]: It's just when you go to draft, you're thinking about what's going to happen across the entirety of the season.
- 52:43[SPEAKER_01]: Could this rookie become something that's greater than what I'm thinking of, like, where he's out like right now?
- 52:49[SPEAKER_01]: Is this quarterback going to stay healthy throughout the entire season?
- 52:52[SPEAKER_01]: What's going to happen with trades or by the trade deadline?
- 52:54[SPEAKER_01]: Could this guy get traded?
- 52:56[SPEAKER_01]: With guillotine leagues, you're drafting for what's going to happen in that week.
- 53:00[SPEAKER_01]: You're structuring your team for what's going to happen right then.
- 53:03[SPEAKER_01]: So if you have a guy that's on your on your team, so let's say one of the Packers wide receivers because it feels like we play whack-a-mole with those guys we can in a week out because Jordan love and how they structure that wide receiver group.
- 53:15[SPEAKER_01]: You might want not want to start then, especially if they're playing against, let's say the Texan secondary, the Raven secondary or insert bad or like tough team here.
- 53:25[SPEAKER_01]: That because they, if you wind up getting a zero from them or they wind up putting a dead in your roster, you could be the one that falls to the back end of the league and you can be the one to get chopped.
- 53:34[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll be a part of the, the team that's putting up the newsletter.
- 53:37[SPEAKER_01]: There's going to be two, three newsletters a week kind of trying to help people that if you're new to the format.
- 53:43[SPEAKER_01]: You want to try and learn the strategy behind it, what players you should be looking at, in which players you can avoid, both myself and Paul Charcian will be trying to shepherd a lot of people into it and bring people into the format.
- 53:55[SPEAKER_01]: Because in some senses, there aren't too many new ways for us to get excited about fancy football.
- 54:00[SPEAKER_01]: Of course, if you're playing a league that you've been in for the last ten, fifteen, twenty years with your buddies, or whatever the case may be, cat or redraft leagues will always be that avenue for you.
- 54:11[SPEAKER_01]: And the same thing for Dinosaur leagues as well.
- 54:13[SPEAKER_01]: but best ball.
- 54:14[SPEAKER_01]: And of course, now GAT links offers this fresh new way for you to look at fancy football and get people engaged in a way that you probably didn't have access to beforehand.
- 54:22[SPEAKER_01]: So I'll just try and plug that before I get on out of here.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: Yeah, that's all.
- 54:25[SPEAKER_00]: That's all good information.
- 54:27[SPEAKER_00]: Can you tell us where is it a fantasy life on the as a website that we can go to or social media that we can follow?
- 54:35[SPEAKER_00]: Can you plug it?
- 54:35[SPEAKER_01]: Yeah, fantasy life.com.
- 54:36[SPEAKER_01]: Check all the content out over there.
- 54:38[SPEAKER_01]: If you're interested any of my writings, of course, you can find me on Twitter at Chris Allen F or Twitter or X, whatever you call it.

- 54:47[SPEAKER_01]: And if you have any questions, don't hesitate to hit me up.
- 54:49[SPEAKER_00]: great.
- 54:50[SPEAKER_00]: Um, actually has any thing else that we need to run while Chris is here.
- 54:56[SPEAKER_02]: No, I just wanted to thank you for your time, Chris.
- 54:58[SPEAKER_02]: This is super helpful.
- 54:59[SPEAKER_02]: Hopefully for our viewers definitely for me.
- 55:02[SPEAKER_02]: But if I don't win my fantasy league now, I just want you to know that I'm personally, I'm going to let you know, Craig.
- 55:07[SPEAKER_02]: I'm hoping you personally responsible.
- 55:11[SPEAKER_01]: I understand that responsibility for coming on and talking about the forty-nine years in everybody else.
- 55:16[SPEAKER_01]: So completely understand if I wind up with an angry DM at some point throughout the season.
- 55:21[SPEAKER_00]: It just, it just, it just gets back on Twitter just for that one day.
- 55:25[SPEAKER_01]: Yes, for that one.
- 55:27[SPEAKER_01]: You told me not to draft you one, Jennings, and look at them.
- 55:32[SPEAKER_00]: Well, you know, from a, from a non-fansy football direction, we'll be super excited if John Jennings has another good season, I think, but which is, which is difficult.
- 55:41[SPEAKER_00]: But, all right, well Chris, thanks so much for joining us.
- 55:44[SPEAKER_00]: We appreciate your time and if you ever want to come back and chat with us about more things, just let us know.
