- 0:00You're watching and listening to Five Things Friday Hey Pack
- 0:03Edition. Brittany, thank you for the
- 0:17introduction. We're going to jump straight in
- 0:1915 minutes. Top five things, I'm moving the
- 0:22needle in Asia. Why don't we start with Yuri for
- 0:26the first? One, right, I reckon I've got a
- 0:28couple of biggies this week and it's more because I've been
- 0:31getting out and about and hearing cool things.
- 0:33So the first one I want to talk about like I spoke at a
- 0:36conference last week called Shop, which is run by a group
- 0:39called power retail in Australia and they had the CEO of a of a
- 0:44company called baby Bunting speak and baby Bunting is
- 0:48Australia's largest, you know, baby stuff, everything from
- 0:52bottles to nappies to pushes to prams to, you know, from zero to
- 0:57probably toddler 33 is all right.
- 0:59So I might just share a little bit on that one because I've but
- 1:01they have launched their store of the future and I know in
- 1:04recent weeks I'm going to see if I can make this a bit bigger.
- 1:06Actually, how's that? They've looking good.
- 1:08They we've been we've been talking about baby bunting a
- 1:11little bit of that story of the future concepts for a while now.
- 1:14And and what was really cool about Mark the CEO's
- 1:17presentation is he really started to talk about really
- 1:20started to talk about look at that.
- 1:22It's just beautiful, isn't? It wow, this is this is
- 1:25exceptional, Yeah. Yeah, it's amazing.
- 1:27It's amazing. So he's on the go.
- 1:29You know, some really beautiful stuff in here.
- 1:31So like it is wild. So there's one really that is a
- 1:34real, this is a really my favourite.
- 1:35This is my favourite image. So this image is like a kitchen
- 1:38scene, right? So you've got all of your
- 1:40feeding, cooking bottle sterilising apparatus.
- 1:43So this is a big change here. There's this, the assortment
- 1:46went from, you know, all nappies and all bottles to like now into
- 1:50situational moments. That makes sense.
- 1:51So it's really done. So this is a mock kitchen if you
- 1:54will. It's very.
- 1:55It's not. Yeah, yeah, it's, it's
- 1:57beautiful. It's beautiful.
- 1:59And so Baby Bunting has been dormant.
- 2:01People love them, but their, their, their, their shops look
- 2:04like something supermarkets from the 70s I would suggest.
- 2:06And so they've really stepped up their game in terms of the way
- 2:09they're presented and Baby Bunting were in trouble much.
- 2:12So they Mark said, the CEO said we were in touching distance of
- 2:16our banking covenants. It wasn't going well.
- 2:18EBIT was falling through the floor and they showed some
- 2:21figures. And so they've they listened,
- 2:23they had the consumer inside. They listened to the consumer
- 2:25that we love you but and you have everything.
- 2:28But it's just, it's, it's just really hard.
- 2:30You know, it wasn't a great experience.
- 2:32So they basically set set strategy on a page and they've
- 2:35end up executing a beautiful infinite.
- 2:37I'd really encourage it is from is actually a design award site
- 2:40and go and have a look at if you're not not an Australian
- 2:43can't see their stores go and have a look at this because it
- 2:45is just absolutely stunning. But we you know, when we look
- 2:48talk about store of the future concept, we sort of look at it
- 2:51with a slight bit of scepticism because it costs a lot of money
- 2:55to go from what it was to what it is today.
- 2:57And So what I've got today is a little bit about payback.
- 3:00So these store fit outs, you know, we're talking about
- 3:03improved layout, interactive design, product designed, more
- 3:06experiential retail, better merchandise and navigation and
- 3:10focus on exclusive and private brands.
- 3:12My products unique to baby Bunting to protect margin.
- 3:15What they've seen straight away is sales uplifts of 25 to 28%.
- 3:21That's incredible. That's too incredible, yes.
- 3:24I mean, it sells uplift. That's amazing, yes.
- 3:27On their stores, so high gross margin improvement of 40 basis
- 3:31points. I will expect that, yeah.
- 3:33Again, higher transaction volumes of plus 24% basket size
- 3:36of increased by 6%, right. So people are people are
- 3:40shopping mall and increasing the purchase of the order, right.
- 3:43And the payback currently because they they thought they
- 3:46might have a little bit of a Nike, a bit of a Halo type
- 3:49effect where it would go up and then come down again.
- 3:52It's been sustained. These stores costing about 1.7
- 3:57million Australian to refurb 1 store.
- 4:00Yeah, and they're paying back within three years.
- 4:02That's the thing. Shot me bacteria.
- 4:04Amazing. Yeah, so it's, it's an amazing
- 4:07story. And I I just when I I saw this
- 4:10and I saw them actually as part of the Power Retail Award show
- 4:13last Thursday night. And this is, you know, Australia
- 4:17is a mature market and very much a fast follower market.
- 4:19But this is something exceptional that's happened in
- 4:21Australia. And I was like, and I watched
- 4:23Mark speak and he talked us on a journey of how they engage staff
- 4:27and how they set their strategy on a page and how they looked at
- 4:30the revenue, the revenue returns from this stuff, even from store
- 4:34to store to store to store. It's but it's an incredible
- 4:36story. So I really encourage you if you
- 4:37go and have a go, go. You're looking for baby bunting.
- 4:40It was something. And if you live in Australia, go
- 4:42to a store. It's just.
- 4:45Absolutely, Yeah. So, yeah.
- 4:47So if you put back the same picture just now, I just want to
- 4:50point out something which it ties exactly to what I'm going
- 4:54to say next, right? And you look at the spaces here
- 4:56and you kind of expect your front liners, you know, the
- 5:00people who are introducing your items or talking about
- 5:02promotional items or talking through how this lifestyle is
- 5:07because you're going to kind of have to introduce it.
- 5:08If it's if it's designed this way, it's not just for customers
- 5:12to experience. It is also for the store to sort
- 5:15of have demo sessions, the stores who have ambassadors to
- 5:18talk through it. So this is one of the most
- 5:21profound shift my story in retail today that's happening
- 5:25under our very eyes and nose. And perhaps we may not realise
- 5:29it immediately. This is the frontline human
- 5:32resource design that's changing. So we as retailers we use to ask
- 5:35this very strange question that continuously is strange for me
- 5:40is about how do we reduce labour cost?
- 5:42You know, labour cost is one of the most important thing in
- 5:44retail and we're still asking that, right?
- 5:46But now for me, the better question to ask really is how do
- 5:50we design better human structure that will amplify the customer
- 5:55experience. So the idea really is we want to
- 5:58optimise human impact per employee.
- 6:00So one employee actually should be turning around and converting
- 6:04more customers into real, into bigger baskets, into frequency,
- 6:10into better loyalty. That's what a front liner should
- 6:13be doing. But we're not able to measure
- 6:15that before because the job scope that we give them has
- 6:17nothing to do with that. So now we look at examples.
- 6:20So for example, if we look at Heidi Lau, Heidi Lau is
- 6:23incredibly successful. They have in Singapore, them in
- 6:26China, they're in Malaysia. It's like a Steamboat kind of
- 6:29restaurant that got everyone talking because you know
- 6:33Steamboat, it takes a long time. You go into a table, you spend
- 6:36an easy 2 to 4 hours before you come out.
- 6:39So, you know, the turn around time for people to keep coming
- 6:42in and wait is long. The wait time is very long.
- 6:45So what do they do with it is that they then have people, your
- 6:47own staff literally walking around doing amazing stuff like,
- 6:51oh, let me colour your nails. Oh, I can tie your hair for you.
- 6:54Oh, what about snacks? How about you?
- 6:56How do you snack around? What about massage?
- 6:58I give you a quick massage, you know, so the wait time becomes
- 7:01bearable. And then they talked about and
- 7:04sometimes they even put on little, little shows and they
- 7:06become really famous on TikTok. Yeah, and their toe in and all
- 7:09that stuff and their employees are highly sought after post
- 7:14their job, post their steam at Heidi Law.
- 7:16And then if you look at another crazy way of doing this, which
- 7:20belongs to Lucking Coffee. So Lucking Coffee has like quite
- 7:22amazing number of outlets across China.
- 7:25And what they have been doing is that they if you want to order
- 7:28coffee, there is no human person for you to order from.
- 7:31You got to order it from the app.
- 7:33So the whole front liner team is only turning to people who make
- 7:36coffee and people who serve. There is no people who take take
- 7:39your order because you should be able to do that yourself and you
- 7:42know what you want best. And you don't need a person
- 7:45doing that. Whereas the person serving you
- 7:47will be doing all the extras for you as they serve you.
- 7:51So you see, like Heidelow is doing, he's using experienced
- 7:55creators. They're hiring experienced
- 7:57creators. And you see, like in talking
- 7:59about technology efficient way to, to, to, to quicken
- 8:03frontliners to work on. And then we look at Zara and
- 8:06Trader Joe's and they are they are now hiring for personality.
- 8:11So staff are encouraged to recommend products, they open
- 8:14samples, they talk to customers like they're food bloggers, you
- 8:17know, so this kind of stuff, which is insight generators,
- 8:21they're using the cut the, the, the style first.
- 8:24Hey, I give you insight, I recommend things.
- 8:26I'm actually your your key opinion consumer too.
- 8:30So this actually changing the way we are looking at
- 8:34frontliners and the way we are hiring.
- 8:36So I think that's amazing that that's something we need to look
- 8:40at. Yeah, OK.
- 8:41I love it. Interesting brief coming back to
- 8:43you. That's a little while ago.
- 8:46Recently we've been at travelling so much.
- 8:48I don't know where I've been the masters a while I've been in
- 8:50India and I got invited to speak with the retailers associated
- 8:53with his Retail Association of India's Leaders Forum.
- 8:57And I got to meet the who's who of retail from Reliance to Tata,
- 9:01all of these, you know, the Flipkart, all these amazing
- 9:04brands. And what was really cool about
- 9:06the experiences I started, I got out and about and threw it
- 9:09around Mumbai. And I started to get a feeling
- 9:11of why India is surging so quickly.
- 9:14So I was in China in 2002. And when I was there, it was
- 9:18incredibly poor. And, and China in the last sort
- 9:21of 20 years or so has gone through this amazing evolution.
- 9:24And, and so it, China contributes 27% of the world's
- 9:29growth in terms of GDP. It's, it's, it's enormous in
- 9:33terms of India, it's China has slowed down because it's
- 9:35matured. Yeah.
- 9:36Whereas India is basically, I reckon 5 is into that, onto
- 9:40their wave. It is just exciting and
- 9:43accelerating. So India's growth is operating
- 9:45about 6.5% in GDP. So it's going absolutely
- 9:49bonkers. It's contributing about 10% of
- 9:51the world's growth. But what you're seeing in India
- 9:54now is what happened in China 15 years ago, I reckon.
- 9:57And so if you're in your, if you're starting your career, if
- 10:00you're 25 years old and starting your retail career in India, I
- 10:03don't think there's any place else in the world you would want
- 10:07to be, right. So, you know, and, and I keep, I
- 10:09keep having little trying to work out what are the big
- 10:12telltale signs about what's the exciting growth.
- 10:15And the only thing I can get to you right now is this lack of
- 10:18margin pressure in their businesses that we all feel in
- 10:21the rest of Asia Pacific. Yeah.
- 10:23And we and, and the thing that came down to me was now I looked
- 10:26at the thing we're all selling spare inventory in our
- 10:30warehouses, last mile delivery, but going hard at retail media.
- 10:34And I was, I looked at India and I went, you know what, we're
- 10:36China's $40 billion US in retail media.
- 10:39India is 3. It's not obviously half of that
- 10:43is, well, 60%. Half of that is Amazon and
- 10:46Flipkart. And then the rest of it's driven
- 10:49by the sort of quick commerce guys.
- 10:51But what I'm saying is that this, we're not seeing any in
- 10:55India. We're not seeing the margin
- 10:56pressure like we're seeing in other parts of the region
- 10:58because growth is just explosive.
- 11:00And it was only that I went to see it and understand how people
- 11:04were living and how they were shopping.
- 11:06And I went, you know what we are just watching in the next wave
- 11:09and China's coming off and India's coming on and it's
- 11:12coming on fast. It's it's bloody mind blowing.
- 11:15I was like, I was like, this has been the best week of retail
- 11:17immersion I've had for. And I've got to say thank you to
- 11:19Kumar, who's the CEO of the Retail Association of India.
- 11:22Because I realised now, you know, this is a market that
- 11:25we've all got to take notice of. Perfect.
- 11:27Got you back to you, you. Yeah, it's Ramadan Kareem now
- 11:30where all the Muslims are fasting and very soon ideal
- 11:34Fetri is going to be I think about end of this week now
- 11:37festivals or season like the celebrations used to be driving
- 11:41retail. But I want to say that today
- 11:43food, hospitality are the one that is driving festivals and
- 11:46then driving celebrations. And then retailers who
- 11:49understand this will then definitely own the biggest share
- 11:53of how all this festive spending is going to be.
- 11:55So now if you think about it in in the Middle East is a lot more
- 11:59hospitality driven, so a lot more eating, a lot more
- 12:02gathering together with family. And so what's change is that
- 12:06fashion launches are paired with festive dining experience.
- 12:09So the picture that I sent over earlier is actually, she's a
- 12:12very famous Isaki Souza is a very famous comic illustrator.
- 12:17And as an illustrator, we've gotten her to work together with
- 12:21us on clothes, but also her work then yeah, OK.
- 12:25And then yes, yes, that's her. She's very young.
- 12:27She comes up very trendy. And immediately most of her
- 12:30stuff are like, snapped up immediately.
- 12:31She likes to draw big, very, very gigantic big lips on all
- 12:36her comics and all her illustration.
- 12:38And this then is imprinted onto like plates and the things I use
- 12:43for dining wares, premium food day.
- 12:46So it's not just one thing now, it's the whole conceptual, the
- 12:50whole lifestyle, the whole festival, the whole celebration
- 12:53of it becoming a larger economy on its own.
- 12:57And coming years it is going to be sharing the same period as
- 13:01Luna New Year. So you have Luna New Year and it
- 13:04collapsing and falling at the same time.
- 13:06So imagining that now is going to help tailors figure out what
- 13:11to do in the future. So you start for the what, on
- 13:13the 18th of March, doesn't it this year?
- 13:15So, so is that. So we'll see this really start
- 13:18to explode then at the end of Ramadan.
- 13:20Yeah. So you will, yes, correct.
- 13:21You will actually see more and more of this happening, the
- 13:24cross Lunar New Year as well as it happening more and more in
- 13:27the coming years. By the third year from today or
- 13:30the second year from today, you will see it collapsing as one.
- 13:33OK, wow. OK, that's a big call.
- 13:34Wow. Awesome.
- 13:35It's exciting, right? Final one from me.
- 13:38Shame buggy but. Also shameless.
- 13:41Shameless. Yeah.
- 13:42So obviously we run the retail news start and you can get your
- 13:46NRF AIPAC tickets there, by the way.
- 13:49That's good. But we run some research.
- 13:53We have come up with an AI glossary.
- 13:55The bits are we came up with 94 retails.
- 13:59We. Love it.
- 14:01Right. Or to do thing we want to get to
- 14:03100 because obviously from a marketing perspective.
- 14:06I have good. Looks states domain is.
- 14:08Prospects, but we could only find 94 so that if you have yes,
- 14:13sorry if it's not there, send me a little message and we'll we'll
- 14:18pop it in here. But you can see anything from.
- 14:21It's it's a. It's a comprehensive AI.
- 14:23Look what's happening within retail and so.
- 14:26Amazing, love it. It's got to be my Bible and
- 14:30bring. It back.
- 14:32Hopefully you guys will be available next week.
- 14:34Oh, absolutely. So I.
- 14:36Was 10 cups. I can't go to the Middle East at
- 14:38the moment, so I'm always here. Alex, don't worry about that.
- 14:40Hey. Look forward to seeing you next
- 14:42week guys. Oh yeah, thanks mate, lovely.
- 14:44See you and take care.
