- 0:01Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to this live edition of Fair Territory.
- 0:06Speaker 1: I am your host, Alana Rizzo, welcoming our guest, Jesse Rogers.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Of course you've seen him all over Major League Baseball,
- 0:13Speaker 1: primarily with ESPN and does a great job covering all
- 0:17Speaker 1: thirty teams. He's going to break down Game two of
- 0:19Speaker 1: the ALCS the beginning of the NLCS. Jesse, great to
- 0:23Speaker 1: be with you, But there is some breaking news out
- 0:26Speaker 1: of San Diego. It has been reported that Mike Schildt
- 0:29Speaker 1: has announced his retirement from managing the Padres. This is
- 0:33Speaker 1: per Kevin Ace of the San Diego Union. Tell me
- 0:36Speaker 1: more about what you know about this. It's interesting though,
- 0:39Speaker 1: the wording, my friend not retiring as a manager, but
- 0:43Speaker 1: retiring as manager of the Friars.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm not using the language like quitting or stepping away.
- 0:50Speaker 2: I mean retiring from the manager of the Padres is
- 0:53Speaker 2: curious wording. So have to figure that out. I actually
- 0:57Speaker 2: know Mike well, as a lot of people do, and
- 0:59Speaker 2: this one a surprise to me. So there's got to
- 1:01Speaker 2: be more to this story than just that statement. Right,
- 1:05Speaker 2: So we'll find out. This team came up short in
- 1:08Speaker 2: the playoffs, but they made the playoffs, had really good
- 1:11Speaker 2: back to back seasons under Mike Schildt. He's done a
- 1:14Speaker 2: good job there, but they didn't get past those first
- 1:17Speaker 2: couple rounds, so we'll have to see.
- 1:19Speaker 3: It's a bit surprising.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But in San Diego, you know, we had changes ever
- 1:24Speaker 2: in the win there with Aj Preller in charge, but
- 1:27Speaker 2: we really got to get to the bottom of what
- 1:29Speaker 2: that wording actually means, Alana. So I think it's really
- 1:33Speaker 2: a surprise to people around baseball. Look, there's a lot
- 1:35Speaker 2: of managerial jobs open, so there's you know, not that
- 1:40Speaker 2: many great managers out there. According to general managers, he
- 1:43Speaker 2: was at least a good one that had good seasons.
- 1:45Speaker 3: So this is a bit surprising. But there's got to
- 1:46Speaker 3: be more to this story.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Yeah, and you can read the story from Kevin ac
- 1:50Speaker 1: of the San Diego Union Tribune. He's the one that
- 1:52Speaker 1: broke the story, Jesse. And it's interesting though, because Mike
- 1:55Speaker 1: Schilt is walking away from a contract that has two
- 1:58Speaker 1: years remaining, citing a quote severe toll unquote the job
- 2:02Speaker 1: has taken on him quote mentally and physically. I mean,
- 2:05Speaker 1: people think, oh, San Diego a great place to live,
- 2:07Speaker 1: but with that expectation of a j Priller at the helmet.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Of course, with the recent passing of their former owner
- 2:14Speaker 1: Peter Sidler, you have to wonder if the expectation was
- 2:18Speaker 1: just too much. What's your take on the fact that
- 2:21Speaker 1: he's walking away citing mental and physical toll.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I just covered him in the playoffs in the first
- 2:27Speaker 2: round against the Cubs, and I was in on those
- 2:30Speaker 2: meetings because I was doing the sideline reporting, and yeah,
- 2:34Speaker 2: it's stressful. It's stressful, but he seemed to enjoy it.
- 2:38Speaker 2: But you never know what's going on in a person's personal life.
- 2:40Speaker 2: When it comes to this grind that these guys go on,
- 2:45Speaker 2: it takes a toll.
- 2:46Speaker 3: It absolutely takes a toll.
- 2:48Speaker 2: I was joking within a GM recently about you know,
- 2:53Speaker 2: being away from your wife during during the playoffs and mentioned,
- 2:57Speaker 2: you know, we were talking about the husband Hall of Fame,
- 2:59Speaker 2: and the response was, is any husband in the Hall
- 3:03Speaker 2: of fame? When it comes to baseball? Like, if you're
- 3:05Speaker 2: in the sport, it's tough, it's tough. So yeah, it's
- 3:10Speaker 2: it's it's a grind, and I guess we none of
- 3:13Speaker 2: us should be shocked if someone steps away from from
- 3:15Speaker 2: from the daily grind. As good as those jobs are
- 3:18Speaker 2: as much as he wanted to do it again after
- 3:20Speaker 2: what happened in Saint Louis.
- 3:22Speaker 3: I think anybody in the sport can relate to the
- 3:24Speaker 3: stress and the grind of it all.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm surprised most of us have not been dfaed.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Those that cover us cover this sport on a daily basis, Jesse.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Switching our focus now to the Alcs. Obviously, Game one
- 3:36Speaker 1: was last night. The Mariners take the win in Game
- 3:39Speaker 1: one against the Jayson Thank you just drew a blank there.
- 3:46Speaker 1: So obviously the Blue Jays looking to even things up tonight.
- 3:49Speaker 1: What was your biggest takeaway from Game one?
- 3:52Speaker 3: Oh, that's easy. The fact that the Mariners won.
- 3:56Speaker 2: I mean, come on, you're not supposed to win that
- 3:58Speaker 2: game fifteen innings, two nights before flying across the country there.
- 4:03Speaker 2: You're supposed to give that game away. You're supposed to
- 4:05Speaker 2: punt that game. They didn't do that, and it certainly
- 4:08Speaker 2: looked like they would in the first inning. Bryce Miller
- 4:10Speaker 2: settled down. He was the star of that game easily.
- 4:14Speaker 2: Of course cal Rawley did his thing. But the fact
- 4:16Speaker 2: that they just won that game is such a boost.
- 4:20Speaker 2: It's so obvious. I mean, Blue Jays need to win
- 4:22Speaker 2: today or you can pretty much call it because the
- 4:26Speaker 2: boost Seattle will get if they sweep there will be amazing.
- 4:30Speaker 3: So that's it to me, Just the fact that they.
- 4:32Speaker 2: Grinded out a win, just, you know, a little while
- 4:35Speaker 2: after celebrating the fifteen inning affair in the Alds amazing,
- 4:39Speaker 2: amazing stuff by Bryce Miller after giving up that leadoff
- 4:42Speaker 2: home run.
- 4:43Speaker 1: Honestly, Jesse, when Bryce Miller gave up the leadoff home
- 4:45Speaker 1: run to George Springer on the first pitch, I was like,
- 4:48Speaker 1: oh jeez, that obviously didn't take long. But you're like,
- 4:50Speaker 1: here you go for the Mariners, their woes, and then
- 4:53Speaker 1: they lose Lucas and the you know, the first app
- 4:55Speaker 1: bat there looks like he's going to be okay, right,
- 4:58Speaker 1: neat contusion as far as that concerned. What's the most
- 5:01Speaker 1: impressive thing about the Mariners coming back and winning that game.
- 5:05Speaker 1: I know you talked about the fatigue from the fifteen
- 5:07Speaker 1: inning game prior, but just it seems like this has
- 5:10Speaker 1: been a resilient bunch. I know we throw that word
- 5:13Speaker 1: around a lot, but what's the most impressive thing?
- 5:16Speaker 2: Well, the fact that they did it and I think
- 5:18Speaker 2: one hundred pitches after Bryce Miller threw twenty seven in
- 5:21Speaker 2: the first inning, they just mowed him down after that.
- 5:24Speaker 2: This was a Blue Jays offense that was on fire
- 5:27Speaker 2: against the Yankees, on fire in the second half of
- 5:29Speaker 2: this season, and it just kind of disappeared after that
- 5:33Speaker 2: Springer homer. It just goes to show you and never
- 5:35Speaker 2: known baseball, but to finish throwing one hundred pitches after
- 5:40Speaker 2: twenty seven came in that first inning with a pitching
- 5:43Speaker 2: staff that was, you know, by definition tired after fifteen
- 5:47Speaker 2: innings and five games against the Tigers.
- 5:49Speaker 3: I thought that was the most amazing thing.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And then most of the credit goes to Bryce Miller,
- 5:55Speaker 2: but also the relief corps that finished off that game
- 5:58Speaker 2: as well.
- 5:58Speaker 3: So many stolen.
- 6:01Speaker 2: Right out from underneath the Toronto Blue Jays who got
- 6:05Speaker 2: off to that great start with the Springer homer, but
- 6:07Speaker 2: just could not muster anything after that.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Yeah, after that first inning with Nathan Lukes and Bryce
- 6:11Speaker 1: Milliger thinking oh, no, here we go, but the Mariners
- 6:14Speaker 1: getting the job done?
- 6:16Speaker 3: Are you?
- 6:16Speaker 1: Does the fact that John Snyder took Kevin Gossman out
- 6:19Speaker 1: when he did, does that give you any sort of pause?
- 6:21Speaker 1: What was your take on that?
- 6:24Speaker 3: It doesn't. It doesn't. And look, it's so interesting.
- 6:27Speaker 2: A lot of managers during the regular season are being
- 6:31Speaker 2: reactive most of the time. In the postseason, they have
- 6:35Speaker 2: to be proactive by definition. These are short series, especially
- 6:39Speaker 2: the best of three and best of five, best of seven.
- 6:41Speaker 2: Little different, maybe a little different, but you have to
- 6:44Speaker 2: make the move before your pitcher gets into deep trouble,
- 6:48Speaker 2: before he gives up runs, or in the regular season
- 6:50Speaker 2: you can react to it. It's just a different animal.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And look, he gave up the home run, he gave.
- 6:57Speaker 3: Up a walk.
- 6:57Speaker 2: The walk after the home run is telling to me.
- 7:01Speaker 2: The pitch to Raleigh was you know, it wasn't the
- 7:03Speaker 2: best split. So so again, is he tiring a little bit?
- 7:07Speaker 3: The walk? I get it. I totally get it. Now.
- 7:10Speaker 2: The reliever after him didn't didn't perform, and you're gonna
- 7:13Speaker 2: second guess. But I understand being proactive. The first sign
- 7:17Speaker 2: of trouble by your start when he gets to the
- 7:20Speaker 2: fifth or sixth inning. These days, managers are going to
- 7:23Speaker 2: make the move. And you understand why. There's there's no
- 7:26Speaker 2: tomorrow essentially, even though there's a few games left, like
- 7:29Speaker 2: every game is so important, so I don't have a
- 7:31Speaker 2: problem with it. Maybe in another scenario I will have
- 7:34Speaker 2: a problem with it. But the walk after the home
- 7:36Speaker 2: run is what's telling to me. One pitch is one thing,
- 7:41Speaker 2: but then when you give up a free pass right
- 7:43Speaker 2: after that, that's that's to me that Okay, let's be
- 7:46Speaker 2: proactive about this, not reactive.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Yeah, quick hooks in the postseason, I understand exactly what
- 7:51Speaker 1: you're saying. Focusing now on the NLCS Jesse Rodgers, the Brewers,
- 7:57Speaker 1: of course, the host against the reigning champion Dodgers. This
- 8:01Speaker 1: is a Brewers team Jesse that's been unbelievable all season long,
- 8:04Speaker 1: best record in baseball. They've dominated the National League wire
- 8:07Speaker 1: to wire essentially, and they had the season series sweep
- 8:11Speaker 1: against the Dodgers in the regular season. Does that trickle
- 8:15Speaker 1: its way into the postseason six and oher in the
- 8:17Speaker 1: regular year?
- 8:19Speaker 2: Absolutely not. It has nothing to do with it. The
- 8:22Speaker 2: Dodgers were banged up, some of their pitchers weren't even
- 8:25Speaker 2: on the roster at the time. The only thing it
- 8:27Speaker 2: might do is give some Brewers hitters some confidence against
- 8:31Speaker 2: some pitchers they faced already, or maybe as a team
- 8:34Speaker 2: you feel confident because you beat them a few times
- 8:36Speaker 2: in the regular season.
- 8:37Speaker 3: But honestly, it means nothing.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I covered the Cubs and Mets in twenty fifteen. The
- 8:43Speaker 2: Cubs went seven in oh in the regular season against
- 8:46Speaker 2: the Mets, and then in the postseason they lost four nothing.
- 8:49Speaker 3: It really doesn't matter now.
- 8:51Speaker 2: It helped them win the season series and then the
- 8:56Speaker 2: best record in baseball because of they went six to
- 8:59Speaker 2: zero against the Dodgers, gave them home field advantage.
- 9:01Speaker 3: So it wasn't meaningful at the time, But in.
- 9:03Speaker 2: Terms of a carryover effect, a lot of it really
- 9:06Speaker 2: has nothing to do with it.
- 9:07Speaker 1: And the Dodgers get Blake Snell in Game one, Yoshinobu
- 9:10Speaker 1: Yamamoto in Game two. I feel, Jesse that this is
- 9:13Speaker 1: the first time all season and it's the most important
- 9:16Speaker 1: time that the Dodgers starting staff has been all together
- 9:19Speaker 1: and all healthy. How much does that factor into the
- 9:22Speaker 1: championship series.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of wild.
- 9:24Speaker 2: If you go back to early in the season, the
- 9:26Speaker 2: Dodgers had no starting pitching but plenty in the bullpen
- 9:30Speaker 2: before those guys kind of faltered and got hurt. The Brewers,
- 9:33Speaker 2: especially when they got healthy, had a ton in the
- 9:36Speaker 2: starting staff when they included Priest and Woodriff came back,
- 9:39Speaker 2: but now they're a little thin there, but have this
- 9:42Speaker 2: great bullpen. It's reversed itself. And the fact that they
- 9:46Speaker 2: can just pitch Otani one start back in La don't
- 9:50Speaker 2: need him to, you know, stretch him as a starter
- 9:53Speaker 2: or reliever and try to do crazy things with him,
- 9:56Speaker 2: is telling to me, just give him his one start
- 9:59Speaker 2: and let him hit the rest of the series because
- 10:00Speaker 2: they have enough now with klas Now Andy, I'm a Moto.
- 10:03Speaker 3: And Snow so yeah.
- 10:05Speaker 2: I find it fascinating that the Borer's strength is their pen,
- 10:09Speaker 2: the Dodger strength as their starting staff and let's see,
- 10:12Speaker 2: you know, let the best man win, depending on how
- 10:15Speaker 2: that all works out. But it's it's gonna be a
- 10:16Speaker 2: tough task for those Burers hitters against the Dodger staff
- 10:19Speaker 2: coming together.
- 10:20Speaker 1: Joe Hey, O'tani not starting in at least the first
- 10:23Speaker 1: two games, and there's been a bit of an offensive
- 10:25Speaker 1: slump for the greatest guy in the game, Jesse Rodgers,
- 10:28Speaker 1: When you're talking about Otani, does that make you scratch
- 10:31Speaker 1: your head a little bit? What are you seeing in
- 10:33Speaker 1: his at bats? Should Dodgers fans be concerned?
- 10:37Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 10:38Speaker 2: Look, there's a lot of guys through four or six
- 10:41Speaker 2: or eight postseason games that struggle.
- 10:43Speaker 3: Not a lot of rhyme or reason to it.
- 10:45Speaker 2: I guess if you added up ten octobers in a
- 10:48Speaker 2: row for a guy, you know, that's a sample size. Sure,
- 10:51Speaker 2: but my feeling, and I guarantee you this is what
- 10:54Speaker 2: the Brewers are feeling. Okay, he was slumping, then we're
- 10:58Speaker 2: in trouble now.
- 10:59Speaker 3: You know.
- 10:59Speaker 2: It's kind of like that guy that has a bad
- 11:01Speaker 2: string training watch out and the con versus true. If
- 11:05Speaker 2: you're great in March, you're usually bad in April. So
- 11:07Speaker 2: I think that's the only way to look at this.
- 11:09Speaker 2: I picked him for the MVP of the series simply
- 11:12Speaker 2: because he did slump. How long is he going to slump?
- 11:15Speaker 2: It's probably not going to be for two more series
- 11:17Speaker 2: or even one more, so I don't see anything in
- 11:20Speaker 2: his bats inherently that would cause that much concern. But
- 11:25Speaker 2: let's see one more series and then you might say, well, wow,
- 11:28Speaker 2: this is an extended slump. So I think he comes
- 11:30Speaker 2: out of it. I don't know if it's tonight, but
- 11:33Speaker 2: certainly in this series.
- 11:34Speaker 1: Yeah, he's a hard man to keep down for long.
- 11:37Speaker 1: His countrymen and teammate Roki Sasaki. Jesse is this man
- 11:41Speaker 1: at the closer that the Dodgers fans didn't know they needed.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I swear he was gone for six months. Nobody knew
- 11:47Speaker 1: where he was. That two pitch pitcher has come up
- 11:50Speaker 1: big and has paid huge dividends in the pen. What
- 11:53Speaker 1: do you make of it?
- 11:54Speaker 2: Yeah, that's what you love about baseball, right, you never know?
- 11:57Speaker 2: They signed Tanner Scott, they signed Kirby, spend so much
- 12:01Speaker 2: money and it's this rookie, young rookie rookie Sasaki who
- 12:05Speaker 2: is supposed to be a starter that's in there. And
- 12:07Speaker 2: I know that they do not want to pitch a
- 12:09Speaker 2: multiple innings.
- 12:11Speaker 3: Like they had to the other day.
- 12:13Speaker 2: I think they really just want one inning and save
- 12:17Speaker 2: the arm, be careful with it and all that stuff.
- 12:20Speaker 3: Amazing.
- 12:20Speaker 2: I mean, that's what two pitch pitchers really are meant for,
- 12:23Speaker 2: is the bullpen and maybe even closing. But obviously he's
- 12:27Speaker 2: good enough and to start in the major leagues and
- 12:29Speaker 2: he'll develop as a starter. But I think it's a
- 12:33Speaker 2: brilliant idea. I mean, I think it's a brilliant idea.
- 12:35Speaker 2: It wasn't really stretched out. Let's put him in the
- 12:38Speaker 2: back end. We don't have anybody back there right now,
- 12:41Speaker 2: and let's rock and roll. He's still an unknown in
- 12:43Speaker 2: this league. That stuff is so new. Hitters are having
- 12:47Speaker 2: a tough time picking up, And you know, I was
- 12:49Speaker 2: talking to a veteran who said, yeah, sometimes playoff experience
- 12:53Speaker 2: is great, but there's also the other side of the coin,
- 12:55Speaker 2: when you're kind of young and dumb, that's fun too.
- 12:57Speaker 2: You don't know any better, and I don't think Sasaki
- 13:00Speaker 2: knows the ninth inning is supposed to be that difficult.
- 13:02Speaker 3: So I love the move. It's pretty cool.
- 13:05Speaker 1: What to start. Contrasts from the time in which he
- 13:07Speaker 1: was in the Dodgers dugout crying after a bad outing
- 13:10Speaker 1: and being really emotional to striking out j t rail
- 13:12Speaker 1: Muto to move on, Jesse, Let's brag on the Brewers
- 13:15Speaker 1: a little bit. The average joes they are not. What
- 13:19Speaker 1: is the role of Jacob Mazerowski in the cs oh.
- 13:23Speaker 3: I mean, he's going to get a ton of innings.
- 13:24Speaker 2: Whether he starts in the first inning or comes in
- 13:27Speaker 2: in the second remains to be seen. Not a big difference, right,
- 13:30Speaker 2: He's going to pitch four to five innings each time out,
- 13:34Speaker 2: and that's the deal. Just depends on the setup, if
- 13:36Speaker 2: they want him to avoid Otani in the first inning
- 13:38Speaker 2: or whatnot.
- 13:39Speaker 3: But boy, that's an electric arm and he's able to
- 13:42Speaker 3: harness it.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I think it's no coincidence that his two postseason appearances
- 13:47Speaker 2: both came at home, and I think they'd like to
- 13:51Speaker 2: use most of his bulk innings at home if possible.
- 13:53Speaker 2: I'm not saying they won't use him on the road,
- 13:55Speaker 2: but I could understand him being avoided at Wrigley Field.
- 13:59Speaker 2: So I think tonight is a good opportunity, or I
- 14:04Speaker 2: should say, in the next couple of days. But it
- 14:07Speaker 2: doesn't mean he won't pitch in LA I just think
- 14:09Speaker 2: he's more comfortable at home. Sort of harness that and
- 14:12Speaker 2: use the crowd to his advantage. But he'll start or
- 14:15Speaker 2: get some bulke innings in one of these early games
- 14:17Speaker 2: and they'll go from there. But what an arm, what
- 14:20Speaker 2: a talent, and if he could continue to harness it.
- 14:22Speaker 2: You know, his last outing against the Cubs, first time
- 14:25Speaker 2: in seventeen appearances, he did not issue a walk.
- 14:29Speaker 3: I mean this was four hintings too. It wasn't just
- 14:31Speaker 3: a onedning stint.
- 14:32Speaker 2: So I mean, if he's not issuing walks and he's
- 14:34Speaker 2: dotting at one hundred.
- 14:35Speaker 3: Watch out at guy's a weapon.
- 14:37Speaker 1: Yeah, twenty twenty five All Star the Miz. We'll see
- 14:40Speaker 1: him come up big, hopefully for the Brewers in this series.
- 14:44Speaker 1: Coming up here on Fair Territory with Jesse Rogers today,
- 14:47Speaker 1: our special guest Ken Rosenthal is honestlim but we're going
- 14:50Speaker 1: to go with Jesse talking about the Cubs, the inside dish,
- 14:54Speaker 1: what went wrong, and what does their offseason look like.
- 14:57Speaker 3: We'll be right back, b.
- 14:59Speaker 4: We both love Omaha Steaks. My latest order six private

- 15:18Speaker 4: You have been a long time Omaha Steaks guy too.
- 15:21Speaker 3: Yeah. Back in college, I would always order steaks. I'd
- 15:24Speaker 3: put them in my freezer.
- 15:25Speaker 2: And that's the reason I bulked up is because I
- 15:28Speaker 2: always had fresh steaks in my freezer, ready to.

- 16:07Speaker 1: Time now for Inside Dish with Jesse Rogers. And I know, Jesse,
- 16:10Speaker 1: you cover all thirty teams for ESPN, but you spend
- 16:13Speaker 1: a lot of times, a lot of time covering the
- 16:16Speaker 1: Cubs and the White Sox in your home base of Chicago.
- 16:19Speaker 1: What went wrong with the Cubs in terms of the postseason,
- 16:24Speaker 1: if you will, And what does their offseason look like
- 16:26Speaker 1: in your estimation?
- 16:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's kind of interesting a lot.
- 16:29Speaker 2: I actually think they reached their ceiling, like winning a
- 16:32Speaker 2: playoff series, getting to Game five and losing on the road.
- 16:36Speaker 2: And I do think even though five of their nine
- 16:40Speaker 2: regular hitters hit under two hundred in the postseason, like
- 16:43Speaker 2: that's gonna happen. You're gonna have your good moments and
- 16:45Speaker 2: bad moments. Offensively, it was a good offense it. It
- 16:49Speaker 2: was a great offense early and then just not as
- 16:51Speaker 2: great second half, but in general, it is what it
- 16:54Speaker 2: is offensively.
- 16:56Speaker 3: I actually think they were short.
- 16:57Speaker 2: On the mountain and they didn't prepare for this at
- 16:59Speaker 2: the trade deadline in particular, and maybe even going back
- 17:03Speaker 2: to last offseason. Now, you can't manage every injury like
- 17:07Speaker 2: Justin Steele went down early. You can't use that excuse
- 17:10Speaker 2: in the postseason. But they did lose Kate Horton very late,
- 17:15Speaker 2: and you can't overcome that necessarily. So they they were
- 17:18Speaker 2: down one guy, but they're also a little bit thin.
- 17:22Speaker 2: And the bigger story is their bullpen was pieced together
- 17:27Speaker 2: and it did well. But they had one pitcher who
- 17:31Speaker 2: really can strike guys out at one hundred, and that's
- 17:33Speaker 2: Daniel Palencia and he's still harnessing his talent. They had
- 17:36Speaker 2: a second pitcher who is a spring invitee who could
- 17:39Speaker 2: pop at ninety six ninety seven and Brad Keller, and
- 17:42Speaker 2: he did well.
- 17:43Speaker 3: But they didn't fortify, for.
- 17:45Speaker 2: Example, at the deadline like some of these other teams did.
- 17:48Speaker 2: Duran changed hands and I don't even care if these
- 17:51Speaker 2: all these players did well or not. Hellesley and Bednar
- 17:54Speaker 2: and Duran and you know Finn Again, it doesn't matter
- 17:57Speaker 2: that they should have done more if they thought about
- 18:00Speaker 2: winning four rounds of the postseason.
- 18:03Speaker 3: So I feel like they hit their ceiling. But it
- 18:06Speaker 3: was a good year.
- 18:07Speaker 2: I'm not sure what they can do to sort of
- 18:10Speaker 2: go from ninety two wins to ninety seven or ninety eight,
- 18:12Speaker 2: but I do think they can maintain the team.
- 18:15Speaker 3: That they have here. I think they need to do
- 18:17Speaker 3: more on the mound.
- 18:18Speaker 2: Their position player group is basically set barring what you know.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Forget Kyle Tucker for a moment, because that's a big
- 18:26Speaker 2: what if in right field, But other than that, they've
- 18:28Speaker 2: got a decent group and a couple of young players
- 18:31Speaker 2: knocked on the door to come up. But I don't
- 18:33Speaker 2: think things went wrong. I just think they hit their
- 18:36Speaker 2: ceiling and didn't have home field advantage.
- 18:43Speaker 1: There we go, Jesse. I think I lost you there
- 18:45Speaker 1: for a second, but I think I have you back.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Let me ask you this about Kyle Tucker. Is Kyle
- 18:50Speaker 1: Tucker in a Cub's uniform next season as he enters
- 18:54Speaker 1: into free agency this year?
- 18:56Speaker 3: I don't think so.
- 18:57Speaker 2: I think when you get to this point and he
- 19:00Speaker 2: hasn't already re signed. I think there's a tendency that
- 19:04Speaker 2: they move on now. Once in a while, a player
- 19:07Speaker 2: might go out and get an offer and bring it
- 19:09Speaker 2: back to his team. I don't see the Cubs operating
- 19:12Speaker 2: like that. You know, the Cubs are kind of stuck
- 19:15Speaker 2: in the middle. They don't spend like the Dodgers or Mets,
- 19:19Speaker 2: but they certainly spend more than a lot of teams,
- 19:21Speaker 2: and more than even their their rivals in the Central Division.
- 19:24Speaker 2: But it's not unlimited, and I think if there was
- 19:28Speaker 2: a deal to be had, it would have been earlier
- 19:30Speaker 2: after they traded for him, like we saw Lynn Door
- 19:32Speaker 2: do with the Mets or Matt Olsen with the Braves.
- 19:35Speaker 2: So I think the writings a little bit on the wall.
- 19:37Speaker 2: Not impossible, especially if he wanted a short term deal.
- 19:41Speaker 2: If he accepted the qualifying offer, all very doubtful. Most
- 19:44Speaker 2: free agents want the security once they get there. You know,
- 19:47Speaker 2: he had a couple of injuries in the second half.
- 19:49Speaker 2: I don't think the Cubs want to tie up thirty
- 19:51Speaker 2: five or forty million in one player, especially one year
- 19:54Speaker 2: before a new labor deal. They have one of their
- 19:56Speaker 2: top prospects knocking on the door in right field, Owen
- 19:59Speaker 2: Casey he could take over for Tucker. They still have, say,
- 20:01Speaker 2: it's a Zookie under contract who played decently in the
- 20:04Speaker 2: outfield out there. So I think there's a bunch of
- 20:06Speaker 2: reasons that are piling up, but mostly because we're already
- 20:10Speaker 2: here the offseason and he hasn't re signed. Why would
- 20:14Speaker 2: the Cubs engage with him after he can engage with
- 20:17Speaker 2: twenty nine other teams. Doesn't make much business sense on
- 20:20Speaker 2: the Cubs part. And I just feel like Tucker's going
- 20:23Speaker 2: to get a better offer elsewhere.
- 20:25Speaker 1: Yeah, very likely the one year that he was with
- 20:27Speaker 1: the Chicago Cubs. Ironically too, the Houston Astros not making
- 20:31Speaker 1: the postseason this year for the first time in a
- 20:33Speaker 1: long time. All Right, coming up on fair territory with
- 20:36Speaker 1: Jesse Rogers today, we're gonna ask Jesse some questions. So
- 20:40Speaker 1: get those questions in for him because we are going
- 20:43Speaker 1: to grill him next.

- 21:52Speaker 3: Only.
- 21:52Speaker 1: Jesse Rogers would show up to a barbecue in a
- 21:55Speaker 1: suit and time now to grill you, Jesse. The first
- 21:59Speaker 1: question is in regards to Justin Steel. Ryan wants to
- 22:03Speaker 1: know is he supposed to be ready by spring? What's
- 22:06Speaker 1: the big picture outlook for Justin?
- 22:09Speaker 2: I don't think he'll be ready to take regular turns
- 22:12Speaker 2: in the rotation by spring, but certainly early in the season,
- 22:15Speaker 2: maybe May, if I'm remembering it correctly, So he'll be
- 22:19Speaker 2: a little bit behind everybody else, but not too far.
- 22:23Speaker 2: And I think you can you can hope to consider
- 22:26Speaker 2: him as a major contributor in twenty twenty six, even
- 22:28Speaker 2: if it is in April.
- 22:29Speaker 1: First, Okay, all division winners Jesse Rodgers are advancing, of course, Toronto, Milwaukee, Seattle,
- 22:37Speaker 1: and Los Angeles. I would want you to rank the
- 22:40Speaker 1: home atmospheres of the four remaining teams standing. Let's start
- 22:46Speaker 1: with the American leg. Let's start with Toronto.
- 22:50Speaker 3: I would put it at a six and a half.
- 22:53Speaker 3: It's pretty good.
- 22:55Speaker 2: They're nice in Canada, though they're not gonna be springing
- 22:58Speaker 2: the opponent's game like the regally crowd was with Freddy Peralta.
- 23:02Speaker 3: But it can get rockets for sure up there. Maybe
- 23:04Speaker 3: maybe more than six and a half.
- 23:05Speaker 2: I gotta be honest, I haven't been to a game
- 23:07Speaker 2: in Toronto in a few years, so I shouldn't downgrade it.
- 23:10Speaker 3: But it's pretty darn good. I'll put it that way,
- 23:13Speaker 3: all right.
- 23:13Speaker 1: They're gonna have the roof open tonight. I wonder if
- 23:15Speaker 1: that makes any sort of difference in terms of that outcome.
- 23:20Speaker 1: What about Seattle? Obviously Seattle, We're going to get to
- 23:22Speaker 1: Rob's question in just a second. Seattle, right ranks Seattle
- 23:26Speaker 1: than LA, than Milwaukee.
- 23:29Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean Seattle is probably one among those three.
- 23:32Speaker 2: I mean, it's been just crazy there and it will
- 23:34Speaker 2: only take another take it to another level in the ALCS.
- 23:39Speaker 2: I mean, you know, the Dodger fans, it can be
- 23:42Speaker 2: very good, it can be very good. But I will
- 23:44Speaker 2: say the Brewer fans reacted, I think, to what was
- 23:46Speaker 2: going on at really and brought it in Game five.
- 23:50Speaker 2: I put the Brewers and Dodgers similar. Dome open, don't close.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Can make a difference, certainly, but I think I think
- 23:56Speaker 2: most people would say Dodger Stadium can get going, and
- 23:59Speaker 2: and fam Field as well. But I'd put safeg above them.
- 24:03Speaker 2: I'd put what happens in Seattle above those two.
- 24:06Speaker 1: All right, it's gonna be interesting to see. I think
- 24:08Speaker 1: the Citizens Bank fans the most difficult place to go
- 24:12Speaker 1: into and play. Unfortunately, the Phillies have been kicked out.
- 24:17Speaker 1: All right, We're gonna have much more questions after this,
- 24:19Speaker 1: but one really quick one from rob What do you
- 24:21Speaker 1: think about the tactic of turning starters into relievers in
- 24:23Speaker 1: the postseason? Will we see more of this in the
- 24:26Speaker 1: coming years. We have about sixty seconds to answer this
- 24:28Speaker 1: one easy.
- 24:30Speaker 3: The answer is yes.
- 24:31Speaker 2: I mean unless you somehow have for healthy, ready to
- 24:34Speaker 2: go starters like the Dodgers have, only because they slow
- 24:38Speaker 2: played them. Even Doc Roberts said yesterday, Yeah, we could
- 24:40Speaker 2: have pitched Blake Snell earlier in the year, but we didn't.
- 24:43Speaker 3: So the Dodgers are one thing.
- 24:45Speaker 2: I think you're gonna see openers and folk innings and
- 24:48Speaker 2: just trying to get twenty seven outs. Hopefully the agents
- 24:52Speaker 2: catch up with it and say, hey, my guys pitching
- 24:55Speaker 2: inning two through four, pay him in the playoffs, you know,
- 24:58Speaker 2: for what he does in the playoffs. Oh, I think yes.
- 25:01Speaker 2: The answers we're going to see more weird permutations of
- 25:04Speaker 2: how pitchers are used in the postseason unless you simply
- 25:08Speaker 2: have four decent starters ready to rock and roll, and
- 25:11Speaker 2: very few teams do.
- 25:12Speaker 1: Hey, for those of you still with us, we're glad
- 25:14Speaker 1: that you are still here. A couple of more questions
- 25:16Speaker 1: for Jesse Rodgers. This is a fair question. Jesse I
- 25:20Speaker 1: wonder this too. Robert just has a simple one David Ross.
- 25:23Speaker 1: I don't know if that means for San Diego or
- 25:26Speaker 1: another open managerial spot. What do you think?
- 25:29Speaker 2: It's funny because I do think he'd be a decent
- 25:31Speaker 2: fit in San Diego. I mean, the sort of theme
- 25:33Speaker 2: around Ross would be put him with a veteran club
- 25:36Speaker 2: or one that's ready to win more than a rebuilding one,
- 25:39Speaker 2: just for obvious reasons. He's kind of that grizzled you know,
- 25:42Speaker 2: Grandpa Ross, right, But I think he learned a lot
- 25:47Speaker 2: in his first gig. There's a ton of openings. He's
- 25:50Speaker 2: going to end up somewhere. I wouldn't doubt that Preller
- 25:53Speaker 2: will interview him. I don't doubt that the thinking, the
- 25:57Speaker 2: common thinking is Baltimore, Atlanta for sure, and now why
- 26:01Speaker 2: not throw San Diego into the mix. So I think
- 26:04Speaker 2: Ross is the right guy at the right time in
- 26:07Speaker 2: a lot of ways, like being out of the game
- 26:09Speaker 2: and you know, coming back into it with so many
- 26:11Speaker 2: openings I think, and he didn't leave.
- 26:13Speaker 3: In it with a bad reputation at all.
- 26:15Speaker 2: So I do think he gets one of these gigs,
- 26:17Speaker 2: and San Diego would be intriguing for sure.
- 26:20Speaker 1: Let me ask you a quick question about Manny Ramier
- 26:24Speaker 1: or Manny Ramirez, Manny Manchado. Do you think that there's
- 26:26Speaker 1: a Bucks Show Walter Manny Machado reunion in San Diego.
- 26:30Speaker 1: We'll see what happens in San Diego. A lot of
- 26:33Speaker 1: managerial openings for all of you watching. We're gonna still
- 26:38Speaker 1: wait and see if Jesse Rogers comes back. Put some
- 26:40Speaker 1: questions in the chat here. I'll see if I can
- 26:42Speaker 1: answer any of these for you guys. It says it's over,
- 26:46Speaker 1: says the Orioles and Rays will bounce back, while either
- 26:49Speaker 1: the Yankees or Red Slacks will fall back and end
- 26:51Speaker 1: up in last place. It's an interesting take in terms
- 26:54Speaker 1: of it's over. Who were the free Phillies free agents
- 26:56Speaker 1: next year? A lot Johnny Owen, Kyle Schwarber obviously the biggest,
- 27:01Speaker 1: Probably free agents, Ranger Suarez the free agents of course,
- 27:05Speaker 1: with the Philadelphia Phillies. Let's see, imagine if the Mets
- 27:09Speaker 1: get Kyle and the Phillies get Pete Alonzo. How funny
- 27:11Speaker 1: will that be? It would be that would certainly shake
- 27:14Speaker 1: up the NL East, if you will, Who else do
- 27:18Speaker 1: we have in the chat here? As we wait for
- 27:20Speaker 1: Jesse to come back on, Johnny Owen, Why would anyone
- 27:24Speaker 1: want to manage the Padres? Aj Preller just trades the
- 27:28Speaker 1: farm every deadline. That's not necessarily true, Johnny, because one
- 27:31Speaker 1: thing that aj Preller does is he spends money, and he,
- 27:34Speaker 1: much like Jerry Depoto in Seattle, is willing to make moves.
- 27:38Speaker 1: I mean, you can't fault the front office and the
- 27:40Speaker 1: ownership group for what they were able to do with
- 27:42Speaker 1: the San Diego Potters. They brought in a tremendous amount
- 27:45Speaker 1: of talent Allah Mason Miller to fortify what was already
- 27:49Speaker 1: a ridiculously good bullpen. I mean, San Diego is a
- 27:52Speaker 1: winnable team. This is a team that obviously spends money.
- 27:55Speaker 1: They can certainly compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers in
- 27:59Speaker 1: the n L West. I think San Diego is a
- 28:01Speaker 1: very desirable place to manage. A lot of it depends,
- 28:05Speaker 1: perhaps on the culture Jesse, and I don't know. I
- 28:06Speaker 1: was answering a question, welcome back, my friend, Johnny. No
- 28:11Speaker 1: one asked, No, it's okay. Why would anybody Johnny wants
- 28:13Speaker 1: to know, why would anybody want to manage the Padres?
- 28:16Speaker 1: I think it's a desirable place. It just you know,
- 28:18Speaker 1: you have that's a team that spends money. I mean,
- 28:21Speaker 1: why why should why should managers want to go to
- 28:24Speaker 1: San Diego?
- 28:26Speaker 2: Well, first of all, it's one of thirty great jobs
- 28:30Speaker 2: that we have in this industry. It is San Diego,
- 28:33Speaker 2: nice place to live. They are trying to compete. Now
- 28:36Speaker 2: we'll see if they're going to continue to spend money.
- 28:39Speaker 2: But look, plenty have teams that don't spend money compete
- 28:42Speaker 2: as well. It's tough to be in the division with
- 28:43Speaker 2: the Dodgers, but that's why you have three wildcards. You
- 28:46Speaker 2: got to win on the margins. If you're not going
- 28:48Speaker 2: to spend, you got to develop. That's what these smaller
- 28:51Speaker 2: markets like Milwaukee do. So it's desirable for a lot
- 28:54Speaker 2: of reasons. You still have to tease there. You still have,
- 28:57Speaker 2: you know, a good core. Why not San Diego. J
- 29:02Speaker 2: Preler doesn't meddle too much with his managers. I don't
- 29:04Speaker 2: think it's a good job to have. It's just tough
- 29:08Speaker 2: to beat the Dodgers. But you have to think about
- 29:11Speaker 2: the wild card most years, and that's okay too.
- 29:13Speaker 3: So I don't see why not San Diego.
- 29:16Speaker 1: Yeah, have you been to San Diego? I'll take it.
- 29:18Speaker 1: Anybody want to hire me, I'll take it. That's gonna
- 29:20Speaker 1: do it. For this episode of Fair Territory with our
- 29:23Speaker 1: guest Jesse Rogers, we appreciate your insight as always, best
