- 0:01Are you eating dog food? There's a story behind that.
- 0:06This is your daily message from Chad #12124 to upgrade your
- 0:10mental game today by telling yourself a better story.
- 0:12Because the most important story you hear is the story you tell
- 0:15yourself. This message is dedicated to Dan
- 0:18Birchy. Here's the upgrade words,
- 0:21influence, perception, and upgraded thinking make sure
- 0:24they're helping me really see. Here's the story.
- 0:29There's a story often told about Alfred Korsinski, an engineer
- 0:32and the founder of the field of general semantics, which is
- 0:35about the way words work. During a lecture, the story
- 0:38goes, he pulls out a packet of biscuits wrapped in plain white
- 0:41paper. He eats 1.
- 0:43He offers them around the room. The students take one, then
- 0:46another. They're chewing and nodding.
- 0:49Good biscuits, don't you think? He asked the students.
- 0:52Then he tears off a cover. On the bag.
- 0:54Underneath is the original packaging.
- 0:57There's a picture of a dog's head and two words.
- 1:00Dog cookies. Everyone stops chewing.
- 1:04Many immediately spit out what is left in their mouths. 2
- 1:07students ran for the bathroom to throw up, Korsinski said.
- 1:10Quote, I've just demonstrated that people don't just eat food,
- 1:14but also words, and the taste of the former is often outdone by
- 1:18the taste of the latter. End Quote.
- 1:21Nothing about the biscuit changed.
- 1:23Not the flour, not the crunch, not the taste.
- 1:26Only the words changed. And the words one, that's you
- 1:30and me. We've lived in the label.
- 1:33We live in the words attached to our daily lives.
- 1:36We navigate with stories we're told and that we tell ourselves.
- 1:40Sometimes they're helpful and sometimes they aren't.
- 1:43And unfortunately, we aren't even paying attention to them.
- 1:46We just react to them. Gorzynski is most famous for the
- 1:51phrase the map is not the territory.
- 1:54You probably heard that line used before.
- 1:56That doesn't mean maps are worthless.
- 1:58His fuller statement was quote a map is not the territory it
- 2:02represents, but if correct, it has a similar structure to the
- 2:06territory which accounts for its usefulness.
- 2:09In quote he never said maps are worthless.
- 2:12He said they're useful, but they can mislead us when they're
- 2:16wrong or when we mistake them for reality itself.
- 2:21Maps have to be tested and interpreted against reality.
- 2:25When the map app says there should be a McDonald's at the
- 2:28corner of such and such streets and it isn't there, of course
- 2:32nobody stands in the empty lot insisting the restaurant must be
- 2:35there. But what about with the maps
- 2:38that matter? The McDonald's map gets verified
- 2:41instantly. The I'm bad with Relationships
- 2:45map however drawn decades ago, has never once been checked
- 2:51along with 1000 other labels and stories.
- 2:53Like I'm not a morning person, I'm bad with money.
- 2:57That meaning is going to be a disaster.
- 3:00They don't like me. Those are maps.
- 3:04Some are good, some were drawn years ago by a scared kid and
- 3:07never updated though. You navigate by your map either
- 3:11way, every day, every decision. So the question isn't whether
- 3:16you have a story. You do.
- 3:18The question is whether it's any good, and whether you remember
- 3:22to check it against the ground. There's a saying for this when
- 3:26the map and the terrain disagree.
- 3:28Trust the terrain. Believe the terrain.
- 3:32The conversation you're dreading might go fine.
- 3:34The person you've written off might surprise you.
- 3:37The thing you labeled dog cookies might be the best
- 3:40biscuit you ever had. The better story to tell
- 3:43yourself is I draw my map from the train and then navigate by
- 3:48the new map. The story you tell yourself
- 3:51about your life is a map of your life.
- 3:54It isn't your life, but you're navigating by it either way.
- 3:58So the only question is whether the map is any good, whether
- 4:01it's doing you good, and whether you remember to check it against
- 4:04the ground. Tell me a story of a time the
- 4:07label turned out worse than the real thing to from
- 4:10chadsmith@gmail.com. Send someone a text and ask them
- 4:13what's the story you told yourself that turned out to be
- 4:16wrong? You can get a free copy of my
