- 0:00Speaker 1: Chapter twelve, asking to give Christ was continually receiving from
- 0:05Speaker 1: the Father, that he might communicate to us. The word
- 0:08Speaker 1: which ye hear, he said, is not mine, but the
- 0:11Speaker 1: fathers which sent to me. The son of Man came
- 0:14Speaker 1: not to be ministered unto, but to minister, not for himself,
- 0:18Speaker 1: but for others. He lived in thought and prayed. From
- 0:21Speaker 1: hours spent with God, he came forth morning by morning
- 0:24Speaker 1: to bring the light of Heaven to men. Daily he
- 0:27Speaker 1: received a fresh baptism of the Holy Spirit. In the
- 0:31Speaker 1: early hours of the new day. The Lord awakened him
- 0:33Speaker 1: from his slumbers, and his soul and his lips were
- 0:35Speaker 1: anointed with grace that he might impart to others. His
- 0:39Speaker 1: words were given him fresh from the heavenly courts, words
- 0:42Speaker 1: that he might speak in season to the weary and oppressed.
- 0:46Speaker 1: The Lord God hath given me, He said, the tongue
- 0:48Speaker 1: of the learned, that I should know how to speak
- 0:50Speaker 1: a word in season to him that is weary. He
- 0:53Speaker 1: wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear
- 0:56Speaker 1: as the learned. Christ's disciples were much in pressed by
- 1:00Speaker 1: his prayers and by his habit of communion with God.
- 1:04Speaker 1: One day after a short absence from their Lord, they
- 1:06Speaker 1: found him absorbed in supplication. Seeming unconscious of their presence,
- 1:10Speaker 1: he continued praying aloud. The hearts of the disciples were
- 1:14Speaker 1: deeply moved. As he ceased praying, They exclaimed, Lord, teach
- 1:18Speaker 1: us to pray. In answer, Christ repeated the Lord's prayers
- 1:22Speaker 1: he had given it in the Sermon on the Mound. Then,
- 1:24Speaker 1: in a parable he illustrated the lesson he desired to
- 1:27Speaker 1: teach them. Which of you, he said, shall have a friend,
- 1:30Speaker 1: and shall go unto him at midnight and say unto him, friend,
- 1:33Speaker 1: lend me three loaves. For a friend of mine in
- 1:36Speaker 1: his journey has come to me, and I have nothing
- 1:37Speaker 1: to set before him. And he from within shall answer
- 1:41Speaker 1: and say, trouble me not. The door is now shut,
- 1:44Speaker 1: and my children are with me in bed. I cannot
- 1:46Speaker 1: rise and give thee I say unto you, though he
- 1:49Speaker 1: will not rise and give him because he is his friend.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Yet because of his importunity, he will rise and give
- 1:55Speaker 1: him as many as he needeth. Here Christ represents the
- 1:58Speaker 1: petitioner as asking that he may give again. He must
- 2:02Speaker 1: obtain the bread, else he cannot supply the necessities of
- 2:05Speaker 1: a weary belated wayfarer. Though his neighbor is unwilling to
- 2:08Speaker 1: be troubled, he will not desist his pleading. His friend
- 2:11Speaker 1: must be relieved, and at last his importunity is rewarded.
- 2:15Speaker 1: His wants are supplied. In like manner, The disciples were
- 2:19Speaker 1: to seek blessings from God in the feeding of the multitude,
- 2:22Speaker 1: and in the Sermon on the Bread from Heaven. Christ
- 2:24Speaker 1: had opened to them their work as his representatives. They
- 2:28Speaker 1: were to give the bread of life to the people.
- 2:30Speaker 1: He who had appointed their work, saw how often their
- 2:33Speaker 1: faith would be tried. Often they would be thrown into
- 2:36Speaker 1: unexpected positions and would realize their human insufficiency. Souls that
- 2:41Speaker 1: were hungering for the bread of life would come to them,
- 2:43Speaker 1: and they would feel themselves to be destitute and helpless.
- 2:46Speaker 1: They must receive spiritual food or they would have nothing
- 2:49Speaker 1: to impart. But they were not to turn one soul
- 2:52Speaker 1: away unfed. Christ directs them to the source of supply.
- 2:57Speaker 1: The men whose friend came to him for entertainment, even
- 2:59Speaker 1: at the unseasonable hour of midnight, did not turn him away.
- 3:03Speaker 1: He had nothing to said before him, but he went
- 3:05Speaker 1: to one who had food and pressed his request until
- 3:07Speaker 1: the neighbor supplied his need, and would not God, who
- 3:10Speaker 1: had set his servants to feed the hungry, supply their
- 3:13Speaker 1: need for his own work. But the selfish neighbor in
- 3:16Speaker 1: the parable does not represent the character of God. The
- 3:19Speaker 1: lesson is drawn not by comparison, but by contrast. A
- 3:23Speaker 1: selfish man were grant an urgent request in order to
- 3:26Speaker 1: rid himself of one who disturbs his rest. But God
- 3:29Speaker 1: delights to give. He is full of compassion, and he
- 3:32Speaker 1: longs to grant the requests of those who come unto him.
- 3:34Speaker 1: In faith. He gives to us that we may minister
- 3:37Speaker 1: to others and thus become like himself. Christ declares, ask,
- 3:42Speaker 1: and it shall be given. You seekin ye shall find knock,
- 3:45Speaker 1: and it shall be opened unto you. For every one
- 3:48Speaker 1: that asketh receiveth, and he that seeketh findeth. Unto him
- 3:51Speaker 1: that knocketh, it shall be opened. The Savior continues. If
- 3:55Speaker 1: a son shall ask bread of any of you that
- 3:57Speaker 1: is a father, will he give him a stone? Or
- 3:59Speaker 1: if he asks a fish, will he for a fish
- 4:01Speaker 1: give him a serpent? Or if he shall ask an egg,
- 4:04Speaker 1: will he offer to him a scorpion? If ye, then,
- 4:07Speaker 1: being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children,
- 4:10Speaker 1: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy
- 4:12Speaker 1: Spirit to them that ask him. In order to strengthen
- 4:16Speaker 1: our confidence in God, Christ teaches us to address him
- 4:19Speaker 1: by a new name, a name entwined with the dearest
- 4:22Speaker 1: associations of the human heart. He gives us the privilege
- 4:25Speaker 1: of calling the infinite God our father. This name, spoken
- 4:29Speaker 1: to him and of him, is a sign of our
- 4:31Speaker 1: love and trust toward him, in a pledge of his
- 4:33Speaker 1: regard and relationship to us, spoken when asking his favor
- 4:38Speaker 1: or blessing. It is his music in his ears that
- 4:40Speaker 1: we might not think it presumption to call him by
- 4:43Speaker 1: this name. He has repeated it again and again. He
- 4:48Speaker 1: desires us to become familiar with the appellation. God regards
- 4:52Speaker 1: us as his children. He has redeemed us out of
- 4:54Speaker 1: the careless world and has chosen us to become members
- 4:57Speaker 1: of the royal family, sons and daughters of the heavenly King.
- 5:01Speaker 1: He invites us to trust in Him, with the trust
- 5:03Speaker 1: deeper and stronger than that of a child in his
- 5:06Speaker 1: earthly father. Parents love their children, but the love of
- 5:10Speaker 1: God is larger, broader, deeper than human love can possibly be.
- 5:15Speaker 1: It is immeasurable. Then if earthly parents know how to
- 5:18Speaker 1: give good gifts to their children, how much more shall
- 5:20Speaker 1: our Father in Heaven give the Holy Spirit to those
- 5:22Speaker 1: who ask him. Christ's lessons in regard to prayer should
- 5:26Speaker 1: be carefully considered. There is a divine science in prayer,
- 5:30Speaker 1: and his illustration brings to view principles that all need
- 5:33Speaker 1: to understand. He shows what is the true spirit of prayer.
- 5:37Speaker 1: He teaches the necessity of perseverance in presenting our requests
- 5:41Speaker 1: to God, and assures us of his willingness to hear
- 5:43Speaker 1: and answer prayer. Our prayers are not to be a
- 5:47Speaker 1: selfish asking merely for our own benefit. We are to
- 5:50Speaker 1: ask that we may give the principle of Christ's life
- 5:54Speaker 1: must be the principle of our lives for their sakes.
- 5:58Speaker 1: He said, speaking of his disciples, I sanctify myself that
- 6:01Speaker 1: they also might be sanctified. This same devotion, this same
- 6:05Speaker 1: self sacrifice, this same subjection to the claims of the
- 6:08Speaker 1: Word of God that were manifest in Christ, must be
- 6:12Speaker 1: seen in his servants. Our mission to the world is
- 6:15Speaker 1: not to serve or please ourselves. We are to glorify
- 6:18Speaker 1: God by cooperating with him to save sinners. We are
- 6:21Speaker 1: to ask blessings from God that we may communicate to others.
- 6:25Speaker 1: The capacity for receiving is preserved only by imparting. We
- 6:29Speaker 1: cannot continue to receive heavenly treasure without communicating to those
- 6:32Speaker 1: around us. In the parable, the petitioner was again and
- 6:36Speaker 1: again repulsed, but he did not relinquish his purpose. So
- 6:40Speaker 1: our prayers do not always seem to receive an immediate answer.
- 6:43Speaker 1: But Christ teaches that we should not cease to pray.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Prayer is not to work any change in God. It
- 6:49Speaker 1: is to bring us into harmony with God. When we
- 6:52Speaker 1: make request of him, he may see that it is
- 6:54Speaker 1: necessary for us to search our hearts and repent of sin.
- 6:58Speaker 1: Therefore He takes us through tests and trial. He brings
- 7:01Speaker 1: us through humiliation that we may see what hinders the
- 7:04Speaker 1: working of His Holy Spirit through us. There are conditions
- 7:08Speaker 1: to the fulfillment of God's promises, and prayer can never
- 7:10Speaker 1: take the place of duty. If ye love me, Christ says,
- 7:14Speaker 1: keep my commendments. He that hath my commendments and keepeth them.
- 7:18Speaker 1: He it is that loveth me, and he that loveth
- 7:20Speaker 1: me shall be loved of my Father. And I will
- 7:22Speaker 1: love him and will manifest myself to him. Those who
- 7:27Speaker 1: bring their petitions to God claiming his promise, while they
- 7:29Speaker 1: do not comply with the conditions, insult Jehovah. They bring
- 7:33Speaker 1: the name of Christ as their authority for the fulfillment
- 7:36Speaker 1: of the promise, but they do not those things that
- 7:38Speaker 1: would show faith in Christ and love for him. Many
- 7:42Speaker 1: are forfeiting the condition of acceptance with the Father. We
- 7:45Speaker 1: need to examine closely the deed of trust wherewith we
- 7:48Speaker 1: approach God. If we are disobedient, we bring to the
- 7:51Speaker 1: Lord a note to be cashed when we have not
- 7:53Speaker 1: fulfilled the conditions that would make it payable to us.
- 7:56Speaker 1: We present to God his promises and ask him to
- 7:59Speaker 1: fulfill them, when by deday doing so he would dishonor
- 8:01Speaker 1: his own name. The promise is, if ye abide in
- 8:04Speaker 1: Me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask
- 8:06Speaker 1: what ye will, and it should be done unto you.
- 8:09Speaker 1: And John declares hereby we do know that we know
- 8:12Speaker 1: him if we keep his commandments. He that saith I
- 8:15Speaker 1: know him and keepeth not his commandments is a liar,
- 8:17Speaker 1: And the truth is not in him. But whoso keepeth
- 8:20Speaker 1: his word in him verily is the love of God perfected.
- 8:24Speaker 1: One of Christ's last commands to his disciples was love
- 8:27Speaker 1: one another as I have loved you. Do we obey
- 8:30Speaker 1: this command? Or are we indulging in un christ like
- 8:32Speaker 1: traits of character? If we have in any way grieved
- 8:36Speaker 1: or wounded others, it is our duty to confess our
- 8:38Speaker 1: fault and seek for reconciliation. This is an essential preparation
- 8:42Speaker 1: that we may come before God in faith to ask
- 8:44Speaker 1: his blessing. There is another matter, too often neglected by
- 8:48Speaker 1: those who seek the Lord in prayer. Have you been
- 8:51Speaker 1: honest with God? By the prophet Malachi, the Lord declares,
- 8:55Speaker 1: even from the days of your father's you are gone
- 8:57Speaker 1: away from mine ordinances and have not kept them. Return
- 9:01Speaker 1: unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the
- 9:03Speaker 1: Lord of Hosts. But ye say wherein shall we return?
- 9:08Speaker 1: Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me?
- 9:11Speaker 1: But ye say wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes
- 9:14Speaker 1: and offerings? As the giver of every blessing, God claims
- 9:19Speaker 1: a certain portion of all we possess. This is his
- 9:22Speaker 1: provision to sustain the preaching of the Gospel, and by
- 9:25Speaker 1: making this return to God we are to show our
- 9:27Speaker 1: appreciation of his gifts. But if we withhold from him
- 9:31Speaker 1: that which is his own, how can we claim his blessing?
- 9:34Speaker 1: If we are unfaithful stewards of earthly things, how can
- 9:37Speaker 1: we expect him to entrust us with the things of heaven.
- 9:40Speaker 1: It may be that here is the secret of unanswered prayer.
- 9:44Speaker 1: But the Lord, in his great mercy, is ready to forgive.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And he says, bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse,
- 9:50Speaker 1: that there may be meet in mine house, and prove
- 9:53Speaker 1: me now herewith If I will not open you the
- 9:56Speaker 1: windows of heaven and pour you out of blessing, that
- 9:58Speaker 1: there shall not be room enough to to receive it.
- 10:01Speaker 1: And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes. And
- 10:03Speaker 1: he shall not destroy the fruits of your ground. Neither
- 10:06Speaker 1: shall your vine cast your fruit before the time in
- 10:09Speaker 1: the field. And all nations shall call you blessed, for
- 10:13Speaker 1: ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts.
- 10:17Speaker 1: So it is with every other one of God's requirements.
- 10:19Speaker 1: All his gifts are promised on condition of obedience. God
- 10:23Speaker 1: has a heaven full of blessings for those who will
- 10:25Speaker 1: cooperate with him. All who obey him may with confidence
- 10:29Speaker 1: claim the fulfillment of his promises. But we must show
- 10:32Speaker 1: a firm, undeviating trust in God. Often he delays to
- 10:36Speaker 1: answer us in order to try our faith or test
- 10:38Speaker 1: the genuineness of our desire. Having asked according to his word,
- 10:43Speaker 1: we should believe his promise and press our petitions with
- 10:45Speaker 1: a determination that will not be denied. God does not say,
- 10:50Speaker 1: ask once, and ye shall receive. He bids us ask
- 10:54Speaker 1: unwearyingly persist in prayer. Persistent asking brings the petitioner into
- 10:59Speaker 1: a more earnest addayitude and gives him an increased desire
- 11:01Speaker 1: to receive the things for which he asks. Christ said
- 11:05Speaker 1: to Martha the Grave of Lazarus, if thou wouldst believe,
- 11:08Speaker 1: thou should see the glory of God. But many have
- 11:12Speaker 1: not a living faith. This is why they do not
- 11:14Speaker 1: see more of the power of God. Their weakness is
- 11:18Speaker 1: the result of their unbelief. They have more faith in
- 11:21Speaker 1: their own working than in the working of God. For
- 11:23Speaker 1: them they take themselves into their own keeping. They plan
- 11:27Speaker 1: and devise, but pray little, and have little real trust
- 11:30Speaker 1: in God. They think they have faith, but it is
- 11:33Speaker 1: only the impulse of the moment. Failing to realize their
- 11:37Speaker 1: own need or God's willingness to give, they do not
- 11:40Speaker 1: persevere in keeping their requests before the Lord. Our prayers
- 11:44Speaker 1: are to be as earnest and persistent as was the
- 11:46Speaker 1: petition of the needy friend who ask for the loaves
- 11:48Speaker 1: at midnight. The more earnestly and steadfastly we ask, the
- 11:52Speaker 1: closer will be our spiritual union with Christ. We shall
- 11:56Speaker 1: receive increased blessings because we have increased faith. Our part
- 12:01Speaker 1: is to pray and believe, watch unto prayer, watch and
- 12:05Speaker 1: co operate with the prayer hearing God. Bear in mind
- 12:08Speaker 1: that we are laborers together with God. Speak and act
- 12:11Speaker 1: in harmony with your prayers. It will make an infinite
- 12:14Speaker 1: difference with you whether trials to prove your faith to
- 12:16Speaker 1: be genuine or show that your prayers are only a form.
- 12:20Speaker 1: When perplexities arise and difficulties confront you look not for
- 12:24Speaker 1: help to humanity, trust all with God. The practice of
- 12:28Speaker 1: telling our difficulties to others only makes us weak and
- 12:30Speaker 1: brings no strength to them. It lays upon them the
- 12:34Speaker 1: burden of our spiritual infirmities, which they cannot relieve. We
- 12:37Speaker 1: seek the strength of erring finite man, when we might
- 12:40Speaker 1: have the strength of the unerring, infinite God. You need
- 12:44Speaker 1: not to go to the ends of the earth for wisdom,
- 12:46Speaker 1: for God is near. It is not the capabilities you
- 12:49Speaker 1: now possess, or ever will have, that will give you success.
- 12:53Speaker 1: It is that which the Lord can do for you.
- 12:56Speaker 1: We need to have far less confidence in what man
- 12:59Speaker 1: can do, and far more confidence in what God can do.
- 13:01Speaker 1: For every believing soul, He longs to have you reach
- 13:05Speaker 1: after him by faith. He longs to give you understanding
- 13:08Speaker 1: in temporal as well as in spiritual matters. He can
- 13:11Speaker 1: sharpen the intellect he can give tact and skill. Put
- 13:15Speaker 1: your talents into the work. Ask God for wisdom and
- 13:18Speaker 1: it will be given. You. Take the word of Christ
- 13:21Speaker 1: as your assurance. Has He not invited you to come
- 13:24Speaker 1: to him? Never allow yourself to talk in a hopeless,
- 13:27Speaker 1: discouraged way. If you do, you will lose much By
- 13:31Speaker 1: looking at appearances and complaining when difficulties and pressure come.
- 13:34Speaker 1: You give evidence of a sickly enfeebled faith. Talk and
- 13:38Speaker 1: act as if your faith was invincible. The Lord is
- 13:41Speaker 1: rich in resources, He owns the world. Look heavenward in faith.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Look to him who has light and power and efficiency.
- 13:50Speaker 1: There is in genuine faith a buoyancy, a steadfastness of principle,
- 13:54Speaker 1: and affixedness of purpose that neither time nor toil can weaken.
- 13:59Speaker 1: Even the youth shall faint and be weary, and the
- 14:01Speaker 1: young men shall utterly fall. But they that wait upon
- 14:04Speaker 1: the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall man up
- 14:07Speaker 1: with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary,
- 14:11Speaker 1: and they shall walk and not faint. There are many
- 14:14Speaker 1: who long to help others, but they feel that they
- 14:16Speaker 1: have no spiritual strength or light to impart. Let them
- 14:19Speaker 1: present their petitions at the Throne of Grace. Plead for
- 14:23Speaker 1: the Holy Spirit. God stands back of every promise he
- 14:26Speaker 1: has made. With your Bible in your hands. Say I
- 14:29Speaker 1: have done as thou hast said. I present thy promise,
- 14:32Speaker 1: Ask and it shall be given. You Seek and ye
- 14:35Speaker 1: shall find. Knock and it shall be opened unto you.
- 14:38Speaker 1: We must not only pray in Christ's name, but by
- 14:41Speaker 1: the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. This explains what is
- 14:44Speaker 1: meant when it is said that the Spirit maketh intercession
- 14:47Speaker 1: for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Such prayer.
- 14:50Speaker 1: God delights to answer when with earnestness and intensity we
- 14:54Speaker 1: breathe a prayer in the name of Christ. There is
- 14:57Speaker 1: in that very intensity a pledge from God that He
- 14:59Speaker 1: is about to answer our prayer exceedingly abundantly, above all
- 15:02Speaker 1: that we ask or think. Christ has said, what things
- 15:06Speaker 1: soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them,
- 15:09Speaker 1: and ye shall have them. Whatsoever ye shall ask in
- 15:12Speaker 1: my name, that I will do that the Father may
- 15:14Speaker 1: be glorified in the sun. And the beloved John, under
- 15:18Speaker 1: the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, speaks with great plainness
- 15:21Speaker 1: and assurance. If we ask anything according to his will,
- 15:24Speaker 1: he heareth us. And if we know that he hear
- 15:27Speaker 1: us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the
- 15:30Speaker 1: petitions that we desired of him. Then press your petition
- 15:34Speaker 1: to the Father in the name of Jesus. God will
- 15:37Speaker 1: honor that name. The rainbow round about the throne is
- 15:40Speaker 1: an assurance that God is true, that in him is
- 15:43Speaker 1: no variableness, neither shadow of turning. We have sinned against
- 15:48Speaker 1: Him and are undeserving of his favor. Yet He himself
- 15:51Speaker 1: has put into our lips that most wonderful of Please
- 15:54Speaker 1: do not abhor us for thy name's sake. Do not
- 15:57Speaker 1: disgrace the throne of Thy glory. Remember, break not thy
- 16:01Speaker 1: covenant with us. When we come to him confessing our
- 16:04Speaker 1: unworthiness and sin. He has pledged himself to give heed
- 16:07Speaker 1: to our cry. The honor of his throne is staked
- 16:11Speaker 1: for the fulfillment of his word. Unto us. Like Aaron,
- 16:15Speaker 1: who symbolize Christ, our Savior bears the names of all
- 16:18Speaker 1: his people on his heart. In the holy Place, our
- 16:21Speaker 1: great High Priest remembers all the words by which he
- 16:24Speaker 1: has encouraged us to trust. He is ever mindful of
- 16:27Speaker 1: his covenant. All who seek of him shall find. All
- 16:31Speaker 1: who knocked will have the door open to them. The
- 16:34Speaker 1: excuse will not be made trouble me not. The door
- 16:37Speaker 1: is closed. I do not wish to open it. Never
- 16:40Speaker 1: will one be told I cannot help you. Those who
- 16:43Speaker 1: beg at midnight for loaves to feed the hungry souls
- 16:46Speaker 1: will be successful in the parable. He who asks bread
- 16:49Speaker 1: for the stranger receives as many as he needeth. And
- 16:53Speaker 1: in what measure will God impart to us that we
- 16:55Speaker 1: may impart to others according to the measure of the
- 16:58Speaker 1: gift of Christ. Angels are watching with intense interest to
- 17:02Speaker 1: see how man is dealing with his fellow men. When
- 17:05Speaker 1: they see one manifest christ like sympathy for the erring,
- 17:08Speaker 1: they press to his side and bring to his remembrance
- 17:10Speaker 1: words to speak that will be as the bread of
- 17:12Speaker 1: life to the soul. So God shall supply all your
- 17:16Speaker 1: need according to His riches and glory. By Christ Jesus,
- 17:19Speaker 1: your testimony in its genuineness and reality, He will make
- 17:22Speaker 1: powerful in the power of the life to come. The
- 17:25Speaker 1: word of the Lord will be your mouth as truth
- 17:27Speaker 1: and righteousness. Personal effort for others should be preceded by
- 17:31Speaker 1: much secret prayer, for it requires great wisdom to understand
- 17:35Speaker 1: the science of saving souls. Before communicating with men, commune
- 17:39Speaker 1: with Christ at the throne of heavenly grace. Obtain a
- 17:42Speaker 1: preparation for ministering to the people. Let your heart break
- 17:46Speaker 1: for the longing it has for God. For the living God,
- 17:49Speaker 1: the life of Christ has shown what humanity can do
