Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Hey Discos, need a little more Disgraceland in your life?
- 0:05Speaker 1: Just a touch to get you through? Yeah, me too.
- 0:08Speaker 1: This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome
- 0:12Speaker 1: to Disgraceland, the after party. Do people actually believe that
- 0:32Speaker 1: Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain or did they just hate
- 0:36Speaker 1: Courtney Love so much that they cannot accept the fact
- 0:41Speaker 1: that Kurt killed himself? Um, I've asked this question a
- 0:47Speaker 1: couple of times before. The first time it came up,
- 0:50Speaker 1: of course, was when we released originally released our Nirvana episodes,
- 0:54Speaker 1: our two part story. It's basically on Kurt and Courtney. Um,
- 0:58Speaker 1: And we had them in the Rewind feed this past weekend.
- 1:03Speaker 1: And we excerpted parts of that story for some content
- 1:07Speaker 1: on Instagram. And the response has been, I mean, I
- 1:11Speaker 1: knew the response was going to be what it was.
- 1:13Speaker 1: I didn't know it was going to be as intense
- 1:17Speaker 1: as it was. I know that there's a large group
- 1:20Speaker 1: of people out there who believe what they believe about
- 1:23Speaker 1: Courtney Love. And it's not what I believe, clearly. And
- 1:27Speaker 1: I knew that they were going to be upset by
- 1:29Speaker 1: the fact that we were pointing out this anecdote from
- 1:32Speaker 1: the couple's past where Kurt overdosed. I talked about this
- 1:36Speaker 1: last week in the after party, he overdosed and Courtney
- 1:38Speaker 1: saved his life. Um, the response is not only intense.
- 1:44Speaker 1: This is, again, this is on social media. It's on Instagram. It's,
- 1:46Speaker 1: it's also, it's also pretty hysterical. Um, It's very flattering, guys,
- 1:52Speaker 1: to think that Courtney Love would pay me to do
- 1:57Speaker 1: publicity for her. It's very flattering to think that people
- 2:05Speaker 1: believe that I'm an industry plant. But it is kind
- 2:09Speaker 1: of ridiculous and fascinating. It's more fascinating to me than
- 2:14Speaker 1: it is ridiculous. And it deserves some unpacking. Because... Again,
- 2:20Speaker 1: I've looked at everything out there, including, of course, Soaked
- 2:23Speaker 1: in Bleach, including the new so-called evidence that has come
- 2:29Speaker 1: out over the last 12 to 18 months, whatever it is.
- 2:33Speaker 1: And yes, there's a lot of compelling, I don't want
- 2:41Speaker 1: to call it evidence, circumstances, compelling circumstance, excuse me, to
- 2:47Speaker 1: the death of Kurt. there's a lot you could pull
- 2:51Speaker 1: to paint some sort of narrative, some sort of picture
- 2:55Speaker 1: here that points fingers at Courtney Love, but there's no
- 2:59Speaker 1: actual evidence. And if there were, my God, man, don't
- 3:04Speaker 1: you think that Courtney Love would be held accountable? Okay,
- 3:09Speaker 1: but hold on. Let's just go back. I'm more interested
- 3:12Speaker 1: in the why, like where this disdain comes from. Now,
- 3:17Speaker 1: on the one hand, I get it. Courtney Love is
- 3:22Speaker 1: an outrageous person. She always has been, even in the
- 3:26Speaker 1: last two decades of her career here, where she hasn't
- 3:28Speaker 1: really been as in the public eye as she was
- 3:32Speaker 1: in the 90s and in the early 2000s. She is
- 3:35Speaker 1: still outrageous, truly. In the truest sense of that word,
- 3:41Speaker 1: she is outrageous. She says things that are meant to
- 3:46Speaker 1: drive you crazy, to get attention. She does truly outrageous things.
- 3:50Speaker 1: I know two people personally who went to her house
- 3:52Speaker 1: and had the same story. She answered the door naked.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And that's just me. I cannot imagine what it's like
- 4:03Speaker 1: for people who actually know Courtney Love. But I'm guessing
- 4:06Speaker 1: that most of the people in the comments section on
- 4:09Speaker 1: our Instagram page do not know Courtney Love. And I'm
- 4:13Speaker 1: also pretty sure that most of the people who are
- 4:15Speaker 1: saying these ridiculous things, making these ridiculous comments, aren't Disgraceland
- 4:21Speaker 1: podcast followers. Some of them are. Most of them are
- 4:25Speaker 1: just Disgraceland Instagram followers. And there's a difference. A lack
- 4:29Speaker 1: of understanding of nuance, I think, is the main difference.
- 4:32Speaker 1: But whatever, that's a different story. My point is, I
- 4:35Speaker 1: don't know, amongst those of you who are listening now,
- 4:39Speaker 1: I don't know how many of you are as.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Convinced that Courtney Love killed Kurt as a large portion
- 4:47Speaker 1: of people on the internet are. And that's because I
- 4:50Speaker 1: think most of our podcast listeners are, I think you
- 4:54Speaker 1: guys are smart. I think you guys are well-informed and
- 4:56Speaker 1: I think you know how to process information. However, I
- 4:59Speaker 1: do understand because I get the emails that there's some
- 5:03Speaker 1: of you who still think that she did it. And
- 5:07Speaker 1: I'm truly interested in hearing from you and hearing why.
- 5:11Speaker 1: But again, that's the point here. Why? Why do people
- 5:15Speaker 1: think this? Okay, she's outrageous. There's a lot of outrageous
- 5:18Speaker 1: rock stars. Does that make them killers? No, it does not.
- 5:24Speaker 1: But Courtney Love, she just scratches this particular itch for
- 5:27Speaker 1: people that is unique. She's truly hated. And I try
- 5:34Speaker 1: to not hate anybody, like nobody. I just don't believe
- 5:38Speaker 1: in hate. I don't like saying that word. I'm not
- 5:41Speaker 1: trying to get up on a moral high horse here,
- 5:43Speaker 1: but I try to get at like, okay, why is
- 5:47Speaker 1: this person doing this ridiculous stuff? And to me, Courtney
- 5:50Speaker 1: Love just strikes me as a very cold and calculating
- 5:55Speaker 1: Machiavellian type of entertainer, of which there are many in history.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And I know you're hearing these words come out of
- 6:01Speaker 1: my mouth and you're going, dude, listen to what you're saying.
- 6:04Speaker 1: These are the exact qualities of a killer. Well, it
- 6:06Speaker 1: takes a lot to kill somebody and get away with it.
- 6:08Speaker 1: A real lot, especially in the public eye, especially when
- 6:11Speaker 1: you're someone like Courtney Love. Especially when Kurt Cobain is
- 6:13Speaker 1: one of the biggest rock stars in the history of
- 6:16Speaker 1: rock and roll, in the history of pop, in the
- 6:18Speaker 1: history of entertainment. So it just doesn't stand. It just
- 6:26Speaker 1: does not pass the smell test. None of the evidence does.
- 6:30Speaker 1: And I wish I woke up this morning and had
- 6:33Speaker 1: the time to go through all the evidence again and
- 6:35Speaker 1: come here. And maybe that's what I should do. I
- 6:39Speaker 1: should actually– I've been planning on doing this Courtney Love
- 6:43Speaker 1: episode for some time. And I'm waiting for this documentary
- 6:45Speaker 1: to come out so that I have more information, more
- 6:48Speaker 1: of the story. Because I know there's going to be
- 6:50Speaker 1: real revelatory stuff in that film. And it was supposed
- 6:56Speaker 1: to be out. By now, it's not. So I keep
- 6:58Speaker 1: punting this episode down. down the line. But maybe what
- 7:02Speaker 1: I should do instead, maybe what the audience is telling
- 7:05Speaker 1: me here is I should actually litigate the facts in
- 7:09Speaker 1: an episode in a really open-minded way, in a way
- 7:15Speaker 1: that not necessarily to prove my point, but to unpack
- 7:19Speaker 1: my point and pressure test my point. Because I'm truly...
- 7:28Speaker 1: My jaw's on the floor at this reaction. I don't
- 7:33Speaker 1: mean to laugh, but it is kind of funny when
- 7:34Speaker 1: you read these comments. Now, of all the rock stars
- 7:40Speaker 1: throughout history, Courtney Love is singular. But if I had
- 7:47Speaker 1: to choose one rock star to compare her to, and
- 7:51Speaker 1: it has... Nothing to do with her relationship with Kurt Cobain.
- 7:55Speaker 1: It has nothing to do with the death of Kurt
- 7:57Speaker 1: Cobain and how he died. If I had one rock
- 8:00Speaker 1: star to compare Courtney Love to, it would be Sid Vicious.
- 8:06Speaker 1: Courtney Love is a better musician. She's a better songwriter,
- 8:09Speaker 1: of course. But as far as being an entertainer, being
- 8:13Speaker 1: a rock star, behaving like a rock star, Sid is
- 8:18Speaker 1: the best comp. Because Sid was completely outrageous as well
- 8:22Speaker 1: and said things just to get a rise out of
- 8:24Speaker 1: people and just to get attention and all those sort
- 8:26Speaker 1: of things that Courtney, I believe Courtney learned them from
- 8:29Speaker 1: Sid Vicious, from watching Sid Vicious. And there's some irony
- 8:32Speaker 1: here too, because Courtney Love is in Sid and Nancy.
- 8:37Speaker 1: But you don't get, it's interesting because Sid is caught
- 8:40Speaker 1: up in this murder mystery as well with Nancy, but
- 8:45Speaker 1: you do not get this hatred anymore. for Sid that
- 8:49Speaker 1: you get for Courtney Love. And I want to know why.
- 8:53Speaker 1: I mean, he did truly outrageous. The guy wore a
- 8:57Speaker 1: swastika for the entirety of his career, okay? I mean,
- 9:01Speaker 1: I get the context, okay? So, you know, OG punk rockers,
- 9:05Speaker 1: don't come at me for being critical of that. I'm
- 9:07Speaker 1: just pointing it out. There's a lot. My point is
- 9:10Speaker 1: that there's a lot there with Sid that could drive
- 9:14Speaker 1: you fucking crazy and cause you to be super critical
- 9:17Speaker 1: of the guy and perhaps come up with, I don't know,
- 9:20Speaker 1: wild conspiracy theories or not even, I mean, the stuff
- 9:23Speaker 1: with Nancy, it's a stone cold whodunit with Nancy, I think.
- 9:27Speaker 1: And we're going to get into that later as well.
- 9:29Speaker 1: Of course, we touched on Sid and Nancy before, but
- 9:32Speaker 1: you know, if you talk to old school, New York
- 9:35Speaker 1: punk rockers and hardcore kids, they all have a very
- 9:40Speaker 1: clear idea of who killed Nancy. And, um, I'm interested
- 9:46Speaker 1: in unpacking that, but I'm getting off topic. Why don't
- 9:52Speaker 1: people hate Sid Vicious the way that they hate Courtney Love?
- 9:58Speaker 1: What is it? I mean, is it misogyny? Is it
- 10:02Speaker 1: because he's a man, he's not a woman? I don't
- 10:04Speaker 1: think so. I don't think those of you who listen
- 10:06Speaker 1: to this podcast and are disgracing listeners and are convinced
- 10:10Speaker 1: that Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain, I don't think you're misogynist. Now,
- 10:17Speaker 1: could a large portion of the people in the disgrace
- 10:20Speaker 1: land comments on Instagram. Could that be at the core
- 10:23Speaker 1: of their belief? Perhaps. I don't know. I haven't really
- 10:28Speaker 1: dug into it. Maybe I will. There's just something about her,
- 10:34Speaker 1: or maybe there's not. Maybe I'm looking at it the
- 10:35Speaker 1: wrong way. Maybe it's because there's something about Kurt. Kurt
- 10:40Speaker 1: Cobain is a lot different than Nancy Spungen. Kurt Cobain
- 10:44Speaker 1: is at least for our generation, for Gen X, there
- 10:48Speaker 1: was nobody more important. There was nobody bigger. There was
- 10:52Speaker 1: nobody who reached as many people. There was nobody who
- 10:55Speaker 1: had the cultural impact in music. He was our John Lennon,
- 11:02Speaker 1: our Bob Dylan. He was all of it rolled into one.
- 11:07Speaker 1: And I do think there's something psychologically with music fans
- 11:11Speaker 1: where they cannot let go. I see this with Michael
- 11:15Speaker 1: Jackson fans. I see this with Elvis Presley fans and
- 11:17Speaker 1: I see it with Kurt Cobain fans. It's a little
- 11:20Speaker 1: different than it is with, I don't know, like, you know,
- 11:25Speaker 1: Lane Staley fans or pick it Tom Petty. You know
- 11:31Speaker 1: what I mean? Not that those guys weren't great. They were,
- 11:33Speaker 1: they're truly incredible, but they weren't Kurt Cobain, Michael Jackson level.
- 11:39Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying? And maybe that has something
- 11:42Speaker 1: to do with it. Maybe in the absence of actually
- 11:47Speaker 1: dealing with our sort of icon grief, we cannot accept
- 11:52Speaker 1: the fact that the answer is the answer. We don't
- 11:56Speaker 1: want to accept it because then it prompts another level
- 12:01Speaker 1: of letting go. And if we can hang on to
- 12:05Speaker 1: the I don't want to call it a conspiracy, but
- 12:08Speaker 1: if we can hang on to these, I guess it
- 12:09Speaker 1: is a conspiracy. We can hang on to these alternate theories,
- 12:12Speaker 1: whatever you want to call them about their deaths. We
- 12:15Speaker 1: can keep their, their stories alive and we can, the
- 12:18Speaker 1: myth certainly grows. And maybe that's on some sort of
- 12:22Speaker 1: subconscious psychological level, what's happening here. Or maybe people just
- 12:27Speaker 1: think Courtney Love is a fucking crazy person and, and,
- 12:31Speaker 1: and contains a capacity to, to do something like murder
- 12:34Speaker 1: her husband and get away with it for all these
- 12:36Speaker 1: years publicly, which I have a lot of respect for
- 12:41Speaker 1: Courtney Love. That might shock a lot of you, but
- 12:44Speaker 1: I don't have that level of respect for her cunningness
- 12:48Speaker 1: to think that she could pull that off. But again,
- 12:51Speaker 1: I'm going to look into it more fully. I'm going
- 12:53Speaker 1: to respect the people who are showing me no respect
- 12:58Speaker 1: in the comments, and I'm going to dig into this
- 13:02Speaker 1: and see if I have some sort of artist bias,
- 13:05Speaker 1: historical bias, whatever type of bias and see if I'm
- 13:09Speaker 1: wrong here. See if, see if I'm going to look
- 13:11Speaker 1: at this information again. I've looked at it. Like I said,
- 13:16Speaker 1: Matt really looked at it. He really went at that
- 13:18Speaker 1: dossier of info that came out about 18 months ago.
- 13:21Speaker 1: And we had a big, big talk about it. I'm
- 13:24Speaker 1: going to even watch fucking soaked in bleach again. And
- 13:28Speaker 1: that knucklehead from the mentors and that whole theory And
- 13:32Speaker 1: I'm going to entertain, I guess, all the stuff about
- 13:35Speaker 1: her dad, even though just because you were associated with
- 13:37Speaker 1: the Grateful Dead does not make you a member of
- 13:40Speaker 1: the CIA. I'm going to look into all of this,
- 13:43Speaker 1: I think. But most important, I want to hear from
- 13:46Speaker 1: you guys. I want to hear from you listeners who
- 13:49Speaker 1: don't normally engage and who think that Courtney killed Kurt.
- 13:55Speaker 1: And I want to know why. And there's no stupid
- 13:58Speaker 1: answer here, okay? There are no stupid questions. There are
- 14:01Speaker 1: no stupid answers. I really want to understand this because
- 14:04Speaker 1: it's some sort of phenomenon that's unique to rock and
- 14:07Speaker 1: roll history. And it's fascinating to me. I thought I
- 14:10Speaker 1: was done with it. I'm not. So there's that. If
- 14:12Speaker 1: you're not on Instagram and you're not following Disgraceland at DisgracelandPod,
- 14:17Speaker 1: you want to see what I'm talking about. There's maybe
- 14:21Speaker 1: four posts about Kurt and Courtney over the last week.
- 14:24Speaker 1: And there's one carousel post, which is this post that's
- 14:28Speaker 1: like a series of images of And it's a little
- 14:30Speaker 1: story that we tell along with the images, pictures, and quotes.
- 14:35Speaker 1: And that's the one that really, really got people going.
- 14:39Speaker 1: Check that out. Let me know what you think. And
- 14:41Speaker 1: email me at disgracelandpod. And I want to get into
- 14:43Speaker 1: these theories. I want to get into your thoughts. And
- 14:46Speaker 1: I want them to inform the episode that I'll probably
- 14:49Speaker 1: start to put together within the next sort of four
- 14:51Speaker 1: to six weeks, I'm guessing. And it'll be a straight
- 14:54Speaker 1: up whodunit. Obviously, we covered a lot of ground in
- 14:58Speaker 1: the Nirvana story thus far. I'm not going to retread that.
- 15:02Speaker 1: I'm just going to get into the actual death and
- 15:05Speaker 1: the theory that Courtney killed Kurt. Now, as outrageous as
- 15:11Speaker 1: this theory is, there are more outrageous theories from rock
- 15:15Speaker 1: and roll history. Truly weird, unhinged, completely ludicrous ideas about
- 15:23Speaker 1: rock stars. I've had my fun with some of these
- 15:27Speaker 1: theories before in the past. The idea that John Denver
- 15:31Speaker 1: was one of Vietnam's most prolific American assassins. The idea
- 15:37Speaker 1: that Jim Morrison is the Zodiac killer. I kind of
- 15:39Speaker 1: made that up. There's some other ones. The notion, some
- 15:43Speaker 1: people think Stevie Wonder can see. Some people think that
- 15:46Speaker 1: Jay-Z is a vampire. We're going to get into you.
- 15:49Speaker 1: some of the more outrageous rockstar conspiracy theories and have
- 15:53Speaker 1: some fun with this in the exclusive section of this episode.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Go to disgracingpod.com to sign up, become an all-access member,
- 16:01Speaker 1: unlock exclusive content just like this, plus ad-free listening. Zeth
- 16:04Speaker 1: and I will be in there momentarily, and we will
- 16:08Speaker 1: be giving you all this insanity and more. All right,
- 16:12Speaker 1: so talking Kurt and Courtney because they're in the Rewind
- 16:15Speaker 1: feed this last week, and then we released our New
- 16:19Speaker 1: episode on Screamin' Jay Hawkins this past Tuesday. Coming up
- 16:23Speaker 1: after this after party, guys, we've got a Rewind episode
- 16:25Speaker 1: on Eminem. That's going to, now that I think about it,
- 16:30Speaker 1: that's going to cause some problems as well. But Screamin'
- 16:34Speaker 1: Jay Hawkins fathered 57 children. Did you guys know this?
- 16:40Speaker 1: It's part of rock and roll mythology for sure. And
- 16:42Speaker 1: it's something that came out, I don't know, decade or
- 16:45Speaker 1: two ago. It always fascinated me. 57 children. When Jay
- 16:50Speaker 1: Hawkins died, it was revealed that those children were out
- 16:53Speaker 1: there and most of them were illegitimate and unknown to him.
- 16:57Speaker 1: A friend of his asked Screamin' Jay if he ever
- 17:01Speaker 1: sent his children money and Screamin' Jay responded, well, that's
- 17:04Speaker 1: the mother's problem. Solid dude that he is. Screamin' Jay
- 17:09Speaker 1: Hawkins is one of these guys who bounced between record
- 17:11Speaker 1: labels a as much as he bounced between wives and
- 17:14Speaker 1: girlfriends in one-night stands. And when he was on his deathbed,
- 17:18Speaker 1: he supposedly asked a new friend of his, an investment banker,
- 17:23Speaker 1: to track down all 57 of his children. So the
- 17:28Speaker 1: banker set up a website called jayskids.com and received upwards
- 17:33Speaker 1: of 2,500 submissions from people claiming to be Screamin' Jay Hawkins' progeny.
- 17:39Speaker 1: So approximately one year later, after Screamin' Jay's death, a
- 17:44Speaker 1: total of 36 legitimate children had been identified. But not
- 17:51Speaker 1: one of them went to his funeral. Now, to his
- 17:56Speaker 1: three legitimate children that he knew of, the children that
- 17:59Speaker 1: he had with his first wife, Anna Mae, Screamin' Jay
- 18:02Speaker 1: Hawkins left $ 1 each. This is... fucking crazy. I don't
- 18:10Speaker 1: understand the $ 1 thing. I really don't. Why leave them anything?
- 18:16Speaker 1: Is it just a diss? Is it a way of
- 18:18Speaker 1: being cute? Or was it legitimately a heartfelt, I got
- 18:22Speaker 1: nothing and I want to show them I care? It's
- 18:26Speaker 1: really fascinating to me. Screaming Jay Hawkins is completely fascinating
- 18:30Speaker 1: to me. You can hear all about him in the
- 18:31Speaker 1: new episode if you haven't already. Perfectly timed for the
- 18:35Speaker 1: spooky Halloween season that we have just entered. as is
- 18:39Speaker 1: the Eminem episode. Now, Elvis Presley died on the toilet.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Eminem launched his career on the toilet. Gross. I know,
- 18:45Speaker 1: grosser than the Constipation Blues song we were talking about
- 18:47Speaker 1: last week, but it is true. It was Christmas. It
- 18:50Speaker 1: was also Eminem's daughter's birthday, and Em was broke and
- 18:53Speaker 1: back in his mom's trailer. And he was constipated and
- 18:56Speaker 1: on the toilet, and he took notice of how skinny
- 18:58Speaker 1: he was, and inspiration struck. Skinny, slim, slim, shady, slim, shady.
- 19:04Speaker 1: He grabbed a nearby pen and notebook and the lines
- 19:07Speaker 1: just flowed out of him page after page of words
- 19:09Speaker 1: that became the song that would help Eminem break through
- 19:12Speaker 1: and launch his career. More than that, the Slim Shady
- 19:16Speaker 1: alter ego concept that Em conceived on the can gave
- 19:19Speaker 1: Eminem the creative shield that he needed to explore incredibly
- 19:23Speaker 1: dark themes in his raps. Themes that attracted millions of
- 19:27Speaker 1: listeners and led to his 1999 Slim Shady album going
- 19:30Speaker 1: quadruple platinum. And it all started, well, Now you know
- 19:34Speaker 1: where it started. More on Eminem in this upcoming archive
- 19:38Speaker 1: episode of the Disgrace Sam podcast. That's hitting this weekend
- 19:41Speaker 1: in the feed. Then after that on Tuesday, our new
- 19:45Speaker 1: episode on As I Lay Dying. And we're asking the question,
- 19:49Speaker 1: is this Christian music scene full of phony faith leaders? Now,
- 19:54Speaker 1: Tim Lambisa, singer for the Christian metalcore band As I
- 19:56Speaker 1: Lay Dying, the front man. This is a band, guys,
- 20:00Speaker 1: that would regularly pray with their fans after shows. Now he,
- 20:05Speaker 1: this front man, Tim Lambisa of As I Lay Dying,
- 20:07Speaker 1: admitted to being an atheist, and he claimed that the
- 20:10Speaker 1: majority of Christian metal bands that he toured with were
- 20:12Speaker 1: not actually Christian. What he said was that only 1
- 20:15Speaker 1: in 10 of the bands in the scene were actually
- 20:19Speaker 1: sincere about their faith, and that the rest were fake Christians. Now,
- 20:24Speaker 1: Tim Lambisa's band, As I Lay Dying, they weren't some
- 20:27Speaker 1: fringe act. They were nominated for a Grammy, they released
- 20:30Speaker 1: an album that charted in the top 10, and all
- 20:32Speaker 1: of that was because of their devoted fans, Christian fans
- 20:36Speaker 1: who believed in the band's faith-based message. But the story
- 20:40Speaker 1: of Tim Lambesis in As I Lay Dying, it's not
- 20:41Speaker 1: just about Christianity and whether or not people are charlatans,
- 20:45Speaker 1: it's about murder. Because in 2013, Lambesis was arrested after
- 20:50Speaker 1: paying an undercover cop disguised as a hitman to kill
- 20:55Speaker 1: his wife. Obviously not a very Christian thing to do.
- 20:58Speaker 1: We get into the story of Tim Lambesis in As
- 21:00Speaker 1: I Lay Dying and the whole Christian metal scene in
- 21:02Speaker 1: the new episode of Disgrace Land. So do not miss that.
- 21:04Speaker 1: That's coming on Tuesday. And when you're listening to this
- 21:08Speaker 1: As I Lay Dying episode, what I want to know
- 21:10Speaker 1: from you guys, what music do you listen to that
- 21:14Speaker 1: compels you to think about faith? I don't mean something
- 21:18Speaker 1: that's converted you to a religion. That's not what I'm saying.
- 21:21Speaker 1: I personally believe that the mystery of faith is something
- 21:24Speaker 1: to be contemplated. It's something to be confronted. Okay? And
- 21:29Speaker 1: a lot of music has done that for me. I
- 21:31Speaker 1: think about Dylan's Christian album, Slow Train of Coming. For
- 21:35Speaker 1: some reason, I think of Moby's play. That record always
- 21:38Speaker 1: kind of makes me think about my faith and think
- 21:40Speaker 1: about faith in general, I should say. I think about
- 21:45Speaker 1: gospel bluegrass music. I tend to listen to that a
- 21:48Speaker 1: lot on Sunday mornings. And it's all for this reason.
- 21:51Speaker 1: It's kind of propelling me in this direction to think
- 21:54Speaker 1: about faith. So what music does that for you? Is
- 21:58Speaker 1: it As I Lay Dying? I don't think so. It's
- 22:00Speaker 1: not for me anyways. But what music do you listen
- 22:03Speaker 1: to that has pushed you to confront faith, to think
- 22:06Speaker 1: about faith? And it's a little heavy, but I don't care. 617-906-6638,
- 22:09Speaker 1: voicemail and text. Get at me. We'll get into it.
- 22:14Speaker 1: You might hear yourself in next week's episode of the
- 22:17Speaker 1: Disgraceland After Party. You can always DM me at DisgracelandPod
- 22:20Speaker 1: on the socials as well. DisgracelandPod at gmail.com on email.
- 22:25Speaker 1: I'll be back right after this. with your answers to
- 22:27Speaker 1: last week's question of the week, your voicemails, texts, all
- 22:29Speaker 1: that stuff. Hang on. All right, guys, welcome back. Let's
- 22:44Speaker 1: get straight into your calls. 617-906-6638, voicemail and text. This
- 22:51Speaker 1: one comes from the 903 on the subject of Screamin'
- 22:54Speaker 1: Jay Hawkins.
- 22:55Speaker 2: Hey, Jake. Adam from Texas, now in Maryland. Excuse me,
- 22:59Speaker 2: Jay Hawkins. I can't help but remember you said that
- 23:03Speaker 2: he was addicted to codeine at one point. I can
- 23:07Speaker 2: block his bowels, too. So, obviously, he died of a
- 23:09Speaker 2: blocked bowel. I would guess the codeine addiction had something
- 23:12Speaker 2: to do with it more than anything. But, as you said,
- 23:15Speaker 2: we don't know because everybody you look, you hear a
- 23:17Speaker 2: different story. So, us in our current factory thing, what
- 23:23Speaker 2: we feel might be right. Must be right, of course,
- 23:26Speaker 2: in the way things go these days. Just my only
- 23:29Speaker 2: thought on that. Great episode, otherwise. Just insane on the
- 23:34Speaker 2: 54 kids. I don't even know what to say about that.
- 23:37Speaker 1: Anyway, love the episode. Love the show. Rock and roll up. Out. Adam,
- 23:43Speaker 1: thanks for the call, my man. Appreciate you. 54 kids,
- 23:45Speaker 1: 56 kids, 57 kids, 36 kids. Whatever it was, it
- 23:47Speaker 1: was a lot of kids. which is just crazy. And
- 23:53Speaker 1: I feel for those kids who hopefully some of them
- 23:55Speaker 1: found a dad elsewhere somehow. Yeah, the coding, intestinal blockage
- 24:02Speaker 1: as well. A lot of intestinal blockage talk over these
- 24:05Speaker 1: weeks in this Graceland. Who knows? Who knows how Jay died?
- 24:11Speaker 1: Wouldn't it be ironic if one of his kids did
- 24:12Speaker 1: him in? Let's go to Kelly in the 7-8 one. Hey, Jake.
- 24:18Speaker 3: This is Kelly from the 781. I have not called
- 24:21Speaker 3: in a while. I'm sorry.
- 24:22Speaker 1: I was just.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Re-listening to the Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love episodes again,
- 24:27Speaker 3: and I'm just calling about your question. Did Courtney Love
- 24:31Speaker 3: kill Kurt Cobain? And I think absolutely no. And I
- 24:36Speaker 3: am down for conspiracy. I think that, as they say
- 24:40Speaker 3: on another podcast I listen to, the difference between a
- 24:43Speaker 3: conspiracy and the truth is six months. And really, that's
- 24:47Speaker 3: how it's been lately with all the craziness. But no,
- 24:50Speaker 3: I have never thought that she killed him. I always
- 24:52Speaker 3: thought that was ludicrous. Why would she kill him, number one?
- 24:56Speaker 3: What did she gain from that? I mean, she had
- 24:58Speaker 3: her own money. She had whatever.
- 24:59Speaker 2: She loved him.
- 25:00Speaker 3: She did not kill him. I think that's ridiculous.
- 25:05Speaker 2: Macarola.
- 25:06Speaker 1: Kelly, the voice of reason. Appreciate you calling in. I'm
- 25:09Speaker 1: with you. I do not think Courtney Love. Obviously, we
- 25:12Speaker 1: talked about this earlier. I want to get into the specifics, though,
- 25:15Speaker 1: and I'm going to unpack this for the people who
- 25:17Speaker 1: do think so. 617-906-6638, voicemail and text. We can keep
- 25:22Speaker 1: talking about Courtney Love. We can talk about Jay Hawkins.
- 25:24Speaker 1: We can talk about anything you want to talk about.
- 25:27Speaker 1: 302 writes in, and 302 is very angry. Says, Jake,
- 25:30Speaker 1: my friend, if your question of the week isn't, are
- 25:32Speaker 1: you one of Screamin' Jay's kids, then we as a
- 25:36Speaker 1: disgraced land society don't deserve shit. I don't quite understand
- 25:41Speaker 1: what that means, 302, but a lot of passion there.
- 25:45Speaker 1: Are you one of Screamin' J's kids?
- 25:49Speaker 3: 617-906-6638.
- 25:49Speaker 1: Voicemail and text. Get back and let me know. 405
- 25:52Speaker 1: writes in, after a long hiatus that life often imposes
- 25:56Speaker 1: on us all, I have had a lot of catching
- 25:58Speaker 1: up to do. And while I'm late to the game,
- 26:01Speaker 1: I had an existential experience in listening to your piece
- 26:04Speaker 1: on Patti Smith. I listen to a lot of podcasts
- 26:07Speaker 1: and you always bring your A game, but your work
- 26:09Speaker 1: on Patti Smith took me to a place in my
- 26:11Speaker 1: mind in the universe that is only reserved when that
- 26:13Speaker 1: rare moment of clarity hits. You recently spoke of the
- 26:17Speaker 1: new mediums for good writers and your episode on Patti
- 26:19Speaker 1: Smith is up there with the great pieces. And wow,
- 26:22Speaker 1: thank you. In modern, that's me saying thank you. Goes
- 26:26Speaker 1: on to say, is up there with the great pieces
- 26:28Speaker 1: in modern pop culture literature in the New Yorker, Rolling Stone,
- 26:32Speaker 1: and those other magazine rack grabs that molded the youth
- 26:34Speaker 1: of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Don't stop writing. Rockarola,
- 26:38Speaker 1: the Notorious R.D.G. from the 405. Notorious R.D.G. Thank you
- 26:44Speaker 1: so much. Really cool of you to say. I appreciate that. Yeah,
- 26:50Speaker 1: that episode was nominated for a Signal Award. If you
- 26:54Speaker 1: guys want Disgraceland to win, as I do, because like
- 26:58Speaker 1: I said, once you get nominated for an award, it's
- 27:00Speaker 1: a double-edged sword. You don't want to lose. I hate
- 27:02Speaker 1: fucking losing. I don't like the concept of, oh, it's
- 27:05Speaker 1: just nice to be considered. Fuck that. I want to win.
- 27:09Speaker 1: So help me win. Help us win. Go to the website, SignalAward.com.
- 27:16Speaker 1: Big button right there. Click vote now. You can find
- 27:19Speaker 1: Disgraceland nominated for Best Writing and Best Music. Thank you,
- 27:24Speaker 1: Matt Bowden. Thank you, Sean Cahalan. Thank you, Ryan Spraker,
- 27:26Speaker 1: for all the amazing work you guys do on the
- 27:29Speaker 1: music for Disgraceland. And I like that you're being acknowledged
- 27:33Speaker 1: here as well as my writing. And thanks for the
- 27:36Speaker 1: kind words. I really appreciate it, RDG. That is, you know,
- 27:41Speaker 1: I'm humbled. I truly am. Helltown Mark from the 978
- 27:45Speaker 1: writes in, hey, didn't really expect to be adding a
- 27:48Speaker 1: blues song about constipation today, but here we are. And
- 27:52Speaker 1: there's a screenshot of Helltown Mark's phone where he's selecting
- 27:58Speaker 1: Constipation Blues and adding it to the Disgraceland Songs playlist. Mark,
- 28:02Speaker 1: do me a favor and call in and leave us
- 28:04Speaker 1: a voicemail. You're great on the text, but I want
- 28:07Speaker 1: a voicemail and I want you to explain to the
- 28:08Speaker 1: people what this is so that I can explain it
- 28:11Speaker 1: more fully. I'm getting hit up on Instagram. People are
- 28:13Speaker 1: asking about this playlist and I want to let them
- 28:15Speaker 1: know exactly what it is and where they can find it. Um, uh,
- 28:20Speaker 1: this is, uh, an ongoing thing. I get at least
- 28:23Speaker 1: one message per week. So call back 617-906-6638 voicemail and text.
- 28:28Speaker 1: 416 writes in on our Quincy Jones episode. Hey, great
- 28:34Speaker 1: Q episode. I really identified with what you said at
- 28:36Speaker 1: the beginning of the after party episode all throughout high school.
- 28:39Speaker 1: I was told you're going to become a writer. You're
- 28:41Speaker 1: going to write stuff. What did I do? I became
- 28:43Speaker 1: a clinical psychologist, researcher, and professor. Turns out I write
- 28:49Speaker 1: for a living. It started with the BA, the MA,
- 28:51Speaker 1: the PhD dissertation. When people say, oh, you're a psychologist,
- 28:55Speaker 1: what do you do? I reply, paperwork. I see my
- 28:57Speaker 1: job as trying to tell the client's story through these
- 28:59Speaker 1: very long reports, but I tell them that my job
- 29:02Speaker 1: is not to get it right. My job is to
- 29:03Speaker 1: get it right for them. Now, of course, people tell
- 29:05Speaker 1: me I should have a podcast because I love telling stories.
- 29:08Speaker 1: This is the way of the world now. This is
- 29:10Speaker 1: how you get your stories out. This is how you
- 29:12Speaker 1: speak your truth about life. Rock-a-rola. Well, Jason in the 416,
- 29:15Speaker 1: this is a Very interesting text. You sound highly educated
- 29:21Speaker 1: and I'm glad that you're getting your money's worth and
- 29:25Speaker 1: that you finally became a writer in a roundabout way,
- 29:29Speaker 1: just like I did. It's crazy how these things happen.
- 29:33Speaker 3: All right.
- 29:33Speaker 1: 617-906-6638. Voicemail and text. Get at me. Leave a voicemail.
- 29:36Speaker 1: I'll a text. Recommend some episodes. Give me your answers
- 29:43Speaker 1: to the question of the week. What music inspires you
- 29:47Speaker 1: to confront or contemplate your faith? I know it's heavy,
- 29:51Speaker 1: but who gives a shit? Let's get into it. We
- 29:53Speaker 1: know each other. We've known each other for a while.
- 29:56Speaker 1: It's been a while since I've been out there. And
- 30:01Speaker 1: I'm getting out there, getting out there in the new year.
- 30:05Speaker 1: It's going to happen. Get this cruise planned and we're
- 30:09Speaker 1: going to be staging a live version of Disgraceland. Haven't
- 30:14Speaker 1: done a live show in a while. We're going to
- 30:16Speaker 1: be doing it on a ship. Version voyages. Zeth and
- 30:21Speaker 1: I going to be taping, filming, perhaps a live episode
- 30:25Speaker 1: of the Disgraceland podcast and after party. And we need
- 30:30Speaker 1: you there. Okay. We're going to make this disco centric.
- 30:35Speaker 1: This cruise does not happen until March 20th, 2027. So
- 30:38Speaker 1: you got some time and this would make just a
- 30:40Speaker 1: fantastic Christmas present. Okay. For you and your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, whatever, buddy, pal.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I don't know. You're just Graceland fans. Just come on out.
- 30:51Speaker 1: And if you order now, if you book now, I
- 30:54Speaker 1: should say, you can score up to a thousand bucks
- 30:56Speaker 1: in savings, 70% off. 70% off your, what they're calling
- 31:03Speaker 1: second sailor. It sounds fun. Not as fun as the
- 31:06Speaker 1: first sailor. I imagine that means the person you're going
- 31:09Speaker 1: with gets 70% off and you get a $ 300 onboard
- 31:14Speaker 1: credit that I'm sure you can put towards all kinds
- 31:16Speaker 1: of stuff on the ship. Go to virginvoyages.com slash true
- 31:20Speaker 1: crime and grab your spot. This is going to sell out.
- 31:23Speaker 1: This is March 20th, 2027. We're sailing out of Miami.
- 31:28Speaker 1: And we're heading to Grand Turk. It's going to be
- 31:31Speaker 1: five nights. And it's not just going to be me.
- 31:34Speaker 1: It's going to be me and Zeth, like I said.
- 31:36Speaker 1: But it's also going to be the Buried Bones podcast.
- 31:38Speaker 1: That's an Exactly Right Network podcast. And it's going to
- 31:40Speaker 1: be Wisecrack. Wisecrack is the podcast of the year, last year.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Very big show. Again, Five Night Cruise begins March 20th, 2027.
- 31:51Speaker 1: There'll be all kinds of stuff going on besides the show.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I'm going to be hanging out. Zeth's going to be
- 31:56Speaker 1: hanging out. me all kinds of true crime themed happenings
- 32:00Speaker 1: on board, podcast recordings, behind the scenes sessions, meet and greets,
- 32:04Speaker 1: all that stuff. Again, you book now, you're going to
- 32:08Speaker 1: get $ 1, 000 in instant savings, 70% off your second sailor,
- 32:13Speaker 1: which is not your first mate, and up to $ 300
- 32:16Speaker 1: of on board credit. Okay. Go to www.virginvoyages.com slash true crime,
- 32:23Speaker 1: book your ticket, book passage as they say, pick out
- 32:28Speaker 1: a good Hawaiian shirt, and let's get into this. All right,
- 32:31Speaker 1: I will be back in a flash with your emails.
- 32:34Speaker 1: Don't go anywhere. All right, guys, disgracelandpod at gmail.com. Hit
- 32:50Speaker 1: me with your emails. This one comes from Neil Gillis.
- 32:52Speaker 1: Neil Gillis, the subject is ranking dread episode. Suggestion, ranking dread.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Story has everything. Sound system, clashes, political riots, fleeing multiple countries,
- 33:05Speaker 1: bringing the yards from Jamaica to the UK, Canada, and US.
- 33:09Speaker 1: And he made great music. Tell me Fatty Boom Boom
- 33:12Speaker 1: is not great music. Rock-a-rola. Ranking dread. Neil, I am.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Embarrassed to say, I don't know what the hell you're
- 33:20Speaker 1: talking about, but the passion in this email is such
- 33:22Speaker 1: that I'm going to note it and I'm going to
- 33:25Speaker 1: put this on the list. This is something that sounds
- 33:28Speaker 1: like it would allow us, I need a way into
- 33:31Speaker 1: Jamaican music that is not Bob Marley or Peter Tosh.
- 33:36Speaker 1: And this sounds like it might be it. And I'm
- 33:39Speaker 1: very interested. Robbie Thringwright saying, hey, Jake, it's your neighbor
- 33:43Speaker 1: in the upstairs apartment. Have you, what, what the fuck
- 33:46Speaker 1: are you talking about? Robbie goes on to say, have
- 33:48Speaker 1: you watched Last Stop yet? And no, it's not a
- 33:51Speaker 1: Western or an old TMC classic. Think more along the
- 33:54Speaker 1: lines of Tarantino. Just watch it. I guarantee you'll like it.
- 33:59Speaker 1: If you don't, I'll buy you a pint of moose
- 34:00Speaker 1: head next time you're in Toronto. Also, oh, I get
- 34:03Speaker 1: upstairs apartment. Now I get he's in Canada. Robbie, I
- 34:06Speaker 1: like how you did that. I like how you did that.
- 34:07Speaker 1: You didn't explain it. Robbie goes on to say, also
- 34:10Speaker 1: another point, I just discovered this band, the Silver Apples
- 34:12Speaker 1: from 1968. They sound like nothing from that era. They
- 34:16Speaker 1: were so far ahead of their time. It's incredible. They
- 34:18Speaker 1: were a synth rock band before there was synth. Anyhow,
- 34:21Speaker 1: check them out after you've watched The Last Stop. Cheers
- 34:23Speaker 1: from the 519 in Waterloo, Canada. Love these recommendations. You
- 34:27Speaker 1: guys are killing it this week. Robbie, great job. Silver Apples,
- 34:30Speaker 1: I've heard of them. Never checked them out, but I'm
- 34:33Speaker 1: excited to check them out and do that today, actually. 1968, huh?
- 34:38Speaker 1: Synth before there was synth. And The Last Stop. You
- 34:41Speaker 1: didn't give me much to go on here, but... I
- 34:44Speaker 1: don't know. There's something about the way you wrote this
- 34:46Speaker 1: that I feel like you're a guy I need to
- 34:47Speaker 1: pay attention to, Robbie. So I'm going to check out
- 34:50Speaker 1: the last stop. All right. At least I'm going to
- 34:52Speaker 1: talk to Zeth about it. See if he's got a take.
- 34:57Speaker 1: And then I'll dive in. Maybe. Perhaps. I think. Let's see.
- 35:01Speaker 1: In any event, I really appreciate the message. Disgracelandpod at gmail.com.
- 35:06Speaker 1: You guys want to hit us up about anything over email,
- 35:09Speaker 1: that's the way to do it. Heather the Yinzer on
- 35:11Speaker 1: Patreon writes, Hey, what happened to the old rock stars
- 35:15Speaker 1: with no fucks to give content? Well, I don't really know.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I'm reading this comment out of context, so it's hard
- 35:21Speaker 1: for me to tell Heather, but I'm going to look
- 35:22Speaker 1: into that. Pete on Patreon writes, Feast of the Mau
- 35:25Speaker 1: Mau makes I Put a Spell on You sound like
- 35:27Speaker 1: a Celine Dion jam. Feast of the Mau Mau is
- 35:31Speaker 1: a Screamin' Jay Hawkins song, for those of you who
- 35:34Speaker 1: are interested. Thank you, Pete. Tim on Patreon writes in, hey,
- 35:37Speaker 1: is it me or does this episode just sound different?
- 35:40Speaker 1: More natural, less bass or decibels or something. Sounds good,
- 35:44Speaker 1: just different.
- 35:46Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 35:47Speaker 1: Tim, maybe it's your settings or maybe Matt did something different. Matt,
- 35:51Speaker 1: did you do something different? Let us know. All right, guys,
- 35:54Speaker 1: it's October. We're nearing the end of the year. We
- 35:55Speaker 1: got to get together and figure out what episodes we
- 35:57Speaker 1: are going to produce for next year. This is talking
- 36:00Speaker 1: directly to the discos who are part of the Sound
- 36:03Speaker 1: and Fury community. membership in our All Access Club. We've
- 36:08Speaker 1: got a episode of this film we have to produce
- 36:13Speaker 1: next week. Perhaps we can hook something up for the
- 36:15Speaker 1: week after for a Zoom where we can all jump
- 36:19Speaker 1: on and you can bring your recommendations and we can
- 36:22Speaker 1: have a more of a sort of organized discussion about
- 36:25Speaker 1: what we want to produce for next year. We can
- 36:29Speaker 1: get into that more fully Zeth and I will have
- 36:32Speaker 1: some information in the Patreon in the coming days about
- 36:35Speaker 1: when we're going to do this. In the meantime, start
- 36:38Speaker 1: thinking about what episodes you want us to produce. Come
- 36:42Speaker 1: to this Zoom prepared. Just like Zeth Lundy comes to
- 36:46Speaker 1: the Hollywoodland feed every week prepared. He's talking to you
- 36:49Speaker 1: guys in the wrap party, as am I with our recommendations.
- 36:52Speaker 1: He's talking to you in the screening room, setting up
- 36:55Speaker 1: our watch for the weekend. And of course, we've got
- 36:57Speaker 1: our archive episode over there as well. Make sure you're
- 37:00Speaker 1: subscribed to Hollywoodland. Go to Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio app,
- 37:05Speaker 1: wherever you listen to podcasts. Search Hollywoodland and subscribe. Our
- 37:10Speaker 1: next episode on this film should be played loud. It's Halloween.
- 37:14Speaker 1: So we're going to be doing Shaun of the Dead,
- 37:16Speaker 1: which was a recommendation from a bunch of you guys
- 37:19Speaker 1: over on Patreon. Like I said, we're going to be
- 37:22Speaker 1: filming that next week, I believe. Yeah, next week, I think.
- 37:28Speaker 1: Coming up though, that's coming up end of the month.
- 37:31Speaker 1: You want in on all this all access action, you
- 37:33Speaker 1: got to go to disgracelandpod.com to sign up to become
- 37:35Speaker 1: an all access member. You're going to get this film
