- 3:04Speaker 1: is National Letter to an elder Day today.
- 3:09Speaker 2: I love that. I love that weather.
- 3:12Speaker 1: We're looking at mild today thirty six, scattered snow showers tonight,
- 3:17Speaker 1: cloudy skies, a little bit of snow later twenty one tomorrow,
- 3:21Speaker 1: a messy morning commutes. We're looking at snow mixing in
- 3:25Speaker 1: with rain at times during the afternoon thirty nine tomorrow.
- 3:29Speaker 1: One to three inches is what they're saying at this point,
- 3:32Speaker 1: and a little bit of snow for the twenty fifth
- 3:34Speaker 1: Annual Freezing Fun for Families Winter Softball tournament. On Friday
- 3:40Speaker 1: is when it gets started. Snowshowers, early sunshine, later lower thirties,
- 3:46Speaker 1: not bad softball weather, and then weekends. At this point,
- 3:52Speaker 1: it looks like it's still gonna be a kind of
- 3:54Speaker 1: mile forty on Saturday, snow showers and colder on Sunday.
- 3:59Speaker 1: So we're gonna go from forty on Saturday to about
- 4:03Speaker 1: sixteen on Sunday. Is this the January thaw at the
- 4:08Speaker 1: end of February.
- 4:09Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 4:10Speaker 1: I think so Gosh, lots to get to. This morning
- 4:15Speaker 1: Facebook Question of the Day. A state senator in South
- 4:19Speaker 1: Carolina has introduced a bill aimed at protecting children from
- 4:23Speaker 1: the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. And this one has
- 4:27Speaker 1: started up a little bit. It would prohibit smoking in
- 4:31Speaker 1: vehicles when a child's under the age of twelve is present.
- 4:34Speaker 1: So obviously I'm asking you what say you about this?
- 4:38Speaker 1: It's the Facebook Question of the Day and it's up
- 4:41Speaker 1: there right now. Sports College Hoop March Madness starting up
- 4:46Speaker 1: with selection Sunday, March sixteenth on CBS. We got sixty
- 4:52Speaker 1: eight teams that are going to be playing this year
- 4:55Speaker 1: in the men's tournament alone, first four going to be
- 4:58Speaker 1: March eighteen. How exciting it's coming fast, Daly Dosafilga. This morning,
- 5:04Speaker 1: this nine year old kid in Staten Island, John Michael Pasquell,
- 5:11Speaker 1: had a stroke, almost died seventeen months later. He just
- 5:15Speaker 1: returned to school. Happened done monday, got a very very
- 5:21Speaker 1: big welcome. All of the kids and the teachers lined
- 5:23Speaker 1: the hallway and cheered him on. I've got the video
- 5:26Speaker 1: if you need a little dosep Fieldga this morning. It's
- 5:30Speaker 1: right there on the page Vermont and regional headlines from
- 5:34Speaker 1: cix PTZ digger. You know'm watching all of them. Barry
- 5:40Speaker 1: City Council voted unanimously last night in favor of a
- 5:46Speaker 1: new Department of Public Work scarage. The city manager, Nicholas
- 5:49Speaker 1: Starelli Castro, texted me this morning saying, I'm grateful for
- 5:54Speaker 1: the consul's unanimous support to purchase a new public workscarage.
- 5:59Speaker 1: A new public works garage has been on the to
- 6:01Speaker 1: do list for years, and last night we took the
- 6:05Speaker 1: first step towards a cost effective solution. I look forward
- 6:09Speaker 1: to the next step of the process, which will be
- 6:12Speaker 1: a hearing in front of the Very Town Planning Commission
- 6:14Speaker 1: on March nineteenth. What I'm looking forward to the most
- 6:19Speaker 1: after last night is showing up at the garage this
- 6:22Speaker 1: morning to tell the guys the good news. They deserve
- 6:27Speaker 1: so much better.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Wow. Love it.
- 6:31Speaker 1: Three arrested in Burlington after guns AMMO stolen from a
- 6:35Speaker 1: Colchester home. We've got these stories up on the page
- 6:38Speaker 1: this morning. Mediations are underway at the as the prison
- 6:42Speaker 1: protest continues in New York.
- 6:44Speaker 2: What a mass.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Meanwhile, the New York Senate shut down an attempt to
- 6:48Speaker 1: repeal the Halt Act. We have all of these stories.
- 6:53Speaker 1: The story on the Vermont mother who's toddler brought a
- 6:56Speaker 1: bag of cocaine to daycare, we have that story as well.
- 7:02Speaker 1: It's the first time I think I've heard that one.
- 7:05Speaker 1: The fugitive from Florida arrested in South Burlington a long
- 7:08Speaker 1: rap sheet of serious crimes. Police got them during a
- 7:11Speaker 1: traffic stop. So much for hiding out in the hills
- 7:14Speaker 1: of Vermont. Right, And the West Rutland teacher busted for dui.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Those stories, among others on the aired out page this morning.
- 7:23Speaker 1: One million federal workers in national headlines responded to the
- 7:29Speaker 1: email from Musk requesting an accounting of their work last week.
- 7:32Speaker 2: One million.
- 7:36Speaker 1: The House GOP passed their budget resolution. We have forty
- 7:42Speaker 1: percent of contracts canceled by Doze expected to produce no savings.
- 7:50Speaker 1: All of these stories are upon aired out this morning
- 7:53Speaker 1: if you want to read more details. Speaking of details,
- 7:57Speaker 1: there's new details in the suspect accused of fatally stabbing
- 8:02Speaker 1: four Idaho college students in Chicago. We have that Southwest
- 8:07Speaker 1: plane that aborted a landing to avoid a collision with
- 8:09Speaker 1: a private jet that entered the runway without authorization. Somebody
- 8:16Speaker 1: may not have a pilot's license anymore. One hundred and
- 8:19Speaker 1: twenty four confirmed measles cases in Texas, and of course
- 8:25Speaker 1: you probably saw this yesterday on your phone. Denny's and
- 8:28Speaker 1: several other restaurant chains are now adding egg surcharges. Surprised,
- 8:34Speaker 1: I'm not. Joanne Fabrics struggling in a major way recently.
- 8:40Speaker 1: They're now thrown in the towel. All six hundred stores
- 8:43Speaker 1: are going to be closing. The company will shut down
- 8:46Speaker 1: after eighty two years in business.
- 8:50Speaker 2: Unbelievable.
- 8:52Speaker 1: Brian Gallagher, who is the president and general manager and
- 8:58Speaker 1: just does everything for the Vermont Mountaineers, he is with
- 9:01Speaker 1: us this morning. I am so glad you're in here, buddy.
- 9:03Speaker 3: Thank you, Hey, thanks JD. Appreciate you having us on board.
- 9:06Speaker 3: And I know you remember those early days and we
- 9:08Speaker 3: started this whole thing.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I do, man, and it's like, but I was, I
- 9:13Speaker 1: was startled when you just told me that this has
- 9:17Speaker 1: been going on. The Mountaineers have been in existence for
- 9:20Speaker 1: twenty three years, and I remember the beginning with you.
- 9:25Speaker 3: Yeah. No, it's been a good run. The community has
- 9:27Speaker 3: wrapped its arms around the Mountaineers and the Central Vermont
- 9:31Speaker 3: in particular, and you know, the sponsors, the host families,
- 9:34Speaker 3: the volunteers you know, have just come out to support
- 9:38Speaker 3: us for many years, and the fans. So it's been
- 9:40Speaker 3: a good run and we're looking forward to another good
- 9:42Speaker 3: season where you know, new roster coming in. We have
- 9:45Speaker 3: a new coaching staff this year. Our former coach got
- 9:48Speaker 3: as they all do, they're trying to climb the ladder.
- 9:50Speaker 3: He got some good success with us, and now he's
- 9:53Speaker 3: at a school where he can't coach in the summer
- 9:55Speaker 3: anymore because he's full time recruiting for them. So it's
- 9:58Speaker 3: all good and we're we're looking forward to another season.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Tell us a little bit more about Kevin Smith.
- 10:03Speaker 3: Yeah, Kevin's our new coach. He's a former pro player.
- 10:08Speaker 3: He was he went to Stetson University down in Florida,
- 10:11Speaker 3: which is a big baseball school, was drafted. He's he's
- 10:15Speaker 3: an assistant coach for our former Mountaineer manager for many years,
- 10:18Speaker 3: Joe Brown, who won a championship for US in twenty fifteen.
- 10:22Speaker 3: He's he actually after nine to eleven went into the
- 10:25Speaker 3: military and became a military intelligence anti terrorism guy, and
- 10:29Speaker 3: he retired as a lieutenant colonel there. So he moved
- 10:32Speaker 3: his way up. Coaching baseball now in Courtland is his
- 10:37Speaker 3: retirement gig, and he just enjoys, you know, coming up,
- 10:41Speaker 3: he's going to bring a military background, run a tight
- 10:43Speaker 3: ship as well as a good background in baseball. And
- 10:46Speaker 3: he was a pitcher, so he'll work well with the
- 10:48Speaker 3: pitching staff.
- 10:49Speaker 1: So obviously I have many questions for your season passes
- 10:52Speaker 1: and tickets and what's new this year and bring it.
- 10:56Speaker 1: We're going to get to all of it. But man,
- 10:59Speaker 1: you just say to me off the air a little
- 11:01Speaker 1: while ago. Yeah, when we started this whole thing twenty
- 11:04Speaker 1: three years ago, I had a little bit more hair
- 11:06Speaker 1: on my head. You're one of the busiest guys that
- 11:11Speaker 1: I know. Busy people are successful people. What do you
- 11:15Speaker 1: do outside of the Mountaineers.
- 11:17Speaker 3: The other job which I enjoy I go to work
- 11:19Speaker 3: every day and enjoy is I teach at Montpuliar High School.
- 11:22Speaker 3: So it's been a great run. You know. I've been
- 11:24Speaker 3: there for a long time, and a long time I
- 11:27Speaker 3: hate to even say I but thirty three years. So
- 11:29Speaker 3: I've been well, I've been in the district thirty three years.
- 11:31Speaker 3: I've been at the high school since two thousand and six,
- 11:33Speaker 3: so it's been a great run. You know. I enjoy
- 11:37Speaker 3: going to work every day. Students keep me young and active,
- 11:40Speaker 3: and between that and doing the baseball after school and
- 11:44Speaker 3: all summer, that certainly is another fun gig. So wow,
- 11:49Speaker 3: it's been a good run.
- 11:50Speaker 1: So here we are twenty three years later and now
- 11:52Speaker 1: the second best league in the country.
- 11:57Speaker 3: Yeah, the ANYCBL has really grown over the year. Is
- 12:00Speaker 3: the Cape League will always probably be number one. They've
- 12:02Speaker 3: been around one hundred plus years, but we're right there
- 12:05Speaker 3: with them. You know, We've We've had two hundred and
- 12:07Speaker 3: thirty five players make it to Major League Baseball through
- 12:10Speaker 3: this league since nineteen ninety four, so that's a pretty
- 12:13Speaker 3: pretty good number. And that's just to the big leagues.
- 12:16Speaker 3: That doesn't say anything about the thousands that have made
- 12:18Speaker 3: it to pro baseball. So, you know, it's been a
- 12:21Speaker 3: fun thing. And we've in Mott Pelier, we've had twenty
- 12:25Speaker 3: four players make it to the major leagues just in time.
- 12:28Speaker 1: Because that really it's been a Yeah, you keeping tabs
- 12:31Speaker 1: on these guys and how they're doing.
- 12:32Speaker 3: We do. We I don't follow them as much as
- 12:35Speaker 3: I used to, just because there's getting to be so
- 12:37Speaker 3: many of them now and you lose track trying to
- 12:39Speaker 3: keep track of everything locally, but you know, we certainly
- 12:42Speaker 3: enjoyed the success they have. In fact, our first a
- 12:45Speaker 3: guy that played first back in two thousand and four
- 12:46Speaker 3: who was a major leaguer now just got hired as
- 12:49Speaker 3: a major league coach. So that's our first guy to
- 12:52Speaker 3: make it up into the coaching ranks for the Marlins,
- 12:54Speaker 3: which is going to be pretty exciting this year.
- 12:56Speaker 2: So isn't that amazing? Hey?
- 12:59Speaker 1: Six New England states is what any CBL is?
- 13:04Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 13:05Speaker 3: Yeah, there's thirteen teams and we're in every New England.
- 13:09Speaker 3: We're in all six New England states. You're right, correct,
- 13:11Speaker 3: it's them in every state. You know, We've got two
- 13:13Speaker 3: in Vermont, one in New Hampshire, one in Maine, and
- 13:17Speaker 3: the rest are in Connecticut, Rhode Island in Massachusetts. So
- 13:20Speaker 3: it's it's a pretty spread out league. You know, one's
- 13:23Speaker 3: in Martha's Vineyard. We have to take a ferry ride
- 13:25Speaker 3: over and back. Makes it today. No, they don't mind
- 13:29Speaker 3: the ride. It's for us. We do it as a
- 13:32Speaker 3: three day road trip. We'll go play in newport Wood
- 13:34Speaker 3: Island and Martha's Vineyard and we'll do other stops along
- 13:37Speaker 3: the way and then come back to Vermont. So they
- 13:39Speaker 3: take first class charter buses down and that's a league requirement,
- 13:43Speaker 3: and then they we put them up at hotels, they
- 13:45Speaker 3: play their games, and then they'll come back to Vermont.
- 13:48Speaker 3: So we kind of have that home home series as
- 13:50Speaker 3: well as the away So I just.
- 13:52Speaker 1: Heard you say the m Ward Maine, Yes, swamp Bats,
- 13:57Speaker 1: biggest riflery for the Mountaineers.
- 14:00Speaker 3: You know, the Keen Keen swamp Bats in Hampshire. They
- 14:03Speaker 3: used to be our biggest rival because they're about two
- 14:05Speaker 3: and a half hours away, but now we like to
- 14:08Speaker 3: think it's the Upper Valley Nighthawks down in you know,
- 14:12Speaker 3: they're right in state they're an hour down eighty nine,
- 14:15Speaker 3: and we certainly enjoy beating them. We have this Governor's Cup,
- 14:20Speaker 3: this Milk Jug, which we started when they came in
- 14:22Speaker 3: the league, and we've won it the last three years
- 14:25Speaker 3: knock on wood. We hope to continue to win that
- 14:27Speaker 3: and so that's probably our biggest in state rival. And
- 14:30Speaker 3: then we get into Keene and Sanford, Maine is definitely
- 14:33Speaker 3: a big one. They're a big rival as well. In fact,
- 14:36Speaker 3: they had a great team last year. They made it
- 14:38Speaker 3: to the championship round in lost in heartbreaking fashion to Newport,
- 14:42Speaker 3: which is also a team we like to beat. You know,
- 14:44Speaker 3: we've had them in the league for many years.
- 14:46Speaker 1: Is there a team that Brian Gallagher is maybe I
- 14:53Speaker 1: don't want to say nerfous, but maybe nerfous about this
- 14:58Speaker 1: coming season.
- 14:59Speaker 3: You know, it's every team does such a good job
- 15:01Speaker 3: recruiting now, so I I never take anybody lightly. I
- 15:05Speaker 3: think that they all do a good job. But you
- 15:07Speaker 3: always look at those teams that always seem to have
- 15:09Speaker 3: a good reputation like Newport. Keen Upper Valley always plays
- 15:13Speaker 3: us very hard. In fact, I think I always joke
- 15:16Speaker 3: that they'll they'll give up five game losses in a
- 15:19Speaker 3: row to put their best guy up against us when
- 15:21Speaker 3: we play us, trying to beat us that one game. Wow,
- 15:23Speaker 3: And you know what, we don't. We keep our rotation
- 15:25Speaker 3: the same and we play them and if we win,
- 15:27Speaker 3: we win. If we don't, we still hopefully win four
- 15:29Speaker 3: on five games that week. So gosh, but we we
- 15:32Speaker 3: definitely like to beat Upper Valley. We like to beat
- 15:35Speaker 3: Newport keen Uh. Newport Rhode Island always been a big rivalry.
- 15:39Speaker 3: We face them in the finals three times and uh
- 15:43Speaker 3: or four times actually, and we beat them twice. They
- 15:45Speaker 3: beat us twice, so that's always a good rivalry there.
- 15:47Speaker 1: So man, it's like when it starts warming up just
- 15:51Speaker 1: a tiny little bit.
- 15:52Speaker 3: Mm hm uh you.
- 15:54Speaker 1: Guys get I'm getting I'm guessing your you got the uh,
- 15:59Speaker 1: you got the the buzz.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Now, Yeah, spring training started and you know at this
- 16:03Speaker 3: point we look outside the window here and Barry and
- 16:05Speaker 3: the sun's out and there's some water on the sidewalk.
- 16:09Speaker 3: I don't see any snowbanks. So yes, water except when
- 16:12Speaker 3: it comes into rain delay. We don't like that too much. Right.
- 16:15Speaker 1: So when is the so the roster is complete? Yes,
- 16:21Speaker 1: when is the season officially going to start out.
- 16:23Speaker 3: June third is our first game down at Martha's Vineyard,
- 16:26Speaker 3: and we go down in Martha's Vineyard in Newport the
- 16:28Speaker 3: first two days, have a day off, and then we're
- 16:30Speaker 3: home on a June six for our home opener.
- 16:32Speaker 1: June six home opener. Yes, obviously, if you get on
- 16:36Speaker 1: the Mountaineers dot com.
- 16:39Speaker 3: Yeah, the Vermont Mountaineers dot com, we'll have everything from
- 16:42Speaker 3: baseball camps, to sponsorship packages, to the roster and all
- 16:46Speaker 3: the information on the team.
- 16:47Speaker 1: All right, I want to ask you about sponsorship opportunities.
- 16:52Speaker 1: There are many businesses that once they get their banner
- 16:56Speaker 1: on that fence, they don't want to take it off.
- 16:59Speaker 3: No, we've we've had a great run of sponsorship, and again,
- 17:02Speaker 3: the sponsorship is a big part of what we do.
- 17:04Speaker 3: If we don't have that, we can't pay the bus
- 17:06Speaker 3: bills and the umpire bills and everything else that comes out.
- 17:08Speaker 3: But sure, so we've had a lot of sponsors been
- 17:11Speaker 3: on boards in twenty three full years and many that
- 17:14Speaker 3: came on recently that don't want to give up that spot.
- 17:17Speaker 3: Once you get that billboard, a six x twelve billboard
- 17:19Speaker 3: on your outfield fence, right, not many places in front.
- 17:22Speaker 3: You can have a big advertisement like that. Sure, sure,
- 17:25Speaker 3: people don't like to give it up. We rarely have
- 17:27Speaker 3: turnover there. We do have a couple of spots this year.
- 17:30Speaker 3: I think it's been a tough year for some businesses.
- 17:32Speaker 3: But we do have a couple banners left if anybody
- 17:35Speaker 3: wants to call me, and the informations on the website
- 17:37Speaker 3: on how to get a hold of me. And we
- 17:40Speaker 3: do have a couple of game nights as well. Yeah,
- 17:43Speaker 3: throw out the first pitch, set up a table display,
- 17:46Speaker 3: you know, PA announcements, advertisement, all that stuff goes along
- 17:49Speaker 3: with it. And again, without the sponsorship packages, you know,
- 17:53Speaker 3: the Mountaineers wouldn't be in operation. And it's a nonprofit
- 17:57Speaker 3: five oh one C three, we're really dependent on that.
- 17:59Speaker 1: So we have the Vermont Coyotes, the VT Coyotes that
- 18:04Speaker 1: are tuned in this morning watching and listening to you.
- 18:08Speaker 1: This isn't a really exciting time for some big time
- 18:12Speaker 1: sports right here in our backyard.
- 18:14Speaker 2: Yeah it is.
- 18:15Speaker 3: Fun and you know, I certainly like to watch when
- 18:18Speaker 3: the frost Teas were here, you know, many years ago,
- 18:20Speaker 3: and you know have the Mountaineers and the frost Seeds
- 18:23Speaker 3: now the Coyotes back in the same neighborhood. It's kind
- 18:25Speaker 3: of exciting to see and you know, being in person
- 18:28Speaker 3: that likes basketball, I look forward to helping welcoming them
- 18:31Speaker 3: to the community as well.
- 18:32Speaker 1: How can I want to ask you about season passes,
- 18:35Speaker 1: but how can folks who are for whatever reason unfortunately
- 18:41Speaker 1: not able to get out to the ballpark. They want
- 18:43Speaker 1: to see a show. They're following the Mountaineers, maybe maybe
- 18:46Speaker 1: they're away, maybe for whatever reason. Yes, it's ESPN Plus.
- 18:53Speaker 3: Yeah, we've been fortunate. Is the number two league in
- 18:56Speaker 3: the whole country now, just behind the Cape and the
- 18:58Speaker 3: number one highest rank baseball team and summer baseball in Vermont.
- 19:03Speaker 3: We get a lot of attention, and the league is
- 19:05Speaker 3: going to have probably two hundred games broadcasts this year.
- 19:09Speaker 3: We're gonna have about fifty percent of our home games
- 19:11Speaker 3: broadcast and many of our away games. So ESPN Plus
- 19:14Speaker 3: is picking up that we've got four cameras of theirs
- 19:17Speaker 3: down at the ballpark, and every game, even if it's
- 19:20Speaker 3: not on ESPN, has four camera angles and we broadcast
- 19:23Speaker 3: that on the website. So good chance for people to
- 19:25Speaker 3: follow us home and away. And every game in the
- 19:28Speaker 3: league is on the air. And what about huddle. That
- 19:32Speaker 3: is actually the ones that pick up the broadcast at
- 19:34Speaker 3: ESPN doesn't so anytime they don't compete too much. But
- 19:38Speaker 3: whenever ESPN wants the game, they get it and the
- 19:41Speaker 3: rest go onto the league website. So that's through the
- 19:44Speaker 3: huddle system.
- 19:45Speaker 1: I want to ask you about volunteering. I also want
- 19:49Speaker 1: to ask you if you need camera operators.
- 19:51Speaker 3: Definitely do camera operators we like to have. We have
- 19:54Speaker 3: four cameras all the time, and we'd like to train
- 19:57Speaker 3: about ten to twelve people to do that so that
- 19:59Speaker 3: when some but he wants to take a night off,
- 20:01Speaker 3: it's a pretty smooth transition and we have somebody that
- 20:05Speaker 3: is there every night running the operation war As you know,
- 20:08Speaker 3: that's a tricky thing with four cameras, you've got to
- 20:10Speaker 3: kind of make sure that's going the way that ESPN
- 20:13Speaker 3: wants it and the graphics. We have that covered. We
- 20:16Speaker 3: have our broadcaster coming from Penn State, and we certainly
- 20:20Speaker 3: have always the need for volunteers. Volunteers are the backbone
- 20:24Speaker 3: of the organization for game nights, parking, folks, tickets, concessions.
- 20:29Speaker 3: We always need volunteers and there's a place to reach
- 20:31Speaker 3: out for us on the website host families. Yeah, you know,
- 20:35Speaker 3: we always need host families.
- 20:37Speaker 2: You know.
- 20:38Speaker 3: Right now we've got about thirty seven of the forty
- 20:40Speaker 3: players placed, which is amazing this time of year. So
- 20:43Speaker 3: we're down to the last few host families. And they
- 20:45Speaker 3: get a lot of perks. They get season tickets and
- 20:47Speaker 3: kids go to baseball camp for free and just fun
- 20:50Speaker 3: to be part of the organization and follow these guys
- 20:52Speaker 3: as they go on to bigger and better things. A
- 20:55Speaker 3: lot of these host families, you know, will follow these
- 20:57Speaker 3: guys and go check out their major league debut when
- 20:59Speaker 3: they make it.
- 21:00Speaker 1: All right, So it's host families at the Vermont Mountaineers
- 21:05Speaker 1: dot com.
- 21:05Speaker 2: We need three more three more beds.
- 21:07Speaker 3: Yeah, we certainly. We always take extra names and stuff
- 21:11Speaker 3: just in case something opens up during the year, you know.
- 21:13Speaker 1: And we should say these guys are really serious about
- 21:19Speaker 1: what they do. They are held to very high standards.
- 21:26Speaker 1: So if you host one of these guys, it's not
- 21:28Speaker 1: like they're going to be stumbling in at two o'clock
- 21:30Speaker 1: in the morning. No, you know, they're just not these
- 21:33Speaker 1: these type of guyes.
- 21:35Speaker 3: Yeah, most of these guys are on scholarship at their
- 21:37Speaker 3: college and their whole thing is like to get out
- 21:39Speaker 3: there and prove themselves and get scouted and go to
- 21:42Speaker 3: the next level. So they take it seriously. If they
- 21:45Speaker 3: do get home at two o'clock in the morning, it's
- 21:47Speaker 3: usually because we're playing down in Rhode Island. Then we
- 21:50Speaker 3: got to drive back and they get off the bus
- 21:52Speaker 3: at two in the morning. But they can. They got
- 21:54Speaker 3: their own cars, they don't have to transport them. They
- 21:56Speaker 3: got their own cell phones. They're pretty independent, and we
- 21:59Speaker 3: feed them a lot of the time. I'm for home
- 22:00Speaker 3: and away, so it's a fun gig for families.
- 22:04Speaker 1: So ten to eleven weeks or so from June through
- 22:08Speaker 1: August is.
- 22:10Speaker 3: Yeah, our end of typically if we finish about the
- 22:12Speaker 3: twelfth of August, if we make it all the way
- 22:14Speaker 3: to the finals, which is our goal every year, and
- 22:16Speaker 3: we could get done at the very early week first
- 22:19Speaker 3: week of August if we don't, but hopefully that's the
- 22:22Speaker 3: cases we play on through.
- 22:23Speaker 1: You do so much for these guys you just mentioned.
- 22:28Speaker 1: You know, you got to feed a whole team too.
- 22:32Speaker 1: I can only imagine what I want to obviously transition
- 22:36Speaker 1: into more into volunteering, how essential it is, because I
- 22:40Speaker 1: can only imagine what the budget is.
- 22:43Speaker 3: Yeah, we We have to deal with about three hundred
- 22:45Speaker 3: thousand dollars in budget every year, and you know, some
- 22:47Speaker 3: of that is ticket money and souvenir sales and concessions,
- 22:52Speaker 3: but there's a lot of it through sponsorship and fundraising
- 22:56Speaker 3: as well. And we have a good team too. We
- 22:58Speaker 3: have a board of twelve people that work here. Around
- 23:00Speaker 3: twelve months of the year, we're meeting, we're doing committee meetings.
- 23:04Speaker 3: You know, I go down to the league meetings every
- 23:06Speaker 3: other month in person. It's a year round operation and
- 23:10Speaker 3: it has to be. We've got a lot of people
- 23:11Speaker 3: that really do the the big part of the work
- 23:15Speaker 3: in the off season as well as game nights.
- 23:17Speaker 1: So all right, any more opportunities for volunteering that you
- 23:23Speaker 1: can think of, I mean there's I'm guessing there's quite
- 23:27Speaker 1: a few.
- 23:28Speaker 3: There's a lot everything that you can think of at
- 23:30Speaker 3: the ballpark from you know, we have a music person
- 23:32Speaker 3: that's up there, but occasionally they need a night off,
- 23:35Speaker 3: so training somebody to do the PA, somebody to do
- 23:37Speaker 3: the music and the sound effects in between batters, parking, concessions, tickets,
- 23:44Speaker 3: the whole nine yards, working in the souvenir booth. So
- 23:47Speaker 3: there's a lot of chances for people to come down.
- 23:49Speaker 3: And again, without the volunteers and the host families, we
- 23:53Speaker 3: wouldn't have an operation. So we really need people to
- 23:55Speaker 3: come out.
- 23:55Speaker 1: And check in with There is absolutely nothing better than
- 24:01Speaker 1: getting over to the ballpark recreation field in Monthfilier right
- 24:05Speaker 1: there on Route twelve on a summer night. Grab a
- 24:09Speaker 1: cold drink, sit down, maybe a hot dog, some ice cream,
- 24:13Speaker 1: get with the family and just sit back and relax
- 24:17Speaker 1: and watch a local game. What I love about going
- 24:21Speaker 1: is that there's constant engagement. There's constant movement. There, there's
- 24:27Speaker 1: no lag time. You are always being entertained either with
- 24:31Speaker 1: your eyes or your ears.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Yeah, it's fun. You know the on field games. Kevin
- 24:36Speaker 3: does a great job with the on field games, and
- 24:38Speaker 3: the mascot does an incredible job. He's rollerblading behind the
- 24:42Speaker 3: Cody Chevrolet car. He's got the we got the Skipmobile,
- 24:45Speaker 3: which is an old nineteen sixty nine Volkswagen then made
- 24:48Speaker 3: into an old dune buggy and we have it road registered.
- 24:52Speaker 3: And you know, it's just it's always fun and there's
- 24:54Speaker 3: always activity. And like you said, the kids are there,
- 24:56Speaker 3: they're getting autographs from the players, they're you know, they're
- 25:00Speaker 3: chasing down foul balls to keep and it's just a
- 25:03Speaker 3: fun family environment for multi generational of people.
- 25:06Speaker 1: So who I want to talk about some of your
- 25:09Speaker 1: theme nights, because you guys bring in sure, frankly everyone
- 25:14Speaker 1: that's anyone in our community, from the Scouts to the
- 25:18Speaker 1: area businesses volunteer, just nonprofits and they always throw out
- 25:23Speaker 1: the first pitch and you guys really do such a
- 25:28Speaker 1: great job shining the spotlight on them.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Well, thanks, appreciate it, Jadi. No, we try to. We
- 25:33Speaker 3: have every night the fifty to fifty goes to a
- 25:36Speaker 3: different nonprofit.
- 25:37Speaker 2: Wow.
- 25:37Speaker 3: So that money, you know, it goes right back into
- 25:39Speaker 3: the community. The Mountaineers don't keep any of that. It
- 25:41Speaker 3: goes right back into the Little Leagues, the you know,
- 25:45Speaker 3: the food bank, whatever happens to be the charity of
- 25:48Speaker 3: the night, you know, and that's a big thing. Each
- 25:50Speaker 3: night we've got a sponsor thrown out a first pitch.
- 25:52Speaker 3: Most nights we have themes going on, like we'll have
- 25:55Speaker 3: the Little League night, We'll have the free buzz cut night,
- 25:58Speaker 3: which you can see gets a little along on the side.
- 26:00Speaker 3: It might need to get it shaved off again, but
- 26:03Speaker 3: it's always fun stuff and it's you know, kind of
- 26:05Speaker 3: like typical minor league baseball where you've got something fun
- 26:09Speaker 3: going on for everybody every night. That's the intent.
- 26:12Speaker 1: So now when you say buzz cut, does it like,
- 26:15Speaker 1: does it have to does it have to be.
- 26:17Speaker 3: A buzz you know, it's one of those deals where
- 26:20Speaker 3: I'm not sure people are down there looking for a
- 26:21Speaker 3: little bit off the side. They get they get the
- 26:24Speaker 3: barber down there, you know, and they take care of
- 26:26Speaker 3: business real quickly, so as you can see from my
- 26:29Speaker 3: haircut that they've been there a few times, right, don't
- 26:31Speaker 3: need to have a lot of work done on the side, So.
- 26:33Speaker 1: I want to make sure you're getting everything that you
- 26:36Speaker 1: got sure out on the airways because we there's so
- 26:40Speaker 1: many of us that just love the Vermont Mountaineers.
- 26:43Speaker 3: Man, No, we appreciate that. And again it's the support
- 26:46Speaker 3: we've had over the years from the community makes this
- 26:49Speaker 3: all possible, and it makes it fun to really get
- 26:51Speaker 3: excited about doing it every year, you know, just to
- 26:53Speaker 3: kind of see what it looks like. Is February is
- 26:56Speaker 3: not the most fun. You we're out fundraising, but that's
- 26:58Speaker 3: why you're in here, man. But once we get to
- 27:01Speaker 3: the summer and it's June and July to go down
- 27:03Speaker 3: to the ballpark and kind of look around and see
- 27:04Speaker 3: fireworks and all kinds of fun stuff happening at the
- 27:08Speaker 3: park and giving these players and coaches a chance to
- 27:10Speaker 3: work their way up, and then following them as they
- 27:13Speaker 3: move on to bigger and better things down the road
- 27:15Speaker 3: and watch them on TV. It's just a pretty cool thing.
- 27:18Speaker 1: So if you're just joining us president and general manager
- 27:22Speaker 1: of the Vermont Mountaineers right here in central Vermont, when
- 27:25Speaker 1: we hear the name Brian Gallagher, that's what we think of.
- 27:28Speaker 1: We think of the Vermont Mountaineers. And when I hear
- 27:32Speaker 1: the words Vermont Mountaineers, I'm thinking of Warmer weather Man
- 27:35Speaker 1: because it's I just love it.
- 27:38Speaker 2: Man. You know, I got to tell you I went.
- 27:40Speaker 1: I think it was two summers ago when my little
- 27:43Speaker 1: girl was.
- 27:45Speaker 2: Starting to play softball and baseball.
- 27:48Speaker 3: And.
- 27:51Speaker 1: I've never really, I've never really filowed baseball, enjoyed going
- 27:58Speaker 1: out for the experience it, but to finally sit and
- 28:04Speaker 1: I've said the sun on the air before it finally
- 28:06Speaker 1: sit down and pay attention to what's going on and anticipating, well,
- 28:13Speaker 1: if this happens, then what's that guy going to do
- 28:15Speaker 1: what's this? You know, how is how could this scenario
- 28:20Speaker 1: play out?
- 28:20Speaker 3: Right?
- 28:21Speaker 2: And if you're.
- 28:21Speaker 1: Really able to focus on that, what a fascinating game?
- 28:28Speaker 2: You could chew all your fingernails.
- 28:30Speaker 3: Yeah, it's it's exciting baseball. And the coaches like to
- 28:33Speaker 3: play a little small ball. You know, they'll steal bases,
- 28:35Speaker 3: they'll do a hit and run, so there's always something happening.
- 28:38Speaker 3: And uh yeah, it really is, you know, close to
- 28:41Speaker 3: the year, close to the action down there. It's not
- 28:43Speaker 3: like I mean, I love going to Fenway. Obviously you're
- 28:46Speaker 3: going to a major league game, but it costs so
- 28:47Speaker 3: much money to do that. You know, down here it's local.
- 28:50Speaker 3: It's inexpensive. The whole family can come out for a
- 28:53Speaker 3: really cheap price. And you can watch these guys before
- 28:56Speaker 3: they make it to Fenway, close up close, and you
- 28:58Speaker 3: talk to them, you get to know them. You see
- 29:00Speaker 3: them for the summer. Yeah, the kids follow them, they
- 29:03Speaker 3: collect their baseball cards, they get autographs. It's just you know,
- 29:06Speaker 3: you don't even have to be a baseball fan. It's
- 29:07Speaker 3: all about the community. So again, it's a community activity.
- 29:12Speaker 3: It's hard to remember back in the day when the
- 29:14Speaker 3: Mountaineers weren't here. You know, thunder Road is great, and
- 29:17Speaker 3: that's one night a week, but you know mountaineers will
- 29:20Speaker 3: be home three or four nights a week, so you've
- 29:22Speaker 3: got more opportunities in the summer to kind of do that,
- 29:24Speaker 3: you know, and go out and have fun with the family.
- 29:26Speaker 1: Your your promotion is massive. When you guys are going
- 29:33Speaker 1: to have a game, your signs, your your lawn signs
- 29:38Speaker 1: are everywhere. Game this Tuesday night, game, Saturday night. I
- 29:43Speaker 1: mean it's like anyone who's driving down the road anywhere
- 29:46Speaker 1: in Central from honest, is going to see those signs.
- 29:48Speaker 3: Yeah. I think that's one of our better things. And
- 29:51Speaker 3: when we need host families, those little signs go up
- 29:53Speaker 3: post families needed, volunteers needed, and I think that does
- 29:55Speaker 3: help us. And people see the number over and over again.
- 29:58Speaker 3: I think they're gonna hopefully come down and see what's
- 30:00Speaker 3: going on, see what the excitement's about.
- 30:02Speaker 1: So you mentioned the kids get to these players are approachable,
- 30:08Speaker 1: They get to sign autographs for the kids. Sometimes it's
- 30:12Speaker 1: a it's a baseball or or a hat or whatever,
- 30:15Speaker 1: but also baseball cards. And you gave me a few here.
- 30:19Speaker 1: This is really cool. Look at this shrink wrapped and
- 30:22Speaker 1: everything right here. That's so cool.
- 30:25Speaker 3: Yeah, it's nice the kid we print, We print those
- 30:27Speaker 3: and we give them out at the ballpark. And again
- 30:30Speaker 3: it's fun because the players like them, the kids like them.
- 30:33Speaker 3: They collect them, they get them signed, and you know,
- 30:36Speaker 3: many of these guys move on to big leagues. You know,
- 30:38Speaker 3: we've had two first round draft picks. We've had guys
- 30:40Speaker 3: that have won World Series, like Aj Pollock, he's been
- 30:43Speaker 3: an All Star. You know, he's uh, he's now retired,
- 30:46Speaker 3: but he's coaching now. And again it's like pretty cool
- 30:49Speaker 3: that these guys kind of remember their roots too, Like
- 30:52Speaker 3: we'll keep in touch with them. They'll you know, they'll
- 30:54Speaker 3: get in the program. We'll send them copies of the
- 30:56Speaker 3: programs every year. You know, we send them a text
- 30:59Speaker 3: message when they have a great game. And again it's
- 31:01Speaker 3: a good thing to they they remember where they kind of.
- 31:04Speaker 2: Their roots were. So can they do they come back
- 31:07Speaker 2: ever and catch a game?
- 31:08Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, we've had some guys like Rob Delaney
- 31:11Speaker 3: came back a couple of years ago, retired from baseball,
- 31:13Speaker 3: came back, he signed photos and met the fans and
- 31:16Speaker 3: you know, came out through a first pitch out. You know,
- 31:19Speaker 3: we've had some great promotions over the years, and as
- 31:21Speaker 3: more of these guys do retire, we'll bring them back,
- 31:23Speaker 3: and I think they just enjoy it, you know, they
- 31:25Speaker 3: come back many years later and kind of like, hey,
- 31:29Speaker 3: this was a fun summer, you know.
- 31:30Speaker 1: Yeah, tell me about some of the championships that the
- 31:35Speaker 1: Mountaineers have won.
- 31:37Speaker 3: Sure, yeah, Yeah, we've got some memorable ones. We've won
- 31:40Speaker 3: in two thousand and six, two thousand and seven, back
- 31:43Speaker 3: to back years. We won in twenty fifteen, and we've
- 31:47Speaker 3: been runners up three different occasions two thousand and five, nine,
- 31:51Speaker 3: and boy, there's one more, I believe, but I think
- 31:55Speaker 3: it was just about a few years ago, twenty twenty three,
- 31:58Speaker 3: I believe. So, you know, it's like you work so
- 32:00Speaker 3: hard with thirteen teams to try to get there. It's
- 32:02Speaker 3: tough to win it, and it's tough to get there,
- 32:05Speaker 3: but that's our goal every year, you know, we want
- 32:07Speaker 3: to try to do as as well as we can.
- 32:09Speaker 1: Yeah, let's talk about SKIP and of course Kevin Clark,
- 32:15Speaker 1: who is I don't know what Kevin's title is, but
- 32:17Speaker 1: MC whatever, he is outstanding.
- 32:20Speaker 3: Yeah, he does a good job running those on field
- 32:22Speaker 3: games with the mic and geting some different different games
- 32:25Speaker 3: in there and keeping the kids excited. And yeah, it's
- 32:28Speaker 3: good to have him on board. And he's been there
- 32:30Speaker 3: for a number of years. And we have so many
- 32:32Speaker 3: other volunteers. I hate to even mention but one by name,
- 32:35Speaker 3: because it's like, as soon as you mentioned one, there's
- 32:37Speaker 3: fifteen to twenty more that I should be so but yeah,
- 32:40Speaker 3: every part of that organization, you know, to get people
- 32:43Speaker 3: in there, and if they're there every night, that's great.
- 32:46Speaker 3: If they're there six games, it's great. You know, we
- 32:48Speaker 3: try to rotate people in and out so people don't
- 32:50Speaker 3: get burned out on it. But no, it's a it's
- 32:53Speaker 3: a fun thing to be a part of, and we
- 32:54Speaker 3: always look for more people that want to kind of
- 32:56Speaker 3: join them. Mountain your Family.
- 32:57Speaker 1: I love the fact that, like you said, the on
- 33:01Speaker 1: field games, there's constant in baseball. Let's be honest. There's
- 33:06Speaker 1: a good good number of pauses, sure, but you've got
- 33:09Speaker 1: constant entertainment going on. I mean, the second that you
- 33:12Speaker 1: need it, there's an on field game going on with
- 33:15Speaker 1: kids that are pulled out of the stands there.
- 33:17Speaker 2: It's so much fun.
- 33:18Speaker 3: It is fun. It's a good thing to be a
- 33:20Speaker 3: part of another team. In Central Vermont. I have to
- 33:22Speaker 3: give a plug too, is the Montpelier boys basketball team
- 33:26Speaker 3: that's won four straight championships and I know they're going
- 33:28Speaker 3: for the fifth here yes next week and we hope
- 33:31Speaker 3: they get the very odd. But that's been a fun
- 33:33Speaker 3: team to watch over the last six years. They lost
- 33:36Speaker 3: one by a point at the buzzer at the odd
- 33:38Speaker 3: and then they've won four straight nineteen and one this year,
- 33:41Speaker 3: and I'm looking forward to going to their games later
- 33:44Speaker 3: this week to see how they do. But it's having
- 33:47Speaker 3: those kids in school and it's fun to watch them.
- 33:49Speaker 3: And I know the Montpelier and Nordic team just won
- 33:52Speaker 3: their first ever state championship yesterday, which again, congrats to them.
- 33:57Speaker 1: So wow, the level of tensity in our local high
- 34:01Speaker 1: school sports is really impressive. I mean, remember the pitcher
- 34:10Speaker 1: I can't think of which it might have been You
- 34:12Speaker 1: thirty two who was so so good and did go
- 34:15Speaker 1: down to Pennsylvania.
- 34:16Speaker 3: Yeah, Owen Kellington, he pitched at You thirty two and yeah,
- 34:20Speaker 3: he's with the Pirates organization now and again he kind
- 34:23Speaker 3: of grew up at the field. He was in baseball
- 34:25Speaker 3: camps with us back in the day, and he's he
- 34:27Speaker 3: goes down there even now in the off season and throws,
- 34:31Speaker 3: you know, when his team is done, he is down
- 34:33Speaker 3: there with his dad throwing baseballs and pitching, and so yeah,
- 34:36Speaker 3: we hope, hope he does well. And again it's a
- 34:38Speaker 3: long process to get from high school ball up to
- 34:42Speaker 3: the major leagues, but you have to go through about
- 34:44Speaker 3: six levels and you just keep climbing the ladder until you,
- 34:46Speaker 3: hopefully you make it.
- 34:47Speaker 1: So coming out of high school, if you want to
- 34:50Speaker 1: be part of ANYCBO, you've got to go to college
- 34:52Speaker 1: and you're held to a high standard of having some
- 34:56Speaker 1: pretty decent grades.
- 34:57Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, The thing with the NEC is a college
- 35:01Speaker 3: level league, and some leagues I know do allow high
- 35:04Speaker 3: school players to play in him. I know the Lake
- 35:06Speaker 3: Monsters with the Futures League does that. The Major League
- 35:10Speaker 3: Baseball has asked us in the Cape to not do that,
- 35:13Speaker 3: and we're really focused on getting those top tier college
- 35:15Speaker 3: players that are going to be draft prospects, and we
- 35:18Speaker 3: always try to get a Vermont or in there too,
- 35:20Speaker 3: because we we want a kid that's if he's capable
- 35:23Speaker 3: of playing, and the kids from Vermont, we want to
- 35:25Speaker 3: give them the first shot like you would have given
- 35:27Speaker 3: owen a shot to play here, but again he had
- 35:29Speaker 3: to have gone to Yukon, which was his other option,
- 35:32Speaker 3: either Yukon or go to the draft. He went and
- 35:33Speaker 3: got drafted at a high level and then went on
- 35:36Speaker 3: to the to pro ball, which was a smart move,
- 35:38Speaker 3: I think, because when you get drafted in the sixth round,
- 35:41Speaker 3: I think it was you know, you get a little
- 35:42Speaker 3: signing bonus and make your way up a little bit
- 35:45Speaker 3: quicker than some of those guys that are getting drafted
- 35:47Speaker 3: in the twenty fifth round for sure.
- 35:49Speaker 2: So yeah, that was big news right here.
- 35:51Speaker 3: Yeah, he's a good player.
- 35:52Speaker 1: God, So we go an ECBL. Next stop would be
- 35:58Speaker 1: the minor leagues.
- 35:59Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, the Cape in the NECBL. Typically when you
- 36:02Speaker 3: get drafted any any league, you'll get drafted, you'll go
- 36:05Speaker 3: into minor league baseball and then you know, short season,
- 36:07Speaker 3: a long season A eventually double A triple A, and
- 36:10Speaker 3: then the big league. So you do have to climb
- 36:12Speaker 3: that ladder. And some players, you know, the first round
- 36:15Speaker 3: guys that we had, got a quick trip up to
- 36:17Speaker 3: the big leagues. You know, they're in the minor leagues
- 36:19Speaker 3: for maybe two years, three years and then side tuck it. Yeah,
- 36:22Speaker 3: so triple a. Was it used to be the past Socks.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Now it's in Worcester, the Worcester Worcester Socks or Worcester
- 36:27Speaker 3: So yeah, they're but again that's something that, yeah, that's
- 36:32Speaker 3: their goal. Many of these kids will make it. Some
- 36:35Speaker 3: of them won't, but you know, they're at that level
- 36:36Speaker 3: where they're really giving it their best shot.
- 36:38Speaker 2: So and has a Mountaineer made it to the majors.
- 36:42Speaker 3: Yeah, we've had twenty six or seven guys make it
- 36:45Speaker 3: to the.
- 36:45Speaker 2: Major league, So the ones you were talking about earlier.
- 36:47Speaker 3: Yeah, and several more, you know, obviously hundreds more that
- 36:50Speaker 3: have made it to pro ball that just didn't get there.
- 36:52Speaker 3: They may have gotten a double or triple a and
- 36:54Speaker 3: had the end of their line at that point. But uh,
- 36:56Speaker 3: you know what's pretty cool though, is we've had one
- 36:59Speaker 3: broadcaster make it to the major leagues. Our first guy
- 37:01Speaker 3: in two thousand and three, Tim Haggerty made it up
- 37:03Speaker 3: with the Royals, and we have, you know, three other
- 37:08Speaker 3: players that were former players make it to the front office,
- 37:11Speaker 3: you know, at a major league club, you know, in
- 37:14Speaker 3: one level of the other, you know. So it is
- 37:16Speaker 3: pretty exciting to see not only the players make it,
- 37:19Speaker 3: but some of these guys make it when they're playing
- 37:20Speaker 3: careers over they go into the front office or they
- 37:23Speaker 3: go into coaching world and make it there. And we
- 37:26Speaker 3: have many many former Mountain your players that are coaching
- 37:28Speaker 3: college baseball now, which for me it's nice because I
- 37:31Speaker 3: can call them up and they know who we are
- 37:33Speaker 3: and they're like, yeah, we'll send you a couple of
- 37:34Speaker 3: our best players and they know what they what they're
- 37:37Speaker 3: getting into. So that's that's helps.
- 37:39Speaker 1: It's incredible. The Vermont Mountaineers dot com is the page
- 37:46Speaker 1: to learn about sponsorship opportunities. All the packages are right there,
- 37:50Speaker 1: season passes.
