- 0:34Very exciting for you guys. So please subscribe to us on
- 0:37YouTube. We are so close.
- 0:38And also on Tuesday, we had 100,000 followers on TikTok, on
- 0:42the Centennial World Podcast Network TikTok account, which is
- 0:45so exciting. Possibly two big following
- 0:47milestones happening this week. All right, let's get into the
- 0:51stories for today. So the first story, I do need to
- 0:53issue a big trigger warning. We're going to be talking about
- 0:56suicide and cyberbullying in this story.
- 0:58Influencer Michaela Raines of Sava Fox has sadly taken her own
- 1:02life at the age of 29 after being cyber bullied.
- 1:06So Michaela Raines is a 29 year old activist who documented her
- 1:10experience operating a nonprofit rescue organization called Sava
- 1:14Fox. She founded the organization in
- 1:162017 at just 20 years old after finding an interest in
- 1:19rehabilitating animals as a teenager and she had a huge
- 1:23online following. She built her account to over
- 1:253,000,000 followers on TikTok and 2.4 million subscribers on
- 1:30YouTube, and in total, the organization had saved more than
- 1:33150 foxes. Tragically, earlier this week,
- 1:37her husband Ethan Raines shared that Michaela had taken her own
- 1:40life largely due to the cyber bullying from people online,
- 1:44many of whom she knew, but some whom she didn't.
- 1:47For her entire life, she struggled.
- 1:50She struggled with autism, with depression, with borderline
- 1:53personality disorder and more. And she was so sensitive.
- 1:58It's everything. Which is a double edged sword
- 2:00because on one hand it allowed her endless empathy for those in
- 2:04her care, but it also means that she took everything negative to
- 2:08heart. And now I want to talk about how
- 2:10words, whether spoken in person or written online, can affect
- 2:15someone. For a few years, a group of
- 2:18people had been throwing dirt on Michaela's name and the rescue.
- 2:23Most of these are people she knew, and some of them are other
- 2:25animal sanctuaries. They consistently spread
- 2:29ridiculous claims and rumors. And being the sensitive human
- 2:32that she was, Michaela took it all to heart.
- 2:36And to those of you that pushed her to this, everyone of you
- 2:41that had been responsible for making her feel this way, if you
- 2:44only have negative garbage to say, just shut up.
- 2:47OK, this is obviously so sad and I wanted to talk about it
- 2:52because it aligns with the discussions that we were having
- 2:54last week around Tattle Life and online snarking and online
- 2:59bullying. There's still a lot of
- 3:01discussion going on about the whole Tattle Life situation.
- 3:04I know a lot of users are worried that their identities
- 3:07could be exposed. Now people are having a hard
- 3:10time deleting their accounts because people are worried about
- 3:12like, what the fate of that website is going to be, and they
- 3:16want to delete their comments, their entire accounts.
- 3:18And people are having a hard time doing that.
- 3:21And there's also a lot of people discussing why they snark
- 3:25anonymously, like tattlers have taken to Reddit to share, like
- 3:29why they feel justified in being part of Tattle Life.
- 3:32Obviously, there's such a spotlight on Tattle Life
- 3:34specifically right now. I don't think that Michaela was
- 3:37largely bullied on Tattle Life, but I'm just kind of tying it
- 3:41back to the broader discussion of what we've been talking
- 3:43about. So the main things that people
- 3:46are saying on Reddit about why they do Anonymous, Stark, Tattle
- 3:50Life, whatever, any of those websites, there's a lot of
- 3:53justification by saying that they're trying to bring
- 3:55awareness to child protection online.
- 3:58A lot of the female influencers that get snarked on have
- 4:01children and they post their kids online.
- 4:03So people use that as kind of like a justification to be mean
- 4:06to them. And they also say it's to hold
- 4:08influencers accountable and keep them in line until laws and
- 4:11regulations and things like that catch up.
- 4:14The thing is, because posting mean comments about people
- 4:18anonymously on the Internet isn't doing any of those things.
- 4:22Like if you really care about holding a creator responsible
- 4:25for spreading misinformation for example, or not disclosing ads
- 4:29or posting their kids online, either advocate publicly with
- 4:33your whole self so you can actually make some change and
- 4:37get people to join you in this, or go to the appropriate
- 4:41governing bodies and report them.
- 4:43It's the anonymity that that can make this really snowball from
- 4:47like, you know, just being concerned about something to
- 4:50then it really snowballing into, like, harassment, abuse, doxing.
- 4:54And it snowballs into this, like, total lack of boundaries
- 4:57about how people talk about creators and celebrities and
- 5:00public figures and what they're willing to post about them.
- 5:04Like, would you dock someone with your whole face and your
- 5:07whole personhood behind that comment?
- 5:10Probably not. And my head's not in the sand.
- 5:12OK. You know, I talked about this
- 5:14with the title Life Story last week, but like I understand that
- 5:16pop culture reporting all of this commentary stuff like all
- 5:20of this contributes to a very toxic space online for creators
- 5:23and celebrities. Like I understand like we have a
- 5:26role to play in that as well. But I wanted to read this
- 5:29comment from Reddit. So it was from the LA influencer
- 5:32snark Reddit and I thought this comment was so good.
- 5:35So this was on a subreddit post about Michaela's suicide.
- 5:38My hot take is when you delineate between bullying and
- 5:41calling out problematic behavior like this, people will just
- 5:44reach for increasingly thin socio political critiques to
- 5:47justify the shallow bullying they actually want to do.
- 5:51Saying 1 is OK but the other isn't just gives people cover to
- 5:54say whatever they want as long as they can come up with the
- 5:56thinnest excuse as to why the target is ontologically evil and
- 6:00deserved it. If influencers are actually
- 6:03racist or sexist, unfollow them, block them, and stop talking
- 6:07about them. That actually hurts their bottom
- 6:09line. Hate following and snarking
- 6:11online does nothing practical to shrink their platform and in
- 6:14fact just drives more people to view their content.
- 6:17They keep going and then they end with snarking.
- 6:19It does nothing to actually stop tangibly racist, sexist, or
- 6:23otherwise shitty influencers from profiting.
- 6:26Shrinking their audience does snark culture just gives the
- 6:29participants a self-righteous head rush from being on the
- 6:32right side while literally continuing to perpetuate the
- 6:35problem through clicks and views.
- 6:37I thought that comment was something to think about for
- 6:39sure. Michaela's husband has said that
- 6:41he will continue her work with her foundation, her nonprofit in
- 6:46her honor. So sad.
- 6:49All right, let's get into the next story for today.
- 6:51TikTok creator Courtney Joelle is going viral for sharing her
- 6:55version of quote UN quote Princess treatment on a dinner
- 6:58date with her husband. Courtney Joelle is a creator who
- 7:01posts about what she calls housewife Princess content.
- 7:05She's going super viral right now because she posted this
- 7:07unhinged video where she describes this like in my
- 7:11opinion, creepy dinner date that she had with her husband where
- 7:15she doesn't speak to the wait staff because it's like
- 7:19masculine energy and she reserves that for her husband.
- 7:22Let's talk about Princess treatment if you're at a
- 7:24restaurant and how you interact with the wait staff and the
- 7:27Hostess. If I am at a restaurant with my
- 7:29husband, I do not talk to the Hostess.
- 7:31I do not open many doors, and I do not order my own food.
- 7:34So someone had sent me a message a couple weeks ago asking about
- 7:37like, let's say your husband drops you off and he goes to
- 7:41park the car. What do you do?
- 7:42Or if it's raining or something like that and he wants you to
- 7:44put your name down. And I had a very similar
- 7:46situation happened to me with my husband a couple weeks ago.
- 7:49I'll put her question on the screen so you can see exactly
- 7:51what she's saying. But we didn't have a reservation
- 7:53so we wanted to go up and see if it was possible for us to get
- 7:55in. He pulled the car up at the
- 7:57valet station. He got, I stayed in the car.
- 8:00He got out of the car, told the valet, I'm just going to run in
- 8:02and ask a question, I'm going to leave my car here.
- 8:04I sat in the car. Well, he ran in and asked them.
- 8:07They said, yeah, we have space for you.
- 8:08And my husband said, OK, I'm going to go get my wife and then
- 8:12I'm going to park the car. So he comes back out, opens my
- 8:14car door, walks me into the restaurant, opens the door and I
- 8:18stand and wait. I did not make eye contact with
- 8:20the Hostess. I did not talk to her.
- 8:22I waited until my husband came back.
- 8:24He comes back, does the exchange with her, and then we went and
- 8:27sat down. It's not in any sense like
- 8:29you're better than the Hostess. You're just letting your husband
- 8:32lead and be vasculine. So Princess content is like the
- 8:37step before trad wife content. OK?
- 8:40Like women get swept into the alt right pipeline through this
- 8:43type of content. And this is one of those
- 8:46markers. She's not quite trad wife yet
- 8:48because she doesn't do the housework.
- 8:51You know, she's not like barefoot pregnant in the kitchen
- 8:53making her own sourdough vibes. She actually says that she has
- 8:56house cleaning staff. So she basically just like
- 8:59chills and works out all day and obviously makes content.
- 9:02And there are so many creators who are selling this exact
- 9:05lifestyle to young women on TikTok.
- 9:07This like, soft life, feminine energy, Princess treatment life
- 9:14where they're saying find a man to take care of you and you
- 9:17don't have to do anything. And yeah, like, I get it.
- 9:20Most people don't want to work so I get the idea of being taken
- 9:24care of and how nice that sounds to most people.
- 9:27But there is a reason why women fought for the right to work.
- 9:32We need access to resources, money, autonomy, human rights
- 9:37like it is. It should not be lost on any of
- 9:39us that women were only allowed bank accounts in like the 70s.
- 9:44Like if I was trying to run this business, I don't know, even
- 9:47probably 30 years ago, I mean, we're almost in 20-30, so that's
- 9:51kind of crazy. But like 50 years ago, like, I
- 9:52probably would have never been able to get a bank loan, any
- 9:55type of financing. I mean, this business just like
- 9:57wouldn't exist because I'm a woman, OK?
- 9:59Like it cannot be lost on us that there is a reason why women
- 10:03fought for these things. And I don't know if we're just
- 10:06like too far removed from that reality that we're like going,
- 10:10you know, backwards. And I understand a lot of this
- 10:13kind of soft, like it's like find a rich man to take care of
- 10:15you vibe. I get that.
- 10:16That's also in response to the girl boss movement that was so
- 10:20assertive and was really like, women can do anything.
- 10:23And you just need to be in that boardroom with men and like you
- 10:25need to have this masculine energy.
- 10:26Like the girl boss movement didn't really go very well for a
- 10:29lot of women. So I understand that there is
- 10:31now this kind of pendulum swing that is like so far and so
- 10:34extreme. And obviously everything's going
- 10:37right wing. All right, ANYWAYS, so it all
- 10:39makes sense. But yeah, like, this video is
- 10:41going viral for, I mean, in my opinion, the right reasons.
- 10:44People are watching it and commenting on it being like, no,
- 10:47girl, what are you talking about?
- 10:49This is so crazy. And there are also so many older
- 10:52women commenting on these videos from young women being like, I
- 10:55was you, Like, I was the young wife.
- 10:58I was the one who was like, had the Princess treatment, the soft
- 11:00life. My husband took care of us.
- 11:02And then 20 years in, he left me.
- 11:05And I had no credentials. I hadn't been in the workforce
- 11:07in 20 years. Like, I was absolutely fucked.
- 11:09And I had no money. And like, we need to listen to
- 11:11those stories. Like I know when you're younger,
- 11:13you feel like, Oh my God, is an older person have to say to me,
- 11:16like, that's going to be valid. But like the older I get, the
- 11:18more I'm like, Oh my God, I want to talk to all of the older
- 11:21women ever. Like I'm so interested in
- 11:23hearing their perspectives and their advice because they have
- 11:26the wisdom, you know, and they know what's going on.
- 11:29But anyways, also, like in this particular scenario, OK, like I
- 11:32don't know any grown men who would want their wife to act
- 11:37like this. Like even my friends who have
- 11:40partners that I would consider like misogynistic pigs, like men
- 11:43that I do not consider to be like good guys, like none of
- 11:46them would want their wives to act like this.
- 11:49You have to think what kind of man wants a wife who
- 11:52relinquishes all autonomy in public when she's with him, A
- 11:57man who is scary and controlling.
- 12:00We talk so much right now in the cultural zeitgeist about men
- 12:03falling down the alt right pipeline, but we don't talk
- 12:06enough about women and how these types of videos and this type of
- 12:10content is like the precursor to that.
- 12:13You know, like, yes, of course we've all talked about like trad
- 12:15wifes and like obviously we know that trad wife is on that
- 12:18pipeline is far down that pipeline.
- 12:20OK, But like, what are the kind of earlier signs of that?
- 12:23Like what are the earlier markers, the earlier entries
- 12:26into it before you get to like full blown pregnant, barefoot in
- 12:30a kitchen making sourdough. All right.
- 12:31And the last story that I have for you guys is that Haley
- 12:33Bieber has indirectly shut down divorce rumors after she was
- 12:37spotted in New York City over the weekend without her wedding
- 12:40ring. We know there are rumors about
- 12:42Justin and Haley and like what's going on in their marriage.
- 12:44And I am trying really hard not to report on them because I
- 12:47don't know, it feels icky. I think it's very obvious that
- 12:49Justin is like, going through something and therefore their
- 12:52marriage is going through something.
- 12:53But over the weekend, obviously, Haley stepped out, like I said,
- 12:56without her wedding ring. And that just, like, sounded
- 12:58alarm bells. Like people lost their minds
- 13:01because there's been all the speculation for so long.
- 13:04And all these sources are coming out saying, yes, Haley's going
- 13:07to leave Justin. And then she spotted paparazzi
- 13:10without her wedding ring. She was like going out.
- 13:12OK. So people were like, oh, my God.
- 13:13A couple days later, Haley seemingly shut down these
- 13:16rumors. She took a mirror selfie where
- 13:17you can very obviously see her wedding ring.
- 13:20And then she also stepped out again wearing her ring as well.
- 13:23But the tides are really starting to turn against Justin
- 13:28and towards Haley. You know, for the vast majority
- 13:31of their relationship, the Internet and fans have largely
- 13:34been on like Team Justin, Team Selena.
- 13:36And obviously Haley has just been like one of the most hated
- 13:39women on the Internet for so long.
- 13:41And I would say in the last maybe like 6 months now that we
- 13:45can really see how Justin is treating her as the mother of
- 13:47his child, people are starting to turn against Justin and see
- 13:51Haley in a different life. There's all these videos that
- 13:54are just going super viral right now on TikTok of like
- 13:57compilations of Justin just like treating Haley like trash.
- 14:01And everyone's like, oh, maybe if it wasn't Justin Bieber, the
- 14:07conversation, the narrative around this relationship in the
- 14:09public eye would be a little bit different.
- 14:11But Justin just has, like, such a stronghold on this very large
- 14:16cohort of young fans, and that has largely shaped the narrative
- 14:21for so long. But, yeah, I think it is
- 14:23starting to turn a little bit. And, I mean, I am in the camp of
- 14:27Haley. Please, please.
- 14:30I know he's going through it. But like, nobody deserves to be
- 14:33treated the way that Haley is treated by Justin.
- 14:36At least from what we can see. We don't know what's going on
- 14:38behind closed doors from what we can see publicly.
- 14:40If he's treating her like that publicly, I fear how he is
- 14:43treating her behind closed doors.
- 14:45Anyways guys, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
- 14:47Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
