- 0:00All sensations carry signals through the nervous system to
- 0:04the brain, which can then interpret the signal.
- 0:08The signal may be more or less intense.
- 0:11It may be interpreted as pain or pleasure.
- 0:15Intensity of the sensation has something to do with the
- 0:18experience and its interpretation.
- 0:21There's a certain intensity which is comfortable for an
- 0:24individual, and beyond that intensity it is frequently
- 0:28interpreted as painful. Thus the signal travelling to
- 0:33the brain in and of itself is not necessarily pleasurable or
- 0:38painful. It is the interpretation that is
- 0:41given to that signal that makes the difference.
- 0:46In this regard, individuals sometimes undertake to build up
- 0:50their ability to withstand more intense signals, and through
- 0:54systematic efforts they find that what used to be painful to
- 0:58them is no longer painful. In some cases, there is a vital
- 1:03or emotional component that helps to convert the otherwise
- 1:07painful experience into one of ecstatic bliss.
- 1:10This sometimes happened with yogic practitioners who go
- 1:14beyond pain and have extraordinary inner experiences
- 1:18once they pass that threshold. For example, we see yogis who
- 1:23sit, lie down, or walk on spiked beds or spiked sandals.
- 1:29If anyone else tries those same things without the focus and the
- 1:33practice, they experience intensely painful sensations.
- 1:39Yet one can observe such individuals who have practiced
- 1:42this as a technique for years, who are clearly joyful and not
- 1:48in pain at all. They have entered into another
- 1:51psychological space that converts the signal they receive
- 1:54through the nerves into a form of ecstasy or in some cases,
- 2:00spiritual joy. While these examples refer to
- 2:04rather extreme steps taken by individuals to push the limits,
- 2:08one can see analogous results where the spiritual seeking is
- 2:12sincere and firm that leave the seeker with calm or deep sense
- 2:17of joy even in the midst of experiencing painful sensations.
- 2:24It is not just painful sensations, however, that can be
- 2:27transformed. Oftentimes it is pleasurable
- 2:31sensations that represent the true obstacle for a seeker who
- 2:36can become so enamoured of the experience that he fails to make
- 2:40further progress but simply tries to repeat the pleasurable
- 2:45sensation and wallow in it. Ryorobindo writes in his
- 2:50thoughts and aphorisms. Quote.
- 2:54There is no iron or ineffugible law that a given contact shall
- 2:59create pain or pleasure. It is the way the soul meets the
- 3:02rush or pressure of Brahman upon the members from outside them
- 3:09that determines either reaction. End Quote.
- 3:14The mother observes. Quote It is obvious that the
- 3:18same event or the same contact causes pleasure in one and pain
- 3:22in another depending on the inner attitude taken by each
- 3:26one. And this observation leads
- 3:29towards a great realization for once. 1 is not only understood
- 3:33but also felt that the Supreme Lord is the originator of all
- 3:37things and one remains constantly in contact with Him.
- 3:42All becomes the action of His grace and has changed into calm
- 3:48and luminous bliss. End Quote Reference Srioro Bindu
