- 1:00:00Welcome to Inside West Palm Beach. I'm
- 1:00:03Gerry Marcelo. Everybody that calls South
- 1:00:05Florida home knows this drill. Hurricane
- 1:00:08season is around the corner and it's
- 1:00:10time to prepare. Some folks take it to
- 1:00:13heart while some don't, but there's no
- 1:00:15ignoring the fact that being prepared
- 1:00:17makes dealing with a storm easier and
- 1:00:19less stressful. It also improves your
- 1:00:22chances of getting through the storm
- 1:00:23with minimal impact to both your home and
- 1:00:26to your family. Today we're going to
- 1:00:28talk about what you really need to be
- 1:00:30ready should a storm come our way. That's
- 1:00:32next on Inside West Palm Beach.
- 1:00:44Joining us today is Assistant Fire Chief
- 1:00:46Brent Bloomfield. Brent, welcome to the
- 1:00:48show. Thank you, Jerry. You know, along
- 1:00:50with your job as Assistant Fire Chief,
- 1:00:53you're also very closely aligned to
- 1:00:56emergency management for the city. Yeah,
- 1:00:58so I am the emergency manager for the
- 1:01:00city, so that means anything that
- 1:01:02happens in the city that's large-scale
- 1:01:03across all departments in the city that
- 1:01:06falls under my purview. So not just storm
- 1:01:09preparation, but just preparation
- 1:01:11for big events, if there's a music event
- 1:01:14or... Yeah, so all of those
- 1:01:15things, you know, in the last seven years
- 1:01:18it's not just been storms. You know, we
- 1:01:20had an emergency with... we had water, we
- 1:01:23had blue-green algae in the water. We
- 1:01:24had to stand up for that. We had, of
- 1:01:26course, COVID. You know, we were stood
- 1:01:28up for two years for that. We had some
- 1:01:29protests in the city. We help out
- 1:01:31constantly with, as you know, President
- 1:01:34Trump flies in and out,
- 1:01:35and they can carry visits. We help with
- 1:01:37that with Secret Service and the FBI.
- 1:01:39On top of that, we do about 175 community
- 1:01:41events a year where we write incident
- 1:01:43action plans, and we have the second or
- 1:01:47third, depending on who you talk to,
- 1:01:48the largest boat show in the world now
- 1:01:49here on our
- 1:01:50waterfront. On top of that, we
- 1:01:52have music festivals that are constantly
- 1:01:54wanting to come here. We're getting new
- 1:01:56ones every single day. This weekend, for
- 1:01:59instance, we have the Collegiate PGA
- 1:02:00Championship at our golf course that
- 1:02:02we're having to deal with. So we do a
- 1:02:04lot in our office. Wow, and it just goes
- 1:02:06to show how involved
- 1:02:08things are here in West
- 1:02:10Palm. This is not just some sleepy little
- 1:02:12town like it may have been 20, 25 years
- 1:02:14ago. There is activities on a national,
- 1:02:17if not global scale that you've got to
- 1:02:19deal with. Yeah, so every single week it
- 1:02:21seems like something new is coming, but
- 1:02:22the city has grown in leaps and bounds.
- 1:02:25It's something that, you know, we take
- 1:02:26seriously. I grew up here, so I've
- 1:02:28watched it, you know, get bigger, and on
- 1:02:30top of that, I've been working here for
- 1:02:3226 years, so I've
- 1:02:33seen it grow since then.
- 1:02:34You know, I was here before City Place
- 1:02:36was here, so now that you see what's
- 1:02:38going on there and all the high-rises
- 1:02:40coming up, it's something that we have to
- 1:02:41deal with constantly. The amount of
- 1:02:43change, and you've seen it all.
- 1:02:45Tremendous, and I've seen it all since
- 1:02:461977 I've been here. And during
- 1:02:49that period of time, you've also seen
- 1:02:50your share of storm threats and storms.
- 1:02:54Yeah, so we've had several storms that
- 1:02:56have made landfall,
- 1:02:57Irma, Nicole. We've had,
- 1:02:59we've been sideswiped by several storms.
- 1:03:01We had Dorian sitting off our coast for,
- 1:03:03I remember that one. You know, for 20
- 1:03:04hours, and that was, we
- 1:03:06were, you know, so worried
- 1:03:07about that one, but yeah, it's just
- 1:03:09constant. There's always things going on.
- 1:03:11It's funny because my predecessor, who
- 1:03:14was here, nine years he was
- 1:03:15here, and he didn't get, he
- 1:03:17didn't have one activation in nine years.
- 1:03:20I think they were saving
- 1:03:20him all up for whatever I came
- 1:03:22here. So yeah, we've had a lot of
- 1:03:24activations in the last seven years. Now,
- 1:03:26we're hearing vibes and
- 1:03:28forecasts indicating that it may be a
- 1:03:31quieter season, but that does not
- 1:03:34minimize the need for
- 1:03:35us to prepare. Is that right? That's
- 1:03:37correct. So I was here in
- 1:03:371992, whenever we had Hurricane
- 1:03:40Andrew bearing down on us, similar exact
- 1:03:43setup. We had an El Nino,
- 1:03:46strong El Nino, expected to
- 1:03:48have low, you know, a season was going to
- 1:03:50be a low level season and oh yeah,
- 1:03:51everybody was talking
- 1:03:52about it. And, you know, we didn't have
- 1:03:55our A storm until August.
- 1:03:57Wow. It just happened to be
- 1:03:58Andrew. So it only takes one. It takes
- 1:04:01two. So you really need to be
- 1:04:02prepared regardless. I think
- 1:04:04we've gotten a lot better since 1992.
- 1:04:07Building codes have gotten a
- 1:04:07lot better. Preparation has
- 1:04:09gotten a lot better. In 2004 and 2005,
- 1:04:12when we had all the storms,
- 1:04:13you know, we didn't have a lot,
- 1:04:15none of our fire stations had generators
- 1:04:17on them. City Hall didn't have a
- 1:04:19generator on them. We
- 1:04:20literally ran the EOC from a closet as
- 1:04:22big as this room. You know, so it was
- 1:04:25just, we have come a long
- 1:04:26way. We've come a long way. But the most
- 1:04:28important thing, and this is
- 1:04:29part of what we're going to be
- 1:04:30talking about today, is that the key to
- 1:04:32getting through a storm safely with
- 1:04:35grace, with relative
- 1:04:38comfort, because it is a storm, is to be
- 1:04:40prepared to get stuff
- 1:04:41organized before the event takes
- 1:04:42place. Yeah, that's the biggest thing is
- 1:04:44if you're prepared and you do some
- 1:04:46mitigation efforts at
- 1:04:47your house, it really does pay dividends.
- 1:04:50You know, as far as the FEMA
- 1:04:51guidelines, and I'll give you
- 1:04:52just as a little segue into it, but FEMA
- 1:04:55says for every dollar you
- 1:04:57spend getting mitigated or
- 1:05:00prepared, it's $13 saved on the back end.
- 1:05:03So in regards to what I
- 1:05:04mean by that, and I'll just use
- 1:05:05an analogy for whenever we had COVID, you
- 1:05:08know, everybody, we had to
- 1:05:09go to the N95 masks, right?
- 1:05:11If you would have bought N95 masks before
- 1:05:13COVID, let's say, and we
- 1:05:14didn't, you know, nobody really
- 1:05:15saw it coming, but then once it did, and
- 1:05:18the masks were 65 cents a
- 1:05:20piece before COVID, there was
- 1:05:21$6 a piece after COVID started. So that
- 1:05:24mitigation effort, that one thing would
- 1:05:26have saved you so much
- 1:05:27on the back end. Right. So similar thing.
- 1:05:29So if you look, you know,
- 1:05:30here on the table, we've got
- 1:05:31multiple things here. And we'll kind of
- 1:05:33start down there. And of course, you
- 1:05:34know, start off with,
- 1:05:35make sure you have your batteries, make
- 1:05:37sure you have flashlights,
- 1:05:38make sure you have a charger to
- 1:05:40make sure your stuff is fully charged.
- 1:05:42Make sure you have, you know, your
- 1:05:43weather radio right there.
- 1:05:45And there's, you know, other ways to
- 1:05:46listen to weather, you know,
- 1:05:47the radio, the normal radio,
- 1:05:48make sure if your TV is working, listen
- 1:05:50to the reports coming
- 1:05:51through TV. And then of course,
- 1:05:53one of the biggest ones down there, or
- 1:05:55the biggest one is
- 1:05:55medications. Make sure that you, you know,
- 1:05:58if you if a storm is coming, or it's pre
- 1:06:00season, make sure that
- 1:06:01those are filled, make sure that
- 1:06:03if we have a storm bearing down on us,
- 1:06:04and it's a couple days out,
- 1:06:06make sure that your stuff is
- 1:06:07filled at least for two weeks, we would
- 1:06:09like to see more like a
- 1:06:10month, but two weeks is the end of
- 1:06:11the minimum. And then I would say, you
- 1:06:13know, if you, you know, work your way
- 1:06:14around here, you know,
- 1:06:15some cleaning products, it's always good
- 1:06:17to have a first aid kit, I think that
- 1:06:18that's one of the big
- 1:06:19things too. And then of course, non
- 1:06:21perishable food items, things like, you
- 1:06:23know, you know, drink
- 1:06:24pouches, things like napkins and
- 1:06:27drinkware, but also make sure you have a
- 1:06:29gallon of water per person
- 1:06:31per day, up to 72 hours. I always say a
- 1:06:35week now. And only reason I say that is
- 1:06:37because when we were
- 1:06:37up in Hurricane Michael in the panhandle,
- 1:06:39you know, we weren't
- 1:06:40able to get to some people,
- 1:06:41we say 72 hours is usually our turnaround
- 1:06:43time. But some of those people we
- 1:06:45couldn't because they
- 1:06:46were on an island, we couldn't get to
- 1:06:47them for a week. Now, just to just to
- 1:06:49clarify, oh, you were
- 1:06:50talking about Michael, which hit up in
- 1:06:51the up in the panhandle,
- 1:06:52right? What were you guys doing
- 1:06:53there? So I was deployed there through
- 1:06:55the state EOC, I was running
- 1:06:57as a liaison for one of the
- 1:07:00desks up there. And basically what we did
- 1:07:02is we were doing search
- 1:07:03and rescue in that area.
- 1:07:04So the search and rescue teams would go
- 1:07:06into an area, we would
- 1:07:07grid it off, they would do a
- 1:07:08search in that complete area looking for
- 1:07:10survivors. And then if we had
- 1:07:12anything we could give them,
- 1:07:13we would give it to them like water, ice,
- 1:07:14that kind of stuff. We do
- 1:07:16have points of distribution
- 1:07:18in the city, where we try to do those
- 1:07:20things after the storm. Sure. But that
- 1:07:22takes time to set up.
- 1:07:23Now go just just for a snapshot. What how
- 1:07:26bad was it up for for
- 1:07:28Michael? I was really,
- 1:07:29it was category five. And a lot of the
- 1:07:34areas that got hammered,
- 1:07:35Mexico Beach, Panama City,
- 1:07:37a lot of that infrastructure was built in
- 1:07:39the 70s and 80s. So
- 1:07:40it didn't have to get,
- 1:07:43it was grandfathered in, didn't have to
- 1:07:44go through the 1992 building
- 1:07:46codes. And so a lot of those
- 1:07:49places that were lost were because of,
- 1:07:52they were built back before
- 1:07:541992. We did see some houses
- 1:07:57and structures that were built later that
- 1:08:00had been hardened up to
- 1:08:01200 mile an hour winds and
- 1:08:02were able to withstand it. There was a
- 1:08:05house on Mexico Beach that
- 1:08:07had been hardened, they had
- 1:08:08built it brand new. And that one was
- 1:08:10still standing, had generator
- 1:08:11power. And the guy basically
- 1:08:13had power the entire time and was good.
- 1:08:15It was built on stilts. So
- 1:08:17the water didn't get into his
- 1:08:19property. And so it was actually worked
- 1:08:20out pretty well for him. But
- 1:08:21the message is, is that this is
- 1:08:23not kidding around. This is not just,
- 1:08:25Hey, let's have a party. It
- 1:08:27can be very serious business,
- 1:08:28especially when you're dealing with a
- 1:08:29major hurricane. Right. So
- 1:08:30I think, you know, when you
- 1:08:31when you lived in, when you grew up in
- 1:08:33Florida, you've been in
- 1:08:33Florida and you've been here a
- 1:08:34long time, you know, you when you've been
- 1:08:36through several storms, you
- 1:08:38it's not that you get complacent,
- 1:08:39but you go like, okay, I've made it
- 1:08:41through. So I should be pretty good. But
- 1:08:44there's always that,
- 1:08:45you know, we had Dorian sitting off our
- 1:08:46doorstep. It was, that was
- 1:08:48a strong category five storm
- 1:08:51that had 20 foot of a storm surge in the
- 1:08:54Bahamas. And if that would have came
- 1:08:56ashore here, we would
- 1:08:57have, we would have been, we would have
- 1:08:59had some devastating things
- 1:09:00happen back during Wilma. I'll
- 1:09:03use Francis Wilma and Jean, or Francis
- 1:09:05Jean and Wilma, should I say
- 1:09:06that that's how they lined up.
- 1:09:08But when we had those come through, you
- 1:09:10know, I was on one of the
- 1:09:11search and rescue teams that
- 1:09:13went out and we had several buildings and
- 1:09:15several structures and
- 1:09:16houses that had been either
- 1:09:18partially collapsed or collapsed. And we
- 1:09:20had to go get people. And
- 1:09:21that was those were category
- 1:09:22two storms. So there's a pot, you know,
- 1:09:25when it, so what happened
- 1:09:26was, you know, it was a perfect,
- 1:09:27kind of a perfect lineup where Francis
- 1:09:29sat on top of us for a long time, dumped
- 1:09:31water, dumped water,
- 1:09:32dumped water, we were, we were inundated
- 1:09:34and saturated here in
- 1:09:36the, in West Palm Beach.
- 1:09:37And then what happened is here comes Jean
- 1:09:39afterwards with strong
- 1:09:40category two warren there,
- 1:09:41because we were so inundated and
- 1:09:43saturated with that, it kind of weakened
- 1:09:46some of the structures.
- 1:09:47And then next thing you know, some of
- 1:09:49them are going down. So not
- 1:09:50to be messing around with don't
- 1:09:51take, don't take anything as just being
- 1:09:54just a little blow. You have
- 1:09:55to be real serious about it.
- 1:09:56If we go back to last year, we had a
- 1:09:58storm that didn't directly hit us,
- 1:10:00Milton, it hit on the West
- 1:10:01Coast and went way north of us. But the
- 1:10:03spread on that storm was
- 1:10:04so, so wide that it threw it,
- 1:10:07we kind of knew this tornadoes were going
- 1:10:09to be a possibility in the
- 1:10:10morning when we got on the
- 1:10:11calls with the National Weather Service.
- 1:10:13And they said, Hey, listen,
- 1:10:15there's a strong possibility
- 1:10:16we're getting tornadoes today. And we
- 1:10:18watched them drop in
- 1:10:19Broward first. And then next thing
- 1:10:21you know, they're here in Palm Beach
- 1:10:22County, they're in our
- 1:10:22backyard. So it just because a
- 1:10:25storm is coming in, doesn't mean if we
- 1:10:28don't get directly
- 1:10:28impacted, we can't be indirectly
- 1:10:30impacted, which we were with Milton. I
- 1:10:32think a lot of people don't really
- 1:10:34realize that when you're
- 1:10:35talking about a tropical storm, when
- 1:10:37you're talking about a
- 1:10:38hurricane, that it's almost
- 1:10:39guaranteed there will be a risk of
- 1:10:42tornado activity in
- 1:10:44those storms. And they may be
- 1:10:46small, but they still could be very, very
- 1:10:47powerful and very
- 1:10:48devastating. Yeah. So I mean,
- 1:10:50anytime you, we just had some storms roll
- 1:10:52through two days ago with
- 1:10:5460 mile an hour wind gust.
- 1:10:56You know, when you live in a tropical
- 1:10:58weather state like Florida,
- 1:11:00you expect that we're going
- 1:11:01to get tropical weather and it doesn't
- 1:11:03have to be a full on
- 1:11:04category three or four or five storm
- 1:11:07to do the damage that a storm that sits
- 1:11:10on top of us for, let's just
- 1:11:11say it sits on top of us for 36
- 1:11:13hours. It's a tropical storm, but it
- 1:11:15gives us 12 to 14 hour inches of rain
- 1:11:17over a 24 hour period.
- 1:11:19That can be devastating. Well, let's,
- 1:11:21let's jump back to our
- 1:11:22first little group here. We were
- 1:11:24talking about being prepared and starting
- 1:11:26to gather things prior
- 1:11:27to the storm. Obviously,
- 1:11:29everyone's used to having batteries and
- 1:11:30flashlights. I think one
- 1:11:33of the things that people
- 1:11:34start forgetting is that even though your
- 1:11:37flashlight may be US
- 1:11:39USB capable and you can
- 1:11:40plug it into the wall, there's not,
- 1:11:42there's a good chance
- 1:11:42you're going to be out of power.
- 1:11:44And so, yeah. So yeah. Yeah. So the
- 1:11:47biggest thing is making sure
- 1:11:48all your things are charged,
- 1:11:49making sure that your batteries are up
- 1:11:51there, up and ready to go and that
- 1:11:53they're within date and
- 1:11:54those kinds of things. It's good to
- 1:11:55change them out the
- 1:11:56beginning of hurricane season.
- 1:11:57Part of the other thing is they do have
- 1:11:59the battery packs now
- 1:12:00where you can store it, store
- 1:12:02battery for a phone or, you know, even
- 1:12:06like, you know, tablets and
- 1:12:08stuff like that. Yeah. So you
- 1:12:09can have those things and those work
- 1:12:11really well too. So it's just
- 1:12:13a matter of you could be out of
- 1:12:15power for up to, you know, I mean, in the
- 1:12:18past two, three weeks, maybe more
- 1:12:21depending on infrastructure.
- 1:12:22But FP&L has also hardened their system
- 1:12:25really well. And, you know,
- 1:12:27we're not, even when we had,
- 1:12:30you know, Irma come through, our power
- 1:12:31was back on pretty quickly.
- 1:12:33Some of the power lines that go
- 1:12:34down, we, you know, in the older parts of
- 1:12:36the city, in the south end
- 1:12:37and the north end, we have a lot
- 1:12:38of old growth trees. Sometimes they take
- 1:12:41the power lines down. But
- 1:12:42FP&L has been really great about
- 1:12:44getting those up and running quickly.
- 1:12:47They have it pretty much down now. I
- 1:12:48mean, after, you got to
- 1:12:49remember, they cover the entire state of
- 1:12:51Florida. And then over in
- 1:12:53the last decade, we have had
- 1:12:54storm after storm after storm, not only
- 1:12:56on our coast, but on the
- 1:12:57west coast and in the Panhandle.
- 1:12:59So they're getting very used to being
- 1:13:00able to go out and get
- 1:13:01stuff back up pretty quickly.
- 1:13:03Now let's talk a little bit about the
- 1:13:04weather radio. It almost sounds like
- 1:13:06antiquated technology.
- 1:13:08Why would I bother with the radio? I've
- 1:13:09got, I got my cell phone.
- 1:13:11What are the chances of a cell
- 1:13:12phone not working the way you expected
- 1:13:14to, the rainstorm? Yeah. So,
- 1:13:16you know, that was one of the
- 1:13:18things that we saw in the Panhandle as
- 1:13:19well, is once the storm started rolling
- 1:13:21through it, did knock
- 1:13:22out a lot of the towers. So cell phone
- 1:13:27coverage was pretty sporadic.
- 1:13:29We have a little bit more of
- 1:13:30a hardened system down here in South
- 1:13:31Florida. However, you could,
- 1:13:34you know, you could lose cell
- 1:13:35phone signal. So it is good to have
- 1:13:36something like a weather
- 1:13:37radio. If you have access to,
- 1:13:40still have access to TV, if you're still
- 1:13:42able to watch it, it's
- 1:13:43good to have it. But you want
- 1:13:44those weather updates constantly. Because
- 1:13:46if you get a tornado
- 1:13:47warning or a tornado watch or,
- 1:13:49or if you get something with wind gusts
- 1:13:51that could be certain, you know, levels,
- 1:13:53even after the storm
- 1:13:54pushes through, because we're still, you
- 1:13:56still, you know, we're
- 1:13:57still getting this feeder bands
- 1:13:58that are coming through even after,
- 1:13:59before and after the storm.
- 1:14:01So you want to be able to know
- 1:14:02what's coming. And a lot of these radios
- 1:14:04will have the ability to
- 1:14:05listen to TV bands as well.
- 1:14:06So you can tune in to local stations and
- 1:14:09see what's happening
- 1:14:10specifically in our area. And
- 1:14:11that's another point. A lot of people
- 1:14:13will tell you, Oh, well,
- 1:14:14you know what? I'm watching
- 1:14:15the weather channel, the national
- 1:14:17channel, or I'm watching
- 1:14:18Miami, or I'm watching, you know,
- 1:14:20perhaps Orlando. The idea is if you're
- 1:14:23living in West Palm, it
- 1:14:24might be smart to stay with the
- 1:14:26local affiliates that are here serving
- 1:14:27this area. Right. Because
- 1:14:28there's a lot of information that
- 1:14:30goes out over the local affiliates that's
- 1:14:32put out by Palm Beach
- 1:14:34County Department of
- 1:14:34Emergency Management by us at City of
- 1:14:36West Palm Beach Emergency
- 1:14:37Management. There's a lot
- 1:14:38of information that comes out and a lot
- 1:14:40of times we feed it to them
- 1:14:41so that they can put it out so
- 1:14:43everyone can hear. So it's always better
- 1:14:45to listen to your local news
- 1:14:46source than it is to listen to
- 1:14:48somewhere else in the state or national.
- 1:14:50What's your opinion about
- 1:14:51social media? There's a lot
- 1:14:52of times people are listening to their,
- 1:14:54looking at the Instagram or
- 1:14:55their TikTok or whatever for
- 1:14:57information. What's your take on that?
- 1:14:59Well, I think a lot of
- 1:14:59young people, especially a lot
- 1:15:01of people now are, that's how they're
- 1:15:02digesting their news. They're
- 1:15:03not going to local affiliates
- 1:15:05or watching it on WPTV or WPEC or any of
- 1:15:08those channels. They're
- 1:15:09literally getting it now from
- 1:15:10social media. So I think it's a really
- 1:15:13good tool for us to be able
- 1:15:14to use. I would say the only
- 1:15:15thing is make sure you're either going to
- 1:15:18a local news source or
- 1:15:19you're following like us, like
- 1:15:21City of West Palm Beach or West Palm
- 1:15:23Beach Fire or WPB Fire or
- 1:15:26the City and make sure that you
- 1:15:28have those in your feed because we do put
- 1:15:30out information in those
- 1:15:31constantly. Yeah, and actually
- 1:15:33I'm glad you brought it up because the
- 1:15:34City website at WPB.org as
- 1:15:37well as TV18 and all our,
- 1:15:40we're streaming on various platforms.
- 1:15:43We'll be doing our very
- 1:15:44best to keep information that's
- 1:15:46specific to West Palm Beach available. So
- 1:15:48that's a great way to stay
- 1:15:50informed along with listening
- 1:15:51to National Weather Service, along with
- 1:15:54taking a listen to the local affiliate
- 1:15:56television stations.
- 1:15:57And that'll keep you informed so you know
- 1:15:58what's going on during
- 1:15:59those types of storms.
- 1:16:02We're talking a little bit here about
- 1:16:03moving on to this section here about
- 1:16:06first aid kits. I mean,
- 1:16:09I think people don't realize how easily
- 1:16:11you can become injured in a storm.
- 1:16:15Yeah, so you know, it only takes you
- 1:16:16walking outside and
- 1:16:17stepping on something to, you know,
- 1:16:20maybe even a nail through your shoe or
- 1:16:21even if you have shoes
- 1:16:22on or anything like that.
- 1:16:23It's very easy to get injured and you
- 1:16:26know, we, so in the fire department,
- 1:16:28whenever you call 911 and
- 1:16:30it's during a storm, there is a certain
- 1:16:31time where police and fire
- 1:16:33are not going out because we're
- 1:16:34not going to, we're not going to risk
- 1:16:35that because if we get first
- 1:16:38responders injured, then we
- 1:16:40definitely can't help you. So we want to
- 1:16:42make sure that you have
- 1:16:43the ability to possibly take
- 1:16:45care of yourself because we will cue
- 1:16:46those calls for a certain amount of time
- 1:16:49and then once it gets
- 1:16:49to a certain, you know, wind mile per
- 1:16:52hour or it gets clear
- 1:16:53enough, we will start going out and
- 1:16:54running calls, but they're queued up.
- 1:16:56There may be a hundred deep and we're
- 1:16:57going to try to get to like
- 1:16:58the biggest stuff first. So if you have,
- 1:17:01you know, an injury that
- 1:17:03you can try to treat yourself,
- 1:17:04you want to make sure that you're able to
- 1:17:06do that first aid kit is
- 1:17:07a perfect way to do that.
- 1:17:09The other thing I will say is if, you
- 1:17:11know, if you're in a
- 1:17:12house or if you're in,
- 1:17:13you know, a property with multiple
- 1:17:15people, it doesn't take much
- 1:17:17to get, to get the next person
- 1:17:19sick. If somebody's already sick or
- 1:17:21getting ready to become sick. So that's
- 1:17:23where stuff, you know,
- 1:17:24sanitizer and cleaning products come in
- 1:17:26really handy because the
- 1:17:28last thing you want to do is
- 1:17:29get camp crud. We call it camp crud,
- 1:17:31right? Running around in a house and then
- 1:17:33what happens is, is now
- 1:17:34everybody's sick and now you're dealing,
- 1:17:36now you're dealing with
- 1:17:36the aftermath of a hurricane.
- 1:17:38You're dealing with sick people as well.
- 1:17:40And boy, howdy, you're going
- 1:17:41to have a house. You're going
- 1:17:42to have to win. You have to have the
- 1:17:43windows open because there's no AC.
- 1:17:45There's no one's getting
- 1:17:46the bad, a proper bath. Well, that's a
- 1:17:48kind of drag. So you get cleanliness is
- 1:17:51very, very important
- 1:17:52in these types of things. Yeah. And we
- 1:17:53also talked about, you
- 1:17:54know, kind of off air about
- 1:17:57tubs, you know, about filling your tub
- 1:17:59with, that was the old adage
- 1:18:00when I was growing up is fill
- 1:18:01your tubs with water so that you have
- 1:18:03water. And that was, you
- 1:18:04know, that was, that was before
- 1:18:06there was a lot of bottled water. There
- 1:18:08wasn't a lot of that back
- 1:18:09in those days. So basically,
- 1:18:11you know, you can use that one or two
- 1:18:13ways. You can use it for, you
- 1:18:15know, like we're talking about
- 1:18:15like baths. Yeah, you can use it for
- 1:18:17like, you know, take the water and kind
- 1:18:18of do a wipe off bath.
- 1:18:20You can use it to flush the toilets, you
- 1:18:21know, use the water for
- 1:18:22that. And then if you had to,
- 1:18:24you could also use potable water. I would
- 1:18:26just say you want to make
- 1:18:27sure that you, you try to boil
- 1:18:29it before you ingest it. Absolutely. So
- 1:18:31yeah, I mean, so there is
- 1:18:33an important thing to store
- 1:18:34water that can just keep things running,
- 1:18:36keep general, you know,
- 1:18:39hygiene in place, because it
- 1:18:41might be a long run. It might could be a
- 1:18:43couple weeks before things
- 1:18:44get turned back on again.
- 1:18:46You mentioned something about going to be
- 1:18:47moving on to food here in
- 1:18:48a moment, but you mentioned
- 1:18:49something about perhaps, you know, if you
- 1:18:51need to make water
- 1:18:52drinkable, you got to go ahead and
- 1:18:54bring it to a boil for a certain amount
- 1:18:56of time. Let's talk about cooking and
- 1:18:58heating things while
- 1:19:00you're in a situation. I guess the
- 1:19:01mindset is you're basically
- 1:19:03camping now. Yeah, so basically,
- 1:19:05that's what you're doing. You're camping
- 1:19:07inside. If you have no
- 1:19:08power, you're kind of camping
- 1:19:09inside your house. So if you have a
- 1:19:11grill, or if you have some
- 1:19:13other type of heating source that
- 1:19:14runs on gas, those usually are usually up
- 1:19:17and running still. And
- 1:19:18if you have a propane,
- 1:19:21it makes it easier because you have,
- 1:19:22whether you have an in-ground propane
- 1:19:24system or whether you
- 1:19:25have the 20 pound cylinders or however it
- 1:19:28is, and you can still use
- 1:19:29it, that's a great heating
- 1:19:31source. One of the things is, I would
- 1:19:33say, is do not, if you have
- 1:19:34a generator, great, you know,
- 1:19:37then you can run some of your appliances,
- 1:19:38you can run some of
- 1:19:39the stuff in your house,
- 1:19:40but never bring in a portable generator
- 1:19:42either in the garage or the house because
- 1:19:44then you're spreading CO, which could,
- 1:19:47you know, carbon
- 1:19:48monoxide, which could eventually,
- 1:19:50honestly, kill you. So you don't want to
- 1:19:52do that. We have seen that
- 1:19:53in the past in the city where
- 1:19:54people have brought their generators in
- 1:19:57and it never ends well.
- 1:19:58So I would say, you know,
- 1:19:59make sure that you have a plan for that.
- 1:20:02The biggest thing with
- 1:20:02all of this is make sure you
- 1:20:04have a plan. Make sure you have a plan
- 1:20:06for any of the stuff that we have up
- 1:20:08here. Make sure you have
- 1:20:09a kit. Make sure that you have an escape
- 1:20:11route. If you have to get out of the
- 1:20:13house, make sure you
- 1:20:13have a meeting point with your family.
- 1:20:15Make sure that you have all of these
- 1:20:17things in place before
- 1:20:18the storm. You just said something that I
- 1:20:20think is fascinating that a
- 1:20:22lot of people don't think about
- 1:20:23as part of planning. I know that I will,
- 1:20:26you know, put shutters up on
- 1:20:27my windows and barricade the
- 1:20:29doors and effectively I'm trapped inside
- 1:20:32my house. Right. You really need to
- 1:20:34develop. You've got to
- 1:20:35have a plan if something really goes
- 1:20:37south, a way to get out.
- 1:20:38Correct. You got to have an escape
- 1:20:40plan. You got to be able to, you know, no
- 1:20:42matter where you're
- 1:20:42staying in the house, you got to,
- 1:20:44you got to have at least one or two means
- 1:20:46of egress from anywhere
- 1:20:48and it can't be, you know,
- 1:20:49only one in the house. It's got to be,
- 1:20:52you got to have a means of
- 1:20:53egress either in the front of the
- 1:20:55house, in the back of the house, but you
- 1:20:57got to have at least two.
- 1:20:58Right. Well, let's talk a little
- 1:20:59bit about food here. Now, obviously
- 1:21:02you're going to want to buy food that can
- 1:21:04be stored dry and for
- 1:21:06a long, a longer period of time. Right.
- 1:21:08You got to plan on losing pretty much
- 1:21:09everything that's in
- 1:21:10your refrigerator. Yeah. Well, I mean,
- 1:21:12you know, and that depends. Yeah. Yes. If
- 1:21:14you have a generator,
- 1:21:15you can sometimes you can run your
- 1:21:16refrigerator. It does draw a
- 1:21:17lot of power for a portable
- 1:21:19generator, but you can, but yeah, you can
- 1:21:21just plan on, Hey, we may
- 1:21:22not be using the food in
- 1:21:23the refrigerator. We want to make sure
- 1:21:24that we use things that are
- 1:21:26non-perishable. Peanut butter is
- 1:21:28always good. Absolutely. Bread, crackers,
- 1:21:31like these things up here,
- 1:21:32soups, top ramen noodle. The
- 1:21:34only thing with this one is you got to
- 1:21:35boil water or get hot water.
- 1:21:36Yeah. But I mean, and make sure
- 1:21:37you have a can opener, not a, not a
- 1:21:40electrical one. Make sure it's a, it's a
- 1:21:42hand one, you know. I
- 1:21:43mean, all of these things are great to
- 1:21:45think about, but it has to,
- 1:21:47you should have a stash of non
- 1:21:49perishable stuff. Sure. Stuff like, you
- 1:21:51know, a can of spaghetti or
- 1:21:53whatever. And a lot of times
- 1:21:54they'll come with a pop top and then
- 1:21:57sweat that. So that's a really good
- 1:21:58thing. But amounts that
- 1:22:00can be eaten at the same at one time, not
- 1:22:03because you're not going to
- 1:22:04be able to store anything.
- 1:22:05You can't, you're not going to have a
- 1:22:06refrigerator. So buy things that are
- 1:22:08small or at least large
- 1:22:09enough that you can share, be done with
- 1:22:11it and throw the can away
- 1:22:12and get it out. You do make
- 1:22:14a good point. We have to continue
- 1:22:16thinking about hygiene or
- 1:22:18you could easily introduce
- 1:22:20some pretty nasty little sicknesses into
- 1:22:21the. Yeah. You don't want
- 1:22:22to, you don't want to get
- 1:22:23to a point where you're, you're
- 1:22:26introducing any type of bacteria or, or
- 1:22:30things that can spread or,
- 1:22:31or mold that can grow. Because what
- 1:22:33happens is, is when you start eating on
- 1:22:34that or drinking from
- 1:22:35that, you can get sick. And the last
- 1:22:37thing you want to do is be sick during
- 1:22:38the middle of a storm
- 1:22:39or after a storm. Now, the entire thing
- 1:22:41that we have here in front
- 1:22:42of this is sort of predicated
- 1:22:44on people staying within their homes. But
- 1:22:46I would argue that there's
- 1:22:47going to be a discussion long
- 1:22:49before the storm where people will say,
- 1:22:51should I stay or should I
- 1:22:53go? As far as evacuating,
- 1:22:56let's talk a little bit about that. So we
- 1:22:57have evacuation zones that
- 1:22:59we, we have on our website
- 1:23:01at wpb.org front slash hurricane. And
- 1:23:04then there's also the Palm Beach County
- 1:23:06has it, but we all kind
- 1:23:07of live in the same thing where we have
- 1:23:09these evacuation zones in
- 1:23:10the county. And when we tell
- 1:23:12you to evacuate, you should evacuate.
- 1:23:15That's, that's bar none.
- 1:23:16Now, if you're outside of those
- 1:23:18evacuation zones and you don't feel
- 1:23:19comfortable and you want to
- 1:23:20evacuate, that's, that's on,
- 1:23:22you know, that's your decision. And we're
- 1:23:24not going to knock you
- 1:23:25for that, of course. But,
- 1:23:27but if you are in evacuation zone,
- 1:23:30absolutely should
- 1:23:31evacuate. And if we tell you, hey,
- 1:23:33we're evacuating A or B or C and we'll
- 1:23:37show maps of those areas. And
- 1:23:39we'll tell you, and usually we
- 1:23:40send up PD and fire to tell people like,
- 1:23:43Hey, you're in an
- 1:23:44evacuation zone. You probably need
- 1:23:46to leave. So, and also if you do decide
- 1:23:48to evacuate, I would
- 1:23:49assume that you need to get
- 1:23:50started a little early because it's going
- 1:23:52to be you and a whole lot
- 1:23:53of other people trying to,
- 1:23:54trying to leave the area. Could be. Yeah.
- 1:23:57I mean, we have seen it in
- 1:23:58the past. We saw it with several
- 1:23:59storms where people were evacuating the
- 1:24:01area and that you, you run
- 1:24:02into multiple things there,
- 1:24:03right? You run into, could there be a gas
- 1:24:06shortage? Are you going to
- 1:24:07be able to fill your car up?
- 1:24:08Is 95 going to be packed? Is the term
- 1:24:11pipe going to be packed? Am I
- 1:24:12going to be able to go where
- 1:24:13I want to go? You know, it's kind of
- 1:24:15funny because several
- 1:24:18years ago, and I can't remember
- 1:24:19which storm it was now. There has been so
- 1:24:21many, but basically we
- 1:24:22thought we were going to get
- 1:24:23direct hit and we had people and it was
- 1:24:26going to be a strong storm. I can't
- 1:24:28remember what it was,
- 1:24:28a four or five, or it was coming. It was
- 1:24:30coming this way. And
- 1:24:31basically we had a bunch of people
- 1:24:33go to the west coast of Florida. And then
- 1:24:35what happened is that
- 1:24:36storm kept heading south when
- 1:24:38right around the bottom of the state and
- 1:24:40came right around through
- 1:24:41the west coast. And all those
- 1:24:43people that left to go to the west coast
- 1:24:45suddenly a storm. Yeah. Got
- 1:24:46it worse than the people that
- 1:24:47stayed on this side. So it just, you
- 1:24:50know, I would say if
- 1:24:51you're in an evacuation zone,
- 1:24:531 million percent, if we give you the
- 1:24:54evacuation orders, you
- 1:24:56should evacuate. If you're not and
- 1:24:58you feel like you want to evacuate,
- 1:25:00evacuate, but try to go somewhere where
- 1:25:02the storm is probably
- 1:25:02not going to be. Right. What about
- 1:25:04options like staying in a shelter, local
- 1:25:07shelter? Yeah. We have
- 1:25:08those options. The county opens those
- 1:25:10shelters. Whenever they see
- 1:25:12fit at what point they want to
- 1:25:14want to do it depends on the storm and
- 1:25:15the path and a lot of
- 1:25:16other factors. But they do open
- 1:25:18shelters and then they usually like, once
- 1:25:21again, we put it out on
- 1:25:22local media or we put it out on
- 1:25:24our websites or we put it out on social
- 1:25:26media. So all of those
- 1:25:28things. And then once again,
- 1:25:29that's why you should be listening
- 1:25:30because if it is a possibility that you
- 1:25:32have to go to a shelter,
- 1:25:33you want to go. The other part of a
- 1:25:35shelter is if you have a special needs
- 1:25:38shelter or a pet shelter,
- 1:25:39you should go on the website for Palm
- 1:25:41Beach County Emergency Management. Right.
- 1:25:44And because there is
- 1:25:44some paperwork, if you fill it out
- 1:25:46beforehand, it just helps with the
- 1:25:48process later. And there's
- 1:25:50also, there are also special places that
- 1:25:52if you have a member of
- 1:25:54your family, which requires
- 1:25:55physical assistance or medical
- 1:25:57assistance, that you can
- 1:25:59know where these places are,
- 1:26:01get on their list early. Correct. And get
- 1:26:04taken care of that way as
- 1:26:05well. Yes, that's exactly.
- 1:26:06And that's all county. Yeah, that's all
- 1:26:08through the county. Correct.
- 1:26:10Very good. So we've covered
- 1:26:11a lot of ground here. What have we
- 1:26:14missed? What are the main messages we
- 1:26:16want to deliver to folks
- 1:26:17who live here, getting them ready for a
- 1:26:19possible storm? Yeah, I
- 1:26:20think the biggest message is make
- 1:26:21sure you have a kit available. Make sure
- 1:26:23you have a kit ready.
- 1:26:24Make sure that you prepare
- 1:26:26for the storm season coming up, not six
- 1:26:28months from now, not, you
- 1:26:29know, not during storm season
- 1:26:31now. So we're getting ready to go in
- 1:26:32storm season in June. Now's
- 1:26:34the perfect time. I remember
- 1:26:36when I, when hurricane Nicole was coming
- 1:26:38through and it was a category
- 1:26:40one storm, we were, you know,
- 1:26:42we weren't expecting too much, but we did
- 1:26:43get a lot of flooding in a
- 1:26:44lot of areas. So people weren't
- 1:26:46able to get out. But I remember driving
- 1:26:48into work for that hurricane
- 1:26:49and it was just a couple of
- 1:26:50years ago. And there's an Aldi's down the
- 1:26:53street on the way in the
- 1:26:54work. And I saw the line and
- 1:26:55it's the day of, and they're wrapped
- 1:26:58around the store. Oh my God.
- 1:26:59And that's just not a good way
- 1:27:00to get ready and prepared. The best way
- 1:27:04is to do it now. Do it
- 1:27:05now. And the other message for
- 1:27:072026 is it only takes one. It only takes
- 1:27:10one. So I know that everybody's
- 1:27:11predicting it's going to be
- 1:27:12an El Nino and it's going to be a slower
- 1:27:14season, but 1992 was the
- 1:27:17same exact season. And we got
- 1:27:19Andrew and the rest of the season wasn't
- 1:27:21bad. It was one storm that
- 1:27:24devastated South Florida.
- 1:27:26Brent, thank you so much. We appreciate
- 1:27:27you being here. Let's hope we
- 1:27:29don't need to have to do any
- 1:27:30of that. Let's be prepared for anything
- 1:27:32that may be coming our way. Absolutely.
- 1:27:34Thank you. Thank you.
