Tess will not eat Pedigree. She will not eat Bakers, in any of its four piles. She looks at the happy dog on the Butcher's tin the way a food critic looks at a Pot Noodle.
So Ken does the big Tesco in Helsby, then Pets at Home, where everybody talks to the dog and nobody talks to him. He buys a bed she ignores, a ball launcher he swore he'd never own, and a name tag that runs out of characters. And on Friday night, for the first time in eleven years, somebody lets him finish.
