Latest / Podcast - Big 98.7 / Self checkouts are making us lonelier
Transcript
- 0:00You know, when you go to the grocery storey go to Walmart. Self
- 0:02checkouts becoming more and more of the thing, obviously, but it turns out
- 0:05the self checkouts could be contributing to our loneliness, and nobody likes to be
- 0:14lonely. That's what I've heard, they say of pay lanes and US grocery
- 0:19chains are at this point self checkouts. You know, I feel like we've
- 0:22moved past the point of complaining, you know, like, oh, they're
- 0:24taking jobs right that. I think we've all just been beaten into submission where
- 0:28it's like, all right, fine, they're all going to be self checkouts
- 0:30and listen, I'll take a self checkout. However, it's making us lonely
- 0:33because Tony Antonucci, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, explained
- 0:39that these relationships we have with the checkout people are considered quote weak ties.
- 0:44They're described as warm, low stakes relationships, similar to the ones between cashiers
- 0:49and customers. They're a critical tool from maintaining emotional well being, especially later
- 0:56in life as your social circle shrinks. So you think about out, you
- 1:00know, elderly people, Yeah, who I think about my grandma who you
- 1:03know, as everybody around them is dying, right, they just you know,
- 1:07find solace in their relationship with the cash here people they see semi regularly.
- 1:11A robot. Now it's a robot. Now they have nobody, They
- 1:15have nobody. James, Wow, Pike, so are you It's a little
- 1:19early for this early for it to make me so sad. Now, nevertheless,
- 1:26the US borrow that's how you say that word, right, I think
- 1:30it's probably bureau. It's federal borrow of Labor Statistics anticipates in the number of
- 1:34cashiers nationwide expected to shrink ten percent over the next ten years, a loss
- 1:41of roughly thirty three five hundred thousand jobs. Wow, that's a lot of
- 1:47jobs, Pike. So let's take cashier's gonna do. Let me, I
- 1:51know we're a day early, we do what do you do on Fridays on
- 1:53Pike and Amanda in the morning, But let me hit you with what do
- 1:56you do? Okay, you're standing at the grocery store, nobody's in line.
- 1:59You gotta sell check out lane, and you got a nice young lady,
- 2:01probably a senior at more at high yepkay, working in the check yep.
- 2:06That sounds right. Which lane he's taken both empty? You said both
- 2:09empty? Human? You're taking the human? Yeah, you like that awkward
- 2:14conversation like the elevator conversation too, Really, Yeah, what are you gonna
- 2:17hit him with? You know, how's your day going? Probably gonna comment
- 2:21on something that's happening around me, is that right? Yeah, like something
- 2:24in the store. Well, like, depending on you know, who they
- 2:27are, i'd say like, hey, you look like you're real angry today.
- 2:30Oh they love that. Why aren't you you know you'd be prettier if
- 2:34you smile? Yeah right, yeah, that's but I'm you know what I
- 2:37like to do really spice up the conversation when they hit you with the did
- 2:39you find everything okay? Today? Because I feel like ninety nine point nine
- 2:43percent of the time people go yep, I like to you know, I
- 2:46like to say I had a little trouble dude. Yeah, I like to
- 2:47just you know, maybe yeah. Well, you know, I started high
- 2:51and low for this specific packet of tune on what good news I ended up
- 2:57finding Wow, Well you know what after you After I dove into the back
- 3:00the shelf and spilled everything onto the aisle five, I found my tuna.
- 3:04Well, you're spilling in the gusto cleaning that up. Now, now you've
- 3:07had a nice little interaction and you're no longer lovely. I like to hit
- 3:12him with the because usually they'll say how are you or did you find anything?
- 3:16Everything all right? So if they go how are you all hit him
- 3:19with I have never been better in my entire life. And I just kind
- 3:21of stare at Oh, really, you don't. You don't say live in
- 3:23the dream like every other I hate that so much. Gay in the Midland.
- 3:27I want to punch live in the dream and the ever love and absolute
- 3:30throw away. Just tell me you don't want to talk. You're living the
- 3:32dream? Yeah, every and it's people say without thinking it's just such a
- 3:37throwaway. I hate it. Aissory chicken at cash wise. Live in the
- 3:40dream? Is that the dream? I mean, it's not bad. It's
- 3:43a dream for some. It's actually it's like, in a minute in the
- 3:46morning, big nutty eight point seven, what's the most boring job you ever
- 3:50had? I feel like we're all bored, even our current jobs. Not
- 3:55me, of course, I'm enjoying the heck out of this. But they
- 3:59say that the average person it only takes two years at a job before they
- 4:01are completely bored with it. I got busted napping right there where you were
- 4:05sitting two days ago, Pike in the studio chair. You're napping, I
- 4:09was, well, I mean people mistake napping for being bored. Like you
- 4:13know, you're in a conversation. You let out a big yawn. People
- 4:15go, oh, am I boring. It's like, no, I'm just
- 4:17tired. I just don't sleep enough. It's nothing to do with you.
- 4:20And of our lovely co workers kicked the door and I went, wake up.
- 4:24Oh stop they did. Yeah, they hit you with a wake up.
- 4:26That's such a childish slumber party thing. It was pretty sweet though.
- 4:30And then she laughed. I mean she thought I was looking at my phone.
- 4:33Got you Were you zonked? Are you able to sit? I was
- 4:36that I was doing that move where like in high school, I should I
- 4:40was master of this, and I would just set on my cheek. It
- 4:42would look like I was reading or something. Oh yeah, let just give
- 4:45me a nice Were you a pro enough where you could like kind of have
- 4:46your pencils sitting upright still so it looked and even in your sleep still kind
- 4:50of like mindlessly scribble almost looked like I was writing still. Yeah, I
- 4:54don't remember trying that. He had to have had definitely obvious. They're just
- 4:58like whatever the guys tucker out. Let him get some arrest. Yeah,
- 5:01well it's a growing boy. I don't know what it was about classrooms,
- 5:04but yeah, you would just get so tired. And I remember thinking if
- 5:08I could just channel this amount of tiredness for night, you know, when
- 5:11I get in my bed, Yeah, that would be great. It's like
- 5:14your body just complete. It's I imagine that your immune system is like just
- 5:17rejecting sitting in that room, like I need to not be here right now.
- 5:21That's why you get tired, like I need to escape somehow, Which
- 5:26is the same as the job that you said you had, right well,
- 5:29I used to work at a gas station, which if you have ever worked
- 5:30at a gas station, maybe you're listening. You know. Let I go
- 5:32into a lot of gas stations in town and they're listening, which thank you
- 5:34for that. But I had a pretty poor experience working at the one in
- 5:38Glendon. Great gas station, great operation, but it just wasn't for me.
- 5:42Sitting there in the keyword sitting, because behind the counter, you know
- 5:46when nobody's in there either. Some busy work you could do, but I
- 5:48felt like I had done it all. So I was sitting on a stool,
- 5:51not like a work. I wasn't in a lazy boy, you know.
- 5:55I'm in a wooden stool. And the owner comes in and he looks
- 5:58at me, and I'll never forget. He goes, are you relaxing just
- 6:01like the matter of fact, No, this stool. There's never better comfortable
- 6:05stool, sir. So no, no, I'm quite miserable, in fact,
- 6:09really trying to keep my thighs from exploding. I kill these tendons.
- 6:13If I lock my knees, I'll tip right over. So the stools a
- 6:15better option. But well it would spice it up a bit. But you
- 6:19know, like any young professional, I still, even though I hated it,
- 6:24I did leave a note and left and never came back. So wow,
- 6:27that's how kids, if you're listening, that's how to quit. You
- 6:30ever want to burn bridges, So just leave a note at the very least,
- 6:33so a pike. I guarantee that you could get a job there anytime.
- 6:36I don't know because of the way you left, you think respectful,
- 6:40Well, what's the I mean what's the most boring job you've ever had?
- 6:42I worked at a factory at one time, a factory building conveyor belts,
- 6:46didn't actually factories building rollers for conveyor belts, so literally building parts for factories
- 6:51to use. So you were using a conveyor belt to build other conveyor belts.
- 6:56The conveyor belt parts would come down the line, and I had the
- 6:58wrench that came from the ceiling, an air wrench, and the parts were
- 7:00there and you just quick zip zip zip zip put it, put the rollers
- 7:03on a frame, and it just kept rolling. But that does sound incredibly
- 7:08incredibly boring. Eight hours a day again no offense of your list, so
- 7:11like you couldn't even walk away like you they told you when breakdown was it
- 7:14was four hours fifteen, get your p in man, get back. That's
- 7:18a jobs that like don't stop. See this job is like what yeah,
- 7:20we're talking right now, but like you know, later in the day there's
- 7:24like moments where you can joke around and go bug somebody in the cubicle or
- 7:28also just talking. We're also just talking, which is way harder than it
- 7:31sounds obvious now. It's so difficulty, but trust me, you know it
- 7:34sounds fun, but we're like anybody. We find things to complain about.
- 7:39For sure. I've been complaining all morning. You all you have, Yeah,
- 7:43some heated emails going on. By the way, we did solve the
- 7:45ham mystery from yesterday. I pressed my face against the window of the adjacent
- 7:49studio and I saw a ham and I was like, nice, they got
- 7:53the ham. Somebody had stolen a ham from the work fridge, and several
- 7:56emails went out, surveillance camera was checked, and it sounds like we're all
- 8:01ready to move on from the ham debacle. I don't think so. I
- 8:03think we need to keep going. Well. I don't think we'll ever ever
- 8:05move on completely. It's not gonna be a part of that's for sure.
- 8:09But you know, it's not who stole the ham. It's the friends he
- 8:11made along the way. You know what. That's what they've always said,
- 8:13always in the morning. Seven funny, They're ready, ready, he is
- 8:20funny, sunny, No Amanda stills that see what's see Romcom Royalty. Meg
- 8:28Ryan is back with a new project, her first film in eight years.
- 8:33Your band Meg, well, you know she's been getting a lot of plastic
- 8:35surgery. If you've seen it recently. She's looking a little now. I
- 8:39don't know if I could pick Meg Ryan out of a lineup, but that's
- 8:41just my reflection of how many movies I've seen. But is she a plastic
- 8:46upper one? Yeah, she's she's not looking looking now. He's not looking
- 8:50great. The new film What's it about? It's called What Happens Later.
- 8:54It's directed by her and David Dicovny as a co star. Oh, the
- 8:58Dick covester of a good Dick cup. You know, he's so good,
- 9:01so such a gem. The X Files could have gone on forever. And
- 9:05remember they brought it back. They brought back like a five episode runners.
- 9:09Was any of that good? I don't think I watched any of it.
- 9:11It was pretty silly, but you know, it did tie a couple of
- 9:13bows on the whole series, and I just it was happy to see that
- 9:18those characters iconic Fox Molder and Dana Scully and the names too. Absolutely,
- 9:22that's when they really thought about naming somebody a good name. Fox Molder,
- 9:26Dana Scully. Yeah, where do you make up names like that? I
- 9:30mean Smoldery Molder. God, he was smolder and too was he was?
- 9:33He sort of a sex icon of the nineties. I don't know if he
- 9:37was like a lot of ladies were into him, but he was with a
- 9:39lot of gals he had. He had to go to rehab for his addiction
- 9:43to the lovin Is that right? YEA trailer released for this movie. It
- 9:46shows the former couple rehashing the relationship was almost twenty five years after their breakup.
- 9:52Called What Happens Later comes out October three. Well, it sounds exciting
- 9:56now, I think personally, and then you know, Brad Pitt was all
- 9:58the rage in the nineties, but I think it should have been It is
- 10:01easily David Dacovney. Well, Brad Pitt also a good name, but Dacovny
- 10:05is better. You know why I didn't fit in that Shania Twain song where
- 10:07she's like, so you think you're Brad. Imagine if she would have said,
- 10:09so you think you're David Dacovney. Actually we just fit it in.
- 10:13I think it works. She could have just said, so you think you're
- 10:16Dacovney. It's even better, so you think you're Fox Molder. Carment Elector
- 10:24says she gets a lot of requests on her only fans for feet picks is
- 10:26this adult themed music for me? Correct? Did you get this from one
- 10:31of your favorite films? Pizzas? She charges twenty five bucks for special requests,
- 10:37though it's free to subscribe to her page, which I have not done
- 10:39yet but maybe I will. You have not, well, twenty five bucks
- 10:43seems fair. I always wonder what the rates are on a website like that.
- 10:46You can always go look. Pike, fifty one year old former Playboy
- 10:48cover star, says she loves being in control of her racy snaps with only
- 10:52fans versus having Playboy or somebody in control of them. She says people are
- 10:54gonna do what they want to do anyway with her photos, so you might
- 10:56as well be in control with them and fall follow what you feel like doing
- 11:01inside. So what did she do? She was on Baywatch or what?
- 11:03I don't really know who she is. Carmen Electra. I've just always known
- 11:07the name. I know she's an attractive woman and a great name. Well,
- 11:11dudes of our age, right, that there was that was the list
- 11:13of women you were supposed to think we're super hot. It was Pam Anderson
- 11:16and Carmen Electra and that was like an so every somehow somebody's brother like told
- 11:20you that these were the girls were supposed to like. So then when you
- 11:22got to the age where you started liking girls, then it was like,
- 11:24yeah, these are the girls. Oh yeah. You know who I always
- 11:26longed for was Jennifer Love Hewitt still do yeah, boy. There was a
- 11:31handful of dudes back then too, just loved her. Yeah. I knew
- 11:35a couple of guys that were obsessed with her too. I see you know
- 11:37Brunette, so a little different category, but yeah, lovely woman, great
- 11:39in films, do boy, so start I know what she did last summer
- 11:46Scream three. She's great. Yeah. Nick Carter, a Backstreet Boys is
- 11:48facing a third sexual abuse lawsuit. This one is pretty gross the time,
- 11:54this time from a woman who claims that he assaulted her multiple times when she
- 11:56was just fifteen. Filed the suit day, claiming that the assaults happened in
- 12:01two thousand and three on a yacht and once on a tour bus. Carter
- 12:05was in his early twenties at the time, knowingly provided alcohol and drugs,
- 12:09these suit claims, and assaulted her despite her refusals and requests for him to
- 12:13stop, left her with all sorts of residual damage. Up to this day,
- 12:18he's already being sued by sexual assault from a couple of other people,
- 12:22and he's denying those accusations as I'm sure we'll deny this one as well,
- 12:24countersuing the other two women already for defamation. He's saying he's the victim of
- 12:28a conspiracy. Of course, what are you going to say? That's what
- 12:31they all say. He's gonna try to Kevin space yet and Spacey one,
- 12:35So I guess that's the move. I don't know, I guess, And
- 12:37I don't know if he's gonna ever be convicted or face any penalty at all,
- 12:41you know, but it's starting to add up where to the point where,
- 12:43yeah, he might have sucked. I'd like to see AJ McClean go
- 12:46clean up this mess away. Why is that? It seems like he seems
- 12:54like the one if he was going to enforce, like, you know,
- 12:56being an upstanding that sounds like a name the extra two between end sinc.
- 13:01I know, well, J C. Chase as sure isn't cleaning anything integracy?
- 13:05Can you confirmed? Yep? Backstreet points A J. McClean, did
- 13:09he ever do anything or he's like the Joey fatone of the backstreet points.

- 15:48was all I thought you were trying to call the game. Meanwhile, it's
- 15:52all knot up. Two to two said, that's game. Jesus Spielberg couldn't

- 16:26is going nuts with it. Congratulations, Rick, we got a great prize.
- 16:32We're gonna give that to you. Hang on for a second. And
- 16:33Devin, we just want to say thank you. You represented Fargo. Well
- 16:37it was close, but thank you for participating. Yea, thank you.
- 16:41Absolutely. It's a hometown throat end like none before. Like in a minute
- 16:47in the morning on Big Nutty eight point seven, I'd like to debunk a
- 16:49myth. I'd like to hear you do it. You've heard of the term
- 16:53beer goggles, I have, haven't you? This is where you know,
- 16:57after a few drinks, I think somebody who you normally would have found attractive
- 17:03is attractive. Well, it's been doing it for you. There's a new
- 17:06study out of New Jersey that found that men when given alcohol were not more
- 17:11likely to find somebody attractive than they would without the alcohol. But but what,
- 17:18Oh, I don't know. I thought there was felt like there was.
- 17:19I thought you were about to rebuttal the study out of New Jersey,
- 17:22and it makes sense to me. I feel like people I have always used
- 17:26this beer goggles phenomena as an excuse to mask their shame. I guess I
- 17:30think what it really is is not beer goggles as much as it is the
- 17:34propensity to just be more likely to engage in things. That's what it is.
- 17:38You're still going after the same folks, but you're more likely to talk
- 17:41to them and be like, yeah, you're just you're desire to achieve that
- 17:48level of intimacy. It's greater not for me, but for most people when
- 17:52field by alcohol. Yes. Correct. Also, the study found that men
- 17:55are twice as likely to approach someone they found especially attractive when alcohol is in
- 18:02their system. I nailed it, absolutely, That's what I'm saying you could
- 18:06have done the study in your sleep. This study seems very obvious. It's
- 18:08a good thing. Our tax dollars are going to it. By well in
- 18:11New Jersey's tacked. It appears just to be a state funded well study.
- 18:17Well, maybe there's beer goggles in North Dakota. We should all study it.
- 18:19Yeah, maybe we should go out tonight. You know, we haven't
- 18:22gone out in this town. You and I haven't really ripped up. We
- 18:25have it. No, you missed my beer goggles days where I know,
- 18:29Yeah, twenty thirteen. We were circling around each other at that time,
- 18:33were but we just never crossed paths a little inside. But James and I
- 18:34before we worked together years ago. Now we were competitors and I would see
- 18:38you at bars and I'd say, this gay the steak on this guy.
- 18:42I'll tell you what. It was a battleground. It was absolutely one time
- 18:48you headbutted me. Is that right? Yeah? Are you telling stories?
- 18:51Yeah? When did I head by you? It was twenty thirteen, you
- 18:53said, right, I just walked up to you, put my hand on
- 18:56your head. Yeah, I went ouch. But headbutting is just like almost
- 19:02a how do you do it without hurting yourself as much as the other person.
- 19:04You know what, if we're just going to derail this whole conversation,
- 19:07why not at this point the human skull is actually evolved to be harder right
- 19:14here on the forehead region because of the bashing our heads into stuff in each
- 19:18other. Oh but not the actual headbutt, but just you know, but
- 19:22generally that's why the headbutt is effective, because if you use that part of
- 19:25your head, it's not as likely to injure anything. Imagine just cracking your
- 19:29skull. You know what makes headbutting feel better? What alcohol? Browt it
- 19:34back around, just like that study out of you j like in a minute
- 19:38in the morning. Why wouldn't we go back down to the depths of the
- 19:45Titanic the wreck of the Titanic, because that's the plan for a Georgia based
- 19:52company r M. S. Titanic Incorporated. Makes me think their entire mission
- 19:56is Titanic related. Well, next year twenty t or they have plans to
- 20:00go down and enter the hull of the doomed ship and get some artifacts.
- 20:06Now enter United States governments. Are they looking for that blue diamond from the
- 20:11movie? Well, I thought the old lady threw it to the bottom of
- 20:14the ocean. Yeah, well, baby, I went down and got it.
- 20:18That's Britney spears deep cut reference. All right. Anyway, the United
- 20:21States government has stepped in saying, hey, we have a pact with Britain.
- 20:25Are you aware of this packed? We have and with Great Britain.
- 20:26Apparently there's a pack that's been made to leave the wreckage of the Titanic as
- 20:32is as some sort of memorial for those that lost their lives on that voyage
- 20:36crossing the Atlantic. What about the people in the sub that just died?
- 20:38What were they doing? Snooping around? I think I think I was a
- 20:41foreign affaret. I think that was out of a different country, this this
- 20:44little company. But it's like, why would you after what just happened?
- 20:48And first of all, had you forgotten about it already? What it was?
- 20:51It? Two months ago? That little thing imploded? Yeah, four
- 20:53people died or whatever, and we just totally have moved one. Would you
- 20:56go down there? Let me ask you that, would you go down if
- 20:59I wasn't breaking a pact with Britain? Yes, I would. I'm not
- 21:03I'm not. I'm not about to break a pact with Britain. Listen,
- 21:06I'd consider it enact of treason. I exactly if you did, I'm not
- 21:10gonna do that. Have some respect for it. But if the pact,
- 21:11you know, if there was some sort of you know, if if you
- 21:15know, King Charles signed off on it, or maybe Harry Styles signed off
- 21:18on it, you know, some of the leaders. It's just somebody right,
- 21:23Ed. She actually you know what I need, ed, Shearon hearing
- 21:26is the kind of England. Yeah, if ed, Shearon said, you
- 21:29know what, it's okay to go down to the Titanic and be like,
- 21:30thank you, Ed, and then I would go, let's be honest.
- 21:33A pact is like a hair above a pinky promise when it comes to keep
- 21:37it, you know, a promise. Where does that? Yeah, where
- 21:40does it stand to the rankings of like wedding vows packed meaningless meaning they just
- 21:45did. It's point, it's just a it's the thing you say. Have
- 21:47you sort entered a pact with a friend? I didn't. I know we're
- 21:49gonna make a pact. We used to make a pact. Every summer,
- 21:52there'd be a summer pact. Yeah, I don't know. We had a
- 21:56stupid little plan to I don't hang out. I think I was it.
- 22:00I think it was just gonna hang out. If you're the cutest childhood ever.
- 22:04I wish I had friends when I was a child. That would have
- 22:07been nice. You lonely man growing up? Yeah? Really, well,
- 22:11thank god we found you. Just me and the cows shoveling all of their
- 22:14extrement all summer, throwing bails around. It's gonna make you feel good,
- 22:18wildly strong, now, Pike, why I can tell see, this is
- 22:21why I need you to not go down to the Titanic, because we need
- 22:23you here. I want to go. We need your company. I want
- 22:26a boat. I want to get on a boat, drive one of those
- 22:27little subs. Obviously not from the one company. Are they still in business
- 22:33right? I thought they were hiring. Did you see that come in a
