Transcript
- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome back to Richard Sherman podcast. And we got the
- 0:07Speaker 1: first round of the draft complete. It's time to tell
- 0:11Speaker 1: you our thoughts about it. Mitchell. There was some surprises
- 0:14Speaker 1: in some expected picks, But what was your favorite?
- 0:18Speaker 2: Richard?
- 0:18Speaker 3: It was an exciting draft to watch. Pittsburgh was rocking.
- 0:22Speaker 3: I think they set in attendance record. I've gone on
- 0:24Speaker 3: note the previously. This is my favorite night of the year,
- 0:28Speaker 3: the off season, you know, in full swing the NFL draft,
- 0:31Speaker 3: people's dreams being made. My favorite team, and I like
- 0:36Speaker 3: what the New York Giants did Richard, with you know,
- 0:39Speaker 3: a lot of draft capital. Two picks in the top ten.
- 0:41Speaker 3: I think they got a lot better today. There's some
- 0:44Speaker 3: other teams that got better as well. But you know, Richard,
- 0:46Speaker 3: before we dig deeper into this, we saw a new
- 0:49Speaker 3: revised model with the draft. They moved it to eight minutes,
- 0:52Speaker 3: and I got the bet a lot earlier than I
- 0:54Speaker 3: normally have in these first rounds. Like, do you think
- 0:56Speaker 3: that's the way of the future for them? Do you
- 0:58Speaker 3: think they've done things right the NFL with how they've
- 1:01Speaker 3: structured this draft.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they've done it right. I don't like,
- 1:06Speaker 1: I mean, you've You've spent months and years researching and
- 1:11Speaker 1: doing all your homework on these kids.
- 1:13Speaker 2: Be ready to do your pick, Be ready to put
- 1:15Speaker 2: your pick in. So I like it.
- 1:17Speaker 1: I know that teams want to trade, and you know
- 1:20Speaker 1: things happen that trade people's draft boards.
- 1:22Speaker 2: But I like it.
- 1:23Speaker 1: The NFL is saying, hey, make your decision and let's
- 1:26Speaker 1: move on. You don't have time to sit here and
- 1:29Speaker 1: figure things out.
- 1:30Speaker 2: You got to be prepared.
- 1:32Speaker 1: And the most prepared teams are drafting well, they're drafting
- 1:34Speaker 1: quickly and getting the guy that they want.
- 1:37Speaker 3: Richard, we saw some surprises on draft like and I
- 1:40Speaker 3: think the one that stands out most of both of
- 1:42Speaker 3: us and frankly the whole world is Tye Simpson going
- 1:45Speaker 3: thirteen to the LA Rams, who you know, our Super
- 1:48Speaker 3: Bowl contenders. They got Matthew Stafford, one of the best
- 1:51Speaker 3: quarterbacks in the league, the reigning MVP. How do you
- 1:55Speaker 3: justify this pick, Richard? And how shocked are you that
- 1:58Speaker 3: they went Ti Simpson out of Bama.
- 2:03Speaker 1: I'm shocked that Tyz Simpson was drafted in the first round,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and I'm even more shocked by the team because I
- 2:08Speaker 1: don't see how this helps them this year. I don't
- 2:10Speaker 1: really see how it helps them next year. Maybe it
- 2:12Speaker 1: helps them in the future, but I'm not even sure.
- 2:14Speaker 1: This is the first round quarterback to begin with. And
- 2:17Speaker 1: now does he have a chance to develop great under
- 2:20Speaker 1: Sean McVay and the way he coaches offense and coaches quarterbacks,
- 2:24Speaker 1: No question about that. But this is the unnecessary pick
- 2:29Speaker 1: for a team that's expected to compete for the Super
- 2:33Speaker 1: Bowl this year. You know, those kind of teams draft
- 2:36Speaker 1: guys that can help them. Now, they've done a great
- 2:38Speaker 1: job draft and defensive lineman to rush the quarterback. They
- 2:42Speaker 1: went out there and traded for Trent McDuffie, so they're
- 2:45Speaker 1: solidifying that defense. Could they have used on offensive lineman.
- 2:49Speaker 1: Could they have used a running back? Could they have
- 2:51Speaker 1: traded back and gotten more picks, Like, there's so many
- 2:54Speaker 1: different things they could have done. And then you see
- 2:57Speaker 1: the press conference with Sean McVay and he did not
- 3:02Speaker 1: seem happy. You're talking about a guy who may compete
- 3:05Speaker 1: with stepson, and he seemed like he didn't even think
- 3:08Speaker 1: that should be a possibility. So it's a surprising pick.
- 3:14Speaker 1: It's a head scratcher. And then you see the connection
- 3:16Speaker 1: between Les Snead and the kid's dad, and it's kind
- 3:23Speaker 1: of kind of screams nepotism, and you're like, so, why
- 3:27Speaker 1: did this kid get drafted? I mean, he's I think
- 3:30Speaker 1: the fourth quarterback with less than sixteen starts to be
- 3:33Speaker 1: drafted in the first round, and none of them are
- 3:36Speaker 1: doing really well in the National Football League. I just
- 3:38Speaker 1: don't think this was a great pick for the Rams.
- 3:40Speaker 1: I think they could have gone a lot of different
- 3:42Speaker 1: directions and got a guy that's gonna help him this year.
- 3:45Speaker 2: Is he the QB of the future?
- 3:47Speaker 1: I mean, I guess he has to be now you
- 3:49Speaker 1: use first round capital on him, But it doesn't seem
- 3:52Speaker 1: like anybody's happy with it. I'm sure Matthew Stafford's fine
- 3:56Speaker 1: with it. He just got another extension, just had an
- 4:00Speaker 1: MVP season. He's fine. But for the Rams, for the fans,
- 4:05Speaker 1: for the players, you just like, why.
- 4:07Speaker 3: When you're trying to keep up with the defending Super
- 4:10Speaker 3: Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, this one is a head scratcher
- 4:13Speaker 3: to me. There was plenty of talent on the board.
- 4:15Speaker 3: I mean we've talked about, you know, their need at
- 4:18Speaker 3: wide receiver, maybe not right now, but in the next
- 4:21Speaker 3: year or two. With the Vontae Adams getting up there
- 4:23Speaker 3: in age. You saw Makay Lemon slip. That would have
- 4:26Speaker 3: been a great pick for the Rams. There's a number
- 4:28Speaker 3: of other guys that slipped. Ruben Bain, you know, if
- 4:30Speaker 3: you want to reenforce that D line, you know, and
- 4:34Speaker 3: make them even more strong on that D line. This
- 4:36Speaker 3: one just seems like a luxury pick. And they talked
- 4:39Speaker 3: about it when they traded for McDuffie and they were
- 4:43Speaker 3: able to secure that position of need, they viewed this
- 4:47Speaker 3: as a luxury pick and they treated it as such.
- 4:50Speaker 3: And I just don't get it, rich I don't get it.
- 4:53Speaker 3: They're going to Jordan Love route.
- 4:55Speaker 2: You know.
- 4:55Speaker 3: They want to sit them behind Aaron Rodgers and let
- 4:58Speaker 3: them develop for two or three years. It's the same
- 5:00Speaker 3: thing they're doing with Tys Simpson behind Matthew Stafford. We'll
- 5:03Speaker 3: see if it pays out. But to me, if I'm
- 5:06Speaker 3: a fan of the La Rams, I'm definitely scratching my
- 5:09Speaker 3: head this morning and wondering what.
- 5:10Speaker 4: Could have been. Richard.
- 5:12Speaker 3: We saw some movement early in the draft. Jeremiah Love
- 5:16Speaker 3: goes three and then his teammate is running mate, Jadarium
- 5:19Speaker 3: Price goes to your Seattle Seahawks. Let's start with Jadarian
- 5:23Speaker 3: Price and Richard. I don't mean to tap my own
- 5:26Speaker 3: shoulders my own back here, but I put him on
- 5:28Speaker 3: my radar going into the draft. Is somebody who I
- 5:31Speaker 3: thought the Seattle Seahawks gun target.
- 5:33Speaker 4: A Round one.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Here we are they pick him at thirty two. Jadarium Price,
- 5:38Speaker 3: what do you think he's gonna bring to Seattle? And
- 5:39Speaker 3: what do you think of this pick?
- 5:43Speaker 2: I think it's a great pick.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Obviously they think this is gonna be the heir apparent
- 5:48Speaker 1: to your guy CA nine. This is their answer everybody
- 5:52Speaker 1: this whole offseason, like what are they gonna do now
- 5:54Speaker 1: that Canine's gone? This is an obvious answer from the
- 5:57Speaker 1: Seattle Seahawks. Obviously, Sharpna is still going to be in
- 6:01Speaker 1: the mix. They still have other guys that they feel
- 6:02Speaker 1: really good about. But this is their what I would
- 6:05Speaker 1: expect them to think, this their their future. Would be
- 6:09Speaker 1: a great move for them, a great pick, a great spot.
- 6:13Speaker 1: Only the fourth time in the history of the National
- 6:15Speaker 1: Football League that two running backs from the same school
- 6:18Speaker 1: have been drafted in the first round, So that's an
- 6:20Speaker 1: incredible accomplishment for Notre Dame. But I think it's a
- 6:23Speaker 1: great pick for the Seattle Seahawks. I think it solidifies
- 6:25Speaker 1: a strong position for the Seahawks. They're going to run
- 6:29Speaker 1: the ball, They're gonna they're gonna play great defense. They're
- 6:32Speaker 1: going to use the same formula that they used last
- 6:35Speaker 1: season to have success this season, and this only goes
- 6:39Speaker 1: to reinforce that.
- 6:39Speaker 3: I like it too, Richard. I mean, the reality is
- 6:42Speaker 3: they got Zach Charbonay coming off the ACL injury which
- 6:45Speaker 3: happened late in the season. I think the fans need
- 6:47Speaker 3: to be realistic with their expectations of him coming back
- 6:50Speaker 3: next year. And then they sign Emmanuel Wilson, who showed
- 6:56Speaker 3: you know, good flashes in Green Bay. I think he
- 6:58Speaker 3: could be a good player for them. The reality is
- 7:01Speaker 3: they needed to address this position. I think Jaderian Price
- 7:04Speaker 3: is a great player to fill that position. So for me,
- 7:07Speaker 3: I think the Seattle Seahawks achieved in this draft. And
- 7:11Speaker 3: then we turn our focus to the other running back
- 7:13Speaker 3: that I got drafted, and that is Jeremiah Love Here
- 7:16Speaker 3: Jadarian prices teammate going number three to division rival Arizona Cardinals. Richard,
- 7:23Speaker 3: it's early in the draft to be taken running backs,
- 7:25Speaker 3: but Arizona, you know, I think they got somebody they
- 7:28Speaker 3: can build their team around.
- 7:29Speaker 4: What do you think of this pick?
- 7:31Speaker 3: Would you have picked Jeremiah Love at three if you're
- 7:33Speaker 3: the Arizona Cardinals.
- 7:36Speaker 1: I'm never in the camp that's picking running backs in
- 7:38Speaker 1: the top five. I think you can get them later.
- 7:40Speaker 1: I think they had James Connor, they felt good about him.
- 7:44Speaker 1: They just picked up Tyler Aljiar they feel good about him.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Is Jeremiah Love way better than both of them? Potentially?
- 7:52Speaker 1: But is that making your team that much better? I
- 7:55Speaker 1: don't think so. I don't think a running back takes
- 7:58Speaker 1: you over the top win you have solid running backs. Now,
- 8:01Speaker 1: if you don't have a solid back, you don't have
- 8:03Speaker 1: anybody exposive, then maybe that makes a difference.
- 8:05Speaker 2: But you saw last year with the with the Raiders.
- 8:07Speaker 1: I mean, you need more than a running back to
- 8:09Speaker 1: get your team going, like you need offensive linemen, you
- 8:12Speaker 1: need a good defense. So just drafting a running back don't.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I don't. It wasn't a position of need. And I
- 8:20Speaker 1: know everybody's in the camp of best player available, best
- 8:22Speaker 1: player available, but I'm not in that camp. You draft
- 8:25Speaker 1: best player for the needs you have, and if the
- 8:28Speaker 1: needs you have are great, and you think, hey, we
- 8:30Speaker 1: can move back, get more players, get more draft picks,
- 8:34Speaker 1: then that's what you do. But I don't think you
- 8:36Speaker 1: ever pick a running back in the top five. It's
- 8:39Speaker 1: worked out a handful of times in the National Football League,
- 8:42Speaker 1: but it's not the way I would draft.
- 8:43Speaker 2: We'll see how it works out for the Cardinals.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's interesting because you know, the Detroit
- 8:48Speaker 3: Lions drafted Jamier.
- 8:49Speaker 4: Gibbs early a couple of years back.
- 8:51Speaker 3: Obviously, we see Jean Robinson go early, and then we
- 8:54Speaker 3: see this kind of new wave of running backs going
- 8:57Speaker 3: going early and earlier, and now to be in the
- 9:00Speaker 3: top three for Jeremiah Love, this better pan out for
- 9:03Speaker 3: the Arizona Cardinals because he's gonna be the highest paid
- 9:06Speaker 3: running back in the league next year. There's a lot
- 9:08Speaker 3: of weapons in Arizona. You couple him with Trey McBride. Obviously,
- 9:12Speaker 3: we saw an emergence from Michael Wilson this past season.
- 9:16Speaker 3: And if Marvin Harrison Junior can figure it out and
- 9:18Speaker 3: be the top five pick and live up to his
- 9:20Speaker 3: top five billing, you know this team might have something there.
- 9:24Speaker 3: Do you see the Arizona Cardinals as being a quiet
- 9:28Speaker 3: contender in the NFC West at all.
- 9:31Speaker 2: I do I do not. I do not.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I see them as being just quiet. They're gonna just
- 9:36Speaker 1: be quiet, Mitchell. They're gonna be quiet, and they're gonna
- 9:38Speaker 1: skate by and you'll likely be picking in the top
- 9:40Speaker 1: ten again next year because of picks like this. Now,
- 9:43Speaker 1: maybe this will help them later on in their future.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Maybe I'm totally wrong and I don't see the vision.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Maybe they're getting rid of James Connor, which would make sense.
- 9:54Speaker 1: I mean, he was a really good running back. He's
- 9:56Speaker 1: had some injuries, but I think you to solidify that defense.
- 10:01Speaker 1: I think there were there were holes in that defense
- 10:04Speaker 1: that you need to get fixed for the future of
- 10:07Speaker 1: this program, in the future of this franchise, and picking
- 10:10Speaker 1: Jeremiah Love at three just doesn't make sense. That's a
- 10:13Speaker 1: perfect that that could have been a gift that kept
- 10:16Speaker 1: on giving. That could have been the gift that got
- 10:18Speaker 1: you multiple first round picks and allows you to get
- 10:22Speaker 1: multiple players that can.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Help you in that defense.
- 10:24Speaker 1: But instead you get a running back that that may
- 10:27Speaker 1: or may not have a great season, may or may
- 10:30Speaker 1: not have an incredible impact. It depends on how great
- 10:32Speaker 1: that offensive line is, how good they can move people
- 10:35Speaker 1: out the way and create holes.
- 10:39Speaker 2: That's not where I would went with.
- 10:40Speaker 3: It, staying in the NFC West San Francisco forty nine
- 10:44Speaker 3: ers did not have a pick in the first round,
- 10:45Speaker 3: but they traded back twice. You know, they got some
- 10:48Speaker 3: extra draft capital in this draft, and they sit at
- 10:50Speaker 3: top of the first or top of the second round
- 10:53Speaker 3: on Day two. What do you think of this strategy. Obviously,
- 10:57Speaker 3: the Niners have a couple positions of need that they
- 11:00Speaker 3: need to fill, they pick up some extra draft capital.
- 11:02Speaker 3: A lot of folks have talked about the tail end
- 11:04Speaker 3: of this first round, everyone kind of being in the
- 11:07Speaker 3: same bucket together, So it seems like a decent strategy
- 11:10Speaker 3: for the Niners. What do you think of how they
- 11:13Speaker 3: played out the first round.
- 11:15Speaker 1: Well, it seemed like they were comfortable if certain players
- 11:19Speaker 1: dropped to that spot. I think case conception was a
- 11:22Speaker 1: guy that if he would have dropped to twenty seven,
- 11:24Speaker 1: they would have felt comfortable they would have picked him
- 11:26Speaker 1: up and.
- 11:28Speaker 2: They would have stayed put.
- 11:29Speaker 1: But obviously he went a lot earlier in the draft
- 11:32Speaker 1: than that spot, so they felt like they can still
- 11:36Speaker 1: get the guy that. They feel like they can still
- 11:39Speaker 1: get the guy they want and move back into the
- 11:41Speaker 1: second they don't have to have the fifth year option
- 11:43Speaker 1: with the guy, and that makes a lot of sense.
- 11:45Speaker 1: That makes a lot of sense. If you don't think
- 11:47Speaker 1: any of the players after pick fifteen or first round
- 11:51Speaker 1: graded players, then you wouldn't necessarily want to have that
- 11:55Speaker 1: extra year of security with him. So it makes sense
- 11:59Speaker 1: to move back into the second around and saves you
- 12:00Speaker 1: some money and salary cap. It saves you some headache
- 12:03Speaker 1: down the line, and provides flexibility to still get the
- 12:08Speaker 1: guy you want at the top of a second. Today's
- 12:11Speaker 1: show is brought to you by a presenting sponsor, hard

- 13:55Speaker 3: Let's talk about the number one overall pick Fernanda Mendoza
- 13:59Speaker 3: to Indiana. Obviously, the Indiana Hoosiers last year, took the
- 14:02Speaker 3: world by storm, winning the College Football Playoff national title,
- 14:08Speaker 3: and for NANDL. Mendoza was at the forefront of that.
- 14:11Speaker 3: I know you're not exceptionally high on his game, Richard,
- 14:14Speaker 3: but what he was able to achieve at Indiana, a
- 14:18Speaker 3: football program that historically has never been a national title contender,
- 14:22Speaker 3: for them to take that and knock off the likes
- 14:25Speaker 3: of Alabama on his way to this national title, do
- 14:29Speaker 3: you not have any belief that for Nando Mendoza can
- 14:32Speaker 3: be the guy, you know, especially under Tom Brady's guidance,
- 14:36Speaker 3: to you know, bring some life back into the Las
- 14:38Speaker 3: Vegas Raiders organization.
- 14:42Speaker 1: Well, let's let's understand how much Tom Brady's involved. You know,
- 14:48Speaker 1: if we're Tom Brady was involved with him last year
- 14:50Speaker 1: and they're picking number one in draft, So.
- 14:52Speaker 2: It's not it's not all on Tom Brady.
- 14:55Speaker 1: You know, at the end of the day, this football
- 14:57Speaker 1: team doesn't have a ton of talent, have holes at
- 15:01Speaker 1: a lot of positions, and they have to play better.
- 15:05Speaker 1: It's gonna be It's gonna be interesting because he can
- 15:10Speaker 1: be a good quarterback. He's shown that with the great
- 15:13Speaker 1: supporting cast. He's not gonna have a great supporting cast anymore?
- 15:18Speaker 1: So what can he do? That's why you get picked
- 15:20Speaker 1: in the number number one in the draft because that
- 15:22Speaker 1: team wasn't very good the year before. So it's gonna
- 15:26Speaker 1: be interesting to see how he operates without a great
- 15:28Speaker 1: supporting cast. Can he elevate the guys around him to
- 15:32Speaker 1: higher heights? And that's to be seen. Last year he
- 15:35Speaker 1: had threw forty one touchdowns six interceptions. Can he have
- 15:38Speaker 1: that kind of season with less of a supporting cast
- 15:42Speaker 1: at the receiver? You got asked in genty in the backfield.
- 15:45Speaker 1: He got more comfortable as the season progressed, but he
- 15:48Speaker 1: wasn't great early on. There was a whole conversation about
- 15:52Speaker 1: his stands. Whether you know he's too low in his stands.
- 15:55Speaker 1: He doesn't have the Michael Meyers stance that he had
- 15:57Speaker 1: in college. When he got back to that saw to
- 16:00Speaker 1: play a little bit better. But I just don't know.
- 16:03Speaker 1: I don't I will well, I'm in a wait and
- 16:07Speaker 1: see mode, especially for quarterbacks in this league. Will they
- 16:11Speaker 1: allow him to sit behind Kirk Cousins and learn that
- 16:15Speaker 1: usually doesn't happen with the number one pick. But I
- 16:18Speaker 1: think that's the smart way to do things and we'll
- 16:21Speaker 1: see if that they agree.
- 16:23Speaker 3: Richard, I'll be honest with you, I don't know if
- 16:25Speaker 3: he needs that level of development. I think Kirk Cousin
- 16:28Speaker 3: is going to be more of a clipboard guy that's
- 16:29Speaker 3: going to be coaching him from the sidelines this year.
- 16:31Speaker 3: I believe in Fernando Mendoz. I'm with you. I don't
- 16:34Speaker 3: think the Raiders have the weapons, especially on the outside,
- 16:37Speaker 3: but you know what I mean for what this guy
- 16:40Speaker 3: was able to achieve at Indiana last year, and the
- 16:42Speaker 3: most dominant run that they've had in school history by
- 16:45Speaker 3: far and away, and frankly, one of the more dominant
- 16:47Speaker 3: runs that we've seen in college football over the last
- 16:49Speaker 3: fifteen years. Richard, He's got Brock Bowers. I think Brock
- 16:54Speaker 3: Baher is going to be fed the ball a lot.
- 16:56Speaker 3: And I like Fernando Mendoza for the long haul. I
- 16:59Speaker 3: don't necessarily like them week one, you know, I don't
- 17:02Speaker 3: like this Raiders organization week one, but I like Fernando
- 17:04Speaker 3: Mendoza for the long haul. With this organization, I like
- 17:07Speaker 3: the pick. I think the Raiders got themselves a winner
- 17:10Speaker 3: and someone that can lead this franchise into the future.
- 17:13Speaker 3: Let's talk a little bit about the Tennessee Titans, Richard,
- 17:16Speaker 3: this team needed a ton of bodies in and they
- 17:20Speaker 3: end up landing on Carnell Tate, which doesn't shock me
- 17:23Speaker 3: at all. They needed a wide receiver, they need someone
- 17:26Speaker 3: to put with cam Ward. I think with Jeremiah Love
- 17:29Speaker 3: off the board, it made wide receiver a little bit
- 17:32Speaker 3: more obvious for them. But the question is it is
- 17:36Speaker 3: Carnel Tait another one of these top tier Ohio state
- 17:39Speaker 3: wide receivers that we've seen come off the boards in
- 17:42Speaker 3: recent years. Richard, what are your thoughts on this pick
- 17:45Speaker 3: and your thought on Carnell Tate's game.
- 17:49Speaker 1: It's just boring, you know, I don't see it as exciting.
- 17:52Speaker 1: You know, we talking about a guy who went number
- 17:54Speaker 1: four in the National Football League Draft this year and
- 17:57Speaker 1: wasn't the best receiver on his team. Like I just
- 18:00Speaker 1: I just don't get that. I don't I don't get
- 18:02Speaker 1: how you can go number four and you're not the
- 18:04Speaker 1: best receiver on your team.
- 18:05Speaker 2: And maybe I'm wrong.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Maybe he's gonna be dynamic and do all these special things,
- 18:09Speaker 1: but it wasn't on tape. It's not anything flashy. If
- 18:12Speaker 1: you compare him to Jackson Smith and Jigbug, Chris Olave,
- 18:16Speaker 1: Garrett Wilson. Would he compare what is he drafted ahead
- 18:19Speaker 1: of those guys in any draft? I don't think he is.
- 18:22Speaker 1: And so that's the part that has me scratching my head,
- 18:25Speaker 1: like at four, you had to get him at four.
- 18:29Speaker 1: And maybe maybe I'm just a pessimist, Maybe I'm just
- 18:33Speaker 1: you know, back in my day, but I don't see
- 18:37Speaker 1: the number four pick. You usually at the top five pick,
- 18:39Speaker 1: you see flashes, big flashes on tape where you're like,
- 18:42Speaker 1: oh my god, this guy is a monster. This guy
- 18:44Speaker 1: is a generational talent. Will he be a good receiver
- 18:49Speaker 1: in the National Football League?
- 18:50Speaker 2: I think so.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I think he'll be He'll be fine, maybe a great
- 18:53Speaker 1: number two receiver, but I don't think a dominant number one,
- 18:56Speaker 1: which you expect to get at the number four pick.
- 19:00Speaker 2: I don't.
- 19:00Speaker 1: I don't see that. And I know he went to
- 19:02Speaker 1: Ohio State, and Ohio State is known to be a
- 19:04Speaker 1: receiver factory and receiver receiver receiver, but just going to
- 19:08Speaker 1: Ohio State isn't enough. Now, if this was Jeremiah uh,
- 19:11Speaker 1: it just Jeremiah Smith and somebody said they're taking him
- 19:15Speaker 1: with number four pick, we wouldn't better. Eyelash at it. Yep,
- 19:18Speaker 1: get him number two, number three, number four, number one.
- 19:22Speaker 1: You know, some people would say he probably could have
- 19:25Speaker 1: went number one in this draft. But I just don't
- 19:28Speaker 1: see the same excitement for Carnell Tait. I think, I
- 19:32Speaker 1: don't know. It just felt like they did it just
- 19:34Speaker 1: because you know, he's the receiver on the board, the
- 19:38Speaker 1: the top receiver. Jordan Tyson has injury issues, casey conception,
- 19:43Speaker 1: there's question marks around him. So they needed a receiver
- 19:46Speaker 1: and they said, hey, this is this is I guess
- 19:48Speaker 1: is the guy.
- 19:49Speaker 2: I guess.
- 19:52Speaker 3: I guess too, Richard WARDO, It's a wait and see
- 19:54Speaker 3: with me for Carnel Tate, and I let you hit
- 19:57Speaker 3: the nail on the head. Jeremiah Smith was the best,
- 20:00Speaker 3: best wide receiver, best football player on that team for
- 20:02Speaker 3: Ohio State last year.
- 20:05Speaker 4: But we'll see.
- 20:06Speaker 3: The Titans are desperately needy for skill position players and
- 20:11Speaker 3: hopefully this works out for them. They compare him with
- 20:13Speaker 3: cam Ward the Chiefs. Richard picking in the top ten
- 20:18Speaker 3: the Kansas City Chiefs. Holy cow, who would have thought
- 20:21Speaker 3: that they end up trading up with the Cleveland Browns
- 20:23Speaker 3: move from the nine spot to the sixth spot only
- 20:26Speaker 3: give up a third and a fifth to jump three spots.
- 20:29Speaker 3: That's kind of head scratching. They end up with Mansur
- 20:32Speaker 3: Delaine out of LSU. Obviously, I know you like his game,
- 20:37Speaker 3: but let's talk a little bit about the business of
- 20:39Speaker 3: football behind this move. The Kansas City Chiefs are in
- 20:43Speaker 3: desperate need of a cornerback, losing Jalen Watson and McDuffie
- 20:46Speaker 3: in this offseason, both to the Rams, so obviously they're
- 20:49Speaker 3: going to be targeted a corner. Do you like the
- 20:52Speaker 3: idea of jumping up three spots, leveraging a little bit
- 20:55Speaker 3: of draft capital to move up and get Mansur Delaane
- 20:58Speaker 3: for the Kansas City Chiefs?
- 21:01Speaker 1: Yes, yes, I like that a lot. I think he
- 21:03Speaker 1: fits a spag scheme. They're gonna run a lot of
- 21:06Speaker 1: man man coverage. That's a lot of what he ran
- 21:08Speaker 1: at LSU. That's what they dealt with in sec. He's
- 21:13Speaker 1: a hand and glove fit for what they want to do.
- 21:16Speaker 1: They moved up to get him because he was the
- 21:17Speaker 1: top corner in this draft, and I think it's gonna
- 21:21Speaker 1: be a phenomenal fit. I think that's the guy they wanted.
- 21:24Speaker 1: They didn't have to give up a ton to get him,
- 21:27Speaker 1: and they got him. He improves their ball club feels
- 21:30Speaker 1: an obvious need, a huge gaping void at the cornerback
- 21:34Speaker 1: position after losing your two starters. Will he be targeted
- 21:38Speaker 1: some being a rookie, no question about it. But I
- 21:41Speaker 1: think this is the spot, this is a scheme, this
- 21:43Speaker 1: is the right fit for him, and so I think
- 21:47Speaker 1: this is one of the best picks of the draft,
- 21:49Speaker 1: one of the best picks at the top of the
- 21:51Speaker 1: top ten in the first round.
- 21:52Speaker 3: You know, I don't mind the pick from a need perspective,
- 21:55Speaker 3: but I just think about the Kansas City Chiefs and
- 21:58Speaker 3: I think about what they're lacking a little bit of,
- 22:00Speaker 3: you know, obviously an aging Travis Kelcey, and they're really
- 22:04Speaker 3: only safety blecket blanket on the wide receiver side of
- 22:07Speaker 3: things is Rashi Rice. I think with Jordan Tyson staring
- 22:10Speaker 3: at them in the face, that could be another weapon
- 22:13Speaker 3: for Patrick Mahomes to just tip the scales for this
- 22:16Speaker 3: Kansas City Chiefs organization into the future. So if it
- 22:20Speaker 3: was me, I don't mind the pick, but I would
- 22:23Speaker 3: have steered towards Jordan Tyson. Nonetheless, while to see the
- 22:27Speaker 3: Chiefs picking in the top six of this draft. On
- 22:30Speaker 3: the other side of that is the Cleveland Browns, who
- 22:32Speaker 3: obviously had a need for the offensive line position. They
- 22:35Speaker 3: specifically target to target a tackle and they end up
- 22:38Speaker 3: trading back and tinker Spencer Finot out of Utah. Do
- 22:43Speaker 3: you think the Cleveland Browns did the right thing and
- 22:46Speaker 3: moving back here picking up a little bit extra draft capital.
- 22:52Speaker 1: Yeah. I think that was the guy that we're going
- 22:54Speaker 1: to pick at six. So if they could get him
- 22:57Speaker 1: at nine and they felt comfortable with that, I think
- 22:59Speaker 1: may they could have got a little bit more draft capital.
- 23:02Speaker 1: They could have squeezed the limit a little bit more
- 23:03Speaker 1: than they did. But they were able to get the
- 23:06Speaker 1: guy that they were going to target at six and
- 23:08Speaker 1: get draft capital. It's a win win for them. And
- 23:11Speaker 1: then they were able to get Casey Conception later on
- 23:15Speaker 1: in the draft, and I think they feel really good
- 23:17Speaker 1: about his explosiveness and what he can do in the
- 23:19Speaker 1: punt return game and things like that. So I think
- 23:22Speaker 1: that's a win win. They got more explosive on offense,
- 23:24Speaker 1: they got a big time protector, future franchise tackle. I
- 23:29Speaker 1: think in any world, you feel really good about that.
- 23:32Speaker 4: Let's talk about Jordan Tyson.
- 23:34Speaker 3: We already talked a little bit about him earlier, but
- 23:36Speaker 3: he goes to the Saints at eight a little bit
- 23:39Speaker 3: of a surprise given you know, even the analysts are
- 23:41Speaker 3: talking about how good of a player Jordan Tyson is,
- 23:44Speaker 3: how he would be regarded as a top talent at
- 23:46Speaker 3: the wide receiver position on that board if it won't
- 23:49Speaker 3: for his injuries. He battled hamstring injuries throughout college. But
- 23:53Speaker 3: he goes to the Saints and the Saints are young.
- 23:56Speaker 3: You know, they drafted Tyler Shuck last year. They've got
- 24:00Speaker 3: They're partnering him up with a number of other solid
- 24:03Speaker 3: pieces there. Travis Etn Chris Olave, what do you think
- 24:08Speaker 3: of Jordan Tyson to the Saints and what do you
- 24:11Speaker 3: think of the Saints overall? They're finally past being in
- 24:15Speaker 3: cap held in purgatory. They were pushing everything to the
- 24:19Speaker 3: future with all this dead money cap hits, and here
- 24:22Speaker 3: we are they're finally out of that. Do you think
- 24:24Speaker 3: that the light at the end of the tunnel is
- 24:26Speaker 3: going to yield success for this New Orleans Saints team
- 24:29Speaker 3: this year?
- 24:38Speaker 2: I mean maybe maybe. I think they're starting to build up.
- 24:42Speaker 1: I think they they they're really high on Tyler Shaw
- 24:46Speaker 1: higher than I probably would be, but Kellen Moore surrounded
- 24:51Speaker 1: him with weapons. Now you put Jordan Tyson, you got
- 24:54Speaker 1: the injury concerns, but he's an incredible weapon went on
- 24:57Speaker 1: the field. He's an incredibly explosive receiver. He's gotten comparisons,
- 25:01Speaker 1: uh to Marii Cooper and Odell Beckham junior. And if
- 25:04Speaker 1: he can live up to those kind of expectations and
- 25:07Speaker 1: those kind of comps, then they've got a heck of
- 25:10Speaker 1: a pick. They've already got Chris o'lave and what he
- 25:13Speaker 1: can do with that offense. If they can get some protection.
- 25:16Speaker 1: Tyler Shust showed flashes last year. If he can be
- 25:19Speaker 1: consistent throughout the season, we'll see. We'll see what they
- 25:23Speaker 1: can do in New Orleans. I mean, the NFC South
- 25:26Speaker 1: has always kind of been, uh, you know, up and down.
- 25:30Speaker 1: It's it's been kind of middle to pack up. Anybody
- 25:32Speaker 1: can win it, and last year it was a perfect example.
- 25:35Speaker 3: It's always up for prea And that's why I say
- 25:38Speaker 3: I like this team.
- 25:39Speaker 4: I liked what they've done.
- 25:39Speaker 3: They're they're finally you know, out of this cap situation
- 25:43Speaker 3: that they've been in for years, and you see it
- 25:45Speaker 3: they're adding Travis etm We'll see what they do with
- 25:47Speaker 3: Alvin Kamara, but Tyler Shark, it seems like they got
- 25:51Speaker 3: a guy that they trust surrounding him with weapons. I
- 25:55Speaker 3: think the snate Saints could sneak up on this division
- 25:58Speaker 3: at least and win it and sneak into.
- 25:59Speaker 4: The playoffs that way. But we shall see.
- 26:02Speaker 3: The Dallas Cowboys were another team with two first round picks,
- 26:06Speaker 3: and Caleb Downs slips to them at twelve, which is
- 26:09Speaker 3: it's a great fit for them, and then they had
- 26:11Speaker 3: to taking Malachi Lawrence, the edge rusher out of UCF
- 26:15Speaker 3: later in the first What do you what do you
- 26:18Speaker 3: think of the Cowboys draft picks this year? There was
- 26:21Speaker 3: so many question marks surrounding this team last year trading
- 26:25Speaker 3: away Micah Parsons. Fast forward a year later. I really
- 26:29Speaker 3: like where the Dallas Cowboy organization is sitting, and they've
- 26:33Speaker 3: got an influx of young talent on the defensive side
- 26:35Speaker 3: of the ball.
- 26:36Speaker 4: What do you make of these picks, Mitchell.
- 26:38Speaker 1: They've done a really great job of solidifying their defensive
- 26:41Speaker 1: line with Quinn Williams and Kenny Clark, so you you
- 26:45Speaker 1: kind of see what they were doing. When when when
- 26:47Speaker 1: you they start to try to replace the production of Michaeh.
- 26:51Speaker 2: Parsons.
- 26:52Speaker 1: Then you got Rashwan Geary coming from Green Bay, which
- 26:56Speaker 1: is which is hilarious. Uh, you know, changing space is
- 27:00Speaker 1: kind of deal. But to continue to solidify that defense
- 27:04Speaker 1: with with Caleb Downs at safety now and Malachi Lawrence,
- 27:09Speaker 1: it's gonna be a really great attacking defense. They've been
- 27:13Speaker 1: great on offense. They've been able to put up points
- 27:15Speaker 1: and put up yardage with the best of them. The
- 27:19Speaker 1: Ceedee Lamb and Dak Prescott and George Pickens obviously came
- 27:26Speaker 1: into the team last year. Is on the franchise tag.
- 27:29Speaker 1: They can put up points, they can score Now, if
- 27:32Speaker 1: they can stop people and attack and rush the passer
- 27:35Speaker 1: at a high level, I think this becomes a much
- 27:37Speaker 1: more dangerous Dallas Cowboys team and you start to see
- 27:40Speaker 1: the vision they had when they did decided not to
- 27:43Speaker 1: pay Michael Parsons and take the draft capital. But can
- 27:47Speaker 1: it lead to a super Bowl? That's always the biggest question.
- 27:51Speaker 1: Can this lead to a super Bowl for the Dallas Cowboys,
- 27:54Speaker 1: because that's the end goal. If Green Bay and Green
- 27:58Speaker 1: Bay didn't have a great season, but they would into
- 28:00Speaker 1: the playoffs and Dallas Cowboys didn't, So it looks like
- 28:02Speaker 1: Green Bay's winning on the trade from that front in
- 28:05Speaker 1: the first year. If the Dallas Cowboys can somehow get
- 28:08Speaker 1: to an NFC Championship, get to a Super Bowl, get
- 28:11Speaker 1: out of the Divisional, you start to feel like maybe
- 28:15Speaker 1: the Dallas Cowboys long term plan and vision was correct
- 28:19Speaker 1: in this situation. But it's still wait and see.
- 28:21Speaker 3: It is, but it does. It's starting to make a
- 28:23Speaker 3: lot more sense. Jerry Jones, who would have thunk Richard.
- 28:28Speaker 3: Let's talk about another team in that same division. The
- 28:30Speaker 3: New York Giants the beneficiaries of two top ten picks,
- 28:34Speaker 3: you know, obviously trading Dexter Lawrence for the number ten
- 28:37Speaker 3: pick from Cincinnati Bengals to utilize that pick to take
- 28:41Speaker 3: take Francis Mauioga out of Miami, and then they get
- 28:45Speaker 3: rvl Rits Reese who slides to them at Ohio State.
- 28:49Speaker 3: They get another edge rusher, and this team is loaded
- 28:52Speaker 3: on the edge. Obviously, the New York Giants have their
- 28:56Speaker 3: identity and that's on the defensive front.
- 28:58Speaker 4: Seven.
- 28:59Speaker 3: You couple Rvel Reese with Abduall Carter, with Kevon Thibodeau
- 29:03Speaker 3: with Brian Burns.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
- 29:07Speaker 3: It's starting to look like the New York Giants teams
- 29:09Speaker 3: of old. What do you make of this draft strategy
- 29:12Speaker 3: by the New York Giants?
- 29:13Speaker 4: Do you like it?
- 29:17Speaker 1: I would love it if it if it's productive. You know,
- 29:21Speaker 1: Abduall Carter didn't have the production that that maybe everybody
- 29:25Speaker 1: hoped for when he was drafted and early in the draft.
- 29:30Speaker 1: I think on paper, it looks incredible, it looks menacing,
- 29:34Speaker 1: it looks like they're gonna harass quarterbacks. But even with
- 29:38Speaker 1: Dexter Lawrence and and all those guys, it wasn't living
- 29:42Speaker 1: up to the hype that that that you would have
- 29:45Speaker 1: you would have thought with how great it looks on paper.
- 29:47Speaker 1: So maybe with a new coaching staff, a new scheme,
- 29:52Speaker 1: it'll come through better.
- 29:53Speaker 2: But I'd like it.
- 29:55Speaker 1: I like investing in pass rushers. I think that's a
- 29:59Speaker 1: way to the super is continue to have great pass rushers.
- 30:02Speaker 1: We've seen it with the Philadelphia Eagles.
- 30:05Speaker 2: We saw it.
- 30:06Speaker 1: With with the Kansas City Chiefs and Chris Jones and
- 30:10Speaker 1: all those guys getting to the quarterback. We've seen it
- 30:12Speaker 1: when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers kind of blitzed Patrick Mahomes
- 30:16Speaker 1: in that Super Bowl. They were getting to the quarterback,
- 30:18Speaker 1: they were abusing those tackles. But you got to put
- 30:22Speaker 1: it on tape. You got to actually execute. Now, Abdiel
- 30:26Speaker 1: Carter will be better in his second year. Brian Burns
- 30:28Speaker 1: had an incredible season last year. Kayvon Thibodeau has been solid.
- 30:33Speaker 1: But all of them on the field at the same time,
- 30:36Speaker 1: you have to get real production. You're talking about four
- 30:39Speaker 1: or five sacks of game and can they do that.
- 30:42Speaker 2: I'm not sure. You got to put it on tape.
- 30:44Speaker 2: It looks great on paper.
- 30:45Speaker 1: This looks like a phenomenal pass rush on paper, but
- 30:49Speaker 1: Super Bowls and games aren't won on paper.
- 30:51Speaker 2: They're won on the field. So they got to put
- 30:53Speaker 2: it on tape.
- 30:53Speaker 3: If this works out for the Giants. So, I mean,
- 30:56Speaker 3: you've seen the identity from John harball trickle into this team,
- 31:00Speaker 3: right They're they're dressing the big bodies up front. You
- 31:03Speaker 3: get the offensive tackle out on Miami Maioa and rbl Reese.
- 31:08Speaker 3: I love what John Harbrough is bringing to this New
- 31:11Speaker 3: York Giants organization. They desperately needed an influx of talent.
- 31:16Speaker 3: We'll see if it pays off for them.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Man.
- 31:18Speaker 3: I really am high on John Harble with the Giants.
- 31:22Speaker 3: One of the wilder stories that we saw was McKay
- 31:27Speaker 3: lemon right out of USC. He's on the phone allegedly
- 31:31Speaker 3: with the Pittsburgh Steelers and they're telling him they're.
- 31:35Speaker 4: Going to draft them. Well, not so fast.
- 31:37Speaker 3: The Philadelphia Eagles swoop in and pluck him from the
- 31:43Speaker 3: Pittsburgh Steelers.
- 31:44Speaker 4: Grasp.
- 31:45Speaker 3: Mkay Lemon slipped in this draft. A lot of folks
- 31:48Speaker 3: had high hopes for him. What do you make of
- 31:50Speaker 3: this pick?
- 31:53Speaker 1: I mean it's it's again another solid pick. There were,
- 31:57Speaker 1: you know, people who love mackay Lemon. There's people who thought,
- 32:01Speaker 1: you know, he may be an early second round pick.
- 32:03Speaker 1: So we'll see how he pans out. Really productive at USC.
- 32:10Speaker 1: This is a very interesting situation. I think every year
- 32:13Speaker 1: the draft never ceases to amaze or surprise you. Something
- 32:16Speaker 1: new happens in the draft just about every year, and
- 32:19Speaker 1: this was definitely new. For a guy to be on
- 32:20Speaker 1: the phone with a team, you know, feeling like he's
- 32:23Speaker 1: living out his dream and realizing, hey, he just got drafted,
- 32:26Speaker 1: and for another for his family members and agents to
- 32:29Speaker 1: come up to him mid conversation and tell him, hey,
- 32:32Speaker 1: you just got picked by another team.
- 32:34Speaker 2: It's different.
- 32:35Speaker 1: Then the Pittsburgh Steelers are forced to go an entirely
- 32:39Speaker 1: different direction. There are rumors that they just auto picked
- 32:42Speaker 1: a tackle after him, a guy they didn't really want,
- 32:45Speaker 1: clearly because they thought they got Makay Lemon. So it's
- 32:52Speaker 1: to draft, it's to draft. We'll see how it works
- 32:54Speaker 1: out for Philly. We'll see what this means for AJ Brown.
- 32:56Speaker 1: There was already conversation that it's already a sign and
- 33:00Speaker 1: steal delivered deal to the New England Patriots, who who
- 33:03Speaker 1: are going who had a really interesting draft already, and
- 33:06Speaker 1: they're gonna have an interesting third day at a draft
- 33:09Speaker 1: because their head coach isn't going to be there for
- 33:12Speaker 1: personal reasons apparently.
- 33:14Speaker 2: But I think I.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Think this is a good move for the Eagles, solidifying
- 33:18Speaker 1: that receiving core and obviously insurance in case they lose
- 33:22Speaker 1: a J.
- 33:22Speaker 4: Brown. Yeah.
- 33:23Speaker 3: I like it as well, And it's got to be
- 33:25Speaker 3: tough to see for the rest of the division. And
- 33:27Speaker 3: more more head scratching with that is the fact that
- 33:29Speaker 3: we saw an indivision trade. The Philadelphia Eagles traded with
- 33:33Speaker 3: the Dallas Cowboys to move up and take that pick.
- 33:36Speaker 4: We'll see if it works out.
- 33:37Speaker 3: And Rich, I got to ask before we wrap up,
- 33:40Speaker 3: what was your favorite pick of the first round.
- 33:45Speaker 1: I still think it's Kens City Chiefs Monsieur Delaine. I
- 33:49Speaker 1: like defense. I like a great corner. He was the
- 33:51Speaker 1: top corner pick this year, multiple picks, I mean eight
- 33:55Speaker 1: picks in college. I think he fits his scheme well.
- 33:58Speaker 1: I think he's going to be another dominant coin for
- 34:00Speaker 1: the Kansas City Chiefs.
- 34:03Speaker 3: I like, yeah, I'm I'm with you. I like the
- 34:06Speaker 3: position of need fit. Again, if I were them, I
- 34:08Speaker 3: would have gone Jordan Tyson. I personally favorite Caleb Downs.
- 34:11Speaker 3: Loved the pick. He slid to them off the Giant
- 34:14Speaker 3: Era all the way to the twelve pick with the
- 34:16Speaker 3: Cowboys desperately needed them. Love the pick. And then finally, Rich,
- 34:20Speaker 3: who do you think won the first round of the draft?
- 34:26Speaker 1: I guess I would say I would say the Giants.
- 34:28Speaker 1: You know, anytime you solidify your offensive and defensive line,
- 34:30Speaker 1: that's where championships are won. It's in the trenches. We've
- 34:33Speaker 1: talked about this before. They did a great job of
- 34:35Speaker 1: making sure that they found foundational pieces in that draft.
- 34:39Speaker 1: Does this make other guys available? Is Kaevon Thibodeau going
- 34:43Speaker 1: to be on the on the trade block potentially, or
- 34:46Speaker 1: or one of the other guys on trade block, I
- 34:48Speaker 1: would expect, so I would expect them to get some
- 34:50Speaker 1: calls for Kaevon Thibodeau, potentially Brian Burns. I don't think
- 34:53Speaker 1: they move on from him, but I always like when
- 34:57Speaker 1: you solidify the trenches, especially if you can do it
- 34:59Speaker 1: in first.
- 35:00Speaker 3: We're sure that concludes that our recap of the first
- 35:03Speaker 3: round of the NFL Draft. We're gonna have a lot
- 35:04Speaker 3: more action this weekend, Richard, I will let you sign
- 35:08Speaker 3: us off, my man.
- 35:09Speaker 1: As always, we appreciate you guys joining us. Hopefully your
- 35:11Speaker 1: team picked the guy you wanted if they didn't be
- 35:15Speaker 1: careful who you boo, because there were people in Houston
- 35:18Speaker 1: booing JJ Watts pick. There were people in Green Bay
- 35:22Speaker 1: booing Aaron Rodgers pick. You never know when you're picking
- 35:26Speaker 1: one of the best guys in your franchise's history. So
- 35:29Speaker 1: just wait and see how it all pans out. Because
- 35:32Speaker 1: sometimes you're overly excited about a guy that's not gonna
- 35:35Speaker 1: help you win any ball games. That's just how it
- 35:37Speaker 1: goes in the National Football League. But stay tuned. We
- 35:40Speaker 1: appreciate you joining us as always. You could be anywhere
- 35:43Speaker 1: in the world, but you hear with us.
- 35:44Speaker 2: We will see you next time.
