- 0:14Let's find out. Hey Gaspers, welcome back to
- 0:17GASP the Pod, the podcast for the gays, the girls, and
- 0:21especially the gay girls. Remember last episode when I was
- 0:26like, Oh my God, this is like my last episode in my New York City
- 0:31apt. I lied.
- 0:33Like that was the last episode for that set.
- 0:37But like, if you're watching this on YouTube, you will see
- 0:40that things have been taken down.
- 0:43I am moving things out. My room is like pretty much
- 0:45empty. So this is actually the last
- 0:49episode I'll have in my apartment.
- 0:52That one was the last one for the set.
- 0:54I literally move out tomorrow. So we have a little bit of a
- 0:57different format going on here. What are we talking about today,
- 1:00you ask? We're talking about the Pop
- 1:04Girly takeover over the last two years and specifically the
- 1:09little problem that's emerging in the pop girly community.
- 1:13I will tell you what that is because I realized that the
- 1:15title doesn't like explain what the problem is.
- 1:20The problem is racism and misogyny.
- 1:23Let's get into it. For those who tuned in last
- 1:26episode, I pretty much was saying that I'm moving to DC to
- 1:30move in with my girlfriend. This podcast is continuing.
- 1:33Don't worry. We're just you're just going to
- 1:35move with me. I think I'm going to do some
- 1:37like moving vlogs. I'm not usually a vlogger.
- 1:41A few years ago when I started tik toking, I started like doing
- 1:46like day in the life and like get ready with me.
- 1:48And like, I don't really feel like they caught on.
- 1:51Maybe I just didn't have like that aesthetic of a life, but
- 1:54they did not catch on. So but I kind of feel like I
- 1:56want to bring it back in terms of like housekeeping for this
- 1:59podcast. I have a very exciting guest
- 2:02joining me next week. Also, I'm sure you guys know
- 2:05this already, but on my Patreon, I started a new series called On
- 2:10the Rumor Mill. It's a bonus series, so you do
- 2:13have to subscribe to be able to get that content.
- 2:16I'm also going to add it on Spotify subscriptions.
- 2:19And I have one episode out right now we talk about like rumors
- 2:23obviously on the Rumor Mill and I get my $0.02 on if I think
- 2:26that they're true or false. So go check that out, subscribe
- 2:29on Patreon, subscribe on YouTube, do all the things.
- 2:33And Speaking of Patreon, I need to shout out my weekly shout out
- 2:36to my special #1 Gaspers, my subscription members.
- 2:41So thank you so much to Monique F for being a subscription
- 2:45member and being a number one Gasper.
- 2:47You're the fucking best and thank you so much for joining.
- 2:49Oh and lastly, of course, merch is still available.
- 2:53Let me know if you have any ideas for what I should do for
- 2:55pride merch, but I'm already starting to craft this up
- 2:58because we're really going to need pride month this year to
- 3:02keep us sane and normal. So I'm like really hyped up for
- 3:06pride this year. I hope you guys are too.
- 3:09All right, let's get into the topic today.
- 3:12We're talking about the pop girlies and, and their issue and
- 3:14not necessarily their issue, but rather Stan culture and the pop
- 3:19girly cultures issue, right? That is a little teensy, little
- 3:24bit of racism and misogyny and in some cases a lot of it
- 3:29specifically. What are we going to talk about?
- 3:30We're going to talk about the takeover of pop girly culture
- 3:33over the last two years. Going to talk about how the
- 3:35culture centers white girls. Of course, we're going to talk
- 3:38about racism within the fan base, misogyny within the fan
- 3:41bases, misogyny and like pitting women against each other that I
- 3:47feel is a resurgence, but maybe has just existed the entire time
- 3:51and Cowboy Carter controversy. And this is really what made me
- 3:55want to do this episode, right? And then finally, the strictness
- 3:58of genres. And of course, in every episode,
- 4:03there's going to be an LGBTQ element, right?
- 4:07OK, let's talk about pop Girly takeover, the takeover that
- 4:10everyone's been talking about South over the last few years,
- 4:13the girlies have pretty much taken over the entire industry.
- 4:17Let's name a few, the ones that we all know have stayed
- 4:20releasing albums. And then there's been this like
- 4:23rise of so many new pop stars and maybe aren't even new, but
- 4:29like this sudden rise to like popular fame that they've all
- 4:33had fan bases over the last like 5:00 to 10:00-ish years, but
- 4:37like in the last two years have gotten so big.
- 4:41So the ones that like we've all that we all know and love that
- 4:44have stayed here, that have been here for a while, Taylor Swift,
- 4:47obviously Dua Lipa, Doji Cat, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Ariana
- 4:52Grande, Sizza, Beyoncé. Now, of course there's more like
- 4:55Katy Perry, like Selena Gomez, etcetera.
- 4:57But I want to talk about these people because these are the
- 5:01girlies that have like, continuously been releasing
- 5:04albums and have made the field crowded, right?
- 5:07It's not like they take five years off.
- 5:09And they're not like releasing an album that doesn't get
- 5:11nominated. Like all these people are like
- 5:14they're active. And then of course we have these
- 5:17newbie stars that like all of a sudden have had this a huge rise
- 5:22to fame. Like this is Charlie XCX,
- 5:24Sabrina Carpenter, Olivia Rodrigo, Gracie Abrams, Tate
- 5:28McRae, Chapel Roan, Billy Eilish.
- 5:30She's young, so it's only been like a few years of her having
- 5:34this like massive fame. Addison Rae, Tyler Renee Rapp,
- 5:39Victoria Monet, like all of these stars have very specific
- 5:44and active fan bases that are very passionate about them.
- 5:48And this is a crowded fucking space.
- 5:51It's kind of insane how many girlies are like constantly
- 5:54releasing amazing music. Dochi and some of these people
- 5:58too dip into like R&B and like other types of music, but like
- 6:01are just very popular right now. This is from the Telegraph.
- 6:05And like when you look up like pop, girly is taking over.
- 6:07There's so many articles here. The Telegraph says the end of
- 6:10the old boys club, how women took over pop music.
- 6:14Koog Radio says the resurgence of pop music and how the girls
- 6:19are dominating the scene. The New Yorker says it's the
- 6:21summer of girly pop that was from 2024.
- 6:24Brat summer, right? So we're aware of this female
- 6:28takeover, right? Has that actually impacted our
- 6:32culture? Is the question?
- 6:34Is it showing that we're, like, having progress in terms of
- 6:38like, valuing women artists, girls and pop and female
- 6:43listeners? Or is it just like disguising
- 6:46issues that are still there? I think the latter.
- 6:49And I do think there's an impact, right, of like, women
- 6:52being on the prominent stage. But that doesn't mean like, when
- 6:55racism and, like, homophobia like, ended.
- 6:58And I think that Beyoncé winning the album of the year, kind of
- 7:02like exposed opposed the misogyny that still exists, the
- 7:07racism that still exists, and these deeper issues that like,
- 7:12just because you are a fan of a liberal girly pop icon queen
- 7:19doesn't mean you're like, liberal or an accepting person,
- 7:23which is like a tough pill to swallow.
- 7:25Are we actually shifting? Is it a feminaminon?
- 7:29Let's find out. Like I think it's just such a
- 7:32crazy shift between like 2024 brat summer and then like Trump
- 7:35being elected. Like it felt like our society
- 7:39was like valuing women and like it was like the summer for
- 7:42girls. And then it all shifted, and
- 7:45it's like, is it actually a shift or was there never
- 7:48actually that much change behind us just being like, Oh my God,
- 7:53girly pops. You know, the numbers of fans
- 7:56that support these artists, If they actually were, like, as
- 8:02progressive as the artist, we might actually be in a better
- 8:05culture. But it's like this weird
- 8:07realization where it's like, oh, my God, are there like, Trump
- 8:10supporters being like Brat Sommer?
- 8:11And I think like, yeah, which is so scary, right?
- 8:15Like we need more than just a feminaminon and just being like,
- 8:18Oh my God, girls. Like if we want to be like pro
- 8:22girl movement, pro pop girly movement, that means we're pro
- 8:26LGBTQ rights in action. That means we're like feminist
- 8:31in action. That means like we're like not
- 8:33racist in action. And it's like, all these actual
- 8:37pop stars are that way, but it seems like their fans maybe
- 8:42aren't. And like in 2025 and in 2024, we
- 8:47had mostly women being nominated when it came to the pop awards,
- 8:52right? So like in 2025, best pop solo
- 8:55performance, all women nominated best pop duo and group
- 8:59performance, all women nominated.
- 9:01Best pop vocal album, all women nominated.
- 9:04In 2024, best pop solo performance, all women
- 9:08nominated, best pop duo performance, women were in each
- 9:11group. Same thing with 2025 best pop
- 9:14vocal album. There was only one man and it
- 9:16was like Ed Sheeran, which, like, doesn't count.
- 9:18But like, this is an obvious shift at this point.
- 9:21Pop music is girly pop music. And like, the women are the ones
- 9:26being like, yeah, we're pop music.
- 9:28And it's like, has that even had a real shift on our culture?
- 9:32Like, maybe it hasn't as much as maybe we thought, right?
- 9:35Literally, Harpers Bazaar said in 2024, the women of pop
- 9:39dominated the Spotify charts. In 2024, for the first time
- 9:42ever, the top five albums of the year were all female artists.
- 9:47Like, we're seeing this culture shift this past year with Brad
- 9:50Sommer again, like Taylor Swift, the Heiress tour and all of
- 9:54this, like Barbie movie and all of this focus on like, women
- 9:58dominating it. And perhaps the women that were
- 10:03like, part of this movement didn't get the memo that that
- 10:06also is, like, political. Or was there so much of A
- 10:10backlash that it pushed like, Trump to win?
- 10:14You know what I mean? Because, like, music is
- 10:16political. OK, Let's talk about how pop
- 10:19girly culture centers white women.
- 10:21OK? AP News says in 2024 that quote,
- 10:25due to a shift of streaming activity in the second-half of
- 10:28the year, the pop took the number one spot.
- 10:31Female solo artist led the surge in pop consumption as streams of
- 10:34their music were responsible for nearly 2/3 of all audio streams
- 10:39amongst the top 100 pop artists in the US, and this shift was
- 10:42led by specifically six women. Who were those six women?
- 10:47Mostly white girls. Taylor Swift #1 #2 Billie eilish
- 10:52#3 Sabrina Carpenter #4 Ariana Grande, Top 4 all white #5
- 10:57Olivia Rodrigo and Olivia is half Filipina, 6 Chapel round.
- 11:01So five out of six of these people are white girls.
- 11:04Now, it's not their fault that there's like, successful and
- 11:08they don't need to be less successful.
- 11:10But it is interesting when like the push of a feminaminon is
- 11:14white women, they're going to have white women fans.
- 11:17And these white women, as we know, vote for Trump.
- 11:20It's this guise of like, feminism.
- 11:23And it's like, are there fans really as feminist as like we
- 11:26think that the movement is like when pop is dominant and girlies
- 11:31are dominating pop and the white girls are specifically
- 11:34dominating in this category. We can't forget that gender is
- 11:39like not the only thing at play here.
- 11:43And this is great for women. It really is.
- 11:45I don't want to like make it seem like I think that this is
- 11:48like bad for women, but with the culture of pop girly summer and
- 11:53there's like this guise of progress and like, Oh my God,
- 11:56women are like winning in the world, right?
- 11:59That's what it kind of felt like.
- 12:00Does it allow subtle and like very much not subtle racism to
- 12:06slip in because we're like, Oh my God, progress.
- 12:09What's actually going on with these fandoms?
- 12:11And also, especially when like Stan culture is at an all time
- 12:15high, people feel the need to like, defend and protect their
- 12:18faves. I think is also an element here
- 12:21that we need to look into. OK, let's talk about like
- 12:24specifically racism and misogyny within pop girly culture with
- 12:28Stan culture growing and like intensity.
- 12:32And I think like TikTok has like huge part to play in this,
- 12:35right? It's so easy to like find
- 12:37yourself amongst just your fandom when when you're in
- 12:41TikTok. And for example, when I open
- 12:43TikTok, it's mostly Taylor Swift.
- 12:45Like that's just and like queer stuff, right?
- 12:48And like political stuff. But that's because I'm like
- 12:50liking my algorithm serves me that content.
- 12:53So I think because of TikTok and the fierceness of like
- 12:57fierceness of the algorithm, we're seeing only like mostly
- 13:02content from our own fandom. And we think that these opinions
- 13:05are normal. And it also makes people like
- 13:09much more passionate because like you're only seeing people
- 13:12that agree with you. I think algorithms only
- 13:14intensify Stan culture. And I do feel like celebrity
- 13:18culture now is like either you are like having parasocial
- 13:23relationships and not always like there's obviously normal
- 13:26people here, but it feels like there's two big groups, people
- 13:29who are like having pair social relationships with their like,
- 13:32fave pop star and like feeling the need to defend them over
- 13:36everything. And like, because of social
- 13:39media, we feel like we know them so much or it's people that are
- 13:43like disengaged completely that like don't like worship
- 13:47celebrities, you know, like this whole thing being like, OK,
- 13:49let's unfollow like Kylie Jenner and like show her that she
- 13:53doesn't have like influence in the world.
- 13:54So it feels like 2 very separate and distinct behaviours towards
- 13:59celebrities, which I don't think is ever healthy when there's
- 14:02like only two ways to like approach something and both are
- 14:07very extreme. And like, honestly, I totally
- 14:10support disengaging from celebrities.
- 14:12I think that makes more sense than having like, I don't know,
- 14:14this need to like defend someone with your life.
- 14:17And like, my question is, is there a resurgence of misogyny
- 14:21here or has it always existed in the pop stars have just been
- 14:25doing a good job of like pretending like it doesn't
- 14:28exist. Feels like there's a resurgence
- 14:30of racism and like pitting pop girls against each other in
- 14:35order for someone's like fave to win.
- 14:37Or has that always existed? And we just thought we were like
- 14:40having progress over the last like 10 to 15?
- 14:42And what's interesting is I thought that that kind of like
- 14:45ended and not that like Taylor Swift, like has influence over
- 14:48like every Stan of every pop star, but like literally.
- 14:52And you need to calm down. Like she like hugs Katy Perry at
- 14:55the end and rumors say that they kissed, but whatever.
- 14:58She literally says we see you over there on the Internet
- 15:00comparing all the girls that are killing it.
- 15:02But we figured you out. We all know now we all got
- 15:04crowns. You need to calm down.
- 15:06Like I thought we were like in this culture where we like knew
- 15:09not to pit women against each other, but apparently not.
- 15:12I mean, she like in this music video has like all the drag
- 15:14Queens personifying these main pop, girly pop girlies like
- 15:20Beyoncé's. They're like, I really felt like
- 15:22we were in a culture where like even pop stars were saying like,
- 15:25don't put me against her. Felt like women were rejecting
- 15:29this like thing that men and the media were doing to pit women
- 15:33against each other. But it seems like now it's girls
- 15:36themselves doing it, which like, we need to move past and reject
- 15:40this finally. And also also what's interesting
- 15:43is that even when the pop stars themselves, the celebrities
- 15:47themselves go out of their way to be like, stop doing this,
- 15:53their fans like don't listen to them.
- 15:55It's wild to me, like Beyoncé and Taylor literally support
- 15:59each other physically by going to each other's documentary
- 16:03premieres. We'll go into the Cowboy Carter
- 16:05drama of course. But like after Cowboy Carter won
- 16:09and there was a bunch of like Billy fans being like so fucking
- 16:12pissed about it and racist about it.
- 16:14Phineas posted quote. I don't want to see anyone with
- 16:18a photo of me or Billy as their profile picture getting in
- 16:21fights with other artists fans in comment sections be at peace.
- 16:25And then it like still continued.
- 16:26It's like, wouldn't you listen to like your fave?
- 16:29It's almost like fan culture is more reliant on like what the
- 16:33rest of the fans are doing rather than like listening to
- 16:36the artists themselves, which is just wild.
- 16:39It's like Swifty's being homophobic and it's like your
- 16:42fave is not homophobic. I think.
- 16:45Just kidding. And then my other question is
- 16:48for these celebrities and pop stars who have been around for
- 16:51so long and they have like new generations of fans.
- 16:55Like Taylor Swift has young fans who were not born when 1989 came
- 16:59out that are actively on the Internet or like, weren't born
- 17:02when Red came out and like, are actively in my comment section.
- 17:06Do these younger fans maybe like, know the culture of award
- 17:11shows? Because before social media,
- 17:12that's all we kind of had in order to, like, kind of get
- 17:15access to like our favorite artists.
- 17:19And maybe we just knew more about what like award shows mean
- 17:24because it's not a competition in popularity.
- 17:27Most of these except for like, I think Billboard Awards.
- 17:31I'll have to check. Like Grammys and stuff is not
- 17:36popularity. It is based off of like the
- 17:38music itself and not like the charts.
- 17:41The larger question that I think I've been asking this entire
- 17:44time is like are these fans as feminist and not racist as their
- 17:48faves and do these celebrities need to do more in order to make
- 17:53sure their fans stay in line? I think the answer is yes.
- 17:55There's a false assumption that young girls are the fans of
- 18:01liberal. White pop stars would be liberal
- 18:04and feminist and I think I've made that mistake.
- 18:06Like is this a feminine or is it just women like white women?
- 18:10According to CA WP2024A, majority of white women continue
- 18:15to support Trump in all 2024 election surveys.
- 18:18And these pop stars, these white pop stars, they have white women
- 18:22fans. So the math is not mouthing
- 18:25that, like the feminaminon is actually pushing feminism
- 18:29because according to Stats, we got a lot of conservatives in
- 18:32here. And so it's like, is it enough
- 18:35for pop stars just be like women?
- 18:37Or do we need to be like feminism?
- 18:40You know, it's not enough just to be like women if there is not
- 18:43like a message behind it. And what's interesting is like,
- 18:46I do think these celebrities are pushing these messages and their
- 18:51music and their music video and who they hang out with and what
- 18:53they say. But like, is it enough or are
- 18:55these fans just kind of dumb? Like, how did people watch
- 18:58Barbie and, like, vote for Trump?
- 19:01They're like, yay, I love Barbie, and then they vote for
- 19:03Trump. Like, it's not translating.
- 19:06The Music Business Association says that more females say they
- 19:09enjoy pop and country. And we'll talk about how pop and
- 19:12country, sometimes we assume that, like, pop music is kind of
- 19:16its own thing or maybe just the gays in pop music.
- 19:19But like, pop and country share a lot of the same fans.
- 19:22So we're seeing this like, racist culture of country fans
- 19:26bleed into to pop music, which is worrisome.
- 19:29And I'm not saying you shouldn't like country.
- 19:31I like country, like certain country.
- 19:33But it's important to point out the racism in like, pop country
- 19:37today. If these white girls are like
- 19:39consuming both country and pop, it's not like they're all
- 19:42suddenly just so cool with black people.
- 19:45And also, we'll go into like, CM as racism very soon.
- 19:49OK, let's talk about the Cowboy Carter controversy.
- 19:53Right? Until 2025, as we all know,
- 19:55Beyoncé had never won album of the year at the Grammys, even
- 20:00though she has the most Grammys of literally all time.
- 20:03Album of the year is the most coveted award at the Grammys.
- 20:07So it's not like she's just like not been awarded.
- 20:10And then like, all of a sudden she, like, quote, bought her way
- 20:13to this award. She has the most Grammys of all
- 20:15time and not one had been album of the year until this year,
- 20:19which is crazy. And then when she did, which was
- 20:22deserved. And a lot of people say Cowboy
- 20:25Carter wasn't her best album. I personally agree.
- 20:28I think Lemonade was her best album.
- 20:31But just because Lemonade doesn't didn't win doesn't mean
- 20:34I think Cowboy Carter should not win.
- 20:36I think both should have won, but I think Lemonade was better
- 20:39and I think she deserved one album of the year with Lemonade
- 20:41as well and some other ones, right.
- 20:44Pop girly fans were fucking pissed to an extent that
- 20:49honestly I was really shocked by.
- 20:53And I know there's a lot of Beyoncé fans that were not
- 20:55shocked by this, which like totally makes sense.
- 20:58It's a good reminder for us. And I was like, good reminder
- 21:02for me to be like, Oh my God, like these pop girly fans are
- 21:06fucking racist. Like they can be racist.
- 21:09You don't have to like look like a fucking Trump supporter to be
- 21:13fucking racist. And honestly, specifically
- 21:17Billie Eilish fans, a lot of people were pissed.
- 21:19They're like, she got snubbed, which I do think she got
- 21:23snubbed, but other people won awards that she obviously didn't
- 21:28get. But for some reason Beyoncé was
- 21:30the target. Hulier.
- 21:32And I'm a Billie Eilish fan too, but it's not like I like solely
- 21:35stand her, but like people who are saying that oh, it's just
- 21:39like ridiculous. It's like, Oh my God, you guys
- 21:41would have never survived being a Taylor Swift fan during
- 21:43reputation. Like reputation wasn't even
- 21:45nominated for fucking shit. So it's like your faves are
- 21:48going to go through periods of time where they're not like
- 21:51being awarded in the way that you think that they should be.
- 21:55Now, when Taylor Swift didn't get nominated for anything for
- 21:58reputation, was I like yelling and saying like other singers
- 22:02didn't deserve it? No, it's not their fault.
- 22:06It's not someone else's fault that they're successful.
- 22:08And it's funny because Taylor Swift fans say this all the time
- 22:10Now they're and then they don't. Some of them did not bring that
- 22:14energy. And we're criticizing fucking
- 22:16Beyoncé being like so pissed she's successful.
- 22:19And I'm like, it's so hypocritical.
- 22:21Oh my God. Billy has been very much awarded
- 22:24for a lot of the things that she's done.
- 22:26Definitely not this last album. And I think that's like
- 22:29ridiculous. But do I think it's Beyoncé's
- 22:31fault? Fucking no.
- 22:32And I think Beyoncé deser of the year and I think hot take that
- 22:36when Billy was like crying when Beyoncé won, we have no idea why
- 22:40she was crying. She could be crying she lost.
- 22:42She also could been crying because she was so happy for
- 22:44Beyoncé, which everyone like Beyoncé is the is an artists
- 22:48favorite artist. If Billy's actually pissed at
- 22:52Beyoncé, I think that's fucking insane.
- 22:54I don't think that that's true. Like fans will make up theories
- 22:57to make it make sense, to make their own behavior make sense.
- 23:01And what's interesting about the whole Billy fan reaction and
- 23:04like, I was shocked that it was Billy fans.
- 23:07I was like, we you guys know that Billy is queer.
- 23:12They know that she's queer. And maybe a lot of them, maybe a
- 23:15lot of these fans are queer too. I'm assuming that they are.
- 23:17They all expose their racism at the same time.
- 23:21And it's just a really stark, it's a stark reminder to us that
- 23:25being LGBTQ does not mean you can't be racist as fuck.
- 23:31And it's a reminder that like, many gay people are racist.
- 23:36And it doesn't even make any sense to me how you can be gay
- 23:39and racist because like, you are part of an identity that's
- 23:43literally so marginalized, but you can't recognize other
- 23:47marginalized groups. That's so fucking embarrassing.
- 23:50And someone should take your gay card.
- 23:51But like some of these racist posts for three days after
- 23:55Beyoncé won, God I was just so fucking shocked and pissed at
- 24:00the level of stupidity and not even trying to understand where
- 24:05people were coming from. I am want to be so clear on
- 24:08this. If someone calls you racist,
- 24:10homophobic or whatever and they're part of that community.
- 24:12So if you're being called racist by black person, if you're being
- 24:15called homophobic by a queer person, if you're being called
- 24:17sexist by a woman. Right before you say how dare
- 24:21you call me that it wasn't racist for that blah blah blah.
- 24:24Wouldn't you think to yourself like holy shit, I don't want to
- 24:28be called racist. Think for a second like, did you
- 24:32do something racist? You can like work on yourself,
- 24:36it doesn't mean you're cancelled.
- 24:38Don't double down on shit though, because it only makes
- 24:40things worse. Just think for a second, like
- 24:43think about it for a second. Like your first reaction is to
- 24:47say that that that the person's being overdramatic.
- 24:49You are doubling down on your racism when you do that because
- 24:54people were so pissed that they were getting racist.
- 24:56They're like Oh my God is it racist when I like wanted my
- 25:00fave to win? No guys Oh my God again, nuance
- 25:05and fucking common sense. Don't be fucking stupid right
- 25:08now. You know what we're saying.
- 25:09Not everyone that was upset that Billy lost is racist.
- 25:13The people that were saying she won because she cheated, she
- 25:17doesn't deserve it. I would have been happy.
- 25:20This is the thing that gets me this comment.
- 25:22I would have been happy with any of the other women winning, but
- 25:25not Beyoncé, the one black woman.
- 25:29You realize that that looks so fucking racist.
- 25:32Not looks, but is to be like any of the other white girls.
- 25:35I would have loved to win. But the black girl, you look
- 25:37like a fucking idiot when you say that.
- 25:39A racist idiot and kind of. And you are one if you really
- 25:43think that because, like, where did this hate come from?
- 25:48I think a lot of it is, first of all, racism, but recycled down
- 25:52from country music because pop music shares a lot of country
- 25:56music fans. Just some of these other things
- 25:59that I heard like Calbey Carter was a bad album.
- 26:01Who even listened to Calbey Carter?
- 26:04Oh my God, everyone. There's so much music out here.
- 26:06Just because you didn't hear it doesn't mean it's not popular.
- 26:10And also this is the issue that I think social media has really
- 26:13created. Your opinion is not more valid
- 26:18than someone else's opinion on like taste, right?
- 26:21So something just because you didn't like something doesn't
- 26:25mean it's objectively bad. The narcissism in which we view
- 26:29our own opinion. People can disagree with you, so
- 26:32if you think Cowboy Carter was a bad album, I don't think you're
- 26:35racist for not liking it. But to say it's objectively bad
- 26:40is just so wrong because you didn't like it.
- 26:43But obviously it is good because ABC News says Cowboy Carter
- 26:47wasn't the number one on Billboard's Top Country Albums
- 26:50chart. So there's so many artists out
- 26:52there. Just because you didn't hear it
- 26:54doesn't mean it wasn't popular. And because you think because
- 26:57you've never heard of it is actually showing that, you know,
- 27:00no black people, People saying that she cheated is so
- 27:03ridiculous. And this same thing with like,
- 27:06right when a black woman succeeds at something you assume
- 27:09it can't because of her talent, it's fucking Beyoncé.
- 27:12These other things I heard was like, I mean, I saw this one
- 27:15specific post of this girl saying Taylor Swift could have
- 27:18written Texas Holdem at 15, but Beyoncé could never write Fresh
- 27:22out the Slammer. It's just so crazy to say that
- 27:26shit. And it's like you're just
- 27:27showing that you've never listened to like any of her
- 27:30songs because because Beyoncé absolutely could and is such a
- 27:34good songwriter. And like Beyoncé has some of the
- 27:36most striking emotional music of all time.
- 27:40In the same way that Taylor Swift fans, we say all the time,
- 27:43like, oh, if you don't like Taylor Swift, it's because
- 27:44you're only listening to like her number one hits.
- 27:47That's a really good reminder for you for Beyoncé.
- 27:49So maybe you think you don't like Beyoncé because you're only
- 27:52listening to Texas Holdem. If you've only listened to Texas
- 27:54Holdem, I don't want your opinion and also you can have an
- 27:57opinion without saying someone else's just is wrong.
- 28:01I've never seen this level of outrage over album of the year.
- 28:04And it's like right when a black woman wins, but not at any of
- 28:07the other artists that won any of the other awards that night
- 28:10that took took one from Billy. But the black woman you're
- 28:14pissed at, it just exposed their real feelings.
- 28:18And it's fascinating. And also for Taylor Swift fans
- 28:21to do this. It's like it is so clear that
- 28:23Taylor Swift is like a fan and a friend with Beyoncé and like,
- 28:27you guys are literally embarrassing us.
- 28:29I also saw a lot of people saying like, oh, how many
- 28:32songwriters that Beyoncé had on Cowboy Carter means that she
- 28:35shouldn't have won. She's still the artist that that
- 28:38sang it and collaborated with all of them.
- 28:40Bringing together a team doesn't mean you shouldn't win album of
- 28:44the year. It's so amazing when people
- 28:46write all their songs from scratch.
- 28:48That doesn't mean that collaboration is inherently
- 28:51wrong and that that should not be awarded period.
- 28:54Like, and it she didn't win for best songwriter, she won for
- 28:58album of the year. Like what are you guys not
- 29:00getting? And then of course, we heard
- 29:02Cowboy Carter isn't country. Let's get into it.
- 29:06I need to take this off. This is too hot, this sweater
- 29:08I'm wearing. Oh also, guys, I surprised my
- 29:11girlfriend for Valentine's Day with Cowboy Carter tickets.
- 29:15I mean, I might not literally such a good girlfriend.
- 29:19She's never seen Beyoncé live. I've never seen Beyoncé live.
- 29:22And I'm so fucking excited. I spend too much money, but I'm
- 29:25very excited. Let's talk about like the
- 29:27strictness of genres and this whole idea that, like, Beyoncé
- 29:31isn't country and all of this kind of stuff, right?
- 29:34So as we've said before, like popular country music today,
- 29:39especially like the ones that are celebrated at the CMA
- 29:43Awards, which are like white country artists, there's a
- 29:48history, a deep history of racism within country music
- 29:53today, which isn't surprising, right?
- 29:55But also and obviously conservatism.
- 29:58But what's ironic is like, like country takes a lot of
- 30:03inspiration from bluegrass and jazz and like, it's pretty much
- 30:07just shut black people out of the industry.
- 30:10And it's crazy that anyone has said like, first of all, Cowboy
- 30:13Carter's isn't country when she went out of her way to like
- 30:17include collaborations with people that are seen as country
- 30:21in order to who like make it known that she's like doing a
- 30:25country album. And yet that's not seen as
- 30:27country. Like she literally did a song
- 30:30with Dolly Parton, but that's like not still not country, but
- 30:33it's but it is when Dolly Parton does it.
- 30:35It's just the biggest thing here is race.
- 30:37And they can't explain it away with any other.
- 30:40They can't explain it. She's literally from Houston but
- 30:44Keith Urban is from Australia and he's country.
- 30:49The whole point is it doesn't matter where you're from.
- 30:51But if it did, Beyoncé would still be a country artist.
- 30:56I don't know if many people know this but I thought it was like
- 30:58obvious. Like the CMA's are racist.
- 31:00So a lot of Billy fans, which is just so fucking ironic that
- 31:04they're like arguing in defense of of the CMA's.
- 31:09When you're a Billy fan who's like liberal and queer and
- 31:13you're like, it just blows my mind the mental gymnastics to
- 31:16like, be able to be like racist but then like pro LGBTQ.
- 31:20I just can't understand that. But people are saying, yeah,
- 31:23Beyoncé's album wasn't country because the CMA's didn't
- 31:26nominate it. It's like, yeah, the CMA's are
- 31:29racist. Let's talk about it.
- 31:31And they historically blacklist artists for doing anything
- 31:35political. The Dixie Chicks and everyone
- 31:38should know this. Now if you're a Taylor Swift
- 31:40fan. Which like I don't understand
- 31:42how any Swifties are like pissed at Beyoncé just given everything
- 31:45that Taylor Swift has said ever. But like Taylor Swift in the
- 31:49Miss Americana documentary literally talks about how she
- 31:52was trained by like growing up in country music to not say or
- 31:56do anything controversial and look political because of what
- 31:59happened to the Dixie Chicks, formerly known as the Dixie
- 32:01Chicks, now the Chicks. The Dixie Chicks after George
- 32:06Bush like invaded Iraq, literally criticized him on
- 32:10stage, right? And after this happened, they
- 32:14were like pretty much blacklisted from the industry,
- 32:18OK. People were burning their CDs.
- 32:20People were like not listening anymore.
- 32:23The next year, the CMA S, they were booed like when they were
- 32:27announced like all this shit, it was fucking crazy.
- 32:30And their sales went down and all this stuff happened.
- 32:34They ended up having to be forced to apologize and then
- 32:36later they rescinded their apology like years later.
- 32:40But like this set an example that like you will be torched if
- 32:43you do anything political because country music is
- 32:46conservative and it's kind of like football.
- 32:49It's like don't open your mouth, like just sing.
- 32:51There's real people that are behind this.
- 32:53It's not just art from no perspective.
- 32:55The perspective is the people that are singing and making it.
- 32:58And then in 2016, the Chicks and Beyoncé did a collaboration on
- 33:03stage at the Cmas. This was so fucking
- 33:06controversial because a black woman was there, I guess.
- 33:08And by the way, black people are allowed at the CMA, so anyone
- 33:11that's like, Oh my God, the Cmas aren't racist because there's
- 33:13black singers there. And it's like, because they're
- 33:15not inherently pushing the boundaries.
- 33:17They're not putting their politics like into their music,
- 33:20and they're only allowed there because they're the good,
- 33:23obedient black artists that won't push the envelope for
- 33:27like, racial justice and like political issues.
- 33:29That's what the difference is. So fuck you if you're like, oh,
- 33:34but black people are still at the CMA.
- 33:36So it's not racist. It's like, Oh my God, use your
- 33:38big brain. Use your big brain.
- 33:40By the way, this is my favorite cup.
- 33:42I'm sure I've showed this before but it says don't talk to me
- 33:45until I've had my abortion. The Chicks and Beyoncé did this
- 33:48collaboration on stage at the Cmas in 2016.
- 33:51They face backlash and criticism.
- 33:54Like people were fucking pissed about this you guys.
- 33:57And the Chicks literally said that after this performance they
- 33:59quote were treated weird after this performance of Daddy
- 34:03Lessons. Like the fact that it wasn't
- 34:04just Beyoncé. The Chicks were like Yep we were
- 34:06treated weird for even collaborating with Beyoncé on
- 34:09stage which is a country song. Daddy Lessons is a country song.
- 34:13Beyoncé has been doing country before Cowboy Carter.
- 34:16And even if she hadn't, people are allowed to move into
- 34:20different genres. And we allow that for white
- 34:23artists, but not black artists. And like people that try to
- 34:27defend the Cmas or the Cmas themselves and defend the fact
- 34:30that Beyoncé like is not a country artist, they'll say that
- 34:33they don't fit the genre. That's their excuse.
- 34:36Another excuse when it's like what is actually lying
- 34:39underneath all of this? The strictness of genres is so
- 34:44arbitrary and it's just used in order to exclude marginalized
- 34:48identities. It's the same way that like pop
- 34:51girly fans excuse their ability to be like, oh, I hate Beyoncé
- 34:56by just saying like and or she didn't deserve it, by saying
- 34:59stuff like she's just not country or she didn't deserve it
- 35:02because I didn't like it. And that's just arbitrary
- 35:05excuses for just being racist. And I honestly just wish they
- 35:08would just be straight out racist.
- 35:10So then then we could like acknowledge, OK, you're racist,
- 35:13we don't listen to you anymore. But it's like this new wave of
- 35:17like silent racist that convince themselves that they're not and
- 35:20have and don't care about like being perceived as a good
- 35:23person. That's one of the biggest thing
- 35:24that I'm stuck on is like, don't people want to not be perceived
- 35:28as racist, homophobic and sexist?
- 35:30These pop stands, white young girls, do they not care about
- 35:36being perceived as racist? The fans of these major pop
- 35:40stars don't care that their pop idols have different political
- 35:44opinions in them, but are still trying to protect them.
- 35:48And it's like this weird thing where it's like they are
- 35:51obsessed with their faith, but then like feel like, oh, OK,
- 35:55it's totally OK that I don't have a, that they have a
- 35:57different political opinion than me.
- 35:59It's like Swifty's being like, oh, I don't care that Taylor
- 36:01Swift votes for Kamala Harris. I'm going to vote for Trump.
- 36:03And like, it's totally fine. Yeah, whatever.
- 36:05You shouldn't like, change your political beliefs based off of
- 36:07like a singer. But if you're so obsessed about
- 36:10like protecting and like thinking about them all the time
- 36:13and like you're, you are having this like parasocial
- 36:15relationship with them, but then like you are so clearly racist
- 36:20when like they are not. There's a separation there.
- 36:22And they convince themselves that they like have the same
- 36:25belief that their faves do. And I think it's kind of on
- 36:28celebrities to like call out their own fans and be more
- 36:32specific about like, you are not my fan if you're racist.
- 36:35And I think I kind of needed more from Billy after all of
- 36:38this because it was a lot of Billy Eilish fans.
- 36:41But anyways, back to genre and country music. 100 music and pop
- 36:46music as we know share a lot of fans, specifically white women
- 36:50and the same fans that are saying Beyoncé Calbe Carter
- 36:54isn't country are like the ones that love Taylor Swift and did
- 36:59not argue that 1989 is pop. Guys, Taylor Swift completely
- 37:04changed genres, had never done pop before and said I'm going to
- 37:09do a pop album. And we these fans, Swifties now
- 37:13who are like, yes, of course, so valid.
- 37:16And I can't believe anyone was upset that she just changed
- 37:20genres. Are the same people now that are
- 37:22saying, well, Beyoncé is in country?
- 37:24It's so hypocritical. I don't understand how people
- 37:27don't see it. We allow certain people to
- 37:29change genres, but certain people can't.
- 37:31And what's the biggest thing? The certain people that can't
- 37:35are the black ones. I really feel like all this
- 37:38Beyoncé stuff and winning album of the year just really showed
- 37:41us what a lot of fans truly think and expose a lot of racism
- 37:46and like misogyny within pop girly fandom that like PR wise
- 37:52and marketing wise. These pop girlies are like
- 37:54feminist and pro LGBTQ and anti racist and all this stuff but
- 37:58it's like their fans are not reflecting that in their
- 38:01behaviour. What's the point of having like
- 38:03a rat summer and like Oh my God yay women.
- 38:07But then it's like, fuck Beyoncé.
- 38:10What? It's just not consistent energy.
- 38:13And I think it's also showing us that there's a lot of silent
- 38:15racists and a lot of silent Trump supporters.
- 38:18And it's the same way when we like people are like, Oh my God,
- 38:21I just found out that my fave influencer is a Trump supporter.
- 38:23And it's like, pretty young white girls can be Trump
- 38:27supporters too. It's so scary, but it's true.
- 38:30Even the ones that feel like they're like hip and stuff to
- 38:32the culture can be Trump supporters.
- 38:34Not me though. All right, hope you guys enjoyed
- 38:36this episode. I hope you have an amazing week.
- 38:38I got my merch, subscribe on YouTube, subscribe on Spotify,
- 38:42subscribe to my Patreon, all the things.
- 38:45Let me know any ideas you have, I will try to incorporate them.
- 38:48OK, love you guys. Have a great week.
