Transcript
- 0:00I can't really believe that Alda was shot Do.
- 0:02You think that getting the Oscar has made any difference at all?
- 0:06No, not on the ground. The international community is
- 0:08so late, even France now announcing that it will
- 0:11recognize the state of Palestine, UK.
- 0:13But on the ground the annexation is happening do.
- 0:15You think there's a possibility that Trump might actually,
- 0:18against many expectations, bring about peace in the Middle East?
- 0:21This war can stop tomorrow now if Trump decide really to stop
- 0:25it. Because this jets that bombing
- 0:28Gaza is made at the US, this bomb bombs are made in the US.
- 0:31So if they want to end it, they can do it very easily.
- 0:34But I don't believe that is America want to stop this
- 0:38genocide. Hello and welcome to the
- 0:42forecast. The world's eyes are on Gaza as
- 0:45the NK faces mass starvation. But the war there is also
- 0:49emboldening. Israeli settlers in the occupied
- 0:51West Bank, or De Hathalin, A Palestinian teacher and
- 0:54activist, campaigned against illegal Israeli settlements and
- 0:59settler violence. He also helped to make this
- 1:01year's Oscar winning film No Other Land, which documents
- 1:05Israeli attacks on the Palestinian community of Masafa
- 1:08Riata. It was there that he was shot
- 1:10dead, reportedly after a confrontation between villagers
- 1:13and settlers who were using a bulldozer to destroy property.
- 1:17An extremist settler previously sanctioned by the US has been
- 1:21arrested Around 1000 Palestinians have reportedly
- 1:25been killed in the West Bank in the last two years and made an
- 1:28increasing wave of settler and Israeli military violence.
- 1:33Well, joining me now is the Palestinian film maker Basil
- 1:35Adra. He Co wrote and Co directed No
- 1:38Other Land and was a friend of Ode.
- 1:41Thanks for coming on the programme.
- 1:43Let's start first of all with Ode himself.
- 1:46What was he like your friend? Roda was a very, very close
- 1:51friend to us. He was an activist, he was a
- 1:53father and English teacher teaching the students of the
- 1:57community. He was the one that really for
- 2:01for years supporting in nonviolent protests against the
- 2:06occupation, against the settlers, against the military,
- 2:09demolishing his community and the other communities in
- 2:12Mesafriata. He helped welcoming solidarity
- 2:16activists from UK, from the US, from all over the world who come
- 2:20in solidarity to stay in his village and in other villages in
- 2:24Mesafriata. He was the person that gathered
- 2:25us as a Palestinian activist in the hall moments to give us very
- 2:31small parties like BBQ like Together for a Cafe and to laugh
- 2:35when we had harsh time. Our loss is really, really big.
- 2:39Our hearts are break. We are not believing that he's
- 2:43gone in this settler bullet. Your hearts must be broken.
- 2:48Yeah, we, we're really like, we're really not believing that
- 2:51like his body's still captured by the by the Israelis today.
- 2:56They, the army invaded the mourn tent that his family and us
- 3:02established in his in his in at his home.
- 3:05They forced us all to leave solidarity activists,
- 3:10journalists and the Palestinians who gathered there.
- 3:12They used stun grenades to chase everybody away and to only allow
- 3:16the the that bulldozer that was yesterday there to come and to
- 3:20continue the the work at Elders Family Land.
- 3:24And so the reason they gave for, you know, for, for ending the
- 3:27the morning tent and the meeting was that it was illegal or an
- 3:31illegal gathering. What?
- 3:32What was the reason they gave you?
- 3:35You know, everything here where I live is done by military, by
- 3:39military orders, like the law is, is is set up by Israeli
- 3:43occupation military. So the commander can decide to
- 3:46take my home now and to say it's for for security purpose.
- 3:50And that would be legal in their in their hands because we live
- 3:53under military control. This is what means it's
- 3:56apartheid. Like I can't appeal even to a
- 3:58court for that. I can't protest, I can't reject.
- 4:01And this is what happened there. They said it's closed military
- 4:04area, journalist can't be there. Solidarity activist me can't be
- 4:08there because I'm from different village, but the settlers can be
- 4:12there. So this is this is, this is the
- 4:14law here. And the settlers are governed by
- 4:17civilian law, including the man who allegedly shot your friend,
- 4:22And you are governed by military law because of the occupation.
- 4:26Yeah, So that's the settler that shot shot out yesterday.
- 4:31He was released today in a in a in Israeli civil court, in
- 4:35apartheid court. But 5 from 5 people from Alder's
- 4:39family are still in jail. They were arrested yesterday,
- 4:43abducted by the military. They're still in in jail and
- 4:46they were like postponed their detention in a military court.
- 4:53So here here. Why are they being held under?
- 4:55Under what charges are they being held?
- 4:58They, they claim that they, they, the claims are that they
- 5:01attacked the, the, the attacked the settler and they like throw
- 5:06stones. And so for that they are held in
- 5:10in in a military jail and brought in front of a military
- 5:13court. But the settler who shot Alda to
- 5:16to death is brought in in front of civil court and they decide
- 5:21to release him. Right.
- 5:24And apparently he's under house arrest now.
- 5:26We're never going to gain any justice in in front of Israeli
- 5:30courts because all settlers, their courts, army, police are
- 5:36all has one goal, which is to displace us from our land,
- 5:40whether to destroy our homes or schools infrastructure that it's
- 5:45a policy by the Israeli army or the settlers violence which is
- 5:51torturing our homes, burning our crops, building illegal outposts
- 5:54and settlements and the crimes like killing our friend Alda.
- 5:58It all has one goal, which is to ethnic cleansing us from our our
- 6:01homeland and to an exit. And they don't hide it.
- 6:04Israeli cabinet member are saying it out loud and that this
- 6:08is this is what they are doing here.
- 6:11And it's, it's, it's an Israeli broadcasts like this discussion.
- 6:17And do the Palestinians who are targeted by the settlers, and of
- 6:21course the numbers of those targeted have gone up
- 6:24exponentially since October the 7th, do they ever get justice?
- 6:31As I said, we never gain justice from Israeli, from Israeli
- 6:37courts. This this settlers are are
- 6:40committing these crimes. These crimes are a state policy.
- 6:43It's not isolated crimes happening here and there.
- 6:46You see here on the ground very clear how settlers are deciding
- 6:50for the police and the army to to what to do on the ground.
- 6:53This is happening all the time. You know that the settlers tell
- 6:57the soldiers what to do exactly to arrest who and to close what
- 7:00and what to do on the ground. This is for us if you're we're
- 7:03on the ground and this is we see it in very clear.
- 7:07And the IDF would obviously deny that.
- 7:09They would say that they are in charge, but you're saying that
- 7:12it's the settlers who are in charge.
- 7:17It's, it's, it's not, it's not true.
- 7:19I mean, it's that there's really occupation like by its military,
- 7:24by its police, as I said, by its court has, has the power, but
- 7:27the actual power on the ground, it's in the, you can see it's in
- 7:30the hand of Smothrich and Bengveer and others whose
- 7:33settlers now, now they're elected and they're like
- 7:36representing the state of Israel.
- 7:38They are in the parliament and they're deciding the laws.
- 7:41So they are settlers. They're just like they, they
- 7:43were also facing some charges in the past committing violence
- 7:48again against Palestinians. And now they became the one
- 7:51that's making this decision. So this is how you can see that
- 7:54the whole policy is is is is like is done by this like by
- 7:59this settlers. And what do you think the idea
- 8:01is here? Is the idea to render any kind
- 8:04of Palestinian state unviable impossible?
- 8:09Definitely, yeah, they're saying it actually where I live in is
- 8:13Area C, which is a 60% of the West Bank.
- 8:17And and this is where there's really like settlers, soldiers,
- 8:21violence mainly like and mostly committed, which is to destroy
- 8:25Palestinian villages and to expand more to expand more
- 8:29settlements and to to create more illegal outpost farms for
- 8:32the settlers. With the expansion of the
- 8:34settlements in general happening, which is, yeah, to
- 8:37prevent future Palestinian independent state.
- 8:41And unfortunately, the international community is so
- 8:43late even in France now announcing that it will
- 8:45recognize the state of Palestine.
- 8:47UK thinking about it. But on the ground the annexation
- 8:50is happening because settlers and as I say that the state of
- 8:53Israel is annexing more and more of our land by expanding their
- 8:57settlements and outposts and like settlers projects in
- 9:01general and meantime destroying more and more Palestinian
- 9:04villages or Palestinians are fleeing from their land due to a
- 9:08settlers like bogroms and attacks.
- 9:12So even if Britain, let's say, were to recognize the
- 9:15Palestinian state and other European countries, you know, do
- 9:20the same thing. I know the Norwegians have done
- 9:22it, the Irish have done it, the Spaniards have done it.
- 9:25But if you get a Palestinian state recognised, do you think
- 9:28that might make any difference or at all to your future and
- 9:32your family's future? Yeah, yes, it's important, but
- 9:36it can't. But not alone it should, it
- 9:39should pay consequences for it's crimes for continue continuing
- 9:42the occupation. Now there is AICG ruling that
- 9:45the whole Israeli occupation is illegal.
- 9:48The existence of Israeli military settlements here in the
- 9:52West Bank is illegal. And now it's the turn to the
- 9:54international community to put serious pressure and actions on
- 9:58the Israeli government to end this and to stop that.
- 10:01Israel can't commit those crimes against us and having normal
- 10:06relationship with the UK. UK markets can't be so far
- 10:11opened for the settlers like products.
- 10:15It's Auk airports should not be open for the settle that shot my
- 10:19friend yesterday and that the whole 700,000 settle that
- 10:23illegally and criminally living here in the West Bank.
- 10:27Yes, recognize the state of Palestine, but meanwhile we need
- 10:30serious actions against the state of Israel to put an end
- 10:34for it occupation and apartheid and leave us alone.
- 10:38I mean, the two cabinet ministers in the Israeli cabinet
- 10:41who are settlers, you know, from the far right, they have been
- 10:44sanctioned by the UK government already, although obviously we
- 10:47don't know what difference that will make.
- 10:48I just wonder whether you think that actually the key, as ever,
- 10:52lies with Donald Trump. And Donald Trump is quite
- 10:55confusing because on one hand, he's very supportive of the
- 10:58Israeli government. On the other hand, he's been
- 10:59saying recently that, you know, that every, every morsel of food
- 11:03age should get into Gaza. And he's condemned some of the
- 11:06violence. So where do you see Trump's role
- 11:08in all this? I don't think there is any time
- 11:12more for like condemnations would not help anything.
- 11:15There should be actions that Trump and the US administration
- 11:19carry a lot of the crimes of the Israeli settlers or governments
- 11:22that's happening in Gaza or the West Bank, for example.
- 11:25The settler that shot my friend out there yesterday were sanched
- 11:28by UK and by the US, especially by like Biden administration and
- 11:33the Trump removed the sanctions on, on, on this sector and all
- 11:37settlers that that were that were sanched.
- 11:39And this is a sign from Trump and his position to support this
- 11:44settlers and this settlements project in the West Bank.
- 11:48So the the US should stop playing this policy of
- 11:52supporting settlers and settlements.
- 11:53We see their ambassador to, to Israel how he's supporting
- 11:57settlers and settlements. And this is this is a state
- 12:01policy by by the US to support this criminal settlers.
- 12:06But I mean, is, you know, American public opinion is
- 12:09turning against Israel's war on Gaza.
- 12:13European public opinion has turned against Israel's war on
- 12:16Gaza. We know that Donald Trump is
- 12:18desperate to get the Nobel Peace Prize, and he may love that idea
- 12:24more than he likes or respects Prime Minister Netanyahu.
- 12:27So despite everything you've said, do you think there's a
- 12:30possibility that Trump might actually, against many
- 12:34expectations, bring about peace in the Middle East?
- 12:38Listen, this war can stop tomorrow now if Trump decide
- 12:42really to stop it, because this is this jets that bombing Gaza,
- 12:47it's made at the US, this bombs are made in the US.
- 12:50The, the, the, the Americans are taxpayers are paying for this
- 12:55war. US foreign policy is supporting
- 12:58this war and we saw it many times using the veto against
- 13:02against the against the ceasefire.
- 13:05So I don't believe any any other things that they can't stop it.
- 13:09They can't stop it if they if they want.
- 13:11For me, I believe that this is AUS war as it is Israel
- 13:15genocide. So if they want to to to to end
- 13:19it, they can do it very easily. But I don't believe that is
- 13:22America want to stop this genocide.
- 13:26The film that you made with Yuval Abraham, who is of course
- 13:29Israeli, was very powerful. No other land.
- 13:33It won the Oscar this year. You gave a very powerful speech,
- 13:35as did Yuval, you know, talking about some of the things that
- 13:38we've just talked about. Do you think that getting the
- 13:41Oscar has made any difference at all?
- 13:46No, not on the ground as as as you said, this brought more
- 13:50public opinion and this made more people to understand.
- 13:54This made the circle of people who doesn't know about what's
- 13:58happening here wider. People can learn more about what
- 14:01it look like to live under the occupation under apartheid
- 14:04system. So it's it's succeeded like in
- 14:08the in the Oscar and, and in the festivals in general.
- 14:11But on the ground, as you, as you can see, situation is
- 14:13escalating and things going very fast to worse and worse.
- 14:18And as I said, only like decision makers around the
- 14:21world, like in UK and the US, all Israel allies should take
- 14:26serious actions to stop this. There's a daily killing of
- 14:30Palestinians in Gaza and there is daily crimes committed either
- 14:34by Israeli settlers or soldiers in the West Bank and this is
- 14:37really need to stop. Your friend Aldo, who was
- 14:42killed, was of course had a very prominent role to play in the
- 14:46documentary that you made. Are you afraid that you yourself
- 14:49have now got a target on your head as a result of what you've
- 14:53been doing? Living, living here as a
- 14:58Palestinian and this situation, I think all of us has, has this
- 15:01fear because we're living in, as I said, in everyday there is,
- 15:07there is something going on either by soldiers or by, by
- 15:10settlers. Our homes got annual invades by
- 15:14Israeli soldiers. Our communities got like also
- 15:17invades and attacks by Israeli settlers and soldiers together.
- 15:21So there is a there is a fear all the time on our life and
- 15:25then our families and then our our friends.
- 15:28Like until today, I couldn't until now.
- 15:31I can't really believe that Aldo was shot and murdered in in the
- 15:34cold blood. Like he was just like, like I
- 15:39really can't believe this. And the way that the soul like I
- 15:44went there and the soldiers were like exposing their, their hate
- 15:48and the racism and they were saying to us, we don't see you
- 15:51as a human beings. 2 soldiers there said to my friend that
- 15:54they when he when he told them that the settler shot a man in
- 15:59this village, they they said like, I wish it was me like the
- 16:02soldiers. I mean, this is the situation
- 16:04where we're living at and this is has have to stop.
- 16:11The occupation has been going on for decades.
- 16:13The kind of things that you've been describing have been going
- 16:16on for decades. Do you think that October the
- 16:207th and Hamas have set back the Palestinian cause significantly
- 16:27by their actions? Well, unfortunately I blame the
- 16:33international community more to be honest, because Palestinian
- 16:37Authority, like PLO, has laid down their arms and the 90s has
- 16:41signed an agreement by a pressure of Europe and the US
- 16:44together and were promised to get a state and were promised
- 16:47that the occupation will come to an end.
- 16:50But none of that happened. Palestinian civil society is
- 16:53designated as a terrorist. Organizations asked if we are
- 16:57banned for protests like nonviolent protests for sure to
- 17:02build our homes. We got attacked, we got killed
- 17:05international community long time ago should put pressure on
- 17:08Israel and should should should have been end this suffering and
- 17:13should have been end the expansion and the building of
- 17:16illegal settlements on the in the in the West Bank to reach a
- 17:19day like October 7th or that the day that we're living today.
- 17:24But before October the 7th, you know, there were quite a few
- 17:27Israeli citizens who were on the side of Palestinians who wanted
- 17:31A2 state solution. And that number has decreased as
- 17:35far as I'm concerned. You know, that's my impression
- 17:38anyway. That number of Israelis who want
- 17:40to have, you know, live side by side with Palestinians has
- 17:43decreased dramatically since October the 7th.
- 17:48Until today, there are Israeli amazing activist friends who who
- 17:52comes here to, to support, to, to support us and to stand
- 17:56against the, the apartheid, against the occupation, to
- 17:59oppose this, this policies. But I don't I really don't that
- 18:03much agree with you because Israel, the Israeli majority
- 18:06voted, as I said, for the far right wing radical government to
- 18:12represent them. Smote rich being we're Swiss to
- 18:15go. These are settlers known as a
- 18:16violent settlers and they were elected two years, I think
- 18:21before October 7th. So the Israeli, Israeli public
- 18:25mostly do not see us living here like the people in in Tel Aviv
- 18:29or other cities mostly do not see us here as a Palestinians do
- 18:33not recognize the suffering that we suffer from, from their
- 18:38policies, from their government, from their army, from the
- 18:40settlers that that living here. So I, I don't think I don't
- 18:47think that is like will ever we will have a solution just
- 18:51because Israelis will change their minds.
- 18:53It's there's no time to wait even for that.
- 18:56I as I said as I and back to say that if there is a hope to end
- 19:00this, it's international community to really boot serious
- 19:05actions out there to stop this. Just one final brief question.
- 19:10When you gave your Oscar speech, you said that you hope that your
- 19:13your daughter was then only two months old, would not suffer the
- 19:17same kind of consequences, the same life that you're living
- 19:20through right now. Do you really think that she
- 19:22will have a different life to yours?
- 19:24Briefly. I hope, I hope, I hope, I really
- 19:27hope. I pray for that.
- 19:28I pray for elders kids also the three, three amazing kids that
- 19:32they will grow up in in a better life and they will have good
- 19:35future not to suffer as the father were were born and killed
- 19:40lived all his life and their suffering over the occupation of
- 19:43settlers attacks. And I really hope for these kids
- 19:47to grow up in a in a different conditions and to have a better
- 19:50future. And this suffering, this killing
- 19:54of, of Palestinians, of will will end.
- 19:57OK, Basil Aldra, thank you very much indeed for joining us on
- 20:01the forecast. Until next time, goodbye.
