- 0:25Welcome to Kick Ass Daily, where we bring news, trivia, fun
- 0:29facts, and more just for curious kids like you.
- 0:32Today, we're going to explore the basics of volleyball.
- 0:35Whether you've seen people playing volleyball at school, on
- 0:38the beach, or even on TV, you might wonder how the game works,
- 0:41what the rules are, and how you can get started.
- 0:44So let's jump in and learn all about volleyball together.
- 0:48First, let's talk about what volleyball actually is.
- 0:51Volleyball is a team sport played with a ball and a net.
- 0:54The main goal is to send the ball over the net and into the
- 0:58other teams court so that they cannot return it.
- 1:00Each team tries to prevent the ball from touching the ground on
- 1:03their side while working together to send it back over
- 1:06the net. It's a game that involves quick
- 1:08thinking, teamwork and lots of movement.
- 1:11Now let's look at where volleyball is played.
- 1:14Volleyball can be played both indoors and outdoors.
- 1:17Indoor volleyball is usually played on a wooden or synthetic
- 1:20cord inside a gym, while beach volleyball is played on sand.
- 1:24The size of the court is different for indoor and beach
- 1:27volleyball, but the basic idea of the game stays the same.
- 1:30Most school gyms have volleyball courts, and many parks have sand
- 1:34volleyball courts too. A standard volleyball court for
- 1:37indoor games is shaped like a rectangle.
- 1:40It measures 18 meters long and 9 meters wide.
- 1:44That's about as long as 2 school buses placed end to end and as
- 1:48wide as a small classroom. The net in the center divides
- 1:51the court into two equal halves. For boys, the net is usually set
- 1:56at a height of 2.43 meters, and for girls, it's 2.24 meters.
- 2:01That's a little higher than the average door at home.
- 2:04Next, let's talk about the teams in traditional indoor
- 2:07volleyball. Each team has six players on the
- 2:10court at a time. These players have different
- 2:13positions and roles, but they all work together to keep the
- 2:16ball from touching the ground on their side.
- 2:18The main positions are the setter, outside hitter, middle
- 2:21blocker, opposite hitter, and libero.
- 2:24Don't worry, we'll explain what these mean soon.
- 2:27The game starts with a serve. The server stands behind the end
- 2:30line and hits the ball over the net to the other team.
- 2:34The serve can be underhand or overhand.
- 2:37If you're just starting out, an underhand serve might feel
- 2:40easier because you swing your arm from low to high and hit the
- 2:43ball with your fist or open hand.
- 2:45An overhand serve is when you toss the ball in the air and hit
- 2:49it above your head, which can be more powerful.
- 2:52Once the ball is served, the receiving team's job is to keep
- 2:55the ball off the ground and send it back over the net.
- 2:58The team can touch the ball up to three times before sending it
- 3:01back. These three touches usually go
- 3:03like this. First a pass, then a set, and
- 3:07finally a spike or attack. Each player can only hit the
- 3:10ball once in a row. Let's break down those 3 main
- 3:14moves. The first move is the pass or
- 3:17bump. This is usually the first
- 3:19contact after a serve or an attack from the other team.
- 3:22To bump you join your forearms together and use them to guide
- 3:26the ball up into the air. Imagine your arms forming a flat
- 3:29surface and you want the ball to pop up high so your teammate can
- 3:32reach it easily. The second move is the set.
- 3:35The set is a gentle push of the ball using your fingertips.
- 3:39The setter's job is to get under the ball and push it up high and
- 3:42close to the net so that another player can jump and hit it over.
- 3:46Setting takes practice because you want the ball to go exactly
- 3:50where your teammate needs it. The third move is the spike or
- 3:54attack. This is when a player jumps and
- 3:57hits the ball hard over the net into the other team's court.
- 4:00The goal is to hit the ball where the other team can't reach
- 4:03it. Spiking can be really exciting,
- 4:06and it's one of the most dramatic parts of the game.
- 4:09Besides those three moves, there are a few other important skills
- 4:12in volleyball. One is blocking.
- 4:15Blocking happens at the net, and it's when a player jumps up with
- 4:18their arms straight and tries to stop the ball from coming over.
- 4:22If you block the ball well, it might fall right back into the
- 4:25other team's court. Another skill is digging.
- 4:28Digging is when you make a low, quick move to keep a hard hit
- 4:31ball from touching the ground. This happens a lot when the
- 4:34other team spikes the ball and your job is to dive or stretch
- 4:38to keep the play going. Let's talk about the different
- 4:40positions on the court. Each player has a role.
- 4:43The setter is like the team's playmaker.
- 4:46The setter touches the ball more than anyone else and is
- 4:49responsible for setting up the attackers.
- 4:51The outside hitter is usually the main attacker, hitting the
- 4:55ball from the left side of the court.
- 4:57The middle blocker is great at blocking and also attacks from
- 5:00the center. The opposite hitter plays on the
- 5:02right side and helps with both attacking and blocking.
- 5:06The libero is a special defensive player who wears a
- 5:09different color jersey. The libero can attack the ball
- 5:12above the net but is really good at passing and digging.
- 5:15Did you know that the libero position was added to volleyball
- 5:18in 1998 to make the game more exciting and improve defense?
- 5:22The libero can replace any back row player without needing to
- 5:25tell the referee first, which helps the team stay strong on
- 5:28defense. Now, how do you score points in
- 5:31volleyball? A-Team scores a point when the
- 5:33other team lets the ball touch the ground in their court, hits
- 5:36the ball out of bounds, or makes a mistake like touching the net
- 5:40or hitting the ball more than three times before sending it
- 5:43over. In most games, you play to 25
- 5:46points, but you have to win by at least 2 points.
- 5:49If the score is tied at 24 to 24, the game continues until one
- 5:54team leads by two points. Matches are usually best out of
- 5:57five sets, and the last set is played to 15 points.
- 6:01Volleyball has a rotation system.
- 6:03After winning a point when the other team served, your team
- 6:07rotates positions clockwise. This means everyone gets a turn
- 6:10in each position, including serving.
- 6:13It keeps the game fair and exciting.
- 6:16Let's talk about the equipment. The main things you need to play
- 6:18volleyball are a volleyball, a net, and a court.
- 6:22Volleyballs are light and about the size of a soccer ball, but
- 6:25they're made with a softer covering.
- 6:27Indoor volleyballs are usually white, while beach volleyballs
- 6:31can be colorful. Players usually wear comfortable
- 6:33athletic clothes and special shoes that grip the floor well.
- 6:37Some players wear knee pads to protect their knees when they
- 6:40die for the ball. Did you know that the first
- 6:42volleyball was made from the inside of a basketball?
- 6:45Volleyball was invented in 1895 by a man named William G Morgan
- 6:50in Massachusetts, USA. He wanted to create a new game
- 6:54that was less rough than basketball but still fun and
- 6:56active. He called it Mintonette at
- 6:59first, but the name changed to volleyball because the main
- 7:02action is volleying the ball back and forth.
- 7:04Volleyball is played all over the world.
- 7:07It's an Olympic sport, which means the best teams from
- 7:10different countries compete every four years at the Olympic
- 7:13Games. Millions of people watch these
- 7:15matches on TV and some players become very famous for their
- 7:19skills. If you want to try volleyball,
- 7:22you don't need a lot of special equipment to get started.
- 7:25You can practice passing and setting with a friend or even
- 7:28against a wall. If you have a net, you can play
- 7:31simple games at the park or beach.
- 7:33Many schools have volleyball clubs or teams you can join.
- 7:37Playing volleyball is a great way to make friends, stay active
- 7:40and have fun. Here are some fun facts about
- 7:43volleyball. The longest volleyball game ever
- 7:46played lasted more than 85 hours.
- 7:49That's over three days. In beach volleyball.
- 7:52There are only two players on each team and the court is
- 7:55smaller than an indoor volleyball.
- 7:57The fastest volleyball serve ever recorded was more than 132
- 8:01kilometers per hour, which is faster than most cars drive on a
- 8:04city street. Volleyball helps you develop
- 8:07important skills like teamwork, communication and quick
- 8:10reflexes. Players have to talk to each
- 8:13other, call out who's going for the ball, and make fast
- 8:16decisions. It's a sport where everyone
- 8:18needs to work together because 1 great playoff and starts with a
- 8:21good pass, then a set and then an attack.
- 8:24To stay safe while playing volleyball, remember to warm up
- 8:27before you start, stretch your muscles and drink plenty of
- 8:31water. Always pay attention to your
- 8:33teammates and keep an eye on the ball.
- 8:35If you're learning to dive or slide, knee pads can help
- 8:38protect you from bumps and bruises.
- 8:40Let's do a quick recap of what we learned today.
- 8:43Volleyball is a team sport played with a ball and a net.
- 8:47The goal is to send the ball over the net and landed in the
- 8:50other team's court. Each team has six players on the
- 8:53court, and they can touch the ball up to three times before
- 8:56sending it over. The main moves are passing,
- 8:59setting, spiking, blocking, and digging.
- 9:02Players rotate positions after winning points on a serve, and
- 9:05matches are played to 25 points in most cases.
- 9:09Volleyball can be played indoors or outdoors, and anyone can
